However, economic worries and woes were forgotten Monday, July 18 as several studs, many whom serve as local bartenders stripped down to their skivvies. Bill’s Filling Station was able to present Tuesday’s Angels with a check for more than $16,000 after last year’s event. Despite the event taking place on a Monday night the bar was crowded to bid on bar tabs, resort packages, and the undies of the participating gents.

Troops March In Gay Pride Parade In San Diego

AN DIEGO -- About 200 active-duty troops and veterans wearing T-shirts advertising their branch of service marched Saturday in San Diego’s gay pride parade with American flags and rainbow banners, marking what is believed to be the first time a military contingent has participated in such an event in the U.S. Many of the active-duty troops said they were moved to come out because it is time to end the military’s ban on openly gay troops. The march came a day after a federal appeals court reinstated “don’t ask, don’t tell” but with a caveat that prevents the government from investigating or penalizing anyone who is openly gay. Drug Stops Hiv Among Straight Couples, Not Just Gays

A

TLANTA (AP) – An AIDS drug already shown to help prevent spread of the virus in gay men also works for heterosexual men and women, two studies in Africa found. Experts called it a breakthrough for the continent that has suffered most from AIDS. “These studies could help us to reach the tipping point in the HIV epidemic,” said Michael Sidibe, executive director of the United Nation’s AIDS program, in a statement Wednesday as the study results were announced. ``This is really a game changer,’’ said Dr. Jared Baeten, the University of Washington researcher who was a leader of one of the studies.

The prevention drug is Truvada, a pill already on pharmacy shelves to treat people with HIV. It’s made

by Gilead Sciences Inc. of Foster City, Calif.

Another Gilead drug, Viread, was also used in one of the two African studies.

Earlier research with Truvada found it prevented spread of HIV to uninfected gay men. But experts were thrilled Wednesday at the first compelling evidence that AIDS medications can prevent infection between men and women. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which gave advice last fall for use of the preventive drugs among gays, is now developing guidance for heterosexuals in this country.

At the same time, national and international health officials said it’s far from clear how preventive use of these drugs will play out. How many people would want to take a pill each day to reduce their risk of HIV infection? Would they stick with it? Would they become more sexually reckless?

Another issue: There already is a supply problem. In Africa, 6.6 million people are now on AIDS drugs, but 9 million people who are eligible for the treatment are on a waiting list, according to the World Health Organization. In the United States, many state assistance programs that help people access AIDS medications also have waiting lists.

The first of the new studies, run by the CDC, involved more than 1,200 men and women in Botswana. About half took Truvada each day. The other half got a fake pill.

An analysis of those who were believed to be regularly taking the pills found four of those on Truvada became infected with HIV, compared to 19 on the dummy pill. That means the drug lowered the risk of infection by roughly 78 percent, researchers said.

The second study was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and run by the University of Washington. It involved more than 4,700 heterosexual couples in Kenya and Uganda. In each couple, one partner had HIV and the other did not.

The uninfected were given either daily placebos or one of the Gilead pills Truvada or Viread.

The study found 13 HIV infections among those on Truvada, 18 in those on Viread, and 47 of those on dummy pills. So the medications reduced the risk of HIV infection by 62 percent to 73 percent, the researchers said. ``Our results provide clear evidence that this works in heterosexuals,’’ said Baeten, who co-chaired the study.

An independent review panel on Sunday said the benefit was clear-cut and stopped handing out placebos, instead offering the preventive drugs. Essentially, they deemed it unethical to withhold the medications from people who had been on placebo, Baeten said.

In both studies, participants also were offered counseling and free condoms, which may help explain the relatively low overall infection rate.

The studies were to be announced at an AIDS conference in Rome next week. But following the recommendation of the review panel to the University of Washington study, both study teams made hasty decisions to release the results.

