West Invitation Stirs a Nationwide Hornets’ Nest Wilton Manors LGBT community caught in midst of free speech debate
A decision by the President of the Wilton Manors Business Association, Celeste Ellich, to invite Congressman Allen West to address the non-partisan group ignited a local storm of controversy. At press time, the group had withdrawn the invitation to West. While a new association of LGBT activists, the Coalition for Equality and Fairness, was planning a public rally and demonstration outside City Hall in Wilton Manors on Monday, August 8.
Here’s what happened.
C
eleste Ellich sent an email on July 27 to members of the WMBA notifying them that Congressman West had agreed to address the group at Hagen Community Park on August 8. When the legislative director of the GLBT Democratic caucus, Michael Rajner, found out about West’s upcoming appearance he authored a controversial letter demanding the invitation be rescinded. “Bullies and opportunists like West have actively worked against the advancement of social justice for GLBT-people and others,” the letter read. West has outraged gay rights activists in the past by his divisive statements regarding his opposition to gay marriage and the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Just days before
this latest controversy West said at a town hall meeting: “When you take the military and you tell it they must conform to the individual’s behavior, then it’s just a matter of time until you break down the military.” Rajner indicated that if Ellich refused to cancel the invite, the caucus was going to demand her resignation, insist that LGBT businesses within the association pull out, and orchestrate a boycott against those businesses, which did not resign from the group including “GLBT-owned businesses willing to put profits ahead of human rights.” Rajner’s actions generated an immediate response by business and community leaders. Outraged by discovering that the WMBA would invite West to speak, Antonio Dumas of ‘To the Moon,’ John Castelli of Castelli Homes, and a few other businesses announced they

Allen West Needs to be Censured, Not Censored Norm Kent, Publisher By Norm Kent
D
espite what you may have been reading, the gay community is not out to censor Allen West. We are out to censure him. The maturing gay citizenry in South Florida recognizes we help create the social and economic fabric of our community. We understand our businesses have helped small cities like Wilton Manors grow into a nationally recognized LGBT destination. Our goal is not to be bullies. It is not to be bullied. We will simply be silent no longer when public officials disparage us recklessly, demean us routinely, and denigrate us wantonly. We will not allow public officials, whether in a business association or a congressional seat, to belittle our lives and ignore our aspirations. We will be a part of government, not apart from it. Therefore, we will not allow a legislative leader to go unchallenged when he says gays will lead to the moral decline of the military. Tell that to Leonard Matlovich, the gay soldier whose tombstone reads “They gave me a medal for killing two men, but threw me out of the Armed Forces for loving one.” LGBT businessmen and women have put their heart and soul, as well as their pocketbooks, into developing an environment, which is welcoming and warm for everyone. We have fought hard to find gay allies in leadership positions in government, and have found a dedicated partner in Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. We will simply not stand by silently as another congressman calls her ‘vile’ and ‘despicable.’ This is a congresswoman who has done more to protect and defend the rights of the LGBT community than almost anyone before her. This is the same congressman who fired one of his volunteer interns because he dared to post a tweet responding to an anti gay rant by a public figure. This is the same man who went to the conservative Eagle Forum and told its leadership that gay marriage “is an oxymoron” and warned that if gay marriage becomes legal, “it just becomes a matter of time before we don’t have society.” Congressman West is demonstrating anew each week an irrational fear of the gay and lesbian community, with insulting and irreverent quips that border on bigotry. They certainly are no less than
hate speech itself. None of us can afford to look the other way or turn the other cheek. West said he would be willing to speak in Wilton Manors only if the Wilton Manors Business Association addressed those issues on which he sought to focus on. He insisted that only members of the association be allowed in for the address. The Congressman sought to draw a narrow line that defined the breadth of his talk. As an elected leader, he must embrace diversity, not disengage it. Any talk to businesses in Wilton Manors would of course include the LGBT owners of multiple professions, from the corner pizza restaurant to the large realtors. Our issues are not unlike other businesses, from the costs of health care to equalizing federal tax benefits to domestic partners. A congressman has to respect that the minority who did not support him will challenge him. Once the Wilton Manors Business Association invited him, the congressman authored a letter defining the circumstances under which he would speak and the sole topics he would engage. At that point, the invitation was appropriately withdrawn. Whether the invitation should ever have been issued is a question for a different day. Certainly, the congressman has a right to speak in venues within the district he represents. But he has no right to expect to speak anywhere or go anywhere without being challenged by the controversy his misogynist, hateful remarks generate. We are not the bullies. We are defending ourselves against one. The rally being planned for Monday in Wilton Manors is entitled “Allen West- In His Own Words.” We are going to show he is a verbal abuser, and will simply no longer stand for that abuse. The emerging organization, the Coalition for Equality and Fairness will insure that those who make us second-class citizens today finish in second place in elections tomorrow. We are confident that a prudent and informed citizenry will reject his thinking, and make him a one-term congressman. Check SFGN.com for further information about the Coalition for Equality and Fairness and Monday’s planned event.
A Brief Timeline of the Deepening Divide Between the LGBT Community and Allen West July 19 Gay rights supporter Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz states her opposition to “Cut, Cap and Balance” legislation on the floor of the House of Representatives in response to Congressman Allen West’s support of the legislation. Later in the day West responds in a letter calling her “the most vile, unprofessional ,and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up.” July 23 In Plant City at a town hall meeting West comments on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. He states: “When you take the military and you tell it they must conform to the individual’s behavior, then it’s just a matter of time until you break down the military.” He also rejects any comparison between racial integration and the integration of gays in the military. “Let me explain something to you. I can’t change my color. People can change their behavior, but I can’t change my color.” July 27 Micahel Rajner of the LGBT Democratic Caucus calls for a boycott of the Wilton Manors Business Association after learning the group invited West to speak at their event. West responds: “I am concerned about individuals or organizations that would call upon a boycott and try to hurt hard-working small business owners only because an association wants to be better informed on business related issues that are taking place in Washington D.C.” City Commissioner Julie Carson says West is welcome in Wilton Manors, despite his “anti-gay, misogynist, and disreputable rhetoric [which has] no place in proper civil or political discourse.” July 28 Wilton Manors mayor and City Commissioners speak out against the proposed boycott of the city businesses over the West debacle. Mayor Gary Resnick says in a statement: “Calling for an economic boycott of our business community because you do not happen to agree with … [the] invitation to Congressman West is not only counterproductive, but is irresponsible.” July 29 The Christian Family Coalition jumps in to the controversy and releases a statement supporting West and attacking Rajner: “How ironic that Michael Rajner, a self-proclaimed advocate of tolerance, who claims to support “equal rights” for all, is bullying and threatening the Wilton Manors Business Association (WMBA) with a boycott…To most fair-minded Americans, Michael Rajner’s childish antics only make him look as if he were an intolerant bigot, a closet racist and a hypocrite. August 1 The WMBA backs away from the event and cancels West’s upcoming appearance. That evening a group of community leaders meets and forms a new group, the Coalition for Equality and Fairness, and plans their first event titled “Allen West- In His Own Words.” West later responds to the cancellation and says: “Clearly, we have learned who really are the intolerable individuals in South Florida.”

