A Celebration of 40 Years of
Justice in Miami Lynare Robbins
T
he National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) celebrated its 40th birthday in Miami last Saturday with its “Taste of Justice” event. NCLR is a national legal organization headquartered in San Francisco committed to advancing the civil and human rights of LGBT people and their families through litigation, legislation, policy, and public education. A member of both NCLR’s National Leadership Council and National Family Law Advisory Council, local attorney and author Elizabeth Schwartz stated at the beginning of the program, “Working with NCLR over the years, on cases including challenging the bans against LGBTQ people marrying, adopting and getting birth certificates issued fairly, has been the great privilege of my career. But it’s the less celebrated cases, the critical help under the radar their stellar legal team has provided to many for decades, that has made the biggest impact. To see such a strong turnout to celebrate NCLR’s work, especially in the wake of Irma, is truly gratifying. NCLR has always had Florida’s back and it’s great to know Florida has NCLR’s back.” Ruth McFarlane’s Director of Development & Community Engagement, addressed the crowd by stating, “I love coming to Miami. This is where I came out and Miami is where I got engaged.” McFarlane then introduced
special guest, tennis star, activist and author, Martina Navratilova to the stage. Navratilova delivered an inspiring address, stating that the first call she made after the devastating 2016 presidential election was to Executive Director of NCLR, Kate Kendell asking, “What do we do now?” Navratilova reminded the lively crowd: “It is so great that we are here supporting. We have to work for change daily for 2018 and 2020 and make sure everyone is registered to vote and that they vote.” Navratilova also reminded the audience that “patriotism can include critique.” When Kendell, took the mic, her energy was contagious. “Fighting for justice is day-in and day-out work,” stated Kendell. According to Kendell, Miami is an important city for the work being done by NCLR as they have been involved with working in Florida, and specifically Miami for over 30 years. “We've worked with dozens of attorneys, partnered with a number of Florida organizations and advocated for thousands of LGBTQ Floridians. Miami is one of my favorite and one of our most important cities.” Kendell elaborated that NCLR has been involved with more litigated cases in Florida than any other state. “From the beginning of my 23-years with NCLR, first as Legal Director and then as MEMBER Executive Director, we have been involved as direct counsel or co-counsel in dozens of MEMBER
cases in Florida. We have also worked behind the scenes with attorneys and advocates on a whole range of issues in Florida that have improved the lives of LGBTQ residents,” Kendell said. When asked how the mission and the goals of NCLR have changed since 1977, Kendell answered, “The issues have evolved as we have gained both rights and visibility, but our central ethos remains that we will not leave anyone behind and will always be there to defend those who do not have resources to defend themselves.” According to Kendell, the pressing goals that the LGBTQ community is faced with today are transgender advocacy, protecting immigrants and assuring that the gains that the LGBTQ community has made is not eroded. The Miami NCLR Taste of Justice event had a goal of raising $40,000 to mark 40 years of NCLR’s groundbreaking advocacy. By the end of the evening they had raised $54,000 that NCLR says will help continue the organization’s fight for equality, both here in Florida and around the country. Gay SoFla Cosplayer Brings Disney Characters to Life Brittany Ferrendi
J
Stryker is at it again. Jonathan Stryker — who runs the only LGBT-focused anime and geek conventions in Florida, OUT Con and Okama Con — has taken to Instagram to do special cosplay weeks. Each week, Stryker cosplays as a different character every day. The themes range from Disney princes, to villains, to Cartoon Network characters and more. “Disney week jump-started as one of many ideas I had after I came back from a road trip,” he told SFGN. “I wanted to try a new approach at cosplay so I started with a hero week that was super well received on social media, and then Disney week blew up and is now everywhere worldwide.” For Disney prince week, Stryker cosplayed as fan favorites like Tarzan, Flynn Ryder, Hercules, Emperor Kuzco, Aladdin, Milo Thatch and even Simba. “It was just my attempt at trying something new and so far super well received. I've always wanted to be a prince," he said, laughing. Stryker puts all of his costumes together as fast as possible to get them out on time, even at the cost of his health. “When I commit to something, I make sure I use every minute of time off I have to make them. Sometimes I forget to eat and slave away all day trying to finish and shoot the costume on time.” But the results — though made under a short amount of time — are worth it. Each of Stryker’s photos gets thousands of likes on Instagram. Plus, you can’t beat the price. “It's not that expensive,” he said. “I go to