‘Leatherman of the Century’ Tells His Tale

huck Renslow, at 82, is one of our community’s undisputed greats. During a business career that spanned more than fifty years, Renslow started and/ or owned more than two dozen businesses in the Chicago area, including bars, discos, photo studios, gyms, bathhouses, newspapers (Chicago’s GayLife), hotels, restaurants and bookstores. Renslow led the LGBT community as it emerged as a major force in Chicago politics. Leather folk worldwide know Renslow as the owner of the legendary Gold Coast, Chicago’s first leather bar; owner of the Chicago Eagle and Man’s Country; founding member of the Second City Mo-

Gay Adoption Case Making Way to Supreme Court

ambda Legal Defense is taking its fight for same-sex families to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The case, Adar v. Darlene Smith, involves a gay male couple – Oren Adar and Mickey Ray Smith – who sought an amended birth certificate for the boy they adopted in the state of New York. The boy was born in 2005 in Louisiana, so the couple had to seek an amended birth certificate from the state of Louisiana. Revised birth certificates identifying a child’s adoptive parents are often needed to verify family relationships to schools, medical providers, insurers, and even law enforcement officials.

Although Louisiana has a statute that entitles an adopted child to receive a revised birth certificate with the names of their adoptive parents, the state’s registrar and director of vital records, Darlene Smith, refused to issue one for the gay couple’s son.

Registrar Smith said she could not do so because the state also has a law prohibiting unmarried couples from adopting.

The 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals agreed with the state, ruling that the U.S. Constitution’s “full faith and credit” clause does not require a state official to accept the legitima-

cy of an adoption granted in another state.

The legal question is whether a state’s “public policy” –in this case, a public policy against allowing unmarried couples to adopt-- trumps the U.S. Constitution’s “full faith and credit clause.” In its petition to the Supreme Court, Lambda also urges that Louisiana’s treatment of the Adar-Smith family violates the equal protection clause.

Gay legal activists have long expected the issue of the “full faith and credit” clause to come up in a gay-related case before the U.S. Supreme Court, but most probably expected it would be on a case involving one state’s refusal to recognize a marriage license granted by another state.

Instead, notes Lambda, the issue is coming before the court in a case involving the rights of a child.

“Louisiana may not treat adopted children themselves differently based on the marital status of their legal parents,” said Ken Upton, the Lambda attorney representing the couple out of Lambda’s South Central Regional office in Dallas. “We have long since abandoned the notion that the government can punish children to express disapproval of their parents or their families.”

In its petition to the Supreme Court, filed July 11, Lambda says non-judicial officials

of a state should not be able to deny rights to a child by selectively disregarding court judgments issued in other states “based on policy assessments about the merits of those judgments.” And it said the 5th Circuit majority was wrong to say that only state courts – not state officials – owe full faith and credit to court rulings in other states.

Lambda also argues that the 5th Circuit majority “plainly analyzed the wrong statute” in rendering its decision. Adar v. Smith,

it says, was not a challenge to Louisiana’s law barring adoption by unmarried couples.

It was a challenge to the state’s law concerning vital records.

“The two are not the same,” writes Upton in the petition. “Louisiana’s goals of promoting its view of stable parental relationships in deciding who can adopt in the state is irrelevant because Petitioners are already the adoptive parents and Louisiana cannot change that.”

ittsburgh linebacker James Harrison apologized Thursday for using an anti-gay slur to refer to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in an interview with “Men’s Journal,” and says his critical statements about teammates were taken out of context.

Harrison posted a statement on his Twitter account, with the message: “This statement will be my only response to the Men’s Journal article.”

In the article, the Steelers’ star criticized Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and running back Rashard Mendenhall for their play in last season’s Super Bowl loss to Green Bay. Harrison called Mendenhall a “fumble machine” for his fourth-quarter turnover and said Roethlisberger needed to “stop trying to act like Peyton Manning.”

“I did make comments about my teammates when I was talking about the emotional Super Bowl loss, but the handful of words that were used and heavily publicized yesterday were pulled out of a long conversation and the context was lost,” Harrison said in his statement. Obviously, I would never say that it was all Ben’s or Rashard’s fault that we lost the Super Bowl. That

would be ridiculous. Both Ben and Rashard are great players and great teammates.”

Harrison’s harshest words in the article were aimed at Goodell, whom he called a “crook” and a “devil.” He also said in the article of Goodell, “I hate him and will never respect him.”

