Miami to Celebrate Hispanic Pride this Weekend By J.W. Arnold
Foundation, the city of Miami Beach and soon preparations were underway for the first event of its kind in South Florida. “Hispanics have always been involved with the existing (LGBT) activities, but not had the opportunity to give a voice to their culture. Our goal is to create that environment of culture,” Richa says. Five-time Grammy Awardwinner Olga Tanon will headline performances on the main stage, joined by local performers Adora, Marytrini, Mariloly and Shanaya Bright, radio personality Chanel and Jose from “Minute

outh Florida’s LGBT community is arguably one of the most “out and proud” in the country. A quick look at the calendar would back that claim up with annual Pride festivals in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Miami Beach and Lake Worth. This weekend, the region’s sizable Latin population will add another Pride event to that list with the first “Celebrate Orgullo” festival. Spanish for “pride,” Orgullo will showcase the diverse cultural heritage and contributions of the Hispanic community and was planned to coincide with National Hispanic Heritage Month. The festival will take place from noon to 6 p.m., Oct. 1, at Lummus Park, between 10th and 11th Streets in Miami Beach, and will feature musical performances, folkloric dance, celebrity guests, drag performers and vendors representing both commercial and non-profit organizations, says Jorge Richa, a member of the organizing committee. “(Celebrate) Orgullo got its start with Ivan Cano, manager of The Palace and a longtime advocate for the Hispanic community.
He wanted to engage the Hispanic community at the grassroots level,” explains Richa. “What better way to do that than with a celebration of our culture.” Cano recruited a small organizing committee, including Richa, community activist Herb Sosa and other leaders just two months ago. He then partnered with the MiamiDade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce

of Fame.” In addition to the entertainers, preliminary winners from a series of dance competitions held at local bars and nightclubs over the past month will compete during the festival’s grand finale for the inaugural dance title. Several clubs will also be hosting special parties in conjunction with the festival: Pandora at Bar 721, 721 Lincoln Lane, on Fri-
day, Sept. 30; Inferno at Score, 727 Lincoln Rd., and Pandora at Bar 721 on Saturday, Oct. 1; and The Palace Bar on Sunday, Oct. 2. In addition to entertainment and parties, Celebrate Orgullo includes a civic element, stresses Richa. Openly gay detective Juan Sanchez of the Miami Beach Police Department will be recognized with a Unity Coalition award for the instrumental role he played as liaison between the department and the LGBT community. With residents representing 19 different Hispanic countries or cultures represented in the region, Richa feels the theme of the festival, “Heritage, Diversity, Integry and Honor: The Renewed Hope for America,” is especially appropriate for the first Celebrate Orgullo festival as organizers prepare for the thousands expected to attend. Proceeds from the event will fund local scholarships and expectations high as the Hispanic community showcases its diversity this weekend. Visit CelebrateOrgullo.com for more information.

Spirit of Hope Gala & Awards, 2011 Broward House raises funds for teen suicide hotline at Oct. 7 event By A. Sebastian Fortino
Health, Travelhost Elite are major donors. The Signature Grand underwrite 20 to 30 percent of the event. In terms of the hotline for DeCarlo said his organization began thinking of such a service this past summer. “We have an arm called the M Project, which works with younger gay men,” said DeCarlo. “We wanted to know where youth call when they are in despair and cannot take being bullied anymore. We want a simple direct phone number for them so they can remember it easily when they are in pain. We are trying to create a social network and hotline for suicide prevention because, ultimately, these people want to hear someone’s voice.” The event begins at 8 p.m., guests are encouraged to dress in a Roaring Twenties theme, in which to enjoy the antics of the Keystone Kops, the “gin soaked open bar” and what is sure to be a delicious three course meal. The event costs $100, pre-booked tables for 10 guests can be had for $950. As Halloween is just around the corner remember your costume can easily do double duty, take it from doing the Charleston on Oct., 7 to Manors Masquerade, on Oct., 30.

or the fourth year in a row Broward House, one of the most visible HIV/ AIDS organizations in South Florida, will celebrate another successful year with their themed gala. The organization will also bestow an award upon the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, a major supporter. Tuesday’s Angels will also be honored as will Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz who has worked to ensure the LGBT-community are not ignored in Florida. Broward House is pleased revenue will be allocated to a new initiative a teen suicide prevention and bullying hotline. Of course the main draw to the gala is that it’s a party. Terry DeCarlo, Director of Public Relations with Broward House, hopes to raise $30,000 to support the organization. “We do a different theme each year,” said DeCarlo. “The first one was Moulin Rouge, then we did the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, last year was right around Halloween so we did the Little Gala of Horrors. Nikki Adams and myself work together and try to think outside the box, something where people can dress up and let their hair down but still support a good cause.” Typically at least 300 people come to the event, once again hosted at the Signature
Grand in Davie. The venue, with façade and interior inspired by Italian villas, is well suited for the Cotton Club theme as such architecture was en vogue in the ‘20s. “At this point I have over 200 confirmed guests,” added DeCarlo. “People are so last minute today, and we always get a rush of last minute buyers closer to the party date. So I expect another rush this year. We try to get everything donated through sponsorship.” Visit BrowardHouse.org/Cotton.html for more So far Florida Power and Light, Broward information.
Health Care Screening for Women of Color Deemed a Success By Denise Royal

or the first time in South Florida, a health care expo for women of color was held Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Pride Center in Wilton Manors. About 75 women were expected, but more than twice that number actually showed up. “This is an historic event,” said lesbian activist Naomi Parker, member of Rainbow Ladies and former board member of the Pride Center. It was the first time ever that so many African American women had been there. “Women of color are much closeted. For them for come to the Pride Center is such an affirmation that the Pride Center is a safe place,” according to Parker. Attendees were able to receive breast ex-