Queer Speak 21st Century Quotes on Being Gay in America While the Wilton Manors Business Association and its members are free to invite speakers of their choice, and the City of Wilton Manors provides a great venue for those speakers, it is ironic that Allen West will address a group of business owners, many of whom are GLBT, and others whose businesses rely in large part on the currency of the GLBT community. The good residents and business owners of Wilton Manors know that Allen West’s anti-gay, misogynist, and disreputable rhetoric have no place in proper civil or political discourse. His extremist views are not reflective of the soul of American Society, nor are they representative of the heart of the Wilton Manors business owners and residents who struggle to eradicate the very hate speech that the Congressman spews. I will certainly be happy to welcome the Congressman to our great Island City and thank him for his military service to our Country prior to his talk.

Gay Couple Asked to Reverse Shirt at Dollywood By Kristin M. Hall Associated Press
N
ASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) A lesbian couple is asking for changes at Dollywood after an employee asked one of the women to turn her T-shirt reading “marriage is so gay’’ inside-out to avoid offending others on a recent visit to the Tennessee theme park complex. Olivier Odom and Jennifer Tipton said Tuesday they want the park to be more inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families after Odom was asked to reverse her shirt when they visited Dollywood Splash Country next to the Pigeon Forge amusement park. The story was first reported by WBIR-TV in Knoxville. Dollywood spokesman Pete Owens said on Tuesday that Dollywood is open to all
families, but their dress code policy is to ask people with clothing or tattoos that could be considered offensive to change clothes or cover up. Owens said the couple was not asked to leave and complied with the rules to reverse the shirt when asked. “The park is open every day to everybody,’’ Owens said. “We try to provide an environment for families of all shapes and sizes to enjoy themselves.” Owens said park officials were discussing the matter and would speak with the couple directly. Odom said that they visited the water park July 9 with friends and their friends’ two children when she was asked by a person at the front gate to turn her shirt inside out because it was a family park.

Odom said she complied so as not to make a scene in front of the children, but felt offended. “That’s what we found so offensive that he said it was a family park,’’ Tipton said. “Families come in a wide range of definitions these days and we were with our family.’’ The two said they felt they needed to file a complaint with Dollywood because they believed it was important to stand up for their beliefs in marriage equality. “If marriage equality is going to happen, it’s not going to happen if people sit at home quietly,’’ Odom said. Odom said they understand the park can have dress code policies, but she felt Dollywood needed to make their policies clear and provide better training for employees when
Bachmann Refuses to Answer Questions about Gay Conversion Therapy Gage Skidmore
By Philip Elliott Associated Press
W
ASHINGTON (AP) Rep. Michele Bachmann on Thursday again refused to answer questions about her family’s business and finances, saying that she – and not her husband – was the one seeking the White House. The Minnesota Republican faced queries about Marcus Bachmann’s Christian counseling clinic that attempts to convert gay patients as well as her own beliefs on sexuality during a luncheon at the National Press Club. With her husband sitting nearby, Bachmann said she expected scrutiny as a candidate but questions about her family were off-limits. “I’m running for the presidency of the United State. My husband is not running for the presidency. Neither are my children. Neither is our business,” she said. Bachmann, who is campaigning hard ahead of next month’s debate and straw poll in Iowa, has steadfastly refused to discuss

the family’s business that has faced criticism from gay rights groups. When asked to describe her beliefs on gay therapy, Michele Bachmann said she loved her husband of 32
years and then said her husband was not a campaign issue. She also faced questions about her opposition to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Washington Post reported this week that its analysis of her loan documents suggests her family used those federally subsidized programs in 2008. “Unlike all of you, who I’m sure paid cash for your homes, there are people out there like myself who actually have to go to a bank to get a mortgage. This is a problem: it’s almost impossible to buy a home in this country today without the federal government being involved,” she said. “We need to get the federal government out of these programs.” Bachmann used her speech to discuss Congress’ ongoing effort to increase the limit on the nation’s credit card. She downplayed the catastrophic consequences predicted if lawmakers allow the United States to default on its debts. Bachmann, a darling of the libertarian

They wrote an email to the park asking the park “to implement policies that are inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people; conduct staff sensitivity training; and issue a public statement indicating that the park is inclusive of all families.’’ Owens said the couple’s complaints have sparked discussion at the park about the dress code, a policy that park employees deal with frequently because of the thousands of visitors every year.
tea party, has vowed to vote against any increase in the debt ceiling and called the deal being negotiated on Capitol Hill as one based on “illusory” and “counterfeit” savings. She said President Barack Obama has misled the American people on when the government would run out of borrowing authority and has employed “scare tactics” that have needlessly spooked Wall Street. “The current negotiations over the debt ceiling illustrate exactly what is wrong with Washington, D.C., today,” said during her speech. “The lack of a clear plan from our president to substantially reduce our debt is what’s scaring the markets. ... The markets know when politicians are serious about spending cuts and the markets know when politicians are not.’’ The nation faces a Tuesday deadline to increase Washington’s borrowing power to pay its bills. Congressional leaders were working to find a compromise that cuts future spending as a trade-off to avoid a government default that could send world markets crashing and could downgrade the United States’ credit rating. Bachmann said that would not happen; she offered no specifics to back up that claim.

