became a life long breast cancer advocate. According to the Sun Sentinel in 2003 her brother and sister-in-law launched the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund when Boccard’s cancer returned after being in remission for 11 years. The fund helps uninsured or underinsured women throughout Broward County with the services being provided at Broward Health Coral Springs. More than $700,000 has been raised for the fund, which has helped provide more than 2,000 procedures that identified more than 100 women with breast cancer and provided follow-up treatment. Eric Runyan, president of Front Runners, said Boccard attended their Boobie Bash last year.

Hunters Nightclub is the presenting sponsor for the sixth year. Roa said there’s also a new partnership this time around with NBC 6. “They will be producing commercials leading up to the event and will be broadcasting live the night of the event,” he said.

The Pride Center is hosting the event bars under white canopies along Wilton Drive which generate funds directly for the organization. They will be located on Wilton Drive at NE 22nd Street, NE 7th Avenue and NE 9th Avenue. As always, organizers recommend attendees use ride-sharing services, since parking around Wilton Manors will be limited. Parking is available at The Pride Center for $20. “The [Wilton Manors Police Department] will work with taxi and ride-sharing companies to designate drop off/pick up locations to coordinate traffic flow and alleviate traffic congestion,” Roa said. his article reports on three meetings. It reports on the Broward HIV Prevention Planning Council (BHPPC), the HIV Planning Council (HIVPC), and the South Florida AIDS Network (SFAN). The BHPPC coordinates HIV prevention planning in Broward. The HIVPC oversees the Ryan White Care (RWC) Program of Broward (RWC-Broward). SFAN advises the RWC program of the Florida Department of Health in Broward (RWC-FL DOH Broward). The BHPPC meeting focused entirely on planning for Ending the Epidemic Initiative (ETE). The HIVPC and SFAN also discussed the ETE. For narrative clarity, those discussions have been combined. Ending the Epidemic The ETE aims to reduce new HIV infections in the US. Its goal is to reduce them by 75% by 2025 and 90% by 2030. This plan only targets areas with high rates of new HIV infections. Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties are all eligible for this program. Josh Rodriguez, RWC-FL DOH Broward, discussed the ETE plan. It will add to existing HIV programs, not replace them. The ETE initiative has four pillars: Diagnose HIV rapidly, enter treatment quickly, prevent new infections, and respond to new infections. Rodriguez mentioned contact tracing and molecular surveillance as tactics under the response pillar. Contact tracing involves people entering HIV treatment disclosing their sexual contacts. Molecular surveillance involves examining viral DNA to identify those sexual networks in which HIV is spreading. According to Rodriguez, Broward wants to focus on people who know they are living with HIV, but are out-of-treatment. The standard HIV prevention model focusses on individual medical treatment. Rodriguez contrasted this individual model with the “social determinants The HIVPC met on August 22 Jones reported that the Peer Training program had graduated its first class. Another class will begin in January.

of health” model. Six factors make up the social determinants of health: 1) access to nutritious food, 2) community and social context, 3) economic stability, 4) education, 5) neighborhood and physical environment, and 6) the health care system. These six factors present barriers to staying in care. Leonard Jones, RWC-Broward, reported that housing instability drives many people to drop out of care. Most people unable to suppress their HIV, lack homes or stable housing. Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County have to rapidly develop plans to implement ETE in their area. Once written, the counties have to submit their plans to Tallahassee. Florida has to submit its plan to the Federal Government by December 19. According to Jones, counties would then have to compete for funds in tiers. Broward and Miami-Dade will both be competing in the same tier. Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, New York City, and Washington DC are also in that same tier. The ETE awards range from $750,000 to $9,000,000. Rodriguez’s presentation generated much discussion. Lorenzo Robertson questioned how open Tallahassee would be to community input. He felt that Tallahassee fails to value work done in Broward and that the community is not getting what the community needs. Janelle Traveras questioned whether the community would be meaningfully involved.

