Former Director of Pride South Florida Violates Probation By Jason Parsley
In order to prevent something like this from happening again Hansen said PSF has put in place new check policies such as requiring two signatures on each check, and gotten rid of all ATM cards. Hansen said the theft set the organization back, but under new leadership they’ve been able to come back stronger than ever.
T
he former director of Pride South Florida, who stole more than $46,000 from the organization, recently was arrested for violating his probation.
Since Cruz’s release in February, after serving one year in jail, he’s made only one payment of $460 to PSF, said current director Marc Hansen. But according to the terms of his probation he was supposed to pay an initial $10,000 upfront to the organization.
“This money does not belong to us as a corporation. This is the community’s money. We have just been put in place to protect it, and create an event for the community,” Hansen said. “Getting this money back will only put us in a better position. Although Michael not repaying us won’t hurt us, it is still our responsibility to get the money back. I will do everything in my ability to see to it to we get it back.”

Hansen told SFGN that Cruz was given an opportunity to come before the board to explain his situation, and possibly renegotiate the terms, but he failed to do that because he was embarrassed, Hansen said Cruz’s probation officer told him. “At $460 a month it will take 8 years before we’re paid back,” Hansen said.
When released from custody, Cruz will have to face a judge for the violation, and can be reinstated with amended conditions, or even sentenced to more jail time.

Bar Wars Play Their Way Through the Courts Alibi Owners Win Preliminary Rulings By Norm Kent
ruling unsuccessfully, so far.
ast year, SFGN profiled some of the litigation between Alibi owners Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrete, and the former owners who sold them the bar, George Kessinger and Terry L. Norman.
Meanwhile, Realtor John Castelli also wound up suing over the deal, because when it originally closed, Kessinger held back part of the brokerage fee due his real estate firm. Once the deal was fully consummated, Castelli sought the balance. With George Castrataro as his counsel, he prevailed against Kessinger, and a settlement is now pending.
L
While the case winds its way through the system, it’s important to note some significant rulings in favor of current owners Padgett and Negrete. First, Judge Carol Lisa Phillips made a finding of fraudulent misrepresentation. She entered a ruling concluding that Kessinger and Norman made knowing fraudulent misrepresentations of material facts in the sale, causing Padgett and Negrete to suffer damages in reliance on the representation. On February 17 the court awarded Pagette and Negrete $255,000.00. Second, the court found that Terry Norman specifically breached the non compete agreement he had entered by forming a business relationship with Matty’s on the Drive. Consequently, Judge Marc H. Gold enjoined Norman and Matty’s from any further employment, consulting, management or financial transactions with each other. The court battle has been ongoing, and as recently as last month, each party has peppered the other with various subpoenas and notices. The essence of the claim by Plaintiffs Padgett and Negrete is that they were falsely induced into paying a purchase price higher than they reasonably should have. Norman lost his argument that the plaintiffs did not pay the full purchase price as the court found that payment was made in full. Norman has challenged the

If that’s not enough, Bank of America also brought legal action against the Alibi’s original owners, George Kessinger,Terry Norman, and Ron Gofrank for loans borrowed and unpaid for the purchase and opening of their Palm Springs business. It appears that the bank is also contending the former owners failed to disclose material matters to them prior to their executing the loan. This action is still pending, and is a bit beyond the scope of SFGN’s coverage.
Update: Kildea vs. Sidelines Meanwhile, in another matter, Martin Kildea is a plaintiff against Sidelines owner Laurie Whitaker, who continues to operate the bar, denying that Kildea has now, or has ever had, legal ownership interests therein. We can let the court decide that. This piece is not about the legal issues. Without naming names, someone has foolishly been circulating copies of inconclusive and isolated court pleadings around town, depicting images of Whitaker, one where she is seen joking, and holding up a finger, after a touchdown against the Dolphins, in a clear attempt to uselessly embarrass her. If someone has a claim to make, let him or her

make it in the light of day. It won’t fly to senselessly go after Whitaker or her life partner, Jennifer Morales, who have contributed so much already to the good of the LGBT community and so many of our honorable causes and charities. It’s stupid. As the claim makes its way through the courts, judges and legal rulings will decide the outcome of this case, not offensive and anonymous mailings obviously authored by people with a malicious intent to defame.
Update: David vs. Giorgi Speaking of defamation, Sean David, the owner of Johnny’s Bar, has filed a claim against a local businessman, Richard Giorgi. In full disclosure, I am David’s counsel. It is a libel lawsuit, accusing Giorgi of filing false police reports against David. Giorgi had filed complaints against David with ABT, BSO, the Department of Agriculture, and the FLPD. David alleges all the complaints are specious and fabricated, generated so that Giorgi could extract a fee for a commission on a business deal. Giorgi will have 20 days to answer the suit when he is served with the pleadings. The case was filed last month.

he Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s (MDGLCC) 11th Annual Gala Awards Celebration: The Orange Gala will take place on Saturday, June 23, at the Hilton Miami Downtown. This event traditionally attracts the “movers & shakers” in the South Florida LGBT and allied business community as well as representatives from most of our community service organizations. The awards celebration will honor corporate and individual supporters of the Miami-Dade LGBT community selected for their long-term commitment to fostering diversity, as well as for their efforts in contributing to the overall well-being and quality of life in South Florida. This year’s award recipients include IKEA; AT&T, Business of the Year; Steve Haas, The Wells Fargo Business Person of the Year; Miami Beach Visitor & Convention Authority, The Office Depot Non-Profit Organization of the Year and Daniel Spring, Special Recognition Award. As the voice of the LGBT business community, the Chamber is especially proud to have such an exemplary group to recognize this year. From a global LGBT trailblazer to hometown heroes, this year’s gala honorees are as diverse as the LGBT community itself. The GALA is well known for the exclusive silent auction, which includes donations

from many area hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments. In addition to raising money for the Chamber, the silent auction provides an opportunity for local businesses to showcase their products and services to the community. For the past several years, the MDGLCC Gala Committee has selected a different color of the rainbow flag for the Gala’s theme and has encouraged attendees to wear a splash of that color to the event. The theme for this year’s event is “The Orange Gala” featuring a color, which represents optimism, warmth, happiness, adventure and risk-taking. This annual event, MDGLCC’s principal fundraising effort of the year, helps sustain operations and the everincreasing demand to expand programming. The 11th Annual Gala Awards Celebration: “The Orange Gala” will feature a VIP champagne reception and silent auction beginning at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m., the awards ceremony at 9 p.m., and then dancing beginning at 10 p.m. Tickets are $1,750 for VIP tables of 10, $175 for individual VIP tickets and $100 for general admission. Tickets are available online at www.gaybizmiami. com, by calling 305-673-4440, or e-mailing RSVP@gaybizmiami.com. This is the most important annual fundraising effort that the MDGLCC hosts and your support is greatly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you at The Orange Gala on Saturday, June 23, 2012!