ams, HIV testing, cholesterol screenings and information on how to receive affordable mammograms and Pap Tests. Attending the event and receiving those tests were potentially lifesaving for a handful of participants. Two women were found with lumps in their breasts. At least one other was found to be at risk for ovarian cancer. While all of those women need further tests, the expo revealed the lack of access to affordable health care. Several organizations came together to hold this event including Rainbow Ladies, Beta Phi Omega and Area Resource and Referral Organization for Women or ARROW. Much-needed support came from Bobbi Meyers, Executive Director of the Miami/
Fort Lauderdale Susan G. Komen affiliate. “Health care is a women’s issue. None of the public health systems address lesbian, bi, and transgender women of all races,” says Dr. Nan Van Den Bergh of ARROW. While the event was open to all women, it targeted women of color who are LBT. The high attendance shows those women are an underserved population when it comes to health care. “Doctors and other health care providers need to be educated on the risk for LBT women of color. Their needs have not been given visibility,” says Van Den Bergh. Let’s take breast cancer for example. White women are more likely to be diagnosed while Latina and Black women are more likely to die from it. A main part of the disparity is access to affordable healthcare. LBT women are also less inclined to seek preventative health care in the face of discrimination and homophobia. Visit ArrowLBT.org for a list of health care resources available.
Varsity Club Monthly Happy Hour Young professionals group has much to be happy about By Jean Guilgoult
“T
he Pride Center’s Varsity Club was created to help foster South Florida’s up and coming community leaders, activists, and philanthropists,” according to their mission statement. The organization was launched this summer. In August the group, led by Jason Burns, Major Gifts Officer of the Pride Center at Equality Park, partnered with Women in Network to gather backpacks and school supplies for needy students at Thurgood Marshall Elementary. They presented students with over 150 backpacks, 325 notebooks, 316 highlighters, 1450 pencils and 3500 sheets of paper. In July the organization took to the waters around Wilton Manors and cleaned up the middle river, bringing in several gallons of trash. Currently they are developing projects to benefit the community over the holiday season. They are also looking to increase their volunteer base and steering committee members. If you’re a young professional interested in volunteering and community service, or have any potential projects in need of volunteers, a good time to introduce yourself would be at their monthly happy hour at The Manor Entertainment Complex on Wilton Drive. The happy hour takes place on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. and its date is easy to remember as it always takes place on the last Friday of the month. Search “The Pride Center’s Varsity Club” on Facebook or contact jburns@PrideCenterFlorida.org for more information.

The Pleasures of Small Town Life Part Two: Protecting Wilton Manors History
By A. Sebastian Fortino

he lovely Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve, located just across from city hall on Wilton Drive, is known for the large, Southern-style home built by Judge George Richardson in 1953. Shortly before his death in 2002 he sold the land to the city with the intention Wilton Manors would maintain it as a public park and nature preserve. Given Fort Lauderdale just recently celebrated 100 years as a city residents can be proud of the preservation of this park. There was a house here built in 1925 by the Willingham family. Sadly, the original home could not be saved and the carriage house is the only surviving structure from that era. It is also maintained by the city, while a lamppost nostalgically marks the site of the main house. Beginning in 1936 the land hosted an early golf course, as George Richardson’s father made his income by developing them. While golf was a major attraction for early homeowners the fact Wilton Manors sits on higher ground than many other local communities was another draw. In terms of Florida history and domestic architecture, it is noteworthy the city transformed these older buildings into civic structures rather than raze them. The Richardson House, affectionately known by locals as “The Manor House” is the headquarters of the Wilton Manors Historical Society run by Board President Diane Cline, whom has lived here since the 1970s. Coming from Philadelphia, surrounded by Revolutionary history, I was curious to see what kind of history they preserve given Wilton Manors’ youth.
“We came here for my husband’s health,” Cline said of her 1976 move to the area from Ohio which proved quite permanent for the Cline family. “I have five children, 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren all living nearby.” Cline has long been a fixture in local politics and community events, she quickly made me realize WMHS’ mission is to preserve what they can while descendants of early residents still have a connection to the town’s early history, before that knowledge is lost. “The towers were located where Wells Fargo is now. You would climb up into the taller tower to pick out your lot,” Cline said of the whimsical, 1920s towers, which are depicted on the post-card-like Wilton Manors sign along Wilton Drive. She also showed pictures from early founders instrumental in attracting permanent and seasonal residents to the town. “Our main, all-encompassing goal was to preserve the house, and the history of the original families, not let it be torn down by developers,” said Cline of the well-built structure, which has survived every hurricane since its construction. “The Historical Society stepped in after the house was purchased from George Richardson. The family donated furniture, the Historical
Society’s desk was actually his law desk, and even the curtains in the front room are original to the house.” The state, county, and city of Wilton Manors own the house in partnership. A grants writer was responsible for gathering funds to transform private home into wheelchair accessible public space available for events, so that it, like the municipal gym would bring revenue to the city. “The Richardson House is rockin’ this year,” Chris Cooper, Administrative Program Director for the Department of Leisure Services, said proudly of its bookings. Yet, water access is the current draw to this historic park, which sits on five acres. “The waterways around the property were channeled back the way nature intended,” said Cooper of the South Fork of the Middle River. “We also wanted to rehydrate wetland areas on the property.” Weekend kayaking is available through a municipal partnership with AtlanticCoastKayak.com for a reasonable hourly fee on weekends. It’s a fun way to pass an afternoon, catch some sun, and exercise. If you don’t to take to the water a deck path follows the Middle River. Don’t be afraid of the large webs above, home to the non-poisonous Banana Spider, as they dine
on local mosquitoes. The nature preserve, a distinct habitat for native South Floridian flora and fauna, is a small but impressive reminder urbanization came to Broward County only within the last century therefore the community has the opportunity to return areas back to their natural state. Wilton Manors, as in communities throughout Florida receives grants to remove invasive species of flora and fauna. “We also have to make sure they don’t return,” Cooper added, as he pointed out some plants, which have returned without invitation. “It’s ongoing work.” Wilton Manors also receives aid to regreen the city. Over $125,000 has been granted by the Tree Trust Fund to plant and replace trees in Wilton Manors based on their age and size. This year alone they have planted or replaced 89 trees. “In phase one between 2009 and 2010 over 200 trees were planted,” Cooper said of making the city more green. “Before 2012 we will have planted over 500 trees with the funds.” With local citizens who wish to keep Wilton Manors’ past alive, and a thriving park system of green spaces and waterways, it is clear small-town life is not only a desirable alternative to city-living but still a vibrant part of the American landscape. The Pleasures of Small Town Life is a continuing series on the history and culture of Wilton Manors. Next month, to coincide with Gay History Month, SFGN examines the growth of the town from suburban hamlet to one of the most popular zip codes for the LGBT-community.

