The recent suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer, a 14-year-old who had previously posted an “It Gets Better” video, showed how urgent there is a need to Ben Cohen act on the issues of bullying and discrimination. Without activists and organizations, the LGBT community would be lost in the struggle for equality. On Saturday, October 15, the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force will honor and support these activists and organizations th Georg Ketelhohn with the 15 Annual Miami Recognition Dinner. The Dinner takes place at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, where attendees will gather in the Sparkle Ballroom. Co-chair of the dinner, Tim Nardi, states that “as a celebration of the 15 year anniversary…the theme will be ‘Sparkle’ and the evening is designed to evoke descriptions of ‘fun’ and ‘elegant.’ ” Another sparkle to the evening are the honorees. Ben Cohen, recipient of the 2011 Humanitarian Award, shows how

Ketelhohn now works with the law firm of Siegfried, Rivera, Lerner, De La Torre & Sobel, P.A., contributing to the LGBT community as board treasurer with Florida Together, a coalition of LGBT groups. The sparkle doesn’t end there. Attendees can expect a sumptuous dinner, dancing, and a silent auction that includes items such as spa treatments, gym memberships, original art

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Lesbian Lifestyles Linked to Breast Cancer By Denise Royal

he American Cancer Society estimates that more than 230,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Nearly 40,000 of those women die. Different minority populations, as well as subgroups within those populations, face distinct challenges and risk factors when it comes to breast health. Lesbians and bisexual women make up one such subgroup. Last month, comedienne Wanda Sykes admitted that she’s undergone a double mastectomy after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. Singer Melissa Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and spent a year battling the disease. Research has shown lesbians are less likely than heterosexual women to seek routine health care, perhaps because they lack insurance or feel discomfort discussing their lifestyle with doctors. That’s just the tip of the iceberg according to Liz Margolies, executive director of the National LGBT Cancer Network. “Provider insensitivity and ignorance follows the unwelcome that begins in the waiting room with the magazines and medical forms that do not match our lives. Until health care facilities and providers become knowledgeable, respectful and safe for lesbians, even free screening services will continue to be underutilized. Unfortunately, this can also result in cancers being detected at later stages when the prognosis is worse,” she said. Lesbians do not need to be screened differently than heterosexual women, but Margolies says they need to be welcomed into the healthcare system. “Until LGBT cultural competence training is mandatory for all staff in all facilities, discrimination against LGBT people is outlawed in all 50 states and health insurance becomes a basic human right, our screening rates will remain dangerously low. ‘I treat all people the same’ erases the extra challenges lesbians face in accessing healthcare,” she tells SFGN. Also contributing to the problem is that

none of the large national cancer registries and surveys of cancer incidence collect data about sexual orientation or gender identity. This means LGBT cancer survivors are embedded and invisible among the vast wealth of information these surveys provide to other groups. Other ethnic, geographic, and racial populations are able to use the data gleaned from these statistics to develop prevention and treatment programs dedicated to eroding the health disparities they face. They know precisely how prevalent cancer is in their communities. LGBT people do not. Progress on this issue is underway on Capitol Hill. The Health Equity and Accountability Act was introduced last month in the House of Representatives. It is the most comprehensive legislation ever to recognize that gay and transgender health disparities cannot be addressed in isolation from other health disparities, including disparities affecting people with disabilities, communities of color, women, and people in families with mixed immigration statuses. Help is on the way even closer to home thanks to Area Resource and Referral Organization for Women (ARROW). As of 2011, over 200 health care professionals within the South East Florida region have received cultural competence training through ARROW providing the Removing the Barriers curriculum. While research has been conducted that specifically addresses lesbian cancer risks and experiences, the results have been inconsistent. “In almost every case, the sample sizes have been too small for us to draw reliable conclusions. We need more organizations like the Lesbian Health Research Center at the UC Medical Center in San Francisco and major financial backing to develop solid data about lesbians and cancer,” says Margolies. The center’s goal is to speed up the pace of research for the LBTQ community and to close the gap in LBTQ health disparities. It is

the only lesbian-focused health and research organization housed within one of the world’s premier health science institutions, the University of California, San Francisco. It’s important to remember that being a lesbian does not increase the risk for breast cancer, but having one or more of the risk factors below might. A lesbian or bisexual woman without these risk factors is at no greater risk than a heterosexual woman: Cigarette smoking data suggest that lesbians smoke cigarettes at a substantially higher rate than heterosexual women. Alcohol use someresearchreportshigherratesofheavydrinking among lesbians than heterosexual women Obesity - some studies report that lesbians are morelikelytobeoverweightorhaveaBMIover25. Pregnancy lesbians are less likely to have biological children before age 30, which would offer some protection against cancer. What should women lesbian and otherwise do with this information?

As a general rule, women should get a clinical breast exam every three years starting at age 20 and a mammogram and clinical breast exam every year starting at 40 years old. But populations at higher risk should be more vigilant. A key is breast self-awareness. Women should know their family history, calculate their risk and determine with their doctor a screening schedule. They also should become familiar with their breasts so that they’ll notice an unusual lump, hard knot, swelling or skin change. Healthy lifestyle choices also are crucial. They include exercising, limiting alcohol consumption and hormone use, limiting fatty foods and in general watching what you eat. Compass’ HOPE Youth Mentoring Project Then and Now

t was 1992 and Keith Platt, a young gay man barely out of Florida Atlantic University with a newly minted master’s of social work degree, was asked by a colleague to meet with a gay teen who was in foster care and having a terrible time adjusting. “How can I help you?” Platt asked the teen when they first met. “I just want to know that I’m not the only one,” said the youth. “Do you know any other gay kids?” Platt had to admit that he did not know any gay teens but assured the youth that there were many others and that he, Platt, had been an isolated gay teen himself not that many years before. Not sure how, he agreed to try to help find others. A few days later Platt got a call from Greg Elliott, the then executive director of the Stop AIDS program which was changing its name to Compass and expanding its mission

