n the aftermath of an election cycle that was unfriendly to Democrats on the national stage, two survivors vowed to not give up. Around 200 family members, friends, elected officials and community activists attended the swearing-in ceremony of U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and U.S. Congressman Ted Deutch Wednesday morning at the Federal Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale. For Wasserman Schultz, first elected to public office as a 26-year-old, the roof-top ceremony was extra special. She defeated newcomer Tim Canova in a competitive race for the house seat in district 23. The campaign came on the heels of Wasserman Schultz’s resignation as chair of the Democratic National Committee. “As we know from time to time people try to get her down,” Deutch said of his colleague. “That’s because she always steps to the fore, always in the front of the battle for the things we care about. The amazing thing is despite those efforts she always comes back stronger and more determined to stand up for all of us.” Wasserman Schultz, 50, represents parts of Broward and Miami-Dade Counties, while Deutch, 50, represents parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Both representatives were selected to last year’s Top 25 Straight Allies issue by readers of the South Florida Gay News. “My first priority in Congress will be to protect those who need it the most,” Wasserman Schultz said. “Whether it’s healthcare, immigration or our social safety net, we cannot turn our backs on our most vulnerable.” Wasserman Schultz and Deutch attended the inauguration ceremony of Donald J. Trump as the 45th President of the United States – but not out of glee. “For the simple fact that I want him to know we are watching his every move,” Wasserman Schultz said. During her remarks in Fort Lauderdale,

Wasserman Schultz thanked her parents, husband, rabbi and staff for their unyielding support. She then declared protecting Obamacare to be of the utmost priority. “The most immediate threat we face is as many as 20 million Americans could lose their health care coverage with the repeal of the Affordable Care Act,” Wasserman Schultz said. “Ending this program without any comparable replacement could literally result in lives being lost. It is cruel and disgraceful to go back to the dark times when there were annual and a lifetime coverage limits on all Americans. It is embarrassing and appalling that Congress would even consider repealing a law that protects breast cancer survivors like me and up to 129 million Americans who live every day with a pre-existing condition.” Deutch, who sits on the foreign affairs committee, said he would work to strengthen America’s relationships with allies, “especially Israel,” he said. Raising awareness of eating disorders, creating bipartisan support to fight climate change and pushing for the Supreme Court to overturn Citizens United are other issues on the congressman’s radar. Several local LGBT leaders attended the ceremony. Rabbi Noah Kitty of Congregation Etz Chaim, a South Florida LGBT-inclusive synagogue, said she was proudMof Wasserman EMBER Schultz for enduring a steady stream of attacks from the right. “And she’s still standing,” Kitty said. Michael Rajner, a Wilton Manors resident, MEMBER
said he was glad to see two fighters stay on the job. “It’s very comforting to know Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Ted Deutch are returning to Congress this session,” Rajner said. “They have been consistent leaders on LGBT and HIV/AIDS issues, and our community will be well represented by them as we face incredible challenges ahead.” The transition in Washington, Wasserman Schultz said, remains a touchy subject. “On Friday, our country will swear in a new President,” Wasserman Schultz said. “Understandably, that change in power has generated a lot of uncertainty and anxiety in our community. Since the November elections I’ve felt that same apprehension at times but as we look forward we cannot allow doubt to paralyze us because there’s simply too much at stake.” Rabbi Howard Needleman of Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El gave the invocation, asking God to provide the constitutional officers “wisdom, strength and compassion.” The Walker Elementary School choir performed “America The Beautiful,” Emily Kaufman delivered a stirring rendition of the national anthem, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department Honor Guard presented the colors and Reverend Joe Johnson of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church closed the ceremony with the benediction. “We are not victims, but victors,” Rev. Johnson said.

pproximately two hundred protesters gathered outside the rented home of Mike Pence in D.C. for a “queer dance party” to protest the vice president-elect’s anti-LGBT history. Pence’s record includes signing the discriminatory Religious Freedom Restoration act, which he later backpedaled on. He also openly opposed the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. “These are the streets outside Mike Pence’s house in D.C., shut down by activists throwing a Queer Dance Party tonight,” said one Twitter user, with an attached video of the party. “Pure jubilance.” The party was organized by WERK and DisruptJ20. According to USA Today, all of Pence’s neighbors joined in on the party. “We come in all shapes, sizes, colors, beliefs, and we need to respect our diversity,” said Pence’s neighbor Joanna Pratt, who has lived there since 1979. “The LGBT community has had a real struggle to be respected and be

lgbTQ leaders call on senators to Reject sessions’ ag nomination (EDGE) Last week, national, state, and local civil rights leaders and LGBTQ advocates discussed the nomination of Jeff Sessions as U.S. Attorney General and lifted up the voices of local leaders calling on United States senators, including Senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey, to oppose the Sessions’ nomination. The event was a part of a broad, national effort to call out Sessions on his record of hostility towards LGBTQ people, people of color, Muslims, and historically marginalized communities. Senator Sessions has consistently voted against rights and protections for LGBTQ people. In 2009, when he voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Act, Sessions showed his true colors when he said, “Today, I’m not sure women or people with different sexual orientations face that kind of discrimination. I just don’t see it.” Not only that, but he’s voted

for a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, against taking up a bill that would have provided workplace discrimination protection for LGBTQ people, and twice against repealing the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Stacey Long Simmons, Director of Public Policy & Government Affairs of National LGBTQ Task Force, said “The person who leads the Department of Justice should be someone who values the dignity and worth of all human beings and not those he or she chooses. Sen. Sessions’ record reveals him to be a person who’s on the wrong side of history. What’s worse is he’s actively worked to cause harm to LGBTQ people by voting against Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal, being against marriage equality, opposing including LGBTQ people in the federal hate crime law and not supporting transgender-inclusive public accommodations protections that include restrooms, etc.”

(SFGN) White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters on Monday that he is unsure if President Trump will maintain President Obama’s executive order against LGBT discrimination in the workplace. The previous order bans antiLGBT discrimination among federal contractors. Chris Johnson, White House correspondent for the Washington Blade tweeted on Monday: .@PressSec tells me he’s unsure whether Trump will maintain Obama’s EO against anti-LGBT bias in workplace. “I just don’t know the answer.” The press conference Monday followed the news Friday that the new administration had scrubbed the White House website of several issues including LGBT rights, climate change, and the rights of the disabled, from 27 topics down to six, reported Mic. com.
(AP) The Texas Supreme Court agreed Friday to hear a Houston case that top conservatives hope will provide an opening to challenge the landmark 2015 ruling legalizing gay marriage nationwide. Reversing its previous ruling, the state’s highest civil court set arguments for March in a lawsuit seeking to halt same-sex spousal benefits that America’s fourth-largest city offers its municipal employees. The nine Republican justices had ruled in September not to hear the case in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling from the previous summer that gay marriage was constitutional nationwide. But Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and state Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a subsequent brief saying that the case could serve as a platform to help Texas restrict the scope of the high court decision. “Major constitutional rulings by the United States Supreme Court routinely give rise to waves of litigation exploring the contours and limits of the court’s pronouncement,” the three Republicans wrote in an October brief. “This case is one of many cases that will require state courts to examine the scope of the right to same-sex marriage announced by the Supreme Court.” The reversal Friday followed a slew of separate briefs signed by dozens of other state elected officials, conservative activists and religious leaders who asked the state Supreme Court to defend religious liberty and take a stand on social issues. They argued that Texas should challenge not only the U.S. Supreme Court’s legalization of gay marriage but also its striking down this past July of many of the state’s tough abortion restrictions.
(AP) A Georgia appeals court on Friday overturned a lower court judge’s orders denying legal name changes to two transgender men. Columbia County Superior Court Judge J. David Roper abused his discretion when he denied the name change petitions, the Georgia Court of Appeals decision said. The appeals court sent the two cases back to Roper and directed him to enter an order changing the names. Roper did not immediately respond to an email and voicemail seeking comment Friday. LGBT rights group Lambda Legal last year filed appeals on behalf of Rowan Elizabeth Feldhaus, whose birth name was Rebeccah Elizabeth Feldhaus, and Andrew Norman Baumert, whose given name was Delphine Renee Baumert. Roper had denied the name changes, saying they could confuse and mislead people who interact with the young men and could be considered a type of fraud. In both cases Roper said he would allow a transgender person to choose a gender-neutral name. But he said allowing a transgender man to choose a male name would “confuse or mislead the general public.” The appeals court said it has affirmed the denial of a name change petition only when there is evidence that the petitioner has an “improper motive,” including “intentionally assuming another person’s name for the purpose of embarrassing that person or avoiding the petitioner’s own criminal past.” Lambda Legal attorney Beth Littrell called the unanimous decision an “unequivocal win” and a great precedent. “This decision solidifies an important right for the transgender community and obliterates the notion that living in conformity with their gender identity is somehow fraudulent or otherwise a concern for the government,” Littrell wrote in an email.