serving as defense secretary since 2006, under Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama. He presided over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and was involved in key decisions including the repeal of the ``don’t ask, don’t tell’’ policy for gays in the military. Since 1989, the Liberty Medal has been given annually to individuals or organizations whose actions strive to bring liberty to people worldwide. Previous recipients include director Steven Spielberg and former Czech President Vaclav Havel.
Neb. couple marry on gay military service LINCOLN, Neb. -- A Nebraska couple marked the end of the U.S. military’s ban on gays serving openly in the armed service by tying the knot in front of friends and family. The Lincoln Journal Star reported last week that Gregory Smith, 48, a full-time member of the Nebraska Army National Guard, married 39-year-old John Burns on Tuesday in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Gay marriages are legal in Iowa but not in Nebraska. The couple originally planned to marry next spring, but Smith told family members he wanted to marry on the first day he could serve openly as a gay man in the military. Smith is a sergeant at the National Guard base at Ashland. “After serving almost 17 years in two branches of the military, I am glad that (don’t ask, don’t tell) has finally been repealed,” he said in an email. “This day marks another special day, as I married my same-sex partner of four years.” Burns told the Journal Star that if the ban on gay military service members had not been lifted, he and Smith probably would not have married. “We probably would have waited until Greg got out of the military,” Burns said. Repeal of the 18-year-old legal provision, commonly known as “don’t ask, don’t tell,” under which gays can serve as long as they don’t openly acknowledge their sexual orientation, took effect last week. The head of Pentagon personnel policies, Clifford Stanley, issued a memo saying “all service members are to treat one another with dignity and respect regardless of sexual orientation.”
Nashville fire chief suspends paramedic NASHVILLE,Tenn. -- The Nashville Fire Department has suspended a paramedic after anti-gay comments were posted on a department Internet page and his own Facebook account. Fire Chief Steve Halford ordered a two-month suspension of Kevin Kennedy after a departmental hearing last week, according to The Tennessean (http://bit.ly/nR5k8d). Deputy Chief Kim Lawson, who speaks for the department, said the fire service has a diverse group of employees and serves a diverse community. She said the comments were disruptive to discipline. Kennedy was accused of posting statements that homosexuality is a perversion and that two gay emergency medical services workers should, “crawl back into the closet.” Firefighters union president Mark Young said Kennedy isn’t speaking to the media and hasn’t decided whether to appeal his suspension.

Anti-Bullying guidelines mark suicide anniversary NEWARK, N.J. -- A Rutgers freshman jumped to his death off the George Washington Bridge one year ago, touching off a nationwide conversation about bullying of gay youth. New Jersey’s legislature passed anti-bullying legislation in the wake of Tyler Clementi’s death. The state attorney general earlier this week distributed new guidelines to school officials and law enforcement about the law. Some school officials say they’re still trying to determine which infractions fall under the guidelines. One superintendent says his staff grappled with whether an incident among 2nd-graders in which one said the other had “cooties” would meet the new standards. It did not.

Mainstream Christians Must Stand Up to Religious Right Wayne Besen is the Exec. Director of Truth Wins Out/TruthWinsOut.org Where is the religious left?
I
n August, fundamentalist preacher Dr. Michael Brown organized a regimen of red shirted Bible-thumpers to infiltrate Charlotte’s gay pride event. Hundreds of zealots confronted and harassed festival attendees with their arrogant slogan “God Has A Better Way.” The hatred and religious bigotry was appalling, but not surprising. What truly bothers me, however, was the lack of mainstream Christians standing up and speaking out against such fanatical behavior. Virtually every time I write about the Religious Right I’m reminded by the faithful that “not all Christians are like that.” Of course, this is true and some of the most dedicated activists I have worked with are people of faith. Last week, in fact, I teamed up with Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church to host a week of edu-

cational seminars designed to counter an “ex-gay” conference in Houston. Still, the number of mainstream Christians fighting the hate campaigns of the Religious Right is disappointing. With thousands of churches, millions of members and a vested interest in fighting back against religious extremism, they have consistently underachieved and failed to reach their potential. What would it look like if mainstream churches fought back against the Religious Right? Picture two hundred of Dr. Brown’s “Red Shirts” smugly descending on innocent families at Charlotte Pride. Out of nowhere, five hundred mainstream, mostly heterosexual Christians appear and surround the theocratic thugs with blue shirts that read: God’s Better Way Love & Acceptance.” These despicable bullies would likely have no idea how to react in such a situation where Christians were calling them “un-
christian.” Instead of the expected rush of nation and the world. It is time to stand up, speak out, and give self-righteous glory, I could see these folks voice to our values. If not now, when? Are slinking off, dazed and ashamed. Of course, this is just a pipe dream. I’ve we going to wait until it is too late and we organized or attended dozens of protests have lost our country? Here are four recent examples of the Reliover the past decade. Time and again, I’m gious Right flexing its politidisillusioned by the lack of cal muscle: support from liberal and • Texas Gov. situation where Religious Right backed presidential candidates are vying to eliminate or reduce social safety nets, persecute immigrants, undermine working people, shred the middle class, turn the poor into destitute beggars, and roll back minority rights. This reluctance to stand up and speak out has created a hazardous vacuum where only the shrill and unreasonable voices of fundamentalism are heard. Instead of the dialogue that many progressives of faith claim to desire, this perceived weakness creates a lopsided right wing monologue, which is having a deleterious effect on our
hate group. Included among the speakers were many radical clerics from the theocratic New Apostolic Reformation. Also known as the Seven Mountains Movement, this group of extremists wants to turn America into a fundamentalist Christian nation. Their aim is to take over the following seven spheres of society that they refer to as mountains: Religion, Media, Government, Family, Education, Business, Arts & Entertainment. • The American Family Association is organizing Pastor Policy briefings in presidential battlegrounds. In these events, candidates prostrate themselves at the feet of conservative pastors in Iowa and elsewhere, pledging to enact their agenda if elected. • Former Christian Coalition director Ralph Reed is making a comeback with a new organization he founded, the Faith and Freedom Coalition. “Our goal is to build a file of 29 million conservative voters,” Reed told the New York Times. “We’ll e-mail them, we’ll call them, we’ll knock on their doors and, if necessary, we’ll drive them to the polls.” • Extreme right wing organizations have been recruiting candidates in the GOP primaries to sign pledges that lock them into inflexible positions, even at the expense of the nation. It is critical that people realize that these zealots have a radically different vision of this country than most Americans. If their power keeps increasing, they will be able to drastically reshape this country. There would be a tremendous loss of freedom, liberty and justice, while bigotry, intolerance and religious conformity would become the law of the land. If the Religious Right can organize and mobilize to stand up for its beliefs in such a robust manner, why can’t the Religious Left? We desperately need to answer this question before Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin defile America and permanently define Christianity.