to “support the healthy development of sexual minorities,” according to an article in the July 16, 1992 Sun-Sentinel. Elliott had also met a gay teen in foster care that needed help and gay kids were definitely part of the new organization’s mission. Could Platt assist? Platt had facilitated a gay group on campus during his undergraduate work at Florida State University so he felt comfortable with that format and he and Elliott agreed they would do something for the gay youth in Palm Beach County. The two youths that met with Platt came to the first gathering and discovered they knew each other peripherally through foster care. Four more youths appeared at the first meeting and a group was formed. “The kids were ingenious about finding more kids,” Platt said. “They remembered going to libraries and searching for information about homosexuality and being gay. So

they hand-printed cards and put the cards into the books they knew other gay kids would seek out.” Soon the group had 25 kids and most of them had never talked to anyone else they knew to be gay. And that’s how Compass’ HOPE Youth Mentoring Project began. It quickly became obvious that there was a need and demand for services from the gay youth in Palm Beach County and it would require financial support to prevent it from collapsing under its own success. Platt and Elliott wrote a grant request for funding from the Palm Beach County Children’s Services Council. “It looked like the perfect opportunity

at the time,” Platt said. “We demonstrated how the program could help preserve families and keep kids in school and do all the important things a CSC would want.” But no one said it would be easy and Platt was shocked by the public outcry. “Religious groups in Miami and Broward hired buses to bring people to protest us getting the money,” he said. “We got death threats and bomb threats and it was unbelievable. People came to the hearings and screamed that we were recruiting and showed pornography. Thankfully wiser heads prevailed and we got the funding but there was still a lot of fear about what these people might do.” Platt’s statistics from the time are impressive. When the group first met, 30 percent indicated they had attempted suicide during the previous year. Only one individual reported this behavior at the end of the first year of meetings. Surveys also showed that the kids’ other risk behaviors dropped significantly including use of drugs and alcohol, unprotected sex and overall sexual activity. “We have come a long way from those early days of discovering how to support gay youth,” Platt said. “It’s hard to believe it has been 20 years and the kids still have the basic need to know they aren’t alone and that they’re ok. I’m really glad Compass has kept up this work.” Platt currently teaches at FAU’s School of Social Work. This is the first part of a two part series on Compass’ youth program. While studying social work at FAU she was an intern at Compass and moved from volunteer to employee when a case management position became available at the end of her internship. “They always told us not to give up,” Beane said. “The coordinators kept reminding us that we’re as good as anyone and we shouldn’t let anything stand in our way. The other big thing was knowing there was a place we could call home where someone would be there to listen and encourage us no matter how tough things got outside.” “The sense of belonging is really important to our success,” McWatters said.“We have 14 matched mentor/mentee pairs that are

took over the HOPE Youth Group in 2002,” said Nicole Leidesdorf, now Chief Operations and Programs Officer of the program. “A lot had changed in ten years but a lot had stayed the same. I guess we could still say that but overall I think we’re making progress.” The biggest issue Leidesdorf saw as she started working with HOPE at the dawn of its second decade was a continued use of a disease model with focus on case management and mental health issues. “The APA [American Psychiatric Association] and others had removed homosexuality from the DSM [Diagnostic and Statistical Manual] in 1973,” she said. “I felt it was important to become less clinical and more support-oriented in our approach to the youth. We needed to work from a wellness perspective and we have been moving in that direction ever since. Today we have even begun working with youth and adults in a one-on-one mentoring program,” she said. The new mentoring program is for youth ages 6 to 17 whose lives have been affected by gender identity/expression or sexual orientation issues; their own or those of family or close friends. “So you don’t have to be gay to apply to have a mentor,” said Matthew McWatters, current coordinator of the group. “We could have a straight child who has a transsexual parent or a lesbian sister.” Similarly, you don’t have to be gay to be a mentor. “We need sensitive, caring adults who want to help kids,” McWatters said. “You don’t have to be gay, but you do have

all for mentors and mentees – Compass HOPE Youth Group has developed a mentoring program for youth whose lives have been affected by gender or sexual orientation issues, their own or those of family or close friends. The program is open to youth ages 6 to 17 and adults age 22 and up (exceptions may be made). There’s a one-year commitment for mentor/mentees to meet twice a month for two hours at a time, a total of 4 hours a month. Mentors and mentees meet at Compass at mutually agreeable times. They are also welcome to attend the bi-weekly youth group sessions as part of their time together. Youth and families go through a thorough assessment to ensure a good match. Adult volunteers are also trained to be effective mentors and go through a comprehensive background check including the nationwide FBI criminal records search. Both mentees and mentors get a lot out of the program and often establish lifetime friendships. ‘Value Voters Summit’ Starts DC Ruckus GOP prez candidates, religious leaders attack each other

ven with a seminar branded “Straight Talk on Gay Marriage,” the average LGBT leader was nowhere to be found at the ‘Values Voter Summit’ in Washington, D.C., at the Omni Shoreham Hotel this past weekend. This Christian-themed event featured thousands of participants, and was hosted by organizations listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as ‘hate groups.’ At the event a litany of Republican presidential candidates vied for a straw poll victory. The winner would eventually be Ron Paul, the libertarian-leaning candidate, who peppered his customary verbal assaults on American fiscal and foreign policy with biblical allusions. Paul garnered 37 percent of the vote to Herman Cain’s 23 percent. Senator Rick Santorum took third place with 16 percent. But Paul was a hero in a forum, which at times seemed like a revival meeting. “We have too long relied upon our king in Washington and we have to change that,” Paul stated, imploring the raucous crowd to help bring an end to wars “that undermines the families of America.” The three day conference featured leaders from the Family Research Council, the Heritage Foundation, the American Family Association, and the National Organization for Marriage. The seminars included forums

on ‘Saving the American Dream,’ ‘Saving America’s Children from Pimps and Perverts,’ and ‘Exposing Planned Parenthood.’ Conservative radio host Bryan Fischer was roundly applauded for stating that “the homosexual agenda is the most immediate threat to every freedom and right that is enshrined in the first amendment.” A spokesman for the American Family Association, he declared “we have to choose between homosexuality and liberty because we cannot have both.” That was after calling for all Muslims to be deported. He was enthusiastically applauded each time. Mitt Romney called Fischer’s dialogue “poisonous…lacking in civility.” He asked the conservative audience to focus on “values that unite us…rather than an agenda which

