ut your hands together for Bill’s on Wilton Drive, the ‘Bartenders, Boxers & Briefs Underwear Auction’ benefit for Tuesdays Angels was able to raise $10,319. SFGN purchased a gym membership from Island City Fitness at the event, and the office debate is, do I auction it off online or use it myself, since I have become an elephant on Earth?

…Thanks go out to Don Clark, manager at Bill’s, the entire staff of Bill’s and every bar and bartender that participated in this annual event. …Congratulations to financial planner Dan Pye, a regular advertiser here at SFGN. We are pleased to announce that Morgan Stanley was featured in the 2011 August/September edition of MetroSource’s “Companies That Care” article.

…Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-Miramar) sent a letter along with Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20), Ted Deutch (FL-19), and Frederica Wilson (FL-17) to Health and Human Services Secretary Sebelius regarding the urgent need for additional funds to address the ongoing AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) crisis in Florida. It’s online in this week’s SFGN headlines, which you can receive daily from us in your email. …At the same time, the AIDS Health Care Foundation posted a release also lauding Florida’s United States Senator, Marco Rubio, for his letter to Secretary Sebelius, also proposing a reallocation of funds for ADAP. Did you realize that over 9,000 people in 13 states are on AIDS Drug Assistance Program waiting lists for access to lifesaving medicines, including more than 3,700 in Florida, with the third highest AIDS rate in the nation? Which explains why events like the ones at Bill’s are still so important to our community.

…Mexico has been keeping statistics on their gay marriages, and I’m guessing it’s not part of Michele Bachmann’s campaign speeches. For your information, the first 1000 weddings involved 548 gay couples and 452 lesbian pairs. Mexico’s average marriage age is 28 for men and 25 for women. The 1000th wedding took place Sunday, and surprisingly, Pompano Bill was not there to take the picture.

Miami’s Crossover King Joe Granda

By Tony Adams

T

here are countless crossover professionals, including psychics, undertakers, clergy, surgeons and home renovators willing to transport or transform you, but there is only one man to call if you are a Latin entertainer who wants to make the jump to popularity in the gay market: Miami’s Joe Granda. As CEO and founder of “Granda Entertainment” which merges the Latino and Anglo markets and also helps Latino stars reach the LGBT community, Joe has assisted an impressive list of clients, including Shakira, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, Gloria Trevi and Elvis Crespo. Born in Cuba and one of the 2979 refugees who took advantage of Castro’s 1965 one-month permission to leave the country via the port of Camarioca, Joe’s own crossover barely succeeded. He remembers the taste of his first Burger King sandwich aboard the Navy ship that rescued him when the small boat containing his family began to fail before reaching Key West. He was raised by his grandmother and gives her credit for his artistry.

“She brought me up in the arts. She knew how to sew, she made me puppets and she got me into ventriloquism. I started doing shows and promoting my act. When I was 9 years old I landed my own TV show on what is now Univision. The only way my parents would allow this was if I continued in school, so I had to do the show on weekends only,” Joe recalls. Joe would have his dummy do songs as part of his routine. His producer liked his voice and suggested that he move into a singing career. At the age of 15, Joe formed a group called “Majesty.” They were signed by a Miami indie label and recorded their first album in 1975. Joe recalls his high school years fondly. “I had a lot of fun, being in a band. I was popular but I got into a lot of trouble. I ended up going to all three high schools in my district. I wanted to become a lawyer. I wanted to be able to draft my own contracts and to protect myself, but I spent more time in chorus, music and drama.” Joe ran for student council, but lost to classmate and ex-CNN anchor Rick Sanchez. He studied business at Miami-Dade Community College and began to work big clubs, organize talent contests, and, out of necessity, he began booking bands to fill engagements. Joe explains how he got into the LatinoAnglo and straight-gay crossover business. “I grew up listening to the Beatles, the Stones and Journey, but every family party was all about salsa and meringue. I have the Latino rhythm in me. I am half way between both worlds so I was perfect for doing crossover. Also, I grew up in the heavy machismo of the Latino culture. I never felt comfortable with the idea of ‘coming out’ to my parents. It was not a topic of discussion.

I would be watching TV with them and hear their homophobic comments about Tiny Tim. At least there was Cristina Saralegui on TV who was one of my heroes. She is called “The Spanish Oprah.” She had a gay brother and she was a champion for gay rights, and opened up the hearts of many Latino people to accepting gays.” In 1993, Ricky Martin released a single called “Maria.” For marketing strategy, Sony sought the help of Right Touch Productions where Joe worked as the crossover promotion director. He makes his success sound simple. “I suggested that Ricky Martin do an English version of the song, and that we produce some remixes. With these, we could create some buzz at the clubs. ‘Maria’ started in Miami and jumped to Texas and soon it was everywhere on the radio, and then Sony went international with it and we kept crossing it back and forth.” Today, Joe has perfected the art of intro-

ducing Latino music stars to gay consumers. He pairs them with DJs who remix their work, he books them into gay venues and cities and he arranges coverage in gay media. He will help them only when he is sure that their motives are sincere. He will not work with those who say they are pro-LGBT but only want the gay dollar without giving actual support. He admires Laura Leon who promoted condom use despite church backlash. He praises La India for her support for marriage equality. “It takes a lot of balls to be Elvis Crespo who is straight and married and very big in Puerto Rico but who supports equality and the right to love,” he says. “Once, on a Gloria Trevi concert tour, I saw a woman with a sign that said ‘Thanks. Because of you I have learned to accept my lesbian daughter.’ I have seen kids cry when they meet the artists who helped them accept themselves. I love my work.” Visit GrandEntertainment.com for more information.