Searching for a Church By Marsharee Chronicle

y partner and I are church shopping. She grew up in a religious Seventh - Day Adventist household and I grew up Catholic. In my household, although my brothers and I were sent to mass every Sunday, we were not particularly religious. As I got older, I began seeking a personal connection to a higher power. Ten years ago, I left the church to be with my first girlfriend. I had just graduated from college and came back home to South Florida. I didn’t plan to stay, but then I was asked by the local church to lead a ministry of college women. It was there that I met my now ex-girlfriend and decided to be together. We had to leave the church, because we could not be together in a same-sex relationship and remain members. Once we left the church, we felt like condemned souls, so we decided to visit other churches as our way of holding on to some hope of salvation. What we found was condemnation from the pulpit. I remember we attended a back to school event at one church and the guest minister, a nationally known evangelist, spoke passionately to the youth about the evils of homosexuality. That was the last time she and I attended a church service together. Fast forward five years and I am with my current partner. Although we just recently became a couple, we both have been feeling the need to go to church. We have friends who go to the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) and enjoy attending, but we have yet to go. We have, however, visited two churches in the last month. The first one, a Unitarian church, had a small congregation, but felt very comfortable. We arrived just in time to catch the start of the opening song. The music was upbeat, the preacher’s message was poignant, and the fellowship was warm. Following that service my partner stated that although the service was “nice,” she wanted to visit a Baptist church. Well, it turns out that she lives right up the street from a Baptist church. Having grown up
Catholic and then converted to a nondenominational church, I did not know what to expect from a Baptist service. My only frame of reference was what I had seen on television. At any rate, we got up early three weeks ago and went. We should have known something would be amiss when as soon as we pulled up to the curb, the rain started to pour down while the sun continued to shine brightly. As we took our seats, we noticed that the congregation was very diverse in age and ethnicity. We looked around to see if there were any other same sex couples in the congregation. During the portion of the service where we greet each other in fellowship, my partner struck up a conversation with a woman who identified as a lesbian.

My partner asked her if the church was gayfriendly, and the woman said yes. During the sermon, I found myself questioning whether this church was truly gay-friendly or just silent on the issue of homosexuality. At the end of the service, the pastor announced a fundraiser that the church was asking the congregation to take part in, the proceeds of which would benefit a particular pregnancy crisis center. Well, as someone who has advocated for reproductive rights, a red flag went up in my head. I knew that as soon as I got home, I was going to search for the name of that center to see if they were anti-choice. Again, the music was nice, the sermon

was a little long, but okay and the people seemed friendly. I especially liked the woman who as we were leaving came up to me, smiled warmly, and asked if my partner and I were sisters, or just friends. As soon as I got home, I pulled up the information on the chosen charity. It was just as I suspected, the pregrancy crisis center was an anti-choice clinic. We both decided there and then to continue our search. We have not been to another church since then, but we did have a discussion about church. My partner wants to go to church every once in a while, but she does not want it to consume her life or our relationship. I told her that I felt the same way, but I also wanted to find a place where I can get married to my partner if I choose to, baptize my children if I have any, and will be known personally by the pastor at my funeral. She understood. I heard that there will be a screening of a documentary about the founder of the Metropolitan Community Church, Reverend Troy Perry, at Compass on November 19th. Maybe his talk will inspire us to finally visit the local MCC. Marsharee Chronicle is the Health Services Director at Compass Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Palm Beach County. And without a military ID, Smith’s spouse cannot even bring their children on base for medical appointments. Because Smith is working full-time, she cannot easily take time off herself to do so. So she has had to resort to expensive private medical insurance for her children as well as her spouse. Smith is also unable to obtain life insurance through the military for her spouse, which would provide money to cover child care if her spouse who now stays home with the children died. Another problem for some families is that, whereas stepchildren of straight servicemembers become eligible for military benefits, stepchildren gained when a servicemember marries a same-sex spouse do not. Same-sex parents have had to resort to creative ways to get around some of these issues. If the spouse is appointed as the child’s caregiver, for example, he or she might, depending on base policy, be able
to live in base housing, “not as the spouse, but as the child’s caregiver, the same way you could have a nanny come live with you,” said McKean. But DADT repeal will make it easier for the non-military parent to gain some onbase access at critical times. A servicemember will be freer to name a same-sex spouse or partner as a child’s caregiver on a “Family Care Plan” stating who will take care of the children when a servicemember is deployed or dies. This gives the person access to shopping, counseling, and other on-base services on behalf of the children during the servicemember’s deployment. Prior to repeal, gay servicemembers could name a same-sex partner on a Family Care Plan, but they had to be “very careful” in doing so, for fear of triggering a DADT investigation, McKean said. “Having that conversation be out in the open and fully inclusive will be an enormous relief to same-sex families.”

In church, children are taught about saints and apostles whose images appear in paintings and statues. At camp, children are taught about athletic heroes, their photos traded on baseball cards and sportswear. But there is no place that children are taught about people who are “different.” There is no Hall of Fame for LGBT heroes where gays and lesbians can learn about the people who have made an impact on their community. So Malcolm Lazin, a prominent Philadel-

Without life affirming and empowering resources, we are diminished. We must take responsibility to teach our history. Lazin has been doing just that since 2006, when he launched LGBThistorymonth.com on EqualityForum.com an LGBT activism website. Every day in October featured on their website will be an “icon” someone who has distinguished themselves as making significant contributions to LGBT rights. There’s also going to be a video, biography, bibliography, downloadable images and other educational resources, available as well. “This year we are launching two new features,” says Chip Alfred, communications director of Equality Forum. “There is an internal search engine that can access all 186 icons since the inception of the project and now visitors can click on one of hundreds of categories (such as African American, Athletes, Religion, etc.) and see all the icons that resonate with their interests.” Part of the goal of LGBThistorymonth. com is to encourage high schools, colleges and community centers to download the materials and create exhibits. “There are images, bios and posters of each icon,” Alfred says. “And the video is embeddable, like YouTube videos and it’s all free. The project is inspiring and it is really the only vehicle that can teach both youths and adults about LGBT role models.” In 2010, the federal government recognized the project with Secretary Arne Duncan launching LGBT History Month ceremonies at the U.S. Department of Education. Lazin believes this is a major accomplishment, and this year, under the FAIR Education Act, California schools will be required to teach LGBT history. “I don’t know if we had any direct influence on that decision but I know we are reaching more and more people everyday,” Lazin says. And according to statistics he is right. In 2006, there were fewer than 100,000 web hits. In 2010, the site had 6 million hits which was a 6,000 percent increase. LGBT History Month Remembers Teen Suicides

