Alfred ‘Chad’ McMurray was killed in August 2010; case still unsolved for about a year, and Prewitt felt he had met the love of his life. McMurray was passionate about cooking and was completing a culinary degree at Le Cordon Bleu inMiramar. After the slaying, though, it became apparent the success McMurray had in pursuing his passion did not carry over into another area of his life: his battle with drug addiction. Detectives have said they think more than one person was involved in McMurray’s slaying, and that the killers had some connection to drugs. Prewitt, a web developer, was out of town on business the night it happened. He said he called McMurray and they chatted about the night’s TV lineup. The complex, in the 1900 block of Northwest 43rd Terrace, is in a neighborhood with a reputation for streetlevel drug-dealing, in recent years the site of a string of shootings and at least three homicides. Detectives have gotten few tips from people in that neighborhood — or elsewhere — about McMurray’s killing. “This is a hard case as far as leads go,” said Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detective Luis Rivera. Prewitt and some friends, though, hope someone will come forward. They are offering a reward through Broward Crime Stoppers for anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest. The reward stands at $5,000. Prewitt, who moved to Atlanta six months after the murder, plans to return to South Florida next month, to repeat the painful process of examining details of the case with detectives. He wants to make sure no one forgets Chad McMurray. “I’ve been grieving for him longer than I got to know him,” Prewitt said. Authorities ask anyone with information to contact Detective Luis Rivera at 954-321-4210 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-4938477. SFGN and Sun-Sentinel are media partners.

The Gathering

A multi-faceted taste of spirituality

Bishop S.F. Makalani-MaHee

By A. Sebastian Fortino

S

ome of South Florida’s Spiritual Teachers and Ministers will be shedding a new light with the launch of The Gathering at Wilton Drive’s newest addition Global Vibes, 2161 Wilton Drive, on Sunday’s from 3-5 p.m., and began on October 2. Global Vibes is a new holistic and spiritual center owned by Lillie Harris. The purpose of The Gathering is to empower attendees to ask what do we fall back on when we hit bumps in our spiritual journey? When we are thrown back into people,

places, and things we know will not work for us, how do we fall back on what strengthens and empowers us? The weekly series is, in part, the work of local theologian Bishop S.F. Makalani-MaHee. “This is a taste test, a buffet of spirituality,” said MaHee recently. “We know people are facing a lot of challenges right now and what we hope to do is discuss forms of spiritual understanding which will bring comfort to the distressed.” The first incarnation of the series is entitled “Fall Back,” and will examine how people maintain spiritual connections in the midst of daily challenges. Each Sunday a teacher will share their experiences at The Gathering. Cynthia Segal led the first session on Oct., 2, speakers have been appointed for each following Sunday of the month. A donation of $10 is suggested. Visit BishopMaHee.com to contact the “Bish” as she is known and learn more information.

Gay Congressman Announces Birth of Son…

R

ep. Jared Polis of Colorado has announced the birth of a son, making him the only openly gay member of Congress to be a parent. The Democratic congressman’s press office made the announcement that Polis and his partner, Marlon Reis, had become the proud dads of Caspian Julius, who was born

last Friday and weighed in at 8 pounds, 12 ounces. The announcement asked wellwishers for “nice thoughts for Caspian, humankind, the planet and the universe.” It was unclear whether the baby was adopted or born through a surrogate. Polis is one of three openly gay members of Congress. He’s serving his second term in office.

Virginia Exec’s Murder Still A Mystery One Year Later Crimestoppers raises reward money

By Norm Kent

A

little over a year has now past since the body of murder victim Sam Del Brocco, the CEO of Alexandria-based PCI Communications, was found in his million dollar condo located at 1770 Bay Drive in Pompano Beach. But Broward Sheriff’s office deputies have recently advised that a one time stalled investigation now has “new legs.” Del Brocco, raised in South Florida and a graduate of Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory in Hollywood, had at different times in his life also been a school psychologist and part time entertainer. The BSO announced that the reward money for his killer’s capture has now been raised to $25,000. The slain businessman’s body was found September 12, 2010, not long after he was last seen having dinner alone at Kelley’s Landing in Fort Lauderdale. There are reasons to believe that the killer was another male, who he may have invited into his home for a spontaneous, late night hookup. Detectives investigating Del Brocco’s past found out that he kept many of these possible homosexual alliances private and hidden, leading a different life in Alexandria, Virginia, where his known associations featured a long-time female social companion. However, the bulk of Del Brocco’s estate, it

turns out, was in left in trust for a younger, male business associate at his company. PCI Communications is now represented by his successor, Robert Sprague, who said at the time of Del Brocco’s murder “Sam built PCI into a great company filled with talented and committed people. While his death represents a huge loss, we know that he would want us to carry on.” Del Brocco lived on Windsor Avenue in Alexandria for many years, where he was very popular with his neighbors. Prior to his death, he had just bought a home in the Fort Hunt neighborhood of Fairfax County and moved there. During his life, he recorded three record albums; made dozens of national television appearances, and performed live with his eight-piece band in hotels and resorts from Miami’s Fontainebleau to Caesar’s in Atlantic City. He co-founded PCI Communications in 1986 with his then-musical director/keyboard player Bob Sprague. “It may have been a random act, or something more than that. We are continuing to investigate the killing,” says BSO homicide investigator Tim Duggan. “If you have a lead, we want to know.” Duggan can be reached at 954-321-4210. Census Fails Math Test Same-sex couples scored inaccurately

Top Ten Same-sex Couple States

By Lisa Keen

T

he Census Bureau on Tuesday released a new estimate for the number of same-sex couple households in the United States in 2010, and it is almost 40 percent fewer than it actually counted. But it’s 80 percent higher than the number counted in the 2000 Census. And the number of same-sex couple households represented less than one percent of all households in the United States. These were some of the conclusions reported by Census Bureau officials in a telephone press conference with reporters September 27. The data is based on the Bureau’s own analysis of responses to household types on the 2010 Census from 50 states, the District of Columbia, but an analysis deemed credible by the Williams Institute. According to the data, the Census Bureau counted 901,997 same-sex couple households in the 2010 survey, but it believes only 646,464 of those are really same-sex couples. The other 255,533, said Census Bureau official Martin O’Connell, are heterosexual couples whose Census forms inadvertently misidentified the gender of one of the partners. O’Connell said the Census Bureau based its “preferred” estimate on a complicated analysis of the first names of the partners in same-sex couples. If both partners in a couple had very clearly male or very clearly female names like Thomas and John or Deborah and Elizabeth the same-sex couple designation was considered very reliable. But if one partner or spouse in a same-sex couple had a name like Leslie or Jessie, the same-sex designation was considered unreliable and the couple was re-classified as a heterosexual couple. That’s because the Census Bureau discovered there were a great deal more unreliable gender-name designations on forms that were filled out by in-person “enumerators” Census representatives who visited households that failed to mail back their standard Census form. The form used by these in-person enumerators, said O’Connell, were problematic and contributed to the likelihood that the enumerator might check off the wrong gender box while filling out the form. “We only used names where 95 percent or more of the time that name was associated with being either a male or female,” said O’Connell, “so we tried to limit those