Billy Graham backs NC anti-gay marriage amendment

ENOIR CITY, Tenn. – A yearbook article about a gay student’s experiences at Lenoir City High School has ignited both anger and support in the community. “I have received an unbelievable number of e-mails from parents and concerned citizens,’’ Lenoir City High School Principal Steve Millsaps told the Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/KeVfh4). Yearbooks were distributed on Friday and by Monday local blogs were filled with postings about the article, titled ``It’s OK to be Gay.’’ It profiles the experiences of student Zac Mitchell but was written by a different student who said she does not want to be identified for fear of retaliation. Students said petitions were being circulated urging them to tear the page from their yearbook during graduation and to deny Mitchell the right to attend the ceremony. Loudon County School Board member Van Shaver used his blog to call for a criminal investigation into the Yearbook Faculty Adviser, James Yoakley. “What I am intolerant of is an adult, a teacher no less, inflicting their personal beliefs and sexual orientation decisions on impressionable students,’’ Shaver said. Yoakley was not available for comment. Recently another of Yoakley’s students was involved in controversy. Franklin Graham. Franklin Graham recorded a message last month in support of Amendment One, which is on the ballot in the election Tuesday. “At 93, I never thought we would have to debate the definition of marriage,’’ Billy Graham’s statement said. ``The Bible is clear – God’s definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. I want to urge my fellow North Carolinians to vote for the marriage amendment’’ Tuesday. North Carolina already outlaws gay marriage, but adding that ban to the state constitution would make it much harder to change in the future. Opponents to the amendment argue the language is vague and it could have wider consequences beyond those for gay couples.

board member for an Ohio regional Boy Scouts group who resigned to protest the removal of a lesbian den mother said he wants the national organization to review its ban on gays. The Boy Scouts of America’s policy of not allowing gays within its ranks has been debated for more than a decade since being upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. It is facing renewed questioning in eastern Ohio after Jennifer Tyrrell, the mother of a 7-yearold scout, was thrown out in April. David Sims resigned from the Ohio River Valley Council’s board Friday after learning of Tyrrell’s story. “Ms. Tyrrell’s removal goes against my fundamental beliefs of how we should treat our fellow human beings and is, in my opinion, wholly discriminatory,” he said in his resignation letter, released by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Sims achieved Scouting’s highest honor, Eagle Scout, as did his father and grandfather. He said he understands that the ban is legal but thinks it’s time to re-examine the policy. Tyrrell, of Bridgeport, Ohio, called his resignation a huge statement. “I’m just wondering how many board members, how many scouts that they have to lose before they change the policy,’’ she said Tuesday. Gay rights groups have taken up Tyrrell’s cause, starting an online petition to get the Scouts to change their policy. Tyrrell said that
within the past week she has heard from dozens of people, including some current scouts who are gay. “It’s sad,’’ she said. “These kids are fine examples of what a young man should be, and they have to hide their true selves.’’ The Scouts say that as a private organization they have a right to exclude gays. “We value the freedom of everyone to express their opinion and believe to disagree does not mean to disrespect,’’ said Deron Smith, a spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America at its headquarters in Irving, Texas. “We’d like to thank this Boy Scout Council board member for his service to youth and wish him well.’’ The organization has long said it understands that not everyone agrees with its stance, but it believes scouting is not the right place for youngsters to be exposed to issues of sexual orientation.
Judge scolds prosecutors for dismissing gay juror
S
AN DIEGO – A San Diego judge has dismissed an entire jury panel after prosecutors dismissed a gay man as a potential juror in a same-sex marriage case. U-T San Diego reports (http://bit.ly/IpSsxj) Superior Court Judge Joan Weber ruled Tuesday that defendants in the case were denied a representative jury and called the city attorney office’s actions “shocking.’’ The case stems from the 2010 arrest of nine people at the city clerk’s office where they protested Proposition 8, California’s samesex marriage ban. Prosecutors say the potential juror indicated he had protested in support of gay rights issues in the past, so they deemed him an unsuitable juror for the case. Attorneys for the accused activists say prosecutors systematically excluded gay people from the jury, violating their client’s right to a jury of peers.

– Joe Solmonese Bryan Fischer, a policy official with the American Family Association, criticized Grenell’s appointment, characterizing Grenell as a “gay activist” and suggesting he would be trying to promote a “homosexual agenda.” Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, noted that Grenell publicly criticized President Bush for opposing

epublican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s openly gay advisor on foreign policy resigned Tuesday, May 1, just two weeks after the campaign announced his role. According to the Washington Post, which broke the story, Richard Grenell “resigned in the wake of a full-court press by anti-gay conservatives.” But Grenell, in a statement to the Post, said only that his ability to “speak clearly and forcefully on the issues has been greatly diminished by the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues that sometimes comes from a presidential campaign.” Grenell’s statement also thanked Romney for his confidence in Grenell’s ability to serve the campaign on national security and foreign policy issues and for Romney’s “clear message to me that being openly gay was a non-issue for him and his team.” The Post quoted Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades as saying the campaign is “disappointed that Ric decided to resign from the campaign for his own personal reasons.” “We wanted him to stay,” said Rhoades, “because he had superior qualifications for the position he was hired to fill.” Most gay activists see Grenell as a victim of the Republican Party’s strong right-wing base. R. Clarke Cooper, head of Log Cabin Republicans, echoing Grenell’s statement, blamed Grenell’s departure on “hyper-partisan discussion of issues unrelated to” Grenell’s national security qualifications. Cooper said Grenell “was essentially hounded by the far right and far left.” Stonewall Democrats’ National Executive Director Jerame Davis said Grenell was “mercilessly hounded by religious conservatives.” To Davis, Romney’s appointment of Grenell was never serious, but just a “crassly cynical political move by Romney to fool LGBT voters into believing he’s not as anti-gay as his