a little fabric store in Hialeah called Elias [Fabrics] that has some very nice fabrics for very cheap. If not I'll just thrift some pieces. The Flynn [Ryder] vest was free-99. I made everything from a chair cover. So yeah, some can take some money but others I use whatever I have at home to make.” And for these special cosplay-themed weeks, Stryker has no intention of stopping anytime soon. In fact, he already has his next few weeks planned. “As far as doing genderbend princesses, it'll definitely happen, just not anytime soon. I'm in the middle of Cartoon Network Week and will get busy on working on a horror movies week and Johnny Depp week after that for October since Halloween is coming up.”

Travel Agency Matches Dreams With Reach

ravel agents David Brams and Diane Hickey sponsored this week’s Coffee & Conversation program at Pride Center. The couple own World Cruises & Travel, a Tamarac based travel agency. Before their presentation, Hickey said they are not gay but had been to the Pride Center several times and “loved” the experience. “We’re here because we believe travel when done properly can promote tolerance,” said Hickey. Hickey said Hurricane Irma had brought people together out of necessity and that style of community doesn’t last. “Pretty soon people are back in traffic yelling at each other,” Hickey said. By exposing people to new ideas through unique travel experiences, World Cruises & Travel can make a difference at the grassroots level, Hickey said. Brams said the company offers three types of travel: individual, group and hosted. Hosted trips, Brams said, are the most fun. He listed Morocco, China, Cuba, Italy, Greece and Africa as travel destinations.

“Our tagline is ‘Beyond Your Dreams, Within Your Reach’,” Brams announced. Prior to the sponsor presentation, several Pride Center staff members grabbed the microphone. Rob Shore, HIV testing and outreach coordinator said 11 workdays were lost as a result of Hurricane Irma and the center needed to increase its testing numbers to comply with its Department of Health contract. Betty Gambino, representing the League of Women Voters, encouraged the senior group to call their U.S. Senators and tell them to vote against the Graham-Cassidy health care bill. Stonewall Gallery Gets Message Across Through Video John McDonald

ravis Bryant is a YouTube sensation who painfully describes his father’s reaction to his coming out as gay. “Don’t worry we can fix this,” Bryant’s father told him, offering to use funds set aside for college for conversion therapy instead. “That was the biggest slap in the face,” Bryant said. “That hurt me more than anything and it still hurts.” Bryant was 15 when he decided to tell his parents he is gay. Now 30 with more than 180,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel, Bryant is a successful content creator and unapologetic gay man. “I’d rather be hated for the person I am that loved for somebody I’m not,” he said. Bryant’s testimony is part of a new video exhibition at the Stonewall National Museum’s Wilton Manors gallery. “True Colors: In Our Own Words, Video Stories in Queer America” is on display at the gallery through November 5. “There’s still a lot of people that think it’s easy to come out,” remarked Judge Robert W. Lee after hearing Bryant’s video presentation. Judge Lee, chairperson of the Broward County Civil Court Division, was one of a dozen attendees at Friday night’s opening reception. It was a rescheduled reception due to Hurricane Irma. “We took everything over to the archives and boarded this gallery up,” said Chris Rudisill, executive director of Stonewall National Museum & Archives. Rudisill said the gallery suffered no damage and electricity was restored to allow the “True Colors” exhibit to continue. In addition to Bryant’s contribution, the exhibit
features stories from well-known celebrities Dan Savage and George Takei and inspiring messages from transgender and gender nonconforming individuals. “I saw that trans young people were using YouTube to share stories and that launched the idea,” said Rudisill. Some of the exhibit participants offer advice. For Kat Blaque, the comments section is never a good place to dwell. “In general comment sections tend to be a massive time suck that often results in fighting with total strangers and resolving absolutely nothing,” said Blaque, a transgender activist. Takei, the legendary actor of ‘Star Trek’ fame, asks for support for Rainbow Railroad, an organization assisting LGBT people escape the atrocities in Chechnya. There are reports of “honor killings” by relatives of gay men in the small Russian territory, Takei said. On a lighter note, Savage describes how he first met his husband Terry Miller at a nightclub. “I was staring at the cute boys dancing because I don’t dance,” Savage said. Miller was dancing and Savage was smitten. “I said you have a pretty mouth and he said the better to eat you with,” Savage recalled. “It was love at first innuendo.” The couple married in Canada in 2005 and have an adopted son. Their organization, It Gets Better Project, recently celebrated its seventh anniversary. It Gets Better serves as a vehicle for LGBT youth to combat bullying and prevent suicide. “You have to tough this period of your life out and know that the bigots don’t win,” Savage said.

