on’t want to “come to the test?” Worry not. It’ll come to you. At least that’ll be the case if Dr. Susan Little, Professor of Medicine and head of UCSD’s Anti-Viral Research Center’s “Lead the Way” campaign, has her way. Starting in 2011, Dr. Little and her colleagues began going door to door with a mobile HIV testing vehicle, certified testing technicians, and an advanced HIV testing lab aimed at bringing awareness to the community about the necessity of HIV testing. They also hope to help increase the number of people being tested from representative portions of the American population as a whole rather than allowing the confinement of testing to populations who are “assumed”

to be at higher risk of contracting the virus. This year she focused her efforts in specific locations in the San Diego area and, on World AIDS day, Dec. 1, took to the streets. Literally. “We didn’t pick these locations these two zip codes in particular because of proximity. Rather, we picked them because they are both highly representative of the varying demographics that make up the US population and most important, because increased testing helps validate the advances being made with new treatments and helps raise general community awareness about the disease,” Little says. She adds that less than 50 percent of the population have been tested for HIV/AIDS. This not only negatively affects the usage of new treatment modalities, but can skew the

actual proportions of the population that are more likely to carry HIV/AIDS. In fact, one of her colleagues and manager of community outreach and relations, Joshua Romero, says the myth that HIV/ AIDS is confined to gays still persists in the community. “Statistically, the population with the highest rate of HIV/AIDS are actually heterosexual black women,” Romero says. This statistic, while perhaps not set in stone due to the lack of individuals willing to be tested, is part of what “Lead the Way” is aiming to better define. The campaign hopes to not only better identify communities which may be more susceptible to the disease, but to catch it in its early stages and apply new treatments to early stage patients. “Less than 5 percent of people who choose to get tested find out they are positive,” Romero says. “And what is difficult is that the majority of those people who do choose to get tested are men between the ages of 21 and 30. A little over 20 percent of those tested are women. And really, the whole cause is to show people that everyone needs to be tested, not just a certain community.” He adds that, in addition to the test itself, those who do agree to be tested in the door-to-door campaign (roughly 4 percent of the approximately 80,000 potential participants) are surveyed via a short questionnaire, which is not based on sexuality. Instead, he says, they’re asked questions

relating to why they chose never to be tested before. “Sexual orientation is of little difference to this cause. We want to find out first, why people aren’t getting tested, second, make them aware of why they need to be tested and last, make sure they understand it’s not something to be afraid of.” Romero says the group is in the process of posting the survey online so those who don’t feel comfortable answering the questions on-site can do so in the privacy of their own homes and on their own time. “All we want to do is let people know that they need to be tested and why. Then we can truly go in to action,” he adds. That action is to take the doorto-door campaign countywide and then hopefully, nationwide. Dr. Little looks at the campaign as less of a demographic study and more of a reason to encourage those not knowing they have AIDS to seek treatment. “My specialty is acute diagnosis, and that means that with this door-todoor campaign, not only are we taking a regular test to determine status, we are taking blood and sending it to a lab to have it analyzed for those anti-bodies which are just forming that will possibly cause a false negative at the moment, but lead to a positive diagnosis in as little as months down the road once they develop.” Still, the focus of Dr. Little and all of her colleagues aside from awareness is helping the community that lives with HIV/ AIDS receive proper treatment. “Drugs for HIV/AIDS have progressed to the point where no longer are you immediately issued a death sentence when you’re diagnosed as positive,” Romero says. Indeed, diagnosis is more a step than a condemnation as far as he sees it. “At this point, it’s almost like being diagnosed with any other ailment,” he says. There are effective treatments available for people with HIV/AIDS that allow them to live relatively normal, long lives after being diagnosed with the disease.” The kicker, of course, is that people need to get tested and be treated, both Little and Romero says. And if San Diego is any indication of what’s to come in the future, perhaps the day will soon come where the HIV/ AIDS testing van will arrive at doors across America. New Bike Sharing Program Launched

