Young MSM Meth Users May be a High-Risk Group for HIV By Healthy Living News

vealed that for young MSM, there is an association between crystal meth use and high-risk behavior that increases HIV infection risk. The study recruited 595 adolescent boys and men ages 12 to 24 years. All self-reported as being sexually active with other males. Study participants then answered a survey on drug use and risky sexual behavior. Of the larger group, 64 reported they had used crystal meth in the last 90 days. Compared with those in the study who had not recently used crystal meth, the meth users had a higher history of sexually transmitted diseases (51 percent vs. 21) and two or more sex partners in the past 90 days (85 percent vs. 63). They were also more likely to have had sex with an IV drug user (51 percent vs. 10) or someone with HIV (32 percent vs. 11). In addition, they were also less likely to use condoms during every sexual encounter (33 percent vs. 54). Recent meth use was also associated with lower rates of school attendance and higher levels of homelessness. Study author Dr. Jonathan Ellen, a pediatrician and adolescent health specialist at Johns Hopkins noted that

crystal meth -- a popular and relatively cheap street drug also known as Tina-heightens sexual response and lowers inhibitions leading to high risk behavior. “Add meth and you have a formula that leads to increased sexual risk in a group that already has higher prevalence of HIV,” added study co-investigator Nancy Willard, also of Johns Hopkins. The study authors did concede that there were some limitations to the study. For example, it did not clearly establish a cause/effect relationship between crystal meth use and high-risk behavior, or the other way around. But there was a clear association for both. In addition, because the study recruited participants from high-risk urban settings it may not accurately represent all young MSM. Study participant’s drug use was also self-reported -- data that can be unreliable in studies. The researchers further cautioned that any drug abuse -- not just of crystal meth -- can increase risky behavior. Study participants who reported using other drugs such as cocaine, crack, heroin and ecstasy, were also twice as likely than non-drug users to have sex with HIV-infected partners and injection drug users.

Scores protest assaults on 3 Utah gay men SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – The sister of a man who was injured in the latest attack against gay men says it is “intolerable to treat someone as less than precious and valuable.’’ “I’m LDS. My family is LDS,’’ said Marnie Nelson Bales, of Tooele. “And you know, it

doesn’t matter. He’s my brother. We love him.’’ Her brother, Cameron Nelson, wants to see an end to the violence, she told the estimated 100 to 200 people who attended the event to protest the assaults. Bales spoke Friday night at a fireside vigil in the capital city’s Liberty Park, the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune reported. Nelson was beaten early Thursday by two or three people yelling anti-gay slurs outside the American Fork hair salon where he works. He suffered a broken nose and other injuries. The attack was the third such on gay Utah men in the last two weeks. Dane Hall, a victim of a beating at Club South in Salt Lake City two weeks ago, had his jaw broken in three places and six teeth knocked out. He thanked the crowd for their support, speaking through

his wired-shut jaw. “Thank you for coming out and supporting us,’’ Hall said. “I don’t know how to express myself, but just know that I am very thankful.’’ He has said he expects his medical bills to surpass $40,000, but he has no insurance. A second gay man also was attacked near Club South the same night, but police do not believe the two incidents are related. Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank shared a personal story about his cousin, a gay man who was a victim of domestic violence on multiple occasions but wouldn’t report the violence for fear of others finding out about his sexual orientation. He told the crowd that it’s important to involve police when violence takes place. Police handed out cards that detail how the public can submit confidential tips to detectives. “We have people in our community who still cannot come forward because of the stigma that may be attached to them,’’ Burbank said. “Any crime represents a failure of our society, especially a crime like this.’’ The nondenominational church City of Hope Salt Lake organized the event, which ended with participants marching with glow sticks through the streets of Salt Lake City and showing pictures of Hall’s injuries.

Women of Color Health Expo at Pride Center By Andrea Dulanto

F

or the first time in South Florida, a health expo will directly address the needs of LBT women of color. The Women of Color Health Expo takes place at the Pride Center in Wilton Manors on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Several organizations have come together to bring this event to the community. They include Area Resource and Referral Organization for Women; Rainbow Ladies- Our Space; and Beta Phi Omega Sorority. In addition to health booths, visitors can enjoy food and entertainment. There is no cost to attend. Dr. Nan Van Den Bergh, founder of ARROW and professor of social work at Florida International University, emphasizes the Expo “is open to all women…all families and allies of LBT women of color…regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin or sexual orientation.” Confirmed participants are Memorial Regional Hospital; Broward County Health

Department; University of Miami Project Care, which supports Black women who have survived breast cancer; Women in Distress with information on same sex domestic violence; YWCA Family Wellness Program, and many others. Services include breast exams, HIV testing, blood sugar and cholesterol screenings as well as information on low cost or no cost mammograms and Pap tests. Explore complementary medicine with the Annie Appleseed Project, acupuncture physician and traditional Chinese medicine practitioner Amy Sear, and instructors of yoga, tai chi and self-defense. Van Den Bergh shares how the historic Expo became a reality: “Rainbow Ladies, a social and service organization for Black LBT females, contacted ARROW to organize a health fair.” By training more than 200 health pro-

viders to work with the LBT women’s community and presenting health information at hundreds of community events over the past four years, ARROW has become an important local resource for LBT women’s health. Based on this commitment, ARROW received a Susan G. Komen Foundation grant for the Women of Color Health Expo. “Hopefully this can be an annual event,” says Van Den Bergh. “However, there are many costs involved in addition to the 100 percent volunteer time on the part of ARROW, Rainbow Ladies and Beta Phi Omega Sorority.” Rainbow Ladies and Beta Phi Omega focus on empowerment for LBT women of color and all women. While the Rainbow Ladies’ mission is “to enrich the lives of…women and [their] allies through education, community involvement, health awareness and social networking.” Beta Phi Omega works to build “a uni-

fied, unique, diverse…sisterhood.” The Expo reaches out to all communities that lack access to health care. Yet Van Den Bergh underscores that “studies have found lesbian[s] have greater risks for breast cancer, gynecological cancer, lung cancer and cardio-vascular disease. Barriers to quality health care include [lack of] health insurance, lower incomes, and discrimination.” How can we confront these barriers? ARROW offers training to health care providers on how to reach out to LBT women. Van Den Bergh also observes that “gay male organizations need to provide equal visibility and advocacy of LBT women’s health risks.” Furthermore, she asks LBT women to “be proactive” by following medical guidelines for breast and Pap exams, regular exercise, as well as eating more fruits and vegetables and limiting alcohol intake. Regardless of the debate over the health reform law, most Americans would agree that awareness and education are vital components to maintaining health. A visit to the Women of Color Health Expo could be an important step in that direction.

As an added bonus to being under the umbrella of the NGLCC the newlyformed organization will offer much lower rates to members. xpress your born-to-be-wild side at the Key West Poker Run, Sept.15-18. This annual event welcomes 10,000 participants to South Florida. Even though it’s billed as a motorcycle even there’s no need to invest in a Harley. All motorcycles, cars and trucks can participate in the picture-perfect South Florida drive on U.S. Highway 1 from Miami to Key West. “A lot of people go in cars,” confirms Brenda Bastos, Marketing Manager of Peterson’s Harley-Davidson. The event is sponsored this year by Phil Peterson of Peterson’s Harley-Davidson of Miami/South, As you travel the Poker Run, you’ll make five stops to pick up a card. If you end up with the best poker hand at the end you win. The ten best hands are eligible for a game of Texas Hold-Em, competing for a new Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 Iron or $6,000. months and to contribute to charity. The Poker Run benefits the Sunrise Rotary Club and the Diabetes Research Institute, raising almost $500,000 for research over the past twenty years. Bastos says first-time participants can “expect a lot of bikers [and] a Mardi Gras style party.” What if you’re not familiar with biker culture? Do you need a jacket stitched with a bad-ass nickname? First, you watch too much Sons of Anarchy. Second, Bastos agrees that bikers are often “stereotype[d] as large, bearded people, who get drunk and cause a ruckus.” But Bastos attests to different types of bikers road warriors as well as “people who wear a suit and tie…and on weekends, get all bikered out.” There are also women riders, particularly lesbians. “The biker community is stereotyped same as the gay and lesbian community,” observes Bastos. She encourages participants: “Come as you are you don’t need to be someone you’re not.”

Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin Announces Bid for Senate

If elected she would become the first openly gay senator By Lisa Keen

Keen News Service

U

SFGN.com Is Coming Out

6

.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin said Wednesday that her campaign for a U.S. Senate seat from Wisconsin “will not be about me,” but she’s “prepared to respond to any number of likely attacks in this political age,” including ones based on her being gay. Baldwin, one of only four openly gay members of the U.S. House, announced Tuesday that she will seek the Democratic nomination to replace Senator Herb Kohl, a Democrat who announced in May that he would not seek re-election in 2012. Although Baldwin is not the first openly gay person to run for a U.S. Senate seat, her campaign has ignited considerable enthusiasm in the LGBT political community. Chuck Wolfe, head of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which supports openly gay candidates for elective office, said in a telephone conference call with LGBT media Wednesday that the Victory Fund “believes this will be an important race for our community.” He predicted the community would “rally around” Baldwin, whom he called a “stellar” representative of the community. Baldwin, who participated in that call and took questions from the media, said she expects the campaign to be “hotly, hotly contested,” as are all Senate races in recent years. The partisan balance has been closely divided for years. Democrats currently have 51 seats plus 2 Independents who caucus with them; Republicans have 47. It takes a majority of 60 to break a filibuster staged by a minority party, and the Republican Party has made filibuster an almost routine maneuver since 2008, in hopes of thwarting a second term for Demo-

cratic President Barack Obama. Following Obama’s election in 2008, Democrats and Independents held 60 seats. Baldwin said her first challenge will be to introduce herself to parts of Wisconsin outside her district of Madison, the state capital. She said currently polling suggests between 52 percent and 55 percent of voters in the state recognize her name. And given the potential “in this political age” for a hotly contested Senate race to include an anti-gay attack, said Baldwin, she’s eager to introduce herself to voters around the state before an attacker does. Baldwin doesn’t necessarily believe an anti-gay attack will be particularly effective in Wisconsin. She noted that the western part of the state has also elected an openly gay member of Congress before U.S. Rep. Steve Gunderson. Gunderson ran for re-election twice after he was outed in 1991. Baldwin noted that she has been openly gay “all my adult life” and she thinks the voters of Wisconsin “appreciate values of honesty and integrity.” “And I have a lifetime commitment to equality for all,” said Baldwin. But “this campaign,” said Baldwin, “will not be about me, it will be about the middle class, the threats they’re facing, and which candidate is the best fighter for them.” Meanwhile, two state representatives in Wisconsin announced Wednesday, September 7, that they will seek the Democratic nomination to run for Baldwin’s seat. One is openly gay Rep. Mark Pocan, who filled in Baldwin’s state assembly seat when she was elected to Congress. The other is State Rep. Kelda Roys, the youngest member of the Wisconsin assembly and former head of the Wisconsin chapter of NARAL.

ith social buying websites like Groupon and Living Social exploding across the Internet Terrence Smalley recognized there wasn’t a local one serving the LGBT community. So he did what any entrepreneur would do -- he started one. Last month he launched CrazyGayDeal.com, which he hopes will fill a local niche that wasn’t being served. In order to reach the LGBT community quickly Smalley reached out to SFGN to advertise. Instead SFGN decided propose a partnership between the two companies. “After one meeting both parties saw the synergy and realized that we could help each other, the advertisers, and the community with a joint venture,” Smalley said. “So a deal was put in place. Now CrazyGayDeal.com will work with the SFGN.com sales team to increase our advertiser contacts. And SFGN. com now has a coupon deal to offer its consumers that is unlike any other coupon site online to date.” Smalley emphasizes though that this venture of his isn’t all about money. A portion of every deal bought will be donated to charity. “With every company I have worked with, every client I have supported, any event I have managed, I always find a way to make it work to help support a charity,” he said. “Business can’t always be about money in your pocket, but how can I help someone else? People keep telling me to start worrying about myself instead of everyone else. But that isn’t who I am, I was raised to always be able to help someone and have always been involved with charity since I can remember. So while making a buck or two is okay, being able to help someone is what makes it all rewarding.” SFGN publisher Norm Kent said he recog-

nizes the value of social buying websites and that’s why he’s excited about working with both CrazyGayDeal.com and The DailyHookUp.com. “These deal of the day websites are hot right now and we don’t want our readers to miss out,” Kent said. “Here at SFGN we’re always trying to find new ways to inform and benefit our readers. And one of the reasons we’ve decided to partner up with these particular companies is that they both donate a portion of their profits to charity.” Visit SFGN.com and click on the CrazyGayDeal.com ad to find the latest deal of the day.

Protests Can’t Dampen Charlotte’s Pride By Julie Seaver

Julie@compassglcc.com

L

ast week, my partner and I joined two former Charlotteans and drove north in between the rain bands of Hurricane Irene on our way to the Queen City. Having never attended a Pridefest that I didn’t have to work, I was really looking forward to attending Pride Charlotte and having a long weekend of fun. Charlotte, hometown of Christian evangelist Billy Graham and heart of the socially conservative Southern Baptist headquarters, served up more than I bargained for in my quest for hospitality and pride. We picked a great year to go, as the community’s greatest anticipation was this year’s move to the metropolitan “uptown” area. Tourist warning: do not call it “downtown,” unless you are into eye rolls and quick corrections. Historically, pride festivities have been held at several community parks and even a parking lot to avoid unwanted guests. The one-day festival was within walking distance of our hotel, the prestigious downtown (oops, “uptown”) Westin Charlotte. The venue boasts 25 sky-soaring floors gleaming in shiny marble, modern glass and a welcoming staff. In this unfamiliar city, I chose to leave my gayest attire behind and made our way out the revolving doors where we realized we weren’t the only same sex couple in town. We arrived at the festival and were greeted with hundreds of families dressed in red shirts I thought read, “God loves the Gays” while passing out complimentary bottles of water. How nice! Hydration has always been an important survivor tip at our sunny Florida pride events, and I was pleased as punch they were being just as hospitable and caring as the community is in Palm Beach County. Not so fast, sunshine. As I took a closer look, the lettering on the red shirts and wa-

Julie Seaver (on the left)

ter bottles became more clear: “God Has a Better Way.” They were not patrons of pride, but mavens of mayhem. The annual protestors had also arrived. While spouting scriptures from the Bible and messaging “change,” a large number of families had dressed their infants and toddlers in these same shirts in varying sizes of hate. The group’s reverend, amplified by loud speakers on the corner, bellowed all day over the entertainment and encouraged the group’s participation in random acts of “kindness” by giving out bottled water and informative pamphlets. In my book, that reads, “Here is a free bottle of water and some silent condemnation extended in love! If you don’t repent today, you are going to need that bottle of water in hell’s eternal fiery damnation. Have a nice day!” For a while, we were in disbelief, not only of the amount of protestors there were, but the fact that an additional brigade of special volunteers of peace were recruited to stand between the event goers and protestors. Our anger grew as we watched the upcoming young gaylings

September 14, 2011 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com

shout at the protestors, loud and proud to show off their true colors. As we walked, more small groups of protestors set up shop on the main street corners holding up their signs of sin, and armed with bottles of complimentary holy water. This just pissed me off. I marched back to the hotel, threw on my coveted “Got Gay” shirt from home and set out to represent Palm Beach with enough pride to pop the pious right out of them. Not used to protestors at South Florida pride events, I quickly found out that protesting and hating others is truly exhausting work. The photo above is me getting over it,

getting on with it and having the fun I set out to have. If you don’t recognize me, I’m the one singing “That’s me in the spotlight. That’s me in the corner, losing my religion.” As we start planning next year’s PrideFest of the Palm Beaches, I will remember our brothers and sisters across small town America who advocate in adverse situations for our human rights. Besides pride, I found perspective. I let go of the disdain, ignored the damnation and celebrated the diversity. Julie Seaver is the Development Director at Compass Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Palm Beach County.

