avid Richardson is taking the discussion away from the bathroom. In an attempt to avoid pitfalls from previous sessions, Richardson, an openly gay Florida lawmaker, is preparing to fight for civil rights on different terms. In an interview with public broadcasting station WFSU, Richardson said a three-pronged approach is needed to pass a comprehensive bill protecting LGBT Floridians from discrimination in matters of housing, employment and public accommodations. “There seems to be more of an appetite to address the housing component of the comprehensive bill,” Richardson told WFSU. “And there seems less interest in dealing with the public accommodation bill, quite frankly, because of the bathroom component.” Richardson, a Miami Beach Democrat, represents house district 113 in Tallahassee. In previous sessions, Richardson has advocated for LGBT protections in the state’s youth foster care programs, introduced a bill to permit recognition of same-sex parents on their child’s birth certificate and led efforts to clean up Florida’s prison system.

DOWNTOWN ELEVATED

Having been through a “bathroom bill” dilemma and observed North Carolina lawmakers suffer through a similar fate, Richardson understands some topics are better left alone. “You have to ask yourself, do you want to try to get something accomplished or do you want to get nothing accomplished?,” Richardson asked during his WFSU interview. “I’m a legislator who is willing to move incrementally as long as it doesn’t violate my core values.” Richardson is entering his third term in the Florida House of Representatives. The 2017 legislative session begins in March.

iranian man Barred From reentering us after Going on Gay Cruise (EDGE) An Iranian chemical engineer, who resides and works in San Francisco, says he was barred from reentering the U.S. after returning home from a gay cruse, the Miami Herald reports. Taking to Facebook over the weekend, Maysam Sodagari, who holds a green card, gave a detailed account of his ordeal, which started when President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday, banning refugees, green card and visa holders from a number of Muslim countries entering the U.S. Trump signed the order while Sodagari was on a seven-day Atlantis Cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas trip. While disembarking in Fort Lauderdale Sunday, Sodagari says he was detained by customs officials. “I left the port with a legal status for a gay cruise,” he wrote on Facebook. “Now, I may not be able to enter the U.S. tomorrow. My future is all unclear just by a sudden change in law.” He added: “If I get detained and sent back to Iran, at least I

man Found dead in Tampa, Fla. 3rdsinceGaydecember

(EDGE) The body of a 25-year-old man was found in an alley in Tampa, Fla. last week, making it the third gay man to be killed in the area since December, according to a report from the Tampa Bay Times. Donte Lampkins’ sister dropped him off in downtown Tampa for a doctor’s appointment last Tuesday. Police confirmed to the newspaper he bought a bus ticket around 9:30 a.m. to return to his home and called his mother at 10:30 a.m. But Lampkins didn’t return home or show up for work the following day. Lampkins was found dead last Thursday in an alley and investigators said he suffered “upper body trauma,” according to Fox 13 News. The Tampa Bay Times writes “early evidence suggests Lampkins was shot.” His death marks the third openly gay man killed in central Tampa since December, the newspaper reports. Tampa Police Spokesman Stephen Hegarty said authorities don’t believe the deaths are connected, however. William Leslie MGoff, a 53-year-old nurse, was stabbed to death in his home last month and police have made an arrest in the case. Cops also told the newspaper they are close to Donte Lampkins. The Miami Herald reports that three hours after his first post, he was released and wrote, “I am free to go back home.” Sodagari told the newspaper he was nervous about being detained by officials treated him well, saying they were “friendly” and “professional.” “They explained all the processes, and why they’re doing this. And I understand. It’s their job,” he added. Trump’s executive order puts a 90-day hold on citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the country. It originally prohibited green card holders from those countries from reentering the U.S. Hundreds of people around the country were detained at airports, sparking several protests against Trump’s order.

Target Chair of Calif. Legislature’s hackers LGBT Caucus

(AP) Hackers have targeted the California Legislature’s LGBT caucus chairman by interfering with his campaign website. The Sacramento Bee reports Assemblyman Evan Low’s campaign website was hacked Friday and later blocked as a security risk. Low says authorities have been notified. After hackers took over, Low’s website pointed to Facebook pages for groups calling themselves Shadows Team Hackers and Rajaoui PS. The pages featured posts that identified Low as chair of the LGBT caucus. One included an image of a burning rainbow flag that symbolizes gay pride. Low says the photo represents anti-LGBT imagery. Low is a Democrat from Campbell. He was reelected to a second term in the California Assembly in November.

sympathetic drug dealer Juan in “Moonlight,” a coming-of-age story about a boy growing up poor, black and gay in Miami, taught him acceptance and used his acceptance speech to take aim at President Donald Trump’s immigration ban. “I think what I’ve learned from working on ‘Moonlight’ is we see what happens when we persecute people,” he said. “They fold into themselves-what I was so grateful about in having the opportunity to play Juan was playing a gentleman who saw a young man folding into himself, as the result of the persecution of his community, and taking the opportunity to uplift him, tell him that he mattered, that he was okay, accept him. And I hope that we do a better job of that.” Ali, who also stars in “Hidden Figures” which took home the SAG’s biggest prize Sunday, went on to say: “When we get caught up in the minutiae, the details that make us all different, there’s two ways of seeing that. You can see the texture of that person, the qualities that make them unique, or you can go to war about it, say, ‘That person is different from me, I don’t like you, so let’s battle.’” Ali was also nominated for a Golden Globe for his “Moonlight” role and is also up for an Oscar.

ot long after the Women’s March on Washington, a new LGBT protest is set to be underway — this time alongside Pride 2017 weekend in D.C. Brooklyn resident David Bruinooge announced the “National Pride March” over Facebook with its own page and event. It is set for June 11 of this year, the same day as the Capital Pride Festival, where he hopes the march will end. “I was watching the events unfold on TV and I was very proud and inspired by all the women, the strong women in our country who were kind of taking this to the street and getting their voices heard,” Bruinooge told the Washington Blade. “And in the back of my mind as an openly gay man I thought the gay community should be doing something like this to follow up on the momentum,” he said. The name of the event was originally “Gays on the Mall” but has since changed

to the “National Pride March” to be more inclusive. “This will be an ALL inclusive and peaceful event!” reads the Facebook page. “If you cannot attend the March in Washington, DC, we urge you to reach out to your local Pride organizations to assist in creating solidarity through your existing Pride events. Let’s make this truly a “National Pride March” that spreads from coast to coast and shows solidarity through our Pride movement.”

earing pink knitted “pussy” hats, people stormed the United States capital in protest coinciding with the recent inauguration of President Donald Trump. Now, more men are stepping up with a “protest armor” of their own. A new organization, the Kiss My Trump Foundation, is launching a $20 pair of underwear against Trump. It’s a “battle-tested pair of underwear that show Trump exactly what we think of him,” said the foundation, “Using a part of our body that only men have.” The pair of fitted boxers sports a starspangled blue waistband and an illustration of Trump kissing a baby form of Hillary Clinton

surrounded by secret service, Bernie Sanders and other American-clad spectators. Trump’s kissing face is placed just above the underwear’s front flap. The organization has taken up a new definition for the word “trump:” “The male genital organ of higher vertebrates, carrying the duct for the transfer of sperm during copulation.” While it may be dissuading to potential customers who may not have the “parts” the website designates for its products, all profits go towards LGBT-centered organizations including The Trevor Project, Equality Florida, The Milk Institute, SAGE, Equality Now and more. The underwear is available in limited quantities.