C

ity Commissioner Charlotte Rodstrom announced that Fort Lauderdale, in conjunction with Broward County and other cities, will launch a new bike-sharing program across the area, titled, ‘B-Cycle.’ Rodstrom is a strong advocate of the program. There will initially be 10 stations in the city where bikes can be rented or dropped off, with others in Hollywood and Pompano Beach. More stations will be set up later. There will be 200 bikes available around the county at the launch for use by anyone 18 and older. To rent bikes, residents and tourists can register on the B-Cycle website – http://broward.bcycle.com – or at the bike-sharing stations. People may purchase day, weekly and annual passes to use the bikes. Locations can be checked online. They include Seabreeze Blvd at the corner of Las Olas, Esplanade Park, George English Park, and Art Serve. The county retained B-Cycle LLC to start and manage the program. Such bikesharing programs have quickly expanded around the world and include such cities as Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, San Antonio and Washington, D.C. The B-Cycle bikes are equipped with computers to track mileage, calories burned and carbon offsets. Riders can monitor their personal fitness and see their contributions to the county’s green efforts.

Navy Linguist Reinstated After Gay Ban Discharge

A

Navy linguist discharged under the now-repealed military policy banning homosexuals from serving openly has been reinstated and he’s heading for the Monterey Defense Language Institute. The Los Angeles Times says 29-year-old Petty Officer 2nd Class Jase Daniels was sworn back into the Navy on Monday in San Diego. Daniels was discharged in 2007 after he was featured in a Stars & Stripes newspaper article about gay military personnel. Daniels, who served a year in Kuwait before his discharge, is a Hebrew linguist. He will study Farsi, which is spoken in Iran and Afghanistan. Daniels was one of three plaintiffs in a 2010 case challenging the military ``don’t ask, don’t tell’’ policy. Reinstatement bids by an Air Force major and an Air Force staff sergeant are pending.

U.S. Gay Bishop Responds to Rick Perry Ad

T

he Episcopal Church’s first openly gay bishop says Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry has hit a new low with a campaign ad attacking President Barack Obama on gay rights and religion. The ad is intended to appeal to Christian conservatives who typically dominate the Iowa caucuses, which are the first vote on the road to the 2012 presidential election. The ad features the Texas governor saying there’s something wrong in America when gays can serve openly in the military but kids can’t pray in schools. Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire responded Tuesday with an opinion piece in The Washington Post newspaper in which he says Perry would be pathetic if he weren’t so infuriating. Robinson says someone who aspires to be commander in chief shouldn’t denigrate the gay and lesbian soldiers he would lead. New Hampshire holds the first election primary Jan. 10.

Cops Bothering Gays in Kent County Parks

A

ctivists in the Grand Rapids area say sheriff’s deputies have been unfairly targeting gay men in Kent County parks. Critics told county commissioners Tuesday that undercover officers are entrapping gay men through casual conversation or arresting them for holding hands. Attorney Miriam Aukerman of the American Civil Liberties Union says there’s nothing wrong with gay men flirting in a park. Kent County Sheriff Larry Stelma denies that anyone is being arrested for holding hands. He says deputies are just trying to keep parks safe for everyone. Michigan law bars someone from using a public place to invite someone to commit a “lewd or immoral act.’’ Aukerman says that could apply to any bar on weekends. The Grand Rapids Press says county lawyers plan to offer the accused more rights.