14-year-old gay teen from Buffalo, New York, Jamey Rodemeyer, recently took his life. LGBT History Month Icon Lady Gaga was his inspiration, especially her song “Born This Way.” Jamey, who was constantly bullied in school, felt he “could never escape it.” “Jamey’s suicide is a heartbreaking reminder of the vulnerability of gay teens. Every day in the United States a gay teen’s life ends in suicide. They are bullied and marginalized. While some may say that Jamey took his life, unrelenting homophobia murdered him,” stated Malcolm Lazin, founder and Executive Director of Equality Forum. “LGBT History Month provides role models and empowering life-affirming resources. Equality Forum remembers Jamey and dedicates LGBT History Month to ending these tragedies.” LGBT History Month enhances selfesteem, builds community, and makes the important civil rights statement of the LGBT community’s important national and international contributions. L
ast week a self proclaimed “pirate” Italian blog announced that in a few days time it was going to release a list of 10 homophobic members of the Italian Parliament who happen to be gay. The news spread like wildfire, immediately dividing the country and the gay community itself. Italians, in a most general sense, don’t proclaim their sexuality if it’s homo or bi. Only in recent years has the subject been openly talked about. The Catholic Church continues to exert a tremendous influence on everyday attitudes. Italy and Mediterranean cultures in general are family-oriented societies where the male-macho ethic runs strong. Under these conditions it’s more difficult for gays to come out. Many opt instead to lead a double life. But homosexuality is not illegal. Sadly it is still a taboo subject and an easy target for constant ridicule and occasional violence. The “project” was born “in order to restore justice in a country where gay people have no defense against daily insults and attacks from a hypocritical political cast,” as politicians are often referred to. The intent is to make it clear to the Italian Parliament that hypocrisy and discrimination are no longer passively tolerated or accepted. After the first list of ten names was released Friday, Sept. 23, the blog announced that this was only the beginning of an “outing” campaign and that additional names of more politicians, ecclesiastic figures and media personalities would soon be made public. Those opposed to the initiative claim it is an uncivilized way to go about promoting equality. Some referred to it as an extreme action not in tune with appropriate political culture.
September 28, 2011 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com
But others are saying that the issue is to “ask ourselves why have we reached such a desperate point and what can be done to change the direction of one of the last European bastions of homophobia in politics and everyday life.” Outing is a debatable instrument. It gives rise to issues of privacy, choice, hypocrisy, and harm in addition to sparking debate on what constitutes common good in efforts to combat homophobia and heterosexism. However, when an individual is elected to office he or she loses some of the privileges he/she would have as a regular anonymous citizen.
The LBGT community has a right to defend itself against public figures that abuse their power and influence to support policies which inflict suffering on homosexuals.
Politicians are elected to work and protect their constituency no matter what anybody’s sexual orientation, race, religion, or political affiliations are. Hypocrisy and open discrimination are not acceptable; hence, if these individuals are also gay and homophobic, they deserve to be exposed. The aim and defense of the Italian blog is not only to reveal the hypocrisy of those in the “closets of power” but also to make people
aware of the presence of gays in the political arena, media and the Church, thus showing being gay is not “so utterly offensive that it should never be discussed.” The LBGT community has a right to defend itself against public figures that abuse their power and influence to support policies which inflict suffering on homosexuals. The effectiveness of outing as a political tactic depends on the willingness of the media to report that a person has been outed. The advent of the Internet has made outing public figures much easier. The media today waits for blogs to throw the first stone. That’s what has happened in Italy. Once the blog released the list all major national newspapers carried the story. The honorary president of ArciGay, Italy’s national gay rights organization said that: “The real offense is homophobia and antigay prejudice fueled by the Vatican hierarchy and the politicians who govern the country.” I personally know from experience. I was born in Italy and came to the U.S. for a better and freer tomorrow. How naive. I have been a fool and have been fooled for decades, both by my native country and by my adopted one. My hopes for a better society, my idiotic faith that these disgusting political systems and obnoxious politicians would somehow one day transform and turn our world into a golden paradise have been dashed day in-day out. I have no faith and I have little hope left. The point of outing, as I have defended it, is not to wreak vengeance, not to punish, and not to deflect attention from one’s own debased state. Its point is to avoid degrading oneself. Thus, outing is “both permissible and an expected consequence of living morally,” (Mohr, Richard. Gay Ideas: Outing and Other Controversies, 1992).

Florida Together Conference:
Inspirational Event Leading the Way Norm Kent, Publisher By Norm Kent
L
ast weekend, the Florida Together organization hosted an all day seminar at Florida International University. The theme of the conference was “Different Paths, Same Directions.” It was a spectacular and inspirational event, put together ingeniously by Michael Kenny, a reputable man who has often quietly contributed to the LGBT community of South Florida. The diverse list of speakers included the parents of a soldier slain in Afghanistan to an engaging actor, who initiated the Trailblazer Campaign to help young Hollywood actors come out. The conference rostered speakers from across the country, as varied as a Republican Wyoming legislator who opposed a defense of marriage bill in his home state to a feminist capturing LGBT America in photographs. Our community is as diverse as the rainbow that defines it. From the Executive Director of the Log Cabin Republicans to a communications officer for the White House, this all day program presented a commanding list of compelling speakers. Through the help of sponsorships, many young students from all over the state were able to attend. I was privileged to speak, and honored to have SFGN as one of their media sponsors. The battle for LGBT equality may be won with court battles and legislative enactments, but it will never be fully realized until the hearts and souls of all Americans embrace equality. Keep in mind that 100 years after Abra-
ham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, we still needed Lyndon Baines Johnson to sign the Civil Rights Act. Even then, equality for African Americans moved slowly across the American landscape. For all the achievements we have won these past few years, the majority of America still does not embrace the LGBT community. DADT did not go peacefully into the night, and ENDA has not come warmly to Congress. We still need to keep up the fight. Today the American Family Association is leading a national boycott of Home Depot because of its support for ‘homo’ causes. The Defense of Marriage Act is still the law, and in Iowa the electorate booted three Supreme Court justices for ruling in favor of same-sex marriage. Gays are still not “equal.” Laws and legislatures can pave the

In a moving talk, Lori Wilfahrt gave an impassioned speech about losing her son Andrew, a gay soldier killed in Afghanistan, who was loved and honored by his troops. “He was killed,” she said, “by a bomb that did not discriminate about whether he was straight or gay.” Another young man, Zach Wahls, came to Florida from Iowa after creating a YouTube video that went viral, noting that he grew up “pretty straight for a kid raised by

Hollywood’s Celluloid Closet By James Duke Mason, courtesy of dot 429

Gay actor and dot429 columnist James Duke Mason explores Hollywood’s internalized homophobia.
Dustin Lance Black Out gay actor and activist James Duke Mason, the son of pop star Belinda Carlisle and grandson of late film star James Mason, is on a oneman campaign to fight Hollywood homophobia. In the first of a series of exclusive columns for dot429, he explores how gay insiders are among the most homophobic.
I
’ve experienced first hand the prejudice that so many LGBT entertainers have to face on a daily basis. The difference between me and many others, however, is that I choose not to let it control me. I choose not to be controlled by cynicism and fear, or by the oppressive and dictatorial influence that the Hollywood establishment seems to yield over so many in this town. I know this may sound overly dramatic, but there’s a real conspiracy inside this industry to ensure that the walls that have built “the celluloid closet” do not come down, that the power players continue to tell performers how to live their lives. When I first got back to L.A. in July 2010 to try and become successful as an openly gay actor, I met with different managers and agents about the possibility of them
representing me; some were gay, some were straight. One manager whom I met with, who was gay and considered quite successful among industry circles, went on a huge rant against me after I spoke about my idealistic views and called me all sorts of names, including “naive” and “out of touch.” But the truth is that he’s the one who was out of touch. Soon after my meeting with him, I spoke to Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, and Lance told me that the same manager had told him not to write Milk, the very film that won him an Oscar, for fear of its gay content. It just goes to show that these managers, agents and studio execs really don’t know what they’re talking about when it comes to keeping people in the closet simply to maintain the status quo. I also know gay actors who’ve have been told by their reps that they need to stay closeted and “butch up” in order to make it big. I was particularly disturbed by one case in which an actor, who’s now playing a leading character on a major TV show, was told that he had to go to a vocal coach in order to get rid of his “gay voice.” How much more offensive and twisted could that be?
I also know gay actors who’ve have been told by their reps that they need to stay closeted and “butch up” in order to make it big.
What’s even more troubling is that some of the gay people in the industry are responsible for this as well; they’ve allowed their selfloathing and internalized homophobia to get in the way of their doing the right thing. What they don’t see is that change is coming; if we all speak out on these issues, whether within Hollywood or not, and stand up for what’s right and what’s just, then the walls of oppression will fall.

