here is no doubt in my mind that Dan Choi is in the government’s crosshairs for extra-harsh treatment as a protester. I say “right on” to his defense attorneys who are trying to make this point. Shame on President Obama for allowing federal authorities to go forward with this latest attack on America’s constitutional right to peaceful protest. Our AfricanAmerican President should know better, considering all the pain and blood of AfricanAmerican protest - sit-ins, marches, being beaten and fire-hosed and even murdered a legacy of black protest that helped get him to the White House. After all, it’s right in the First Amendment about “the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” I call it the “latest attack” because Choi’s trial is riding a monster trend that began as far back as the ’80s and ’90s. This was when post-Reagan conservative legislators began quietly changing state and federal criminal code so they could ramp up the penalties for peaceful protest. Before that, civil disobedience used to be prosecuted as a minor misdemeanor, and veteran activists were proud of their long lists of arrests. But these changes in the law aimed to ensure that the Sixties era of massive protest – especially anti-war protest – would never be repeated. Conservative Democrats went along with Republicans on this. Today, peaceful protest is typically slammed as a serious misdemeanor or a felony charge – preferably a whole stack of charges, along with excessive bail. An activist’s life can be ruined by the first arrest. Make no mistake - protest is going away as an American tool for change. I’ve been writing about this deadly trend for years, and was often baffled by the LGBT public’s lack of interest in the issue. After all, we’ve got as big a stake as anybody in the

right to “peacefully assemble.” Yet most of us stood by silently while (for instance) the fiery ACT UP activism of the 1980s was gradually smothered by prosecutorial overkill. Now a gay man in uniform is standing in front of those legal bullets and will spend six months in federal prison if convicted. I’m glad to see that more and more LGBT people are finally waking up to this issue. The big point about Dan Choi’s trial is not that he’s gay or protesting DADT. It’s that he is a high-profile protester. So the government aims to make a high-profile example of him, in hopes of discouraging other types of high-profile protest. And that includes any high-profile protest over unemployment, home foreclosures, corporate corruption, GM foods, immigration, mis-use of anti-terrorist legislation against innocent American citizens, the Afghanistan and Iraq wars or any other issue that the government doesn’t want to hear about. The 12 activists who were arrested with Choi have taken another option. They pled guilty and will escape jail time if they are not arrested again in the next four months. This option, too, is part of law-enforcement strategy. Government wants to ensure your future absence from the protester arena in every way possible. Indeed, Americans’ capacity to ignore

Solmonese to Leave HRC His leadership is marked by big successes and some stinging defeats By Lisa Keen
T
he Human Rights Campaign announced in a press release Saturday, August 27, that its president, Joe Solmonese, “will not renew his contract,” which expires March 31, 2012. Rebecca Tillet, a co-chair of HRC’s Board of Directors, noted in the release that the board had asked Solmonese to give them six months notice before leaving his position, “and he’s done that.” Solmonese did not respond to this reporter’s request for interview but said, in the HRC press release, “Leading HRC has been an inspiring experience and a complete privilege.” “I could not be more proud of our staff, our volunteer leadership and of the extraordinary progress we’ve made together as a community,” said Solmonese. “HRC has never been stronger and after nearly seven years, this is the right moment for me to move on,” he said.