Same-sex Penguin Pair Find Female Partners

I

t appears a female has come between one of Canada’s celebrity couples. Toronto’s zoo split up a pair of male penguins last month whose affection for each other drew headlines and jokes about “Brokeback Iceberg.’’ The zoo said Monday that Buddy and Pedro have been officially separated and Buddy has mated with a female. Pedro has yet to get lucky, but officials say it’s not for a lack of trying. The birds’ separation was one zoo officials said was necessary because penguins are an endangered species and the two needed to mate with females. The African penguins had shared the nest they built since coming to the zoo about a year ago. Curator Tom Mason describes their bond as social – not sexual – and says when the birds rejoin the general population, they are likely to stay with their female matches go their separate ways. The story of the pair, who came to be known as Toronto’s “gay penguins,’’ went viral online, leading to cheeky YouTube videos. Late-night TV comics jumped into the icy waters of penguin passion. Jimmy Kimmel riffed on the story during a recent monologue, calling it ``Brokeback Iceberg’’ and claiming the lovebirds were spotted at a Lady Gaga concert Buddy, who is 21, had a female mate for 10 years and produced some offspring before his partner died. Pedro, 10, has yet to produce any offspring.

ENTURA, California (AP) A U.S. teenager was sentenced on Monday to 21 years in state prison for shooting a gay student in the back of the head, killing him during a computer lab class three years ago. Brandon McInerney, 17, didn’t speak at the hearing but his lawyer Scott Wippert said his client was sorry for killing 15-yearold Larry King. “He feels deeply remorseful and stated repeatedly if he could go back and take back what he did he would do it in a heartbeat, Wippert said. King’s family said they couldn’t forgive their son’s killer. “You took upon yourself to be a bully and to hate a smaller kid, wanting to be the big man on campus,” King’s father, Greg King, said on behalf of his wife. “You have left a big hole in my heart where Larry was and it can never be filled.” In a deal reached with Ventura County prosecutors last month, McInerney agreed to avoid a retrial and to plead guilty to second-degree murder, as well as one count each of voluntary manslaughter and use of a firearm.

A mistrial was declared in September when jurors couldn’t reach a unanimous decision on the degree of guilt. Several jurors said after McInerney’s trial that he shouldn’t have been tried as an adult. Leading up to the February 2008 killing, teachers and students saw a dispute growing between King and McInerney, who shot King twice in the head in a computer lab at E.O Green Junior High School. McInerney, then 14, had reached an emotional breaking point after King made repeated, unwanted sexual advances toward him and other boys, defense lawyers said. In the weeks leading up to the shooting, school administrators allowed King to wear heels and makeup because federal law provides the right of students to express their sexual orientation. The case drew widespread attention because of its shocking premise and raised questions about how schools should deal with students and sexual identity issues. Comic Ellen DeGeneres, a lesbian, weighed in on her talk show shortly after the shooting and said gays shouldn’t be treated as second-class citizens. Because of pretrial publicity, the trial was moved from Ventura County to

Los Angeles. Prosecutors said the shooting in front of stunned classmates was first-degree murder and that McInerney should be punished as an adult. They argued the shooting was a hate crime, an aspect jurors rejected, after authorities found white supremacist mate-

Mississippi Mayor’s Gay Sex Shop Purchase Billed to City By Associated Press

S

OUTHAVEN, Miss. Receipts show Southaven Mayor Greg Davis, a Republican who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2008 on a family-values platform, charged the city $67 for a purchase at a gay sex shop in Canada. The Mississippi auditor on Nov. 2 demanded Davis pay back more than $170,000 for personal expenses billed to taxpayers. There are no criminal charges from the auditor’s investigation. The FBI confirmed Dec. 7 that it is investigating Davis after the auditor’s probe showed possible violations of federal laws. The Commercial Appeal reported Friday that Davis has repaid about $96,000. Southaven is a suburb of Memphis, Tenn., and has grown rapidly in recent years. With a 2010 population of 48,982, it is now Mississippi’s third-largest city. The auditor’s office provided Southaven officials with copies of Davis’ receipts. Aldermen originally approved paying the may-

or’s expenses and now say they’re reviewing hundreds of pages of the documents to see whether some of the receipts were for legitimate city business. The Commercial Appeal reported it obtained Davis’ receipts through a Freedom of Information request to Southaven. The newspaper reports Davis billed the city for expensive dinners and thousands of dollars in liquor. Although officials are allowed to charge for business meals, it was not immediately clear how many of Davis’ food and liquor purchases were for business. The auditor’s office confirmed to The Associated Press on Friday that Davis billed the city for the $67 purchase at Priape, which describes itself on its website as “Canada’s premiere gay lifestyle store and sex shop.” Davis declined to comment on the expenses, saying his attorney had told him not to talk. “I can’t say anything,” Davis told the AP on Friday. The 45-year-old mayor told The Com-

