ltra-conservative radio talk show host Linda Harvey has slammed Halloween, and of course, she couldn’t pass on the opportunity to bash gays as well. Urging people to skip Halloween, the antigay pundit says the celebration is particularly popular in the LGBT community because of its Satanic origins,Right Wing Watch reports. She starts off: “Most Christians with a sincere faith acknowledge that there is a demonic realm and that Satan and his minions are at work in the world to deceive humans, so why wouldn’t Halloween provide an extremely useful tool.” Then Harvey goes on to say that it is for this very same reason that gays love it. “We all can see it’s a huge celebration in the LGBT world, especially for the genderconfused folks. This illustrates some of the problem. The core of Halloween is glittering artificiality, you can pretend to be someone you aren’t for a night, you can flirt with danger, you can divine a different destiny, but it is all void of the presence of or will of God. “It’s a seduction that says, ‘don’t be afraid, do whatever you want, there’s nothing to fear,’ it’s one of Satan’s oldest tricks.” Harvey is no stranger to homophobic slurs. t seems like Chick-fil-A is playing up its proud anti-gay stance on a new series of ads. Gay news blog Towleroad posted a photo of fliers being distributed at Chick-fil-A locations in the Atlanta, Ga. area for partysize chicken trays. A flyer reportedly posted on one of the fried chicken restaurants in Chamblee, Ga. shows a photo of the tray and reads: “Only a fruitcake wouldn’t love our party trays.” According to Towleroad, the image was sent to them via Twitter. Despite the “coincidental” gay innuendo of the ad, Chickfil-A Executive Vice President Steve Robinson told The Advocate that the locally owned and operated restaurants has been using the ad for the past five years during the holidays. Chick-fil-A was at the center of a media firestorm this past summer when the company’s COO, Dan Cathy, told the Baptist Press he was “guilty as charged” for donating millions to anti-gay companies.

Anne Hathaway Donates Her Wedding Money for Gay Marriage

H

ollywood star and LGBT ally Anne Hathaway is bringing some hardcore support to the fight for equal rights: She has promised to donate money from the sales of her wedding photos to LGBT nonprofits. The Catwoman actress, who’s set to star in the next adaptation of Les Misérables, will be splitting the proceeds between Freedom to Marry and other charities, including the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and The Girl Effect, according to Adam Polaski at Freedom to Marry. The donation, says Polaski, is the “latest way that Hathaway has taken a stand for the freedom to marry. In 2008, she talked publicly for the first time about her brother, who is gay, and explained that their relationship has compelled her to advocate as an ally to the LGBT community.” That same year, Hathaway received the Human Rights Campaign Ally Award for her support of the LGBT community. “I don’t consider myself just an ally to the LGBT community, I consider myself your

family. And so, I’m doing what we should all do with our families — I’m loving you, I support you, I completely accept you as you are, as I hope you do me, and if anyone ever tries to hurt you, I’m going to give them hell,” she said in a passionate speech when she received the award.

Swedish Court Rejects Trans Rape Acquittal

A

man in Sweden was sentenced to 15 months in jail for the attempted rape of a transgender woman who had to appeal the case to get the conviction. Last summer, a 61-year-old man beat up and tried to rape a transgender woman; he was later acquitted because the court decided the allegations were “invalid,” according to Sweden’s The Local. “The intended crime never had the possibility of being fulfilled,” said Judge Dan Sjöstedt at the time of the acquittal in July. After the victim appealed the case a district court still found that “the rape could never have been fully consummated because the victim was still physically a man,” but charged the man with attempted rape. “It’s a relief to get a conviction; the punishment is in line with what I had asked for,” prosecutor Eva Grandestedt said. “This ruling shows that you can get convicted for attempted rape regardless of the gender identity of the victim.”

Students Outed by Facebook

F

acebook is known to be a gay-friendly company and has recently made efforts to be more LGBT inclusive, but a loophole in the social network’s privacy settings is causing problems for some people who remain closeted. The Wall Street Journal reports that two gay students from the University of Texas in Austin were outed to their parents when the president of their Queer Chorus group added them to the chorus’ Facebook page last fall. “I felt like someone had hit me in the stomach with a bat,” 22-year-old Bobbi Duncan told WSJ after her father found out about it. Despite Facebook’s updates to its privacy settings, like being asked for approval when a person is tagged on someone else’s photo, anyone can be added to a Facebook group by a friend without prior approval. After being added to the group, the notification went out to every one of Duncan’s Facebook friends. To make matter’s worse, when her father found out she was a lesbian, he went on Facebook and left a nasty comment: “To all you queers. Go back to your holes and wait for GOD. Hell awaits you pervert. Good luck singing there.” Taylor McCormick, another chorus member, was also outed due to the same

8

privacy loophole. For its part, a Facebook spokesman issued the following statement to WSJ: “Our hearts go out to these young people. Their unfortunate experience reminds us that we must continue our work to empower and educate users about our robust privacy controls.” Back in July, Facebook rolled out new marriage icons for same-sex couples to update their “married” status on their timeline rather than having to put up with using the marriage icon for straight married couples.