ver since political newcomer Patrick Murphy decided to run for Congress he’s been attacking Allen West. In fact West is the reason Murphy decided to jump into the race in the first place. And when West ditched Congressional district 22, which included parts of Wilton Manors, for more favorable territory in the newly created district 18 – Murphy jumped ship as well to follow him. Now West has decided to fight back, launching his first attack against the CPA and businessman with a poster that reads at the top “BARACK OBAMA & the BIG SPENDERS Present,” and then continues at the bottom with “TAXMAGEDDON.” In the middle there’s a photo of Obama and former Speaker of the House Nancy
Pelosi scowling. The West campaign must not have been able to find a similar scowling photo of Murphy because instead they used one of him with a bright smile. W h i l e t h e We s t poster is attractive and dramatic, it’s wildly misleading. Murphy doesn’t even hold a political office so there’s no way to lump him together with Obama, Pelosi and Congress’ failures. The poster is referring to the expiration of Bush-era tax cuts on personal income, capital gains, and dividends, in addition to several other tax breaks that will occur at the end of the year. If Congress doesn’t act taxes will go up $494 billion, starting at the beginning of 2013. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke referred to the end of the year expirations as a “massive fiscal cliff.”

Voices of Pride Ends Season with Concert and Fundraiser
VOP in Concert at Arts Garage
V
oices of Pride, The Gay Men’s Chorus of the Palm Beaches, will perform at the Arts Garage in Delray Beach on Friday, May 11 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Arts Garage is located at 180 NE First Street in the Pineapple District. Tickets are $15-25 in advance, $5 more at the door. Under the baton of artistic director Tom Pilecki, the chorus will perform a variety of music from ballads to torch from Garland to Gaga whose popular song, Born this Way, was gaily stretched to become the concert’s title, Born this WAAAAAAAY! According to Pilecki the concert will feature a tribute to the LGBT armed forces, songs from the hit musical Jersey Boys and hits from the 60’s group The Four Seasons. “Of course, no Voices of Pride show is complete without an appearance by the incredible Mandrews Sisters,” said Pilecki. “This will be a laid back evening of fun and good music.” Twenty-two men will be on stage at the Arts Garage, which according to Matthew Farmer, programming and facility manager at the Arts Garage, is the largest ensemble to take the stage so far.
“It’s a wonderful space,” Pilecki said. “The cabaret tables, the dance space, and the overall atmosphere are unique and wonderful. We love the energy they are creating in the space, and in the county. And we’re thrilled to be part of it. “We’re really excited to have the Voices of Pride,” Farmer said. “I’ve known Tom Pilecki and George Lydon and some of the other members for years. They asked if we’d be interested in having them perform and here we are. And yes, the audience may dance.” “This is their first performance,” said Alyona Aleksandra Ushe, executive director. “We’re talking about making it a long-term relationship. They have a distinct style of programming. It’s the type of performance we enjoy having at our venue.” Although this is the chorus’ first concert

at the Arts Garage, it is their last show of the season. During the summer they will perform at fundraisers and small private parties. They will announce their fall season at the end of the summer. Arts Garage is a multi-disciplinary cultural hub for visual artists, musicians, performers, film presenters and arts educators. Located in the lower level of Old School Square Parking Garage, Arts Garage is at the center of Delray Beach’s entertainment district in the Pineapple Grove Arts District. Higher priced tickets are for cabaret seating where guests may BYOE (bring your own everything (food and drink)) and are close to the stage. Lower cost seats are for auditorium seating in the back of the room. All seats have a clear view of the stage.
VOP Joins with MCC to Stock Food Pantry By Donald Cavanaugh
T
he Voices of Pride Gay Men’s Chorus and the Sanctuary Choir of the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) of the Palm Beaches are offering two concerts in May to raise funds to support the on-going operation of the MCC’s Bill Meissner Food Pantry. Concerts will be held at the MCC Church at 4857 Northlake Blvd in Palm Beach Gardens 7 p.m. Saturday, May 19 and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online at VoicesofPride.org/mccfoodpantry. Additional contributions are welcome. “The concerts will offer a variety of selections of non-secular, secular and patriotic music sung by the two choruses individually and together,” said Tom Pilecki, artistic director for Voices of Pride. “We’ll close both programs with a combined choir grand finale.” In addition to the concerts, the interna-
10
tionally recognized West Palm Beach design firm, Jack Fhillips Design, is providing silent auctions of home furnishings at each concert. Items for bid will be displayed before the concerts and winning bidders will be announced at the end of the shows. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the food pantry. “The food pantry has seen explosive growth in demand as the economy has continued to struggle,” said Rev. Lea Brown, pastor at MCC. Over 2,000 people are served every month and that’s twice the number we were helping just over a year ago.” According to Brown, the MCC food pantry purchases much of its foodstuffs from Feeding South Florida. During season, Feeding South Florida charges 19 cents a pound. During the summer, their supplies nearly dry up. So costs quadruple for the pantry because it has to purchase
much of its food at retail prices. “Voices of Pride is proud and pleased to be able to help this worthy cause at MCC,” Pilecki said. “The MCC Choir and Voices of Pride complement each other musically and philosophically. Part of our mission is to encourage acceptance of diversity and respect for all people through music. Raising funds to help feed people in need, regardless of who or what they are certainly brings us to a deeper level of achieving our goal.” Brown added: “We expect the concerts will raise close to half the money we need for the coming year. Last year’s concerts were well attended and we anticipate that happening again. We are truly blessed to have Voices of Pride help us in our mission.” Call the church at 561-775-5900 or visit MCCpalmbeach.org for more information. “Today I ask you to stand with me as a proud Republican, a Rep. Wyatt at press conference proud veteran, and a proud gay man who wants to protect all kids, addressing bullying in our schools. “I will not lie to myself anymore about my own sexuality. It has probably been the hardest thing to come to terms with. I have always ignored it. I didn’t even think about it or want to talk about it. I’ve not been immune to it. I hear the comments, usually snide ones, about me. “I am not the first or last Republican to come out. I have just gotten tired of the bigotry being shown on both sides of the aisle on gay issues. Florida AIDS Walk 2012 By Mark Martin, Florida AIDS Walk Director