Joe Solmonese Solmonese took the helm of the nation’s largest LGBT political organization in 2005, following an 11-month stint by his predecessor, Massachusetts State Senator Cheryl Jacques. Jacques followed a nine-year tenure by Elizabeth Birch. Prior to Birch, the organization was lead by its founder, Steve Endean; its first Executive Director, Vic Basile;
and Basile’s successor, Tim McFeeley. Solmonese hinted he would be exploring “new professional possibilities” and would continue to be involved in such activities as fighting marriage bans and “ensuring President Obama is reelected for a second term.” That latter comment will almost certainly fuel speculation by some that Solmonese is bucking for a position with the Obama White House or re-election campaign. In HRC’s release, Anne Fay, a co-chair of the HRC Foundation Board of Directors, called Solmonese an “outstanding leader” and credited him with putting HRC in “the best place the organization has ever been.” “Not only has our community secured historic victories,” said Fay, “but our membership is larger and more active than at any time in our history, and our financial health is secure even in these difficult economic times.” The release also credited Solmonese with leading HRC at a time when the LGBT civil rights movement has seen many gains in-
cluding repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, passage of hate crimes legislation, and passage of a marriage equality law in New York. Critics, no doubt, will also point out that, with Solmonese at the helm of the largest and most influential LGBT political organization in the country, there has been little to no real movement on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, stinging ballot box losses on marriage equality in California and Maine, and no prospects for building significant Republican Party support for LGBT issues at a time when control of Congress is split between the two major parties. According to the release, HRC’s membership grew from 750,000 to “more than 1,000,000” under Solmonese, who took over the helm of the organization from then Executive Director Elizabeth Birch in 2005. The organization issued the press release a day after lesbian blogger Pam Spaulding (pamshouseblend.com) posted an entry saying that she had learned “from a trusted source in a position to know” that Solmonese would leave in December. The HRC release indicated the organization has formed a search committee to select a new president. The release does not indicate when Solmonese will leave. Rutgers case prosecutor: Protect man’s identity NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- Prosecutors say the identity of a man recorded on a webcam in an intimate encounter with Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi should remain a secret. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office filed a motion Monday asking a judge to issue an order ensuring that the man’s name isn’t revealed. He’s been identified only by the initials “M.B.” The Star-Ledger of Newark reports that the request came in response to a motion filed by lawyers for Clementi’s roommate, Dharun Ravi. Ravi is charged with bias intimidation and invasion of privacy in the case that’s been linked to Clementi’s death last September when he jumped off the George Washington Bridge. Ravi’s lawyers want to speak with M.B. They believe he has information that could help

Catholic Charities to appeal foster-care ruling over Illinois civil union’s law

By Jim Suhr ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Catholic Charities plans to appeal a judge’s decision allowing the state to stop working with the group on adoptions and foster-care placements, an attorney for the not-for-profit agency revealed Monday. Peter Breen said the group will ask for a stay of Sangamon County, Ill., Circuit Judge John Schmidt’s Aug. 18 ruling that sided with the state, which severed work with Catholic Charities

after the agency refused to recognize Illinois’ civil union law. Breen said the charity also will ask the judge to reconsider, then take the matter to a state appellate court if Schmidt declines.
Advertorial
Catholic Charities has argued that it developed a “property interest” in the work after 40 years of annually renewed contracts with the state, and that the agency should be able to object to state action. But in his ruling, Schmidt said no one, including Catholic Charities, has a legal right to a contract with state government. He did not address the more sensitive issue of whether a state contractor that refuses to serve gays and lesbians is violating the state’s new civil unions law. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services ended $30 million in contracts with Catholic Charities in four church dioceses in July, but Schmidt had temporarily reinstated them while he considered the case. Illinois authorities had said they were canceling the contracts because Catholic Charities’ practice of referring unmarried couples to other agencies was discriminatory, a violation of the state’s civil union law. Catholic Charities argued that it was exempt under a provision in the civil unions law that protects religious practices. Breen said Monday that Catholic Charities’ would seek the stay to give it time to appeal, believing “the financial impact on the charities of not receiving (such a reprieve) would be catastrophic.” Breen added that the not-for-profit agency’s “main thrust (on appeal) would be that you do not need to hold property in order to exercise religious rights.” Catholic Charities hopes Schmidt reconsiders his ruling, “particularly on the issue of religious freedom,” Breen said. Kendall Marlowe, a state Department of Children and Family Services spokesman, said the department had no immediate reaction to Catholic Charities’ plan to appeal. A spokeswoman for the Illinois attorney general’s office, which represented the DCFS, declined to comment Monday.