SFAN met on October 4 SFAN approved a motion to reallocate funds for a new line item. This line item would pay for the SFAN Chair and one other to attend three conferences\. Allowable conferences include two local ones and the USCA conference. SFAN moved $14,500 from Non-Medical Case Management and another $14,500 from Medical Transportation to fund this line item. No one knows the cost of those three conferences. Once costs become known, SFAN will return all remaining funds to those two programs.

Next SFAN Meeting: Thursday, November 7 at 6:00 p.m. at Carter Park, Social Center, 1450 W. Sunrise Blvd. SFAN welcomes newcomers.

Leather Days

at Disney ‘Leather Incursion’ whips up fifth year at Disney World Damon Scott

Crack that whip. On Mickey Mouse, that is. For those who remember rock band Devo’s 1980s hit “Whip It,” or don’t – no worries, Kirk Rubén’s got you. Rubén, (aka Mr. Ramrod 2013 Fort Lauderdale) has a plan to offer you an extended Halloween weekend of sorts with leather and more. The 5th annual “Leather Incursion” takes place Nov. 1 through Nov. 3 at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Last year there were 40 attendees and this year Rubén hopes to have 50. Rubén, who is sought after for his kink and fetish workshops, is the man at the helm to direct attendees over the three-day event. “Join your fellow leather kink and fetish friends from all over the country to come together and make memories at the most magical place on earth,” Rubén said in a recent email blast.

He said the age of those who come usually range from the 20s into the 60s. “We had all kinds of different people that joined us [in 2018] – gay, straight, trans, men, women – even a service dog,” Rubén said. He said people have come from as far as Missouri, California and New York. “Put on your family friendly leather or gear, and show your pride as we head into the parks and celebrate who we are outside of the bars, dungeons and title contests,” his email posted continued. Rubén describes the gathering as a “leather version of Gay Days at Disney.” Gay Days is traditionally held every June (this year it was in August) and is known as one of the biggest Pride-style events for the LGBT community. At Leather Incursion, you’ll have a chance to visit Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

Rubén describes the gathering as a “leather version of Gay Days at Disney.” Participants can come for a single day or all three. While Rubén is the party director here, he’s quick to note that the weekend is pressure free. There will be specific, but optional, meeting times for photos, meals and to visit attractions. Nothing is mandatory. Leather Incursion coincides with Epcot’s popular Food & Wine Festival – many a foodie’s dream. New options this year are visits to the recently opened Toy Story Land and a trek to the highly anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, both at Hollywood Studios. There is also a closing dinner at a Disney Springs restaurant on the last night. Rubén has secured a group hotel rate of $109 to $129 per night at the Courtyard Orlando Lake Buena Vista at Vista Centre.

Since the weekend butts up against Halloween this year (which is on a Thursday), and some are planning to attend Wicked Manors or other events, Rubén said the group hotel rate will be effective starting Oct. 31 through Nov. 5. Extending the group rate is an easier way to accommodate those with separate Halloween plans or those who want to celebrate Halloween at Disney World before Leather Incursion, he said. For more information and to RSVP, go to the “Annual Leather Incursion” Facebook page, or contact Rubén at mrramrod2013@aol.com. A final note: Rubén wants to make clear that Leather Incursion is not an official Disney event and isn’t sponsored or endorsed by the company or any Disney affiliation.

Visit their Facebook group (search for “Annual Leather Incursion) to follow their updates or register at Eventbrite (5th Annual Leather Incursion). Or email Kirk Rubén at MrRamrid2013@aol.com for more information.

‘Bear Weekend’ Brings

Furry Fun Back to Key West Damon Scott

O

ne of the most popular entertainers among the bear set is coming to Key West.