he new United States Ambassador to the United Nations gave ambiguous responses to questions about LGBT people. But that didn’t stop her from sailing through her Senate confirmation hearing. Nikki Haley, 45, the former Governor of South Carolina, was confirmed Tuesday as the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. During her hearing, Haley was asked multiple times about her beliefs regarding LGBT people. When U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) asked Haley how she intended to protect LGBT rights internationally, she responded: “I think it’s very important that we talk about America’s values. We do not allow discrimination against anyone. I will always speak out about this. We don’t want to permit discrimination here or in any other country.” Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) followed by asking how Haley would represent the government in discussions regarding LGBT rights to which Haley replied: “I strongly believe that the U.S. should unabashedly promote American values. If confirmed, I will work to advance human rights for everyone.” Jessica Stern, executive director of OutRight Action International, a global LGBT organization, said she believes Haley will fight against discrimination. “I am reassured that Governor Haley condemned discrimination on any basis,” Stern said in a news release. “On the surface these are strong and inclusive statements; that’s certainly how I want to interpret them.” Stern, however, said she was disappointed Haley could not voice support for LGBT people. “I can’t help but notice that Governor Haley didn’t say the words lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex. This is important. At the United Nations diplomats fight tooth and nail over every word because

each one influences international law, public policies and government budgets,” Stern said. “When these words aren’t spoken, we see dire consequences like ‘conversion’ therapy of gay men, forced marriages of lesbians or mandatory sterilization of transgender people. We need LGBTI people to be specifically named and protected.” Haley has a tough row to hoe. Rightwing Republicans have long disparaged the U.S. relationship with the U.N. Earlier this month, U.S. Congressman Mike Rogers (R-AL) introduced a bill calling for a termination of U.S. membership in the U.N., immediate cease of funding and removal of U.N. headquarters from New York City. Haley, however, has faced challenges from her own party before. As Governor, she broke with far right Republicans in South Carolina, and authorized the Confederate battle flag be removed from the statehouse grounds. This gives organizations like Stern’s hope. “OutRight looks forward to working with the new ambassador to ensure an unequivocal and specific American voice against discrimination and violence internationally – on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status, gender, race, faith, nationality or any other status,” Stern said. Having the U.S. participate in an LGBT core group is a priority for OutRight Action International, Stern said. When Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) asked Haley about the core group, she did not give a clear indication it would happen. “Ambassador Haley must continue U.S. participation in the LGBT Core Group and continue in coalition with LGBT-friendly foreign governments like those that have recently fought for the Independence Expert on discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity,” Stern said. 2.1.2017 •

California State Senators Toni Atkins and Scott Wiener introduced Senate Bill 179 on Jan. 24, known as the Gender Recognition Act of 2017. The bill would improve the process of updating names and gender on legal documents. The bill would also allow people to select “non-binary” as a gender and remove the requirement that doctors attest to medical treatment. Atkins, an open lesbian, claimed the bill is an opportunity “to advance civil rights for a community. It is about evolving thoughts around who we identify as, as individuals,” according to The Bay Area Reporter. If approved by the Legislature and signed by the governor, it would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018 and would make California the first state to recognize a third gender for legal documents.

Alberto Mier, CNN.

“I think as other states move to ostracize and marginalize transgender people with bathroom bills and other attacks, it’s even more important for California to go in the other direction and embrace our transgender brothers and sisters,” said Wiener, who is gay. “We need to make it easier for people to go through a transition which is already a difficult period for a lot of people, and we can make it easier by modernizing our laws.”

he President’s pick for Secretary of the Air Force is already drawing fire over her record on LGBT rights. On Monday, President Donald J. Trump announced Heather Wilson, an Air Force Academy graduate and former congresswoman from New Mexico, as his choice to serve as Secretary of the United States Air Force. For some, however, Wilson is way off into the wild blue yonder. “Wilson’s record on LGBTQ equality is abysmal,” writes author Nathaniel Frank in a blog piece for Slate.com. “She consistently earned a zero rating from the Human Rights Campaign for her votes on LGBTQ issues. She refused to support federal nondiscrimination protections. She opposed expanding federal hate crimes law to add sexual orientation and gender identity. She not only opposed marriage equality and even civil unions, saying contrary to all the evidence, that children do better with a mother and father, she also voted for a federal constitutional amendment to enshrine marriage discrimination in our founding document.” Wilson, 56, served in the Air Force from 1982-1989, rising to the rank of Captain during a time which saw the fall of the Berlin Wall and destruction of the Warsaw Pact. She was stationed in Europe during the Cold War and served on the National Security Council staff under President George H.W. Bush. “Heather Wilson is going to make an outstanding Secretary of the Air Force,” Trump said in a statement. “Her distinguished military service, high level

of knowledge and success in so many fields gives me great confidence that she will lead our nation’s Air Force with the greatest competence and integrity.” In 2012, Wilson ran for the U.S. Senate in New Mexico, but lost. During that campaign, Wilson opposed a measure to protect LGBT school children from bullying, claiming the proposal would criminalize teasing and “punish children.” “It remains unclear if the new administration will target LGBTQ service members. But it’s not reassuring that Wilson is Trump’s nominee for Air Force secretary,” writes Frank, author of “Awakening: How Gays and Lesbians Brought Marriage Equality to America.” “Even if the official policy of inclusion remains safe, there are serious risks that a culture of homophobia or permissive ‘boys will be boys’ views toward harassment could devastate cohesion and morale throughout the force.” Andy Eddy, spokesman for the Broward Log Cabin Republicans, said he did not think the Trump administration had any intentions to undo the civil rights gains made by LGBT Americans during the Obama administration. “Marriage is settled,” Eddy said. “The Supreme Court has decided that and I don’t see us going back. Trump is not concerned about gay issues, he’s more focused on debt reduction, national security and creating jobs.” When told of Wilson’s record, Eddy, an Air Force veteran, said he was not “shocked.” “The Air Force tends to be the most conservative branch of the armed forces,” he said.

even Florida agencies benefitted from the 2016 SMART Ride. In a ceremony, Jan. 14 at the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, more than $1 million was disbursed to agencies providing services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Leading the way was AIDS Help of Key West, a legacy organization for the SMART Ride, followed by Pridelines Miami, Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, Broward House, Compass Community Center, Miracle of Love and Metro Health, Wellness & Community Centers. Metro Health, Wellness & Community Centers has served the Tampa Bay area since 1993. “We had tremendous growth out of the Tampa/St. Pete area,” said Glen Weinzimer, Founder of SMART Ride. “We had 37 new riders from Tampa/St. Pete and people were surprised, but what we found out was they had four new captains and those captains did a great job of convincing their friends and social networks to volunteer and get involved.”

The 13th edition of SMART Ride was special for Weinzimer in that the ride launched from the University of Miami in Coral Gables. “That gave us a new level of credibility,” Weinzimer said. “Leaving from a university also shines a light on the fact that the largest demographic of new (HIV) infections are 16 to 24-year-olds.” Because of the change in Washington, Weinzimer said community organizations will be called on more than ever to deliver services to those in need. When he gave his speech in Key West at the end of the 2016 ride, Weinzimer said he did not think Donald J. Trump would be elected President. “There’s a lot of uncertainty now,” Weinzimer said. “There’s concern about Ryan White funding and the Affordable Care Act. What are they going to scrub? What about the pre-existing conditions rule? This is why it’s important for people to get involved in things they care about in their community and not let those in need fall through the cracks.”

the annual 165-mile cycling event from Miami to Key West returns for its 14th edition this November. for more information, visit www.thesmartride.org

He also cited the attack on the LGBT nightclub in Orlando last year to explain, in a memo issued Saturday, why he is developing a “Plan to Defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.” But LGBT legal activists were among the throngs of people denouncing the immigration restrictions. “The new policy is blatantly unconstitutional and betrays our nation’s commitment to religious freedom,” said Shannon Minter, legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights. “It endangers the lives of countless people, including LGBT people, in the targeted countries. Trump’s mention of sexual orientation is a distraction and does not mitigate the unlawfulness or reprehensibility of the new policy in any way.” Rachel Tiven, chief executive officer for Lambda Legal said, “LGBT people refuse to be pawns in Mr. Trump’s dangerous and inhumane game. We utterly reject his discrimination against Muslims in the guise of concern trolling for LGBT rights. If he really wants to help LGBT people, he can pledge to retain the executive orders that help protect us and to nominate a Supreme

Court justice who supports equal treatment of all regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.” Reaction to the executive order was swift and dramatic from all quarters of the U.S. and world, with protesters gathering outside the White House and at international airports around the globe. By Sunday, Trump issued a statement saying, “To be clear, this is not a Muslim ban…. This is not about religion –this is about terror and keeping our country safe.” President Trump compared his executive order to action taken by President Obama in 2011, suspending for several months the processing of applications from Iraqi nationals seeking to enter the U.S. The suspension was taken after the FBI found evidence that two Iraqi nationals who entered the U.S. as refugees had engaged in terrorist activities. Specifically, Trump’s executive order states that the United States “should not admit those who engage in acts of bigotry or hatred… or those who would oppress Americans of any race, gender, or sexual orientation.” It says its purpose is to “protect Americans” by ensuring that “those admitted to this country do not bear hostile attitudes toward it and its founding principles.” The order “suspends” for 90 days the entrance of both “immigrants and nonimmigrants” from any of seven designated Muslim-dominated countries, saying their entrance “would be detrimental to the interests of the United States.” The order also suspends the U.S. refugee program for 120 days while various federal agencies amend the program “to ensure that those approved for refugee admission do not pose a threat to the security and welfare of the United States….” It directs that the refugee program changes include “to the extent permitted by law” amendments “to prioritize refugee claims made by individuals on the basis of religious-based persecution, provided that the religion of the individual is a minority religion in the individual’s country of nationality.” This latter sentence is aimed at giving priority to applications filed by Christians from Muslim nations. President Trump explained that provision to CNN. In Syria, he said, “They were chopping off the heads of everybody, but more so the