DA to Seek New Trial in California Gay Teen Killing in PhiLadELPhia Enjoy LifE, LibErty and thE Pursuit of haPPinEss
By Greg Risling Associated Press
L
OS ANGELES (AP) There was no question that Brandon McInerney, who had just turned 14, shot a gay classmate at their middle school, but finding the appropriate degree of punishment proved to be troublesome this week for a jury that was inundated with factors to consider. They heard testimony that McInerney was beaten by his father; was a budding white supremacist who doodled swastikas in his notebook; and a bright student who became unmotivated and couldn’t control his emotions when 15-year-old Larry King made unwanted sexual advances toward him. Most notably in the jury’s inability to reach a unanimous decision on a firstdegree murder charge sought by prosecutors was McInerney’s age at the time of the shooting in February 2008. One juror, who spoke with The Associated Press but declined to be identified, said he and several jurors felt McInerney shouldn’t have been tried as an adult. Some legal observers say while most people approve of stiff penalties for minors who commit violent crimes, they aren’t as inclined to support a lifelong prison sentence if they discover the child was abused or had other problems growing up. “I think it’s about what the just punishment is,’’ said Aaron Kupchik, a sociology professor at the University of Delaware, of the deadlocked jury. “They still look at someone who was barely 14 when he did this. Though he may deserve a harsh punishment, it would be senseless to treat this child if he was as fully blameworthy as an adult.’’ The case drew worldwide attention because of its shocking premise: McInerney, in a fit of homophobic rage, killed King in front of horrified classmates at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard because King stood up for himself and threw taunts back at one of his tormentors. Comic Ellen DeGeneres, who is a lesbian, weighed in on her talk show shortly after the shooting and said gays shouldn’t be treated as secondclass citizens. Jurors were apparently torn over how severe McInerney’s sentence should be. The nine-woman, three-man panel said they took a series of votes, the last one with seven in favor of voluntary manslaughter and
five jurors supporting either first-degree or second-degree murder. A first-degree murder conviction carries a maximum sentence of more than 50 years in prison, while voluntary manslaughter has a 21-year maximum prison term. To find McInerney guilty of voluntary manslaughter, jurors had to find him not guilty of firstand second-degree murder. Defense attorneys do not deny McInerney killed King, but lawyer Scott Wippert said jurors had told him they weren’t convinced by prosecutors’ assertions the killing was a hate crime. Prosecutors said Friday that they planned to ask Ventura County Superior Court Judge Charles Campbell for a new trial during a hearing scheduled for Oct. 5. Over the next month, prosecutors will decide whether to pursue the same set of charges or drop some of them, said James Ellison, the chief assistant district attorney. ``We don’t know at this point if we will modify the charges,’’ Ellison said. “The jury’s inability to reach a verdict in this case will be a factor. We’ll consider everything.’’ An option could be punting the case back to juvenile court if prosecutors are willing to drop the special allegation of lying in wait, which could carry a more severe penalty. If convicted in juvenile court of murder, McInerney would likely be released no later than his 25th birthday. He’s now 17. Prosecutors also could offer McInerney another plea deal. His attorneys have previously passed on an agreement that would have sent McInerney to prison for 25 years to life. Defense lawyer Robyn Bramson said they wouldn’t consider a plea deal that had an indeterminate sentence. “We want a date certain that he can look at a calendar and say, `On this date, I am going to get out,’’’ Bramson said. The district attorney’s office was criticized in a report last month released by the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice that showed cases involving youths under the age of 15 are nearly 14 times more likely to be tried in adult court than anywhere else in California. Ellison said his department was looking into the claims made in the report.

I
met George Ryan a few months ago. My partner and I were having an all to familiar argument- he couldn’t find a salon that wasn’t in Miami for premium color and cut. Enter George Ryan salon. Just off of 6th ave and Wilton Drive, the salon offers cut, color, and even some spa services. The atmosphere is eclectic and (thankfully) exclusive. Mr. Ryan is a statuesque figure, tall and symmetrical. As with most handsome, successful men, his story is colorized with the vibrant hues of romance. How did he happen upon Wilton Manors? “I was dating an opera singer at the time” he begins. He is articulate but masculine, sensitive but confident in his cadence. He expounds about countless visits to Wilton Manors, taking a veritable tour of our
gay guesthouses. Later on, as his relationship with the opera singer evolved into a friendship, his love affair with the Island City grew. Wilton Manors is unusual in that we rate 2nd in the nation when it comes to gay households, but our local economy is still in it’s fledgling state. We aren’t yet, for instance, West Hollywood, California. It almost feels as though we are San Francisco’s Castro district circa 1970: a gay ghetto. As we discussed, I asked George Ryan if he see’s Wilton Manors becoming a LGBT destination in the next 5 years. “I certainly hope so. The heart is here- the wonderful people. I send many of my customers to the candy store, To the Moon. I want to see this little gem shine. We as business owners have a lot to do.” He sounds committed and excited, the two things that provide hope in any relationship hoping to blossom into something brighter. What does George Ryan recommend for someone coming to the salon for the first time who just wants to pamper themselves? “Our classical manicure pedicure and a glass of wine. Enjoy the original artwork and pieces in the store- an extension of my showroom in Palm Beach.” George Ryan embodies the hope and ambition that beats at the heart of every thriving community. To find out more, stop by George Ryan Salon at 2221 Wilton drive. Right here, in Wilton manors. Call 954-565-4562 for more information.