im said to me, “I’m invisible.” I lifted my head from my daydream, and looked at him quizzically. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Don’t get me wrong — I love my life with you all, but when we’re out, Don is the sexy one, Terry’s the popular one, you’re the entertaining one, and I’m just me,” he paused. Tim was shy. While he could be considered attractive, he fell just outside the bulls’ eye of the harsh standards that we in the gay community often use to classify new acquaintances. Tim’s voice, softened by a backwoods-Alabama accent and a sweet baritone pitch, often caused strangers to mistake him for being unthreatening or timid. For those of us who were given the opportunity to know him that southern-drawl often delivered some of the sharpest, wittiest and most astute commentary you might ever witness. He’d have given Designing Women’s Julia Sugarbaker a real run for her money, had they ever met in some alternate universe

“People walk right past me … forget my name … look right through me … it sucks. On some days, I just wish I mattered more.” No matter how often I recall that conversation, despite the numerous vivid details that I reproduce in my mind, I just can’t remember how I responded to Tim that night. I am sure I told him how important he was to all of us, and reminded him that he was one of the core people in our group of friends who had known each other for nearly 10 years. I probably made a joke to lighten the mood, and then tried to change the subject to get him into a happier frame of mind. Tim would let the topic go, put his “game-face” back on and the fun weekend would resume. Like the rest of us, Tim struggled with his personal demons, but I think that his beat him down pretty badly. Tim was a great friend. In 1999, I left behind everyone I knew to live in DC and organize the Millennium March on Washington. During a particularly bad period of homesickness for me, as if Tim could read my mind, he sent me a care package containing
a letter he’d written to me, in which he called me his “muse.” He went on to write how proud he was of what I was doing, and thanked me, saying I’d given him courage to say and do things in life that he wouldn’t have done otherwise. That letter touched me in a way that I can’t describe on paper – and believe me, I’ve tried. I still have it today. McNaught’s Notes
History is filled with Gay Folk By Brian McNaught
ries to tell, had they dared. Decorum at the time required discretion. Their house was staffed by Filipino boys, and they had a “very delightful” young tenant, Archie Clark Kerr, who worked for the British Embassy, and was described as “high-spirited and mischievous.” Years later, as the British Ambassador, Kerr went to Iowa to stay with a strapping farm boy

y friend Bob Bauman asked me if I knew the name “Archibald Butt.” It sounded familiar, and since Bob and I are from the same gay civil rights era, I said, “I think so.” I was wrong. Butt was the confirmed bachelor military advisor to President William Howard Taft. The President wept when it was confirmed that Butt and Frank Millet, the “artist friend who lives with me,” had died when the Titanic cast its passengers into the icy Atlantic Ocean. When Bob dropped off the book, Voyagers of the Titanic, and the research he had done on housemates Butt and Millet, who had nearby but separate rooms on the doomed ship, he, Ray, and I reminisced about Bob’s time in Washington, and the night he had Harvey Milk’s ashes in his closet. Lenny Matlovich, who was staying with Bob, wanted them buried in the historic Congressional Cemetery near Capitol Hill. That same morning, I had two lesbian neighbors and their friend in a small boat, slowly touring the canals of Ft. Lauderdale. I explained that I was a bit late because Bob had dropped off materials he thought might make a good column. I asked one of the women, a lesbian in her early forties, if she knew who Bob Bauman was. “No,” she said. I explained that he was the conservative, Republican congressman from Maryland who lost re-election because he was “outed” in 1980. It was really big news in the national press, but my neighbor would have been only 10 at the time. My guess is that my lesbian shipmates and their visiting guest from Ohio would have known the name “Harvey Milk” because of the recent award-winning film about him, but not the name Lenny Matlovich, whose face was on the September 8, 1975 Time magazine cover with the headline, “I am a Homosexual.” It was the first time any national periodical featured a gay person. Leonard was discharged from the U.S. Air Force for being gay, and was as famous as Harvey Milk as a gay activist in the 1970s. His tombstone epitaph is, “When I was in the military, they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one.” My friend Bruce Presley, who spent his life creating textbooks, and is now creating educational videos, wants to capture on film for the Stonewall National Museum all of the LGBT civil rights pioneers who are still living. He, and many from our generation, fears that younger people have no awareness of
Lieutenant Archibald Butt what life was like for those of us who fought the battle for equality. Recently, when Bruce was speaking to a college audience about the conditions endured by gay people when he was in school, a lesbian student announced, “I wouldn’t have put up with that!” Indeed. If Bruce had been alive in 1912, and had the ability to interview Major Archibald Butt, and his lover, Frank Millet, what a story might he have been able to save for us, so that YouTube- and Facebook-oriented young people might know about the lives of those who paved the way for zero-tolerance policies on bullying in schools, marriage equality, and the end of sexual orientation discrimination in the military? It may be that Butt and Millet would not have agreed to be on camera. Though they shared a home, and were constant companions, despite Millet being married, no one spoke at the time of them being “lovers,” only of their great affection. But if they had agreed to be videotaped, we might have heard Major Butt disclose that the only argument the two of them ever had was over the rose wallpaper in their bedroom. Each man was considered manly and attractive, and each had achieved notable success in their careers. It’s likely that Butt accompanied President Taft when he sailed into Provincetown, Mass. to dedicate the completion of the Pilgrim Monument. He may have done the same with President Teddy Roosevelt, with whom he also worked, when Roosevelt came to Provincetown for the laying of the cornerstone of the monument in 1907. Butt and Millet would have had lots of sto-