Gay rapper Big Dipper (Dan Stermer) is headlining “Key West Bear Weekend” — now in its third year — Oct. 30 to Nov. 3. There are many reasons why bears should be excited about Big Dipper, event organizer Shane Tate said. For one, he’s a big body positivity advocate and regularly features plus-size bears in his music videos. He writes songs about big boys. Case in point is his song and video “Thiccness” – a sexy ode to bears. Stermer has been self-producing “provocative queer and empowering music and videos” since 2011. Tate recommends another song – “Lookin” – to help understand the Big Dipper vibe. The artist has racked up millions of views on his YouTube channel and his live show is performed across the globe. He’s become known as the “go-to bear of raunchy internet rap,” and is in ever-increasing demand at Pride events throughout the U.S. Bear Weekend will feature other bear-centric entertainment, too, like the Joe Fiore produced Furball dance party – back for the second year. Popular drag queen Vita Summers will host events as well. Tate launched Bear Weekend three years ago to “see if the

T

he race for the Democratic nomination heated up in Ohio last week with a record 12 candidates participating in the party’s fourth debate. Taking the stage this time were U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, former Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, U.S. Senator Kamala Harris of California, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, U.S. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, businessman Andrew Yang, former Housing & Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro, U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, billionaire Tom Steyer and former U.S. Congressman Beto O’Rourke of Texas. WHW caught up with Florida Representative Shevrin Jones for his opinion of the state of the Democratic presidential campaign. Jones, who represents parts of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties in Tallahassee, said he has endorsed Biden. “I have already endorsed Joe Biden which was very early on,” Jones said. “I am very tuned into to what’s happening with all the other candidates. I have really become a huge listener. There are a lot of values that I agree with Vice President Biden, I don’t agree with all of them.” Jones, campaigning for a seat in Florida’s Senate, received the Harvey Milk Award at the Dolphin Democrats gala Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale. An openly gay black educator, Jones said Biden’s centrist position is what the country needs. “There are a lot of values that I agree with Vice President Biden on that I can live with and one of them is him being huge in working with the other side of the aisle. I’m big on that,” Jones said. “It’s almost like we’ve walked into a partisan twilight zone where nobody is talking to anyone. Everybody is talking to themselves and their party, which you can’t get any work done and our country is in a mess because of it. So we need someone who’s going to bridge this gap that’s been created.” In the debate Biden said he would raise the capital gains tax on the wealthiest Americans

Shevrin Jones.

to address the country’s wealth inequality. “The way to get things done is to take a look at the tax code now,” Biden said. “We have to start rewarding work not just wealth.” Biden said stock market coupon clippers pay lower rates than teachers and firefighters under the Trump administration’s tax code. “It’s ridiculous,” Biden said. Meanwhile, back in Miami Gardens, Jones said the concerns he’s heard from his constituents are largely about basic needs. “When I go door-to-door, people are mostly asking about how are you going to make sure that I maintain my health care and when I go to a parent’s door, parents want to know how can I make sure that my child will continue to be educated in a state that cares about education.” At 76, Biden is the second oldest candidate in the field. Sanders is 78. Representative Carlos G. Smith (D-Orlando) is Jones’ colleague in the Florida House. While he has yet to endorse a candidate in the Democratic field, Smith said age is not a major qualifier for him. “The democratic candidate’s age is not at the top of the my list of concerns at this time,” Smith said in a telephone interview.

nosh with folks who believe that we all are gorgeous flowers in God’s diversity of human expression. These are only some of the reasons people have joined Congregation Etz Chaim since our founding in North Miami in 1976. At that time there wasn’t a single mainstream synagogue that even considered welcoming gay and lesbian people, to the point that our first organizational support came from the MCC church community. We had to keep our meetings secret, our printed newsletter delivered in a plain brown wrapper, and avoided using last names so that no one would be accidentally outed. Since that time we have brought wonderful and encouraging changes. Members and friends turned to us for help and support during the most deadly early years of the AIDS crisis, we succeeded in bringing LGBTQIA Jews into mainstream Jewish community life, we have evolved into a broad-based welcoming community whose members are LGBT, queer, Jewish, not Jewish, agnostic, atheist, questioning, singles, couples, families, non-binary, and straight folks, and we have become a destination for those who are relocating to our area. Our doors are open to anyone interested in Jewish community and the support that offers, those who hear a call to service based on moral values, those who thrive on learning and text study, and a structure to express and memorialize the many powerful and significant moments in our human life. Our Friday night Shabbat service begins at 8pm, and you are warmly invited to join us!

