Florida’s largest event for mature men and their admirers By Dennis Jozefowicz

S

ummer is here, and with it the heat, humidity, and threat of hurricanes gets greater by the week. Also, for those of us who choose to stay in South Florida, sometimes it becomes hard to find good events to attend. One event that happens every summer is A Celebration of Friends. This is a get-together of mature gay men and their admirers from all over the world. They come to South Florida for a weekend of socializing and having fun poolside. The event also raises money for local charity. Last year, they raised $10,000 for Tuesday’s Angels and the Pride Center at Equality Park. To give you an idea of what kind of event this is, the average age of roughly 700 men who attended last year was 60. The youngest being 21, and the oldest 91 years old! In all, about a dozen countries were represented. This is one of the largest events for mature men in the country, now in its tenth year. The events begin June 22 with early registration at the Fort Lauderdale

Stonewall Black and White Ball Celebrates 10 Years June 25 By Everett L. Burton

E

ach year Compass celebrates the Stonewall riots of 1969 with a black and white ball. After 10 years the ball is still going strong with no signs of slowing down. Among the many attendees there will be dignitaries, elected officials, as well as community members from South Florida and the Treasure Coast. “It’s amazing to see how far we have come in a decade and it is astounding. From the many ways we have to protect students of the LGBT lifestyle to the ways we are working towards family medical leave as well as spousal time off,” said Tony Plakas, executive director of Compass. “I would have to say that out of the entire state of Florida the two most progressive cities in the state is West Palm and Lake Worth. It’s just amazing to have the chance to commemorate the uprising at stonewall. And it’s just not a party. It’s an outreach to make this a better

place for everybody. Compass is the sixth largest LGBT community center in the country and we plan to keep it that way or better.” The annual event is not an easy feat. Last year it attracted more than 650 people and took between 60 and 80 volunteers to bring everything together. This year will feature a silent auction, full bar and the hottest music with DJ Josh, live entertainment coordinated by Lenore Productions and performances by The Palm Beach Drag Society, the cast of Chicago, artistic body painting by Georgette Pressler and more. More than 1000 are expected to dance the night a way to celebrate over 40 years of the LGBT rights movement. While the Stonewall Riots were arguably a spontaneous act of resistance against police

harassment, the 60s were a time of turbulent political and social change. Many excluded groups, including women and AfricanAmericans, were taking a coordinated and decisive stand against oppression. The Stonewall Riots sparked new, highly visible LGBT civil rights movements across America as the frustrations of the gay community had been exhausted and replaced by emotions they had never before experienced. Another aspect of the ball are two awards given out at the event. The first is the Compass Leadership Award, which recognizes the achievements of elected and appointed community leaders. The second is the Michael Brown Faces of the Community Award, named in memory of Michael Brown. It was established in 2008 to recognize an outstanding member of the commu-

nity whose dedication to grassroots organizing was instrumental in promoting pride, diversity and public awareness. Prior to the event there will be a Pride Business Alliance Mixer 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22 at the Granview Gardens Bed and Breakfast. And then after the ball an after party will take place at 11:30 p.m. at The Lounge in West Palm Beach. The event takes place June 25 at 8:30 p.m. at the Harriet Himmel Theater at CityPlace in West Palm Beach. Palm Beach casual, cocktail and costumed attire, in black and white, is encouraged. Tickets are $15 for Compass members; $25 presale and $30 at the door. To purchase tickets early, call Compass at 561-533-9699. Casting calls now open for volunteers. Contact julie@compassglcc.com for more information and to donate services or products to the silent auction.

