My partner and I frequent Houston’s quite often. They have the best ribs and stuffed baked potatoe around. Hands down. Most. days after work, or if we are in between appts at supper time, we just order it to go from the bar. I run in and pick it up and we eat it sleevelessly in the convenience of our home

Geez people, when is enough?? Does every piece of land have to be taken down and have (more) high-priced (unnecessary) investor residences built? What is the occupancy rate as opposed to the number of actual dwellings that are vacant? If I wanted to live in a concrete jungle, I’d have stayed in Miami-Dade! If you want a long term investment, I have 2 words: PARKING GARAGE! SMH

I heard it’s gonna have a drive through plastic surgery clinic open 24/7.

Someone please tell them that this is south Florida where people attend CHURCH in sleeveless shirts, shorts and flip flops.

I was in that same Houston’s last summer and a woman was in there wearing a halter top dress that barely covered her nipples. She was being stared at by both men and women but no one on the staff brought her a tee shirt to put on.

This site is so ready for a much needed redevelopment. All goes hand and hand with development on the old Church of Science site. Final that barren corridor of NE 26th St will shine!

Perhaps in the future we might ALWAYS schedule this celebration on either a Friday or Saturday night (or both). It works for Thanksgiving, and it would work for Wicked Manors.

Lame. This sucks. More new construction eyesores. Stripping the street of it’s character. Sucks. Next vote that comes up I’m voting against these commissioner knuckleheads.

Kinda bullshit story tho. Says they were holding it on Monday to “help the bars” even tho all the bars wanted the event to happen on Friday or Saturday!

You will have to to let us know how it works out being on a work and school nite. Maybe next year it will be held on a nite much more convenient ! Security should be a cinch on a Monday work and school nite

f you didn’t think South Florida was gayfriendly, this may change your mind. Five Florida cities earned perfect scores in this year’s Human Rights Campaign Foundation Municipal Equality Index, including South Florida’s own Wilton Manors and West Palm Beach. The index focuses on LGBT equality. “Our city’s inclusive laws and policies attract amazing people to live and work in West Palm Beach,” West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio told the Palm Beach County Human Rights Campaign. “West Palm Beach is a wonderful place for LGBTQ people - and others - to live, study, play, work, raise families and retire.” The MEI ranked 506 municipalities, looking at their laws, municipal services, and more. Also earning perfect scores were Miami Beach, Orlando, and St. Petersburg. Five out of the 20 Florida municipalities earned 100 points, from a total of 60 cities nationally earning perfect scores.

Fifteen of Florida’s cities made the list without top scores. Gainesville came close to perfect with a 98, with Miami Shores at 91. Oakland Park and Tampa both received an 86 while Fort Lauderdale earned an 80. Pembroke Pines came next at 78. Coral Gables lagged behind at 61, followed by Hialeah, Miami and Jacksonville at 49 and Daytona Beach at 48. Hollywood received a 43 and Port Saint Lucie a 30. Cape Coral landed on the lower side of the ranking, receiving a score of 25. Tallahassee also received a score, but at the time of publication the ranking was not available.

pride forT lauderdale sTill happening; slaTed for feb. 26 Organizers say this year’s event will appeal to everyone

Michael d’Oliveira

A

fter months of visiting other pride festivals around the country, most recently in Las Vegas, Miik Martorell said he and the other organizers of next year’s “Pride Fort Lauderdale on the Beach” will be ready to put on the coming festivities. “We’re actually doing a lot of things differently. We want to be inclusive to the community as whole. We don’t want it to just be a Pride event, but be a pride event that goes after all areas of the community,” said Martorell, president of Pride. In September, Fort Lauderdale officials approved Pride’s permit – the last big hurdle for the group to put on the event. “We have just a couple small adjustments left.” Next year’s event, scheduled for Feb. 26 at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, will include areas devoted to family, with the help of South Florida Family Pride, sports, history, and seniors. The time is tentatively set for either 12 to 9 p.m. or 12 to 8 p.m. “Mark your calendars for this. We will be participating in having a family friendly area just for you!” wrote South Florida Family Pride on its Facebook page as part of its participation announcement. There will be an area that promotes the decision by those who don’t want to drink. “It’s an area where they don’t have to feel the pressure to drink. A lot of people, who are recovering alcoholics, feel left out at Pride,” said Martorell. Organizers also say they plan to celebrate the transgender community and “bridge the gap in that regard. We’re trying to cover our bases as much as possible. It’s just really about all of us getting together.”

Helping with a 40th anniversary of the history of Pride will be the Stonewall National Museum & Archives and the World AIDS Museum. In regards to sports, “We [got the idea for] a sports area when we went to Montreal. We want to get the leagues involved. South Florida has a lot of leagues.” Last year organizers attempted to meld the party atmosphere of a traditional PrideFest with a family area, but it didn’t go over so well. One woman, who was shirtless but wearing pasties covering her nipples, was asked to put on a t-shirt because there were children at the event. She complained of being treated differently than the boys running around in skimpy underwear. “It’s a double standard. This festival is sponsored by condoms and lube. You have guys running around here in thongs and assless chaps and I have to put on a top? This is ridiculous,” she told SFGN at the time. “Give me a break.” The other pride festivals which Martorell and others visited for ideas include Austin, San Diego, Charlotte, Santa Fe, Toronto, New York, San Francisco, Fort Meyers, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Orlando and Philadelphia. Admission will be free but parking at the beach is not. Other possible parking lots Pride is working on, connected via a free shuttle, are the Galleria Mall and Hagen Park in Wilton Manors. Those parking locations will be confirmed as the event gets closer. Organizers are also attempting to get a reduced rate for Water Taxi service to the event.

The public is welcome to attend the meetings held to organize Pride Fort Lauderdale, which are held every other Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Pink Sub in Wilton Manors. For more information, call 754-222-2234, check Pride’s Facebook page or visit PrideFortLauderdale.org. 4

early voting underway in south florida (Sun-Sentinel) Early in-person voting began Monday with steady streams of voters in Broward, Palm Beach and MiamiDade counties. Through Nov. 6, early voting lasts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 15 sites in Palm Beach County, 21 locations in Broward and 30 places in Miami-Dade. Registered voters can vote at any site in their county, unlike Election Day when you have to vote at your precinct. Broward reported less than a 30-minute wait at all of its earlyvoting sites. At the Fort Lauderdale Branch Library/Art Serv, a line of about three dozen voters snaked out the door by 11 a.m. Elections officials project that turnout for this year’s heated presidential race could push voter participation beyond the nearly 70 percent of eligible voters who cast ballots in Broward and Palm Beach counties during the 2012 presidential election. Vote-by-mail ballots are already arriving at voters’ homes.

HEALTH roup sues over some broward ballots missing medical marijuana Question

(Sun Sentinel) A group advocating for the legalization of marijuana sued the Broward County Supervisor of Elections on Thursday after some mail-in ballots did not include a question about a state constitutional amendment on allowing medical marijuana. NORML of Florida, a chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, filed the lawsuit against county Supervisor of Elections Dr. Brenda Snipes. It asked a county court judge to require that the elections office distribute new ballots to all voters who have received vote-by-mail ballots and to include information that explains that Amendment 2 had not been included on previous ballots. “The end result of this error is catastrophic and cataclysmic as it applies to this ballot item, effectively disenfranchising voters and eliminating the right to vote on certain matters which have been lawfully placed on the ballot,” the lawsuit says. The amendment needs 60 percent of the vote to pass. “Every voter and vote, therefore, is critical,” the lawsuit says. Snipes did not immediately respond to an email or phone call Thursday after the lawsuit was filed. The lawsuit comes after Anne Sallee, a former Oakland Photo: Facebook.