narrows our vision.” Apparently, the crowd did not agree. Romney would finish last with 4 percent in the straw poll. Even though it was ordered by a state Supreme Court ruling, Fischer had previously blamed Romney for the fact that Massachusetts became the first state to recognize gay marriages, because it happened on Romney’s watch. Trying to focus on the stature of the U.S. in the world, Romney offered up again his trademark line that “I will never, ever, apologize for America,” and that under his watch the U.S. would become again “the strongest nation on Earth.” Another religious leader who took to the podium on Friday was Texas mega-church Pastor Robert Jeffress, who denounced Romney, claiming he wasn’t “a genuine follower of Jesus Christ,” and that “Mormonism was a cult.” Jeffress endorsed Rick Perry, saying that he preferred having a “competent Christian” like Perry over a “competent nonChristian” like Romney. But his remarks did not go unanswered. Former Education Secretary and radio host Bill Bennett called the Jeffress comments out and out “bigotry,” claiming he was doing Rick Perry “no favors” with his endorsement. On Sunday, Perry, an evangelical Christian, rejected the comments by Jeffress and said he did not believe Mormons were a cult. Meanwhile, Jeffress, back in Texas, defended

his remarks at his own church, stating that Mormonism “is a false religion.” Jeffress, who also once remarked that Oprah Winfrey is doing the “work of Satan,” told his congregation that he decided as a private citizen to endorse Perry to “push back against the evil that is engulfing our country.” Rick Perry had addressed the summit on its opening day, Friday, by taking an indirect shot at Romney’s position on abortion. “For some candidates, pro-life is an election year slogan to follow the prevailing political winds. For me, it’s about the absolute principle that every human being is entitled to life.” One of the loudest ovations during Perry’s speech came at the mention of his decision to defund Planned Parenthood in Texas. A Planned Parenthood Action Fund Spokesperson angrily retorted that Perry’s decision “has resulted in 300,000 Texas women losing access to preventive health care such as birth control, cancer screenings and annual exams.” One of the summit organizers, Tony Perkins, of the Family Research Council delivered the summit’s wrap up address on Sunday. Perkins defended Michelle Bachman’s husband, Marcus, who runs a Minnesota clinic which ‘cures people from their homosexuality’ by offering ‘reorientation therapy.’ Constantly on TV himself as a spokesman for the FRC, Perkins has argued that the homosexual agenda is “a devastating strategy “meant to destroy innocence, religious freedom, and ultimately, the family.” Fox News featured him three times in eight days in August alone. The popular gay themed Towleroad website referred to the gathering as the “Nuremberg Rally for the religious right.”

The election is set to be held November 1st and I had the opportunity to meet with her recently for a conversation about her aspirations for Miami. Milo is no stranger to the political scene. She ran as a Transgender Republican for Congress in May 2010 for Florida’s 20th congressional district. Milo came in third with an impressive 22 percent of the vote, which is a high percentage considering that records indicate the third-place candidate

I said I would love to, and she came to my studio with her children and a nanny. Of course when I photographed children, the mother or father was always there; I wouldn’t do it otherwise.” Hester has painted all sizes and shapes of men, women and children, including an obese man who he describes as a “very charming fellow.” Now that he has lost sight in one eye, it is difficult for him to get the dot in his subject’s eyes where he wants it, so he is now switching to a broad technique and painting landscapes. George Hester lives in Wilton Manors with his partner of 38 years, Alfredo.

Friedrich Von Steuben Father of the U.S. military

here are few historians today who would doubt that Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Von Steuben was gay.

To appreciate the contributions von Steuben (1730-94) made to the American Revolution, consider this: Before his arrival in Valley Forge in 1778, the Revolutionary Army had lost several battles to Great Britain and, without him, the United States of America might still be the British colonies. Before Valley Forge, the Revolutionary Army was a loosely organized, rag-tag band of men with little military training. The military fumbled through the beginning of the war for independence lacking training and organization. Gen. George Washington and the Continental Congress knew that without help from additional seasoned military experts, the colonies would clearly lose. Since Washington himself was the best the colonies had, they looked to Europe for someone who could train the troops. To that end, Washington wrote the colonies’ representative in Paris, Benjamin Franklin, to see what he could come up with. Franklin, a renowned inventor, was treated as a celebrity in the French court. This would be pivotal in achieving his two major objectives in France: winning financial support for the revolution and finding military leaders who could bring a semblance of order to the Revolutionary Army. Franklin learned of a “brilliant” Prussian military genius, Lt. Gen. Baron Frederich von Steuben.Von Steuben had a string of successes (some self-embellished) with the Prussian army. There was one problem. He’d been asked to depart because of his “affections for members of his own sex.” This became urgent in 1777 when he literally escaped imprisonment in what is now Germany and traveled to Paris. In Paris, Franklin was interviewing candidates to assist Washington back in the colonies when he discovered von Steuben. During the interview process, Franklin discovered von Steuben’s reputation for

having “affections” with males and the issue became pressing as members of the French clergy demanded the French court, as in other countries, take action against this sodomite. They had decided to make their effort a crusade and run him out of France. Franklin had a choice here, and he decided von Steuben’s expertise was more important to the colonies than his sexuality. At the same time, another colonial representative was in France with the explicit job of recruiting experienced military personnel from Europe to train the Continental Army. He was Silas Deane, a former representative to the first Continental Congress and friend of Franklin. Deane is best known for recruiting the Marquis de Lafayette. He also had a side job as a spy for the colonies. Besides being intelligent themselves, Franklin and Deane knew how to spot intelligence. It would have been impossible for either to not know about the reputation of von Steuben. Franklin, working with Deane, decided von Steuben’s “affections” were less important than what he, Washington and the colonies needed to win the war with England. Deane learned of von Steuben’s indiscretions – and that the French clergy was investigating – from a letter to the Prince of Hechingen, his former employer, which read in part: “It has come to me from different sources that M. de Steuben is accused of having taken familiarities with young boys which the laws forbid and punish severely. I have even been informed that that is the reason why M. de Steuben was obliged to leave Hechingen and that the clergy of your country intend to prosecute him by law as soon as he may establish himself anywhere.” Deane, along with Franklin, acted quickly before the clergy could deport or imprison von Steuben and plotted to send him to the colonies to serve with Washington.Von Steuben was given an advance for passage to America and began as a volunteer, without pay. Once he’d arrived in Valley Forge, Washington was concerned about von

