rine Brown and Kathy Castor; South Florida Democrats Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Alcee Hastings,Ted Deutch; and Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. “It makes a huge difference to have Republicans on board, and I’m really excited about that,” McDermott told The Huffington Post. “As a physician, I traveled in Africa in ‘87 to ‘88, and I saw the disease firsthand, and what it was doing. But when I came to Congress [in

1989], no one was talking about this, and it was a gay man’s disease as far as anyone was concerned. I started a task force in Congress to address it in 1992, but it was tough to get people interested, and until today we didn’t have anyone on the other side.” This is the first time Democrats and Republicans have come together in a bipartisan fashion to create a group to combat AIDS. Besides Ileana Ros-Lehtinen two other Republicans have also joined the caucus. In total 59 congressmen and women have joined. The National Minority AIDS Council released a statement praising the decision. “Our nation’s response to HIV/ AIDS has reached a critical turning point,” said Deputy Executive Director Daniel C. Montoya. “The formation of the bipartisan Congressional HIV/ AIDS Caucus is an important step in ensuring that Congress does not lose sight of the impact their decisions could have on the more than one million Americans living with HIV/AIDS and the very real potential that their actions could bring an end to this 30 year struggle.”

SFGN BRIEFS By Associated Press

LA schools anti-bullying program promotes gays LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles school board has approved an anti-bullying program that promotes positive images of homosexuals and their contributions in the classroom. The Los Angeles Daily News says Tuesday’s resolution directs Los Angeles Unified School District officials to come up with an implementation plan within 90 days. District human relations coordinator Judy Chiasson says schools have always been leaders in social justice. The California Legislature earlier approved a law requiring school districts to include the contributions of LGBT Americans in their social studies curriculum. Chiasson says the Los Angeles program could mean middle school students studying history would learn about San Francisco gay rights leader Harvey Milk. And elementary school students with same-sex parents could be allowed to make two Mother’s or Father’s Day cards.

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain

Testimony: Cain campaign concealed gay aide’s role By Ryan J. Foley Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- A former staffer for Herman Cain’s presidential campaign says aides tried to conceal its link to an adviser who had been ousted as leader of a gay pride group in Wisconsin amid financial scandal. Cain’s former Iowa straw poll coordinator, Kevin Hall, made the allegation in testimony seeking unemployment benefits. An administrative law judge ruled last week that Hall resigned after the campaign tried to get him involved in the alleged cover-up. Hall testified that some Cain supporters in Iowa were concerned about senior adviser Scott Toomey’s history with the Madison Pride Board, which removed him as treasurer in 2008 after discovering financial discrepancies. Hall says Iowa staffers were instructed to tell anyone who asked that Toomey was no longer involved with the campaign, which wasn’t true.

n 2005, at the behest of community members trying to reach the gay market in South Florida, Compass investigated the possibility of creating a gay chamber of commerce in Palm Beach County. The chamber in Miami had become very successful as a focal point for LGBT and LGBT-friendly businesses to the south. “Why not do that up here?” asked several Compass supporters. Compass staff researched the project and discovered that the tax structure of a chamber is complex and not complementary to a non-profit status. “It was a mess that we didn’t need to step into,” said Julie Seaver, the current Director of Development who was not with Compass at the time. “But staff came up with another idea and that was the Pride Business Alliance (PBA) which, for tax purposes, could be just another community

outreach program of Compass, Inc.” Seaver mentioned that she’d joined Compass in 2007 in large part due to the fact that PBA connections had helped her find a therapist and an attorney when she needed help ending a traditional marriage complicated by a business partnership and a young daughter. “I was really desperate to find someone who understood the issues gay people face at these times and Compass PBA helped. That’s when I knew I wanted to work here.” Another story Seaver shared from PBA archives involved a lesbian couple who called Compass for a referral for a plumber before the PBA was launched. The volunteer on the phone that day gave the caller the contact information for a plumber he had used in the past. What he didn’t know was the plumber was a homophobe and when he realized he was working for a lesbian couple g he stopped working, packed his tools and

GLBT community due our involvement with Compass and PBA,” said charter member Rick Rose. “And there could be more. We have also utilized services there. left a completely disassembled kitchen sink and a frightened client who didn’t know what might happen next. “That’s why we need a source for gay and gay-friendly services,” said Seaver. “You just don’t know who you might be letting into your home.” PBA was launched in 2006, thanks in part to a grant from then sponsor Wachovia (now Wells Fargo Bank). The first mixer was held at Grandview Gardens Bed & Breakfast hosted by owners Rick Rose and Peter Emmerich. Over 50 people showed up for that event and many charter members signed up that evening. Today, monthly mixers are held generally on the third Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 hosted by a different business every month. “We can move the date for the mixers if they conflict with other events going on in the community,” said Seaver. “We also try to support member organizations events with raffles, gifts and announcements.” Host companies provide food and beverages and people socialize and get to know one another. Around 7 pm, a Compass staff member becomes an MC and welcomes attendees. New members are announced and introduced to the group and attendees are invited to make announcements of general interest. The host company gets the floor to do a presentation on its products and services and the evening ends with more socializing. Meetings have been held in an automobile dealership, a body shop, a glass art studio, a

church, a nightclub, a restaurant, a designer furnishings store, an accountant’s office and more. “Some spaces are easier to work than others,” said Seaver. “But the people really like getting to know one another and sharing information about their businesses and themselves.” In addition to the monthly mixers, PBA membership entitles members to a listing on the website, www.gaypalmbeaches.com as well as inclusion in the annual Pride Guide that reaches over 15,000 people each year. Members may display brochures and posters on “Main Street” in the Center (outside the Youth Room) and have announcements included in Compass’ weekly e-newsletter. Membership is $125 per year for individuals and non-profits and $250 for corporations. To learn more or to sign up visit www.gaypalmbeaches.com.

LGBT Movement Advancing with Age

New study shows a wide gap between younger and older generations in regard to gay rights By Chuck Colbert Keen News Service

A

new national report provides data to back up what many have sensed for a long time: that the positive shift in America’s attitudes toward equal rights for LGBT people has a lot to do with age. There is a 20-point gap between so-called “millennials” (adults 18 to 29 years old) and “seniors” (ages 65 and older) on a range of LGBT issues, including marriage, civil unions, adoption, and protections for employment discrimination. That generation gap is the major finding in a report released August 29 by Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), a nonprofit, non-partisan research and education organization, located in Washington, D. C. And the generation gap on marriage equality is especially eye opening. Support for same-sex marriage among millennials has reached 62 percent, but among seniors, it is only 31 percent. “It is certainly impossible to understand current public opinion on rights for gay and lesbian Americans without understanding the steady upward trend in support, which actually includes an acceleration over the last two years,” said Robert P. Jones, PRRI’s chief executive officer and leading author of the report, during a telephone conference call. In 2011, public opinion polls for the first time began showing a slim majority of people in support of allowing same-sex couples to marry. And over the past five years, public support for marriage equality has registered double-digit increases. “When you look at the overall trends, broader context, and the strongly supportive attitudes, particularly among the millennial generation,” said Jones, “it suggests that we will look back at 2011 as a year marking the sea change for gay and lesbian issues, a change that is largely driven by Americans ages 18 to 29.” The PRRI report, Generations at Odds: The Millennial Generation and the Future of Gay and Lesbian Rights, is based on a random sample survey of 3,000 English and Spanish language telephone interviews (1,000 of which were to cell phones), conducted between July 14 and July 30. The margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points for the

overall sample and plus or minus 4.5 percentage points for the sample of 18 to 29 year olds. It is one of the largest public opinion surveys on religion and gay issues ever conducted. The Arcus Foundation, which works to advance LGBT equality, funded the survey. The report notes that the independent findings of the study are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the views of Arcus. Millennials and seniors are indeed a generation at odds. As the report states, “It is difficult to find another issue on which there is a deeper generational disagreement than on the issue of homosexuality and rights for gay and lesbian people.” The report highlights other key findings, including that the generation gap on same-sex marriage is “striking and persists even among conservative religious and political groups.” For example, 44 percent of white young evangelicals favor marriage equality compared to 19 percent of white evangelicals overall and only 12 percent of white evangelical seniors.

