Mayor Pete Surges in Iowa But is it real and will it last?
Lisa Keen
Keen News Service
M
ainstream media have spent considerable space in recent days trying to reckon whether openly gay presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is “surging” to the top tier of the Democratic field or stalling in the second tier. On the anecdotal level, he has been successful enough to fire from top tier candidates. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, who has been clinging to third place, took a soft swipe. He criticized the mayor’s comment that he would like to see more justices like former U.S. Supreme Court Justices Anthony Kennedy and David Souter. Sanders said he would prefer more justices like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor. Buttigieg was also the target of an internal campaign leak: Someone made public a document that showed a focus group of African American voters in South Carolina showed Buttigieg’s being gay was a stumbling block in his hopes of winning over a sizeable number of African American voters. And a report emerged last week that Buttigieg’s campaign was getting help from controversial Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg. That came just as the media was turning up the heat on Zuckerberg for including the extreme right-wing news outlet Breitbart as a “trusted” news source on Facebook’s new news tab. Looking at data, Buttigieg continues to succeed in both polling and fundraising. In the latest two national polls to come out since the October debate, former Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren have split the lead. South Bend Mayor Buttigieg, the only openly gay candidate in the Democratic field, came in fourth each time.
In a Quinnipiac University poll of 713 voters who were Democrats or leaning toward Democratic candidates October 17-21, Warren garnered 28 percent of the support, followed by Biden with 21 percent, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders with 15 percent, and Buttigieg with 10 percent. (The poll’s margin of error was 4.6 points.) For Buttigieg, the result was a two-point improvement over a Quinnipiac poll just before the October 15 debate. In a CNN poll of 424 Democrats or Democratic-leaning adults nationwide October 17-20, 34 percent supported Biden, 19 percent Warren, 16 percent Sanders, and six percent each for Buttigieg and U.S. Senator Kamala Harris. (The margin of error was 5.8 points.) For Buttigieg, the result was unchanged since the CNN poll in early September. The CNN poll demonstrated something else: Despite his unprecedented success as a virtual unknown when he started his campaign, Buttigieg is still a relative unknown. The CNN poll found that 37 percent of 1,003 adults surveyed still “never heard of” Buttigieg. Twenty-eight percent had a “favorable” opinion of him, 23 percent had an “unfavorable” opinion of him, and 12 percent had no opinion. The 37 percent who said they “never heard of” Buttigieg was an enormous improvement compared to January, when 77 percent “never heard of” him. But it is still a significant hurdle when compared to Biden and Sanders (who only three percent said they “never heard of”) and Warren (with 13

percent “never heard of”). Even 28 percent of Democratic voters said they “never heard of” Buttigieg. Iowa Polls: Surge or Bullshit? Those are the national polls. In the first state that will conduct presidential party nomination voting, Buttigieg is in better shape. Buttigieg is polling third, even second, now in Iowa, the site of the first presidential nomination contest. An Iowa State University poll conducted October 1822 among 598 “likely Democratic Caucus attendees” showed Buttigieg in second, with 20 percent of the vote. He was behind only Warren, with 28 percent, and two points ahead of third place Sanders. In a poll conducted by USA Today and Suffolk University, 13 percent of 500 “likely Democratic caucusgoers” in Iowa said they would “vote for or lean toward” Buttigieg.
(The poll was conducted October 16-18 with a margin of error of 4.4 points.) The percentage itself is not impressive; he’s polled as high as 16 points this month. But what is worth noting is that his polling now puts him only four points behind U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (at 17 percent) and five points behind former Vice President Joe Biden (at 18 percent) in Iowa. He has consistently been 11 points behind the frontrunners since mid-September. Openly gay poll expert Nate Silver called the idea that Buttigieg is surging in Iowa “bullshit.” “It’s possible he’ll surge,” said Silver, “… But to say there’s been a big Buttigieg surge is so far from reality that, if you simply glance at a table of polls, it almost feels like gaslighting. He’s maybe gained a point or so in the national polls.” Silver said Buttigieg has advantages in Iowa and New Hampshire –both states have with largely white populations and Buttigieg’s home state