New York came in 12th with 0.892 percent. Florida ranked 14th with 0.884 percent. Georgia ranked 16th with 0.832 percent. Illinois ranked 28th with 0.671 percent. [uncertain] areas by basically taking a very conservative aspect by only removing from the same-sex couple universe those names which had an extremely high probability of being of a sex that was opposite of what they reported.” Responses reporting gender were considered most accurate in 12 states and the District of Columbia. Those 12 states included Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Minnesota, and New York. They had “inconsistent name-sex reporting” in 6 to 26 percent of same-sex couples. Eight states had the worst accuracy (between 38 and 50 percent inconsistencies), including Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia, Montana, Wyoming, and South and North Dakotas. The correction process had a dramatic effect on the number of same-sex couple households counted in many individual states. For instance, California’s original data count was 125,516 same-sex couple households, but its corrected, or “preferred,” estimate totaled only 98,153 a loss of 27,363, or almost 22 percent. Massachusetts’ number dropped from 26,049 in raw numbers to 20,256 in corrected numbers a loss of 5,793 couples, or 22 percent. Florida dropped from 65,601 to 48,496 a loss of 17,105 couples, or 26 percent. New York dropped from 65,303 to 48932 a loss of 16,371 couples, or 25 percent. Georgia dropped from 29,844 to 21,318 a loss of 8,526 couples or 28.5 percent. Michigan dropped from 21,782 to 14,598 a loss of 7,184, or 33 percent. Texas dropped from 67,413 to 46,401 a loss of 21,012 couples, or 31 percent. The Census Bureau used data from Texas to illustrate how well first names corresponded with the gender identification and, therefore, how reliable the designation of same-sex couples held up. Of 31,763 households designated originally as a male-male couple, only 14,439 (45 percent) qualified as including “highly likely male” that is, both partners or spouses had first names that are almost certainly male names, such as Thomas or John. O’Connell said the problem with the inperson form wasn’t discovered until late in 2009 too late for the Census Bureau to correct and print out new forms in time for use in 2010. Gary Gates, a respected expert in LGBT demographics at the Williams Institute, said the Census Bureau’s procedures are both “credible” and “substantially more accurate” than the numbers released on a state-by-state basis over the summer. “I was part of a team that identified this continued on page 32

Helping Aging LGBT Parents By Dana Rudolph

H

ow do we help our parents as they age? For adults with non-LGBT parents, there are plenty of resources on how to help parents through the various legal, financial, and emotional issues of growing old. Search the Web or your favorite online bookstore for “aging parents,” and you’ll be swamped with results. For adults who wish to help their LGBT parents, however, the resources are far fewer. And while many of the issues older LGBT and non-LGBT people face are the same, some are not. Let’s not forget: LGBT parents have been choosing to have children together for over 30 years. Those who had children in previous non-LGBT relationships may have had them even before that. Those “children” now in their 30s or older have parents who, if not in their “golden years,” are at least starting to turn silver.

Scott French, program manager for the Caring and Preparing program of Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE), said one of the most important things adults with LGBT parents can do is “to have conversations about making sure that your parents have a health-care proxy, a power of attorney, a living will,” and a document (called by various names) about what they want done with their bodies after death. “These are important for everyone, but they’re really important for LGBT older adults, especially if they’re partnered,” he said. Unlike opposite-sex spouses, “there is no person who automatically gets to make those decisions” for LGBT older adults. He also encourages people to talk with their parents about a will. Many people think they don’t need a will if they aren’t wealthy, French said, but noted, “Wills aren’t predicated on somebody who has wealth. They’re

essential to be able to dictate what you want to happen to your possessions, whatever they may be.” And for people in same-sex couples, “you don’t always have the same protections, so it’s always better to have it in writing.” Children of LGBT parents should also discuss with their parents how the finances will be distributed in the will and whose name they are in now, he said. He suggested talking with a lawyer and/or a financial planner “to ensure that if they’re partnered, the surviving partner is taken care of, because inheritance rules oftentimes don’t apply.” Pensions and other items that naturally transfer to an opposite-sex spouse may not transfer to a same-sex one, or may not do so without a financial penalty, even if they are legally married or have a civil union or domestic partnership. Attorneys and financial planners may be able to set up trusts or recommend various other strategies to protect assets and avoid taxes. SAGE encourages people to complete the above documentation even if they are legally married or in a civil union or domestic partnership. French explained, “You never know what you might run into or if you’ll run into a service provider who isn’t aware of what the laws are.” He noted, however, that many people “are very unprepared,” even though most of the documents are “very simple.” All except for a will “can be done without a lawyer,” although some may still need notarization. Another big concern for the elderly is long-term care, which could include nursing homes, in-home care, or other care options with varying levels of assistance. For those with LGBT parents, French said, “I think the biggest concern is fear of discrimination.” He suggested, “If at all possible, partner with your parents to try to find a place, and go with them on visits to places, because you both are going to want to be comfortable.” The federally-funded National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, which SAGE manag-

es, offers various tips on how to find LGBTfriendly care, including looking for places that advertise in LGBT publications, have LGBT people represented in their materials, or have been recommended by friends. Children of LGBT parents may also encounter problems working with service providers if they are not the legal children of one of the parents. Single parents with non-biological/non-adoptive children should consider naming them in documents such as a power of attorney, health care proxy, living will, and the like, French said. As for when adults should raise any of these issues with their parents, French advised, “Sooner rather than later.” “While the initial conversation might be uncomfortable,” he said, “it’s actually much easier to have these conversations when there isn’t a crisis,” such as a heart attack or diagnosis of an illness. That way, “you aren’t then tying these things directly to mortality.” A better approach, he said, is having an everyday conversation and asking, “I’m just wondering, do you have stuff in place, in the event that there might be an emergency down the road?” And while LGBT parents should have their documentation in place as soon as they have children, if not before, French said, “that’s not the way it really happens” in many cases. All adults should therefore have a conversation with their parents “just to see if they have things in order.” Additional resources to help caregivers assist LGBT elders are on the SAGE Web site (sageusa.org), the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging (lgbtagingcenter.org), and the AARP LGBT portal (aarp.org/ pride). The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has additional information on policy issues affecting LGBT elders (thetaskforce.org/issues/aging). Symposium on Aging: Exploring the Needs of LGBT Seniors By Jesse Monteagudo

O

ur society is youth-oriented and the LGBT community is even more so. This is equally true in South Florida, which has a large population of retirees of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The Miami Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC), in collaboration with Community Partners, hosted its first Symposium on Aging in Miami on Sept. 24 to educate and explore the issues related to LGBT seniors. “One of the least addressed or understood demographics is our older adult population,” said Steve Adkins, MDGLCC President. “The Symposium on Aging seeks to open a discussion and create an understanding of the needs and expectations of this powerful and growing segment of the LGBT community.” “Because of the growing aging population we needed to do something to address our specialized issues in addition to the regular issues of aging that we all face,” says Vicki Brail, geriatric care manager (GeriatricCareMiami.com) and Chairperson of the Symposium on Aging. “The purpose of this Symposium is to bring knowledge to the community so they can begin planning to take care of themselves and their families as they age.” In his opening remarks, Adkins struck a similar note: “This Conference will assist in creating the kind of dialogue necessary if we are to create a place where the needs [of LGBT seniors] are met,” he said. Though the Symposium on Aging was the work of professional members of MDGLCC, the event itself was open to the public. As a result, many of the 75 attendees were concerned community members. Speakers addressed important issues of concern to LGBT seniors in a series of sessions on “Health Care Continuum;” “Estate, Trust & Tax Planning;” “Out and Aging;” and “How We Age: A Doctor’s Journey into the Heart of Growing Old.” The Keynote Speaker was the famed attorney Richard C. Milstein, who warned his listeners to “Plan . . . or Else.” In his address, Milstein spoke about the legal issues that he specializes in, including guardianship,