Joining Jones on the teleconference call to release the survey results were Daniel Cox, PRRI’s director of research; Karlyn Bowman, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute; and Laura Olson, a professor of political science at Clemson University all of whom offered observations on key findings. Cox pointed out that, in addition to age, four other powerfully important predictors that a person will oppose marriage equality are holding a literal interpretation of the Bible, attending religious services at least once a week, identifying as a political conservative, and being a white evangelical Protestant. Professor Olson said one likely explanation for the millennials support for marriage equality and equal rights for gays is the “exposure hypothesis.” “Young people today know gay people or they feel they know someone gay,” said Olson. “They see gay people who are portrayed by the media in importantly positive ways Ellen Degeneres, characters on TV shows, reality shows, the movies.” “Social science research indicates that the more exposure one has to a person with a characteristic different from their own,” said Olson, “the more likely that person is to be accepting of that characteristic.” “Proximity” to gay people also leads to “increased tolerance or acceptance,” added Bowman. The bottom line? The younger generation’s familiarity with gay people bodes well for the future of the LGBT civil rights movement. “The relationship younger Americans have with gay and lesbian people is not going to change as they get a mortgage, raise kids, and attend religious services in higher rates,” said Jones. And the survey also shows that “a number of people are willing to draw a line …making a distinction between support for public policy and what they believe in their own personal or religious lives,” said Jones. Thirty-nine percent of Americans say sex between two adults of the same gender is morally acceptable, according to the PRRI report, but even more (47 percent) favor allowing gay people to marry and 64 percent say gay and lesbian relationships should be accepted by society.

The survey also found that the majority of respondents in two major American religious groups white mainline Protestants (51 percent) and Catholics (52 percent) favor samesex marriage. But most black Protestants (60 percent) and most white evangelicals (76 percent) strongly oppose marriage equality. Sixty-seven percent of non-Christian religiously affiliated Americans a category that includes Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and other smaller non-Christians favor same-sex marriage. The survey found that most Americans believe it is difficult to live openly gay, but they also believe more lesbian and gay people “coming out” is a good thing for society. Sixty-nine percent of millennials say that religious groups alienate young people by being too judgmental about gay and lesbian people. But only 37 percent of seniors agree. More than six in ten Americans believe that negative messages from America’s houses of worship contribute to higher rates of suicide among gay youth. continued on page 35

Poll

By Laurie Kellman and Jennifer Agiesta Associated Press

W

ASHINGTON (AP) Barbara Von Aspern loves her daughter, “thinks the world” of the person her daughter intends to marry and believes the pair should have the same legal rights as anyone else. It pains her, but Von Aspern is going to skip their wedding. Her daughter, Von Aspern explains, is marrying another woman. “We love them to death, and we love them without being judgmental,” the 62-year-old Chandler, Ariz., retiree said. “But the actual marriage I cannot agree with.” It’s complicated, this question of legitimizing gay marriage. Americans are grappling with it from their homes to the halls of government in the shadow of a presidential election next year. The ambivalence is reflected in a new poll that shows the nation is passionate, conflicted and

8

narrowly split on same-sex marriage. Fifty-three percent of the 1,000 adults surveyed believe the government should give legal recognition to marriages between couples of the same sex, about the same as last year, according to the nationwide telephone poll by The Associated Press and the National Constitution Center. Forty-four percent were opposed. People are similarly conflicted over what, if anything, the government should do about the issue. Support for legal recognition of same-sex marriage has shifted in recent years, from a narrow majority opposed in 2009 to narrow majority support now. Some of the shift stems from a generational divide, with the new poll showing a majority of Americans under age 65 in favor of legal recognition for same-sex marriages, and a majority of seniors opposed. In some places, government has moved ahead while the nation debates. New York

in July became the sixth state, along with the District of Columbia, to legalize samesex marriage. Still, the issue played a part in the special election Tuesday to replace disgraced former Rep. Anthony Weiner, DN.Y. Democrat David Weprin’s support for gay marriage cost him support among the district’s Orthodox Jews, and he lost to Republican Bob Turner. Also Tuesday, lawmakers in North Carolina, the only state in the Southeast that does not have language in its constitution banning gay marriage, voted to put the question on the 2012 ballot. Most Americans who live in states where gay marriage is not already legal say it is unlikely their state will pass such a law; just 20 percent think it is likely to become law in their state. Americans also are conflicted on how to go about legalizing or outlawing gay marriage. One option is banning gay marriage by constitutional amendment. About half of the poll’s respondents, 48 percent, said they would favor such an amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman. Most who feel this way do so intensely. About 40 percent would strongly favor such a change. Forty-three percent said they would oppose such an amendment, and 8 percent were neutral, according to the poll. Most, 55 percent, believe the issue should be handled at the state level, however, and opinions on how states should act are split. People are about evenly divided on whether their states should allow same-sex marriages; 42 percent favor that and 45 percent are opposed and tilt in favor of state laws that allow gay couples to form civil unions, 47 percent in favor, 38 percent opposed and 13 percent neutral, according to the poll.

“The different moral standards in different areas, probably, are the biggest reason that same-sex marriages are an issue,’’ said Dale Shoemaker, 54, a military retiree from Boise, Idaho. If gay couples who want to get married live in a state that doesn’t allow it, they can move to one that does, he said. Either way, gay couples “should have benefits,’’ Shoemaker said. “If they’re living together and cohabitating and are a couple, (they should have) the insurance and retirement and that type of thing, the monetary benefits.’’ Nearly 6 in 10 (57 percent) in the poll shared Shoemaker’s take when it comes to government benefits. They said same-sex couples should be entitled to the same legal benefits as married couples of the opposite sex. Forty percent felt the government should distinguish between them. The poll did uncover some inequities. It suggests, for example, that opponents of same-sex marriage were far more apt to say that the issue is one of deep importance to them. Forty-four percent of those polled called it extremely or very important for them personally. Among those who favor legal marriage for gay couples, 32 percent viewed the issue as that important. Von Aspern is an example of an American whose opposition to gay marriage is deep and abiding. It’s based on her religion -- she is Mormon -- and as such it overrode other considerations when it came to her daughter’s wedding. “It was very difficult,’’ Von Aspern says. “We had to bring them to the house and hug them and love them and tell them these things and not let that keep us apart.’’

Jesse’s Journal

GLAAD Must Start Choosing Its Battles Carefully By Jesse Monteagudo

T

he political website HuffingtonPost.com published an article August 30 about gay lifestyles by Amanda M. Fairbanks, apparently a heterosexual woman. Titled “Sex For Tuition: Gay Male College Students Using ‘Sugar Daddies’ To Pay Off Loan Debt,” the article featured a photo of a handsome Daddy and an equally attractive twink cuddling in bed. According to Fairbanks, “an increasing number of gay male students have . . . taken to the web in the past several years searching for wealthy benefactors. While young gay men exchanging sex for money certainly predated the financial collapse, recent events have pushed some students to consider engaging in risky behavior that in more robust economic times might have been unthinkable, according to several owners of websites that broker such hook‑ups. The rise in the number of straight and gay college students moonlighting as ‘sugar babies’ occurs at a time when the life plan of many 20‑somethings have taken a brutal detour.” As a frequent visitor to the Huffington Post, I read Fairbanks’ article the day it was posted and thought nothing of it. This was not the case with the folks at GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which issued a “Call to Action: Tell Huffington Post To Stop Masquerading Anti‑Gay Stereotypes As Journalism.” “Fairbanks and her interview subjects play into several alarming and dangerous stereotypes about the LGBT community ‑ completely unchallenged,” read the GLAAD press release. “This level of carelessness is surprising, given the Huffington Post’s track record of commendable coverage of LGBT issues,” said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD. “It feeds into very outdated stereotypes, ignores the broad range of people from our community with many healthy and loving families and uses a few individuals to make sweeping and degrading generalizations about the gay community. It’s shoddy journalism.” GLAAD urged LGBT community members to “take action and let the Huffington Post know that they should not stand be-

hind this careless and derogatory approach to journalism.” What did Fairbanks write that was so horrible? Fairbanks interviewed Brandon Wade, founder of the hook‑up website SeekingArrangement.com, who told her that “the gay community were really the first to embrace the sugar lifestyle, even more so than the straight community.” Fairbanks herself added that, “unlike in the straight world, many say they find working as an escort on the gay scene to be an accepted, even applauded practice. And unlike the young women engaged in similar behavior who reported feeling great shame and remorse, the men generally seemed less traumatized by their decision. In fact, they often feel emboldened by the money they were able to earn, rather than shamed by the stigma.” She makes reference to Christian Grov, assistant professor of public health at Brooklyn College, who “finds the gay culture more accepting of one‑night stands and casual relationships.”So what’s wrong with that? Escorts, one‑night stands and casual relationships are more acceptable in the LGBT community (or at least the male part) than in the hetero‑sexual mainstream. So are public nudity, pornography and open relationships. By denouncing Fairbanks’ article, GLAAD seems to presume that our community shares in the heterosexual mainstream’s prejudice against any form of “sex” that is not justified by “love.” We might want the world to think that the LGBT community consists mostly of happy, monogamous couples, with or without children. But wanting something does not mean that it actually exists. We should accept and celebrate our LGBT community in all its diversity, not try to pigeonhole it into a socially‑acceptable “lifestyle.” This does not justify Fairbanks’ use of generalizations, as when she quotes “sugar baby” Jake’s opinion that, “in the gay scene, all you really have is your age or your money.” This has not been a good year for GLAAD. Earlier this year, it sent a letter to the FCC endorsing a proposed merger between communications giants AT&T and T‑Mobile. This was seen by many to be a conflict of interest, since GLAAD board member

Huffington Post article on sex for tuition.

