he Gay and Lesbian Lawyers Network held their first fundraiser last weekend and more than 150 people attended. They raised almost $5,000, which will be used to benefit The Pride Center in Wilton Manors and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. “The event was sold out, in fact we were oversold and it was a complete success,” said President of GLLN, Lea Krauss. “A number of local judges, elected officials and candidates were in attendance. In addition, Rhode Island Congressman, David Cicilline attended.” Mayor of Wilton Manors, Gary Resnick issued a proclamation that April 29, 2012 be named Lea Paige Krauss Day. Krauss called it “unbelievable honor.” Local broadcaster on Channel 10 Ross Palombo served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. “All and all the event exceeded our wildest imagination and the entire GLLN board of directors thanks all of the sponsors, volunteers and attendees for making the event a success,” Krauss said.

t’s being reported that Calvin Klein’s exboyfriend Nick Gruber has left town and entered rehab. According to the New York Daily News the word is Klein is paying for Gruber’s stay at an undisclosed rehab in Arizona. This is after Gruber was arrested last week for hiding cocaine in his undies. Gruber split from the 69-year-old fashion mogul in January. According to the Daily News Gruber was about to move to California to pursue a career in reality television but was arrested the day before for punching Calvin Swint, who appears to be an intern for New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg. The police later found a stash of what appeared to be cocaine in Gruber’s underwear. Gruber is a former underwear model, but Gawker, has apparently dug up some dirt linking him to gay porn under the name Aaron Skyline. Klein is no stranger to rehab as he also underwent his own stint in 1988.

Nick Gruber (L) and Calvin Klein (R) Gruber faces 3 criminal charges, which includes assault, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance.

ine same-gendered couples’ marriages were blessed in a ceremony at Fort Lauderdale’s All Saints Episcopal Church, 333 Tarpon Drive. In 2009 the Episcopal Church’s General Convention authorized Episcopal Bishops to choose whether to allow the blessing of same-gendered marriages within their Dioceses. The Bishop of Southeast Florida, Leo Frade, petitioned by the Rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, agreed to allow the blessing ceremony to take place. The nine couples, who were legally married in California, Canada, Connecticut, New York and the District of Columbia, have been in committed relationships anywhere from 10 to 43 years. The sanctuary was filled with more than 350 people – parishioners, friends and family of the couples, who celebrated the unions with a specific blessing for each of the couples. “We have walked a very long road to get to this moment,” said the Rev Sherod Mallow, Rector of All Saints. “We have worked and struggled for years to bring us to the place where true diversity and the celebration of the committed relationships of all our parishioners are embraced as part of God’s larger plan for his people. New Divine Mercy By Justin Wyse

re you looking for a new beginning? Have you lost your Faith due to others telling you that you’re not welcome because of who you are? Well God works in mysterious ways and just over 8 years ago he brought Father John Joseph Reid and Father Lawrence Turner to Wilton Manors. The New Divine Mercy Church was established to welcome everyone — gay or straight — to a place for Spiritual healing, meditation and Catholic based services. They began this journey together to bring the word of God to the LGBT community of South Florida. Even though New Divine Mercy is Catholic based in traditions they have no allegiance to either the Roman or Greek Orthodox ministries. Father John Joseph is a firm believer that God loves everyone and creates no mistakes during his creation. This belief allows for a safe environment for the LGBT community to worship. While providing dedicated weekly services to all brothers and sisters in Christ, New Divine Mercy also provides a Spiritual environment for all those in times of need.

Recently the church has been given the opportunity to hold Sunday Mass at Kalas McIntee Center of Wilton Manors. Other services are held on Tuesday & Thursday (Tuesday services: spiritual healing and meditation and Thursday services: geared towards the recovery community or those in need.) Additional services offered: holy unions, baptisms for kids of gay parents and all other traditional services. Sunday: 10:30am I 2505 N. SAVE Dade Honors LGBT Advocates Champions of Equality awards ceremony to take place May 11

