Brief Summary of Patient Information about GENVOYA GENVOYA (jen-VOY-uh) (elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide) tablets Important: Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about medicines that should not be taken with GENVOYA. There may be new information about GENVOYA. This information is only a summary and does not take the place of talking with your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment.
What is the most important information I should know about GENVOYA? GENVOYA can cause serious side effects, including: • Build-up of lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis). Lactic acidosis may happen in some people who take GENVOYA. Lactic acidosis is a serious medical emergency that can lead to death. Lactic acidosis can be hard to identify early, because the symptoms could seem like symptoms of other health problems. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any of the following symptoms, which could be signs of lactic acidosis: • • • • • • •
feel very weak or tired have unusual (not normal) muscle pain have trouble breathing have stomach pain with nausea or vomiting feel cold, especially in your arms and legs feel dizzy or lightheaded have a fast or irregular heartbeat
• Severe liver problems. Severe liver problems may happen in people who take GENVOYA. In some cases, these liver problems can lead to death. Your liver may become large and you may develop fat in your liver. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any of the following symptoms of liver problems: • your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice) • dark “tea-colored” urine • light-colored bowel movements (stools) • loss of appetite for several days or longer • nausea • stomach pain • You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or severe liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking GENVOYA for a long time. • Worsening of Hepatitis B infection. GENVOYA is not for use to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV). If you have HBV infection and take GENVOYA, your HBV may get worse (flareup) if you stop taking GENVOYA. A “flare-up” is when your HBV infection suddenly returns in a worse way than before. • Do not run out of GENVOYA. Refill your prescription or talk to your healthcare provider before your GENVOYA is all gone. • Do not stop taking GENVOYA without first talking to your healthcare provider. • If you stop taking GENVOYA, your healthcare provider will need to check your health often and do blood tests regularly for several months to check your HBV infection. Tell your healthcare provider about any new or unusual symptoms you may have after you stop taking GENVOYA.

What is GENVOYA? GENVOYA is a prescription medicine that is used without other HIV-1 medicines to treat HIV-1 in people 12 years of age and older: • who have not received HIV-1 medicines in the past or • to replace their current HIV-1 medicines in people who have been on the same HIV-1 medicines for at least 6 months, have an amount of HIV-1 in their blood (“viral load”) that is less than 50 copies/mL, and have never failed past HIV-1 treatment HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS. GENVOYA contains the prescription medicines elvitegravir (VITEKTA®), cobicistat (TYBOST®), emtricitabine (EMTRIVA®) and tenofovir alafenamide. It is not known if GENVOYA is safe and effective in children under 12 years of age. When used to treat HIV-1 infection, GENVOYA may: • Reduce the amount of HIV-1 in your blood. This is called “viral load”. • Increase the number of CD4+ (T) cells in your blood that help fight off other infections. Reducing the amount of HIV-1 and increasing the CD4+ (T) cells in your blood may help improve your immune system. This may reduce your risk of death or getting infections that can happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections). GENVOYA does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. You must stay on continuous HIV-1 therapy to control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses. Avoid doing things that can spread HIV-1 infection to others: • Do not share or re-use needles or other injection equipment. • Do not share personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them, like toothbrushes and razor blades. • Do not have any kind of sex without protection. Always practice safer sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom to lower the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Ask your healthcare provider if you have any questions about how to prevent passing HIV-1 to other people.
Who should not take GENVOYA? Do not take GENVOYA if you also take a medicine that contains: • alfuzosin hydrochloride (Uroxatral®) • carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Epitol®, Equetro®, Tegretol®, Tegretol-XR®, Teril®) • cisapride (Propulsid®, Propulsid Quicksolv®) • ergot-containing medicines, including: dihydroergotamine mesylate (D.H.E. 45®, Migranal®), ergotamine tartrate (Cafergot®, Migergot®, Ergostat®, Medihaler Ergotamine®, Wigraine®, Wigrettes®), and methylergonovine maleate (Ergotrate®, Methergine®) • lovastatin (Advicor®, Altoprev®, Mevacor®) • midazolam, when taken by mouth • phenobarbital (Luminal®) • phenytoin (Dilantin®, Phenytek®) • pimozide (Orap®) • rifampin (Rifadin®, Rifamate®, Rifater®, Rimactane®) • sildenafil (Revatio®), when used for treating lung problems • simvastatin (Simcor®, Vytorin®, Zocor®) • triazolam (Halcion®) • the herb St. John’s wort or a product that contains St. John’s wort
What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking GENVOYA? Before taking GENVOYA, tell your healthcare provider if you: • have liver problems including hepatitis B infection • have kidney or bone problems • have any other medical conditions • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if GENVOYA can harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you become pregnant while taking GENVOYA. Pregnancy registry: there is a pregnancy registry for women who take HIV-1 medicines during pregnancy. The purpose of this registry is to collect information about the health of you and your baby. Talk with your healthcare provider about how you can take part in this registry. • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed if you take GENVOYA. – You should not breastfeed if you have HIV-1 because of the risk of passing HIV-1 to your baby. – At least one of the medicines in GENVOYA can pass to your baby in your breast milk. It is not known if the other medicines in GENVOYA can pass into your breast milk. – Talk with your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Other medicines may affect how GENVOYA works. Some medicines may interact with GENVOYA. Keep a list of your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. • You can ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a list of medicines that interact with GENVOYA. • Do not start a new medicine without telling your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider can tell you if it is safe to take GENVOYA with other medicines.
How should I take GENVOYA?
• Take GENVOYA exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to take it. GENVOYA is taken by itself (not with other HIV-1 medicines) to treat HIV-1 infection.
• GENVOYA is usually taken 1 time each day. • Take GENVOYA with food. • If you need to take a medicine for indigestion (antacid) that contains aluminum and • • • •
magnesium hydroxide or calcium carbonate during treatment with GENVOYA, take it at least 2 hours before or after you take GENVOYA. Do not change your dose or stop taking GENVOYA without first talking with your healthcare provider. Stay under a healthcare provider’s care when taking GENVOYA. Do not miss a dose of GENVOYA. If you take too much GENVOYA, call your healthcare provider or go to the nearest hospital emergency room right away. When your GENVOYA supply starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider or pharmacy. This is very important because the amount of virus in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time. The virus may develop resistance to GENVOYA and become harder to treat.
What are the possible side effects of GENVOYA? GENVOYA may cause serious side effects, including: • See “What is the most important information I should know about GENVOYA?” • Changes in body fat can happen in people who take HIV-1 medicine. These changes may include increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck (“buffalo hump”), breast, and around the middle of your body (trunk). Loss of fat from the legs, arms and face may also happen. The exact cause and long-term health effects of these conditions are not known. • Changes in your immune system (Immune Reconstitution Syndrome) can happen when you start taking HIV-1 medicines. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections that have been hidden in your body for a long time. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you start having any new symptoms after starting your HIV-1 medicine. • New or worse kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys before you start and while you are taking GENVOYA. Your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking GENVOYA if you develop new or worse kidney problems. • Bone problems can happen in some people who take GENVOYA. Bone problems may include bone pain, softening or thinning (which may lead to fractures). Your healthcare provider may need to do tests to check your bones. The most common side effect of GENVOYA is nausea. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. • These are not all the possible side effects of GENVOYA. For more information, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist. • Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. General information about the safe and effective use of GENVOYA. Medicines are sometimes prescribed for purposes other than those listed in a Patient Information leaflet. Do not use GENVOYA for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give GENVOYA to other people, even if they have the same symptoms you have. It may harm them. This Brief Summary summarizes the most important information about GENVOYA. If you would like more information, talk with your healthcare provider. You can ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for information about GENVOYA that is written for health professionals. For more information, call 1-800-445-3235 or go to www.GENVOYA.com. We rarely go out on Wilton Drive - the idea of having to time yourself during your free time is NOT the reason to live in Florida - it destroys the leisure of the gathering - we prefer a place that has its own parking lot so that we can dine and celebrate knowing that we will not have to check the clock - good luck to the business on the Drive - you are letting the commissioners kill your sales.

They're trying. Everyone knows a 3-4 tiered parking garage behind city hall is the cure, but that costs about $5m. So until then-this will suffice.

Transgender actress, Warhol muse holly Woodlawn dies at 69 (AP) Holly Woodlawn, the transgender actress made famous by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey in their 1970s films "Trash" and "Women in Revolt," has died. Woodlawn died Sunday in Los Angeles after a battle with cancer, said her former caretaker and friend Mariela Huerta. She was 69. Born Harold Danhakl, she took on the name Holly Woodlawn after running away from home at age 15 and hitchhiking to New York City, where she became one of Warhol's drag queen "superstars." Her story was immortalized in the first lines of the Lou Reed song "Walk on the Wild Side." It began: "Holly came from Miami, F.L.A. Hitchhiked her way across the U.S.A. Plucked her eyebrows on the way. Shaved her legs and then he was a she. She says, 'Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side.' "

ill T. Jones to be Honored by Human Rights Campaign
(AP) Tony Award-winning choreographer and mentor Bill T. Jones will be honored by the Human Rights Campaign with its Visibility Award, which recognizes those who shine a light on the struggles of people living with HIV. The nation's largest LGBT civil rights organization said Monday that Jones would be toasted at a gala dinner on Feb. 6 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. Jones won Tonys for choreographing "Spring Awakening" and "Fela!," and also a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant recipient. He formed the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company in 1982 with his late partner Arnie Zane. He has tackled racism and faith in "Last Supper at Uncle Tom's Cabin/The Promised Land," explored those with AIDS in "Still/Here" and created a hip-hop adaptation of Aeschylus' "The Seven."