Harrison did not mention those insults, but did say the anti-gay slur directed at the commissioner “was not intended to be derogatory against gay people in any way. It was careless use of a slang word and I apologize to all who were offended by the remark. I am not a homophobic bigot, and I would never advocate intolerance of gay people.”

Harrison was one of the most vocal critics of the NFL’s crackdown last season on illegal hits. He was also heavily fined by the commissioner for delivering illegal shots. The 2008 AP Defensive Player of the Year was docked $100,000 for illegal hits last season.

In his statement Thursday night, Harrison again said that more penalties and fines for illegal hits will not make the game safer.

“I believe that the league may have been feeling increasing pressure about injuries and concussions last year, and that they panicked and put rules in place that weren’t fully thought out.”

Obama Needs to ‘Evolve’ Already Support Gay Marriage

hen the Arab Spring erupted earlier this year, President Obama faced a daunting challenge. How do you balance the dreams and aspirations of millions with the relative safety and comfort of the status quo?

Unfortunately, as the uprisings grew, the administration’s tepid and inconsistent comments to those dreaming of freedom seemed to lack courage – or, dare I say, hope they could believe in. So, by the time Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was forced from power – a previously inconceivable idea – the dreamers had written their own history without any noteworthy help from the American President.

A revolution had passed before Barack Obama’s eyes and he was relegated to the sidelines. And the dreamers realized that they didn’t need President Obama in order to take hope and change into their own hands.

Last week, in a very different kind of revolution, the same thing happened. New York

passed a marriage equality bill – once again, a previously inconceivable idea – and the dreamers wrote their own history, with President Obama on the sidelines making tepid and inconsistent comments, afraid to be a leader.

The passage of a marriage equality bill in New York is a game changer, a tipping point in the battle for increased civil rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. And the eve of the bill’s passage would have been a natural time for the president to step up and endorse it.

Forty-two years ago, LGBT people couldn’t legally dance together or share a drink in a New York bar. Last weekend – coincidentally, but appropriately, Pride weekend in New York City – they were dancing in the streets, proposing during parades, and toasting marriages to come.

A majority of Americans now support the freedom to marry. Dick Cheney and Laura Bush are more progressive than the president on this issue and, sadly, the president’s personal views are indistinguishable

Last week, with his anti-equality position unchanged, the President had no problem flying into New York City to collect large checks from hundreds of LGBT supporters at a fundraiser. And, in a speech at the event, he oddly tried to allude to the then-pending legislation by suggesting that marriage was a states’ rights issue. It was a jaw-dropping argument to hear. Such experiments haven’t exactly worked out so well when it comes to civil rights and marriage, and have largely fueled the right-wing talking points that avoid social progress.

Some of the rich LGBT donors at the New York fundraiser like to tout that President Obama is the most pro-gay president in U.S. history and his critics should cut him some slack. However, our last president tried to write LGBT families out of the U.S. Constitution and the President before him signed both “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) into law. The bar is pretty low and the American Dream requires

that we expect more from our presidents.

Presidents lead. They take principled stands, based on their values and convictions, and then they work to create a better world. And this president promised his LGBT supporters on the campaign trail that he would be their “fierce advocate.” We took him at his word.

Sadly, he isn’t living up to his promises.

But he has a new opportunity today to do the right thing – a new chance to lead the revolution. Today, the Obama Administration is hosting a Pride Month reception at the White House, inviting LGBT advocates and activists from across the country into the Obamas’ home. The president’s unwillingness to publicly endorse full equality for LGBT Americans will continue to dog him throughout the re-election campaign -- we’ll make sure of that. So what better day than today to announce the president’s evolution?

We, the dreamers, are writing our own history. And we are expanding the American Dream to everyone until we secure full federal equality for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans. It’d be nice if the president would open his heart, steel his convictions, “evolve,” and join us.

The fact is that our political leaders in America have spent precious time, valuable resources, and millions of dollars settling the issue of gay rights and equality. If we fail to allow one group of people equal rights then we are failing all those other groups fighting passionately for equality who came before us and for all the other groups who will come after us.