Voters can request one until Nov. 2. Changes in state law increased the number of days and hours allowed for early voting after long delays in 2012. The state also changed limits on the types of locations that can be used for early voting is allowing for larger venues. Being able to use fairgrounds and community centers allows room for more voting stations and ballot printers, which should accommodate voters faster, Palm Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher said. Early voting, as well as on Election Day, requires showing a photo ID that includes a signature. Valid forms of identification can include a driver’s license, ID card issued by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, U.S. passport, military ID card, student ID card, retirement center ID, neighborhood association ID, debit or credit card, public assistance ID, veteran health ID, government employee ID or a concealed weapons permit.

Park commissioner, reported that her ballot did not include Amendment 2. Sallee said her husband’s ballot, and those of a couple of neighbors, were also missing the question. There are multiple versions of ballots, depending on where a voter lives in the county, so not everyone was affected. It is unclear how many ballots did not include the question. Norman Kent, one of the attorneys representing NORML of Florida, said he had received four calls about the error as of Thursday afternoon. Kent, who is based in Fort Lauderdale, is the national vice chairman of NORML’s board of directors.

lgbT republican group declines Topto endorse Trump

(CNN) The Log Cabin Republicans, one of the country’s most influential LGBT Republican groups, announced Saturday that it would not back the party’s presidential nominee, Donald Trump. The group, while praising Trump as “perhaps the most proLGBT presidential nominee in the history of the Republican Party,” said it had objections to views held by some of Trump’s advisers and his support for a bill that would protect people who disagree with same-sex marriage from federal penalties. “Log Cabin Republicans have long emphasized that we are not a single-issue organization, nor are our members singleissue voters,” the group said in a press release. It added that it will instead focus on down-ballot races to preserve Republican majorities in Congress. Trump has occasionally mentioned LGBT Americans as a presidential candidate, most notably in the aftermath of the attack on a gay Orlando nightclub in June and his acceptance speech at the Republican convention in July. In that speech, The Washington Blade noted, he became the first GOP nominee to positively mention LGBT rights in that setting.

s

NATIONAL enate democrats aim to block lgbT measure from defense bill

(AP) Senate Democrats are intent on keeping out a provision from the annual defense policy bill that they say would undercut protections against workplace discrimination based on sexual or gender orientation. In a letter delivered Tuesday, the lawmakers called the provision dangerous. They said the measure would permit religiously affiliated federal contractors to refuse to interview a job candidate whose faith differs from theirs and to fire employees that marry their same-sex partners or use birth control. But Republican proponents of the measure have described the provision as a bulwark for religious freedom. The House added the provision to its version of the defense policy bill. The Senate did not, leading to a standoff. The divide could threaten the timely approval of the defense legislation, which authorizes military programs for the new fiscal year that started Oct. 1. Congress returns after the Nov. 8 election for a lame-duck session and will be under pressure to resolve differences between the two chambers and get a final bill to the president’s desk. Forty lawmakers, joined by two independents, signed the letter to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, the chairmen of the Armed Services panels. The committee’s top Democrats, Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island and Adam Smith of Washington state, also received the letter. But Republicans control deliberations over the bill, known formally as the National Defense Authorization Act. They said the provision is at odds “with the values and beliefs that continue to advance our great nation,” yet there is no overt threat in the letter to block the defense authorization bill if the measure is added. “This discrimination erodes the freedoms that our military has fought for generations to protect,” the lawmakers wrote.

POLITICS out on the trail tim lonergan, the current mayor of oakland park. Photo: Facebook.

gay candidaTes collide in oaKland parK race

John McDonald

T

im Lonergan is asking the voters of Oakland Park for another term. A gay man, Lonergan has served three and half years on the city commission and is currently Oakland Park’s sitting mayor. “There’s more to accomplish,” Lonergan told SFGN in a telephone conversation Monday afternoon just as early voting kicked off in Broward County. A Wisconsin native, Lonergan moved to Florida in 2000. He joined the Oakland Park Volunteer Corps in 2006 and began bicycling around the city, getting to know the lay of the land. “That’s when I noticed we didn’t have garbage cans at all of our bus stops,” he said. Lonergan took care of that issue and has moved on to numerous other projects during his tenure. He cites the addition of a fulltime detective assigned to the city, a new fire truck, an emerging culinary arts district and millions in grants for improved public school facilities as proof Oakland Park is moving in the right direction. “We’re doing the right things and home values are going up,” Lonergan said. The Oakland Park election is an interesting format as nine candidates compete for three commission seats. Four of the candidates – Lonergan, Mitchell Stollberg-Appleyard, Scott Herman and Mitch Rosenwald – are openly gay. Lonergan married his partner, Floyd Adams, last year shortly after the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which granted marriage rights to same-sex couples nationwide. The couple have been together for 21 years. “He’s by my side,” Lonergan said of his spouse. “I’m very proud of who I am, but I’ve never been the kind of person that pushes it down everyone’s throat.” Stollberg-Appleyard’s campaign has raised

awareness of the deteriorating conditions of several public school facilities. “Our schools our crumbling around our students,” he said. “They are breathing in mildew and mold. Roofs are leaking. Rust is coming out of bathroom faucets. This is not how a child should be going to school.” Lonergan identified Northeast High School has a priority for improvement. He said he spoke with Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie about the need to spend bond and grant money on upgrading Oakland Park’s schools. “I’m tired of hearing families say they are moving out of our city because they have kids now and they need to enroll them in good schools,” Lonergan said. Meanwhile, Herman, who narrowly lost a special election for the Oakland Park Commission in March, has questioned Lonergan’s campaign finances. Donations from real estate developer William Murphy to Lonergan are, in Herman’s opinion, evidence of special interests influence. “I’m disappointed Scott keeps bringing up all these things,” Lonergan said. “He’s (Herman) stirring up trouble to make himself look good. I’m not bought off by anyone.” Herman, a disabled combat Iraq War veteran, is campaigning on the slogan “principles over politics.” This is his fourth attempt to win elected public office in Broward County and he has made veteran’s issues and homeless outreach central tenets of his campaign. Rosenwald is seeking public office for the first time. With a background in social work, Rosenwald said he is “proud of the city’s direction” and wants it to “grow smartly.” In 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated Oakland Park to have a population of a little more than 41,000. Lonergan described the city as a “blue collar, hard-working community.” 10.26.2016 •

What is TRUVADA for PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)?

TRUVADA is a prescription medicine that can be used for PrEP to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection when used together with safer sex practices. This use is only for adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This includes HIV-negative men who have sex with men and who are at high risk of getting infected with HIV-1 through sex, and male-female sex partners when one partner has HIV-1 infection and the other does not. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV-1. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP?

Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: uYou must be HIV-negative. You must get tested to make sure that you do not

already have HIV-1 infection. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. uMany HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting TRUVADA for PrEP or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: uYou must continue using safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. uYou must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. uTo further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: • Know your HIV-1 status and the HIV-1 status of your partners. • Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months or when your healthcare provider tells you. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV-1 to infect you. • Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior. • Have fewer sex partners. • Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. • If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. uIf you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: uToo much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach-area pain, cold or blue hands and feet, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or fast or abnormal heartbeats. uSerious liver problems. Your liver may become large and tender, and you may develop fat in your liver. Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach-area pain.

uYou may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you

are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking TRUVADA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. uWorsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and take TRUVADA, your hepatitis may become worse if you stop taking TRUVADA. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider. If your healthcare provider tells you to stop taking TRUVADA, they will need to watch you closely for several months to monitor your health. TRUVADA is not approved for the treatment of HBV.

Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP? Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you also take lamivudine (Epivir-HBV) or adefovir (HEPSERA).

What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP? Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include: uKidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider may do

blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA for PrEP. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA for PrEP. uBone problems, including bone pain or bones getting soft or thin, may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. uChanges in body fat, which can happen in people taking TRUVADA or medicines like TRUVADA. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? uAll your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have or

have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis virus infection.

uIf you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if TRUVADA can

harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Pregnancy Registry: A pregnancy registry collects information about your health and the health of your baby. There is a pregnancy registry for women who take medicines to prevent HIV-1 during pregnancy. For more information about the registry and how it works, talk to your healthcare provider. uIf you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. The medicines in TRUVADA can pass to your baby in breast milk. If you become HIV-1 positive, HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk. uAll the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. uIf you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA for PrEP, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include ledipasvir with sofosbuvir (HARVONI). You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Thousands of gay men in UK to be pardoned for now-abolished sex offenses Bianca Britton CNN

T

ens of thousands of gay and bisexual men who were convicted of nowabolished sexual offenses in Britain will be posthumously pardoned, the government announced Thursday. The government proposal will also make it easier for living Britons, convicted years ago of since-decriminalized sexual behavior, to clear their names. The proposal has been dubbed the “Turing Law” -- named after World War II codebreaker Alan Turing, subject of the 2014 film “The Imitation Game.” Turing committed suicide in 1954 after he was subjected to chemical castration as punishment for homosexual activity. In 2013, nearly 60 years later, he received a posthumous royal pardon from Queen Elizabeth II. Anyone previously convicted of the abolished laws can already apply through the UK’s Home Office to have their names cleared and wiped from criminal record checks. But under the new law, the government will automatically pardon living men convicted of historical sexual offenses “who would be innocent of any crime today,” Justice Minister Sam Gyimah said in a statement. “Through pardons and the existing disregard process we will meet our manifesto commitment to put right these wrongs,” Gyimah said. Private homosexual acts for men aged over 21 were decriminalized in England and Wales in 1967. However the law was not changed in Scotland until 1980 or in Northern Ireland until 1982. ‘An admission of guilt’ Brighton resident George Montague, who was convicted in 1974 for gross indecency with a man, told CNN he won’t accept the government’s pardon because “it’s an admission of guilt.”

Instead, he wants an apology for the way he and many others were treated. “In my view if you’re born only able to love and be in love with another a man -which means you’re gay -- then it can’t be a crime. How can that be a crime? It’s not fair,” Montague said. “The law didn’t apply to heterosexuals -they could have sex anywhere. But if you were gay and all you did was kiss your boyfriend in public you were convicted.” He said he wouldn’t stop fighting until he received an apology from the government. “We were treated very badly. I can’t understand it, even today, that there are so many people who do not understand or accept homosexuality.” Announcement ‘welcomed’ Andrew Gilliver from the LGBT Foundation in the UK told CNN that while the government’s announcement is welcomed, it’s long overdue. “What’s unfortunate is that it’s taken this long. Obviously in that time (since the laws were abolished) so many people’s lives have been ruined,” he said, adding that family relationships and career opportunities were destroyed. On Friday Parliament is set to debate a bill by MP John Nicolson which proposes a blanket pardon be applied to everyone living so that they don’t have to go through the disregard process via the UK’s Home Office. However, the government has said it will not support the Nicolson bill because it “could lead, in some cases, to people claiming to be cleared of offenses that are still crimes.” The government has already rejected several applicants under the current law because the activity was non-consensual or the other person involved was under 16 years old.

"The law didn’t apply to heterosexuals -- they could have sex anywhere. But if you were gay and all you did was kiss your boyfriend in public you were convicted." - George Montague, Brighton resident

Alan Turing, age 16. Submitted photo.

Closing a loophole? Gyimah says he worries the consequences of the Nicolson bill haven’t been fully thought through. “A blanket pardon, without the detailed investigations carried out by the Home Office under the disregard process, could see people guilty of an offense which is still a crime today claiming to be pardoned,” he said. However Paul Twocock of the Stonewall organization, which campaigns for the equality of LGBT people across Britain, said in a statement to CNN that he doesn’t agree with the government’s interpretation of the proposed bill. “It explicitly excludes pardoning anyone convicted of offenses that would still be illegal today,” he said. Twocock said the proposed Nicolson bill

“closes a loophole which means some gay and bi men who are still alive and living with those convictions still can’t have them deleted, despite them being unjust and not illegal today.” Gay rights around the world In recent years homosexuals around the world have fought to be pardoned for same-sex crimes that have long since been abolished. Earlier this month Germany announced plans to compensate thousands of men who were convicted under an old law for their sexual preferences, Deutsche Welle reported. And in New Zealand, lawmakers introduced a petition in July seeking a formal apology and a pardon for those convicted of same-sex acts under laws abolished 30 years ago.

Ten Trans soldiers seeK formal gender change (AP) Within weeks of the Pentagon allowing transgender service members to serve openly, Army officials said 10 soldiers have formally asked to be recognized as their new, preferred gender. The small number represents only those who have publicly said they are transgender, and doesn’t include soldiers who may be considering or beginning gender transition or those who don’t yet want to make an official paperwork change. Gen. Mark Milley, chief of staff of the Army, said the key now is to educate the force, particularly commanders who will have to make decisions about soldiers in their units who request a gender change. “Is the army ready? Well, we are educating ourselves, and we are trying to get ready,” Milley said in an interview with The Associated Press. “We’re well-past the issue of debating and arguing about transgender. We are now into execution, to make sure the program is carried

out with diligence, dignity, respect.” The Pentagon policy took effect Oct. 1, and Army Secretary Eric Fanning approved the service’s new transgender guidelines earlier this month. Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced in June that he was ending the ban on transgender individuals serving openly in the military.

In late October 2012, the group gave a “qualified” endorsement for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, noting that, while he may not be the first choice for voters with LGBT issues as a priority, Romney was better qualified overall and not likely to “waste his precious time” in the White House with attacks on the community. In early September 2008, Log Cabin’s board issued an enthusiastic endorsement of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, calling him an “inclusive Republican” who bucked his own party by voting against the anti-gay Federal Marriage Act. Meanwhile, numerous LGBT groups have endorsed Clinton: the Human Rights Campaign, the Lesbian Political Action Committee, the Congressional LGBT Caucus political action committee, and the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. She has also won the endorsement of several statewide LGBT political groups, including Equality California and Equality Pennsylvania. She has the backing of prominent LGBT elected officials, such as former U.S. Rep.

