O

penly gay endurance swimmer Diana Nyad, 61, was hoping to arrive in Key West sometime Wednesday after a grueling 60-hour swim from Cuba, completing a journey she started 33 years ago when she first attempted the feat at the age of 28. Instead she arrived Tuesday by boat, only making it about halfway. Ocean swells, shoulder pain and asthma forced her to abandon her goal. CNN reported Nyad was vomiting when she boarded the boat, but still in good spirits. “I am not sad. It was absolutely the right call,” she told CNN afterwards. Later she posted on Twitter, “It felt like this was my moment. I don’t feel like a failure at all. But we needed a little more luck.” And in another tweet she said, “It’s

hard because I felt like I had it in me.” Nyad first attempted the swim from Cuba to Florida in 1978, but weather foiled her attempt after 42 hours. A year later in 1979 she completed a record 102.5-mile swim from Bimini in the Bahamas to Juno Beach. That record was named by OutSports.com the 59th most important moment in LGBT sports history. If Nyad had completed the 103-mile swim she wouldn’t have been first to do so. That record belongs to Australian marathon swimmer Susan Maroney in 1997. However unlike Maroney, Nyad did not use a shark cage. Instead her crew had special equipment that surrounded her with an electric current to keep sharks away. In addition divers were on hand to discourage any sharks that still came too close.

“Earlier in the evening, she was surrounded by dolphins and a beautiful Caribbean sunset. But strong currents blew her 15mph off course,” her team posted on her Twitter account. About 18 hours in to the swim CNN reported she was experiencing shortness of breath and needed an inhaler. Her shoulder was also bothering her, and she needed to ice it and take antiinflammatory medicine. By hour 28 CNN reported Nyad was in intense pain and had to rest every three to four freestyle strokes, and roll onto her back to breathe. And then sometime during hour 29 she came to the conclusion that it was over. Nyad had a team of more than 30 people to support her, including 10 handlers to advise her, ocean kayakers that towed the devices to repel sharks, and divers to distract sharks that were not turned away. Before the swim she said: “I’m standing here at the prime of my life. I think this is the prime. When one reaches this age, you still have a body that’s strong, but now you have a better mind. A mind at peace with the joy of the world, a mind full of courage that’s not afraid. So I think this is my day. I don’t know you have to talk to me in 24 hours, and then 48 hours and then 60 hours and see how I feel.” Unfortunately for Nyad she never made it to the 48 or 60-hour mark.

Local Group Helps Bullied Children Can’t Tell Foundation combines a variety of therapies to help victims

“I

watched in horror as a bullied classmate leapt to his death in my freshman year in college,” said Shari B. Kaplan, LCSW, founder of The Can’t Tell Foundation and creator of the CTF Treatment Program. “I knew that could have been me. I had been bullied in school because of a disfigurement from an early childhood facial injury. But my visible scars had been removed and I was fortunate to have a therapist who helped make bearable my psychological wounds. My classmate wasn’t so lucky.” Suicide is the second leading cause of death in teens and young adults. Each year, 3.7 million school children in America report being bullied while 3.2 million are reported as bullies. In the US alone, more than 40 million adults are survivors of childhood sexual assault. That’s why Kaplan created the CTF Treatment Program -to help these victims become survivors and ultimately to thrive and achieve their goals. That’s also why Kaplan has a focus on LGBT youth who are often the targets of bullies and who have higher rates of addictions, self-inflicted injuries, and suicide. “I know how painful life can be when you wake up in the morning and know you’re going to be bullied just because you showed up for your day,” said Kaplan, wincing at the thought. Research shows abuse, bullying and sexual assault may harm one’s self-esteem and lead to depression and suicide. It also may cause serious neuro-biological damage to the brain. These wounds compound the psychological, social and emotional problems of trauma and increase the difficulty in treating their effects. “That’s why my treatment program includes so much more than just traditional therapy and/or pharmacological interventions,” said Kaplan. “We have to include a physiological dimension in healing the neuro-biological damage of trauma.” The healing practices she uses combine a variety of tools not normally associated with traditional Western psychotherapy such as