OP Lawmaker Wants Mich. to Ignore SCOTUS Marriage Ruling
(EDGE) A resolution to ignore the United States Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage was introduced into the Michigan House of Representatives Thursday. The resolution, which was introduced by republican lawmaker Thomas Hooker, is urging Gov. Rick Snyder and his lieutenants to "uphold their oaths of office and re-claim the state's sovereignty by not recognizing or enforcing" the Obergefell ruling, WZZM reports. The news came as little surprise in the House. According to a report in MLive, Hooker (R), debuted his resolution during a "rally to protect religious people and stop persecution of religious people" which was held in Lansing on Wednesday.

Holly Woodlawn.
Woodlawn explained in a 2007 interview with the British newspaper The Guardian that she didn't get to know Reed until after the song was released in 1972. Woodlawn received critical acclaim for her film roles, but she couldn't find mainstream success. Her cult status helped her make a comeback in such 1990s independent films as "Twin Falls Idaho" and "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss." More recently, she appeared in the TV comedy "Transparent." Of her time as a Warhol superstar, she told the Guardian: "I felt like Elizabeth Taylor! Little did I realize that not only would there be no money, but that your star would flicker for two seconds and that was it. But it was worth it, the drugs, the parties, it was fabulous." Huerta said Woodlawn had no survivor. Plans for a memorial service were pending.
"Courts do not substitute their social and economic beliefs for the judgement of legislative bodies or elected and passed laws," Hooker said. Although Hooker may be ignorant of the function of the high court to interpret the constitutionality of laws, he is apparently not alone. During a rally Wednesday, fellow Republican State Rep. Lee Chatfield vowed to co-sponsor the bill. "Make no mistake, when government destroys God, government becomes God," said Chatfield, whose father is a Christian minister. Ironically, the "religious freedom" rally was also attended by members of the Satanic Temple of Detroit. Republican Thomas Hooker.

"Religious freedom to us means religious plurality," Satanic Temple director Jex Blackmore told MLive. "The problem is when religious liberty is interpreted as a single voice or opinion and is endorsed by our government as that one singular view point."

RC Parodies Trump Campaign With Pro-LGBT Merchandise
(EDGE) The Donald just got gay-afied, thanks to the Human Rights Campaign. The 2016 GOP presidential hopeful has been touting his campaign's slogan "Make America Great Again." Donald Trump has said it during a number of his speeches and is probably best known for wearing the message on a baseball cap. But the HRC got the bright idea to transform the slogan into an LGBT-positive message. The human rights group is now selling baseball hats with a parody of Trump's slogan: "Make America Gay Again" and "Make America LGBTQ Again," the hat's read. The Huffington Post reports the caps have become instant bestsellers. The HRC calls the hats "a friendly reminder" to voters that America should be "a place of equality for all." "We wanted to capture the energy and excitement of our supporters and get people talking about electing a champion for LGBT equality next year," Human Rights Campaign Creative Director Don Kiser told The Huffington Post. "And a fun cap never hurts." Trump has yet commented on the hats...but knowing him, we bet he will soon! For $26, you can purchase a hat by clicking here.

hicago School District To Reconsider Transgender Locker Room Deal
(AP) School officials in a suburban Chicago district said Friday they may back out of a newly minted deal with the U.S. Department of Education allowing a transgender student to use a girls' locker room, over a dispute about a hypothetical: What would happen if the girl decided against using the privacy curtains she's agreed to use? Less than two days after school board members approved the settlement, Township High School District 211 Superintendent Daniel Cates had said if the student doesn't use privacy curtains when changing or showering, she won't be granted unrestricted access to the locker room. Federal officials countered that the agreement does not require her to use a privacy curtain, although the student has said she will do so. The student, who has not been identified and wants to remain anonymous, was born male and identifies as female. She filed a federal complaint after being denied unrestricted locker room access. On Nov. 2, after the school district installed privacy curtains in the locker room, federal officials found the district violated the student's rights under Title IX. The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, which represents the girl, said "Our client should be treated as every teenage girl, with the right to exercise her own sense of modesty and privacy," said ACLU spokesman Edwin Yohnka. "Threatening to cut off our client's access to the locker room if she does not promise to use the privacy curtains exclusively simply moves her current segregation from a separate room to a space inside the locker room, as OCR already concluded."

ofounder of Defunct Gay Republican Group Endorses Hillary Clinton
(EDGE) Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton received an unexpected endorsement Thursday from Jimmy LaSalvia, a former Log Cabin Republican and cofounder of the now-defunct gay conservative group GOProud. In an opinion piece published on Huffington Post, LaSalvia, who resigned from the Republican party in 2014 over what he called "a tolerance of bigotry," praised the former Secretary of State as the obvious choice for "other fiscally conservative, culturally modern voters who care about America's place in the world." "Our vote for president is our vote for who we trust to be in charge to deal with all of the issues that we don't know about yet," LaSalvia wrote. "That's why it's so important for the president to see things from the perspective of all Americans, no matter who we are. The ability to empathize with people who aren't like they are is the most important trait a president can have in a country as diverse as ours. Clinton is the only major contender who has demonstrated that ability." LaSalvia was quick to swipe at the field of Republican presidential hopefuls, most of whom are appealing to the [party’s] anti-gay base. "Any candidate who advocates treating some Americans differently under the law than others is unacceptable to me and most other voters," LaSalvia wrote. "I don't support denying rights or granting special rights to anyone, for any reason, whether it's based on their religion, race, sexual orientation, cultural background, or any other characteristic." LaSalvia recently published the memoir "NO HOPE: Why I Left the GOP (and You Should Too)."

The fight for family
Couples press for end to mississippi Gay adoption Ban (AP) Four lesbian couples pressed a federal judge on Friday to overturn Mississippi's last-in-the-nation ban on allowing same-sex couples to adopt, but lawyers for the state argued the lawsuit should be tossed out. Plaintiffs want U.S. District Judge Daniel Jordan III to issue a preliminary injunction allowing members of two couples who don't have parental rights to adopt their spouse's children immediately. They say that after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriage, there's no need to wait for a full trial. Roberta Kaplan, arguing for the plaintiffs, said Mississippi is still telling same-sex couples that "their marriages and families are not as good as the marriages and families of straight couples. And that's directly contrary to what the Supreme Court said."
K
an. Senator Criticizes Gay Rights, Media's Foster Care Coverage
(AP) A south-central Kansas lawmaker has sent an email to constituents criticizing media coverage of the rights of gay couples in the state's foster care system. Republican Sen. Forrest Knox from Altoona said in the email sent Wednesday that the media prioritizes gay rights over the needs of foster children. Knox chairs a special committee on foster care that last month reviewed research by Catholic priest and sociologist Donald Paul Sullins on the fitness of same-sex couples to foster. Sullins' research has been disputed by scientific organizations, including the American Psychological Association. Knox told the Wichita Eagle that he believes the research shows that traditional nuclear families best meet foster childrens' needs. The Kansas Department of Children and Families has repeatedly said it does not discriminate against same-sex couples.

(AP) An attorney for three-same sex couples who sued Arkansas to require both spouses be listed on children's birth certificates is asking the state's highest court to not block a judge's ruling striking down part of the state's birth certificate law. Attorney Cheryl Maples on Thursday asked the Arkansas Supreme Court to deny the state's motion to stay Pulaski County Circuit Judge Tim Fox's ruling ordering the state to issue amended certificates to the couples. Fox's decision also declared a portion of the state's birth certificate law unconstitutional after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage nationwide. Maples has said that move

Mississippi officials, though, argue the lawsuit is defective because the plaintiffs are suing state officials who have no power to order an adoption. And after the plaintiffs then sued four chancery judges who can order adoptions, the state argued that it's improper for a federal court judge to issue a blanket order to a state judge when the plaintiffs haven't even filed adoption actions. "These plaintiffs and everybody else should be required to go to state court first," said Justin Matheny, representing Attorney General Jim Hood. He also implied that the ban might not apply to one person who wants to adopt the child of their spouse, saying "there is an ambiguity about how it works," and said anyone rejected by a chancery judge could appeal to the Mississippi Supreme Court.
clears the way for other married same-sex couples to receive amended certificates. Attorney General Leslie Rutledge asked justices Wednesday to stay Fox's ruling, saying it could have unintended consequences.
K
ansas Lawmaker Calls for Audit of Child Welfare Agency
(AP) A Kansas lawmaker said he will seek an audit to determine whether the state Department for Children and Families discriminates against same-sex couples in foster care and adoption cases amid questions about why a Topeka councilman and his wife were granted custody of a child who had been cared for by a lesbian couple for 11 months. The effort from Rep. Jim Ward, a Democrat from Wichita, comes after the Topeka couple, Jonathan and Allison Schumm, were charged in November with one count each of aggravated battery and four counts of endangering a child. The Department of Children and Families had recommended the couple receive custody of a child who had been in the custody of Lisa and Tesa Hines of Wichita. Ward's request also comes after a legislative hearing last month during which some lawmakers questioned whether same-sex parents should be allowed to foster children. Ward said Wednesday he will ask for the audit Dec. 10, when the Legislative Post-Audit Committee meets, The Wichita Eagle reported. "It never made any sense that a child, an infant, who had bonded with foster parents was going to be pulled from those foster parents to be placed with a family that already had, as I recall, 13 children," said Kari Schmidt, attorney for the Wichita couple, Lisa and Tesa Hines. "It just defied logic. Why would you do that?" Schmidt said Lisa Hines is a professor of social work at
Wichita State University and called her "clearly qualified" to care for the child. The DCF recommended the Schumms as adoptive parents because they had adopted half-siblings of the child.