Trump Betrays LGBT Community Again
New rule will allow taxpayer-funded adoption agencies to discriminate As a candidate Trump once promised to be a ‘real friend’ to the LGBT community Chris Johnson
Washington Blade
T
he Trump administration is moving forward with a proposed regulation that will allow taxpayer-funded adoption agencies to refuse placement to LGBT families over religious objections.
The Department of Health & Human Services went public on Friday with the regulation, which will undo an Obamaera policy implemented in December 2016 prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity among federal grantees. The proposed regulation, which will have far-reaching implications, was immediately criticized by LGBT rights supporters. Julie Kruse, director of federal policy at Family Equality Council, said in a statement the policy was “outrageous,” especially at the start of National Adoption Month. “The American public overwhelmingly opposes allowing taxpayer-funded adoption and foster care agencies to turn away qualified parents simply because they are in a same-sex relationship,” Kruse said. Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, said in a statement the regulation would also allow anti-trans discrimination in health care. “This rule is an abuse of taxpayer dollars in the name of empowering hatred and bigotry towards society’s most vulnerable members,” Keisling said. “Stigma and prejudice are fueling a public health crisis among transgender people across the country, one that manifests itself as suicide, addiction, intimate partner violence and HIV. Enabling providers of life-saving services to worsen these crises by rejecting transgender people is a moral crime and a severe abdication of Photo via Adobe Stock.

HHS’s mission to preserve public health.” According to NCTE, the rule will allow anti-trans discrimination in HIV and STI prevention programs, opioid programs, youth homelessness services, health professional training, substance-use recovery programs and other life-saving services. The proposal seeks to gut an Obama-era rule that barred entities receiving money under federal contracts, including adoption agencies, from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation. As the new proposed rule notes, HHS has already granted an exemption from the Obama-era rule to South Carolina, which sought to get out of the regulation on behalf of the Miracle Hill Ministries adoption agency. The rule seeks to justify itself by saying the Obama-era regulations aren’t based on statutes and religious-affiliated groups have complained and filed lawsuits over meeting those requirements. These groups, HHS noted, assert the policy is unlawful under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the First Amendment. “The existence of these complaints and legal actions indicates [the Obama-era rule] imposed regulatory burden and created a lack of predictability and stability for the department and stakeholders with respect to these provisions’ viability and enforcement,” the rule says. reventing HIV in Florida is a cause that takes time and money. How much money? Almost half a million dollars, the U.S. says. Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez announced earlier this month that $490,000 in federal funding will go toward seven Florida counties, including Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. That money, from President Trump’s Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative, will go toward “planning and restructuring” the way South Florida can access prevention services, according to HIV Prevention and Education Director Lorenzo Lowe of Compass the LGBT center of the Palm Beaches. “For me, I think this is really exciting,” Lowe said. “This is a moment in which we have this fire that has been ignited and there’s this interest that is being created and we have the ball rolling and we’re getting a lot of attention. It’s important for South Florida — it truly is.” According to the Florida Department of Health, there were 4,906 new HIV diagnoses in 2018. “HIV is not a partisan issue, but a very problematic health concern that affects our communities greatly,” said Nuñez in a statement earlier this year. “With assistance from our federal partners at [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention], we are confident that the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative will reduce HIV transmission in our state … We must collectively continue to promote advocacy, research and progress
to pave the way for a healthier Florida.” Lowe said Compass and other prevention service providers in South Florida are still developing a plan detailing how to spend the money. He estimates that South Florida communities will start benefiting from the funding early next year. However, he added that some of the likely additional resources that will come out of it are PrEP, condom distribution and other treatment programs. Nunez also talked about the Florida Department of Health’s four-step initiative to eliminate HIV. The plan’s key components include: 1. Frequent HIV and STI testing in healthcare settings 2. Rapid access to medication and case management 3. Improving access to PrEP and nPEP
“We have to change the statistics. The statistics are drastic for our community.” - Lorenzo Lowe HIV Prevention and Education Director
4. Increase community awareness The other four Florida counties part of the funding are Orange, Duval, Hillsborough and Pinellas. On a federal level, the goal of the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative is to “reduce the number of number of new HIV infections in the United States by 75 percent within five years, and then by at least 90 percent within 10 years, for an estimated 250,000 total HIV infections averted,” according to HIV.gov.
One of Lowe’s goals is to raise awareness of some of the overlooked barriers that hinder people with HIV from receiving the care they need. Some of those changes should be fixing and removing some of those barriers like transportation, mental health and homelessness, Lowe argued. “We have to change the statistics. The statistics are drastic for our community. So we have to figure out what’s working because the way that we have been doing it isn’t working anymore,” Lowe said. “And the numbers and the data is showing that we have had some progress, but we definitely need to change and implement new programs.” A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study released last year that analyzed HIV diagnoses in 2016 showed that the Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach region had the highest rates of diagnoses in the country. West Palm Beach had recorded 23 diagnoses for every 100,000 people. Lowe said the $490,000 comes after Harold Phillips, chief executive officer of the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative, visited Miami to discuss what the White House can do to make a difference in South Florida. “We’re working on how to bridge gaps [between healthcare and the community] and there’s several different challenges,” Lowe said. “And it’s not an easy road, but this is actually … to help really identify some of the things we need to work on in our county.”

