he Florida Press Club recently announced the winners to its annual Florida Press Club Excellence in Journalism Contest. This year SFGN won five awards including two first place wins. Executive Editor Jason Parsley won three of the awards, which include first place in General Writing and Minority Reporting as well as a second place win in the Lucy Morgan Award for in-depth reporting. Parsley’s winning body of work includes his in-depth expose “Abuse of Power,” which details the allegations of sexual misconduct by a local philanthropist and documentarian during his time as a prep school head master; the sex predator scandal at the Pride Center; the collapse of the OutGames in Miami; and Parsley’s breaking news coverage of the gay bashing that took place in Miami after Gay Pride. SFGN’s Art Director, Brendon Lies, took second place in Artist Illustration. Lastly, SFGN took third place in the Special Section category for its coverage of the one year commemoration of the Pulse massacre, which included stories from freelancers Denise Royal and Michael d’Oliveira. “These awards show SFGN’s commitment to journalism. Congratulation to all of the winners,” said SFGN Publisher Norm Kent. “In this era of fake news it’s important that we continue to celebrate and honor real news. We are a small community newspaper with limited resources so we are always especially proud when our work is recognized by our peers.” Last year SFGN also won five awards in the competition including a first place win for Illustration by Lies; second place for Minority Reporting by Christiana Lilly; and third place for Community News writing by Dori Zinn.

Tanzania launches witch hunt to arrest gay people
Brazilian activists rally after anti-gay president is elected
Tanzania’s largest city, Dar es Salaam, is starting an anti-gay surveillance squad to crack-down on homosexuality, which is illegal. Paul Makonda, the regional commissioner of Dar es Salaam, is ordering citizens to report gay individuals to the squad via a phone hotline. They started arresting people Monday. In Tanzania, homosexual acts are punishable by up to 30 years in prison, according to NPR. “As we take this stand, do not tell us about human rights,” Makonda said. “There is no right to go against creation written on any religious books. Keep your laws. Being gay is not allowed here in Dar es Salaam.” Makonda said in a tweet that 100

Hundreds of thousands attend Taipei Pride march Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, saw hundreds of thousands marching for equality on Saturday. Last May, Taiwan legalized samesex marriage. Almost a year and a half later, a series of votes on gay marriage will open to the public on Nov. 24. They revive the debate on whether same-sex unions should warrant a separate law, but some people say this is discrimination. The attendees of the Pride march gathered near the President’s Office to protest the separate law, according to Reuters. They held signs that said “vote for your happy future,” and chanted “defeat discrimination,” Reuters reported. President Tsai Ing-wen ran on the platform to legalize gay marriage, but
Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s recentlyelected right-wing president, is openly anti-gay. But that isn’t stopping activists from campaigning against him. Marielle Franco, a prominent black, LGBT activist, was shot in Rio de Janeiro in March. Months later, Bolsonaro was elected, and hatred has filtered throughout Brazil, her sister Anielle Franco said, according to AFP. “Since Sunday we have had so many cases of violence — people who are screaming at each other in the face, hitting people,” the 34-year-old told AFP. Franco said activists, like her sister, wouldn’t hide from Bolsonaro. “LGBT organizations are not going to hide,” she said. “They are going to go to the fight and the frontline and say, ‘we exist.’”

Transgender man kicked out of gay sauna for not having a penis A transgender man and a friend attended a gay bath house called Sailors Sauna in east London. Another customer notified the staff that a “woman was using the venue,” according to the Telegraph. The staff then asked him to leave, the man said, “because of my genitals.” Sailors Sauna then issued a statement, addressing criticism on their decision to ask him to leave. “I understand that the gentleman was male, however his physical gender was different and as a customer had already stated that a female was using the venue, I explained that I would need to clarify with the council,” they said. After clarifying with the council they’re licensed under, the staff

Come and ‘Taste’ History at Stonewall Museum Sophie Siegel
M
onique Force-Setlock, the Director of Development for the Stonewall National Museum of Archives, knows there is a need to preserve history, especially in this current social climate. One way Stonewall is honoring history is giving a “taste” to those in the community. The event is called “A Taste of History,” and it’s happening Nov. 15, but was originally planned on Oct. 11 to honor “National Coming Out Day.” Force-Setlock said the museum wanted to hold a “fun event where we give everybody a taste of history, so to speak.” She added this event is a food-themed event to help bring the community together. “It’s very important because especially at this time, the challenges that we are facing in this country, there’s an even greater need to share and preserve history and we felt that this event was a great event to do that,” Force-Setlock said. The museum partnered with local businesses to help “celebrate the strides” the LGBT community has accomplished by creating a fun, food-themed and community uniting event. “Here at the museum, we are about celebrating history,” Force-Setlock said. Some of the food vendors that will be at the event include What the Pho?, New York Grilled Cheese, Pink Sub, Sidecar Kitchen, and Kilwins.
Sponsors for the event include the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and realtor Julio Rodriguez of Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate in Fort Lauderdale. The Historic Stranahan Museum is also a sponsor. The funds raised from the event will go towards the “Stonewall National Education Project.” This project holds symposiums every year to educate LGBT youth. In 2019, they plan to hold it at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. “We bring together educators, and people from all over the country and they come together for the 3-day symposium, talk about how to keep our kids safe in schools, [and] how to support LGBTQ youth, Force-Setlock said. Monique Force-Setlock.
Tickets for the event cost $50 in advance and $60 the day of. The event takes place at The Historic Stranahan Museum, 335 SE 6th Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Parking is at the Riverside Hotel garage, with costs of $3 for the first hour and $1 per additional hour. And if someone meets their first bisexual friend through that story, in terms of loving the characters, that would be incredible,” Akhavan told The Hollywood Reporter. Akhavan also said she wants to bring light to the fact that bisexual people are outsiders in the gay and straight communities, some themes in her life as a bisexual individual.

Intersex official elected in Alaska Kathy Ottersten made history in October when she was elected to the Fairbanks City Council. Ottersten, 52, was transitioning in her 20s when she discovered she was intersex. The doctors had performed genital surgery, telling her parents they had to remove extra skin. Ottersten’s parents had no idea she was intersex. Alaska, a conservative state, also elected a trans woman, but the local media barely picked up either occurrence. Ottersten told Into it’s because women in Alaska don’t generally try to present feminine. “You’re too busy hauling your own water because you live in a dry cabin or out dealing with the mushing dogs,” Ottersten said. Women’s shelter sues for right to turn away transgender women
Photo via Facebook.
A women’s shelter in Anchorage, Alaska is suing the city for requiring them to admit transgender individuals. They say it goes against their religion. The Hope Center shelter and the Lawyers for Alliance Defending Freedom are filing a suit against the city of Anchorage to stop them from applying their gender identity law to the shelter, according to KTOO. The Christian law firm says homeless shelters are exempt from local law, but they
use the gender identity law to “investigate, harass, and pressure” the Hope Center. They filed the lawsuit in August, months after a transgender woman complained she was denied access to the shelter. “The injunction would mean that Anchorage can’t apply the ordinance to the Hope Center in order to force the Hope Center to allow men to come in the shelter and sleep and undress alongside these vulnerable homeless women,” Denise Harle, an attorney with the alliance.