Going Out – New Orleans By Joey Amato

f you don’t have plans this Labor Day weekend, be sure to head to one of the most celebrated events of the summer, Southern Decadence. Now in its 40th year, this fabulous celebration in New Orleans is one of the largest circuit parties in the country. From August 31 through September 5, the Big Easy will be transformed into a non-stop party, headlined once again by the ever-popular Deborah Cox and hosted by Rhea Litre and Billy Francesca. Appearances by world-renowned DJ’s: Abel, Lydia Prim, Dawna Montel, Rodriguez and Mike Bryant will also make for an unforgettable event. The history of Southern Decadence is quite surprising. In 1972, a group of friends living near the French Quarter decided to throw a going away party for another friend. The group decided to theme the party and call it the “Southern Decadence Party: Come As Your Favorite Southern Decadent.” Guests were required to dress in costume as their favorite southern character. The following year, a parade was added, much similar to a bar crawl, and in 1974, a grand marshal was appointed to oversee the soiree. The event grew exponentially in the years following, and today, Southern Deca-
French Quarter in New Orleans
dence attracts more than 110,000 participants and generates nearly $125 million in revenue for the city, making it among the top five events in New Orleans. The crown jewel of Southern Decadence
will be Sunday’s parade, which rivals pride parades in some of the world’s largest cities. This year’s parade features Grand Marshals Tiffany Alexander and Misael Rubio. The duo had the honor of declaring the theme: “What
Happens In New Orleans Stays in New Orleans.” Attendees are encouraged to wear clothing in the shades of fuchsia, black and silver, this year’s chosen color scheme. While in New Orleans, be sure to stop by, the Hit Parade, the city’s largest gay and lesbian gift and clothing store. The unique one-stop shop is located at the corner of Bourbon and St. Ann Streets, directly across the street from the Bourbon Pub / Parade, the largest nightclub in the city. The Crescent city boasts nearly two-dozen LGBT bars and nightclubs, so guests will surely be able to find a venue of their liking. Most bars are situated around the French Quarter, which makes barhopping a breeze and quite safe. The NO/AIDS Task Force will set up an information booth, which will provide visitors with useful information, maps and details about the event and the city itself.

A
ctually, I called this one. Ask my son. Whore, she said, she being me. It was the only defense. Rich guy has sex with hotel maid. What can you say? True love. Not likely. Quote Bernard Shaw. What was her price? OK, so half the people think he’s been put through the wringer, and half think she has. What a wonderful world. Injustice is gender neutral. What I care about is all the other women: the women who really were raped, the women who are afraid to report, the women who will turn away from all of this coverage, who will tense up when men start talking about the poor Frenchman who thought he was doing it with a prostitute and not a woman with a right to consent. I know what these women will do next, or rather, what they won’t. They will not tell anyone what really happened to them. I’m not trying to defend women who lie; they should be put, smack ready, in exactly the category of men who lie, usually about other things, like life or death or money. But most women don’t lie. Matter of fact, they don’t tell the truth in the first place. Year after year, I write these words. Rape
is not the crime most lied about, quite the contrary. If you look at the statistics, rape is the violent crime least likely to be reported. The danger is not that so many women lie (painful though it is to watch), but that so many are afraid to tell the truth. What do you say to them? The real victims. The women who have been casually or cruelly or violently stripped of their self-esteem, their faith in anything, their souls. They come to my office all the time, close the door, lower their voices, and then we cry. Do I tell them this won’t happen to you, unless the guy you’re accusing happens to be a powerful and well-connected IMF guy? That you won’t be put through the wringer, too? Wringers come in many sizes. You don’t have to be in the middle of a tabloid explosion when you’re living in a small world -- small town, big university, it’s all the same. I will never forget what those Boston police officers said to me when I was in the back of the car, a nice girl, raped at the point of an ice pick. Is there anything about you that you wouldn’t want some lawyer digging into? Anything about me. What did I have to do with it? Sometimes I turn it into a joke. How could there possibly be anything for me to hide when I spent the past three years at Wellesley? Everyone laughs. Wellesley is a women’s college. Sometimes I just shake my head. Exactly who is supposed to be on trial here? Over the years, I have learned a very painful lesson. In most rape stories, everyone lies a little. Sex between strangers is rarely very pretty. Truth be told, a rich Frenchman shouldn’t be having sex with a poor and desperate hotel maid. Can we agree on that? Crime or not, it is horrendously bad judgment for someone who is supposed to be managing the world’s money. But you don’t go to prison for bad judg-
ment. If that is all that can be proved, you don’t go to trial. Over and done. The Frenchman may not get his reputation back (and he will never be alone in this lament), but it remains to be seen just what reputation he deserves. In the meantime, there is the matter of the other women. And men. Men underreport rape even more than women do. Stigma is gender neutral, as well. Indeed, if there is anything worse in the rape world than being a female victim, it is being a male victim. So the message goes out yet again: Watch
out. Men, watch out for those women you think you can treat like toilet paper; they may come back to catch you. Watch out when you have sex with someone you don’t know, don’t trust, wouldn’t, say, lend your wallet to. Watch out, indeed. You should be doing that anyway. And what is the message to women? Obama Faces Disappointment from the Left By Matt Chen
P
resident Obama’s decision to begin to withdraw from Afghanistan reflects a deepening rift between his administration and his former sycophants on the left. On a score of issues, the liberal community has begun to tire of their president. Indeed, at the Netroots Conference, liberal activists convened a panel on “What To Do If The President Is Just Not That Into You.” And liberals are getting the feeling that he is not. From Al Gore comes the criticism that Obama has not informed the nation about the scientific evidence which he sees as proving that man-induced climate change is upon us and for not taking bold enough steps to address the issue. Of course Al Gore never addresses the fact that if the government actually restricts business activity to comply with climate change concerns, it will effectively reduce or eliminate so many
industries that millions of people will lose their jobs. And China will laugh at us... From Democratic Senators comes the warning not to cut too deeply into government spending in the debt limit negotiations and a demand that he listen to their appeals for even more spending. It’s hard to ever find a liberal or so-called progressive who wants to restrict government spending and foreign borrowing, except when it pertains to the Pentagon. From the gay community comes anger at Obama’s refusal to endorse gay marriage despite his ongoing, self-confessed “evolution” on the subject. Part of the problem is that Mr. Obama needs a huge turn out of Hispanics and blacks to get re-elected, yet both groups are far more opposed to “gay mariage” than white voters. Unemployment in the Latino and black communities, coupled with gay marriage,” will likely depress