Thousands in West Palm Rally Against Trump For Women’s Rights Chris Persaud
S
tar Fae sounded ecstatic when she took the Meyer Amphitheater stage Saturday. “I’ve been told we had over seven thousand people here today, the biggest rally ever seen in West Palm Beach,” she said into the microphone to a cheering crowd that filled the amphitheater’s lawn. At least seven thousand people upset about incoming President Donald Trump gathered on Saturday afternoon for the Palm Beach County Women’s March at the amphitheater in downtown West Palm. The rally was organized by South Florida Activism, a political group Fae founded. Fae, an activist from Lake Worth, told her audience the event’s headcount came from a city parks department official. From noon until after 2 p.m., thousands of protesters – mostly women – waved signs that read “A woman’s place is in the House and Senate” and “Keep your hands and your laws away from my --” with an arrow pointing to a cat. The second one references video leaked in October where Trump bragged about sexual assault, claiming women let famous men “grab them by the pussy.” The crowd listened to local activists, politicians and citizens who took the stage to speak to the anti-Trump, pro-women’s rights, liberal crowd. Their messages covered subjects like global warming, abortion rights, bigotry and the rights of the disabled. One speaker urged the crowd to get politically involved if they want change. “Go to your local city commission, ask them what they’re doing, what they stand for,” said Lake Worth City Commissioner Chris McVoy. He urged those at the rally to not only protest, but vote in local elections and run for local office.
Sam Zimmerman was one attendee looking to get involved. The 19-year-old high school student waved a rainbow flag emblazoned with the word “Equality.” Zimmerman said he has been waving that flag up and down Jensen Boulevard in Martin County, where he lives. “I got people cursing me, flicking me off, saying ‘Fuck you, fag!’ but some people honk” in support, he said. Martin County voters chose Trump over Hillary Clinton by a margin of 61-35 percent, state election data shows. Zimmerman said he voted for Clinton. After 2 p.m., pumped-up rally-goers dispersed through downtown West Palm. One group marched to Trump Plaza at 525 South Flagler Drive, which bears Trump’s name, but is not owned by him. Another marched through Clematis Street chanting “Tell us what democracy looks like! This is what democracy looks like!” The Palm Beach County Women’s march was planned in solidarity with the Women’s March On Washington and more than 400 others across America. An estimated 10,000 marched on Bayfront Park Amphitheater in Miami, the Miami Herald reported. The Washington D.C. women’s march attracted more than 500,000 protesters, the Los Angeles Times reported. The size of Trump’s inauguration was revealed to be much smaller than that when BuzzFeed News’s David Mack compared aerial photos of both events. After the West Palm rally backstage, Fae mentioned plans for another similar event. “I hope for the next rally in February to focus on either gun control or veterans’ health,” she said. 1.25.2017 •

t has been 36 years since HIV was identified on June 5, 1981. Millions of people have been impacted by this disease, with gay and bisexual men, particularly young African American gay and bisexual men being the most affected. Today, more people are living longer with HIV than ever before. Some survivors have lived half their lives with HIV/AIDS. While that alone is reason to celebrate, long-term survival with the disease has also created some unexpected challenges. On Jan. 27, long-term survivors are gathering in South Florida to share their experiences and strategies. It is part of The Reunion Project, a weekend of learning, networking and socializing focused on long-term survivors who are thriving with HIV and AIDS. The Reunion Project was founded in 2015 by long-term HIV survivors Matt Sharp and Jeff Berry, who recognized that there was an entire group of individuals who had survived the epidemic, but in many ways have been left behind by the community that they helped to build. The Reunion Project provides a space for HIV survivors to come together and honor the fact that even though they have weathered great adversity and tremendous loss, many have come through the experience with a certain degree of resilience. Sharp and Berry felt these stories deserve to be told, and shared, to help those who may need help in finding their way back out of isolation, or depression, or post-traumatic stress that came as a result of surviving the epidemic. “The degree to which you participate is up to you,” Berry said. “Some people like to
come just for the educational components of the program, and may not feel as comfortable sharing experiences of friends who they’ve lost, or who are no longer here, because it’s just too painful. And that’s okay. It’s up to each individual who attends what they take away from the day.” Friday evening will open the summit with a cabaret called “The Show Must Go On” directed and produced by Ed Sparan, featuring music and scenes focused on thriving. “We are really excited that the local host committee has put together an entire weekend of events,” Berry said. Saturday will be The Reunion Project South Florida Conference. This is a full-day conference with invited national and local workshop presenters, opportunities for sharing stories and strategies from long-term survivors. One of the presenters is Dr. David Fawcett, who is well known in South Florida for his work in promoting gay men’s health and wellness. His talk will focus on skills to strengthen resilience in long-term survivors. There will also be time for identifying next steps and action planning for continued engagement beyond the conference experience. Sunday will be a Brunch Tour of the World AIDS Museum and a Community Forum for next steps for addressing the needs for LongTerm Survivors in our community. With support from Bristol-Myers Squibb and TPAN, an AIDS service organization in Chicago which publishes Positively Aware magazine, The Reunion Project has been to Chicago, Palm Springs, CA, Philadelphia, and now South Florida.
Approximately 100 people have registered thus far for the South Florida conference. To register or find out more information, visit www.eventbrite.com/e/the-reunion-projectsouth-florida-conference-thrive-summit-weekend-registration-30354072849.

Trump Takes Oath Becomes 45th U.S. President
John McDonald
P
romising to put Americans first and hold politicians accountable, Donald J. Trump was sworn in Friday morning as the 45th President of the United States of America. “The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer,” Trump declared on a cold and overcast day in Washington, D.C. In his speech, Trump blasted the establishment continuing a narrative that he is the ultimate outsider to politics as usual. “For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost,” Trump said. “Washington flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered but the jobs left and the factories closed. The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country.” The New York businessman defeated 17 other Republicans to win the party’s nomination, gathering momentum with entertaining rallies around the country and a strategy of pulling no punches. He defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the general election with 305 electoral college votes to become the second President of the century to claim the oval office without winning the popular vote. “What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people,” Trump said. “January 20, 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again.” Vincent Foster, President of the Miami Log Cabin Republicans, said Trump’s inauguration speech was inspiring. “From putting America first with our foreign policy, to buying and hiring American, these principles should be the new President’s focus,” Foster said. “It’s a refreshing change from former President Obama’s policies of
dismantling American interests abroad and creating economic strife and societal division domestically.” Obama attended the inauguration, as is tradition, but did not speak. Clinton too attended with her husband, Bill Clinton, the nation’s 42nd President, and was greeted with boos from the crowd along with a small chant of “lock her up.” Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer was also booed from the ticketed section of the crowd during his speech. “Whatever our race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity. Whether we are immigrant or native-born. Whether we live with disabilities or do not. In wealth or in poverty, we are all exceptional in our commonly held, yet fierce devotion to our country,” Schumer said. Before Trump took the oath, the American Civil Liberties Union released a seven-point plan on how it intended to challenge the incoming administration. Advancing LGBT rights is one of the ACLU’s seven points. Anthony D. Romero, executive director, said the ACLU stands “ready to confront any unconstitutional elements of the administration’s agenda – today on day one and for the next four years.” Foster, however, said he did not foresee any rollback in LGBT rights under the new administration. “Under a Trump Presidency, the LGBT community will not only continue to exercise the freedoms that we have won, but we will make great strides with the biggest issue of workplace non-discrimination,” Foster said. “I applaud President Trump and his transition team for already reaching out to Log Cabin Republicans and asking how he can create the most positive change for LGBT Americans.”
Republicans Quickly Shoo Off Virginia Bathroom Bill Brittany Ferrendi
I
t seems many lawmakers learned their lesson from North Carolina. A “Physical Privacy Act,” which originally regulated bathroom and locker use by forcing people to use the facility according to the gender on their original birth certificate, was swiftly shot down Thursday. The GOP-controlled House subcommittee killed Republican Virginia Lawmaker Robert Marshall’s bill with an unrecorded voice vote, according to The Washington Post. “You campaign one way and come down here and kill things silently,” he said, calling their actions “disgusting.” He later offered an amendment to remove “original” from the wording, allowing people with updated birth certificates to use corresponding restrooms. “If someone goes through the process of changing their sex — I don’t think it’s very smart because such people have very high
rates of self-harm. That’s documented, not from me,” he said. “But if they go through that, fine. Let them use that bathroom.” This proposed act mirror’s North Carolina’s bathroom bill, which alongside other antiLGBT laws has caused the NBA and NCAA to pull games and championships out of the state. In addition, Wilton Manors enacted a travel ban to North Carolina in response to the state’s controversial laws. TWP reported Marshall’s purpose was to “protect women and girls from predatory men who might pretend to be transgender to gain access to areas where women are undressed.” Predatory laws are already in place to protect against harassment. After hearing testimony for and against the bill, the subcommittee’s seven members — five Republicans and two Democrats — moved to lay the bill on the table, effectively killing it unless the subcommittee reverses itself within a week.

