“I congratulate Norm on this award, but more importantly on this story. We appreciate the recognition from our fellow journalists and we hope this story shined a bright light on the scam that had taken place,” said Executive Editor Jason Parsley. “A story like this, tracking every court hearing and every document, can be a tedious exercise and boring, so kudos to Norm for following through with it.” MEMBER

Editorial
FGN Publisher Norm Kent took home a second place award for Investigative Reporting in the Florida Press Association’s annual contest last month. His story, The Rise and Fall of the Florida Agenda, explored the collapse of the LGBT media company. The Florida Agenda launched when the South Florida Blade folded in 2009. The Agenda, and its owner Bobby Blair, eventually attempted to create an LGBT media empire through several prominent acquisitions of other LGBT media outlets across the country including Frontiers in LA, Next Magazine in New York and Fun Maps. Here’s an excerpt from the story:
Bobby Blair had a dream. A vision. He wanted to take a small paper from Wilton Manors, the Florida Agenda, and transform it into a worldwide LGBT phenomenon. He tried. He crashed. He burned. And took a lot of people down with him in the process. After gobbling up numerous iconic LGBT publications across the country, taking his company public, blowing through millions of dollars from investors, today there is nothing left but ashes, and hollow promises that unpaid creditors will one day be compensated. Multimedia Platforms Worldwide (MMPW), the parent company of the Agenda, is today nothing more than a case being postponed again and again. It’s sitting on the docket of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida, deferred again last week for another 30 days, for what the judge said will be “the last time.” SFGN’s investigative report illuminates and tracks the tedious proceedings, up through and including last week’s “last and final” postponement. Having branded themselves as the “leading LGBTQ media publishers in America,” MMPW was publishing market wire press releases promoting and advertising themselves nationwide. While Blair promoted MMPW as a worldwide company the truth was Florida Agenda only published 5,000 copies a week in South Florida while Next published 15,000 in NY, a far cry from the global LGBT media leader he billed the company to be.

My doctor and I are proud of how far I’ve come. Now, I want to ask about staying undetectable with fewer medicines in my HIV pill. I started treating my HIV and reached an undetectable viral load. And whenever I become aware of other treatment options, I talk to my doctor. Here’s what I learned about JULUCA:
JULUCA is the only once-daily complete HIV-1 regimen that combines 2 medicines in just 1 pill.

America’s First Bi Pride Held in West Hollywood
Lesbian Couple Battles Hotel’s Anti-Gay Comments A lesbian couple staying in an English hotel were “in shock” when they received an email from the owner that claimed “people like you should be put in a cage with the rest of the wild animals.” The statement followed arguments between the couple and the owner. Nicole Calder and Lauren Inglis claimed that their room was filthy, and the loud, partying guests next door were approaching them with homophobic comments. Hotel owner Andy Singh, however, said the room was clean and there is no proof that the neighbors said anything. After he sent the offending email, Singh backtracked. “Under no circumstances have I anything against gay people, this is simply an excuse for a refund I am against liars which she clearly is,” he wrote. The women aren’t buying it. “I don’t understand how he can

The city of West Hollywood teamed up with social community AmBi and the Human Rights Chapter to hold the country’s first city-wide Bi Pride event on Sept. 22. Half of the LGBT community identifies as bisexual, a recent study found, and the idea for an event came up in discussion after the city recognized Celebrate Bisexuality Day last year. Despite these statistics, however, AmBi Director Ian lawrence-Tourinho believes that bierasure remains a problem. People are “threatened by bisexuality” because it blurs the lines between straight and gay “that people find very reassuring,” he said to the Los Angeles Blade. AmBi is even booed by the rest of the LGBT community when they march in the LA Pride Parade. So because the bi community isn’t recognized “time and time again,” he said, they’re making spaces for themselves.

The event featured a rally and bi visibility walk, as well as a party with music, poetry performances, and a silent disco.

New York Fashion Week Show Features Only Trans and Non-Binary Models Clothing brand Marco Marco put on a New York Fashion Week show for their new Collection Seven line — but all of the 34 models were either transgender or non-binary, marking the first time this has happened in Fashion Week history. The brand’s designer, Marco Morante, has had transgender and non-binary models in his previous shows, but noticed that “their presence was often overshadowed by cis gay men.” So this year, he wanted something to change. “I wanted to create a space to celebrate trans bodies. This was an opportunity for their presence to be undeniable and reinforce that trans is beautiful,” he told Mic. The show also presented diversity in body type. “I’m too thick for industry standards and not thick enough for plus size. Ban on Lesbian Film Lifted in Kenya
Romania May Change Marriage Definition to Oppose LGBT Couples
The film “Rafiki,” which was previously banned by the Kenyan government for its LGBT themes, has been allowed to premiere in the country for a week. This window allows it to be eligible for Kenya’s foreign-film Oscars submission. The new ruling comes after director of “Rafiki” Waruni Kaihu sued the government over the ban, saying that it limited her right to free speech and expression. The film was originally banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board in April, who said it was trying to “legitimize lesbianism” and “counter to the laws and the culture of the Kenyan people,” a country where homosexuality is illegal. But Wilfrida Okwany, the judge who made the ruling, said she was “not convinced that Kenya is such a weak

Romania is ranked 35 out of 49 European countries when it comes to LGBT rights, according to the IGLA’s European branch. Most public disapproval comes from the widespread Orthodox Church.