mercial Appeal he doesn’t remember what he bought at the sex shop, which he visited on a recruitment trip with warehouse developers. Davis, who divorced this year, told The Commercial Appeal on Thursday that he is gay. It was the first time he had said so publicly. “At this point in my life and in my career, while I have tried to maintain separation between my personal and public life, it is obvious that this can no longer remain the case,” Davis said. “While I have performed my job as mayor, in my opinion, as a very conservative, progressive individual and still continue to be a very conservative individual I think that it is important that I discuss the struggles I have had over the last few years when I came to the realization that I am gay.” Alderman Ronnie Hale said he and his colleagues are reviewing receipts to find spending they remember as city business to try to accurately show the amount Davis must repay.

rials in his home. Defense attorneys, who unsuccessfully argued to keep the case in juvenile court, said it was voluntary manslaughter because McInerney lost control of his emotions. They said the teen was beaten by his father and was described as a bright student who lost his motivation. King’s father also blamed the school district for not doing more to address the brewing feud between the two teens and their son’s flamboyant behavior. “Instead of protecting him from himself and his poor impulse control, they enabled and encouraged him to become more and more provocative,” Greg King said. King’s family and Deputy District Attorney Maeve Fox wore buttons with the teen’s face on it, while some of McInerney’s supporters wore powder blue wristbands that read “Save Brandon.” After serving nearly four years since King’s slaying, with the additional 21 years McInerney will be released just before his 39th birthday. His murder conviction will be stayed, and the plea deal calls for McInerney to be given the harshest sentence under California law for voluntary manslaughter 11 years and use of a firearm 10 years, prosecutors said. McInerney is ineligible for time served or good behavior because he pleaded guilty to murder.

Hale said he had examined roughly onethird of the stack by Friday and recognized some that were connected to municipal meetings. “I feel like the majority of the receipts are legitimate,” Hale told AP. “It’s just that he doesn’t have documentation.” Hale acknowledged Davis appears to have spent city money on personal purchases, but said he supports Davis continuing as mayor. “His heart is with the city of Southaven,” Hale said. “Has he made some questionable expenses? Sure he has.” Hale said he has “absolutely no comment on the mayor’s personal life.” Hale said the city has hired an additional finance official and tightened requirements for reimbursement in April. Davis served in the Mississippi House before he was elected mayor. As a legislator and a 2008 congressional candidate, he talked frequently about being a fiscal conservative. During the congressional campaign, his then-wife, Suzann Davis, talked about her husband’s conservative values. “I know Greg’s heart,” she said in a TV ad. “He has a strong faith in God, and no one will fight harder for all our families.”

Letter to the Editor

Gay Softball League Responds to SFGN Article Dear Editor, We deeply appreciate your coverage on the settlement of the lawsuit filed against NAGAAA by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) calling into question the legality of limiting the participation of non-LGBT persons in the Gay Softball World Series (GSWS). In response to the article we would like to reiterate NAGAAA’s commitment to both welcoming and encouraging inclusion and diversity. It is one of our core values. It is also important to maintain both the spirit and welcoming culture LGBT athletes experience and enjoy at the GSWS. We continue to believe and the courts have upheld that we have the legal right to define our organization’s participation. Fortunately, judgments in three key pre-trial motions have given iron-clad strength to right of self-governance, leaving only the question of the treatment of the protesters themselves during the protest process. While clearly winning on the legal rights of our organization to operate within the parameters we ourselves define, the NAGAAA executive committee determined it to be in our organization’s best interests to settle the non-legal claims raised by the plaintiffs and have therefore made the following concessions: NAGAAA recognizes that the disqualification of the San Francisco D2 team was not consistent with our intention of being inclusive of bisexual players and conducting its Protest Hearings in a manner that does not cause undue offense; and NAGAAA confirms that its records will be amended to reflect the participation of the Plaintiffs and their team in the 2008 GSWS, including the results of all games played by D2, and that D2 is recognized as a second place winner, and will be awarded a second place trophy, for that Series. We are pleased the plaintiffs are satisfied and feel strongly that we as an organization have been vindicated. We are also pleased to be able to put this Please send your letters to: matter to rest, once and for all.