The pair describe their organizations mission in a letter on its website: “Your personal histories of injustice and discrimination at home, school, work, and church have inspired us to use our public status to speak out about the struggles of the LGBTQ community. We learned a great deal from you all, including much more about the needs of LGBTQ people in North America,” they wrote. “We learned that the lack of federal funding for LGBTQ services, limited training for doctors about the needs of their LGBTQ patients and severe workplace discrimination are disproportionately affecting women. Most importantly, we learned that LGBTQ women and girls are feeling overwhelmingly rejected and left behind. Through the Tegan and Sara Foundation, we can be proactive with our support rather than

Fashion model Hanne Gaby Odiele became one of the most well-known celebrities to announce she is intersex. She made the declaration on Monday to USA Today. “It is very important to me in my life right now to break the taboo,” she said. “At this point, in this day and age, it should be perfectly all right to talk about this.” People who are intersex typically have chromosomes or genitalia that does not align with common definitions of the “male” or “female” sexes. The United Nations estimates between 0.05 and 1.7 percent of the world population “is born with intersex traits — the upper number is similar to the number of red haired people.” Odielle was born with Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (present XY chromosomes common in men) and undescended testes that she had surgery to remove at age 10 to prevent the possibility of a cancer forming. “I knew at one point after the surgery I could not have kids, I was not having my period. something was wrong with me,” she said. She also underwent vaginal reconstruction surgery at 18. That’s part of why Odiele chose to come out — she wanted to highlight the surgeries intersex children commonly undergo without their consent. “I am proud to be intersex,” she said. “But very angry that these surgeries are still happening.” InterACT Advocate for Intersex Youth believes that Odiele coming out will “help in raising awareness — and raising outrage,” a Executive Director Kimberly Zieselman stated. Odiele has an important message for struggling intersex youth: “You can be whoever you want. It doesn’t matter.”

S
herry Matteson has been competing in the annual gay chili cook-off for the last three years. Despite not winning anything, that never stopped her from entering. Unfortunately, this year other obligations will keep her away from the event. But it won’t stop others from going to the 5th annual Gay Chili Cook-Off at Penny’s at the Duke in Lantana. On Sunday, Jan. 29, Penny’s is hosting the cook-off starting at 1 p.m. All proceeds go to Compass Community Center’s LGBT Youth Program. “It’s a great fundraiser for Compass and always draws a lot of people,” Matteson said. “Everyone gets to eat chili and plus it’s competition!” Penny’s owner, Penny Johnson, has been hosting the competition every year and hopes this year they can raise $10,000. Last year they brought in $4,000. “My partner works at Compass. I have a bar and wanted to have a chili cook-off,” she said. “It turned into this big thing that’s an annual fundraiser for them.”
And this isn’t the only fundraiser for Compass that the bar hosts. Johnson says they do at least two a year. The bar also regularly helps to raise money for other causes as well such as autism, breast cancer, and pets. The chilli cook-off will be judged in two different ways: how much each contestant raises in tips and four anonymous judges. The combination of how much money they raised and the judges’ notes determine a winner. Last year there were 11 entries and Johnson says they expect about 8-14 this year. Aside from Matteson’s entry, other groups have routinely put in their tasty chili. According to the Facebook invite, H.G. Roosters took the crown last year, winning for best chili, and Johnson expects them to compete again, as they have every year since the competition started. Mad Hatter Lounge and Fort Dix Bar are also big competitors. Slots are open to submit your chili. Find out how to enter and attend by going to Facebook.com/pennysattheduke and clicking on the event page. There’s a $5 minimum donation.

BIG DATA WILL MAKE BIG IMPACT ON LGBT HOUSEHOLDS Marty Gould & Chuck Dinsmore Data Clique Market Intelligence
B
ig data is a big buzzword today, but the United States has been in the business of big data since the signing of the Constitution. Every decade since 1790, the U.S. government has taken on the task of counting every “free” American person. But the Census is so much more than just a counting of heads. It’s been described-by no less an authority than the U.S. Supreme Court--as the “linchpin of the federal statistical system … collecting data on the characteristics of individuals, households, and housing units throughout the country.” While the Census is conducted every decade, the Census department regularly updates its data to improve or clarify its statistical reporting. Many things in our country change over a 10-year period: immigration, housing, employment, drive-time commuting and 30 other statistical categories are reviewed and revised as new information is collected and analyzed. The most significant changes over the last ten years relate to how the Census counts and identifies LGBT households. Prior to this decade, all demographic information on the LGBT community came from surveys conducted by other organizations. The results varied quite a bit. A survey assessing Americans’ health and behaviors found 1.6 percent of adults self-identified as gay or lesbian, while a 2012 Gallup poll found 3.4 percent of adults identifying themselves as LGBT. A British study on Methodology of surveying LGBT households had a big impact on reporting results, with respondents reporting they were least likely to conceal their sexual orientation when they completed an online survey, as opposed to answering questions from a pollster. The Census department has been adding LGBT household information to its database since 1990, it began counting same-sex couples as “partnerships.”
Brokered by
In 2010, the first well-sourced hard data identified nearly 640,000 unmarried same-sex couples, split fairly evenly (slightly more female-female couples), 7 percent of them living in Florida. Of course, as the number of states approving same-sex marriage increased, the Census continued adjusting its data, recognizing married same-sex couples as “families.” Now that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states, the Census is in the process of crafting questions to further clarify—and more accurately depict—LGBT households. A 2015 study on “Improving Measurement of Same-sex Couples” indicated “serious problems with couples who misreport” their status by checking more than one box on the form. These “mismarking” issues resulted in counting errors, which the Census is now in the process of fixing, revising questions that cause reporting mistakes. So, for example, in the 2020 Census, the question “How are you related to this person?” will include the choices “Same-sex husband/wife/spouse” and “Same-sex unmarried partner.” These changes were designed to get more accurate data on the number, type and makeup of LGBT households. Why is all of this so important? A number of reasons. First, the 2020 Census will be the first time in our nation’s history that the U.S. Census will fully count, identify and analyze data related to same-sex marriage, a huge milestone. This data will allow marketers and research companies to better target messages specifically to same-sex married couples. It will also create the opportunity to show how same-sex and opposite-sex families are similar (i.e. raising children, household spending, housing status, etc.). All consumer research originates from the data collected by the Census. The opportunities to “normalize” same-sex marriage will increase rapidly as soon as the 2020 data is published and analyzed.

‘Advocate’ Exposes Anti-Gay Cabinet of President Trump Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
Today is the 7th anniversary of the debut of SFGN. We were going to do a celebratory cover. But it dawned upon me that there is nothing to celebrate this January.
W
hile the new President of the United States has tried to pass himself off as an ally of the LGBT community, there is absolutely nothing- absolutely nothing- about his cabinet picks to give any queer a reason to cheer. Don’t like that word queer? Neither do I. Hate it. But here’s the reality. That is what many of the people running our government now think of you. Here is a summary of some of those cabinet picks and their positions, with full credit to the Advocate.com for publishing a detailed point by point article on the subject last month. The link follows this feature. Let’s start with the Attorney General of the United States. Last year, as the United States Senator from Alabama, he cast two significant votes on LGBT issues. With the first, he voted against allowing same-sex couples to have access to Social Security. He followed that up by voting against spousal benefits for military veterans who lived as same-sex couples. Jeff Sessions, the guy whose job is to enforce hate-crime laws voted against the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act, also voted against repealing ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell.” But Sessions is just the first amongst a host of Trump’s choices that demands our community resist the coming days with strong voices in opposition. The one person who may be the most dangerous is another former lawmaker who has voted against the LGBT community in Congress with enthusiasm. Tom Price, America’s incoming secretary of Health and Human Services, has a voting history of being virulently anti-gay, opposing hate crime laws and co-sponsoring the ‘First Amendment Defense Act. This is a guy who just a year ago referred to progressive transgender policies as “absurd.” Doctor Ben Carson has been celebrated as a brilliant neurosurgeon. Someone ought to operate on his brain. This is the guy who once associated being gay with bestiality, who has called transgender persons abnormal, and argued that the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality should be ignored. As HUD Secretary, he could rescind a 2012 rule prohibiting anti-LGBT discrimination in federally funded housing for low-income people, as one example. He will likely use the power of his office to frustrate claims of discrimination based on gender, sex, or lack of inclusiveness. The new secretary of the Department of