Nevada Gay Households Up by 87 Percent in 2010 Associated Press

L

AS VEGAS (AP) The number of same-sex couples sharing a home in Nevada nearly doubled from 2000 to 2010, revealing a budding constituency in a state where voters have banned gay marriage, but embraced domestic partnerships. Nearly 4,600 homes in Nevada were headed by lesbian couples at the end of the last decade, according to Census data released this week, while 4,724 households were headed by two male partners. The data shows that the number of gay and lesbian households in Nevada jumped 87 percent during the last decade, and about a quarter of those couples are raising children. Lesbian couples were more likely than the male couples to have children at home. In all, Nevada had more than 9,000 households led by same-sex couples in 2010, up from fewer than 5,000 such households counted in 2000. To be sure, same-sex couples living together remained a minuscule population among Nevada’s more than a million households. But their swelling ranks reflect Nevada’s increasingly gay friendly stance less than a decade after 67 percent of the state’s voters defined marriage as “between a male and female person.’’ “Folks who are LGBT may not have been excited (before) to move here from, say California, where they enjoy a lot of legal protections,’’ said Michael Ginsburg, southern Nevada director for the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada. “Now that Nevada is catching up, that may not be a factor for people anymore.’’ It’s also possible some of the new samesex households reflect an increased willingness among gay couples to come out to the government, rather than actual growth. The Census doesn’t capture the overall gay population in Nevada, because it doesn’t allow single people to identify their sexual orientation. Gay activists insist Nevada is home to many more gay couples who cohabitate, and that the 2010 Census numbers only reflect people who were comfortable identifying

own comfort levels.’’ Ginsburg said he couldn’t recall if he or his live-in partner had confirmed that they were a couple to the Census. He wondered if gay couples were not coming out to the federal government because the survey does not allow unmarried participants to identify themselves by specific terms, Volunteers for the Youth Thanksgiving Dinner at the such as transgender or domestic Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada partners. 9 state,’ which is laughable,’’ Ginsburg said. The Las Vegas Valley, where most of the state’s 2.6 million people live, is home to the majority of Nevada’s same-sex households. As with many states, Nevada has become more gay friendly in recent years, passing local and state laws recognizing the rights of domestic partners. The state Legislature passed a law recognizing domestic partners in 2009, but only after then Republican Gov Jim Gibbons vetoed it. State leaders went further this year, passing a series of laws that extended discrimination protections to transgender people and prohibited housing or employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. Casino executives, the state’s business elite, have supported the pro-equality measures. Still, overturning a gay marriage ban passed by Nevada voters in 2002 could take years because of the state’s complicated constitutional amendment process. Nichols said marriage equality proponents in Nevada agree their best option is to wait for the federal government to recognize gay marriage. “It’s going to be much easier for the states to say, `wait a minute, the federal government finds this unconstitutional,’’ she said.

Czech President Attacks Diplomats Over Petition By Karel Janicek Associated Press

P

RAGUE (AP) The Czech president lashed out Monday at 13 ambassadors for their petition in support of a gay pride festival in the Czech capital, and refused to distance himself from a deputy who linked homosexuality to sexual deviation. Vaclav Klaus, a conservative politician and economist, said he considered the statement by the diplomats based in Prague – including U.S. Ambassador Norman Eisen – an “unprecedented step’’ as he could not imagine any Czech ambassador would dare use a petition to influence a political discussion in any democratic country. In their statement, the ambassadors expressed their “solidarity with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in the Czech Republic, supporting their right to use the occasion to march together peacefully and lawfully, in order to raise awareness of the specific issues that affect them.’’ “Everyone, including gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people should be free to enjoy the rights and freedoms to which people of all nations are entitled,’’ the joint statement, attributed to ambassadors from Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the U.S., said. Klaus said in a statement that he fully

agreed with his Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg’s reaction to the ambassadors, that nobody in the Czech Republic has denied or rejected gay rights, so for the diplomats to express support was “counterproductive and redundant.’’ Klaus said the issue at stake was not the approval of the festival, but that Prague mayor Bohuslav Svoboda -- a member of the ruling conservative Civic Democratic Party – is publicly supporting it. Klaus on Friday defended criticism of Svoboda by his deputy chancellor, Petr Hajek. Hajek has said the event is “a political demonstration ... of a world in which sexual or any other deviation becomes virtue,’’ and called on Svoboda to leave his party. Major opposition party, the Social Democrats, and junior ruling coalition party, the Public Affairs party, have called on Hajek to apologize. Klaus, however, has refused to distance himself from Hajek’s words, going one further and stating that he, too, is not proud of the event. Since 2006, parliament approved a law, despite a veto by Klaus, allowing same sex partners to live in an officially registered partnership and have rights to inheritance and health care similar to those enjoyed by heterosexual married couples. The law, however, does not allow same-sex partners to marry or adopt. The first Prague gay pride festival opens Wednesday.