Christians,” so he thought it unfair that the U.S. was allowing more Muslims than Christians into the U.S. CNN fact-checked that point and cited Pew research indicating that, in 2016, 99 percent of Syrians entering the U.S. were Muslim, compared to less than one percent Christian. However, the Syrian population is 93 percent Muslim. And the numbers of Muslims and Christians allowed into the U.S. from all countries were roughly the same. The order specifically identifies Syrians seeking refugee status as “detrimental” to U.S. interests and suspends their entry “until such time as I have determined that sufficient changes have been made [to the refugee program] to ensure [their admission] is consistent with the national interest.” The order also calls on Homeland Security to expedite the implementation of a “biometric entry-exit tracking system for all travelers to the United States.” The order applies to people arriving to the U.S. from seven specific nations: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, and Somalia. Numerous media organizations have reported that, while many of Trump’s business interests are located in Muslimdominated countries, none are located in any of the seven targeted nations. National Public Radio also noted that “No Muslim extremist from any of these places has carried out a fatal attack in the U.S. in more than two decades.” The ACLU has filed a lawsuit to stop the immigration ban and a federal judge in New York temporarily blocked the order’s call for deportation of immigrants arriving at

U.S. airports with valid visas, green cards, or refugee status. Federal judges in other states took other actions that stopped parts of the order. But the Department of Homeland Security vowed to forge ahead with enforcement, saying it “retains its right to revoke visas at any time if required for national security or public safety.” In a January 28 memo concerning ISIS, President Trump directed the Secretary of Defense to present to him within 30 days a “preliminary draft” of a “comprehensive strategy and plans for the defeat of ISIS.” “ISIS is responsible for the violent murder of American citizens in the Middle East, including the beheadings of James Foley, Steven Sotloff, and Peter Abdul-Rahman Kassig, as well as the death of Kayla Mueller,” states the memo. “In addition, ISIS has inspired attacks in the United States, including the December 2015 attack in San Bernardino, California, and the June 2016 attack in Orlando, Florida.” During his campaign for the presidency last year, Trump repeatedly cited the attack on the Orlando nightclub Pulse, frequently in the context of his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. The gunman who murdered 49 people and injured 102 others at the nightclub in June of last year was an American-born U.S. citizen whose parents had immigrated from Afghanistan. The gunman called 911 during the attack and declared his allegiance with the Islamic State (aka ISIS or ISIL), but investigators did not find any evidence beyond his statement that the shooter was “directed externally” by any terrorist organization.

Lady GaGa: super BoWL’s FirsT LGBT headLiner For haLFTime shoW Brittany Ferrendi

T

his bisexual icon is about to make history. Best-selling performance artist and singer Lady Gaga is set to headline the 2017 Super Bowl halftime show this weekend, making her the first known LGBT person to headline for the Super Bowl. “It’s not an illusion. The rumors are true. This year the SUPER BOWL goes GAGA!” she tweeted in September of last year. Lady Gaga is not shy about her sexuality — she revealed at the very beginning of her career that she is bisexual. In 2009 she discussed it candidly in an interview with Barbara Walters. In 2013 she pushed back against those who dismissed her bisexuality as a marketing gimmick. She once told fans: “You know what? It’s not a lie that I am bisexual and I like women, and anyone that wants to twist this into ‘she says she’s bisexual for marketing,’ this is a fucking lie. This is who I am and who I have always been.” She also previously revealed during one of her tours that her hit single “Poker Face” is about her bisexual identity. Gaga has been an outspoken advocate for the LGBT community, making her a gay icon. She was one of the leading celebrity activists fighting for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 2010 and spoke at the National Equality March in Washington, D.C. in 2009. In 2012, she launched the Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit against bullying and

that supports youth through empowerment with a focus on well-being and development. A year later, Lady Gaga celebrated the rulings against Proposition 8 and an important portion of the Defense of Marriage Act at New York’s 2013 Pride Celebration. Clutching a rainbow flag to her chest, she said at the time: “It’s my LGBT friends and fans who always said to me, ‘I knew Lady Gaga when.’ Well, look who the star is now. Now I get to say I knew you when you suffered. When you felt unequal. When you felt there was nothing to look forward to. I knew you then and I knew you when, but I really know you now.” Following the worst mass shooting in U.S. history at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando — which took the lives of 49 people and injured 53 others in June of last year — Lady Gaga appeared at a vigil in Los Angeles and gave an emotional speech. “Tonight I will not allow my anger and outrage over this attack to overshadow our need to honor those who are grieving truly for their lost ones; lost members of the LGBT community,” she said at the time. “I hope you know that myself and so many are your allies. Not only me, but everyone here. We represent the compassion and the loyalty of millions of people around the world that believe in you. You are not alone, you are not alone.” Alongside fellow pop star Madonna, Lady Gaga spent her Thanksgiving weekend at an LGBT youth homeless shelter. Though they did not visit the Ali Forney Center at the same time, Lady Gaga brought presents and led a

meditation session, according to her tweets at the time. She has also dipped her LGBT advocacy into the recent election. Following the win of Donald Trump as president of the U.S., Lady Gaga took a stand by protesting outside of Trump Tower in New York City, bearing a sign that read “Love trumps hate.” Trump’s cabinet is lining up to be one of the most anti-LGBT in history with nominees such as Jeff Sessions, who received a zero percent rating from the Human Rights Campaign’s Congressional Scorecard on LGBT rights. Trump’s vice president Mike Pence signed off on the right for businesses in Indiana to discriminate against gay people according to their religious beliefs through the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. “I want to live in a #CountryofKindness where #LoveTrumpsHate,” Lady Gaga wrote on Twitter with an accompanying photo of her protest. This isn’t the first time she will make an appearance at the Super Bowl. In 2016, Lady Gaga sang the national anthem opening up for Super Bowl 50. After her performance last year, she remarked that the experience was “really amazing.” “Singing for the fans in the stands and all over the world, it was so cool,” she told Extra. In addition to her halftime performance this weekend, Lady Gaga will also appear in a 60-second Tiffany & Co. short film to premiere during the Super Bowl.

“I always want to be challenging the status quo, it’s who I am,” she says in the commercial, which was released in a 15-second preview on Sunday. “I love to change.” There is a petition to remove her as the Super Bowl headliner and replace her with Migos. The petition does not appear to cast the singer away for her sexuality — instead, creator Justin G. from San Francisco, California seems to want to see his ideal lineup in action. “Halftime should be Migos killing Bad and Boujee, Future kills em with March Madness, then Outkast comes out and does an AQUEMINI sampler and then they end it with BUN B and JAY Z DOING BIG PIMPIN!,” he wrote on the Change.org petition. “If you’re gonna put on a show for billions THIS IS THE ONLY SHOW.” At the time of this writing, the petition had 57,000 supporters. Gaga has won six Grammy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. She was the top selling artist by Billboard in 2010, later named by them as Woman of the Year in 2015. In 2010, she was named Most Influential Artist by Time Magazine. From 2010 through 2014 Forbes named her as one of the World’s Most Powerful Women and Rolling Stone gave her the title Queen of Pop. She also holds twelve Guinness World Records for her music milestones like FastestSelling U.S. Digital Album for her album “Born This Way.”

