But no matter how successful this year’s festival is Wedner is aware that not everybody will be happy. “Will everybody love everything we do? Probably not,” she said. “But we have the full intention of growing this and making it better each year.” For now she’ll continue to look for sponsors and volunteers. Applications to volunteer will be available on their website April 1. “We need lots of volunteers,” she said. The festival will take place 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wilton Drive between 5 Points and Northeast 20th Street with the parade starting at 6:30 p.m. The event will also feature exhibits, activities and main stage entertainment.

fter last year’s financial losses it was uncertain if the Stonewall Street Festival would return this year. But now it’s official – the festival is coming back. “The City of Wilton Manors saw the amazing value of the festival,” said Ellen Wedner of Wedner and Friends Special Events Management and Marketing. “They took over both Stonewall and Halloween and put it out to bid.” Wedner’s company won the bid. She said there’s a lot of work to be done in a short amount of time, but she’s confident her company can make the event successful again. “We’re a little overwhelmed by the work, but we are bound and determined to make this happen. It’s a short amount of time, but we believe with the support already coming toward us that this can happen,” she said. “So far I’ve received a wonderful response from people that I meet on the street. People understand that this isn’t a tradition that should die. It should grow and prosper.” Wedner said she’s already secured the event’s

first sponsor and they’re looking for more. In the past Wedner’s company has produced such events as SAVE Dade Halloween Party, Winter Party Miami Beach, First Night Miami, the Miami Jewish Film Festival and the Fire Island Pines International

he White House held a high-visibility conference on bullying prevention March 10, with the President and First Lady calling on parents, teachers, students, and communities to address the problem together. Members of Congress also this week introduced several LGBT-inclusive bills designed to address bullying and harassment of students. In his opening remarks, President Obama said the one overarching goal of the conference was “to dispel the myth that bullying is just a harmless rite of passage or an inevitable part of growing up.” Instead, he said, “Bullying can have destructive consequences for our young people.” The President also noted that bullying is “more likely to affect kids that are seen as different, whether it’s because of the color of their skin, the clothes they wear, the disability they may have, or sexual orientation.” Attending the event were senior administration officials and approximately 150 students, parents, teachers, advocates, and others, including representatives from the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the National Center for Transgender Equality, and the Trevor Project. “No school can be a great school until it is first a safe school,” said Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. And Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius asserted, “Bullying is not an education problem or a health problem—it is a community problem.” Breakout sessions led by other administration officials discussed school policies and programs, campus and community programs, and cyberbullying. Although there were no sessions or speeches specific to anti-LGBT bullying, the need to address it came up numerous times in breakout sessions and speeches. Kevin Jennings, the openly gay Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS) at the Department of Education, and the founder of GLSEN, said in a call with reporters that bullying has reached a “tipping point” where it

“is no longer tolerable.” What pushed it to that point, he said, was the media attention surrounding a string of five suicides last fall related to anti-LGBT bullying. The event also served to launch the website StopBullying.gov, which consolidates federal anti-bullying resources for students, parents, educators, and others. On the homepage is a prominent rainbow-colored box titled “LGBT Bullying,” which links to LGBT-specific information and resources. The conference also highlighted several private, national campaigns to address bullying, including ones from the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, and the National PTA. MTV said it will launch a new coalition— of which the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will be part— to fight bullying and intolerance online. And Facebook said it will soon enhance the anti-bullying resources in its online Safety Center. It will also create a “Social Reporting” system so that, when people re-

port content that violates Facebook policies, harassing content can be removed quickly, and parents or teachers can be notified. Already, the administration has taken several steps to address bullying: The Departments of Education, Justice, HHS, Agriculture, Defense, and Interior formed a federal task force on bullying in 2009, and convened the first-ever National Summit on Bullying in August 2010. The Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools awarded $38.8 million in grants to 11 states in October as part of a new Safe and Supportive Schools program. The program requires states to survey students, family, and staff about school safety issues, including bullying, and direct grant money where there is the greatest need. The Department of Education issued guidance to all school officials in October 2010, reminding them that federal law requires schools to take action against bullying—including gender-based and sexual harassment of LGBT students.