Barney Frank and five of the six current LGBT members of the U.S. House (only Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona has not). polls pAst And present Historically, LGBT voters have supported the Democratic presidential candidate over the Republican one by a margin of about 3 to 1. Over the years, the polls suggest that many LGBT people who used to identify as “independent” are now identifying as Republican or Democrat. In September 2012, a Gallup study found 43 percent of LGBT-identified adults said they were “independent,” 13 percent Republican, and 44 percent Democratic. An NBC poll in September of this year found that only 13 percent identified as independents, compared to 18 percent “Republicans or Republicanleaners” and 70 percent “Democrats and Democratic-leaners.” Over a shorter span of time, support for Clinton among LGBT voters has also grown. In a Gallup survey in May, 54 percent supported Clinton and 18 percent Trump. But in the NBC poll in September of 1,728 registered voters who identified as “homosexual or bisexual,” 72 percent said they would vote for Clinton; 20 percent for Trump. (Including the Libertarian and Green party candidates in the mix, the NBC survey found 63 percent of LGBT voters supported Clinton, 15 percent Trump, 13 percent Libertarian Gary Johnson, and eight percent Green Party Jill Stein.) Looking at data going back to 1990 (the first year the National Election Pool exit poll

election • donald trump sought to identify “gay, lesbian, and bisexual” voters), the lowest LGB vote for Republicans came in 2008 when only 19 percent of LGB voters supported Republican John McCain. A 2012 exit poll conducted by the New York Times and other major media outlets found that 76 percent of LGB voters supported Democratic incumbent President Obama. That meant, at best, 24 percent for Republican Mitt Romney. the cAmpAign rollercoAster Donald Trump’s most pro-LGBT moments in the two-year campaign came in reaction to the June 12 mass shooting this year at an LGBT nightclub called Pulse in Orlando. He immediately expressed sympathy over the 49 lives lost and 50 people injured. During his nationally televised acceptance speech to the Republican National Convention in July, he reiterated his concern to the GOP –a party

whose platform has been notoriously hostile to equal rights for LGBT people. “Only weeks ago, 49 wonderful Americans were savagely murdered by an Islamic terrorist — this targeting the LGBTQ community. No good, and we’re gonna stop it,” said Trump. “As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful, foreign ideology –believe me.” Then, departing from the text of his speech, Trump added, “And I have to say, as a Republican, it is so nice to hear you cheering for what I just had to say. Thank you.” But for many in the LGBT community, Trump’s statement of solidarity with the LGBT community was undercut by his insistence that the Orlando massacre was made possible because the U.S. allows Muslims, who he said want to “murder gays,” to immigrate. Trump has called for a ban on allowing Muslims to enter the country (more

recently, he’s called for “extreme vetting” of Muslims). Trump also confused and dismayed many by seeming to signal initial support of transgender people in the North Carolina HB2 (bathroom) controversy only to say later that the issue should be “left to the states.” And his repeated promise to appoint a Supreme Court nominee in the mold of Antonin Scalia, who had the most anti-gay voting record of any justice on the nation’s highest court, will not likely earn him any LGBT votes. Hillary Clinton has repeatedly included words of support for LGBT equality in her stump speeches. She addressed the 2015 national dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, unabashedly putting herself on record –early in the primary season — as supporting numerous positions favored by LGBT voters. Among other things, she promised, “as president, I would push to cut off federal funding for any public child

welfare agency that discriminates against LGBT people.” She visited Orlando to show solidarity with the LGBT community following the Pulse massacre. On LGBT issues, she stumbled twice: Once by saying that Nancy Reagan had helped lead public support for the fight against AIDS and a second time by saying that President Bill Clinton signed the “Defense of Marriage Act” as a way to head off a constitutional amendment banning marriage for same-sex couples. Internal campaign emails made public by Wikileaks this month show that LGBT Democratic activists moved quickly to urge Clinton to correct the record on both of those statements. She did correct her remark concerning Reagan and apologized. She said her DOMA statement reflected her recollection of “private discussions” she participated in. In one of the leaked email, a staffer said Clinton would “never approve a true walkback” of the comment.

Then, in a 2013 video after leaving her Secretary of State post, Clinton said she had “learned” and “come to believe” that LGBT Americans “deserve the rights of citizenship –that includes marriage….I support it personally and as a matter of policy and law.” On CNN, trump said, “I don’t say anything. ‘Resilient Women’ Photo Documentary Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month Brittany Ferrendi

ust about everyone is connected to someone who’s been affected by breast cancer. Here’s a chance to learn some of their stories. For the ninth year, photographer Susan S. Buzzi’s work is taking over Broward Main Library’s sixth floor for ‘Resilient Women,’ a photo documentary showcasing breast cancer survivors through photography and sharing their personal stories. The gallery will run through the end of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “They are all so different, age-wise, ethnicity, yet they are obviously sharing that disease,” Buzzi told SFGN. “And they all have conquered it and have traveled their journal in their own way. And that’s why we like to have the stories by the photographs.” Buzzi’s oldest subject is 99 years old. The youngest was 28 when she was diagnosed — and recently gave birth, which Buzzi describes as a “miracle baby.” “It’s amazing that every single survivor shares (the determination to just get through it),” Buzzi said. “It’s like a strange camaraderie. It’s like a sisterhood that I’m not a part of but I’m like an honorary member.” Buzzi started the project by reaching out to people and medical centers nine years ago. In just seven months, she photographed 50 people for her photo documentary. “Every single person, where they are photographed is their choice,” she said. “Whether they want to be by their partner, their spouse, their animal … with their doctors, in their studio.” One survivor, Lily Mazurek, approached Buzzi on her own to become a part of her photo documentary. “She’s a great photographer, great easy to pose for,” she said, standing in front of her own portrait within the gallery. “I think the picture is pretty natural.” Mazurek chose to pose in a garden behind where she used to work. “I like gardens. With a name like Lily you can’t help it.” Mazurek was diagnosed 20 years ago in 1996 over the phone with her doctor. “For me, emotionally, it just threw me through a loop, it hit me so hard.” The gallery began nine years ago when Buzzi and the project manager of the Broward Main library, Barbara

Miller, came together to write for a grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation. They received the grant, using the funds to run the gallery for the next three consecutive years and partial funding for the fourth. She then branched out to different programming and received new sponsorships. Ever since the end of the fourth year, Buzzi funds nearly the entire gallery by herself. This year, Art Frenzie — a gallery that specializes in framing — sponsored by giving $200 of frames and mats towards the photo documentary. Art Frenzie is co-owned by Debbie Burke and Bernadette Zizzo, the latter a breast cancer survivor on display within the photo documentary. “When I see Sue, I get happy, so I know it’s going to be

fun and I know what it’s about. It’s about fighting,” Zizzo said. Zizzo’s photo depicts her leaning against a tree, laughing. “We both chose the tree. I was drawn to that tree. It’s a very strong tree. It’s very grounded. Larger than life.” Being in and out of the hospital and in recovery — including six surgeries within eight weeks to fight off an infection — she felt inspired to see herself in that photograph for the first time. One of the administrators went through breast cancer and is also on display. “I don’t see myself like that. People look at me and say, ‘Wow you look so good,’ and I don’t feel that way because I’m so tired … You don’t think you’re looking well, because you always have that tired feeling. Down, sleeping a lot, drained. Wow, I do look healthy there. Happy, healthy.” In addition to Art Frenzie, Broward P.E.T. Imaging Center approached her to sponsor this year’s gallery. The photo documentary will conclude in 2017, marking the tenth anniversary since the opening. The final showing will coincide with the second part of Buzzi’s book, “I am a Strong Woman,” a collection of photos and narratives of breast cancer survivors. “All of these women have struggled, but they all have their own journey, story to tell,” Buzzi said. “That’s why they’re up there.”

