ongtime West Palm Beach Commissioner and LGBT advocate, Bill Moss, 67, died last week, two weeks after winning a tough re-election campaign. “Commissioner Moss was a strong advocate for the LGBT community in our community and put his words into action,” said supporter Rick Rose, co-owner of Grandview Gardens in West Palm Beach. “West Palm Beach was one of the first cities to offer a domestic partner registry for same sex couples AND offer benefits for same sex partners of city employees. Commissioner Moss was one of the main supporters of these initiatives.”

Miami Beach Launches Gay Friendly Hospitality Program
Pink Flamingo hospitality program caters to LGBT travelers By Steven N. Adkins
T
here is no denying that tourism is the market driver of our South Florida economy. The loyal global LGBT market has continued to prop up our tax receipts and estimates project that we will spend in excess of $1.7 billion locally this year soaking up the sun and reveling in all great things our destination has to offer. The Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) in partnership with the GMCVB, MBVCA, GMBHA, and the LGBT Visitor Center (sponsored by MetLife) have created the Pink Flamingo Hospitality Certi-

Steven Adkins fication Program to ensure we do our best for our LGBT visitors. The Pink Flamingo Hospitality Certification Program will be conducted by MDGLCC partner, YES Institute, the industry source for knowledge on gender and orientation. YES institute will provide one-hour educa-
tional workshops for hoteliers that address fears and misinformation that lead to discrimination by using a unique discussion method designed to turn “us vs. them” into just “us,” so no one is seen as an outsider. So as several hoteliers across the country are presenting deals to lure gay newlyweds, Miami Beach hotels who are members of the MDGLCC will be taking it one step further. Several of them will be offering love birds complete gay-friendly packages that can guarantee no questions asked when guests show up for their king-bedded suite and no raised eyebrows for holding hands poolside. Any demands to make their guests feel at home will be met. Once certified in the Pink Flamingo Hospitality Program, hoteliers will be promoted on the MDGLCC website as a recommended stay for LGBT travelers and will receive tokens that guests can redeem for a gift bag at the LGBT Visitor Center. In exchange for the gift bag, visitors are asked to fill out a brief survey about their travel opinions. With the recent surge in gay marriage, Miami Beach hoteliers understand the many benefits of certification. For more information on the The Pink Flamingo Hospitality Certification Program or to become a member of the MDGLCC please contact us at 305-673-4440, mdglcc@bellsouth.net, or www. gaybizmiami.com

Tired, but Inspired: Reflecting on Pride 2012 By Julie Seaver
N
ow that PrideFest season is over in South Florida, I must be honest. With no pun intended, I am straight up tired. March is a lot like boot camp for gays around here and my body feels like it was run over by a rainbow-sequined truck. For me, out of this feeling of tired, always comes inspiration. From permit applications to PBSO, and from posters to post-Pride bliss, most organizers begin the planning process for next year before the event has even popped its first cork. After the pictures are posted and the last drop of aloe is used, each muscle ache and sunburnt nose is worn like a badge of honor. So who are we and why do we this to ourselves each year? We are the hardworking staff, volunteers and supporters of Compass, Pride South Florida and Pride of the Treasure Coast. We believe in the power of grassroots organizing and paying it forward to each oth-
er with donated booths so the next event can be successful for no other reason than maintaining unity in the community. We are the partnering financial and media sponsors who support the vision and give back to the communities we live, work and play in. We are the non-profits, the for-profits and the community churches who return year after year as vendors, ensuring the LGBT community knows who supports them and their families throughout the year. We are the generations of people, young and old, straight and gay, who march in one parade and celebrate in one park, knowing that producing parties is not activism, but parties with a purpose create a quality of life worth fighting for. Each year, many community members are overwhelmed for the wish of this feeling of Pride to last longer than March. I feel so blessed in working with people who have become a family and I’m here to tell you that

biweekly column from compass in lake worth
Volunteers of Compass in Lake Worth feeling can last all year. Spending time being yourself, giving back, living openly and loving who you want, is both liberating and empowering. Individuals, supportive elected officials and effective organizational leaders are sometimes mistaken for visionaries. Perhaps some would consider them to just be recipients of great luck. In reality, everyone who creates Pride in their communities, are just people. People, with goals and aspirations, strengths and weaknesses, who help create the quality of life we all enjoy in South Florida. They are great by choice and share a commitment and passion for discipline. That’s right, discipline. For without discipline, there would no chance to be creative or do great work.
So through this next year, while entertainers practice dance moves and songwriters of tomorrow hone their gift of voice, please remember this feeling you have right now. To those who came and celebrated, this feeling you have is our one wish for you as a gift to carry with you all year. To my fellow partners in Pride and soldiers of social justice, I salute you. The tents may be packed up, the fence and floats may be torn down, but somewhere out there is a young person, putting their rainbow socks neatly in the bottom of a drawer, just waiting for next year. Feminist Poet Adrienne Rich Dies
S
ANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — Adrienne Rich, a fiercely gifted, award-winning poet whose socially conscious verse influenced a generation of feminist, gay rights and anti-war activists, has died. She was 82. Rich died last week at her Santa Cruz home from complications from rheumatoid arthritis, said her son, Pablo Conrad. She had lived in Santa Cruz since the 1980s. Through her writing, Rich explored topics such as women’s rights, racism, sexuality, economic justice and love between women. Rich published more than a dozen volumes of poetry and five collections of nonfiction. She won a National Book Award for her collection of poems “Diving into the Wreck’’ in 1974, when she read a statement written by herself and fellow nominees Alice Walker and Audre Lorde, “refusing the terms of patriarchal competition and declaring that we will share this prize among us, to be used as best we can for women.’’ According to her publisher, W.W. Norton, her books have sold between 750,000 and 800,000 copies, a high amount for a poet. She gained national prominence with her third poetry collection, “Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law,’’ in 1963. Citing the title poem, University of Maryland professor Rudd Fleming wrote in The Washington Post that Rich “proves poetically how hard it is to be a woman — a member of the second sex.’’ She was, like so many, profoundly changed by the 1960s. Rich married Harvard University economist Alfred Conrad in 1953 and they had three sons. But she left him in 1970 and eventually lived with her partner, writer and editor Michelle Cliff. She used her experiences as a mother to write “Of Woman Born,’’ her groundbreaking feminist critique of pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood, published in 1976. Unlike most American writers, Rich believed art and politics not only could coexist, but must co-exist. She considered herself a socialist because “socialism represents moral value — the dignity and human rights of all citizens,’’ she told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2005. “That is, the resources of a society should be shared and the wealth redistributed as widely as possible.’’

ANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union said last week it has settled a lawsuit with a central Missouri school district whose Internet filtering software was blocking access to nonsexual websites about LGBT issues. The ACLU said the Camdenton R-III School District has agreed to stop blocking the sites, submit to monitoring for 18 months to confirm compliance and pay $125,000 in legal fees and costs. Joshua Block, the staff attorney for the ACLU’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender & AIDS Project, said the Camdenton school board has approved the consent agreement that was filed with the court Wednesday, where it is awaiting a judge’s signature. As part of a national campaign, the ACLU sued the district last summer in federal court in Jefferson City on behalf of organizations whose websites had been blocked. The blocked organizations include the Matthew Shepard Foundation and Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays National, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group. Block said no one want to expose schoolchildren to sexually explicit content. He said the problem was that the Camdenton district used filtering software to block purely educational sites. “Our allegations were never that the school from Day One put this system in place with the premeditated desire to discriminate,’’ Block said. ``But once the censorship was brought to their attention, we allege that they did refuse to fix it because they didn’t want to be sort of accused of making gay websites more available.’’
Republican Ally bolts GOP as Mayoral Race Nears

file in the hotly-contested race with a crowded Republican field, in a city where Democrats hold a clear advantage in voter registration. Fletcher has lagged in recent polls that show a large number of undecided voters. The 35-year-old has broken ranks with Republicans several times since joining the Assembly in 2009 and said he struggled with his party affiliation during his two terms in Sacramento. Fletcher backed Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown’s failed attempt to end a tax break for companies based out of state and was the only Assembly Republican to back a bill to require that gay history be taught in public schools. The Iraq combat veteran gave a passionate speech on the Assembly floor last year to argue that the military should end its policy of prohibiting gays from openly serving.

Settlement Reached in LGBT Web-filtering Case
HILADELPHIA (AP) — A witness in the Philadelphia priest-abuse trial says a priest stalked and undressed him at his Catholic high school before a knock on the door saved him. The 36-year-old man is the first accuser called to testify in the landmark trial of Monsignor William Lynn. Lynn, the former secretary for clergy, is charged with endangering children by helping the church hide abuse complaints. The witness testified Wednesday that the priest first saw him at a gay bookstore in 1991 wearing a Saint John Neumann jacket, and later showed up at the school. A 2005 grand jury report says the archdiocese knew of his complaint and others, and moved the priest six times to new parishes. The report says the priest was removed from ministry in 2003 amid the criminal investigation.
HAWNEE, Okla. (AP) — Activists pushing for the safety and acceptance of LGBT students at conservative universities held a demonstration and met with students and officials last week at Oklahoma Baptist University. Six members of Soulforce’s Equality Ride demonstrated near a chapel at the university before an official asked them to move. They joined the rest of the group of 15 on public property and spoke with students about the Bible and sexuality. The group also contends that anti-gay campus policies encourage suicides by gay students and hate crimes. The activists left a message in chalk on the sidewalk reading, “God loves and affirms lesbian, gay, bi and trans people without reservation.’’ Three activists met with administration officials to encourage the organization of a campus group for LGBT students and their allies. Martin O’Gwynn, associate vice president for university advancement, told The Associated Press the university does not anticipate any policy changes, and he doubts the university would allow a Gay Straight Alliance or a Queer Straight Alliance. He said the private, Christian institution sets “Biblically based standards.’’ The trip was Equality Ride’s the third to Oklahoma Baptist, O’Gwynn said. In 2007, members were arrested for attempting to attend services at a chapel on campus.
Anchorage Equal Rights Supporters Denounce New Ad
A
NCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Proponents of an Anchorage ballot initiative seeking equal protections for gay and transgender residents are slamming a new ad by opponents. The ad by Proposition 5 opponents — Protect Your Rights,Vote No on Prop 5 — says the measure would make it illegal for a day care center to refuse to hire a transvestite. Supporters with One Anchorage, the group behind the initiative, denounced the ad Tuesday at a news conference. Former Gov. Tony Knowles, co-chair of the One Anchorage campaign, says the ad is “intentionally stigmatizing’’ and should be scrapped. The opposition group did not immediately return a call for comment. The measure goes before voters next week. It aims to add sexual orientation or transgender identity to the list of groups protected by the city’s anti-discrimination law.