Troup Coronado was also a lobbyist for AT&T. This led to the resignation of GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios and eight GLAAD board members (including Coronado) before GLAAD withdrew support for the merger and took a stand in favor of net neutrality. But GLAAD is not over. It has since recovered enough to lead the charge against homophobic rapper Tyler the Creator after

he won Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards. GLAAD also called out comedian Chelsea Handler when she mocked transgender activist Chaz Bono on Dancing With The Stars. There is still a place for GLAAD in the LGBT community, but it must choose its battles carefully. For all its faults, Huffington Post is our friend. We already have too many enemies.

On Death and Whales

W

ith the wake of my boat, I rang the channel bell for Andy Whitfield, the thirtynine-year-old star of Spartacus: Blood and Sand who died that day of lymphoma. The clanging of the giant old bell was a message to the heavens of my thanks to Andy for the pleasure he brought me in his role as the famed gladiator, and of my loving thoughts to his wife and two small children. A short while later, after I rounded the Race Point lighthouse, thinking of death, sad with the signs of summer’s end, and perplexed by my need to make changes in some of my relationships, I turned off the boat’s engine and stretched out in the sun. I hoped to be lulled to sleep by the gentle rocking of the boat. I then started to think about an email I had received that morning from a young mother who had decided to separate from

her husband. She said that she wanted the same love that she saw in Ray’s and my relationship. She didn’t want to settle for less. She was lonely in her marriage and had decided to move on. I had replied to her, “You are making a courageous decision. Do your best to do it with great love, and without closing any doors. We all need the time and space to make decisions, and the opportunity to change our minds.” As I pondered the significance of my friend’s decision and its possible thematic connection to the death of the Welsh actor Whitfield, and the end of summer, and the volatility of friendships, a handsome whale surfaced next to the boat. The sound of it blowing out air, and the sight of its sleek black body moving gracefully through the water, pulled me into a different realm a place of peace. I was no longer Brian in a boat with heavy things on my mind. I was

in union with the small whale, and with the waves, the soaring seagulls, the warm sun, the pure sand, and the brilliant sky. For the briefest moment, I was a simple but important part of nature’s essence and wonder. But the whale didn’t resurface as I hoped it would, and in time I was forced to come back to the other reality, and my thoughts of death the end of life, the end of a relationship, the end of friendships, and the end of the season. All of it is about letting go, sometimes with a choice and sometimes with no choice. Sometimes it’s final and sometimes it’s not. But, it’s death. This morning, I got an email from a friend and fellow diversity trainer who wanted me to know that she had changed jobs and was now a wealth manager focusing on LGBT people, as she had in her corporate trainings. I think she made a good decision, but only time will tell. I was nevertheless very proud of her, and told her so. She seemed really happy. This afternoon, I took two transsexual women friends for a boat ride to Race Point. Through choppy waters and ocean sprays that soaked us completely, we rang the bell

in honor of their transitions, and we talked of the death they would have endured had they not chosen to fully embrace their female gender identity. Transsexuals cannot live full lives in the gender they were assigned at birth. LGB people in the closet will only experience death. When we reached the lighthouse, our focus was captured by the magnificent sight of a giant sunfish floating joyfully at the water’s surface. For a brief moment, we weren’t a gay man and two transsexual women in a boat. We were lost in peace and awe as three souls that shared life with the sunfish. But, then we headed back to shore, with more talk of making choices. Death brings new life. Letting go of one thing means the possibility of new life with another. Fall follows summer, and in the fall there are experiences I can’t have in the summer. What’s more, summer will return, so there is death, birth, death, and birth with human life, marriages, friendships, seasons, careers, gender transitions, sexual orientations, and all other aspects of our lives. It’s nature’s way. Choosing not to change or to let go can mean death. Staying in a marriage that is not loving is death. Staying in friendships that no longer feed you is death. Staying in a career that no longer interests you is death. Andy Whitfield didn’t have a choice. He wanted to live but death was going to have its way. But if he embraced his death, made peace with it, and let go, he too found life if only in the change of forms. Sometimes, when we’re feeling the weight of these important decisions to stay or to let go and move on, a whale surfaces or a sunfish plays. It’s an unexpected event, or sight, taste, sound, feel, or smell that takes us away from our dilemmas, and allows us to reside in a more peaceful frame of mind. But it doesn’t last long. It’s only a short peek into what’s possible. And then it ends. The moment dies, and then enters the world of someone else to give them peace. It’s important to remember in all of this that even the whales and sunfish must face death, and make decisions that can mean life for them. The Pleasures of Small Town Life

By A. Sebastian Fortino Wilton Manors, known for eateries, bars, and shops lining Wilton Drive offers other amenities, which only small towns can offer. There is a sense of civic pride and fun in towns like this. In fact, SFGN participated in the 20th Annual Island City Canoe Race this past May although we won’t reveal at what number we placed.

“T

he Island City,” once again named a top mailing address for the gay community, maintains several parks and green spaces, several of which are on waterways. There are 17 parks and public facilities ranging in size from the 0.1 acre N. E. De Palma Park, located a block behind the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, to the 8.5 acre Colohatchee Park and the medians on Wilton Drive. In fact there are so many green areas Wilton Manors is considered a Community Wildlife Habitat, certified through the National Wildlife Federation. Residents and businesses can also apply to qualify for

Backyard Habitat status, in which the NWF surveys private property to see if candidates meet criteria to support local wildlife. Parkland is managed by the City of Wilton Manors Leisure Services Department, in their mission to improve the life of residents, those who work here, and visitors. Hagen Park, is located just behind Wilton Manors City Hall. They have a Community Center, available to rent for private events, flanked by a tennis court to improve your serve. On weekends the parking lot hosts a well-attended farmers market. The center also boasts a small, wellequipped municipal gym. “Not many cities have gyms,” said Chris Cooper, Administrative Program Director for the Department of Leisure Services. Cooper, who is earning his masters in public administration and already has a bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation administration, is clearly well-suited to the task. Yet, sourcing funds are always an issue in his line of work. “It’s a challenge to find revenue support-

ing these facilities,” he said. “We opened four years ago and were able to pay off the equipment within three years. Now it’s a new source of revenue for the city that supports the health and well-being of the community.” The gym has 175 members, with reasonable rates for people who live or work in Wilton Manors. Mornings are busiest, but only half-a-dozen people seem to work out at the same time. “It’s great for people who want to work out at a smaller gym,” said Cooper, of the gym. “It’s more private.” If you haven’t heard about the fitness center that’s because Cooper and his staff work without a marketing budget. The Island City Park Preserve, in the Highland Estates section of town, is a large green area along the water boasting a canoe and kayak launch, outdoor pavilions, playground and when I went through the space during the summer a day camp for local children. “This is a transformation for that neighborhood,” said Cooper. “The Island City Park Preserve receives federal funding from the Community Development Block Grant to rehabilitate blighted areas.” The main meeting room can hold about 100 people. As the park is not located on

Wilton Drive, in a quiet residential section of the city, it is a bit more private than the Community Center at Hagen Park. “We strive to make the parks and other amenities integral to life here in the Island City,” Cooper said proudly. “Leisure Services is, ultimately, a direct reflection of what the city can and should be.” In addition to the parks mentioned above Colohatchee Park offers a boat ramp to launch boats into the intercoastal, a dog park, and other amenities including barbeques. Mickel Field is an athletic complex with baseball fields, dugouts, press box and has been home to Wilton Manors Little League since 1995. The Snook Creek Boat Ramp is yet another location for waterway enthusiasts which can accommodate boats up to 17 feet long, and serves as the only access to the water on the west side of the city. Donn Eisele Park also has a floating dock, pavilion offering shade and a butterfly garden. The Island City, it seems is also a City of Parks. Next week SFGN will tour the Wilton Manors Historical Society and the Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve. Visit WiltonManors.com for more information, or be neighborly and drop into the Community Center at Hagen Park for brochures.