The U.N.’s LGBT initiative, Free & Equal, released the following quote from Guterres: “I appeal to all governments and societies to promote the values of tolerance and respect for diversity, and to build a world where no has to be afraid because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.” Guterres, 67, was appointed by acclamation on Oct. 13 to serve as the U.N.’s next secretary general. He replaces Ban Ki-moon of South Korea. Guterres served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and leader of the European nation’s Socialist Party. Portugal decriminalized homosexuality

espite a spotty record on LGBT rights that included co-sponsorship of the anti-gay First Amendment Defense Act, Sen. John McCain of Arizona picked up the endorsement of LGBT conservative group Log Cabin Republicans. Log Cabin Republicans came out with their latest round of endorsements for United States Senate races on Thursday. McCain, the GOP’s failed presidential nominee in 2008, is among the six endorsed candidates. Joining McCain are: Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R- NH), Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), who will receive support from LCR PAC in their campaigns for re-election. Interesting to note, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida was not endorsed by the Log Cabin Republicans. “As members of the greatest deliberative body in the country, these endorsed United States Senators represent some of the most important voices in support of LGBT freedom,” Log Cabin Republicans President Gregory T. Angelo said in a statement released Thursday. The endorsement of McCain, who was a stalwart foe of same-sex marriage and who called the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell a “very sad day” marks a significant shift in the four-term Senator’s position on LGBT rights. Most notable of McCain’s shift was his vocal support of the confirmation of openly gay Eric Fanning as secretary of the Army. “McCain is in a tough re-election race, and he needs to broaden his coalition whenever he can. Discrimination against gays is now a big loser politically in most states, and that

even includes Arizona - which is not nearly as conservative as it used to be,” Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia told NBC News. “I’m grateful to have the support of the Log Cabin Republicans,” McCain said of his endorsement Thursday. “This organization does great work in supporting fiscally conservative values while championing equality through policy. I look forward to working to continuing to work with them in the U.S. Senate.” In U.S. House races, the Log Cabin Republicans endorsed seven candidates, including two from Florida. The endorsements are as follows: Congressman Mike Coffman, (R-CO), Carlos Curbelo (RFL), Charlie Dent (R-PA), Robert Dold (R-IL), John Katko (R-NY), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (RFL), Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ). Curbelo and Ros-Lehtinen represent districts in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. In a news release Curbelo said, “The Log Cabin Republicans have done important work building consensus on LGBT issues across the country. In Congress I have been proud to stand up for equality. I am honored to have the support of Republicans who understand that equality can never be a partisan issue.” Ros-Lehtinen, mother of a transgender man, stated: “I am grateful to once again count on the support of Log Cabin Republicans as we work together to achieve equality and justice for LGBT Americans. I will continue to promote inclusiveness and ensure the fair and equal treatment of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”

.S. Congressman Ted Deutch blasted U.S. Senator Marco Rubio for “using the LGBT community to advance his own political interests.” Speaking to a packed room Tuesday morning inside Pride Center at Equality Park, Deutch said Rubio’s reaction to the Pulse Nightclub massacre was shameful. After years of supporting anti-LGBT policies Rubio, Deutch said, attempted to recast himself as a savior to LGBT Floridians following the worst mass shooting in American history. “His actions need to be condemned,” Deutch said. “Using a community for political gain after a massacre like that is exactly what people hate about politics.” Rubio, a Republican, is in a tight race against Democrat Patrick Murphy for the Senate seat which could change the balance of power in Washington. A co-sponsor of the Equality Act, Deutch said he would continue to fight for LGBT rights on Capitol Hill. He said if Hillary Clinton is elected President, she will sign the Equality Act into law.

Among other things, the bill provides workplace protections for LGBT Americans. “In Florida, if you’re gay you can get married on the weekend and fired when you show up to your job on Monday, that just can’t stand,” Deutch said. Deutch was the featured speaker at the Pride Center’s weekly coffee and conversation program, a gathering geared towards seniors and boomers. Congressional redistricting has given Deutch more Broward County constituents. The three-term Congressman faces a Republican challenger, real estate agent Andrea McGee in the general election.

espite the nation’s largest gay Republican organization’s refusal to endorse Donald Trump for President, there are still some who refuse to abandon ship. Andy Eddy, a member of the Broward County Log Cabin Republicans, said he continues to support Trump. “I am a duly elected GOP committeeman in Broward County serving on the County Executive Committee as are others in our (LCR) group and we are supporting Donald Trump the Party’s nominee,” Eddy wrote in an e-mail to SFGN. On Saturday, the national Log Cabin Republicans released a statement saying the group would not endorse Trump. “Log Cabin Republicans have long emphasized that we are not a single-issue organization, nor are our members singleissue voters,” the group said in a press release. The snub did not come as a complete surprise to Eddy. “I don’t contribute to LCR PAC especially since I’m an outsider with limited means and no voice in that PAC. Yet, with that understanding, I have found I have a greater voting and meaningful voice dealing locally with the State and County Republican Party of Florida vs the Beltway,” Eddy writes. Although other Republicans such as Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush have declined to back

Trump, Eddy cited his loyalty to the party as just cause. “I must abide by my loyalty pledge unlike other politicians who are part of the ‘Never Trump’ movement and who violated their commitment by not remaining silent and subsequently going public in order to defeat the party’s duly elected nominee,” Eddy wrote in an email. Meanwhile, Peter Thiel, the openly gay tech entrepreneur, continues to support Trump and is scheduled to deliver a speech in Washington, D.C. next week on Trump’s behalf, reports Brietbart. Thiel, co-founder of PayPal, is a billionaire who spoke at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Thiel’s support for Trump forced Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to defend Thiel’s position on the giant social network’s board of directors. “We care deeply about diversity,” Zuckerberg posted on Facebook. “That’s easy to say when it means standing up for ideas you agree with. It’s a lot harder when it means standing up for the rights of people with different viewpoints to say what they care about….That’s ultimately what Facebook is about: giving everyone the power to share our experiences, so we can understand each other a bit better and connect us a little closer together.”

On Saturday, the national Log Cabin Republicans released a statement saying the group would not endorse Trump.

wesT palm beach moves To ban use of conversion Therapies wiTh minors Donald Cavanaugh

A

t its meeting on Oct. 24, the West Palm Beach City Commission voted unanimously to move “Ordinance No. 4666-16: Prohibition of conversion therapy as to minors” to the next step: a public hearing and second reading scheduled for Nov. 7. The Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC) encouraged city officials to support the ordinance. W. Trent Steele has taken the lead on the ordinance for the organization and noted that “Mayor [Jeri] Muoio has often expressed her concern about conversion therapy and its use with young people.”

Muoio introduced the item and Assistant City Attorney, Zoe Panarites spoke briefly listing some of the states and municipalities that have banned use of such practices. The list includes Miami, Miami Beach, Wilton Manors, Cincinnati, Vermont, the District of Columbia and several more. She then introduced the city’s expert, Dr. Rachel Needle, a licensed psychologist who practices in West Palm Beach. Dr. Needle detailed the history of conversion therapy and how every major medical organization has condemned the practice as ineffective and even harmful when inflicted on already fragile children.

Public comment elicited two speakers opposed to the ordinance. One was a young man who seemed confused about commission procedures. The second was Julie Harren Hamilton, a psychiatrist who practices conversion therapy in West Palm Beach. A visit to her website shows a connection between her practice and the anti-gay organization, NARTH (National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality). Before the vote, several of the commissioners spoke in support of the ordinance and expressed pride that their city was in the vanguard of protecting LGBT children.