Triepa was recently fired from her job at CENESEX. The couple believes this was because of her choice to marry Estrada, 31, a member of the group LGBT, vocal critic of CENESEX, and a gay man. Yoani Sanchez, a well-know blogger, replaced Mariela Castro, who was to be the witness at the wedding. When questioned by the press about the relationship, the bride, breathless from the heat and swarm of photographers, politely said, “I hope that this marriage will not be seen as an insult to Mariela.” The couple first met on May 13 at a meeting at CENESEX. Both were in what Triepa described as “suffocating” relationships and quickly decided to leave their partners and start a relationship together. Three months later they are now husband and wife. Although Estrada affirms his homosexuality he speaks openly about his love for Triepa and how she is a “completely functioning woman.” Many people in the couple’s neighborhood of La Sera have approached Triepa’s sister and ask why she would marry a dissident and man who is HIV positive. Triepa

responds that, “people think that AIDS is a ferocious wolf, a bug that is coming to eat you. He is not the first positive man I have shared my life with. In the meantime I use a condom and protect myself, so I don´t have a problem with it.” Triepa arrived to the event enthroned on the back of a Ford and held a huge rainbow flag that matched the ribbons tied to her bouquet of red roses. Smiling and waving to onlookers, she seemed completely unaware of the rain that was soaking her white dress. Many groups who are well known for criticizing the Castro government attended the celebration of around one hundred individuals. Women from The Ladies in White, a group of relatives and wives of political prisoners mingled with members of the gay community and dissident bloggers. A representative from the United States Interests Section in Cuba was also in attendance with his wife. At the reception, when asked about the significance of the wedding, witness and blogger Yaoni Sanchez said, “this is a first step, but now it is up to others to follow [the couple] from behind.” When asked about their plans for the future Estrada said, “we would like to make something together but we are not sure exactly. I think what we will create will be a foundation, a space for everyone. A space for youth.”

Queer Speak There has been so much controversy sometimes about what I’ve said or done because I believe there are no mistakes, because God is the only one who can judge us. That’s the reason I deleted my Twitter account because I said on there that I believed in gay marriage because everyone should have the right to love each other, and I got such hate mail about my being a bad person. – Singer Miley Cyrus on Twitter and gay marriage

Where the Girls Are: Womenfest in Key West By Andrea Dulanto

I

f you’re a lesbian who didn’t get her Pride on this summer -- or even if you did and want more -- then consider the th 25 annual Womenfest in Key West, September 6-11 hosted by The Key West Business Guild. This Sapphic paradise welcomes thousands of women and presents a diverse schedule of activities over six days, including the arts, music, sports, sightseeing tours, and girl-watching by the pool. “One of the things that is so exciting about Womenfest is the broad demographics that it attracts… just about anybody can find just the right way to spend their days … and their nights,” states KWBG Executive Director, Rebecca Tomlinson. There is definitely a party vibe—bikini contests, try-not-to-spill-your-drink-in-theclothing-optional-pool kind of activities. Southernmost Hotel, Alexander’s Guesthouse, Aqua Nightclub and Pearl’s Key West are some places to find your inner hedonist. Several activities are free or offered at a discounted cost. Tomlinson confirms that “many of the pool parties and dance parties are free…parties that charge a cover keep their prices low… you could just hang out by the pool…and go home feeling like you

had a tropical vacation.” Womenfest also supports your intellectual side. On the schedule—a literary reading by Ronni Sanlo, an exploration of visual arts and music by singer-songwriter guitarists Natalia Zukerman and Adrianne Gonzalez, and the U.S. premiere of the awardwinning British documentary Jan’s Coming Out directed by CaroReid. In the movie, Jan Walker, described by Reid as “an effervescent 50-year-old Baby Dyke,” speaks with writers, actors and others about their experiences as lesbians. Singer Jennifer Corday, and comedians Julie Goldman and Jackie Monahan appear in the film and perform at Womenfest. “Womenfest is a fantastic celebratory event and Jan’s Coming Out is a fantastic celebratory film. It seems like a perfect match,”

says Reid who will attend Thursday night’s premiere as well as a Q & A session with Jan and producer Alison Thompson. Hone your sense of humor with comedians Goldman and Monahan as well as Gloria Bigelow at Friday night’s “Curiously Strong Comedy” show. When asked about performing at Womenfest, Bigelow voices what many visitors may feel: “Beautiful women in a beautiful place. I have absolutely no complaints.” Monahan professes: “I have been in love with Key West since I was a teenager reading Hemingway… It is especially exciting to be… [there] for Womenfest. I like the ladies!!!” Can they convince women to go to their comedy show instead of a bar? Goldman advises everyone to “…combine all your favorite activities. Getting inebriated, lezzin

out, and laughing your ass off.” Bigelow elaborates: “If you stay at the bar… you’ll end up sloppy, dry-mouthed… standing on the corner arguing with your new girlfriend who you met the night before. This show will keep you hydrated and save your relationship.” Live music events include DeBlois Milledge, Jennifer Corday & the Cougars, Shelly Bush & the BroadBAND, and others. For the past five years, Sister Funk has been a Womenfest music favorite, playing rock and all else that moves the dance floor. Recently inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame, Sister Funk appears throughout the week at Hog’s Breath Saloon, and performs on a Sunset Dinner Cruise on Friday night. Band co-founder Denise Troy observes “Usually Women’s festivals are concentrated to the ‘festival’ site... at Womenfest you fully experience what Key West has to offer.” She adds that “women are…empowered in a safe and encouraging environment and have a fantastic time…” Tomlinson also credits the uniqueness of Womenfest to Key West: “Our city motto is One Human Family…we don’t invite you to hang out at a hotel or a bar, we invite you to an island and into a lifestyle…We live the way other people vacation…that’s the experience we want our visitors to have.”