Lesbians Attacked at Pride

A

lesbian couple was beaten up during Atlanta’s Gay Pride celebration— the worst part was that bystanders watch the incident unfold and didn’t do anything, they told Fox 5 News. “Everyone was sitting there watching it and that’s just what blows my mind,” said Brooke Creef. Her girlfriend, Kathryn Katalinich said they were about to hop in a cab on Oct. 13 when two men started saying homophobic slurs directed at them. When they tried to defend themselves the two men attacked them. Katalinich recounts:“He throws me down on the ground, busts my knees up and I get up and he does it again a second time and is laughing,” said Katalinich. “He picked me up and threw me back down.” After the attack the two men ran away. The lesbian couple are hoping the incident was caught by surveillance cameras.

our favorite gay porn stars will likely vote for Obama; that’s what a new survey among pornographers indicates. The survey, done by adult news website Xbiz.com, has porn makers favoring Obama by a margin of 69 percent to 13 percent. Adult industry members were asked: “Which candidate would you like elected U.S. President?” The results come in part due to Romney’s addition to his political platform of a “vigorous” enforcement of pornography and obscenity laws, according to Huffington Post. “The results aren’t really surprising because most people involved with the adult industry have a liberal view of government and how it should work,” Steven Hirsch, CEO of porn film company Vivid Entertainment, told Xbiz..

New York Says DOMA Unconstitutional Federal Appeals Court strikes it down By Larry Neumeister, Associated Press

S

aying the gay population has “suffered a history of discrimination,” a divided federal appeals court in Manhattan ruled Thursday that a federal law defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman was unconstitutional, adding fuel to an issue expected to reach the U.S. Supreme Court soon. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals seemed interested in adding its voice to several other rulings already at the high court’s doorstep by issuing its 2-to-1 decision only three weeks after hearing arguments on a lower court judge’s findings that the 1996 law was unconstitutional. In a majority opinion written by Judge Dennis Jacobs, the 2nd Circuit, like a federal appeals court in Boston before it, found no reason the Defense of Marriage Act could be used to deny benefits to married gay couples. It supported a lower court ruling after a woman sued the government in 2010, saying the law required her to pay $363,053 in federal estate tax after her partner of 44 years died. Jacobs, though, went beyond the Boston court, saying discrimination against gays should be scrutinized by the courts in the same heightened way as discrimination faced by women was in the 1970s. At the time, he noted, they faced widespread discrimination in the workplace and elsewhere. The heightened scrutiny, as it is referred to in legal circles, would mean government discrimination against gays would be assumed to be unconstitutional. “The question is not whether homosexuals have achieved political successes over the years; they clearly have. The question is whether they have the strength to politically protect themselves from wrongful discrimination,” said Jacobs, who was appointed to the bench in 1992 by President George H.W. Bush. He said it was difficult to say whether gays were under-represented in positions of power and authority without knowing their true numbers. “But it is safe to say that the seemingly small number of acknowledged homosexuals so situated is attributable either to a hostility that excludes them or to a hostility that keeps their sexual preference private – which, for our purposes, amounts to much the same thing,” Jacobs said.

10

Lawyer Paul Clement, who had argued in support of the law on behalf of the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group of the House of Representatives, was traveling and did not immediately return a message seeking comment. Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, which filed arguments with the appeals court before the ruling, called the decision “yet another example of judicial activism and elite judges imposing their views on the American people.”

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said the decision echoed testimony before his committee that showed the law “has damaging effects on the lives of thousands of American families who are denied the same federal protections as millions of other Americans.” The 2nd Circuit said the law’s “classification of same-sex spouses was not substantially related to an important government interest” and thus violated the equal protection clause of the Constitution. “It is easy to conclude that homosexuals have suffered a history of discrimination,”

senate judiciary committee chairman sen. patrick leahy, d-vt.

He urged the Supreme Court to take up the case, saying: “The American people are entitled to a definitive ruling in support of marriage as the union of one man and one woman, as 32 states have determined through popular vote.” Dale Schowengerdt, an attorney with the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Alliance Defending Freedom, called the ruling “off base” and predicted the Supreme Court will disagree with it. James Esseks, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, called the ruling “a watershed moment in the legal movement for lesbian and gay rights.” “It’s fabulous news for same-sex couples in New York and other states,” he said. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman

Jacobs said, noting that for many years in many states, homosexual conduct was criminal and that even the law’s supporters acknowledge that gays endured discrimination since at least the 1920s. He said the law was written so broadly that it touches more than a thousand federal laws. “Homosexuals are not in a position to adequately protect themselves from the discriminatory wishes of the majoritarian public,” Jacobs wrote. He rejected arguments by supporters of the law that it was intended to limit new categories of eligibility for federal funds, promote uniform administration of federal law, protect traditional marriage and encourage responsible procreation. “Even if preserving tradition were in itself

an important goal, DOMA is not a means to achieve it,” he said. Jacobs disputed arguments that samesex couples have a diminished ability to discharge family roles in procreation and the raising of children, saying the arguments were “inconsistent with actual cases.” And in a footnote, he said that to the extent the law’s supporters contend that “Congress’ laws might actually influence sexual orientation, there is no evidence to support that claim (and it strikes us as farfetched).” Judge Chester J. Straub dissented, saying that if the government was to change its understanding of marriage, “I believe it is for the American people to do so.” “Courts should not intervene where there is a robust political debate because doing so poisons the political well, imposing a destructive anti-majoritarian constitutional ruling on a vigorous debate,” he said. The ruling came in a case brought by Edith Windsor. She sued the government in November 2010 because she was told to pay $363,053 in federal estate tax after her partner of 44 years, Thea Spyer, died in 2009. They had married in Canada in 2007. “This law violated the fundamental American principle of fairness that we all cherish,” Windsor said in a statement. “I know Thea would have been so proud to see how far we have come in our fight to be treated with dignity.” The law, which denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages and affirms the right of states to refuse to recognize such marriages, was passed by bipartisan majorities in both houses of Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton after it appeared in 1993 that Hawaii might legalize gay marriage. Since then, many states have banned gay marriage but several have approved it, including Massachusetts and New York. The government defended the federal law until President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder in early 2011 directed attorneys to stop doing so. A government lawyer told the 2nd Circuit that the administration reviewed the law and concluded that it deserved a stricter view of what constituted discrimination than the legal reasoning that had previously been applied.