If you are against gay marriage then don’t marry a “gay” person. Being homosexual in Florida is not a crime, so why then does our government have the desire to put restrictions on being united with whom we

love? These laws all shout hatred. We as American’s often pride ourselves on being a democracy that tries to distinguish the separation of church from state. This is just one important reason why we are a country itself in the first place. If we continue to discriminate against couples who simply want the same equal and legal rights as their fellow citizens then we too are going against this idea that we claim as a significant founding principle. It should not matter whether homosexuality is against one’s religious beliefs or not, because gay marriage is not a religious question, it’s a legal question. It’s a question that defines what it is to be an American whether you believe every citizen deserves to be treated equally or not.

The Oxford English Dictionary, noble father of our language and model of all dictionaries, will not print the eagerly awaited third edition, in the making for 21 years, but it will be released in a digital version.

The decision is a purely economic one.

The complete OED is made of 20 volumes and has never turned a profit from the day, a century and half ago, that the first edition was published. The condensed edition, the one most of us are familiar with, is called Oxford Dictionary of English.

The idea to collect in alphabetical order the words of the English language started to spread in the 16th century. The first real dictionary was compiled and published by Samuel Johnson in 1755 and it remained the standard for 150 years. The plan of the Oxford English Dictionary was hatched in 1879 at Oxford University. The first complete collection was released in 1928. It took 61 years to update it and it is still on sale today.

The OED contains 291,500 words and 2.5 million sources, references and quotations.

Perhaps one of the best and most interesting ways to chronicle and monitor the progress made by the gay community is to look up old dictionaries and see how language, and perceptions, have changed though the years.

For example, the 1989 edition of the Oxford English Dictionary defines gay as follows: • Addicted to social pleasures and dissipations. Often euphemistically: Of loose or immoral life.

Esp. in gay dog, a man given to reveling or self-indulgence; Not quite flattering. Certainly not politically correct by today’s standards.

In 2011, dictionaries entries for gay as a noun, will simply read: • Someone who practices homosexuality;

having a sexual attraction to persons of the same sex. Much better.

The earliest the dictionary has for it is 1935 (as an adjective), and 1971 (as a noun) — though the word goes back at least as far as the 14th century in English in its original sense of “light-hearted, exuberantly cheerful, merry”.

In 1938 “Bringing Up Baby” was the first film to use the word gay to mean homosexual. Cary Grant, in one scene, ends up having to wear a lady’s robe. When another character asks about why he is wearing that, he responds, ad-libbing: “Because I just went gay”. At the time, audiences didn’t get the reference so the line was thought to have meant “I just decided to be carefree.”

The word gay is now standard in its use to refer to people whose orientation is to the same sex, in large part because it is the term that most gay people prefer in referring to themselves. Gay is distinguished from homosexual primarily by the emphasis it places on the cultural and social aspects of homosexuality as opposed to sexual practice.

Along with gay the other word that has gone through a dictionary’s metamorphosis of sort is: Homosexuality.

In 1923 Merriam Webster’s referred to it as: “morbid sexual passion for one of the same sex.”

In 1934 it changed it to: “eroticism for one of the same sex”.

In 2011 it says: “sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one’s own sex”.

We can, however, find consolation for the disparaging references of the early days in how even Heterosexuality was defined in 1901 by the Dorland’s Medical Dictionary: “Abnormal or perverted appetite toward the opposite sex.”

Something we can all agree with!

The constant evolution of dictionaries is fundamental, especially in a democracy. In his famous novel “1984”, still relevant sixty years after its publication, George Orwell introduces the Dictionary of Newspeak. It is designed to reduce interpretability in society by cutting out the number of words listed. Every word excluded is not a word

LGBT Rights Still Have a Long Way to Go

he passage of a resolution by the United Nations Human Rights Council last month declaring that LGBT people around the world should be afforded equal protections with all other human beings left me overjoyed, yet still full of consternation.

The measure’s passage represented a great victory for human rights advocates who pressed for it, but the very need for such an action underscored how dangerous it is to be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender in many parts of the world, including the United States of America. Homosexuality remains illegal in 76 of the globe’s countries, and it is punishable by death in five of them.