T

he Boy Scouts of America announced Monday that it will allow transgender children who identify as boys to enroll in its boys only programs. The organization said it had made the decision to begin basing enrollment in its boys-only programs on the gender a child or parent lists on the application to become a scout. The Boy Scouts had previously held a policy that relied on the gender listed on a child’s birth certificate for those programs. The organization’s leadership had considered a recent case in Secaucus, New Jersey, where an 8-year-old transgender child had been asked to leave his Scout troop after parents and leaders found out he is transgender. But the statement issued Monday said the change was made because of the larger conversation about gender identity going on around the country. “For more than 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America, along with schools, youth sports and other youth organizations, have ultimately deferred to the information on an individual’s birth certificate to determine eligibility for our single-gender programs,” the statement said. “However, that approach is no longer sufficient as communities and state laws are interpreting gender identity differently, and these laws vary widely from state to state.” Kristie Maldonado said she had mixed emotions Monday night when a representative of Boy Scouts of America called to tell her the organization would allow her son, Joe, to re-enroll in his troop after he was asked to leave last fall. Maldonado said she would like her son to rejoin the Secaucus troop, but only if the scout leader who made the previous decision leaves. She said Joe, who will turn 9 on Wednesday, has spoken publicly about the incident. She called him a “ham” and noted he had a big birthday

party on Saturday with the mayor of Secaucus in attendance. “I’m so grateful. I really am that they’re accepting and that there won’t be any issues. They (other transgender youth) won’t have to go through what my son went through,” Maldonado said when reached by phone Monday. “It’s a big change for everybody that all are accepted now ... I’m so delighted that they finally called and they did say this, but I’m still angry.” Maldonado said the earlier decision to remove her son from the troop made him feel different, and she wanted to make sure he knew the troop made a mistake. The Boys Scouts said the enrollment decision goes into effect immediately. “Our organization’s local councils will help find units that can provide for the best interest of the child,” the statement said. Zach Wahls, co-founder of the group Scouts for Equality, called the decision historic. “The decision to allow transgender boys to participate in the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts is an important step forward for this American institution,” he wrote in a statement posted to social media. “We are incredibly proud of Joe Maldonado - the transgender boy from New Jersey whose expulsion last year ignited this controversy - and his mother Kristie for their courage in doing what they knew was right. We are also proud of the Boy Scouts for deciding to do the right thing.” Boy Scouts of America leaders lifted a blanket ban on gay troop leaders and employees in July 2015 amid intense pressure. The group had, after heated internal debate, decided in 2013 to allow openly gay youth as scouts. The national Girl Scouts organization, which is not affiliated with the Boy Scouts, has accepted transgender members for years.

protected, not corrupted. The LGBT community has an obligation to be heard, because we have too often been the victim of rights abuses and wrongful discrimination. Our nation broke free from a king 240 years ago not to be ruled by one today. Trump will turn against anyone who does not deify him. My point is different though. The powers Trump has, America never should have given any president. Our target can’t just be a wild-eyed hyena in the White House. Our target should have been keeping the White House, our house. We should have been saying no to domestic spying; gotten upset with the elimination of Miranda for suspects; maybe more outraged by what Edward Snowden was telling us than the way he

revealed it. We should have demanded democracy before we opened our doors to a would-be dictator. As Glenn Greenwald wrote incisively in the Intercept a few months ago, “many people are perfectly content to have such authority vested in leaders they trust, and fear them only when a politician from the opposing party wields them.” On February 1, 2017, we are paying the price for that carelessness. The road ahead won’t be smooth. The king is not kind, and his bastions will not be benevolent. The only good thing about the bad thing is that he will unite all of us in all things. But the power is with him. The passion and protests, well, that is what we have going for us. See you in D.C. in June.

FEBRUARY IS HEART HEALTH MONTH WHAT DOES THE DENTIST HAVE TO DO WITH THAT?

F

EBRUARY IS A SIGNIFICANT MONTH FOR THE HEART - we celebrate it as a symbol of love on Valentines Day AND it is American Heart Month! Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about its prevention. Many deaths from heart attacks could have been prevented through healthier habits and better management of diseases like high blood pressure and Diabetes. Take It One Step at a Time. You can control many risk factors for heart disease, including: • Diet • Physical activity • Tobacco use • Obesity • High blood pressure • High blood cholesterol • Diabetes So, how is heart disease related to your mouth? Several studies exist to explain the link between periodontal (gum) disease and heart disease.

1.

Oral bacteria can affect the heart via the blood stream. They attach to fatty plaques in the heart blood vessels and add to clot formation.

2.

Another possibility is that the inflammation caused by gum disease increases plaque buildup, which may contribute to swelling of the arteries.

Researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease. Unfortunately, 80% of people have Gum Disease and DO NOT KNOW IT! There is usually no pain until very late in the disease process when the teeth become loose. However, gum disease is a very treatable condition and can be prevented.

Call your dentist this month of February and have him or her evaluate the health of your gums. If you have gum disease, your dentist can put you on the right path back to health!

Longtime Wilton Drive Restaurateur Honored by Commission By Michael d’Oliveira Carol Moran may hold the record for the most bars and restaurants opened on Wilton Drive. In her 18-year history here, Moran opened Kicks Sports Bar, New Moon, and 13 | EVEN. Her last restaurant, 13 | EVEN, closed in December and was located only a few feet from her most successful venture – New Moon. For her 18-year run as a business owner in the city, Moran, who said she closed her doors to spend more time supporting her wife, Nancy Goldwin, in New York City, was honored with a proclamation by the city. Jan. 24 was proclaimed as “Carol Moran Day” for Moran and Goldwin’s years of hosting “fundraisers for charitable organizations” and for serving countless “smooth cocktails and amazing entrees” as well as “their selfless support and unconditional friendships.” Commissioner Julie Carson praised Moran by tweaking the city’s tagline – “Life’s Just Better Here.” On her Facebook page, Carson wrote “Life’s Just Better with Carol Moran in Wilton Manors.” When she accepted the proclamation, Moran said she was “sad to be a part-time person now. I believe in this community.” It’s a community she’s seen go through some changes. Unfortunately, she said, not all for the better. In an interview with The Gazette, Moran said she doesn’t like the trend going on right now with bars on Wilton Drive. “I’ve been around a long time.

Carol Moran (center) poses with the Wilton Manors Commission. Submitted photo.

Almost 20 years doing business in this town. Honestly, it’s too much of a bar fight with the bars trying to compete and undercut each other. We just have so many bars. They have to compete. You may be packed but when you’re giving away drinks, what good is that doing you?” Moran said. “I don’t know if it’s overcrowded but it’s definitely a saturated market for sure.” But she is happy to see more variety of restaurants coming to Wilton Drive. Years ago, she said, there were basically just a couple Thai places. “Not that any restaurants are doing a bad job but you need variety. But that’s changing now with other restaurants coming in. I was the first one to open a tapas place.” And she sees more variety in the future. “You want to become something like Las Olas.” As for Moran’s future in the restaurant industry, she said she will be taking a break and supporting her wife. “She’s always supported my endeavors. It’s time to support hers. She really has been uber, uber supportive. I’m going to take some time off. I’ll be the hippie chick in the produce section. I don’t know what I’m going to be when I grow up.” But New York City won’t have all her time, especially when it gets too cold for Moran’s thin native Floridian blood. She plans to visit Florida regularly. “People leave there to come here and I’m going there. I’m going opposite. I’m going to freak out up there. I’m sure of it.”WMG

Let’s Find Some Communities!

Real Estate Geek

By James Oaksun Having defined community and argued for its importance, let’s go the next step and take a look around east Broward (for starters) and see if we can find some areas that might be good candidates for creating community, assuming that communities do not already exist there. Population densities are different in South Florida than they are in many other places. Broward County didn’t really develop in earnest until after the Second World War – the 50s and 60s east of I-95, and even later west of the interstate. Cheap energy and the automobile fostered growth; public transportation was an afterthought, walkability was rarely considered. Of course recent developments have brought new ideas to the table. The notion of some degree of a town core is desirable, and having services within reasonable walking (or electric vehicle) distance is a positive attribute. So when I think about the quest for community, the two places I would start would be the websites publix. com and walkscore.com. As the ubiquitous grocery chain in Florida, Publix is a familiar stop for most residents and many people would like to live close to one. Walkscore. com is a neat site where you can plug in any address and get a score for that location’s walkability from 0 to 100 – a rank of how many of your typical errands could be done on foot.

Now of course there are three or four months here where you would not be advised to walk too far except perhaps early in the morning, certainly not without consulting a health professional. Yet those 3-4 months would prove to be the exception, potentially, within an activity core that could develop within a community. After compiling the information from the Publix and Walkscore sites, we can add information from other sources – for example, the U.S. Census to get population, economic and demographic data. I can then add additional information on the number of single family homes within, say, roughly three-quarters of a mile of that spot, and how pricey (or not) those homes tend to be. Then as we move forward with the review, we can loop back to that Grant Cardone question with which we began the series: Is buying a single family home to live in yourself a bad idea? The accompanying table begins the analytical process that we will continue fleshing out over the next several columns. I have identified several Publix stores thoughout East Broward, and placed next to them the Walkscore associated with their locations. The higher the Walkscore, the more activities there are nearby that can be accomplished on foot (as opposed to having to drive there).