Office ‘cut a deal’ with the City of Boca Raton regarding the nondiscrimination language in County contracts. Please be assured that this allegation has absolutely no merit,” Neiman wrote to the Palm Beach County Board of Commissioners. “The City Attorney’s Office also advised that the City of Boca had opted out of the County’s Equal Employment Ordinance as it pertained to City employees. The City is entitled to do so by law. Due to this opt out, the County would not have jurisdiction over discrimination complaints by City employees against the City.” Meanwhile, the PBCHRC is pushing back against city officials’ recent comments about LGBT rights and the city’s denial of four public records request they recently made. They’ve retained the law offices of W. Trent Steele in order to force the city to comply with the state’s public records laws. On Oct. 19, they sent a letter to Boca’s city attorney giving the city one last chance before they file suit against the city. It appears that Boca Mayor Susan Whelchel is standing behind the city’s actions on LGBT rights. She went so far as to tell the Sun Sentinel that she doesn’t see this situation as a civil rights issue. “We follow state and federal laws — cities have the right to opt in or opt out as long as we follow the law,” she said. The Vice Mayor of Boca Susan Haynie stood by those sentiments as well telling the Sun Sentinel: “We feel very strong that ... it’s not necessary to impose the county’s rules on us.” The PBCHRC blasted Whelchel in a letter to her this weekend. The letter starts off with: “I am writing to explain why Ordinance 5161 is a matter of civil rights, since it appears from today’s article in the Sun-Sentinel, that you do not understand.”

it is possible that neither you nor your colleagues had any idea that by enacting the ordinance, you were completely eliminating the civil rights of the City’s gay, lesbian, and gender non-conforming employees, as well as restricting the rights of the City’s female and minority employees.” That very well could be the case since the Sun Sentinel noted that the Boca ordinance in question took a mere 1 minute and 38 seconds to unanimously pass in January 2011. However from Whelchel and Haynie’s recent statements it appears they knew exactly the impact that ordinance would have. The letter ends with demanding some action taken against Assistant City Manager Mike Woika for his comments to SFGN. “Putting it simply, Mr. Woika’s comments are not only ignorant, but also hurtful. There is no longstanding history of employment discrimination against pet owners. While PBCHRC is not calling for a public apology by Mr. Woika, it would seem appropriate for the City to take some disciplinary action in an attempt to assure the LGBT residents of Boca Raton – and our allies – that such callous and hurtful statements are not acceptable.” The letter concludes with “please be advised that long as Ordinance 5161 remains in effect, PBCHRC will move forward with our ‘Boca Bigots Run City Hall’ campaign.” Boca Raton held a meeting regarding these issues on Tuesday, Oct. 23, after SFGN’s Oct. 24 issue went to press. Check back on SFGN. com or SFGN’s Oct. 31 issue for updated

The PBCHRC does give some benefit of doubt to the Mayor and Vice Mayor. “I have reviewed the somewhat misleading January, 4, 2011 memorandum on Equal Employment Opportunity prepared by City Manager Leif Ahnell and Human Resources Director Mark Buckingham, which was included in the backup for the January 25, 2011 City Council meeting at which Ordinance 5161 was enacted. The memorandum makes no reference to “sexual orientation” “gender identity” or “gender expression.” Nor does it inform anyone that the civil rights of female and minority employees would be curtailed. Therefore,

Gay Sex Causes Alchoholism?

G

ay men find it impossible to stay sober. They relapse again and again. The reason is clear: sex. Sexual addiction. I am not suggesting that all gay men who claim that they are alcoholic are in fact sex addicts but most gay men who can’t stay sober cite sex as the primary reason for relapse. The simple fact of the matter is that most of the time, readily available anonymous hook ups quickly take the place of alcohol and drugs. When a sober man walks into the apartment of a super hot man doing crystal meth, sobriety is quickly flushed down the toilet along with HIV status. I hear the story over and over again. Yet, as a community, we think we can get away with this risky behavior. It is an arrogant vanity. Gay AA is a sad affair. I go periodically— mostly when I flee the super charged straight stag meetings because I find the straight, young newcomers too triggering. While many straight sober people create a new life with AA that involves abandoning bars and other locations that might lead to relapse, gay sober men often want a sober version of the life they had before, complete with dance parties, bars and gogo boys. Any reason to have a party will do—including the absurd “three-month anniversary.” Or, as one galling invitation I received said, “Help Joe S. celebrate his one-month anniversary.” Forgive me if I’m wrong but anniversaries are a yearly celebration. Many of these sober parties are indistinguishable from their non sober equivalent: scantily clad men line up for espresso machines manned by disco shortwearing super hot straight guys more used to shaking cocktails than dispensing coffee to gay guys jacked up on caffeine. Unable to attend drug-crazed gay circuit parties, many gay sober men in LA flock to the sober circuit parties, such as Hot ‘n Dry, which is held annually in Palm Springs. These events are more likely to take someone out than any other reason I’ve ever heard in gay AA. Yearly, after this event, bedraggled gay men turn up at meetings, their eyes blazing from excessive drug use, taking newcomer chips. Should I be surprised? After all, the Hot n’ Dry ticket salesman had assured me that it would be “a sex fest from the moment you arrive at the Ace Hotel.”