etting an example means doing the right thing — but it sure helps when someone recognizes the effort. That’s exactly what SAVE Dade will be doing at its upcoming Champions of Equality awards ceremony. The night will be devoted to paying homage to people who’ve had a positive effect on the LGBT community in South Florida. On May 11, the public is invited to attend the cocktail reception, silent auction and showcase. The 19-year-old organization, devoted to protecting LGBT people against discrimination, will award a senator and a law firm for their advocacy. The event will also highlight six advocates who will be inducted into SAVE Dade’s Hall of Champions. “We have to reward elected officials just like when we remind our community when somebody acts against the LGBT community, voting against freedoms or against a pro-LGBT initiative,” said CJ Artuno, SAVE Dade’s executive director. “That doesn’t mean that the folks who do good things will always do good things, but we have to recognize them when they do good deeds.” The idea is that other politicians will see that working on behalf of the LGBT community is not a political risk, according to Artuno. This way, SAVE Dade is not only supporting the community but awarding those who do. “I think the event, fundamentally, also serves as a way to highlight what good behavior is like, what types of actions and initiatives that ultimately support the equality movement,” he said. “For us it literally is recognizing our good guys, the folks who are on our side, and in an interesting way shaming those who think that LGBT Americans shouldn’t have equal rights.” The honorees this year are Senator Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and law firm White and Case. The two are partly responsible for getting rid of the ban on LGBT people serving openly in the military. Otherwise known as Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

(DADT), the ban forbade LGBT service men and women from disclosing their sexual orientation or discussing it while in service. According to SAVE Dade, more than 13,000 service people were discharged for violating this ban. Nelson’s vote against the ban helped end it in December 2010. For-profit law firm White and Case was at the time defending service people pro-bono. The firm’s main client was the Log Cabin Republicans, a national LGBT Republicans grassroots organization. The LCR argued that the government had to defend itself on the ban and why it was of any importance to intrude on and violate the privacy of LGBT service people. The second part of the award ceremony will be inducting six people into SAVE Dade’s Hall of Champions. According to a SAVE Dade spokesperson, this hall was implemented in 2011 as an effort to honor long-term volunteers that have done a lot for Miami Dade. Elizabeth Schwartz is one of the six. She’s been practicing law in South Florida for 15 years, a lot of work benefiting the LGBT

community. The local and national lecturer has worked pro-bono to end Florida’s ban of LGBT couples adopting children, and serves on several boards in the area, including Miami Beach’s Bar Association, where she’s President-Elect, and the city’s Human Rights Committee. Richard Milstein and Eric Hankin are also being inducted into the hall. The two activists have proven themselves with their work for the LGBT community. From working with AIDS victims and developing the Pride Seder (and its Haggadah) to fighting for the passage of the Human Rights Ordinance and domestic partnership protections, the two have aided South Florida’s LGBT in more ways than can be counted. Next is Joan Schaeffer, the first woman to serve on the board of the Dade Human Rights Foundation. She’s served on several other pro-LGBT boards and played a part in starting Project YES from the YES institute. She’s a founding member of Ru’ach, the LGBT community at Temple Israel, where she’s Vice President for Administration and Vice Chair of the Social Justice Committee. Finally are Mark Steinberg and Dennis Edwards, who met in the 80s while being volunteers for the Health Crisis Network (today’s CARE Resource). While serving on its board, Edwards created the first-ever AIDS Walk Miami, according to SAVE Dade. The two

The event will also act as a fundraiser for SAVE Dade, which survives from donations and events like this. Cristy McLelland, who was a co-chair of the committee that selected the honorees, said that the organization always looks to improve its ceremonies, which are part of the community SAVE Dade tries to protect. “We’re looking to raise very serious money — this is truly a team effort. Groundbreaking Ruling from EEOC

Jacqui Charvet CoAdministrator of TERI (Transgender Equality Rights Initiatives)

New rule will protect transgender job seekers

W

ASHINGTON – In what is being called a groundbreaking ruling, the agency that enforces the nation’s job discrimination laws has ruled that transgender people are protected from bias in the workplace. The decision late last week by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) said that a refusal to hire or otherwise discriminate on the basis of gender identity is by definition sex discrimination under federal law. While some federal courts have reached the same conclusion, employment law experts said the EEOC decision is groundbreaking because it sets a national standard that offers employers clear guidance on the issue. “This decision is important because the EEOC is the agency with lead authority to interpret and enforce the nation’s employment rights laws,” said Jennifer Pizer, legal director of the UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law and Public Policy. The case involved a California woman who