I’ve rank ordered them high to low, the higher ones being potentially more desirable as “community cores” as we have discussed. Next time we will take a look at some more data and then dive in a bit deeper. WMG James Oaksun, Broward's Real Estate Geek(SM), is BrokerOwner of New Realty Concepts in Oakland Park. Wilton Manors Doctor Arrested! Faces charges of distributing HGH By Michael d’Oliveira A Wilton Manors doctor and his medical assistant have been arrested and charged with multiple counts of distribution of controlled substances. Dr. Dominic Riganotti, owner of Wilton Manors Center for Infectious Disease, located at 1881 NE 26 St., and Jacquelin Fernandez were both arrested on Jan. 11. According to a document provided by the U.S. Department of Justice Southern District, Drug Enforcement Agency [DEA] agents learned that Fernandez was “prescribing an unusually large amount of testosterone and Schedule 11 narcotics and is possibly involved in medical fraud.” In September of 2016, the DEA used

a confidential source to begin investigating Riganotti. That source used hidden audio and video surveillance devices to record interactions with Riganotti and Fernandez. The DEA claims that their confidential source was able to make multiple purchases at Riganotti’s office and the Coral Springs home of Fernandez. On Jan. 11, agents searched the Coral Springs home of Fernandez and found multiple boxes of HGH. According to the DEA, Fernandez admitted she was selling HGH out of her home without a license. Later that day, DEA agents searched Riganotti’s business. According to the DEA, Riganotti also confessed to agents. He also informed agents of the location of about 20 grams of methamphetamine inside of a wall socket in his office.

Riganotti was charged with conspiracy to unlawfully distribute human growth hormone, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, and possession of methamphetamine. Fernandez was charged with conspiracy to unlawfully distribute human growth hormone (HGH) and unlawful distribution

of HGH. DEA agents also claim that she used her underage daughter to help her sell and distribute HGH. WMG Both Riganotti and Fernandez have both been released on bail. Calls to their attorney were not returned in time for publication.

New Lesbian Bar to Open in Wilton Manors Last one closed three years ago

Photo: Facebook.

By Michael d’Oliveira Since New Moon closed in March of 2014, it’s been three years since Wilton Manors has had a lesbian bar. Now, G Spot Bar will take up the mantle. Located on Wilton Drive in the former Sidelines, 2301 Wilton Drive, G Spot’s grand opening will be Friday, Feb. 3 from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. One of the owners, Lisette Gomez, was a regular at New Moon and is proud to be bringing back a bar dedicated to women meeting women. “The lesbians have been kind of displaced. New Moon was my regular Friday night spot for many years,” Gomez said. “Once Carol closed, there was nowhere else for us to go.” Opening G Spot was a “no brainer,” she said. “We’re pretty excited to get everyone in one location where they can always go to. But it took a little while to find the right location and the right partner as well.” The announcement of the grand opening is already getting praise from women on the bar’s Facebook page. “I’m glad that there will be somewhere again for women to go out and have a good time with all our ladies! WOO HOO!” wrote Danielle Colucci. “The 954 Lesbians and Gals will be at your grand

opening. We are pretty excited that we have this new location to meetup in Wilton Manors. Thank you. Bring on the fun---Let’s party!” wrote Syl Davis. Karyn Symone, a friend of Gomez, said she’s looking forward to the bar opening and having somewhere to go after softball games. “It’s been a little bit hard because there hasn’t been a place to call home. Not having that place, that unity, it’s been hard. New Moon was home. That was family. When that closed, that was like devastation.” But while the bar is a dedicated space for women to meet women, Gomez said everyone is welcome. “We want to label ourselves as a bar for girls who like girls but there are a lot of gay boys who like to hang out with the lesbians. We’re not discriminatory. There will be Sunday football, drag king shows, as well as [a place for] our straight allies. We want it to be open to everybody.” One of those straight allies is Gomez’s business partner and co-owner, Kat De La Torre. De La Torre has a lot of previous experience working in bars, including places in South Beach, Boston and the Elbow Room and Chili Pepper in Fort Lauderdale.

“I’m very good friends with Lisette. She’s talked to me in the past [about opening a bar]. Recently, we started talking and the ideas started rolling. It’s a great opportunity. I think we can make a great spot for the girls and make everybody happy.” Gomez and De La Torre also want to host Friday night dance parties, live music and other things that few or no other bars on Wilton Drive are doing. “We want to bring the singer-songwriter artist thing to Wilton Manors,” Gomez said. Community The Friends of the Wilton Library book tent in 2014. Facebook.

Friends of the Library

Continue Fundraising Tradition By Michael d’Oliveira For the last 15 years, Paul Kuta has manned The Friends of the Wilton Manors Library book tent event. For Kuta, vice president of The Friends, being involved in the book tent and the rest of the organization is a way to have purpose in retirement and a way to export his love of reading. “Well, bottom line, it’s my love of books and my pleasure at people of all ages finding the books or music, or DVDs they like. It’s because I believe in libraries and I believe in learning and I see what reading comprehension can do for one’s enjoyment and one’s career. Now, I may be an old dinosaur, but I think it’s still true today,” Kuta said. The book tent is also one way the organization raises money to support the city’s library, one of the few independent libraries in Broward County. Other sources of fundraising come from the members of the organization, grants, and posthumous donations from individuals who have left money to the group in their wills. This year alone, The Friends has donated $13,000. Their financial support this year, and in year’s past, has been used to buy computers, electronic books, electronic magazines, books on CD, software programs, large print books, acoustic panels to reduce the noise

coming from the children’s area of the library, and programs for children and adults. “Their fundraising is very important to the library and the community. All the programming is paid for by the friends,” said Rick Sterling, library director. And there’s at least one item The Friends have always funded. “The city has never spent any money buying those computers,” Sterling said. “Without The Friends, the city would either have to cut the budget or remove the number of books we buy to pay for audio/video stuff.” And if they aren’t funding items or programs, said Sterling, they’re helping to organize events. “What really excites us are the children’s programs,” said Benjamin Little, The Friends’ treasurer. There are “magicians, science camps, reading contests, coloring book programs, Spooktacular . . . 19 different programs for the kids,” Little said. “[The children are] discovering and thinking and looking for alternative solutions to things. And, [in doing that they learn that] books are a great way to do that.” The next Friends book tent event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hagen Park during the Island City Yard Sale. Books, videos, CDs and other items will be on sale. WMG

False alarm at Wilton Manors Elementary A response by Wilton Manors police to an unidentified individual on the campus of Wilton Manors Elementary School turned out to be a false alarm. On Jan. 26, the school was put on lockdown and police units responded to the call of an unidentified individual at the school. But according to police, the unidentified individual turned out to be a member of the school’s staff. Police say there was no threat and the school was removed from lockdown shortly thereafter. WMG

Resident Worried About Construction Getting Too Close

RE/MAX Office Replacing Convenience Store The former Kwik Stop store located next to Starbucks on Northeast 26 Street is under renovation and will be used as a RE/ MAX real estate office when renovations are complete, according to the building’s owner Joe Pallant. WMG

Resident Raymond Carrier likes living in his neighborhood behind the Shoppes of Wilton Manors. But he wants a setback in case a developer builds something in the shopping center that Carrier isn’t as enthusiastic about. At the Jan. 24 commissioner meeting, Carrier asked the commission to create a setback in its code between commercial and residential properties. Right now, none exists between the homes that abut the Shoppes of Wilton Manors. He’s worried about a higher building being constructed right next to his property overlooking it. There’s also no setback between The Manor Complex and the residences behind it. Robert Moore, director of Community Development Services, said there is some preliminary talk about The Manor expanding its facilities but nothing has been submitted yet. She said that developers who submit plans before a setback is established would not be bound by it and could build right up to the property line. WMG