By Duncan Roy The absurd idea that we can behave like we have always behaved as long as we have a deluded and lackluster understanding of the 12 steps just doesn’t work. Two years ago, after I appeared on Sex Rehab With Dr. Drew, I suggested that within the gay community, we might have a sexual unmanageability problem and was flooded with vitriol. But that’s not going to stop me from sharing what I believe to be serious issues. The other serious issue within gay AA, in my opinion, is the resistance to God or a Higher Power. Most of my gay sponsees are understandably wary of God. The Christian God—the religious God— hasn’t made them feel very welcome in the past and has actually steeped them in shame and misery. To find that at the heart of AA is a God— even if it’s one of their own understanding—is anathema to most gay men. From what I can determine, most gay men just ignore the God part of the 12 steps—a relevant fact when the God part, in my estimation, accounts for roughly 90% of recovery. Working through the God options with gay men can be excruciating. Why bother looking for spiritual validation when they can get immediate validation on Grindr? I used to love AA in LA; my love for it was actually the reason I first moved to LA. Now I hate it. It’s like a cult—sober grandees ruling over desperate men, the film industry providing the sickest of backdrops: men flaying themselves before agents and film executives in the hope of catching crumbs from the sober table I see this everywhere from the straight stag meetings, where misogyny and homophobia are expressed freely, to the sickest meetings of all: Gay AA in LA. For all of these reasons and more, last November, after nearly 16 years, I stopped

going to AA meetings. I was exhausted, disillusioned and utterly miserable. My last meeting in LA, at the iconic Log Cabin on Robertson in West Hollywood, was a gay meeting attended by 300 gay men. I couldn’t walk away fast enough. And yet yesterday, after a nine-month hiatus, I walked into a co-ed meeting in Park Slope, Brooklyn. I was an hour early. I helped set out the chairs in ten neat rows and then I made the coffee. During the meeting, I shared my resentments and my fears and afterwards, a tiny woman called Dianne came up to me and let me have two full barrels of her tough love wisdom. “It’s time for you to get fucking humble,” she said. “Come back and do fucking 90 in

doubled down. I had once again fucked a newcomer, counting days. It’s my story in AA. The younger men find my honesty irresistible and I can’t say no. When I first got sober in London, the only gay men I met in AA were old queens at the Eton Square meeting. I met a couple of gay men in NA but within the deluded gay community, at that time, there was a mantra I heard over and over that “quitting was for losers.” Several years later, after celebrities like Boy George got sober, the rooms of AA and NA filled quickly with what we now recognize as gay recovery. Back then I was accused, by my drinking friends, of being a contrarian—of rocking the boat and spoiling it for the others. As it happened, I was in the vanguard. I remember being hounded by drunken gay men who were outraged that I might, just by being sober, challenge their powerlessness and unmanageability. Of course those very same men now thank me for introducing them to the 12 steps. After a few months away from AA, I am ready to start again but, as Dianne said, I’ve got to get humble, forget all those years of sobriety and do 90 meetings in 90 days. For the first time in a long time, I value my life. I should have left LA years ago but I’m a tenacious old queen; I didn’t want to let go. Just one more meeting might fix me. Just one more line, one more Vodka Tonic and the crazy opera playing in my head might stop. Walking back into AA in New York was a relief, a joy—just like it used to be. I want to be sober. The only problem getting in the way of that is me. But I know that if I’m going to be able to do it, I’ll have to learn how to say no to sex. As a single gay man, the consequences are dire if I don’t. Duncan Roy is a filmmaker whose movies include AKA, Method and The Picture of Dorian Gray. He appeared on Sex Rehab With Dr. Drew in 2009, and has written for The Sunday Times, The Evening Standard, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian, and The Daily Beast. Roger Ebert has praised his blog as “a moving and evocative chronicle of modern gay life.” This is his first piece for The Fix. Photo Courtesy of Christopher Schirner

90 like a newcomer.” She was right. After months away from AA, I felt spiritually bankrupt. I stopped fighting and did what we are all meant to in the rooms of AA: I gave in. Later that evening, the young man I helped set up the meeting took me for dinner. We talked recovery. This morning, we had sex. There I was, doing the walk of shame,

What will Romney do for LGBT?

suppose SFGN is trying to be fair and balanced by printing articles from the gay republicans point of view. That’s fine - you totally should. But here is the problem and it does not fall on just gay republicans but all republicans. No GOP person in print or otherwise has stated what Romney / Ryan will do for them. Sure they point out the general GOP basic philosophies of smaller government, less social programs, and a mighty military but none of them have stated how the Romney / Ryan team will get them there. There are two very important reasons why: The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

1. It would sound really terrible to most Americans 2. Most importantly - Romney / Ryan have not outlined their plan themselves!

Every article I have read in SFGN or otherwise is nothing but Obama bashing and no - absolutely no Romney praising. They can only bash - but not support their own candidate. It seems this election boils down to those who like President Obama and those who don’t like President Obama. Nobody actually LIKES Mitt Romney or tout him as being the next great leader. They can’t because he won’t be. He is mediocre at best. Do we really want this country run by the person the GOP just settled for? With our economy in such a fragile state and our the rest of the world on the edge of the next world war I think the stakes are much too high for that. Dennis Becker Fort Lauderdale

Milestones in LGBT Parenting History

O

ctober is LGBT History Month, so I want to celebrate with a look at some of the historical milestones—of laws, visibility, and community— related to LGBT parents. This is not meant to be a comprehensive look at the 40-year history of out LGBT parents, but simply a brief list of a few LGBT parenting “firsts.” These items may show only part of the story, but I hope they will give readers a sense of the rich history of which we are part. (I have compiled these items from a number of sources; special recognition goes to Carlos Ball’s The Right to Be Parents and Jaime Campbell Naidoo’s Rainbow Family Collections. Any errors remain my own.) Dana Rudolph is the founder and publisher of Mombian (www.mombian. com), an award-winning blog and resource directory for LGBT parents.