Maine’s Gay Marriage Group Names Campaign Manager
P
ORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The newly named manager of a campaign seeking to legalize same-sex marriage in Maine said he expects the campaign to spend more than $5 million ahead of November’s election. The Maine Freedom to Marry Coalition announced Tuesday it has created a political action committee called Mainers United for Marriage to spearhead the campaign in favor of a referendum asking voters if they favor legalizing gay marriage. Matt McTighe, who was named campaign manager, expects supporters will have to raise at least $5 million. Gay marriage advocates spent about $5 million in 2009, when residents rejected a statewide gay marriage referendum, he said. McTighe said the campaign will focus on talking to Mainers one-on-one, in person and by phone, to make the case that gay marriage is about giving “loving, committed couples’’ the right to marry, just like heterosexual couples.
South Bend Council Approves Gay Rights Ordinance
S
OUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — South Bend City Council members have approved an ordinance extending employment and housing discrimination protection to gays and lesbians, with supporters saying the move will improve the city’s business prospects. The council’s 6-3 vote last week came after nearly five hours of debate and public testimony about the proposal. The ordinance exempts churches and other religious organizations, but opponents argue it should also exempt individuals and business owners who believe homosexuality is immoral, the South Bend Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/GSet9W). Democratic Mayor Pete Buttigieg told council members he believed the city should join others across the country with similar measures. He said the council’s vote was a test of how well Indiana’s fourthlargest city handles diversity. “In today’s economy and today’s competition for talent — if we fail that test, if we remain outside the American mainstream any longer — South Bend could be typecast as a prejudiced and backward-looking com-
munity and our economic comeback will be that much harder to bring about,’’ Buttigieg said. The South Bend council defeated similar proposals in 2006 and 2010. The council’s action will make it illegal in South Bend to deny people access to education, employment, housing and public places based on their gender identity or sexual orientation, and allow the city’s Human Rights Commission to hear and investigate those types of discrimination claims.
Mich. Lawyer’s Firing Over Anti-Gay Remarks Upheld
L
ANSING, Mich. (AP) — A state hearing officer has upheld the 2010 firing of an assistant attorney general who was accused of harassing the gay student government president at the University of Michigan. William Hutchens of the Michigan Civil Service Commission says Andrew Shirvell was justly dismissed. He says the attorney engaged in “hate speech’’ on a blog and “physical and mental harassment.’’ Shirvell was fired by then-Attorney General Mike Cox in November 2010. He appealed, saying his conduct toward Christopher Armstrong was protected by the First Amendment. But the hearing officer says Shirvell’s actions, even in his off hours, put his office in a bad light and could have discouraged people from working there. Hutchens’ decision is dated March 21. Shirvell’s lawyer says the decision will be appealed.
the university,’’ Blanton said. The issue arose last week when the Gay and Lesbian Services Organization filed a discrimination complaint with the city’s Human Rights Commission. The group alleged that Hands On Originals had submitted a bid to produce T-shirts for the festival but, upon being told it had been selected, refused to fill the order “because we’re a Christian organization.’’

ELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — A farright Serbian leader was convicted and sentenced last week to 10 months in prison for making death threats that led to the cancellation of Belgrade’s 2009 gay pride march. Belgrade’s district court ruled that Mlad-
en Obradovic, the leader of the extremist group Obraz, or Honor, made the threats ahead of the planned march. His group incited discrimination with graffiti that read “Death to gays’’ and “Blood will flow, there will be no gay parade.’’ Lazar Pavlovic, a leader of a Serbian gayrights group, said he is not satisfied with the length of the sentence because such charges should carry prison terms of up to three years in prison. “We expect that the prosecution will lodge an appeal and we will continue to follow this case,’’ he said. Obradovic has been sentenced in a separate case to two years in jail on charges that his group incited violence during a gay pride march in 2010 that left scores of people injured. He is currently a free man while appealing the verdicts.
Ky. School District Puts Hold on Shirt Purchases
T
he Lexington school district has temporarily halted purchases from a local T-shirt company accused of discriminating against the organizers of the city’s gay pride festival and both the city and University of Kentucky are reconsidering whether to use the company in the future. Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton told the Lexington Herald-Leader (http://bit.ly/HgQagv) all purchases will be stopped until the issue between Hands On Originals and the Gay and Lesbian Services Organization is resolved. University spokesman Jay Blanton said Hands on Originals has been one of three vendors for shirts and been paid about $200,000 since July 2011, but whether the school will work with them in the future remains uncertain since the contract expired. “Given the complaint, we are reviewing whether a (request for proposal) should be issued in the future for a third vendor for

Equality Ride Makes Way Around Country Soulforce hopes to open minds one college at a time By Gideon Grudo
S
he wasn’t pleased. The administrators at the Moody Bible Institute were hearing her, but she saw they weren’t listening, nor did they seem to care. “As we asked questions, they refused to answer, but smiled the whole time,” Crystal Cheatham said. “The whole idea of the Bible is to be authentic, and they were completely inauthentic.” Cheatham is a community developer with Soulforce’s 2012 Equality Ride, whose purpose is laid out simply enough on the national event’s site. “We aim to visit the hundreds of schools in the United States that openly discriminate against [the LGBTQA community] through their policies and practices,” the site reads. “On these campuses, LGBTQA students and faculty are forced to suffer in silence.” As community developer, Cheatham helps add cities to the route between those that the “riders” choose, among other duties. Each of the 18 riders on this year’s journey get to pick a school, which the group tries to visit several times in a two or three day stop. Over the span of two months, Equality Ride will hit 12 cities and visit between 15 and 20 schools. The idea is to have a conversation with ad-
12
ministrators and students, and to find out what resources the school does or does not offer to LGBT students on campus. All of the schools that Equality Ride hits are religious. Those schools, Cheatham explained, are the only ones who still have policies against homosexuality. “Most of the problems come from religious concepts. Part of what we do is have deep theological conversation with administrators about why we feel that we, as LGBTQA people, have God’s love,” Cheatham said. ”[Jesus’s] love is given to each of us. No stipulations.” Cheatham said the Equality Ride is an effort to revise the schools’ policies or even add new ones. The organization has succeeded in doing so in eight of the more than 80 schools it’s visited to date. Cheatham believes it’s an important struggle for the LGBT community. “It hurts the LGBT community because religion is the final frontier when it comes to achieving equal rights. People intrinsically believe that being gay is wrong,” she said. “It’s important to have this discussion because there are students who don’t have safety. There’s no policy that will protect them.” Religious schools’ oppression of LGBT students breaks both religious and nationalistic ideals, said Jason Conner, Soulforce’s direc-
tor of programs and co-director of the 2012 Equality Ride. “They were called by Christ to accept everyone,” he said. “And while it’s legal to discriminate, it’s not right. It’s about human life and it’s about human dignity.” To be part of the Equality Ride, hopeful riders had to be apply by September of last year and whoever was chosen began training in January. The training involves Soulforce’s motto and overall mission. That is, to make change through “relentless nonviolent resistance,” according to their site. The first week of training was in Miami, but the Ride won’t be stopping in South Florida this year. Conner explained that before taking off, the group contacts a long list of schools. Of those who bite and accept the riders to come visit and talk, a map is made to create the most efficient round trip. That’s where people like Cheatham come in. This year’s cities include Philadelphia; Atlanta; Nashville, Tenn.; Chicago; Minneapolis; Oklahoma City; New Orleans; Dallas; Denver; Salt Lake City; Portland, Ore.; and San Francisco. Of those schools that do not wish to have a conversation, the riders will sometimes stage non-violent protests. This year, with the
schools that complied, a stop in South Florida was a bit unrealistic, Conner said, but emphasized that Soulforce will be holding a few educational symposiums in the region later in the year. But they have visited South Florida in the past Most notably in 2008 when they traveled to Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA), a religious school in West Palm Beach, with more than 3,200 students. Administrators at PBA first refused to meet with the riders, but later agreed under staunch conditions. The Equality Ride did not accept the restrictions that would have been placed on them, so they refused and attempted to attend a worship service. Officials at PBA warned them that if they came onto the property they would call the police. Six of them did so anyway and were arrested. Before ever joining Soulforce, Cheatham was raised in church, and was groomed to one day become a church leader, on the basis of her singing talent. But when she came out, her grooming was put on hold and told her progress would be halted because of her sexual orientation. She would quickly find herself working on independent projects for the sake of the LGBT community and eventually founded Soulforce. Conner, who joined the organization in 2006 (after a pact to come out to his family if his application was accepted, which it was), sees the work that they do as a way to keep similar stories from happening. It all boils down to the schooling, he said. These students are the future of this country, and one day they will be anything from political leaders to church leaders. By getting through to them now, Conner hopes, Soulforce is getting the country to a brighter future. For more information and a schedule of Equality Ride’s upcoming stops, go to www.soulforce.org.