trust, probate matters and elder abuse. Another speaker was Michael Adams, Executive Director of the LGBT senior advocacy group SAGE (SageUSA.org). Founded in the 1970’s as Senior Action in a Gay Environment, SAGE now stands for Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders. “Aging is an issue that has not received the attention that it deserves in our community. So it is so inspiring to see Miami leaders stepping up to the plate,” Adams said in his address. “This Symposium is perfectly timed because the country is aging at an extraordinarily rapid rate. This demographic change means that we as a community are facing a challenge of historic proportions, not only because there are issues and difficulties that in general come with aging, but because LGBT older people face a particularly acute set of challenges as we age. And those challenges are what SAGE is all about and, I think, what this program is all about.” Adams continued: “a population that, because of historic stigma and discrimination, is largely closeted and came of age at a time when it was much more difficult to be LGBT.” This is “an elder community that is twice as likely to be single and living alone and four times as likely to be aging without adult children,” which means that LGBT se-

niors often lack care givers. Furthermore, “the law, public policy and aging policy in this country does not treat LGBT older people fairly in a whole variety of respects.” According to the SAGE report, “Improving the Lives of LGBT Older Adults,” which was the basis of Adams’s speech, gay seniors are less financially secure, find it more difficult to achieve good health and health care, and are more likely to face social isolation. Adams compared a straight married couple to a lesbian couple with similar income to show how their prospects differ as they got older. Not wanting to end his remarks on such a negative note, Adams went on to talk about what SAGE and its partners are doing to meet those challenges, and to “improve the lives, the prospects, and the opportunities of LGBT Seniors.” In addition to the speakers, the Symposium on Aging offered businesses and non-profit organizations an opportunity to promote their products and services. Alternative Home Health Care (AlternativeHomeHealth.com) is one such organization. According to Belinda Paez, Director of Community Relations and Marketing, “Alternative Home Health Care is a private duty, custodial care service. We provide home health aids in private homes, assisted living facilities, independent living facilities.”

LGBT seniors, Paez continues, have “special needs that we have the capability to address. It is understanding a lifestyle. It is being respectful of that lifestyle. It is incorporating the greater community to build the relationships that benefits our clients.” Also present at the Symposium was Robin Korth. Publisher and Creator of Insights on Aging (InsightsOnAging.com): “Insights on Aging started out as an online magazine and has since become a philosophy for living,” Korth says. “Think about it: What’s the one thing we are all doing? We are all aging. What’s the one thing none of us are doing well? Living. So I am all about living with your heart and soul wide open, kicking ass and taking no prisoners and learning how to live really well.” Korth conducts “workshops and seminars where I talk about the fact that we can change our lives by simply changing the way we think and the way we come at life.” This is good advice, no matter how old you are. Vicki Brail hopes that this Symposium on Aging will “be an annual event. We are working with the University of Miami to do surveys on the aging population and we hope that this will be a part of it.” Visit GoGayMiami.com for more information about MDGLCC and its programs.

habits that suggest his true orientation. And we showcase another gay president — and his partner. And then there’s the gay man wrote the drill book and maneuvers that brought order to a rag tag Revolutionary Army and led us to victory. This project has been a labor of love and our writers from across the country deserve our gratitude. So, next week and all through October, read PGN’s salute to our community’s history and take pride that your community was among those who founded and kept this country together.

Uncovering America’s gay history By Mark Segal

N

ext week’s PGN (The Philadelphia Gay News), along with 30 newspapers across the country, will begin to celebrate October’s as Gay History Month. This is the largest gay history project of any type, anywhere ever: Our combined print run alone is over 650,000. The 30 newspapers and magazines are in every major city in America and, with our web traffic, the numbers are staggering. Our newspaper has been involved with this project since the beginning and, each year, I sometimes feel that the community doesn’t really care. But all of a sudden this year, there is enthusiasm like I’ve never seen before. And that is borne out with those numbers. And with what the writers discovered. We clearly make the case that historians have hidden — closeted — the LGBT community’s contributions to building and preserving this country. This year, there are no living celebrities involved with the project. In past years, we’ve had exclusive interviews with Sir Elton John, Congressman Barney Frank, tennis greats Martina Navratilova and Billy Jean King, along with a guy by the name of Barack Obama. This years theme is “We are America,” how the LGBT community and its allies founded a nation. That’s the U.S.A. we’re talking about. And can bet Rick Perry a three-dollar bill that, after reading this series, you’ll never allow a conservative to say “Our Founding Fathers did not have gay people in mind when they formed this country.” The Founding Fathers very much knew of — even recruited — those who

pushed the boundaries of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. Here are some humorous examples from the series — all true. You’ll discover, starting next week, Benjamin Franklin was the first U.S. military recruiter who enlisted a gay man into the Revolutionary Army. George Washington in all probability was the first American to offer domesticpartner rights. He gave housing to a known homosexual couple when housing was a premium at Valley Forge. And when faced with a homosexual scandal at Valley Forge, he took the least harmful course of action and embarrassed the officer accused of sodomy rather than giving him the death sentence as Thomas Jefferson demanded. How about the African-American gay man who lead a troop of black men in the Revolution? Or the women who dressed as men to enlist in the Colonial Army? After the war, when they could have taken off the drag, some chose to live out their lives as men. Do you know the lesbian who wrote one of the country’s most patriotic songs, “America the Beautiful”? You’ll also read about the ongoing debate of whether President Lincoln preferred men over women. Many historians have clearly held a biased view of Lincoln, dismissing

ustin Lance Black is a screenwriter, director and producer. In 2009, he received an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for “Milk,” about openly gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk. Black grew up in a devout Mormon household in San Antonio, Texas. After his mother remarried, he moved to Salinas, California. As a young boy, Black knew he was gay. He believed he would be “hurt and brought down” because of it and that he was going to hell. He says his “acute awareness” of his sexual orientation made him gloomy and sometimes suicidal. In high school he fostered a love of the dramatic arts and began working on theatrical productions. He enrolled at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television and graduated with honors. In 2000, he wrote and directed two gaythemed films, “The Journey of Jared Price” and “Something Close to Heaven.” Black was the only Mormon writer for the HBO series about polygamy, “Big Love,” for which he received two Writers Guild of America Awards. Captivated by the story of Harvey Milk, Black researched Milk’s life for three years, culminating in a screenplay. Academy Award-nominated director Gus Van Sant signed on with the project. In 2009, “Milk” received eight Academy Award nominations and won two. Black received an Oscar for his screenplay and Sean Penn won for best actor. Black’s recent works include the screenplay for “Pedro,” profiling AIDS activist and MTV personality Pedro Zamora. He is the screenwriter for “J. Edgar,” a film about FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. In 2009, Black topped The Advocate’s list of the “Forty under 40” most influential openly gay people. He is an outspoken LGBT activist, serving on the boards of The Trevor Project and the American Foundation for Equal Rights. Black frequently speaks about gay rights to college students across the country. He resides in Los Angeles.