the minority voter turnout Obama needs for a second term. From ultra-liberal Congressman Dennis Kucinich comes the charge that his intervention in Libya is outside the permitted scope of the war powers act. From former Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt comes an attack on Obama’s land use policies, accusing him of too easily allowing access and development on public land. Although, such access and development does create jobs and more taxpayers. From the far left comes consternation at Obama’s refusal to close Gitmo and even criticism over shooting an “unarmed” Osama bin Laden. And from the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO) comes anger at Obama’s refusal to attend their annual convention for the third year in a row despite his campaign vow to come back after he won the election. Beneath their pique is, of course, real discontent over his failure to push for immigration reform even when he had sixty votes in the Senate and his stepped up “silent raids” on employers of illegal immigrants – something the gay community refuses to admit because they want to portray Obama as the champion of diversity. Obama needs the strong and enthusiastic support of a solidly united left. He needs the turnout and he requires that they remain loyal even as he moves to the center to appease conservative and moderate voters. But he is not getting it. Nor is his decision to withdraw so slowly from Afghanistan likely to do much to endear him to the liberals. While he makes a big show of withdrawing more rapidly than
his generals wanted, that’s a straw man. In reality, he is going to keep the surge troops in Afghanistan until Election Day as he pulls them out slowly between now and then. His announcement of a pullout of ten thousand troops – out of a hundred thousand – by the end of the summer will not impress the left. Behind the discontent of the liberals is, of course, disappointment and frustration with the economy. The continuing high levels of Liberals realize that under Obama there has not only been no closure of the gap between the rich and the poor but the recession has brought a further widening.
unemployment and the president’s seeming cluelessness in the face of a coming double dip recession – accompanied by inflation this time – erode his image as an income redistributor. Liberals realize that under Obama there has not only been no closure of the gap between the rich and the poor but the recession has brought a further widening. Obama’s victory was clinched by a virtual doubling in the turnout of young people in 2008. Unless he comes near that level this time, he is in for great difficulty. And the soundings from the Latino and left communities indicate that he’s got a long, long way to go. Matt Tsien (Chen) is a graduate of the National Journalism Center of Washington, DC.