eil Patrick Harris is an award-winning television, film and stage actor. Starting at age 16, he has forged an enduring career as a performer in Hollywood and on Broadway. Harris grew up in Ruidoso, New Mexico, the son of two lawyers who ran a restaurant. He took up acting in the fourth grade, playing the role of Toto in “The Wizard of Oz.” When Harris was 15, the family moved to Albuquerque. That same year, he made his feature film debut in “Clara’s Heart,” for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. When he was 16, Harris landed the leading role in the television series “Doogie Howser, M.D.” The series ran for four years and earned him a second Golden Globe nomination as well as a People’s Choice Award. In 1997, Harris accepted the role of Mark in the Los Angeles production of “Rent” and received a Drama League Award for his performance. He made his Broadway debut in 2002 opposite Anne Heche in “Proof.” Thereafter, he appeared as the Emcee in “Cabaret” and as Lee Harvey Oswald in Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Assassins.” Harris’s films include “Undercover Brother,” “The Next Best Thing,” “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” and “Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.” In 2005, Harris joined the television series “How I Met Your Mother” as womanizer Barney Stinson. ne of the first openly gay rabbis, Denise Eger served as rabbi for the world’s first gay and lesbian synagogue. She is the first female and the first openly gay president of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California. Eger was raised in Memphis, Tennessee. Active in her synagogue, she taught religious school from the time she was 12. She studied opera as a teen, intending to be a voice major in college. Eger received a bachelor’s degree in religion from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree from Hebrew Union College (HUC) - Jewish Institute of Religion. In 1988, she was ordained a Reform rabbi. Following ordination, she served as the first full-time rabbi at Congregation Beth Chayim Chadashim, the first gay and lesbian synagogue. In 1991, Rabbi Eger cofounded West Hollywood’s LGBT-welcoming Congregation Kol Ami, which means “all my people.” Rabbi Eger was the founding president of the Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual Interfaith Clergy Association. She worked with the Central Conference of American Rabbis to pass the resolution that allowed Reform rabbis to officiate at same-sex commitment ceremonies. A noted speaker on Judaism, spirituality and LGBT and family issues, Rabbi Eger is a frequent commentator on radio and television. She has written extensively for periodicals, including the Los Angeles Times, The Advocate, the Huffington Post and The Jewish Journal. She has also contributed to a number of books, among them “Twice Blessed: On Being Lesbian, Gay and Jewish,” “Positively Gay,” and “Lesbian Rabbis: THE FIRST GENERATION.” In 2008, Rabbi Eger officiated at the first legal wedding of a lesbian couple in California. The National Women’s Political Caucus named her one of its 12 Remarkable Women in 2010. The Human Rights Campaign presented her with the Community Equality Award in 2011. Rabbi Eger lives with her son in Los Angeles.

In London, Cumming performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre. He received two Olivier Awards, including Best Actor in a Musical for playing the Emcee in “Cabaret.” In 1998, he reprised this role on Broadway, receiving a Tony Award for his performance. Cumming’s many film credits include “Golden Eye,” “Emma,” “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Nicholas Nickleby,” “X2,” and “Burlesque.” On television, he has appeared on “Frasier,” “The L Word,” “Sex and the City,” Logo’s “Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World,” and on the hit series “The Good Wife” as conniving campaign manager Eli Gold. ‘B’ is for Bisexual, but What and Who Are They? By Brian McNaught

f someone asks you to explain bisexuality, simply say, “Bisexuals are people who have the potential to be physically intimate with both sexes.” This probably takes in the majority of the population, but bisexuals aren’t doing a very good job of putting a face on the issue, and telling us how their issues are different from those of gay men and lesbians. We need a Bisexual Liberation Movement, or at least an educational DVD. I would assume that among the challenges faced by bisexuals are the refusal of many people to believe the orientation exists, the pressure bisexual people feel to choose a gay or straight identity, the lack of strong, public role models of bisexuality, the fear many people have of the undependability of a bisexual’s commitment, and the feeling that bisexuality is a behavior rather than an orientation and identity. Bisexuality was added to LGBT for political reasons and not because there was, or is, understanding on anyone’s part of what the political and workplace issues of bisexuals are. Gay people’s advocacy for bisexuals is probably generated by their desire to protect the homosexual attractions of the person from discrimination. Anecdotes, data, and the business case are what I need most help in. My personal belief as a sexual person, and as a sexuality educator, is that most people would identify as bisexual if they saw it as meaning that there is the potential to be attracted to both sexes to varying degrees. If you go to Wikipedia and ask for a list of famous bisexuals, you’ll see hundreds of names, including Katharine Hepburn, Herman Melville, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Anne Frank. Some of the people listed as bisexual are probably gay or lesbian, but afraid to say so. There are far more bisexuals in the world who label themselves gay or lesbian, but who really aren’t. Who doesn’t have the potential to be physically intimate with both sexes under the right circumstances? Women are more honest about it than men. We men gravitate to one or the other end of the identity scale, finding community by saying “yuck” to the thought of being sexual with a woman or with another male. Gay guys and straight guys create their identity by saying what