McNaught’s Notes

Seatbelt Extenders for the Selfish?

By Brian McNaught

I

t always makes me sad when I see an obese person on an airplane need to ask for a seatbelt extender and look self-conscious. Some passengers look away, trying to spare the person any more embarrassment than he or she seems to be feeling already. I try instead to make eye contact, nod, and smile as warmly as I can. Do you think there are seatbelt extenders for the selfish? If the manifestation of our egos got on a plane, do you think the self-obsessed would want us to look away as they asked for extra help to fit safely into their seat? Would eye contact, a nod, and a warm smile comfort them? A local friend recently told me about a Haitian-born girl in a nearby elementary school whose classmates avoid her because she smells so bad. Her teacher learned that her family couldn’t afford soap. They had to choose between rice and Ivory. This is not in the slums of India, but rather in a shiny U.S. city of economic success. Because my world is heavily populated with LGBT people, I’m more keenly aware of my own community’s giving habits. It’s always made me very proud to reflect on the angels of mercy who responded with such courage during the worst of the AIDS epidemic. I feel badly that today’s gay and lesbian youth have little or no awareness of that period of our history. Knowing more about the heroic sacrifices made by older gay people might make a difference in the self-esteem of our youth, and in their attitudes about giving back to the community. This is the season for giving, but I’m one of those people who hate asking others for money. I’d rather grab the restaurant bill than wait for others to share the expense. But lately I have been asking other people for money to support the really important work of the Stonewall National Museum &

Archives. It’s a project that Ray and I have poured ourselves into because the museum is not just finding and saving stories of our community’s survival and success, but is also telling them to today’s and tomorrow’s gay and straight youths. I don’t equate Stonewall with the unwashed local schoolgirl, but this process of extending my hand for help has often underscored for me the contrast between need and greed. There’s a powerful scene in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in which Scrooge watches from his window as ghosts of the rich try to throw coins of assistance to a starving mother and child. This one paragraph has impacted my life more than anything else Dickens wrote. The air was filled with phantoms, wandering hither and thither in restless haste, and moaning as they went. Every one of them wore chains like Marley’s Ghost; some few (they might be guilty governments) were linked together; none were free. Many had been personally known to Scrooge in their lives. He had been quite familiar with one old ghost, in a white waistcoat, with a monstrous iron safe attached to its ankle, who “ cried piteously at being unable to assist a wretched woman with an infant, whom it saw below, upon a door-step. The misery with them all was, clearly, that they sought to interfere, for good, in human matters, and had lost the power for ever. Ray and I live like princes, never – wanting for a thing. tle, but we have everything we want and need, which makes us rich. As such, we feel a responsibility to share our good fortune with those in need. Sometimes it’s in little ways, like giving a dollar each time we’re approached by a homeless person at a stoplight, or contributing to the food bank each time we check out at the grocery store. We support food programs for kids with HIV in Tanzania, and the repair of poor children’s teeth in Peru. We give to nearly every non-