Is Pedophilia a ‘Sexual Orientation?’ By David Webb
T
he very mention of the word pedophilia – defined as the abnormal sexual desire in an adult for children – can spark an emotional, angry response in many people. I discovered that when I posted a question on Facebook seeking comments on what an anonymous reader had previously suggested to me about pedophilia. The reader advised me that pedophiles comprise a minority group, and that pedophilia is actually a form of sexual orientation like being gay or lesbian. The reader reached out to me because I had described the LGBT community as the last minority group to which it is still politically correct to discriminate against in some quarters. The reader claimed that pedophiles are similarly discriminated against in a much harsher light and suggested that LGBT activists also engage in the discrimination because they are higher in the pecking order than pedophiles. In response to a comment I made about his initial complaint, the reader wrote, “You are confusing sexual orientation with criminal activities. There is abundant evidence that most child molesters are not pedophiles (not primarily attracted to prepubescent children), and that most pedophiles are not molesters. I would hope that the people in your community would be able to understand the difference.” Well, I not only did not understand the difference I was bewildered, to put it mildly. I asked the reader to send me an e-mail further explaining his argument, but I never received a response. So my next step was typical for me when I don’t quite know what to say, I started doing a little research on the Internet. What I found first was an essay, “The Pattern of Sexual Politics: Feminism, Homosexuality and Pedophilia,” by Prof. Harri Mirkin, published in 1999 in an academic journal. The essay made headlines in 2002, while Mirkin was chairman of the political science department at the University of Missouri’s Kansas City campus, according to a New York Times story.
The essay gained widespread attention because of the sexual abuse scandal that enveloped the Roman Catholic Church. In the essay, Mirkin compared the “moral panic” over pedophilia to the outrage that erupted
when the feminist and gay rights movements took hold. Reaction to Mirkin’s essay, even though it was a few years old, apparently was equally hostile and panic-stricken. From there I moved on to an essay written for the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy, written in 1989, by Joan A. Nelson, who is listed today as an American Board of Sexology certified sex therapist practicing in San Rafael, Calif. The essay, “Intergenerational Sexual Contact,” gave me a more scientific name for what I was researching and defined it as “any behavior between a minor and someone at least five years older that is perceived by either participant or by society as sexually stimulating or intended to be sexually stimulating.” It examined both the “adult participants” and the “child participants” in great detail. In one passage it noted, “In the face of ageold taboos and horrors of child abuse, it is hard for educators, research designers and other shapers of social policy to be nonjudgmental about intergenerational sex.” It goes on to say that scientists should basically approach this type of sexual activity clinically to avoid misleading results. One of the more surprising points made in the essay was that the child participants appeared to sometimes be “indifferent” to the experience rather than traumatized. Advocates of legalizing sexual relationships between adults and pubescent minors apparently argue that it is usually consensual, it has occurred throughout history and that it
causes no harm to the younger partners. I searched to see if there were any groups actively promoting the interests of people who think they should have the right to engage in such sexual activity, but all I found was the North American Man/Boy Love Association. To the best of my knowledge that group and its interests have been condemned by most LGBT activists, law enforcement agencies and mental health professionals, and its small membership has disappeared underground. I became aware of some advocacy for lowering the age-of-consent laws for sexual activity, but I don’t think those are particularly relevant to the issue of so-called intergenerational sex. Most of what I’ve read concerning that issue appears to be related to teenagers who become involved in consensual sexual relationships with others closer to their age. Finally, armed with this new body of knowledge, I went to Facebook to undertake my unofficial survey. I asked for input from my friends, and boy howdy, did I get it. My Facebook friends represent a pretty good cross-section of straight and gay people, conservatives and liberals and
people all ages and backgrounds, many of whom are part of our community in some way. Most appeared to be outraged by the very idea of even considering whether there should be any consideration given to the idea of pedophilia as a sexual orientation. One commentator noted that LGBT activists should have had the foresight long ago to “rail against” any classification of our community in terms of sexual orientation, sexual preference or any other sexual terms. In our community, we are building relationships, raising families and doing all of the other things in which our heterosexual counterparts engage. She asked why we should always be classified in sexual terms, rather than for who we are and what we accomplish? So I would say in conclusion, that I learned a lesson. And to the anonymous reader who thought that our community should be better able to understand pedophilia (or intergenerational sex) and be more sympathetic, I’d have to say, “Sorry, but we don’t buy it.” David Webb is a veteran journalist who has covered LGBT issues for the mainstream and alternative press for three decades. Del Shores’ Sordid Confessions A new show comes to The Manor
By Dennis Jozefowicz
D
el Shores, creator of the cult-favorite film, play and TV series Sordid Lives, is bringing his hilarious new one-man show to South Florida. The Southern-fried writer/director/producer and most recently added stand-up comedian just played to rave reviews at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in NYC, Rose Room in Dallas and more than a dozen other cities. During his last visit to Fort Lauderdale in 2009, he brought A Sordid Affair to the Parker Playhouse. The show highlighted characters in the TV series, as well as musical performances by his husband Jason Dottley (was also was in the series), comedy skits from cast members, and a standup routine from Leslie Jordan. This time around, Del is on his own with a brand of raw stand-up that highlights his outrageous stories that rival Sordid Lives. Jason Dottley will also be on hand to perform his new hit “Pop it.” This will definitely be a “not miss” show chock full of hard-core laughs not for the faint-of-heart.

I know, according to you, the girls run the world – but what do you think about the girls and the gays teaming up and running the world together? Well, that’s what I meant when I said girls. (Laughs) Sure – we could all be one. Yes, exactly! We are all one. Do you know enough gay people so that we could successfully pull this off and take over the world? Absolutely. I think it’s happening already. I remember my friends were telling me when the song “Run the World (Girls)” first came out in the clubs the kids were going crazy, and I thought it was so wonderful and I was so excited to know that the reception was so positive. You don’t do a lot of gay press, but you have to know that you have a huge gay following. Yes, I do. When did you feel a real connection with your gay fans? I’ve always had a connection. Most of my audience is actually women and my gay fans, and I’ve seen a lot of the younger boys kind of grow up to my music. It’s great when I’m able to do the meet-and-greets, because I’m able to really connect and have conversations. People look at some of the artists that I admire – like Diana Ross and Cher – and they identity that glamour with Sasha Fierce, and I’ve been really inspired by the language. I have my (gay) stylists and my makeup artist, and all of their stories and the slang words I always put it in my music. We inspire each other. Like I said, we’re one.

What do gay people tell you when you meet them? I have so many stories; I don’t even know where to begin. I know that I just recently had a contest where I had everyone reenact my artwork. Just seeing some of the guys who dressed up – like my hairstylist dressed up as Sasha Fierce from “Single Ladies” for Halloween, and I saw so many people dressed up in that glove and bodysuit – really makes me feel like I’m doing my job and some of the fashion is making its mark. To know that people can be free and confident and do what they want themselves, and I can be the person they want

‘Torchwood’ Actor Defies Stereotypes By J.W. Arnold

or many children growing up not that long ago, the fantastic worlds of science fiction and comic books served as an escape from the strict definitions of gender and sexual identity. Geeks and gays alike could daydream of a world that glorified intellect and self-expression, a place where a boy could be swept off to adventure by a handsome, dashing hero in a fast spaceship. For a new generation of young people, Captain Jack Harkness is that hero. Introduced on the BBC’s long-running series, Doctor Who, Harkness, played by actor and singer John Barrowman, is the dashing American scoundrel who cannot die. Deemed “omnisexual,” he romantically pursued men and women equally. Audiences weren’t fazed and soon Harkness was the lead character in a new spin-off, Torchwood, about a secret team of heroes who deal with a rift in the time/ space continuum near Cardiff, Wales. Many actors might avoid such a role for fear of typecasting, but Scottish-born Barrowman embraced the complexities of Jack Harness, because he himself is openly gay. Barrowman, 44, recalled the first samesex scene he played as Captain Jack: “To be honest with you, it flew by like it never happened. As the character developed and progressed—we called him ‘omnisexual’ in the ‘Doctor Who’ world—no one made a really big issue of it.” Instead, fans embraced the character and the actor. “The fans know who he is and it’s about