SFGN interviewed McClellan in 2012. Below is an excerpt from that Q&A. How has your life changed since The Voice? Well, I could only dream about opening for B.B. King beforehand and now I can actually do it and there’s the difference. I could only dream about signing with Christina Aguilera and now I’ve done that thanks to The Voice. My life has done a 180 [degree] turn. Did you ever think you’d be singing with Christina Aguilera? No way, no way. But what a gift from the universe it’s been, you know. How was she as a mentor? Beautiful. Awesome… the best voice hands down besides my long, long idol Ms. Etta James who recently made her way to heaven. But we [Christina and I] shared that in common. She loves Etta too. What did you learn from The Voice? Staying true to myself was the right decision. That’s what I learned from The Voice. They didn’t teach me how to sing. I went in knowing how. They gave me a chance and opportunity to show it to the world. I could have folded and tried to have been somebody else but I didn’t. I’ve been too long being me and that’s OK. I figured I’d rather do me and go home fast and laugh about it. At least I did me. The world voted me in twice. Not once. Twice. That’s a big accomplishment right there. Just [being] a gay female in today’s society. So what did you think of the whole reality show gig? There is a lot to be said for reality TV. That was some real shit right there.
So it wasn’t fake? No way. Me holding Frenchie Davis’ hand crying right there. That was real. So it was a real emotional journey? Oh yeah. But it’s been the best thing that could have ever happened for my career. Were you surprised the show was so gay friendly? I didn’t go into it thinking about that way one way or the other because I just… I just live out loud. I think everybody should. I have personally have never hid [sic] myself ever, even with a very thick Christian background. Southern Baptist to be exact. You can’t hide yourself, nobody does you better than you. If you do you’ll end up with depression and all of these other things that you can eliminate just by being yourself. If [the show] didn’t accept me then that’s too bad, but they did. Which is great. Great for all of us. There were a few family members there and that was great. What made you pick Christina Aguilera over Adam Levine? Are you serious? Are you seriously asking me that question? Hands down she has more of an involvement in the gay community and her voice is flawless. She’s like lipstick on fire. I love Adam don’t get me wrong. He’s an impeccable musician as well. What she stood for, though, strapped me a little harder. Plus it’s Christina Aguilera, are you kidding me? Honey, I was on a diva team that’s all I knew when she turned around. I really didn’t think she would turn around for me though. I don’t know who I thought would. When she turned around I was like ‘alrighty then.’ It’s on now.

Adam, though, did make some comments during the show about The Voice featuring LGBT contestants? Absolutely. Well I spent some time with Adam. Hands down he’s a man of his word and he’s a true talent as much as he is a good person. I couldn’t have gone wrong either way. I would have been OK. It was very fun being on Christina Aguilera’s team. It was excellent getting to know the rest of the coaches as well, as who they are, not who the people we see them [as] in the magazines. It’s just another blessing from the universe. What’s been the biggest moment since the show ended? When I found out I was opening for B.B. King that’s one of the biggest moments in my career to date. And having Etta James’ band on my CD. Her band played on Fear Nothing. She is my idol, absolutely.
today. I’ll take that. There is some serious strong women that have formed my opinion of music and this is what I’m out there living and doing. Hopefully people like it and so far they do. That’s cool in my opinion. Can you tell us about your coming out process? I came out forever ago when I was a kid. As young as middle school. The same as it is right now. I dealt with the whole parents thing like anybody else would. I have never let anybody tell me one-way, or the other, how I should or shouldn’t be, whether it’s my family members or what not. I’ve been a strong little bitch all of my life. That’s the truth.
“There is some serious strong women that have formed my opinion of music and this is what I’m out there living and doing.”

omen Crossing the Line: A Performance Festival is billed as a day-long festival to celebrate women creators breaking down the barriers of gender, while crossing cultural barriers.
The cutting-edge performances promise to challenge the imagination and increase the understanding of both arts and the world. The event takes place Nov. 17 at the Broward County Library. Attendees can expect storytelling through visual theater from musicians, dancers, and performers from different genres. This performance festival will offer the audience both seriousness and whimsy; wisdom and wonder. “We wanted to see something happen that’s a celebration of the power and creativity of women in this time,” said Jean Minuchin, Director of World and Eye Arts Center. “With what’s been happening in the world at this time, we wanted to do something positive through the arts.” Minuchin is also among the performers. “I am a performance artist who works with puppetry, video, and storytelling,” she said. “I tell short parables about the world as I see
it and some of the struggles that we’re having with greed and the destruction on the planet. I tell them through little fables.” Poet Marie Whitman is also part of the show. She is a performance artist who combines words with movement. “These are contentious times,” Whitman said. “Socially, politically, universally and personally, things have felt heightened, urgent, pressing. As both a performer and co-producer of this performance festival, I wanted to channel my energy, frustration, fear and faith into acts of creation. As of late we have seen women speaking forth, crossing lines, lines that were perhaps drawn for them by someone else. One of the bravest things we can do right now as women is to keep our hearts open and keep creating. Gathering powerful, professional, potent women artists to offer inspiring work to the community, is a sacred, communal and transformational act - for the audience and the artists!”

Health Medical Marijuana Certifications clinic in Plantation has simplified the process of obtaining your state issued medical use card. Open since June, the clinic is housed in a professional office setting and most patients complete their office visit in under an hour. Clinic administrator Angie Maione says that the goal at 4Health is to make the process as simple and smooth as possible. “Our patients are typically suffering with ailments like including chronic pain, cancer, severe anxiety, depression and a host of other chronic conditions. The last thing we want to do is provide barriers for obtaining a medical marijuana use card.”

4Health is providing a different experience for patients. Many clinics are housed in strip malls with what Maione calls a “Turn them and burn them mentality.” She warns the many clinics are taking advantage of patients and providing misinformation about how often they need to see a physician and ultimately costing patients more. All certifying physicians at 4health have left their medical practices to focus solely on helping medical marijuana patients. According to Maione, “We are not a side business for a physician, we only work with doctors who are committed to natural methods of healing and believe in the medicinal properties of medical marijuana.”
If you’d like to join the many people who are reducing the number of toxic pharmaceuticals they take, medical marijuana may be right for you. New patients can call the office at 754-529-HERB (4372) to set up an appointment to meet with a certifying physician and get entered into the state’s system. 11.7.2018 •

oters on Tuesday elected the city’s first all LGBT commission, choosing Justin Flippen as mayor in a landslide victory, as well as veteran politician Gary Resnick and city activist Paul Rolli as its two new commissioners.
Longtime city commissioner Scott Newton, 60, who served as mayor from 2004-2008 and commissioner from 20002004 and 2010 to present, was voted out. Newton, the only straight member of the commission, ran on a platform of experience. Also defeated was Katharine “Kat” Campbell, 43, a licensed clinical social worker and mother. Resnick said being part of an all gay city commission is significant. The victory marked his 10th in the city, over the years. “When you look at where we have come from, it’s not that long ago when we weren’t even allowed to get married or have kids,” Resnick noted. “In a relatively short amount
of time, we are now accepted as people’s city officials.” He expects the transition from mayor to commission to be smooth. “I just look forward to continuing to do what I can to help the city,” Resnick said. “I think it will be fine. When I was mayor I always treated everybody equally and I hope that will continue and look forward to continuing to work.” Rolli, who ran a far-reaching grassroots campaign, knocked on doors and showed up at events and venues all over the city, attributed his win to hard work and a good message. “It’s overwhelming to win and it’s