Off the Wall

The Lavender Mafia By Pier Angelo “I want you to take care of that sonofabitch right away. I don’t want to see him no more. I want you to make that first thing on your list, understand?” (from The Godfather)

T

he history of the Mafia is sketchy but many believe that it was born in order to protect the less fortunate and the poor peasants of Sicily. The American branch begun around 1893 when Don Vito Cascio Ferro fled the island to New York after the murder of banker Emanuele Notarbartolo. The Italian mafia in the U.S. is sometimes referred to as La Cosa Nostra (“Our Thing”). It continues to dominate organized crime in the United States. In a continuous effort to break down the mafia control over the southern part of the country the Italian government has been sending soldiers to fight the secretive and dangerous crime network. Something every Italian government has been trying to do, with varying degrees of flaccidity, for the last one hundred years. “Pentito” the Italian word that has always carried a religious connotation (he who has repented in front of God) has now taken a new meaning. It designates people in Italy who, formerly part of criminal or terrorist organizations, following their arrests de-

cide to “repent” and collaborate with the judicial system to help investigations. “Omerta”- Sicilian for “code of silence”, the vow, among men of honor, that, for over 100 years kept them from betraying their secrets to the authorities, is being slowly broken, in more ways than one. Many of those arrested have started to “sing and dance” and not to the soundtrack of “The Godfather”. A show tune seems to be more likely because a new twist has been thrown into the equation. The cement door of the closet has been opened, and Gay Mafia Dons are being outed in droves. Gay life in Italy is a complex subject that often confuses queers from more open countries. The Italians, in a general sense, don’t proclaim their sexuality if it’s homo or bi. Only in recent years has the subject been openly talked about. The Catholic Church continues to exert a tremendous influence on everyday attitudes. It is no accident the Mafia has grown in the home of the Vatican. Both demand the same fidelity from their followers and punish those who are different or stray from the rules with death, either earthly or eternal. In the meantime the prosecutor in charge of the ongoing investigations has revealed that there are more gay bosses than ever

imagined. These gay bosses are marked men, as good as dead. The Mafia does not tolerate homosexuality. You can be a friend of Dominick but not a Friend of Dorothy. On the outside they exhibit their usual machismo but in private they have male lovers or frequent male prostitutes. The police have, following tips provided by the pentiti, intercepted and recorded dozens of phone conversations between rent boys who freely describe the homosexual preferences of powerful Godfather like figures. In a page taken out of The Soprano, fiction and reality become one, and stealing directly from the show, we can just imagine the consigliere talking to the members of the famiglia after they have killed the outed capo: “You know, maybe it is better this way. You wouldn’t want him to be a model for the children, after all.” And if this was a musical comedy they would break into a Broadway number: So, you little Italian devils, you want to know about love? If you want to make a woman happy you rely on what you were born with because it is in your blood. “Be Italian” (from Nine) Like the characters of the HBO hit, killing, lying, stealing and cheating on your wife aren’t sins. But going gay sure is. Vito Spatafore’s brutal end in the famous episode of The Sopranos was one of the most telling and chilling moments in the show’s expose of mob Catholic hypocrisy. As Phil Leotardo watches, his hench-

12

men tape Vito’s mouth shut and beat him to death. But do Vito’s killers suffer any remorse? Do they believe that they’ve done something sinful and wrong? Not for a moment. In fact, bolstered by perverted Mafia logic, they actually pat each other on the back for having performed a service to humanity and manhood itself, not to mention Jesus Christ and the Church. Vito, whose character is based on real life Vito Arena, a homosexual mob associate in the Gambino crime family, is guilty of “making a mockery of the sacraments” and being “a disgrace to his family.” The fact that they live a life dedicated to constantly breaking every one of the Ten Commandments doesn’t stop them from putting on God’s mantle and passing judgment on one of their own, who murdered and stole like the best of them, but whose only crime, in their eyes, is that he had the balls to become a “ricchion.” By telling the story with an explosive mix of sacred and profane, the show, and the real life events unfolding in Italy, brilliantly portrays the unblemished absurdity of their Catholic beliefs and it forces us to ask what religion really is, what it’s really supposed to do, and where the hell is God, for that matter?

FloridaTogether Florida Together Conference to Feature Inspirational Speakers from Across Country

This year’s fourth annual Florida Together Conference takes place in Miami on Saturday, Sept. 24 starting at 9 a.m. at the Kovens Conference Center, at Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus. “The conference is for activists, allies, and just people interested in becoming more involved,” said Executive Director Michael Kenny. “[Attendees] will get some concrete knowledge and takeaways.” There will be 15 speakers from around the county. They include leaders from the world of activism, government, technology and the arts.

There will also be a screening of “Saint of 9/11” which is about the tragic death of gay New York Fire Department chaplain Father Mychal Judge during the fall of the South Tower. The past three conferences took place in Orlando and had usually about 4 presentations. Kenny wanted to reach out to the rest of the state by moving the conference to Miami this time. In addition, he’s drastically expanded the scope of the conference as well. SFGN decided to took a closer look at this year’s speakers, profiling nine of them including a state

alcolm Lazin has worn so many hats in the past twenty years that his collection could rival that of a London haberdashery. But the one he now covets and wears the most, is the Executive Director of Equality Forum, a national and international LGBT civil rights organization with an educational focus. A prominent Philadelphia attorney, Lazin, who didn’t come out until after law school, is actively involved in civil rights, LGBT rights, historical preservation, community leadership and is now making his foray into show business. She shared her story in a book titled, I’ll Find a Way: A Mother’s Journey of Love and Acceptance for her Gay Son. Davis did not set out to be an author. She’s a nurse by trade and a single mother raising two boys and a girl. Like most moms, she’s worried about her children’s safety, their health and overall well-being. She hoped they would all grow up to be successful, productive adults. “I was determined not to let my children fall into the stereotypes

Kenny hopes that these men and women, and the others slated to speak will inspire people to do their own great work. “Some presenters will make people’s hearts

such an impact on the community. Lazin was a federal prosecutor who lead successful investigations into public corruption, a litigator in a private firm, commissioner of the Pennsylvania Crime Commission, and was awarded the U.S. Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award -- the Department of Justice’s highest honor. But the tentacles of his ambition didn’t stop reaching there. He chaired the Philadelphia Waterfront Development Council, which not only instigated infrastructure improvements but Lazin conceived the idea to light the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and helped raised $1.7 million to fund the project. In addition, Lazin is the chair of the

Washington Square Committee which secured the largest Revolutionary War burial site in Independence National Historical Park. And now Lazin is able to wear the moniker of “executive producer.” Having produced three award winning gay-topic documentaries including “Saint of 911,” about the tragic death of gay New York Fire Department chaplain Father Mychal Judge during the fall of the Twin Towers. This October, however, Lazin will relish in his most enthusiastic accomplishment. October is LGBT History Month and Equalityforum.com proudly joins the celebration by honoring 30 gay icons (one per day) with a short

of the black single parent family, especially with two young males but I was not prepared for the coming out of Rashad,” she said. That coming out first happened to a therapist that Davis contacted because her son was depressed and suicidal. Bullying at school led him to harm himself by cutting his arms. But hearing him say the words “I’m gay” was not enough to convince Davis that her son was a homosexual. “My initial reaction was he’s too young to know what he wants and he is just going through a phase.” But when it became clear that it was not a phase Davis was able to get through the confusing time by focusing on one thing: being a mother.