In the United States, where the nation’s sodomy laws were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003, discrimination and violence against LGBT people continues to run rampant. An analysis of 14 years of FBI hate crime data by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project in late 2010 revealed that LGBT people are more than twice as likely to be violently attacked as Jews and blacks, more than four times as likely as Muslims and 14 times as likely as Latinos.

In a press release by the U.S. Department of State, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called the U.N. resolution a

“historic moment to highlight the human rights abuses and violations that LGBT people face around the world based solely on whom they are and whom they love.” She noted that torture, rape, criminal proceedings and killings are sanctioned all over the world by religions that condemn anyone who does not adhere to traditional heterosexual norms regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.

The controversial resolution, which was proposed by South Africa, passed narrowly on a vote of 23 to 19. Although the measure was supported by the U.S. and other Western countries, it was opposed by African and Arab countries where the prosecution and persecution of LGBT individuals is the most severe. Three countries, including China, abstained from voting.

Reaction to the U.N. resolution from opponents of LGBT rights was telling.

Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, the Vatican’s representative to the Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva, denounced it as a maneuver in an international agenda to restrict the freedom of churches. Tomasi claimed the church opposes violence against homosexual behavior and punishment based on a person’s “feelings and thoughts,” but he condemned the measure as detrimental to society and

likened laws against homosexuality to prohibitions against incest, pedophilia and rape.

In Ghana, the Rev. Joseph Bosoma of the Sunyani Central Ebenezer Presbyterian Church called on President John Evans Atta Mills to crack down on homosexuality in the country, warning that society was on the verge of a punishment similar to what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah in Biblical times. The president assured the pastor that the government would take action to check homosexual activity.

Similarly, Alex McFarland of the American Family Association, the group that is sponsoring Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s The Response Prayer Rally in Houston on Aug. 6, declared recently that the world is now in The Latter Days, in response to the passage of marriage equality in New York. He argued that LGBT rights are not the equiva-

lent of human rights.

Soulforce, an LGBT group that monitors conservative religious groups, noted that another host of Perry’s rally, Lou Engle, the leader of The Call, is one of three evangelical leaders in the U.S. who supported the Kill the Gays bill in Uganda.

For three decades the greatest impediment to the LGBT rights movement has been Christian Rights groups and its leaders who have seized on the concept of a “homosexual agenda” bent on destroying American culture and society. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, declared the fight against LGBT rights as a “second civil war.”

Dance Company Pushes Boundaries with Eclectic Program

hen choreographer William Crowley’s Next Step Dance Company takes the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater stage this weekend, he and his dancers will challenge many of the conventions of traditional modern dance with an eclectic and unconventional program entitled, “Evolution.”

The company’s annual concert includes: “Ghost Light,” a traditional ballet inspired by the myth of the ghost light and the theatre muse; “Duende,” a solo embodying the dark creative force deeply rooted in Spanish culture; “Surrender,” a female trio exploring the redemptive spiritual journey from resistance to acceptance; “In a (Purple) Funk,” a male solo inspired by a live R&B concert recording; “Sirens,” an ensemble work based on the myth of the sirens from Homer’s “The Odyssey;” and “Que Lio,” an ensemble work of heartbreak and unrequited love set to music by Puerto Rican singer Hector Lavoe.

Crowley says of the program, “It’s our most diverse concert in eight years. We have a ballet piece, a modern contemporary dance, funky jazz solo and we delve into Greek mythology and round it out with salsa. I can’t imagine there isn’t one thing the audience can tap in to over the course of the evening.”

But, it’s a pas de deux by guest choreographer Pioneer Winter that he’s most excited to stage this year. While traditional pas de deux’s feature male and female dancers, this work features two males and explores the passions of same-sex relationships.

“I think what’s acceptable to be performed on stage or seen in the public eye has become more accessible to a broader audience in recent years. We’re glad to be a part of that movement,” Crowley explains.

“Pioneer is of a younger generation and he’s still finding his voice as a choreographer, but I believe in his message and vision and this is a good fit for our company.”