profit that works on behalf of our community, though lately we’ve been cutting back on the size of our gifts to groups that have huge corporate sponsorships. We also feel the responsibility to leave our wealth to the LGBT community rather than to the Church that condemns us, to a relative whose life has nothing to do with ours, or to a pet. Currently, our estate goes to Stonewall. As I age, I’ve become more conscious of the arbitrariness of things we humans have created in our search for purpose, such as country and state borders, calendar months and days, and the value we assign things. I wonder more and more about why we kill each other in the name of what I think of as imaginary people in the sky? Why do we call the Bible the “Good Book,” or the Pope the “Holy Father?” But mostly, I’ve become aware of the injustice of the way our human family lives. It’s embarrassing to think that we spend as much as we do on jewelry, dogs, referendums, political campaigns, perfumes, amusements, and fine food when a little schoolgirl in the U.S. smells because her family can’t afford soap. Who, do you imagine, will be the people and the causes we will want to throw coins at when we are phantoms in misery? Will LGBT people wish they had spent more on educating our youths than on expensive rings and trips to New York for Broadway shows? Will our selfishness cause any of us to need seatbelt extenders for our egos when we board the plane for our next adventure? And how will we feel if the friendless, Haitian-born youngster is sitting next to us?

A Day inGay South Florida On November 12, 2011 we assigned our photographers to capture one day in the life of South Florida’s LGBT community. We also asked residents to submit photos as well. Too often in the news we read about politicians or celebrities. Rarely do we hear about the people that actually make up the LGBT community – us. From the waiters and hairdressers to the retirees and bankers. That’s why in this issue we wanted to celebrate the lives everyday people. These photos are a reminder that the LGBT community is numerous anddiverse – that we shop at the farmer’s market, take early morning jogs, get haircuts, work, celebrate and play. This issue is a reminder that all our community really wants is to be treated the same as our straight counterparts. And these photos show that we are the same. We do the same things. We live and enjoy the same lives. We are the same. Additional photos are available online. Go to SFGN.com/GSFday

Mills hopes to go one step further from the popular “It Gets Better” campaign. Mills has written an independent feature film, “Just a Small Town Boy,” based on his own experiences growing up in a small town in rural Kentucky. He tells the story of Travis Mitchell (played by Blaine Reagan) who is captain of the revered school basketball team and who is keeping a secret. Mills, along with co-producer Clint Davis of Fort Lauderdale, plans to film the movie entirely in South Florida and submit the finished project to gay and lesbian film festivals across the country, with the hopes of finding a distributer for theatrical release. The film has a $19,000 budget and most of the costs include locations, permits and salaries for the actors and crew. Mills and Davis are relying on online “crowd fundraising” to make the project a reality and donations from $10 to $2500 are being accepted at Indiegogo.com/just-a-smalltown-boy. To learn more about the film, go to JustaSmallTownBoyFilm.com.

The calendars are just $10 and proceeds support local HIV/AIDS service provider Shadowood II. The party starts at 9 p.m. and runs until close. little hottie knows how to model a Santa hat, but he won’t show you what’s in his bag! Maybe he’ll let you sit on his lap at 1721 N. Andrews Ave. Saturday, Dec. 24 Before he visits all the good little boys and girls, Santa is making a stop at The Manor, 2345 Wilton Dr. in Wilton Manors. Get your picture taken with Santa and don’t miss the special holiday performances from Erika Norell and recording artist Aiden Lesli. And DJ Oren Nizri will be giving the gift of music from the booth all night long. Meanwhile, in Miami Beach, Score features DJ Jalil Z for its Bigger Saturdays Christmas Party. Alex Prieto is your host and Chambord vodka cocktails are just $6. Score is located at 727 Lincoln Rd. Sunday, Dec. 25 After a day with the family, you’re probably going to be ready for a little action (and a way to work off that big Christmas dinner). Boom in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors hosts its weekly Jackhammer tea dance with a special Christmas party featuring DJs Richie Rich and Frank Corr. In Miami-Dade, Cameo, 1445 Washington Ave. in Miami Beach hosts La Leche tonight with Javier Medina and DJ Theresa. This is going to be a huge party because all the cheap advance tickets are already sold out. Better pull out some of that cash Grandma gave you for Christmas! She did tell you to buy yourself something nice, like a great night out on the dance floor. Monday, Dec. 26 The day after Christmas is a big holiday in Great Britain, “Boxing Day.” Since Christmas fell on Sunday, we get a three day weekend thanks to the federal holiday. Stop by Mona’s Cocktail Lounge, 502 E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, for the bar’s annual “Left Over Christmas Grab Bag.” It’s never too soon to regift and you won’t believe what Jerry Schultz has got wrapped up.

