only one of whom has pled guilty. The allegations of the original indictment have been steadfastly denied by the Steiner, Steinger, and Livoti. Each have retained prominent lawyers, maintained their innocence, and dispute the prosecution’s claims, insisting that none of them committed any of the alleged wrongful acts, from fraud to money laundering. (Even though Steiner and Steinger are brothers they spell their names differently) Steven Steiner’s attorney, Richard Lubin, again told the Miami Herald last week that his client maintains his presumption and plea of innocence, and further, the “new indictment repeats the same money-laundering charges cited in the previous criminal case.” Lubin stated the new charges were “improper.” He will be asking for his client’s continued release on a new bond. The latest criminal case accuses Steiner and his partner of new acts following the original indictment, by plotting to funnel nearly $11 million of Mutual Benefits proceeds through a consulting business, using the money for their Northeastern homes and lying about the real value of their assets to the court-appointed receiver for Mutual Benefits. The indictment alleges that the couple submitted a series of false and misleading documents, orchestrating and designing a conspiratorial plan to conceal their true financial condition. By doing so, the US attorney says, they together interfered with the duties of a court appointed receiver to marshal together the assets of the original investment scheme, which were to be used to return money to alleged victims. Steiner’s attorney vigorously denied the latest claims. It’s a long way from 2004, when Larry Wald, the former owner of the now legendary Cathode Ray Bar on Las Olas Boulevard, commented about his work with Steiner on numerous fund-raising projects, “You can’t say enough about his energy, kindness, and efforts. He has a great management style and is a marvelous team leader and team player. And he is totally devoted to the cause.” However, that is not the way the US attorney sees it anymore.

Are LGBT Students Safer this Year? By Dana Rudolph Keen News Service

A

nti-LGBT bullying took the national stage last fall after the highly publicized suicides of several teens bullied for being gay or perceived to be. The relentless bullying, many believe, may have been one of the contributing factors in their decisions to attempt suicide, and their deaths led to an surge of anti-bullying awareness campaigns and media coverage. But will LGBT students entering school this fall be any safer after a year of heightened awareness about the issue? Two LGBT leaders are doubtful, although they acknowledge some positive changes. Eliza Byard, executive director of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), said, “Last fall, the nation as a whole woke up to the potential consequences of this problem.” This year, “more schools are aware of what they need to do, and there are more resources out there.” But while “we’ve made progress” in people’s understanding of anti-LGBT bullying and “ideas and policies are getting traction,” Byard said there is still “a lot of work to be done.” David McFarland, interim executive director/CEO of The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBT (and questioning) youth, said, “We’re not there yet because we’re continuing to see antiLGBT rhetoric and movement across this country that has a negative effect on young people. . . . There is greater awareness around this issue, but LGBT students still experience bullying and harassment at an alarming rate.” Research has shown the negative effects of bullying. GLSEN’s 2009 National School Climate Survey found that nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students experienced verbal or physical harassment at school in the previous year, which was related to increased depression and anxiety and decreased self-esteem. And a study in the May 2011 Journal of School Health found that antiLGBT bullying at school “is strongly linked” to negative mental health for its victims, including an increased frequency of suicide

Community Leaders Weigh In Victor Diaz-Herman, Executive Director of Pridelines Youth Services in Miami

Shari Kaplan, Founder of The Can’t Tell Foundation in Boca Raton

Clearly, bullying isn’t an issue that can be resolved in just one year. But the awareness generated in the wake of last year’s tragedies like the candlelight vigil on Lincoln Road has certainly moved us as a greater community toward better acceptance and tolerance of LGBTQ youth or those who are perceived to be. Organizations like Pridelines Youth Services and Safe Schools South Florida have amped up programs to address the bullying issue and are working to educate school leaders about the issue as well as letting teens know they have places to turn for support. It’s crucial, too, that adults constantly stay on guard and any time bullying is detected, they can call Pridelines, or Safe Schools or the Switchboard of Miami so we can intervene on behalf of the teen and get him or her the support he or she needs. A resource guide listing all LGBTQ youth service agencies in the community is available at www.pridelines.org.”

Awareness and education are significant steps in affecting change of any kind. They are, however, only the initial phases in the process of change. They are not effective interventions in and of themselves. Awareness and education as the initial phases to decreasing bullying in schools, coupled with many of the ‘no tolerance for bullying’ rules, may ultimately be effective in keeping the bullying out of the schools. However, that will not mean the bullying has stopped. There is plenty of time for bullying to occur before and after school hours. With cyber-bullying providing a multitude of vehicles to torment, harass and humiliate peers, there is nowhere for victims to seek solace from the bullying, not even in their own homes. According to the FBI statistics of violent crimes against LGBT people in the US, there was an increase of hate crimes from 1999-2009 from 1,317 to 5,110 people. Remembering that most of these crimes go unreported, this is a significant number. Approximately 150 LGBT students committed suicide in 2010. To tackle an epidemic of this magnitude, we must go to the core of the problem, where the cycle of bullying begins! We need the awareness and education programs as the initial phase of effecting change, then we need treatment for the bullies and the bullied! Bullies aren’t born bullies. More often than not, bullies have experienced their own sense of powerlessness somewhere in their lives, and are re-enacting their pain by causing harm to others. I have yet to meet a bully who has not been bullied or abused in some way. Bullying and abuse impact lives in psychological, emotional and neuro-biological ways. We need effective tools like the Can’t Tell Foundation Treatment Program (www.canttell.org), that can correct the damage that is caused to all three aspects of a person’s identity. Until we start providing adequate comprehensive treatment to those who have been traumatized by bullying and abuse, including their families, we are stuck addressing only the initial phases of change.”