Re Elect Sheriff Scott Israel

or decades, the LGBT community of South Florida has had a contentious relationship with the Broward County Sheriff. Four years into his first term as sheriff, Scott Israel has demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment to LGBT citizens. For too long a time, we were apart from the community, rather than a part of it. Sheriff Israel has enthusiastically embraced who we are. He has participated in our festivals, spoken at our rallies, and marched in our parades. The Sheriff has been supportive of diversity in every way, even running recruitment ads here on the pages of SFGN. The management team of BSO is populated with gay men and gay women, at all levels, from deputies on the beat, to lawyers in our courts, and an increasing cross section of Hispanic, Asian and African-American personnel. It is outreach at its best. Beyond that, the Sheriff has engaged community policing, expanded juvenile interdiction programs, and

represented himself as a personable and populist voice for law enforcement. Like other administrators, he wants more money for his agency, which translates to seeking more funds to protect the public. Still, if these allocations are used for body cams and to control gun violence, they will have been worthy expenditures. Most importantly, with over 6,000 employees and a budget of over $700 million, the Sheriff must employ professionals more interested in policy and protecting the public than politics. This he has been able to do, and this he must continue to strive for. Sheriff Israel has done more than look for more weapons to win the war on crime. He has sought out programs, innovations, and modern techniques to change and alter the culture of law enforcement. That is no easy task. Every sheriff has been criticized for politicizing the office. Sheriff Israel is no different. It is up to him

to ensure and maintain unimpeachable integrity. Law enforcement can’t be for sale. Favors have no place in an agency where fairness must rule. SFGN is satisfied that Sheriff Israel has created an environment of inclusion for all. He has created a department administering justice fairly, and insisting upon professionalism at every level. He has conducted himself with dignity and respect, and deserves your vote for his re-election.

ou have no choice but to vote for Hillary Clinton. Your very life depends on it. This is LGBT History Month and we’re also at the close of a very contentious presidential campaign, an interesting convergence. It is often said that one thing we as a community learned from the AIDS epidemic was that we had to learn to organize since we were fighting for our lives. We have a new generation that does not know what that time was like, what that statement meant or how it shadows this election. The LGBT community of the 1980s was one in sheer shock. Gay men were dying and no one seemed to care and some officials went so far as to suggest that we should quarantine gay men. Some religious people suggested that AIDS was a message from God. Those in the medical sciences were not sure what they should do. And why? Because leadership from the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health did not feel that they should act quickly in a time of a majorhealth issue since they received silence from elected officials, namely President Ronald Reagan. Even Reagan’s own Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, admitted years later that he felt guilt for the many lives that were lost. In times of crisis, a president can make all the difference. What about today? We’re still fighting AIDS and funds need to be spent to find a cure. Apart from the epidemic, LGBT lives are at stake in other areas.

Take, for example, Uganda. The country keeps attempting to pass legislation that would make homosexuality a crime punishable by the death penalty. What does it have to do with the election in our country? Donald Trump has been endorsed by the very evangelicals who support this legislation. To date, it was only the Obama administration that has kept this from becoming law. If Donald Trump was elected, do we want take the chance? We’re not playing with the lives of our LGBT community. And how about here in the United States? Trump’s vice-presidential running mate believes in conversion therapy. Conversion therapy — and let’s not mince words here — is the torture and imprisonment of LGBT youth. It’s just the latest term of aversion therapy. Still not enough? When the Pulse Nightclub was the target of what looks like antigay terrorism. Trump at first would not mention the word “LGBT.” Instead, he said he would not allow Muslims into our country. The fact that the man who did this was a Muslim was all he cared about — as well as making a few campaign points. He did not care about our lives. Trump, after being criticized by that comment said then he’d stop terrorists from coming into this country who might do that again. What about the antigay terrorists who are Americans and already in this country? Oh, he’s standing on a stage with them, shaking their hands and accepting their endorsements. Vote like your lives depend on it. They do.

Mark Segal is the nation’s most-award-winning commentator in LGBT media. His recently published memoir, "And Then I Danced," is available on Amazon. com, Barnes & Noble or at your favorite bookseller.

Chablis’ brief brush with movie stardom happened during the same year as Ellen DeGeneres’ historic coming out. DeGeneres’ once popular sitcom was soon cancelled, and DeGeneres had a difficult time in finding work until her chat show put her back on top a few years later. In 1997, Hollywood wasn’t quite ready to embrace LGBT performers. Chablis went back to Savannah and performed at Club One until about a month before her death from pneumonia on September 8, 2016. She was 59 years old. Her obituaries noted that her final performance played to a packed house. Though she remained a star in Savannah,

The Lady Chablis was forgotten by the public at large, and by a film industry that should have embraced her unique personality. Nearly two decades after The Lady Chablis burst onto the silver screen, transgender actress Laverne Cox was nominated for two Emmy Awards: one for her work as an actress in the hit Netflix series “Orange is the New Black,” and another for producing the documentary “The T Word,” Cox has also graced the cover of Time Magazine, among many other honors. Cox, the first transgender person to become a bankable Hollywood celebrity, is without question a trailblazer who continues to open doors. But let’s not forget that a little over fifteen years earlier there was The Lady Chablis.

s it just me or does it seem as if there are massive apartment complexes popping up all over town? Although the Manor at Flagler Village, on Federal between 5th and 6th Avenues, has been around for a couple of years, I never thought to check out the restaurants there. They just seemed so…hetero. While visiting friends in Delray Beach, we dined at a Mellow Mushroom restaurant, that made me think of the one on Federal, which led to checking out the others in that mall. Although each is part of a chain (or mini-chain), all three offer design-your-own- dish options.

mellow mushroom 25 S.E. 6th Ave. Delray Beach 561-330-3040 525 N. Federal Highway #500 Fort Lauderdale 954-712-9527 MellowMushroom.com Imagine a bunch of mellowed-out hippies in the 1970s creating a restaurant. Now, update that restaurant for modern tastes. That’s exactly what you’ll find at Mellow Mushroom. The original MM was started by some hippies in Georgia in 1974. It didn’t take long for them to become capitalists, and by 1984 the restaurant opened a number of other locations and franchised. The Fort Lauderdale location is one of the newer outposts of this chain. MM may be franchised, but there’s still a kernel of the “do your own thing” aspect of hippie-dom as each location offers special dishes developed for its neighborhood. As you might expect from a former hippie joint, there are always plenty of options for vegetarians including the veggie patty

(made from quinoa, kale, brown rice and roasted mushrooms) and hoagies offer the option of tofu or tempeh instead of meat. Of course, pizzas figure prominently and many feature quaint, hippie names, such as; Kosmic Karma; with a red sauce base topped with feta and mozzarella cheese, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and Roma tomatoes with a pesto swirl, or the Magical Mystery Tour; with a pesto base with button and Portobello mushrooms, feta and mozzarella cheeses, spinach and jalapeños on a pesto basted crust. Since it’s all about individuality, in addition to pre-determined combinations there are build-your own versions of pizzas. The diner’s choice option also includes calzones or a “build your own” salad. Start with a base of greens for a couple of bucks and then add on the toppings, each reasonably priced. I opted for baby greens with feta, artichokes hearts and kalamata olives and the huge salad ended up costing less than $10. Combine that with a side, such as a bowl of soup, bruschetta or the yummy meatballs and you have a filling meal, featuring top of the line, wonderfully

flavorful ingredients, for less than $20. For those who are old enough and can still remember dining at hippie places in the ‘70s, they’ll recall that service could be a little, well, let’s be kind and use the word “spacey.” At MM our server was attentive, professional and friendly and managed to negotiate three couples, each wanting separate checks and making special requests, without any mixups. colAdA 525 N. Federal Highway #400 Fort Lauderdale 954-368-4705 ColadaHouse.com Colada, the second location of the popular Hollywood Cuban Coffeehouse, offers up familiar takes on exotic dishes and exotic takes on familiar dishes. The brunch options include; biscuits and gravy (the twist is the gravy is made with chorizo), Cuban eggs Benedict (featuring roast pork and black bean hollandaise), tres leche waffles or French toast and a torta Espana. The build-yourown concept at Colada begins at breakfast and includes a build-your-own breakfast sandwich brunch bowl and continues through lunch and dinner with fritas and meals in a bowl which start with a choice of protein, a base (rice, lettuce or spinach), toppings (beans, veggies, cheese, etc.) and a sauce. Don’t even get me started on the variety of empanadas, whether sweet or savory. Although they may not always be dished up with stellar presentation, they’re just like Abuelita used to make.