Francis Davis Millet he met at a bus station in Washington. There are stories of Butt’s heroism on the Titanic, acting as an officer to help women and children into the lifeboats. One woman,
who had given music lessons to the Roosevelt children, recalled Butt tucking a blanket around her. Butt was seen standing at the railing when the ocean liner sank swiftly, killing 1,517 passengers and crew. It was assumed that Millet was standing with him. When news of Butt’s death reached the White House, one reporter wrote, “…the name of Maj. Archie Butt, once synonymous of laughter and jest, now symbolic of heroism, was repeated while eyes blurred and voices became queerly strained.” Shortly thereafter, by joint resolution of congress, a memorial fountain was erected on Executive Ave. in Washington, D.C., and named the Butt-Millet Fountain. If young gay high school boys, on a field trip to the nation’s capital, knew these names in advance of their travel, they might stop at the fountain and feel more at home. But unless we make the effort to learn and tell the stories, no LGBT youth will know the names or the heroic stories of Archibald Butt, Frank Millet, Bob Bauman, Lenny Matlovich, or even Harvey Milk. Brian McNaught was named “the godfather of gay diversity training” by The New York Times. He works with corporate executives globally, is the author of six books, and is featured in seven educational DVDs. He and his spouse Ray Struble divide their year between Fort Lauderdale and Provincetown. Visit Brian-McNaught.com for more information.

Bright and Bootiful Future for the Pride Center By Tony Adams
“I
let it be known that the staff should feel free to greet my return to the center by singing ‘Hello Dolly,” said Robert Boo. Only a Broadway show queen with a heart for people, a head for management and a long resume of success could pull off a line like that. Robert Boo is that kind of guy, and the Pride Center of South Florida is fortunate that he has returned as its new executive director. Boo had been the center’s director of development for five years before being lured back to his earlier career in corporate management. When the center’s Paul Hyman left in March to become the director of New York City’s Stonewall Community Foundation, replacing him with a man who had a big part in the successful move of the center into its expansive Wilton Manors campus meant a seamless transition. With a personality as buoyant and lighthearted as a bunch of party balloons, Boo’s casual and confident manner is a refreshing surprise. He has navigated his life with a mixture of vision, skill and success that often makes a man like him reserved and also inaccessible to LGBT organizations that cannot afford that level of leadership. He grew up in a rural northern Indiana town of corn and soybean farmers. “The population was 2,000 if you included the mental hospital,” he says. He knew from an early age that small town ways would never be his. “I was attracted to the other boys in my class. I’d give you their names, but they’re still there. I went from a high school senior class of 45 to a Purdue college class of 2,000. That is where I had my first gay experience. The

I felt like Shirley MacLaine floating outside my body and watching what he was doing to me. I was so scared by the whole experience that I went back into the closet for two years,” he says. Boo’s description of his work life is a lesson in location strategy. After eight years in Chicago, he learned the power of whining and cajoling his employers to move him to the cities that attracted him, including Miami Beach and New Orleans. A stint in San Diego left him without much love for the west coast. His heart was in South Florida. Boo recalls, “Right after college where I studied institutional management, Aramark
hired me, and then their competitor Sodexo hired me, and eventually Aramark lured me back with the right offer—Fort Lauderdale. I had decided never to spend another winter north of the Mason-Dixon. That was nine years ago. A few years in, I had my midlife crisis, and I knew there had to be more to life than saving millions of dollars for these large corporations. Still, it took my friend Paul Hyman five months to convince me to become director of development at the old Pride Center. It was a mess. I joined Paul’s team because he had this dream of building a new center. Paul had come into a failing organization and worked hard to transform it. His team accomplished so much in my five years there.
Who knew that this little organization would be able to buy this five-acre campus? There were other developers that wanted the site but couldn’t put it together. Northern Trust stepped up to help us. They were the only bank that stuck with us and gave us the financing. In addition to growing the already impressive list of programs at the center, Boo has very specific plans in one area. “We need to get more women involved in the center. We just launched our ‘Women With Pride’ initiative in conjunction with ‘Women-In-Network.’ Over 150 came to the kick-off. When we used to be called the GLCC, I used to say we needed to put the L back into it. One of my top priorities is to make sure women feel welcomed here. Four years ago we had a dream to get out of Andrews Avenue. Now I have a new dream. Right now we have one office dedicated to women, why not have one whole building dedicated to services for women?” The general consensus is that Boo can accomplish this and any other goal he sets for the Pride Center. When asked about his unusual last name, he says, “It’s Swedish and no, it’s not an Ellis Island shortening of something like Boorstein. My friends call me Boo. In New Orleans, it’s a term of endearment. Whenever I heard people say ‘Hey Boo.’ I used to think they were talking to me.” At the Pride Center, ‘Boo’ is very definitely a term of endearment, and given the 51-year-old’s emphatic promise to stay put in the place he calls home, he will be our ‘Boo’ for a long time to come. Robert Boo encourages you to tour the Pride Center at 2040 N. Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors. Call 954 463-9005 or visit GLCCsf.org for more information.

