welve years ago, when I launched the Express Gay News, I never imagined that it would become a springboard for so many individuals to see their standing in life improve much.

Ian Drew, our entertainment editor, is now a full time writer for US Weekly, and appears regularly on CNN as a celebrity commentator. Andy Zeffer, a features writer, has gone on to publish a book and see it become a screenplay. The late Mike James eventually became the editor of the Independent. Our one time Palm Beach editor, Chip Alfred, is now a publicist for Equality Forum.

Also, Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives remain stymied and need your help in finding new leads on some cold cases, including the brutal September, 2010, murder of a Virginia communications executive, Samuel Del Brocco, whose body was found inside a condo in Pompano Beach. Now no one has been charged, no one is being accused, but surprise, at least one of his former acquaintances was apparently a former nude model and adult video star. Just sayin’…reminds me of the lyrics of that famous Jimmy Soul title, “if you wanna be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife; so from my personal point of view, get an ugly girl to marry you.”

Clarke Cooper, head of the National Log Cabin Republicans Group, said Mitt Romney won an “informal vote” among the leaders of Florida’s three chapters on the Saturday before Tuesday’s primary. And voters in Florida’s Republican primary on Tuesday gave Romney a victory, too, albeit a less resounding one than did Log Cabin Florida leaders. In the Log Cabin Florida straw poll, Romney won 24 votes to Newt Gingrich’s 6, Ron Paul’s 4, and Rick Santorum’s zero. Among voters participating in Tuesday’s Republican primary in Florida, Romney won 46 percent of the vote, compared to Gingrich’s 32 percent, Santorum’s 13 percent, and Paul’s 7 percent. A week out from the January 31 primary, Log Cabin leaders in Florida suggested their members were pretty evenly split between Romney and Gingrich. But in trying to catch up with Romney in the polls in the days leading up to the Florida voting, Gingrich began hammering Romney for being “pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-tax increase, and pro-gay rights.” He described the former governor as a “Massachusetts moderate—a liberal by Republican terms.” Romney had acknowledged to one debate audience that, as governor of Massachusetts, he had a policy of not discriminating based on sexual orientation but he opposed samesex marriage. Cooper said he thought Gingrich’s attempt to use Romney’s support for “gay rights” against him probably back-fired. “Any candidate attempting to use gays as a dividing rod in the 2012 election is bucking

public trends of inclusion and will find themselves unable to win a general election,” said Cooper. “Politics is about addition and the long term gains are made through building coalitions, not employing wedge issues.” The Log Cabin national board has not yet made an endorsement in the primary. While “gay rights,” abortion, gun control, and taxes are very significant to many voters, there is evidence to suggest that voters are giving heavier consideration to other issues. The CNN exit polls Tuesday night showed the majority (62 percent) of voters surveyed identified the economy as their most important issue, followed by the budget deficit (23 percent), abortion (7 percent), and illegal immigration (3 percent). CNN did not ask exit poll participants to identify their sexual orientation, but it did ask about marital status. Eleven percent of voters were unmarried men; 50 percent voted for Romney, 24 percent for Gingrich, 13 percent for Paul, 11 percent for Santorum, and 2 percent for others. Fifteen percent of voters were unmarried women; 47 percent voted for Romney, 28 percent for Gingrich, 11 percent for Santorum, 7 percent for Paul, and 7 percent for others. The Republican primary campaign in Florida made considerable issue of how much the contenders have paid in taxes. A week prior to the Florida vote, when Romney released his tax returns for 2010 and 2011, there was a flood of attention over the discovery that the multi-millionaire is paying only about 15 percent in taxes on his enormous earnings. But there was something specific for the