MM Boycott Backfires, Gay Dad's Charity Gets Windfall
(EDGE) You'd be hard pressed to find any family with LGBT parents to owe hate group media watchdog organization One Million Moms (OMM) a debt of gratitude. And yet, it happened. A proverbial "Christmas miracle" has happened for fledgling charity Comfort Cases. The organization which works to support foster kids, was co-founded by Rob Scheer, one of the gay dads at the center of OMM's boycott of American Girl Doll and their parent company Mattel. The OMM boycott called out American Girl for "promoting sin" by featuring a story the Scheer's African American daughter which they saw as "pushing the homosexual agenda to children." The story of OMM bullying a little girl over her adoptive parents sexuality sparked outrage from all major media outlets, including Fox News. As a result of the boycott and media coverage, the Scheer's foster kid-related charity Comfort Cases, which provides backpacks filled with essentials for foster kids, received an influx of donations from all over the world culminating in a 300 percent increase in revenue. Thanks to OMM's bigotry, the holidays will be a little brighter this year for hundreds of foster kids who benefit from Comfort Cases. The organization's holiday packing party assembled 500 more cases than the previous year, a 70 percent increase. The total number of cases collected and distributed for year-end 2015 topped 10,000 - 4,000 more than 2014, an increase of 65 percent.

(EDGE) Men on Grindr are looking to hookup or meet with other men. But, did you ever ask yourself, what Grindr is looking for? Apparently, the gay hookup app is looking to become a brand, and just signed with one of the biggest fashion public relations company around: PR Consulting, WWD reports. PR Consulting represents major fashion houses like Dior, Rick Owens and Versace, but now can add Grindr to its lists of clients. The company announced it will be handling all of Grindr's public relations "effective immediately." While some may find themselves questioning the move, PR Consulting's confounders, Pierre Rougher and Sylvie Picquet-Damesme, said working with the app is an opportunity for fashion brands to reach a large audience. "When we were first approached by Grindr, we thought it was a fascinating project to
be a part of. Joel is passionate about Grindr for Equality and we feel very strongly about putting forth a positive message to the LGBTQ community," the cofounders told WWD. "It might seem surprising to some in the fashion community that we would take Grindr on as a client, but this is a very large platform with more than seven million users worldwide and one million users engaged every second on Grindr. "It would be foolish to think that the fashion, lifestyle, beauty and luxury industries would not view this as an incredible platform to reach an influential, potential consumer," they added. Interestingly enough, Paper magazine points out Simkhai's brother, Jonathan Simkhai, is a rising womenswear designer who was named one of the three winners of Vogue's esteemed Fashion Fund at the 2015 CDFA Awards. Grindr's public relations needs was previously handled in-house.
(EDGE) A man from Brighton, Mich., was sentenced to six months in jail Thursday after having sexual encounters with a then-15-yearold teen he met on Grindr, the Detroit Free Press reports. Prosecution wanted Alex Peter Benedict, 24, jailed for a year, saying the sentence "was a fair recommendation in light of his conduct." But Benedict's defense attorney argued for less jail time, noting Benedict thought the person he was meeting on the gay hookup app would be an adult. The Detroit Free Press reports that in criminal law, strict liability states a defendant can be convicted even if he was genuinely ignorant of an element, such as age. Judge Michael P. Hatty agreed that strict liability was the issue. According to Michigan law, a teen under 16 cannot legally give consent to a sexual encounter.
Benedict was sentenced under the state's Holmes Youthful Trainee Act. He will also serve three years’ probation with the first six months in the county jail for third-degree criminal sexual conduct, accosting a child for immoral purposes and using a computer to commit the crime. Under the act, Benedict will not have a public criminal record if he successfully completes the probation. Benedict was one of four men who separately "connected with" the teen boy via Grindr, police said, according to the Detroit Free Press. The alleged encounters occurred in January and March and they were reported to the authorities by a family member of the teen, who is now 16. The three other men were also charged. Their cases are currently moving through the local courts, the newspaper notes.

lgbtqia bites Lesbian
L
reaL LesBians TaLk ‘LesBian’ porn (SFGN) Widely regarded as the most popular type of porn, mainstream lesbian porn is also much maligned for typically being created by and for straight men. Criticized for being unrealistic and scripting scenes for the straight male aesthetic, filled with empty gestures and impractical positions, (scissoring anyone?) critiquing lesbian porn is becoming almost as popular as the porn itself. A new clip from Buzzfeed (bit.ly/1PV7oJf) features lesbians, with score cards, sampling a few genres of fetish porn which happened to carry lesbian in the title. Scenarios include taboo (sisters), watersports, and flipping. The scenes were judged on storyline, level of foreplay, “turned on-ness,” “nail fakeness” (ouch), and overall believability. “Real Lesbians React to Lesbian Porn,” (youtu.be/PJvYprLDcRs) calls out the use of straight girls in lesbian porn, who apparently fail when it comes to the nail fakeness, level of foreplay (limited repertoire), and believability categories. Read as: much simulated fellatio and heavy penetration for a bunch of women who allegedly aren’t into the d.
The general consensus being anyone with real time experience comes away from these videos more confused, amused, and grossed out (there’s some business that goes on with a stiletto heel) than actually turned on. Besides the obvious comedic value that the genre offers, the concern is more about representing lesbian sex in a way that’s just off-putting for women. Especially when the latest data from Pornhub suggests that women are 132 percent more likely to search for lesbian porn than men are. For a genre that makes so much money for the industry, it might be time to reconsider the audience and bring a little authenticity into the fantasy.

The march was the culmination of a week’s worth events in support of Hagan, 19 who was removed from her position as prayer group leader after revealing she was dating another woman, the Star Tribune reports. Classmate Marisa Tejeda organized the rallies on behalf of Hagan under the tag #istandwithnikki. School officials have declined protestors’ demands, asking that the school permit a gay support group on campus. Concordia is affiliated with the Lutheran Church. “We as a church-related school have a biblical view of sexuality,” said Tom Ries, university president, and also a minister. “That’s still the position of the church even [with] the cultural changes that the society is going through. That doesn’t mean we don’t love and appreciate people who are in samesex relationships.” Hagan, raised Catholic, was one of the coordinators of the weekly prayer group,
908. Upon sharing her relationship status on Facebook, Hagan was asked to resign by the group’s president. “Most of the time, people do a really good job of living well together, but from time to time we get these bumps in the road,” he said. “This is one of the bigger bumps we’ve had in five years,” Ries told the Star Tribune. He also said that he is working on adding sexual orientation to the school’s nondiscrimination policy. Tejeda hopes that the protests will help bring awareness and sensitivity to the campus. “We just want a safe place for queer students to come together,” she said.

After some counseling, both siblings are planning for gender reassignment surgery. Gavin will undergo surgery to remove his breasts while Rai already underwent a procedure to make her face more feminine. "People ask me what I've lost, but I don't feel that I've lost anything. I have my son and daughter the way they should be," Beth told Good Housekeeping. Rai and Gavin's father Russ is also supportive, telling the magazine he always wanted a boy and a girl. "As it so happened, we did have one of each - just in a different order than we originally thought," he said.

(EDGE) A brother and sister from Connecticut detail their journey after both coming out as transgender in a lengthy new article from Good Housekeeping. In the profile piece published last week, Beth McGarrity, the mother of Rai and Gavin, explained her children's experiences growing up trans. The siblings' parents said they knew their children were different but were concerned about Rai's depression. Beth said officials from Rai's school threatened to expel her after Rai, 20, used the girls' bathroom. But while the McGarritys were worrying about Rai, Gavin (born Aly) was struggling with her gender as well. Gavin, 17, was a tomboy growing up and after researching transgender online, he realized he was born as the wrong gender. Gavin came out to his parents first, just days before he turned 15. He initially told Rai and then his mother. Beth said she was shocked by the news but was accepting. "I'll support you no matter what," she told Gavin. A month later, Rai came out as trans too.