Daniel Zamudio: Chile’s Matthew Shepard By Federico Quilodran Associated Press
S
ANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Prosecutors in Chile asked for murder charges Wednesday in the death of a young gay man whose attackers brutally beat him and carved swastikas into his body. Daniel Zamudio died Tuesday night, 25 days after he was attacked. The case has prompted a national debate in Chile over hate crimes, with President Sebastian Pinera saying from Asia that his government won’t rest until a proposed anti-discrimination law is passed. Four suspects have been jailed on attempted murder charges, some of whom already have criminal records for attacks on gays. Hours after Zamudio’s death, prosecutor Ernesto Vazquez formally requested that the charges be changed to premeditated murder, carrying maximum life sentences if convicted. He said the attack was clearly motivated by homophobia. Gay activists weren’t satisfied. The leader of Chile’s Gay Liberation and Integration Movement, Rolando Jimenez, said the suspects should be charged with torture as well. Zamudio, a clothing store salesman, was attacked in a park in Santiago on March 3. The suspects allegedly beat him for an hour, burning him with cigarettes and carving Nazi symbols into his body. The second of four brothers, he had hoped to study theater, his brother Diego said. “He was very loving, an excellent person and that’s

why it’s so hard to believe that they attacked him with such hate,’’ he told reporters. Hundreds of people had been holding vigil outside the hospital where Zamudio lay braindead, building a shrine on the sidewalk. Many whistled and booed when Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter, the acting president while Sebastian Pinera is traveling in Asia, arrived to share condolences Tuesday night. The commotion ended only when Zamudio’s father appealed for them to maintain respect. “We are going to work tirelessly in our Congress to pass our anti-discrimination law as quickly as possible,’’ Hinzpeter said to reporters outside the hospital after visiting the family Tuesday night. An ample Senate majority passed the law in November, but seven years after it was first proposed, it has yet to come to a vote in the lower house. Lobbyists for evangelical churches said it would be a first step toward gay marriage, which Chile forbids and which is not explicitly included in the measure. It would describe as illegal discrimination “any distinction, exclusion or restriction that lacks reasonable justification, committed by agents of the state or individuals, and that causes the deprivation, disturbance or threatens the legitimate exercise of fundamental rights established by the constitution or in international human rights treaties ratified by Chile.’’ Attorney Gabriel Zaliasnik told the Cooperativa radio station Wednesday that if the

Pinera tweeted from South Korea that the “brutal and cowardly attack of Daniel Zamudio wounds not only his family but all people of good will.’’ “His death will not remain unpunished, and reinforces the complete commitment of the government against all arbitrary discrimination and for a more tolerant country.’’ The jailed suspects are Raul Alfonso Lo-
pez, 25; Alejandro Axel Angulo Tapia, 26; Patricio Ahumada Garay, 25; and Fabian Mora Mora, 19. They remain in preventive detention after blaming others in the group for the attack. Lopez allegedly told police that he saw Angulo and Ahumada carve three swastikas into Zamudio with a broken pisco sour bottle. Ahumada’s public defender, Nestor Perez, said his client wasn’t involved in the attack and isn’t a neo-Nazi.