The Department of Education issued a memo to all chief state school officers in December 2010, providing examples of effective state anti-bullying laws as a reference for developing or revising their own. HHS launched a Stop Bullying Now! campaign for students five to eighteen years old, with tool kits to help youth mentor younger children about bullying prevention. Members of Congress also announced several pieces of anti-bullying legislation this week. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) reintroduced the Safe Schools Improvement Act March 8, which would require schools and districts receiving federal funds to implement anti-bullying programs and to report data on incidents of bullying and harassment, including bullying done through electronic communication. The programs must specifically include bullying and harassment based on the actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity of students and those with whom they associate, among other attributes. A spokesperson for U.S. Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-CA) said she will soon introduce a House version of the bill, as she did last session. Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.) on March 10 reintroduced the Tyler Clementi Higher Education Anti-Harassment Act, which establishes similar anti-bullying requirements for colleges and universities receiving federal student aid. The bill is named after a gay Rutgers University student who committed suicide in September 2010 after two other students videotaped him in an intimate encounter with another man and broadcast the video online. Senator Al Franken (D-Minn.) and Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) introduce the Student Nondiscrimination Act (SNDA) March 10, which states that elementary and secondary schools must not discriminate against students on the basis of real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity in any program or activity receiving federal funds, or risk losing those funds. “Discrimination,” under SNDA, includes harassment, bullying, intimidation, and violence based on sexual orientation or gender identity.)

Throw away any medicine that is out of date or that you no longer need. Keep KALETRA and all medicines out of the reach of children. General information about KALETRA KALETRA does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. The long-term effects of KALETRA are not known at this time. People taking KALETRA may still get opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV-1 infection. Some of these conditions are pneumonia, herpes virus infections, and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections. he board of directors of Pride South Florida started an e-mail war with the mayor of Fort Lauderdale last Thursday, when they called him out in an open letter, for not being able to attend the opening ceremonies of Pridefest last Saturday. The verbal volleyball game was initiated when Pride Chair, Jacqui Charvet, brutalized Mayor Jack Seiler with finding time to attend the Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Parade, which was also held at noon Saturday. “Once again,” Charvet, wrote, “you are conveniently absent” from Pridefest. Seiler attended PrideFest in 2009 when it was held at Fort Lauderdale’s Holiday Park, but missed last year when it moved to Oakland Park’s Jaco Pastorius Park. In the e-mail Charvet linked Seiler with past Fort Lauderdale Mayor, Jim Naugle, who is despised by many in the LGBT community. She wrote that “we thought the blatant disdain and dislike of the GLBT community from the mayor’s office was going to disappear” with Seiler’s 2009 election. She observed that the “truthful observation and impression is that it is still alive and well from that very office.” Charvet concluded her stinging missive with the admonition that this is a “very, very sad statement to make.” She jointly signed the letter with Marc Hansen, Pride’s Vice President, and Joel Slotnick, the group’s treasurer. Seiler, taken aback by the attack, responded initially with a terse, two-sentence reply: “I am speechless. I am being attacked for a St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival?” Within minutes, at 8 p.m. last Thursday, Vice Chair Hansen sent a second e-mail scolding Seiler again, this time for “failing to read thoroughly” the grievances articulated by Charvet in the first letter. “Do you even care about us,” he wrote, asserting that Seiler was tossing Pridefest “aside like a group of nobodies.” Pointing out that he was a Fort Lauderdale homeowner, Hansen then accused Seiler of failing to investigate what the city of Fort Lauderdale lost when the venue was removed to its new location in Oakland Park, claiming parking revenues alone raised $28,000. Hansen, who sung the National Anthem at Pridefest this year, then asked Seiler if he pur-

posely chose the St. Patrick’s Day over Pride two years in a row. His letter concluded with a condemnation that the mayor’s reply was unprofessional and needed “more thought.” Two hours later, near 11p.m., the mayor replied, explaining to Hansen and others who would listen that he neither set the dates or times for the St. Patrick’s Day Festival. The mayor added that the time was exceptionally inconvenient for him, as it was in