(SFGN) A now separated couple identified only as Michelle and Kyle appeared on Dr. Phil to discuss co-parenting their intersex child Aubrey, now age four. At Aubrey’s birth the couple says they consulted with doctors and decided upon surgery to make Aubrey biologically female, the Daily Mail reports. In the segment, called “Mama's Little Boy or Daddy's Little Girl: Identity Confusion or Brainwashing?” Michelle says that Aubrey now identifies as a boy, and Kyle believes that Aubrey should be a girl. The segment focuses on the differences in the couple’s view of gender expression. While Kyle and his new wife Brittany believing that Aubrey has an affinity for “girls’” clothes and toys, Michelle chooses to cut Aubrey’s to cut Aubrey’s hair short, like a boys and dress them in “boys’ clothes.” At this point actions on both side appear less about the child’s gender identity and more on a binary viewpoint of how gender is expressed. Regardless of the way it was approached, the segment draws attention to two important issues, the practice of performing gender assignment surgery on infants, and how to
talk to children about their gender identity or expression. Stores like Target eliminated gender classifications from children’s toys and clothing all together. And many public and private businesses have replaced or supplemented their gendered restrooms for gender neutral, or all gender bathrooms. And while these changes resulted from an increased level of trans visibility, it has added benefits for those born intersex, and those who are gender fluid.

What am I doing wrong?’” He told his therapist about his thoughts, and he said something that Wolff said he’d never forget. “He said, ‘If you decide that you’re gay and one day you send me a Christmas card, and it has you and another man on it, I’ll be happy for you, but I’ll always know that that wasn’t the best for you,’” Wolff confided. He said he realized that his unhappiness stemmed from the fact that he believed he was imperfect and that he could never be content unless he worked harder enough to change himself. “It was harmful and could’ve been more harmful if I’d stayed with the treatment longer,” he said. “Not to mention the financial aspect. It was expensive and didn’t even work.” \The new study would be helpful primarily for providers working with families who might be distressed by a child’s identity, said Kennedy. It would also be helpful for families themselves. Wolff said that he thinks that helping families is top priority. “My hope would be that working with family and parents to find ways not to reject their children and still be consistent with their religious beliefs,” he said. Kennedy said the administration’s objective is to educate providers who are unsure of how to help a family in distress. He hopes that the report can serve as a resource
to inform the public. Samantha Ames, #BornPerfect Campaign Coordinator, said she believes the findings of the study are groundbreaking, especially for transgender youth. “The research and clinical expertise makes clear that conversion therapy for LGBTQ youth is ineffective and very likely harmful,” she said. She said because parents put their children into therapy because they love them and think that it’s the best option, public education is the best way to combat conversion therapy. That’s what she hopes to do with the #BornPerfect campaign, which began in June 2013 with the goal of ending conversion therapy in the U.S. in five years. Currently, conversion therapy is banned in four countries. People involved in the campaign work on bills to prohibit licensed mental health providers from treating patients under 18 years old. They send bills to court and speak to communities, allowing survivors to speak at the meetings. The issue has gone from one largely unknown by much of the population to something that has become an issue at the forefront of LGBT equality, Ames said. “We’re not going to end it by passing a law in every state or court case in every jurisdiction” she said. “We’re going to end it by stopping a client base for the industry by showing that this is not the right way to do right for their children.”

“You see these relationships start to form because they’re in the same boat and it’s not something a lot of people will understand,” Ranck said. “There’s a lot of judgement from other parents to these parents. Especially the young ones.” So that’s why SOFFA needed – to focus on a trans person’s significant others. The group will have meetings in which the members break up into groups of parents and groups of partners. Ranck notes the differences faced by each relationship as those with trans children face hormonal questions and distinguishing youth and teenage behavior between the set of issues specific to trans youth. Those members that are loved ones of someone who’s trans will speak out about dating and sex, sharing what it’s like to date a trans person in light of society and in coming out to their own loved ones about their relationship. Besides a network of emotional strength, SOFFA provides direction for logistics of trans support as well. If clients are in need of legal services, need recommendation for hormone replacement therapy, gender marker changes, and focusing on the housing and employment violations faced by Trans individuals. SOFFA also focuses on the educational
aspect of transgender rights and eliminating some of the misconceptions and stereotypes the community faces as national discussions about trans existence begin to happen and the nation wakes up to the intersectionality of gender identity, sexual orientation, and gender expression. Although South Florida is described as accepting of unconventional lifestyles, with Human Rights Campaign’s documented deaths from Transgender violence as nearby as Miami, it’s a discussion SOFFA is starting at home. “We meet anyone where they are, so it’s not like you come to SOFFA and you have to be completely accepting in order to come to SOFFA,” Ranck said. ”You can come to SOFFA and if you are really struggling with loving your kid because they’re trans and you don’t understand and you hate it or you really like someone who’s Trans but you don’t know if you can get over that, you can be in any stage of acceptance in order to come to SOFFA. It’s not like you’re gonna be shunned because you’re not 100 percent loving right away.”

WriTers reTreaT offers neW opporTuniTies Nicole Wiesenthal
L
ambda Literary has announced their new faculty for their queer writer retreat, bringing back another chance for LGBT writers to strengthen their skills, build connections and get published. The retreat this year, which will run from July 24 to July 31, will feature authors like Andrew Holleran, who wrote “Dancer from the Dance,” and Robert O’Hara who won the NAACP Best Director Award. It will be another chance for eager writers of all ages to practice their skills with the best. Tony Valenzuela, the executive director of Lambda Literary, said two of the biggest changes in the event, other than the new faculty, are the increased number of applicants and increased number of workshops. The organization now offers five faculty led workshops in fiction, nonfiction, genre fiction (this year, “young adult fiction”), poetry and playwriting. Valenzuela said that originally only fiction, nonfiction and poetry workshops were offered. “We also get many more applications (hundreds) as the Retreat has grown in popularity and prestige,” he said. “It’s become more competitive.” The Retreat has also been opened up to the past students who can return as “Writers in Residence” and work on a project without faculty led workshops. Valenzuela said usually three to four writers in residence attend each year. Bryan Borland attended the event in 2015, and he said he’d do it again, if he weren’t so busy because of the opportunity last year’s event presented him. “While at my retreat, I met Fellow Marcos L. Martinez who is the editor for Stillhouse Press,” he explained. “He convinced me to send my manuscript-in-progress, DIG, to him after the retreat, and it was accepted by Stillhouse for publication in September, 2016.” With the new book recently published, he
said he will be spending his free time on a book tour. He said the event changed his life, but it also presented a teaching moment. “It was like being in an alternate, wonderful reality,” he said. “It also taught me about the diversity of our own community and how I can be more inclusive of that diversity both as a writer and publisher.” The retreat, Valenzuela shared, is actually the only queer writers’ residency in the country, and it’s open to people of all ages and backgrounds. “At Lambda’s retreat, the faculty and students are queer, and the writers spend less time ‘explaining’ queerness, which happens far too often in other workshops,” he said. Borland said this helped him a lot. “It’s worth attending just to see how your creative side reacts, what ideas appear, what happens when your defenses are down when all of your peers have shared a little bit of your own experience,” he said, “when there’s no need to ‘come out,’ when there’s no need for explanation.” The new staff, Andrew Holleran (fiction), Joy Ladin (poetry), Robert O’Hara (playwriting), Benjamin Alire Saenz (young adult fiction) and Sarah Schulman (nonfiction) will help the writers grown. “The students are mentored by successful, leading LGBT authors,” Valenzuela said. He said the retreat is also a place where writers find community, leaving the week with about sixty new friends, many of whom they can count on for support throughout their writing careers. Borland said this was true for him. “With every new poem I write, I hear the voices of my workshop group in my head,” he said. “I hear Paul Tran saying, ‘We’ve got to be careful with our metaphors.’ I hear Kazim Ali saying, ‘All poems are performance poems.’ I walked out of that workshop with twelve new perspectives. And I apply those perspectives to everything I write.”
Applications for the retreat are open until Jan. 16, 2016. You can apply at the Lambda Literacy website. Scholarships are also offered.