LGBT community to scrutinize, too. It wasn’t on Romney’s regular returns, but rather on the returns he files for his private Tyler Charitable Foundation. Romney pours a million or so dollars into the foundation every year and the foundation contributes the money to other charitable groups, including ones to help kids, to fight certain diseases, to help a homeless shelter for veterans, the United Way and the Red Cross. But CNN found, and other returns this reporter discovered online, show the Romney foundation also gave money to such virulently anti-gay groups as the Massachusetts Family Institute, the Salvation Army, and the Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty. “The biggest part of this money,” said CNN reporter Tom Foreman, has been the Mormon Church. Foreman didn’t mention it, but the Mormon Church was heavily involved in funding the successful campaign to pass California’s ban on same-sex marriage, Proposition 8. According to a report in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, the Romney family made its largest annual donation to the Mormon Church—$1.8 million—in 2008. That is the same year the Mormon Church gave heavy financial support to Proposition 8. The Huffington Post reported last week that the family foundation has also given to the Boy Scouts of America, and gave $10,000 to the Massachusetts Family Institute. Asked whether he thinks Romney’s contributions to groups like the Massachusetts Family Institute, which has opposed nearly every effort to secure equal rights for gays in
Massachusetts, would push away gay voters who might otherwise support Romney, Cooper said Log Cabin members are “not single issue voters.” “Like most Republicans,” he said, “they take a macro view of each candidate running for office. Domestic bread and butter issues are showing to be prime interest in the 2012 election cycle for voters, including the LGBT community.” The 2010 returns for the Gingrich Foundation showed modest contributions to the Catholic Church, some small historic associations, a couple of disease research groups, and some small colleges. His personal returns show just $9,000 to the Catholic Church and other “miscellaneous” contributions. Both the Catholic Church and the Mormon Church have contributed heavily to political efforts to ban same-sex marriage, and neither Romney nor Gingrich has been supportive of full equality for LGBT citizens. But Romney’s funding presented the most trouble for his prospects of securing 27 percent of the LGBT vote in the general election this year, as Republican nominee John McCain did in 2008. “The donations by the Romney family to these far right groups,” said Michael ColeSchwartz, communications director for the Human Rights Campaign, “only proves the point that Mitt Romney has had every position imaginable on LGBT issues, from first saying he’d be better on gay rights than Ted Kennedy to funding the groups that want to turn back the clock on marriage in Massachusetts.”

In Anita’s Wake: The Irrational War on Florida’s Gay Families ACLU presents stories of gay
M
artin Gill’s usual morning concern these days is getting his kids ready to go to school — no longer worried and wrapped up in legal battles over whether they’ll be coming back home. But while Gill’s battle was fought and won, overturning in September 2010 a ban on gay adoption in Florida, the ACLU’s director in the state, Howard Simon, foresaw that the issues themselves “are not resolved when the verdict is given.” “We’re not out of the woods until the legislature bangs the gavel and goes home,” Simon said. Along with Gill, Simon was on a panel that also included Elizabeth Schwartz, a Miami-based adoption attorney. It was part of a training event put on by the ACLU on Feb. 2 at University of Miami’s Law School. The Aqua Foundation for Women and multiple other co-sponsors helped put things together. First item on the bill was the screening of In Anita’s Wake: The Irrational War on Florida’s Gay Families. It told Gill’s story and two other same-sex couples’ adoptive stories, as they were affected by the adoption ban imposed in part by the efforts of Anita Bryant’s — the 1970s orange juice spokesperson turned anti-gay evangelist. Then the three panelists got together to explain what hardships lay ahead, after which they took questions. Schwartz was the first to speak, and summarized the film in a sentence. “Now it’s the law of the land in Florida that this ban can’t be approved,” she said, adding that judges have loved the slew of adoptions, over a hundred of them, since the ban was overturned. Since Gill’s kids were given permanency in his home, various claims of their undoing have been debunked. “When we get home, my 11-year-old son helps me cook.

They are both talented hip-hop dancers. They like Justin Bieber, Usher, and the Black Eyed Peas.” The kids are asleep by 9 p.m. Weekends include bikeriding at Oleta Park, kayaking or maybe a relaxing stay at the pool they have at home. Regardless, Gill said, the kids play “basketball daily in the front driveway. They are both gifted athletes.” “They know well what the difference is between foster care and being adopted as they have seen many kids come and go,” Gill summarized, adding that he’s had by now 25 foster kids. “They have the security of knowing they are part of a forever family.” Leah Weston, 26, a first year law school student at UM, attended the session because “this is a very important civil rights issue.” “The tide of public opinion on this is really changing,” she said about her intentions to go into law school in the first place. “It’s timely.” While Schwartz agreed that the gay community has seen “incredible progress” in this regard, she said the road ahead is still uncertain. “We need to talk to lawmakers about our families and the harmful effects of bigotry and short-sighted partisanship,” she said. “We also need to be informed about the state of the law and make sure we’re ready for any sort of attack our families may face, either at the ballot box or in Tallahassee.” That’s why the ACLU is running these training sessions, as Simon carefully explained. “It’s urgent that people become informed on this

It’s asinine but true.”