SFGN Editorial

Ports of Hate Don’t Deserve Your Dollar Norm Kent, Publisher
T
he debate over last week’s editorial went viral, and few stories we have ever published have drawn more of a response. First, two men, one a retired police officer, were caught having sex on the balcony of their room on an Atlantis Events cruise ship while in port in Dominica. Second, the two men were removed the cruise ship, jailed, and then charged with buggery. After a day in jail, their charges were reduced; they paid a fine, and were released. Third, I wrote an editorial last week calling for gay men of conscience to conscientiously boycott Atlantis Cruises. As the debate crystallized, in print, online, and in bars, dozens of callers and letterwriters expressed their viewpoint, not only on our site, but also at Queerty.com. Last week, the editorial was carefully worded to state that sex does not belong in public places. It was clearly negligent for those men to have sex in open view on a cruise ship in a foreign country. But the point of the editorial, was not then, and is not now, about their grossly careless acts. I stand behind my editorial on the principle that the LGBT community has no business supporting a cruise ship cartel that carries its gay passengers to homophobic ports of call. We don’t see Jewish tour groups heading to Iran to read the Koran. So get over the fact that these two guys had sex in a wrong place. The story is not about them or what they did. The editorial is about the American gay community, enriched with political power and economic force. The story is about us mattering, as people, and counting as citizens of the world. The story is about us being equal and an important part of our country, not apart from it. If you are a freedom fighter, the love you fight for, should be as equal and acceptable in Kentucky as in Kenya. Sadly, the love you live and the life you lead is prosecuted and persecuted in Dominican islands and ports of call where these cruise ships make money; empowered to do so by gay men and women giving them our money. To boot, we not only enhance the stature of the cruise ships financially, we enrich the homophobic communities with our LGBT dollars. Looking to lynch me? Here, let me help find a rope and show you how to tie a knot. The Nazis had really good bakeries in Ger-
18
many 70 years ago. But I am guessing homosexuals in drag did not openly patronize their cafes. How you spend your money is your choice, but it is not sensible to give it to countries and communities where the people hate who you are and what you do. In 2011, this newspaper gave its ‘Person of the Year’ Award to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Amongst other things, it was because she went to an international human rights convention in Geneva, and devoted her entire talk to advocating equal rights for LGBT communities around the world. She called for acceptance and equality everywhere from Uganda to Mississippi. If we embrace our freedom, it should be more than with a Lake Worth city ordinance protecting domestic partners. It should not only be in our own community, but also on every continent. The world is now but a tweet away. Refuse to isolate yourself. Partner with friends across the pond and gay prisoners in Jamaica. Lend your voice to freedom for LGBT people everywhere. If your secretary of state can, so can you. The next time you think of going on a cruise, review its itinerary and course. Let the cartels running the ships know that you will not secure a reservation for a business enterprise that is willing to enhance the financial wherewithal of countries that discriminate against homosexuals. In the workplace, the gay community in America has helped further a world where our corporations embrace diversity, cultivate a social conscience, and offer benefits commensurate to gay men and women that are already offered to straight employees. At play, on cruise ships sailing around the world, we can correspondingly demand that the ports of call we visit are not harbingers of hate, and that has nothing at all to do with two guys getting it on aboard a ship. It has to do with whether we want to hold our heads up with pride, or shame ourselves buying cheap trinkets and getting a good tan in a land that hates who we are and what we do. Keep your pride, and stay off those boats. Let the world know that the LGBT community is about pride and professionalism, passion and caring, humanity and worldwide concern- and that we will not use our dollars to enrich those lands and countries that don’t accept us. It’s their loss, not ours.
Guest Rebuttal Column By Malcolm Neitzey Cruise Director, Atlantis Events
A
fter reading your article and proposed boycott off Atlantis Events, I would like clarify a few points.
On a recent cruise to the Caribbean, two of our guests had public sex on their stateroom balcony 100 yards from shore in full view of fellow guests and citizens of the town. It was 9 am and many people were on their way to work or vendors waiting for guest to arrive. Pictures and video were taken of their actions. Public sex is illegal in every country gay or straight. Local police came on board, interviewed the men with Celebrity and Atlantis representatives present. The same way a US Coast Guard ship can board any ship in US waters, any country can board any ship in their waters. Dominica had Jurisdiction. Cruise ships are not embassies. They were taken in to the local jail accompanied by Atlantis and Celebrity representatives. While yes they could have been charged with a serious crime, the sentence was reduced to indecent exposure. This was due in large part to Celebrity and Atlantis contacting the Local Embassy in Barbados, a Congresswoman as well as the Celebrity main office in Miami. They were fined and released the next day and flew to San Juan. From that point on they claimed they never had sex, were arrested and taken off the ship because they were gay. I am here to tell you, they were having sex, there are pictures. If they were arrested solely because they were gay, why did the police come on board to get them when there were plenty of other gay guests
in town they could have easily arrested. I have no doubt their experience was scary and spending the night in a Dominican Jail was very unpleasant. However, they claim they did nothing wrong and no one helped them, this is untrue. The story is simple. Two people had public sex, were caught, arrested, charged, then sent home. If two people, gay or straight were seen having sex in Disneyworld in front of the guests they too would be arrested and most likely yelled at by people who saw it. Now, why did we go to Dominica, it a beautiful island. A poll taken by the national paper just after the incident showed 71% of Dominicans were in favor of Gay Tourism. Yes they have some antiquated laws on their books but they apply to straight people too. We have been to several countries that may not be the most gay friendly, Egypt, Russia and Tunisia for example. We have had no problems there because everyone respected local customs, saw the sights and went home. Sometimes visiting a country can change that country. The Cayman Islands in 1998 barred Atlantis from coming to their country. In 2008 we went back. There was a small protest, but also many people welcoming us. The following year, there were rainbow flags in the shops welcoming us. No protests. Moral of the story, respect local customs and rights when visiting a country and you just may change minds. Have sex in public in that country and you’ve just set back gay rights back to the 60’s. Atlantis is an amazing vacation experience, over 100,000 gay, lesbian, transgender and straight guests will attest to that.

corruption, Atlantis needs to get its act together, I find their response to the matter alarming and unacceptable. Once they start losing money they will change their ways.
A witness’ snapshot of the controversial act
Jeff: I must offer my thoughts on your editorial in the March 28 issue of SFGN. By way of business as well as personal travel, I have had the opportunity to visit 14 countries on 3 continents as well as at least a dozen islands in the Caribbean. The first lesson I learned many years ago was that I am a GUEST in another country and should conduct myself accordingly. I have been to some places gay friendly, and many more not so. I never found myself arrested, fined or imprisoned because I respected local laws and/or customs. Yes, I visited gay bars and clubs... but I did not have sex on the balcony of my hotel or cruise ship in even the most gay friendly locale. For you to trivialize this act and instead lay the blame squarely on the government of Dominica is ridiculous. Having sex in public, whether gay or straight, when it can be witnessed by others, especially (but not limited to) children is completely unacceptable. I fully understand that SFGN is a gay newspaper with a primarily gay readership. In fact, I have been a faithful reader from the first issue and am also a long time advertiser. However, you are playing the “gay card” here. I am reminded of an incident that occurred at my Oakland Park condo a few years back when I was president of the board. I received a complaint and in turn wrote a letter to a couple of male residents who were lying on top of each other on a chaise at the pool, humping each other. Their response was, “it’s because we’re gay.” No, it’s not. This is not acceptable behavior, gay or straight, in a family community. Where I do agree with you is in the opinion that Atlantis, a gay cruise company, should do it’s best to avoid blatantly homophobic islands. Then again, that would eliminate all but a small handful. However, your suggestion that the cruise ship company should defend the “rights”
of these passengers is no more valid than suggesting the cruise ship company defend the “rights” of those on last year’s cruise who were arrested for dealing drugs. It was unfortunate indeed for Hart and Mayer to have been treated harshly, but it is perhaps a learning experience for them and everyone else. Stewart: First and foremost what were the guys thinking doing whatever they were doing on the balcony in port? Come on show some adult responsibility and remember whatever your sexual orientation is you are governed by the laws of the country you are in and it is up to responsible adults to know about the laws, don’t expect someone else to tell you. Get caught doing it in public in the US and you would end up on the “sex offenders” list for life. Don’t try to blame someone else for your own stupidity. Steve: I totally agree with you Norm, Atlantis has an obligation to plan trips to places that are gay friendly, if they can’t understand that then I say don’t support them. Is Atlantis even gay owned anymore? Who is the CEO and who sits on their board? I say we bombard them with the message that until they stop going to these 3rd world hell holes, we are not going to cruise with them. Given the things I have seen on the gay cruises I went on a few years ago, I’m surprised they didn’t arrest half the guys on the ship. Drugs, sex parties, it can get down and dirty on those things and if they are watching the balconies and windows from shore then who would be safe? We were planning a cruise in October, we have cancelled it, I’m not going to risk being held captive, killed or tortured just to go on a cruise. I’d rather go on the Alaska cruise anyway, the islands are just a sess pool of