cuador has been for many years one of the world’s most amazing destinations for travelers from all over the globe. It’s beauty, history, culture and the Galapagos Islands have made Ecuador one of the top destinations in the planet. Ecuador is 1 of only 5 countries in the World whose constitution provides citizens equal rights regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity since 1998. Ecuador is also one of the few countries in the world to have banned conversion therapy. Under the 2016 Gender Identity Law, transgender people may change their legal gender solely based on selfdetermination, without undergoing surgery. As of July 2019, same-sex marriage is legal. Aside from its LGBTQ rights record, Ecuador is simply an uncomplicated choice for North American gay travelers for several reasons. For example, its capital -Quito- is less than 4 hours away from Fort Lauderdale (which is about the same as flying to Denver). No visa or vaccinations are required for Americans
and Canadians, and most Ecuadorians speak English. The official currency is the US Dollar, so there’s no need to worry about exchanging money or losing value. In fact, dollars go a long way in Ecuador -as much as 3 timesdue to the very low costs of labor, food, gas, transportation, rent, etc. For these reasons, and the fantastic yearround weather in Quito and other cities on The Andes, Ecuador has been recognized for many years as a top destination for retirement, and boasts a growing number of gay expats from North America. For the 7th year in a row, Quito has won the title of “Leader Destination in South America” in the World Travel Awards (i.e. the Oscars of tourism), and the Galapagos have been for decades one of the most coveted natural destinations in the planet. Prestigious publications like Lonely Planet, Condé Nast, Forbes and websites like TripAdvisor amongst many others, have recognized Ecuador’s unmatched beauty and potential.
Ecuador Gay Travel, LLC is the only all-gay tour operator with offices in both Ft. Lauderdale and Ecuador. The company offers premium travel experiences to and from Quito, the Galapagos Islands and Fort Lauderdale, with all-inclusive tours and itineraries designed for and by gay men. Its binational team has a combined experience of 35 years in the tourism industry in Ecuador and Florida. To plan your trip, visit www.EcuadorGayTravel.com