Our Hen House Non-profit connects gay rights to animal rights David-Elijah Nahmod
C
ould there be a connection to Stonewall, marriage equality and animal rights? "Our Hen House," a non-profit founded in 2010 by happily married lesbian couple Mariann Sullivan and Jasmin Singer, eloquently argues that there is. "Mariann and I have been together for eight years, married for two and a half," Singer told SFGN. "Our Hen House exists because of a need Mariann and I saw to mainstream the movement to end the exploitation of animals. The world is changing for animals. There is more awareness of their plight than ever before and delicious vegan food is now everywhere – though sometimes you have to seek it out." Veganism – the following of a plant based diet completely free of meat, fish or dairy, is said to have many health benefits. But for Sullivan and Singer, following a vegan diet has a much deeper cause. "The number of animals exploited and killed, all for completely unnecessary reasons, is staggering," Singer explained. "It's roughly 286 land animals in the USA every second, 24/7 in the USA alone. These animals live out their entire lives in absolute hell. The industry, and all too often the mainstream media, are literally banking on us not caring enough to look. Most people don't." But most people, Singer ads, don't want animals to be treated cruelly. "Mariann and I are no exception," she said. "Once we kept looking, we realized it was a lot more dismal than we thought." And so the couple set out to create educational media to raise awareness regarding the realities of animal cruelty by the meat and dairy industries. They're not waiting for mainstream media to call, they're doing it themselves, highlighting people from many different walks of life who have become activists for this cause. "Famous and not," Singer said. "In the arts, in the legal world, in academia, in the kitchen.
This allows us and our listeners to see how replicable their efforts to change the world for animals are. Given the horrible ways farmed animals are treated in animal agriculture, combined with the vast amount of vegan food widely available, it was a no-brainer." Singer, who was once overweight, said that she lost 100 pounds on a vegan diet. "We always encourage those who are veganskeptical to open their minds and their palates and start with something that is attainable to them, maybe three vegan days a week," Singer suggested. "You will probably find that you eat vegan food more often than you realize, and that your non-vegan foods are very easily veganizable –and delicious." There is a definite parallel between veganism, animal rights and LGBT rights, according to Singer. "The rationalizations used to oppress any group, be they LGBT, animals, or insert-theblank-marginalized-group-here, are often the same," Singer said. "Groups that are considered 'less than' for whatever reason are often 'othered,’ and animals are no exception. I will never claim to know the story of anyone who has been oppressed – the only story we really know is our own. But I feel like it’s my responsibility to try to live in an ethical continuum with my beliefs." "Our Hen House" has posted "Coming Out For Animals," a short video, on YouTube which serves as an introduction to the organization and its cause. "We made the video short because we wanted people to watch it," Singer said. "Though we don't have plans for a longer video at the moment, the issues discussed in "Coming Out For Animals" are frequently part of the dialogue on the weekly "Our Hen House" podcast – so there are indeed many hours of listening that anyone interested in these topics, and several other topics revolving around animal rights, can explore."

T
his is not the world I bargained for. You either. But don't give up. Don't ever give up. I mean, it's the holiday season, and we should be celebrating. Damn, I am going to. I am going to see more Broadway plays. I am going to walk my dogs more. I am going to write a few more articles, call a few more friends and swim in the ocean more often. I am not going to let terrorism define my life, though it has shaken my soul. I have to be realistic. It's never been all roses. My grandparents faced Nazis and a Holocaust. My father fought in the European theater on D Day, and my brother was born just in time for a nuclear bomb to decimate Japan. As a teenager, I saw a president assassinated and the Vietnam War claim friends and classmates. Seems like every time I looked up our government of old white men was sending the young off to die, somewhere, some place, from Cambodia to Cazak-a somethingstan. Always in the name of democracy. But the violence is everywhere. My own country's citizens kill off each other more quickly than terrorists or foreign wars. None of it makes sense, not John Lennon's murder 35 years ago today, or the shooting at Planned Parenthood last week- if you can remember that anymore. Thanks to San Bernardino, it's yesterday's news. But I remember a sniper with a long gun going on the roof of a building in Texas 40 years ago and killing 27 students. The killing has never stopped. The World Trade Center. France. Russian
passenger jets. Flight 800. Elementary school kids at Sandy Hook. It's just a collage of random death. Tsunamis, cyclones, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes. I mean, there are enough natural disasters to ruin the day. Do we really need to add to that? From mad unabombers to John Gacy to Jim Jones cults, have we not endured madness at every corner ? The evening news in every city documents innocents shot, murders committed, and people run over while walking their dogs or bicycling near their homes. The stories are so commonplace they get sandwiched into the morning traffic report: "Oh, if you are headed down I-95 southbound, avoid 123rd Street. We have a fatality. But drive safe and have a great day." How did we make it this far? This is just crazy. We need to appreciate every borrowed moment, every waking minute, every breath of fresh air. We need to stop telling other people how to live, what to believe, and which religion to follow. We need to open our eyes, and promote life, not lunacy. More than anything, we need to respect each other and our differences. We should celebrate our diversity and not diminish it. Join a gym. Take a canoe ride. Have a barbecue. Enter a Bike Ride. Help out a neighbor. Assist a senior citizen. Enroll in a class. Lose some weight. Eat an ice cream cone. Tour the Grand Canyon. Scuba in the Bahamas. Join a chorus. Live your life relentlessly. Protect what you love. These groups that want to kill others in the name of Allah have thrown gays off rooftops, but they are killing everyone wantonly, from Christians to children. populations of Muslims, wrecking historic museums and essentially destroying civilization as we know it. They are slaughtering our humanity. But enough about Donald Trump and his minions. In the final analysis, we have to do better. It is, as I said, the 35th anniversary of John Lennon's senseless death. I choose to still celebrate his life, and I will live mine so that I can imagine each day a better tomorrow for all of us. I urge you to do so as well. Do not succumb to fear.

Strive to seek a newer world. As George Bernard Shaw once wrote, "Some people see things as they are and ask, 'Why?' I see things as they can be, and ask 'Why not?' It's a healthier and happier way to live. Woodstock may have been an unfulfilled dream for those of us in our 60's, but it was a dream worth living then, and it still is now. All we were saying is 'give peace a chance.' It made sense then, and still does now. Happy Holidays.

Can The seLf-respeCTinG Gay VoTe repuBLiCan?
Tony Adams
I
n the old days, gay voters could easily be Democrats or Republicans because both parties were anti-gay with neither offering a refuge from hate. Now, with marriage equality and other rights having been achieved largely because of elected Democrats’ response to gay activism, choices for gay voters have changed significantly. Because we have been given a place at one table but not at the other, registering and voting Democrat seems like a no-brainer if we are to sustain our newly won equality in the face of ongoing threats from Republican candidates. Therefore, it always surprises me when gay acquaintances unmask themselves to me as Republicans, arguing that gay rights are but a single issue that should not automatically drive the gay voter into the Democratic camp. Republican-leaning gays need to be subjected to a strong microscope. Does their argument make sense? Can a selfrespecting gay person vote Republican in 2016? What matters most to a gay person may be made apparent by his or her political leaning. If maximizing your wealth trumps your desire for marital bliss, you may convince yourself that casting a Republican vote may help you skirt taxes. If your religious convictions make you prize the right to life for the unborn over the reproductive rights of women, you may convince yourself that casting a Republican vote will make your God smile and mark you down for a larger house in heaven. If you suspect that electing Democrats means inflating governmental regulation, and that electing Republicans means protecting your right to shoot anything in your backyard, you may convince yourself that voting Republican will ensure some sort of woodsy mobility unknown to most Americans since before the Civil War. If white faces speaking English give you comfort no matter what words they utter, while swarthy faces speaking other languages make you distressed rather than curious to learn, you may convince yourself that voting Republican will Anglicize the nation and end the constant discomfort of diversity. You see? I know the arguments. It is easy to put on blinders that allow us to see only what concerns us most while blocking inconvenient issues that disturb our sleep to a lesser degree. Keep your blinders on long enough and they become embedded in your temples. Your willingness to accept mistreatment because of your sexuality morphs from
character flaw to ornament, from weakness to trophy, and finally from countenanced to boldly proclaimed. Even if you are inclined to vote Republican because you lack the genetic inscription that makes other gays protest oppression, you might want to re-evaluate the future of your investment in the Grand Old Party. The fact that the entire country watches the clown car of Republican presidential candidates with a zest traditionally reserved for professional wrestling ought to embarrass you. The fact that those self-seeking candidates are rarely if ever described as wise or inspired ought to concern you. The most shocking revelation made during the Republican debates was not anything those candidates said, but the fact that there were no true, heroic and trustworthy leaders on those stages. No brilliant Republicans – and I still believe they are not entirely extinct – stepped forward, leaving the game to ambulancechasers. In other words, the smart folks have found the exits and are using them. In conversation with gay Republicans, this is usually the point at which they get defensive by throwing the specter of the Democratic presidential candidates in my face. I acknowledge their flaws. My calm response is usually to suggest that we try to construct our ideal candidate, and then pick an existing one who most closely matches our desires and needs. Here is an A-Z description of a dream candidate. The items are phrased to emphasize issues of interest to many of my gay friends. Obviously, they are not constructed objectively. My aim is to show that even if you are not a “one-issue gay,” it’s almost impossible to justify voting Republican. Put a “D” next to each element that more likely describes a current Democrat presidential candidate and an “R” next to the items that more likely describe a Republican presidential candidate.
Keep your blinders on long enough and they become embedded in your temples.