Jane Severance’s When Megan Went Away becomes the first picture book in the U.S. to show a lesbian relationship.

1973: Sandy and Madeleine’s

Family becomes the first U.S. documentary about a lesbianheaded family. A Colorado court issues the country’s first known opinion involving a transgender parent, upholding his right to retain child custody.

1972: That Certain Summer,

the first television movie to depict a gay dad, airs on ABC, starring Martin Sheen as a dad who comes out to his teenage son, and Hal Holbrook as his partner. Scott Jacoby, who played the son, won a Best Supporting Actor Emmy.

1977: Lawyers Donna Hitchens and

Roberta Achtenberg in San Francisco form the Lesbian Rights Project (LRP), which evolves into the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), still helping LGBT parents (and others) today.

1976:

Washington, D.C. becomes first jurisdiction in the country to prohibit judges from making custody decisions based solely on sexual orientation.

1974

: A New Jersey superior court judge rules that a father’s sexual orientation is not in itself a reason to deny him child visitation, the first time a U.S. court has acknowledged the constitutional rights of gay fathers.

1978:

The Washington Supreme Court issues the country’s first custody ruling in favor of a lesbian couple (Sandy Schuster and Madeleine Isaacson of the 1973 film above). New York becomes the first state to say it will not reject adoption applicants solely because of “homosexuality.”

Several lesbian mothers and friends in Seattle form the Lesbian Mothers National Defense Fund to help lesbian mothers in custody disputes. martin sheen

Born RuPaul Andre Charles in San Diego, California, RuPaul learned about fashion from his mother and three sisters. His parents divorced when he was 7. At 16, he moved to Atlanta to live with his sister and brother-in-law. In Atlanta, RuPaul studied acting, performed as a bar dancer and sang with a band. He gained national exposure with a cameo role dancing in the video for the B-52s’ “Love Shack.” In 1987, RuPaul moved to New York, where he became a popular entertainer in the Manhattan nightclub scene. He was crowned “Queen of Manhattan 1990.” In 1993, RuPaul collaborated with Elton John on a remake of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” The following year, RuPaul had his first solo hit single, “Supermodel (You Better Work),” which topped the dance music charts. Three more dance hits followed: “Back to My Roots,” “A Shade Shady” and “House of Love.” His appearances in “The Brady Bunch Movie” (1995) and Spike Lee’s “Crooklyn” (1995), along with the release of his autobiography “Lettin It All Hang Out” (1996), landed RuPaul a talk show on VH1. He described the “The RuPaul Show” as “the most creatively satisfying, fun-filled working experience I’ve ever had.” That same year, he became a spokesperson for M.A.C Cosmetics, making him the first drag queen supermodel. In six years, RuPaul helped raise over $22 million for the M.A.C AIDS Fund. RuPaul had a role in “To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar” (1995). In the late 1990’s, he co-hosted the morning show on WKTU-FM, a New York dance music station. He produced and starred in the film “Starrbooty” (2007), which he adapted into a nightclub act. illy Strayhorn was a celebrated composer and arranger. Best known for his collaborations with bandleader Duke Ellington, Strayhorn had an important influence on the American jazz movement. The youngest of five children, Strayhorn spent his early years in Hillsborough, North Carolina. His grandmother, who was active in her church choir, encouraged Strayhorn’s musical interests. In 1924, his mother moved the family to Pittsburgh. At the Pittsburgh Musical Institute, he took piano lessons and studied classical music. Strayhorn’s musical focus shifted when he was introduced to jazz, a genre dominated by innovative and successful black musicians. In 1937, he began to compose in the jazz style and formed his first jazz group. The following year, he was introduced to Duke Ellington, who took him on as a protégé. Strayhorn worked with Ellington for the next 25 years as a composer, arranger and pianist. He composed the band’s best-known theme song, “Take the A Train.” Although Strayhorn and Ellington collaborated on numerous pieces, Strayhorn remained fairly anonymous and was rarely credited or compensated for his work. In 1946, he received the Esquire Award for Outstanding Arranger. Ellington and Strayhorn were equally credited on “Drum is a Woman” (1957). In 1965, Strayhorn played his only solo concert to a soldout theater at the New School in New York City. Some of his best-known compositions are “Chelsea Bridge,” “Day Dream,” “Johnny Come Lately,” “Clementine” and the Ellington Band’s “Lotus Blossom.” Strayhorn was openly gay. There is speculation that his sexual orientation motivated his decision to avoid the spotlight. He was actively involved in the African-American civil rights movement. For the musical revue “My People” he arranged “King Fought the Battle of ‘Bam,’” dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At 53, Strayhorn died from cancer. Although relatively unknown during his career, his complex arrangements and classical elements have inspired generations of jazz musicians.