lison Bechdel is a celebrated cartoonist and author of the long-running comic strip, “Dykes To Watch Out For.” Her groundbreaking graphic memoir, “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic,” was awarded the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book. A native of central Pennsylvania, Bechdel and her siblings grew up in a small town. Her parents both taught at the local high school and her father, the subject of her first memoir, was the town’s mortician. Bechdel attended Oberlin College, where she graduated with a B.A. in 1981. “Dykes to Watch Out For” was published in 1983 and became a syndicated comic strip in 1985. With her signature subtle wit, Bechdel took on the complex and often stereotyped world of lesbian relationships through her comic alter ego, Mo. The strip has become a cult classic. In the late 1990’s, Bechdel began work on her first graphic memoir about her family, “Fun Home.” The memoir focuses on her relationship with her father and his death. Time Magazine honored “Fun Home” as No. 1 of the 10 Best Books of 2006, calling it “a masterpiece about two people who live in the same house but different worlds, and their mysterious debts to each other.” The book won a Lambda Book Award, an Eisner Award and the 2006 Publishing Triangle’s Judy Grahn Nonfiction Award. It was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award. “Dykes to Watch Out For” continued production for 25 years. In 2008, Bechdel suspended work on the award-winning comic strip to create a graphic memoir about relationships. The same year, Houghton Mifflin published a complete collection of her work, “The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For.” Bechdel resides outside of Burlington,Vermont.

ohn Ashbery is one of the most successful 20th century poets. He has won almost every major American literary award, including the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Ashbery graduated from Harvard University, where he studied English and served on the editorial board of the Harvard Advocate. He received his master’s degree from Columbia University. After graduating, Ashbery spent three years in publishing before moving to Paris on a Fulbright scholarship. Returning to the U.S. in 1957, Ashbery attended graduate classes at New York University. Thereafter, he returned to Paris, where he supported himself as an editor. He eventually moved back to the U.S. to become the executive editor of ARTNews magazine. Ashbery’s success began with frequent publication of his poems in magazines such as Furioso and Poetry New York. While in France, his book “Some Trees” won the Yale Younger Poet’s Prize. He has won many awards, including the Bollingen Prize and the McArthur Foundation’s “Genius Award.” His Pulitzer Prize-winning poem “Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror,” which also won the National Book Award and the National Critics Circle Award, is unique for its triple prize status. The poem pulls together his favored themes: creating poetry and the influence of visual arts on his work. Ashbery’s career has been marked by controversy. Response to his poetry ranges from praise for his brilliant expressionism and use of language to condemnation for his work’s nonsensical and elusive nature. A prolific writer, he has published over 20 books of poetry, beginning with “Tourandot and Other Poems.” His work has been compared to modernist painters such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Critics assert that he is trying to translate visual modern art into written language. Since 1974, he has supported himself through teaching positions, the last of which was as the Charles P. Stevens, Jr. Professor of Language and Literature at Bard College. He lives in upstate New York, where he continues to write poetry.

illiam Rufus DeVane King, the 13th United States vice president, has the distinction of having served in that office for less time than any other vice president. He died of tuberculosis on April 18, 1853, just 25 days after being sworn into office on March 24, 1853, according an official biography of King prepared by the Office of the Historian of the U.S. Senate. Other historians have speculated that King holds yet another distinction — the likely status of being the first gay U.S. vice president and possibly one of the first gay members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. King (1786-1853) served in the House of Representatives from North Carolina for six years beginning in 1811 and later served in the Senate from the newly created state of Alabama from 1819-44, when he became U.S. minister to France. He returned to the Senate four years later, in 1848, where he served until December 1852, when he resigned after winning election in November 1852 as vice president on the ticket of Franklin Pierce. A lifelong bachelor, King lived for 15 years in the home of future U.S. president James Buchanan while the two served in the Senate. Buchanan, also a lifelong bachelor, is believed by some historians to be the nation’s first gay president. “They certainly didn’t have the word gay back then,” said Paul F. Boller Jr., professor emeritus of history at Texas Christian University and author of several books on presidential politics, including the book “Presidential Campaigns: From George Washington to George W. Bush.” In a telephone interview, Boller said Washington insiders at the time speculated over whether King and Buchanan’s wellknown close friendship had evolved into a romantic relationship. “I don’t think the word homosexual was used either,” Boller said. “So they’d sort of use the term ‘a little feminine’ and all of that.” Boller and historian Jean H. Baker, professor of history at Maryland’s Goucher Col-

lege and author of a biography of Buchanan, each cite reports that President Andrew Jackson referred to King as “Miss Nancy” and “Aunt Fancy.” Aaron V. Brown, who became U.S. postmaster general while Buchanan was president, reportedly referred to King as Buchanan’s “wife.” Baker reports in her Buchanan biography that King’s and Buchanan’s nieces reportedly destroyed their uncles’ correspondence with each other, fueling speculation that the two men were in a gay relationship that their families wanted to conceal. In one letter that survived, Buchanan expressed sadness over King’s departure from his house in 1844 to become the U.S. envoy to France. “I am now solitary and alone, having no companion in the house with me,” Buchanan wrote. “I have gone a wooing to several gentlemen, but have not succeeded with any one of them.” King’s relationship with Buchanan, who was from Pennsylvania, could have been a factor in Buchanan’s sympathy for the South during Buchanan’s tenure as a senator and later as president from 1857-61. Most accounts by historians of King’s political career portray him as a moderate southerner who supported slavery while emerging as a strong unionist. King voiced opposition in the Senate to calls by some of his fellow southerners for the South to secede from the United States during the tense decade prior to the Civil War. “From such a calamity may God in His mercy deliver us,” King wrote in expressing opposition to the growing calls for secession. King was born in 1786 in Sampson County, N.C., to a family of wealthy planters. His father owned more than two-dozen slaves, the Office of the Senate Historian reports in its biography of King. It says King attended an elite preparatory school before attending the University of North Carolina, where he studied law. Following a legal apprenticeship, he was admitted to the state bar in 1805 and began a legal practice. He served in the North Carolina Legislature from 1808-09 and won election in 1810 to the U.S. House and began serving as a congressman in 1811 at age 25. He resigned from the House in 1816 to enter the world of diplomacy by taking

a job as legation secretary for William Pinkney, who was appointed by President James Monroe as U.S. minister to Russia in St. Petersburg. King returned to the U.S. in 1818, when he moved from North Carolina to the territory of Alabama, becoming one of the leaders of the Alabama statehood movement. The Senate historian’s biography says King purchased 750 acres of land in Alabama and established a plantation. He later joined others to form a land company that founded the town of Selma, which King reportedly named. In December 1819, he became one of Alabama’s first two U.S. senators. As a moderate Democrat, King became an early supporter of Andrew Jackson’s quest to become president, the Senate biography says. It quotes an unnamed critic of King as describing him as a “tall, prim, wig-topped mediocrity,” noting that King wore a wig “long after such coverings had gone out of fashion.” The biography quotes a fellow senator as having this to say about King: “He was distinguished by the scrupulous correctness of his conduct. He was remarkable for his quiet and unobtrusive, but active practical usefulness as a legislator … To his honor be it spoken, he never vexed the ear of the Senate with ill-timed, tedious or unnecessary debate.” The Encyclopedia of Alabama reports in