Nicole Leidesdorf, COO of Compass in Lake Worth

If people working in youths’ lives are taking the media attention seriously and doing what is needed to care for students then there should be some improvement. We have the policies in place now we need to be sure they get implemented. That’s not so easy. There’s still a lot of resistance. I think the ‘It Gets Better’ campaign has had serious impact on the youth. I’ve seen Facebook messages going back and forth between teens where one complains that ‘it isn’t getting better,’ and another responds ‘Well, you’re talking about it and that’s better than before.’ The numbers and types of people making these videos is incredible. It has to be having an effect.”

attempts and increased risk for engaging in behaviors that can lead to infection with STDs and HIV. The increased risks exist not only while the victim is in adolescence, but also in young adulthood. Federal actions taken over the last year to address anti-LGBT bullying include, most prominently, an anti-bullying conference hosted by the While House in March 2011, at which President Obama told attendees that bullying is “more likely to affect kids that are seen as different,” including those who are different because of sexual orientation. The U.S. Department of Education has also issued a number of letters to educators, reminding them: • that federal laws require schools to take action against bullying including gender-based and sexual harassment of LGBT students. • that schools receiving federal funds must provide equal access to school resources for all student groups, including gay-straight alliances (GSAs), and that GSAs “can help make schools safe and affirming environments for everyone.” that effective state antibullying laws include ones that specify “actual or perceived characteristics of students who have historically been targets of bullying,” such as sexual orientation and gender identity. On the state level, since last fall, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, and Rhode Island enacted anti-bullying legislation that explicitly prohibits bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity, as recommended by the Department of Education, making a total of 14 states that do so. The others include California, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. An additional two, Massachusetts and Wisconsin, specify sexual orientation, but not gender identity. North Dakota and Texas enacted antibullying laws in the last year, but those laws do not enumerate sexual orientation and gender identity. And Byard said there has been “tremendous activity at district and local levels” across the country to address bullying. McFarland, too, stressed the importance of local action. “Schools and communities need to take concrete steps, creating safe spaces where youth can receive support from caring adults,” he said. Both the Trevor Project and GLSEN are

among the organizations that provide training to help them do so. Byard said, however, that, “The biggest problem we have right now is that schools are in crisis because of the economy. We’ve got to make sure schools that want to do the right thing are not prevented because of a lack of resources.” It may be tough going. The federal Fiscal Year 2011 budget drained more than $100 million from the two primary federal grant programs that address bullying. And state education budgets continue to face cuts. McFarland noted that, in some districts, the problem may be attitudinal as well as budgetary, especially in states and school districts with “no promo homo” laws or policies preventing school-based instruction that could be interpreted to be positive about homosexuality. Eight states Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah have such laws statewide, according to GLSEN. But individual school districts in other states may have similar policies, as does the Anoka-Hennepin School District in Minnesota, part of which is in the congressional district of presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.). The National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Southern Poverty Law Center recently filed a lawsuit against the district, claiming the policies “exacerbated” anti-gay harassment. This caused some students “serious emotional harm, including anxiety, anger, and depression, which led some of them to consider or attempt suicide.” In the nine months between November 2009 and July 2010, at least four LGBT students within the District died by suicide. Federal anti-bullying legislation “would make an enormous difference,” said Byard. Three pairs of bills in the U.S. House and Senate would address anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools and universities but seem unlikely to pass the current Republican-controlled House, despite having a handful of Republican co-sponsors. Still, Byard and McFarland feel the efforts over the past year have had some positive effect. “After last year, more doors are open,” Byard said. “People know this needs to be done.” McFarland added, “For the first time, the challenges of LGBT youth are no longer invisible on a local, state, or national level.”

Florida Teacher in Hot Water for Facebook Comments

F

ormer “teacher of the year” Jerry Buell of Mount Dora High School in Lake County, Florida was suspended for three days of the new school year, pending an investigation of some anti-gay marriage Facebook comments he posted. Since then though he’s been reinstated. As long as we have bigoted teachers in Florida like Jerry Buell with an agenda to preach against gay marriage to our younger generations we will continue to move Florida in the wrong direction. However, like it or not, Jerry Buell, the 2010 Census Report indicates that thinkers like that are becoming extinct and Florida is showing progress. Perhaps instead of teaching he should go back to doing his homework before posting such ignorance on his web site. Buell’s Facebook page has since been taken down but Florida News 13 reported that a status update said: “I’m watching the news, eating dinner, when the story about the New

sible but a support page has been launched for Buell. It’s been flooded with comments supporting his Freedom of Speech. One comment reads, “His personal faith and beliefs posted on his facebook should have no bearing on his job. I applaud him for his personal beliefs!!” Freedom of Speech only means you can’t be arrested, or harassed by the government for what you say. It shouldn’t protect him if he violates the school’s employee code of conduct. As a teacher, he’s allowed to have