Thousands of Chinese Activists Lobby for Same-Sex Marriage
Gay Arabic Magazine Features Trans Man on Cover
A Chinese legal code dealing with sexual harassment, divorce, and family planning was submitted to the public for two months of comment — and thousands of people are pushing for it to legalize same-sex marriage as well. The leader of the movement is Sun Wenlin, whose court application to be married to his partner was denied two years ago. His recent social media post on how to submit LGBT-friendly code amendment proposals went viral, and his campaign signatures jumped from 5,000 to over 20,000 in a day. They have to act now, because “We don’t know how long we would have to wait for the next change to submit opinions on the civil code,” he said, reported Reuters. Wenlin hopes this discussion can

Romania’s citizens will vote on whether or not to tweak the definition of marriage from “spouse” to specifically one man and one woman on Oct. 7. The senate and Constitutional Court approved of the referendum following a petition signed by three million Romanians who supported the change, saying it would help preserve the “traditional family.” Same-sex marriages are illegal in the country, and “could result in making it impossible to protect same-sex unions in the future,” said Amnesty International according to the Independent. “This referendum is essentially asking people to approve discriminating against their neighbours, colleagues, friends and family members. Jordan-based LGBT magazine “My.Kali” has featured a topless trans man on its cover for the first time. My.Kali, which has been published in Arabic since 2016, has been highly criticized by the country, but since it’s online it can’t be censored or banned and the group behind it can’t be prosecuted. “My.Kali” founder and publisher Khalid Abdel-Hadi said the cover and its corresponding story were meant to bring accurate representation in a region whose local media skews the LGBT community. “Sensationalist stories that dehumanize us as a community lie at one end of the spectrum, and the lack of acknowledgement or of objective/neutral stories lie at the other. A second and related issue is the lack of personal stories of lived experience,” he said.

Gay sex is legal in Jordan, but a 2013 Pew Research study found that 97 percent of those polled said “homosexuality should not be tolerated,” Gay Star News reported.

f you think reading is a drag, you ain’t seen nothing yet! A new series in Lake Worth plans to turn that notion on its head and turn up at the same time. ‘Drag Story Time’ is a collaboration with Compass Community Center and the Book Cellar Lake Worth. The premiere event is Sept. 26, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Book Cellar. The story time is for all ages and will feature different drag performers reading some of their favorite
books. It wouldn’t be a drag show without a performance – so you can expect those too. For the first event, Charlotte Shotgun will read an excerpt from E.B. White’s Charlotte Web. She will then perform a couple of songs. “It’s an opportunity for the community to come together and have some fun,” said Chief Bookseller Todd Ketcham. This is the first of more events to come. Admission is free. The Book Cellar is located at 801 Lake Avenue, in Lake Worth.

Niki Lopez Unleashes Her Elephant Deon C. Jefferson
W
hen people normally say “there’s an elephant in the room,” it’s generally associated with a negative connotation. Often it can also lead to others throwing shade. Creative multimedia artist and LGBT activist, Niki Lopez is changing that paradigm and bringing fresh light to the historical phrase. “What’s’ Your Elephant” uses a combination of art exhibits, interactive installations, and workshops to provoke and facilitate meaningful discussions unveiling issues around gender, discrimination, and abuse. WYE works with the public, at risk groups, and communities. They also collaborate with community groups, artists, non-profits, and corporate organizations. WYE Artists Talk and open mic will take place on Sept. 29 at the 1310 Gallery in Fort Lauderdale. WYE’s closing night will feature an artist talk with all of the visual artists within the exhibition. There is a total of 18 gifted artists in the show including Lopez, Adewale Adenle, Natalya Kochak, Teepop, Mary Catello, Wilbert Simpson, Naomi Ross, Tabatha Murda, Artists for Black Lives Matter Collective and Stonewall National Museum & Archives. The artist talk will be followed by an Open Mic hosted by Alana DaCostas from Kr8tive Uprising. WYE premiered its latest exhibition in August. The closing exhibition commemorates five years since it debuted at the 1310 Gallery. One of the highlights of the exhibit is a self portrait, mixed media video installation by Lopez herself. It’s a creative installation that blends performance art and a childhood poem Lopez wrote during her
adolescent years. “Caressed” is one of those thought-provoking pieces that leaves you wanting more. Prepare yourself accordingly. Recently, Lopez has received nationwide media exposure as she shared her “elephant” with People magazine and Discovery Channel’s “Cults” series. As a child, Lopez was raised in an abusive cult that was into secrecy. “I felt vulnerable, nervous but also a sense of responsibility. It’s tough to talk about some of the situations that I grew up [in] as my norm,” mentioned Lopez. “In the back of my mind, I know I will also have to prepare myself for the backlash from current cult members, many who have never met the man personally but they need to support the lies and they view me as a threat.” Thanks to her efforts, as well as others, the cult was brought down. “It makes me realize the impact of ‘What’s Your Elephant’ and how it’s needed in so many communities and I have a responsibility to push it further,” Lopez declared. “I take a deep breath and just put one foot in front of the other.” WYE produces an array of emotions. With an event that encompasses so many elements, don’t be surprised if you leave the exhibit feeling better than when you arrived. “I want people to feel they are not alone. There is strength in community. We can all lean on each other,” Lopez said. “I want artists to feel there is a space to put this type of work and encourage other artists to explore their elephants and know its a relevant art form that has purpose and impact.”
resh out of prison two months ago, an excon was killed in a police shootout after robbing and raping a man, then pulling an assault weapon on police. “It seemed like a war. It was impressive,” an onlooker of the shootout told the Miami Herald. “Police cars came down the street along with two helicopters pursuing him. I’d say it was about 30 or 40 police cars.” The 40-year-old was pursued by police in Little Havana, Miami after committing the violent hate crime on a security guard after meeting him at an adult store. The two men went to the victim’s apartment, where the shooter pulled out a gun, made the victim take off his clothes, and forcibly raping him with the barrel of his gun. According to the reports, the shooter said “All gay men should be dead” and “I should shoot you in the ass,” also using a homophobic slur in Spanish. After, the shooter left the apartment with $500 in cash as well as jewelry worth
thousands of dollars. The police report stated “The offender told him if he called police he was going to kill him.” The shooter was found at a gas station after the victim reported the crime. Seeing that police had found him, he pulled out his AK-47 assault rifle and opened fire. After giving chase from multiple police cars and helicopters, the shooter crashed into a truck. He tried again to open fire on police, but according to reports 19 police officers shot back. As a result, the shooter was killed. There were no civilian injuries. A detective told the victim, “You can go home in peace. It’s all over.” The shooter was released from prison on July 1, according to NewNowNext. He served over a decade for kidnappings, aggravated battery, carjacking with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police, and aggravated assault on a police officer.