Over one-half million people have signed the pledge to boycott Home Depot until it agrees to remain neutral in the culture and political war over same-sex marriage. Frankmusik Mixes It Up Pop music-maker on ‘restricted’ straight guys, teaming with Erasure and getting naked for the gays By Chris Azzopardi Photography by Jam Sutton
F
rankmusik goes where no straight man’s gone before. Just look at what he did in 2008, when he disrobed – and bared his bum – for a spread in one of the U.K.’s gay magazines. Then, recently, he got naked again – on a massage table, for a promo that has a bunch of bears giving him a rubdown. Clearly the guy’s an original, which isn’t just evident in his friendliness with the gays – but his music, too. With that, he’s proved that pop isn’t just a woman’s world, mixing music for Lady Gaga and Pet Shop Boys and releasing his first album, Complete Me, two years ago. The 25-year-old follows up his electro-pop debut with Do It in the AM, but it’s not the only project with his name attached to it – he also produced Erasure’s new album, Tomorrow’s World. On the road with the synth-pop legends during their first U.S. tour in five years, Frankmusik chatted about how working with Erasure was his “calling,” being an anomaly in the music business and why he wishes more straight men would let go of their inhibitions.

I
t’s really no big deal to run into a porn star in South Florida. Heck, one of the biggest names in the industry lives literally around the corner—and he’s hot, even when he’s fully clothed and shopping at Publix! This weekend, Bourbon St. Pub and New Orleans House are bringing in a multitalented porn star from the West Coast, DJ Pornstar, for a weekend-long event, Pornstars in Paradise. This guy looks great in what little clothes he wears in the booth and his music is even better. The bars will also be flying in some of your other favorites from around the country for a party that is not to be missed. So, if hot tunes and hot men are your thing, it’s time to hit the road for Key West. For more information, go to BourbonStPub.com or NewOrleansHouseKW.com. Sticking around this weekend? 21st Century Quotes on Being Gay in America
“I’ve said that we would not be getting married until everyone in this county had the right to get married…We live in this great country that is about freedom. It is defined by our freedom and equality and yet we allow this discrimination to go on everyday and that’s not what we’re about.” – Actor Brad Pitt on marriage equality

Gay Christian Musician Visits MCC in Palm Beach Justin Ryan hopes to spread the message “it does get better” with music and faith
By Donald Cavanaugh

“I
know it gets better,” says Justin Ryan. “I’ve been there.” And when Ryan tells you “I’ve been there,” believe it. Thrown out at 17 when his father learned he was gay, Ryan dropped his last name, “Vaughn,” so as not to “bring shame” on the family when he started singing in a local MCC church in his home town, Paducah, Kentucky. Now Ryan brings his “I’ve Been There” concert tour to MCC of the Palm Beaches, 4857 Northlake Blvd, Palm Beach Gardens on October 1 and 2 with a concert Saturday night at 7 p.m. and worship service on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The tour launched in March and offers a special program to honor and remember all the youth who took their lives last year after being bullied for their actual or perceived sexuality. “It’s to let kids know that we’ve been there too and they need to hang on,” Ryan said. “For every six people who say bad things about us there are ten who want to help us. We have to get that message out there.” And Ryan should know. On the street at 17, he managed to survive and finish high school by living with friends and generous
families in the area. He fell into a relationship with an older man and lived with him for about 3 years until he cheated. That was the last straw for Ryan who had been physically, mentally and emotionally abused by his partner. “I attempted suicide,” he said, matter of

factly. “He came home and found me. It’s been a real journey. But I didn’t know any better,” he continued. “He was the only openly gay person I knew and I had no role models. Paducah isn’t exactly a gay Mecca.” Nor might one expect it to be. Located on the Ohio River in the far western end of the state, Paducah has a population of about 25,000. The city’s website brags “31.1 percent of the population 25 years of age and older in Paducah have obtained their high school degreee [sic].” About the time his abusive relationship was ending, a co-worker in a local retail store suggested that Ryan attend the MCC church in Paducah. After horrible rejection by his childhood faith community, Ryan wasn’t sure about another church until his friend told him it was gay. “And even then….,” he said his voice trailing away. “What a moving experience I had,” he said. “After people in my world telling me God hated me I realized this was not the case. Church and society may reinforce bad feelings but it doesn’t have to be that way and it’s not God’s way.” Through the church Ryan met Marsha Stevens, a long time member of the gay Christian music movement who invited him to Nashville to work on an album with
her. He subsequently moved to Sarasota to continue to work with her. He’s done a lot of recording with a wide range of performers both secular and religious. He’s worked with Porter Wagner, host of the Grand Ole Opry and the man who discovered Dolly Parton. He even has featured songs on an Opry Christmas album. He spent a year on the road touring the continental United States, Mexico and Canada. Now he lives in Nashville with Cody, his partner of two years. “Justin’s ‘I’ve been there’ concert works perfectly with our new “Generation i” campaign to reach out to LGBT people ages 18 to 35,” said Jeremiah Cummings, Music Minister at MCC of the Palm Beaches. In addition to his concert he’s playing for Sunday service, which is featuring a guest speaker from Sunshine Cathedral, Rev. Brian Hutchison. The concert and service are free and open to the public. There’s a post service pool party on Sunday for anyone under 35. For information call 561-775-5900 or visit MCCpb.org or visit JustinRyanOnline. com for more on Justin Ryan. att Livadary has always wanted to make movies. The 27-year-old Los Angeles native was living in the entertainment capital of the world, developing feature films for a new production company and boasted previous experience at one of the industry’s preeminent talent agencies. But, that wasn’t the same as being behind the camera calling the shots. “I had a great early career and worked at some really good places, but development was the aspect that I was passionate about,” he recalls. “If you ever want to direct, you have to do it.You have to do it every day.” Livadary originally set his sights on a scripted television about the rodeo circuit. He had always been fascinated with rodeo and other “antiquated” forms of entertainment that have remained relatively unchanged over the century, like the circus. He envisioned a show “like Friday Night Lights, but set at the rodeo,” he says, “focusing on American values and
28
the grit of what our country is.” A year ago, he left his job and began traveling the professional rodeo circuit, sort of a research trip. Livadary immediately became immersed in rodeo culture. “It was fascinating….the culture, the families, the dress. It’s bad ass and dangerous and kind of insane that this sport still exists in modern times,” he explains. While in Colorado, he noticed a number of gay couples in the crowd at a local rodeo and “started chatting them up.” He learned that there was a gay rodeo circuit in the U.S. and immediately realized his scripted show didn’t have the potential that a documentary about gay rodeo would have. And that’s how “Queens & Cowboys: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo” was born. Livadary had already faced a little culture shock on the straight circuit—he found himself ridiculed for arriving in a Toyota and once wearing khakis—but he wasn’t quite prepared for the gay rodeo. “I was really surprised. Despite the drag queens and the campy events, it’s a regular