York okaying same sex unions came on and I almost threw up. And now they showed two guys kissing after their announcement. If they want to call it a union, go ahead. But don’t insult a man and woman’s Mount Dora High School marriage by throwing it in the same cesspool of whatever. God will not be mocked. When did this sin become acceptable?” In an interview with the Orlando Sentinel, Buell said the comment was not made “out of hatred,” rather, “It was about the way I interpret things.” The truth is his posts are not just his “thoughts” anymore when he posts them on a public Facebook page where he has befriended former students and possible current students. It’s outrageous and about as bigoted and not private as he can get. Plus name calling is not an opinion. It’s not like he articulated reasons, he just called it a “cesspool.” His private Facebook page is not acces-

opinions. However when he expresses one that has the potential to create a hostile or otherwise uncomfortable learning environment, he should be relieved from his duties. Would it be ok if he had said, “interracial marriage is a cesspool that makes me want to vomit?” Of course not. This controversy comes just as figures

from the 2010 census report showed the number of same-sex households in Florida grew 60 percent since 2000. Lake County saw its gay couples nearly double during the past decade to 895. Nationwide, conservative states, such as Florida, have had the highest increases in same-sex couples, said Gary Gates of the Williams Institute, a think tank associated with the UCLA Law School. In Florida, that reflects both an increase in gays moving from more progressive states, and a growing willingness among gays to be counted. According to Brian Winfield, spokesman for Equality Florida, a gay civil-rights organization, the census numbers reflected an improved climate for gay people in Florida. “There are more then 12 Florida cities or counties that offer domestic-partner protection, and that means 6.7 million people or about one in three Floridians live in communities that recognize domestic partners. I am a female transsexual and pride myself in being an advocate for LGBT rights. I stand up for equality. Gay marriage is a topic that I will fight for until it’s recognized in Florida. Gay men and women are not asking for special rights when it comes to marriage, they just want the same rights as their fellow citizens. What ever happened to “All Men Being Created Equal?”

Tim Hardaway changes his tune after making homophobic remarks in 2007

By Jason Parsley

“I

hate gay people,” Tim Hardaway, 44, once told a Miami radio show. He went on to admit, “I don’t like to be around gay people. I’m homophobic. It shouldn’t be in the world for that or in the United States for it. So yeah, I don’t like it.” But that was in 2007. Four years later he’s now come out in support of LGBT equality. “My family and friends came to me and were like, ‘What are you doing?’” he recently told ABC-7 in El Paso, TX, explaining his change of heart. “I talked to them and they made me understand that [homophobia] wasn’t right.” The former NBA all-star recently traveled to El Paso for a golf outing and to discuss LGBT equality. He also came out against the recall of several elected officials who voted to restore health benefits for gay and unmarried partners of city employees, despite a ballot initiative in November that abolished them. “It’s not right to not let the gays and lesbians have equal rights here,” Hardaway said. “If I know El Paso, like they came together when the 1966 team won a championship and Don Haskins started those five [black] guys, I know the city will grow and understand that gays and lesbians need equal rights.” Hardaway’s original homophobic statements were in response to former NBA player John Amaechi coming out of the closet. Here’s what else Hardaway had to say about the LGBT community in that February 14, 2007 interview. “First of all I wouldn’t want him on my

team. And second of all, if he was on my team, you know, I would really distance myself from him because, uh, I don’t think that is right. I don’t think that he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room, and it’s just a whole lot of other things and I wouldn’t even be a part of that.” Later that night, however, after the story went viral and caused an immediately backlash he apologized. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I shouldn’t have said I hate gay people or anything like that.” He continued to back peddle away from his original comments one day later in an official statement released by his agent. The damage to Hardaway’s reputation, however, was already done. The NBA responded to Hardaway’s comments by removing him from its All-Star Weekend activities that week and Hardaway’s employer, Trinity Sports, owner of the Anderson-based CBA Indiana Alley Cats, dismissed him from his position as Chief Basketball Operations Advisor. Hardaway also lost endorsements and had to remove his name from a car wash business he owned in Miami. “It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours,” NBA commissioner David Stern said at the time. Amaechi though had much stronger words for Hardaway: “Every comment he made is laden with hate. He has been a lightning rod for people to finally open the flood gates and decide that they can say some pretty awful stuff.” Other pro basketball players such as Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal quickly came out in support of LGBT players. “I feel sorry for Tim Hardaway,” Barkley said. “For any person to say something like that is ignorant and stupid. It’s like saying you hate blacks, or you hate whites or Jewish people. It might be OK to say you disagree with that lifestyle, but to say you hate a whole group of people is just plain ignorant.” While O’Neal said “I was always taught as a youngster to never judge people, so I never judge people and to each their own. If

[a gay person] was my teammate and people ridiculed him and jumped on him, I would probably have to protect him.” Later that year in a September 2007 interview, Hardaway apologized again for his February comments. “I had no idea how much I hurt people. A lot of people,” he said. “[This has been] the biggest bump [in the road] in my life. I’m going to do whatever I can to correct it. That’s all I can do.” Several years later in February of 2010, Hardaway spoke about his work with The Trevor Project and The YES Institute, where he educated himself on LGBT issues.