Mark: I agree with Norm Kent. I would not spend my money in homophobic countries nor on cruises that go to them. Gay cruises have a responsibility to avoid them.Yes, the passengers got frisky in an inappropriate place, but the punishment was way overboard, no pun intended. Locked up abroad is terrifying. And the owner’s flippant attitude of what his passengers went through is disappointing. Marvin: Norm - right on! There’s one point I’d like to elaborate on. They were not charged with buggery, only indecent exposure. The people on the dock who supposedly saw them “in the act” have not surfaced. There is no proof that they were having sex on their balcony. No matter what - the shame is not on these guys, but on Atlantis for going to Dominica and not protecting their guests and on Celebrity who literally kicked them off the ship, telling them that they could face up to 14 years in jail. Justin: “Why the hell is a cruise ship company catering to the LGBT community running cruises to islands that openly and brazenly discriminate against gay populations?” Because Rich Campbell is making piles of money off of it. I’ve had many personal interactions with him and he always thinks the passenger is wrong. No matter what, Rich will continue to pursue the almighty dollar to fund his extravagant party lifestyle. Johnny: I agree with Norm Kent. What are we doing putting money into the economy of homophobic places such as those islands in the first place? I refuse to pay them to promote homophobia. I won’t be giving my business to Atlantis or RSVP until they wise up. Matthew: I politely disagree with boycotting the ship or Atlantis. I’ve been on both Atlantis and RSVP vacations and had a blast. I’ve known when it was good idea or not to get frisky on the balcony. The best time is when the ship is at sea. Calling for a boycott over something that could have been 100% prevented is not the answer.
Letter to the Editor
Fort Lauderdale Coming Around to Raise the Rainbow Flag with Pride By Michael Emanuel Rajner, BSW
O
n Tuesday, Feb. 21, the South Florida Gay News ran my letter to the editor “Commissioner Rodstrom, Pick up the Flag and Carry it with Pride!” The letter created critical dialogue that identifies issues of public policy on which the Fort Lauderdale City Commission must act. Last week, I attended the city commission meeting to speak about an agenda item concerning vendor preference. The proposed item contained no provisions Michael Rajner to address inequities many LGBT-individuals face in the workplace. I requested that the commission amend the proposed ordinance to include an Equal Benefits Ordinance (EBO), similar to the one adopted last year by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. An EBO would require vendors with contracts of $100,000 and over to extend health coverage to the domestic partner of a vendor’s employee should the vendor provide such coverage for an employee’s married spouse. If the vendor does not provide the coverage, then it must provide financial compensation (equal to the amount of the cost of the health coverage) to the employee with a domestic partner.Vendors with less than 5 employees, religious organizations, and contracts with other government entities are exempt pursuant to a current county ordinance. I also urged the city commission to adopt an LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination policy. Currently, Fort Lauderdale has no policy on non-discrimination, and by default adheres to the federal and state statutes whereby sexual orientation and gender identity are not included. I additionally requested the agenda item be amended to require vendors doing business with the city to adopt the same, or a more expansive, policy on non-discrimination. When Commissioner Rodstrom asked why such requirements were not part of the ordinance before them, the city attorney explained that the public hearing for the ordinance, as amended, would need to be re-advertised. Sadly, once again the LGBT-community is waiting for the city commission to vote affirmatively on policies providing parity and equity in the workplace. The commission then approved the vendor ordinance without the requested amendments. On the upside, the majority of the commission signaled that they would be supportive of these policies if they were to come before the commission again, and Mayor Seiler suggested that the city charter be revised to include non-discrimination language. Commissioner Roberts later gave his commitment as an LGBT-advocate to bring forward an ordinance to establish an LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination policy that includes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes and which requires vendors to adopt this minimum standard. As a community, we are often absent from City Hall and other places where public policies that impact our lives is being debated. If we are to be an authentic, more inclusive society, then we must make the effort to immerse ourselves in the dialogue and debates that impact our lives. I’m pleased that the Fort Lauderdale mayor and commission vocally support the advancement of these ordinances. The have begun to unfold the rainbow flag and preparing at City Hall to hoist the flag with pride. submitted photo