“This new circumstance took parenting to a new level. I knew that at that moment of discovery that I had a new role, not only as his mother; but now I need to become his protector, his voice, and also his friend. Growing up in an African American home I was taught that being gay was not accepted especially in our Christian community, but as a parent I knew that I loved my son and God loves him also. So I pulled out the boxing gloves and prepared myself for the fight that I had in front of me. I vowed to my son and the GLBTQ community that I will fight for equality forever,” Davis said. Fighting that battle together has brought mother and son closer.

film on their website. The icons are people that have distinguished themselves by making a significant impact on LGBT rights. “Gay history is the only part of society that is not taught history at home, school or religious institutions,” Lazin says. “It’s no wonder that homophobia exists. Without life-empowering resources we are diminished. Resources help empower people and the community and we must take responsibility to teach history.” Visit LGBTHistorymonth.com or Equalityforum.com to check out the iconic films starting in October.

Rashad was able to turn his life around thanks to his mom’s support. He eventually transferred to a more accepting high school and now attends college. “Rashad is now exceeding in everything he does, with parental support the sky is the limit,” Davis said. As for the responses she’s gotten from other parents, Davis says they’ve been mixed, but mostly those of praise and admiration. She offers this advice to other parents: “Do not allow his/her sexual orientation change the relationship between you and your child. The same love that you endured from birth, continue that love into every situation that life brings before you.”

Zach Wahls Overnight gay-rights activist and viral sensation By Lisa Lucas

o look at this handsome, strapping, engineering student from Iowa, who was an exemplary Boy Scout, no one would guess his secret. Actually, he has two secrets. One, he is straight. The other: he was raised by lesbians. And he never thought that talking about it would propel him into the Cyber Hall of Fame. It started in 2009, when he was 17-years-old and the Iowa House of Representatives was slated to pass a constitutional amendment that would to define marriage as between one man and one woman and in so doing reinstate the ban on same-sex marriage in Iowa. Wahls decided to write a letter to the Des Moines Register about his take on the proposed amendment from the perspective of the son of a lesbian couple. Soon after, his phone rang. It was a representative from “One

of SpeakOUT. He started as a speaker with the organization nearly three years ago, then joined the board of directors in the summer of 2009 as director of training and later became co-chair of the board in January 2010. “I joined SpeakOUT because I wanted to make the world a safer, friendlier place for kids and adults dealing with issues of gender and sexuality. I became passionate about SpeakOUT quickly because of the connection I was able to make with the audience and the difference that could be made in their lives,” Lucchesi said. SpeakOUT believes that sharing personal stories and experiences publicly can educate and inform communities about issues that divide them. Usually speakers appear

in pairs and talk for a few minutes about their own lives. They share their experiences of prejudice, as well as how they have evolved to take pride in their sexual or gender identities. Speakers also discuss the details of how they’ve come out to their families, friends and co-workers, and how they’ve faced discrimination and hardships. Most importantly though how they’ve fallen in love and raised families. “People can argue with statistics, but they can’t deny or negate your personal story. In sharing your experience with others you give hope to those that struggle, understanding to those that are unsure and enlightenment to those who have been misled,” Lucchesi says. SpeakOUT encourages audienc-

es to ask questions. Lucchesi says he’s often asked for blunt facts. “Often high school students want to know about the mechanics of gay/lesbian sex. My answer is always the same: ‘Gay or straight there are as many different ways to make love as there are couples on earth.’” I also get lots of religion questions, ‘How does it feel to know you are going to hell when you die?’ The trick in answering is to avoid being shocked or laughing, just answer honestly, respectfully and keep the questioner’s level experience and age in mind.”

Iowa,” a LGBT advocacy group, asking him to testify in front of the House Joint Resolution 6 Committee at a public hearing. He agreed, never expecting that when he shared his impassioned and honest story about why he believed same-gender marriage should be constitutionally protected, that his life would change…and so would the lives of many that heard him speak. It was a Monday night, when he spoke in front of the House and 500 spectators. By Friday night, his testimony had gotten over a million hits on YouTube. “I had no idea this was going to happen,” Wahls said. “The Democrats uploaded my testimony without even asking or telling me and within days it went viral. It’s not like I planned it. I mean, I had written about the subject but I wasn’t an activist. I was just a kid

in high school trying to speak out to defend my family.” Originally from Wisconsin, Wahls’ biological mother, Terry, is a doctor of internal medicine who decided to use donor insemination to have Zach and his sister. When she moved to Iowa she met and married Jackie Reger. Five years later his mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Confined to a wheelchair by 2007, Reger assumed a big part in Wahls’ parenting, even acting as a den mother for his Boy Scout troop, as well as caring for Terry. In 2007, Terry, unwilling to accept her fate, designed a series of cutting edge diets and interventions and has since made an extraordinary recovery. “My mothers are amazing women and I am so lucky to have been raised by them,” Wahls said. “People have been single parents for centuries. I had two moms to

love me.” Wahls, who is straight as is his sister, said he never longed for a father and had many male role models in his life, including football player Brett Favre and his Boy Scout leaders. As a result of his testimony he has been inundated with speaking and writing gigs and has temporarily withdrawn from school. “I think this is a pivotal time for gay rights because there are so many conservative Republicans. If we can just make it to 2013 without the bill passing, I think we’ll be okay. I’m going to do all I can to make that happen.”

Alix Smith Photographer is literally putting a face on equality By Lisa Lucas

ew York photographer Alix Smith spent the last year with her wife, traveling the country taking pictures. Sounds like a fun way to see the sights but she is not your typical tourist – she is on a mission called “States of Union.” A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York, Smith’s work has been exhibited in major galleries across the United States and Europe. Her work has been described as having a “theatrical and painter-like quality reminiscent of the masters” and her “iconic images defy cliché.” Now Smith is using this technique to put a face on a cause. Smith married her psychologist wife in Connecticut in 2009 and has been an outspoken activist for gay marriage and full equality.

y girlfriend and I are going to have a good time in Florida and maybe get a look at South Beach culture,” chuckled State Senator Cale Case of Wyoming in a phone interview. Case, a Republican from what Rachel Maddow calls “the most Republican state in the nation,” is slated to speak at the upcoming Florida Together Statewide Conference in North Miami and plans to take some time to check out the South Florida scene. Rachel Maddow featured Case on a segment of her March 4, 2011 show for his contribution to the effort of preventing passage of an anti-gay marriage bill in Wyoming. He is what Maddow calls “a smallC conservative, a small government Republican.” The “Defense of Marriage” legislation in question, House Bill

“So many people have only been exposed to flamboyant photos of the gay community, like in gay Pride parades,” Smith says. “But it’s important to know that not all gay people wear feather boas and dress in drag. They look just like everyone else.” Smith’s pictures are raw, real portraits of gay families that she digitally transforms into “works of art” based on Classical paintings. According to Smith’s mission statement, “States of Union” has a dual objective. First it acknowledges the gay community’s struggle with self-recognition as well as the struggle many Americans have with accepting gays as worthy of equality. “The photographs give credence to the validity of family life among the gay community by universalizing the very idea of fam-

ily. In a country that does not yet fully recognize same sex families, the visual record provided by ‘States of Union’ may be one of the few formal acknowledgments of these relationships.” “The goal is to show the gay community as real people and real families,” Smith says. “It’s important for people growing up gay to see that they are just like everyone else and to show the anti-gay voters who they are voting against.” One look at her photographs does just that. Smith uses Photoshop to enrich and enhance the images and “to show these people in their best light and allow their personalities to come through.” For now the only place to see the photographs is at Smith’s websites but she is excited that many

will be shown at New York City’s Visual Arts Gallery in an exhibition called “Being American.” “Hopefully the exhibit will help continue funding the project, “ Smith says. “I did get a small grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts because they are nonprofit, but basically I’ve been putting everything on my credit card and it’s pretty much maxed out.” In 2009 PBS did a segment on the project and, through wordof-mouth, word started spreading and emails from potential subjects came pouring in. “There are so many people I want to photograph it’s just really a matter of getting to them.”