Gay Men with Cancer: Sometimes a Forgotten Lot By Gideon Grudo
I
t was 2008, and Vinny Savinetti had just been diagnosed with bladder cancer. He was self-employed and had enough cash to take care of himself, but was having a hard time finding the help he needed. That is, until he came across Gilda’s Club, a cancer support club which sponsors the Gay Men’s Networking Group. “When I started looking around for information for help, for what to do, all I got was ‘call this 800 number and call that 800 number,’” Savinetti said. “At Gilda’s Club — they were the first ones to invite me over.” He contacted Gilda’s at the advice of a neighbor, and hasn’t looked back since. After an intake session and a new member meeting, Savinetti began attending the gay men’s networking group, giving him the freedom to finally tackle some of the less-obvious issues related to cancer. He was really “pissed off” over what cancer societies told him. “They’ll help with certain kinds of cancers — they’ll medicate you for pain,” he said. “American Cancer Society sent me pretty lit-
tle folders to put my bills in, and brochures on how to deal with cancer. All they do is raise money for research, but aren’t doing anything for the people living with it now.” He went to his first meeting on a Sunday, not wanting to wait, having become so depraved of attention and hungry for a solid conversation about what he was going through. “Your friends only want to hear so much, and you can’t burn out your family,” Savinetti said. With time, he found others who had the same cancer as his. “It’s a good place to let what you can’t usually let out someplace else,” Savinetti said. “If you were a gay man with cancer, there’s almost no place to go, but if you’re a gay man with HIV, you get flowers.” He thinks it’s wonderful that there’s so much help for men with HIV, but found there’s not nearly as much offered to gay men with cancer, and that there’s “zero help for you in the gay community.” That’s where Gilda’s Club steps in. Sam Budyszewick, Gilda’s program direc-
“My body isn’t the same as it was before all of this,” Savinetti said about his sexual problems, bowel problems, skin issues and incontinence, just to name a few. “In the gay men’s group, you can discuss these things without offending anyone.” It’s the freedom to talk about these issues that makes the group unique, especially since it’s a venue for gay men to talk. “We can talk about gay issues — about how cancer affects us sexually, socially. Gay life is built for the young,” Savinetti said. “You take away a gay man’s sexuality, and it’s a bullet to the brain. Some people can’t handle it.” Some of the men have been battling cancer for years, others are in remission, and yet others have had operations and are living with the side effects. One common denominator with them all Savinetti says is that they all wonder, “’What do I do with my life now?’” It’s always the ‘What if’? You never know if it’s going to rear its ugly head again.” Savinetti’s advice to men who’re going through cancer: “Call Gilda’s immediately and get into a new members’ meeting. It’s going to make you know you’re not alone. You don’t have to go through this alone,” he said, before repeating: “You don’t have to go through this alone.”
tor, facilitates the Gay Men’s Networking Group. Gilda’s Club was founded in 1994 to provide an outlet to those facing cancer. More than 3,000 adults and 500 children belong to the organization. The club offers more than 60 support groups, workshops, lectures and social activities. The Gay Men’s Networking Group is just one of those, and meets on the second Monday of every month at 5 p.m. The point of the group is to provide mutual support, education and a social aspect to the issues gay men with cancer face. Most importantly though, the group is there to reinforce the notion that no one has to go through cancer alone. “We’re really empowering our members,” he said. “There’s a comfort level to be with people who’re going through the same thing.” And it’s a good thing they do. Budyszewick said there are a lot of resources for caner patients and survivors in the gay community, but they’re sometimes scattered and hard to find. “Unfortunately,” he said, “Gilda’s becomes a great and well-kept secret.” Even though Savinetti had his bladder was removed in 2009 he still attends meetings. He’s now a survivor and still must deal with the after effects of his surgery and treatments. He gets tested every three months. The chemo and the removal of the bladder took a toll on his body.

ne Million Moms is once again calling for a boycott of J.C. Penney because of their affiliation with lesbians. In February they called for a boycott after the company announced that Ellen DeGeneres would be their new spokesperson. Now they’re upset with the retailer for featuring a lesbian couple in their May catalog. “JC Penney has laid low in the month of April by airing two different commercials that portrayed them as remaining neutral in the cultural war. Even though JCP seemed to have changed their approach, their May catalog shows they are making a strong effort otherwise,” the organization writes on their website. “On pages ten and eleven, under the title “Freedom of Expression,” you’ll find “Wendi and her partner Maggie and daughters” and again “Wendi, daughters Raven and Clover, and partner Maggie” in text. In the picture both women are wearing wedding bands.” The organization is asking for their members to contact local store managers to ask them “to tell corporate that they should remain neutral in the cultural war.” This isn’t the only catalog that’s gotten the
group upset recently either. The April catalog from Urban Outfitters featured two women kissing. “The April 2012 catalog from Urban Outfitters has begun arriving in home mailboxes the last couple of days,” OMM wrote. “On page two of this catalog is a picture of two women kissing in a face holding embrace! The ad and catalog are clearly geared toward teenagers. The content is offensive and inappropriate for a teen who is the company’s target customer.” Earlier this year when DeGeneres was named J.C. Penney’s spokesperson OMM wrote: “By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these year… The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer show there.” In response DeGeneres thanked J.C. Penney on her show for sticking behind her. “This organization doesn’t think I should be the spokesperson because I’m gay. For

J.C. Penney saved those of you just tuning in I’m gay,” she joked on television. “First of all being gay or being pro gay is not a band wagon. You don’t get a free ride anywhere. There’s no music.” She continued: “For a group that calls themselves ‘Million Moms’ they only have 40,000 members on their [Facebook] page…so they’re rounding to the nearest million and I get that. She continued more seriously saying, “Here are the values that I stand for: honesty, equality, compassion. To me those are traditional values and that’s what I stand for.” The group’s Facebook page now has 46,000 “likes.” In comparison, fans of DeGeneres

created their own page “1 Million people who support Ellen for JC Penney” which so far has garnered 204,691 “likes.” During the controversy DeGeneres even received support from some unlikely people including Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. OMM admits the boycott over DeGeneres was a failure. “OMM has so many issues to cover we had no choice but to move on earlier in the year but have decided to revisit this issue and speak out again. It is obvious that JCP would rather take sides than remain neutral. JCP will hear from the other side so they need to hear from us as well,” the organization wrote. “Last time OMM contacted JC Penney store managers, we were brushed off. Some even experienced in person the store manager saying, “thank you,” and walking off while their customer and our concerned members were in mid-sentence. OMM has been told that JCP corporate office told store managers to say “thank you” and then walk away. If they want our business, then we will not be ignored!” Apparently J.C. Penney doesn’t care what OMM has to say. OMM writes that J.C. Penney has blocked emails from its servers. OMM is a project of the American Family Association, a group well known for its antigay views and rhetoric.