Barrowman predicts Jack will captivate new viewers and warns there will be plenty of “man on man hot sex,” too. “There are a lot of different characters represented on American TV, more than any other nation, I think, but they’re pretty much stereotypes. People connect with [Jack and the Torchwood characters] because of the truth of who they are, the truth of their relationships, the way they go about living their lives. It will be refreshing for audiences,” says Barrowman, who joined his longtime partner in a British civil ceremony in 2006. Barrowman, who immigrated with his family to Illinois as a child and completed college in Southern California, is a household name in the United Kingdom. He has served as a judge on the British series So You Think You Can Dance, and numerous performance competition shows; has feature films and West End musicals under his belt; and is releasing a new album, Best of Barrowman, and going on a concert tour. “I didn’t come into this business to be famous, but it happened,” he says. As a judge of many reality talent competitions he advises hopefuls, “If you want to be famous overnight, you can try your luck and go on a reality show….but do you really want to be an entertainer? There is a difference. I was born and put on this planet to be an entertainer, but celebrity comes as a gift to the hard work that you do.” But, for American audiences, he will always be Captain Jack and he’s committed to Torchwood for now. “It’s my baby,” he concludes.
time to have an openly gay man play a hero on television,” he explains. “I’m proud. I’m glad to be a voice for the gay and lesbian and transgender community.” Reruns of both Doctor Who and Torchwood have long been staples on BBC America, but producers introduced Torchwood: Miracle Day, a new series aimed more at the American au- “Torchwood: Miracle Day” STARZ. Music

Singer Embraces Sexual Orientation and Christian Faith ne of the biggest struggles many gays, lesbians and bisexuals face is the reconciliation of their sexuality with their Christian faith. Can someone be gay and a Christian? Can a Christian be gay? Depending on who you ask, and what translation of the Bible you read, you might get a wide variety of answers. No one knows the answer better than Shawn Thomas, a Boynton Beach gay man who grew up the son of a minister in conservative Indiana. Thomas wrestled with these questions and has turned to contemporary Christian music to share the message of love and inclusion that can be found in the church. “One of the things I’m most grateful for is that my father is a graceful pastor,” Thomas explains. “I never heard condemnation from the pulpit, just God’s love and grace.” As a teen in a small town, he didn’t really understand what being “gay” or “homosexual” really meant, he just knew he was attracted to men and that he didn’t fit the common stereotypes of the time of gay men as child molesters and social deviants. “At the time, I wasn’t praying to God to change me or save me from going to Hell, but just for someone to be sent to me and explain [my feelings] to me,” he recalls. Music was a natural outlet for the outgoing Thomas. His mother was a musician and he grew up singing, later starring in school productions. He completed a recording sciences and music industry degree at Middle Tennessee State University and immersed himself in secular projects. He chuckles, “I was doing pop and rock music and didn’t really know what contemporary Christian music was. I thought it was just hymns and didn’t want to do it.” Fortunately, Thomas did discover contemporary Christian music and was sharing his
music with audiences around the country. Eight years ago, he was called to lead the music ministry at Metropolitan Community Church of the Palm Beaches part time, allowing him to continue traveling and performing. On Friday, Aug. 5, he returns to MCC of the Palm Beaches in a special homecoming concert to celebrate the release of his latest CD, “Covered and Created.” The two-disc set includes a disc of covers of both secular and sacred artists, including Cher, Faith Hill and Richard Marx, and a disc of original Christian songs he wrote. “I had always wanted to do a cover CD, but I wrote so many of my own songs, I never had a chance,” he explains. “I’m especially happy to be able to share songs by other artists that have some meaning to me. The songs all have spiritual themes and speak to me.” Surprisingly, now that Thomas has reconciled his faith and found an active music ministry, he often faces the most hostility from other gays and lesbians. “One of the obstacles I’ve come up against was criticism not from the straight community, but from the gay community. The would tell me you can’t be gay and say God loves you. It’s not true that there’s a place for faith in the gay community. I struggled with that as I tried to find my niche,” he says. “Being an openly gay Christian is kind of like coming out of the ‘second closet.’” He adds, “Being gay is only a part of who God made me to be. My purpose is to glorify God and share the gospel of Christ. The rest is incidental to the cause….”

The Daily Hook-Up Partners with SFGN Curators for gay closets & lifestyles

ecently SFGN partnered with The Daily Hook-Up, a website which sources brands and social opportunities of interest to gay men of style and taste. Social buying sites and networks, like Groupon and Living Social, have grown in popularity for several reasons. The chief reason being those who care for finer things and experiences would much rather reduce quantity or find excellent deals – not settle for bland. “The Daily Hookup is an innovative social-buying network designed for the most discerning of consumers—you. Our mission is to connect our distinctive membership with premium brands, exceptional opportunities and social experiences that matter,” from the website’s About Us statement. The site was launched only in June, yet they have seen an overwhelming response from the public. “We have 14 curators in NYC, LA, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.,” said CEO and co-founder John Stubbs. Instead of “buyers” The Daily Hookup employs a team of curators across the country to source unique shopping and opportunities for discerning gay men. Curators might seem a curious word choice for the arbiters of taste whose job it is to find and offer exciting fashion or experiences. However building
a fine, lasting wardrobe and an exciting life is like developing a great collection of art. “The curators source interesting brands from everywhere in the United States and make them available to everyone,” said Stubbs. “That’s why we offer any time, anywhere products which can be found online.” Many merchants on The Daily Hookup often do not have a physical shop. Bonobos, known for their well-tailored pants and other menswear, is one such merchant.
“Shirtmakers Hugh and Crye, like Bonobos, do not have stores. We had great success with Hugh and Crye,” Stubbs said of the DC-based business. “We sold more products for them in 48 hours than they sold in 10 days – in 15 markets.” In addition to great deals – such as a recent $60 offer for $120 worth of Bonobos goods – they offer something of a philanthropic nature. Many online clubs, or social shopping groups, may offer occasional dona-
tions based on a percentage of purchases but The Daily Hookup has gone one step further. “We gift five percent of every deal and purchase to a recognized charity,” Stubbs confirmed, “such as grass-roots non-profits like the Ali Forney Center for LGBTQ youth in New York City.” Another recipient charity, Food and Friends, provide meals for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS in D.C. “We’re excited about our new partnership with The Daily Hookup,” said SFGN publisher, Norm Kent. “Online social shopping networks are hot right now. Rather than develop our own take on such an enterprise we are proud to work with an established company. It’s noteworthy some funds go to The Tiny Tim project. Although I might be biased as a dog lover,” he added about designer John Barlett’s charity for at-risk canines supported through The Daily Hookup. With unique style from world-class cities, coupled with donations to LGBT-supportive charities and very diverse employees, which Stubbs described as being “split down the middle in terms of gay and straight” The Daily Hookup is an ideal destination for the discerning gay shopper. Access The Daily Hookup via SFGN.com to get hooked-up as often as possible.