am taking this opportunity to invite one and all to worship at Christ Lutheran Church. Worship is at the center of what we do and who we are as Church. When we gather together around God’s Word and our Lord’s precious Sacrament we grow as a community that has been called to gather and go forth into the world in love and service, having ourselves been changed by the experience of prayer and praise to the One who bids us to Come. We welcome all people, both members and visitors alike, to set aside this time every Sunday morning to come together as a family in Christ. The mission and ministry of Christ Lutheran Church is an outgrowth
of our time worshipping our Lord and Savior who calls us to so gather and then to go forth in love and service to all. As we proclaim in our Mission Statement: “Our Mission is to Grow in Faith, Serve Those in Need and Draw All People to Christ.” Christ Lutheran Church is your fellowship of the faithful. We gather for worship every Sunday at 10:00 AM, followed by a delicious fellowship, an engaging Bible Study and Confirmation Class for our young people. We hope and pray that all who read this will receive the blessings of our Lord and will take the opportunity to gather at Christ Lutheran Church. COME, LET US GATHER TOGETHER!!!

Hope for a New Tomorrow SFGN endorses Mayor Pete for President

T
he newspaper you hold in your hand has spent the past ten years and 500 issues illuminating LGBT lives, advocating for the causes we find in common, standing up for the rights we hold so dear. We do so again today. One year from today, on the first Tuesday in November of 2020, America will get to choose its next president of the U.S. We endorse the candidacy of Pete Buttigieg. We do not do this simply because Mayor Pete is a gay man and this is a gay paper. We do this because he is a good man seeking to do great things. Of course he will have the best interests of the LGBT community in his heart, but he has the spirit of America in his soul. Pete Buttigieg is the polar opposite of Donald Trump. He is educated and articulate, reasonable and responsible, committed and conscientious. To the table, he brings class, not crass; dignity, not disgrace. He is an advocate, not an ass. Donald Trump’s tenure in the White House threatens our nation daily. His personality is toxic, his patriotism suspect, his politics racist, and his positions on social issues neanderthal. His presence in the White House corrupts the soul of our nation. From the LGBT community’s standpoint, Donald Trump’s tenure has already compromised social freedoms the LGBT community has won over the last two decades. He threatens to do even worse going forward. The President is turning back time to an America less diverse, less inclusive, less just. Our country needs a leader who will bring Americans together, not tear us apart. The field of Democratic candidates has a host of such aspirants, each with strengths, all
with flaws. No one candidate in an America of 300 million souls will ever be the ‘perfect’ candidate; all things to all people. Remember perfect will always be the enemy of good. This year, however, Mayor Pete does stand out as the most inspirational and aspirational one. The Mayor of South Bend is asking our citizens, from shore to shore, to believe in hope, not hate. He is asking us to embrace our individuality, not erase it. He appeals to our better angels, not our worst fears. Pete Buttigieg is a name no one knew or could pronounce a year ago. He is the mayor of a small town in a conservative state. But America is getting to know him. They are finding an honest man with a unifying voice; a man who addresses problems instead of creating them. Mayor Pete will build bridges, not walls. Pete Buttigieg is a young man with modern ideas, instead of an old one with bone spurs in his brain. He is a Rhodes scholar who speaks in eight languages instead of in four letter words. He is a soldier who was firing guns at terrorists while Donald Trump was firing Omarosa on a reality TV show. Pete Buttigieg is authentic, genuine, and real. He has turned adversity into strength and challenge into character. Our country deserves a citizen with courage and a conscience at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Our newspaper understands that not all gays and lesbians speak with one voice. We represent a range of personalities and politics. A rainbow is a bouquet of many colors. Pete Buttigieg, however, is a candidate who will represent them all. SFGN celebrates as well the candidacies of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and Corey Booker. Indeed, any of the Democratic candidates for the

presidency would do a better job than the man renting the space now. All will represent our interests honorably and capably. Today, however, we come down on the side of Mayor Pete. He has made us proud, and will make our country stronger. He is one of us who speaks for all of us. He is proof for all of us there is no bridge too far; that we are only limited by the boundaries of our imagination. Let us not coronate next November a corrupt king. Let us pass the torch to a new generation of Americans, multi-cultural and diverse, inclusive and rich with life, visionary with grace, and mindful of the tomorrow future generations face.
Can the LGBT community help win the World Series of politics in 2020? This is a century which began first with the Boston Red Sox winning it in 2004, the Chicago Cubs in 2015, and now the Washington Nationals in 2019. Each team waited nearly a hundred years, or even more. It can happen to us too. Everything cometh to he who waiteth so long as he who waiteth worketh like hell whilst he waiteth. If a man stands by his convictions, and there abides, eventually the whole world will come around to him. Maybe it’s our turn. Why not?