A Boston-area Roman Catholic priest gave a speech preaching unconditional acceptance to parishioners at St. Cecilia’s Church, in Back Bay, Mass. This was the first mass after the Archbishop of Boston cancelled one scheduled for June 19. The reason? Rev. John J. Uzzi intended the mass to have a theme of “All Are Welcome.” Rev. Uzzi, going against the grain of the Church in terms of LGBT issues, preached about “acceptance for all.” Both of his Sunday, June 12 masses were appreciated and applauded by congregants. “You are welcome here, gay or straight, rich or poor, young or old, black or white. Here, you can all say, ‘I worship the God who made me as I am’,” Uzzi stated. Meanwhile, as lawmakers in Albany, N.Y. debate marriage equality for LGBT residents, Archbishop Timothy Dolan compared gay marriage to Communism. “Last time I consulted an atlas, it is clear we are living in New York…not in China or North Korea,” stated Dolan. “In those countries, government presumes daily to ‘redefine’ rights, relationships, values, and natural law. There, communiqués from the government can dictate the size of families, who lives and who dies, and what the very definition of ‘family’ and ‘marriage’ means.” Ironic…because China does not extend protections to LGBT people and the secretive North Korea claims there are no homosexuals there. The New York State Catholic Conference, their lobbying arm will not support gay marriage there. To that end they are uniting with Republican lawmakers. In Boston, during an interview, an archdiocese spokesman explained why they cancelled Rev. Uzzi’s mass. “This parish is a great example of people who are civil and exhibiting a real fellowship. But that doesn’t mean we can be put in a position where we look like we’re endorsing Gay Pride activities.”

Off the Wall

In the Name of the Father By Pier Angelo Guidugli

R

eligion, the root of all evil, was the biggest factor that prevented me from ever being close to my father. A deeply religious man, who truly lived according to Christian values, he had a tough time dealing with his first born, who, from an early age, proved to be rebellious, independent, stubborn, and gay. I never bought into the religious claptrap no matter how many hours I had to spend in Church, or taking part in family prayers. I had an adversarial relationship with religion, an inborn mistrust and dislike of the whole concept. I did not hesitate to express it loudly. Being punished for skipping Sunday services did nothing to deter me. In fact, it became very easy to “lose my religion,” to his lifelong dismay. As time went by, our differences spilled into politics, social issues, lifestyles, education and career choices, never agreeing on anything and always carrying a tremendous amount of tension anytime we were in the presence of one another. Ironically he never found it difficult to get on well with strangers, with his nephew, or other people’s kids. During my childhood I feared and obeyed him. I was always reading his temperament, assessing his mood when he arrived home from work, constantly preparing myself for our daily battle around the dinner table. Much later I came to the realization I loved him, but sadly I never got to know him. Looking back I can now say it was a waste of lives. Mine and his, plain misery for the sake of some ancient superstitious belief in an unknown god. I kept arguing with him that there was no convincing evidence our world was created by divine intervention, that a god intercedes in human affairs, or the complete absence of proof there is life after

death for that matter. The more I went on the further apart we grew. I know he truly loved me and cared for me, but he had no idea how to reach out or bend his stern views of what I should be or do. And I never made an effort to extend an olive branch. I never compromised. According to my mother we were two faces of the same coin. My father was the strong and silent type— with an emphasis on the silent. That is, until his short fuse exploded in anger. Very much like some people describe aspects of my personality. He was a stranger for most of

my life. I left home at a very early age to get away from him, to discover and explore the world on my own terms. To his credit he gave me the freedom I needed and craved.

He probably realized the battle was lost and therefore did not oppose my living halfway across the globe. For my part I chose to live with “no regrets.” Again, to his credit, he never lost touch with me. For thirty years, not a week went by, without receiving from him a handwritten letter. It didn’t matter that most of the times I didn’t bother to reply. They kept coming. He never gave up on me. Many of us are able to forgive our parents for perceived childhood wrongs once we see them as normal human beings who did the best they could raising us. When my father started to age he began to soften and my defenses dropped because I feared him less. But it wasn’t until I saw him as an old man slowly preparing for his own death that I was able to summon the strength to go up to him and tell him that I loved him. It was the first time in my adult life I ever said that to him. The gratitude, surprise and happiness I saw in his eyes and face, after I uttered those three magic words, instantly healed all the wounds of the past, on both sides. It was a brief moment, on a train station platform, but it reconciled a lifetime of turmoil, friction and pain. I think timing is everything when initiating a step toward reconciliation, and you don’t have to wait decades before doing it. I know that now. There might not be a tomorrow. My father passed away five years after our milestone moment. Knowing that I had already said the things

Many of us are able to forgive our parents for perceived childhood wrongs once we see them as normal human beings who did the best they could raising us.