74, would have stopped Wyoming’s current recognition of out-of state same-sex marriages and other legal partnerships. The impact of the new legislation would have been enormous, stripping hospitalization visitation, property rights, life and death decision making etc. from same sex couples which would have affected not only residents but also visitors. A Baby Boomer, Case was born in 1958, one year after Wyoming became the first state to legislate that marriage within its borders is between one man and one woman. He knew the law existed but was not familiar with its origin or history. He suspected it had to do with anti-polygamy sentiment since Wyoming shares a border with Utah and is home to a sizable Mormon population. Case attended high school with Matthew Shepard’s father, Dennis

who he says is “less militant than [Matthew’s mother] Judy.” Case has a PhD in economics, was first elected to the Wyoming House of Representatives in 1993 and to the Senate in 1999. When asked if there was any discussion about amending Wyoming’s current gender restrictions, Case cautioned against trying to do too much too fast. “Let’s let this settle in a bit before taking on the next issue,” he said. Case believes there may be a backlash to House Bill 74, but it will probably have to wait because the next session of the legislature is a budget session that requires 2/3 vote to get legislation introduced. Becky Vandenberghe of WyWatch Family Action, a Wyoming-based family-values group, thinks otherwise, however, and has already promised to get a vote

on the bill even under the budget session rules. Case is not a supporter of hate crimes legislation. Wyoming is one of five states that doesn’t recognize hate crimes against any groups or individuals. The other four are Arkansas, Georgia, Michigan and South Carolina. He noted that Judy Shepard was particularly pleased when the federal law passed, “But I’m not sure, myself,” he said. “We have good laws. Judges can increase or decrease penalties for a variety of issues. There’s no need to force them to apply legislated penalties.” In addition to getting acquainted with the Sunshine State, Case is looking forward to speaking to Florida’s gay activists. “It’s really a civil rights issue,” he said. “No one can make someone else second class whether you’re in Wyoming or Florida or anywhere.”

Buckley launched Google’s first offices in South America, oversaw AdWords Online Sales and Operations across Latin America. After graduating from Mougins School in France, Mason returned to the United States and back to the kingdom of his roots. However, acting is not the only career he has set his sights on. He spent a year studying Political Science at California Lutheran University, worked as a volunteer

for Hillary Clinton’s campaign in 2008 and was appointed to serve as a page in the U.S. House of Representatives. He’s also now actively involved in President Obama’s LGBT Leadership Campaign. “I came out when I was 14 and I was always passionate about both acting and politics,” Mason says. “I had to decide how I was going to combine the two and use the acting as a platform to run for office and let my voice be heard.” He has started doing just that with the launch of his “Trailblazer Campaign.” Although he admits that the entertainment industry has made great strides in the last decade he’s still not satisfied. “Studios are still afraid to cast an openly gay actor in a leading

role.” Mason says. “Studios have to give it a chance. If someone is a good enough actor – like Neil Patrick Harris for example – you can play any role and you shouldn’t be discriminated against because of your sexual preference.” “Basically, “Trailblazer’s” goal is to help pave the way for openly gay movie stars, like Sidney Poitier did for African Americans. It’s going to be difficult but I have a feeling that in the next few years there will be a tidal wave in the industry and someone, maybe even me, will do it and the naysayers will say “They were right.”

Europe, Korea and China. During graduate school, she interned at Cell-Life, a South African non-profit that develops mobile apps for HIV workers. She was inspired by her teammates, who worked very hard for little pay and even less recognition, and who chose to devote their lives and talents to the benefit of others. As if that wasn’t enough, Buckley received a Master’s in Business Administration from Stanford in 2009 during which time she started a company that builds low-cost solar panels for entrepreneurs earning under $1 per day. The next year she got a Master’s of Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government where she met Brian Elliot, the founder of Friendfactor. “Brian told me his vision which

I thought was a great model for change in this movement,” Buckley says. “I thought this would be an opportunity to accelerate change in the LGBT community by making it personal for their straight friends, introducing them to the human side of the gay rights movement.” She joined the organization in July 2010, and has since launched its web platform, and now oversees its programs. Since that time, Buckley has overseen internal operations and programs, including the launch of educational and advocacy tools. On the advocacy side, the “Friend-setter” tool generated more than 8,000 calls to state-legislators during the New York marriage campaign and was featured on the front page of the New York Times. “Usually a non-profit campaigns

for money, not advocacy, which is where Friendfactor stands out,” Buckley says. “My family and friends were always very supportive of me but didn’t know what or how they could help. They’re not activists and have never called a legislator or taken any action for gay rights but once they made the calls they felt like they were part of something, that their voice was heard, and what they felt actually mattered.” Buckley believes with the right mix of brightly colored post-it notes, pretzel M&M’s, washable markers, and a little help from friends anything is possible. And based on what she has already accomplished, it seems she is right.

Log Cabin Republicans

R.

Clarke Cooper War Vet, Republican and…gay J.W. Arnold

Clarke Cooper is an Eagle Scout, Army combat veteran in Iraq, former diplomat and Bush Administration appointee…. and he’s gay. The Florida native is conservative and believes it’s not incongruous to be Republican and homosexual. Last year, as the battle to repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the military’s ban on openly gay soldiers was being waged in the halls of Congress, Cooper assumed the leadership of Log Cabin Republicans, the advocacy group for gay conservatives. Cooper recalls telling his deputy executive director, “We need to do a full court press. Let’s hit the armed services committees first and then every other Republican possible.” While other gay activists had written off support from Republicans—other than the more moderate senators from New England—Cooper was surprised by the reception he and his

organization received from other lawmakers. “No one denied us a meeting,” he says. “Even those who probably wouldn’t vote for repeal. In Republican offices, some felt it incumbent to meet with us, as Republicans also, to do due diligence on the issue at least.” What he found was that until his visit, no organizations had reached out to many of the Republican offices at all, assuming they would not even consider the issue. Many of the staffers and Members of Congress he met with had no military experience and little knowledge of LGBT issues. “In the end, we were all conservatives, we talk the talk, walk the walk, and we made the case why repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was a conservative vote,” Cooper says. His experience on the battlefield didn’t hurt, either, as he explained how the policy was weakening the military at a time when the forces are

stretched with two wars. Ultimately, the DADT repeal was a bi-partisan decision, one not accomplished by the Democratic supermajority before the 2010 elections. With a DADT victory under their belts, Cooper and his gay Republicans are turning their attention to the Defense of Marriage Act, which for federal purposes defines marriages as between one man and one woman. “That one, again, is another example of where there is a lot of basic education that needs to take place,” Cooper explains. “DOMA is anti-conservative, government encroachment and there are all kinds of reasons to [repeal it] in addition to it’s the right thing to do.” Again, Cooper is optimistic that bipartisan support can again be raised, especially with a Republican House of Representatives. He says many conservatives can back the domestic tax parity issue and Republican co-sponsors

already support repeal, including Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Miami, one of Cooper’s former bosses. As Republicans seek to govern again, he warns the party must support a more diverse base. “We’re a dying breed if we don’t fix the platform and take a broader stance,” Cooper says. He goes further to encourage the LGBT community to embrace gay conservatives, too. “We can’t immediately be dismissive of people with different views, especially when we cherish the same goals.”