24 Hours In Chattanooga By Joey Amato

submitted photo

C

hattanooga is one of the most historic cities in Tennessee. A pivotal Civil war battleground, the city has earned its place in United States history. The word “Chattanooga” is a Creek word meaning “rock coming to a point” and it is thought to be a description of Lookout Mountain, one of the attractions we visited. Chattanooga’s main attraction is without a doubt the Tennessee Aquarium, home to a collection of thousands of animals, divided amongst two buildings: River Journey and Ocean Journey. The first stop on our visit is River Journey, the aquarium’s original building and features freshwater creatures and habitats from the Southeast and around the world. Visitors can explore two living forests under glass and get face to face with giant catfish, prehistoric sturgeon and alligators. Ocean Journey takes visitors beneath the waves where 10-foot sharks, fierce barracuda and graceful stingrays glide through amazing coral formations. Other galleries showcase cuttlefish, squid, crabs and jellyfish. An indoor rainforest showcases the aquarium’s butterfly exhibit. After touring the aquarium, head over to IMAX and enjoy, Born to be Wild 3D, an inspiring story of love, dedication and the remarkable bond between humans and animals, narrated by Morgan Freeman. The film documents orphaned orangutans and elephants and the extraordinary people who rescue and raise them. This heartwarming adventure transports viewers into the lush rainforests of Borneo and across the rugged Kenyan savannah as they watch the animals be rehabilitated and returned back to the wild. Operated by the aquarium is the River Gorge Explorer, a 70-passenger catamaran, which transports guests downstream into “Tennessee’s Grand Canyon,” the Tennessee River Gorge. This scenic waterway is home to a remarkable array of plants and animals in addition to historic mansions. Angled seating allows each guest to enjoy the scenic beauty and wildlife. The 3-hour sunset cruise is not to be missed. After a long day of sightseeing, check into

Sheraton Read House

the Sheraton Read House. Nestled in the heart of downtown Chattanooga, the historical property combines Georgian architecture with modern amenities, including an indoor pool, fitness center and spacious guest rooms complete with complimentary wireless Internet, feather and down pillows and luxury linens. The hotel is also home to Porter’s Steakhouse, voted one of the best restaurants. There is also a Starbucks Coffee located in the hotel’s lobby. Well-rested and ready for adventure, we head to Rock City, one of the city’s greatest attractions. The destination, said to have been “created by God and enhanced by man,” is a unique geological and botanical wonder. Located toward the top of historical Lookout Mountain, the attraction offers people the opportunity to experience enchanting beauty as they adventure along a nature trail, with added man-made entities. The adventure begins as guests wind in and out of narrow rock formations and caverns. Intertwined into the attraction are Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village, a fun experience for any age. One cannot deny Rock City’s overall beauty. The massive rock formations are estimated to be 200 million years old and the panoramic views of seven states from the observation deck at 1,700 feet above sea-level are unparalleled. If that isn’t enough, Rock City features a majestic 100-foot waterfall and thrill-seeking swing-along bridge suspend-

ed hundreds of feet high. Also located on Lookout Mountain is the mystical Ruby Falls, one of the largest underground waterfalls in the world. Discovered in 1928 by cave enthusiast Leo Lambert, Ruby Falls is also located in one of the deepest commercial caves, at a staggering 1,120 feet underground. Guests visiting Ruby Falls for the first time will not know what to expect. Upon being transported via elevator hundreds of feet below, visitors are welcomed into an enormous cave, which doesn’t give any indication that it is home to a gigantic waterfall.

As a tour guide leads a group through a maze of rock formations, one can only be in amazement of what Lambert went through to discover the falls, which he named after his wife. After a nearly a 30-minute hike past breathtaking stalagmites and stalactites, the cavern opens up and visitors get a glimpse of the awe-inspiring wonder. Enhanced by multi-colored lights, Ruby Falls is one of the most thrilling sights in Chattanooga. Guests are encouraged to walk around the falls to really appreciate its sheer beauty. Chattanooga is definitely a place that can be enjoyed by history buffs and thrill seekers alike, and, visitors should take in a little of both for the best experience. Who would have thought we could do all of this in just 24 hours? Visit ChattanoogaFun.com for more information.

Coming Out is Still Hard to Do – Even in 2011 By David Webb

C

oming out is still so very hard to do, especially if someone delays doing it for a very long time. That’s what I recently learned when the 40-something-year-old son of a friend of mine confided to me he had finally accepted his sexual orientation and now had a boyfriend. He broke the news to me by saying, “I’m involved in a new relationship with someone, and his name is … .” The ironic part of all this is my friend, his mother, told me when her son was about 13-years-old she was pretty sure he would be gay. She was an interior decorator, had lived in liberal cities prior to moving to Texas and had quite a few gay and lesbian friends. I thought she might be correct in her assessment. Despite my friend’s worldliness and acceptance of her friends’ homosexuality, she expressed a concern that her son’s life would be much tougher if he indeed turned out to be gay. We had this conversation about 20 years ago so her assessment seemed reasonable enough at the time. I had to agree that being gay certainly hadn’t made my life any easier up to that point, especially in light of the raging AIDS epidemic that was killing many of my friends and scaring me to death. As it turned out, her fears about him being gay seemed to be unfounded. He went off to college, met a girl, lived with her, left her and wound up marrying another girl. Two of his best friends from high school with whom he grew up went on to come out and live as openly gay. One died of AIDS in the early 1990s. My friend and I remarked on our surprise about how things had turned out, but we both generally acknowledged we apparently