Education is also no friend of the gay community. Betsy DeVos is a wealthy woman who has spent a lifetime partnering with Focus on the Family, renowned for promoting conversion therapy programs. She and her family have given a half million dollars to the National Organization for Marriage. Not comforting. DeVos could remove the protections for LGBT children in schools, including guidelines that have taken a strong stand against anti-gay and anti-trans policies in school districts. You see, she has said public education “is a way of helping advance God’s kingdom.” Scary. President Trump has also bragged about bringing aboard ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis as Secretary of Defense. This is a guy who has steadfastly opposed women serving in the military, claiming you are ‘psychologically unfit,’ never retreating from that position. Of course, he opposed LGBT inclusion in the military as well. He also absolutely opposes any transgender inclusion in the armed forces. The new CIA director also has an unfortunate legislative history. Because Mike Pompeo was a congressman, we know he voted against allowing same-sex couples getting married. Pompeo even supported the Jeb Bush policy of arguing against gays adopting children. He refused to support the Violence Against Women Act when it was expanded to include domestic violence protections for same-sex couples. This is a guy who, speaking to Tea Party activists, said that America should assess the ‘medical health impact’ of the ‘homosexual agenda’ before supporting LGBT bills. The Obama administration pioneered LGBT health advocacy programs. We now have an administrator ready to rape them. Trump’s new national security adviser, Michael Flynn, is OK with gay couples, but he cites his neutrality by pointing to his friendship with Breitbart’s tech editor, the very extreme Milo Yiannopoulos, who is setting back gay rights issues daily. The Trump cabinet, not even getting to Mike Pence is just not pretty. Michelangelo Signorile is one of the LGBT community’s most well-known and nationally respected writers. Last month, in the Boston Globe, he declared that Trump’s cabinet is a ‘Who’s Who of Homophobia. So, the Advocate is not standing alone. Signorile foresaw the unfolding picks being right wing when Ken Blackwell, a former Ohio secretary of state was named to head Trump’s
TRUMP’S CABINET PICKS HAVE: • Voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act • Voted against repealing the ban allowing lesbian, gay and bisexual people to serve openly in the military • Voted against federally funded needle exchange programs • Voted against the Employment NonDiscrimination Act • Voted for a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman. • Voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act •nOpposed the Affordable Care Act, which extends vital protections to LGBTQ people in healthcare settings • Opposed a woman’s right to choose and voted to defund Planned Parenthood • Called the U.S. Departments of Justice domestic policy transition team. This is a guy who once publicly compared homosexuality to arson and kleptomania. Oh, boy. These are guys running our new federal government. If they say these things in the open, what will they be saying behind closed doors? The best bet for LGBT rights in the Trump administration may come from some of his personal advisers, like Roger Stone and Steve Bannon, who years ago, like Peter Thiel, SFGN’s man of the year in 2016, were early supporters of GOProud, a far right wing LGBT group. The LGBT community’s problem is none of these adviser guys are putting laws, regulations and policies into place. His Cabinet picks will and are, and along with the Vice President, they have shown a penchant for being hostile to the LGBT community. We can’t forget the Vice President. Mike Pence — who supported conversion therapy in his 2000 run for Congress — has already claimed that reversing protections for trans students will be the incoming administration’s agenda. This is the guy who signed a bill providing for a ‘religious freedom law’ that could potentially expand discrimination against the LGBT community, and never once supported same-sex marriage, not even after the Supreme Court so
and Education issued guidance for school districts to ensure transgender students are treated with dignity in public and federallyfunded schools “absurd.” • Voted against repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” • Opposed the Voting Rights Act • Voted against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act • Opposed immigration reform • Voted for a Constitutional ban on marriage equality Spoke in opposition of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell • Cosponsored the so-called First Amendment Defense Act, legislation that could allow Kim Davis-style discrimination against LGBTQ people across the nation Source:HRC.org ruled it was a right to be protected, not a choice to be debated. THE BOTTOM LINE The Trump cabinet picks have no sympathy or support for the LGBT community. So, the charge for progressives is clear. It’s time to stand up, be heard, and resist those policies which would set us back. It’s time for us to unify in opposition to those who want to turn back the clock. Yes, today is SFGN’s seventh anniversary. But a newspaper is read for a reason; to have a conscience and speak for a cause. It is not to promote the latest 2 for 1 special at your favorite bar. It is our duty to let the new administration know we are not going anywhere. We are going to fight for our rights, protecting and preserving what we have won these past 8 years. Our revolution is not over. It began with millions marching the day after Donald Trump delivered his pathetic inaugural address, one of the worst ever. He can celebrate his win. We will expose his warts and wounds and lies. They pour out anew every day. You? Me? We are here to stay, and to say that we will not tolerate the diminution of our stature, the demeaning of our person, or the denigration of our soul.

C
ongratulations! Up until now, it has been surprisingly easy to get to this point and I’m sure your ego is extremely happy. You are entitled to enjoy your fifteen minutes of elation. On the other hand, I am not that happy. But that’s a different story. It’s not your fault. You have taken advantage of the opportunity and, even though I cannot vouch for the IQ of those who voted for you, I respect the democratic process and wish you good luck. Now comes the hard part. I am a law abiding, taxpaying, American citizen who happens to be both gay and an atheist. Of course, I did not vote for you but I trust there will be room for me under your tent anyway. You are the president of ALL Americans regardless of race, religious beliefs, gender, age, sexual orientation, or political affiliation. Right? I consider myself a fair and balanced person. Before I start criticizing you I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and more than the one week your predecessor was allotted, to fix the broken country he inherited, which is now all yours, which by the way is in much better shape than eight years ago, no matter what the pundits or the “ experts” say on Foxymoron News Network. So I’m going to sit back, relax and let you work your magic. I just have a few humble suggestions, of course, you can take them or leave them, but do not bitch later on if things do not work out too well and your popularity, relatively high and partisan now, plunges into the toilette. Do not take everything that is said about you as a personal offense. Stop sounding like a high school girl in your tweets. In fact, ditch
Twitter, it makes you seem so childish and immature. I’m not going into specific details, I’ll just list some of the topics, if you did not have yet the chance to consider them, that will be sitting on your desk tomorrow and every day for the next four years at least. Bipartisanship, education, reconciliation, war, economy, pollution, global warming, deficit, corruption, separation of church and state, terrorism abortion, gun control, poverty, healthcare, inequality, injustice, police brutality, racism, sexism, Supreme Court nominations. It is a frightening tall order to fulfill. You have been chosen to lead the Un-united States of America, a fractured and divided country, The only thing I ask of you, in your future speeches ( if you can handle one with more than 140 words) is: try not to use the same old refrains like “the American people here, the American people there.” I have learned that politicians, on each side of the isle, do not give a damn about us little minions, we are expandable and you really think we are stupid. Your breed only cares about lining its own pockets. You all are constitutionally incapable of being honest. So it is up to you to defy the odds. You better hope that Congress will give you the chance to work your agenda, something that was always blindly denied (often without reasons) to President Obama. But he was able to earn the respect and admiration of the world nonetheless. He was a class act. It is up to you not to become a crass act. Sometimes I wish I was a Republican, then I wouldn’t worry about having feelings for my fellow men.

joke – dishonest - unfair and biased among other things. But in his manic schizophrenic way the only thing worse than negative coverage in The New York Times is not being covered at all. The preservation of this invaluable freedom of expression tool has been successfully demonstrated in the European union where Governments have extended media support to all daily publications — regardless of the newspapers’ political affiliations. While we take for granted all of our publications, gay rights activists in Uganda risked detention, violence and death threats for launching an LGBT magazine called Bombastic. Their aim was to “share the realities of being gay in Uganda.” At SFGN we are trying to prove that it’s still doable. We have featured international, national and local news, entertainment and theater reviews, editorial columns, breaking stories, exposed crooks and injustice, made you part of all this by allowing your comments to be read by all as if it was an open forum. Yes, today we are giving ourselves a little pat on the back, seems self-serving but I like it! We believe in what John Stuart Mill said: “if we silence an opinion, we may silence the truth.” Otherwise the landscape of America will soon resemble the 2007 movie “Idiocracy”: a sarcastic comedy film where an average guy wakes up 500 years later and finds that everything has been dumbed down to the point that he is the smartest guy on the planet. Without doubt an uninformed and ignorant society is easy prey for dictatorship.
“Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.” — Thomas Jefferson, 1787. Happy 7th Anniversary SFGN!

and she sports spiked pink hair. The former bodybuilder, known as Aleksandra “Zarya” Zaryanova, was considered by many fans to be butch. “I hope it’s not Zarya,” said a Reddit user. “It would be like suggesting that women who aren’t dainty porcelain dolls must be homosexual.” Ironically enough, Zarya is from Russia — the very country that blocked the comic over homophobia. Other fans had hoped that bounty hunter McCree would come out as gay. The revolver-wielding character’s voice actor, Matthew Mercer, even spoke out toward a Twitter user asking what the big deal was about a gay Overwatch character. “Representation that isn’t overt, or the basis of the character, in media is rare,” he tweeted back. “It’s just welcome.” The good news is that there’s more than one LGBT character — though only one is currently confirmed. “There are definitely LGBT heroes — that’s multiple heroes — it’s a decision that we make when we’re developing these characters early on,” said Overwatch Lead Writer Michael Chu in a Blizzcon 2016 Q&A panel. “We do feel strongly that we want these stories about character’s relationships – not just romantic, but familial relationships and stuff like that – come out in the course of stories that we feel really do them justice.” But this may actually be bad news for some fans, who want sexuality to stay out of their games. “I hope they don’t reveal the sexualities of any character,” said a Reddit user in a discussion on which Overwatch characters may be gay. “It’s completely irrelevant to anything in the game or story. Unless there is a reason to show that, it really shouldn’t be said. If you need a gay character to enjoy this game, fuck off.” Blizzard doesn’t agree, though; aspects of the characters help flesh them out realistically. “As in real life, we feel having variety in our characters and their identities and backgrounds helps create a richer and deeper overall fictional universe,” said the spokesperson. Love it or hate it, character diversity is here to stay — even if it’s a sexuality fans may not like.