olly Near is a singer, songwriter and activist for social change. She is an articulate political artist. She was raised in Ukiah, California, by politically active parents who were cattle ranchers. She began her show business career acting in films such as “Minnie and Moskowitz” (1971) and “Slaughterhouse Five” (1972), and in television shows including “All in the Family,” “The Partridge Family” and “The Mod Squad.” After appearing in “Hair” on Broadway, Near decided to focus on music. In 1972, she launched Redwood Records, becoming one of the first women and one of the first artists to own a record label. Redwood became a force in alternative music, showcasing the work of politically conscious recording artists. Near has released more than 25 albums. In 1981, she was one of the first out lesbians interviewed by People magazine. She has been in relationships with both men and women, but rather than identifying as bisexual, she describes herself as a “monogamous feminist.” Near was one of the “1000 Women for Peace” nominated for a 2005 Nobel Peace Prize. In 1985, she was named “Woman of the Year” by Ms. Magazine. Near’s autobiography “Fire in the Rain, Singer in the Storm” was published in 1993. In 1996, Near was honored with the GALA Choruses Legacy Award for her unique contributions to the gay and lesbian choral movement. Her portrait hangs at The Freedom Center in Cincinnati, along with other artists for social change, including Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. “Singing For Our Lives,” which she wrote to honor the memory of Harvey Milk, appears in the official hymnal of the Unitarian Universalist Church. After living most of her life in Southern California, Near returned to Ukiah, where she sings, composes, and teaches master classes in performance craft and songwriting.

LGBTMonth History Don’t Know Much About History

A

ponytailed, baby-boomer hippie, wearing a Beatles cap, rescued me in the Home Depot parking lot. My car wouldn’t start. Not only did I need a jump to my battery, but also help in opening the front hood. It’s okay to laugh. When someone asks me what kind of car just went by, I say, “a blue one.” We shook hands, exchanged names, and began talking at length about the impact the Beatles had on our generation. Coincidentally, I’d been thinking recently about how much my views on life had been guided by the words of the Beatles’ songs, and lamented that today’s youth don’t have the same consistent inspiration in the music they play. John Lennon’s vision in his song Imagine is as inspired as any spiritual message I’ve read. Do you think there might be teenagers today who don’t know who the Beatles were, and who have never heard the words, “Imagine there’s no heaven…no hell...no countries…no religion…nothing to kill or die for…all people living in peace. Imagine no possessions...no greed or hunger…all the people sharing all the world. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one…?” If the man who helped me this morning also jump started the car of a teenager, would they have talked about the name on the man’s cap? Would the teenager have been impacted by learning about something that happened before his or her time? Sitting on our lawn this summer, surrounded by LGBT teenagers who were attending summer camp in Provincetown, I listened to a “Queer Studies” college professor talk about the importance of knowing our community’s history. The teens were all from Massachusetts and surrounding states, yet they, and the adult professor, didn’t know the name Elaine Noble. “So what?” one might wonder. Why do they need to know about the first, openlygay person in American history elected to a state legislative position? That was way back in 1974, in Massachusetts, and what does that have to do with anything today? There was a story in the newspaper the other day about Jewish teenagers having their arms tattooed with the same serial numbers their relatives were labeled with in concentration camps. They did so because their Jewish peers had no awareness of the

By Brian McNaught gas ovens of Auschwitz. Is it possible that black teenagers in 100 years won’t know the name Barack Obama, or why he was significant in American history? Most Hispanic teenagers today don’t know the name Caesar Chavez, the organizer of the United Farm Workers in the 1960s and 70s. In response to the Queer Studies professor’s question on why knowing our history is important, the students were quiet for a while. Then, the most politicallysophisticated one in the group said, “Because it helps us remember where we came from, and reminds us what things could be like again if we’re not careful.” “That’s right,” the professor said. “Why else?” “It provides role models for us,” she replied, “People who made it possible for us to be here today.” Ray and I recently watched the excellent documentary How to Survive a Plague. told of how Act-Up in New York impacted the ability of gay men with AIDS to get life-saving drugs. It made me wonder whether gay men today know the name, Bruce Voeller, who wasn’t given his due in the film? If gay men are now, or will ever be, HIV-positive, they should be grateful to the former head of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force who convinced the American medical community to stop calling the epidemic GRID, for Gay-Related Immune Deficiency, and instead call it AIDS, for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It was suddenly no longer a “gay disease.” Barney Frank might never have come out of the closet had Rep. Gerry Studds not done so before him, and Gerry might never have come out if Harvey Milk hadn’t before him, and Harvey might never have won his election had Elaine Noble not crashed through the glass ceiling before him. When I told the LGBT teenager campers about Elaine, they said “cool,” and when Ray explained why most people our age are offended by the word “queer,” the Queer Studies professor nodded in agreement, but the teenagers looked puzzled. I imagine that when the peers of the Jewish teenagers see the tattooed arms with concentration camp ID numbers, they will think about their history of oppression

more often, and perhaps have more awe for those who came before them. I wish more Mexican-American teens knew how Caesar Chavez suffered for their wellbeing. And I’m glad that today we all have Barack Obama as a role model of someone who overcame obstacles to achieve his dreams as a black man. Knowing and sharing the highlights of our history with those who follow us is not just a good idea. It’s a responsibility. Imagine if young people around the world were aware of all of the struggles for social justice which have taken place before they were born. Wouldn’t they see the link between their lives and those of teenagers on other continents? Wouldn’t they understand that we are all just people sharing the world, and that their job is to make sure no one is bullied, or hungry for food or affection? You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. Brian McNaught was named “the godfather of gay diversity training” by The New York Times. urge us to avoid the consequences of making homosexuality seem a normal and acceptable choice for the young.” Bork warns that if same-sex marriage passes, “I think we’ll become much more accommodating to man-boy associations, polygamists and so forth.” Romney said of Bork, “I wish he were already on the Supreme Court,” when he announced Bork as his advisor on court appointments. The next president will almost certainly need to replace at least one justice, liberal-leaning Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who at 79 and a cancer patient, is very likely to retire within