SFGN the newspaper received an anonymous tip that a second sex offender, besides Collins, worked side by side with him. SFGN then took the steps to acquire Bryant’s court records detailing his convictions. According to the probable cause affidavit from Bryant’s first arrest in 1982 he was charged with “sexual battery on a person 11 years old or younger.” He pled no contest to having intercourse with the child and forcing the 11-yearold to perform oral sex on him. He was subsequently sentenced to four years of probation and counseling. In 1992, he was charged again, this time accused of having intercourse with his stepdaughter, who was under 12 years old. He was found guilty, declared a felon, and sentenced to 10 years of probation. He did not make it. Near the end of his term of probation
Bryant was arrested again, and his probation was violated. He was found guilty again, and given a new sentence by the Judge. This time, in March of 2003, Bryant AKA Genarzio was sentenced to 20 years in state prison for violating the terms and conditions of his second probationary sentence. After serving 7 years, he was released as a convicted sexual offender in 2010, and listed on Florida’s sex offender registry, under both of his names. As a convicted sex offender, Bryant, was required to report his residence and places of employment on a regular basis to law enforcement authorities. Bryant now lives in Georgia. SFGN has no information to prove whether the Pride Center ever knew of Bryant’s past sex offender history, or if he had any contact with children at the playground.

The black-tie gala provides an opportunity to see and be seen for hundreds of the community’s opinion leaders and decision-makers. The gala will feature Emmy Awardwinning actor and musician Jai Rodriguez as its emcee for the evening. Rodriguez is best known as the “Culture Vulture” on the original version of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” Singer-songwriter Kimberly Locke, from “American Idol,” will perform as the headline entertainer. Tickets for the event are $450 per person. This year’s gala will honor Robin Roberts and Sam Champion with its National Leadership Award. Roberts is the co-anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America.” In December 2013, she publicly acknowledged her longtime partner, Amber Laign. “By coming out as a lesbian while a national news personality, Robin Roberts has been a role model for countless LGBTQ people,” said Rea Carey, executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force. “We are excited to honor her as a lesbian and media leader. courageous and dedicated to the hard work of journalism.” Sam Champion is a five-time Emmy and Peabody Awardwinning anchor best-known for his stint on “Good Morning America,” where he became the first news anchor to come out publicly. He has played a key role in disseminating live coverage from some of America’s most consequential environmental catastrophes, including the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and Super Storm Sandy. In addition to being one of the country’s most trusted anchors, Sam is a passionate advocate for the LGBT community. He has raised awareness of HIV prevention, was a recipient of the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award, and he was one of the first openly gay news personalities in the world. Of course, the event is more than just a reason to honor celebrities, get dressed up and drink champagne; it also serves as the organization’s major fundraising event. In 2017, the event raised more than a $500,000. The gala is produced by the National LGBTQ Task Force, the oldest national organization dedicated to achieving equality for LGBTQ people, and benefits dozens of organizations serving the Miami-Dade LGBTQ community. To date the Task Force has donated nearly $2.7 million to The Miami Foundation. More than 75 different organizations serving the Miami-Dade LGBTQ community have received
grants from the foundation. The foundation has provided $850,000 for organizations offering services for LGBTQ youth; $390,000 to the three organizations – ACLU, Equality Florida and SAVE — that were instrumental in achieving marriage equality in Florida; and nearly $240,000 to agencies providing mental health services to LGBTQ adults, including those specializing in suicide prevention, HIV counseling and support for survivors of domestic violence. Of course, it wouldn’t be a gala if there weren’t a silent auction and a raffle. Two premium tickets to Broadway’s “Torch Song Trilogy,” which includes a backstage to meet the show’s star, Michael Urie, is guaranteed to be among the most coveted items. The raffle offers a chance to win a beachfront Hawaiian escape for two. The package includes first class flights on American Airlines and a 7-night stay at the Grand Wailea Resort. Only 200 tickets for the raffle will be sold. Tickets for the raffle are available at thetaskforcegala. org/hawaiian-escape. If the $450 gala ticket is beyond your budget, you can still attend by volunteering. Volunteers are needed to load goods and materials on the night before the event, as well as on the day of the gala, providing such services as; aiding in auction setup and supervision, ballroom setup, registration, assisting with media relations, hospitality, and auction close-out.