rodeo,” says Livadary. “I was expecting some parody of rodeo, but it’s totally not that. The cowboys and cowgirls are good and talented.” In fact, he discovered many of the most experienced gay cowboys and girls also compete on the straight rodeo circuit, although some are not open about their sexuality due to the conservative culture. What impressed him most about gay rodeos was the volunteer spirit with each event drawing hundreds of volunteers and proceeds benefitting charity. Livadary has invested much time and his own money on the project and plans to continue shooting through the International Gay Rodeo Association finals in October. More than half of the footage shown in the trailer of the documentary was shot in Florida. After October Livadary will shoot follow-up interviews and begin editing, hoping to release the film sometime next spring. He is proud to have remained independent and can “make the film I want to make,” but admits that it’s an expensive proposition. Even minimizing expenses by sleeping on friends’ couches and using minimal crew, the filming stage of the project is pushing $35,000. Editing, licensing, archiving and other costs will push $200,000. “There are so many ridiculous costs involved with making a film. It’s frustrating,” Livadary says. Now he’s turning to the gay community and hoping for small donations to keep the

– Matt Livadary project alive. Supporters can donate from $1 to $1000 on Kickstarter.com to help Livadary raise the final few thousand dollars required to complete filming. He remains optimistic: “My experience on this film has shown me that no matter how open-minded we might consider ourselves, we can all use more exposure to lifestyles and cultures that differ from our own. My goal is to deliver this exposure through the unexpected impact the IGRA has made on my life in this uniquely American adventure. I hope to tell a rich story that provides the same eye-opening experience to a global audience, both LGBT and straight.” Search for the documentary at Kickstarter. com for more information. FrankMusik Not being a gentleman drives me crazy. I think being respectful and well-mannered is one of the most attractive things that any human can be.
continued from page 19
Hey, Frank, how are you? Hot. Not hot in a physical sense. Like, it’s actually hot. I already know you’re hot physically, anyway. Thank you, sir. Compliments will get you everywhere. (Laughs) Where does mine get me? This is a recorded conversation. I’ll tell you off the record some other time. How did the title track, “Do It in the AM,” come about? It’s about losing it in my mind. I’ve never really spoken about this in an interview properly because I don’t really think anyone’s really been highbrow enough to engage with it but, being creative, I like having the creative freedom at night, because it’s like my little secret. I’m making the party in my studio, and I’m making the songs that people want to party to. So do you keep an alcohol stash in the studio? No, no. I don’t drink. Well, hardly. It just doesn’t agree with me. I used to drink like a fish, but I just get heartburn. I’m getting old, man. And the hangovers – I actually cannot stand the concept of a hangover. What’s your a.m. routine? Shower, shit, shave. No, wait – shit, shower, shave. You don’t want to shit after you’ve already had a shower. The three S’s. Sometimes you can do four S’s if you’re lucky, which is sex, shit, shower, shave. That is much more likely to happen these days since my missus has moved in. How did your move from London to L.A. influence the album? Just not being in London, being in a new city. I haven’t got any really massive circle of friends or anything. I came here to experience emptiness. European culture is very clustered, very pedestrianized and everyone is very closely knit. I love L.A. for its vastness. It’s devoid of any real sort of social integration because it’s so spread out, and I love that. I love the fact that I can be really anti-social and obnoxious in my studio and just concentrate on work. You’ve gotten naked for the gays on a couple occasions. Do your gay
friends call you a tease, because I think you might be? I could be a tease; it depends on if you fancy me or not. The main thing is, I’m having fun. That’s such a shit thing to say, but it is actually that. Straight male artists are restricting themselves through their sexuality, and I think you should just be open to anything, especially in press. If someone has an idea and it’s tasteful, yeah, I’ll do it. Fuck it. When I did the nude photo shoot, that was for male eating disorders. I wanted to support that cause, and if it meant a few famous guys getting their clothes off and talking about their own experiences with eating and their health, then fuck – any day dude, any day. Why is it such an issue for straight guys to open up like that? You have to ask them, because I’m definitely not one of them. I think it was because I was brought up by my mom; I didn’t have a dad, so I didn’t have, like, this tenacious male figure in my life that was trying to make me fit a certain mold or anything. My mom sent me to ballet school and poetry recital classes. I mean, I was dancing around in a fucking leotard! I didn’t know any different. If you don’t know anything different, it doesn’t mean anything. It’s imposed on you, this kind of straightness. I feel so bad for guys, because you have this culture where people’s gender has to fit into a demographic, which is just stupid. Men are just as expressive as women. I was just lucky enough that somebody as intelligent as my mother brought me up that way. It’s a combination of common sense and not sort of digesting the bullshit that’s fed to you in culture. I wish more men were expressive because, I’ll tell you, there’d be a lot less trouble in the world.