The

Food chick By Chef Marci Boland

The Classics A

round this time of year – I like to serve (and eat!) The classics – and the comfort food. American Food started to became Fabulous in the Fifties. Hollywood’s Golden Age helped create the beginning of what is now known as American Cuisine. The glamour, the glitz, the desire to be indulgent and whimsical gave everyone hope for the future. Times were different, portions smaller and the cuisine was classic, with a combination of American and Continental flare. Restaurants were redolent with red leather booths, dark mahogany counters, velvet walls and even some “seasoned” wait staff created an atmosphere that is evocative of that era where people drank Martini’s in lieu of Mojitos, and where the baked potato was the ultimate vegetable. Much of the time was defined for its Martinis, Manhattans and Gimlets and the ubiquitous cocktail hour, served mostly with cheese & crackers or veggies with dip. Dishes like the Welsh Rarebit, a Delmonico Steak, Tableside Caesar Salad, Shrimp Cocktail, and Cherries Jubilee – with the waiter impressing us with tableside flambé skills were the ultimate indulgences at the time. We take some of these classics for granted now – but when they are made perfectly, with just the right ingredients – it can be a real treat to make and enjoy.

The Dean Martini Dean Martin himself lent us this recipe. Two parts good gin or vodka, a dash of dry vermouth, and the juice of a ripe olive, Shaken by the sexiest person in the house and served straight up with no frills- just the way Deano would do it. Perfect for this recipe is the Dirty Sue Martini Mix available Exclusively in South Florida at the L’Hermitage Gourmet Emporium (954-568-2383). Serve with our “Filthy” olivesyou have to see them to believe them!

For the Perfect Table Side Caesar One of my favorite salads and one that I usually request when dining out is Caesar Salad. I remember dining at a couple of restaurants in New York City where they made the Caesar Salad table side with such flair and showmanship. Now you are lucky if they make the dressing from scratch. For those of you who are not fans of anchovies, you may be interested in knowing the original recipe for this salad did not include them. For the Croutons: 2 large garlic cloves 1 Pinch of salt 3 tablespoons virgin olive oil 2 cups French baguette slices cut up into 1/2 inch cubes (white bread works too) For the Salad: 1 large egg 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 medium garlic clove crushed 1 pinch of salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 ½ teaspoons anchovy paste 1 teaspoon capers 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 medium heads of romaine lettuce – outer leaves removed 1/3 cup parmesan cheese – grated Prepping the croutons Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Crush the garlic cloves with the side of a – chef’s knife (be very careful) or with a garlic press. Slice up the baguette and cut them into 1/2 inch cubes. Prepping the salad Again crush the garlic. Grate the Parmesan cheese. It’s always better to grate it yourself if you have the opportunity. Croutons - Combine garlic, oil, salt, and bread cubes in a bowl. Mix until cubes are coated evenly. Spread the coated cubes onto a baking sheet and bake until the croutons are golden. This should take about 10 minutes. To make the salad - Bring a pot of boiling water to boil, add egg and cook for just 45 seconds....NO MORE. This is coddling the egg. Remove from heat and let it cool off.