The pas de deux, which Winter premiered as part of a larger work called “Phallusy” at Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center this spring, presents audiences with a visceral form of dance depicting the romantic passion of two adults and the struggle to rekindle that passion in the midst of sexual and social obstacles.

While Winter’s style is different from Crowley’s, audiences will identify with the shared intent of both choreographers.

“Sometimes it’s intangible, nevertheless, the human connection is there,” he explains.

Crowley characterizes Next Step Dance as a “pick up” company, with dancers assembled and rehearsals held just weeks prior to the group’s one annual performance. Crowley maintains a busy teaching schedule throughout the academic year, but has worked with many of the same dancers for many seasons, allowing the program to come together with just a few rehearsals.

“We really only have four to six weeks get into the studio and rehearse and reacquaint ourselves with the material,” he says, “but most of my dancers have been with me a while, so we put it together quickly.”

Crowley also credits the staff of the Broward Center for their support, which makes performances by local artists possible through the Arts Access program. In addition to assistance with production costs, the technical and administrative staff of the Center help to make the performance a reality.

“I really am blessed,” he says. “They are such a top-notch professional organization and their assistance allows me to focus more on my work in the studio and not worry so much about all the little details it takes to mount our concert.”

Political Porn Parody Jet Set Productions has cast adult actor Lucky Daniels in the role of a politician who gets caught with his…political pecker popping out! Daniels will play the lead in “Anthony’s Weener.” The film will play – and by play we mean hot guys playing – on the recent controversy surrounding certain erotic electronic images by a certain senator from New York.

‘Mamma Mia!’ Shows Longevity of ABBA’s Upbeat Music typical Broadway fare, but what accounts for the enduring popularity of the show, hen former ABBA singers which opened to mixed critical reviews a Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus adapted the music of decade ago?

Marc Scott, a popular local DJ known for his retro sound, agrees with Amar.

“ABBA’s music is simplistic. It has words and music people can relate to.

It’s upbeat and happy and takes people to a happy place….and it’s not just the gay community. Everybody seems to love their music across the board,” Scott says.

As a DJ and producer for more than 28 years, he prefers some of the band’s more sophisticated songs, such as “The Visitors,” which is also known as “Crackin’ Up.” He doesn’t dispute the popularity of “Dancing Queen,” but enjoys the challenge of mixing the band’s other songs.

“They have a lot better music than ‘Dancing Queen’,” he says, “but that one is the crowd pleaser that gets them up from their seats.”

Still, 25 of the band’s songs were strung together for the Broadway spectacle and no one—except maybe composers Andersson and Ulvaeus—knows the show’s score better than music director Bill Congdon, who has toured with “Mamma Mia!” since 2004.

“I think, number one, people love the show because of the reminiscence factor,” Congdon reflects. “Many of them grew up when ABBA was in their heyday.”

A keyboardist and conductor, Congdon credits the quality of the music for ABBA’s longevity.

“Benny [Andersson] was classically trained and I think that allowed him to give the music more of a sophisticated quality,” he said. “He made use of synthesizers—way back in the early 70s when that was a new thing—layered the various sounds and made use of creative background vocals.”

With nearly 3000 performances under his belt, he can finally “shut off” the music when the show concludes and the curtain falls, but he admits he heard the peppy ABBA tunes over and over in his head for years on end.

With touring companies and resident productions around the world, one thing is evident: the music of ABBA is going to be playing for many years to come.

Chicago at the Lake Worth Playhouse: A Musical that Makes You Think

he 59th season of the Playhouse opened July 7 with the Broadway musical hit Chicago.

Set in the Jazz Age Prohibition era of the 1920s, Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart (Emily Thompson)—a young woman who dreams of being a star, but ends up on trial for murder. When her lawyer Billy Flynn (Michael DeGrotta) uses the media to sensationalize the case, Roxie envisions herself as a celebrity.

If you take out the speakeasies, then anyone who watches CNN can discern the connections with the Casey Anthony trial.