supposed to stay private. Instead over the next 18 years more gay men and women in uniform were discharged for being gay than before the policy went in to effect. “It was never applied the way it was intended,” Cooper said. “Service members were supposed to be able to live a private life. They just couldn’t bring it in the work place. The military wasn’t supposed to seek it out.” However, that’s not what happened. Mark Cady saw the arbitrary enforcement first hand and said some in the military have used DADT to retaliate against other members. “It all depended on who was in higher rank,” he said. “One person I know of was in one command and no one cared. Then he got transferred and ended up getting booted out.” Cady, who served in the navy for 12 years, said some areas were more tolerant than others like the U.S. Naval Medical Command. “They would not be able to function without gay and lesbian doctors,” he said. “It was always something overlooked in the medical command.” Cady recently founded Out and Proud Veterans of America in Orlando and serves as the executive director. He celebrated the end of DADT at the Orlando VA medical center. Cady came out to his military officers in 1994 and asked to be discharged because he didn’t believe in the DADT compromise. “I got out in protest,” he said. No one knows for sure how many LGBT service members there are but Gary Gates, a demographer at UCLA’s Williams Institute has been studying the issue for years. The Williams Institute is a leading research institute on sexual orientation and gender identity law and policy. He estimates there to be about 71,000 LGBT active duty members and reservists. He also estimates the military lost about 4,000 people a year because of DADT and the policy cost the military about $364 million because of having to train new people to do the job of the discharged members. “The issue now is will more gay people sign up, or are they more likely now to provide more information,” he said. While Gates doesn’t know what his

institute will be studying next he believes some of the issues in the future will be how the military deals with HIV, partners of LGB service members, and transgender issues. This week’s formal end of the policy is the final nail in the coffin for this discriminatory law. It’s over. There are no more studies that need to be completed, no more votes, no more certifications. Now gays and lesbians can serve openly alongside their heterosexual counterparts for the first time in U.S. history.

Countries that allow gays to serve in the military: This week the United States formally ended Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Below is a list of other countries that allow gays and lesbians to serve. for people throughout their lives.” Dwork was not allowed to draw GI benefits to continue his studies as a young man and was denied medical care in his later years. He said he needs a hearing aid that he cannot afford. Over the years, he filed countless requests with the Navy, traveled to Washington, lobbied lawmakers and hired a law firm to help. The Board for Corrections of Naval Records said it would reinstate Dwork’s benefits retroactively. But exactly what that means — whether, for example, the Navy will write him a check for the benefits he missed out on over a lifetime — is unclear, his attorney said. The son of open-minded, liberal parents, Dwork grew up in Kansas City, Mo. He said he realized at 18 that he was gay and had his first serious relationship soon afterward with a man he met while studying at the Kansas City Institute of Art. Both joined the Navy hospital corps in 1943. “I had heard that the hospital corps was simpatico to gay people,” Dwork said. “Being in the hospital, you took care of people who were in trouble.” While working at the Marine base on Parris Island, S.C., Dwork sent letters to his boyfriend, stationed in New Orleans, declaring in one: “I love you, love you, love you incessantly.” But after his gay friends warned him to be careful, he stopped writing love letters. Later, Dwork was sitting in class, training to be an officer at the University of South Carolina at Columbia, when MPs showed up, whispered something in his instructor’s ear and marched him out of the room. His teacher told the class that if he were Dwork’s father, he would cut off Dwork’s genitals. He was thrown in the brig, then transferred to a psychiatric ward in Charleston, S.C., where he said he spent a couple of weeks being peppered with “stupid” questions.

“This patient is a 22-year-old male who keeps his robe tightly wrapped around him and speaks in a slightly effeminate manner,” the doctors wrote in their report. They said Dwork took an “avid interest in female attire, household furnishings and shopping.” Dwork said he had assumed his love letters had fallen into the wrong hands and led to his discharge. After he recently learned the truth, he contacted his former boyfriend, who had long ago married and had children. The man did not want to discuss the matter, Dwork said. Dwork said he does not blame his former boyfriend; he said the young man was pressured into giving up names as part of a “witch hunt.” “It was confusing to me that anything like that could happen,” Dwork said. “I always knew I was innocent, and I wasn’t ashamed of what I was or what I am. It was just a sad period. I didn’t know frankly at that point it would affect the rest of my life.”

The Undesirable

Documentary chronicles dishonorable discharge By A. Sebastian Fortino

“T

he Undesirable” is a documentary currently in production focusing on the life and love of renowned interior designer Melvin Dwork. As a young man Dwork always knew he was gay and never thought anything of it, until he was undesirably discharged from the U.S. Navy’s Hospital Corps during WWII due to his homosexuality. Not having broken any of the military’s rules or regulations, Mel was under the impression the Navy opened his mail and discovered he was writing his lover Dale, who was also in the Hospital Corps but stationed in Louisiana. In the end they were both “undesirably discharged” from the Navy, a badge of dishonor they have carried around with them for over 67 years. The film is currently still in production and is accepting 100% tax-deductible donations towards the making of this film. Visit TheUndesirable.com to learn more or make a donation.

A HISTORY OF DADT

House GOP Attempts One Last Time to Delay DADT Repeal By Lisa Keen

I

n a request that seems more like political theatre than political combat, the House Armed Services Committee sent a plea to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta asking that repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell be delayed. The repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the federal law which has barred openly gay people from the military for 18 years, was enacted on Tuesday, 60 days after military officials and President Obama certified to Congress that the military is ready to repeal the law. But in a September 12 letter, Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Armed Services, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), chairman of the Military Personnel Subcommittee, urged Panetta to delay repeal. “The Department is not ready to implement repeal because all the policies and regulations necessary for the transition are not yet final,” states the letter. Specifically, McKeon and Wilson claim that they have not received from the DOD “revised regulations and a summary of all the specific policy changes, especially with regard to benefits, that will take effect upon repeal.” A Defense spokeswoman said Thursday, September 14, “The repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell will occur, in accordance with the law and after a rigorous certification process, on September 20. Senior Department of Defense officials have advised Congress of changes to regulations and policies associated with repeal. We take that obligation seriously.” A spokesman for the House Armed Services Committee downplayed the significance of the letter, saying its point was simply to “highlight” that, with any big change, it’s important that regulations are in place “and things go smoothly.” “We haven’t seen any evidence those things have happened,” said the spokesman. Specifically, the letter asked Panetta that

memoranda from senior military leaders regarding repeal of DADT be “made public and transmitted” to the Committee. But the Defense spokeswoman said, “Senior Department officials, including the General Counsel, have met with House Armed Services Committee staff and shared with them all of the proposed revisions to the regulations and new policies to be promulgated.” And another senior Defense official said, “The service secretaries, service chiefs, and combatant commanders submitted their recommendations months ago, and none of them suggested that repeal be postponed.” McKeon and Wilson’s request to make public memoranda from senior military leaders came at a particularly ironic time. Just three days earlier, the Republican-led House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG) informed a federal judge that BLAG did not consent to being videotaped during its defense of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court next month. The court had asked to videotape the proceedings in order to make them available to the public. Republican Congressional leaders published a Pledge to America in September 2010, promising to make their actions “more transparent.” Aubrey Sarvis, head of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), said the House committee’s letter was “another example of the hardcore opposition attempting to delay or undo” DADT repeal. “I expect they will continue to look for openings to deny gay and lesbian service members the same rights and dignity as their straight counterparts,” said Sarvis. Sarvis said the law passed by Congress last December and signed by President Obama, “only requires that the new regulations be prepared—not issued—before certification.” President Obama, Secretary Panetta, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen sent Congress written notice July 22 that

Outserve No Longer Underground

New magazine launch coincides with Sept. 20 By A. Sebastian Fortino

A

n organization serving LGBT people in the United States Armed Services, Outserve, launched last summer. However, now they will be serving gay military personnel openly…with both an online and hardcopy magazine. Despite being a clandestine group there are more than 4,000 members across the globe. Ironically these numbers mean it is one of the largest LGBT employee resource groups in the world. Of that number 100 will be featured in the upcoming Sept. 20th issue, which will be stocked on the newsstands of some military bases. “Gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members once had to conceal their true identities. By featuring their pictures and their stories, we are signaling that time has passed,” J.D. Smith, co-director of Outserve told The Advocate. Outserve magazine will truly let their readers come out of the barracks as it gives readers the opportunity to comment and repost articles on social networking sites. “It is time for these military members to be honored for their extraordinary commitment and sacrifice in defense of our country,” Smith continued.