eople join our synagogue for a number of reasons; they want to connect with their local Jewish community, they are looking for a significant other who is community-minded, they enjoy religious services as consumers and / or leaders, they are single and feel less alone as a member, they are a couple and want to increase their social connections, they want to learn more about their history and tradition, they enjoy learning new things through reading, lectures, discussions, films, and theatre events, they enjoy being around like-minded folks, they delight in the intellectual challenge of speaking with someone who does not share every single thought or attitude, they have taken on the obligation of maintaining a Jewish community for the next generation, they have accepted the inheritance of a 6000 year old tradition with its wisdom and stories, they rest in the comfort of a reliable annual cycle of holy days and joy-filled celebrations, they welcome the rules that boundary their life including ideas of how to be a good neighbor or treat laborers or protect animals, they love the music of the holidays and Shabbat, they love the experience of spending time in nature that Sukkot promotes, they love lighting Hanukkah candles during the longest nights of the year, they welcome Spring with Passover seders, they gain spiritual joy from the invitation to begin again during Rosh Hashanah, they anticipate the relief that comes with the forgiveness brought by Yom Kippur, they glow in the connectedness of having a reliable weekly experience of fellowship, encouraging words, and a tasty

celebrating our past. For too long, gay people covered up their deaths, because they were quietly ‘discreet’ about their lives. There were other reasons too- maybe embarrassed that they passed due to AIDS. Sadly, once we lived in a world that did not fight AIDS. It fought people with AIDS. Not anymore. We can stop hiding who we were. Our future should not deny our past. As a publisher of gay publications for 20 years, I can’t tell you how many times friends and families of loved ones have come to me and asked me, pleaded with me, not to run a story about that loved one’s death in our gay’ newspaper. It’s embarrassing. “Oh, he was so much more than that,” they will say. “We don’t want him remembered that way.” Oh, please. Yes, he was more than that. He was also a well-known power bottom, dancing at a strip club, doing porn, living on Grindr, with a drug problem and on probation.

“Don’t write that,” we are told. “Talk about his art degree, his poetry, his pilot’s license.” We will. We can chew gum and walk at the same time. But this is a newspaper. We report the truth. We don’t fly away from it. Do me a favor, then. Let SFGN acknowledge your passing as we have your life, with words commemorating your time, recognizing your friends , and maybe that you liked rubbing peanut butter on your belly. Besides, who cares now? Our paper is here to record our history, not hide from it. Sometimes, it is painful. More often, we find that which is intimately most revealing is universally most common. In closing, let me share with you the words of baseball’s Yogi Berra, a charismatic wordsmith and Hall of Famer: “You should always go to your friend’s funeral. Or he won’t come to yours.” When I pass, let my tombstone simply read I had a lover’s quarrel with the world, and forward all emails to norm@ iwouldratherbeattheballpark.com.

SunServe provides fee-for-service training to businesses and agencies to help them improve their cultural proficiency to more successfully interact with LGBTQ+ and Transgender clients. “We have thoroughly enjoyed our time working with Misty and feel that the LGBTQ & Transgender Cultural Competence & Proficiency Training provided is a necessary training, especially for public sector employees. It is important for employers to create a supportive, respectful, and inclusive environment for employees and for the public. “ Paulina Gainey, Employment Manager, City of Plantation

SunServe is the Florida AIDS Walk Largest Beneficiary We LOVE all of our donors and partners, but we hold a special place in our hearts for AHF- the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Each year, AHF sponsors the Florida AIDS Walk, an event that raises over $1.5 million locally to support and care for Floridians living with HIV/AIDS through funding to beneficiary agencies, including SunServe. For every dollar SunServe raises towards Florida AIDS Walk, AHF provides a dollar for dollar match. Last year, SunServe was the top earning beneficiary agency of Florida AIDS Walk. Here are some thoughts about Florida AIDS Walk from our Executive Director, Mark Ketcham: We walk to raise funds to support those living with HIV in Broward County, and for those who we are trying so hard to prevent them from contracting HIV. The AIDS Walk provides close to 20% of SunServe’s funding which is used for Transgender Services, Women’s Services, youth and Senior Services and very important to this community, Mental Health Services. That AHF provides the framework for the walk, AND then matches what we raise dollar for dollar from our donors, is what a commitment to the community looks like. See you at the Walk! Mark Ketcham