nterested in LGBT arts and literature? The Stonewall National Museum and Archives in Fort Lauderdale offers readings, art exhibitions, a library with over 20,000 books and 1,000 DVDs, an archive with over 5,000 items documenting LGBT history, and the annual Gay and Lesbian Literary Arts (GALLA) Festival. Note of disclosure: I am a lesbian literary geek for Stonewall. Since moving back to South Florida in 2003, I’ve been involved at Stonewall in different ways. I’ve read my writing at Lavender Speaks -- a monthly cultural event for women that has now relocated to The Pride Center, -- taught a creative writing workshop, attended readings by authors from Bella Books and recently started volunteering at the front desk.
My work with the museum is a way to connect to the LGBT community—realtime connection, not just a Facebook post. Social media and the internet have re-defined how we relate to each other—sometimes to our disadvantage. For instance LGBT bookstores were centers for activism, intellect, and creativity. As these bookstores close down due to the economy and competition with online retailers, we have to find other ways to build community. This is why we need Stonewall. On Sunday, August 7, Stonewall National Museum and Archives presents an event that speaks to this call for community. Unfortunately, it’s not in South Florida. The Land’s End Inn of Provincetown, Massachusetts is where Stonewall will showcase a Women’s Music Event and Ice Cream Social from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The

r. Gary Morey passed away Monday afternoon, as SFGN prepared this week’s issue for publication. Stated Christina Bontempo, the Broward HIV Planning Council Manager, “For the past 16 years, Dr. Gary Morey volunteered his time and expertise with the Fort Lauderdale/Broward County HIV Health Services Planning Council. His experience, knowledge and commitment toward the cause will be missed by all who knew him.” His words of wisdom can perhaps be summarized best in his own words from a letter sent to the Council last week: “From provider to Council and various committee members and consultants, I’ve been able to gladly and proudly donate time where I thought it would be of most benefit to others. I wish to THANK all the dedicated people who have served before me, alongside me and will afterward into the future, struggle in this noble cause. I wish all that remain to continue this vital battle to provide the best quality of services that the PLWH/A’s of Broward County deserve! Gary.”

Jesse’s Journal
Shiver Me Timbers! Gay Pirates then and Now Youtube
By Jesse Monteagudo
Cosmo Jarvis (right) in “Gay Pirates” video.
T
his essay is dedicated to Cosmo Jarvis, a 21-year old English singer-songwriter who is widely acclaimed in the UK but who is unfairly unknown this side of the pond. Earlier this year Jarvis released a single, “Gay Pirates,” which tells of the star-crossed love between a jolly buccaneer and a young shipmate. As good as the song is, it’s actually surpassed by the music video, a Youtube viral hit which Jarvis himself directed and starred in. “Gay Pirates” was praised by gay celebrity tweeters Stephen Fry and John Barrowman and featured as Record of the Day and AOL’s Spinner video of the day. Not bad for a song by a still-unknown, straight – but not narrow – young artist. Captain Jack Sparrow, the anti-hero of Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, is cinema’s most ambiguously gay pirate. As played by Johnny Depp, Sparrow is a far cry from the swashbucklers portrayed by Errol Flynn or Tyrone Power. Disney executives, critics and ordinary viewers alike did not know what to make of Depp’s jolly buccaneer, one whom Depp had based in part
on rocker Keith Richards. Desiree Cooper, of the Detroit “Free Press,” wrote what was in many minds when she called Sparrow “one of the most brilliantly entertaining gay characters of our time.” Though Depp refused to go so far, he did admit to Mark Binelli of “Rolling Stone” magazine that he deliberately made Jack sexually ambiguous. “Because women were thought to be bad luck on ships. And these pirates would go out for years at a time. So, you know, there is a possibility that one thing might lead to another. You’re lonely. You have an extra ration of rum. ‘Cabin boy!’” Depp told Binelli that he was inspired by “Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition,” B. R. Burg’s controversial study of English sea rovers in the 17th century Caribbean Sea. Professor Burg studied 17th century English life as well as same-sex societies throughout history to conclude that pirate society was “one of the most unusual homosexually oriented groups in history. . . . The presence of sodomites among those who make their livings from the sea is not a startling revelation.
. . .Yet pirate homosexual practice is distinct from that common either to sailors or to men in other ages and in other societies where masculine sexual bonding has flourished. . . . Among pirates, either aboard their ships or while living on isolated West Indian islands, homosexual acts were not integrated with or subordinated to alternate styles of sexual conduct. They were the only form of sexual expression engaged in by members of the buccaneer community.” Needless to say, not everyone agreed with Prof. Burg’s conclusions. Historian Hans Turley, author of Rum, Sodomy & the Lash, dismissed them out of hand, arguing that “the evidence for piratical sodomy is so sparse as to be almost nonexistent.” And pirate vessels were not 17th century versions of today’s RSVP or Atlantis cruise ships, no matter how much we might want them to be. On the other hand, Nigel Cawthorne wrote in his History of Pirates that “many early pirates were homosexuals who had little time for women. After years in single-sex buccaneer colonies ashore or at sea in ships, they turned to shipmates, sadism or the abuse of cabin boys for sexual gratification.” All things considered, we may agree with Stephen Wayne Foster and Stephen Donaldson, who wrote in the Encyclopedia of Homosexuality that “while it is easy to criticize the dearth of documentary material offered by Burg, his conclusions cannot be readily dismissed.” Lacking an alternative, many pirates formed long-lasting partnerships with other pirates, in a system known as “matelotage.” According to Cawthorne, “two ‘matelots’ would keep their property in common which the survivor inherited. When women joined the buccaneers on Tortuga Island off the northern coast of Hispaniola, matelotage continued but, if one man married, the woman was shared by the two partners.” According to Prof. Burg, “as practiced by buccaneers on Hispaniola early in the seventeenth century, matelotage was probably no more than a master-servant relationship originating in cases of men selling themselves to other men to satisfy debts or to obtain food. . . . However, the generally recognized bond it created between men and the understanding that an inviolable attachment existed between the two as long as the master wanted it to remain so gave matelotage a sacrosanct aura among buccaneers.” Pirate matelotage was common enough to be mentioned in pirate memoirs of the day, such as Louis Le Golif’s Memoirs of a Buccaneer and Alexander Exquemelin’s The Buccaneers of America. The
General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates, written by Daniel Defoe under the pen name of “Captain Charles Johnson,” tells the tale of Mary Read and Anne Bonny, two female pirates who were also “matelots.” One of the most popular gathering of “pirates” – gay or otherwise – is the Gasparilla Pirate Fest, held each January in Tampa, Florida. The most recent Gasparilla Fest evoked an alarming piece from self-appointed moral guardian Eugene Delgaudio, warning that “radical homosexual pirates” were invading Tampa. Writing for the aptly titled “Inquisition News,” Delgaudio screamed that “Radical Homosexuals have infiltrated as event organizers to promote homosexual events that are designed to prey upon unsuspecting college students by enticing them to join their ‘krewes’ and help build parade floats in exchange for free alcohol. When the young men are sufficiently intoxicated, homosexuals dressed as pirates whisk them away to God knows where to take advantage of them sexually.” Mary! If nothing else, Delgaudio’s rant should make Tampa’s Gasparilla Pirate Fest a popular destination with gay pirates and pirate lovers everywhere. I can hardly wait.