Gay Theater Flourishes in South Florida T By Rod Stafford Hagwood Sun Sentinel

he provocatively titled play “Two Boys in a Bed on a Cold Winter’s Night” had a run this summer at Rising Action Theatre that was so successful the show was held over. Twice. First for two weeks, and then for an additional three. To even the totally uninitiated (read: heterosexual), the promotion for the comedy made it clear this play was about two gay men — mostly naked — hooking up in a one-night stand. “It’s our once-a-year show to pay the rent,” said Jerry Jensen, managing director for Rising Action, a small theater company in Fort Lauderdale. “It was our top-grossing show this season.” Local professional theaters know the audience is there, and have been increasingly targeting productions that resonate with gays and lesbians. Census Bureau numbers released in August confirmed that same-sex households in South Florida soared over the past 10 years. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is attempting to capture the audience by introducing a Pride Series featuring gay-themed musical and comedy performances scheduled from October through June. “Look at it this way: Who else is doing a Pride Series?” asked Kelley Shanley, president and CEO of the Broward Center. “Not a lot of other markets are doing this. I think that speaks to the strength of the gay and lesbian market in South Florida.”

Though this is the inaugural season for the Pride Series, local theater companies were already there. For business partners Garet Scott (playwright) and David Gordon (actor), the gay audience was definitely part of the business plan when the New York-based team took over Fort Lauderdale’s Sol Theatre in 2010 and rechristened it Empire Stage. The inaugural play was Ron Larsen’s “Making Porn,” which chronicles the rise of a gay porn star. Gordon played the protagonist, which he had previously done on the national tour in the late 1990s “Speaking strictly as a producer, you realize that we are so close to Wilton Manors it just makes sense as a businessman,” said Gordon. The company just came off an extremely successful run of the parody “Mommie Queerest.” And now the cozy 48-seat black box space is bringing in a show titled “An Evening With Mister Johnson,” which has a straight version on Thursdays and Saturdays and a gay version on Fridays and Sundays. The Women’s Theatre Project recently staged its third edition of Girl Play, a festival of short plays with lesbian themes produced for the Pride Center at Equality Park in Wilton Manors. Meredith Lasher, a founding member of The Women’s Theatre Project, said that the small company housed in the F.A.T. Village Arts District in downtown Fort Lauderdale didn’t start out to produce plays aimed at a lesbian audience. “There was no design to become a gay or lesbian theater,” she said. “But because women are lesbian, it just worked out

that way. We wanted to tell women’s stories, and that includes lesbians as well. “The [Gay and Lesbian Community Center] in Wilton Manors was having a real struggle doing outreach to the lesbian community,” said Lasher, explaining the impetus for the lesbian-themed festival. “Now we’re getting submissions from all over the world — from Europe, Asia, Africa — so obviously it struck a chord. We must get over 100 submissions a year.” Shows aimed at a gay male audience have it easier, according to Lela Elam, a local actress who is also an “out” lesbian. “Gay guys will come out and support gay theater,” Elam said. “Gays are just very community-oriented. I feel like girls will only hang out with this type of girl or that type of girl. I hope I’m wrong about that, but that’s how I feel. But if I go out with one of my gay guy friends, he will know everyone in that bar.” Gordon said, “[Visiting]…so often I started to see how much more gay Fort Lauderdale had become. Garet is not gay specific in her plays, but gays like her writing more than straights. She has a real tongue-in-cheek humor that gays just get. And she usually has a man dressed as a woman.” But it’s not all over-the-top campy humor. Empire Stage has also seen productions of “Pillowman,” “The First Step: Diary of a Sex Addict” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Rising Action has brought to South Florida serious fare and “dramedies” such as “Boys in the Band,” “Bent,” “Take Me Out,” “The Sum of Us” and “The Killing of Sister George.”

And yet executive artistic director David Goldyn is hesitant to classify Rising Action as a gay theater. “We are and we’re not,” Goldyn said. “We do have a large gay following so we always have that in mind. But a lot of people are coming to see the shows that aren’t gay.We do five or six shows a year, but I can only think of maybe four shows that we’ve done recently that you could call a ‘gay’ show. ‘Grey Gardens,’ ‘Flora the Red Menace,’ ‘The Sisters Rosensweig’ are not gay shows. Lasher, of The Women’s Theatre Project, observed, “South Florida is unique. People here are much more open-minded than some other places in the country. We just have big, open minds here. And I think Wilton Manors and the renaissance of that area is pretty significant too.” But this fare also often brings in an audience that might not otherwise support local plays, she said. “Every company struggles to develop a new audience these days. I know for a fact that there are women who don’t go to see any other theater, but they will come here if they see something that speaks to them. They may not be passionate about theater, but they are passionate about the message. I know this. They come in the door and say, ‘I just saw Girl Play and I want to become a subscriber.’” For some companies there have been whispers of exploitation. “’Sordid Lives’ did have the actor nude in the advertising,” said Goldyn. “But he was never nude onstage. What can I say?

Male Member with a Mind of Its Own By J.W. Arnold

S

ince the beginning of time, men have been accused of thinking with their dicks instead of their heads. Now, imagine what the infamous male member might have to say to his owner in response. That’s the hilarious gist of new plays being premiered this month in South Florida. Presented by Anagram Entertainment and Empire Stage, Michael Matteo’s play, “An Evening with Mister Johnson – The Penis Diatribes” will be presented in two versions, “It’s Hard Being a Dick” and “It’s Harder Being a Gay Dick,” beginning Thursday, Sept. 8. Compared to “The Vagina Monologues,” Matteo’s play explores the relationship between man and his “best friend,” explains co-producer Nate Sykes. But, unlike the “Monologues,” this show has a plot, a beginning, middle and climax—pardon the pun, “although the guys playing the penises might feel differently,” Sykes chuckles. Originally written as a story about a straight relationship, a gay version was drafted soon after the premiere. Both will be presented in rotation in Fort Lauderdale, with the straight version on Thurs-

days and Saturdays and the gay version on Fridays and Sundays. “There are not a lot of differences outside of the obvious. Straight relationships and gay relationships are similar. They have the same dynamics. The only difference is you have double the estrogen with women and double the testosterone with men,” Sykes says. “As a result, the plays end up being very different because of the emotional reactions.” The story follows a man who is in an unsatisfying relationship. On Christmas Eve, he finds himself caught by Grandma in a compromising position with his boyfriend’s/ girlfriend’s cousin. Fast forward a week to New Year’s Eve and he’s moping around when his penis walks in the door and proclaims, “Excuse me, I was just doing my job.” Sykes is quick to point out there is no male nudity in either version and no penis costumes, either: “I hate to stoop to swinging dick around the stage to put butts in seats. This is an adult show, and to be Freudian about it, the penis is really an ‘id’….he refers to himself as the referee between the head and the heart.” He adds, “It’s a cute piece of fluff. There’s not a lot of depth (to the plot). We’re in a

time when people want comedy and they want to laugh. They are more apt to come to something that will make them laugh than something that would make them want to go home and slash their wrists.” Over the past two years, Empire Stage has nurtured a strong following in the Fort Lauderdale gay community, but Sykes hopes straight audiences will also embrace “Mister Johnson” the way gay audiences have in other cities. “It’s definitely a word of mouth kind of piece,” he says, “and we’re hoping to get the word out. A lot of people in South Florida wait until that night to decide if they want to go out, so it makes for some sleepless nights and compulsive Internet chatting.”