o community has more at stake in this presidential election than the LGBT community. In Barack Obama, we have a Democratic candidate who has embraced full equality for LGBT people. We have a Republican candidate in Mitt Romney who is against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), was against ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), and is against marriage equality or civil unions for gay couples. In Romney’s vice-presidential pick Paul Ryan, we have a man who not only voted against ending DADT, but also voted against allowing gay people to adopt in the District of Columbia. Paul Ryan has told the president of Focus on the Family that a Romney/ Ryan administration “will protect traditional marriage and the rule of law and we will provide the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) the proper defense in the courts that it deserves.” It doesn’t get clearer, or meaner, than that. The most profound and lasting legacy for any president tends to be their lifetime appointments to the Supreme Court Of The United States (SCOTUS). The Romney campaign has turned to Robert Bork to lead a committee devoted to finding his SCOTUS nominees. Bork is a radically conservative former judge who’s own appointment to the Supreme Court by President Reagan was blocked by the Senate. Romney’s choice of Bork as co-chair of his Justice Advisory Committee wasn’t merely a dog whistle to the extreme right; it was a bullhorn. Robert Bork is rabidly anti-gay. In making the case for a Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution to block gay marriage, Bork writes, “Compassion, if nothing else, should

“Homosexual sodomy? Come on. For 200 years, it was criminal in every state.” LGBT Americans are on the cusp of achieving the full equality under the law sought for decades. The nation is also only one Supreme Court appointment away from overturning Roe v. Wade, Paige and ending hopes for federal marriage rights for gay couples for a generation. The Romney/ Ryan ticket is committed to the latter. The 2012 Republican Party platform is clear in its hatred for LGBT people. The responsibility for drafting the document’s language on gay issue was given to Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council (FRC), a man who calls gay-rights activists vile pawns of Satan. In 2010 Perkins attacked Obama when the President denounced proposed legislation in Uganda that would punish homosexual “repeat offenders” with death. Predictably, the Republican platform calls for an anti-gay amendment to the Constitution, and criticizes President Obama for not defending DOMA and for ending DADT. But the GOP document also berates the U.S. for advocating an end to foreign antigay laws as well: “The effectiveness of our foreign aid has been limited by the cultural agenda of the current Administration, attempting to impose on foreign countries, especially the peoples of Africa, legalized abortion and the homosexual rights agenda...We will reverse this tragic course.” The New York Times accurately calls this platform “more aggressive in it’s opposition...to gay rights than any in memory.” Under a second Obama/Biden term, the forward movement on LGBT equality of the last four years will continue. Under a Romney presidency, this progress will end. A Romney shaped SCOTUS will stop LGBT equality, especially on marriage rights, not only for four years, but for a generation. Anyone who says otherwise is either uninformed, or lying. Now go vote as if your life depends on it. In many ways, it does.

the next four years. Obama already has a history of SCOTUS appointments with Justices Sotomayor and Kagan. Bill Keller writes in the New York Times that for his part, Romney “is committed to filling any Supreme Court vacancies with Scalias.” Twenty-six years ago Antonin Scalia was confirmed to a lifetime seat on the United States Supreme Court, as a legacy of the Reagan presidency. As a Supreme Court justice, Scalia voted in 2003 to uphold state laws criminalizing gay sex. He says the Constitution does not protect the privacy of consenting adults in their own homes, and believes states are entitled to pass laws singling out LGBT people for discrimination. At a book signing earlier this month, Scalia was scornful over the idea that equal protection applies to gay people.

Denim & Diamonds The sparkly kind of a fundraiser for a sparkly kind of a church By Donald Cavanaugh do,” said Sylvester. “But just as importantly, it’s a time for people to get together and have some fun.” “We’re expecting around 125 people,” she added. “That’s about how many we’ve had in recent years. We’ve dropped the admission fee to $35 so people feeling the pinch of the current financial environment might still be able to come. “ Organizers have created the First Annual Denim & Diamond Chili Cook-Off event. Contestants are invited to bring two gallons of their best home-made chili in a crock pot that will be disguised in a variety of ways to prevent contestants from stacking the deck. According to Sylvester, the pastor’s partner, Sarah Helen Land has thrown down the gauntlet declaring her chili ‘the best.’ ‘Not so fast,’ say several other registrants who intend to take home the trophy and bragging rights for the year. An announcement in the church’s monthly magazine, Fully Alive, invites attendees to participate in something called the Empty Bowl Project to benefit the church’s Bill Meissner Food Pantry. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Fighting the Fight E Breast Cancer Survivor Strives To Share Strength By Andrea Dulanto

very October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) educates the public about breast cancer. But it’s the individual stories that often help the most, particularly when they are close to home. In Oct. 2011, SFGN shared the story of lesbian business owner Bernadette Zizzo, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2010. At the time of the article, the co-owner of Art Frenzie was recovering from her second surgery and had dealt funding her healthcare. Broward General Hospital eventually provided assistance through Medicaid Out-Patient Eligibility Department (MOPED), but the approval process took about seven months. This experience led Zizzo and her friends Pamela Dodson, Debbie Weisinger, and Debbie Burke to establish the Knock Out Cancer 4 The Cure Foundation. As she told SFGN, the foundation was created so breast cancer patients would “not have to worry about all the red tape I went through.” Recently, Zizzo updated SFGN on her health, the foundation, and what she would tell anyone dealing with breast cancer. How have you been feeling over the past year? I am slowly feeling a lot stronger — mentally, physically as well as emotionally. I have now been cancer-free for almost a year and that feels amazing.