If the application pertains to a leisure services facility, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board can review the application and make a recommendation to the City Commission. If the application is for a public street, property owners who live within 300 feet of the street or who live on the street must be notified by mail of the date of the City Commission meeting when the item will be discussed. Public input will be sought through no
less than two City Commission meetings. Notification will be made through the city’s weekly email blast, the city’s monthly newsletter and social media. The renaming will be confirmed by City resolution. The city shall have final approval and absolute discretion to approve or deny any request for any reason. In April, Commissioner Paul Rolli spoke against the street naming saying, “City property belongs to all the inhabitants of the city. It doesn’t belong to a couple of people. I think the first thing we do is create a process.” “When it first came up, my recommendation was that we develop a policy for naming of all public property. I wanted the process to be transparent,” Rolli said. WMG

By Sal Torre Wicked Manors 2019. Photo credit: J.R. Davis.
This year’s theme for Wicked Manors, the Seven Deadly Sins, offered many options to write about this week. Unfortunately, in our world today one does not have to look far to find many who openly flaunt the sins of greed, lust, gluttony, sloth, wrath, envy and pride as if a badge of honor. Our President alone is guilty of all seven and tweets daily of such sinful behavior. However, who am I to judge the actions of others, being just a sinner myself. That, in itself, is viewed as sinful behavior. “Judge not, yet ye be judged.” Here in our Island City we choose to celebrate All Hollow’s Eve each year with a night of merriment, fun, costume wearing, frolicking and perhaps indulging in a few of those seven sins. Afterwards, once we finish with all the debauchery and celebrations, perhaps we should spend some time contemplating the opposite side of these sinful behaviors, known as the contrary virtues. As the world around us becomes more and more polarized each day, perhaps we all need a little practice in humility, charity, kindness, patience, chastity, temperance and diligence. Now don’t get your knickers all twisted with the notions of chastity and temperance. I am not suggesting giving up happy hour or becoming celibate, so don’t delete that online dating app just yet. The virtue of chastity can refer to the purity of one’s conduct and intentions, so one can be chaste by striving for better health through good personal hygiene and practicing safe sex. Temperance is defined as moderation not abstinence, so go ahead and have that cocktail, but perhaps refrain from using too many of those drink tokens after you have had a few. As for the other five virtues; humility, kindness, charity, patience and diligence, they should not be too hard to work into our daily routine. Well, humility might be a problem for some. Yes, you know who you are.

Getting back to the subject of sinful behavior, I cannot stop thinking about Joe Biden’s past support for credit card companies and banking interests after watching the new Meryl Streep movie, “The Laundromat.” While serving as Senator from Delaware, Biden took very good care of monied interests who used Delaware as a tax haven and other lucrative reasons. Perhaps such a history might be the reason his campaign is failing to arouse strong grass roots support. Democratic Party leadership might want to start listening to the workingclass Americans they sold out with NAFTA, lucrative banking and usury laws, and by courting big business over union membership. Middle-class dreams evaporated over the last twenty years while the wealth of just one percent ballooned to new heights. Younger Americans are demanding answers, but those answers are not going to come from Joe Biden. Another sell-out being perpetuated is the notion of recycling and the continued use of single-use plastics. Some cities here in Broward County are making moves in the right direction by banning the use of plastic straws, but so much more needs to be done. We need to look at all single-use plastics,