12

claimed she was denied a contractor job with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) after the contractor learned she had undergone a procedure to change her gender to female. Mia Macy, an Army veteran and former police detective, initially applied for the position as a man and was told that she was qualified for the job as a ballistics technician. Then she informed the contractor that she was changing her gender. After that, she was told funding for the job was cut. She later learned someone else was hired for the position. Macy filed a complaint with the ATF, which told her that federal job discrimination laws did not apply to transgender people. The Transgender Law Center, a legal rights advocacy group, took up her case. The ruling does not yet determine that she was discriminated against but that she can bring a charge of discrimination under the law. EEOC spokeswoman Justine Lisser said the unanimous ruling from the five-member agency does not create a new cause of action. It clarifies that charges of gender stereotyping are considered claims of sex discrimination under existing law.

n his how-not-to book Gray & Gay: A Journey Of Self-Acceptance, Fort Lauderdale resident and octogenarian John D. Siegfried, M.D.—with two artificial knees, an artificial hip and a quintuple cardiac bypass—tells an engrossing story of his bad decisions, protracted anxieties and forks in an anguished road that eventually lead to what he claims is personal happiness. The youngest among us will find his coming out story difficult to understand in light of the fact that the Stonewall riots are now 43 years old. The middle-aged among us may be more inclined to allow him his rather apologetic explanations for why and how he negotiated gay sex while being married to a woman, but even his contemporaries may raise an eyebrow when he describes his rationale for staying with his long-time partner, Howard Apperman, who according to Siegfried never wanted sex with him, but began a passionate affair with a close friend of theirs. Siegfried writes, “I realized gradually my sexual fulfillment wasn’t his responsibility; it’s mine.” Really? He adds that he decided to stay with Apperman, recalling that he himself had cheated on his wife three times. That odd equation and some counseling got them into an eighteen-point contract in which both partners are free to get sex on their own. While I might laugh at Siegfried’s convoluted route to this contract, most long term couples I know reach that same understanding, albeit through a variety of methods, and I’ll never turn down a story of a gay man who finally gets the sex and/or love he has been denying himself. The book ends without Siegfried describing his current sex life, but it leads us to believe he’s gettin’ some. I have to admit to reading every page of this memoir even when it became painfully obvious that Siegfried has gone to great lengths to arrange favorable lighting for the facts of his life. Is this a negative criticism of Gray & Gay? No. Not one among us is totally above attempts to justify his extrications from disingenuous situations very much of our own making, and I love a story in which a smart man does stupid things. I’ll hold with Apperman when Siegfried reports his saying, “Mostly, you’ve been a success throughout your life, but in some ways you’ve screwed up.” Read Gray & Gay for its colorful details. Siegfried tells us that on the first night of his

Photo of John Siegfried by Tony Adams honeymoon, while his wife was in the bathroom changing into a white silk night gown, he put on a pair of “silk red-and-blue boxer shorts emblazoned with the University of Pennsylvania emblem.” Again, really? John, are you sure you’re gay? Siegfried writes about his visit to a pastor when contemplating divorcing his wife. The pastor’s advice was in the form of a question. He asks Siegfried which he would prefer, a year in the Caribbean with the wife or a week in DC with the boyfriend. Somehow this question leads Siegfried to justification for his asking for a divorce. It illustrates the theme of this book: How do we look at the half full or empty glasses of our lives and how do we learn to accept what we are and are not given. In addition, Siegfried repeatedly wonders what he might have become if he had been an honest and openly gay man and if the major binary decisions of his life had been the opposite. When asked if he regrets not having become divorced much earlier in life, he responds with an emphatic no, and rationalizes that through the grace of God, the constraints of his marriage kept him from becoming a victim of HIV/AIDS. Again, really? How will acquiring Siegfried’s story benefit you? All profits from its sale will go to the National Stonewall Museum and Archives, 1300 East Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. sexual revolutions, civil rights movements and ever changing cultural norms, from polygamy to common law marriages. What constitutes a marriage is so fluid that many anthropologists do not even use the word, preferring “unions” or “alliances,” said Roger Lancaster, a professor of anthropology and cultural studies at George Mason University in Virginia. “People are inventive and creative about the ways they’ve forged ties to one another.” Today almost 50 percent of traditional marriages end in divorce but somehow it is same sex marriage that is going to destroy the institution itself. Really? Larry King has had 8