A
s the first returns in Minnesota’s Second Congressional District began to emerge Tuesday night, it looked as if lesbian businesswoman Angie Craig would lose — a second time — to a former talk show host who once compared LGBT people to criminals.
Democrat Craig was trailing Republican U.S. Rep. Jason Lewis three hours after polls had closed. But before midnight, a “blue wave” began breaking in the state, and Craig’s campaign delivered, not only its own victory but, an important win for the LGBT community and a critical threshold that ensured Democrats would take back control of the U.S. House. Overall Tuesday night, openly LGBT candidates picked up three new seats in the U.S. House: Craig in Minnesota, Chris Pappas in New Hampshire, and Sharice Davids in Kansas. All three were the first openly LGBT candidates to win election to Congress from their states. U.S. Rep. Jared Polis won his historic bid to become governor of Colorado and the first openly gay man to be elected governor of any state. Voters also welcomed three new lesbian mayors: Teri Johnston in Key West, Besty Driver in Flemington, N.J., and Julia Fahl in Lambertville, N.J. The vast majority of more than 100 openly LGBT candidates for state legislative offices won. And, in Massachusetts, voters soundly voted “Yes” to retain a state law that prohibits discrimination based on gender identity in public accommodations – the first statewide vote on such protections. There were not “blue waves” in every state
Nov. 6 and, so, there were some disappointing losses for the LGBT community and the Democratic Party. Transgender Democrat Christine Hallquist fell short in her bid to unseat Vermont’s Republican incumbent Governor Phil Scott. And lesbian Democrat Gina Ortiz Jones fell just 689 votes short of defeating a Republican member of the U.S. House from Texas. But there were also some historic races with no winner yet declared as of Wednesday morning: U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema’s bid for a U.S. Senate seat from Arizona was still in limbo. With 99 percent of precincts tallied, Sinema had 48.46 percent of the vote to Republican Martha McSally’s 49.30 percent. No winner has yet been declared for the Michigan attorney general seat, though Michigan Secretary of State results Wednesday morning showed Republican John James had 49.57 percent of the vote to lesbian attorney Dana Nessel’s 45.54 percent. And bisexual Democratic candidate Katie Hill was hanging onto a razor-like lead over Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Steve Knight in California’s 25th Congressional district. According to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, 2018 marked the first time in U.S. history when there was an openly LGBT candidate running for office in every state. an “unprecedented Rainbow Wave.” Victory Fund Executive Director Annise Parker said Baldwin’s re-election to the U.S. Senate was among the community’s “highest priorities” for 2018. “To see this champion of equality handily defeat her anti-LGBTQ opponent was phenomenal,” Parker said. A new Congress Openly LGBT candidates were running for 23 seats in the U.S. House and four in the U.S. Senate. They won at least seven U.S. House seats and one U.S. Senate seat. As expected, Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin breezed to re-election in Wisconsin. As noted, at deadline a winner has still not been declared in U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema’s race to win a U.S. Senate seat from Arizona. Ironically, the Green Party candidate in that race took 38,597 votes from former Green Party member Sinema. At deadline, Sinema was 15,908 votes behind McSally.
Green Party candidate Paula Overby in Minnesota and Independent candidate Brad Peacock in Vermont lost their bids for U.S. Senate seats. The four incumbent LGBT U.S. representatives running for re-election all won: David Cicilline in Rhode Island (who is expected to seek a leadership position in the newly Democratic House), Sean Maloney in New York, Mark Pocan in Wisconsin, and Mark Takano in California. The newcomers, so far, will be Chris Pappas from New Hampshire, Sharice Davids from Kansas, and Angie Craig from Minnesota. Going into the election, the U.S. House had six openly LGBT members and the U.S. Senate had one. As of Wednesday morning, that caucus is seven in the House and Baldwin in the Senate. Governors There were four openly LGBT candidates for governor Tuesday night. Incumbent Democratic Governor Kate Brown of Oregon won re-election with a five-point margin. And U.S. Rep. Jared Polis won with a six-point lead over his Republican opponent. Both losing LGBT candidates for governor earned strong support at the ballot box, despite coming up short. Christine Hallquist, a state energy activist who became the first transgender candidate to win a major party nomination for governor, won a robust 40.5 percent of the vote but was ultimately beaten by popular Republican incumbent Governor Phil Scott in Vermont. And Lupe Valdez, a former Dallas sheriff, won 42 percent of the vote against popular Republican incumbent Governor Greg Abbott in Texas.
There were at least 101 openly LGBT candidates for state legislative offices Tuesday: 85 state house or assembly seats and 16 for state senate seats, in a total of 26 states. Of the 85 running for state house seats, 62 won, 18 lost, and five were still undetermined at deadline. Among the many “firsts” recorded Tuesday, Megan Hunt became the first openly LGBT candidate elected to the Nebraska state legislature. The latest poll predicted 74 percent would vote to retain the two-year-old law. Great Expectations With Democrats winning the house, LGBT advocates have high hopes
Chris Johnson
Washington Blade
A
fter a disappointing election night in 2016 and two years of President Trump in the White House, Democrats came back with an important win Tuesday night and won control of the U.S. House — a victory celebrated by LGBT rights supporters eager to thwart the administration and advance equality measures.
NBC News declared late Tuesday night Democrats won enough seats on Election Day to take control of the House, marking the first time since 2008. Meanwhile, CNN declared the Senate would remain in Republicans’ hands after Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) declared the winner against a Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke. Despite an expected “blue” wave, political observers expected Republicans to retain control of the Senate. Topping the list for what LGBT rights supporters were expecting from the House with Democrats in control was oversight of the Trump administration’s anti-LGBT policies and advancement of the Equality Act. Sarah McBride, a transgender advocate and spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, identified the Equality Act as a top priority with Democrats finally in control of the House. “Voters across the country have helped to pull the emergency brake on the hateful agenda of Donald Trump and Mike Pence, and with a pro-equality majority in the U.S. House and pro-equality leadership in the U.S. Senate, we’re hopeful that we can see the Equality Act pass through the chamber this Congress,” McBride said. “That would send an important message that the U.S.
House of Representatives believes that LGBTQ people should be protected from discrimination throughout daily life.” Although the Equality Act, which would expand the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to bar anti-LGBT discrimination, is unlikely to become law if Democrats control only one chamber of Congress and President Trump is in the White House, McBride said movement in one chamber would be beneficial. “It would help build momentum for us to pass the Equality Act and have it signed into law by a pro-equality president when a pro-equality president is elected into office in 2020,” McBride said. “It would help to build momentum for state legislatures and more city councils to pass inclusive nondiscrimination protections.” Rea Carey, executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force, said legislation to prohibit anti-LGBT discrimination in Congress has languished for decades and the time has come for action. “Given that so many LGBTQ people and their families face discrimination in multiple areas of their lives, it is well past time for a federal bill to provide protections, so we will certainly continue working with members of the House to pass federal legislation, to push for passage of the Equality Act and ensure that our community members are finally

protected,” Carey said. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has signaled the Equality Act would be a personal priority and she’d assign the legislation a low bill number between 1 and 10 designating the legislation a top priority with Democrats in control of the House. In terms of the expected timing from LGBT advocates for movement on the Equality Act, the general consensus was as soon as possible, although no specific timeframe was offered. Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, called the Equality Act the “centerpiece bill” for the LGBT community and said timing for movement should be “sooner rather than
later,” but didn’t offer a specific deadline. Asked when she expects to see movement from the House on the Equality Act, Carey replied, “Yesterday.” “We will continue to push for the Equality Act very early on in this next session,” Carey said. “It is past time. We’ve been having this conversation for decades starting really in the 1970s when the first piece of legislation was introduced, but certainly into ENDA, and now the full Equality Act. But it is just well past time for our community to have protections.” But oversight of the Trump administration’s anti-LGBT policies — such as the transgender military ban, efforts to define laws against sex discrimination to exclude LGBT people and “religious