A brief timeline of gays in the military in the U.S 1777 – Baron von Steuben, who was widely rumored to be gay, helps train the U.S. revolutionary forces and later becomes President Washington’s chief of staff. 1778 -- Lieutenant Gotthold Frederick Enslin becomes the first soldier discharged from the military (at that time, the Continental Army) for sodomy. 1916 – The military explicitly prohibits homosexuality in the Articles of War of 1916. 1939 – The ban on homosexuality isn’t enforced until World War II. By the end of the war more than 4,000 of the 12 million men conscripted for the war are rejected for being gay. 1975 -- Leonard Matlovich of the Air Force comes out of the closet while serving. He’s discharged and subsequently becomes the first serviceman to fight the ban on gays. 1984 -- Perry Watkins is discharged from the military for being gay even though he checked the “yes” box in the category of “homosexual tendencies” in 1968 when he was drafted for the Vietnam War. He challenges the ban in court and wins and is reinstated. 1988 -- Leonard Matlovich dies. On his tombstone it reads: “When I was in the military, they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one.” 1992 -- Colonel Margarethe “Grethe” Cammermeyer is discharged from the National Guard for being a lesbian. She files a lawsuit and wins and is reinstated. That same year Bill Clinton campaigns for president with the promise to lift the ban on gays in the military. 1993 – Congress enacts the Military Personnel Eligibility Act of 1993, which later becomes known as Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. 2009 – Serviceman Dan Choi comes out of the closet on the Rachel Maddow Show and is discharged from the military. He quickly becomes the face of DADT repeal and leads the charge. 2010 – Congress repeals Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. 2011 – The U.S. formerly ends Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and allows gays to serve openly in the military.

SFGN Editorial

September 21, 2011

Fighting the Good Fight Norm Kent, Publisher “Is the culture of victimhood so entrenched in the LGBT community that we can no longer recognize a true ally when he invites us into the White House?”

I

n a thoughtful editorial appearing in last week’s Washington Blade, Editor Kevin Naff opens his column with this question. He then uses his perch to chastise leading gay activists for calling President Obama to task for moving to slow on LGBT issues. Recalling the presidency of George Bush, Naff applauds the leadership of Barack Obama for being remarkably supportive of LGBT causes. He criticizes activists like Lt. Dan Choi and the GetEqual movement for being too demanding and not adequately appreciative of achievements the movement for LGBT equality has made in recent years. Having spent 40 years in protest movements, from Vietnam war sit-ins to rallies right here on Wilton Drive, I have a perspective measured by history. In my opinion, Kevin Naff is wrong. He is one of those limousine liberals willing to be chauffeured

18

to a civil rights demonstration, but wants to celebrate the cause with cocktails at an HRC blast in the W Hotel, instead of putting his neck on the line. Real protest requires real risks. When Henry David Thoreau, 200 years ago protesting a tax was asked by his friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson, why he was in jail, Thoreau replied, “Why are you not?” One of the most eloquent American treatises on freedom came from the Rev. Martin Luther King, when he wrote his historic “letter from a Birmingham jail.” To help desegregate restaurants in the Deep South, four young students sat at a counter in Greensboro refusing to get up. Like Rosa Parks on the back of a bus, they stood their ground and kept their seats. These are not people whining because they were victims. These were courageous men and women who said they would be victims no longer. When a crowd of activists gathered last month on a hot summer day to protest Congressman Allen West, they were not whining about how he did not agree with them.

They were gathering to say they would not allow him to abuse them with demeaning and disgraceful comments. If they barricaded his office with their presence, I would applaud rather than criticize them. When all of you show up in tuxedos next month at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Dinner at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach it will be, for many of you, your typical contribution to LGBT rights. It takes a lot more guts to chain yourself to a White House fence and get arrested fighting to end discrimination in the military than it does to eat caviar and down champagne in a hotel on South Beach. It is one thing to say ‘tear this wall down.’ It is quite another to help tear it down yourself, and put your body on the line for the cause and risk your freedom in a trial. Choi may be more than acquitted in his present trial for chaining himself to the White House fence, protesting the slow end to DADT. We may be able to show that the US government vindictively targeted him for a harsher prosecution than other protestors similarly situated. We may be able to show that his expressive efforts to bring down DADT so antagonized the White House that they engineered a prosecution to treat him more harshly than others who also protest on the White House sidewalk. After 18 years of injustice and 14,000 discharges of gay soldiers, acts of civil disobedience by protestors should be celebrated, not censured. What laptop liberals do not seem to get is that we should never have to plead, beg, grovel, and submit to someone else to get rights we should lawfully have had in the first place. We have to do those things necessary to bring the walls down. Sometimes you have to pull the chain and rattle the fence.

Mr. Naff reminds us how much better Mr. Obama was than Mr. Bush. But neither should have been holding us by a leash to begin with. It’s like saying Sheriff Bull O’Connor was nicer to “Negroes” in the 1960’s because he used water hoses to stop their protests but another sheriff used batons. If you tolerate injustice, you perpetuate it. If you wait for someone to dole out a hand, you lose sight of the fact that the hand was never theirs to give, and the arm is rightfully ours. While each of us owes a duty to law, there is no moral imperative to obey an unjust law. The protestors who chained themselves to a White House fence in order to point out the injustice of gays being excluded from the military were acting under a principle of justice which is intolerant of those who tolerate injustice. We don’t want the ‘tolerance’ of those who would ‘accept’ us. Keeping the pressure on people who keep us from accessing the full breadth of our liberties is a good and healthy thing. When laws that violate the human spirit are maintained, the rule of law is itself diminished and compromised. Break those laws and you do not necessarily disgrace the rule of law, you more speedily help create a new one that is more just, universal and equal. By all means, go enjoy your cocktails at a Human Rights dinner, but don’t you dare stand on a pedestal looking down at those willing to go to jail for your cause. Editor’s Note: Norm Kent is one of the attorney’s on Dan Choi’s legal team. Visit WashingtonBlade.com/2011/07/21/ourculture-of-victimhood to read Kevin Naff’s original story.

Why Not Now

’m remembering that fateful day on September 11, 2001. On that day there was “unity” and “oneness” at work; on that day, side by side, brave men and women gave their lives for one another; on that day, there were no thoughts given to one’s culture, religious affiliations, sexuality, sexual preference, political ideology, or race. We stood in “unity” and “oneness” facing the tragedy that had befallen us. My question is, “Why does it take a tragedy to bring us to oneness and unity? Why is it, especially in this free country of America, our humanity must be splintered and even broken when it comes to expressing the same comradery we witnessed on 9/11? We’ve seen how it’s done; we’ve watched the best of human kindness unfold in front of our eyes on 9/11. Can we not “pay it forward” regardless of the differences that exist between us? For a moment in time, “differences” did not exist in the hearts of the brave men and women, who graced us with their courage on 9/11, as they worked, side by side, to lift us all out of the rubble, left behind on that tragic day. If we are to honor them, and stand for anything, can we not stand together in oneness and unity? Let’s not wait for another tragedy to befall us; let’s be the best that humanity has to offer, “now!” – S idney Andrews, an author, who happens to be a lesbian. Port St. Lucie

his is a month of love and loss, marked for me by two tragic events. The first was the World Trade Center disaster of September 11, 2001. For most of 2001, I worked on the top floor of Two World Financial Center in New York City. Every morning, around 8:45 a.m., I walked the passageway from the train station under the World Trade Center to my building next door. I started a new position in the company’s New Jersey office, however, on September 10 at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, when the first plane hit, I was pulling into a parking lot in suburbia, not in a crowd of panicked commuters underneath the World Trade Center. Shortly thereafter, I asked my partner of 8 years if she wanted to start a family. I knew her answer, for she had always wanted children, but until then, my career had been my priority. On September 11, however, a heightened sense of fleeting possibilities motivated me to carpe ovum. Yes, it gave me pause, wanting to bring a child into a world where “detonate” is a reflexive verb. But when we lose our faith in the future, the terrorists have already won. I don’t want to overstate my experience versus those who were killed, injured, or knew those who were, either on 9/11 or in the military actions that followed. But the event made me realize how important it is to make the most of every moment with loved ones. We had our child in 2003, when a family crisis again underscored that lesson. The day before our son was born, my father came home from the hospital after a stemcell transplant for lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. He’s said that thinking about the pending birth of his first grandchild gave him strength. This year, shortly before the 9/11 anniversary, my father passed away after what may have been complications from the pancreatic cancer he had survived in 2008. I’ve been awash in the usual gamut of emotions: grief over his passing, relief that he is no longer suffering, and concern about the impact on my mother and my son. But I have also been