One of Kaplan’s major projects is her “My Dream Campaign” to help clients who cannot afford the program. Having needed the services of many different practitioners to treat her own children’s sexual assault by the son of a trusted employee, Kaplan discovered how expensive these services can be, with or without, health insurance. “I know this approach works,” Kaplan said. “And it does cost money. New Findings Show HIV Infections in Young MSM Rising By Jason Parsley

T

he Center for Disease Control and Prevention released their first multi-year estimate of the annual number of new HIV infections in the U.S. on Wednesday. The results found that overall new infections have remained relatively stable at 50,000 a year from 2006 to 2009. But new infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) have increased. “We are deeply concerned by the alarming rise in new HIV infections in young, black gay and bisexual men and the continued impact of HIV among young gay and bisexual men of all races,” said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., director of CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. “We cannot allow the health of a new generation of gay men to be lost to a preventable disease. It’s time to renew the focus on HIV among gay men and confront the homophobia and stigma that all too often accompany this disease.” The findings also show a 34 percent increase in new infections among young MSM from 2006 to 2009. Even more alarmingly though, young, black MSM, aged 13 to 29, experienced a 48 percent increase. That group is the only subpopulation that experienced a significant increase. The new findings also confirm that HIV continues to disproportionately affect MSM of all races and ethnicities. The CDC estimates MSM represent 2 percent of the total

U.S. population, but they accounted for 61 percent of all new HIV infections in 2009. In 2009 white MSM represented the greatest number of new HIV infections at 11,400 followed by black MSM at 10,800 and Hispanic MSM at 6,000. “While we’re encouraged that prevention efforts have helped avoid overall increases in HIV infections in the United States, and have significantly reduced new infections from the peak in the mid-1980s, we have plateaued at an unacceptably high level,” said Kevin Fenton, M.D., director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention. “Without intensified HIV prevention efforts, we are likely to face an era of rising infection rates and higher health care costs for a preventable condition that already affects more than one million people in this country.”

POSTCARDS FROM KEY WEST

Travels and Tempting Events Enliven Southernmost Summer By Steve Smith

S

ummers don’t slow down very much here in Key West, so many of us take off for rest and recreation. This month I spent a couple weeks in the United Kingdom, visiting places my husband Paul frequented before moving to the U.S. We started in London, staying in the High Street Kensington neighborhood. Lucky for us, we were a block from the Olympia Exhibition Center where the “Doctor Who” Experience was being hosted. Paul grew up with the “Doctor” and introduced me to the series several years ago — it’s the longest running sci-fi series in television history. Never did we expect to enter one of the Doctor’s “TARDIS” or fight with the “Daleks. To learn what I’m talking about, check out the show for yourself. Needless to say, Paul was enthralled. While in London we visited with Gareth Davis, a frequent Key West visitor, who is

in charge of editorial content for The Travel Channel International. We also spent time with Aidan Conway of SKY Television and Frank Bond, and we caught the West End musical hit “Jersey Boys” in Soho. We then explored Bournemouth and Brighton and their beaches. We found it really startling to see people at the beach in sweaters and jackets, but that’s not unusual for the area. When you visit us here in Key West, leave those things at home. This U.K. beach at Weymouth looks a lot different than the sun-drenched Keys beaches -- and there’s something different about the sky, too. If you know the Duchess and Lulu, you know they write a blog called “Across the Pond” about happenings in the U.K. They also own a flat here in Key West, and you can see them in their outrageous outfits during Fantasy Fest. Gay Rights: Still a Long Way to Go Keen News Service