that needed to be said, actually helped a great deal during the grieving process. Nothing was left unsaid, hence, leaving no room for regrets. Now when Father’s Day comes around, only good memories accompany the tears. I only wonder what our lives could have been if religion hadn’t kept us so far apart for so long.

he South Florida Gay News along with the South Florida chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, filed a lawsuit against the City of Fort Lauderdale and Chief of Police Frank Adderley Tuesday challenging Fort Lauderdale’s ban on all photography. The suit was filed by South Florida attorneys Norm Kent and Russell Cormican of Kent & Cormican PA. On Thursday the National Press Photographers Association also asked to join the lawsuit. The ban includes all amateur or professional photography within several hundred yards of the filming of the Hollywood movie Rock of Ages, starring Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Alec Baldwin. “The police have become unwitting agents of unconstitutionality,” says Kent, who also publishes SFGN. “Freedom of expression, which includes photography, cannot be controlled by movie studios from Hollywood,

even if Tom Cruise is in the film.” There are signs in several locations in downtown Fort Lauderdale stating, “Photography of this area is prohibited. Strictly enforced by FLPD. Violators subject to arrest.” Fort Lauderdale police have told at least two professional photographers they cannot shoot from a public area, and the policy precludes anyone from taking pictures, even as they dine at restaurants that are within a city block of Revolution, the nightclub movie producers have rented for the past few weeks. When asked about the signs, the police department stated it wasn’t an issue and no one has been arrested or cited for taking pictures. Even so Kent said the signs send a “direct chilling effect upon the exercise of First Amendment rights.”

Also in response to the photography ban Michael Koretzky, President of SPJ South Florida, is helping to stage a “lunch-in” to protest the ban 1 p.m. Friday at Tarpon Bend, the largest dining establishment on SW 2nd ST. Koretzky explains that that the “lunch-in” is not a formal protest because SPJ doesn’t want the city invoking its right to deny a protest permit. “We’re simply going downtown to have lunch with 100 of our closest friends and First Amendment allies,” he said. “We’re going to buy lots of food and take lots of pictures – of each other, of police, of buildings, of everything. Queer Speak 21st Century Quotes & Quips on Being Gay in America “I know how bad bullying can hurt. I was bullied when I was a kid. I’m sorry for what I said. I didn’t mean it. I never want to use my comedy to hurt anyone. My family knew what it was like to feel different. My brother was disabled and I lost my father to AIDS in 1987. My dad wasn’t gay but I also learned about homophobia then because of how people treated people who were sick with that. Parents should support and love their kids no matter what. Gay people deserve the same right to be happy in this country as everyone else. Our laws should support that. I hope that my fans gay, straight, whatever, forgive and I hope my family forgives me for this.” – Tracy Morgan, comedian and star of NBC’s 30 Rock, apologizing after a homophobic tirade during a recent performance

Audrey Hepburn Retrospective at Cinema Paradiso

15 films, six parties & two book signings celebrate an icon

F

By A. Sebastian Fortino ew Hollywood icons can be noted as much for their beauty and glamour as for their acting ability and work with the less-fortunate. Audrey Hepburn, won an Academy Award for her role in 1954’s Roman Holiday and received a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Oscar after her death in 1993 for work with UNICEF. Her passing, from appendiceal cancer at 63 was seen by many in both the entertainment and humanitarian communities as far too soon. In addition to the awards she received in the United States she won several European awards equivalent to the Academy of Motion Picture Sciences coveted golden man. Her graceful, elegant personal style, nurtured through collaboration with legendary style-house Givenchy, also garnered her several awards. Hepburn remains one of the few performers who won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award.