had been incorrect in our assumptions he would be gay. Still, I had this nagging feeling something wasn’t quite right. I wondered if he was bisexual. My friend’s son and his wife had a child, and they moved away from Texas to the West Coast and a much more liberal environment. They seemed happy for a long time, but then my friend began to confide that her son was having emotional problems. In fact, he had become estranged from other members of his family after a conflict with them before he left Texas. Finally, I heard he and his wife had separated, then divorced. At the same time, my friend and I began drifting apart even though we had been friends for a quarter-century. I noticed her politics were becoming more conservative. She told me she didn’t think the country was ready for same-sex couples enjoying the right to become married. I began to realize her liberal attitudes were only skin deep, and I was disappointed. When my friend’s son told me he was gay, I promised not to say anything about it to anyone until he had charted his course of action. I did advise him that if he planned to tell his teen-aged son I thought he should first tell his ex-wife, whom had become his best friend after their divorce. He also confided to me that when he was a teenager he had fooled around with one of his male friends, and he had felt guilt and shame afterwards. He told me after he accepted his homosexuality and began dating other men, it felt natural for him. After a couple of months he told his wife. She took the news excellently, telling him that she wanted him to be happy. His son seemed to take it in stride while posing a lot of questions. The funniest question he

got from his son was, “Are you going to start wearing dresses now?” Then he called his mother and told her, and she admitted she had known it all of his life. She also began weeping and told him she was concerned it would make his life much harder. In an email to me, she said she was not shocked by his revelation, but it made her sad. She also expressed surprise he had told his son. I’ve always been of the opinion people come out when it is the best time for them to do so. His personal time table required

him to wait about 20 years longer than I did, but that was right for him. He adores his son, enjoys his close friendship with his ex-wife and hopefully will have a good relationship with another man to round out his life. In short, I’m hoping he proves his mother wrong. It doesn’t have to make life tougher in this day and age. David Webb is a veteran journalist who has covered LGBT issues for the mainstream and alternative media for three decades. The Fun Star

August 17, 2011 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com

Singer talks being butch, out and being the first gay country star (before Chely Wright)

k.d.lang:

‘Loud’ and Proud By Chris Azzopardi

K

.d. Lang is manning up, and here’s why: Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and all the other sexpots of pop who shoot whipped cream from their chests and ride disco sticks. In our recent interview with Lang, a longtime gay activist and singer of the purest form who turns 50 later this year, she told us how her decision to boost her butchness was a rebellious choice. The look is evident in “I Confess,” the lead single from the recently released Sing it Loud. K.d.’s first record made

entirely with a band in over 20 years ago, the new album features her sublime voice in all its glory. The singer chatted about the album’s evolution, how being the first out country star doesn’t matter (she doesn’t even know who Chely Wright is), and why she’s proud to have been part of Glee. Why did you approach Sing it Loud with a fuller sound and, for the first time in a while, a band? It just seemed to be the right thing to do. It was just what I was feeling. I was

working with Joe [Pisapia], writing songs, and it came time to record them and I just felt like the band was the right way to approach it – very live and spontaneous and kind of rock. We put the band together and it was beyond my wildest dreams what transpired. We recorded eight songs in three days and the love in the room was palpable, and the communication and the magic was just extraordinarily creative. There’s lots of love on the album. What inspired all of it? We wanted to write something that

was unpretentious and uplifting and made the listener feel good and felt good while we were playing it. It’s not really an autobiographical record because it’s highly collaborative. How will the new songs translate to a live venue? I really believe that the energy that we feel for each other and for the music will translate to the audience – at least I’m hoping, but I’m pretty sure it will. continued from page 26

Broward Bares It: Sexy Evening Serves a Good Purpose By J.W. Arnold

ore than 125 performers will “take it off” this weekend at the Paradise Live Theater at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino to benefit Broward House, the county’s largest HIV/AIDS service organization. On Friday, Aug. 19, Broward Bares It will offer a sexy evening of burlesque, music and comedy. Under the direction of former Miss Florida Nikki Adams and David Meulemans, this year’s theme is “Tantalizing Temptations, Titillating Temptresses and Torrid Testosterone,” featuring 24 acts. “It will be tastefully naughty,” promises Adams, “with a lot of humor. We have two hours of really great acts, both national performers and local, and 100 percent of the proceeds benefit Broward House.” Among the performers recruited by Adams and Meulemans to perform are the

Men of LaBare, Dame Edna, Nelson Polanco, Debra Hampton, Tori Holden, Next Step Dance, C&J Productions, Bambi LaFleur and Angeliki Poularis. Local choreographer William Crowley of Next Step Dance created the glitzy opening and Adams says many more surprises are in store.