Volunteers needed for Art Gallery 21 Wilton Manors’ Art Gallery 21 is seeking volunteer docents for its upcoming Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit “The Way We Worked” which will be on display from March 24, 2017 through May 6, 2017. It’s Official: Humpy’s Gone For Good By Michael d’Oliveira Those hoping to get another cupcake or slice of pizza from Humpy’s Pizza should look elsewhere. Dennis Godfrey, one of the owners of Humpy’s, confirmed to The Gazette that they have no plans on reopening. “The final word on that is that we are completely, permanently and irreversibly done!” Godfrey owned Humpy’s with Steve DeJong. The two closed their popular restaurant, which had been open since February of 2007, after Halloween of last year. In a previous interview DeJong said the closure was because of a predatory Americans with Disabilities lawsuit designed to get money from Humpy’s over an ADA violation in the restaurant’s bathroom. “It’s really just a shakedown of small businesses and we’re being bullied. It’s just too much potentially for us to bare,” DeJong said. He said the lawsuit was dismissed, but only because he’s closing the business. The other reason was due to a rent increase by their landlord. DeJong said the proposed rent increase by the landlord made it “unmanageable and not feasible to stay in business. And they’re going to raise it every year for the next 10 years. They’re playing hardball. It just baffles me they’re not willing to negotiate. We have a third of the shopping center empty.” In a previous interview, Jonathan Gaines, principal with Rivercrest Realty, which owns the Shoppes of Wilton Manors where Humpy’s was located, said he was disappointed he and Dejong couldn’t come to terms on the lease. Since then, said Godfrey, “There’s been no attempt or outreach by the landlord to renegotiate the lease” and that he and DeJong have moved on. WMG

Replica of Wilton Manors Gateway Presented to City By Michael d’Oliveira The Willingham Gateway Towers are long-gone. But reminders of their existence can still be found in photographs and a mosaic at Jaycee Park. And now, there’s a replica of the Towers on display at city hall. The Wilton Manors Historical Society presented the restored replica to the city commission on Jan. 24. Benjamin Little, Historical Society secretary, said his organization was “pleased to present” the replica to the city. He also provided a brief history of the Towers. The Towers were formerly located at Five Points. The larger one sat where Wells Fargo is now. The smaller was where the triangle-shaped open space is. The Limestone used to construct

ForT LauderdaLe is The piLoT TesT For ZieBesT

Photo submitted by Omer BarSadeh

Tony Adams

A

gay innovator and entrepreneur in Miami is offering the world a new way to find the best goods and services in your own backyard. Omer BarSadeh came up with the idea for ZieBest.com – launched on January 1, 2017 - when he relocated from California to south Florida and needed a pair of eyeglasses to correct his astigmatism. That negative experience and the thought that others must be subjected to the same difficulties, led him to create Ziebest which takes a unique approach. Unlike Zagat, Yelp, Angie’s List or other broad-based customer-review driven sites, Ziebest is the world’s only video-driven directory of businesses in your area. BarSadeh said, “Ziebest presents only the top choice in every field in each zone that we cover. The user does not need to sift through dozens of choices and make a decision based on dubious reviews. We present you with only the best, and we bring you into that business with a brief – about two minutes – video that shows you the office, the shop, the goods, the staff and owners. When you go to Ziebest.com and examine a business, you become familiar with that business in a real way through the video we make and present exclusively on our site. There are two additional benefits. On Ziebest, you’ll find promos and special offers made available by the businesses profiled that are offered exclusively to Ziebest users. And, at the bottom of the page you’ll see listings

related to your search. For instance, if you are planning a party and search for a caterer, you might see a suggestion for a florist or a DJ. The idea is to provide convenience and speed for the user who is trying to get the best of anything.” If Ziebest is selecting only one choice in a zone, how does it make that selection? BarSadeh says that there are a number of routes to selection. A third party recommendation, a contact by the company itself, and his own staff investigation that often involves unannounced and secret visits to the business. A listing on Ziebest lasts for one year. At that time, the client company has the option of renewing for a second year. If they choose not to renew, a different company in the same field may take its place. How does Ziebest make money? The user who goes to the website pays nothing. The companies profiled get their listing for free, but they pay a modest fee for the creation of the video appearing on the site. These videos are classy, informative, enjoyable and geared to give the user a clear sense of what to expect when approaching the company. What happens if you have a negative experience with any of the companies highlighted on Ziebest? BarSadeh understands that his concept rests on the premise of excellence, so if he should ever receive a complaint from a user, he and his staff will make a thorough investigation. If the client or customer seems to be correct, the company

ZIEBEST IS THE LATEST IN A SERIES OF SUCCESSFUL VENTURES FOR BARSADEH IN THE VIDEO AND FILM PRODUCTION INDUSTRY.

will be pulled off Ziebest. Because companies do not pay to be listed and because BarSadeh retains ownership of the video during the first year of the listing, he has the right to de-list any company that does not live up to the very high standards of Ziebest. Like Zagat, Ziebest is entirely subjective. A user becoming acquainted with the businesses profiled on the site should develop respect for BarSadeh’s ability to find and present excellence, and come to trust the quality of his suggestions. Because Ziebest is newly launched and not yet operational in zones across the country, BarSadeh chose Fort Lauderdale as the pilot zone in which to test and fine tune his site. He rapidly acquired dozens of listings – you’ll find them on the site – representing restaurants, barber shops, spas and events in a swiftly growing number of categories that target men and women both straight and/ or gay in the Fort Lauderdale area. BarSadeh demonstrated two listings in Fort Lauderdale that will be of interest to gay men. Cabanas Spa and Dick’s Service Station. Ziebest is the latest in a series of successful ventures for BarSadeh in the video and film production industry. From Israel, he first came to the U.S. as a teenager with a group of touring Israeli scouts who performed at venues across the country. In Israel, he got his education and experience in media. He moved to California where video production was more lucrative. He relocated to South Florida, and now lives in North Bay Village in Miami. BarSadeh looks handsome, energized and ready to make Ziebest a success.

I was always taught growing up that we should treat others the way we want to be treated. That’s the ideal that I strive to model for my students, and I hope that this next generation will care for, and show acceptance of, everyone in our society.” The evening wasn’t only about the awards; there were several special performances. LifeStyLe food A protest against Trump, as seen in Key West.

Key WesT diary Rick Karlin

w

e’d already planned an overnight trip to Key West to visit friends vacationing there when we discovered two happy coincidences. As soon as we decided to head to Key West, we found out that one of our idols, Ed White, one of the godfathers of the post-Stonewall gay literary movement, was available to meet us for lunch. Ed is best known for his autobiographical novels, “A Boy’s Own Story” (1982) and “The Beautiful Room Is Empty” (1988), which were groundbreaking at the time for their unapologetically gay sexuality. He also co-wrote (with Dr. Charles Silverstein) the landmark book “The Joy of Gay Sex” in 1977, a biography of Jean Genet and another biographical novel, The Farewell Symphony (1997). For a literary nerd like me, the chance to meet my idol and his husband, Michael Carroll, also a celebrated writer; was nirvana. My husband Gregg and our friends (and fellow literary nerds) Dan and Eric met Ed and Mike at the Sun Sun Restaurant at the Casa Marina Waldorf Astoria Resort (1500 Reynolds St., 888-303-5717 casamarinaresort.com). It’s a bit pricier than most places I would choose, but when you’re meeting your idol, sometimes you have to shell out a few bucks, especially when you’re sitting at a table on a manmade beach. Ed and his husband spend a month or so in Key West each winter and this restaurant was close to their home. To read Ed’s recollections of his days in Key West, check out TheGuardian. com/travel/2011/jan/29/edmund-white-keywest-florida. Ironically, the restaurant is just yards from what was the Atlantic Shores Resort, which was infamous for its decadent tea dances on its “Dick Dock.” As we chatted our lunch arrived. Trying not to fawn too much, I turned my attention to the fish tacos, which topped slabs of perfectly cooked Mahi with a tropical slaw, jalapenos, guacamole and mango salsa. I didn’t even