BrAss tAp 551 N. Federal Highway #600 Fort Lauderdale 754-200-8648 BrassTapBeerBar.com Continuing with the theme of doing your own thing, the Brass Tap franchise at this location is the only one, out of the 35 restaurants in the coast-to-coast chain, to have both an in-house brewing facility and full-service kitchen with a dedicated executive chef. Beers are brewed on site in the upper level of the bar, and if you find you can’t live without one of the 80 brews on tap, you can have it bottled to go. The menu is equally vast featuring inventive burgers, wings, salads and flatbreads. The dedication to the food aspect is so intense that the owner of this franchise installed a full-service convection oven to bake breads onsite. Among some of the more notable dishes are; spicy tuna lettuce wraps, Florida sweet corn fritters and a Korean barbecue pork sandwich, served with slivers of homemade pickles on a toasted, buttered baked on premises, brioche bun. Pepper Jack Mac-N-Cheese offers a rich cheesy sauce spiced up with a hint of pickled jalapeños, onion, garlic, tossed over spiral noodles, then topped with tempura crumbs and baked in individual cast-iron pans. The dish is so popular that it is also the base for a brunch dish; Hangover Mac-n-Cheese, which adds beer to the cheese sauce as well as generous dashes of bacon and caramelized onions. It’s then topped with fried hash browns and a runny egg. Hungover or not, it’s delish. Also, don’t pass up Sunday’s special cinnamon rolls, which take three days to prepare and are worth every minute of it.

QUEERLY DIGITAL LGBT cinema on DVD/Blu Ray, a monthly column

David-Elijah Nahmod

W

elcome to Queerly Digital, a regular column about LGBT cinema available for home viewing. This time we celebrate Halloween with a few scary titles available for your viewing pleasure.

“The Bride of Frankenstein” (1935)

In 1931, film director James Whale (1889–1957) terrified the world with his take on Mary Shelley’s classic tale “Frankenstein.” The film was actually a bit of a collaboration between the auteur and a then-unknown actor named Boris Karloff, who played Dr. Frankenstein’s tragic creation. Together they created a character who was a sympathetic man-child trapped in a monster’s body. The poor creature never understood why people were so afraid of him--some film historians have speculated that the monster was a metaphor for Whale’s life as a closeted gay man. In “Bride of Frankenstein,” Whale stepped out of the closet a bit. Audiences were introduced to Dr. Praetorius (Ernest Thesiger), with whom Dr. Frankenstein creates the Bride, a female monster. Dr. Praetorius was a screaming, effeminate queen who stared lovingly at his much younger pupil, and the stage-trained Thesiger played the role in all its giddy, limpwristed, lisping glory. Though the “word” was never said, it’s clear that Dr. Praetorius was a gay man. Though he’d now be seen as a negative stereotype, the character was, in 1935, a very daring persona to present on screen. Whale and Thesiger pulled it off beautifully. “The Bride of Frankenstein” is available as part of “Frankenstein: The Complete Legacy Collection,” newly out on Blu Ray. The collection also includes Whale’s original 1931 film--both films are also available on other DVD and Blu-Ray Discs.

“Voodoo Island” (1958) Another of horror-icon Boris Karloff’s many films. This low-budget romp is the type of B movie that was enormously popular during the 1950s and ’60s. Karloff plays Philip Knight, a best-selling author who’s investigating voodoo myths on a desolate tropical island in hopes of debunking those myths as foolish superstitions. His merry band includes Claire, played by a little-known actress named Jean Engstrom (1920–1997). Claire is a lesbian. She flirts openly with Knight’s female secretary and expresses her disdain for men. Her lesbianism is so obvious that one of the male characters refers to it--though the L-word was never said, the dialogue makes it clear who Claire is. She claims membership in a “private and exclusive club” where men aren’t welcome. Jean Engstrom’s acting career consisted primarily of guest roles on TV series. “Voodoo Island” was one of her very few theatrical releases. For having the courage to play a lesbian during the ultra-conservative 1950s, we remember and salute Jean Engstrom. “Voodoo Island” is available on DVD and can also be viewed in its entirety on YouTube.

"The Haunting" (1963)

This terrifying mood piece is a ghost story like no other. Robert Wise, an admitted fan of horror and science fiction, directed it in between his Oscar-winning musicals, “West Side Story” and “The Sound of Music.” “No one comes to Hill House during the night, in the dark,” says Mrs. Dudley (Rosalie Crutchley) the creepy housekeeper. Depressed and sexually repressed Eleanor (Julie Harris) is part of a small scientific research team investigating the alleged haunting of Hill House, a spooky old mansion. Theo (Claire Bloom), another member of the group, is a lesbian who’s clearly attracted to Eleanor. Eleanor has another suitor: the ghost of old Mr. Crane, who built Hill House 90 years earlier. The always-unloved, unhappy Eleanor suddenly finds herself at the center of a bizarre love triangle in this satisfyingly scary old-fashioned chiller. Bloom plays Theo with delightfully over-the-top panache. Unlike the independently produced, low-budget “Voodoo Island,” “The Haunting” is a big-budget, A-list studio production—which makes Theo possibly the first out-andproud character in a major studio film. “The Haunting” is available on DVD and Blu Ray. There are several other films with this same title--be sure you are getting Robert Wise’s 1963 masterpiece! BOO!

Information at ChristLutheranFL. com. Enter into a shadowy realm of mystery as three of the world’s greatest “Phantoms,” all veterans of the Broadway show, join a

chorus to share their own stories behind the mask in “the phAntoms... unmAsKed!” on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center, 2400 Civic Center Place in Miramar. The program will also include some of the most popular show tunes in Broadway history. Tickets start at $50 at MiramarCulturalCenter.org. Fans of the 1925 Lon Chaney silent movie “The Phantom of the Opera” can watch the film accompanied by organist timothy Brumfield, former organist of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at Trinity Cathedral, 464 NE 16th St. in Miami. Brumfield will improvise the musical accompaniment on the church’s 1926 Skinner organ. Tickets are $15 at TrinityMiami.org. A family package is also available. he old adage goes “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Television personality and celebrity chef Ina Garten will discuss her latest cookbook, “Cooking for Jeffery”—her tenth—during a special appearance at the Broward Center on Thursday, Nov. 3. “It takes two years to complete each book,” explained Garten in a telephone interview, “and each book follows a similar process.” First, Garten develops a list of dishes she wishes to include and then puts together the recipes. “I’m always changing that list, adding and taking [from] it,” she said in the same elegant and relaxed tone her dedicated viewers have come to know and trust. She will prepare each dish three, four, or even 25 times, until the outcome consistently matches her expectations. Garten then hands off the recipe to her assistant who then also follows the recipe. This process can take a week for each recipe. “She always comes up with questions I hadn’t considered,” added Garten. Then Garten will serve that dish for a dinner party. Over the years, Garten’s cookbooks have