CARF Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities CARF—Say it loud you hear music playing, say it softly it’s almost like praying…well, not exactly—though while there were moments of praying that went into getting our CARF accreditation, the real reason was the single minded focus and herculean efforts of our entire staff, led by Director of Quality Assurance, Gary Hensley. CARF stands for the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, and earning accreditation is a huge badge of honor that means that SunServe is deeply committed to the health and safety of our clients and that their needs are always at the center of everything we do. page 5

history month Media

Welcome to LGBT History Month LGBT History Month October marks LGBT History Month, which was started in 1994 by a Missouri high school teacher, Rodney Wilson. He sought out other teachers and community leaders who then chose October because school was in session and it coincided with National Coming Out Day on October 11. SFGN will be participating in a special history project spearheaded by the Philadelphia Gay News throughout October. More than two dozen LGBT media outlets around the country will run the weekly features. Since print space is limited, SFGN will run many of the stories online. Visit SFGN.com/History2019 to read them.

A (Long) History of Physique Magazines Each week in October SFGN will publish a series of stories to showcase our history. For more visit SFGN.com/history2019 Jesse Monteagudo

I

saw my first physique magazine when I was 13 years old (1966), in a newsstand in downtown Miami. Though I did not yet know what I was, I knew that I found other men attractive, and I was instinctively drawn to the magazines’ models, who were completely naked from the back or tastefully covered with a posing strap up front. Of course having a 13-year old looking at naked men was the last thing the old man who ran the newsstand wanted, and he was quick to chase me away whenever he caught me looking at the magazines (this happened quite often). Still, what little I saw confirmed what I already knew: that, at its best, the male body is the most beautiful thing on God‘s green Earth. Coming from a family and a culture that claimed men were ugly, it was an epiphany. By the time I came out of the closet (1973), the physique magazines were a thing of the past, victims of their own success. Fullfrontal nudes were no longer considered obscene, and openly gay magazines already proclaimed what the beefcake mags could not admit; that they published shots of naked men for the pleasure of other men.

Physique Pictoral.

Still, I never lost my interest in physique magazines, both for their own sake and as an important part of gay social and cultural history. This article owes much to Taschen, publishers of “Beefcake: The Muscle Magazines of America 1950-1970,” by F. Valentine Hooven, III and, in three volumes, “The Complete Reprint of Physique Pictorial 1951-1990.” I also consulted “Physique: A Pictorial History of the Athletic Model Guild,” edited by Winston Leyland (Gay Sunshine Press) and “Hard to Imagine: Gay Male Eroticism in Photography” and “Film from Their Beginnings to Stonewall,” by Thomas Waugh (Columbia University Press). The recentlypublished “Buying Gay: How Physique Entrepreneurs Sparked a Movement” by David K. Johnson (Columbia University Press) is another fine resource.

The father of physique magazines was Bob Mizer (1922-1992). In 1945 Mizer started the Athletic Model Guild in Los Angeles as a modeling agency for male body-builders. Mizer, a self-taught photographer, recruited and photographed the models, carefully listing their vital statistics along with their real names and ages. Mizer sold his photos by mail, advertising them in men’s magazines. By 1951 Mizer’s catalog was so extensive that he began to collect his photos and sell them in a magazine format. Thus was Physique Pictorial born. The first publication of its kind, Physique Pictorial showcased a generation of male pinups and bodybuilders, including Jack LaLanne, Joe Dallesandro, Steve “Hercules” Reeves and Mickey Hargitay (who’s bestknown as husband of Jayne Mansfield and father of Mariska Hargitay); as well as art by George Quaintance, Tom of Finland, “Art-Bob”