The Harvey Milk Foundation Nephew carries uncle’s legacy

ntil his now famous uncle’s untimely assassination in 1978, Stuart Milk was a teen-ager who, though still closeted, had a unique connection with his uncle Harvey. At the time, Harvey Milk was the first openly gay person elected to San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors — and only the fifth openly gay person elected to public office in the nation. He was also one of the few people in the family that, despite knowing about his nephew’s still private homosexuality, spoke to him about what it meant to be different and how difference could bring about positive change, despite the inherent challenges it presented. Fast forward 22 years to 1999 and — well before the 2008 blockbuster starring Sean Penn made Harvey Milk a household name — Stuart Milk decided to pick up where his uncle had left off. It was then that he formed the Harvey Milk Foundation, a not for profit organization that, according to its website, aims not just to educate the world on the plight of the LGBT population, but takes this concept further extending it to any “gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, racial and ethnic minorities…” with the goal of giving them the right of full societal involvement and recognition. Now 13 years since its inception, the Harvey Milk Foundation continues to extend its message not just in the U.S., but throughout the world. As [Stuart] Milk exclaims, “It’s not a U.S. or San Francisco problem. Harvey Milk with President Jimmy Carter
Hate and bigotry doesn’t get stopped by a body of water or the Himalayas.” Milk, who worked a full time job in the private sector until recently, admits that “addressing the fact that hatred and oppression is not acceptable in any part of the world” is, and has been a full time job, since the foundation’s beginnings. He takes no pay and is also far from short on frequent flyer miles. “I’ve traveled to at least 50 countries and spoken with at least 200,000 people throughout the world,” he says. “And we’re making progress, but there is still so much to be done.” Speaking to the SFGN, Milk’s magnetism is undeniable and his knowledge seemingly unending. The gleam in his eyes, pupils wide with excitement as he speaks while sipping his Starbucks coffee, only affirms the words of Fort Lauderdale attorney Norm Kent who summed up Milk by stating, “The great thing about Stuart is that, despite so many people with iconic, deceased family members, Stuart actually took the chance to not just continue his uncle’s message, but to take it to a whole new level rather than just letting it die out or become part of the history books.” And indeed, history plays an even deeper role in this story than Kent suggests. When he decided to start the foundation in 1999, it was during the festivities for the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award. He was accepting the award — the highest civilian honor given for societal contribution — on behalf of his uncle Harvey. And it was here that, as Milk recalls, a conversation with a fellow recipient led to the birth of what is now the HMF.
Stuart Milk with President Barack Obama

That fellow recipient was none other than Desmond Tutu, and his message to Milk was clear. “He challenged me to do more,” Milk says, nonchalantly rehashing his conversation with the world-famous anti-apartheid figurehead and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Nonetheless, he got the point. Milk immediately linked up with Anne Kronenburg, a long time Milk family friend and fellow activist who had worked for Harvey Milk’s San Francisco campaign. There and then they decided to co-found the organization and the Harvey Milk Foundation (HMF) was officially started. Since then, Milk hasn’t looked back enduring a seemingly unending travel schedule and, admittedly putting himself in harm’s way to work not only to change the future, but to speak about it through the lens of both the past and present, with education being at the forefront of the foundation’s objectives. Overseas, he travels to countries where he “has to look over his shoulder,” advocating for unity amongst minorities of all types. In 2011, according to the HMF Website, he joined Czech tennis star Martina Navratilova to successfully boycott the Czech government’s banning of a national Czech PrideFest; in Hungary, Milk and supporters marched against thousands of Neo Nazi’s in Budapest to help the LGBT community to show their Pride despite violent protest; in the Middle East, Milk has held talks in Istanbul and other countries – through their consulates or in person – to counter the region’s brutality and “hate speech” directed at sex-

Coffee and Comedy Served Up by Thinking Cap Theatre By J.W. Arnold
A
fter bringing audiences to tears with a critically-acclaimed production of Sarah Kane’s disturbing commentary on intimacy, Cleansed, Nicole Stodard and her Thinking Cap Theatre are doing an about face. The company opens its latest show, Love Burns, two one-act comedies by Cherie Vogelstein at Fort Lauderdale’s Empire Stage, with a preview on Thursday, May 10 and opening night, Friday, May 11. “Reactions were all over the map,” Stodard says of Cleansed. “Our audiences left crying and emotional, others were stunned, some just didn’t get it.” The company made a conscious decision to offer the comedies as a result: “You can do Cleansed show after show, but it’s very heavy on the soul,” she explains. Vogesang’s plays, Date with a Stranger and All About Al, both take place in a New York coffee shop. Stodard saw the opportunity to create an experience for audiences, trans-

forming Empire Stage’s intimate space into a coffee shop. And in keeping with the company’s “Plays with a Bite” theme, during intermission audiences can purchase espressos and pastries right on stage, thanks to an arrangement with a local vendor. Audiences will get another treat, performances by Mark Della Ventura and David Michael Sirois, both accomplished local actors and playwrights known for their work with Alliance Theatre Lab in Miami-Dade. “With all of the theaters that are closing up lately, we felt it would be good to have some cross-pollination,” says Stodard. “(Mark and David) wanted to work outside of their company and we share a philosophy about what theater can be. We’re keeping it fresh.” In addition to Love Burns, Thinking Cap is also producing Radio Plays at Empire Stage, a series of radio scripts from the golden age of radio, including material from Fibber Magee & Molly, The Bickersons and Burns and Allen, performed by the Imagination Players
L to R, Mark Della Ventura, Ashley Price, & David Michael Sirois in Date With a Stranger by Cherie Vogelstein with voices and sound effects faithful to the original works. This show, which will run Saturday afternoons and Sunday evenings and alternating with Love Burns, was the brainchild of Thinking Cap company member Elayne Wilks, and is expected to be a hit with audiences who seek the nostalgia of an era before IMAX and giant flat screen televisions, when listeners had to visualize the action themselves. Popular local actress Kitt Marsh directs the four-person company, including Wilks, Berry and Fern Katz and Jerry Weinberg. So, after tackling the challenging works of Sarah Kane and then offering experiential comedy, where does Thinking Cap go next? Stodard has a plan. She expects to turn to “restoration comedy” and the works of Aphra Behn. Behn is not a household name, but rather the first woman to make a living as a playwright in 17th-century England. “Most people think of Virginia Woolf as the first, but Behn really was there first,”
Stodard says. “In her time period, that’s when actresses could take parts for the first time.” Behn’s work is certainly heavily female centered, but not feminist by contemporary standards, but Stodard says the exercise will help her young company continue to push boundaries while offering compelling stories. She says, “We don’t do risky theater just for the sake of risky theater.”
Love Burns by Cherie Vogelsang Thursdays – Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 7 p.m. through May 26. Tickets $25
Radio Plays Wednesdays at 2 and 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. Through May 26. Tickets $15 Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler St., Fort Lauderdale Cash only at the door For more information, go to ThinkingCapTheatre.com