like cups, take-out containers, grocery bags and individual water bottles if we are going to make any real difference in our environment. With all the kickback over something so miniscule as a plastic straw, the plastic industry has nothing to worry about anytime in the near future. Another item we don’t need to worry about here in our Island City are those Spanish Fascist Blackshirts rumored to be bullying some members of our community at City Commission meetings. Although a unified group of individuals wearing black shirts were present and vocal at our last city commission meeting, I was told by a reliable source that the choice of color had nothing to do with goose-stepping gestapo tactics, but rather for the slimming effects of black clothing. The group was united in their support for the Urban Form Study recently submitted to the city. This study advocates increasing density in appropriate areas of our city, tiering height requirements, changes in parking requirements and many other recommendations to steer our city ahead to the future. Enough rambling already, let me get busy carving my pumpkin so I can have that jacko-lantern gleaming with candlelight by my front door. This way I will not have to worry about any evil spirits that might be roaming the neighborhood when I head out to enjoy the autumn festivities along Wilton Drive. Merriment like Wicked Manors make life just better here. WMG

Wilton’s Third Quarter – What’s New?
Real Estate
By James Oaksun These next two columns will be shorter on the text, but hopefully chock full of information to make you a better consumer. Whether you wish to buy or sell in Our Fair Island City, or simply wish to impress those know-it-all guys from DC or Boston, you will find the knowledge helpful. There are storm clouds around the national real estate market. Just last weekend I read a column titled “The U.S. Housing Crash is Officially Here.” The article picked a couple data points and overgeneralized, in my opinion. However, I have been warning about how the super-strength of our local market will not continue forever. Considering WilMa as a whole, the median sale price of a single family home in the third quarter was $485,500. This is a seven-percent increase compared with 3Q18, and a sixpercent gain compared with the third quarter of 2017. However, it is important to note that the median price did decline four percent versus 2Q19. The graph shows the trend in median price back to 1Q17. I have also included the prices at the 25th and 75th
So, prices have been trending up, but at a reduced rate. The drop from 2Q19 is troublesome, and merits attention.
percentiles – what more geekish-oriented people call the “interquartile range”. So when one of the DC know-it-alls starts pontificating about local real estate, just say “the current interquartile range is 350 to 600 for single family.” Then make them buy you a beverage. So, prices have been trending up, but at a reduced rate. The drop from 2Q19 is troublesome, and merits attention. The attached text chart breaks down the three neighborhoods in the Island City – West being all west of Andrews, Center being Andrews to the train tracks, and East being train tracks to Federal. Here I make a six-month calculation due to fewer data points. As in prior quarters, pricing is at a premium in East Wilton, with the other neighborhoods more “affordable.” I’ll point out three things here. First, the overall city decline compared with 2Q19 was due to decreases in Center and East Wilton; median prices in West Wilton increased. Second, the seven-percent increase versus 3Q18 was driven by Center Wilton, as the other two neighborhoods had just minor gains. Finally, the two-year change was entirely due to East Wilton. West Wilton had no change in prices, while Center Wilton had a small decline. Tune in next time for a sales and inventory check. Density Study Lays Out Future Planning By Justin Flippen

Document. Remember. Empower. HIV is Still here. Broward County is #1 in new HIV cases #itsnotoveryet
I believe one of the best ways forward to maintain funding for our city’s level and quality of services and alleviate the burden on current property owners is to expand the tax roll through carefully increased density along our commercial and transit oriented corridors with redevelopments that conform to our city’s scale and small town sensibility. The year to come should bring progress in this area by us all working together. In late October, the city’s consultant, Calvin Giordano, provided a presentation to the City Commission on the draft Urban Form and Density study, which offered results of their research and public outreach on the future of our urban form and density in Wilton Manors. The full presentation can be found online. This process has been specifically designed to provide the public with opportunities to weigh in and share their thoughts and support as to what kind of form new and future growth should look like in Wilton Manors and where in the city that growth should
be limited. I have been encouraged, as the public has confirmed the position I have shared and will continue to take on their behalf in that preservation of our single-family neighborhoods is a priority and that the growth we seek to develop should be limited to our aging commercial and transit oriented corridors. The City Commission will accept the full report later this year, and Calvin Giordano will begin to build the regulations that will provide developers with the vision and tools to redevelop our aging commercial infrastructure.