Why This ‘Blue Wave’ Was
Not a Tsunami LZ Granderson CNN

P
resident Donald Trump speaks in fragmented sentences and fractured truths. He is an adulterer, a hypocrite, politically clumsy and prone to retweeting racist posts. He has pushed well beyond the boundaries of any rational concept of presidential behavior, to say the least. This is why may politicos thought the 2018 midterm election was going to be a referendum. And it was, in a sense -- but not so much on Trump or the Republican Party as it was for a Democratic Party that continues to struggle to compose a message about what it is for as opposed to what it is against. Yes, the party took the House but the blue wave was not the tsunami party leadership had hoped it would be. This is in large part because the Democratic Party is still searching for its post 2008 identity. It wants to represent the young and diverse, but key leadership roles continue to be held by the old and the white, much like the Republican Party it chastises. In 2010 and in 2014, Democratic incumbents seeking reelection distanced themselves from President Barack Obama’s policies, not because they disagreed with them but because they weren’t popular. As repulsive as some of Trump’s rhetoric and
policies may have been to Republicans over the past two years, you did not see the same level of retreat from them in this election as Obama experienced in his 2010 midterm shellacking. Which is why the Democrats victory was not so resounding. Say what you will about the “Make America Great Again” slogan, the reality is that it’s effective because it is a clear, proactive message. What exactly was the Democratic Party’s message in 2016? 2018? What will it be in 2020? Ten years ago, then-Sen. Obama was elected president behind a clear message of hope. Since then it’s been a lot of fingerpointing and name-calling. Don’t get me wrong, taking the House is an important step for the Democratic Party’s revival. And there were some fairly historic victories worth mentioning as well, such as Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar becoming the first Muslim women elected to Congress, or Jared Polis becoming the first openly gay man to be elected governor. But if the party is to build momentum from the 2018 midterm, and not just tread water, leadership must spend more time defining what it is about and less time vilifying what it isn’t. After all, people don’t eat steak because it’s not tofu. They eat steak because it’s steak.

Can Syphilis be Prevented? A study has shown that taking doxycycline after sex can dramatically reduce the rates of the STD Jason Parsley
S
yphilis rates have increased 76 percent since 2013 and without a dramatic increase in federal funding public health advocates fear the trend will continue.
“With antibiotics its really tricky, and you have to be careful,” he said. Overuse or misuse of antibiotics can create drug resistant strains of bacterial infections. For instance, public health advocates have been concerned about gonorrhea since the STD has been showing resistance to antibiotics for many years now. to address the growing epidemic. His organization is calling for a 70 million dollar increase in STD prevention. Despite the STD epidemic Molina doesn’t see doxycycline as the answer. “This is not the strategy to take in the long term,” he said. “We might use this strategy for a short period of time. For instance in an outbreak in a well defined population.” Instead Molina said more money should be directed toward researching a vaccination for syphilis. For now though Molina believes the benefits outweigh the risks – namely creating a resistant strain of syphilis. The main treatment for syphilis has always been penicillin and it is still highly effective, Monlina said. So far no penicillin resistant strains have emerged. But some strains of syphilis have shown resistance to azithromycin, the second drug of choice when treating the STD. “We don’t want to jeopardize the second
line of treatment,” he said. “The data was interesting, but the risk of resistance [is real].” According to an article from the American Society of Microbiology azithromycin was once thought to be the most promising alternative to penicillin in treating syphilis. But in some countries, namely Chin, syphilis resistance to macrolides (a class of antibiotics that include azithromycin) has become widespread. The limited study Molina conducted did not show any resistance to doxycicline but he said more studies need to be conducted before any conclusions can be made. He said other researchers around the world are interested in conducting studies including some in the U.S. According to the national database of clinical trials there is one starting soon in Australia. “I know people have already started to get these drugs,” he said. “I worry about the consequences.”
This is a third part of a series of reports SFGN will publish on the rising STDs rates in the U.S. Visit SFGN.com/STDseries to read all of them.

The openly gay Richwood, Ohio junior missed all of last year’s season and required two surgeries according to Outsports. But last Saturday, that same athlete made all the difference in a game against the school’s arch-rival, Oberlin. According to Outsports, Pertuset scored two touchdowns, igniting the team to take home its first win of the season with a final score of 23-19. Earlier this season, on Sept 1, 6’1”, 210-pound Pertuset went on to become perhaps the first out gay college football player to score a touchdown, the Chimes reported. aunched on April 1, 2011, A Flair For Fudge offers a distinct spin on this classic chocolate treat, with over twenty unique creations such as Cuban Coffee Toffee, Key Lime Pie, Dark & Spicy, Salted Black Truffle and Bacon Bourbon, just to name a few. Tapping into her labor of love of making confectionary treats, founder Hilary Saporta followed a key principle from her experience as a marketing and promotions director for a mega motorcycle dealership. “We must make our product as unique as possible so it can stand out miles ahead of the competition.” Hilary began experimenting with ingredients such as Cuban coffee, black truffle salt, ginger, key limes, and believe it or not, guava and cream cheese. “I drew on my husband’s Cuban roots for that one,” she says. The results are some of the most original combinations and delicious tasting fudge,
anyone will ever experience. Mrs. Saporta received her first commercial order from a local property of a national hotel chain after her second week in business. And A Flair For Fudge landed a monthly gift program deal with a major automotive retailer shortly thereafter. A Flair For Fudge has continued to aggressively expand into the professional world by featuring a customized corporate gift program that has been extremely well received by Realtors, Financial Advisors, Mortgage Brokers and Title Companies. Firms in these and other industries can now give Real! Unique! Fudge! to its valued clients as their very special and personal way of saying “thank you.” Of course, this customized gift program is perfect for anyone to take advantage of and the holidays are just around the corner as we all know! “I am so flattered and thankful for all of the wonderful support, incredible response and exposure my product has received. We are currently featured at The Spice Lab, Total Wine & More, the Hilton Hotel on Fort Lauderdale Beach and we do wine tastings every month at Crown Wine & Spirits. Some of our flavors have even traveled to Brazil, Paris and England!” Hilary added. “All of this acceptance and success fuels my dream and determination to take this company nationally. I read somewhere that if you love what you do, you’ll love how you live. I’m certainly doing that and I realize how lucky I am,” Hilary said.