reflecting on the gifts that parents pass on to their children, and which last even after they are gone. It seems to me there are four key gifts: Practical knowledge: We teach our children how to talk, use the bathroom, read, write, add, and subtract. We may teach them to ride a bike, play an instrument, bake a cake, start a campfire, or drive a car the practical skills that, broadly speaking, they will most need to take care of themselves and get along in the world. But they are of limited use without other gifts as well. A sense of values: We may not all have identical values, but we teach our children to know right from wrong as we perceive them. Most of us teach our children to share, be polite, play well with others, and not to lie, cheat, or steal the guidelines that help them use their practical knowledge wisely. We teach them what love is and how to express it. We may also teach them precepts from our religion or codes of conduct handed

down from our own parents which brings us to the third gift. Heritage: Most of us identify, at least to some extent, with a certain culture, race, religion, national or geographic origin, or combinations thereof. LGBT parents may even pass on a dose of LGBT culture to our children, regardless of our children’s own sexual orientation or gender identity. Our heritage affects the practical knowledge we convey as well as our sense of values. I know how to make knishes a potato-filled Jewish pastry only because my father learned from his mother, and passed on the recipe to me. (I use the term “recipe” loosely, since my grandmother never wrote down a recipe in her life). But even more than the food itself and the fact that “low carb” was not in my ancestors’ vocabulary my father showed me the importance of providing for one’s family, of taking the time to prepare things with care and then to enjoy them with each other. However we come by our heritage, it gives us a sense of belonging, rooting us in the past so that we have a strong base from which to grow into the future. Inspiration: The most ephemeral of the gifts, but the catalyst that helps our children make use of the others. Without inspiration, they would not want to take their first steps, even if we showed them how. They would not want to follow our sense of values if they did not see us do so to good effect. And they would not care about their heritage if we did not show them how it enriches our lives. Sometimes, too, we inspire them by showing them what they would not want to do. They learn from our mistakes as much as our successes. Those of us who have ever lost a parent, through natural causes, accident, or deliberate act, feel a similar pain. But these tragedies also offer us an opportunity to reflect on what they have given us, and to hope that we are able, in some small way, to offer our own gifts to our children in turn.

The Gospel According to Kristin Chenoweth Singer talks country music, queers and Christians Photos by Jeremy Cowart By Chris Azzopardi

O

ne of the most happy-go-lucky ladies in showbiz, Kristin Chenoweth doesn’t get miffed very easily. But when she does, she does. And last year she did, after Newsweek published a commentary on the inability of gay actors to play straight roles. It upset the 43-year-old actress/singer so much she wrote an extensive letter to the magazine, calling the article “horrendously homophobic,” which was published shortly after the debacle – and which she spoke about during this interview. Chenoweth’s allegiance to the gay community goes way back to being a child and growing up in the South – a place she returned to for her latest album, Some Lessons Learned, her first of four to fully embrace her country roots. But her success hasn’t been confined to just the music business; Chenoweth broke out on Broadway, where she originated the role of Glinda in Wicked and most recently starred alongside Will & Grace star Sean Hayes in Promises, Promises. There’s also been a book (2009’s A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love and Faith in Stages), and several TV spots: Pushing Daisies, Glee and, coming soon to ABC, Good Christian Belles. So we had lots to talk about when we recently caught up with Chenoweth, who was on a dinner break from shooting her upcoming sitcom. During it, she discussed her history of dating gay men, her opinion on Michele Bachmann’s support of gay conversion clinics and being a little bit wicked.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s thought this. Oh no. Are you kidding? I was like, “Wait a minute!” But I just think the most important thing for me as an actress, because of the lines that come out of my mouth, is to just have to speak them and keep going, because they’re so funny and her name is so funny and the whole thing is just so great. I love it. Does your character have anything in common with April Rhodes, who you play on Glee? (Laughs) Probably not on paper, but they’re both pretty outlandish people. Carlene, though, is the antithesis of April. Speaking of April, when do you think we’ll see her on Glee again, considering the ban on guest stars for the third season of the show? I don’t know! Nobody’s mentioning it, so I’m hoping it happens. I certainly love her. She’s so fun to play.

You grew up in Oklahoma, so country music is your roots. How is this album a reflection of that? It’s so funny, because I get asked, “Why a country album now?” But that’s how it all began for me – and, of course, why would anyone know that? It’s not something I’ve been talking about a lot, but it’s the music I grew up listening to. One of my biggest influences is Dolly Parton, and when you look at the history of songs in musical theater and in country, they’re both usually great storytellers. I can’t get over your character’s I know just how lucky I am to do this kind of last name on Good Christian Belles: music. Getting to go to Nashville and sing this muCockburn. Carlene Cockburn. (Laughs) You can’t?! I can’t wait for my family sic that feels like home to me was a real gift, and one that I don’t take lightly. to hear that one. continued on page 30

Theater

A Gay Way to the “Forum” J.W. Arnold

S

ince the early days—and I mean the earliest days—of theater, the gays have loved their musical theater. There’s no telling how many aspiring drag queens expressed their guilty pleasures by donning wigs and dresses to play the female roles in what was a decidedly male profession. Broward Stage Door opened its 2011-12 season last weekend with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Stephen Sondheim’s thoroughly modern musical that pokes fun at the pillars of civilization in ancient Rome. Director Dan Kelley, a veteran of several Stage Door productions, places himself on center stage as Prologus, an actor, (and later Pseudolus, a wily slave seeking his freedom) who lets the audience know up front that tonight’s production will be a “Comedy Tonight” while reserving the tragedy for tomorrow. One by one, the cast of this great comedy are introduced: Hero (Andrew Betz), the young lad lovesick for the lovely virgin Philia (Lauren Cupples); Marcus Lycus (Mark Harmon), a dealer in courtesans who has sold Philia to Roman general Miles Gloriosus (Shane Tanner); Erronius (Jack Livesey), a citizen of Rome whose twin infants were kidnapped by pirates; Senex (Ken Clement) and Domina (Christine De Frece), Hero’s parents and Hysterium (Ricky Dain Jones), their slave. Rounding out the cast are the colorful courtesans (Tintinabula, Panacaea, The Geminae, and the Amazonian Gymnasia) and three Proteans who cover every other supporting role from soldier to eunuch. In order to win his freedom, Pseudolus promises to help Hero win the hand of Philia, and that’s where the serious comedy begins as the slave’s plans go awry. Did I mention the show is pretty gay? From the gaggle of giggling eunuchs skip-

ping across the stage to the fetish fantasies suggested by Gymnasia and Miles Gloriosus, it’s blatantly stereotypical and still hilarious. Hysterium is pretty fey and so is Pseudolus in the hands of Kelley, who frequently takes his performance over the top, completely overshadowing his costars. Musically, the score, unlike many of Sondheim’s later works, is melodic and accessible and, under the musical direction of David Nagy, sung with gusto. Kudos to Stage Door for taking on relatively large shows at a time when most theaters are cutting back, but the tradeoff is David Cohen’s orchestration tracks. They are painstakingly constructed, but no substitute for the spontaneity of a live ensemble in the pit. Chrissi Ardito’s choreography is once again superb, employing physical comedy, acrobatics and clever tricks throughout. And Anthony White’s lighting design accentuates the relatively simple staging of the show, which takes place in front of three cartoonish Roman houses designed by Ardean Landhuis. Once again, Stage Door employs the vast resources of Costume World to outfit its cast in colorful—indeed flamboyant—Romanesque wear. More than one local drag queen is undoubtedly salivating over Miles Gloriosus’ ostrich plumed helmet and I know I’ve seen Gymnasia’s gilded metal Dcups on stage somewhere.

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” Through Oct. 9 Broward Stage Door Theatre, 8036 W. Sample Rd., Coral Springs Oct. 14-Nov. 13 Byron Carlisle Theatre, Miami Beach Tickets $38-$42 at StageDoorTheatre.com

Kristin Chenoweth lot of women don’t even know they’ve done it! And Sean Hayes is just a darn good kisser, what can I say?

continued from page 21

“What Would Dolly Do?” reminds me a lot of Dolly herself. I co-wrote that, and (producer) Bob Ezrin asked, “Who’s had the biggest influence on you country music-wise?” I said, “Dolly, without question.” And he said, “How would she approach it? Let’s think: What would Dolly do?” I said, “Bob, why aren’t we writing that song?” There’s something about her that I feel very attuned to. There’s only one Dolly. I’m not comparing myself, but I’m just saying her spirit and the way she looks at life is pretty similar to me. And the cover I did of hers (“Change”) is actually a very emotional thing and it reminded me – of course, how could I ever forget? – what an amazing songwriter she is.You know, I didn’t do a lot of covers. I did two covers, one of Carrie (Underwood’s) and one of Dolly’s, and I just love both of them. I love their music, I love their spirit; everything they stand for.