VIEWS OF THE NEWS

Gay Community Should Be More Tolerant of Opposing Views

A

From photographer Tony Adams: It’s Fashion Week in New York City, and like a school of minnows, the cameras surged toward every shiny person crossing Lincoln Center Plaza, as aficionados, models, designers and just plain folks with flair gracefully accepted the scrutiny.

From photographer JR Davis: Our friends at the AIDS Health Care Foundation have advertised Magic Johnson’s clinics and his fight against HIV here in our newspaper regularly, but AHF takes it to a new level this month, with huge billboards on South and North Federal Highway at the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport. You can learn more about the Magic Johnson Foundation at magicclinics.org

s a gay citizen of Broward County I am appalled at the racism, intolerance and bigotry displayed by a community that is itself so very often a target of such disgusting behaviors. Have we learned nothing since Stonewall about discrimination? Really?

So, now must everyone must have the same political beliefs or be silenced? These are tactics used by thugs and bullies. Should we now act like the very people we worked tirelessly to pass hate crime bills against?
We are now the LGBT discriminators! Tolerance be dammed unless you agree with us 100 percent!

We should all be ashamed that a few nasty queens in our gay community have given all of us a black eye. (No pun intended) Who the hell died and made a few vocal, radical people the arbiters of what now constitutes political discourse. You obnoxious few activists should one and all be writing apologies to all the honest business people who will be tarred with this community’s broad brush of intolerance with ugly racial overtones.

U.S. Representative Allen West is a veteran who proudly served his country, at the very least the LGBT community owes him respect for defending our very freedom(s). The vitriol directed an African American member of our community who simply has a different political opinion is beyond the pale!

It is a shame that Michael Rajner has chosen to divide our LGBT community, however it is quite consistent with the ideals of his leader President Obama, the great divider.

We ask for tolerance and acceptance and yet pull out the welcome mat from someone who was elected by our very own district. How dare our LGBT community ever ask for respect and acceptance when we have shown only contempt for this very principle?

We all owe West the respect due his office, regardless of his views.

I am truly ashamed of this LGBT community turned lynch mob! You should be as well.

Gay Theater Flourishes continued from page 19

Sex sells.” Empire Stage’s Gordon, who lives in New York with his wife, Lucy Caracappa, has even read a blog that questioned whether a straight man had any business producing plays targeting a gay audience with some admittedly lurid advertising images. “With ‘Sex & Violence’ the poster had a bare chest in high heels and fishnets with a chain saw and lots of blood,” Gordon said. “Obviously we were targeting a specific audience. That was me by the way. With ‘Making Porn’ it had a photo of a clapper over my private parts and nothing else. “Of course I know a lot of people think I’m

just a straight guy taking advantage of the gay audience,” he said. “But when I was first starting years ago in New York, I was a really novice actor. I had a nice body. Gay theater was there to give me an opportunity — mainly because of my body — when I needed one.” Elam, the actress, thinks there will come a time when “gay theater” will not be a separate category. “As society changes, all these little things that divide us will go away, but it will take time. And we just have to wait.”

I

was born in Jacksonville in 1982, to a man with obviously more on his mind than his family. I guess that’s what happens when you have a kid at 19 and you’re in The Coast Guard Drug Enforcement. With my father always gone, saving America from drug dealers, I was left alone with my mother. She decided early into their marriage this was not the life for her. With all the stress of raising a son alone, and having no father around, she turned to a life of cocaine and heroin. Once my father found out about her addiction, he divorced her, and moved us to Hawaii, “to start a fresh life,” in his own clairvoyant way of saying. So we tried. After a while my dad found a new wife, and things were looking up. But after he and his new wife took their vows, she decided it would be better if she started her own family. And that’s exactly what they did. So back to Florida I went. I was stunned. My father told me I had to live with my mother. Big mistake. I ended up living with her for about a year, while my dad, his new wife, and their new baby, moved to Georgia. Well, my mother found this out and decided it was time for us to pay my dad a visit. What I didn’t know at the time was that this was all a part of a fiendish plan to get rid of me so she could get back to shooting dope. She told me we were going to Busch Gardens. But this is what really happened: we stopped at my dad’s house for a visit him and everything went well untill we said our goodbyes. Once we got in to our car to leave my mother handed me a note and told me to go to the door and hand my dad the note. So I did. While I was knocking on the door my

28

mother threw my luggage out the car and sped away. Her last words to me were, “Give this to your dad and get out.” Now at 4 and half years old I was smart, even for a youngster, so I knew what had just happened and started to cry. I cried not just because I was abandoned by my mother, to a father who hated me, but because I knew inside my heart it would be the last time I would ever see her. And I was right. Shortly after that incident my dad told me my mother had died of a cocaine/heroin overdose. My dad said it with such a ‘hahaha’ in his voice. I knew I was on my own from that point. At 17, I ran away, and came to Fort Lauderdale on my own. It was a life changing moment for me, because in Lauderdale as a young boy, you are either in the money or sleeping with it. Alone and homeless, I turned to a more exotic way of life. During this time I learned something about myself I would have never found out living the straight and narrow life with my father. I found that I liked sleeping with men, and living a gay lifestyle. I’ve been in Fort Lauderdale for ten years making small changes to my life for the better ever since. Not only that, but I found a man I love and that loves me back. Father is taking it better now that he is getting older. I’ve learned that life isn’t about money, or power, but about love. Loving yourself, loving life, and loving everyone. And also about working a job responsibly and doing it well. That’s where I think I am today, and that’s my story up to this point. I am confident about my future and I am not going to let my past hold me back.

Controversy Over Florida Teacher’s Anti-Gay Comments Continues

A

s reported last week, Florida teacher Jerry Buell of Mount Dora High School in Lake County was suspended for three days of the new school year pending an investigation of some anti-gay marriage comments he posted on Facebook. Here’s what Buell wrote: “I’m watching the news, eating dinner, when the story about the New York okaying same sex unions came on and I almost threw up. And now they showed two guys kissing after their announcement. If they want to call it a union, go ahead. But don’t insult a man and woman’s marriage by throwing it in the same cesspool of whatever. God will not be mocked. When did this sin become acceptable?” Buell was reinstated after the investigation determined he had a right to voice his opinion on his personal Facebook page. Rather than subsiding though, the controversy is continuing after students have come forward claiming Buell’s anti-gay bias

did not end on his Facebook page. A number of those students say his anti-gay behavior was also brought into the classroom, which prompted serious concerns from a multitude of individuals and organizations. Brian Blaise, an honors student, remembers one of Buell’s anti-gay rants. “I looked up when he said he supported gays in the military, stunned by the answer. He immediately followed that comment with the statement that we should then put them on the front lines, and pull back!” Blaise recalled. “Among several things hung around the classroom room, Bible verses were spread across the walls, accented by a picture of Jesus Christ above the clock.” Another of Buell’s students recounted him invoking the quote “A pig in a tuxedo is still a pig” to declare his disdain for recognizing gay relationships. “I teach and lead my students as if Lake County Schools had hired Jesus Christ him-