She appeared in many films throughout her career, and the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival has decided to honor her this year between June 20 and 26 at Cinema Paradiso. They will showcase 15 of her films, beginning with 1953’s War and Peace on Monday, and closing with the delightful How to Steal a Million, from 1966 on Thursday. Hepburn was not one to shy away from material considered risqué during her career. The Children’s Hour, from 1961, was based on Lillian Hellman’s play concerning a British girl’s boarding school. A young, wealthy student is disciplined and the bratty girl tells an aunt of an “unnatural relationship” between teachers Karen Wright played by Hepburn and Martha Dobie, played Shirley MacLaine. The film Charade, which paired her with dapper legend Cary Grant is perhaps one of her most exciting. In it she plays a wealthy young widow, pursued through the streets, squares, and mar-

kets of Paris by several men who want the fortune left to her by her late husband. However, the films most people fondly associated with Hepburn are those in which she plays a young woman protected by an older man. Roman Holiday, Love in the Afternoon, Sabrina and Funny Face are all roles in which – after much eloquent humor – she falls for her leading man. So electrifying were her performances with Gregory Peck, William Holden, and George Peppard that Hepburn often had to defend herself to the press. “Actually, you have to be a little bit in love with your leading man and vice versa. If you’re going to portray love, you have to feel it.You can’t do it any other way,” said Hepburn of an alleged affair with Gregory Peck. “But you don’t carry it beyond the set,” she added. In addition to the films being shown, there are more than what I have mentioned here, a book signing of Margaret Cardillo’s book Just Being Audrey will take place June 21 and June 22 the daughter of Cary Grant, Jennifer Grant will be on hand to sign Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of my Father about her life with the legendary star. Parties will accompany some screenings. Decadent Parisian Desserts will be served between Paris When it Sizzles and Robin and Marian Friday, June 24. On Saturday June 25,

between showings of Roman Holiday and Two for the Road a Rustic Pizza Party has been planned. On Sunday June 26 prior to the 11 a.m. showing of Breakfast of Tiffany’s come wearing your loudest, biggest pieces of jewelry for the 10 a.m. Breakfast at Tiffany’s Brunch. Please visit FLIFF.com for show times and ticketing information.

here’s no denying it, we’re out and proud in South Florida. In fact, in Fort Lauderdale, we’re so out and proud that we celebrate not one, but two Pride festivals each year. PrideFest is generally celebrated in the spring at Oakland Park’s Jaco Pastorius Park of late, while this weekend marks the return of the popular Stonewall Street Festival and Parade in that hub of homo life,Wilton Manors. While PrideFest benefits from the cooler temperatures and all those tourists and snowbirds, “traditionalists” staunchly defend the June event as the real tribute to the Stonewall Inn riots of 1969 that marked the beginning of the gay rights era. This year, the parade has again been pushed back to the evening hours, so we won’t be scraping up any melting drag queens or roasted leather daddies along the route. There will be plenty of entertainment, food and vendors, as well. In addition to the festival, the many gay bars and clubs in Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale have special parties planned for pride. Here’s a look at some of the highlights: Wednesday, June 15

Do you have anything planned for the weekend? If you don’t know where to go, or where the hotties are hiding, I’m pretty sure I can point you in the right direction.

F

eel like throwing something sharp through the air? Take a swing at something that won’t swing back? Scream your lungs out at and not have the police show up at your front door? Or even knock some balls around? Well if so you’re in luck because people do this every day at Sidelines Bar and Grille and get away with it! Scream along with all the other Heat and Marlins fans but only Laurie may throw peanuts at the television and take out some of that pent up aggression you’ve been storing on a friendly competition of darts. Sidelines is an experience unlike any other in Wilton Manors because it’s a sports bar where there’s no risk of getting bashed, kicked out, or made fun of. There’s no pretension or snootiness at Sidelines. The drinks are strong and affordable and the bartenders are laid back and accommodating. I go at least twice a week so I’ll see you there and don’t make fun of my pool playing skill, I’m working on it!

Boardwalk Bar, on Andrews Avenue is where you want to be if you’re looking for hot, buff, half naked muscle gods and also a potent drink. Boardwalk is always hosting appearances by famous porn stars who will dance on stage -- and for a price, on you. The bartenders aren’t bad to look at either, who by the end of the night shed their shirts, revealing their banging bodies. It gets hot in there so remember to tip them well too. Boardwalk even has an outside bar where you can continue drinking and even grab a bite to eat. If you haven’t spent every last dollar you have on Raul in the back room, I’d recommend the chicken wings, Shepherd’s Pie, or one of Boardwalk’s delicious burgers. Stonewall Pride is this Sunday in Wilton Manors, so if you haven’t turned into a hung over zombie from the past few weeks of non-stop partying, join in the fun—actually, if you’re a zombie, just come anyway. It kicks off at 4 p.m. and lasts until 9 p.m. But even after 9 there are plenty of bars around to keep the party going. And don’t forget to check out the Pride Parade down Wilton Drive at 6:30 p.m. Diamonds… Matt ;)