“F
ree Kate” is finally a reality. Kaitlyn Hunt made national news in 2013 when the then 18-year-old’s life was turned upside after she was arrested for having a sexual relationship with her then 14-year-old freshman girlfriend. Both were students at Sebastian River High School and played on the basketball team together. The story took several twists and turns until Hunt finally agreed to a plea deal that included two counts of misdemeanor battery and one count of felony interference with child custody, which required her to serve three years’ probation and complete 150 hours of community service. However, she did not have to register as a sex offender. Now it’s over. “SHES FREE! 3 years baby! People doubted her, bashed her, tried to hold her down but she rose above it and proved them WRONG!” Hunt’s mother wrote on Facebook in October. “I’m so proud of you Kaitlyn Hunt! The nightmare is finally completely OVER! New life begins

today! Love you and I’m so proud of you and excited!” The campaign and Facebook group has evolved over the years from ‘Free Kate’ to ‘Kate’s Fight’ to now ‘Kate’s Journey,’ with regular updates about the young woman. Hunt has since married her girlfriend, Latasha Thomas, and had a son, Kingston. Prosecutors initially charged Hunt with two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior on a 12-16-year-old. Hunt’s case received international attention with a slew of local LGBT community leaders weighing in on the matter. A campaign called “Free Kate” was launched with a Change.org petition collecting over 325,000 signatures. Hunt’s family accused the younger girl’s family and prosecution of coming after them because it was a lesbian relationship. The girl’s family, however, said they were simply concerned parents, while the prosecution said they’ve prosecuted similar heterosexual cases in the past.

ast year, SFGN’s story on five openly gay and allied Christian musicians was one of its most popular so this year we’re adding six more to the list. These six musicians have pushed past pressures to stay closeted and are proud to be who they are.
BYRON RICE/KEITH Byron Keith was a contemporary Christian artist for over a decade before dropping off the music scene in 2005. Seven years later, he came back with a new name — Byron Rice. But that wasn’t the only change he made. He changed his music to follow the Americana folk fusion genre. On top of that, was outed as a gay HIV-positive man following a public divorce with his wife. “Between being told I wasn’t a man of God anymore, and that I wasn’t welcome at a lot of churches because I’d gotten divorced — they didn’t even know I was also dealing with the fact that I was gay, and we were trying to deal with that issue as well — it was definitely a hard time,” Rice told HIV Plus Magazine. “I just basically didn’t have anything relevant to say anymore, because I’d been beaten down by so many people.” He was outed as HIV-plus and allowed it to become public because he “didn’t want to have something I felt I regretted and didn’t stand up for my daughters.” “When I found out [I was poz] I kind of went into a depression,” he said. “Finally coming out and realizing I had a lot more to say and a lot more to do, I was just trying to find a voice that I could still feel like I was making a difference.” Despite moving away from the Christian music scene, Rice remains strong in his faith. “Sometimes I forget that God is there, and I need to remind myself that he said he’s there every moment of the day, and he’s going to be there every moment of the day. He’s there through all of the pains I go through with HIV, and he’s there for all of the rejoicing I get to have when it’s undetectable.” Most of all, Rice wants people to understand that being HIV positive is not a sin. “I think a lot of churches still view it that way. It’s because of something you do but that it doesn’t define who you are. It isn’t defining who I am, and that is why I’m openly talking about it

versus trying to be private about it, because for me, I need to let people know that I’m living with it, yes, but it is still something that isn’t going to control me or determine who I am.” Rice still performs music and recently released a single “Sink In” on Jan. 19. nature, working and playing with animals and one another,” Deciccio said. The couple is currently touring and will reach Fort Lauderdale on Mar. 19 at the United Church of Christ Ft Lauderdale. More touring information is available here.
JASON WARNER AND DEMARCO DECICCIO
MICAH’S RULE
This Christian musical duo has been a couple for nearly 14 years. Jason Warner and deMarco Deciccio are contemporary Christian, pop, and rock music artists who share their love of music together while running a non-profit. “We were pretty much made aware that there was no room for any openly gay artists in the CCM world,” Warner told The Washington Blade. “People just didn’t really know what to do with us. … I think that industry is changing though.” The two were no strangers to issues surfacing in the Christian contemporary music (CCM) world because of their sexuality. “We had some people who told us if they worked with us, they’d lose everything and I know there are people in the CCM world that are gay and just can’t be open about it,” said Warner. “For us, we just didn’t have a choice, there was no hiding who we were. If we’d been solo artists maybe we wouldn’t have been so out, but there was such a story around us being a pop duo and a couple that we just said early on, ‘Look, we are who we are.’” They have two sons through surrogacy, “each a biological child with the same biological mother” according to their website. Warner and Deciccio also work in the nonprofit sector. They launched Safe, Affirming, Family Environment (SAFE) in 2011, which opened with a drop-in center and foster care for homeless youth. They also purchased a six-acre ranch together, calling it “Gratitude Ranch.” The ranch serves as “a place where foster youth and foster families can come to experience community,
Although they have gone their separate ways, the inclusive inspirational gospel group Micah’s Rule stood apart from the rest by having a trio of a lesbian woman, a gay man and a transgender woman. Despite this fact, Mary Anne Hewett, Gregg McCaw and Chasity Scott never tried to keep the focus on their sexuality and genders. “It’s just our back story, plain and simple, but we’re not using that as a marketing tool for our music, positively or negatively,” McCaw told The Huffington Post. “We want to be a musical group like any other, but we realize our back story will get out.” Their group name was a reference to Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah’s Rule first brought their voices together at a funeral for Hewett’s brother. From there, they wrote and began rehearsing songs together. “When we got together, we got to talking about our own philosophy on religion to see if we melded that way as well,” Scott told THP. “The way Mary Anne and I write, it’s more of a storytelling with our faith being the force that drives us forward.” According to their Facebook page, the group split in 2015 to “emerge as individual artists.” “We go in peace and we go in love,” they wrote. “Please keep us in your prayers as you will always be in ours. Thank you for being a friend!”

uch has been written lately about the “death of the LGBT press” as more queer newspapers bite the dust and more queer people get our news and information from the Internet. In fact, LGBT papers are very resilient. Not counting the Advocate, which only survives as a magazine adjunct to Out, there are many LGBT papers which have survived years, even decades: Bay Area Reporter, Philadelphia Gay News, Seattle Gay News and Washington Blade, just to name a few. Even last year’s big casualty, Los Angeles’s Frontiers news magazine, was a victim of business malpractice, not changing tastes. To the previously-named successes we should add South Florida Gay News (SFGN), now celebrating its seventh anniversary serving this area’s LGBT community. Though it will be a while before SFGN matches the endurance of Miami’s the weekly news (twn), which survived for 29 years (1977-2006), it is surely heading in the right direction. For its success we should give credit where credit is due: to publisher Norm Kent and to the staff members, writers, advertisers and the community that it serves. I did not have the opportunity to write for Norm’s first
journal, Express Gay News, because I was writing for twn during the years of the Express’s success. But I was without a local outlet in late 2009 when Norm announced his new paper, to be named South Florida Gay News. I immediately jumped at Norm’s offer to write for SFGN, with the title of Senior Features Correspondent, an honor that I share with my friend Tony Adams. Though my life has had its ups and downs during the past seven years, my work for SFGN has been an almostconstant high. Under the leadership of Norm and brilliant editors like Joey Amato and Jason Parsley, SFGN is a welcoming forum for freelancers, even for those who, like me, have written for other publications throughout the years. Though I regularly contribute to special issues of SFGN, like the annual “Out 50” or “Best of” issues, most readers know me for my “Jesse’s Journal” columns, a series that began in twn back in the year 1980. My editors have kindly allowed me to write about anything I want, with the condition that it be something that appeals to our mostly-LGBT readers. During my seven years with SFGN I have written about accordions