Preparations for the show began more than six months ago and organizers expect nearly 500 attendees. The goal for the evening is to raise $50,000, which Adams feels is attainable but fundraising and ticket sales have still fallen short. “We’re certainly hopeful,” she says, not-

ing a few tickets are still available from $25 each at BrowardBaresIt.com. With 12 locations across Broward County, Broward House serves more than 6000 men, women and families with services ranging from housing to medical care. The organization rarely turns away a client, thanks to the support of the community. “Last year was spectacular, but this year is going to be bombastic due to the caliber of talent that has come on board,” says Adams. “We’re able to accommodate a much larger audience at the Paradise Live this year and the show is going to have a Broadway atmosphere. This is definitely one event not to be missed!” Visit BrowardBaresIt.com for tickets. Visit BrowardHouse.org to learn more about the organization.

Broward Center Celebrates 20 Years, Plans for Future

or two decades, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts has been the centerpiece of the county’s cultural arts scene, hosting more than 700 performances and 700,000 patrons each year. As the center wraps up its 20th anniversary year, Chief Executive Officer Kelley Shanley reflects on the past, present and future. “Collaboration is part of our DNA here at the organization,” he explains. “This is due in large part to how the facility came

to be in the first place, a community-wide collaboration with non-profit and four government entities working together.” The center was always intended to be a busy place, according to Shanley, but in the last 10 years, the number of performances at the Broward Center doubled, making it one of the top 10 centers in the country. And, with more performances, the center expanded its audiences, reaching audiences of diverse ages, ethnicities, cultures and sexual orientation. He is particularly proud of statistics that show even distribution of center attendees across the county.

Explain the line “I’ll be your daddy” on “I Confess.” Well, it’s pretty self-explanatory, isn’t it? (Laughs) Definitely, but how did it come about? Was it your line? We were just sitting around and I said to Josh [Grange] and Daniel [Clarke], who I wrote the song with, “I want to write a Roy Orbison song.” It just started coming out of us, and I was just kind of riffing on lyrics and fooling around – “I love you madly,” and I just went, “I’ll be your daddy” – and Josh is like, “Oh my god, that’s so cool. You have to keep it.” How do you think that line would’ve been received had you recorded this song 20 years ago when you first came out of the closet? Probably the same as now. I think there’s going to always be people who feel uncomfortable with it and there’s always going to be people who are titillated by it.You just have to know that’s going to be the case for a long time.

performers today, which seems to be more important than vocal talent these days. But you’ve always been about the voice. What do you make of the way the music business has shifted in the way it sells music? It’s kind of the direction it’s been going. If you’re really a historian you can probably go back to television, to video, to multimedia and see how it sort of extracted it from its purist Would you say you’re embracing your butchness more than you form, which is making music. music, there is always going to be a place for someone who can sing and someone who can communicate with an audience. I don’t think that will ever be in danger, because that’s what separates the cream from the crop. If you can walk on stage and really deliver, yeah – you can’t fake that. Did you ever feel pressure to conform in your career? That would depend on what I wanted to reap from my music. I’ve always been quite sure that I wanted to have a more artistic career and a career of longevity, so in that respect, no. I’ve made decisions that have nurtured my art rather than my public awareness or my celebrity. That’s been selfdetermined, so no, I never felt the pressure. So do you think people who nurture their celebrity status are less likely to endure than people who don’t? I don’t know. I wouldn’t say less likely. You get what you get; it’s fate. You either have a huge amount of success at the beginning and then your career kind of dwindles, or you have something kind of consistent like me and it goes for years and years, or you work really hard and nothing happens and then you explode later on in life. I don’t really think that one is better than the other. If you hadn’t come out publicly at 30 and you were still closeted,

how do you imagine your life and career now? I can’t imagine, because I was always out and coming out wasn’t really a big deal for me just because I was living out to my family, and in the world, for a long time. But it certainly made things easier. I can’t imagine what it would be like, but at the same time it’s definitely made my life easier just because it kind of stripped away the question marks in the audience’s minds or the business mind – the sort of public understanding of who I was. It took away any pretense or any question. So even though in some circumstances it’s more difficult, it’s definitely open and honest, so in that respect it makes it so much easier. There was this big hoopla when Chely Wright came out last year as the first gay country star, because there was the argument that you beat her to it. How did you feel about all that? I don’t know who Chely Wright is. But I don’t care. I mean, to a whole generation of people who know Chely Wright, they probably don’t know who I am, so to them it is the first country star to come out. (Laughs) I don’t really care who’s the first, who’s the last, because before me there were a lot of people that helped get me to a place to feel confident and comfortable with coming out. When you look back at the films that you’ve done in the past, like Eye of the Beholder or Salmonberries, what do you think? Do you watch them? No, I don’t watch them. (Laughs) I don’t watch a lot of movies, and if I were to watch a movie, I certainly wouldn’t pick one of mine. Last year you lent your voice to a song on a Glee soundtrack. Would you ever do the show? I don’t know. I don’t really watch Glee, but I know it’s very popular and very gay friendly, which is great. And Jane Lynch is hilarious. So I guess if they asked me I would consider it, but I’m really happy that I could be a part of something that’s supportive and promotes alternative and varying lifestyles.

a weekly star with

oliver douglas

Oliver Douglas has been a resident of Wilton Manors for 4 years. He is an event manager, singer/ songwriter and freelance writer. Thru this blog, he hopes to share his love of human sexuality, culture, politics, and community action.