In 2007 founding director of the YES Institute in Miami, Martha Fugate, told the Palm Beach Post she found Hardaway “a very authentic person” and explained that it could have been his spontaneity that “got him in trouble. My experience with Tim is there’s nothing hateful about the guy.” John Amaechi is hopeful that Hardaway’s latest outreach to the community is sincere. “It seems to me that this is a far more genuine piece of outreach,” Amaechi said. “I hope this is a story of true redemption rather than a savvy P.R. ploy … [but] either way, he is at least saying the right words, and that will make a positive difference.”

SFGN BRIEFS By Associated Press

Fans defend O’Donnell at book signing Supporters of former Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell say she was right to walk out on Piers Morgan during a recent interview on CNN. O’Donnell was at the Barnes & Noble at Concord Mall in Wilmington, DE recently to sign copies of her new book, “Troublemaker.” The conservative Republican, who lost last year’s Senate race to Chris Coons, wrote personal messages for about 80 people and signed 50 more copies for the store to sell, according to The News Journal of Wilmington. O’Donnell walked out of Morgan’s studio on Wednesday after he asked questions about her views on gay marriage and whether she still thinks masturbation is wrong. Don Criscuolo of Wilmington says Morgan wouldn’t have asked such questions of a male politician and that O’Donnell was right to walk out.

GOP Senate debate focuses on social issues The major Republican Senate candidates are largely in agreement on social issues like abortion, gay marriage, stem cell research and gambling. The candidates recently participated in a debate organized by a tea party group and the Florida Family Policy Council, the group that led the drive to put a gay marriage ban in the state constitution. Former Sen. George LeMieux, former state Rep. Adam Hasner, retired Army Col. Mike McCalister and former restaurant chain CEO Craig Miller were largely in agreement. All said they oppose abortion, embryonic stem cell research and laws that would give gays and lesbians protections against hate crimes and discrimination.

Former Senator George LeMieux: no protection against hate crimes

All said marriage should be between a man and woman, but McCalister said defining marriage should be left up to the states, not the federal government.

Alex Genter complained to the manager and told the Philadelphia Daily News: “She said she wouldn’t work with me because I’m gay. She also said that I came from a nice Jewish family, and that it was a shame I was gay. She said, ‘There’s right, and there’s wrong. And this is wrong.’” Now people from all over are coming to Genter’s defense by giving bad reviews of the company on Yelp.com. The shop now has a 1 and a half star rating. In response Yelp already deleted 1,000 negative reviews and released a statement saying they do not support discrimination, but reviews are suppose to be about customer experience, not the views of a business or employees. A Facebook page “Boycott Here Comes the Bride Salon” has also been created. Across the pond in England a pre-teen drag queen is quickly becoming a local sensation. The 12-year-old boy, Redvers Stokes from Sticker, England, goes by the name “Naughty Nora” and recently won a drag contest. “I think it’s really funny,” the boy told The Sun. “And my friends think it’s really cool. I’ve always been open to new things. I might like dressing up in women’s clothes but I still like girls. It’s just a little hobby of mine.” Speaking of English guys with a flair George Michael finally admitted that he and his longtime partner Kenny Goss split – two and a half years ago. “It’s time to be honest,” he told the audience while on tour. Michael though denied the split as recently as March. In other international news it looks like Uganda’s “kill the gays” is floating somewhere in purgatory. The cabinet insists the bill is dead, but MP David Bahati insists the bill is alive and well and it’s up to the parliament to decide what to do with it. And speaking of the “kill the gays” bill it appears one of it’s backers has ties to none other than presidential hopeful and “pray the gay away” Michele Bachmann. Bachmann’s campaign aide Peter Waldron apparently was arrested for terrorism in Uganda in 2006 and boasted about his friendship to Pastor Martin Ssempa, a strong advocate of the “kill the gays,” bill. Speaking of presidential candidates presidential hopeful Gov. Rick Perry is being accused of hypocrisy after it was revealed he once invested in Movie Gallery, at the time the country’s largest distributor of porn. In 1995 while Perry served as Texas’ agriculture commissioner he bought between 5,000 and 10,000 worth of the since-failed company’s stock. One of those porn movies the company distributed included Bisexual Barebacking Vol. 1.

Navy Captain Regrets Raunchy Videos By Brock Vergakis Associated Press

N

ORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The former commander of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier fighting to stay in the Navy said last week he wishes he never made a series of raunchy videos that he broadcast aboard the USS Enterprise. “I wish I had been smarter,” Capt. Owen P. Honors told a Navy board of inquiry. Among other things, the videos included simulated same-sex shower scenes, anti-gay slurs and references to prostitution in foreign ports. The videos frequently starred Honors and they were made when he was the ship’s executive officer the second in command between October 2005 and December 2007. They were shown to crewmembers on closed circuit television each Saturday night before a feature length film that Honors had selected. Honors was hastily fired from his job as the ship’s top officer in January after media reports about the videos surfaced. Honors is one of a series of Navy commanding officers to be relieved from duty this year, but his case has drawn by far the most attention. Clips of several of the videos were shown on national television, providing an embarrassing piece of publicity for Navy officials trying hard to improve the service’s image. A Navy investigation found Honors produced at least 25 videos containing inappropriate scenes. Honors said had he known the public furor the videos would have created years after they were produced, he never would have made them. He said the videos were never intended to be viewed off the ship and he believes a sailor he had punished was responsible for leaking them to the media. “It was pure and simple revenge,” he said. He says the videos were intended to be humorous, boost morale and teach important shipboard lessons, such as water conservation. He dismissed the notion that some videos undermined the hard work he and the ship’s leadership had undertaken to impart important lessons, such as getting vaccinated and avoiding prostitutes. He said