For much of the fifties, those little physique magazines were not just an aspect of gay culture; they virtually were gay culture.” Being closeted themselves, most gay men in the 1950’s and 1960’s had more in common with the “closeted” beefcake mags tan with the emerging homophile movement. Physique Pictorial consistently outsold “political” publications like ONE and the Mattachine Review.” According to Hooven, by the midfifties Physique Pictorial and Tomorrow’s Man routinely sold over 40,000 copies each. Add the estimated sales of the dozen or so lesser physique magazines to those two top-sellers and, even though most of the mags were published only quarterly or bi-monthly, the total must have approached a million copies a year.” On the other hand, ONE magazine claimed at its height (1955) a circulation of just 3,500. Hooven continues by pointing out that “the overwhelming majority of ONE’s sales were in just three urban markets, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, while the physique magazines were available in even the minor cities and an astonishing number of the small towns of the U.S., as well as most of the larger metropolises of Western Europe.” More gay men read physique mags because they knew about them and had access to them. What effect did physique magazines have on gay liberation? According to the authors of “Completely Queer,” “Mizer was never directly

associated with gay and lesbian activism, but his effect on the development of a gay male consciousness was immeasurable. As early as the 1950s, he began urging readers of his publications to demand their rights, join homophile organizations, and fight police entrapment and censorship.” Certainly Mizer’s war against censorship led to wider dissemination of information about homosexuality, which in turn inspired many of us to come out of our closets and to become active in the homophile and gay liberation movements. By the end of the 1960’s, the legal taboo against full-frontal male nudes was a thing of the past. Openly gay magazines like Drum and Vector emerged that combined gay activism with nude photography that was made no bones about their homoerotic appeal. The rise of hardcore gay pornography, and of glossy studios like Colt and Fox, proved too much of a competition for Physique Pictorial and other physique magazines, which could no longer afford to hire top models. (The three-volume, collected Physique Pictorial shows a sad decline in the quality of its models after 1969.) Even so, Mizer continued to publish Physique Pictorial, as a semi-annual digest of old and new photos, until 1991. Mizer died in 1992, and his Athletic Model Guild soon followed suit. In 2017 the Bob Mizer Foundation (www. bobmizer.org) relaunched Physique Pictorial with quarterly issues that feature both new photography as well as photos taken during that magazine’s golden years.

Since, in our society, male-male contact is only justified under the cover of violence, models were often shown wrestling, which led to a whole new line of male erotica. 10.23.2019 •

t was the 1970’s and the gay life in South Florida was marked by its nightlife, and its nightlife was measured by the Copa. As Tiny Tina, Ray Fetcho was one of its star drag performers. The preeminent bar for all things gay, the Copa was a dance club located on South Federal Highway in Dania Beach, just by the airport. One night a week, the Copa would host a “Wet Jockeys” contest, and the contestants, all dressed in nothing but white Haines underwear, would showcase their wares, as a drag queen poured pitchers of water on their not so private — and suddenly ever so transparent — parts. The contest was funny and upbeat, and would pack the Copa. No host was more popular than Tiny Tina, the “Queen of Comedy.” But what was popular to the gay community was pornographic to the police. Early in 1976, they raided the Copa, taking Tiny Tina into custody and charging her with “offering for a lewd act.” With homosexual acts deemed illegal at the time, she pled no contest to the charge. Over 30 years later, it would come back to haunt her. After retiring from full time performing and becoming a nurse’s aide, Ray Fetcho worked as an employee and caregiver in an assisted living facility. As laws changed, background checks became required to work in nursing facilities. Individuals with certain types of arrests, like Fetcho’s, were banned. In 2010, after one such check, Fetcho’s employers discovered the arrest from a quarter century before. They regretfully, but summarily, fired him. He thought he had no legal recourse. Tiny Tina’s plight became a local news sensation, which went viral nationally in online LGBT publications. After decades of social service, Fetcho was suddenly out of work for a minor act 34 years before. But Tiny Tina fought back. SFGN took up her cause. Fetcho first petitioned the state government for an exemption from the harsh statute. TV crews highlighted his plight. After some setbacks, he won an