It’s true. You are two of the happiest people I know of. So, tell me… what pisses you off? (Laughs) Oh gosh. I don’t really get mad that often. But I’m not going to lie, when I do, there’s a quiet that comes over me that is a little like whoa, and that happens when I don’t feel other people are prepared or doing their job or pulling their weight. I come from a family where my dad came from nothing and worked hard to get where he is, and he said, “Work hard, play hard, Kris,” and I guess that’s kind of been my motto in life. So when I see people squandering opportunities or having a sense of entitlement, that really makes me crazy. Because I don’t understand it. It’s not a world I get. You’re driving, so how about something that ticks you off about other drivers? You know what, I don’t get road rage! I just don’t. I’m like, “OK, you cut me off – you must need to go somewhere a lot quicker than I do. Go on then.” And also, I’ve had so many people in my life be affected by car wrecks, and I’ve had a few myself, that I just have realized, “Eh, you know, life’s too short.”

30

Jeremy Cowart

It makes total sense, because, to me, both you and Dolly epitomize happiness. Oh my god, thank you. That’s the biggest compliment you could give me.

Wait, so you dated a gay man in high school? Yeah, and I’m like, “Well, that’s why we were such a great couple!” He didn’t pleasure me in any way but he helped me pick out my prom dress!

I know one thing that makes you upset, and that’s homophobic people. I don’t like that, you’re right. Your letter in response to that Newsweek column said it all. Why was it important to address your feelings on that issue? To be honest with you, I wasn’t prepared for what was going to happen. I was on Broadway doing Promises, Promises, and I read the article and I actually thought it was pretty irresponsible. I’m not even talking about whether a person agrees with being gay or not, I’m talking about artistry and gay actors trying to play straight. It just made me mad, because I thought, “Well, I’ve played a prostitute, does that mean I am one? No.” I just thought it was a little bit of a bullying thing, and I honestly prayed about it – no kidding, I prayed about it. I wrote that letter in one fell swoop and I gave it to a good friend of mine to proofread, because the last thing I wanted to do was sound like an idiot, which I can do as well. So we sent it on and

the next thing I know, they printed it. And by the way, I’m a big fan of the magazine, which is why I was so bummed. But I think that they felt bad and hopefully there’s been some discussion about it and some learning, because that’s what we’re here to do on this Earth, to learn our purpose. Well, one of my purposes in this life – since I’m a believer and a Christian – is to help people realize that not every Christian thinks that being gay is a sin. To reinforce your stance that gay actors can indeed act straight, you made out with your Promises, Promises co-star Sean Hayes at the Tonys last year. It might’ve been a little jib. It might’ve been a little one. (Laughs) What was it like to make out with a gay man, and was that your first time making out with one? Well, let’s face it, my high school boyfriend is gay, so I don’t think it’s my first time making out with gay men – and I bet a

Was he one of the first gay people you knew in Oklahoma? Yeah. I want to tell you something I know about myself: When I was in the second or third grade, I first heard the word “dyke,” and it was in reference to a girl in our school who was very, very tomboyish – and I didn’t really understand what the word was, but I knew I didn’t like the way it was said. And for some reason I’ve always been drawn to the person that was alone, and I don’t mean to make me sound like I’m Mother Teresa, because I’m not, but I’ve always been drawn to people who felt left out or different, and maybe it’s because I too felt different and unique. People would not think this of me, because there’s this perception of me that, “Oh, life’s been perfect and things have come so easily.” But let’s face it, my speaking voice is very interesting.Yes, I was a cheerleader but I also wanted to do all the plays, I was in renaissance choir, and I too felt a little bit like an outsider. I was always drawn to people who felt that way too. And sure, some of them were gay and I never did understand – I guess the word is fear. God made us all equal. He made me short, he made someone gay, he made someone tall – whatever it is, it’s not a sin; it’s how we’re made. And that’s the way I feel about it. It flies in the face of a lot of what Christians believe, but as I’m finding out there’s a lot of Christian people who think the same as me. So that’s my deal, and I think we should not be careful of the unknown but rather accepting and loving of it. As someone who’s Christian and supports the gay community, how do you feel about the pray-awaythe-gay program that Michele Bachmann supports? (Long pause) Um, you know what – you can have your opinion. One of the great things about being in this country is we get to freely say what we believe. I just don’t happen to agree with that. I like the pray part! (Laughs)

Andrej Pejic

Andrej Pejic, Guy & Doll “The hottest model in womenswear these days is also a hot model for menswear,” reported Juju Chang on ABC’s Nightline. “He’s already graced more covers than any other male model.” 19-year-old Andrej Pejic, is 6’2” with a very slight waist. His reed-like body was quite in demand on the runways of New York’s recent Fashion Week. He also commands women’s salaries – three times more than males. “I think the term transgender…is an umbrella term,” he told Chang when asked about his identity. “But I feel comfortable the way I am now…don’t feel the need to alter my body significantly.” He feels gender is not that important, when he looks in the mirror he sees himself. Perhaps, what is most interesting is Pejic’s roots. The hot ticket model was raised in a refugee camp in Serbia, during the ethnic war in Yugoslavia. Now, he’s been dressed – in a superb wedding gown – by Jean Paul Gaultier. Check out TinyURL.com/3p42vj7 to see the interview.

Speaking of family both Ellen and Cher believe reminding the haters Bono is someone’s child should pull at some of their heart strings or, at least…shut them up. “What if someone attacked your child,” the talk show host and entertainer asked her audience. “Try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes.” Bono commented on his dancing shoes saying that his first dance is the cha-cha, and he was terrified at first. “The quickstep gives me nightmares, but I’m starting to feel pretty confident,” said Bono. “We did it for some of the other people on the show today and they seem to really like it.”

Is that Kirstie Alley from Cheers or…Agnes Moorhead from Bewitched? Knowing the actress who played witchy motherin-law Endora died in the 1980s… we’ll have to assume that’s Kirstie Alley. For New York’s Fashion Week the actress, 60, was invited to model for Malaysian designer Zang Toi whom she has known since the early-1990s. “I did the cover of Redbook and I wanted something really beautiful,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “...he just has the most beautiful clothes, period.” The color of the gown, a stunning blue. BC’s Dancing With The Stars only began Monday yet it’s been under a storm of scrutiny and controversy for weeks right after the announcement of this years celebrity cast, which includes Chaz Bono, a transsexual male and son of Sonny and Cher. He’s been paired with professional dancer Lacey Schwimmer. Before transitioning to a male Chaz Bono was known to the world as openly lesbian Chastity Bono. Chaz is the first transgendered contestant that’s been on the show. His appearance has drawn harsh criticism as well as inspired defenses. Chaz’s mother, pop diva / gay icon Cher called in to The Ellen Show to defend her son. “There are such feelings of hostility and fear that I don’t even know if I have the magic words that could make viewers feel more comfortable or perhaps sooth them into not being terrified of my child dancing on Dancing with the f*cking stars” Her response was well received by the audience and there was a huge round of applause when she made her statement. During an interview with Joy Behar on The Joy Behar Show Chaz Bono said, “I thought this experience would be fun and I thought it would be physically challenging by get-

ting me in better shape.” He added, “I’m use to the scrutiny because I have been an advocate for the LGBT Community since the 90’s so I’m not bothered by it at all.” Dr. Keith Ablow, a licensed psychiatrist and Fox News contributing blogger compared Bono’s gender dysmorphia to that of mentally ill patients who suffer from limb dysmorphic disorder the amputation of healthy limbs. Ablow has been on the record numerous times calling Bono’s appearance on the show “toxic,” and said “I advise parents to not allow their children to watch episodes in which Chaz appears.” In the past years Chaz Bono has authored a book, and made an Emmy nominated documentary. Chaz said he never had any intentions of announcing himself as a transsexual on the show. Instead his plan from day one was too announce him only as an author and advocate. Chaz’s response to Ablow’s outrageous words, “No, his comments don’t hurt my feelings because this shrink only has an agenda against gays and transsexuals and he is only jumping all over this for media attention to try to further his career.” Strangely enough, there seems to be little

outrage towards new contestant Carson Kressley, the openly gay star of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. A quick glance at the DWTS official message board reveals scores of people who feel the show is no longer family-friendly, and believe it is pushing “the gay agenda.” An executive producer for DWTS told The Hollywood Reporter, “As far as the any gay agenda that some say we are pushing, well that’s just nonsense. We don’t have an agenda of any sorts. I think of all the 120 celebrities we have put on the show, we’ve had now only three transgender and/or gay contestants. If that’s a homosexual agenda, we’re not doing very well at it.”