T

he LGBT movement is making progress, but it’s being seriously outspent by opponents and still has “a long way” to go to reach equality. That’s the conclusion of an in-depth analysis by an independent think tank devoted to studying how best to marshal the LGBT movement’s resources to “speed advancement of equality for LGBT people.” And it’s a hard-edged conclusion in a year which has seen many dramatic gains for the movement –repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, significant federal court rulings against the Defense of Marriage Act, and a swing in public opinion toward support for samesex marriage. But the report, prepared by the five-yearold Movement Advancement Project, is

“short-term.” They said the movement “may be hitting a wall in some areas,” noting that, in 28 states, there has been “little progress” toward passing non-discrimination laws. “While things are improving on the coasts and in the upper middle west,” said Sears to the OutGiving Conference, “they’re not improving equally across the country, and we need to focus on these states where things are lagging behind.” Those states include Texas, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and Arizona. The presentation also noted that while 550 LGBT non-profit groups collected a total of $574 million in contributions during 2009, most of that money ($299 million or 52 percent) went to providing health services and community center programs. About $192 million (33 percent) was spent on advocacy, and about $35 million (6 percent) on legal challenges. Arts and recreation accounted for about $36 million (6 percent). Only $13 million (2 percent) is spent on public education. And, as reported in a study released by MAP earlier this year, revenue to LGBT groups dropped by 20 percent between 2008 and 2009. But both the written report and the OutGiving presentation included a long list of advancements by the movement, including increasing public support and increasing bipartisan support of civil rights for LGBT people. The reports note that the LGBT movement has gotten better at working with its allies to accomplish its goals. The number of states with “safe school laws” addressing the issue of bullying of LGBT youth has gone from zero in 2001 to 14 today. “Much work remains to be done,” concludes the report, “but strong and growing public and political support, along with a growing list of legislative successes, shows that momentum is on the side of progress.”

A Personal Narrative

SFGN’s ‘Reverend’ Tony Adams Performs Two Same-Sex Marriages in Nyc By Tony Adams

A

t the busy southwest corner of New York City’s Central Park, on Saturday, July 30, a short walk from where the archbishop of New York was probably sitting down to a fine lunch, I legally joined two same-sex couples in marriage at an event called “Popupchapel” concocted by a group of young professional writers and TV producers who wanted to celebrate New York’s newly legislated marriage equality. Two fanciful mini-chapels were built by architects who had won the design competition. Make-up, flowers, photography, video and food were all donated. The 24 couples and 12 officiants were selected from hundreds of applicants. My couples were paired with me because three of the four spouses were raised Roman Catholic. All along the metal police barricades that kept back the crowd of tourists and passersby who stopped to watch the 24 weddings that took place that day were families from around the world who applauded and whistled as each newlywed couple was presented. Parents explained to children the importance of what they were witnessing. The pen erected for protestors a safe distance from the event remained empty throughout the day. Out of the corner of my eye I kept thinking that I caught a glimpse of Jesus Christ standing in the supportive crowd, smiling hugely and cheering the newlyweds. Reporters who questioned me about my involvement heard me say that I believe that this is why I was ordained. Simply to do what Jesus himself would do if he were still among us in the flesh. I had not a moment of doubt about the correctness of my actions, although I suspect the archbishop of New York may have experienced an inexplicable shudder as I raised my hand to trace the sign of the cross over Rose and Jen, delivering the traditional Catholic blessing in Latin. CPAC Denies GOProud Conservative Conference Bans Gay Republican Group