LAPD recently announced in a community meeting in Hollywood that it would open the 24-bed facility for both male and female transgender people at the downtown women’s jail, according to a Los Angeles Times Article. Transgender advocates who attended the meeting with police officials in Hollywood praised the initiative, noting that

police officers historically showed little concern for the fate of transgender people who wound up jailed. Previously, transgender people arrested by the police landed in the station closest to where they were detained, which often would be the Hollywood Community Police Station. Transgender women suspects resided with the jails’ male populations, putting them at risk of sexual assault and other violence. The LAPD policy change includes a provision requiring police officers to treat transgender people with respect and courtesy and prohibits physical searches of them designed

involved. There was no paperwork, no divorce, and — more often than not — no love. If there is a constant in the history of marriage it is that economics have shaped the institution rather than romance or procreation. Marriages of convenience were the norm and they remained so in Western societies well into the 19th century. They are still the rule in parts of central Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The Muslim tradition of a temporary “pleasure” union, which goes back to the days of Muhammad, is still used to legalize sex under Islamic law. Arranged marriages were extremely popular among the Royal Houses of Europe, get your heir to the throne to marry a princess from another country and overnight your kingdom might double up in size. European commoners who couldn’t legalarried & divorced most ly divorce were allowed to sell their wives. Beheaded most spouses Mtimes to the same spouse And when it was not about politics, powdivorces. Kim Kardashian’s marriage cost 10 er or economics, rulers would make up their own laws. King Henry VIII broke away from million dollars and lasted 72 days. Newt GinCatholicism and started his own church so he grich had affairs while his first and second wives were very ill. Kelsey Grammer ended could divorce and marry again — and again. Marriage as it is known today did not ex- his over the phone. Advocates for gay marriage say it’s the ist 2,000 years ago, or 200 years ago for that matter. Rather than “the most fundamen- natural evolution of an institution that’s no tal institution of civilization,” marriage has longer tied exclusively to procreation. “Marrying means to halve one’s rights and double one’s duties” – Arthur Schopenhauer. (1788-1860) n calling for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, right wing politicians, presidential wannabe’s, Churches and other homophobic interest groups have described heterosexual marriage as “the most fundamental institution of civilization “forged during millennia of human experience.” In their view, placing gay marriage on the same pedestal as heterosexual marriage would destroy the family, it would be equivalent to endorsing homosexuality and make it part of the fabric of society. Alas, for much of its history, the so called “sanctity of marriage” has been a matter of plain economic calculations, and more often than not, a condition to be endured rather than enjoyed. Notions of marriage taken for granted today — its voluntary nature, easy divorce, the legal equality of partners, even the pursuit of happiness — have changed and evolved for centuries. In ancient Greece as in Rome, fathers, like fathers in many other cultures, considered their daughters property and used them as barter for the purpose of cementing economic or political alliances. The Government was out of the picture. A religious institution may or may not have been

to determine their biological sex. Police officers also will be trained to address transgender people by their preferred name and gender. Masen Davis, executive director of the Transgender Law Center, noted after the meeting that the new policy took five years to develop. The process involved numerous meetings, a survey of transgender people regarding their experiences with the LAPD and the preparation of a report recommending policy changes. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck promised disciplinary action would be taken against any police officers who violated the policy. The new policy appears to be a promising first step for the police department of one of the nation’s largest cities, but it fails to address the issue of what happens to transgender suspects who are arraigned in court and transferred for longer stays in the Los Angeles County Jail. That facility remains unaffected by the progressive measure, which places the Los Angeles transgender commu-