“I spent a lifetime in silence, which gives me a perspective,” Bellantoni told SFGN. “Being silent allows you to observe.” There is a certain calmness to Bellantoni. In his rocker-apropos black he observes his surroundings with care. By this I do not mean he gave off some feigned world-weary ennui during our two meetings. Instead it seemed he was thinking about his next song, performance, or band mates.Writing is of course a very private, soul-searching experience. “I take some time for me, some introspective time. I meet the audience. Then when I sit down at the piano Chuck, Charles and me, all exchange glances and we begin. For me I want the audience to see who I am, an unapologetic gay man on piano. Which is good, I feel it’s good to show the gay community what else a gay man can be,” said about bringing songs written in private to the public eye. A gay man can be very diverse, clearly. So can a group of musicians. Hanlon is a straight man, married with two kids. A Girl Named Chuck is XXXXX and they have

received much support by New Moon Bar, Wilton Drive’s main lesbian venue. Carol Moran has supported local performers for many…moons, pardon the cliché. Not for Nothing, in fact performs there on the first Saturday of each month. In terms of optimism, Bellantoni is very optimistic about South Florida and the Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors area for the arts and artists. Despite the cynicism even many locals have when they reflect on life here. “Don’t underestimate this town. It’s more dynamic than people think,” Bellantoni said. “You just have to look through the cracks and crevasses to find the diamonds.” Not for Nothing will appear on The Manors/New Moon Stage at 8 p.m. at the Sunday June 19 Stonewall Street Festival and Parade. They are also currently working on an album, which they hope will soon debut. Please visit StonewallWiltonManors.com for information on Pride performers and NewMoonBar.com for upcoming performances by Not for Nothing and other local talent.

“Queer Eye” star hosts annual festival By Mary Damiano Arts Editor

C

ity Theatre’s annual short play festival Summer Shorts has often been described as a theatrical “Saturday Night Live” because of the rapid succession of 10-minute plays and the ensemble cast who make lightening-fast character changes. This year, the company has embraced this comparison by adopting the “SNL” format even further, by having a host, an opening monologue of sorts, and a production number, before launching into one of their strongest programs in recent years. Jai Rodriguez, perhaps best known for his stint on “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” is the host of Summer Shorts, as well as part of the ensemble. Rodriguez is both easy on the eyes and easy to like, and he excels in

“Chronicles Simpkins Will Cut Your Ass,” about a playground tetherball champ with attitude to spare. Were there not two more worthwhile plays to produce? The cast and directing team turn in excellent work. Multiple Carbonell winner Gregg Weiner is a stand-out, giving powerful, sensitive performances “What Strong Fences Make” and “Aboard the Guy V. Molinari.” Ceci Fernandez is especially effective as a young mother who, despite a language barrier, finds a way to comfort her hospital roommate. New York-based actress Finnerty Steeves is poignant as a depressed woman fed up with life. Summer Shorts is a South Florida tradition, the beginning of the summer theatre season. It’s evolved quite a bit over its 16 years. Some devotees may like the changes, some may not. But this year the plays are strong, powerful and entertaining, making it a program well worth seeing. Summer Shorts runs through June 26 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami and June 30 through July 3 at Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. Fitness Guy By Peter Jackson, CPT side effects to testosterone supplementation Q: I am a healthy 31-year-old male interested in gaining some serious muscle with as little effort as possible. Do you see any problem with me doing a few cycles of testosterone and a steroid like deca-durabolin? A: I referred your question to my friend and colleague Nelson Vergel, author of the book “Testosterone:A Man’s Guide” for an expert opinion. Mr.Vergel’s response: I do not promote anabolic steroid use since it is illegal in the United States for anyone without a medically justified reason to use them. However, if you are going to use them anyway, I believe that it would be a good idea for you to learn all potential side effects, especially if you will not be frank with your doctor about it. This June... we’re changing the world!!!