Our very anatomy cries out against the lie that homosexual acts are ‘ok.’” The Log Cabin Republicans, a national gay republican group, is back in court still challenging the constitutionality of the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Even though Congress already repealed the ban, which will formally end later this month, these guys aren’t giving up. The group is hoping to set a legal precedent to ensure the ban on gays never returns, just in case someone like Michele Bachmann, who has stated she would reinstate the law, is elected president next year. Speaking of republicans, presidential hopeful Rick Santorum recently told an audience that the LGBT community has “Gone Out on a Jihad” against him. Santorum is known for his homophobic slurs and in 2003 gay rights activist Dan Savage Google bombed him so that anyone who searched his last name would find the first result to be SpreadingSantorum.com, which offers an alternate (and very crude) definition to the ex-senator of Pennsylvania’s last name. Speaking of Pennsylvania a new poll from the Philadelphia Daily News shows found that 50 percent of Pennsylvanians support a constitutional amendment supporting gay marriage. That’s up from 42 percent in 2009. And when asked about civil unions a whopping 62 percent support them for gay couples, up from 42 percent in 2004 and 58 percent in 2009. Lastly gossipy website Gawker.com named Tim Cook the most powerful gay man in America. Cook recently replaced CEO of Apple Steve Jobs, who resigned for medical reasons, as head of the company. Cook also topped the fifth annual OUT magazine’s Power 50. In fact this year was his debut on the list.

Let’s Face it – Homophobia is so Gay Why anti-gay straight politicians turn out to be gay By Wayne Besen
T
his week, we learned that virulently anti-gay Puerto Rican Senator Robert Arango was on a diet. Like any straight man wanting to show off his sculpted new body, he posted pictures of his anus on the gay men’s cruising software Grindr. Last week, a homophobic Indiana lawmaker, Rep. Phillip Hinkle (R), answered a Craig’s List ad for an $80 male prostitute looking for a Sugar Daddy. After he was exposed by the escort, Hinkle said that he isn’t gay and declared, “I don’t know what was going through my mind.” And, of course, we all know about Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) who sought sex in a Minneapolis airport men’s room by tapping his foot. These tawdry tales of deception and deceit are tailor-made for the tabloids. They provide vindication for the LGBT community and punish villains who deserve their fate. However, it is time to look beyond the headlines and have the psychiatric community examine the heads of closet cases that inflict enormous damage on their own people. These disgusting betrayals are much greater than hypocrisy. They represent fullfledged pathology that has devastating consequences for the LGBT community. To protect their “dirty” secret, these scoundrels are inciting persecution and passing discriminatory laws that lead to many forms of suicide: career, social, financial, emotional, spiritual, and actual. Gay couples with limited rights must pay higher taxes and hire expensive lawyers to draw up contracts. These couples must also endure the emotionally devastating prospect of not having hospital visitation rights when emergencies strike. Careers are irreversibly harmed when homosexuals hit glass ceilings or they are fired in states that offer no legal protections. And, we lose young people every day who hear homophobic rhetoric coming from closeted politicians or those influenced by them. Enough is enough. Society needs to stop being squeamish and treating these vulgar events as personal tragedies or sordid anomalies. Such phenomenon are neither episodic nor mere coincidence, but part of a pervasive pattern that strongly suggests that the most rabid homophobes are usually gay. Indeed, solid
research backs up this hypothesis: In 1986, a University of Georgia study by Dr. Henry Adams proved that men who are most outspokenly anti-gay were the ones most likely to be turned on by gay porn. Given the research and empirical evidence, activist and sex columnist Dan Savage is on the money when he asks: “Have we reached a tipping point yet? Shouldn’t homophobic politicians and anti-gay bullies be presumed to be gay until they get caught up in a straight sex scandal?” My opinion is not mere speculation, but comes from my own behavior while living in the closet. During my freshman year in high school, I confronted a fellow student in my debate class with an anti-gay epithet. He looked me in the eyes and presciently replied, “Those who call other people fags are usually the real homosexuals.” A similar situation happened in Puerto Rico when Sen. Arango once gay-baited a