My own results are 18 “D”s vs. 7 “R”s. This means that I am personally exempt from the accusation that I will vote for a Democrat just because of my desire for gay rights. The construction and phrasing of this exercise is bound to infuriate many. It’s biased, slanted and tilted. Let me know which part you find most annoying or perhaps accurate. Even an irritating dialogue is better than letting our collective gay Floridian psyche go to sleep when our votes are most needed.

dear farook, Hey how does it feel to be totally betrayed and cheated and so far off base? You thought that spreading terror and killing innocent people would open the gates of “paradise" for you. Say what? No red carpet? Oh shit! No 17 virgins waiting for you? No Allah or Mohamed greeting you? Really? It was bullshit wasn't it? Your ship of horror sunk. Do you realize you have been serving an ideology of pure assholery? Now what? The only good thing is that at least we have one less asshole in the world. Because you and your cohorts in NISIS, yes NISIS, the NON Islamic State, are a sad, frightening I will grant you that, bunch of psychopaths, sociopaths and predators who use violence to control others to satisfy your own feelings of uselessness and inferiority. By now you should know the bad news: “God does not exist." Too bad it is too late for you to enjoy the good news: “you don't need him." But be sure of one thing, like Hitler, the remaining bunch of still living
excrements flying the black flag will never succeed in their delusional madness. I am glad you are dead, especially because you were still young enough to spawn some more rabid animals out of your loins. Talking of which what about your shrouded wife, the bitch that died with you? What would have been her reward in your pseudo religious afterlife? Certainly not 17 Virgins, she was not a man after all, and women have no rights in your twisted fucked up world. But maybe she was delusional as you were or perhaps she was a lesbian hoping to score 17 virgins. Glad she is gone and she is in hell were all of you belong. No other "Damien" will come out of her womb either. Invoking "God" to serve as your escrow agent is just diluting the "God" brand by asking him to be the muscle behind your small time fucked up ideology. It just helps you bypass logic. But logic is too big a word for you to process. I instead think. That's why I am an atheist, because nothing screws up faith more than a good thought. Of course Noahlike stories comfort people, but so do Disney tales, normal people just don't base their lives on them.
The only good thing is that at least we have one less asshole in the world.

You and your Mullahs, or any religious zealot for that matter, are a bunch of charlatans, swindlers who claim to have some sort of direct line to heaven. You are just spewing verbal garbage. You thought religion gave you the right to judge and kill others. You were so wrong. See? You didn't even make it to 30. There is no place like nowhere because religion, any religion, is the motherhood of bad ideas. And you were afraid because the truth is that without God you are forced to be free, and that's a scary thought for a low life like you. God died the very moment we discovered that we made him up to flee our fear of death. But at least you are dead and that's good riddance. I do hope you felt excruciating pain after each bullet hit your body, the pain that those 14 people in San Bernardino and beyond felt when you shot them in cold blood. Burn in hell baby burn.

et me ask you, readers, if you feel I’m going a little outlets would rather interview the candidates in the far when I suggest that I’m frightened that some hopes of getting a news story rather than focusing on the people running for the highest office in the land are incidents themselves. As journalists, we cannot allow these encouraging mob action like it has not be seen since 1938 candidates off the hook. Let me explore how we can keep Europe? the pressure on them. To justify that statement, I’d refer you to the recent Mr. Trump, why was a man attacked at your rally? Why attack at the Colorado Planned Parenthood and the suspect didn’t you try to stop it? Why did you encourage it? Why in that violent incident, who allegedly did you say it might have been justified? Will you tone down your attacks of this import connected to political campaigns. Now on Planned Parenthood? Now that you are at issue. I must admit I’m sensitive to this issue: have disavowed this act, will you tell your I’m Jewish, and a similar wave of attacks followers that promoting misinformation is happened on a much larger scale in equal to violence? And will you admit that Germany when a certain man was running for office, a you were misinformed about Planned Parenthood? name I’m told you shouldn’t invoke — which leads me to Again, we need reporters and journalists who do their ask, “are we censoring the accounts of these outrageous, homework, and then follow through. Recently, one of those Sunday-morning political shows actually did this. “Meet The Press” with Chuck Todd actually followed the issue with a panel discussion, while all the others, especially ABC, gave the same drivel coverage, or worse, allow the candidate to dictate the image their campaigns desired. We need to stop taking this as a joke. We in the United States already elected a former actor as president; are we now ready to elect a reality star, or a fired, and failed, CEO? One is currently at the top of the Republican polls, the other at the bottom. And those in between? That prospect frightens me. Yes, I’m a Democrat, and you can say some bad things about the Democratic candidates, but at least they don’t inspire mob justice, mass deportations, religious discrimination and closing houses of worship. Do those issues sound familiar? They were used by that little man whose name I can’t invoke. (This column was written before the horror's of San Bernadino, and since many of those candidates I've listed above have made anti-Islamic statements, blaming a complete religious group. Imagine if we portrayed any other religion by the acts of those who have taken that religion to the extreme.)

presents LGBT december birthdays Visit the Stonewall National Museum & Archives Gallery 2157 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors to learn more about our gay heritage and those who paved the way—through activism, sacrifice and courage—to give us a better and freer life.
Born on December 16, 1899, in a village near London, Noël Coward first sang and danced in an amateur concert at age seven. By 12, Coward appeared in West End productions, including Peter Pan. Although Coward’s heritage was poor in class-conscious England, an older gay artist introduced him to Mrs. Astley Cooper, who often invited Noël to her country estate. There he observed the mores of sophisticated society as well as the maids and butlers, aspects he used later in his plays. At 21, he wrote and starred in I Leave It to You, which had a short run in the West End. Acclaim arrived when he wrote, directed and starred in The Vortex (1924), about upper-class drug abuse. Soon after, Coward began a ten-year romance with Jack Wilson, a American stockbroker. Coward later had a long relationship with actor Graham Payn. In addition to composing numerous songs for revues, Coward also had success with his plays Hay Fever (1925), Private Lives (1930), Cavalcade (1931), Present Laughter (1942) and Blithe Spirit (1942). Design For Living (1933) centered on a bisexual male couple involved with a woman. Coward’s musicals include Bittersweet (1929), Sail Away (1960) and The Girl Who Came to Supper (1963). Coward died of a stroke on March 26, 1973, at his home in Jamaica.
Marlene Dietrich was born on December 27, 1901, in Berlin. In 1923, she married producer Rudolf Sieber, who helped her get a role in her first film, Tragedy of Love. They had a daughter then later separated but never divorced. Hollywood director Josef von Sternberg cast her in The Blue Angel (1930), which made her a star. Dietrich was nominated for an Academy Award for her next film, von Sternberg’s Morocco (1930), in which she sang wearing top hat and tails and kissed a woman. She made four more films with von Sternberg: Dishonored (1931), Shanghai Express (1932), The Scarlet Empress (1934) and The Devil Is a Woman (1935). She appeared in Destry Rides Again (1939) with Jimmy Stewart, three films with John Wayne and Billy Wilder’s Witness for the Prosecution (1957). Although she usually played the femme fatale, Dietrich often wore trousers and masculine fashions on-screen and off. Later in life she performed her cabaret act worldwide singing fan favorites “Falling in Love Again” and “Lili Marleen.” Dietrich is rumored to have had affairs with several of her male co-stars as well as with Frank Sinatra, Edith Piaf and writer Mercedes de Acosta. For decades she denied knowing Greta Garbo, whom she called “a peasant,” but they had a youthful fling in Berlin. Dietrich died on May 6, 1992, in Paris, France.

Born in Philadelphia on December 22, 1938, Martin Sherman saw his first stage production at age six. After watching actors Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne on stage, he joined a children’s theatrical group that toured Pennsylvania in Snow White. He also took an annual trip to New York to see plays. Sherman’s early plays—Passing By, Cracks and Rio Grande—were originally staged by Playwrights Horizons in New York. A drama about the persecution of gays in Nazi Germany and their incarceration in concentration camps, Sherman’s Bent premiered in London with Ian McKellen in 1979. Later that year, it opened with Richard Gere on Broadway and was nominated for a Tony for Best Play. Bent has been produced in more than 45 countries. Sherman wrote several other plays and screenplays as well as the book for the American version of The Boy From Oz (2003), about singer Peter Allen. In 1980, Sherman relocated to London. Although openly gay, he is discreet about his personal life. He said in The Advocate in 2000: “At the time I wrote Bent it was important to declare yourself as a gay writer. It seems to me that we have now reached this point, which I think is extremely healthy, where I can write about anything.”