Aqua hosts first ever award ceremony Friday
T
he Aqua Foundation for Women’s first Aqua Ally Awards event takes place Friday, Feb. 10 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Coral Gables. “We want to thank those who stand with us,” said Robin Schwartz, executive director of Aqua. Schwartz explained that the funds from the ceremony will be used to “transform” and “build” the community, which are two of Aqua’s major goals, the last being “leading.” The honorees include Howard Simon, the executive director of Florida’s ACLU chapter, and Patricia Ireland, former president of the National Organization for Women. “We chose Patricia because of her leadership of women across the board for many years,” Schwartz said. “Howard was instrumental in overturning the adoption ban.” The event will take place on the 15th floor

wo gay men who say they were punched and pinned to the ground by an off-duty police officer before being called offensive names and jailed without their trousers have sued the city and its police over what they call anti-gay bias. Steven Ondo and Jonathan Simcox said the off-duty officer, who was a neighbor,

complained about a noisy argument on the street and attacked them last April and had them arrested. A week later, they said, they were arrested by SWAT officers and were punched again at their home while lounging in T-shirts and underpants. They said they were denied a chance to get their pants and weren’t provided with any in jail for a day. The men were charged with assaulting the officer but were acquitted Oct. 20 in a nonjury trial. Ondo, 22, and Simcox, 25, filed the U.S. District Court lawsuit against the city and its police last month and asked for unspecified damages. They said their goal was to deter biased treatment by police. During the second arrest, the lawsuit says, the officers repeatedly referred to Ondo and Simcox as “faggots” and said “faggots don’t get to wear pants to jail” when they were transported to the city lockup. Simcox’s brother was at the house and asked if he could get the pants for them, but police refused, although he was allowed to get their shoes, the lawsuit says. Police usually allow cooperative arrested people to retrieve their clothing. A top city official said Friday the city wouldn’t discuss details of the litigation. “The city of Cleveland is aware that the lawsuit has been filed and will appropriately address this legal matter in court,” interim Law Director Barbara Langhenry said in an email. Ondo and Simcox could not be reached Friday. No phone was listed for Ondo in court records, and a phone number for Simcox provided by his attorney wasn’t accepting calls. Attorney Dan Chaplin, who represented Ondo in the criminal case, said each man weighs about 120 to 130 pounds and they were tossed around like rag dolls by their 225-pound neighbor. About a week later, he said, a SWAT team calling them “fags” and “queer” arrested them at their home at about 5:30 a.m. on a warrant accusing them of assaulting a police officer. The team then put them in a police van and drove around for a couple of hours making other arrests, he said. “They were humiliated and embarrassed. They were shackled to strangers while they were in their underwear and they couldn’t leave,” Chaplin said. “And the other guys that were arrested were allowed to get clothes on.” At the jail, he said, police mocked them, telling them “fags don’t deserve to wear pants” and asked them questions about their sex lives. “It was just real old-fashioned gay bashing by the Cleveland police department,” he said. Cleveland police and the city’s Office of Professional Standards said no complaint had been filed in the case, mayoral spokeswoman Andrea Taylor said.

nce upon a time our heroine would walk into a room and all male eyes turned her way, she moved with an effortless grace portraying an aura of self awareness and confidence . . . believing that life would always be this way. But that was then, and this is now . . . she has been replaced with younger, younger and younger. Generations of past women had the luxury of experiencing certainty and predictability. Growing up they had inherited the profound belief that they would be loved and cared for by the man of their dreams. He would sweep her off her feet and they would live happily ever after. Today that is a fairy tale. Mature women in the 21st century are experiencing something very different—male scarcity. Our proud damsels, perched on the carousel of success, believed that their ride would be endless, never contemplating that their journey may be nearing a conclusion . . . a grand finale without a man? Who would have thought? The proof is in the pudding, statistics show that the biggest groups of on-line-dating participants are women over fifty. These women herald a trend that experts expect to grow as the baby boom generation heads into retirement. Almost half of women between the ages of 45 and 59, surveyed by AARP last year, consider living with a friend as an attractive way to grow old. They are joined by a third of women in their 60s and above. What is happening in the years 2000? The fall from grace can be harsh and painful as one enters a twilight zone of disillusionment, loneliness, self-doubt and economic instability. Our heroine’s male counterparts also face a similar set of circumstances. Both sets of Boomers are typical, in that the majority lived their lives with one foot in yesterday and the other in tomorrow. Boomers were too busy living to appreciate and bask in the