a 2003 article that rumors circulating in Washington about King’s sexual orientation increased as his close friendship with Buchanan became widely known. “Neither man ever married, and by 1836 they were sharing a residence in Washington,” the encyclopedia article says. “Any negative reactions to their relationship appear to have had little effect, and the men continued with their living arrangement and their work as legislators.” By 1840, newspapers in Alabama supportive of the Democratic Party, of which King was a prominent member, promoted King as a vice-presidential running mate for incumbent President Martin Van Buren. Although King received little support outside Alabama for the vice-presidential nomination, he continued to position himself behind the scenes as a possible vice-presidential candidate for the next two decades, the Alabama Encyclopedia reports. The Senate biography of King says President John Tyler interrupted King’s vice-presidential ambitions in 1844 when he nominated him to become U.S. minister to France and the Senate quickly confirmed the nomination by a lopsided margin. The bio says King succeeded in his main mission to persuade France not to oppose U.S. plans to annex Texas, which the U.S. acquired following the MexicanAmerican War. King returned to the Senate in 1848, two years after completing his service in France. In July 1850, King became the defacto U.S. vice president when President Zachary Taylor died in office and then Vice President Millard Filmore became president, leaving the office of vice president vacant. King’s Senate colleagues responded by unanimously selecting him as president pro tempore of the Senate, which normally would have placed him third in line to become president. With the vice president’s post vacant, King emerged as first in line to become president if Filmore were to die in office. In 1852, after years of vying for the vice-presidential nomination, the constellations appeared to be in perfect alignment with Democratic Party politics for King’s longtime dream. After nominating Franklin continued on page 32

James Buchanan: America’s First Gay President? By Timothy Cwiek

M

ore than 150 years before America elected its first black president, Barack Obama, it most likely had its first gay president, James Buchanan (1791-1868). Buchanan, a Democrat from Lancaster County, Pa., was the 15th president of the United States, and a lifelong bachelor. He served as president from 1857-61, tumultuous years leading up to the Civil War. Historian James W. Loewen has done extensive research into Buchanan’s personal life, and he’s convinced Buchanan was gay. Loewen is the author of the acclaimed book “Lies Across America,” which examines how historical sites inaccurately portray figures and events in America’s past. “I’m sure that Buchanan was gay,” Loewen said. “There is clear evidence that he was gay. And since I haven’t seen any evidence that he was heterosexual, I don’t believe he was bisexual.” According to Loewen, Buchanan shared a residence with William Rufus King, a Democratic senator from Alabama, for several

14

years in Washington, D.C. Loewen said contemporary records indicate the two men were inseparable, and wags would refer to them as “the Siamese twins.” Loewen also said Buchanan was “fairly open” about his relationship with King, causing some colleagues to view the men as a couple. For example, Aaron Brown, a prominent Democrat, writing to Mrs. James K. Polk, referred to King as Buchanan’s “better half,” “his wife” and “Aunt Fancy … rigged out in her best clothes.” In 1844, when King was appointed minister to France, he wrote Buchanan, “I am selfish enough to hope you will not be able to procure an associate who will cause you to feel no regret at our separation.” Loewen also said a letter Buchanan wrote to a friend after King went to France shows the depth of his feeling for King. “I am now solitary and alone, having no companion in the house with me,” Buchanan wrote. “I have gone a wooing to several gentlemen, but have not succeeded with any one of them. I feel that it is not good for man to be alone; and should not be astonished to find myself married to

some old maid who can nurse me when I am sick provide good dinners for me when I am well, and not expect from me any very ardent or romantic affection.” Loewen said their relationship — though interrupted due to foreign-service obligations — ended only with King’s death in 1853. In the late 1990s, Loewen visited Wheatland, the mansion in Lancaster, Pa., where Buchanan spent his later years. Loewen said he asked a staffer at Wheatland if Buchanan was gay, and the reply was: “He most definitely was not.” Loewen said the staffer pointed to a portrait of Ann Coleman, the daughter of a wealthy iron maker, whom Buchanan was engaged to briefly 1819 — shortly before she committed suicide. However, Loewen scoffed at the staffer’s suggestion that the brief engagement to Coleman proved Buchanan was heterosexual. Loewen said Buchanan showed little interest in Coleman, appeared more interested in her fortune, and possibly contributed to her suicide due to his emotional detachment. Patrick Clarke, the director of Wheatland, said the staff now takes a neutral stance on Buchanan’s sexual or affectional preference. “There’s no solid proof that Buchanan was heterosexual, nor is there solid proof that he was homosexual,” Clarke said. “If we ever come up with a smoking gun that proves it one way or the other, I would definitely encourage our staff to share it with the public.” But, he said Ann Coleman’s portrait no

longer is displayed at Wheatland. The tours focus mainly on the mansion’s décor and activities that took place there during the later years of Buchanan’s life, he added. Wheatland also has about 45 volunteer tour guides, and to Clarke’s knowledge, none of the guides is openly gay. “The volunteer guides who we train to share the history of James Buchanan’s life and times are directed to take a neutral stance regarding [his] sexual preference,” Clarke said. But Clarke said he wouldn’t object if a volunteer offered a personal opinion that Buchanan was gay, if asked by a visitor. “When you have 50 minutes to take people through a nine-room house, there’s only so much you can discuss,” Clarke said. “But if the question is raised, the guide may express a personal opinion.” Loewen said many historians rate Buchanan as one of the worst U.S. presidents. Buchanan was part of the pro-slavery wing of the Democratic Party, and corruption plagued his administration. But Loewen said those flaws shouldn’t discourage members of the LGBT community from acknowledging Buchanan’s status as a gay man. “Lots of gay people have been exemplary,” he said. “Let’s look at Walt Whitman. For my money, he’s the best poet in the history of the country. But we also have to acknowledge the failures. If we only admit that really great people are gay, what kind of history is that? And how is that believable? It’s ridiculous. We have to tell it like it was.” As a heterosexual male, Loewen added, he has no hidden agenda in outing Buchanan. “I’m not gay,” Loewen said. “I don’t run around trying to find gay folks or black folks underneath every rock. But I’m not going to ignore clear evidence.” Timothy Cwiek holds a bachelor of art degree in U.S. history from West Chester University. He has written for Philadelphia Gay News since the late 1970s and written freelance articles for numerous publications on topics such as the Lincoln assassination, the Kennedy family, the shootings at Kent State University, first ladies and the macrobiotic movement in America.