political opponent and even used a rubber duck to convey that this man was gay (Apparently, the word for duck is an anti-gay slur in Puerto Rico). The difference was that I was 13 and trying to grapple with my sexual orientation and Arango never grew up and progressed to passing anti-gay laws. The teenage homophobia that I employed took two distinct forms. The first was de-
flecting suspicion by laughing at anti-gay jokes. The second was actually telling the jokes to gauge my social group’s reaction, hoping I could find someone who was also a closeted homosexual. The ideal situation for such individuals is to find fellow closet cases that create safe conditions to maintain the heterosexual façade while enjoying the sexual benefits of someone who is open and honest about their sexual orientation. Of course, I’m not suggesting that the majority of people with anti-gay attitudes are actually gay. Most hostility still comes from heterosexuals brought up in families where religion-based bigotry is preached. But, I strongly believe that those who are most visibly animated and unusually motivated by homosexuality probably have a strong desire to enter that arena. If every anti-gay activist and politician came out today it would not end opposition to LGBT equality, but it would take the heart out of this insidious movement. We have to stop laughing (not completely) at these sex scandals and start learning more about the psychological dynamics that drive closet cases into conservative politics and anti-gay activism. It is an underdeveloped field of study that deserves scholarly attention from the top research institutions and universities in America.

We were especially worried our friend James had an interview at the World Trade Center that morning. He planned to leave very early, commuting in rollerblades the 60 or so blocks from Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus to the Towers. Luckily he was several blocks away when he saw the first plane hit. A distant cousin of mine was early for work that day at the World Trade Center, leaving a pregnant widow. However, not only did the attack symbolize the true end of the Clinton Era, but for many it took away the New York we so… loved. A few days later, in a voicemail, Andrew one of my best friends from Philly, told me he graduated from boot camp and expected to be deployed to Afghanistan
ed after being attacked. We feared asking, “How are you,” because we didn’t want to believe someone else lost a boyfriend, wife, sibling or parent in the towers. Fordham lost a few hundred graduates from many a graduating class. My alma mater was in mourning, a Mass held in their honor. I was numb, not scared, until my mother

lthough I graduated in May there was one more class to complete that fall. Rather than commute from 160th and Broadway, where I lived, to 60th and Broadway, where I went to school, I spent the night at my friend Matt’s dorm, on the evening of Monday, September 10, 2001. “I’m almost entirely certain we’d be living very different lives right now, if not for that day,” my friend and fellow editor Paul Hagen recently lamented. There are pictures of us carrying on carelessly that night. A friend was in town from Zurich with her boyfriend, whom had never before been to the U.S. What an introduction to Manhattan! Matt also had an early class. On Tuesday, September, 11, 2001 he shook me awake. When Matt is nervous or excited he laughs rather contagiously. “Wake up,” he shouted. Of course I protested, mornings are not my favorite time of day, but he was very insistent. I couldn’t tell what he said at first, through nervous laughter. Then, it registered, surely a ruse to wake me. “A plane hit the World Trade Center,” was what he was incredibly telling me as he pointed to the TV. I asked for my glasses, Matt put them on my face to not waste time. I looked at the TV and saw that plane burning away, in a scene now burned into my memory these past 10 years. “Oh, Matt, there’s another plane coming to rescue them,” I said. It was New York where every cloud had a glittering, silver lining from Tiffany’s. Recalling the horror of the second collision, coupled with the optimism of being 22, still makes me sick.
ready showing hairline cracks. On September 13, I was scheduled to interview with Sotheby’s, the auction house, which for an Art History major with ambitions to work in appraisals was the crème de la crème of employers. The HR representative laughed at me when I called to confirm my interview. I struggled four years and took any job, all ended up being temporary jobs. I law clerked, was an editorial assistant in science publishing, a personal assistant in people’s homes and remember walking a lot, alone. Yes, to save money, but also to wonder where had “my New York” gone and would it come back, although I already knew the answer. “Mommy,” I remember saying on the phone, knowing it was too soon to say what I intended, “they took away my New York.” The impossibility of finding work caused me, and many others, to return to their hometowns. I thought, when they finally caught Bin Laden in May, my sadness over what he did to my neighbors, country, friends and to me would somehow fade. Yet, his death cannot repair what my generation lost that morning. My friend however returned from war unscathed and named me godfather to his son. He is a boy too young to know about that morning 10 years ago. In that regard he is as innocent as my friends and I were, smiling happily for the camera in a college dorm.