The Perfect Family By J.W. Arnold

ileen Cleary leads a highly structured, faithful routine and the local Catholic Church is the cornerstone of her life. On a daily basis, she prepares and delivers meals to the homebound, attends mass and confesses even the tiniest slight like, “I used the Lord’s name in vain once yesterday.” Her world is one of moral certainty, black and white. But when she is nominated for the church’s highest award, Catholic Woman of the Year, Eileen is forced to acknowledge that her life has been anything but certain and her family hardly the picture of perfection she insists. Portrayed by Kathleen Turner, Eileen is no “Mommie Dearest,” but a real woman who must reconcile blind obedience to the teachings of her church with the realities of modern family life. Her husband, Frank (Michael McGrady), is a recovering alcoholic who, early in
their marriage, took to womanizing during his drunken binges. Daughter Shannon (Emily Deschanel) is a lesbian planning to have a baby with her partner. Son Frank Jr. (Jason Ritter) has left his wife and two sons to pursue a relationship with a local manicurist. For years, Eileen has simply chosen to ignore these issues, until her nomination requires a home visit from the bishop and letters of recommendation from her family members. When Shannon confronts her mother about her nuptials and pregnancy, Eileen finally acknowledges her knowing disapproval. It’s morally wrong, Eileen says because the Pope has said so.When Shannon demands to know what her mother thinks, Eileen responds, “I don’t have to think, I’m a Catholic!” Ironically, the prize Eileen covets is a prayer of absolution delivered to the winner by the visiting bishop of Dublin, which we learn is not so much about her family’s redemption, but Eileen’s own, revealed in a shocking confession late in the film. Richard Chamberlain delivers a refreshing performance as Monsignor Murphy, the parish priest who clearly admires Eileen’s devotion, but also senses the hidden turmoil she keeps bottled up. Writers Paula Goldberg and Claire Riley provide a script that is predictable at times, for instance, the drunken arrival of Frank Jr. just minutes before the bishop’s visit. But,

Kathleen Turner in “The Perfect Family” they know their characters, weaving smart, sarcastic commentary on religion throughout, and leading Eileen to an eventual epiphany. Director Anne Renton avoids the urge to veer toward the flavor of silly comedy that has made television shows like Modern Family so popular, even though the sitcom family is not really so different from the Clearys. For those of us who grew up in religious families, especially in the Bible Belt, the
struggle Eileen faces at once seems familiar. When she finally reconciles her faith with family, they are all freed.

HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING: INTENSE CARDIO THAT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE Q: I have a friend who has lost massive amounts of fat doing High Intensity Interval Training. What exactly is this and will it work for me? I’m 36, 6’, 175, about 9% body fat. A: High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a form of cardiovascular exercise performed in a short period at an intense rate, followed by a less intense recovery period and repeated multiple times during the same session. Yes, it has its benefits which include accelerated fat loss and cardio conditioning, but it can be a grueling workout and isn’t for everybody. Given your stats (six feet tall and 175 lbs. with only 9% body fat), HIIT certainly isn’t the program I would prescribe for you if your goals are to build muscle. EXAMPLE: For an individual wanting to try HIIT on a treadmill, I would have him warm-up at a comfortable but brisk intensity for 5 minutes. Then I’d have him sprint at full intensity, no-holds-barred, for 45 seconds to a minute. For the next two minutes during the “recovery” phase, he would jog at a comfortable pace. We would then repeat this pattern of sprint and recovery about 6 to 10 times and finish it off with a cool-down. The total workout should take 15-20 minutes. The benefits of this type of training are numerous. The major one is improved oxygen uptake or EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption). In very basic terms, this means you will be consuming a lot more oxygen for the next 24 hours, raising your metabolism and, in turn, burning more fat. The other big benefit to HIIT is that it works both the aerobic and the anaerobic system. Exercise physiologist Elizabeth Quinn explains it this way: “During the high intensity efforts, the anaerobic system uses the energy stored in the muscles (glycogen) for short bursts of activity. Anaerobic metabolism works without oxygen, but the by-product is lactic acid. As lactic acid builds, the athlete enters oxygen debt, and it is during the recovery phase that the heart and lungs work together to “pay back” this oxygen debt and break down the lactic acid. It is in this phase that the aerobic system is using oxygen to convert stored carbohydrates into energy. It’s thought that by performing high intensity intervals that produce lactic acid during practice, the body adapts and burns lactic acid more efficiently during exercise. This means athletes can exercise at a higher intensity for a longer period of time before fatigue or pain slows them down.” The next time you spend time on a treadmill, try a pre-

programmed interval training set and see for yourself if this type of training is for you.
TIP OF THE WEEK
THE POWER OF VITAMIN D Vitamin D was considered so vital to building strong bones that in the 1930s the U.S. government mandated that milk be fortified with it. This amazing vitamin, which works to increase the absorption of calcium from foods and supplements, has been found in more recent studies to play a vital role in defending the body against a host of illnesses including colds, heart disease, asthma, diabetes and cancer.
People over 50 tend to be at greatest risk for vitamin D deficiencies often resulting in osteoporosis. More recently, a high percentage of HIV+ individuals have been found to have vitamin D deficiencies. Experts recommend beginning a vitamin D supplement regimen by taking 1,000 IU per 25 pounds of body weight. Consult with your doctor or registered dietitian before any type of supplementation. EXERCISE OF THE WEEK EZ-BAR BICEPS CURL Barry Gamez demonstrates the EZ-Bar Biceps Curl . Photography by TobysPhotos.com.
➊ This
➋
is a basic arm exercise that targets
the biceps brachii but, surprisingly, many guys skip this exercise or perform it incorrectly.
1) Grab an EZ-Bar with an underhand (palms up) grip at shoulder width. Your feet should also be shoulder-width apart with your shoulders back. Allow the bar to hang in front of your waist. 2) Without
moving your upper arms , curl
the bar upward towards your chin.
3) Lower
the bar
SLOWLY
to the
starting position until your arms are completely straight.
ALERT: Many guys get into a swinging motion and/or curl and lower the bar too quickly. Your torso and upper arms should be still throughout the exercise .
The
major benefit to this exercise
occurs when you are lowering the weight, so perform that portion of the exercise slowly.