the middle of an annual fatherdaughter camping expedition in Polk County. Seiler explained he was frustrated enough by having to leave his 12 year-old daughter for 8 hours in the middle of that trip to come home as it was. Seiler then took a shot at Earl Rynerson, a former mayoral candidate and local businessman, stating Hansen’s approach was just like “Rynerson- attack first, then ask questions and investigate later.” Seiler then blasted Hansen, stating “you made a big mistake and had no legal or factual basis to attack me.” Sarcastically ending his missive to Hansen, Seiler noted that he and his daughter “accept your apology in advance.” The war of words did not end there. The next morning, in a more peaceful tone, Hansen rebuked Seiler, saying he did not “attack” Seiler, but just made “observations.” He added that “we or I owe do not owe your daughter an apology. If your daughter needs

VAEP,D,@C-!A<B@-<HC-8EBW@

an apology, it should come from you.” Hansen ended his correspondence by reasserting his assessment that the mayor’s attitude toward Pridefest had been cavalier and “dismissive.” When the parties were contacted by SFGN the next day, Hansen explained that the entire exchange was just a “miscommunication.” “We believe we can iron out that miscommunication,” Hansen said. “We’re more than happy to have a private meeting with him to discuss it.” There is no word yet from Mayor Seiler when the meeting will take place. But Mayor Seiler, formerly a state representative from Wilton Manors, maintains an ongoing positive relationship with many leaders of the LGBT community, and has routinely been supported by gay political organizations in the past.) Editors’ note: A number of angry PrideFest patrons, upset at the feud, indicated they would be writing letters to SFGN protesting the actions of one or the other parties. None have reached out to us by press time. They will be online with this article when they come our way.

obert Lawrence Kohl, 34, of Wilton Manors was arrested by the Wilton Manors Police Department March 2 and charged with 2 counts of grand theft, 1 count of petit theft, and 1 count of cashing a forged check. Kohl used to do advertising sales for the Florida Agenda newspaper and Mark magazine. He then went to work at the popular Bar Code magazine, where management claimed they had ‘troubles’ with him as well. No charges have been filed in that incident. According to the police report leading to his arrest, Kohl first forged a check for $600 from his roommate Chris Caputo and then

known IT rep who was featured in an SFGN profile last summer. According to the same report, Kohl also cashed several bad checks at Northwest Savings Bank in Fort Lauderdale. The gayfriendly bank’s gay manager, David Feinberg, had to file the charges, but before doing so, had given Kohl 15 business days to correct the situation. Kohl failed to do so. According to the probable cause affidavit, the bank has photographs of each criminal transaction. Kohl has now bonded out of jail and is awaiting a trial date. hen it comes to prices nobody’s going to beat Owner Dale Saunders of Dale’s Wheels and Tires on Sunrise Blvd. “I don’t think there’s anyone in this town that can play with us in numbers or anything like that,” he said of the 20-year-old business. “Anything to do with front end work, there’s definitely not going to be anybody that competes with me. We have the best price in town.” Saunders goes on to explain that he doesn’t need specials because at his shop, everyday is a deal. “This may sound stupid, but what people advertise as a special is what we do every day,” he said. “My prices keep me in my business.” While other small businesses have struggled or gone out of business over the last few years Dale’s has flourished. But it’s not just the price that’s kept him in business it’s also his personal touch and connection with the community. “We also help people here more than the guy down the street. People know that,” he said, “I just try to keep you going whether you’re filthy loaded or dead broke. My job is to keep you going and do the right thing by you and that’s it.” Dale’s services include everything underneath the car including brakes, axles, shocks, alignments, drive shafts and of course tires. “We have a very big used tire business,”

he said. “We specialize in high grade quality used tires.” Dale explained that many customers don’t need new tires. Instead his used tires are not only cheaper, but last almost as long. “The quality of my used tires is second to none. I can show you used tires that you’ll think are new,” he said. “A lot of people can’t afford a $200 tire in this economy. But I sell $400 tires that cost $50 used and have 75 percent of the life.” Saunders is a 46-year-old father of 3 and lives in Coral Springs. He was born in Trinidad and moved to New York when he was 10-years-old. From there he moved to Florida at 16. Before the car business Saunders managed a bagel shop, but said he’s been playing with cars since he was 14-years-old. “From bagels to tires,” he said with a laugh. “I had friends in the car business at the time, and I just thought I could do it better, so I opened up my own place.” Besides great prices Saunders takes pride in his customer service. “I consider myself a people person and I think I am a help to the community,” Saunders said. He went on to explain that he’s not out there looking screw anybody over. Instead if a customer is down on their luck he’s more than willing to give them a break. “It just depends if I feel they’re being honest with me or trying to screw me. I have to feel it in here,” he said tapping his heart. “We have top mechanics. Some of them have 20 years of experience,” he said. Then after a chuckle he added: “plus the guy that owns this place is damn good himself.”