Trump is a CanCer in our demoCraCy Jason Parsley
Like many progressives, liberals and Democrats I was giddy when billionaire Donald Trump entered the presidential race. He was sure to shake things up on the Republican side and thoroughly amuse us all in the process. Well six months later he has now delivered on his promise to shake things up but monthby-month he’s become less amusing. His angry rhetoric has veered from merely divisive to dangerous. And he’s become a cancer, not just in the Republican race, but throughout our democracy. Some of his outrageous and dangerous statements have been to refer to Mexicans as rapists; call for a ban on all Muslims entering the country; creating a database for Muslim Americans; comparing Syrian refugees to a Trojan horse; applauding the folks who beat up a black protestor at his rally; and even going so far to hint that President Obama is in bed with the terrorists saying “there is something going on with him that we don’t know about.” Trump’s fear mongering reminds me of Pastor Martin Niemöller’s famous poem about the rise of the Nazis. Here’s my slightly revised version. First Trump came for the Mexicans, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Mexican. Then Trump came for the Syrian refugees, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Syrian refugee. Then Trump came for the immigrants, and I did not speak out— Because I was not an immigrant. Then Trump came for the Muslims, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Muslim. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. Do we really think that Trump will stop at Muslims? What group will he use to scare people with next? The transgender community comes
to mind. Right wing fanatics did it recently in Houston with ads featuring predators dressing up as women in order to come after little girls. Will Trump use a similar attack? Why not? He has nothing to lose. If he doesn’t win the presidency he goes back to be being a bombastic billionaire reality star. But each time he comes after another group we lose – we all lose. And unlike Trump, who can simply go back to life as normal, we will have to live in the new normal he’s created for us. It’s easy to dismiss Trump as (insert adjective), or his policies as not being “serious,” as former Florida Governor Jeb Bush said. And while that may be true, his rhetoric may very well have serious consequences on the Republican Party and our democracy. Most other presidential candidates have condemned Trump’s latest policy proposal of banning all Muslims from entering the U.S., but not all Republicans have done so. Presidential candidates former Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz both stopped short of condemning Trump. Former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, would only criticize Trump’s tone – not his proposal. Sen. Jeff Sessions, an Alabama Republican, refused to directly address Trump’s comments. Ann Coulter, a prominent far right pundit and author, showed her excitement for Trump’s latest policy by tweeting out: “Add in every other kind of immigrant and it's perfect!” and “My best birthday gift! Donald Trump Calls For ‘Complete Shutdown’ of Muslim Entry to U.S.” That’s why it’s more important than ever for the LGBT community speak out on behalf of our fellow humans whether they are Mexicans, immigrants, Syrian refugees or whomever the next group Trump decides to go after. We know oppression. We’ve been singled out. So while these other groups may differ from us we must stand together in the face of bigotry and hatred. I am no longer giddy with Trump in the race. I am scared – not of Muslims and immigrants, but of what he is doing to our democracy. 12.9.2015 •

The rememBranCe WaLk shouLd Be a WaLk of reCoGniTion

s I was walking down Wilton Drive this World AIDS Day holding the hand of the man I love I was dismayed at the conversations and lack of respect that was presented by the other walkers in the crowd. Perhaps I am cynical or perhaps I am just a soft heart but the Remembrance Walk should be a walk of recognition for those we have lost to HIV. It is a time to think of the here and now and the battle we still face in regards to providing/ maintaining healthcare for those infected with HIV, for reducing or eradicating the HIV stigma that permeates our society and keeps people from getting tested and into care. It is a time to come together in solidarity with the knowledge and understanding that we ALL play a part in bringing awareness to this disease and finding a way to not just control it but to eradicate it completely. Perhaps for the millennials it is different. They did not see or know the loss that some of us have known in the past years of this plaque. Perhaps they have not had to watch loved ones die a slow death (both physically and emotionally). I guess I am just focusing on the MANY people I have lost due to this horrible (and still very current) disease. I am not just talking about the people I have
lost in past years. I am speaking of the four friends I have lost within the last few months due to illness brought on by an oppressed immune system. I desperately needed something, some way to mourn the losses. To show the universe the respect and love I had for them. This was not what occurred. Instead I left feeling disconsolate and incomplete. I was also dismayed because in the past there were different events throughout the city, more recognition for World AIDS Day, and an effort to bring in people from all areas of the county. I did not see that this World AIDS Day. It seems that HIV/AIDS awareness is losing ground. Perhaps that is why there is still such a high rate of new infections? Awareness is necessary in providing education and testing to those who desperately need it. Anthony Johnson 20 Year Survivor of HIV

JanetUnbreakable Jackson
John Bata
A
few years ago when I was reaching the inevitable end of my thirties a friend suggested we take a visit to Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. I went along not expecting to enjoy the experience. It was my first time walking through the gates to the “magic kingdom” since probably the age of 10. After a life full of personal drama, living through inward and outward wars, I couldn’t help but focus on the lines that stretched on for days and the high ticket prices. As the sun set and the lights came up, something in the air and my soul shifted and I was taken back through the rabbit hole to a place or purity and joy. It was, yes, magical and liberating. I guess M.J. was on to something. Fittingly enough, the 3D spectacle, “Captain E.O.” starring Michael Jackson was playing every 15 minutes in Tomorrowland and people young and old were still lining up to see it. “Unbreakable” recaptures that childlike quality and inimitable Jackson magic that has been missing from the world of pop for some time now. Who better to do The King of Pop, than his sister who adored and idolized him? Here she reaches new levels as an artist and sounds more like her brother than ever before while still remaining true to herself. On “The Great Forever” and especially the exceptional “Broken Hearts Heal” Janet has incorporated his technique for accenting the end of phrases and has lowered her voice to eerily mimic his style and rhythmic flow, encapsulated in a sort of late ‘60s/early ‘70s Motown wash (“Dreamaker/Euphoria”) and smooth ‘90s r&b beats (“Can’t Get No Sleep”) while still feeling fresh, genuine and of the now. “Unbreakable” is very much a trademark Janet Jackson (fake shy laugh intact -- hat
tip Christopher S.) album, but more evolved and mature than anything from her past output. Her brother is present in spirit as well and it feels like they are doing cosmic duets throughout. It is no secret that it was a conscious choice of her and legendary producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to pay M.J. tribute with this album, subtly and figuratively through the complex melodies and lyrics. Here Jam & Lewis are on their A game. Throughout Unbreakable you can’t deny their superior production skills and ability to layer vocals creating a unique and euphoric experience. They also showcase their gift for orchestration on “After the Fall”, one of her best ballads to date. This is deep stuff. “Unbreakable” is not an album solely for children, but for the child in all of us, so it is accessible to all ages which is part of why the Jackson’s became a lasting worldwide phenomenon. On “Shoulda Known Better”, a future hit single -- if we are lucky -- she sings, “Why, why, why” which recalls M.J.’s Human Nature. I got goose bumps. At the end of this great track she sadly recalls her desire to change the world through her epiphany in the ‘80s, resulting in her “brilliant” idea for a peaceful utopia as she inwardly scolds, “Rhythm Nation was this dream. I guess next time I’ll know better,” as she chastises herself for being optimistic about the power her music had to change the world for the better. I believe from this effort that she still has time. Her music has done a lot of good for a lot of people already. Unbreakable is a fitting tribute to her great talent and that of her late brother. Larry kramer
(1935) is an American playwright, author, public health advocate, and LGBT rights activist. He wrote the screenplay for the 1969 film Women in Love and earned an Oscar nomination for his work. Kramer introduced a controversial and confrontational style in his 1978 novel Faggots. The book earned mixed reviews but emphatic denunciations from elements within the gay community for his onesided portrayal of shallow, promiscuous gay relationships in the 1970s. Kramer witnessed the spread of (AIDS) among his friends in 1980. He cofounded the Gay Men’s Health Crisis which has become the world's largest private organization assisting people living with AIDS. Kramer grew frustrated with bureaucratic paralysis and the apathy of gay men to the AIDS crisis, and wished to engage in further action than the social services GMHC provided. He expressed his frustration by writing a play titled The Normal Heart in 1985. His political activism continued with the founding of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) in 1987, an influential direct action protest organization with the aim of gaining more public action to fight the AIDS crisis. ACT UP has been widely credited with changing public health policy and the perception of people living with AIDS ,and raising awareness of HIV and AIDSrelated diseases.
aCT up (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) is an advocacy group formed in 1987 working to impact the lives of people with AIDS and the AIDS pandemic, to bring about legislation, medical research and treatment and policies to ultimately bring an end to the disease by mitigating loss of health and lives. ACT UP’s demonstrations in the late 1980s and early 1990s reflected the group’s outrage against a governing establishment that ignored HIV/AIDS as a national health crisis; that failed to secure funding for medical research, treatment, and education; that profited from inflated costs for therapeutic drugs; and that perpetuated homophobic misrepresentations of HIV and AIDS. “The normal heart” is a 2014 American drama television film written by Larry Kramer, based on his own 1985 play of same name. The film stars Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Alfred
Molina, Joe Mantello, , and Julia Roberts. The film depicts the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and 1984, as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks (Ruffalo), the founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group. Weeks prefers public confrontations to the calmer, more private strategies favored by his associates, friends, and closeted lover Felix Turner (Bomer). Their differences of opinion lead to arguments that threaten to undermine their shared goals.
anthony "Tony" kushner (1956) is an American playwright and screenwriter. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993 for his play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. He co-authored with Eric Roth the screenplay for the 2005 film Munich, and he wrote the screenplay for the 2012 film Lincoln, both critically acclaimed movies. For his work, he received a National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama in 2013. Kushner and his spouse Mark Harris, an editor of Entertainment Weekly and author of Pictures at a Revolution – Five Movies and the Birth of the New Hollywood, held a commitment ceremony in April 2003,the first same-sex commitment ceremony to be featured in the Vows column of The New York Times .In summer 2008 they were legally married at the city hall in Provincetown, Massachusetts. “angels in america: a Gay fantasia on national Themes” is a 1993 play in two parts by
American playwright Tony Kushner. The work won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Tony Award for Best Play, and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play. The play is a complex, often metaphorical, and at times symbolic examination of AIDS and homosexuality in America in the 1980s. Certain major and minor characters are supernatural beings (angels) or deceased persons (ghosts). The play contains multiple roles for several of the actors. Initially and primarily focusing on a gay couple in Manhattan, the play also has several other storylines, some of which occasionally intersect. The two parts of the play are separately presentable and entitled Millennium Approaches and Perestroika, respectively. The play has been made into a television miniseries, and an opera by Peter Eötvös.