For years, I have used a couple teaspoons of vinegar to stop occasional bouts of heartburn. Now, scientists have discovered vinegar is beneficial in promoting good heart health. Men’s Health editors report the study, conducted in Sweden, found that consuming 2 tablespoons of vinegar with a high-carb meal lowered blood sugar by an impressive 23 percent. Vinegar is packed with polyphenols, powerful chemicals that improve cardiovascular health. Besides combining antioxidant-loaded vinegar with olive oil for a salad dressing, you can use it to punch up your cooking. Add a splash of Balsamic vinegar to mayonnaise before spreading it on a sandwich, drizzle a few tablespoons of red or white wine vinegar on a hot pan of sautéed vegetables (especially caramelized onions) or throw a shot of sherry vinegar into your next bowl of tomato soup. AIDS and War: 3 Shows Tackle Them and Win Big AP Drama Writer

N

EW YORK (AP) This year’s Tony Awards honored “The Normal Heart” for its passionate look at the AIDS crisis. It also bestowed Tonys on “War Horse,” a play that showed the horror of the battlefield. But the night’s biggest prize went to a musical that mocked both. “The Book of Mormon” took home nine Tonys on Sunday including the prize for best musical propelled by a so-offensive-its-funny look at two naive missionaries who arrive in Uganda and find misery, gun-toting warlords, villages infected with HIV and people considering having sex with babies as a cure. It is as mischievous as Larry Kramer’s “The Normal Heart” is a heartfelt polemic and “War Horse” is charmingly simplistic. The fact that Broadway had room for all three views in the same season says something wonderful about theater in New York. “War Horse” a World War I tale about horses told with puppets and actors won five Tonys, including the best play award. The revival of “The Normal Heart” and “Anything Goes” both won three a piece. Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of the Emmy Award-winning “South Park,” found a kindred soul in Robert Lopez, who co-wrote the Tony-winning “Avenue Q,” and all three found themselves with a haul of

awards when they collaborated to gently mock Mormons and send-up Broadway itself. Collecting the best musical prize, a subdued Parker, who tied Josh Logan of South Pacific with four Tonys in one evening, said he’d be remiss if he didn’t thank his late book co-writer Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church. “You did it, Joseph! You got the Tony!” Parker said, looking skyward and holding up his award. Parker was asked backstage what he and his team will say if they get to heaven and God takes issue with the way they spoofed spiritual matters. “Look at the box office,” Parker replied. The show, which netted honors for best musical, best book, best direction of a musical for Casey Nicholaw and Parker, best score, best featured actress and four technical awards, came in with a leading 14 nominations and was the heavy favorite for the top musical prize. “We know what the best musical is it’s like taking a hooker to dinner,” comedian Chris Rock joked before reading the nominees and announcing the winner.

agent hot on the heels of a con man in “Catch Me If You Can,” took home his second Tony. His previous win was in 2005 for “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.” Sutton Foster won for best actress in a musical and gave a tearful speech. “It doesn’t feel like a job,” she said of the Cole Porter musical “Anything Goes,” which also won best musical revival and earned Kathleen Marshall an award for best choreography. Frances McDormand was declared the best leading actress in a play for portraying a South Boston blue-collar woman who reconnects with a high school boyfriend in the David LindsayAbaire play “Good People.” She wore a denim jacket to the ceremony. The top-directing prize for a play went to Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris for the weepy British import “War Horse.” “We quite like it when people cry,” Morris cracked backstage. Shows that left empty-handed included “The Scottsboro Boys,” which had 12 nominations, “Sister Act,” “The Merchant of Venice,” and “The Motherf---- With the Hat.” submitted photo

Mark Rylance won the best acting award for a play for his powerful role of Johnny “Rooster” Byron in Jez Butterworth’s “Jerusalem.” Just as he did three years ago when he won for “Boeing-Boeing,” Rylance quoted a poem by Louis Jenkins, an obscure poet from Minnesota. “Unlike flying or astral projection, walking through walls is a totally earth-related craft, but a lot more interesting than potmaking or driftwood lamps,” he said to the bemused crowd. When asked later why he had recited the poem, he said, “I don’t know. I was getting a little bored.” Norbert Leo Butz won for best actor in a musical. Butz, who plays a frumpy FBI