36

2 .1.2017

care that the tortilla chips were stale. My husband ordered a fish sandwich and subbed fries for chips (a $5 upcharge!). Ed enjoyed his cheeseburger. I limited myself to one cocktail; cucumber lemonade made with vodka, agave, fresh mint, lime and lemon juice, because one does not want to get sloppy while lunching with a literary legend. Alas, lunch had to come to an end and we bid farewell. I took some comfort in knowing that by meeting Edmund White, I’d now spent time with all three of my literary heroes, including Andrew Holleran and Armistead Maupin (younger readers, do yourself a favor and check out their work, as well as Ed’s). We headed back to Alexander’s Bed & Breakfast to relax by the pool and chat with some of the handsome men sunbathing there. That night we decided to check out Blue Heaven (729 Thomas St., 305-296-8666, BlueHeavenKW.com), one of the town’s funkier restaurants. It’s a bit of a tourist trap and dinners are outrageously over-priced (stop by for lunch, brunch or breakfast to soak up the atmosphere for a lot less money). It truly encapsulates the Key West mystique. The shuttered blue building on Petronia Street in the heart of Old Town, has been around for a hundred years or so (at least parts of it have) and in the past, housed a bordello, an ice cream parlor, theater, billiard hall and even hosted cockfighting, gambling and boxing matches refereed by Ernest Hemingway. In the 1990s, it was taken over by a pair of artists who started dishing up beans, rice, and fish to help make ends meet. There are chickens running around, almonds falling onto the mismatched tables and chairs and candlelight everywhere. The food is beautifully prepared and runs the gamut from organic vegetarian combinations to steak and grilled fish, all with a bit of a Caribbean vibe. We began our dinner with a combo of carrot and curry soup garnished with mango chutney and a rich vegetarian

black bean soup topped with sour cream and a sprinkling of grated white cheddar. Both were delish and satisfying enough that each bowl was shared by two. An entrée featuring Caribbean jerk shrimp would have been better if the shrimp were a bit larger. However, they were perfectly cooked before being deglazed with Red Stripe beer, which added a nice tang to the dish. It was served with rice and black beans, corn salad and a giant wedge of yummy cornbread dripping in butter. Another entrée showcased pork tenderloin so tender that it could be cut with the side of a fork. That dish was served atop mashed sweet potatoes. The cornbread was the perfect vehicle to mop up the rich curry butter sauce. An eightounce portion of Black Angus filet mignon paired perfectly with a dark cabernet demiglace. My vegetarian husband thoroughly enjoyed his macrobiotic bowl of grains and veggies. We eyed the mile-high meringue on the Key Lime pie, but we were too full to consider ordering it. As it would happen the next afternoon Key West was one of many cities that held a march to protest Herr Trump’s inauguration. While Monroe County voters overall chose Trump, Key West remained solidly blue, with Hillary Clinton winning all 10 of its precincts. We joined the group on Duval Street., where Key West Police estimated the crowd to be 3,000 to 3,500 people. Bearing posters reading, “Dump Trump,” “Love Trumps Hate,” and “Not My President,” the crowd included visitors and locals alike. At the end in Mallory Square, chief organizer Jamie Mattingly, who wore a rainbow flag as a cape, asked the crowd to hold hands and sing along with John Lennon’s “Imagine.” After the march and rally, we dragged ourselves back to Alexander’s before hitting the road for the drive home. As we were

getting to Islamorada, about the halfway point, we realized we hadn’t eaten lunch and decided to pull over at the next place that looked nice. Although it was the name that attracted us, we hit the culinary jackpot with Ciao Hound (84001 Overseas Hwy., Islamorada, 305-664-5300, holidayisle. com/islamorada-restaurants/ciao-hound) just a few yards off U.S.1. The Holiday Isle Resort is a compound of buildings, which at first glance, appears to be the kind of mid-century modern places we’d stay on family vacations when I was a kid. However, upon closer inspection, we realized everything had been renovated. Ciao Hound is one of three dining establishments on the property and has the feel of a classic Italian-American neighborhood spot, yet pairs Tuscan flavors and fresh locally sourced ingredients. My grilled mahi-mahi featured fish so fresh I wanted to slap it. It was served atop a mound of pasta with a surprisingly mild puttanesca sauce. My hubby’s lobster ravioli showcased tender pillows of pasta enveloping a creamy lobster filling bathed in tomato cream sauce. Although the dish only featured flakes of lobster, not chunks, as the menu promised, it was so perfectly prepared we didn’t mind that much. Freshly baked garlic bread, served with a drizzle of balsamic syrup was all that was needed to complete this meal. There’s a full bar serving local and imported beers, wines by the glass or bottle, classic mixed drinks and nearly a dozen Italian-inspired cocktails, including the Limoncello Sunrise. We passed on the liquor since we were about to drive back to WilMa and it was already pretty late and we were fairly worn out by our whirlwind Key West weekend.

Comedian Lisa Lampanelli returns to the Hard Rock Live on Saturday, Feb. 4.

The ‘Queen oF mean’ deveLops a soFT spoT J.W. Arnold

I

s the so-called “Queen of Mean,” comedian Lisa Lampanelli, mellowing with age? I vividly recall my first profanity-laced telephone interview a few years ago with the foul-mouthed funny lady. I honestly wasn’t looking forward to this conversation, but as an arts and entertainment journalist, taking on the tough assignments goes right along with the puff pieces on Broadway and television stars. “I’m going to pull an end table out of my ass and then call everybody a cunt, so it’s a wellrounded show,” Lampanelli said of the act she’s planning to present at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood this weekend. The “Celebrity Apprentice” vet will also undoubtedly throw in a few jokes about Donald Trump. She’s roasted him twice and, in that setting, perhaps her expletive-laced language might not be so offensive, given the chaos and blunders of the president’s first week in office. “My jokes are always ‘effen’ funny,” she promised. Lampanelli noted that she’s observed changes in her audience over the past 20 years, especially among her LGBT fans. “I’m very grateful,” she explained. “The lesbians used to not get me. There used to be this lesbian attitude going on there, but I’ve noticed people aren’t taking themselves so seriously. It takes time for the lesbians to catch up with the gay men on anything, especially hair and makeup, but they’re jumping on the Lisa Lampanelli boat.” Then Lampanelli admitted she was in the car eating a protein bar. She popped a joke: “I don’t eat candy except holidays: Arbor Day, Kwanzaa, Canadian Thanksgiving…” That’s when the tone of the conversation changed. Lampanelli had always struggled with her weight until undergoing weight loss surgery. “I’m so proud that I’m working on my health

every day, I’m telling the world,” Lampanelli said, inviting the audience to ask her about it at the end of the show. But the emotional scars still remain. “There was a very hot guy who asked me to go out with him, but since I’m a former fat girl and he was too good-looking, I just blushed and told him no. I’d always dated beneath me. it’s not like it was weird, but (the experience) made me learn something about myself, I cheated him out of a wonderful non-sexual experience,” she told me. A newly self-confident Lampanelli doesn’t need to hide behind so many mean-spirited barbs. “It wasn’t a conscious thing that feels fun. But then you notice yourself opening up and being more truthful,” she said. “Because I lost the weight, I have more confidence to deflect the people that don’t like me. It sort of added up to this good conclusion.” Lampanelli is currently working on a new series of plays focusing on food and weight that she will perform again this year in New York City. Another will deal with love and relationships, while a third play deals with anger and grief, sparked by her experience when her father died. As far as her comedy is concerned, Lampanelli said she is satisfied with her accomplishments, but she has set other goals. “As a person, you can’t stay in the same place forever, I want to be in service to people,” she said. “I want to touch people and let them know they’re not alone.” But as a chink in her armor appears, she quickly snaps back and instructs me to share this warning with her audience: “Tell the lesbians to stop hitting on me. I’m not getting on the tuna boat, at least not yet,” Lampanelli declared. Make that the “lovable” Queen of Mean.

Lisa Lampanelli appears at the hard rock Live at Seminole resort and casino in hollywood on Saturday, feb. 4 at 8 p.m. tickets start at $40 at MyhrL.com.