This week’s star: Derek Hartley

I

’ve known Derek Hartley for more than 5 years now. Maybe it’s more appropriate to say I was his stalker. Derek Hartley is probably best known for his role as host of The Derek and Romaine show on Sirius XM’s station, OutQ. His often bawdy humor is paired with the timing and instincts of a standup comedian. Derek’s on air persona is self-deprecating and verbose, exposing situational comedy in the every day queerness that is his life. After many years of listening and calling in to his national radio show, and seeing him host numerous gay pride events from Vegas to Fort Lauderdale, I had the chance to ask him a few more questions. This has been such a fun year for your GLAAD award winning show on Sirius XM. You’ve spent time with superstars like Lance Bass, Rutina Wesley (True Blood), Amanda Lepore and many others. Who is your dream guest and what makes them so special? It has been an extraordinary couple of years for us on the show. Winning the GLAAD Award, having the Paley Center for Media turn one of our specials into an interactive feature, being in the Out 100. Those are a lot of big milestones for our show, and I certainly appreciate all of them, as well as the great guests we have had with us on the air. My favorite guests are the ones I grew up with like Jason Bateman or Olivia NewtonJohn. I danced with Charo! As a kid, TV was more real to me than real life so to grow up and meet these people has really been the biggest thrill. Our most recent specials were an hourlong profile of Alan Ball followed by a behind the scenes look at True Blood. Alan has been such an extraordinary creative force in pop culture over the last decade and he was so

generous in trusting us with such a candid interview and access to the people he works with everyday. And that came from him being a listener of our show. Obviously the big name guests are the ones that get the press, but for us the show is all about the listeners we have collected along the way.Yes, some of those listeners are famous like Alan or Rosie O’Donnell or Luke MacFarlane, but we get so much from all the people who listen to the show and come out to see us when we travel. So I think my favorite thing out of the last eight years is the relationship we have forged with all those who have listened along the way. I’ve learned from your book, Colonnade: A Life in Columns, that you’ve religiously blogged about your life (and sex) for well over a decade. Like your radio show, your book and blogs are sexy, funny and snappy. But they often take on a darker, more introspective tone than the show. What can we expect with your upcoming book, When Nightlife Falls? “I give my point of view for four hours everyday on the radio, but I am reluctant to really talk about things that are personal to me. But when I write, I try to be as candid as possible. And as humorous as they are, they do have a darker tone than the radio show. On the radio we are trying to keep people entertained at the end of a long hard day at work. But in a book, you are trying to tell a story. And in a memoir, you are trying to tell your own story. So I try to peel back the layers and let the reader see what is really going on in my mind and how I really feel about what comes my way. For the complete article, go to: sfgn.com/hartley

Gay Softball: It’s Not Just for Gays Anymore By Dan Woog

I

t sounds like a headline straight out of The Onion: Discriminated-against gays discriminate against straights. But the facts – couched a bit more legalistically than that, of course – came straight from a United States District Court judge. Recently, John Coughenour ruled that the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance – which oversees gay softball teams and leagues – stood on firm legal ground in limiting the number of “non-gay” athletes permitted to play in major tournaments. The case began three years ago, when a team in the Gay Softball World Series was charged with having too many “non-gay” players. After intense questioning – which explored athletes’ sexual histories and examined their predominant attractions – a lawsuit was brought. Judge Coughenour’s decision brings an end only to the “non-gay” issue. Still to come: a determination of possible damages due to the “interrogation.” The ruling drew little press notice. But where attention was paid, there were howls of outrage. Pete Olsen – a second-year student at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law – responded on Wide Rights, a website devoted to “gay rights and the sports industry.” “I cannot believe more people are not offended by this,” Olsen wrote – describing the NAGAAA’s policy, not the judge’s ruling. “Hell, I cannot believe the entire LGBT/Queer community is not pissed off about this.” He said the sport’s organization’s exclusionary policy was “founded on antiquated

views of sexuality.” And, he added, it is “incredibly offensive.” Olsen noted that the term “non-gays” includes not only heterosexuals, but many others. “Bisexuals, pansexuals, those who are questioning” – all are excluded from the NAGAAA’s definition of gay softball. “So much of the (LGBT) community’s struggle has been to distance society from the need to label people based on their sexuality, or to live in these strict binaries of male/female, man/woman, gay/straight,” Olsen said. “For this reason alone, the policy needs to be removed.” But there is another reason, he said, that the NAGAAA’s stance is “unfounded and shortsighted”: Straight men will not ruin “the culture of the league.” Homophobic men will not suddenly want to play gay softball, he said. Nor will super-athletic straight guys take over the sport. Those worries perpetuate the stereotype that straight men are better athletes than their gay counterparts. The NAGAAA defended its policy by saying it was created as a response to “sports environments that were hostile and dangerous for people perceived as gay,” wrote Roger