In the program for this production of Chicago, Director Clayton Phillips also comments on the show’s social relevance: “You need only to turn on the TV and see Casey Anthony or Amanda Knox to see how we glamorize criminals and make them celebrities. Many of our celebrities who behave as criminals are forgiven, or worse, given a reality show. There are those that say Chicago is a cynical view of our moral ethics, but I believe it is a cautionary tale and we need to be aware of the impact of ‘celebrities’ as role models.”

Although “role models” is not a term that would likely be used in the Casey Anthony case, the media attention and the public’s continued interest has turned the trial into a reality show—a three-ring circus, as Roxie’s lawyer Billy Flynn would say.

Despite the somber subject matter of ethics—Chicago is a musical. As Phillips affirms, the show “makes you think, smile, sing and dance.”

Many audiences know Chicago as the long-running Broadway revival as well as the Oscar-winning film starring Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere.

Whether an audience re-visits Chicago or sees it for the first time at the Lake Worth Playhouse, this production offers exceptional singing, a charismatic ensemble cast, and an impeccable orchestra.

From the sultry “All That Jazz” to the sing-for-her-supper of “Cannot Do It Alone,”

petite curvaceous Velma Kelly (Gina Nespoli) owns the stage with the boldness of her voice. Velma is also on trial for murder, competing with Roxie for media attention and has to make her presence known.

Thompson’s Roxie strikes a willowy figure and coquettish tone as she turns to the audience during her signature performance, “Roxie,” to confess not her crime, but her desire to be famous. Adept at comedic timing, Thompson often blurs lies and truth to humorous effect in “Funny Honey” and “Me and My Baby.”

The main chorus of voices also includes the velvety cadences of DeGrotta’s Flynn; the melancholic pathos of Amos, Roxie’s husband (Christopher Ruble); the vibrant tones of Matron “Mama” Morton who runs the women’s cell block (Nikki Bradley); and the operatic soprano of Mary Sunshine, a journalist who contributes to Roxie’s notoriety (S. Guin).

Another highlight is the vivacious supporting ensemble. Choreographed by Ricky Nahas, “Cell Block Tango,” “All I Care About is Love,” “Roxie,” and “Razzle Dazzle” reveal dancers and singers who interact well with each other as they effortlessly connect with the audience.

Musical Director Evan Ferrar leads a five-piece orchestra as self-assured as the dancing and singing—exuberant, cinematic.

Costumes by Katherine Loretta McBroom showcase black bras, garters, lace, suspenders, tight pants, vests—clothing, evocative of a Depeche Mode video in a decidedly good way.

As Roxie and Velma close the show, they thank the audience for making them into celebrities. They couldn’t do it without us— something to consider before the next trial of the century.

Fork on the Left, Knife in the Back Michael Musto At Heart

F

or twenty-seven New York City years (127 elsewhere years), Michael Musto has delivered a reliably sparkling column called La Dolce Musto, the first thing most readers turn to when they open The Village Voice. Musto is fascinated by and in love with New York City, and NYC loves him back and embraces him completely as its Renaissance gay clown prince who knows all the good dirt. Simply, if Musto is preoccupied with someone or something, we should be too. In a city crawling with pouty Carrie Bradshaws, bless their hearts, Musto’s entrance at any event is a benediction and a raised baton signaling the overture to greater fun.

Most of us see him about town from a respectful distance—not that he is aloof— but I finally sat down with him at the East Village, Cooper Square offices of the paper to see if he was really the kind of man I suspected. On the day of the Casey Anthony verdict, a trial he had covered with relish, we watched the televised scene in the courtroom. When I asked him if he felt justice had been done, he said, “Oh yes. Absolutely. No evidence of murder one.” The

verdict was incidental to his titillation with the story. It is the human drama and people in all their colorful, quirky and tawdry glory that beguile him.

I asked how he became “Michael Musto.” Was it intentional?

“Oh no.You can’t plan a thing like that and that has been the most wonderful aspect of my career. I never made a plan. When I got the column, I was just so happy to have it, and I kept saying to my editors ‘What do you want from me?’ but they just let me be me—I’ve been so spoiled. I was the replacement for Arthur Bell who passed on in 1984. He was a well known gay activist and writer whose column was called ‘Bell Tells.’ I couldn’t just carry the torch for him, so I just invented myself as I went along.”