Tennessean Neligan. Shaw has been seen on Comedy Central, her own Logo TV special, and is a favorite entertainer on Olivia Cruises. A mother and grandmother, Shaw is quick to boast, “I’m from Texas, where the speed limit is a suggestion.” Neligan, the newest “Queen,” was formerly a writer for the CMT network and likes to tell stories about growing up gay in a traditional Irish family in the deep South. She’s also been known to include a couple musical selections on her banjo because, “I’m from Nashville. It’s the law!” A Yankee who grew up in Rhode Island, Champlin knew she would stick out like a sore thumb on a southern tour. “It not that Florida IS the South, but it kinda is below the South, so I’m bringing my friends. You don’t want to bring too many Yankees and get people nervous,” she says. But Champlin is not just a Yankee, she also claims to be a Pilgrim—a direct descendent of Richard Warren, who made the famous journey aboard the Mayflower—and isn’t afraid to point out just how gay they really were. “They landed in Provincetown, after all,” she jokes. “And look at those outfits, it’s like ‘Queer Eye for the Colonial Guy’. I think they wore all that black because it is slimming.” Champlin is particularly excited about her new relationship with HRC: “We’re

fighting for our rights and laughing at the same time. I especially enjoy that component of the show.” Times have certainly changed, the comedian points out. When she first took the stage in 1982, gay comics—and lesbians, in particular—were trailblazers. Gay-friendly venues were far and few between and audiences didn’t know how to react. “They were rude, misbehaved, shouted things out and you had to deal with it over and over,” she recalls. While Champlin watched many gay male and straight female comics wither under the assault, audiences soon learned not to mess with funny lesbians. “We’re tough,” she insists, but in the end, the jokes rule. Hep C: The New Epidemic By David Webb
A
fter the emergence of HIV and the devastation it caused in the 1980s, the identification of yet another deadly virus about the same time went virtually unnoticed by the general public. News and concern about Hepatitis C understandably took a back seat to HIV, and so the liver disease apparently grew exponentially because it was a slower killer and asymptomatic. Spread mostly by blood-to-blood contact, HCV is now thought to infect as many as 170 million people worldwide, many or most of whom are unaware of their status because of the absence of any symptoms they are ill. Often people do not become aware of their infection until significant damage is done to their liver, cirrhosis or cancer develops and a transplant is necessary. Now, more people die from HCV-related illnesses than those associated with HIV, according to Center for Disease Control officials. CDC officials warn that Baby Boomers, anyone born between 1945 and 1965, should get
a test to determine if they are infected with HCV. Federal health officials estimate that two-thirds of the people infected with HCV are in this age group, and that half are unaware of it. Medical researchers and practitioners theorized since the 1970s that another hepatitis virus existed in addition to Hepatitis B because some patients who no longer exhibited traces of HBV in their blood continued to show similar signs of liver malfunction. Finally, in 1989 Hepatitis C was proven to exist, and widespread testing of blood for the virus since 1997 has revealed its frightening spread. Many people in the LGBT community were unaware of the existence of HCV and only learned about if someone they knew was diagnosed with it or, God forbid, learned they themselves had contracted it. After missing the HIV bullet and vowing not to place themselves at risk of contracting it, many people no doubt were shocked to learn there was yet another virus they could have contracted

They both abandoned the treatments. Two people whom I have known were HCVFortunately, other people managed to survive the treatments and the combination of drugs apparently eliminated HCV from their blood. The very fortunate discovered the infections and received the treatments before irreversible damage was done to their livers as was indicated by biopsies. At the time the two people I knew tried the available treatments it was when only a combination of pegylated Interferon and Ribavirin was available. Those treatments initially were prohibitively expensive, but they are considered less costly now. Today, there are new protease inhibitors available for treatment showing promise, but the cost is astronomical. The new drugs, Victrelis, at $1,100 per week, and Incivek at $4,100 per week, must be taken for months, and they also can cause hideous side effects. It’s an agonizing situation, but most people are willing to spend whatever it costs if they can and endure whatever pain comes along in an effort to survive. That’s why it’s so important to get tested for HCV and to determine whether treatment is needed before it’s too late. For others who are uninfected, don’t go there in the first place. Know how HCV is spread and avoid any possibility that it can imperil your life. Queer Speak 21st Century Quotes on Gay Rights
Pat Robertson

“The world today says ‘OK, so you are gay, you want to have affairs with men -- that’s cool. You have an absolute right to do that, why not?’ “That’s not the right attitude. The attitude is that this is sin. It’s wrong. And [this man] realized it was wrong but couldn’t control it. But that type of conduct is wrong… he is obsessed. He has a compulsion. I would think that it is somehow related to demonic possession…” -- Pat Robertson on why a man “trolled the streets” for seven years looking for “cheap sex with other men” while his wife sat at home “completely clueless.”

App Developers Cashing in on the LGBT Community A guide to LGBT friendly apps and their myriad of uses
By Charles Pratt Introduction:
F
inding it hard…no pun intended… to find a date these days? Well it’s time to move into the new age of mobile dating. Just as digital dating sites like America Online 15 years ago revolutionized the way gays meet, date and hook up, mobile dating is doing it again. America Online introduced us chat rooms; sites like Manhunt and Adam4Adam introduced us to cruising online; now apps are once again changing the way we meet, date and hook up. SFGN decided to highlight some of the most popular, most obscure and most recent apps to pop up.
Grindr:

f you’re a gay guy with a smartphone and you haven’t heard of the ever so popular Grindr you’ve been living under a rock in Afghanistan. But for those technologically challenged here’s a quick overview. It’s a free app available on Android, Blackberry, and the iPhone and has 3 million users worldwide. All versions of Grindr allow for a seamless transition that allows you to have the same profile on multiple devices such as an iPhone and iPad. For $2.99 a month you can purchase Grindr Xtra, which allows you to view up to 200 guys at a time, removes ads and allows for push notifications. Be careful though on what you post. Grindr recently fell victim to a major cyber attack, which took advantage of flaws in the mobile app’s security. The hacker used those flaws to access the service’s user accounts, and posted account information online. The attack mostly targeted Australian users. It was reported that apparently the hacker spoofed several accounts in Sydney, Australia and sent messages and changed profile photos to graphic images without the real user’s knowledge. ll of the apps listed in this spread are all about finding guys. Spartacus, however, is an app for the iPhone, that helps gays search for bars, clubs, saunas, and hotels in 2,580 cities and 143 countries. Spartacus also allows a user to “mood search” which includes the most suitable places to dance, drink, eat, meet, sleep, shop and even to have sex. A subscription costs $14.99 for the world, and $8.99 for America, Africa, Asia and Oceania for a year. The app also features articles by the editors on the local political situation of the LGBT community as well as local sights, other highlights and a global event calendar listing Pride events around the world.
Visit SpartacusWorld.com for more information.
GuySpy:
I
f Grindr is too mainstream for you, check out GuySpy which is a free app on Android, and iPhone, and also has a web-based interface. Members are displayed on a grid similar to Grindr but also offers a map on the iPhone and Android. Voice and video messages can be sent in chat as well. Their tagline is “Anytime, Anywhere and Any Way.” In addition to the app they have a fairly expansive blog that ranges from interviews with porn starts to political activists. The app was also featured in the 2011 movie Judas Kiss. There’s also a premium version, GuySpy+, which gives users access to more features including travel mode and HD video messaging. The up-