Many mature women go under the knife time and time again, refusing to let go of their youth and their dreams, continuing the marathon hunt for a man. Often they are offended by the mere suggestion of entertaining options, especially the option of seeking a woman as a life partner. Will this eventually change the older they get? At first this premise threatens the mature woman who has never thought of herself to have lesbian tendencies, but this is different. Could she find happiness in a female relationship is more to the point? Why not, women have so much in common and lifealtering decisions should be defined by personal needs in modern times. There seems to be a growing trend of female Baby Boomers who are finding happiness together and are in fact, living happily ever after. Adams, a University of North Carolina sociologist who studies adult relationships says, “Baby Boomer women have been on their own more than previous cohorts have . . . Many women who lived a traditional married life are feminists and more likely to return to an all female environment.” The trend is expected to evolve as the years go by. The shackles of habits and patterns that lock people into status quo thinking will be broken. The fears that inhibit people from the freedom to create a new order of relationship will eventually evaporate. Baby Boomers are a special breed; they have a history of dealing with outmoded economic, religious and social systems. They are a tough-minded bunch and experienced in

There are No Cooties in the Garden of Eden

T
he Garden of Eden is not a mythological place like heaven and hell. It is located in our own zip codes, on our own streets, in our own homes. But there are no cooties allowed in the Garden of Eden, nor shame. If you think you have cooties, or you are ashamed of who and what you are, you’ll never find it no matter how hard you search. The Garden of Eden is bliss, or, if you prefer, great happiness. It is a moveable feast that travels with you to school, work, and recreation. It is there when people love you and when they hate you. It is there when you are considered a failure and when you are considered a success. You can feel it in the White House and in jail. But you can’t feel it if you have cooties, or are ashamed of who you are. Children tell each other that they have cooties, with the intention of causing shame. But children first learn of cooties at home. Cooties are things that other people find disgusting. A guest at lunch yesterday told us that because she had polio as a child, her mother told her, “God gave me five normal children. What happened to you?” Polio is cooties. If you believe you have cooties, you feel shame. If you feel shame, you can never experience bliss. If you can’t experience bliss, you can’t be in the Garden of Eden. While taking friends through the “Our Stars” exhibition at the Stonewall National Museum, one spotted the poster for Making Love, the 1982 commercially-released film in which actors Harry Hamlin and Michael Ontkean kiss passionately. “When I saw it,” he said, “people in the audience gasped in disgust.” Men who kiss men have cooties. If you believe that, you feel shame. When I was a child, the black woman my mother hired to babysit for us asked for a drink of my pop (I’m from Michigan.) I said, “Eew, no, you have germs.” It was a response I had learned to give to everyone. I was shocked when the woman got angry and said, “I don’t have no special germs.” Way back in the late 1950s, she was letting me know that she didn’t have cooties just because she was black. I suspect she entered the Garden of Eden long before I did as a gay man who squirmed in fear in response to the expressions of disgust at Making Love. Fundamentalist Christians can get quite smug when they announce that “God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.” They want gay men and women to accept that we
have cooties and no place in the Garden of Eden. We shouldn’t expect to join them in the place they call heaven. I’ve come to believe that there is no personal God who creates, guides, and judges humans, and that people who try to create hell for others will never experience bliss in this world. The gates to the Garden of Eden are closed to them as long as they attempt to make others feel less than perfect. Ray and I remind ourselves and each other on a daily basis that we are in heaven. It’s true not because we enjoy a very privileged lifestyle, but because neither of us feels as if we have cooties, and neither of us feels shame. And it’s not just the cooties of homosexuality that we have rejected as false, but also the cooties of being unworthy of other people’s respect and love on any basis. Perhaps it’s our age, but we don’t care any longer if others approve of us. We don’t apologize for being white, male, able-bodied, American, privileged, agnostics, Buddhists, non-drinkers, early diners, early risers, controlling, passionate, old, or any other characteristic for which others might want to make us feel shame. It breaks my heart when I look at anyone who feels shame about who they are, or who feels they need to offer excuses for their existence. Perfection is an illusion. People who tell us that we have cooties, or who make signs of disgust about our personhood, are not happy people, and they don’t want us to be happy either. When we participate in any way to make others feel as if they have cooties, for whatever reason, we are seeking to shame them, and we lose that moment’s opportunity for bliss. If you want to be happy, regardless of your race, sex, faith, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, or any other factor, be happy because of your race, sex, faith, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, or any other factor. Allen West Flees Wilton Manors Redistricting shakes up South Florida’s congressional races