Captain Owen P. Honors

the videos provided comic relief during a difficult deployment on the service’s oldest aircraft carrier, which paid dividends. “The crew was fired up and they really enjoyed being there,” he said. The videos included simulated masturbation, drinking urine and rectal exams, and by all accounts they were wildly popular with the crew. Honors acknowledged some of the videos may have crossed the line, but he said he also spiked others that he felt went too far. Navy lawyers who are effectively acting as prosecutors said that just because the videos were popular, it doesn’t mean they were appropriate. While Honors said he thought the videos were appropriate given the time frame they aired, government lawyers said they showed a persistent lack of judgment that violated Navy standards. “At some point the unthinkable became acceptable,” Cmdr. Michael Luken said. Among other things, the board of inquiry is tasked with deciding whether Honors committed conduct unbecoming a naval officer and whether he failed to demonstrate acceptable qualities of leadership for an officer of his grade. Several witnesses testified for hours on Tuesday that Honors provided exemplary leadership while aboard the Enterprise and in every other assignment he had. One of Honors’ former commanding officers aboard the Enterprise, Rear Adm. Lawrence Rice, told the board that Honors was the best executive officer he ever had. The three rear admirals who comprise the board of inquiry are expected to hear closing arguments in Honors’ case on Wednesday. They will then deliberate as to whether to recommend to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus whether Honors should be allowed to continue to serve in the Navy, and if not, the pay grade at which he should retire. *Editor’s note: The Navy panel ruled that Capt. Owen P. Honors will be allowed to stay in the Navy, but his future role is unclear.

Colorado Couple Gets More Time in Deportation Case By Associated Press

ew immigration guidelines from the Homeland Security Department helped a lesbian couple get more time to fight a deportation case in Colorado, their attorney said recently. Attorney Lavi Soloway said Denver immigration Judge Mimi Tsankov told the court that lawyers from both sides of the case should take additional time to review the case in light of an announcement by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Thursday that illegal immigrants without a criminal record could be allowed to stay in the country if they face deportation. Jesse’s Journal

Bronski’s American History By Jesse Monteagudo A Queer History of the United States by Michael Bronski; Beacon Press; 288 pages; $27.95.

I

n 1984 Michael Bronski published Culture Clash: The Making of Gay Sensibility. Since then, Bronski has maintained his standing as a major chronicler and critic of LGBT life and culture. For two decades, Bronski wrote book and movie reviews for the late, great, gay monthly The Guide where I was also a contributor. His 2003 book Pulp Friction: Uncovering the Golden Age of Gay Male Pulps won a Lambda Literary Award. When not writing books, Bronski is senior lecturer in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program and Jewish Studies Program at Dartmouth College. A Queer History of the United States is Bronski’s most ambitious book, a narrative history of LGBT people in America from 1492 to 1990. As Bronski recalls, “two years ago Beacon Press decided to start a series titled Revision America which would be a multi-volume look at American history from alternative, and minority, points of view. While I am not an academically trained historian, they asked me to write the LGBT history. I was a little daunted at first, but finally decided that this was a challenge I could meet and one that would really let me pull together so much of my knowledge, ideas, theories, and analysis into one text.” Bronski’s book goes beyond the “great gays in history” model of so much LGBT history. Instead, Bronski proposed “two crucial concepts to consider when examining LGBT history in the United States. The first is that the contributions of people, which we may now identify as [LGBT] are integral and central to how we conceptualize our national history. The second key concept is

that LGBT history does not exist.” How does Bronski reconcile those two “counterintuitive” concepts? “Of course there have always been ‘queer people,’” he notes. “But these groups existed in so many different contexts that to group them all in a big tent with the name ‘LGBT history’ seemed misguided. On the other hand, they are there and their lives, adventures, thoughts, hardships, and triumphs have to be acknowledged as distinctly their and distinctly American.” Bronski refers to historian R. I. Monroe’s concept of the “persecuting society” in which “minorities were stigmatized and persecuted as groups and often physically separated from society. In that view, the founding of modern society was predicated on the creation of minority groups whose only purpose was to be vilified as unclean and persecuted for the illusion of societal safety.” “many of the most important changes for LGBT people in the past five hundred years have been a result of war.”