HOLY ANGELS Catholic community
A LITTLE BIT OF FAITH AND
PRIDE ALL ARE WELCOME
T
he most important thing to know about Holy Angels Catholic Community is our motto: “Love Without Judgment.” We attempt to live that in all that we do. We are an open, affirming and welcoming church to all, regardless of anything. Whoever you are, however you see yourself, no matter where you come from or your past history, you are welcome at Holy Angels. Come as you are and celebrate who you are. Holy Angels is a member of the National Catholic Church of North America, one of many independent catholic churches. Our roots are in the catholic tradition, but not tied to the Roman doctrines and theology. We strive to be the vision of Vatican II; a church that is the People of God and not the institution. All of us are members of God’s family, so we welcome all as sisters and brothers. We are not perfect, and do not expect or require those who join us to be perfect. We are not sinners who have fallen from a state of grace, but rather children who are learning about the love of God and how to live that in our lives with one another. We celebrate the traditional seven sacraments of the catholic church, with openness and inclusivity. Our Eucharist (Communion) is an open table. Anyone who joins with us for Mass (Sunday service) is invited and encouraged to receive the Eucharist. Ordination to priestly ministry is open to spiritually qualified candidates without respect to gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or marital status. The Sacrament of Marriage was defined in our church rules as the union of two Christian
people more than 15 years ago. Baptism and Confirmation are celebrated as entry and commitment to a community, not as fire insurance to avoid going to hell. Confession is celebrated as a Sacrament of Healing, not a tool of torture and guilt. And, the Sacrament of Anointing is for the healing of our minds, spirits, emotions, and our physical bodies. These Sacraments are gifts from God so that God may show the Creator’s love for us, and all are invited to share. Holy Angels is committed to our community at large. We have outreach missions to help the youth and seniors, outreach to the homeless, and help support a mission school in Africa. Through our words and actions, we strive to bring the healing effect of love to a hurting and needing world. There is only one way to really find out about a church and to know if it is the right place for your spiritual journey, and that is to visit and experience the community. We invite you to come and check us out. Our Sunday Mass is at 11:00 AM, the church is located at 2917 NE 6th Ave in Wilton Manors. Our website is www.holyangelsfl.org, our Facebook is HolyAngelsFL. We’d love to have you come and visit. Whether you come to Holy Angels or any another church, realize that you are a spiritual being that needs the support of a community of like-minded sisters and brothers. May you find a community that nourishes your spiritual growth and helps you find meaning and true happiness in your life. May God bless you on your spiritual pilgrimage, and may all the Holy Angels watch over you.
SFGN is here for you, no matter who — or what — keeps you going. Check out the Spirituality Section each week to stay in touch with your local religious LGBT community. The only requirement? Be yourself.

There were few TV shows that did more to etch the integrity of the FBI into the consciousness of America than the show by that name starring Efram Zimbalist Jr., which, ironically made its debut 53 years ago this week, and ran for nine seasons. It was an authentic telling of fictionalized accounts of actual F.B.I. cases, and was very popular and highly regarded. Zimbalist himself lived to be 95 years old, passing away in 2014.
You have individually destroyed the credibility of every FBI agent who takes the witness stand. No juror or judge will ever believe a word any FBI agent swears to again. Mr. President, you have done for the criminal defense bar in 24 months what we could not do for ourselves in 50 years. Because of your efforts, we criminal defense attorneys, from shore to shore, are going to win so many more acquittals than ever before. Because of you, Mr. Trump, there is a new day in America. Cops are not to be believed, the justice department is crooked, and federal agents are part of a wholesale conspiracy to obstruct justice, going on witch-hunts daily. It could not have happened without your daily tweets, Mr. President. By all means, publish more. Because of you Mr. Trump, jurors will now realize that all our clients were really victims, set up unfairly by “flippers,” illegally arrested by crooked FBI agents, and then prosecuted by corrupt justice department lawyers. Like your own National Security adviser, personal attorney, or campaign manager or the other dozen or so convicts in your
administration, my clients are all victims of the government’s witch-hunt. However, Mr. President, you have showed jurors how if these investigators can take down you and your team, they can also take down any average citizen at any time. It’s a fake prosecution; a “disgrace.” My clients are not “bad hombres.” Like members of your administration, they are all “good people,” even the one running around the children’s playground in nothing but a raincoat. He was just a misunderstood man with a prostate condition necessarily trying to relieve himself. Unfortunately, the only place available was an elementary school playground. I am not even worried if a client or two gets convicted now and then. Just like you did with that racist sheriff in Arizona, you can pardon them. What is the going rate for a pardon nowadays? Does the FBI take cash, or can we at least get the Stormy Daniels discount by admitting guilt early? Anyway, thanks, Mr. President, for making the criminal defense bar great again.