imperative. Heterosexual couples now have other methods of procreation at their disposal, a fact that questions whether same sex marriage can be negated due to biology. Also, interracial couples, they point out, couldn’t marry in some states until 1967. Just like gay couples today. As a gay man the choice to marry or not should be made available to me. I do not believe in the institution of marriage per se, but when a political party, a Church made up of a bunch of old men and pedophiles sitting in the Vatican, or my own Government, tell me I am banned from one of their institutions that’s when I want to join it, even though they do not have the power or moral standing to arbitrarily determine what is the union of two souls. And so, because of this, next month my partner and I will have our own “marriage” ceremony. It will not be legally recognized by the State of Florida nor by “this great country of ours” or by a religious denomination, but we will give power of attorneys to one another and we will legally become each other’s health surrogates, in front of our friends and families. No matter what the law says I will not accept to be a second class citizen because of my sexual orientation nor, most certainly, will I ever apologize for the urgings of my heart. “It’s hard to predict where marriage will go in the future,” said Marilyn Yalom, a senior scholar at Stanford University’s Institute for Research on Women & Gender. “The only thing that I can predict is that there will always be something in us that calls for another to complement ourselves, someone to be a soul-mate and to witness our lives”. Even if it is only for 55 hours. Ask Britney Spears, that’s how long the sanctity of her marriage lasted.

nity back in the same predicament – one that transgender communities across the nation face if they get confined to jail. There’s no escaping the reality of jailhouse violence, and it’s a dangerous setting for anyone. The threat is greater for LGBT people, and it is even more dangerous for transgender people who tend to stand out in such a close, basic environment. The Dallas County Jail holds both suspects arrested by police prior to court appearances and people sentenced to jail terms. Others housed there are awaiting transfers to prisons to serve sentences. Dallas County Jail’s policy concerning LGBT people allows inmates to self-identify themselves as gay or transgender and request confinement in a separate tank, but it is optional, according to a spokesperson for Sheriff Lupe Valdez, who reportedly was consulted by Los Angeles police officials about their project. hirty years ago, Mike Wallace told me that he had been attracted to a handsome male co-worker at a broadcast station in Detroit. He speculated that every man had homosexual feelings. Both my father and Ray’s father thought the same thing. We think our dads had male crushes in their lives too. Why else would they make such an observation? In today’s parlance, male-male, non-sexual relations are called “bromances.” This refers to when guys, regardless of their sexual orientations, have intimate relationships with other men. They want to spend their free time with each other. For instance, they might go fishing together every weekend, just not at Brokeback Mountain. But Mike Wallace, the recently-deceased CBS veteran newsman, never courted a close friendship with the handsome man with whom he worked. Yet, he seemed fascinated by the recollections of his feelings, and wanted to share them with me at a conference at which I spoke about gay issues. He wondered what I thought about his belief that every man has such feelings. If it’s true that every male has had, or will have, a male crush in his life, we have to accept that this is true for Pope Benedict XVI, Fred Phelps, Pat Robertson, Chuck Norris, Rick Santorum, George W. Bush, and Mark Wahlberg. How men react to their male

Mike Wallace Had a Male Crush

A recent study published in The New York Times suggests that our DNA dictates whether we will be Republicans or Democrats, whether we will loathe our fantasies or enjoy them, whether we will keep small groups of loyal friends, or share our love with everyone, whether we will embrace religious dogma, or reject regimented living. Our DNA, then, can impact how we deal with our male crushes. My guess would be that our DNA also impacts how long we live in marriages that betray our feelings, and how long we live in countries that threaten our feelings. Fear is a common denominator in all of our lives. We fear our feelings, the differences we see in others, and the insignificance of our lives. It seems to me that the well-balanced life is one in which we embrace all of our feelings. When we make decisions, they should honestly reflect our awareness of our feelings, the assumption that all other living things share our struggle with fear, and that how we respond to our feelings dictates the happiness we experience in our own lives, and that we create in the lives of others. Men, like Mike Wallace, who have had a male crush, owe it to themselves and to those in their lives not to deny their experiences. Rejecting our feelings by creating religious or political wars against them is dishonest and destructive. Brian McNaught was named “the godfather of gay diversity training” by The New York Times. He works with corporate executives globally, is the author of six books, and is featured in seven educational DVDs. He and his spouse Ray Struble divide their year between Fort Lauderdale and Provincetown. Visit Brian-McNaught.com for more information.