Thirteen Years Serving the CommUNITY Nikki (ID 616031) and Sophie (ID 616032) are seven years young and adore people of all ages. The caramel colored beauties enjoy belly rubs and playing in a fenced in back yard. They are potty-trained, like toys and have hearts of gold. They will do best in a home without felines. This pair are very sad that they are back at the shelter after their previous adopter became ill. While they are getting lots of TLC from the staff and volunteers, what they really want is a family to call their own. Can you give them the loving home they so desperately want?
The adoption fee for dogs over 6 months is $100 and felines over 6 months are $30. When you adopt from the Humane Society of Broward County the dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped, receive preliminary vaccinations, cats are feline leukemia tested, and dogs over 7 months are tested for heartworm. The Flamingo Auto Group South (FAGS) is an inclusive auto group with a low barrier to entry.
You don’t need to be a car collector, own any vintage cars, or even a car in general to join this group — you just need to have a passion for cars. “The group got started as a way for gay car enthusiasts in the area to have a venue for car shows and social functions with likeminded guys in a gay environment, free from any possible homophobia one might run into at a straight car show or event, said Adam Walder, who has been president of the group since 2009. FAGS is coming up on its 20th anniversary, which it will celebrate with a dinner in June 2020. The group is a regional chapter of the larger Lambda Car Club International, an extensive network of gay and lesbian car enthusiasts with a history spanning nearly

four decades, with the original group, the Gay Old Car Owners Society, being founded in 1981. The creation of the Flamingo Auto Group was somewhat in response to the reactions of mainstream auto clubs, which historically have not been welcoming to the LGBT community. Many of the Flamingo Auto Group’s members also participate in mainstream groups however, and the group participates in larger car shows that are not specific to LGBT membership. “The auto club landscape has definitely become more friendly to gays and lesbians over the past decade, Walder said. “Most all of our members are also members of other clubs. According to Walder there are currently nearly 60 members and get around 25 to 30 attendees at their car shows. In the group’s history they have only ever had one female member, but Walder notes that the group has done a number of shows with lesbian groups and that FAGS is always open to women as much as it is to men. “We are always looking for new members x and are especially interested in younger members and what they may be able to bring to the table, Walder said. Alongside newer members, the Flamingo Auto Group will soon be getting new leadership. Walder is looking to retire from his position at the next election and pave the way for new leadership to take the wheel. The group is always accepting membership on their Facebook page, Flamingo Auto Group South, where they share updates on events, shows, and other club activities.

here does multi-talented choreographer/singer/actor and part-time ”RuPaul’s Drag Race” judge Todrick Hall find all his energy? “I just have to accept the fact that I’m not a normal person,” he said, just a couple of hours after hopping off a red eye flight to Fort Lauderdale earlier this summer. “I don’t need a lot of downtime…it’s not fun to lay out at the beach or at a park.” Instead, he’s constantly thinking about that next performance. “I’m inspired by everyday things. I could be driving down the street and see a line on a billboard and one of the lines on the billboard could inspire a song or the title of an album. I love going to New York City to see a Broadway show, a live orchestra perform or a concert. That’s what I do in my free time,” Hall explained. When he does find time to relax, Hall circled back: “I love a movie or a TV show, but nothing beats seeing a cirque show, Broadway, a performance of the “Nutcracker” ballet….I love to smell the remnants of the fog machine four rows back from the orchestra.” Friends and colleagues alike credit the performer’s tireless work ethic. “He’s genuine, fun, funny, but hardworking, very focused,” said Watkins, Hall’s companion for this trip. The artist’s singular focus on his art doesn’t mean he doesn’t appreciate visits
to South Florida…and his fans here. He’s looking forward to returning to the Broward Center next weekend with his “Haus Party” tour. “Even though I travel so much, I don’t often get to see the sights,” Hall admitted, “but I always feel loved when I’m here.” One of his first jobs was at Disney World and Hall came out while living in Florida. He’s sold out the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater but will be finally performing in the 2600-seat Au-Rene Theater. “I remember thinking I will sell this theater out some day and now I can’t wait for it to be filled with my fabulous fans,” said Hall. He plans to treat those fans to favorites from his last three albums, “Straight Outta Oz,” “Forbidden” and “Haus Party, Pt. 1,” and he promises more dancing. “I want to dance a lot more. I really want to challenge myself choreography-wise,” Hall added. He’s always pushing himself, and for good reason, the 34-year-old YouTuber acknowledged that, in the age of social media, aspiring young performers have the ability to “put themselves out there…without asking permission.” “The downfall is that anybody can become famous these days, you don’t have to have talent,” Hall pointed out. Fortunately, the talent part has never been a problem for him.
Todrick Hall’s “Haus Party” tour comes to the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $27.50 at BrowardCenter.org.