(my partner was an accordionist), Juan Ahonen-Jover, AIDS Books, AIDS Day, the Ali Forney Center, the LGBT “alphabet soup,” animals, Argentina and astrology - and that is just the A’s! I seldom write about personal topics, though I had to write about my parents when I covered the recent death of the former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Four years ago, when my partner Michael Greenspan developed dementia - an increasingly common condition as members of our community get older - I wrote about it as a form of catharsis. Today Michael lives in a nursing home, unaware of the world around him, but I think I will show him a copy of this issue, just to remind him and me of days gone by. Where do we go from here? Doomsayers promise disaster with the rise of Donald Trump and his cadre of homophobic billionaires, but I do not despair. We survived Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush and I am certain we will survive the Age of Trump. Meanwhile, the “tabloid president” and his entourage are sure to give us writers something to squawk about, even as we reach for our blood pressure medicine. And SFGN will be there to cover it all. I can hardly wait.

or many years the corner of US1 and Oakland Park Blvd. was known for hate groups taking it over and protesting. But last year after the Orlando massacre, local lawyer, Tom Runyan reclaimed the corner and turned it into a beacon of hope with his Monday night “Love Always Wins” rallies. The first week 250 showed up. “The message of the rally is love always wins,” Runyan said at the time. “This corner has always been a corner of hatred. Today we took it back.” The story quickly become one of SFGN’s
most viewed and shared stories of the year. “We wanted to take that corner back and spread a message of love and cooperation,” Runyan said at the time. Co-founder of rally Derek Maingot added at the time, “we wanted to bring some happiness and color to that corner, with flags and smiles, and honking horns.” And that’s exactly what they did for six months. After the election they shut the weekly rallies down. But they may come back with Runyan saying “we are waiting to see how the new government shapes up.”

s a follow-up to a column we published in 2014 “Famous Actors Who Never Came Out, And A Few Who Finally Did,” SFGN takes a look back on Queers who made their mark in the film and theater industries of generations past. Many of these actors were forced to live in the closet or face banishment from their professions--but some did manage to venture out. ERNEST THESIGER (1879-1961)
A celebrated star of the stage in his day, Ernest Thesiger also made many film appearances, two of which gave him a cult following which he retains today. In 1932 Thesiger costarred in gay director James Whale’s “The Old Dark House” opposite horror movie icon Boris Karloff and Gloria Stuart— Ernest Thesiger Stuart would gain late in life fame as Old Rose in “Titanic” (1997) some 65 years later. In the darkly comic chiller Thesiger played Horace Femm, a screaming, effeminate queen who reportedly was not unlike the actor himself. Thesiger reunited with Karloff and Whale for 1935’s “Bride of Frankenstein.” Thesiger’s portrayed the ghoulishly queenie Dr. Praetorius, who professes a fondness for underground crypts and who gazes “lovingly” at his pupil, Dr. Frankenstein. This role is considered one of the screen’s first openly gay characters--of course in 1935 the “g” word could not be uttered.

DOROTHY ARZNER (1897-1979)
In real life Thesiger was married to stage actress Janette Ranken, though this is widely believed to have been a marriage of “convenience”--Thesiger was actually in a long term relationship with Ranken’s brother, the artist William Ranken. Many of Thesiger’s friends were well-known actors, writers and artists of the period, including Whale, Cole Porter, Vita Sackville-West, and others who are now known to have been gay or bisexual. Thesiger’s 1941 book “Adventures in Embroidery” remains available on Amazon--for $113. “Practically True,” his 1926 autobiography, is currently unavailable online. Thesiger was played by Arthur Dignam in “Gods and Monsters” (1998), a biographical film about James Whale.
Arzner was reportedly one of Nazimova’s many female lovers. Possibly the only working female director in the male-dominated Hollywood of the 1930s, Arzner directed many of the era’s top female stars, including Clara Bow, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford and a pre-I Love Lucy Lucille Ball. She was definitely the first woman to direct a talking picture, and was the first female member of the Director’s Guild of America. Arzner’s films were known for their strong, free-spirited female characters. She lived with choreographer Marion Morgan for forty years.
ALLA NAZIMOVA (1879-1945)
JONATHAN FRID (1924-2012)
Often known to the public by the single name Nazimova, she was a celebrated stage actress, and was a powerful Hollywood figure during the early 1920s. A producer on a number of the films in which she starred, Nazimova’s Sunset Blvd mansion, known as the Garden of Allah, became notorious for her wild parties, which were rumored to include orgies. Openly bisexual, Nazimova flaunted her many affairs with men and women alike. In 1923 Nazimova produced and starred in a film based on gay 19th-century writer Oscar Wilde’s “Salome.” The film’s screenplay was written by Natacha Rambova, who was married to silent film heartthrob Rudolph Valentino--both of whom are believed to have had affairs with Nazimova. Hollywood lore states that “Salome” was cast entirely with gay or bisexual actors, though this has never been verified. “Salome” was a box office failure and ruined Nazimova’s Hollywood career. She returned to the theater, though did make a few film appearances during the 1940s. In 1977 Nazimova was portrayed by actress Leslie Caron in director Ken Russell’s “Valentino”.
Frid was a classically trained stage actor who studied under theater legend Lord Laurence Olivier and toured with Hollywood star Katharine Hepburn. In 1967, at age 43, he was preparing to retire from acting to become a teacher when his agent called with an offer to appear for 13 weeks on “Dark Shadows,” a then struggling daytime drama. Frid’s multilayered portrayal of Barnabas Collins, Jonathan a guilt-ridden 175Frid year-old vampire, caused “Dark Shadows” to jump from the bottom to the top of the ratings almost overnight. The three-month gig stretched into four years and Frid, a middle-aged man,
found himself an unlikely teen idol. Throughout his life, old school gentleman Frid remained “discreet” about his private life, but he was hardly in the closet. He frequently enjoyed cocktails at Julius’, a gay bar in the West Village, then the center of New York City’s LGBT community. He was also photographed with “Dark Shadows” co-star Louis Edmonds on Fire Island, a popular gay resort--though good friends, the two men were not a couple. They remained close, with Frid attending Edmonds’ funeral in 2001. Though Frid’s homosexuality has been common knowledge for decades, a small circle of “Dark Shadows” fans continue to insist that the actor was straight. LOUIS EDMONDS (1923-2001) Though popular for his five-year run on “Dark Shadows,” Edmonds achieved star status for his 16-year portrayal of comical con artist Langley Wallingford on the classic daytime drama “All My Children.” He received several Emmy nominations for his work on “AMC.” Edmonds’ fans included TV legend Carol Burnett, who asked to be written into the show specifically so she could work with Edmonds. For one week in 1983, Burnett appeared as Verla Grubbs--the actress played the role occasionally for the rest of “AMC’s” run and was eventually revealed to be Langley’s long-lost daughter. Throughout his career, which included dozens of stage appearances, Edmonds remained semi-closeted to the public but was always openly gay to his friends and colleagues. He was the subject of “Big Lou,” a 2004 biography from the late gay writer Craig Hamrick. In the book Edmonds spoke openly of his life as a gay man in the theater and of his two long term relationships. “Big Lou” remains available at Amazon for $13.61 KERWIN MATHEWS (1926-2007) Handsome and virile, Mathews achieved popularity during the 1960s after starring in a series of fantasy/adventure films, including “The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad” (1958) and “The Three Worlds of Gulliver” (1960). His twenty-plus year acting career included a wide variety of roles in film and on television. In 1978 Mathews retired from acting and moved to San Francisco, where he owned and operated a men’s clothing and antique shop. Though he remained “discreet” during his acting career, Mathews and Tom Nicoll, his partner of 46 years, lived as an openly gay couple in San Francisco. Mathews’ 2007 obituary in the San Francisco Chronicle acknowledged the couple’s relationship.
PAUL WINFIELD (1941-2004) In 1972 Winfield was only a small handful of African American actors to have garnered an Academy Award nomination up to that time. Winfield was acknowledged for his work in the acclaimed drama “Sounder,” in which he played a sharecropper who was unjustly sent to prison during the Great Depression. Winfield developed a fan following for his appearances in popular science fiction films such as “Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan” (1982), “The Terminator” (1984) and Tim Burton’s “Mars Attacks” (1996). In 1978 Winfield was nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance as Dr. Martin Luther King in “King,” a three hour TV movie--Coretta Scott King was played by Cicely Tyson, his co-star from “Sounder,” He won the Emmy Award for an appearance he made on the popular TV series “Picket Fences” in 1995. In 1998 Winfield appeared as “Auntie Mahalia”, a gay role, in “Relax, It’s Just Sex!” a gay romantic comedy. Prior to this film, Winfield was “discreet” about his private life. He and Charles Gillian, his partner of thirty years, are interred together at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood.
Lenny Baker LENNY BAKER (1945-1982) Baker, a regular performer on and offBroadway, attracted a great deal of attention for his only starring role in a film: “Next Stop Greenwich Village” (1976), director Paul Mazursky’s autobiographical tale of his years as a struggling actor in early 1950s New York City. The well-received film garnered Baker a Golden Globe nomination and put him on a clear path to stardom. The following year Baker won a Tony Award for his work in the Broadway musical “I Love My Wife.” Appearances on popular TV shows such as “Starsky and Hutch,” “Taxi” and “The Rockford Files” soon followed. In 1979 Baker seemed to suddenly disappear. Three years later his death from cancer at age 37 was reported in the New York Times, though many of his friends and colleagues have since come forward to say that Baker was gay and was an early casualty of AIDS. 1.25.2017 •