Smart Ride Postponed Due to Irma
T
he Smart Ride has been postponed until the first quarter of 2018 due to hurricane Irma. The annual two-day 165-mile bicycle ride from Miami to Key West had been scheduled to take place Nov. 17-18. “The storm caused significant damage to the Keys and affected all of our benefiting agencies in some capacity,” said Glen Weinzimer, founder of the ride. “The safety of our participants remains our first concern.” Weinzimer had many concerns such as the resources in the Keys, debris left on the road, and damage to the national parks. “On top of that we need overnight housing in the Marathon area and right now every hotel is temporarily closed,” he said. Another concern – rotting seaweed.
SFGN Staff
Weinzimer said after Hurricane Wilma in 2005 participants were hit with the stench of rotting seaweed, which made it hard to ride with the windows up, let alone on a bicycle. “We know that the Smart Ride has to happen in the first quarter in order to provide the funding to our benefitting agencies that already budget money from this event,” he said. “But now is not the time to try and squeeze more money out of our community that has dug so deep to help friends and family, as well as themselves, to meet unexpected expenses from preparing for the storm, and of course the aftermath, replacement and repair of so much. It would be irresponsible for any nonprofit in our community to ask for things that do T:10” not ultimately help individuals meet their basic needs.”
But just because the event is postponed doesn’t mean riders should stop training. “We have encouraged our participants to continue to train, because it is great for stress, it’s great for their overall health, it helps the endorphins and of course because we will ride soon,” he said. “Being on the road also continues to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS.” Weinzimer hopes to have a special event planned for the original weekend of Nov. 17-18 to help refocus this year’s riders.

HIV Planning Council Report Sean McShee This article discusses the monthly meetings of the HIV Planning Council (HIVPC) and those of the South Florida AIDS Network (SFAN). The HIVPC is the planning body for Broward County’s Ryan White Care Program (Broward-RWC). SFAN is the advisory and networking body for the RWC program of the Florida Department of Health in Broward (FLDOH RWC). Each meeting welcomes newcomers. Broward RWC- HIVPC Resolving budget problems with the Food Bank and Food Voucher program dominated HIVPC’s August meeting. Leonard Jones, Broward-RWC, reported that the Food Bank and Voucher Program had “exceeded its fiscal capacity.” It could run out of its funds as early as the middle of November. The Planning Council would have to change its Food Bank and Voucher Program. This program serves people living with HIV with incomes less than or equal to 300 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). It provides its clients with one food unit that can be either a box of food or a voucher for food. From 2015 to 2017, the number of people in this program decreased by 11.1 percent. The increase occurred elsewhere. From March 1 through August 15, 2015, the program provided an average 3.42 of food boxes or food vouchers per client. From March 1 through August 15, 2017, that average had risen to 6.52 food boxes or vouchers per client. In order to keep this program open, the Planning Council would have to limit distribution of food boxes and vouchers. The Priority Setting and Resource Allocation Committee of the HIVPC had proposed one solution. The HIVPC discussed the committee’s proposal and HIVPC’s decision-making process. The Planning Council sent this issue back to the Priority Setting and Resource Allocation Committee for more work. It then set temporary annual limits for food boxes and vouchers as a temporary stopgap measure. The HIVPC grouped people in this program into three categories. Each category would
have a different limit of food boxes and vouchers. People with annual incomes of 0 to 150 percent of the FPL comprised the first group. Those with annual incomes of 151 to 250 percent of the FPL comprised the second. People with annual incomes of 251 to 300 percent of the FPL comprised the third group. People with annual incomes of 0 to 150 percent of the FPL could receive up to 18 food units. These 18 food units could be boxes of food, vouchers for food, or some combination of the two. No one could receive more than six food vouchers per year People with annual incomes of 151 to 250 percent of the FPL could receive up to 12 food units. These units can be a combination of food boxes and vouchers. No one could receive more than six food vouchers in a year. No changes will occur for those with annual incomes between 251 and 300 percent of the FPL. People could receive up to three food units. These units can be a combination of food boxes and vouchers. Arizona Supreme Court Rules to Affirm Parental Rights of Lesbian Couples (SFGN) On Tuesday the Arizona Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision affirming the equal rights of same-sex parents in the state. The issue is one that has been handled differently in different courts since the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, legalizing same-sex marriage. "It would be inconsistent with Obergefell to conclude that same-sex couples can legally marry but states can then deny them the same benefits of marriage afforded opposite-sex couples," the judges said in their opinion. "Legal parent status is, undoubtedly, a benefit of marriage." The Arizona Supreme court ruling in McLaughlin v. McLaughlin will require the state to extend the same presumptions of parentage to same-sex couples as it does to opposite-sex couples. Under Arizona law, the husband of a birth mother is