By Jason Parsley

T

he American Conservative Union recently sent a letter to GOProud informing them that they would not be allowed to co-sponsor the group’s annual Conservative Political Action Conference. This year GOProud, a national LGBT republican organization, was a co-sponsor of CPAC and also participated in it in 2010. “As a courtesy to your organization, a previous co-sponsor of CPAC, this letter serves to inform you GOProud will not be invited to participate in a formal role for CPAC event scheduled during the 2012 election cycle,” the letter read. However the ACU graciously also tells GOProud members they are still welcome and encouraged to attend as individuals. GOProud released a statement expressing their disappointment: “For the last two years, GOProud has sought to support CPAC and keep the conservative movement united. Unfortunately,

elements inside and outside of ACU have pushed their own narrow, divisive and sometimes personal agenda. They have

done so at the expense of the conservative movement. What is truly sad is that this troubling development takes place at a time

when we should be united and focused on defeating Barack Obama.” The conservative movement has been at odds with itself over GOProud’s involvement in the conference since GOProud’s formation two years ago. This past year some conservative heavyweights such as Andrew Breitbart and Sarah Palin expressed the group should be welcome and allowed to attend, while Ann Coulter spoke at GOProud’s 2010 “Homocon” fundraiser in New York City. However other conservative groups such as The Heritage Foundation, Family Research Council, and American Family Association, along with Sen. Jim DeMint and republican hopeful Mike Huckabee decided to boycott the 2011 CPAC because of GOProud’s inclusion. In April Executive Director of GOProud Jimmy LaSalvia told SFGN he was surprised at some of the resistance. “Our experience at CPAC though was overwhelming positive and [people] were thanking us for being there,” he said. Visit GOProud.org to learn more about the organization.

Last Gay Nazi Death Camp Survivor Dies

Associated Press

B

ERLIN – Rudolf Brazda, believed to be the last surviving person who was sent to a Nazi concentration camp because of his homosexuality, has died, a German gay rights group said Thursday. He was 98. The Berlin branch of the Lesbian and Gay Association, or LSVD, said that Brazda died on Wednesday. It didn’t give details of the location or cause of death. Brazda was sent to the Nazis’ Buchenwald concentration camp in August 1942 and held there until its liberation by U.S. forces in 1945. Nazi Germany declared homosexuality an aberration that threatened the German race, and convicted some 50,000 homosexuals as criminals. An estimated 10,000 to

15,000 gay men were deported to concentration camps, where few survived. When a memorial to the Nazis’ gay victims was unveiled in Berlin in 2008, the LSVD said the last ex-prisoner that it knew of had died three years earlier. But the group said it was then contacted by Brazda, who visited the memorial at its invitation and became an honorary member. Brazda was born in 1913. He grew up in the eastern German town of Meuselwitz and repeatedly ran into trouble with Nazi authorities over his homosexuality before being sent to Buchenwald. Brazda lived in the Alsace region of eastern France after World War II. Earlier this year, he was named a knight in the country’s Legion of Honor.

Commentary: Defending Allen West

Tolerance Goes Both Ways A Reaction to SFGN’s ‘West Invitation Stirs a Nationwide Hornets’ Nest’

By Javier Manjarres

Editor and Publisher of “Sharktank”

T

he sudden cancellation by the Wilton Manors (otherwise known as the Gay part of Fort Lauderdale, Florida) Business Association of an appearance by republican Congressman Allen West is nothing more than the same type of bigotry many in the gay community routinely complain they are the victims of themselves. It’s sad to see that the gay community, at least its leftist leaders, are still living in the stone age and are quite content with the continued marginalization of their ‘community’ by standing against anyone or anything that isn’t painted over with a big fat ‘gay pride flag’. This is the same community that refers to themselves as ‘fags’ and ‘queens’ while also referencing ‘other than gay’ (OTG) citizens as ‘breeders.’ The gay community’s ac-