Meanwhile, mix the Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, garlic, salt & pepper, anchovy, mustard and capers in a bowl. Crack egg and add to these ingredients. Whisk until smooth. Now for the tricky part: Slowly add the oil in a steady stream while constantly whisking again until smooth. Reason: if you add the oil too quickly, the dressing will be separate and not emulsify. To serve: Tear the romaine lettuce into 1-2 inch pieces and add them to a large bowl (wooden if you have one). Add half the dressing, toss, add remaining dressing, Parmesan cheese, and croutons and toss again. Serve on chilled plates. Shrimp Cocktail (for 6) 1 lemon Kosher salt 2 pounds large shrimp in the shell (about 30) 1/2 cup chili sauce (recommended: Thai Sweet Chile Sauce) 1/2 cup ketchup 3 tablespoons prepared horseradish 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce ¼ cup beer 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce (recommended: Tabasco) Directions Cut the lemon in half and add it to a large pot of boiling salted water. Add the shrimp and cook, uncovered, for only 3 minutes, until the shrimp are just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon to a bowl of cool water. When the shrimp are cool enough to handle, peel and devein them. Keep cold until ready to serve. For the cocktail sauce, combine the chili sauce, ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce. Serve with the shrimp.

Welsh Rarebit Hors D’Oeuvres style • 10 firm white bread slices (each about 4x4 inches), toasted, crusts trimmed • 2 1/2 cups (packed) grated sharp cheddar cheese (about 8 ounces) • 5 tablespoons mayo (enough to bind) • 3/4 cup chopped Scallions Mix last three ingredients and Spoon over toasted bread slices to cover. Place on baking sheet. (Can be made 4 hours ahead and Chill.) Preheat broiler. Broil until topping begins to brown, watching to avoid burning and turning baking sheet around, if necessary, for even broiling, about 2 minutes. Cool 2 minutes. Cut each slice into quarters. Transfer to platter; serve. Bon Apetit! Downtown Galveston’s Strand District.

historic

Texas Coast: Galveston, Corpus Christi, and South Padre Island By Andrew Collins

A

lthough America’s Gulf Coast doesn’t have any major gay beach resorts, the Texas barrier island of Galveston has steadily become a popular destination with GLBT travelers. About 220 miles south, the coast’s largest city, Corpus Christi, contains a number of notable attractions as well as the coast’s only gay bar south of Galveston. And at the southern tip of the Texas coast, scenic South Padre

andrew collins

T R A V EL Island has developed increased cachet as a getaway, thanks in part to biannual Splash South Padre Island gay parties. Here’s a look at these three classic coastal getaways in Texas.

Galveston The historic and charming city of Galveston (www.galveston.com) is a haven of sandy beaches, opulent Victorian houses, and touristy but engaging seafood restaurants and souvenir shops. Gays and lesbians – many from Houston, 50 miles inland – regularly visit here. With colorful architecture, a small but discernible arts scene, and a laid-back demeanor reminiscent of Key West and New Orleans, this city of 48,000 is a bit more open-minded and offbeat than any other on the Texas Gulf Coast. Galveston occupies a narrow, 32-mile-long, windswept coastal island. Several historic neighborhoods abound with stately old mansions and cheerful clapboard cottages, and

the main drag along the shoreline, Seawall Boulevard, bustles with seafood restaurants, chain hotels, and shops selling postcards, seashells, swimsuits, and sunglasses. If you’re a beach lover, you’ll want to hang out around the shorefront neighborhoods, but the city’s vibrant and quirky personality reveals itself most strongly a couple of miles north, in the downtown Strand Historic District, which overlooks Galveston Bay. This warren of palm-shaded cobblestone lanes is punctuated by a few tall buildings. There are numerous attractions to keep you busy around Galveston, the most famous being the Moody Gardens, a dazzling natureoriented complex consisting of three huge pyramidal buildings housing a vast tropical rain forest, an aquarium, and a science museum. Other points of interest include downtown’s Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum, in which you can explore an actual retired oil rig; the dramatic 1894 Grand Opera House, which now presents theater and

music events; and the Texas Seaport Museum, which is home to 1877 Tall Ship Elissa. If you start to feel a little peckish, downtown’s festive Yaga’s Cafe (www.yagaspresents.com) is a longtime favorite for casual Caribbean-inspired fare. For extremely tasty Latin American and Mexican fare, including delicious Gulf snapper ceviche, head to Rudy & Paco (www.rudyandpaco.com).