they’re not. But women are more courageous and honest, except for those women who were once married and now identify as lesbian. That may be their label, but there had to have been some potential for experiencing physical intimacy with a man or they never could have shared a marriage bed with their husbands. I’m not saying the sex was great, but the cuddling must have been, and cuddling is intimacy. The same is true of gay men who were once married. They may insist today that they are gay, but that’s not an accurate description of their sexual potential. They spent time being intimate with at least one woman they chose to marry. One day, such men won’t find it necessary to be so gay. Today, they can be like converts to Catholicism.You’ve never seen people who are so orthodox. The term “bisexual” was coined in the 19th century, as were the terms “homosexual” and “heterosexual.” Some people today prefer the term “pansexual,” which doesn’t mean they find intimacy in the kitchen. It means they see themselves on the continuum between exclusive attraction to men or to women. As an advocate for bisexual people, I need her help, and that of others, in understanding how the workplace can be made to feel more welcoming to bisexual employees. What are their unique, everyday concerns? It’s clearly not about which bathroom to use, nor, if they are married to a person of the other sex, is it about having no heterosexual privilege. We need bisexual people to come out of their gay and straight closets to help us all understand the challenges faced by bisexual people, and perhaps in the process, enable us to claim our own pansexual capacity. Extremists of Many Stripes Parade Their Hate

Okay, I am violating a few editorial rules here by speaking in the first person, but I am just thinking how one of my mentors, Hunter S. Thompson, would have handled this Christian themed event I attended Friday and Saturday in Washington, D.C.

ive hours after spending the night whoring around the dens of homosexual promiscuity in the all too gay Du Pont Circle, I surrendered my soul to the gathering of shirts and ties formulating a new, more religious America at the Omni Shoreham Hotel. If only the conference had been postponed until Tuesday, National Coming Out Day, we could have merged Christian Reckoning with a homosexual awakening. Afraid to tell them an open homosexual was sharing the public toilets with them, I surreptitiously mingled with the crowd of god-fearing wifebeaters, trying to find out whether members of the American Family Association actually also put milk in their cheerios. I then sat with them calmly, a sodomite amongst Christians. Bigotry, I learned, is apparently a new value of Christ, and if there is anything these people hate more than queers and faggots, it’s Muslims and Barack ‘Hussein’ Obama, who, according to most of the speakers, has apparently seized the White House from God. Even better than the speakers who seemed to have slipped off the top of the Grand Canyon, and woke up in a crazed mind-crushing daze, were the exhibit halls that featured such remarkable groups as the American Society for Tradition, Family and

Property, a self-described Catholic organization whose representatives seemed to be wearing red cloaks, preparing early for gay lynchings or Halloween, not sure which. At their booths, I learned that gay marriage will turn a moral wrong into a civil right, because let’s face it, Bill and Bob living together in one house in Missouri is sure going to stop Ron and Sue from raising their kids successfully in Mississippi. Basically, the exhibit hall was a collection of paranoid schizophrenics with mental fungus who need to be rounded up inside a large barbed wire fence and shipped off to the Phantom Zone. Instead, they sat com-

fortably in a Washington, D.C. hotel while a myriad of Republican presidential candidates sucked up to them, begging for their support and votes. The Traditional Values Coalition, another anti-gay hate group hosted a table filled with paraphernalia and Propofol, apparently in pulp form. The conference also entertained platforms for the Freedom Center, calling on the United Nations to be abolished, by tomorrow morning, if possible. There was also this new mysterious group called ‘Stop the Islamization of America,’ which was pressing its own ‘Preserving Freedom Conference’ next month in Nash-

ville. They want to stop the threat of Sharia Law from overturning every municipal ordinance from Peoria to Pensacola, or swallowing us all up, like those pea pods from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The AFA held the Friday luncheon, where I learned that the TV program Glee is in fact ‘the most horrifying show in America’, and presents a real threat to our children. Introduced as a hero to the crowd was none other than freshman female congressperson, Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) She got elected by parading a Neanderthal message to young conservatives- warning us that if you legalize gay marriage today, you will be opening the door to legalizing pedophilia and incest tomorrow. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) also mocked gay people repeatedly, which probably means you can talk to him about it on one of the next RSVP cruises. On and on the conference went, until the cannibals started devouring each other in their attempt to outflank their buddies. Even Mitt Romney and his Mormons were denounced as ‘operating a fake religion,’ by a Texas minister who has declared all Muslims should be deported. Romney wanted people to be more civil with each other, which explains why he finished last in the straw poll with 4 percent of the votes. My favorite was the guy who said while Muslims ‘present the greatest threat to America, homosexuals present the more immediate threat,’ as compared to a typhoon or hurricane. But then, if you remember what Reverend Pat Robertson once said, we gays are responsible for those too.

One week after being at the Human Rights Campaign dinner with a sea of 3,000 homosexuals in tuxedos dining on pressed chicken, I could not help but think how cool it would have been had both events been held at the same hotel at the same time. After a day there, with a head cold coming on, hung over by medical marijuana and homosexual trysts with Russian embassy staffers the night before, I returned home to the safety of Fort Lauderdale and the bosom of the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, where I knew the spirit of Reverend Kennedy would take good care of me. Somehow, the lesbian flight attendant and homosexual pilot negotiated the rough skies and got me home safely, even though I was seen reading the Koran on my iPad. America survives.