No American will ever forget this century’s day of infamy, September 11, 2001
T
his week the national and local media will be memorializing the tenth anniversary of the terrible attacks upon our country. In the LGBT community, we of course remember Mark Bingham, the young gay man who was the hero of Flight 93. We salute the gay priest who lost his life with hundreds of firefighters and thousands of citizens when the Twin Towers gave way, reigning destruction and death upon an unsuspecting nation. Months later, we saw how many within the LGBT community, like so many Americans, came together to work with millions to repair and restore the lives of those challenged by the disaster. We were even able to make a social point, that the legal disparity of gay couples compromised their rights in accessing support for their own loved ones. Sadly, we also saw the disgrace of greed corrupt one young gay man, unfortunately right here in South Florida, falsely scam-
ming the American Red Cross and gay rights groups for financial support, illegally acquiring funds after claiming he lost a domestic partner that never existed. That story, of Patric Ian Henn, will air on CNBC Wednesday, September 7, on a show entitled American Greed: 9/11 Frauds. We still live the story of 9/11 everyday, not only in the wars our soldiers continue to fight, but in the emotional landscape at home. We face increased security checks in every public building as well as airports, and alert ourselves to suspicious incidents as possible acts of terror. Our lives were changed that day forever, our psyche of invincibility tempered. We now recognize anyone anywhere at any time and in any place can become the victim of a random act of terror. Now that I am turning 60, I think of the 1960’s. This is not the way I thought life would be when I was a teenager at Woodstock watching Jimi Hendrix. “All we are

saying,” we sang repeatedly, “is give peace a chance.” We were the flower children trying to end a war in Vietnam. Today, our children are trying to get their iPad to sync with their iPod and iPhone. It’s a different era and a different reality, but the enhancement of social media in Middle Eastern nations will liberalize and modernize socially backwards societies, exposing younger generations to the blessings and burdens of more participatory and democratic governments. The expanding freedoms in those countries will be the greatest shield for Americans in our country. As the world merges together with common aspirations and mutual goals, we will all come to see that we have much more in
common than we do apart. We will reject the false pariahs of hate and discrimination. That identical principle has been the force within the LGBT community as well. We have shown we are entitled to be partners within the circle, rather than outcasts. So too have now millions of citizens living under dictators in the Mideast start to rise against the bonds of injustice which strangled their societies. Our losses on 9/11 were neither black or white, rich or poor, Jew or Gentile. They did not come from red states or blue states. They came from every state in the world and impacted the lives of every country and each of its citizens. This week, as we approach a sad but necessary tenth look back on the tragedy that befell America and shocked the world, ask yourself what you can do today to help make the world a more caring, loving, peaceful place tomorrow. Ask yourself what you can do to create a world that will prevent future generations from having deal with the horrors of hate instead of the harmony of hope. Ask yourself, as President John Fitzgerald Kennedy asked the nation in 1961, not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. And then your life as an LGBT American will have a purpose greater than yourself. You will have served your country, freedom, and the future.

14 year-old Passaic New Jersey Latina single mother of a baby boy she named Carlos Sindrid Morera left her son to be raised by her mother while she went away to find her destiny. The boy’s father would surface occasionally and that always meant trouble. Whenever his mother returned to visit her child, the boy felt only anger at her absence. In school, he was an outsider who was beat up daily, and even his art teacher told him he just wasn’t any good. If this sounds like a Dickensian recipe for a disastrous life, you will be surprised when you jump ahead 20 years to the day the handsome young poet, Sin Morera, escorts his mother to an elegant Manhattan venue for a party thrown by Patrick Conseil, the VP of Creative at Warner Music, to celebrate Sin’s signing with Warner.