– Michael Bronski How did that apply to LGBT people in the USA? As Bronski puts it, though “’LGBT people’ did not exist in the 17 th, 18th or 19th century, there were plenty of people who existed who loved members of their own sex, desired them sexually, and frequently had sex with them. While they were not called ‘gay’ or ‘lesbian’ they were often labeled by their behaviors.” “It is important to remember that the

Michael Bronski

Puritans saw very little difference (as we do now) between sins and crimes. When people were cast out for being unclean (and they were for any number of reasons) it was, as in the Medieval period Moore write about, to secure the safety of the entire society. But it is instructive to remember that the categories of sexual identity (or what we now call sexual orientation) did not exist in the ways that they do now.” One of the most interesting sections in Bronski’s History deals with Merrymount, a dissident community established in 17th century Massachusetts “that allowed greater sexual freedom, racial equality, and economic justice.” Unfortunately, Merrymount “was crushed by Governor Bradford because these freedoms were a threat to the very structure of the Puritan community.” Bronski writes that “many of the most important changes for LGBT people in the past five hundred years have been a result of war.” He adds “that the main way war effects ‘queer people’ is in its direct effect on gender. Certainly after the American Revolution, gender roles in the colonies changed radically. We had to invent a ‘new’ American man who was the anthesis of the British man. The Civil War, in which 620,000 men (many of them under 21) lost their lives was also a turning point in defining what

it means to be a man. I would also argue that the Vietnam War changed the lives of LGBT people in conjunction with the youth counter culture, feminism and Black Power movements.” Though Bronski ends his history in 1990, he includes an Epilogue that deals with the issues of same-sex marriage and assimilation in the LGBT community. In this he was criticized by Slate’s Johann Hari and other critics. Actually, as Bronski reminds us, “I write very little about same-sex marriage in the book and essentially say that some of the marriage arguments are about regulating sexuality, not unlike the 19th century social purity movements. There is nothing new or radical about this. I am not against same-sex marriage as a question of equality under the law, although I do see the push for marriage in tension with the other great push in the LGBT movement, which is for personal freedom and independence. What I found most curious about this flap about my marriage opinions is that, for some people, uncritically supporting same-sex marriage has become the litmus test for being pro-gay. If you have any critiques of samesex marriage (or marriage itself) then you are homophobic or a crazy radical. This is not good for community discussion or the free exchange of ideas.”

Hollywood Prime Westin Diplomat Intimate elegance, prime cuts

By A. Sebastian Fortino

N

ormally a steakhouse does not conjure up images of a romantic dinner. However, the 15 tables of Hollywood Prime at the Westin Diplomat allowed for an intimate, quiet meal. From the time we were seated we realized we were in for not a mere steak dinner but a culinary experience. Of course that was a given as this is the only four diamond steakhouse in the area. Hollywood Prime has an outstanding wine list.Yet, as I very seldom eat red meat I prefer to imbibe something which will not compete with the flavor of beef. Instead, we ordered dry Beefeater martinis. They were exactly that – perfectly dry with only a hint of vermouth to open up the flavor of the gin. With the cocktails we were treated to an excellent amuse bouche of foie gras, as we studied the menu. For our first course my guest ordered lobster bisque, with a touch of morel cream. This portion could have easily been a main course – not merely an appetizer. The soup was creamy, rich, but the lobster was not overshadowed by the morel cream indicating the lobster used is fresh – not frozen. To start I chose the seared Hudson Valley foie gras. While the amuse bouche was pate of foie gras this is an actual piece of the liver served with caramelized pears and champagne vinaigrette port wine reduction. Searing brings out nuances of foie gras, allowing a light crust to develop on the outside while within the texture is

creamy and slightly dense. The sweetness of the pears rounded out the earthy flavors of the liver. For our next course the menu boasted lamb, lobster and duck but aged beef is the main attraction of Hollywood Prime. These prime cuts are aged for 21 days – which adds extra depth to the flavor of the beef. I chose the 18 oz. prime ribeye. Normally I prefer everything classic and clean. You’ll never see me ordering lemon drop martinis or raspberry mojitos. However, our attentive server Robert insisted I order it with Cajun spices. “It adds just a touch of heat, without overwhelming the meat,” he assured me. He was correct, the Cajun spices did not distract from the aged beef. I ordered mine rare, and the chef let it rest for an appropriate amount of time before serving. So the juices did not flood out when I introduced my knife, which makes a steak dry.

My guest ordered the 28 oz. prime porterhouse. He was equally as pleased with the juicy, tender meat. He would’ve eaten the whole thing had it not been for the excellent side dishes. At first we only selected the jumbo green and white asparagus with hollandaise sauce, but our waiter insisted we try the hash browns. These hash browns were made from Yukon gold potatoes, their crustiness elevated through smoky notes of truffle oil. After all of this there was “still enough room” for desert. Crème brûlée is a classic dish, breaking the crust of caramelized sugar is almost sensual. In this version the breaking of the crust to find the creamy custard beneath was surpassed by the flavor of Tahitian vanilla bean. The warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream my guest ordered was an outstanding version of this steakhouse standard. Everything at Hollywood Prime is elevated, even the coffee. We were presented with a menu of specialty coffees. Of the seven varieties we chose the Costa Rica Tarrazu. It has a round, satisfying finish, as the menu promised, served elegantly in a French press coffee pot. After our wonderful meal, each of us with leftover steak for the next day’s lunch, we took a satisfying walk on the beach. Hollywood Prime is a culinary experience, with all the trappings of a great American steakhouse.Yet, intimate enough for a date. The show called upon Lost Creek Ranch’s customers to play extras, as they wanted the scene to appear like an actual guest ranch. “It’s the best we can do for inconveniencing them on their vacation,’’ Jeff Morton, an executive producer, said, “let people experience a little behind-the-scenes.’’ The ranch’s workers also got in on the action and were used as extras to bolster some of the shots. “I was so excited, freaking-out-so-excited,’’ said Laura Beth Rider, of Lexington, Ky., who is working as a server at Lost Creek this summer. “I really couldn’t believe they were coming here.’’ She called herself a ``huge fan’’ of the show, and said being an extra will be a good experience. “It’s so cool to see how a TV show is put together,’’ Rider said. The cast and crew were shooting several different scenes around Lost Creek Ranch last week, including some inside the lodges and cabins and finished with an outdoor barbecue scene Friday night. On Saturday, the show filmed on and around a plane on the airport runway. For the complete article, go to: sfgn.com/modernfamily