Trans Talk
Navigating the World as a Trans Couple Atticus Ranck
I
’m getting married on Saturday and in almost every aspect of the wedding planning, my fiancé and I had to think about the fact that we’re both transgender. For anyone who’s ever been married or helped plan a wedding then you know how stressful it can be. There’s a lot to consider – venue, food, guest list, the clothes, and more. During the wedding planning process, there was fear concerning our identity. What if the venue location doesn’t treat us right because we’re transgender? What if the caterers overcharge us because they don’t agree with our “lifestyle?” The first time Sebastian tried on wedding dresses, I went with her. I didn’t want to see her wedding dress, but I worried the employees wouldn’t treat her right and I thought my presence might lessen any negative impact she could face if she went alone. Luckily almost all of our fears were unfounded, but it’s still a valid feeling. One only has to look at the Masterpiece Cakeshop case to see that. I guess wanting our business trumped prejudice in our case. Not only did we fear being mistreated, but we also wanted to make conscience efforts to support LGBT-owned and LGBT-friendly businesses. There were few businesses we knew of that went out of their way to show support to the LGBT community. Most businesses seem to be neutral concerning LGBT issues, not making a stand one way or the other. But especially in the Trump era, silence is to stand on the side of the oppressor. We chose cupcakes over a traditional cake and we chose the cupcake company that has also supported my place of employment – an LGBT nonprofit. Not only did we find it difficult to find and then support LGBT-owned and LGBT-friendly businesses, but there was also the issue of finances. People who are transgender are twice as likely to be living in poverty as the general U.S. population. I know trans people who want to have a wedding but are putting it off because they simply can’t afford it. Most young trans people I know are barely paying their expenses, much less saving for a wedding or homeownership. My fiancé and I are both privileged in so many ways. We both work full-time in careers we enjoy. Despite that we’re still living on a tight budget, and weddings can be expensive. In the end, the wedding is taking place in my

parent’s backyard in Lancaster, PA, another privilege many trans people can’t claim – familial acceptance. When it came time to consider honeymoon locations, there are so many places we had to rule out. We wanted to visit somewhere politically stable, safe and accepting of LGBT people, and relatively inexpensive. We chose to honeymoon in Prague in the Czech Republic. Prague hosts one of the largest Pride festivals in the world, boasting 85,000 visitors in 2017. Despite the acceptance of the LGBT community and the political and economic stability in Prague, we’re still doing our homework. We’ve registered with the U.S. Embassy in Prague, we’ve read safety tips and tricks, and we’ve made copies of our important documents. Worrying about being mistreated and safety while traveling isn’t just an issue of the trans community. A lot of people face these same fears. The difference is that for the cisgender (non-trans) community, being
transgender isn’t a factor making one’s life more difficult. The most amazing thing about getting married is that two trans people found love. Being trans in this world is incredibly difficult – we face higher rates of poverty, HIV, violence, harassment, bullying, being fired or denied a promotion, serious psychological distress and suicide attempts, fear of going to a doctor, and so many more harrowing statistics. For any trans person to accept themselves, have the courage to come out, to be authentic, knowing they could be murdered, literally murdered, for who they are, takes a lot of courage. My fiancé and I have each had our fair share of hardships and I’m sure we will continue to, but the fact that we somehow learned to love ourselves enough to then turn that love outward to each other still amazes me. To all the other trans people out there with the courage to love yourself, take a moment to be proud of yourself. You deserve to be loved, accepted, and respected.

For Florida Governor Race and Politics and the Great Divide

T
his year’s race for Governor of Florida exemplifies the racial and political differences that have divided the United States and the State of Florida in the Age of Trump. The Republican candidate, former U.S. Representative Ron DeSantis, is a staunch conservative and a strong supporter of President Donald Trump. His Democratic opponent, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, is a progressive who earned the endorsement of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Furthermore, Gillum is AfricanAmerican; and his nomination inevitably made race an issue at a time when racial conflict is most acute. Myra Adams, writing for RealPolitics.com, called this an “epic race” that “will be light-years beyond any normal, nasty, expensive gubernatorial election campaign because ‘liberal’ Gillum and ‘conservative’ DeSantis are stand-ins representing all that divides our nation.” “Moderate” voices like the editors of the SunSentinel were dismayed by Gillum’s surprise win in the Democratic primary, especially since Gillum won a plurality but not a majority of the vote. Had there been a runoff, Gillum’s opponents like Rep. Gwen Graham or Jeff Greene might have united to defeat the Mayor. “Andrew Gillum’s [victory] ... comes with an obvious disadvantage. Nearly twothirds of Democratic voters preferred other candidates,” the editors bemoaned. “That’s not to say Gillum couldn’t have won them over in a runoff. But there is no runoff. The Legislature’s Republicans repealed it 13 years ago over mostly Democratic opposition.” If the GOP hoped that the lack of a runoff would lead to moderate Democrats’ flight and a weakened
Democracy, they were probably mistaken. Gillum is still ahead in the polls. No matter how they got there, the differences between the two leading candidates for Governor are greater than they have ever been. DeSantis already called Gillum a “socialist” for advocating “Medicare for all,” raising the minimum wage to $15 and abolishing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The candidates’ views on LGBT rights highlight their differences. DeSantis, who was endorsed by the Family Research Council PAC, earned a “0” rating from the Human Rights Campaign. According to Samuel Johnson, writing for Watermark, DeSantis voted against “the Maloney Amendment, a ratification of President Obama’s executive order making it illegal for federal contractors to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.” DeSantis also supported the First Amendment Defense Act, which “would have hamstrung the federal government from acting against someone who has discriminated against another if the discrimination was based on religious belief or moral conviction.” On the other hand, Andrew Gillum “has always been a staunch supporter of LGBTQ rights.” According to Watermark’s Samuel Johnson, Gillum “vows to protect the LGBTQ community. He will make sure we protect all people, in particular those in the LGBT community, with an emphasis on the T, for transgender.” Gillum “supports same-sex marriage, advising that ‘when many in the panhandle said they would no longer issue marriage licenses to [samesex couples] I stood up as the mayor [of] Florida’s capital city and said, come here and get married, where we recognize that love is love.’”