focused on entertaining and become resources for avid hostesses and hosts. “It’s one thing to make a recipe, but another thing when you also have to worry about setting the table, making cocktails and all the other preparations for a party,” she said. Photography then takes another three to four weeks before Garten sits down with her editor to work on the text and then the designer for layout. “I’m involved in the selection of every font and color and photograph and how it looks on the page,” she said, not surprisingly. “I’m quite involved in every detail.” “Cooking for Jeffrey” is a culinary tribute to her husband of nearly 50 years and the book includes many stories about their romance and the dishes that have been special to them. While she notes that many of her recipes may evolve slightly, she eschews the many “foodie” trends championed by restaurants that come and ultimately go. “My taste hasn’t changed,” she said emphatically. “Maybe a recipe I made 18 years ago may need a tweak. Ingredients change, too, maybe for the better or the worse. Twenty years ago we didn’t have the beautiful heirloom

tomatoes we can buy today.” She remains an advocate of locally sourced ingredients, preferring to purchase vegetables from farmers’ markets and meats from local farms. “We’re definitely finding more good ingredients and farmers’ markets are popping up everywhere. My cooking style hasn’t changed over the past 40 years, but the ingredients certainly have.” Garten actually inherited the title, “The Barefoot Contessa,” the name of the gourmet shop and catering business she purchased in the Hamptons decades ago, but before embarking on a successful career in food, she actually worked as a budget analyst in the White House Office of Management and Budget during the Ford and Carter presidencies, where she worked on nuclear energy budget proposals and analysis. She doesn’t claim to be “political,” saying she left Washington because of politics. She avoided an opportunity to speak about the heated presidential election season, only saying, “I’m glad there are smart people like the Obamas.” Further, she worked on many $20- and $30 billion dollar programs and noticed “nothing changes.”

ina garten, food network’s “the Barefoot contessa,” pictured with husband Jeffrey, will appear at the Broward center next week. Submitted photo.

“I’ve found the food business much more satisfying,” she admitted. “Unlike government, it has changed.” Her fans—LGBT and straight alike—are glad. “Cooking for Jeffrey: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook,” Clarkson Potter Publishers, $35, is available on Amazon and other retailers. Ina Garten will appear at the Broward Center on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $39.50 at BrowardCenter.org.

Tucker Berardi

T

he Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium at Florida Atlantic University was filled with students Saturday night who came to sing with, dance with and throw money at a lineup of performers at this year’s Homecoming Drag Show. The sixth annual drag show was hosted by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and was emceed for the sixth time by the show’s consistent queen, Ariel Rimm. The night started with a performance of Beyonce’s song “Halo” by drag queen Anastasia, which had those in attendance clapping their hands and singing along. The crowd went wild when Rimm made her debut on stage, keeping the Beyonce streak by dancing to “Formation.” “Who’s ready to Draguate, bitches?” Ariel asked, making a play on words of “graduate.” Before every act, Rimm would come out in another outfit, drawing cheers — and some cash offerings — from the audience. “It takes a lot of time and a lot of money to look this cheap bitch, but I’m here for you,” Ariel said. “I’m going to make you scream, I’m going to make you question your sexuality, I’m going to make you call your mom and say … We got to talk.” Nothing was off limits for the performing queens — a Mean Girls-esque “Jingle Bell Rock” tribute that later turned into an

intense metal rock number and a soulful anthem performance of “Chandelier” by Sia. This gave way to a show of flips and butt-shaking to the same artist’s “Cheap Thrills,” as the song transition was made complete by a tear-away costume change. Those tear-away costumes were a big theme of the drag show. The trick outfits marked a transition from slow intros to upbeat dance numbers with skintight pieces that left close to nothing to the audience’s imagination. Valerie Dior changed from a flowing ball gown to a see-through dress with duct tape covering private parts. Another queen named Rubber Child tore out pages of the Bible and sprinkled them on stage before ripping her clothes off. None of the queens were shy in dealing with the crowd, as many would run into the audience and do flips in the aisles while collecting the handfuls of cash that were being offered. “I haven’t seen this much money being passed around since I was in church,” Twitter user @Mikaalala tweeted during the show. The majority of the show was fun and upbeat — but the second act changed tone to address the Pulse nightclub shooting. She teared up during her performance as audience members waved their cell phone flashlights to the music. She ended her tribute by addressing the tragedy to the crowd. “No one, no one, no one deserves to die for being gay,” she told the audience.

After the final performances, the show ended with a meet and greet with the queens. Many students and audience members crowded around the performers with compliments and, of course, more cash. “Go out there and make a difference in somebody’s life,” Rimm said to the crowd. “You never know whose life you will touch, if you will have just a small impact, or a big one.”

here are some topics—politics and religion, for example—that we are warned not to bring up in polite conversation. Comedian Sampson McCormick, on the other hand, promises to bring up politics, religion and all the other controversial topics most people avoid. Of his show, he said, “It’s funny. I talk about politics, religion, race and sexuality, all the things we don’t talk about it polite company. Especially now, nobody likes to talk about racism, but the fact is we do live in a country that is racist.” McCormick, 31, describes himself as pretty spontaneous, the product of the black church in which he was raised in North Carolina and later Washington, D.C. “If the spirit moves, you never know what will happen,” he promised. “Actually, I’m a city boy with country tendencies, or maybe a country boy with city tendencies, one of those.” He does believe race relations remain a flashpoint in American society. Those tensions are particularly stoked by the rise of social media, which allows people to remain anonymous while expressing hateful and hurtful thoughts. “When you’re a double minority (black and gay), you develop a different perspective about life and the world around you,” McCormick opined. McCormick’s opinions were formed in the inner city of Washington. “I grew up in the hood. We talked about each other’s mommas, how fat they were, how queer they were,” he recalled. “Today’s kids cry that you’re hurting their feelings. There are so many 12-year-olds on anti-depressants. Now kids don’t have the backbone.” As a child, McCormick coped with the

pressures, like many, by becoming the class clown. “I’ve definitely gotten more serious as I’ve gotten older. When I was younger, I spent a lot of time reading, a lot of time thinking and a lot of time high. When you put those things together, you definitely form opinions about the world,” he said in a telephone interview from an Amtrak train, traveling to a gig in Philadelphia. McCormick has been entertaining audiences professionally for more than 16 years and notes his road has not been easy as a male, gay comedian. “Everybody knows Wanda Sykes, Ellen, Rosie O’Donnell, Lily Tomlin. Now, let’s name some gay male comedians at the same time,” he pointed out. “We’ve been around, but I don’t want to say people take us seriously, but we have to work harder.” When pressed to name successful gay male comedians, effeminate, stereotypical personalities come to mind first. “I don’t walk around carrying a purse, wearing make-up and talking about fashion trends,” McCormick emphasized. “I’m drinking beer and talking about the game like the other guys. I don’t fit into that category and they’re baffled by that.” Much of this lack of visibility of gay men in the industry had been driven by executives concerned by the marketability of high-profile gay comedians. “America is ready for it,” McCormick stated confidently. And for audiences who may be concerned his show is “too” edgy, he dismissed them, instead describing his personality as “nice, chocolatey and sexy.” America—and South Florida—are ready.

Sampson McCormick appears at the Florida Comedy Club inside Spanx the Hog BBQ, 147 S. Cypress Creek Road in Pompano Beach, on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 8 and 10 p.m. Tickets are $20 and $40 at FloridaComedyClub.com.