ou’re an openly gay investment banker and your office partner is the top revenue-producer in the company. The Golden Boy is talking to a group of colleagues within earshot. He says, “I did everything I could to land the account, except give the guy a blow job.” He looks at you, and says, “Hey, I should have brought you along. That’s your strength.” The group laughs. No one takes your complaints seriously, including Human Resources, and the big boss is getting angry that you’re giving the Golden Boy a hard time. No one wants to lose the top producer. If he leaves, he’ll take his clients with him. So, man up. You continue to solicit gay clients. As the openly gay person on the team, you’re assigned to bring in the money from the wealthy gay people you know and meet. Later, you leave in frustration because the

workplace feels too unwelcoming. Your gay clients learn of your feelings, and get angry at you for having them invest their money in a bank that is hostile to its gay employees. What should you have done? This story was told to Ray and me poolside, over lunch, in Fort Lauderdale by a gay investment banker two days ago. Soon, I’m flying to New York to moderate a prestigious panel on the work atmosphere of openly gay executives on Wall Street. It’s the first such gathering of its kind, organized by Todd Sears and openly gay Wall Street executives, and hosted this year by Deutsche Bank, with other banks to host the gathering in future years. The panelists represent Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citi, DB, and the Center for Work Life Policy. The audience consists of 135 LGBT people and allied bankers from Barclays, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Deutsche Bank, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and their guests. My questions for the panel are: What can be done to make it easier for LGBT people to come out of the closet on Wall Street, especially when the majority of the banks already have a 100 percent rating from the Human Rights Campaign on its Corporate Equality Index? Our friend in South Florida worked for a firm with such a perfect rating. What else is needed to stop the “blow job” comments from the Golden Boys? What’s the real environment like for openly LGBT Wall Street executives? Is it as good as the company’s HRC rating says? If not, should gay people be encouraging other gay people to invest in a bank that treats its gay and transgender employees poorly, even if it is what they’re paid to do? Why are there so few openly LGBT people on Wall Street, especially in the front office positions? What, on a day-to-day basis, makes it so scary to tell others that they are LGBT? What do they fear will happen to them?

Why should a LGBT Wall Street executive come out? What’s to be gained by telling others about your sexual orientation or your gender identity? Do the plusses outweigh the minuses? If so, what are the plusses, and how are they being communicated

to closeted gay and transgender executives by those who are out? “Out on Wall Street,” the brainchild of my friend, Todd Sears, who formerly was the creative genius behind the diversity initiatives at Credit Suisse and Merrill Lynch, is going to be an annual event. This historic first gathering will look at the Wall Street culture, how to attract and better serve gay clients, how to work effectively with gay community organizations, and how to recruit top gay and transgender talent. It’s only a beginning of the conversations that need to be had. This gathering is an opportunity for networking, socializing, building awareness and support among straight

executives, and creating better-tailored diversity initiatives for the future. There won’t be enough time to address my last and perhaps most important question at LGBT Leadership Conference, but I’d sure like to know how do you convince the boss that keeping the racist, homophobic, sexist, and obnoxious Golden Boy or Golden Girl in any company just because they make the most money is not good business. The boss needs to believe that sooner or later, the big money boy or girl is going to offend not only his or her colleagues, but also their clients. Obnoxious people who represent money shouldn’t get special treatment. If they break the rules, they should be disciplined. If they threaten to leave because they aren’t getting their way, they should be told to go. www.brian-mcnaught.com