“Mayor Andrew Gillum’s record of standing up for our community proves he’s the right choice. We’re proud to stand with him in this election and look forward to working with him as Governor,” said Retired Judge Rand Hoch, President and Founder of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council Voters Alliance. “Andrew Gillum has been a consistent champion for LGBTQ equality, and Floridians will see the stark contrast between his record on equality and his opponent who has embraced the antiLGBTQ rhetoric and policies of the TrumpPence administration,” said Stratton
Pollitzer, Chair of the Equality Florida Action PAC. “DeSantis is out of touch with the values of everyday Floridians, 70% of whom support nondiscrimination protections for the LGBTQ community. Mayor Gillum has committed to advancing Florida as a leader for LGBTQ equality in the South, making the state a welcoming place for everyone to live, work, and visit.” As a gay man, and a progressive Democrat, I stand with most of my community to support Andrew Gillum for Governor of the State of Florida. Those who believe that Florida needs progressive change should support this worthy candidate.

LGBT Groups Join Forces to Support
Gillum for Governor In Miami, SAVE, HRC and Equality Florida host a rally for the Mayor Carina Mask
Nadine Smith of Equality Florida.
S
AVE, Miami’s longest serving LGBT rights group, partnered with Human Rights Campaign and Equality Florida to host Andrew Gillum’s rally on Monday, Sept. 24 at the CIC in Miami. All three organizations announced their endorsement of Gillum. Chad Griffin, President of the Human Rights Campaign spoke first, ”We need his leadership in the state of Florida, especially at the center of a national epidemic of violence targeting transgender women, mostly transgender women of color. He noted that Ron DeSantis has spent the majority of his congressional career attacking LGBT rights, whereas Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum has been a steadfast ally and advocate for Florida’s LGBT community. He fought to expand domestic partner benefits for city employees when he was a city commissioner. Griffin added, “DeSantis is leading a campaign that [spreads] hate and fear, but let me be clear today. The days of attacking LGBTQ people to stir up votes is over!” DeSantis has continued to score terribly on the HRC’s congressional scorecard – a way to track Members of Congress’ voting history for pro-equality policies. “The Human Rights Campaign is so proud to endorse today, Andrew Gillum for the next governor of Florida! [Gillum] is the only candidate that will boldly lead this state forward and leave no one behind,” Griffin said. “It is now my honor to introduce the next Governor of this great state of Florida, Andrew Gillum.” Gillum, who is an eloquent speaker, exudes charisma and has a winning smile. “My brother, who I was closest to growing up came out to our family, and had to literally move across the country before he could feel accepted again. He’s in the state of California now, and I will tell you that it was a difficult time for all of us, to see my brother leave us. But I want Tony Lima. you to know something – we’re going to create a state where people don’t have to flee to feel important and accepted. We are going to create a state where you can be in your own skin, love who you want to love, be welcomed, be supported and be protected under the color of the law.” The room exploded into a roar of approval and excitement. “Unfortunately, here in the state of Florida, we still don’t have all the protections that we deserve – for all Floridians. It is still legally allowed in state of Florida to fire someone because of who they love, how they identify, and given the fact that this state is one of the most richly diverse [states] around, that kind of policy has no place in the state of Florida. And when we win this race for governor, we are going to pass the Florida Competitive Workforce Act to make sure that we protect all people here!” Nadine, CEO of Equality Florida was the last to speak. “Ron DeSantis has embraced the anti-LGBT extremist agenda of Donald Trump, and Gillum stands with us to protect marriage equality and secure statewide nondiscrimination protections. In Florida, elections are won or lost by 100,000 votes or less. We intend to deliver that margin for our champion, Andrew Gillum.” The election will take place November 6.

Miami Dolphins award SAVE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TONY LIMA Carina Mask
T
he Miami Dolphins awarded SAVE’s Executive Director, Tony Lima the 2018 Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award on Sunday, September 23rd 2018 during a pregrame presentation on the field at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Jason Jenkins of the Miami Dolphins presented the award to Lima at the 50 yard line with over 60,000 football fans in their seats screaming in excitement. Lima has held his current position as the Executive Director for the last 5 years. SAVE has endorsed and groomed over 50 pro equality leaders in all types of positions in politics. After receiving his award, Lima spoke with reporters waiting on the sidelines. “As the longest serving LGBT Rights organization in the state, for SAVE this is a huge honor. We have been working so hard for the last 25 years to bring full equality to Floridians, to have our biggest [sports] team not only celebrate our community but also be inclusive.” The Miami Dolphin’s Football Unites is partnering with SAVE in order to assist in their prejudice reduction efforts and deep canvassing efforts in historically conservative communities throughout South Florida.
Lima explained that SAVE’s prejudice reduction and deep canvassing model began in June of 2015. The organization set out to find a means to decrease the amount of stigma and intolerance that was facing the LGBTQ community. After months of meticulous and rigorous trials, there was scientific evidence that even one conversation would significantly lower prejudice. Canvassers would have in depth conversations with voters for approximately ten to fifteen minutes in regards to discrimination towards the LGBTQ community and transgender prejudice. Currently, this deep canvassing model is being used all across the United States, not only for LGBTQ organizations but also for immigrants’ rights and women’s rights. When Lima was asked what he felt was one of his proudest accomplishments with SAVE, he quickly answered, “I am most proud of two things, the expansion of the Miami Dade County Human rights ordinance to include the transgender community, [which] was one of the most important moments for us as an organization, as was suing the state of Florida along with the ACLU to make marriage equality a reality in this state.”