‘Houdini’

a Magical Role for Actor

By J.W. Arnold

D

ennis Watkins was born to play the master illusionist and escape artist Harry Houdini. “I’m lucky in that I’m a third generation magician,” the openly gay Chicago actor explains. “My granddad ran a magic shop for 30 years. I grew up and learned magic from him.” In fact, Watkins’ grandfather met the infamous magician and regaled his grandson with the tale many times as the two attended annual conventions of the Texas Association of Magicians that would draw as many as 1,200 participants for a week of magic shows, lectures and workshops. “I was 8 years old the first time (he took me), and it was like going to Disney World for the first time,” recalls Watkins. “It was awesome.” Years later while a student at Southern Methodist University, his skills would be put to work on stage when Watkins met writer and director Nathan Allen. Along with 10 ensemble members who formed the House Theatre of Chicago, the duo created Death and Harry Houdini.

May 2, 2012 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com

Allen had seen Watkins perform magic tricks and had a really strong interest in magic, himself. After reading a book about Houdini, Allen selected the subject of his first play. “It was 2001 and I had just graduated from college. We did the show in a 40-seat, teeny-weeny black box theater on the north side of Chicago. It was really just an ounce of the spectacle,” he says of the play that was resurrected in 2003 with a bigger budget and again this year for the 10th anniversary of the company. Each night, Watkins not only must master his lines, he must also successfully execute the tricks that drew thousands of people to Houdini’s shows, including the infamous water torture cell. Watkins enthusiastically offers, “I never get tired of it. It’s such a fun show to do with all the magic and the richness of Harry’s story and life. I get lifted upside down in a straightjacket, locked in a box, dunked in a tank of water.” Houdini was incredibly driven, smart and determined, says Watkins. At the height of his career (1900-26), few

performers were doing the intense escape work and “Handcuff Harry” continued to push the envelope, introducing the Chinese water torture cell in 1912. “He was a master of his destiny….a huge megalomanic with worldwide fame and wealth that were unprecedented for the time…and even his relationships were planned and plotted,” says Watkins, noting that Houdini also served as his own publicist, “a great one.” He adds, “I think it’s fun to play a character who is that complex and allowed to be as big and grandiose as he is in our play.” But Watkins also warns audiences that they will not be seeing a biography that traces Houdini’s life, describing the show more as “a sort of ride through the timeline of his life” that is accentuated with song and dance, clever stagecraft and vivid storytelling. The show opened at Miami’s Arsht Center last weekend to critical acclaim and sold out performances, but audiences still have plenty of opportunities to get swept up in the magical story that has mesmerized Watkins since he was a boy.

Modern Families Featured on Silver Screen

T

Variance Films

wo new feature films opening in South Florida put the focus on the dynamics of dysfunctional modern families: In the Family, opening May 6 at Cinema Paradiso in Fort Lauderdale, follows the shock felt by Chip Hines, a six-year-old who has only known life in Martin, Tennessee with his two dads, Cody and Joey, played by director Patrick Wang. But when Cody is suddenly killed in a car accident, both Chip and Joey struggle to find their footing, especially when they discover Cody left custody of Chip to his sister.Years of seeming acceptance unravel as Chip is taken from the home and Joey must find a way to get his son back, even though the law is not on his side. Critic Roger Ebert gave this touching film four stars. Kathleen Turner, Richard Chamberlain and Jason Ritter headline, The Perfect Family, opening May 11 at the AMC Aventura 24 and AMC Sunset Place West Palm Beach – Mos’ Art Theatre in Lake Park. Turner plays suburban mom and devout Catholic Eileen Cleary, a woman who has always kept up appearances, especially now that she’s nominated for the Catholic Woman of the Year title. When her nonconformist family must be interviewed by the selection committee, including her lesbian daughter (Emily Deschanel), Eileen realizes she can no longer overlook their issues.

Funny Lady Out actress and comedian Lily Tomlin returns to South Florida for one night only, Sunday, May 6, 7:30 p.m. at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Tomlin became a household name on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In, portraying silly characters like Ernestine the telephone switchboard operator, the precocious five year old Edith An, and Mrs. Judith Beasly, “the tasteful lady” who dispenses advice on gracious living. And of course, she was unforgettable in Nine to Five as she and coworkers Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton exacted revenge on their monstrous boss. Tickets are $30-80 at ArshtCenter.org.