ow do you record or write the history of a secret, of something that until recently did not even dare to speak its name? Homosexuals have been around since Homo sapiens but how do you go about finding the progress of a minority that has throughout the centuries been perceived as everything from pariahs to child molesters? Who writes history? The victor gets to write it. The ruling class puts its stamp of approval on it. The parties in power twist it or change it to suit their own means. Often remarkably short-sighted and darkly colored views get recorded under the name of “history.” Take the Texas Board of Education. It voted 11-4 in favor of changing the textbook guidelines for history, economics, social studies, religion, capitalism and government to reflect a more conservative perspective of America, including which major cultural movements to focus on and which to leave out. On the other hand, this past summer, the State of California passed a law making Gay History a requirement in public schools. The law adds LGBT Americans to a long list of groups that should be represented in social studies classes. State Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, introduced the measure requiring public schools to teach the contributions, rights, history, and humanity of gay Americans. It was approved by the Assembly 49-25 on a party line vote July 5, and was signed into law nine days later. Supporters of the new law believe teaching gay history will help to foster tolerance on campus. UC Berkeley professor Tina Trujillo says a change in instruction can shift students’ opinions on a given subject. For the first time in the United States teachers are figuring out how to incorporate the new material into their classes. The teaching of Gay History becomes an historical landmark for our still fledgling movement. What do we know of our history? The further back we go the more doubtful its accuracy is, as is the case for the ancient Greeks and their student lovers. Or it is speculative and tentative, with little proof to back it up, when it applies to gay monarchs and popes through the ages. It is a collection of incomplete bits and

pieces when artists, writers, composers from previous centuries are discussed in a gay context. It becomes more reliable when we read about the horrors brought on, starting in 1871, by Germany’s Paragraph 175, which later became a tool for the persecution of homosexuals under Hitler’s Third Reich. Time can be a great, albeit slow, storyteller; churning forward while oppression inevitably gives way to acceptance. Students in California will perhaps have a chance to learn of the legal trials of Irish playwright Oscar Wilde, of the scandal of reparative therapy, the reason for ACT-UP, the travesty of disallowing gays in the military, the killing of Harvey Milk. But also the recorded post Stonewall celebrations, legacies born out of that seminal act of defiance such as Gay Pride events the world over, Gay Games, National Coming Out Day, the glory, mixed with the heartache of the AIDS Quilt, the repealing of both DADT and the sodomy law, openly gay politicians serving in Congress, same sex marriage in Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, plus Washington D.C. They are little dots and sparks when looked in the context of eons of history. We will take whatever we can get. We have been a people forced to hide ourselves and our history. But the secret is out, we have a story to tell the world. Millions of stories never told until now, and history is also written by common, everyday people. We have to take note of our achievements and mark the milestones that let us see how we came to be and where we are heading. As Dwight Eisenhower said, in 1961, what we have in front of us is: “The long lane of history yet to be written.”

Jon & Juan’s Wedding New Take on Off-Broadway Classic By J.W. Arnold

ere Comes the Bride?” Not Quite at Jon & Juan’s Wedding Straight or gay, any wedding is bound to offer plenty of real-life drama and “Jon & Juan’s Wedding,” a new production opening at the Broward Center this weekend, is no exception. “It’s a real wedding, but it’s not a real wedding,” explains producer Ellen Wedner, who does double duty as the wedding planner in the interactive show, which supposes how a gay wedding between Jewish and CubanAmerican gay men might play out, at least in five states and the District of Columbia. “We have a full dinner with the show, a toast donated by Asti Spumante, lots of songs and dancing, the hora and the ‘Hokey Pokey’,” explains Wedner. “We hope no

Stephen Perrot & Ernesto Reyes relationship in this world—gay or straight— who hasn’t lived through these stories.” For years, gay theater has focused on coming out stories or the AIDS epidemic, so the opportunity to tell a different story with the resources and production values at the Broward Center is exciting for the arts activist. As guests at Jon and Juan’s wedding party, audiences will be served a cross-cultural meal including Bubbe’s noodle kugel and salad, black beans and rice, Abuela’s ropa vieja and plantains, and of course, wedding cake, along with plenty of craziness from the outspoken families and friends of the grooms. Actor Andy Herrman, who portrays the singing “maid” of honor, David Schwartz in a drag alter ego named Veronica, predicts audiences will enjoy the interactive nature of the show, which grew out of improvisational rehearsals. “We spent three weeks in rehearsal and a lot of the story came out of improv,” Her-

The production kicks off the Center’s inaugural Pride series targeted at the LGBT community. “In 2002, everybody told us the idea of a gay wedding was wild, but times have really changed,” she says. “It really didn’t seem that far-fetched to me, and certainly weddings haven’t changed much since.” Wedner, who is straight, Jewish and married to a Catholic, drew on some of her own experiences of clashing culture for inspiration: “There is nobody that has had a

any in the audience on Saturday (Oct 8) stood to applaud the current production of Little Shop of Horrors which opened at the Lake Worth Playhouse on Oct 7 and will run through Oct 23 with shows at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s a fun rock musical, by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman that was originally launched in 1982 at the Orpheum Theatre in New York City produced by the WPA (Workshop of the Players’ Art) Theatre led by producing director Kyle Renick. One of the longest running off-Broadway shows ever, the award-winning musical is a perennial favorite and has been performed at theaters around the world. Little Shop of Horrors is the story of Seymour (Tom Cooch), a nebbishy plant man in love with the voluptuous Audrey (Mary Tesoriero), the cashier where they both

work at Mushnik’s Skid Row Downtown Florist Shop. Business has been so bad that Mushnik (Marc Streeter) is about to close down but just in time Seymour produces an amazing plant that apparently came to earth during a total solar eclipse and that now brings business to Mushnik’s and fame and fortune to Seymour. The musical opens with a 20th Century Motown Greek chorus comprised of Crystal (Nancy Saint Pierre), Ronnette (Nikki Bradley), and Chiffon (Shenise Nunez) who sing and dance and fill in the lines in the story making sure the audience gets the action, and the “messages” of the tale. The three women make a great team with solid voices and smooth execution of the straightforward choreography by Ricky Nahas. Nahas is also the director and delivers a production that is basically solid if a little uneven here and there. Cooch is Seymour and carries it off from start to finish. Streeter as Mushnik is excellent.You could imagine

encountering him in a shop on Manhattan’s Lower East Side – but maybe not at a florist’s. Tesoriero seems a little disconnected from the bathos of her role as Audrey but basically pulls it off with vocal mastery. Domenic Servidio as the dentist Orin, on the other hand, is extremely overblown and does not come across as an abusive straight man, dentist or otherwise. This seems as much a directorial oversight as an actor’s interpretation. Servidio also plays a number of walk-on roles which feel mostly like mildly modulated versions of his Orin character. Carl Barber-Steele is excellent as the voice of Audrey II although he occasionally sounds muffled. That may be due to the