GoodBye mary TyLer moore

She turned the world on with her smile--and her feminism David-Elijah Nahmod

I

t was a life well lived. Mary Tyler Moore, one of television’s most influential and iconic performers, died on Jan. 25 at the age of 80. She leaves behind an incomparable legacy. Moore first rose to prominence when she was cast as housewife Laura Petrie on the classic sitcom “The Dick Van Dyke Show” in 1961. The show, which ran for five seasons, retains a sizable audience today--it was hilarious! But those who are discovering “The Dick Van Dyke Show” today might not realize how groundbreaking it was. Though they slept in twin beds--as dictated by network censors at the time--Rob and Laura Petrie were TV’s first couple who acted as though they were sexually attracted to each other-there was no doubting it when watching their on-camera body language. Looking at reruns of some of the era’s other sitcoms, including “Father Knows Best,” “Leave it to Beaver” or “The Donna Reed Show,” you might wonder where the kids came from--did Mom and Dad ever touch each other? On “The Dick Van Dyke Show” it was obvious that Rob and Laura were having hot sex. And Laura, as interpreted by Moore, was one hot mama. The stunningly beautiful Moore started a 1960s fashion trend when she appeared on camera in a pair of sexy Capri slacks and performed a somewhat provocative dance in her living room. The Capris were Moore’s idea: she didn’t want Laura to be seen doing the dishes in pearls and heels as other TV moms did. Throughout her career, Moore strove for truth in her portrayals. Moore’s most famous role was of course Mary Richards on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” (1970-1977). Once again Moore’s desire for truth had an effect on the show’s direction. Originally conceived as a divorced working woman, the Mary Richards who made it onto the air was a never married, sexually active working girl who turned down several marriage proposals, used contraception, and demanded equal pay for equal work. During the 1970s a character like Mary was unheard of on network television--Moore

954-565-7666 became a feminist icon. No less than Oprah Winfrey has stated that Moore’s portrayal of TV news producer Mary Richards inspired her to go into television. “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” was unafraid to tackle “uncomfortable” topics. In a 1973 episode titled “My Brother’s Keeper,” the brother of Mary’s landlord Phyllis (Cloris Leachman) is revealed to be gay--which everyone knows about except Phyllis. And in “Chuckles Bites the Dust” (1975), which many consider to be the show’s greatest episode, writers addressed how different people deal with death. During her post-sitcom career, Moore showed her serious side--and her incredible personal strength. She received an Oscar nomination for her role as a bereaved, overbearing mom in the film “Ordinary People” (1980)--she attended the Oscar ceremony soon after her only child was killed in an accidental shooting. Moore soldiered on because the alternative was unacceptable to her. A diabetic and a recovering alcoholic, Moore spoke openly of her struggles and tirelessly campaigned for funding in support of diabetes research---she was the International Chairman for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and testified before Congress for the cause. She was also involved in animal rights activism. Moore was never afraid to take chances in her choice of roles. In 2001 she starred in “Like Mother Like Son,” a TV movie in which she dived into the role of Santa Kimes, a real-life sociopathic con artist and murderer. Her most courageous role may have been her final one: at age 78 she was reunited with her “Mary Tyler Moore” co-stars for an episode of the sitcom “Hot in Cleveland.” Moore was quite ill by this time--she was legally blind during her final years, the result of her 40-year struggle against her diabetes. She went on camera barely able to see and gave her all. Mary Tyler Moore was one of a kind. We will never see her like again. At a time when terrible things are happening in our country, we can look back upon Moore’s life and see ourselves at our very best.

“shooTinG porn” vs. “maKinG porn”: J.W. Arnold

P

laywright Ronnie Larsen has a conundrum: Audiences confuse his new play, “Shooting Porn! Live on Stage!,” with his Off-Broadway hit, “Making Porn.” Already, fans are posting comments on online ticketing sites about how much they enjoyed the last production they saw of “Shooting Porn.” “If you live in Florida, you’ve never seen this play,” Larsen declared. “The confusion is a problem.” Unlike “Making Porn,” the fictional account of a gay-for-pay porn star’s experiences that has been produced hundreds of times around the world, “Shooting Porn” is the staged version of a documentary film about the porn industry Larsen produced and directed more than 20 years ago. That dramatization is receiving its Florida premiere this weekend. Larsen made the documentary after being approached by real-life porn actors who were in the audiences of “Making Porn” in Los Angeles. “They asked me how I found out about their stories,” Larsen recalled, “and they

46

2 .1.2017

Playwright Explains Difference invited me to their sets. After watching three or four movies being shot, I thought somebody should really capture what happens behind the scenes.” The documentary was an instant success, earning screenings on the gay and lesbian film festival circuit and eventually was commercially distributed. “This was before reality television,” Larsen said. “It was explicit, even graphic, and very honest. The closest comparison might be the ‘Real Sex’ series that used to air on HBO. I’m not going to say I was a pioneer, but 10 to 15 years ago, the porn industry had not been exposed like it has now.” But “Shooting Porn” should definitely not be confused with “The Office,” “Modern Family” or any of the popular “Housewives” reality shows. That’s when the playwright got the idea to turn the documentary into a stage show. The documentary script was transcribed almost verbatim and performed by six actors. “It’s really cool, all the action takes place on the stage, but there are cameras and monitors, also, so it feels like the audience is really there at the filming of a porn movie. It’s

easy to forget,” he explained, also pointing out the sex scenes are simulated, even if the on-stage nudity is not. Larsen recruited three New York actors for the production opening this weekend at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale, the first time the play has been staged in more than a decade. Adam Davenport, a chiseled model, actor and singer takes on the lead role. The DNA magazine cover model is definitely more than a pretty face, having even performed opera. “The cast has to be just right because of those monitors,” said Larsen, noting the video gets “up close and personal.” Empire Stage’s resident producer, David Gordon, a veteran of “Making Porn,” also takes the stage, along with Larsen, who portrays famed porn producer/drag personality Chi Chi LaRue. “Every time I do a play in Fort Lauderdale I seem to wind up in drag,” laughed Larsen, who donned wigs and dresses in both his plays, “All-Male Peep Show” and “Cocksucker: A Love Story,” mounted at Empire Stage.

Ronnie Larsen’s “Shooting Porn! Live on Stage!” takes audiences inside the gay porn industry. Submitted photo.

Ronnie Larsen’s “Shooting Porn! Live on Stage!” will be performed Feb. 9 – March 12 at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $35 – 50 at RonnieLarsen.com.

fter landing top honors for a big screen drama at the Golden Globe Awards, “Moonlight,” the melancholy drama about a gay African-American man in Miami’s gritty Liberty City neighborhood, was named film of the year last week by the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association (GALECA). More than 170 GALECA members from the U.S., Canada and U.K., including SFGN arts and entertainment editor J.W. Arnold, voted on the Dorian Awards last month to recognize the best in film and television. GALECA members also awarded the film, based on a play by Tarell Alvin McCraney, with five additional Dorian Awards: LGBTQ Film of the Year, director and screenplay nods for Barry Jenkins and best actor Mahershala Ali. Trevante Rhodes, nominated for actor alongside Ali, was given the “We’re Wilde About You!” Rising Star Award, named for the group’s patron saint, Oscar Wilde. Viola Davis, recently named by GALECA as one of the 10 Best Actresses of All Time, earned top film honors for her work in the Denzel Washington-directed screen adaptation of the late playwright August Wilson’s “Fences.” “La La Land,” the musical romance starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone and set against some of Los Angeles’ most iconic vistas, was named Visually Striking Film of the Year. Movies also notching wins: “Christine,” the devastating docudrama starring Rebecca Hall as ill-fated ‘70s newswoman Christine Chubbuck, Unsung Film of the Year; the lesbian-tinged spectacle, “The Handmaiden,” Foreign Language Film of the Year; and the Kate Winslet romp, “The Dressmaker,” Campy Flick of the Year. In TV categories, FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson” snagged GALECA’s Drama of the

Year and its costar Sarah Paulson took TV actress honors for her turn as prosecutor Marcia Clark. For the third year in a row, Amazon’s darkly comic family drama “Transparent” won for Comedy of the Year, LGBTQ Comedy and TV Actor of the Year, Jeffrey Tambor. Former “Daily Show” cast member Samantha Bee’s TBS hit, “Full Frontal,” was Current Affairs Show of the Year. Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of “Hamilton,” and SNL’s Kate McKinnon shared the Wilde Artist of the Year award, and McKinnon picked up a second trophy for Musical Performance as Hillary Clinton singing, “Hallelujah,” after losing the presidential election. Carrie Fisher was posthumously voted Wilde Wit of the Year and filmmaker John Waters was honored as Timeless Star, to which he responded in a statement: “A ‘Timeless Star’? Wow! Does that mean goodold or crazy-new? Either way, I’m thrilled and honored to be called a star no matter which side of the camera I choose to be on.” The writer/director of “Hairspray,” “Pink Flamingos,” “Polyester” and “Serial Mom” joins past honorees Jane Fonda, Sir Ian McKellen, George Takei, Lily Tomlin, Betty White and Cloris Leachman. According to president John Griffiths, television critic for US Weekly, “GALECA exists to bolster LGBTQ entertainment journalists as well as remind the world, and our at-risk youth, that ‘the gays’ have a distinct cultural history of helping put great movies and TV shows on everyone’s radar.” Since its inception in 2009, GALECA has bestowed Film of the Year honors to “Carol,” “Boyhood,” “12 Years a Slave,” “Argo,” “Weekend,” “I Am Love” and “A Single Man.”