administrative appeal. It was upheld. His nursing licenses were reinstated. Already facing health issues before this happened, Fetcho would soon lose a leg to diabetes. Still, the “Queen” would perform in ALF’s for those even facing greater obstacles. Soon afterwards, diabetes would claim not only his leg, but his life. Of course, the emotional consequences of standing up to the state took a physical toll. It had to. Stated John Castelli, the present day Wilton Manors realtor, “She was a legend in the South Florida area, who performed for over 44 years, generating love and laughter.” Castelli would know. He was the owner of the Copa when her act was interrupted by the police so many years ago, in a lifetime far away. Tiny Tina was a great performer, once a Miss Florida. Ray Fetcho was a bigger human being. Ten years ago, faced with injustice and discrimination for being herself, he rose to the occasion and said, “No, I will not stand for this.” The “Queen” became a king, a plaintiff in the cause for gay civil rights. This is the fourth week of national LGBT history month. There are thousands of stories we can tell and re-tell here in the naked city. In South Florida’s LGBT history, this has been one of them.

Boos & Booze News Where to dine for Halloween

Rick Karlin

H

alloween is believed to be the one night of the year when the barriers between the living and the dead break down. It began as the festival of Samhain, part of the ancient Celtic religion in Britain and other parts of Europe. Immigrants from Scotland and Ireland brought the holiday to the United States. The commercialization of Halloween started in the 1900s, when postcards and die-cut paper decorations were produced. Halloween costumes started to appear in stores in the 1930s and the custom of ‘trickor-treat’ appeared in the 1950s. Now it’s mostly an excuse for people to walk around in minimal clothing and get drunk (not that those are bad things, especially if you’ve got the body to pull it off). At least that’s what it seems like along Wilton Drive during Wicked Manors, the area’s premiere Halloween event. Wicked Manors is usually the place for Halloween’s most creative costumes. And this year’s theme, “7 Deadly Sins,” is sure to inspire guests to dress over-the-top The Pride Center at Equality Park hosts and benefits from the annual block party. Wilton Drive is closed from Five Points to 20th St. and revelers fill the streets, taking in the numerous music stages and events at the area’s bars and clubs. Last year’s attendance was estimated at 25,000, and it all takes place from 6 to 11 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 31. Remember the $5 entry fee benefits the Pride Center so don’t be stingy. Tuck a five in the g string and drop it in the donation box on your way in. For more information, go to wickedmanors.org. As fun as it may be, Wicked Manors isn’t the be-all and end-all of Halloween. LGBTQ Documentary Opens Fort Lauderdale Film Festival J.W. Arnold

I

n 1985, handsome upcoming actor Mark Patton landed the lead in the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster film, “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge.” But, instead of becoming a young Hollywood leading man, Patton found himself facing a stark reality: he was a young, closeted gay man starring in a subversively queer film that was maligned by fans, failed at the box office and destroyed his career. Patton retreated from show business and left the country, unaware of the growing reappraisal of “Freddy’s Revenge” and the cult status it achieved. Patton, out of hiding after more than 30 years, has finally embraced the film and confronted his personal demons by telling his story in a new documentary, “Scream Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street.” The compelling documentary will receive its Florida premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival on Friday, Nov. 1 at Savor Cinema, in conjunction with the Popcorn Frights Film Festival. The film, directed by Roman Chimienti and Tyler Jensen, examines how attitudes towards the controversial sequel have changed, along with the social mores of both Hollywood and society. Interviews with celebrities, film historians, local Fort Lauderdale industry personalities, and the original cast and crew—including his costars and Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund—round out the story of how the gayest horror film of all time ever got made. “It’s a totally different world today,” Patton said of the industry in a telephone interview. “The people who kept (gay actors) in the closet were the casting directors, agents