A
fter the Florida state legislature redrew the 22nd Congressional District to include more democrats and a much larger slice of Wilton Manors Republican Congressman Allen West decided to seek reelection to the House of Representatives in the newly proposed 18th Congressional District, which includes northern Palm Beach County, and all of St. Lucie and Martin counties. If West had decided to run for reelection in the 22nd district it would have been an uphill battle. The newly proposed 18th district, however, will be far more republican friendly. Republican Tom Rooney currently represents the area, but is leaving to run in the proposed 17th Congressional District on the west coast of Florida. Democrats naturally blasted West’s decision to relocate. Former West Palm Beach Mayor Democrat
Lois Frankel, who’s running for West’s seat, released a statement: “Allen West just announced that he is cutting and running from a fight with me - he is retreating to another district,” she said in a prepared statement. “Mr. West had to see the writing on the wall- after spending his time in Washington practicing his extreme tea-party politics, he lost touch with our district’s values.” While Patrick Murphy, another democratic candidate for the seat, said: “Allen West went from talking tough this weekend and telling progressives to “get the hell out of this country” to abandoning the people who elected him. There is no other way to interpret this: Allen West is a coward. The truth is that the maps are far from set and I will continue to monitor the redistricting process closely.” Since West has relocated former Majority Leader of the State House of Representatives Republican Adam Hasner has decided to drop his bid for the U.S. Senate and instead

The Legislative Director of the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus, Michael Rajner, has a theory on why the Republicans redrew West’s district. “The republican controlled legislature set him up for failure. To throw him out of Congress essentially,” he said. A theory it turns out West doesn’t necessarily dispute. In an interview with CBS News he said: “I think for whatever reason they had some alternatives for some maps they could have accepted as amendments that would have kept this as a very competitive district. Whatever reason they decided to go a little more extreme. No one is gonna lay a trap for me and so that’s why we saw a great opportunity with Tom Rooney shifting to a new district.” West also went on to say the new district contains 23 percent of his current district
and that there’s a lot of commonality because it’s on coast of Southeast Florida. “It’s quite interesting that Allen West this whole time while campaigning continued to tell democrats to bring it on,” Rajner said. “He’s like a sewer rat trying to climb to higher ground to fight the flooding waters. Drop what you’re doing, grab the remote and pick a side, red, blue or otherwise. It’s that time again: national elections are this year, and are being called some of the most important in modern history – mostly because of the current financial crisis and the perceived decline of the middle class. Especially after the 2000 election debacle, South Floridians know that each vote counts and know that now, perhaps more than ever, knowledge is power: they need to know not only who they’re voting for but why they’re voting as well. The 2008 election ushered in what was supposed to be a new, lasting era of progressive liberalism. But two years later in 2010, the political climate was again shaken up when the “Tea Party” movement swept the nation and had a significant impact on the mid-term elections. This year, while the people have made it clear they’re willing to take their country back, it’s still anyone’s guess what that “country” will actually consist of. A good place to start in determining its final make-up, though, is to look at the legislative elections, and that’s what SFGN is doing this week. Enter Patrick Eric Murphy, 28-years-old, and a candidate for the 22nd district of the U.S. House of Representatives. If elected he would be the youngest sitting member of the House, and brings with him a far different background than most politicians. Neither a lawyer or career politician, he is a CPA and businessman who appears more willing to explore the issues rather than dictate his positions. Make no mistake: he knows what he stands for, but places “progress over partisanship” and spoke with the SFGN for nearly an hour demonstrating his unwavering dedication to “full LGBT equality and rights” and sharing his stances on other issues from the budget and national security to social security.