What have you learned as you dealt with the cancer and as you recover? Cancer is not only a physical battle … [but] also an emotional and mental battle. I have struggled with accepting that I don’t have the strength I used to have. I look at this as a challenge to do things I would’ve never done. I am learning that [the] strength I use for my own health and recovery gives others strength for survival. I love knowing that I can help others have strength and courage in their lives. How has the funding for your aftercare been going? My great surgeon Dr. Nicholas Tranakas [fought] for my behalf to get approved for the double mastectomy to be performed and covered through MOPED. I ended up having all aftercare covered. Without

the great healthcare [my doctors] have given me, I would not be where I am. Can you share information about the Knock Out Cancer 4 The Cure Foundation? Last year, I received a lot of support. A huge thank you to my great friends, family, and all who donated their time and gifts, businesses like Sidelines Sports Bar, The Manor on Wilton Drive, the Boardwalk, and Debbie Burke of Art Frenzie. I have been very ill throughout this year with medical issues not related to my cancer, so I haven’t had the strength and time to work on the foundation. [But] I plan to organize another boxing match and hope all the support is still there. I hope to expand this organization within Broward Hospital by having events within medical centers. The time I was confined in the hospital room was a very lonely and low point in my recovery. I’d like to [make] the time spent in the hospital feel a little better for those that are going through what I went through. Since October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, what can you share with our readers that they may not hear often enough? Do your self-exams and get your mammograms. What would you say to individuals who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or who are survivors? I suggest staying positive even when it’s the last thing you feel like doing. Pray to your higher power for strength. Lean on your friends…you don’t have to put on a strong face all the time. I believe in laughing as much as you can because it truly is the best medicine. Open up your heart… letting somebody in has allowed me to realize I feel more alive than I have ever felt before. You only live once, so why not live life to the fullest, make life worth every minute without regrets. For more information, find Knock Out Cancer 4 The Cure Foundation on Facebook or visit National Breast Cancer Awareness Month at www.nbcam.org.

Tricks & Treats

South Florida’s Halloween scene for the thrill-seeking LGBT person

By Ryan Dixon

N

o plans for Halloween? There’s no need to fear, SFGN is here. We’ve scoured over the many events happening around the tri-county area and have come up with a few ideas to make your fright night a little more fun. West Palm Beach is home to a bevy of amazing restaurants and nightclubs. Billed as the beautiful upscale lounge and live entertainment bar in West Palm Beach, Blue Martini comes equipped with an outdoor patio bar, tantalizing tapas menu and an upscale cocktail lounge making it the hot spot for both locals and visitors. Monday Oct. 29, the lounge plays host to one of the sexiest parties in South Florida. The Palm Beach Makos Cheerleaders will be on hand for a costume fashion show sponsored by the Halloween Megastore. The night, hosted by Deshon Allen and Mike Piegaro, also features a costume contest with a cash prize for the winner, $50 bottle specials and halfoff bar tab for all those who are “in the biz.” Miami was a tough decision. How can the party capital of the word just have one great event? With that being said, we present you with two: Vampire Circus and Hellrotika. The Vampire Circus has transformed Miami’s

Bayfront Park into a haven for the beautiful and seductive creatures of the Night. Starting at 8 p.m. and running until Oct. 31, The Vampire Circus showcases a world filled with supernatural circus performers, terror and suspense, enchanted magic and comedy that will leave you dying for more. Tickets start at $20 and are available at www. thevampirecircus.us. Last year, Hellrotika: Seed of the Beast brought out more than 1,200 partygoers in hurricane-like weather, and over 2,000 of South Florida’s showiest partygoers are expected to attend this year’s event at the beautiful Moore Building to showcase the sexiest and most elaborate costumes in South Florida. This year, Hellrotika: Odyssey of the Gods is planned as a perfect combination of dance party and costume extravaganza, with the best costume contest in South Florida. Dance to the heavenly sounds of DJ Pabel Lima, & DJ MIIK in the split-level atrium at the Moor Building. All monies raised at Hellrotika will help fuel SAVE Dade’s efforts in fighting for LGBT equality in South Florida. Tickets are still available online at hellrotica.com. Rainbow Business Coalition of Greater Fort Lauderdale. On Oct. 31, Wilton Drive will be shut down from N.E. 21 Court to Five Points starting at 3 p.m. and opening up again at 3 a.m. The party starts at 6 p.m. with a pet costume contest at Georgie’s Alibi hosted by Florida’s own Dame Edna. Costume contests will be held up and down the drive all night long, several of which have cash prizes (see side bar for a list of clubs and their contest times). The RBC is bringing in food vendors as well as setting up a “Spirit Station” in the street for party goers to grab a cocktail or two as they make their way up and down the drive to see and be seen. Many of Wilton’s bars will have live entertainment for the night, highlighted by Electra as MC for a tribute to Alice in Wonderland at the Manor and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars contestant Latrice Royale performing at Boom. After midnight the party continues in the local bars, many of which have extended their closing times until 3 a.m. As always, this event is free and open to the public. Proceeds from this event will go to benefit The Pride Center. Visit wickedwilton.com for updates and vendor information.

When it comes to diversity, we see color . . . and so much more. It’s about having your community reflected on the big screen and behind the scenes. It’s offering culturally relevant programming that entertains, but also informs and inspires dreams. At Comcast and NBCUniversal, we embrace the diversity of the communities we serve, the people we employ, the vendors with whom we partner, and the students we mentor. We see the full spectrum of possibilities. Comcast and NBCUniversal are proud to support LGBT History Month.