Strike Up the Band The Greater Miami Symphonic Band will take audiences on a musical journey to the Wild West on Tuesday, May 8 at Gusman Concert Hall on the campus of the University of Miami in Coral Gables. Conductors Robert Longfield and Thomas Keck will lead the 85 musicians in “The Cowboys” by John Williams, “On The Trail” from Ferde Grofe’s “Grand Canyon Suite,” John Philip Sousa’s march “Daughters of Texas” and Aaron Copland’s famous “Hoedown” from the ballet, “Rodeo.” Tickets for the concert are $15 at GMSB.org or at the Gusman Concert Hall box office on the night of the performance.

A Night of Comedy

Aqua Girl presents Jessica Kirson as this year’s headliner By Andrea Dulanto

2011

I’m very excited. I love the organization and the women who run it. What are your thoughts about performing in Miami? I’ve performed at the South Beach Comedy Festival. They’re fun crowds… [and] I love walking around South Beach—it’s beautiful. Aqua Girl 2012 is takes place May 2-6 in South Beach.Visit AquaGirl.org for more information. If You Go

What: Aqua Girl: A Night of Comedy with Jessica Kirson When: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, May 4 Where: Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach Cost: $30-$35 (Members: $25 in advance) More info: AquaGirl.org/aquagirl-tickets JessicaKirson.com

—the year of the funny woman. Bridesmaids. Tina Fey. Amy Poehler. Bridesmaids. But do funny women exist without Judd Apatow or Lorne Michaels? Pre- and post- Bridesmaids, Jessica Kirson is an out lesbian who has created her own comedic path. On May 4, she makes her way toward the Colony Theatre as comedy headliner for Aqua Girl 2012 in Miami. Kirson has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,The Joy Behar Show, Celebrity Apprentice, and most recently The View on April 27. Her comedy is fearless and direct, particularly when she talks about her weight: “The reason why you haven’t seen Jared from Subway is because I ate him.” On The View, Kirson mentioned how lately she has lost weight. The audience started to applaud, but she cut it short in a deadpan voice: “Don’t even clap—it’ll never fill the hole.” Kirson also appears on The Jessy K Show, a YouTube series of her vlogs and videos at YouTube.com/user/TheJessyKShow. “Unlock Your Inner Beauty/ Make-up Pro Tips” is a parody of beauty vlogs that has Kirson smearing grape jelly on her eyelids and relish on her lips. It’s as gross as it sounds, but it’s gratifying to see someone making fun of the women-must-be-perfect cult. Other videos are like Candid Camera on mild psychedelics. Kirson dances and poses with mannequins at the mall. She asks Australian tourists in Central Park if they know where to find Carol. She wails and holds onto someone in an Elmo costume in Times Square as “free therapy.” During a phone interview with SFGN, Kirson shared her thoughts about comedy and her upcoming performance at Aqua Girl. How would you describe your comedy? Very real, honest, high energy…I make a lot of faces, do a lot of characters. You pursued an M.A. in social work at NYU—can you talk about what made you not want to follow that career? Being a therapist was too heavy for me. I took on people’s problems too much. My mom is a therapist—[she] can see clients then have a great night. I couldn’t.

don’t see you as a female comic—just as a comic’ [and all comics] just want to be seen as comics whether you’re a woman or a man… [yet]… when it comes to business [the major comedy clubs] may have one hundred headliners, and three are women. Not many opportunities for women to get gigs as headliners. What would you say to an LBT woman who wants to be a comic? I encourage everyone to do comedy that wants to do it. It’s a little harder [for lesbians]…I do mainstream stuff. Some lesbian comics don’t. I don’t want to be labeled as a lesbian comic or female comic or Jewish comic. I’m just me. If [you] only focus on [being a] lesbian comic, there’s not a ton of opportunity. There’s Olivia Cruises…Provincetown… [but] it’s a great network of women… I adore them. What are your thoughts about attending Aqua Girl?