positions. He won’t enforce DOMA, but he won’t go beyond civil unions for now. That is too bad, because with the bully pulpit on his side, the president can speed the change, which will surely come anyway tomorrow. America sides with those who endorse amplifying liberties for all. Public sentiment is moving in the direction of supporting gay marriage, with most polls showing people are now about evenly split or narrowly in favor. Gay marriage is on the right side of history, a slowly evolving process that will be law in America one day down the road. Even without Obama’s backing, a few states have passed legislation legalizing gay marriage; New York was the most recent. Politicians leap on trends and statesman help create them. We call on President Obama to be the statesman for gay marriage that he was for gay soldiers. You have done too much for us for you to lose our support. resident Obama’s appearance before the Human Rights Campaign last Saturday night in Washington, D.C., came less than two weeks after the military ended its ban on openly gay service members. Obama championed that change, and celebrated his victory before 3,0000 enthusiastic supporters, which included Lady Gaga, at the dinner. Having now won the right for gay soldiers to serve and die for their country, many gay leaders were quietly hoping that the President would take the next step and support same-sex marriage. Many were thinking the HRC dinner would become the platform in which he would do it. They were disappointed. It was not to be. The president circumvented the issue. In politics, perfect is the enemy of good. You sometimes have to accept incremental steps. So it is with gay rights in the Obama Administration; so it has been with civil rights in America. Letter to the Editor To the Editor: It is time for our Community to look forward to the elections in 2012. Our apathy has resulted in us being represented in Congress and the Governor’s office by the anti-gay Tea Party. Is this what we want? I hear, “Oh, politics don’t interest me.” Well, guess what, you had better get interested or we will never achieve the goals so important to our survival as citizens with equal rights afforded to every other group. I would suggest that businesses in our area supported by the Community such as bars, restaurants and stores hold political rallies and voter registration drives like they sponsor fundraisers. They could invite various candidates to speak and tell us exactly what they will do for us. We can become a powerful voting force with just a little effort. ow, I don’t want to give a long speech. Cyndi Lauper is in the house. I can’t compete with that. But I wanted to come here tonight, first of all, to personally thank Joe for his outstanding years of leadership at HRC. What he has accomplished at the helm of this organization has been remarkable, and I want to thank all of you for the support that you’ve shown this organization and for your commitment to a simple idea: Every single American – gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, transgender – every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of our society. It’s a pretty simple proposition. Now, I don’t have to tell you that we have a ways to go in that struggle. I don’t have to tell you how many are still denied their basic rights – Americans who are still made to feel like second-class citizens, who have to live a lie to keep their jobs, or who are afraid to walk the street, or down the hall at school. Many of you have devoted your lives to the cause of equality. So you know what we have to do; we’ve got more work ahead of us. But we can also be proud of the progress we’ve made these past two and a half years. Think about it. Two years ago, I stood at this podium, in this room, before many of you, and I made a pledge. I said I would never counsel patience; that it wasn’t right to tell you to be patient any more than it was right for others to tell African Americans to be patient in the fight for equal rights a half century ago. But what I also said, that while it might take time – more time than anyone would like – we are going to make progress; we are going to succeed; we are going to build a more perfect union. And so, let’s see what happened. I met with Judy Shepard. I promised her we would pass a hate crimes bill named for her son, Matthew. And with the help of my dear friend Ted Kennedy we got it done. Because it should never be dangerous – you should never have to look over your shoulder – to be gay in the United States of America. That’s why we got it done. I met with Janice Langbehn, who was barred from the bedside of the woman she loved as she lay dying. And I told her that we were going to put a stop to this discrimination. And you know what? We got it done. I issued an order so that any hospital in America that accepts Medicare or Medicaid – and that means just about every hospital – has to treat gay partners just as they do straight

Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

Lights! Cameras! Action!

Gay Film Festival Returns to Fort Lauderdale By J.W. Arnold

T

he Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival returns to Wilton Manors next weekend and organizers are promising the best ever. According to Executive Director Franc Castro, the festival, which runs Oct. 13-16 at The Manor, will feature 17 films, additional award-winning shorts and special appearances by filmmakers and actors. The festival got its start as an adjunct to the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, but in recent years, the organization has worked to grow the Fort Lauderdale festival as its own full-fledged event. “We were showing 40 films in Miami and only five in Fort Lauderdale,” explains Castro. “We listened to the feedback we got from Fort Lauderdale audiences who were looking for more.” Organizers moved the Fort Lauderdale

festival to the fall three years ago and this is the second year the films have been screened at the Wilton Manors nightclub, The Manor. Castro cites the support of The Manor as key to the success of the festival: “Ticket sales only cover 20 percent of our costs when you factor in venue rental, film rental, technicians, marketing, ticketing costs….” Castro explains. “The Manor, which is donating the space, and corporate sponsors such as the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau are crucial to growing the festival. It’s definitely scaled down (compared to Miami), but the potential is there.” He also encourages film fans to consider purchasing a $50 festival membership, which not only supports the non-profit organization, but also comes with perks such as discounted tickets and special events throughout the year. The festival opens Thursday, Oct. 13 with the South Florida premiere of “Dirty Girl,”

which was screened at the Toronto gay film festival and was immediately picked up for distribution by The Weinstein Company, the company that released the Oscar nominated, “The Kids Are Alright.” Castro is particularly excited because the movie will be shown on 35mm film, an increasing rarity as many independent filmmakers move to video. Other highlights include “Kink Crusaders,” a documentary about the leather community and the International Mr. Leather competition in Chicago. The film, which will be shown on Saturday night, Oct. 14, will be of particular interest to local audiences because of a cameo appearance by the 2007 Mr. Ramrod, Scott Melton, who finished third. One of Castro’s favorites is a double feature on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m. of “The Grove” and “Life at the End,” two thoughtful films that look at the AIDS National Memorial in San Francisco and end of life issues. The

movies will be followed by a panel discussion with attorneys and caregivers to explore the issues raised in the documentaries. The festival is offering a special $5 ticket price for the film: “We wanted to make sure these films are sold out, as we’re coming up on the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the AIDS virus and it’s just hard to fill seats on anything about AIDS anymore,” Castro says. A number of filmmakers will also be appearing, including J.C. Calciano (“eCupid”), whose family resides in Coral Springs. “A film festival isn’t a film festival unless you have the filmmakers there,” notes Castro. Fans can learn more about the festival at the gala pre-party tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the Atlantic Hotel, 601 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Visit FLGLFF.com for more information and a full schedule of films.

female-to-male transgender winners. The contest also attracts straight fans, mostly women, and heterosexual competitors, too. There are still plenty of “Tom of Finland” types, but Skiff devotes most of the film to the diversity the contest welcomes and the personal journey participants undergo through the competition. Kink Crusaders offers up plenty of titillation, but it is also an educational film for anyone whose only exposure to the leather community is the spectacle that seems to attract the news cameras at your local Pride parade.

s a gay man in his early 40s, I have only hazy memories of the AIDS epidemic that rocked the gay community during the 1980s. As a teen in the Midwest, barely in touch with my own sexuality, I remember the news reports of a gay “cancer” that was killing thousands of people far away in gay meccas like San Francisco. With the advent of anti-retroviral therapies and the tireless efforts of activist and philanthropists alike, HIV and AIDS are, 30 years later, seemingly manageable chronic conditions like diabetes or asthma. For those people who buried their friends and lovers, the darkest days are still fresh memories and in San Francisco, many find solace in the AIDS Memorial National Grove, a serene — if little known -- corner in Golden Gate Park dedicated to the memory of their loved ones and all who fell to the disease. The Grove, a beautifully crafted documentary by Andy Abrahams Wilson, reminds us of the fear and loss experienced by the gay community in San Francisco with jarring archival footage and sentimental interviews, but then explores the politics of remembrance. Few know of the existence of the memorial grove, visitors often stumble upon it while seeking the Japanese tea garden and other areas of the park. Members of the memorial’s board of directors sought to raise the profile of the site with a worldwide design competition that would transform the quiet grove into an international monument to the victims of the epidemic. Wilson effectively explores these aspirations of a truly national landmark while contrasting the heartfelt, personal objections of those survivors who successfully fought change in the effort to hold on to the reverent memories of their loved ones.

ampires are cool and they always have been — from the campy early films with Bela Lugosi to Anne Rice’s romantic novels, the Twilight series, The Vampire Diaries and True Blood. We Are the Night, director Dennis Gansel’s contribution to the genre, takes audiences to the gritty underground world of Berlin where a pack of glam lesbian vampires terrorize the back alley nightclubs. Louise, the leader, has been looking for love for centuries and finds it in Lena, a street-smart pickpocket. Police detective Tom is searching for Lena, perhaps offering salvation to the newly lost soul. The problem with We Are the Night is we’ve seen this movie before — many times. There are few fresh ideas or plot twists in this boringly predictable story. From the first scenes, it’s obvious that Lena will struggle to hold on to her humanity and Louise will jealously target Tom, her rival for Lena’s affections.