Born and raised in the Florida Keys, Murphy graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in finance and accounting. This prompted a 5-year tenure as an external auditor of Fortune 500 companies on behalf of multi-billion dollar auditing and accounting firm Deloitte and Touch. His financial experience acting as a catalyst for his ambitions in business led to his eventual move to Coastal Environmental Co., with a specific emphasis on clean-up efforts following the 2010 BP Oil Disaster. Murphy is currently the VP of Coastal Environmental Services, according to the Website of parent company Coastal Construction. He worked on the front lines of the BP oil spill, which turned out to be more than just motivation for Murphy, though. Being a part of the middle class and feeling its negative affects resultant of the economic downturn, Murphy’s work in helping the environment eventually transformed itself in to political ambitions. “One day towards the end of 2010, I found myself contemplating the world around me, wondering where this country was headed, and I realized that I was no one to point the finger and complain without truly doing anything about it,” Murphy says. And so began Murphy’s bid for national office as a representative of the 22nd district, with his campaign’s official kick-off in March of 2011. Gathering a team headed by Eric Johnson, 14-year chiefof-staff to Former U.S. Congressman Robert Wexler, along with polishing his message and gathering endorsements from Republicans and Democrats alike, Murphy began to hit the political circuit and hit it hard, raising $1.4 million in his campaign’s 11 month existence, according to Johnson. Among some of his more notable endorsements: Former 19th District Congressman Wexler (D), Former Governor of Florida Charlie Crist (R), Former Secretary of Health and Human Services and current President of the University of Miami Donna Shalala as well as a slew of political notables both in and out of the state of Florida. Currently running what he calls a mutually agreed upon
“friendly” primary race against former West Palm Beach Mayor, Lois Frankel, Murphy set his sites further in his interview with the SFGN – namely on the incumbent of the 22nd district, and his would-be opponent following a primary win – the highly outspoken (and blatantly anti-gay) Allen West. With much to say on the subject of West, however, the election took a drastic turn for Murphy when, following the interview with SFGN, the Florida State Legislature’s Re-Districting Committee re-drew the 22nd District’s boundaries to include more democrats and more of Wilton Manors. West simultaneously decided to move his race to the more conservative former 16th (now 18th) district – leaving Murphy and Frankel alone to duke it out in a primary race. But even that wouldn’t last for long as former Florida House Majority Leader Adam Hasner has since entered the race, dropping his bid for the U.S. Senate, in an attempt to hold on to the 22nd district for the Republicans. Still, for Murphy, while the dynamic of the race has undoubtedly shifted, the show must and will go on. Aside from his representing the next generation of politicians and his willingness to work with both sides to ensure forward progress, one may ponder Murphy’s lack of experience as a seasoned politician. Taken against the backdrop of the economy, however, there are undoubtedly some, if not many, who openly endorse the idea of electing a financial professional with extensive budgetary experience in dealing with companies whose financials rival in complexity as those of the United States as a whole. Naturally, in the grand tradition of American politics, these decisions ultimately rest with Murphy’s constituents. But if past elections and primaries are any indicators, Murphy’s subtle but decisive speeches coupled with his indisputable background in finance and his fresh face may help the American voter in the area in which they falter the most in making political decisions: distinguishing “heart from head” and choosing to vote for change rather than simply complain about it.

On the issue of the budget, what is the best way to cut spending while continuing to generate revenue for the government? First, I completely support repealing the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% of Americans. This is digging a deeper hole for the country. As for revenue side, reigning in out of control defense spending corporate tax loopholes and incentives.
What are your views on Social Security reform? Social Security has been the most successful federal program in history and is sustainable as is for 28 more years. Privatizing Social Security is destroying social security. I believe we need to work within the current system to improve and strengthen it. Alternatives like adjusting the cap on social security taxes for the wealthiest Americans is the kind of reform that can be looked at.

I believe in an unbreakable bond between the United States and Israel. Israel is our most important ally in the world and their safety and security is paramount to me. The President has stood up for Israel at the UN, coordinated unprecedented military cooperation with Israel, sold them bunker busting bombs that even the Bush administration refused to sell and been there in emergencies like the one that occurred in the Egyptian embassy. I will let the words of Deputy Foreign Minister (and former Israeli ambassador to the US) Daniel Ayalon speak for themselves: “I can tell you in a very categorical way that we have not had a better friend than President Obama.”
How about creating jobs and helping not only make them, but make sure they pay a living wage? I support stimulating economic growth with an aggressive job’s bill like the president has proposed. Being in a district, which is so ethnically diverse, how do you feel about immigration reform?
I believe strongly in enforcing our border and our immigration laws. I am also a realist who knows that 11 million people will not “self-deport” or be physically thrown out by the US, therefore I support reasonable reforms like the Dream Act. [Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act allowing young immigrant/aliens who have met certain criteria either enter the military, attend college or carve a path to citizenship they’d otherwise not have been afforded according to Dreamact.info/students]
On national defense, what are your views on entering conflicts abroad? America should always be ready to take on its enemies throughout the world. Without question, there are times where will have to use force, but the philosophy of [Congressman Allen] West has, in my view, made us less safe.

Tennis Teams Up With Gay tennis club’s national Togethernesstournament to benefit SunServe By Gideon Grudo
T
ennis players in the global LGBT community will be coming together for a tournament in Fort Lauderdale — and it’s about more than just winning, according to the people running it. More than 200 players are expected at the annual Clay Court Classic, hailing from Australia to Europe. It’s put on by the South Florida Tennis Club (SFTC), a wing of the international Gay and Lesbian Tennis Association (GLTA). The games are from Feb. 17 to Feb. 20, as the tournament usually falls on President’s Day Weekend. The fees to play — $109 for singles and an extra $20 for doubles — are collected and proceeds are then donated to charity. This year, the recipient will be Sunserve. All members of the organizations are gay or allies, according SFTC’s president, Robert O’Dor, in keeping with the mission of having a tennis organization made up of LGBTA. O’Dor said that last year’s tournament was a major success, its donation of $2,500 going to the Broward House, self-described on its website — BrowardHouse.org — as “South Florida’s oldest and largest HIV/AIDS community service. “We have a very competitive tournament,” O’Dor said. “But we also enjoy the fact that we can raise a little bit of money for charity.” The three-day event includes the games, a silent auction and a banquet. O’Dor said that the social gatherings intend to “to get all the players together.” “It’s important that players get to meet various