ew York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult’s new novel, Sing You Home, has the potential to do for lesbian moms through books what Academy Award nominee The Kids Are All Right did through cinema: bring our lives and concerns to a mainstream audience in an engaging and sympathetic way. Picoult’s work is much more political than Kids, however, and seeks to educate its readers about some of the real-life legal and social barriers same-sex couples face. We should applaud her effort—even as one faux pas underscores the difficulties of understanding the full spectrum of LGBT identities. The story begins with protagonist Zoe married to her husband Max, and struggling to conceive a child. The strain of their fertility problems becomes too much, and they divorce. Later, Zoe finds herself unexpectedly in love with another woman, Vanessa. Max, meanwhile, falls back into the alcoholism he has long fought, until he finds help through a right-wing evangelical church. This sets up a confrontation with Zoe and Vanessa as they marry in Massachusetts and decide to start their own family in Rhode Island—and want to use the frozen embryos Zoe and Max had created and stored. A spunky fictional attorney from the real-life Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) plays a prominent role. The book also comes with a companion CD, a “soundtrack” with a song for each chapter, with lyrics by Picoult and music composed and sung by her friend Ellen Wilber. It sounds gimmicky, but in fact fits with

Zoe’s job as a music therapist. Picoult writes with convincing honesty on her Web site (jodipicoult.com) about her gay friends and her belief that being gay is as natural as being straight. “People are always afraid of the unknown,” she says. “I’ve noticed that most people who oppose gay rights don’t have a personal connection to someone who is gay.” This compelled her to write the book and “to create a lesbian character that readers could truly get to know.” In the process, she interviewed same-sex couples to learn more about coming out and the legal and social struggles they faced— and this shows in the believable characters and scenes she has developed. During the time she was writing the story, her own son came out as gay. She also did extensive research into antigay organizations and their rhetoric. She interviewed Jim Burroway, whose Box Turtle Bulletin site (boxturtlebulletin.com) tracks and exposes these groups. She also spoke with Melissa Fryrear, a representative from the anti-gay Focus on the Family. Picoult says on her Web site, “In the twenty years I’ve been doing research, I’ve never been as frustrated after an interview”—but it gave her an in-depth knowledge of anti-gay arguments against marriage equality and gay parents that makes her story all the more powerful. If the book sometimes feels jammed with too many Big Social Issues—same-sex marriage, alcoholism, abortion, suicidal teens— Picoult is a good enough writer to weave them into a coherent and compelling tale, rotating among the perspectives of Zoe,

Vanessa, and Max. There is one false step, however—and while it is a very small part of the book, it is worth noting. In one scene, Zoe has just admitted to Vanessa a secret from long ago. Vanessa was upset that Zoe had kept the information hidden, but they are now trying to make up. The exchange is from Zoe’s perspective: “I wasn’t trying to keep a secret from you,” I tell her. “But you should be able to. I love you so much that there’s nothing you could possibly tell me that would change that.” “I used to be a guy,” I say, straight-faced. “Deal breaker.” Vanessa laughs, and she leans forward and kisses me. It is a throwaway exchange, and nothing more is said on the topic—but it is an affront to all the transgender people who have ever started a relationship, or thought about doing so, and struggled over whether to disclose that they are transgender. Is such an admission so awful that it immediately ends a relationship? Taken to an extreme, this line of thinking leads to the “trans panic” defense employed to justify violent crimes against transgender people—as in the 2002 and 2008 murders of transgender women Gwen Araujo and Angie Zapata, when the assailants claimed

!!!

they were reacting in shock to the news that the person with whom they had a sexual relationship was transgender. I do not believe Picoult intended ill here— and there are those even within the LGB community who might make the same error. I hope other members of our community will, however, use this opportunity to educate rather than to condemn her. She has shown a skillful ability to absorb and explain LGB issues for a mainstream audience. After one week on the New York Times Bestseller List, Sing You Home is already at number two. If Picoult were now to put as much effort into understanding transgender issues as she has into LGB ones, might she then turn her prodigious talents to transgender themes in a future book? Given her large mainstream readership, that could be a very good thing. Read Sing You Home for Picoult’s terrific tale of lesbians fighting to become mothers in the face of hate from anti-LGBT groups— but spare a thought for the transgender community, which has even further to go to make their lives and concerns known.)