What Gansel does offer is a fast-paced trip through the darkest corners of

Berlin with well shot street chases and excellent special effects, including a final fight scene worthy of Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible franchise. Kink Crusaders Saturday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m. The Manor – Ivy Cinema

ome snarky queens will insist, “Leather or feathers, it’s all drag,” but Michael Skiff’s documentary aims to dispel the stereotypes of the LGBT leather community with this behind-the-scenes look at the 2008 International Mister Leather competition in Chicago.

Through a series of interviews with past winners and contestants, he explores fetishes ranging from leather and BDSM (that’s bondage and discipline and sadomasochism) to puppy and pig roleplaying. To many, these lifestyles are mystifying and outrageous, but Skiff reveals a lot of heart in the individual members of the community and from unusual sources. riter/director J.C. Calciano follows up last year’s festival circuit favorite, Is it Just Me, with another romantic comedy, “eCupid.” Marshall is a cocky ad agency executive whose relationship is in a rut and his 30th birthday is rapidly approaching. When he downloads a mysterious app, eCupid, that guarantees true love, his life takes series of unexpected turns as the program goes haywire and sabotages his career and his seven-year relationship with Gabriel.

Unlike many of the more serious selections at the festival, eCupid offers a lighthearted story that South Florida audiences will be able to relate to—especially the seven-year itch part and the fear of complacency. It’s not thoughtprovoking and not especially original, but an entertaining diversion. In the straight cinema, Calciano’s film would be a perfect vehicle for Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd or even Adam Sandler, and Houston Rhines (Marshall) and Noah Schuffman (Gabriel) offer strong performances in the lead roles. Look for a cameo from ‘80s primetime soap siren Morgan Fairchild, who also lends her voice to the eCupid app, which can be downloaded on iTunes.

Film Director Comes Home with New Film W

hen J.C. Calciano comes to Fort Lauderdale for the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival screening of his new film, eCupid, it will be a homecoming of sorts. The 47-year-old, Los Angeles-based writer and director’s parents moved to Coral Springs when he was in his 20s and he’s been bouncing back and forth between South Florida and Southern California ever since. “I have lots of family and friends in Florida, so that’s why I was excited to come down to the festival,” he admits, and he’s looking forward to crashing with his parents. Filmmaking was a natural fit for Calciano, who got his start in Brooklyn with “a little camera my grandfather gave me,” producing Super 8 films and simple animations. “When video cameras became more accessible, my dad bought this giant video camera and that became what I used all the time,” he recalls. The A-List: Dallas Rides Into Town with A Fort Lauderdale Cowboy in the Saddle. By Tony Adams Photo by Tony Adams

t the world premier of Logo TV’s new gay reality series The A-List: Dallas, a Manhattan audience of screaming twinks oohed, aahed and squealed with delight at the size of the McMansions of the cast, the size of the drinks they knock down, the size of their hair or their Stetson and the repeated allusions to the size of their penises—or in the case of the lone female—at the size of her breasts. This is, they say, the essential upper crust of gay Texas, and The A-List franchise, having sought a second home outside New York City, could not have chosen a more pleasing locale for its audience. The Technicolored cast includes Phillip, 23 and a stylist and sharply fanged butterfly, who says he is blessed to be able to touch the designer goods he pushes on his clients; Ashley, 25 and a gorgeous photographer who loves her gays, her husband and her Jesus; James, 25 and a trust fund baby who is looking for love in a double Martini, often for breakfast; Taylor, 27 and an unapologetic Republican/Christian fundraiser who has the bible downloaded on his iPad; Chase, 27 and an investment banker who sounds more like a bank teller trainee and says in the first episode “People really do

A-List Dallas Cast envy my life. It has everything to do with my hair.” Lastly there’s Levi Crocker, a familiar face in Fort Lauderdale where he spends the winter months tending his growing retail business, Inchwear, and mingling with the cowpokes and horsemen at the Bergeron rodeo grounds in Davie. Levi is destined to be the heartbreaker of the show, not just because he is the only real cowboy in the cast, but because speculation and reports about the size of his endowment constitute a good portion of the script. He is also a sly charmer who, in the course of our meeting, told me much about his life while diverting my eyes by stroking his large brass steerhead belt buckle.

Born in Oklahoma 25 years ago, Levi has lived in Dallas for 7 years, moving to South Florida to start and develop Inchwear with two friends. Inchwear is an 18-month-old company that retails gear referencing the measurement of the wearer’s endowment, real or otherwise. How did Levi get tapped to join the cast of The A-List: Dallas? He says, “My name came up at the dinner table apparently. They were looking for a serious cowboy. I grew up on a horse ranch in Oklahoma. For years, I was the director of operations for a huge rodeo. Rodeo is in my blood. I broke my back about 7 years ago. My orthopedist said to quit jumping off horses,

and to keep my boots on the ground. That’s when I got into rodeo management. Now, I’m getting involved with the IGRA [International Gay Rodeo Association].” I asked him to describe his character on the show and wondered if he could be compared to anyone on The A-List: New York. He said, “You can’t make comparisons to the other cast. I watched the first episode for the first time just a few hours ago. It was stressful going in to finally see it. I was pleased with how I came off. I was flabbergasted. I was definitely worried about it. I’ve been working so hard on this for the past 4 months, and I left with a smile on my face after watching the first episode. After the A-List, Levi intends to remain involved in rodeo and to focus on developing Inchwear. This means he and his endowment will continue to be Fort Lauderdale fixtures. When I asked Levi if he was having romance in his personal life, he said, “You know I keep lookin’, lookin’, lookin’…tastin’, tastin’ tastin.’” It is safe to assume he is single and available. After the world premier screening, during the Q&A with the audience, the cast received a question from a fan who wondered how the Dallas cast would be different from the cast of the New York show. Taylor, the gay Republican/Christian snapped, “We’re younger, hotter and have less wrinkles.” Half of the Manhattan audience responded with an ecstatic scream while the other half hissed. Them’s fightin’ words, cowgirl. The A-List: Dallas airs Mondays at 10 p.m./9c on Logo. The series premiere is at a special time, Monday, Oct. 10 at 11 p.m./10c on Logo.

First-Ever “Celebrate Orgullo” showcased LGBT Hispanic Pride during Hispanic Heritage Month Saturday, October 1, in Lummus Park on Miami Beach. “Orgullo” is Spanish for “Pride.”

The show opened with dancers in traditional, Bolivian costume and dance.

Edward Nunez, Mr. Noche Latina 2011, stood proudly during the event. For this title, he had competed earlier in the year against seven other hunks.

Eddie, 23, and Bryan, 27, with Yo Love Miami, attracted guests to a raffle supporting the “Miami Beach Life Concept.”

TRY THIS EXERCISE: Single Arm Neutral Grip Dumbbell Row Unilateral exercises, like this one, are important because they allow you to work each side of your body separately and correct any muscle imbalances which may exist. This exercise targets the muscles of the upper back.