sound system which seems to blur some sounds and lose some quality at the upper and lower reaches. The musical accompaniment is fine under the direction of Evan Ferrar who also plays the piano with Will Cromer on bass and Fred Weng on percussion. The amplified voices do not overwhelm the instruments nor does the ensemble drown out any of the softer vocals. The set by Norma Dobrikow O’Hep was functional and provided the illusion of an anywhere skyline even while containing the Skid Row street scene and the inside of Mushnik’s shop. And the lettering on the shop’s door is properly “backward.” Audrey II, the puppet, is well constructed and puppeteer Phillip Morgan beautifully synchs the plant’s movements to appear to be talking with Seymour one moment and lip-synching Barber-Steele’s off-stage speaking and singing the next. A sweaty Morgan was invited to join the actors for a welldeserved bow. I didn’t join my fellow patrons in the standing ovation last Saturday. The show is fun; the production is mostly solid. I’m glad I saw it and I would recommend it to others but having seen what the Playhouse is capable of with shows like “Rent” the overall production did not bring me to my feet.

comes to a resolution, Mikael’s story is left unfinished as he moves towards adolescence. This unfinished quality does not take away from the artistic cohesiveness of Tomboy. Instead, it adds another perspective—one that asks us to consider—where does a story end or begin? The Night Watch asks the same question—but with a more experimental story structure. Richard Laxton directs this British film, set during and after World War II in 1940s London. Based on a Sarah Waters novel, the story starts in 1947, then literally rewinds to three years in the past, then to three years before that, and fast forwards back to 1947. At first, it’s uncertain what has happened and how the central characters relate to each other. We are introduced to Kay (Anna Maxwell Martin), a comfortably out lesbian; Vivian (Jodie Whittaker), a woman having a long-term affair with a married man;Vivian’s brother, Duncan (Harry Treadaway), a gay man recently out of prison; and Helen (Claire Foy), a closeted lesbian, one of Vivian’s coworkers at a meet-up agency for singles. At the start of The Night Watch, the main character, Kay, aimlessly walks through London, smoking cigarettes. Dressed in a coat, tie and pants, her hair shorn, she is taken for a man. We learn of her work as a paramedic during the war—a position previously reserved for men. There’s clearly empowerment, but one of Kay’s friends cynically observes: “Looking like a man doesn’t give you the same rights.” After the war, Kay is left with a loss of purpose, and the loss of a lover taken not by the bombings, but by an ex-girlfriend. As a paramedic who witnesses the war’s devastation, Kay is acutely aware of how her situation compares—yet, she knows no balm for her distress. The disjointed narrative in The Night Watch may lose some viewers, but it mirrors the chaotic nature of war. When the story finally comes together—there is order and connection. Another kind of chaos and order are seen in the documentary Hit So Hard: The Life and Near Death Story of Patty Schemel, directed by P. David Ebersole. The former drummer of Hole, an addict in recovery, a lesbian, and funny as hell, Schemel’s wry twisted humor turns up when she talks about addiction: “I took a trip to… crack heroin

island and stayed out there for a long time.” In the documentary, former Hole bandmate, guitarist Eric Erlandson, shares his theory that drummers are comedians. Schemel’s video camera footage from the 90s gives further evidence of her funny streak— she plays to the camera, makes faces, dances. Hit So Hard also includes recent interviews with Schemel’s other bandmates: Courtney Love Cobain and Melissa Auf der Maur. Also featured—videotape from the Live Through This tour in the 90s. One clip shows Courtney stage-diving into an audience that strips her of a slip-as-dress and stockings. Carried back on-stage, wearing a black bra with a torn strap and black panties, she holds her ground: “You do that to all the guys?” Schemel doesn’t directly address feminism, but there is an undercurrent of female empowerment with other musicians interviewed for the documentary — Gina Schock from the Go-Go’s, Kate Schellenbach from Luscious Jackson, folk singer Phranc who says “…the grunge movement took all their fashion from…1970s lesbians… the jeans, the flannel shirts… it’s lesbian feminist fashion.” During production of Hole’s second album Celebrity Skin, Schemel’s producer and bandmates replaced her with a session drummer—“Johnny One-Take” as Schemel calls him. In the years that followed, she left the band and her sobriety by the wayside, ended up homeless. Hit So Hard interviews Schemel at different stages of her latest sobriety which covers five years. In some ways, the story of recovery is an unfinished story, an ongoing effort. Three films, three voices of substance and emotional complexity. The Joys of Berlin Before the Third Reich Christopher & His Kind Director, Geoffrey Sax Based on the book by Christopher Isherwood

his film opens with legendary gay writer Christopher Isherwood, sitting at a typewriter, in an astoundingly white room recalling his youthful days some 30-yearsprior when he was lured to Berlin to teach English. Although that wasn’t only it – he admits, “I went to Berlin for the boys.” The film then flashes to his widowed mother, who does not wish him to go to Germany. Her reasons seem unconvincing at first – she wants him to go to medical school, he is a vibrant young writer – until the camera catches a photograph of her late husband in WWI dress. She reminds Christopher that the Germans killed him in battle, pain still runs deep between the two nations, even as late as 1931. The film flashes back and forth between his breezy beachside home in California, the neat, cramped, Edwardian elegance of his mother’s home in England, and the heydays of Berlin cabarets. It delivers much the same story as in “The Berlin Stories” which later became the basis for the Academy-Award winning musical “Cabaret.” However, when he was asked to write “Christopher and His Kind” it was to expose the truth of those days, and he speaks about how he was always a gay rights activist. It is much the same characters, yet it is