Bigham in the Bay Area Reporter Online. However, Bigham claimed, many other gay sports groups – for runners, basketball players, wrestlers, swimmers, rugby players and more– formed for the same reason. They have “thrived quite nicely without similar discriminatory language.” Why would the NAGAAA institute such a rule? Bigham asked. He answered: “Fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of those who are different. Fear of openness. Fear of being free of labels and stereotypes to hide behind.” That bears an uncanny, uncomfortable resemblance to the same macho, heterosexist culture that kept gay men out of sports for so many years. “Sounds a lot like the homophobia (gay sports) is supposed to be fighting,” Bigham wrote. “So unnecessary, so locked into the past rather than reaching for the future.” The NAGAAA case is complex. As in any lawsuit, side arguments were raised, precedents cited. One of those mentioned by Judge Coughenour was the Boy Scouts of America. He likened the softball organization to that national youth group. And he noted that

several years ago the United States Supreme Court decided (5-4) that the Boy Scouts have a right to exclude gay members. In Boy Scouts v. Dale, Olsen said, the majority “concluded that BSA had an official view opposing homosexuality and that its freedom to express that view was significantly affected by forced inclusion of gay members.” We – the LGBT community – can’t have it both ways.We can’t argue that our exclusion from the straight sports world – whether malicious or unintended – is wrong, yet then turn around and exclude “non-gay” people (whatever that means) from our gay sports world. We can’t invite straight allies to support our cause, welcome them onto our teams and into our leagues as validation of who we are, yet then enact a rule that says only a certain number of them are actually welcome. And we can’t bring litigation against institutions in one part of society, charging that they have treated us badly and asking the courts to remedy that situation, while at the same time creating institutions in another part of society that do exactly the same thing. “Gay softball” has a nice ring to it. It’s fun to play and to watch. But as Neil Patrick Harris sang at last month’s Tony Awards, it – like Broadway – “is not just for gays anymore.” Dan Woog is a journalist, educator, soccer coach, gay activist, and author of the “Jocks” series of books on gay male athletes. Sipping Man cannot live on wine & cocktails alone, although…wouldn’t that be grand? Sometimes I do water. Sometimes I do herbal tea, with honey mixed into the hot tea water, chilled overnight. I never do soda however, unless it’s clear & mixed with vodka.Yet – occasionally I want something light, crisp, refreshing, and bubbly in the middle of our hot, humid afternoons. To what do I turn to then? San Pellegrino aranciata, orange & limonata, lemon “sodas.” I use quotes because they are flavored with real fruit juice & they use actual, real sugar to bring out the sweetness of the fruit. The fact these refreshing beverages come in beautiful cans, with a lovely foil label on the lid make them an elegant can to place on your desk. Look for & find them almost everywhere cold beverages are sold. You don’t have to feel guilty either, as the lemon has 150 calories and the orange 140 calories. Also, unlike soda, you won’t feel thirsty for water afterwards. Find “sunshine in a bottle” at AranciataSanPellegrino.com as well as recipes & great vintage Italian posters.

Reading Miss Timmins’ School for Girls, A Novel, by Nayana Currimbhoy, HarperCollins.com Normally I do not go for books identified as murder mysteries because there are few writers who can convincingly create such a narrative. The novel concerns a young school teacher, Charulata Apte who is sent to teach at an exclusive all girls boarding school in a distant outpost of what was once the British Empire. Initially young Miss Apte thinks she will simply be teaching Shakespeare to young, wealthy Indian schoolgirls. However, despite the Victorian management & climate at the school the world is changing. Not only does Miss Apte meet hippies, indulge in hash, & discover rock n’roll in the strange universe of the school but she finds herself drawn to fellow teacher Moira Prince.Their friendship ceases to be merely platonic, further change for the young, well-raised Indian teacher. One evening, during monsoon season, further change comes for the previously sheltered Miss Apte & she finds herself a suspect in the murder of her beloved Moira Prince. It is the schoolgirls who ultimately play the part of detectives. In addition to the murder the relationship of Miss Prince with a certain woman at the school offers another unexpected plot. The writing, according to one reviewer, is “atmospheric” & the word perfectly describes the carefully executed prose, which transports you to India.

Top Shelf Telegrams Waiting The groundbreaking U.K. drama, which captivated audiences around the globe for celebrating gay culture with intelligence, wit, & humor arrives to DVD from Acorn Media on Sept. 27, with the release of Queer As Folk:The Complete Collection. Audiences can once more enjoy the antics of Stuart Allen Jones, an unrepentant rake, as he wreaks havoc in Manchester’s gay scene. He is of course accompanied by his bestfriend Vince who has a crush on him and a 15-year-old lad who has super confidence which might put today’s twinks to shame. True, the landmark British program was cancelled after only one season while Showtime’s version dragged on – I mean went on, that’s it – went on for five years. However, there is something still fresh about the British version after nearly 12 years. Perhaps because their “programmes” have limited, smaller batches, in terms of their seasons or “series” as they call them. Behind-the-scenes, interviews with cast members & a featurette – that’s a short film here in the States, make this a great collection to have whether a fan of the American version, love British television or…just have a thing for the accents. You might want to pre-order on Amazon.com or other source.

Watching Of course you can be all 2001, pick out your movies, then wait for NetFlix via the post office to deliver the DVDs to your front door. This is 2011, whenever I watch a movie it’s streaming & it’s not always porn. That way I can even watch a film while I am at my desk…shh, don’t tell the publisher! HOWL, starring is-he-gay, isn’t-he-straight, could-he-be-bisexual James Franco was recently added to Gay & Lesbian Dramas on the NetFlix.com Watch Instantly list. The film chronicles the experiences that led the openly-gay late poet & prophet of the Beat Generation to write the poem HOWL, the subsequent obscenity trial brought against the poet. In terms of NetFlix…it seems as if they are getting better about adding LGBT-films we actually want to watch online. They even added the Miami-centric comedy The Birdcage to their streaming list. I hope it rains this weekend so I have an excuse to watch it!