players from all over the world,” he said. “It gives us an opportunity to get new friends.” Dan Merrithew, commissioner for GLTA, oversees the seven-member board that coordinates the 70 or so annual tournaments around the world and the 10,000 players that participate in them. This year, Merrithew said, GLTA will expand into Africa, its hands arching over five continents by then. The concept started about 30 years ago when several San Franciscan tennis clubs were looking to compete with each other and create an LGBTA tennis community. They spread into Texas first. Within ten years, in 1991, they incorporated as a non-profit — the rest is history. “Every year we’ve grown to another city,” Merrithew said, who started playing in 1999 and has been to 200 tournaments since. He added that “it goes beyond the tournament.” Merrithew recently calculated that GLTA has donated over $1.3 million over its life-span. “None of the tournaments can make a profit,” he said, explaining that they all donate their revenues to charities ranging from at-risk youth to LGBT-focused. “All of the proceeds go back into that community.” Aside from benefiting local communities, Merrithew said, the events also promote a united social scene, especially provocative to the younger crowd. “The college kids — even high school kinds — may feel like they don’t belong in mainstream sports,” he said. “These give them an opportunity to be safe and play.”

Teens, New Band Combat Bullying With Music By J.W Arnold
W
hile stories of anti-gay bullying have made the national and international news in past year, the problem is not new. Just ask Valerie Trumps of Fort Lauderdale: “I was very shy in high school and didn’t really have a lot of friends,” she recalls. “I was made fun of and it was hurtful.” But Trumps found support in her school band. “The band was somewhere I felt comfortable and belonged. It was me and the geeks,” she says. Thirty years later, Trumps bands together each week with nearly 50 other local LGBT and straight musicians to perform in the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble (SFPWE). Many shared the same experiences growing up.

“Music is physically healing, as well as emotionally and spiritually,” says Trumps. As yet more bullying stories hit the news following the tragic suicide of Tyler Clementi, a violinist who was a freshman at Princeton University, then-SFPWE president Adam DeRosa raised the cause to his organization and asked what their band could do. The result was the Youth Pride Band of South Florida. “With so many teen suicides and assaults occurring in the past year or two, we felt it important to do what we could to address bullying and provide a positive experience for young musicians,” explains Alain Ortiz, current president of SFPWE. Membership was opened to lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning and allied students across
South Florida and three will receive $1,000 college scholarships. Twenty-seven students from a dozen Broward and Miami-Dade high schools applied to participate. The Youth Pride Band will give its inaugural performance at the Amaturo Theatre at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. Internationally acclaimed conductor and composer David Shaffer of Miami University of Ohio will conduct a program of traditional band music, as well as several of his own compositions. Conductor Shaffer remembers his own experiences being bullied as a teen and supports the mission of the band, “I definitely relate back to when I was in junior high school. This is a fantastic opportunity to get kids involved in a weekend making good music and bringing young people together.” For clarinetist Natalie Mullen, 17, a straight senior at McArthur High School in Hollywood, the band provides an opportunity to support her friends. One openly gay friend broke both his legs after trying to commit suicide by jumping from a second story building. Another admitted on Facebook that he cuts himself. “The bullying really affects their self-esteem,” Mullen says. Bisexual flutist Christina Dunbar, 18, president of the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at Pembroke Pines Charter High School, knows firsthand how hard it is to come out and often hears antigay slurs from her classmates. She is enjoying
working with the adult members of the SFPWE. “This is a side of the gay community that I hadn’t seen,” she says. “It’s amazing how supportive everybody has been.” And for gay saxophonist Julio Marcone, 17, a senior at Fort Lauderdale High School, the band provides an opportunity to make music. His school eliminated the band program due to budget cuts. “It’s been an experience,” he says of the first rehearsal. “I heard about the band from a friend I’m so glad I have the chance to play again.” Self-described “band mom” Audrey Williams of Hallandale Beach encouraged her straight daughter, Ashley, 17, to join. Williams, a native of Jamaica, supports the band’s mission and plans to spread the word to other band parents in South Florida. “This is a fantastic opportunity for the kids to build understanding,” she says. “That’s important.” In addition to the performance at the Broward Center, the Pride Youth Band will produce a video similar to the “It Gets Better” project that raised so much awareness of the problem of bullying.