Sunday Service @ 10am Fellowship after Service
his was a very difficult week for our community. Eleven good and pure souls were extinguished by hate simply because they were Jews. They were Jews doing a quintessential Jewish act- celebrating a double naming ceremony during Shabbat services. All were wellknown and beloved in their community. The Torah portion this week is Chaye Sarah, (the life of Sarah). But we learn of Sarah’s death in the first verse! There is a midrash that explains that while her husband Abraham and son Isaac were going up to the mountain where Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, the Satan came to Sarah and told her what Abraham was planning. Sarah was so distraught that she collapsed and died. It seems to me that the Satan was also whispering to the deranged assailant who was convinced that Jews and HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) were somehow responsible for creating havoc in the US. Like other anti-Semitic tropes, this one built on the repulsive ideas that Jews do not belong here, even though the first Jew, Joachim Gans, came to the US in 1584. We have been significantly contributing to this country since then, but the Satan continues to whisper. What we can do in the face of such hate? I suggest to stand taller and more proud to be a Jew, to stand proudly with other Jews, to welcome and embrace the warm friendship and offers of protection from
non-Jews. Next I suggest that you go to a conspicuously Jewish event. Find your local synagogue, and check it out on a Friday night or Saturday morning. Read a Jewish book or watch a Jewish movie to further your knowledge on what it means to be a Jew- and there are many, many ways to be Jewish! Know that the Satan speaks to us too, trying to convince us that being Jewish is too hard, that it’s not worth being a target, that we can do good without being Jewish. There are many ways of destroying a people. We can also look at the example of Abraham, who arrived home from his traumatic encounter with Isaac and the angel with the hope that his family remained intact. But it was not to be. So Abraham purchased a burial plot for Sarah and himself, mourned his loss and bewailed his wife. Then he got up from his grief and continued on with his life. I believe this is the best action we can take to honor those who were killed, to live our lives with grace and pride and love.

O
n November 22, 2018 we gather together with our families, our biological families and/or our families of choice, to give thanks. Either way, on this special day the focus is giving thanks. In today’s time of division among politics, religion, race, sexual orientation, culture, sexism, immigration and much more it often is difficult to sift through the thick fog to see the light, but the light is indeed there. The fog is symbolic of the need for power, it reminds us of narcissism and human ego. The light shines through when we are able to see through the fog and focus on our commonalities which is the invitation to unity and love. We just celebrated Halloween which is one day per year when we embrace each other for our diversity and self expression and even give out prizes, yet the other 364 days per year one may be beaten or killed because of self-expression. Why can’t every day have the spirit of Halloween? The same goes for Thanksgiving. We are invited by the divine to choose the path of walking daily in a true spirit of thanks giving! It should happen every day not only the 4th Thursday of every November. Every Thursday at United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale 25 to 30 Volunteers gather together for a special meal. A delicious hot meal is prepared and graciously served
to 130 to 150 guests who are hungry. The guests also receive clothing, toiletries, referrals to housing and other assistance, a to go bag with treats but most importantly they receive love and compassion. The guests are served by people who are Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Buddhists and others from a multitude of faith expressions. The commonality between the Volunteers is that they are grateful to be able to serve others. The guests often respond with how grateful they are to receive the love that they find here. The Spirit of Thanks Giving fills the room every Thursday. After the Pittsburgh massacre in the Synagogue and also as a result of 304 mass shootings in the last 305 days, last weekend Temple Bat Yam hosted an Interfaith Service which was coordinated by JAM & All Interfaith Organization. People from all faiths gathered together to mourn the loss of the 11 people killed in Pittsburgh. Spiritual leaders from various faith traditions spoke and prayed with the filled synagogue and the common thread was the message of love and unity which filled the room. For that we were all tremendously thankful and it was through community that we re-discovered hope. We were thank full for the divine experience and unity and healing which occurred. Thanks giving brings people together. Let’s give thanks for the spiritual tool of thanks giving.
Join us for our annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Thursday Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. hosted by United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale 2501 NE 30th Street, Fort Lauderdale. Special Guests: Rabbi Noah Kitty, Rabbi Marc Labowitz, Rabbi David Spey.

A Death In Afghanistan Wakes Up Democracy In America Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com

A
n American hero died last week in Afghanistan. You never met him. You never heard of him. You probably have never, ever been to the place he was raised, or where he grew up. Today though, Brent Taylor, an American soldier who was the civilian mayor of North Ogden, Utah, is gone. Taylor died because America is still at war in Afghanistan, no matter what we say to the contrary. Yes, despite three presidents and 17 years, we are still at war. Our troops are still there. And now Major Taylor is dead. You just don’t hear a lot about Afghanistan on CNN or Fox. The chances are neither one ever mentioned Brent Taylor before this past weekend. The producers don’t see foreign wars getting a 7 share. They are too busy talking about Stormy Daniels. Last week, though, Afghanistan held its first parliamentary election in eight years. Over 4 million Afghan men and women voted, cautiously. They are still at war. To cast their votes, they had to risk their lives, brave daily threats, and endure deadly attacks by the Taliban, who had sworn to kill those who dared to vote. The Afghan people finally voted only because thousands of Americans and our coalition allies have been protecting them; fighting for the better part of 17 years to give them that right. Major Taylor died so they could cast that ballot. Taylor did not have to be there. He was the
civilian mayor of his hometown. He was a volunteer soldier. He was the loving husband to a caring wife, the father of seven children yes, seven. This week, America votes. We decide our futures by ballots, not bullets. Taylor died fighting in a foreign land for something we take so for granted here at home. Ironically, only two weeks ago, Taylor posted a final note on Facebook about the death of another soldier, a close friend of his, killed by the Taliban, one day before the Afghan voting began. Taylor’s simple but meaningful last words should be recorded and celebrated for posterity. Unknowingly, citizen Taylor sent America a lasting message. The soldier who was mayor wrote: “As the USA gets ready to vote in our own election next week, I hope everyone back home exercises their precious right to vote. And that whether the Republicans or the Democrats win, that we all remember that we have far more as Americans that unites us than divides us. United we stand, divided we fall. God Bless America.” Today, Taylor is gone. But like thousands of citizen soldiers before him, his deeds and his courage will live long beyond his time here on Earth. In the past few days, I read a lot about Major Taylor. I see he left Brigham Young University and joined the Army National Guard not long after the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001.

As a New Yorker, who lost friends there on that day, I salute him. I thank him. Anyone who has been to my office and seen all the pictures on my wall commemorating 9/11 understand how it has measured my life. So yes, even here in Wilton Manors, at a small, gay community newspaper not far from the Atlantic Ocean, we salute you, Major Taylor, your valor and your words. You helped make America special. “He was the best of men with the ability to see potential and possibility in everything around him,” North Ogden’s website said in announcing Taylor’s death. It added, “He was patriotic to the core and a shining example of what an American politician should be.” His wife, Jennie Taylor, was quoted this past January in a Utah newspaper. She said that service was an important part of their lives, and an example for their seven children. “In our family, we do what we can. If it’s something we can do, and the call comes to serve, we say yes.” We salute your husband, Mrs. Taylor. Yes, we do. And we remember him both as Mayor Taylor and Major Taylor. His volunteerism and his life honors our own. You do what you can when you can and where you can. You fight today to make a difference for tomorrow. Some, like Brent Taylor, do more than sacrifice their time to seek a better world. They sacrifice their lives. We can only hope that within our grasp, we can find the tools to make a difference in our own lives.
We here at the SFGN correspondingly salute you too, the readers of our paper and the volunteers in our community. We salute you whether you serve in the National Guard or volunteered as a poll watcher in this week’s election. We salute you whether you serve as a caregiver to an AIDS patient or donated your time to Taste of the Island. We salute you whether you are a first responder or the last person out of the Pride Center at the end of a charity event, cleaning up after everyone else has left. We salute you whether you run and lose your electoral race this past week, or win and get to serve. We salute you for trying to make a difference. The best way to remember Major Taylor’s effort is to bring peace to Afghanistan. Coalition forces are still being attacked. Soldiers are still dying. After 17 years of “Operation Enduring Freedom,” or whatever it is called today, Afghan citizens and allied soldiers are still dying in a land far away. Ask your congressmen what they have done to help bring an end to the carnage. Maybe it is time we elected a Congress and Senate focused on matters of consequence, and a president focused more on democracy rather than demagoguery. Maybe then, peace will come - with luck and dedication to causes that matter, maybe within our lifetime.