That’s so freaky to me.” The second season will also be no stranger to sub-plots, including a love triangle that carries over from the previous season. Kala is in an arranged marriage with the wealthy Rajan, but despite her apparent happiness from him, she’s also fully aware that she may be in love with Wolfgang. In an interview with International Business Times, Desai spoke lightly on the continuation of the love triangle but refused to spill details. “Even what I do know, I won’t share because the fun is in not knowing. I can just say things have gotten even more intense and action-packed, and the relationship between Kala and Wolfie is more stressful and electric than ever!” As revealed in June of last year, Co-Creator, Executive Producer and Director Lily Wachowski will not be joining her sister for the second season. She chose to stay out so she could pursue her gender transition, but may return for a season three. “We all wanted to give her space for her to get this new phase of her life in gear, so she’s been clear of season two from the beginning.” said Co-Creator, Writer and Executive Producer J. Michael Straczynski in an interview with Awards Daily. Lana Wachowski may be taking the reigns solo, but cast members think she can handle it. “Lana is absolutely a superwoman,” Clayton told Buzzfeed. “The way she channels her energy and her creativity … it keeps me in absolute awe whenever I’m in her presence. She’s an absolute force.” The second season was renewed in August of last year. Filming completed on Sept. 20.

n November SFGN wrote about Scott Melton, who was fired from Saint Andrew’s private school in Boca Raton. In the story, Melton, who is an openly gay, black, Jewish man, didn’t know if he was pushed out because of his sexuality, or because he was a whistleblower – or a combination of both. Melton complained to the head of his department that certain administrators were attempting to cover up a possible sex abuse scandal, alleging that outside authorities were not being notified, as required by Florida law. In addition, he declared in front of faculty and staff “I have to tell you this is the most racist and homophobic place I’ve ever worked.” That same week he was put on a leave of absence. Months later he wrote to the school: “Since being put on administrative leave with pay, I have been contacted only once. Saint Andrew’s School has been negligent and derelict in duty to communicate my status for not only this year but also for the 2016-2017 school year. Therefore, due to the hostile work environment and lack of information I have experienced … I am forced to give
my resignation … and seek employment elsewhere.” Melton later filed a lawsuit against the school asking for back pay, lost fringe benefits, compensatory damages and reinstatement. The lawsuit alleges that the school violated state law by retaliating against Melton for being a whistleblower. In an earlier letter to the school from his lawyer, he separately alleged discrimination based on his race and sexual orientation. Currently, the lawsuit continues and since SFGN’s story was published, one of the administrators involved in the controversy resigned from her position. Melton claimed she had once told him there was “too much gay content” in his class. A half-dozen teachers and several students came to Melton’s defense in the story. One student said “His class was amazing. It was my favorite. He always listened. If we had a problem, we could always come to him. We could always trust him. For the school to treat him with so much disrespect it’s really frustrating. He was trying to teach us. To challenge us.”

raig Jungwirth, owner of Beach Bear Weekend, spent 2016 in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Arrested and charged with posting social media messages of an impending attack on the Wilton Manors’ LGBT community, Jungwirth would eventually beat the rap when prosecutors could not prove a connection. “I am disappointed they could not find enough evidence to proceed,” said Wilton Manors Vice Mayor Justin Flippen. Jungwirth, 50, was arrested Sept. 4 by the FBI in Orlando. He was extradited to Broward County where he faced charges of sending threatening messages via Facebook. One of the more alarming posts attributed to Jungwirth read: “My events are selling out cause you faggots are total patsies. None of you deserve to live. If you losers thought the Pulse nightclub shooting was bad, wait till you see what I’m planning for Labor Day.” In another post, Jungwirth allegedly wrote, “I’m gonna be killing you fags faster than cops kill niggers. It’s time to clean up Wilton Manors from all you AIDS infested losers.” Ultimately, federal investigators were not able to link the threats to any of the 59 Facebook profiles Jungwirth had access to. Prosecutors are barred from proceeding with a case where they do not believe they can prove the allegations in court. Jungwirth was facing 10 to 16 years in federal prison if convicted. “So he actually has to harm someone or do something more drastic to be prosecuted?,” Wilton Manors resident Anthony Johnson said. “What’s the point of having a political system in place if they let people back on the streets who threaten to take lives of others?” Johnson, a health care advocate, said he has interacted with Jungwirth. “I had my run in with this guy and, let me tell you, I would not put it past him to follow through with his threats,” Johnson said. Flippen said he had “brief contact” with Jungwirth when Jungwirth was promoting Beach Bear Weekend to the City of Wilton Manors. He said he did not feel intimidated by Jungwirth and described him as someone who “did not understand” the city’s role in special events.

One week after federal charges were dropped, Jungwirth, 50, pleaded guilty to two second-degree misdemeanors in Broward County. He was sentenced to a year’s probation, and ordered to undergo a mental health assessment. Jungwirth had been held in Broward County Jail the past month for violating the conditions of his bond on charges of defrauding an innkeeper, having failed to complete a pretrial diversion program, and getting arrested on a new charge while out on bond on a pending case. Represented by his counsel, Ron Baum, Jungwirth plead guilty before the Honorable Judge Ginger Lerner-Wren. She adjudicated him guilty on both cases, ordering him to serve two consecutive terms of six months’ probation, requiring he see a private psychologist or court licensed mental health expert, and fulfill whatever treatment plans they so outline. In each of the two cases, the victim was an establishment owned by Wilton Manors’ entrepreneur Nick Berry. The first case, in 2015, dealt with Jungwirth’s absconding from the Courtyard Cafe without paying his full bill. A second unrelated charge of criminal mischief was filed in 2016 after Jungwirth defaced the windows at Rumors with paint. As a condition of his plea, Jungwirth will have to make nominal restitution to the establishment as well. Additionally, the court ordered Jungwirth to have no contact with any of the businesses in person, via the internet or any means of social media. “You understand,” Judge Lerner-Wren told the defendant, “this is a critical part of this plea?” He answered, “Yes.” Weighing significantly less than the 280 pounds he had months ago, Jungwirth remained stoic and silent throughout the hearing, except to change his plea, admitting he was guilty, competent, and understood the terms and conditions of his sentence. Within days after his release, local bearcommunity representatives have made public assertions that Jungwirth is back on the internet attempting to interfere with this year’s events. SFGN will cover the story as it unfolds.

appy 7th anniversary SFGN! I am so proud to be a part of the SFGN family. I’ve been writing for the LGBT media for 30 plus years and SFGN is the most professionally run publication for which I’ve had the pleasure of working. Wool is the traditional gift for the seventh anniversary, so I thought it appropriate to share some of my favorite lamb recipes (be grateful it’s not the tenth anniversary or this column would be all about cooking in aluminum foil).
ROAST LEG OF LAMB A boneless leg of lamb will be easier to slice, but a bonein leg will be more flavorful and the bone will make the base for a wonderful soup or stew. INGREDIENTS 5 pounds leg of lamb 4 cloves garlic, sliced 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary salt and ground black pepper DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 450°. Cut slits in the top (the fatty portion) of the leg of lamb every 3 to 4 inches, insert slices of garlic down into the slits. Salt and pepper generously all over the top of lamb. Place lamb on roasting pan, with several sprigs of fresh rosemary under and on top of the lamb. Roast in preheated oven for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 325°, roast about an hour to an hour and half or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center reads 135°. Do not overcook the lamb; the flavor is best if meat is still slightly pink. Let rest at least 10 minutes before carving. LAMB RAGU LASAGNA This is a wonderful way to use any leftover leg of lamb, simply mince the meat and replace it for an equal amount of stew meat. INGREDIENTS FOR LAMB RAGU 3 1/2 pounds lamb stew meat, diced 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 (28 oz.) cans diced tomatoes 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste 1 medium yellow sweet onion, finely diced 1 tablespoons dried oregano