Big Difference Between Weight Loss and Fat Loss Q: I’m a 45-year-old man and have been trying desperately (and unsuccessfully) to lose 20 or so pounds in excess weight. I have tried every diet known to man and have been doing cardio at the gym two times a week but can’t seem to lose more than a pound or two here and there. Then I turn on the TV and see contestants on “The Biggest Loser” dropping 12 pounds or more in a week! What are they doing that I’m not? A: I appreciate your frustration, but please don’t confuse “Reality TV” with real life! First of all, the dramatic weight loss you see on weekly episodes of “The Biggest Loser” do not take place in a week as episodes are filmed over a longer period. Secondly, I believe the practices used on the show generally amount to dangerous, unhealthy and unsustainable weight loss – and the fact that the contestants invariably regain most or all of their weight after the show ends seems to confirm this. It’s extremely important to understand the difference between weight loss and fat loss. Our weight is basically made up of water (55-78% of the human body) as well as blood, bones, muscle, fat and tissues. A certain amount of fat is necessary for our bodily functions, but excess fat leads to stroke, heart disease, hypertension and a host of other illnesses. Therefore excess body fat – not weight – needs to be our focus. Unfortunately, the focus on “The Biggest Loser” is weight loss rather than fat loss, which is a slower process and less dramatic. Dropping weight so quickly is simply dangerous to your health. It has been well documented that contestants on “The Biggest Loser” are made to do eight hours or more of cardio daily and many literally starve and dehydrate themselves to drop weight rapidly. They end up losing a lot of water weight in the process and also break-down calorie-burning muscle tissue (which slows their metabolism and burns fewer calories and less fat in the long run).

(Photo by Toby’s Photos) A condition called ketosis in which the body breaks down muscle for energy often results. You will notice there is little or no strength training on the show to build muscle; having contestants build muscle, which would be healthy, would not lead to the jaw-dropping weight loss numbers on which the show thrives! When these contestants return to the real world where it’s not practical to do eight hours of cardio a day, eat specially-prepared, low-calorie meals and have their every move monitored by a coach, the weight returns. There is no magic pill or diet to lose body fat. In the end it comes down to learning how to eat the right foods in the correct portions and engaging in regular exercise comprising both cardio and strength training. Start by determining exactly how much fat you need to lose. If you are a male weighing 200 pounds and your body fat measurement is 30 percent, you are carrying around 60 pounds of fat. At aged 45, a body fat measurement of 14-17 percent would be healthier, so this means you would need to lose about 30 pounds of fat. A pound of fat equates to approximately 3500 calories, so burning 500 calories more than you eat each day (500 x 7 days = 3500) will lead to a pound of fat loss in a week. Health professionals advise against losing more than 1.5-2 pounds of fat per week. My advice to you would be to set reasonable goals for yourself, pay attention to what you are eating, how much you are eating and how many times a day you are eating (five to six small meals are recommended), increase your cardio

elbow close to your side. Alternating sides, do three sets of

and strength training routine to jumpstart your metabolism, avoid alcohol, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep. Healthy fat loss is a process that takes time, so be patient with yourself.

TIP OF THE WEEK Sweet Tooth? Try Sugar-Free Jello If you are watching your carbohydrate intake but craving something sweet, try eating sugar-free jello (gelatin) which is fat-free, has no sugars or carbs and only about 10 calories per serving. It’s super easy to make and has health benefits: Gelatin is excellent for your skin, nails, hair and bones because of its high concentration of glycoprotein and proline amino acids. I add chopped fruit to mine during the mixing process (bananas, strawberries, blueberries and pineapple are all nutritious choices), so that the fruit is set in the gelatin during refrigeration. Overall, a healthy dessert you can have daily. Census Flaw continued from page 6

problem with Census Bureau data collection procedures more than seven years ago,” said Gates, “and it is a positive step to see the Bureau release these new estimates.” Of the 646,464 that the Census Bureau counts as same-sex couples, 514,735 (80 percent) were unmarried partners and 131,729 (20 percent) were married spouses. In 2000, the Census Bureau’s “preferred estimate” of same-sex couple households

was 358,390, meaning the number of samesex couple households increased by 80 percent in the past decade. Of the 358,390 same-sex couple households identified in 2000, 88 percent identified as unmarried partners while 12 percent identified as married. Same-sex marriage did not become available anywhere in the world until 2001 (in the Netherlands). It became available in the U.S. (in Massachusetts) in 2004. Using the uncorrected counts, the num-

ber of same-sex couple households increased by almost 52 percent between 2000 and 2010. There were 594,391 same-sex couple households counted in 2000, compared to 901,997 counted in 2010. In the 2010 preferred data, the state with the highest percentage of same-sex couples in relation to the total number of households in the state was Vermont, with 1.091 percent. Massachusetts was second, with 1.023 percent, and California was third with 0.998 percent.

Gates said the 2010 effort, while credible, is only a “temporary solution.” “Ultimately, they have to change the way the questions are asked in order to minimize these types of errors in the data,” said Gates. “Canada and the UK use procedures known to substantially minimize the problems observed in U.S. data. The Census Bureau has tested these possible revisions and should move quickly to change current surveys and collect more accurate data.”

William Rufus King continued from page 13

Pierce for president on the 49th ballot, the Democratic Convention, convening in Baltimore, nominated King as Pierce’s running mate. In the ensuing months, King campaigned aggressively for the Pierce-King ticket, playing some role in Pierce’s victory in November 1852. But biographers report that King’s coughing spells became increasingly frequent and painful, leading to a diagnosis of tuberculosis. By December 1852, King described himself to friends as “looking like a skeleton,” the Senate biography reports. Later that month he resigned from the Senate and made arrangements, at the advice of his doctor, to spend the winter in Cuba, where the warm, tropical climate would hopefully help him regain his health.

In early February 1853, King realized his condition was getting worse and he would not be well enough to travel to Washington in time for the March 4 inauguration ceremony. Upon learning of King’s deteriorating health, Congress took the unusual step of passing a law allowing him to take the oath of office for vice president on foreign soil. “On March 24, 1853, near Matanzas, a seaport town 60 miles from Havana, the gravely ill statesman, too feeble to stand unaided, became the nation’s 13th vice president,” his Senate biography says. King boarded a ship to return to the U.S. in April 1853 and arrived home at his Alabama plantation on April 17. He died one day later at age 67. David Durham, a University of Alabama professor of law and history, said in a Sept. 9

interview that it remains an open question whether King was gay. Durham said it’s also uncertain but a strong possibility that King played a role in shaping Buchanan’s policies and views on the issue of slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War. “I don’t think anybody can prove it one way or the other,” he said in discussing King’s sexual orientation. “A lot of the speculation comes from misinterpreting, I think, 19th Century lifestyles, where men commonly slept in the same bed and thought nothing of it,” Durham said. “And the kind of terms of affection used in letters and correspondence between males — in our society now it’s like, umm, that’s very interesting. But they thought nothing of it and it didn’t mean there was some kind of romantic attach-

ment,” he said. “But that’s not to say that there wasn’t,” Durham added. Lou Chibbaro Jr. has reported on the LGBT civil-rights movement and the LGBT community for more than 30 years, beginning as a freelance writer and later as a staff reporter and currently as senior news reporter for the Washington Blade. In 2011, Chibbaro became the first reporter from the LGBT press to be inducted into the Society of Professional Journalists D.C. Professional Chapter’s Hall of Fame and received the Justice for Victims Crime Award from the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia in 1998. He received a bachelor’s degree with a double major in biology and political science from the State University of New York at Brockport.