that the song would be recorded by singer Christina Undhjem, Morera protested. “I didn’t want anyone else doing that song. Finally my lawyer, Fred Davis, who is the son of Clive Davis, convinced me. It went gold in Europe. A few months later my grandmother died and I had a bad time with it. I dropped out of the music business entirely for a few years.” Morera’s ex-lover, a New York City cop who remains his close friend, talked him back into the business by giving him his first set of turntables and suggesting he become a DJ. His friends in the business are glad he is back, and has a strong friendship with his mother. His life is again full of promise but when he gets started on the subject of bad boyfriends, the anger flashes in his eyes and you remind yourself never to cross a passionate poet who knows when he is loved or not. There is much more to Morera’s fascinating story, most of which I am not at liberty to disclose. Waiting 13 years to read it seems unfair. Meanwhile, you will find him in his music. Madonna…Remember Her?
While the 53 year-old diva’s vocal popularity might be waning she keeps herself busy. According to Britain’s Daily Mail, she was spotted in Cannes with her 24 year-old boyfriend, dancer Brahim Zaibat and her children who…really aren’t that much younger than Madonna’s mate. They have been together since last fall, and seem happy. She’s also been sending out screeners of her latest film project “W.E.” and…shockingly reviews have been positive. Britons will love the film until they…learn who directed it. The story follows the life and sacrifices of American divorcee Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII who gave up an empire to marry her in 1936. Despite the deluxe life of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor it does not eclipse the essence of the story drawn perhaps from Madonna’s experiences. Namely, great wealth doesn’t mean anything unless there is someone with whom to share the trappings. The film premiered at the Ven-

Chaz Bono Two-Steps into Your Living Room
Chaz Bono will be a contestant on Dancing With the Stars. It’s the first time Bono will join a reality cast, and marks the highest-profile transgender individual to appear on such a show in the United States. “His documentary, Becoming Chaz, was a great chance for viewers to meet the man behind the headlines,” said Hernon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD. “Appearing on such a high profile show will allow millions of Americans to get to know him in a new light.” Of course…DWTS is already taking heat from conservatives who don’t want

to let Bono take the lead. Cher and Lacey Schwimmer, Bono’s proposed dance partner, have been twittering and press releasing in support of Bono. We just hope Bono won’t…go from reality show novice to reality show slut, which is a far less polite way of saying “fixture.” Reality show fixture Carson Kressley also joins the 13th season, which will premiere on Monday, Sept. 19. We’re also looking forward to Ricki Lake’s time doing the cha-cha on the show, after all gay legend Divine taught her how to walk in high-heels.

If you’re closeted, married, and serve in politics on a platform at least partially built on anti-gay sentiments…don’t solicit gay sex in some kind of electronic manner! Eventually you’ll be caught. Anthony
Weiner taught us don’t go sexting if you’re a heterosexual in office – a realheterosexual that is! Roberto Arango, Republican Senator from Puerto Rico, is a pretend-heterosexual recently caught with his…grinder exposed on Grindr. The nude pics documented recent weight loss, he claimed, but did not explain why those images ended up on the gay hook-up site. Prior to this he was known as being anti-gay and anti-gay adoption. Rather than incur scandal he graciously handed in his letter of resignation. On second thought…if you’re a pretend-heterosexual politician with an anti-gay agenda do, by all means, show us your policies!
Play Money
Ah, Italy! The cuisine, the art, the culture, the…unending stream of crazy politicians. Luca Sellari, mayor of the tiny village of Filettino, only 60 miles from Rome, began producing his own currency to fight austerity measures adopted in Italy. He also wishes to form his own independent state for the village of 600 people under the leadership of a monarch. Guess who wants to be king? “It’s everyone’s dream to be a prince,” he told the New York Times. Talk about queeny! Sellari hopes Filettino will emulate the tiny republic of San Marino, a sovereign nation surrounded by Italy. His way of thinking might seem askew but San Marino is the world’s oldest state and constitutional republic. Also…they have no national debt, quite a surprise.

Back-to-School Preparations By Dana Rudolph
H
urricane Irene raged up the East Coast this past weekend, sending people scrambling to the stores for bottled water and canned tuna. Of course, hurricanes weren’t the only thing I prepared for this week. Back-to-school time is here, so I’ve been buying pencils and erasers alongside the flashlight batteries. And because I am an LGBT parent, I’ve also been thinking about the “emergency supplies” we should have as we navigate the sometimesstormy weather of our educational system, in case our children encounter anti-LGBT prejudice, bullying, or simply exclusion. Some of the most exciting new schoolrelated resources this year are about sports, long an area where homophobia and transphobia have reigned. A 2008 study by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) found that some students BMW d / / with LGBT parents were told they should
not do sports, or had their athletic abilities questioned, because they had LGBT parents. And GLSEN’s 2009 National School Climate Survey found that over a third of LGBT students avoided locker rooms, making them the most feared place in the school for these students. But GLSEN in May launched Changing the Game: The GLSEN Sports Project, backed by a coalition of athletes, journalists, and sports figures. It features “Game Plan” resources for athletes, athletic administrators, coaches and parents, inspirational videos about people making a difference, and the Team Respect Challenge pledge “for teams to commit to treat all teammates with respect.” The San Diego Padres in July became the first professional team to sign it. (sports. glsen.org) Athlete Ally, launched in January, offers P individuals an online pledge to reduce homophobia in sports. Founded by Hudson Taylor, a straight, three-time NCAA Division I All-American wrester, now a Division I wrestling coach at Columbia University, the site also includes a weekly “Ally’s Playbook” video with suggestions for how nonLGBT athletes can help reduce homophobia. Hudson is also seeking high school and college students to be “Athlete Ally Ambassadors” to promote the pledge and participate in future initiatives. (athleteally.org) And the Sports Project at the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), launched in 2001, has long been a powerhouse of advocacy and education. It also offers legal assistance for LGBT athletes and coaches. (nclrights.org. Go to Issues & Cases: Sports) Sports aside, there are also a number of