4 cloves garlic, minced 2 ½ teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon ground pepper
INGREDIENTS FOR LASAGNA 3 (16 oz.) containers ricotta cheese 1 lb. fresh mozzarella cheese, coarsely grated 1½ cups finely grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup thinly sliced fresh basil 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper 24 lasagna noodles, par boiled DIRECTIONS To make the lamb ragu: In a large Dutch oven, cook the lamb in the olive oil until browned (this step may be eliminated if using left-over leg of lamb). Add tomatoes and their juice, tomato paste, onion, oregano, garlic, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to low and slowly simmer, covered, until the meat is very tender, 4 to 6 hours. If using a crock-pot, combine everything and cook on low 4 to 6 hours. If the sauce seems too runny, continue simmering for 5 to 10 minutes, uncovered, to thicken slightly. To make the filling: combine the ricotta, half the mozzarella and half the Parmesan with basil, parsley, eggs, salt, and pepper. Blend until smooth, cover and refrigerate until ready to assemble the lasagna. To assemble: preheat the oven to 375˚. Spoon a little sauce on the bottom of a 14” x 10” roasting pan. Place six of the noodles on the sauce, overlapping slightly to cover the bottom of the pan. Top with one-fourth of the ricotta mixture. Spoon one-fourth of the sauce on top of the ricotta. Repeat layering process. Top with any remaining ricotta and sauce. Lightly
spray a piece of foil with cooking spray, cover the lasagna, and bake until hot and bubbly and the cheese on top is melted, about 45 minutes. Switch the oven to broiler; sprinkle the top with remaining Parmesan and mozzarella slices. Position the lasagna so that the top is about 4-inches from the broiler. Broil until the cheese is crusty around the edges and blistered in spots, 3 to 5 minutes. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving. CURRIED LAMB CHOPS This is a great recipe for the grill. For a nice side dish, mix cold cooked rice with cherry tomatoes, diced cucumber, cashews, dill and olive oil for a light and refreshing salad. INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoons curry powder salt and freshly ground pepper 8 double lamb chops DIRECTIONS Mix the yogurt, olive oil, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, curry powder, salt and several grinds of pepper in a large bowl. Place the lamb chops in a large baking dish, coat all sides with the marinade, cover, and refrigerate at least 3 hours or overnight. Turn grill to high heat, wipe excess marinade off chops and blot with a paper towel. Place the lamb chops on the hottest parts of the grill. Cook until dark grill marks form, about three minutes. Turn chops, top with remaining marinade. Grill on opposite side or until 130°F internal temperature. Transfer chops to a platter, cover with foil, and let rest at least five minutes before serving. Drizzle chops with olive oil before serving.

n old-fashioned musical and a gritty world premiere play about bullying were the top nominees last week when the 2017 Carbonell Awards finalists were announced. The Carbonells, named after sculptor Manuel Carbonell who designed the first award, recognize excellence in South Florida professional regional theater and are in their 41st year. Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Palm Beach County led the musical category with 18 nominations, including 10 nods for the musical, “Me and My Girl,” while Zoetic Stage in Miami picked up 13 nominations in the play category, with eight for gay playwright Michael McKeever’s “After,” including Best Production and Best New Work. McKeever was one of nine to land double nominations, also recognized in the Best Supporting Actor, Play category for his role in “After.” McKeever’s longtime partner, Stuart Meltzer, landed directing nominations in the musical and play categories for Zoetic Stage’s “Passion” and “After.” Slow Burn Theatre Co.’s Patrick Fitzwater also received double nominations as director of “Spring Awakening” and choreographer for “Heathers the Musical” at the Broward Center. Slow Burn led Broward County companies with 12 nominations, including two Best Musical nominees, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Spring Awakening.” Island City Stage in Wilton Manors, the LGBT-centric company that swept the 2014 awards with Dan Clancy’s “The Timekeepers,” received four nominations: Rita Joe, Best Actress, Play, “The Submission;” Cristina Groom, Best Supporting Actress, Play, “Perfect Arrangement;” Peter A. Lovello, Best
Costume Design, “Perfect Arrangement;” and David Hart, Best Sound Design, “Perfect Arrangement.” Topher Payne’s “Perfect Arrangement” was a critically-acclaimed and commercially successful comedy about two closeted gay couples during the so-called “Lavender Scare” during the anti-Communist McCarthy era of the 1950s. Clancy’s play, “Middletown,” a drama about the evolving relationship between two families over several decades and premiered by West Boca Theatre Co. in Boca Raton, also made the cut in the Best New Work category. In Miami-Dade County, GableStage in Coral Gables matched Zoetic’s 13 nominations, including two Best Production of a Play nominees, “Hand to God” and “The Royale.” Chris Crawford earned a Best Actor, Play nomination for his work in “Buyer and Cellar,” a one-man comedy mounted by Actor’s Playhouse in Coral Gables about an unemployed gay actor’s stint managing the vintage shopping arcade built beneath Barbra Streisand’s Malibu estate. “South Florida boasts a thriving theater scene which continually raises the standard of excellence that the Carbonell Awards seeks to recognize and reward,” said Don Walters, president of the Carbonell Awards board of directors. “Look at the Carbonell nominees for Best Production of a Play. That category alone shows the diversity of theater being produced regularly in South Florida, from classics of American theater to experimental work, as well as a world premiere play.” Walters added all the nominees exemplify “the enormous amount of excellent work being produced here in our tri-county area.”
The awards will be presented on Monday, April 3 at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $25 and sales open on March 28. A complete list of nominees can be found at CarbonellAwards.org.

Strauss, who refused to be separated and would perish together. Despite the structural flaws in the show, Slow Burn, as expected, delivers a flawless production, leaving the audience yearning for the happy ending that just never comes, like the rescue ship, California. The cast of 20 rises to the occasion, covering more than 30 roles. Landon Summers (Barrett), the young stoker offers a reverberating tenor voice in addition to his chiseled looks. Matthew Korinko, a Slow Burn founder, again demonstrates incredible versatility, this time as the tortured architect Andrews who must confront both his shortcomings and those of his ship. Troy J. Stanley and Ann Marie Olson offer the signature musical moment in that duet by the Strauses, “Still,” and eliciting one of the few tears of the performance. Director/choreographer Fitzwater keeps the action fast paced and pulls the most convincing performances possible from his eager cast, despite the inherent challenges in the script. The actors are backed up by a capable six-piece orchestra led by Emmanuel Schvartzman that, in keeping with the period, featuring a sonorous string quartet (Anna Ventura, Pearl Fuentes, Stephanie Jaimes and Adriel Lyles). Costuming the cast is as monumental a feat as building the largest moving object of the era. Rick Pena created hundreds of historically-accurate costumes, from crew uniforms to the finery worn by the elite passengers. But the real star of the show is Sean McClelland’s set. The stage of the Amaturo Theater is convincingly transformed into the deck and compartments of the liner with a massive system of steel ladders and gangways, accentuated by Thomas M. Shorrock’s inventive lighting design and special effects. No, there’s not going to be a surprise happy ending, but this production should not be missed, if just to witness the monumental effort by Slow Burn to illustrate one of the equally monumental events in modern history.
WILT ON
I
n his curtain speech on opening night, Slow Burn Theatre artistic director Patrick Fitzwater threw out a spoiler to the packed house in the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater. Nobody should be surprised when the Titanic sinks at the end of the show. Instead, the big news to some was there would be no Leonardo DiCaprio or Kate Winslett characters, no big blue diamond and no syrupy songs about hearts going on. Unlike James Cameron’s 1997 big screen epic retelling of the ill-fated British liner that sank on its maiden voyage with its compelling love story and intriguing below deck subplots, Peter Stone and Maury Yeston’s Tony Award-winning best musical, which also debuted in 1997, pretty much sticks to the cold, hard facts. And that’s what sank the show (relatively speaking). Despite efforts by Stone to create a cast of noble characters, most were just not sympathetic: Captain Smith, an obsequious 40-year White Star veteran on his final passage before retirement, succumbs to the pressures of Mr. Ismay, the ambitious managing director who compromised his passengers’ safety in pursuit of glory and greed. Ship architect Mr. Andrews seems incredulous to his massive creation’s flaws and shortcomings. The first-class passengers are a “Who’s Who” list of the gilded age, including Macy’s department store owner Isidor Straus, wealthy businessman Benjamin Guggenheim and their wives. Even the third-class passengers are just a rabble of hopeful immigrants seeking better fortunes in America. Barrett, a handsome young stoker, is the closest character to the film’s Jack Dawson character, but alas, he has a fiancé back home in Britain, so there are no steamy interests there, save for the ship’s massive boiler room. Yeston’s score is tuneful and accessible, if not much more memorable than the thousands of passengers who were not allowed to fill more than 400 empty spaces on the lifeboats on the calm, cold April night in 1912. The standout is “Still,” sung by the devoted couple, Isador and Ida