rguably the start of the LGBT rights movement began with the Stonewall Riots in June 1969. However, there was a lot happening prior to Stonewall that paved the way for the events there to occur. One of the lesser-known riots was the Compton Cafeteria Riots 3 years before Stonewall in August 1966 in San Francisco. Transgender women, drag queens, and to some extent the larger LGB community, were targeted, harassed, and abused by police in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco for years. This particular cafeteria was one of the few places trans women and drag queens could safely congregate after long nights trying to survive as they weren’t welcome at gay bars because of transphobia. Management and staff were tired of the trans women and drag queens hanging out in their restaurant because they felt they were loitering and causing them to lose more desirable customers. In order to deter them from coming back management frequently called police on them who could arrest the queens and trans women for “female impersonation” since cross-dressing was illegal in San Francisco until 1974. One night in August 1966 (the exact date is unknown because the riot wasn’t covered by newspapers and the police records no longer exist), the staff at Compton’s Cafeteria called the police when some trans customers became raucous. While an officer was attempting to arrest a trans woman, she threw her coffee in his face. The cafeteria erupted - windows were smashed, chairs overturned, the windows of the police car outside were broken - and dozens of people were arrested. The next night more members of the LGBT community joined in a picket of the cafeteria which wouldn’t allow trans people back in. Then 3 years later came the Stonewall Riots which set off the larger LGBT rights movement. Sylvia Rivera, a 17 year old drag queen at the time, is cited as one of the first bystanders to throw a bottle on the night of the riots. While it was “street kids,” trans women, particularly trans women of color, and drag queens

who started the LGBT rights movement, the movement was largely co-opted by cisgender gay white men, while people of color and women were pushed to the margins. Trans women and drag queens weren’t welcome in the feminist movement because, as feminist activist Jean O’Leary claimed at a 1973 Stonewall rally, drag queens made fun of women for entertainment value and profit. And they weren’t welcome in the LGBT rights movement either. After Stonewall, Gay Liberation Front and Gay Activists’ Alliance were formed. The GLF allowed trans people to participate but was not inclusive of them and the GAA specifically excluded trans people. In response, transgender communities formed their own organizations like STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), Queen’s Liberation Front, and the
Transsexual Activist Organization. STAR was founded in 1970 by Sylvia Rivera and Marsha “Pay it No Mind” Johnson, two trans women of color. When the LGBT rights movement was young, many people didn’t want trans women and drag queens to be part of the movement because they were trying to be seen as respectable members of society and drag queens and trans women didn’t fit that look. Outcasted from their own community, they did what they could to help each other. Well now it’s finally our turn - trans people are being attacked again, this time from the Trump administration who is trying to erase our existence. It’s time the larger LGB community comes together for their trans brothers and sisters. We helped get your movement off the ground and now it’s your turn to help us. We can’t win this fight alone.

Dolphin Democrats Gala Honors Our Community’s Best Jesse Monteagudo

T
he Dolphin Democrats, a leading voice for the LGBT community within and outside the Democratic Party of Broward County, held its 2018 Annual Awards Gala Oct. 21 at the Venue’s Crystal Ballroom in Wilton Manors. Under this year’s theme, “United We Win,” the Gala brought together over 130 Democrats, including some of the county’s leading political figures. Though Dolphin President Scott Herman was unable to attend the Gala, the event was a huge success, thanks to the work of Gala organizers Steve Fuller, Alfredo Olvera, Justin Proffitt and other committee members. Dolphins hope the Gala energized the community in time for the November 7, mid-term elections. Over dinner, the Dolphin Democrats gave out a variety of awards and listened to a rousing speech by State Rep. Shevrin Jones, who recently came out as a gay Black man. Dolphins Treasurer Adam Sabin was honored as Volunteer of the Year. Verna D. Johnson won the prestigious Jamie Bloodworth Leadership Award. Activists and past Dolphin presidents Michael Albetta and Ron Mills shared the LGBT Pioneers Award and Emma Collum, who is running for the State Legislature,
was honored as the Outstanding New Candidate. Tatiana Williams, founder of TransInclusive, won the first Bishop S.F. Makalani-Mahee Award for trans activism; the Pride Center won an award for Excellence in Community Service; and the Women’s March of Broward Chapter was honored as Partners in Equality. Two major awards were given out towards the end of the dinner, during dessert. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean J. Trantalis, a former president of the Dolphin Democrats, was given the club’s first Harvey Milk Award for LGBT activism. Congressman Ted Deutch was honored with the Outstanding Elected Official Award; but he was unable to attend to accept his award or give the Keynote Speech. Instead, the speech was given by Deutch’s congressional colleague Debbie Wasserman Schultz (a past award winner), who gave an amazing speech considering that she did not have much time to prepare it. All in all, the Gala was an amazing event which confirmed the Dolphin Democrats’ status as a leader in both Broward County’s Democratic Party and its LGBT community.

Equality Florida is Fighting for You
Publisher's Editorial
But it is always time to fight for yourself
Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com x
W
hen Equality Florida representatives met with me this summer and said they wanted to give SFGN their annual award, they indicated that it was because we had given them “years of support.” Uh-oh. My job, this newspaper’s job, is not to give any one, any organization, any public official, guaranteed, unadulterated, unconditional ‘support.’ Our job is to report. Reporting, as you can see from the awards we have won again this week, means exposing the warts and wounds of our community, even it means revealing that a community leader in Wilton Manors in 2018 may have sexually abused his students in a preparatory school in New Jersey in 1978. Reporting the news means revealing the facts that even your cherished local community Pride Center carelessly employed a sexual offender to illegally work at their campus. Equal rights mean equal responsibility. Over the years, we have had some sad stories to report. Good people sometimes do bad things. Bad people always look for a way to enrich themselves at someone else’s expense. If the story is newsworthy enough, we write about it, good, bad or ugly. Sometimes, it hurts. Other times, it heals. Even a bad review at a local restaurant can set off a reader. As a newspaper, you learn that sunlight is the best disinfectant. Nothing gives me more pride than doing our annual OUT50 issue, showcasing the good, the great, and the gallant amongst us. It does not always work that way, though. Life intervenes. At SFGN, we have been fortunate enough to illuminate many nonprofits in our community because they have done their jobs so well, with dignity and distinction. That is why accepting the award from Equality Florida is such an honor. Few nonprofits in this state have grown