ack’d is a free app for the iPhone and Android. It offers push notifications, a match finder, and multiple profile pictures along with unlimited message exchanges. Unfortunately Jack’d is notably buggy with one Android user saying, “I LOVE this app, its way better than Grindr and Adam4adam but the new updates are dumb to me. I can’t use my auto-correct when I’m typing messages (very dumb!) And my radius got smaller (dumber!) Please fix this and once again this app will be my favorite :).” Visit Jackd.mobi for more information.
Hornet:
G
rindr watch out. So far few apps have been able to put a dent into Grindr’s market share of gay dating and hook up apps, but this is one to watch for. Hornet may be just the one to finally challenge Grindr. It’s a free app for the iPhone and Android. It allows users to upload multiple private and public photos. Another neat feature is the notes feature, which allows a user to keep track of information about the guys you’ve talked with. It includes an explore feature which allows a user to find guys in other areas that they may be traveling to. One iPhone user stated “Hands down better than Grindr. No annoying ads, fast photo approval and friendly customer service.” They also offer a stealth mode. Another feature they’ve incorporated into their app is “Know your Status” (KYS). In their profile, posi-
tive or recently tested guys will get a special marker, so that users are prompted to enroll in a voluntary campaign for a safer environment. Once a test comes up for renewal, Hornet will remind users to get tested again, or their KYS status lapses to unknown. Other features include stealth mode, forwarding profiles and extensive filters so you can focus on what you do want to see. Visit GetHornet.com for more information.
Scruff:
L
ooking for a man’s man? Well look no further, Scruff is the app for you. It’s free on both the iPhone and Android. The app is targeted towards the more rough and tumble guys. In an interview with FrontiersLA co-founder Johnny Scruff stated, “The guys on SCRUFF are definitely what sets us apart! All kinds of guys use SCRUFF—servicemen, firefighters, jocks, bears and lots of everyday guys. We have an inclusive community that welcomes all kinds. On that note, I love that we have famous drag queens on SCRUFF!” Scruff allows for a user to purchase messaging pro for $4.99 and browsing pro for $3.99. Credits can also be purchased which allow users to send and store hi-res photos. Visit ScruffApp.com for more information.
Daddyhunt:
I
f the Scruff men are too young for you then perhaps Daddyhunt is the app for you. As the name suggests it’s for older gay men and the guys who love them. There’s a website and their app version on Android and iPhone is called Mister. Among the features in the app a user can “man grind” and “grope” fellow users. Daddyhunt operates a blog called Age Appropriate that covers a gambit of topics including dating, health and politics. Mister allows for up to 10 profile pictures and offers free push notifications.

It also allows users the opportunity to choose to display their location on a geographical map, which means it’s easier to meet up in real time.”
Squirt:

hile some of the other apps may pretend to be “dating” apps Squirt. org has no such identity crisis. It’s for hooking up, plain and simple. Their tagline says it all – “Gay Sex Cruising Hook Up Site.” But sorry guys there’s no app as of yet. The website offers access to popular cruising locations and multiple ways to find men. There’s a free basic membership and a premium membership where members can view unlimited cruising listings, pictures, print out directions to the location and comment about the location. It also allows members to upload videos. Visit Squirt.org for more information.
f you’re still having trouble finding a date, or maybe just want a night with no hang-ups, there’s always Rentboy, a web based escort service. The website allows for searching by city, specific sexual position, cock size and even obscure fetishes like sneakers, PnP and diapers. The website is free to browse for customers. Escorts and massage therapists, however, have to pay. Rentboy also has adult toy store and pay-per-view porn. Creators Jeff Davids and Sean Van Sant created the International Escort Awards known as “The Hookies.” The website though is most notable for its controversy involving the case of anti-gay activist George Rekers who hired a man from Rentboy for a ten-day trip to Europe as a “travel assistant.”

our gay men in their forties and sixties, from the U.S. and France, sang in our living room with Kermit the Frog, “Someday we’ll find it, the Rainbow Connection, the lovers, the dreamers, and me.” Jean-Marc and Patrice had watched the Muppets as children 30 years ago in eastern and southern France. As they sat with Ray and me, with bowls of homemade popcorn, they excitedly named the characters as they appeared in the film, The Muppets: Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Animal, and Swedish Chef. Ray and I were delighted to share that experience which transcended language and culture. Patrice, being a song and dance man, knew all of the lyrics to Kermit’s closing song: “I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it. There’s something that I’m supposed to be. Someday we’ll find it, the Rainbow Connection, the lovers, the dreamers, and me.” That morning, Patrice was horrified to learn that a gunman had killed Jewish children near the town in which he had watched Sesame Street. to have found The Rainbow Connection. None of us have the ability to avoid the harsh realities of life that exist outside of a children’s television program or film. Almost everywhere we look, and almost everything we hear in the media, creates in us the feeling that we are not safe. That is why we are made nervous by the presence at work of someone who is different. Ignorance is the parent of fear. Fear is the parent of hatred. We constantly are called upon to fight off the instinct to fear, and to hate. And more of us succeed than don’t. Given all of the challenges we each face daily to be open to new interactions with people who are different from us, I feel that most people throughout the world do a pretty good job of seeing The Rainbow Connection. We have our moments when we want to lash out and punish the people who frighten us, but we’re held back by our memories of bears, pigs, frogs, chickens and other assorted characters loving each other, and being happy. “The lovers, the dreamers, and me.” We live and work everywhere. Brian McNaught was named “the godfather of gay diversity training” by The New York Times. He works with corporate executives globally, is the author of six books, and is featured in seven educational DVDs. He and his spouse Ray Struble divide their year between Fort Lauderdale and Provincetown. Visit Brian-McNaught.com for more information.