Do You Pupusa?
Rick takes a look at some local El Salvadorian restaurants
Rick Karlin
C
entral America’s El Salvador is flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the south, Guatemala to the northwest, and Honduras to the north and east. These influences, as well as that of Mexico farther north, result in a colorful and flavorful cuisine. Corn is a staple crop and naturally, is found in many dishes, as are other Central American staples; rice, beans, and tomatoes. You’ll also find plenty of seafood, tropical fruits, and refreshing fruit-based drinks. El Salvador’s national dish is the pupusa; a thick corn tortilla stuffed with meat, cheese or beans. Pupusas are usually served with a cabbage salad known as curtido and a tomato salsa. One taste and you will become addicted. Other popular dishes in El Salvador are tamales which, unlike Mexican tamales, are wrapped in banana leaves, giving them a distinctive flavor. The two most popular fillings for the tamales are sweet corn or savory chicken. El Salvador’s version of the empanada is
called a pastele. The fried pie is usually stuffed with meat or a combination of meat and vegetables. Yucca is a typical starchy side dish and is usually served fried, sometimes topped with chicharones (fried pig skin). Sopa de pata is a popular soup made from tripe, cow’s feet, yuca, corn, plantains, beans, tomatoes, and cabbage cooked with lemon juice and cilantro. Refried beans, served as a secondary side dish, differ from the Mexican version by being pureed into a smooth paste. Broward County is home to about 10,000 El Salvador natives, many of whom live in the communities just north and west of Fort Lauderdale; Pompano, Oakland Park, North Lauderdale and Margate. It should come as no surprise then that many area restaurants feature Salvadorian cuisine. Most of these restaurants are small storefronts in strip malls, they may not be fancy, but you owe it to yourself to check one of them out.

Pupusas at El Guanaco.
Pupusas For Everyone Not only are pupusas delicious, they are easy to make and inexpensive. They are usually the size of a hamburger patty, but if you are preparing them as appetizers make them about the size of a slider.
Shrimp and Cheese Pupusas Place the shredded mozzarella, chili powder, and bell pepper in a food processor and process until the bell peppers are chopped into tiny pieces and fully incorporated into the cheese. Toss in the shrimp, distribute thoroughly. Place the cheese mixture into a bowl and warm the mix in the microwave for no more than 20 seconds. Squeeze the cheese mixture with your hands, until it becomes like a soft putty-like consistency. Set the cheese aside and prepare the masa.

Place the masa flour, minced onions and water in a bowl and stir until fully mixed. The masa should be very sticky but should form an easy ball when rolled. If not, add water or flour, as needed until it is easy to work with. Lightly oil your hands. Take a lump of masa about the size of an egg in your hand and press the masa out until it forms a disc the size of your palm. Place about a tablespoon of the cheese mixture onto the masa. Pull the sides of the masa up around the beans and cheese and roll it into a ball.

Hungry for more?
Ingredients 3 lbs. mozzarella cheese (shredded) ½ green bell pepper (diced) ½ cup chili powder 1 cup chopped raw shrimp 4 cups masa corn flour ½ cup minced green onion 2 cups warm water oil Flatten it into a patty about ½ inch thick. Pat the disc turning it between your hands about 6 times to flatten it more but to keep it in a round shape. (To make appetizer-sized portions, use about half the amount of masa and filling and make the disc slightly smaller than your palm). Place the pupusa on a large, oiled, non-stick surface and cook on medium high until each side is golden brown, around 3 minutes on each side. Serve with a hot sauce (buffalo wing sauce makes a good substitute for the traditional Salvadorian sauce).