The closetless Musto is not shy about stating his opinions in the context of dish, and, as an always openly gay gossip writer, he has thrown shade or read celebrity beads when he saw need. He feels that if a columnist has no enemies and offends no one, he is probably doing something wrong. Though all hatchets have been buried, Musto’s past reactors/ detractors included Rosie O’Donnell who

called him a “gay Nazi” and ex-Governor Jim McGreevey who was none too happy with Musto’s inspection of his Rorschachy laundry trucked in from New Jersey.

Musto’s latest book Fork On The Left, Knife In The Back will be released in September. Not simply a “Best Of” collection, it includes a good amount of new mate-

rial. I love the book’s title, and when I asked him about it, he said, “I got it from a butler on Fire Island who used to say ‘Fork on the left, Knife in the back, spoon up the nose and dish, dish, dish!” His new book proves that he is still effortlessly hip. I mentioned that I admired this, praising the fact that he wore what appeared to be a multicolored afghan while interviewing the glamorous transsexual Amanda Lepore. He waved away my question about how he keeps himself stylishly au courant. “Please, I’m from Brooklyn. I’ve never had good taste. I wear what appeals to me, so I can’t make a mistake or go out of style.Very liberating not to have to worry about that.”

As we discussed the Casey Anthony verdict, I wondered what she would do next. Broadway? Musto’s face lit up. “Of course! She could jump into Chicago!

Cypress House Bed & Breakfast Key West’s tranquil oasis

y first visit to Key West was a business trip in which there was little time to savor the many delights of the island. My second trip was quite spontaneous and coincided with Key West Pride, in mid-June. This was a fun time but busy once again. Although this time we were busy running from event to party to parade to experience all the festivities and to meet as many cute men as possible.

However, my last trip to Key West, my third trip, was the charm. This time I wanted rest – pure, uncompromised rest. I was quite able to bask in the peace and solitude for which the Conch Republic is known.

My lodgings, the Cypress House located at the corner of Caroline and Simonton Streets

surely added to the peace of the weekend.

The main building 601 Caroline Street was built in 1888. Like many historic structures of Key West it was built by shipbuilders, which surely contributes to the longevity of the mansion. In addition to the main building Cypress House offers studios two doors down offers charming rooms in two buildings flanking a shaded deck area.

An extended complementary continental breakfast with one hot dish is offered in the large kitchen each morning from 8 to 11 a.m. Guests can enjoy their meal by the pool or in the shade. Each morning after breakfast I lounged poolside and soaked up the sun, which for me was the best way to start my day. The pool – open to guests 24 hours – is a delightful, tranquil spot and

also the location for the 6 p.m. happy hour.

Like an old-fashioned hotel guests are encouraged to mingle and share Key West adventures in the evening.

While the hotel is LGBT-welcoming it is not exclusive to gay men, which is in keeping with Key West’s slogan of “One Human Family.” This also imparts a slower pace to the facility, as many guesthouses catering to gay men seem to host a constant party. At Cypress House it is possible to read a book while soft music plays overhead and you will not be looked on as being anti-social.

If you do wish to experience the gay guesthouse vibe that Key West is known for the New Orleans House and Island House are only about 10 minutes away on foot. They offer weekend pool parties and day passes should you need a break from the serene tranquility of Cypress House. As the hotel offers bikes for rent you can get around like a real resident of Key West – on two wheels.

With all of the activities on and off the island, the many themed weekends and other crowd-drawing events potential visitors often wonder when is the best time to visit.

“It’s always a great time to visit Key West,” manager Stephen Aube, answered that question quickly upon asking.

Residents of South Florida who are used to the heat of the Sunshine State are conditioned to withstand the tropical temperatures of the Conch Republic. Summer, therefore is an ideal time for local residents to visit. However, regardless of season the peace and quiet of Cypress House is as refreshing as the pitcher of lemonade kept out for guests on the outdoor bar.

When leaving Cypress House to explore the city, one question kept crossing my mind. How can such peace and quiet exist only two blocks from Duval Street?