Do people ever think you’re gay? I hope so, because that means I’m surrounded by stupid people that I can manipulate. That’d be nice. Who are your boy crushes? George Clooney. He’s an absolute gentleman and a brilliant, brilliant human being and very good at what he does. And he’s just really classy about it. I love classy guys.
You’re an anomaly in pop music, because the genre is so dominated by young females – and you’re a straight white guy. Why do you think there are so few like you in pop music? Once again, it goes back to what it’s like to be a man these days. Why is it that we feel that the only type of males that should succeed in this market are ones that come from a boy band? Or they’ve got to be a rapper, or they’ve got to be some beardy guy holding an acoustic guitar. Apparently dancing around and singing pop songs is only reserved for people like Usher and black culture, which I think is bullshit. White guys can do it too, but I think we’re having a huge identity crisis. For the complete article, go to: sfgn.com/frankmusik

Top Shelf Telegrams Reading Me, the Enhanced Edition by Ricky Martin – the pop star whom first bridged the gap between Latin music & the Englishspeaking world bridged another gap by coming out last year. Tough for a performer who has much appeal with…the ladies. His book, which I reviewed last Spring, was insightful, & made me feel bad about an earlier column I wrote lambasting him when the coming out portion of his autobiography was revealed. This enhanced edition includes his reaction to the book’s reception, which reached five on the New York Times bestseller list & was at number one on the Spanish language hardcover bestseller list for nine weeks. Martin’s appearance on Oprah in which he introduced his twin boys to the public and – what was most lacking in the original version – pictures are also included! Yes, there is even a photo from his Menudo days…I want the aqua marine shirt! With new chapters discussing honesty & creativity after his coming out, clearly it’s always the best for your career, family & life. The book hits shelves on Oct. 4, so you might want to visit Amazon. com to preorder Me, or Yo as it is in Spanish.
Going Dry Tortugas National Park & Fort Jefferson – some 70 miles due west of Key West lies America’s most remote National Park. One must go by boat or seaplane, making it one of the most least-visited visited National Park possessions. With miles of ocean vistas, migratory birds, aqua marine waters perfect for snorkeling, this is a place I’ve wanted to visit since coming to Florida. Discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1513 the Dry Tortugas were named after the turtles – in Spanish, tortugas – which populated the island. Those turtles weren’t anti-drinking, the word “Dry” denotes there is no fresh water on the island. The fort has been there since 1846, when it was built with some 16 million bricks! While the fort was never actually finished its original purpose was to control navigation into the vast Gulf of Mexico and protect the mouth of the Mississippi River from piracy. I am quite the history & architecture buff…so that part I am looking forward to! We are set to leave at 7 a.m. Saturday morning, on the Yankee Ferry, for a two hour-sail which provides a Continental breakfast & lunch as well! I am deathly afraid of going under water but perhaps I will try to be a real Floridian & give snorkeling a try. Sail into YankeeFreedom.com to learn more about Dry Tortugas excursions.

Preparing Peasant Diet – Whole grain pasta is a healthy alternative to white pasta, an affordable staple & base for leftovers! Quick sauce – slice 6 Roma tomatoes into 1/8 chunks – 2 tbs of olive oil – 2 garlic cloves – 1 small, diced onion – sea salt & pepper to taste – toss in a Dutch oven – pop into oven with lid at 400 degrees. Remove after 20 minutes. On stovetop add 1 cup of red wine – few sprigs of fresh basil & parsley – cook ten minutes on medium heat. Boil ½ lbs whole grain ziti, remove from water after 8 minutes with slotted spoon, add about 2 cups of pasta to sauce. The ziti will be starchy enough to thicken the sauce. Pasta tip – if cooking for one boil up a ½ lbs of pasta each week, if cooking for two, boil a whole pound. Store in plastic with 2 tbs olive oil, shake so contents don’t stick. Italian cooking, known as “cucina povere” means “peasant diet,” perfect for our economy! With a base of sautéed onion, garlic, & extra-virgin olive oil, add in 1 cup veggies, 1 cup wine or broth, & any leftover, cooked meat or seafood, reduce by 1/4th then add pasta a cupful at a time, until you’ve reached your desired pasta-to-sauce ratio. Reheat for 3 minutes, always finish on stovetop with grated cheese & fresh pepper. Buon appetito!
Imbibing Antinori Scalabrone 2007, Bolgheri Rosato – This Italian rosato, comes from a family who knows their wine. The 26th generation leads their vineyards & wineries today in the person of Marchese Piero Antinori but while their presence in Tuscany is fascinating his rosato is quenching. There is something magical about the happy, deep pink of this wine. Before you even open the bottle on hot days, you’ll feel cool & refreshed, & imagine yourself sitting in a villa garden just looking at the bottle glowing peony pink in the sun. The fruity aroma brings refreshing hints of raspberries, a hint of wild roses, & a hint of summer grass.Yet, it brings a little tang on the palate, & leaves a luscious fruity aftertaste. While I have reviewed rosés before which are “heavier” & can withstand a cube of ice or two, I do not suggest it with this wine. This is undoubtedly one of my favorites & will be accompanying me out of town this weekend…not only because its color complements Key West & can be had for $15 per bottle, but because it’s perfect for impromptu celebrations such as the first drink after the four hour drive! Available at the Best Seller, 1408 NE 26th St., Wilton Manors, call 954-630-2080 for tasting times.

1955 - DAUGHTERS OF BILITIS The first Lesbian organization, is formed by four Lesbian couples, including Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin. As the DOB gained members, their focus shifted to providing support to women who were afraid to come out, by educating them about their rights and gay history. Historian Lillian Faderman declared, “Its very establishment in the midst of witch hunts and police harassment was an act of courage, since members always had to fear that they were under attack, not because of what they did, but merely because of who they were.”

Just a few of the many varieties of bears attending Key West BearFest.
By R.E. Frederique
T
his SFGN reporter, with an ironic nickname of Goldilocks, traveled a long way to an exotic tropical island. He arrived late at night and immediately fell asleep in his comfortable, air-conditioned room at the Oasis Guest House. There, he dreamed of walking out the door of his room to swim in a secluded pool and relax in the hot tub. In the morning of his dream, he went to have a complimentary breakfast surrounded by hot bears. Each bear or bear couple had their own plans for the day, no doubt taking advantage of all the bear discounts that were being offered all over the island. Goldilocks then wandered down the street to the Island House for Men. What he saw there could only happen in a fairy tale or a dream: a large swimming pool filled with all kinds of hot bears. There were papa bears, queen bears, and even young cub bears. Wherever he looked, there were more and more bears. There were big rotund bears, hot and bothered bears, sexy muscle bears, cute teddy bears and even bare bottom bears. So many bears that just about anyone could find a bear that’s just right for him. The dream continued into the evening, when Goldilocks went to eat at the Braza Lena Brazilian Steakhouse. Again surrounded by bears, he had one of the best meals of his life. It was all you can eat with incredible side dishes and a salad bar. The meat was, well, dreamlike. The Caipirinha was strong and delicious, as a real drink should be. Mmm…more Caipirinha please… and the dream spun on. There were all sorts of activities for the bears to take part in, like a Dirty Fur Foam Party at the Bourbon Street Pub and parties like the Let the Fur Fly Tea Dance, the Pool Party and Pig Roast, the Bear-e-Oke, the Bear Drag Show, the Ruff Riders Pool Party and several Happy Ending Parties. It was all too much for Goldilocks, who had to pinch himself to try and wake up. But when he did, he found that it wasn’t a dream at all. It all happened this weekend at the 2011 Key West BearFest. The moral of the story is: When bears get together, it’s like a dream come true.