Velvet Rope Soaps are handmade soaps loaded with natural ingredients & beneficial oils such as coconut, grape seed & olive. The creamy addition of goats’ milk makes for a rich, creamy lather, which will keep your skin as moist & soft as it will clean & glowing. Velvet Rope Soaps come in a variety of styles – many cleverly named after bars! Bear Bar has a masculine scent with overtones of musk and clove. Disco Bar has a unisex scent, recalling the gender bending moments of Studio 54. Foot Fetish Bar has coarse Mediterranean sea salt so you can scrub those feet right. Leather Bar – of course – recalls the scent of leather & might become your soap of choice before donning a harness, if you’re into it! Lightly scented soaps are a great alternative to cologne or other scents, especially in South Florida where we are prone to sweat! VelvetRopeSoaps.com offers large bath bars, smaller hotel bars – perfect for travel, gifts, or to keep your powder room soap dish fresh. They also offer a soak variety perfect for the bath.
Gulliver Travels, a novel, by Justin Luke Zirilli. It’s not a myth. Those raised in L.A. frequently head to N.Y.C. for college – and vice versa. Often they find a healthy dose of what they might have been fleeing on their initial coast – be it East or West – namely vices. In Zirilli’s novel we find a young man named Gulliver who gives up California & a “bastard of an ex-boyfriend” in exchange for the bright lights of New York! He lands in Hell’s Kitchen, one of the trendiest centers for gay life on the isle of Manhattan. He doesn’t have much money, but he does have a great time “just barely scraping by in the city that never sleeps.” There is something very reminiscent of 1984’s “Bright Lights, Big City” by Jay McInerney as Gully traipses all over New York in Zirilli’s first novel. Available on Amazon.com for a dose of NYC madness.
Imbibing Red Bicyclette Rosé is an affordable, luscious rosé from the LanguedocRoussillon region of Southern France. The company takes its wine seriously, & carefully blends the laid-back lifestyle of Southern France with an American palate, owned by Gallo wines. Many people – when they see rosé – fear it will be sugary sweet like the infamous White Zinfandels popular in the 1980s. However, this is not the case. A good rosé will recall so-called “red fruits,” which in Europe is understood to mean strawberries, raspberries & other such berries. This blend of Grenach & Syrah grapes is best served very chilled & withstands a few ice cubes if the sun is relentless. It’s delectable on its own or with a light meal. Best of all Red Bicyclette wines are fairly easy to find in your local supermarkets & liquor stores. See RedBicyclette.com for local merchants.
Noshing Salade Niçoise is a light, healthy, inexpensive, easy-to-whip-up meal serving 6 guests. Take 1 head washed Boston lettuce leaves – 1 pound fresh steamed green beans – 2 tbs minced shallots – 1 dozen cherry tomatoes cut in half – 6 ounces of oil-packed tuna – 6 small boiled, red potatoes, cut into quarters – 6 hard boiled eggs, also cut into quarters – 1/3 cups of your favorite, pitted olives – 3 tbs capers – 4 tbs minced fresh flat leaf parsley. Place lettuce leaves on large platter. Toss green beans, tomatoes, tuna, and tomatoes with 2/3 cup of a simple, homemade vinaigrette. There are many versions of this dressing found online. Using your flair for style arrange the egg, potatoes, capers & olives creatively on the top of the lettuce leaves. Sprinkle parsley all over the platter. If you know some guests will enjoy them add a few anchovy fillets also a traditional part of this salad’s presentation & of course a baguette. This salad – a summer favorite on the Mediterranean – goes well with a chilled white or the Red Bicyclette Rosé mentioned above.