Jessica Kirson You’ve said in previous interviews that the social work background helps you connect to the audience— can you talk more about that? I’m aware of people’s feelings, the energy in the room…the more you know about human nature, the better you do as a comedian. Is there a way to turn bad audience energy around? Every single comedian has an enormous number of bad audiences. You have to learn to turn it around. I address the truth… whether it’s low energy or the lighting is bad… I talk about it…if you address that it’s not going well and they laugh… [then] they’re with you. What made you finally decide to go into comedy as a profession? My grandmother suggested [a comedy class]… she said “people are hysterical whenever they’re around you.” I took a class and loved it. What do you think about this current wave of women in comedy (such as Bridesmaids, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, etc.)? It’s about time because there are some really funny women. There are a ton of male comics that aren’t funny… [and] a ton of female comics that no one knows about, who are brilliant. But I have male comics who say to me ‘I

MARY’S Being PLACE By Mary Bondi

R

elationships can come to an end for many reasons. Upon ending some people attempt to jump into a new relationship right away. These same people often jump from one to another without any time spent being single. Is this a familiar pattern in your life? When single, do you preoccupy your time with thoughts and behaviors geared toward finding a partner? This preoccupation can inhibit you from many things, but most importantly, from being more self-aware. If given the opportunity, being single can offer some wonderful opportunities. Often, our friends and loved ones want to quickly ‘set us up’ sometimes sending the message that being single is a condition that needs to be cured. Being single is just as natural as being in a relationship. It’s important to take the time to choose an appropriate partner, and determine whether you are emotionally ready to move on. Being in a relationship will add to your life in many ways but just being in a relationship will not necessarily bring you happiness. First we must learn to be happy with ourselves before dating someone else. This will then open that loving space for a partner to compliment our lives, instead of looking for someone to complete it. A great deal of wisdom can come during this time, if you use it for your own

Single personal growth. If you commit to enjoy your single time, you can give yourself time to grow, learn new things, and expand emotionally, psychologically, physically and spiritually. Think of being single as a wonderful opportunity for deepening your self-knowledge, expanding your emotional growth, and becoming more self-aware. Self-awareness is one of the most important goals we need in order to live a more balanced and positive life. This does not translate into becoming self-centered, self-absorbed, or selfish. It is about having an understanding of your innermost feelings and thoughts. Sharing these parts of yourself (innermost feelings and thoughts) are important tools to get comfortable with, so you can communicate them in your next relationship. During this break explore some of the following tools: • Spend time doing things you like. • Take charge of your life and find out what you are truly made for. • Take time to explore your feelings. Start with happy, sad, joy, angry and scared. • Nurture, respect and be patient with your self. • Focus on other relationships such as friends, and family. • Get to know what your morals, values and beliefs are.

May 2, 2012 • SouthFloridaGayNews.com

• Get to know what you want and get an idea of who you are. • Make way for new challenges that will bring you more happiness. • Establish healthy boundaries while demanding respect from potential partners. • Most important: learn to love yourself. This is a pre-requisite for loving someone else. You must love yourself before loving another person.

We attract partners in our lives at the conscious level of where we are. This means if someone ‘does not feel loveable’ or feels they ‘are not good enough’ then they will continue to attract partners where they will feel this in their relationship. These subconscious beliefs are what I call ‘personal lies.’ Everyone has them. It’s beneficial to know what our ‘personal lies’ are. These lies come up at different times in our lives especially in close relationships, as they want an expression in order to be healed. The time when one is single can be a time used to challenge and heal these ‘lies’. This is one of the areas that I specialize

in. I have been studying and researching patterns and ‘personal lies’ for years. I see first-hand how these ‘lies’ restrict individuals from reaching their true potential in their lives. We are not always aware of our ‘personal lies’ and distorted thoughts because they are not always in our conscious awareness. Sometimes we may need outside support to assist us with this work. In my practice I utilize specialized modalities such as EMDR and Hypnosis to assist clients in breaking these ‘lies’ and sabotaging patterns. Remember these lies are not your truth, but somewhere and somehow you believed these thoughts and it became part of your story you carried throughout life. Use this time to explore your repeated patterns in your life and relationships. If you do not learn the unhealthy patterns you need to change, there is a greater possibility that they will continue and lead to more anguish in the future. If you are serious about having a long lasting and fulfilling love relationship, get serious about yourself while single. The personal growth that you can accomplish while single will assist you to find a more compatible partner. Wishing you much success, love and abundance in your next relationship. In peace and happiness! Mary