Don’t Be Afraid to Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

T

he religious parents of a gay man are coming from the Bible Belt to see their gay son get married on Fire Island in a few weeks. I called them in advance to walk them through the ceremony at which I’ll be officiating. They later called their son to say how much they appreciated being prepared for what the event would look and feel like. Their anxiety was lower. When we leave our comfort zones, as this mom and dad are doing by departing the security of their heterosexual, southern lives to travel north to one of the gay Meccas of the world, two things usually happen to us. We initially feel anxious about the unknown and how we’re going to find our footing, and we realize that we have the opportunity to grow in ways otherwise not possible. As anyone who has traveled to a foreign country can attest, the fear of the unknown passes when we begin to feel safe. When we learn a few words of the language, and get back smiles for our efforts, or when we enjoy the spicy food rather than get sick from it, we start to see that we are not personally threatened, and we’re able to open ourselves up to new experiences. We can then expand our knowledge and understanding of different ways of being or thinking in our lifetime. But, though stimulating, risk taking can be exhausting, and ultimately, there’s no place like home. After awhile, we long for the comfort of the familiar. The loving and proud parents from Savannah will have a great time at their son’s wedding, especially now that they know what to expect, but when it’s over, they won’t long to stay in the Pines. A couple of days ago, I had a 52-year-old gay man on my boat in Provincetown who had read all of my gay affirmation books, but was not yet out to his parents. He was afraid of leaving the comfort zone of his closet, and of forcing them to leave theirs. I urged him to confirm for them what they

probably already know, so that their relationships with each other could be honest, and therefore possibly intimate. It is scary to shake things up, but it can also be lifetransforming. In this case, coming out to his parents would not be like going to a wedding on Fire Island because once he’d taken the step into honest living, he couldn’t go back to the comfort of his former life. In a couple of days, I’m doing a webinar for the national workplace organization, Out and Equal, on how best to do training on LGBT issues. I assert that attendance at diversity training needs to be mandated, because if attendance is voluntary, many people who most need the education won’t come. Why would they leave their comfort zones if they didn’t have to? Forcing people to experience something they would prefer not to know about makes it far more difficult to open them up to new thinking than it would if their participation was voluntary. But it can still be life transforming -- if it is done with respect, awareness, and good humor, which I tried to show the parents of my gay friend. It’s been my experience that corporate executives are generally very happy that they were required to attend my presentations because they consistently say they learned something important that they would have otherwise avoided. But changes in attitude don’t come easily. Growing pains are often avoided if possible. Therefore, successful diversity training in a corporation requires that the executives and employees be exposed to LGBT issues more than once. Becoming truly familiar with the unfamiliar requires frequent exposure. My friend’s southern Christian parents need not go back to Fire Island for them to love their son, but they will never be able to make Fire Island feel like home, unless they go there more than once. When my boat companion comes out to his folks,

it won’t be enough for them to understand how he is different from what they expected from a straight son. They will need consistent help in understanding his life, or they will otherwise tuck the knowledge of his homosexuality into a small drawer in their comfort zone. As I recently explained over an iced, decaf, skinny, extra mocha latte to a young straight financial advisor who spoke of his work with wealthy gay clients, straight people need constant exposure to gay people if they are to forever leave what was once the safe world of heterosexual privilege. In order for straight men and women to feel at home with gay and lesbian people, they need to understand and reject heterosexist assumptions, such as heterosexuality being nature’s intention. Additionally, the young, straight wealth manager needed to be comfortable with people assuming that he was gay. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Gay and lesbian people need more than occasional encounters with transgender people in order for them to be completely at ease with the continuum of gender identity and gender expression. In reaction to heterosexual bullying, many gay men and women have created comfort zones that exclude non-traditional expressions of gen-

der. To fully embrace their own transgender nature, gay and lesbian people need to let go of the security that came with identifying themselves as “real men,” and “real women.” They will otherwise never be dependable allies to transgender people. Being single and inviting people to dinner, dating someone not your type, reading an op ed piece written by a Republican, eating vegetables as a main course, not being home for Christmas, sitting next to a priest or rabbi on an airplane, coming out to your folks, going against your will to a diversity class, and telling friends about attending the wedding of your gay son, can unnerve us. But, that’s the best reason we should do them. There are many foreign experiences we would rather avoid, but repeatedly exposing ourselves to the things that scare us is guaranteed to make us grow into happier, healthier people, with more places and people with whom we feel comfortable. Brian McNaught is an educator on the issues facing LGBT people. Since 1974, he’s been working primarily with heterosexual audiences in corporate and college settings helping people to better understand the unique challenges and opportunities faced by gay people. Sebastian’s Picks for the week. By A. Sebastian Fortino

Top Shelf Telegrams Grooming Camo Concealer – this man-friendly make-up by Mënaji Skincare is the world’s first concealer made with jojoba & other natural ingredients such as kaolin & beeswax. Normally I scoff at men wearing make-up, unless one counts the “retro-glam phase” of my college years & my…times in drag. However, there are some mornings when you didn’t get enough sleep because you had two deadlines to complete the day before & the bags under your eyes aren’t…from Prada. It’s mornings like this when you nick yourself shaving. It’s only then you realize you have an important meeting, interview or client. On those mornings you reach for the remarkably light, easy to blend Camo Concealer. The product is a favorite of lifestyle guru Colin Cowie, who discovered it in time for summer weddings, where he handed it to grooms who were not looking…freshly groomed. The matte-finish allows it to cover up any nick, flaw or circle on your face. No one will know the difference. In fact…I’ve used it under my eyes the past two days at work & no one had any idea! This cover-up stick is available at Nordstrom’s in light, medium & bronze.

Noshing Shrimp & Avocado Cups – are a light, refreshing way to serve avocado. Many versions of this dish require mayonnaise. However, avocado is already rich so… skip the mayo. This dish, which my French host mother taught me as an exchange student at the age of 15, taught me a few simple ingredients can make the most decadent dish. Dice a medium purple onion & 12 cherry tomatoes in half, set aside – take two medium avocadoes, cut lengthwise in half, remove seed – using a tablespoon scoop out most of the flesh, leaving only a thin layer to give the skin some weight – in a large bowl mash avocado flesh with 2 tbs of extra virgin olive oil & 3 cloves of garlic which you have put through a press – add in 1 cup of cooked, peeled shrimp, the onion & tomatoes, 2 tbs of cilantro or flatleaf parsley, one teaspoon of sea salt & fresh grated black pepper to taste – combine well – scoop into the 4 avocado halves. Garnish with a lemon wedge & cilantro sprig. If serving as an appetizer, serve 1 avocado half per guest, as an entrée serve 2 halves with a spinach salad & a citrus vinaigrette. For wine select a chardonnay or chenin blanc – enjoy!

Reading A Funny Time to be Gay, Hilarious Gay & Lesbian Comedy Routines by Ed Karovski, Jr. – it’s also a great time to reissue a book…electronically, although, on Amazon.com there are still plenty of hard copies. In the 1990s being a gay comic was not only accepted but often encouraged, especially with the famous 1997 episode of Ellen in which Mrs. de Rossi came out on TV. The book offers brief bios of about 30 comics, followed by a transcription of some of their routines, songs, or humorous writing. Bob Smith’s transcribed appearance on The Tonight Show will make you laugh out loud. He came out to his parents by asking his mother to “pass the gravy to a homosexual.” When his mother handed the gravy boat to his father a “terrible scene followed.” Metina Bevis describes the agony of a break-up… with yourself. “And breaking up with yourself is not as easy as you may think. I stalked myself in bars. I would call myself at all hours. It just got worse: I kept driving by my house to see if I was home!” However, what’s amazing about this book is that it’s held up since its initial publication 14 years ago, this is humor that stands the test of time. In sum, and borrowing from Karovski’s intro, “a funny thing happened on the way out of the closet” for LGBT comedians.

Watching Gun Hill Road – is a new film starring Esai Morales, Judy Reyes & introducing Harmony Santana, a 20-year-old transgender artist & actor. This movie is a touching depiction of a family facing changes. Enrique, played by Morales, returns home after serving a three- year prison sentence. Things are not the way he left them, his wife Angela, played by Reyes is wrapped up in an affair. His son, in a gripping performance by Santana, no longer likes baseball and instead identifies as Vanessa, his female persona. The distance of three years is depicted touchingly in one scene. When Enrique & Angela first make love he refuses to kiss her – although she longs for such tenderness. The film opens this week at the Gateway Theatre on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale & will surely be counted among the top LGBTfilms of 2011. Call (954) 763-7994 for show times.