presumed to be the child’s legal parent even if the birth mother conceived through artificial insemination. But two lower courts in the state differed in their decisions when it came to married lesbian couples who conceive through artificial insemination. One court ruled that the birth mother’s wife should receive the same presumption of parentage that a husband would, while the other court did not, Slate.com reported. The McLaughlin v. McLaughlin ruling extends the presumption of parentage to women in same-sex marriages who conceive by artificial insemination that it does to men in opposite-sex marriages who do the same. "We ensure all children, and not just children born to opposite-sex spouses, have financial and emotional support from two parents and strong family units," the ruling states.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown Announces Run for Reelection (SFGN) Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) announced Monday that she’s running for reelection, releasing a campaign video promoting her stance against the Trump administration. “While Washington, D.C. falls apart, Oregonians are coming together,” Brown says in the video, “As your governor, it’s my job to make things better, to stand up to anyone who would take our rights away.” The Huffington Post reported that Brown’s specific actions against current administration policy include issuing her own executive order forbidding all state agencies from helping federal immigration officials apprehend undocumented immigrants, and barring state agencies from using public money to create a religious registry. Most recently, Brown worked with her state legislature to pass a law that
expands health care coverage to just about everyone in Oregon, regardless of income level, citizenship status or gender identity. And passed another law to ensure that no child goes uncovered. Once the laws are fully implemented, 95 percent of adults and 100 percent of kids will be covered. “These conversations around the Affordable Care Act, I was committed to expanding access to health care and not going backwards,” Brown told Huff Post in an August interview. “What is happening federally makes me want to fight, fight, fight.” Brown’s re-election run comes up in 2018. One well-funded Republican Oregon state Rep. Knute Buehler got a $500,000 contribution from billionaire Nike founder Phil Knight to vie for Brown’s seat. Knute has brought in another $500,000 in donations, $1 million in the first 30 days of his campaign. Oregon has no campaign finance limits.

Transgender Hockey Player Delays Hormone Treatment To Play Another Season (SFGN) Last year, at the age of 23, Harrison Brown retired from the National Women’s Hockey League to undergo hormone therapy and surgery as part of his gender transition. Earlier this month Browne, a transgender man, announced that he would delay his medical transition in order to sign with the New York Riveters and play another season in the NWHL. The league does not require that players identify as female, but does require that transgender male players not be on hormone therapy. Transgender women must have declared a female gender identity and have testosterone levels “within typical limits of women athletes,” NPR reported. The rules, a first of their kind, were prompted by Brown’s coming out to the league last year. "For myself, being stuck in the binary of men's and women's sports is not ideal,"
Browne said. "But I'm lucky enough to be part of a league that accepts me and wants me to feel as comfortable as I can. This is the first trans policy in professional sports, that's huge." To draft the new policy, the NWHL approached You Can Play, an organization that advocates for access to sports for LGBTQ people regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. "It's a women's league, so there was the balance of making sure that we are respecting women's sports and athletes' identities," said Chris Mosier, vice president of program development at You Can Play, "But we also wanted to make room for Harrison to make a social transition and asking people to address him in a way authentic to him. We had to put in writing where he fits in a league like the NWHL."