One (Gay) Day with Anne Hathaway By Chris Azzopardi

G

Actress talks gay ‘pod,’ Catwoman role and N.Y. marriage stories

ays adore Anne Hathaway for more than her sweetheart sensibility and frumpy-to-fashionable underdog role in The Devil Wears Prada. She’s practically an honorary member of the community, contributing to the “It Gets Better” project, receiving an award from the Human Rights Campaign and quitting Catholicism for her gay brother. And then consider the super gay trajectory of her career: Brokeback Mountain and, as reported, an upcoming role as Judy Garland in the gay icon’s biopic and a stint on Glee, as Kurt’s lesbian aunt. Hathaway is cast as Emma Morley in her latest movie, the lovely screen adaptation of David Nicholls’ bestselling novel One Day, which chronicles her relationship with Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess of Across the Universe) on the same day every year for two decades. The day after the premiere in New York City, the actress cheerfully breezes into a suite at the Waldorf Astoria, appearing so tiny you could put her in your pocket. And lesbians everywhere just might want to after seeing her sexily vacuum-sealed in a vinyl cat suit for The Dark Knight Rises, which she’s currently filming. When Hathaway sits down, she’s her usual bubbly self, discussing the most significant day in her life, her upcoming role as Catwoman (as much as she can, anyway) and the enduring power of love for all people. CA: Even though this is a story about a straight couple, how do you think it can resonate with a gay audience? AH: Love is universal. Anybody who has a heart can relate to what it is to have it broken again and again and again, and like I said, that’s universal – gay, straight, questioning, whatever you are. CA: Do you know a gay couple that has that type of enduring relationship like Emma and Dexter? AH: Oh my god, yes – I went to Vassar! I have like a pod now, and we’ve all been in each other’s lives for 10 years – and they don’t admit it, but I have gay friends that I think are secretly in love with each other. CA: And now, gay relationships are finally recognized in this state. AH: Yes, yes! Round of applause for New York! I was so happy. I couldn’t believe it. All the pictures of the couples who have been together for so many years – some people for over 60 years, like those two

ladies that got married first – adorable! And that wonderful couple who had a profile done on them – one gentleman is in his 80s and the other is in his 70s and they’ve been together for over 65 years or something like that and they met at Juilliard – it’s just beautiful. Long overdue but so welcome. Now the rest of America, get on it! Enough with your nonsense and foolishness. CA: What can people take away from One Day? AH: It’s up there with the classic love stories. It requires you to open your heart and feel, and a lot of movies don’t mind if you feel. I personally think there are few things more satisfying in life than crying in a dark room with strangers. That sounds a little funny, but go to see One Day at 4 o’ clock on a Wednesday and you’ll know what I’m talking about. CA: Emma’s arc follows her through many years, from college to potential motherhood.

August 31, 2011 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com

What about her did you cling to throughout all those years? AH: The book! I clung to the book – tightly. (Laughs) The thing that I clung to about Emma was that she’s a survivor. She is somebody who gets up when you knock her down, she is somebody who wants to grow, she’s somebody who wants to be her best self, she’s somebody who, contrary to what she might profess, believes that things are going to turn out OK. CA: How did you bring Emma to life? AH: The accent was key. It informs so much about Emma and Dexter’s relationship that we don’t necessarily talk about in the movie. To understand her education, one of the things I did was I tried to read as many books that David mentions by name in the novel – but I’m a really, really good reader and they were a little arduous. (Laughs) I much preferred Dexter’s (reading material), like The Face magazine. And then I just went to England as early as I could and went up to every single person that I could meet from Yorkshire and asked them as many questions as I could. CA: Were you familiar with the book before you got the part? AH: I was sent the script first and then, as soon as I read the script, I was deeply in love with it, and then I read the book and I fell even more deeply in love with the whole idea. CA: Do you think if Emma and Dexter had hooked up in the early days their relationship would have lasted as long? AH: No, not at all. Definitely not. It’s one of the bittersweet parts of the story – they couldn’t have gotten together a day before they do.