and managers. They would scare kids into believing they’ll be thrown away. Oddly, so many of those casting directors and mangers were gay.” Detailing the homophobia and AIDSphobia of the mid-1980s as a closeted actor in Hollywood, Patton, now 55, retraces his career missteps and finally confronts the film’s writer, David Chaskin, who vehemently denied inserting the gay subtext into the story until just recently. Patton also publicly addresses his own nightmare with AIDS and how he barely survived the plague that wiped out his friends and former partner, “Dallas” cast member Timothy Patrick Murphy. Patton recalled an event that occurred on his 20th birthday when a group of gay friends took him to see a “witch doctor” for a fortune-telling session. “This was pre-AIDS and he told me that I wouldn’t like what he was going to tell me,” Patton said. “He told me my karma was to be a witness. Whatever was coming, I would be safe. Those friends are gone now and I am a witness to a horrifying time in history. I want to arm young people with knowledge and honor my friends who are gone or have lived through it.” Patton is now working on more film projects, but he yearns to be 25 again. “Today, truly unique people are becoming movie stars,” he pointed out, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or general weirdness. “Show business is never going to be an easy place, it is always going to be toxic and mean. You have to be tough to stay in that game, but these kids are going to make it.”

“Scream Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street” will be screened at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1 at Savor Cinema, 503 S.E. 6th St. in Fort Lauderdale. For tickets and a full schedule of the 150 films being screened during the festival, Nov. 1 – 17, go to FLIFF.com.

Gay Men’s Chorus Announces 10th Anniversary Season

T

he Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida is celebrating its tenth anniversary in a big way with an entertaining, ambitious and nostalgic series of programs. “For our 10th anniversary, we polled the chorus members and our audiences, so we could highlight all the best moments from our history,” explained executive director Mark Kent. To open the season, the chorus presents its traditional holiday concert at the Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, Dec. 14, and for the third year, the chorus will repeat that concert on Sunday, Dec. 15 with a special celebrity guest artist at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood. “American Idol” season 6 winner Jordin Sparks will perform seasonal favorites, along with the 120 men of the chorus and a live orchestra, in the new $150 million Hard Rock Live concert venue at the resort. Every year, the creative team develops a storyline for their holiday concert. In this case, “Somewhere in my Memory” by Mark Hayes, a touching song about Alzheimer’s Disease, provides that theme. It’s also a very personal cause for artistic director Harold Dioquino, whose father in the Philippines suffers from the disease, and the chorus is partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association to raise awareness. In conjunction with the Pride of the Americas festival coming to Fort Lauderdale next year, at their next concerts, the chorus will debut, “Unbreakable: The Untold Stories of Our Community,” on April 24 and 25 at the Sunshine Cathedral.

Composed by Tony Award-nominee Andrew Lippa (“I Am Harvey Milk,” “The Addams Family,” “Big Fish”), the new musical weaves together 120 years of LGBTQ struggles and courage, illuminated by lesser-known historical figures, including Jane Addams, the first woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 and an early lesbian activist; Lem Billings, John F. Kennedy’s best friend, a closeted gay man seated at the side of the most powerful man on the planet; and Sylvia Rivera, a mother of the transgender community. The work beautifully weaves together the themes of awareness and activism and seeks to illuminate decades of setbacks and progress in the United States, said Dioquino, who also noted the piece was co-commissioned by several leading gay men’s choruses. “As you would expect from a Broadway composer, ‘Unbreakable’ is a very theatrical piece of music, a choral Broadway approach. It’s very upbeat and melodic,” Dioquino added. The chorus officially marks its 10th anniversary and concludes the season during Pride Month on June 26 and 27 with “Homecoming” at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. The musical program will honor a decade of joyful music, magic and mayhem. Former members will be invited to return and rehearse with the chorus for the big concert. “We plan to not only celebrate all we’ve accomplished in 10 years, but also our loyal supporters and all our fans in the audience,” Kent said, promising a special program that will also set the tone for the next decade.