Brazilian Queer Art Exhibition Cancelled Amid Cries of Censorship (SFGN) The Queermuseu – Queer Museum an exhibition hosted at Santander Bank’s cultural Center in Porto Alegre, closed a month ahead of schedule due to protests from the Free Brazil Movement. The exhibit included work from by Brazilian artists Candido Portinari and Lygia Clark. And the Brazilian artistic community has called the protests a dangerous form of censorship, The Guardian reported. “It is an exhibition that deals with issues of identity,” the curator Gaudêncio Fidelis told the Guardian. “This is a frightening moment in Brazilian life.” The Movement, supported by evangelical Christians, accused the exhibition of promoting blasphemy, pedophilia, and bestiality. Fidelis denied the charges. “They are passing the limits of tolerance and we are giving them a response,” said
Silas Malafaia, an evangelical pastor. A video by protesters described one of two paintings by artist Bia Leite from a series called ‘Criança Viada’, or ‘Gay Children’, as “practically child prostitution”. The children are fully clothed in the painting and Fidelis said the accusation that it promotes pedophilia is unfounded. “The work is about bullying, about prejudice.” A painting which protesters said depicted an act of bestiality, Fidelis said was about colonialism. Fidelis found out the exhibition had been cancelled when Santander published a notice on Facebook. “We sincerely apologize to anyone who felt offended by any work that was part of the exhibition,” the bank said. Santander fully approved all the works prior to the exhibition, Fidelis said.

Bisexual activist talks gender,
sexual identity at FAU
Discussion part of university’s celebration of Bi Visibility Day Ryan Lynch
T
here was a feverish flurry of pens hitting paper Wednesday afternoon in one of Florida Atlantic University's conference rooms. But the students there weren’t taking a test.
Instead, bisexual activist Robyn Ochs was having them fill out an anonymous questionnaire about their sexual and gender identities, ranking certain aspects between 1 and 7. With that information, she would help give those participants in her Beyond Binaries session a better understanding of the identities of themselves and others. Ochs, who came to FAU for the fifth time, presented a talk on gender and sexual identities and how by being simplified, the importance of the individual experience is taken away. “FAU students are wonderful,” Ochs said following her third event of the day. “The students with whom I had the pleasure of interacting are comfortable having complex conversations. They have the tools to have those conversations, something I don’t always get to see.” That aspect came into play with the continuum activity, which follows the survey. Ochs had participants take the paper of another anonymous survey taker and follow how their sexual and gender identity preferences have shifted with time. In some cases, students followed a similar trend in how they identified, but there was a large variety of people who identified differently than others who had similar labels to them. Some of
those students saw a shift in what they previously thought about the constructs. “It’s always enlightening,” Victor Capellan, a 24-year old higher Education graduate student at FAU, said. “I always reflect on my own experience, and to see how others differ in their transition in and out of identities or disclosing or not is eye opening.” Capellan said despite going through that type of program twice previously, he always came away with something new. For 24-year old Business graduate student Janelle Irons, she became interested in the paths other's sexual and gender identities had taken. “For me, I wish I could see every paper because on my paper I was very intimate with the movements because I couldn't keep up with all 20 (people),” she said. “Watching the continuum shift and move, there were some things we all agreed on like hey monogamy's dope, but even with with monogamy not everyone is a 1, some are a two or three, meaning my monogamy could be very fluid. The best part was just watching people's movement from one half to another.” The activity, which Ochs calls a product of the community experiencing it and making additions, was designed to show the complexity of gender and sexual identities through the movements of