TRY THIS EXERCISE BOSU PUSHUP Joey De Fini demonstrates the Bosu Pushup
By Peter Jackson, CPT The key to big pecs
Howard Tonkin of Johnny’s Miami shows off his pecs.

Q: What tips do you have for building big pecs? A: The pectoralis major, also called the pectorals or pecs, is the main muscle in the chest whose primary job is to bring the arms together in front of the rib cage. To build a bigger chest you will need to engage in a variety of exercises from different angles to stimulate this large muscle. Push-ups, bench presses and flyes should be at the top of your list. Use free weights, especially dumbbells, and cables instead of machines, which often restrict your range of motion and will not effectively recruit supporting muscles. Heavy weight is key to stimulating the muscle fibers and gaining size in your chest. You can lift more with barbell bench presses, so go heavy and lift in the lower rep range; go relatively lighter with dumbbells. For safety, always train with a buddy or invest in a personal trainer.
Freshen up your workout and make your pushups a bit more challenging with this terrific exercise which works a number of muscle groups including the chest and arms. 1) Flip a Bosu ball over so the flat portion is facing upward and the half-ball side is on the floor. 2) Position your hands on either side of the top, as pictured. 3) Tighten your abs and glutes and lower your body uniformly until you are just a couple inches away from touching the surface of the ball. Return to the starting position. Do 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 12.
To build the upper chest, I favor an incline bench press using a barbell. For variation, try a reverse grip or use dumbbells. Use a wide grip to hit the outer areas of the pectorals; conversely, try a close grip to work the centerline of the chest. Tip: Varying the angle of the bench for incline or decline exercises can have a significant impact on muscle stimulation. To target the lower chest line, decline bench presses and decline flyes are great exercises. When selecting equipment, remember that cables can increase your range of motion, allowing you cross the centerline with resistance during a chest flye. This increased motion will help target the center of the chest, while dumbbells can be effective at working the outer chest as they provide maximum resistance due to gravity at the open position or when the arms are out to the sides.
TIP OF THE WEEK QUICK OMELETTE BREAKFAST Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Ideally your first meal of the day be between 500-600 calories and comprise at least 20 g of protein and 5 g or more of fiber. The following breakfast takes all of 2 minutes to prepare!
Minute Omelette with Toast Per meal: 540 cal., 24 g protein, 73 g carbs, 19 g fat, 8 g fiber 1 egg ¾ c thawed frozen spinach 1 slice Canadian bacon, diced 2 slices whole wheat bread 1 Tbsp almond butter 1 c Welch’s grape juice Stir together the egg, spinach and bacon and pour the mixture onto a plate coated with cooking spray. Microwave for 1 min, or until egg is fully cooked. Toast the bread and eat it with the almond butter. Chase it down with the grape juice. Benefits: Monounsaturated fat in the almond spread will help prevent spikes and drops in your blood sugar which can leave you feeling tired. Grape juice gives you an antioxidant called resveratrol, which not only helps lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, but also improves blood flow to the heart. Well known among gay sports fans for his athletic skills in playing rugby, and for his outgoing friendly personality before that fateful day of 9/11, Mark will be forever remembered for his heroic act. His mother, Alice Hoagland, has become a leading gay rights activist. Mark’s memory is also kept alive through the Mark Bingham Foundation (markbingham.org), as well as various honors and sports tournaments. A feature length documentary about Mark’s life and the work his mother has taken up since his death, premiered earlier this year.