with such stature and success as Equality Florida. Few have done so much for so many. They have become a force for social justice and community outreach. Over the past two decades, Equality Florida has opened chapters in Gainesville, Key West, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Miami, Orlando, Tallahassee, Pinellas, Jacksonville, and Sarasota. Advancing the cause of creating a fair and safe environment for all Floridians, EqFL has endured adversity, challenged opponents, and questioned authority. They have met resistance with resolve, difficulty with determination. With your help, they have risen to the challenge, spread their message, and protected your standing. Whether our cause won or lost the midterms, they will be there for you tomorrow as they were yesterday. Regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression, EqFL has become spokespersons for our community. On almost every issue of importance to us, from banning conversion therapy programs to supporting marches for unity and pride, they make their voices heard. When fear grew that a serial killer was targeting Jacksonville’s transgender community in 2018, they alerted law enforcement about the need to protect potential victims. When Governor Scott refused to extend LGBT protections for state employees in 2017, they censured him. When the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act went before Congress in 2016, they lobbied our congressional representatives in Florida to support them. When reproductive rights of women became a campaign issue in the 2014 midterm elections, they stood up on behalf of those women. When the Lake County School Board threatened to end gay-straight alliance clubs in 2013, they spoke out loudly in opposition.
Equality Florida has also fostered networking, training and development for young activists. They even run an internship program which delivers college credits for students Of course, there will be critics, saying they could have done better, should have done more. Who amongst us has not found something or someone to criticize at one point or another? At this newspaper, so too do we have voices that question our priorities and push our needle. The bottom line is we all belong to a community that needs our voices heard. Equality Florida has become that voice. Equality Florida has in fact become the LGBT community’s first responders. In this state, with so many lawmakers and legislators lined up against us, the Nadine Smith and Stratton Politzer leadership team heading Equality Florida has done us proud. I am proud to accept their award because I know SFGN will hold Equality Florida to its mission. They have been noble soldiers in the ongoing war for social justice in our lifetime. They have served us well. Equality Florida continues to do its best against the demons and demagogues populating our legislature. We don’t win every
election or prevail in each debate. But they have been there for us, and I hope SFGN has been there for you. The battle for human rights preceded our lifetime and will go on well beyond it. Never forget that while you may finally be standing on the shore in Dade and Broward, others can be drowning in the ocean in Ocala and Pensacola. The small plaque we frame in our office is simple testimony to the hundreds of reporters and thousands of words SFGN has published over the past nine years. Our hope is that each week we can showcase and illuminate our community as good people living honorable lives. This week, we thank Equality Florida for recognizing SFGN for trying to do our job, understanding each week, with every issue, we must rise to the challenge. Tides change. You ride with them, up and down, but you never give up. Our duty, however, is to report the news, like Jack Webb used to do on the old black and white television show, Dragnet, good or bad, “Just the facts, ma’am, just the facts.” One personal note, I might add in closing. Getting out of bed is half the battle. But it’s a whole start.

Nala
Beautiful Nala (ID 603379) would love to go home with you. Nala is a shy gal, but she is incredibly sweet! She loves people and animals of all ages and is a total sucker for catnip, and she even likes to play fetch with balls of paper towels! This affectionate lady is a total cuddle bug, and she wants nothing more than to sleep in bed with her humans. Unfortunately her past owner was forced to give her up due to a major life change, but in hopes that she has the best life possible, her previous owner sponsored her adoption fee.
The adoption fee for dogs over 6 months is $100 and felines over 6 months are $30. When you adopt from the Humane Society of Broward County the dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped, receive preliminary vaccinations, cats are feline leukemia tested, and dogs over 7 months are tested for heartworm. They also receive a flea/tick preventative, a 10-day limited health care plan from VCA Animal Hospitals, 30 days of Trupanion Pet Insurance and a bag of Purina ONE pet food. Bountiful Brunch Buffets Rick Karlin
A
comedian once described brunch as, “…a meal invented by rich white chicks to rationalize day drinking and binging on French toast.” I don’t know about it being exclusive to white chicks, cause gay men have been meeting for brunch since about the time of Lincoln. In my younger days if you got lucky on Saturday night and hooked up with a particularly good-looking man, you brought him to brunch the next day to show off. And if you didn’t hook up (or your hook-up was less than fabulous), you showed up by yourself anyway, just to see how your friends had scored. Sometimes brunch was little more than coffee and scrambled eggs at the local diner, but sometimes we’d get festive and end up a hotel or fancy restaurant. I still enjoy those bountiful buffets you find at fine dining establishments and hotels. However, now I’m lucky enough to show up with the handsomest man in the room every time, because I married him. Here are a few places to check out the next time you’re feeling extravagant. Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina 2301 SE 17th St., Fort Lauderdale 954-728-3530 Pier66HotelMarina.com After a decade of hosting only special events, Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina’s Pier Top is offering a once a month “Brunch in the Sky.” Unlike other brunch spots in the area, Pier Top’s luxury space is situated on the 17th floor of the Fort Lauderdale landmark hotel, giving guests a 360-degree view of Fort Lauderdale’s oceanfront landscape, in a room that rotates every 66 minutes. Visitors will relish what seems like a never-ending sight that spans across the Intracoastal, and all the way out to the ocean. Yes, the room rotates every 66 minutes, and a round trip on the elevator takes 66 seconds, and there are 66 spikes in the crown that tops the building. All those 66 references date back to the time when the property was owned by the Phillips 66 gasoline company. The marina featured the company’s gas for refueling yachts and speedboats, there was a gas station on the grounds and, of course, the landmark restaurant, which opened in….1967 (although construction was completed in 1966). Now that that bit of trivia is out of the way, let’s talk about the opulent buffet which

gives an entirely new meaning to bountiful. There’s a sushi station with standard rolls as well as more unusual fare such as; herbcrusted ahi tuna, pastrami spiced scallops, passion fruit glazed poached shrimp, salmon tartar, and grilled octopus. For those not fond of fish, other small dish options showcase; confit potato with pork belly, duck confit and fig tart, imported and domestic cheeses and a charcuterie display, as well as an abundance of vegetable dishes; hearts of palm salad, shaved fennel, tropical orzo salad, and assorted spreads (baba ghanoush, salmon mousse and hummus) served with artisanal breads. A variety of stations offer up everything from slices of Tomahawk prime rib, ham or turkey, to omelets and eggs prepared with a variety of accompaniments, pancakes made to order and specialty pasta dishes, such as wild mushroom & porcini ravioli or primavera. Finish off your meal with a medley of sweets from a display that features Key lime tarts, cannoli, coconut panna cotta, coffee tres leches, rice pudding, macaroons, chocolate dipped strawberries, dulce de leche tarts with raspberries and assorted petit fours. Unlimited mimosa and bloody Mary drinks are included in the $75 per person tab. The next dates for the Pier 66 brunch are Nov. 18 and Dec. 9. Reservations are recommended for both seatings (11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.), although walk-ins are welcome. American Social Bar & Restaurant. 721 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale 954-764-7005 AmSoBar.com Whether you’re looking to start your weekend with a bang or just nurse the headache from last night, the decadent atmosphere of American Social Bar, is a good way to start the day. Available Saturdays and Sundays, the buffet is a steal. The all-youcan-eat deal, served from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., is just $21.50 per person. Items run the gamut, from made-to-order omelets, freshly pressed Belgian waffles, salt-andpepper prime rib, fried chicken, chilled snow crab legs, house-smoked Atlantic salmon, two kinds of breakfast sausages, hickory smoked bacon, roasted potatoes, to warm biscuits and gravy, and an assortment of baked goods. More interested in the booze? A bottomless bloody Mary/mimosa package runs an additional $18 per person.