Queerly Digital LGBT cinema on DVD/Blu-Ray, a monthly column David-Elijah Nahmod
To A More Perfect Union Welcome to Queerly Digital, a regular column about LGBT cinema on DVD and Blu Ray.
N
ewly out on DVD, Donna Zaccaro’s documentary “To a More Perfect Union: US V. Windsor” is a short (63 minutes), succinct documentary on the legal battle fought by Edie Windsor, a lesbian in her 80s who refused to let the US government invalidate her relationship. Windsor and Thea Spyer (the couple married in Canada) were together for forty years. When Spyer died after a long illness, Windsor was hit with an estate tax bill totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. It’s a bill she would not have had to pay were her marriage recognized by the federal government. She decided to sue. Zaccaro assumes, perhaps correctly, that many younger viewers might not know the history of the gay rights movement in the U.S., and so she opens her film with a brief look back at how LGBT people were treated and viewed by society during the 1950s and 60s--police raids of gay bars had been the norm. A cringe inducing clip from a 1967 CBS news special called The Homosexuals reminds viewers how negatively society viewed LGBT people during those years. Zaccaro also recalls the formation of The Mattachine Society, an organization of gay men, and the Daughters of Bilitis, a San Francisco based lesbian group, which were the first gay organizations in the U.S. LGBT people finally fought back in 1969 when the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York--the riots which ensued birthed the modern gay rights movement and launched the first Pride parades. It’s a lot of information, and Zaccaro impressively packs it all into the film’s first ten minutes. The film also recounts the history of DOMA, the Defense Of Marriage Act, which was passed
by Congress and signed into law by President Bill Clinton when it looked like Hawaii was going to pass the country’s first marriage equality bill-lawmakers were afraid that other states would be forced to honor Hawaiian marriages. Windsor’s suit challenged part of that law and demanded full recognition of her marriage to Spyer. The bulk of the film focuses on Windsor’s relationship with Spyer, and Windsor’s subsequent legal battle. Interviewees include Windsor herself, and Roberta Kaplan, Windsor’s attorney, who wisely avoids using complicated legal jargon in her interviews which makes the film, and the details of the case, easily accessible to the average viewer. Viewers will learn exactly what Windsor had to go through in order to get her case heard in the U.S. Supreme Court, no mean feat, made all the more impressive because of her advanced age and the fact that she was suffering from health problems at the time. But she persevered, and her case indeed made it to the high court, attracting national attention along the way. And though the outcome of the case is well known (Windsor won) the section of the film which includes Kaplan’s oral arguments before the court and arguments from the opposing side play out like a well done suspense drama. Ultimately, Windsor not only won her case, she paved the way for the establishment of full marriage equality rights in the U.S. two years later. Now that she is no longer with us, “To A More Perfect Union” stands as a tribute to her strength, and to her extraordinary accomplishment. The film paints a portrait of her as a hero, rightfully so. Windsor deserves to be remembered. “To A More Perfect Union” is a lovely remembrance of her.