tions and lingo reminds many of the racially charged vocabulary that blacks in general use to describe themselves and others in the black community. For example, blacks are fine with calling one another ‘ni@@er,’ but don’t let them hear someone who is a couple shades lighter than them say it because that’s “hate” speech. Like it or not, the gay community in Wilton Manors needs to realize that Allen West is a popular sitting Congressman that is business friendly and is a proponent of cutting taxes for small business- sexual preferences should stay out of the political discourse. Just because he does not support homosexual marriage (many gays don’t believe in it either), doesn’t mean that he is actively working against the gay community- he certainly is working in their business interests. West, Congressman West’s wife, regarding the cancelled event: Tolerance “You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.” – Friedrich Nietzsche Some business owners expressed relief Monday on learning that the Wilton Manors Business Association was canceling an appearance by U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Plantation. Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick said he, too, was “relieved that none of our businesses will suffer and that this will not become a controversial issue for our business community.” It was stated “having West, who doesn’t support social issues important to many in the gay community, speak it is an affront to gays and lesbians in Wilton Manors.” “It’s a sensitivity issue to many people in our community who feel denigrated.” So, it is better to make sure that the Congressman does not speak. That he does not address small businesses in the area, politics and the economy? Sometimes it might be better to listen. Perhaps it has become so important to brand people, especially in politics to make sure that you have someone to vilify and hate. It makes it easier to say and behave in certain ways. However, if tolerance were to be achieved by an evening of discussion, it

would have been discovered that Congressman West’s close relative is gay and married to his partner — we love and adore them both. It might have been interesting to meet a good fellow soldier, Sgt. Tammy Barnwell and her partner Lydia. They all served together with the Congressman in the Middle East. And maybe you could have discussed, after the business meeting of course, his views on DADT. What a novel idea, having a personal discussion with a Congressman. But no, it is far more important to vilify, de-personalize and really bar him from speaking. I suppose we as a family will also be prohibited from visiting the realtor we have been working with, eating the passion fruit gelate and our daughters banned from finding those cute, quirky little clothes at the thrift store on the main street. But that is politics, as Sally Phillips, president of the Democratic caucus, said she’s pleased about the cancellation, it is important to silence the other side — in this case the Congressman. You see in our history this silencing has been accomplished against many other groups, I guess in this case it is just repeating itself. Protest Against West Draws Over 100

By Jason Parsley

O

n a hot and humid summer evening, under threatening skies, a newly formed coalition of equal rights activists drew more than 100 people in a rally to censure Allen West for his hostile remarks about the gay community. The Coalition for Fairness and Equality (CoFFE) held its first rally Monday, August 8, at City Hall Square in Wilton Manors, with speaker after speaker taking Congressman Allen West to task for his words that ‘denigrate the LGBT community,’ according to keynote speaker Stuart Milk, nephew of legendary San Francisco gay activist Harvey Milk. Milk pointed out that the comments currently being made by West are unacceptable. “We have a message for Allen West: We’re not going to tolerate your hatred,” said Milk, to a supportive crowd of nearly 125 people.

Many of them held placards with quotes lifted from West’s own talks. Dean Trantalis, a Wilton Manors attorney, moderated the event, which was hosted by a bipartisan coalition of activists who crossed party lines, as representatives of both the Log Cabin Republicans and Democratic clubs spoke. One speaker, Jowharah Sanders censured West as a “bully…who preaches hateful things.” The chairman of the Broward Democratic party, Mitch Ceasar, urged the gathering to mobilize their forces to defeat West in his 2012 re-election bid, stating that “no one deserves Allen West.” One of the already announced opponents of West,

Wilton’s Manor Doggie Daycare & Grooming

By Brian Swinford

W

ilton’s Manor Doggie Daycare had their Grand Opening, Aug 3. The doggie day care is spectacular with enormous space for your best friend to frolic and play with other dogs. Josh and Alan, the owners of this establishment, believe in a cage free doggie day care. They treat their guests just like they were at home with a 900-square-foot play area, and a doggie pool in the rear. “Here, every dog has its day,” as Josh and Alan say. With so much room, they can handle 30 large dogs and about ten small ones.Your four-legged friend might not want to leave. Josh and Alan have made their doggie day care with unique amenities, like organic doggie treats, and a big screen projector showing Animal Planet all day. The Daycare is also an exclusive provider of John Paul Pet Products, which are

all organic, healthy alternatives for your pet. Josh and Alan also have many unique leashes and collars imported from Africa. These brightly colored collars were hand made by an African tribe. All the proceeds go back to Africa to help with poverty. For the patrons that just like to watch their pets play with other dogs the Daycare also provides free Wi-Fi and beverages for all. Call 754.223.4776 or visit WiltonsManor.com for more information.