Marks certainly merits mention in an article on bountiful brunches. The a la carte menu contains such tempting dishes, such as filet and eggs, steak tips and eggs, a croissant sandwich (two fried eggs topped with Canadian bacon and
Velveeta cheese), a Belgian Waffle, and breakfast eggrolls (stuffed with scrambled eggs, sautéed spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, and Velveeta cheese). For the health conscious, there’s the veggie egg-white omelet. That extensive list of options doesn’t even include J. Marks’ variations on eggs Benedict. In addition to the classic version (served on Tuscan ciabatta bread), it offers a vegetarian version served atop sautéed spinach, with fresh tomato slices as well as sun-dried tomatoes. Other options include; bacon, blue crab, cheeseburger and the Fierro Bennie (prosciutto and smoked mozzarella topped with poached eggs, and spicy sauce). It wouldn’t be brunch without Mimosas and Bloody Mary options, and at $3 each or $15 for unlimited refills, it’s quite a bargain.

Tidbits and Tidings from Compass
Mark your calendars: Smart Ride, Transgender Day of Remembrance & World AIDS Day Claudia Harrison The SMART Ride, a two-day, 165-mile bike ride from Miami to Key West, raises funds for seven AIDS service organizations across Florida, including Compass. An energized team of Compass staff members and dedicated volunteers are heading south to join hundreds of other volunteer crews and riders taking part in the ride from Nov. 16-17. We are grateful to the amazing cycling teams from Palm Beach County for their tireless fundraising efforts on behalf of Compass, and their dedication to the ride. Compass’ own Julie Seaver will be riding! There’s still time to support a rider, a team or a crew member at www.TheSmartride.org. On Tuesday Nov. 13, LGBTQ author Kelly Madrone will be at The Book Cellar on Lake Ave for a book signing/talk about the new edition of her book “LGBTQ: The Survival Guide for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Teens.” The book has received rave reviews, and is described by many as a book they wish they’d had when they were in high school! The next night, Wednesday Nov. 14, Kelly will be at Compass for a community discussion with our youth group about owning your story. Both events are free and open to the public. We hope you’ll attend one - or both. You can register for Wednesday night’s event at http://www.eventbrite.com/e/compassauthor-event-tickets-52018950080.

On Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m., Compass will hold our annual memorial service to recognize the Transgender Day of Remembrance, when we remember those members of the trans community who were killed over the past year. Transgender people, especially transgender women of color, are the victims of deadly violence disproportionately more than other groups, and as we honor their memories, we dedicate ourselves to helping make the world a safer place for all who are transgender. This event is also open to the public. Dec. 1 marks the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day, an internationally recognized day to remember those who have died of AIDS, reaffirm our support of people living with AIDS, and recommit ourselves to eradicating the disease. For over a decade, Compass has marked this day by presenting South Florida’s largest display of panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt, and this year is no different. Lake Worth’s mayor will be in attendance to read the city’s moving World AIDS Day proclamation. There will be inspiring words from survivors of the disease, musical performances, and of course the public opening of Compass’ quilt display, which will be up for two weeks. The event takes place from 3-6 p.m. on Saturday Dec. 1. All are welcome to join us at the Dec. 1 World AIDS Day event and the full two weeks’ worth of events following this opening night gathering. Racing Legend Sets Record Straight in New Documentary J.W. Arnold
H
urley Haywood is a racing legend: He holds a record five overall victories at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, three at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and two at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Then there’s his TransAm title, two International Motor Sports GT Championship titles and 18 IndyCar races, including an Indianapolis 500. He seemed to have it all—fame, fortune and beautiful models on both arms. But Haywood also had a secret. It was one of those “open” secrets, whispered about from time to time in racing circles, but when a high school student asked to interview the driver for a writing project, Haywood decided it was finally time to come out to his fans. The boy confided to Haywood that he was gay and he seemed to know the driver was gay, too. “He told me, ‘I have been bullied my entire life. Every morning when I wake up, I think about suicide. I have absolutely no respect for myself.’ Later, his mother called and told me I had saved his life. It was a powerful experience to be able to help him get through that and I knew it was time,” Haywood recalled. “When [executive producer] Patrick Dempsey came to me with his proposal, we were at a race in Atlanta. I told him maybe it was time that I did something. If my voice was strong enough to save one kid, it may be good enough to save more.” In “Hurley,” a new documentary being screened on Nov. 16 at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, Haywood speaks for the first time about being gay in the
macho world of motor sports during the ‘70s and ‘80s. Throughout his career, the longtime Florida resident had always been reserved, even shy when dealing with the media. Haywood quickly developed trust in filmmaker Derek Dodge. They would work together for three years to complete the documentary. Haywood first saw a rough cut several months ago in New York. “It was sort of an emotional roller coaster for me. Then [the film] went into the polishing phase. There were some areas that were cleaned up and the end product was really good. We had a showing at Patrick Dempsey’s studio in L.A. and it was seen by friends from the racing industry and friends from all over the place,” he said. Haywood, who retired from competition in 2012, is no longer burdened by his secret. Many in the industry have met his husband Steve and the film and a recent biography will tell his story to fans around the world. “The most important thing to remember is not what you are, but who you are, whether you’re gay or black or Indian or whatever,” he said. “The biggest medicine for suicide is discussion and conversation, regardless of the demons that a person may be facing. If you give somebody a road to go down— throughout my life and everybody’s life— there’s barriers you have to get over. If the barrier stands in front of you and you don’t go around it, then that’s your fault. We knock down barriers all the time in all the things we do,” Haywood concluded.
“Hurley” will be screened on Friday, Nov. 16 at 9 p.m. at Savor Cinema, 503 S.E. 6th St. in Fort Lauderdale, as part of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. Hurley Haywood will sign copies of his book, “Hurley: From the Beginning,” at 7:30 p.m. For tickets and more information, go to FLIFF.com.

Critics Pounce On Straight Washing Of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Nick Adkins
T
he PG-13 Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” was premiered on Thursday night. Some people are dissatisfied with how Freddie Mercury, the band’s bisexual frontman, is being depicted. Vulture reported that Director Stephen Frears, who was attached to an early incarnation of the project, would have had more gay sex in his version of the movie. Simply titled “Freddie Mercury,” Stephen Frears was just one of several directors hired to direct an earlier iteration of the Queen biopic. The film was set to star controversial comedy provocateur Sacha Baron Cohen. “Sacha wanted to make a very outrageous film, which I would imagine Freddie Mercury would have approved of,” Frears told Vulture. “Outrageous in terms of his homosexuality and outrageous in terms of endless naked scenes. Sacha loved all of that.” Pinknews reported the director “drifted away” from the project after Cohen’s departure due to Cohen’s script disputes with current Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor, who “wanted a certain amount of caution” to preserve Mercury’s public image.
Pride reported that when the first trailer for “Bohemian Rhapsody” was dropped in May, many people were left wondering if his life was going to be entirely straight-washed from the film. “Anyone else mildly annoyed that the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer features gay/bi superstar Freddie Mercury flirting with and twirling with a woman but no indication of his love of men?” tweeted openly gay TV director Bryan Fuller. Pinknews reported the film’s eventual star, Rami Malek, said there were “conversations left and right” about how to further include Mercury’s “beautiful relationship with Jim Hutton,” whose wedding band the singer died wearing. “It was something I pushed for, to be quite honest, as much as possible and repeatedly brought to the attention of producers and directors and everyone who would listen,” Malek said. “I hope people do not feel that the film does a disservice to the community, and if it were me, I would’ve loved to have incorporated more.”