people. Several students in the open follow-up discussion said they had more empathy for the experience of others and came away with a different viewpoint. In terms of future progress, Ochs said that that’s one of the things she is most excited for. Drawing from her own experiences of coming out 41 years ago, she showed how much progress had been made and how much there is to come. “I didn’t know anyone who identified like me where I was and there was no Google,” Ochs said. “I couldn’t just go ‘oh
mother Google, tell me the answer to this.’” As for the future of education in making more progress, Ochs would like to see more progress in working gender identity courses and discussions in schools. The FAU students echoed her sentiment. “I think it’s extremely important because too many times we are put in this world and put in situations where this information would be extremely beneficial,” Capellan said. “I think that it has the potential to change a lot of lives and diminish a lot of hate in the world.”

Trump is a racist Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
I
f we let the very sick man who runs this country focus a debate today about who takes their knees during the national anthem, we will lose sight about the many Americans who have been brought to their knees in Houston, the Keys, and our territories, by hurricanes; who suffer every day by lame and limp federal relief efforts- and simply the massive natural devastation they encountered. From Puerto Rico to the Virgin Islands, the situation is calamitous; titanic and continuingthough not dominating every moment on the news any longer. Thank goodness CBS and 60 Minutes drew attention to the ongoing crisis last Sunday during its 50th anniversary show. The sheer fact that this idiot Trump can hold political rallies in Alabama while our citizens are drowning in pain and enduring untold stories of anguish from San Juan to Key Largo is abominable. But it allows him to shift the focus of his very real responsibilities and duties to our citizens. Nothing like a cheering crowd and attacking minority populations to boost your spirits. The only race issue we should face today is how soon we can run Trump from the Oval Office. You would think the elimination of transgender soldiers from our military warranted more than a tweet as well. However, America now has a president who is no longer the leader of the free world. He is a threat to it, toying with the notion of using our vast nuclear arsenals in 140 characters or less. Trump is a white Aryan racist who branded himself a long time ago, even before he started his crusade against President Obama on the birther issue. He is simply a man who has more comfort sleeping with the David Dukes of the world than walking with LeBron James. He will fuel any vehicle that gives him an opportunity to call out African Americans, activists, and dissidents as less than equal. The LGBTQ community, like Hollywood, will have its turn too. If you do not think Trump won’t come after you next, you are fooling yourself too. Trump is the kind of guy who thinks less of you because in his warped mind,

your acts are not normal and his are. You don’t live a decent life and he does. If he has ever appealed to you, it was to exploit political gain for himself. He hates your faggot ass- because that’s what you are to him and his neo Nazi, Ku Klux Klan loving comrades. Trump has no political party. He has no moral compass or underlying principles. He just seeks adulation and praise from wherever he can get it. Sadly, misguided Republican Party leaders thought ‘they’ controlled the House and Senate, and foolishly paid homage to Trump. But for his own greed and gain, the President will stomp on them too, caring less whose careers he crushes or ridicules in the process. The man who bragged about mastering the art of the deal is incapable of making one. He can’t run a White House staff, appoint competent people, or even control his temper. He is a man of rage who should only be angered by his own inefficiency, ineptness, and transparent incompetence. Any politician from either party that refuses to call Trump out as a narcissistic self indulgent presidentially ineffective racist is a weak-willed wimp and disgrace who should be voted out of office themselves. This is a matter of honor and not party. He has disgraced the office, diminished our nation’s reputation, and turned the moral bullying pulpit of our country into a bully’s guttural invectives a child would be spanked for. In next week’s SFGN, I will outline the articles of impeachment Trump could already be tried for, starting with his part in a conspiracy to collude with foreign agents to help win the election. And that’s just the beginning. In the meantime, let’s not worry about Trump. Inevitably, dictators and demons, imperialists and fascists, wind up shooting themselves by their own evil and greed. Here, in South Florida, let’s worry about getting our local economy working again. Let’s find a way to help our friends in the Keys, our sisters and brothers on the Islands, and all the Americans, regardless of whether they sing the national anthem, now in distress.