CoFFE’s first rally deemed a success; promises future events

Democratic primary candidate Patrick Murphy, attended the meeting, and was greeted warmly by the crowd. Allen West declined an invitation to the event.

West’s Chief of Staff Jonathan Blyth responded in a letter and claimed West couldn’t be expected to attend an “11th hour” event. However, CoFFE, made sure to organize the event at the same time West was suppose to be in the city anyway for the Wilton Manors Business Association’s August 8 meeting, which was cancelled. The letter went on to say “…the Congressman does not adhere to every group that requests his attendance at a rally on a street corner.” As the crowd gathered and flowed into the street, a police presence was necessary to control traffic flow. Many of the drivers honked their horns in support of the crowd, seen holding up signs mocking the words of Allen West, such as “I am against inclusion,’ or another which read ‘Gay marriage will lead to the end of society.’ Organizers of the rally, such as attorneys Trantalis and Miriam Richter said CoFFE, intends to broaden their base and become a force in future elections. They are in the process of creating a website and have already set up a Facebook page. They plan to meet again after Labor Day.

Sexuality has been channeled out of mainstream art for so long.” That said, Olson argues that his work is not strictly erotic in nature, but just an expression of his classicist perspective. His style has been compared to the cubist works of Pablo Picasso, although Olson thoroughly rejects contemporary and conceptual art created after 1918-20. Wilzig, who selected the works for the exhibit, still describes the Olson’s style as “strangely erotic, bright and cheerful. There is an element of surrealism, which is the art of the mind, not realistic, but rather someone’s thoughts interpreted through their art.” She also finds inspiration in his story. “What a person is capable of doing without formal training, drawing on his lunch hour, sketching for hours on end

Nobody has seen them, except his neighbors and friends and even the paintings on display here are massive.” And unlike most guest artists who exhibit at the museum, Olson was not interested in selling his paintings. “Picasso did something like 50,000 paintings over his lifetime. I work slow and have done 400,” says Olson. “I don’t normally do shows, so this is very different for me.”

Cuban-American lesbian filmmaker discusses latest project By Andrea Dulanto

orty is not the new thirty. No matter what the self-help books say, despite the Botox or just plain denial—when you turn forty, you are actually forty years old. Enter stage left, midlife crisis, all of its attendant clichés—a sports car, an affair, a trip to Greece. If you’re Cuban-American lesbian filmmaker Anna Margarita Albelo (Hooters!, A Lez in Wonderland), then your discontent becomes a semiautobiographical screenplay with a vivid title: “Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf?” As stated on Albelo’s web site (VaginaWolf.com), the story is about a forty-year-old lesbian who “sacrificed her love life for her film career, realizes she has neither and so decides to embark on filming an all-female parody of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf [sic].’ ” Elizabeth Taylor would approve. Albelo offers her perspective on the film: “‘Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf?’… shar[es] one person’s process in creating a better life... I used to say the film was about a woman who realizes she has nothing. Now, I realize it’s about a woman who still wants it all!” An award-winning filmmaker with honors from Tribeca Film Festival and Miami International Film Festival, Albelo’s influences include Italian film director Federico Fellini and Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar. Politics are integral to her art. “I try to be a fun entertaining feminist... everything I create is linked to my experience of being a woman, a lesbian, a Latina but also incorporates who I am as a funny, curious, emotional person,” she said.