Choreographer interprets love for Valentine’s Day

hen William Crowley’s Next Step Dance Company takes the stage at the Broward Center next week with its latest production, “Eros,” the South Florida choreographer hopes to capture his audiences’ hearts. “The show is based on the ideal of love,” he explains, “which corresponds with our presentation on Valentine’s Day weekend. We explore the different facets of love—finding it, struggling with it, coming to some sort of resolve—every aspect of the emotion and not just the romanticized version.” Crowley’s ninth show, “Eros” utilizes combinations of both male and female dancers to explore the emotions inherent with love. The program, he notes, will include an encore performance of choreographer Pioneer Winter’s popular male pas de deux that was premiered last year. And, as in previous years, the program is a “mixed bag,” making use of a variety of styles and music from classical to contemporary. “I really strive to keep our audiences engaged and I think there is always something for everyone in the audience to enjoy,” he says. Crowley will dance the premiere of his new work, “Hymn to Eros,” an interpretation of the Greek god of love, set to music based on an ancient Greek chant. “It’s definitely proven to be challenging to me as an artist because I’m taking it solely from the myths of his creation, his coming into being,” says Crowley. “It would be interesting to get into the stories of his interaction with human beings and the mischief he got into, but I chose to focus on his creation and purpose in the bigger picture of life.”

Crowley’s goal was to get to the root of the legend and the mystical Greek culture from which it evolved with the goal of an authentic performance. Many months were spent researching the various tales of Eros and developing a storyline for his dance. He admits it was a difficult exercise, trying to communicate these abstract myths to an audience with only his movement and the music. Crowley characterizes Next Step Dance as a “pick up” company, with dancers assembled and rehearsals held just weeks prior to the group’s performances. In most years, they have staged one show, usually in the summer, but the opportunity to do a Valentine’sthemed performance led him to schedule two performances. Crowley maintains a busy teaching schedule throughout the academic year, including classes at the University of Miami, but he has worked with many of the same dancers for many seasons, allowing the program to come together with just a few rehearsals, despite the many technical and artistic challenges in the dances. As the big night approaches, he loves— pun intended—the opportunity to again share his love of dance with his neighbors in Broward County, especially on Valentine’s Day weekend.

‘Brangelina’ Ends Engagement with Gay Marriage

rad Pitt has said that he is ready to make the commitment to Angelina Jolie, in addition to the joint custody of their six children. Many advocates of marriage equality were ecstatic at Pitt and Jolie’s initial commitment to equal rights. However, the honeymoon is over. Both Pitt and Jolie can’t seem to wait it out much longer. At the pleading of their children, the call of romance and a rumored pregnancy, the two have retracted their promise not to marry. It is unclear whether or not Pitt has proposed to Jolie, however,
they have expressed their desire to get married, partly on behalf of their six children. It was in an October 2006 article in Esquire that “Brangelina” originally said they would not marry until everyone in America can. In an interview with Parade Magazine, Pitt called this discrimination, “blatant, ugly bigotry,” a belief that had no logical grounds.While the couple continues to profess their outrage over gay marriage, for their family, they just can’t wait. It is unclear how quickly things may move forward for the two, but it seems for now, their kids and their family have won over the couple’s ever-present social activism. Pitt and Jolie have been together for seven years, have three biological children and three adopted children.

Some Signature cocktails recipes to make a splash at your reception: Orange Chiffon l 1½ ounces Orange flavored vodka l 3/4 ounce limoncello l 1/2 ounce orange juice l 1/2 ounce Nava vanilla liqueur l 1 small egg white Orange Cocktail Candy Rimmer l Rim a cocktail glass with Orange Rimmer. lSet aside. l Shake vodka, limoncello, vanilla liqueur, orange juice and egg white vigorously, with ice. l Gently strain into martini glass.
Splash Simple Syrup, recipe follows l Sprig mint, for garnish Directions the mint leaves and the sugar in the bottom of a tall glass. l With the handle of a wooden spoon, crush and mash the leaves to extract the flavor. l Fill the glass with crushed (not cubed) ice. l Pour in the bourbon. l Top with a splash of simple syrup. l With a long-handled spoon, jiggle (not stir) to chill and mix. l Garnish with a sprig of mint. l Sip. l Put