'WhaT CoLor is your hoodie? essays on BLaCk Gay idenTiTy' by Jarrett Neal
Terri Schlichenmeyer
S
ome days, it seems as though you have SuperPowers.
That must be the explanation for being unseen. That’s why there are days when nobody looks at you. There’s no acknowledgment that you exist. You’re suddenly Invisible Man, and in the new book “What Color is Your Hoodie? Essays on Black Gay Identity” by Jarrett Neal, the reason is not so transparent. Born to a fourteen-year-old mother, raised in a household with an alcoholic grandfather, Jarrett Neal was in eighth grade when his gym class accidentally walked in on their coach, showering. It was Neal’s first glimpse of a naked man and it “ended my boyhood,” he says. He was well into college when he finally admitted to himself that he was attracted to men; still, the “daily taunts” from his more athletic, more self-confident peers and the absence of a father haunted him for many years. To counteract it, Neal joined a gym and worked out tirelessly, until he realized that he’d never have a body like HeMan. He was never going to make a living with his physique. Instead, Neal knew that he had to write. It was “write or die,” he says, though he’s been told that his style is “either too black or too gay” and he once assumed that “as a boy I wasn’t supposed to care about books…” Even so, he devoured the works of gay men – particularly those who were black. That voracity for books led to a teaching career. In his essays here, Neal discusses the dearth of gay black men in films and television, and he decries the lack of interest by white readers in the works of black authors. He looks at the sexuality of gay black men who, like most African American men, live under “sexual stereotypes”
$18.00 / higher in Canada 175 pages c.2015, Chelsea Station Editions that cause “a tremendous onus… to live up to…” He writes about black men (some, gay) who have made history and changed perceptions within their neighborhoods or industries. And as a black man married to a white man, he notes that racism within the gay community is as big a problem as it is anywhere else. Author Jarrett Neal is not shy. There’s no waffling inside this book, and nothing held back. Neal discusses gay porn as blithely as he does modern literature; he remembers his childhood with the same passion as he does coming out. Such power and force in writing serves to give readers – straight or gay – a solid understanding of the points he tries to make. We might laugh or raise our eyebrows but we also empathize or, as the case may be, sympathize. What mars this otherwise well-done collection of essays is its sloppiness. “What Color is Your Hoodie?” is riddled with misspellings and punctuation mistakes which, because of the frequency, almost made me want to quit this book too many times. If you can forgive that distraction, then this unusual book is a good read that may actually change minds. Truthful, blunt, and thoughtprovoking, regretful mistakes aside, “What Color is Your Hoodie?” should be seen.
Author Jarrett Neal is not shy. There’s no waffling inside this book, and nothing held back.

hile tweens continue to mourn the breakup of One Direction, there’s another boy band—well, string quartet—touring the country and they also have a legion of devoted fans. Violinists Edmund Bagnell and Chris Marchant, violist Trevor Wadleigh and cellist Daniel Shevlin are Well-Strung, the gay allmale string quartet, and they’re returning to South Florida next week with their holiday program, “A Well-Strung Christmas.” The group became an internet sensation with their musical mashups of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms with the contemporary hits of Madonna, Lady Gaga and Ke$ha, and headline a sellout annual residency in Provincetown, Mass. during the summer season. The foursome are all classically trained musicians, but according to Bagnell, they’re also “products of our generation,” seeking to bridge two musical worlds with their music. The group traveled to Rome in September and even performed at a rally for presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton this year. They landed that invitation after recording a music video entitled, “Chelsea’s Mom.” “A week later, we got asked to play at the rally,” said Bagnell. “We got to meet her, take some pictures and played our song. She talked about us for about an hour!” Their second album, released in early
October, landed Well-Strung on the classical, classical crossover and pop charts. Just last week, the group released a new music video track on YouTube, a signature interpretation of “Silent Night.” Bagnell’s lips are tight when it comes to the pieces they have planned for Broward and Kravis Center audiences. He’ll only admit the program contain plenty of their pop/classical medleys with “some surprising Christmas choices.” “Oh, they’re very much in the spirit of Well-Strung,” he said. “We’re pretty proud of what we came up with.” Audiences in New Orleans and Chicago loved the program, so he’s confident they will be a hit in South Florida, too. He will say that audiences who have seen them perform live in previous seasons will immediately appreciate the experience they’ve picked up on the road over the past couple of years. “We’re performing so regularly and in so many types of situations that we’re looser. That ‘looseness’ reveals our personalities a little bit more, so the audience gets to know us better, also,” he explained. In the meantime, the members of WellStrung are enjoying their jet-setting life and the adoring fans are nice, too. Don’t look for this boy band to break up any time soon.
Well-Strung presents “A Well Strung Christmas” at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale on Friday, Dec. 18 and the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach on Saturday, Dec. 19. Both shows begin at 8 p.m. For tickets, go to BrowardCenter.org and Kravis.org.

or Chris Rudisill, the new executive director of the Stonewall National Museum and Archives in Fort Lauderdale, the position is “the culmination of everything I’ve done in my career.” A North Carolina native, Rudisill began working in the museum industry for a short time after college, then wrote an LGBT column for “The Sun News” in Myrtle Beach, S.C., before settling in the Tampa Bay area for five years, where he served as executive director of St. Pete Pride and most recently, director of LGBT community center services for Metro Wellness and Community Centers. “I was a ‘voice’ for the community at the paper, worked ‘with’ the community at Pride and then worked ‘for’ the community (at the center),” he said. In this new position, he hopes to continue expanding the Stonewall Museum’s mission and outreach nationally, working for “the” LGBT community. During a telephone interview, in between packing boxes, he praised the museum’s board and outgoing executive director, David Jobin. “They’ve done a tremendous job getting Stonewall to where it is today—shaped it strategically and made it ready for the next step to become a national organization,” Rudisill explained. He plans to move the museum toward full accreditation, building a bigger national presence, launching a national membership program, growing the archives and, of course, finding new ways to tell the LGBT community’s story in the process.

D
irector Sean Baker’s latest film “Tangerine,” now available, garnered a great deal of attention when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2015. Shot with hand held cameras is a quasi-documentary style, “Tangerine” is a serio-comic tale which offers a no-holdsbarred look into the hard lives of transgender prostitutes in Los Angeles. The low budget production further impressed audiences when it was revealed that Baker shot his film with an iPhone. “I had to convince myself that this was the right move,” auteur Baker told SFGN. “At first it felt like stepping back, but technology has advanced so its now possible – you have to embrace the aesthetic.” Shooting with the phone proved to be an asset to the small, intimate production. “The benefits of the iPhone revealed themselves as we were shooting,” Baker said. “Tangerine would have been a different film if it had been shot with a 35mm camera. The iPhone was perfect for this kind of film as I was trying to capture street life.” Most impressively, the final product has a polished and professional look. “Moon Dog Labs created an anamorphic adapter that fit over the iPhone lens,” Baker reports. “This elevated the film to a cinematic level.” Another impressive aspect of “Tangerine” are the appearances by several famous Hollywood faces, like noted character actor Clu Gulager. Now 86 years old, Gulager’s extensive career includes long stints as a popular TV cowboy on 1960s TV series such as “The Virginian” and “The Tall Man.” In “Tangerine,” the still-active performer is seen in a brothel. “Clu came to me,” Baker said. “He’s a fan of my previous films and said if you ever need me, I’m there.” James Ransone, a rising star who’s many film and TV credits, include the “Sinister”
film series, “Law and Order” and “CSI”, is wonderfully over-the-top as a foul mouthed pimp who operates his business out of a donut shop. Baker calls the actor a “good friend.” And finally, openly gay comic Jason Stuart has a cameo as the doorman at a Hollywood cabaret. Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, two transgender actresses, head the cast as SinDee and Alexandra. Both are hard boiled street prostitutes and best friends. That friendship is tested as Sin-Dee searches Hollywood and West Hollywood for Dinah, the cisgender woman who her fiance (Ransome) slept with while Sin-Dee was in jail. The camera follows the two women around town as they meet up with a variety of shady characters, including a married Armenian cab driver who has a fetish for transwomen – Baker noted that the film’s Armenian cast members are all celebrities in their home country. Set on Christmas Eve, “Tangerine” effectively captures the harshness of street life and the dangers that transgender prostitutes often face. Baker addressed concerns that have come from within the trans community regarding the constant portrayals of trans women as prostitutes in popular culture. “We made a film about a small microcosm,” he said. “It’s a film about sex workers, and about a location, as much as its about trans people.” The film captures a reality about trans life, Baker argues. “Unemployment is extreme among trans people,” he pointed out. “Many are forced into the underground economy – sex work and drugs. This exists. To ignore it is still marginalizing. I want to humanize these characters--there’s so much shaming, and that’s not a fair thing.” It’s also, the filmmaker points out, possibly the first film in which a trans character is played by a trans actress in a lead role. “These are characters that anyone can identify with,” Baker said.
“Tangerine” is now available on DVD and Blu Ray.