Growing up Cuban-American in Miami was also influential for Albelo. “I’m lucky to have lived in a community that knew how to preserve its identity and still be... proud Americans.” “Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf?” includes the notable talents of screenwriter Michael Urban (Saved!), Guinevere Turner (The L Word, Go Fish), Tammy Lynn Michaels (Popular), Whitney Mixter (The Real L Word), and stand-up comic Bridget McManus (LOGO). Albelo starts filming this winter in Los Angeles.Yet the issue is funding. If a film isn’t about an English boy with a wand, then it’s often not financially feasible. “The ‘financial powers that be’ [can’t seem] to equate an audience for… [Latina] films…,” she said. Wands aside, Albelo has the power of the vagina. Her focus is on resolution: “Filmmakers need to create… [Hispanic] films. Latinos/Hispanics need to…support the films. We all have to be involved if we want things to change.” Albelo recently took action for her film with an IndieGoGo fundraising campaign (IndieGoGo.com/WhosAfraidofVaginaWolf), reaching out to all who support women filmmakers. Whether contributors gave $10 or $1000, they received a thank you gift— everything from stickers, film posters, a date with Guinevere Turner or tickets to private film screenings. Albelo came close to her goal of $25,000 with $22,905. The fundraising continues at the Vagina Wolf website. Visit VaginaWolf.com or IndieGoGo.com/WhosAfraidofVaginaWolf for more information.

TRY THIS EXERCISE CABLE PULL THROUGH Here’s an interesting and effective way to pump up your glutes and hamstrings. STEP ONE: Using the rope attachment at a cable machine, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your back to the weight stack. Hold one end of the rope in each hand between your legs. Arch your back and bend at the hips and knees while lowering your torso to a 45-degree angle to the floor. STEP TWO: Squeeze your

The key to big, broad shoulders Q: I’ve been told that working the shoulder muscles isn’t really necessary as those muscles are worked in the course of building other muscles like the back and chest. I’m starting to doubt that as my chest is looking really good but my shoulders haven’t grown at all. Help! A: Big, broad shoulders on a man are a beautiful thing. They complement your arms, chest and back and punctuate a well-developed upper body. While appearances are important, there are two reasons why strengthening the shoulder muscles is so important: 1) It’s the best defense we have to preventing painful, often debilitating injuries to the shoulder joint including dislocation or, worse, a torn rotator cuff; and 2) The shoulder muscles assist in most exercises for your chest, back and arms; consequently weak shoulders mean those muscle groups won’t reach their full potential. The deltoid (musculus deltoideus) plays a critical role in building strong shoulder muscles. This is the large triangular muscle covering the shoulder joint, which allows movement, extension and rotation of the arm. It’s made up of three sections – the front, middle and rear deltoid. Also critical to improving your shoulder strength is working the upper traps (trapezius), located between the neck and shoulders.

C. Randall Alan demonstrates the Cable Pull Through. The Shoulder Press is – hands-down – the best exercise to develop the front and middle delts as well as the traps. Avoid this exercise, however, if you are experiencing any shoulder pain! My recommendation is to restrict overhead pressing exercises such as the Shoulder Press to just one per workout and instead utilize Cable or Dumbbell Flyes, Lateral Raises, Shrugs and other exercises to avoid putting too much stress on the shoulder joints. Here are two of my favorite exercises to help build big, strong shoulders. Ask a personal trainer at your gym or training facility to recommend others. SIDE-LYING LATERAL RAISE: Lie on your left side on an incline bench with a dumbbell in your right hand and your palm facing your thigh. Without bending your elbow, raise your arm until it’s in line with your shoulder as your rotate your palm outward. Return to the starting position and lift your arms above your head. Repeat from the beginning.

TIP OF THE WEEK

How much water should you drink? Despite the heat of summer and the increase in outdoor activities, the majority of us are not drinking enough water! Needs vary between individuals, but a good rule of thumb is to divide your bodyweight by 2 and drink that number in ounces. That means a person who weighs 150 pounds should drink roughly 75 ounces of water (about 4 standard bottles) while a 200-pound individual should consume about 100 ounces (approximately six bottles of water).