CA: Emma and Dexter change from year to year, but there’s still something about them that stays the same. What about you do you see changing most from year to year? And what is something that always stays the same? AH: I’m happier. I get happier every year. I find that as I get older, I take in life more and I think that’s making me a better person. As I get older I, funny enough, become more trusting, but I trust fewer people. The people that I do trust, it’s gone much deeper. What stays the same? I’m a really curious person. I believe that imagination is not something you grow out of, and I find that stays the same. Oh, and I love books! CA: How quickly did you and Jim click? AH: It’s very hard not to get along with Jim. If you don’t get along with Jim, there’s something seriously wrong with you. We have a lot of friends in common, and you know when there are those people that when their name is mentioned everything stops, people grab you by the shoulder, they peer deep, deep, deep into your eyes and they think they’re talking to your soul but really they’re just looking kind of bugged out and they just shake you a little bit and describe their love for this person? That happened to me when I told people I was working with Jim, so I knew I was going to be meeting someone pretty awesome. And he did not disappoint. Now I’m one of those “bugged out, I’m gonna take you and tell you to like Jim Sturgess!” people.

Sebastian’s Picks for the week. By A. Sebastian Fortino

Crossword Puzzle

Top Shelf Telegrams Watching ¿Qué Pasa, USA? – I could say I’m trying to learn Spanish! However…someone especial wants me to learn Spanish. He introduced me to this series, originally aired from 1977 through 1980, & filmed at Miami’s WPBT2. Despite the Miami-centric theme the Peña family was broadcast nationally on PBS affiliates. It was the first sitcom produced by PBS.Yes, this was back in the day when educating the public was considered a “good thing,” & broadening cultural horizons was “American.” Don’t tell the Tea Party movement! It was also the first bilingual sitcom produced in the U.S. This vintage show is a touching depiction of Cuban émigré culture in 1970s America. There is even a gay episode…yes, in the 1970s. The whole Peña family, parents & even grandparents, all go to a gay bar to figure out if son Joe is gay. It turns out he’s not & despite Anita Bryant’s anti-gay campaign in Miami his mother vows to still love him were he gay. The suggestion of a gay uncle back in Cuba who lived with another man is very telling of the cosmopolitan pre-Castro regime. PBS has made this available as a boxed DVD set, at QuePasaUSA.org for the Cuban-American or Miamian in your life. Proceeds support WPBT2 & Florida’s diverse history.

Styling Stripes – There’s one shirt you can wear to the office, dress up with a blazer, dandy up with a pocket square for a date later in the evening, or make it super casual by pairing with jeans. Don with shorts over the weekend, add a pair of flip-flops, boat shows, or low-rise canvas sneakers, & suddenly you’re dressed for an impromptu party on a yacht. The shirt of which I speak is the very natty, very traditional Bengal Stripe. This blue & white striped shirt has been a staple in the wardrobes of gentlemen for years, from prep school through retirement. Despite the demise of the British Empire they did bring wonderful fabrics back to the Western World & this shirt is a fine example of eternal style. Always keep a light, summerweight one, which in South Florida will get the most use, but keep a heavier one for our…“winters.” In fact, the 1970s Christian Dior one I keep for winter, belonged to my late father. Best of all you can find this must-have shirt at many price points, from this classic Thomas Pink of London at $150 to $50 examples at Banana Republic.

Serving Salty & Sweet – For your Labor Day barbeque or party you’ll want cold appetizers to whet the appetites of your guests. Italians love the combination of salty & sweet. The pairing of prosciutto – the ham of Italy’s Parma region – with figs, pears, & apples is a common sight at Italian cafés depending on what fruit is in season. In fact, medieval diaries mention traveling with prosciutto & apples, so it’s long been a tradition in Italy. However, the most classic presentation is prosciutto e melone. If you’re a host who really hates to cook this recipe is for you as it calls for only two ingredients! For each honeydew or cantaloupe melon, remove seeds, slice into 8 wedges, & remove skin – take 8 pieces of Prosciutto di Parma – wrap 1 piece of prosciutto around melon wedge – chill – then presto serve! Make sure the prosciutto you purchase is from Parma & have it sliced very thin in terms of thickness. As prosciutto di parma is un troppo caro, a little expensive, you can offer this as an amuse bouche when guests walk in, serve with champagne, prosecco or chenin blanc because…pinot grigio is so 2001!

Imbibing 2007 Michael & David Windmill Estate Old Vines Zinfandel, Lodi, Calif. – Last Top Shelf’s beverage was not wine or spirits & I…apologize. So this week for all my oenophiles – that’s wine lover, ahem, I find wino offensive – I highly suggest Zinfandels. If the mention of Zinfandel conjures up images of chainsmoking divorcees & boxed wine do not fear! I’m talking about red, not white Zinfandel, which is a robust wine. The grapes are descended from Southern Italy’s Primitivo & have been grown in California since the mid-1800s. This wine is like biting into a fresh piece of fruit, a red wine perfect for our humid nights recalling black cherries, licorice & raspberries. As your choice of red for a Labor Day barbeque it will lend casual sophistication to your bar. Keep bottles on ice – as it will certainly grow warm. My favorite wine shop, The Best Cellar, located at 1408 NE 26th St., Wilton Manors, has many diverse, quaffable wines. On Wednesday through Saturday they host an informative, well-attended wine tasting, call 954-630-8020 for times & reservations. In addition to having wonderful wine the prices are quite friendly & dispel the myth of a good wine as being overpriced. Normally, Windmill retails for over $15. However, at Best Cellar, the $11.95 price allowed me to purchase a case…yes, on my salary!