ince she was a little girl, Infinite Abyss Productions artistic director Erynn Dalton has been fascinated with horror movies. “I was obsessed,” she said. “From the time I was six years old, I was reading ‘Jaws’ and Stephen King books. It’s all born out of that.” Dalton lamented that the horror movies and stage plays inspired by popular novels were never considered legitimate, especially the “hammer horror” films that were popular from the late 1950s to mid-1970s. Today, many of those films—think “Curse of the Werewolf,” “Horror of Dracula,” “Plague of the Zombies”—are considered campy cult classics. Since co-founding Infinite Abyss Productions nearly a decade ago, she’s sought opportunities to share her love of the genre. In the past, she has explored the 19th-century French “grand guignol” tradition and just last year, mounted “Nine,” a wildly popular immersive experience, at her Wilton Manors theater. According to Dalton, thrilled fans have been calling ever since asking when Infinite Abyss might offer another production. Her latest production, “Theatre of Terror,” is similar, an hour-long presentation in which audiences will interact with the characters in vignettes staged throughout the Wilton Theater Factory and adjacent Foundry spaces. “There are short periods of time where the audience will be sitting, and other times they’ll be moving around the spaces
of the venue with the actors. I like to make audiences participate. Otherwise, even when actors break the fourth wall, it’s sort of safe,” she said. Dalton wrote the story. “It’s very loosely based on ‘Theater of Blood’, an old Vincent Price movie, where an actor comes back from the dead to kill his critics, but we’ve updated it to fit our venue,” she explained. But, don’t mistake this production with any ordinary haunted house where unwitting guests encounter jump scares around every corner, she warned. Her nine-member cast is not only skilled at portraying their roles, but also improvising when audience reaction demands. Breaking tradition, Dalton will be inviting audiences into tech week rehearsals usually reserved for perfecting lighting and sound effects before opening night. “It’s so much fun for the actors who can feed off of those (improvised) situations,” she said. “The audience reaction is integral to our success and we use every opportunity to predict their responses and perfect the show.” Advance sales have been strong because audiences are limited to 25 persons per performance. Timing has also been key, with the production opening just weeks before Halloween season. Ultimately, Dalton promises plenty of thrills and chills—and lots of fun—for the brave theatergoers willing to attend “Theatre of Terror.”
Infinite Abyss Productions presents “Theatre of Terror” on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Oct. 4 – Nov. 3, at the Foundry at Wilton Theater Factory, 2306 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors. Tickets are $25 at Infinite-Abyss.org.

A&E comedy Writer and comedian Bruce Vilanch will bring his new one-man show to the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on Oct. 5. Photo Credit: Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.
Funnyman Bruce Vilanch Gets Serious for a Second J.W. Arnold
B
ruce Vilanch is a very funny guy. He penned the catchy quips for 23 Academy Awards shows—along with dozens of Emmy, Tony, People’s Choice, SAG and American Comedy Awards broadcast— and took home six Emmys for himself in the process. Vilanch is probably best known as the zinger on the “Hollywood Squares” game show, where he also served as head writer. On Oct. 5, he will be bringing his new oneman show to the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. “It’s not standup comedy, I call it sit down comedy. It’s topical, but also stories from my ridiculous career in show biz, writing 23 Oscars shows and working with Bette Midler for 150 years,” the blond-maned writer explained in a telephone interview with SFGN. He would later admit that he really hadn’t worked with Midler for 150 years (It just “seemed like 50”), but remained tightlipped when it came to any of the material he had lined up for the appearance in South Florida. There were no jokes, however, when the conversation turned to current events and specifically, his nemesis President Donald Trump. The LGBT activist was surprisingly circumspect: “It’s funny on the face of it, but tragic in the effect [Trump] has on our country and society. It just can’t be happening, but it is happening and that’s what gives it its dimension. In comedy, you never know who you’re playing to, somebody in an audience always says aww, when you make a joke about Hitler,” Vilanch said. The entire conundrum civil society faces is promulgated by social media, which the writer refers to multiple times as “narcissism central.”
“Social media has given a voice to people who would be in the wilderness, the whole twat—pardon me—tweet culture. Anyone can become headline news and people are articulating stuff they might have never said aloud,” Vilanch elaborated. “It’s sad and certainly not funny.” Vilanch would like to get off the grid, so to speak, but is frank about his hobbies. “When doesn’t porn figure into any of that?” he replied. “It’s too late not to be honest. I’ve always been a reader and I’m totally caught up in the arts, reading something, going somewhere, seeing something. I’m not following the NFL, sorry.” About 150 years ago, he estimates, even before he started working with Midler, Vilanch got his start writing for the Miami Herald. His ties to South Florida are deep: his grandparents had a home on Miami Beach and his mother resided in Boca before her death. Would he consider retiring here, too? “I’ll have to push some Russian oligarch out of his apartment,” he said with a throaty chuckle. And what advice would he offer a young Bruce, given the chance (or other young LGBTQ people)? “I wouldn’t speak to young Bruce he’s not my type,” he said with another laugh. “I’m so old, I was out before you came out. Coming out didn’t happen before Stonewall, and I was a grown person in college when Stonewall happened. I was always sort of out. I was bisexual and realized that what I wanted was a boyfriend. I wouldn’t want a woman who I liked that much to have to deal with me not being exclusively hers. Plus, I was in a field where eccentricity and flamboyance were prized.” And they still are and Bruce Vilanch still is, luckily for us.
Bruce Vilanch will appear at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, 3385 N.E. 188th St. in Aventura on Friday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $36.50 at AventuraCenter.org. 9.26.2018 •

Business SPOtlight SFAAA Sunday Softball Squads
The Sunday softball squads of the South Florida Amateur Athletic Association celebrated post game festivities this past weekend at the Grille on the Drive, and aside from top shelf drinks from a full service bar, the restaurant hosted a cascade of their best hot entrees, including their home made meat loaf in bourbon sauce and some lasagna like grandma made it for you. The Grille’s 24-item Sunday Buffet has become the talk of the town, and from the smiles on everyone’s faces, it looks like the teams had quite a good time. Stated Rocky Bowell, a frequent diner at the Grille, “every meal at the Grille is a home run.” Courtesy photos.