hen viewers last saw Will Horton, one of several gay characters on the iconic daytime drama "Days of Our Lives," he was brutally murdered, strangled to death by a serial killer. Viewers were shocked. Not only by Will's untimely demise, but by the brutality of Will's death. At the time Will was portrayed by Guy Wilson, a likable actor who never quite clicked with viewers—this may have contributed to the character's tragic end. But on September 15 Will rose from the dead, an occurrence not unusual on daytime soaps. Will's return is big news in the soap world—he was a beloved character to the show's millions of viewers. But even bigger news: Will's resurrection also marks the return to "Days of Our Lives" of Chandler Massey, the actor who played Will prior to Guy Wilson. It was Massey who enacted Will's coming out story, capturing the hearts of many as he did so. "Ultimately it was about timing," Massey said via phone as he spoke of his decision to return to the show. "I got my economics degree at UCLA, and I was never happy with Will dying. Will is a part of me—I was hoping for a chance to come back and finish his story." When Will is first seen, he's a ghostly figure, a figment in the imagination of Lucas, his alcoholic father. "He's presented as Lucas' ideal of Will," Massey explains, assuring us that Will is indeed alive, and that there will be a plausible explanation regarding his survival. "When the audience sees the real Will he's none of the things that Lucas imagined," Massey said. "He has grown up to be very much
like his mother Sammy, which is fun to play. Will can be bitchy, like Sammy." Massey noted that these characteristics are what will make his storylines equally fun for the audience. "Audacity can be very entertaining," he said. One of the storylines which viewers can expect is Will being reunited with ex-husband Sonny (Freddie Smith), who's now engaged to Paul (Christopher Sean). "Sonny was Will's first love," Massey explains. "Now that Sonny is with Paul, there will be problems." The actor notes the importance of the show having three contract players playing gay roles. "It's more representative of the world," he said. "When we have Donald Trump, a champion on exclusionism, in the White House, we need more shows, more books, more music to spread messages of love." Massey added that he takes his status as a gay icon in stride. "I really didn't have any idea that was happening," he said. "I was blown away when the character resonated with viewers as he did." He said that he has high hopes for the show's continued success. After reaching a recent low point in the ratings, viewership is once more moving upward. Massey credits much of this to the writing of Ron Carlivati, a soap veteran known for his strong prose—Carlivati was a recent hire on "Days of Our Lives." "Ron came in and saved it," Massey said. "Hopefully it will continue. I'm doing the best I can to make the best product and tell the best stories. Everyone on set is working to make the most meaningful characters. I hope that will show up on screen."
"Days of Our Lives" airs weekdays on NBC.

IF YOU NEED LEGAL HELP, WE CAN HELP.
Hunter Houston ames Franco and Maggie Gylenhaal are sensational in HBO's "The Deuce," a new, serialized docudrama about the birth and rise of New York's porn industry, circa 1971-72. Back then the city's Times Square district was a cesspool of cheap motels, dive bars and adult theaters with jizz stuck to the floors. "The Deuce" recreates this environment so effectively, viewers might be able to smell the stench of steam rising from the sidewalks while the "ladies" peddle their wares. Franco plays twins Vincent and Frankie who find themselves in debt to the mob for fifty grand--they end up in the porn biz in order to get out of debt. Gylenhaal co-stars as Candy, a tough-as-nails prostitute with a feminist streak--she has no qualms about telling a young john that this is nothing but a job to her. The poor kid just wants his birthday blowjob. "The Deuce" is as graphic and as rough as
Voices of Pride
the lives of its characters. Early in the first episode one call girl is seen giving a guy a hand-job in a phone booth--there's a brief shot of his fully erect manhood, one of two such shots seen in the freshman outing. But "The Deuce" is more than just dick and tit shots. The makers get into the hearts of these lost souls. Viewers will see the terror of "the girls" when they're beaten, or even cut, by abusive pimps. Some of the customers are sad sacks, more interested in company than in sex. "The Deuce" is disturbing yet fascinating. It might serve as the starting point for a conversation on legalizing sex work so as to protect the workers from the kinds of abuses depicted in the series.