a history, a memoir. He even names the real person behind Minnelli’s character, Jean Ross who like him left Berlin after the Nazi takeover. He bumps into her casually in London. She has become a communist, a reaction many people had to the advent of fascism. When asked if he can see her again she says farewell, implying that too much has passed, too many sad memories, of decadent people – gays, actors, bohemians – in addition to the loss of their wealthy Jewish friends the Landauers. Isherwood, in fact has lost someone too. He took his handsome German boyfriend to England only to see him sent back to Europe. This telling of the true story behind his legendary short stories is a British-produced film for television. The sexuality – both literal sex and the mystique of sex – is raw and beautifully caught. This film though will not capture the hearts of those who are not interested in the history of the time, the fact Isherwood took gay culture into the mainstream, living openly with his boyfriend in Hollywood, or are unaware of the musical “Cabaret.” However, Isherwood’s life, no matter how it is told – via fiction, or this more literal interpretation – will be an inspiration to anyone who wishes to learn to write about what one knows. Watching Prohibition – Ken Burns’ documentary aired on PBS last weekend. However, I am telling you about it now because many people were bored by his 2009 documentary, his 12-hour masterpiece entitled, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” They might well be the country’s best idea, but 12 hours – the length of some Korean operas – was not Mr. Burns’ best idea! Prohibition is less than six hours. Not only is the subject something Americans know very little about, other than it was the worst idea in our history, & most people think it was a bunch of Christian women, tired of being abused by “drunkard” husbands. There is far more to it than that, and not just the wonderful images Burns’ sources, the narration by Peter Coyote, Frances Sternhagen & others. The tidbits are amazing – the organizations women started against alcohol taught them to become suffragists, the U.S. banned alcohol but was the largest importer of cocktail shakers in the world, alcoholism soared more than any point in American history, &…young women became flappers & were having a ball. PBS will air this again but PBS.com streams the video & sells the DVD for less than $40, this is the most fun you’ll ever have watching a documentary.

Staying Pearl’s Rainbow – while this Key West guesthouse was founded as a woman’s only resort in 2000, a few years ago they decided to accept everyone. “Due, in part,” owner Heather Carruthers told SFGN’s magazine this September, “because gay people are getting more comfortable in more places and the need for separateness has fallen off.” As I was going to Key West a few weeks ago with my partner we did not need to stay at a gay male, clothing-optional resort. However, large corporateowned chain hotels do not appeal to me so…Pearl’s Rainbow was the right fit for us! At first I thought the ladies staying there would find us to be an annoyance. However, poolside & at the bar we were treated no differently. We had a lovely suite in the well-constructed, beautifully appointed, mid-19th century house, facing with a shared balcony. Breakfast was a delight. Pearl’s offers a dining card with your name & number of days you are staying. It entitled us to what boyfriend described as “a real breakfast,” not only Continental fare. Also, if you are a mixed-sports-fan-couple the happy hour was great, he watched a Florida State University game with the fun lesbian gals at the bar while…I… went shopping! ast week, we introduced you to Regina Satariano, an LGBT-activist based in gay tourism destination Torre del Lago in Tuscany who also owns popular gay nightclub Priscilla. The town is much like Provincetown or Wilton Manors, what wikipedia deems “a gay village.” Satariano and associates in that section of the Italian Riviera known as Versilia were interviewed and featured in L’espresso one of the most read newsweeklies in Italy last month. “This is the birthplace of Giaccomo Puccini, the great opera composer whose body of work often includes the depiction of many facets of real life including violence. Regina, together with the drag queens of the area belongs to the “Friendly Versilia” association, which in the last decade has turned this town into the most gay-friendly beach in all of Italy,” said L’espresso in a translation by Piero Guidugli, SFGN’s CEO and proud

Italian. “It has become a gay mecca with bars and sidewalk cafes and restaurants, street performers, tea dances and,” most importantly given Italy’s anti-gay culture, “thousands of young gays walking proudly, hand-in-hand.” Then, this summer, the tide changed. Conservative Italians sought to rid the village being a haven for the gay community. “The area became a target for vandalism against gay properties,” the article goes on to say, “sparking fights and attacks ignored by the police and authorities.” If you saw only a few scenes of the Amanda Knox trial in Perugia incidentally that city is not far from Torre del Lago you might find it curious a large crucifix dominates the courtroom. The cross in the Knox courtroom hangs above the judge, where in America an image of George Washington might be placed. In the case of Italy it should be an image of Garibaldi, the Italian patriot who united Italy under one flag in the 1850s.

Part two: Forza Torre del Lago, Stonewall a la Italia!

This is especially odd because Italians are increasingly secular and many only step inside a sanctuary for a wedding or a funeral. When you understand this imposing yet hypocritical concept of “God in the courtroom” you will understand why Stonewall, a la Italia, took place some 40 years later. A crucifix, for an Italian, is not merely “an idol” as the Westboro Baptists would drolly infer but is a visual connection to their God. Or in the Italian case, good oldfashioned, Italian-Catholic guilt. Gays for perhaps the first time in Italian LGBT-history organized themselves and fought back against fines and “bogus infractions limiting their hours of operation.” Regina which means “queen” in English said, basta, enough! She stood in front of her nightclub declaring she would refuse food and water until the gay business owners’ venues were left alone. An Italian refusing food…well, this is very serious! “If they shut down Priscilla, we will all be unemployed,” Satariano exclaimed. In these rough times, there are fewer jobs to go around. A community thought of as second-class is invisible when it comes to

being employed, more so in bad economies. LGBT-people often can only find work and acceptance in gay owned-businesses. Alessio de Giorgi, another activist SFGN met this spring owns a nightclub in the village of Torre del Lago. His disco, Mamma Mia, neighbors Priscilla. He promised to constantly be “on guard against the right wing fanatics who just want us to disappear back in the closet.” A sit-in was threatened on the steps of the city hall, and the mayor against a crowd of protestors and LGBT-organizations from not only Torre del Lago but all over Italy had no choice but to relent. The clubs, and “Friendly Virsilia” business owners are allowed to stay open. “At least for now. Until the next round. But a point was made and a battle won,” states the article in L’espresso. Like all revolutions it takes only a few voices to release a “shot heard round the world.” At soccer games in Italy they shout “Forza Milano,” “Forza Roma,” meaning, “Go team go!” Therefore, in a play on the machismo of Italian culture, the LGBT-community in the United States says “Forza Torre del Lago!”