think that it’s wonderful that this season’s DWTS cast is comprised of an excellent and diverse range of performers, which will help remind us that families come in all shapes, colors, genders, and sizes. Chaz Bono is an inspiration whether you are straight or gay. His participation in this highly popular show is ground breaking and long over due. I believe Chaz will bring in huge ratings for ABC and at the same time spread awareness of the ‘T’ in LGBT. Like being gay or lesbian being transgender is not a choice despite what the haters might say. I grew up feeling I was trapped inside the wrong body and it was agonizing day after day as a child to feel as if God made a mistake. I felt helpless as if there is nothing you can do about it. It’s hard enough to come forward and tell your family and friends about these feelings and get them to understand and accept. Then we go through the agony of the transition just to finally feel comfortable with our true gender identity. Then to have the public criticize us after everything we have been through is profoundly disgraceful. Who cares if the show looses a few viewers simply because they hold bigoted thoughts. I’m certain that the show will be gaining and achieving so much more by having Chaz in the cast. I’ve never watched DWTS but this season I am tuning in. It doesn’t matter if Chaz wins the competition for he is already a winner and a champion for having the courage to do it. As we say in the entertainment industry, “Break a leg Chaz, and congratulations for having the “balls” to do it!”

POSTCARDS FROM KEY WEST

From Fur to Fantasy, Key West Offers Upcoming Delights By Steve Smith

R

ecently I was in Philadelphia at the 21st annual convention of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association. I caught up with many colleagues including Fred Karger, the first openly gay candidate for president of the U.S. Fred wants to come to Key West and meet with our LGBT community and tour the island for the first time. It would be fun to have him here if he can manage it during his busy schedule! I left Philadelphia the day before the rains came, and was very pleased to be out and about in Key West instead of stuck in a hotel room watching the liquid sunshine. Speaking of out and about, I stopped at the Bourbon St. Pub for the Saturday pool party and tea dance. A fun crowd

played volleyball in the pool while playing Bourbon St.’s version of ring toss. Stop by when you’re here and try your hand; drinks are BOGO — buy one and get one free! Key West Bear Fest starts Sept. 22 for a weekend of fur, bears, otters and cubs. Feast on bear-size portions at Antonia’s, Square One, and Braza Lena. Frolic with the bears at pool parties, bear drag shows, and late-night parties to welcome the sunrise. This third year of our Bear Fest is shaping up to be one of the best ever. I am way too busy with the Fantasy Fest king and queen candidates’ events, which are heating up everyone’s schedules for the next month. Recently Dave for King hosted an orchid auction with more than 125 attendees, and Sunshine had a Key lime barbeque party at Ker-

Elizabeth “Liz” Ketcham and Surrey Westrupp are the candidates for queen. The ones who raise the most money for the Keys’ AIDS Help organization win the coveted crowns — so, if you’re here, try to attend some of the unique events these locals have conjured up. Sea monsters and creatures from

the deep, mermen and mermaids will surface Friday, Oct. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 30, during the island’s annual Fantasy Fest, themed “Aquatic Afrolic” this year. For more than 30 years, we’ve celebrated during the last week of October with toga parties, the gala Headdress Ball, Goombay street festival, a lavish over-the-top parade and much more. Visit the Fantasy Fest website for a list of all the events and plan to visit us for the festivities — there are still accommodations available. Speaking of festivities, the recent Womenfest had more than 200 people attending the poolside kick-off party at the Southernmost Hotel. If you missed this year’s festival, mark your calendar for the 2012 event, set for Sept. 4-9, 2012. Till next time!

The

Fitness Guy By Peter Jackson, CPT THE SECRET TO HUGE TRICEPS Q: I’ve been lifting weights pretty hard for the past year and have built a lot of muscle, but my triceps don’t seem to be growing even though I work them 2-3 times a week. What can you suggest? A: It sounds like you are over-training your triceps. But first let’s understand this important muscle group.

The triceps brachii (Latin for “three-headed arm muscle”) are located at the back of your arm on the opposite side of the biceps and actually make up about two-thirds of the muscle in your arms. Any movement involving straightening your arm uses the triceps. While bulging biceps are always impressive, it is your triceps that will add size and make your arms look massive. Guys with well-developed triceps typically boast a horseshoe-shape ridge of muscle, which is truly a thing of beauty! There are three distinct muscles in the triceps which all join together at the elbow: the lateral head (the outer area), the long head (the inner area and the largest of the three) and the medial head (mostly covered by the lateral and long heads). It’s important to understand that most upper body exercises require the use of your arm muscles. Pushing movements, such as the bench press, recruit the triceps to allow you to straighten your arms, while pulling movements, such as the cable row, recruit your biceps. So by default, when you are pushing heavy weight your triceps are simultaneously getting a good workout. There are hundreds of exercises to work the triceps, but

TRY THIS EXERCISE: HAMMER CURL

I recommend paying special attention to those which recruit the long head, the largest of the three and the one with the most potential to add size rapidly to your arms. Important tip: The farther away your arms are from your torso, the greater the emphasis is on the long head. Closegrip Bench Presses and overhead extension exercises using dumbbells, an EZ-bar or cable should therefore be at the top of your list of triceps exercises. My favorite among these is the Lying Overhead Extension also known as Skull Crusher for obvious reasons! Dips, and there are dozens of ways to do them, are also excellent for recruiting and building all the muscles of the triceps. Two more of my favorite triceps exercises are Dumbbell Kickbacks and Rope Triceps Pressdowns. Training your triceps specifically, as you say, 2-3 times a week amounts to overtraining considering that you are probably training your chest at least once a week as well, which inherently means you are also working your triceps. Muscles don’t grow in the gym but during the process of recovering, so cut back on the frequency of your triceps workouts. Hitting them twice a week is sufficient. Work out with a trainer or gym buddy to allow you to lift heavy and change your workouts regularly.

TIP OF THE WEEK

Chase Brendle, CPT, a strength-training specialist at Push Fitness, offers the following nutrition tips:

PRIME THE PUMP TO LOSE THE PLUMP Never skip breakfast! Eat protein (such as eggs) and carbohydrates (such as oatmeal and whole grain cereals) with 30 minutes of waking up to jumpstart your metabolism and provide energy for your morning. NO WHITE AT NIGHT Eat carbohydrates early in the day when they can be used for energy and consume protein-rich meals in the early evening when they can be used for muscle recovery and growth. PRE-LOAD TO RE-LOAD Don’t go to the gym or meet your personal trainer on an empty stomach. Eat one hour before working out to prevent fatigue and maximize performance. Have a protein shake handy to drink within 30 minutes of working out.

Ted Williams demonstrates the Hammer Curl. (Photo by Toby’s Photos) This exercise, which replicates the movement of using a hammer, is a good one to build your biceps. Stand with your arms by your sides holding a dumbbell in each hand with a neutral grip (palms facing your side). Curl one arm at a time, keeping your elbow close to your side. Squeeze your biceps at the top of the movement and return to the starting position. Repeat with the other arm. Perform three consecutive sets of 12, 10 and 8 reps, increasing weight with each set.

Questions About Residency? Asylum? Deportation?

Evan Wolfson, founder and president of the National Freedom to Marry (FTM) organization, said PRRI’s findings confirm “powerful support from young people.” He said the support is part of the “shifted political equation” towards “the national majority” for marriage equality. Boston-based Charles Martel, co-chair of Catholics for Marriage Equality, said, “The current research on millennials shows that acceptance not tolerance is a hallmark of the shift in attitude towards gay persons.” “From a religious perspective,” he said, “millennials find themselves questioning attitudes and teachings about homosexuality that do not reflect their own experiences and knowledge and therefore see these teachings as lacking substance based on reality.” Executive director of Equality Illinois, Bernard Cherkasov, said, “The findings of the survey are encouraging across the board.”

“While it’s true that support for marriage equality among senior citizens lags that of millennials,” said Cherkasov, “a clear majority of seniors support [some kind of] relationship recognition for same-sex couples.” The PRRI report found 51 percent of seniors support civil unions. “We know from our work across the state that many seniors understand why equal protections for same-sex couples are necessary,” said Cherkasov, “but they are not accustomed to seeing married same-sex couples. Seniors may support equality for same-sex couples, but they are making a distinction as to the terminology through which equality would be granted.” “The challenge is for us in the LGBT equality movement,” said Cherkasov, “is to make a clear case why the only way to have full equality for same-sex couples is to have marriage equality. A separate institution with a different name does not turn out to provide equal rights and protections.”
