Zoe Saldana Says She Would Marry a Woman Actress revealed that after her male relationships, the ‘right one’ could be female “Avatar” star Zoe Saldana may have been engaged to actor Keith Britton, and then dated Hollywood hunk Bradley Cooper until December, but she says her ultimate love may someday be a woman. “[I might] end up with a woman raising my children,” Saldana told Allure Magazine for a photo shoot in which she
appeared naked, “that’s how androgynous I am.” Besides going topless, the 34-year-old also revealed more about her sexuality, admitting that when she’s in love she gives herself 100 percent to the relationship. “If I have something good in front of me, it doesn’t matter if it’s a person or a pair of shoes,
I’m not going to test something else,” Saldana said. “It’s insecure and it’s immature.” “It’s okay to say, ‘This is what I want,’ and go after it,” she adds. Saldana’s latest film, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” opens in theaters last week. The June issue of Allure hit newsstands on May 21.

The walk has raised over $128,000,000 for HIV programs since 1986 The 28th annual New York AIDS Walk, said to be the largest of its kind in the world, took place on Sunday, May 19. Some celebrities headlining the event included Glee’s Alex Newell, Ugly Betty’s Micheal Urie and Martha Wash singing You’ll Never Walk Alone. The walk started and ended
at Central Park. All the proceeds went to the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and more that 40 other local AIDS service organizations. “More than one million people are living with HIV in the United States. One in five (21 percent) of those people living with HIV is unaware of their infection,” GMHC said.
GMHC added: “More than 18,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the US. Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are strongly affected and represent the majority of persons who have died.’ The New York AIDS Walk has raised over $128,000,000 for HIV programs and services since 1986.

On the #GoWest website people can send out a tweet that will automatically be translated into Russian, inviting people to attend the celebrations. “To celebrate that love, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and gender

Unlike Russia, Sweden has been at the forefront in the battle for gay and trans rights recognition. The country legalized gay marriage in 2009.

High School romance ends in arrest; online campaign launched in response
jason.parsley@sfgn.com
Kaitlyn Hunt allegedly had sexual relations with her girlfriend. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem, but in this case, Hunt is 18 years old and her girlfriend at the time was 14, which makes it illegal even though the relationship was consensual and both girls attended the same high school and played on the same sports team. The story went viral this week with people expressing their outrage online. Hunt’s parents are waging a social media campaign to clear their daughter’s name, which includes an online petition on Change.org that’s now topped 100,000 signatures and launched a “Free Kate” Facebook group with more than 32,000 members. Hunt’s been charged with two felonies of “lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12 – 16 years of age,” which, if she’s convicted, could send her to jail for 15 years and put her on a sexual offender list for life. In Florida the age of consent is 18, but there are age exemptions allowing individuals 23 and younger to have a consensual sexual relationship with a 16- or 17-year-old.
“I am outraged,” said Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida. “It’s outrageous a teenager is facing felony charges that carry up to 15 years in because of a relationship with a school mate. These laws are intended to stop adults from preying on children and should not be used to destroy the lives of these two teenagers.” Smith said Equality Florida is pushing this story in the media to bring awareness to Hunt’s plight, as well as contacting legislators and legal organizations. The state attorney’s office has offered Hunt a plea deal that reduces the charges to felony child abuse, which would require two years of house arrest, plus one more year of probation. Hunt has until May 24 to accept the deal. If not, the trial could start in June. “This is complete absence of common sense application of the law and it’s terrifying,” Smith said. “A lot of times these cases stem from a parent objecting to race, gender, or ethnicity of the person their child is dating so they wait to the eighteenth birthday and go to the police. They ignore
the fact that they’re teenagers, and school than four years older. In addition the sex must mates. It’s unconscionable that this law is have been consensual, and the offender must used in this case or any other that involves not have additional sex offense convictions high school sweet hearts.” after the original offense. Hunt’s parents have alleged that Hunt’s For more exclusive coverage, go to sfgn.com. sexual orientation was a factor in their decision to go to the police. The Indian River Sheriff’s Department denies sexual orientation was a factor in the arrest and charges. Legislative director for the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus, Michael Rajner, isn’t buying it. “The prosecution of Kaitlyn Hunt by the Indian River State Attorney’s Office is an absolute abuse of our criminal justice system and clearly fueled by blatant homophobia,” he said. Florida passed a law in 2007 that may help Hunt if she’s convicted. Nicknamed the “Romeo and Juliet” law, it allows judges to remove individuals from the sexual offender Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, has been charged with two felonies “lewd and registry list if the victim was at least lascivious battery on a child 12 – 16 years of age.” Photo courtesy of Kaitlyn Hunt’s Facebook page 14 years old and the offender no more

+Superman Writer Considered Killing Character with AIDS Famed comic book writer and creator Jim Starlin revealed during a panel at the Nashville Comic and Horror Festival the he and other creative minds at DC Comics voted to decide which character to kill in the 80s using AIDS. Comicbook.com reports that the revelation came in a story Starlin was telling the crowd. In the late 80s Starlin
had allowed fans to call in and decide if Robin should live or die in the Batman comic, “A Death In The Family.” “When the AIDS epidemic first came to light, DC had this idea to do a book where one of their characters contracted AIDS and died from it,” Starlin told the crowd. “And so, being the nice sensitive subject that it is, they
put out a suggestion box that you were supposed to drop in the name of the character that you thought should die from AIDS.” Starlin said the majority of people voted for photograph Jimmy Olsen should be the one to contract AIDS and die. But because of who played Olsen in the Superman movies
Mom’ Patricia +‘Tanning Krentcil Appears in Gay Porn
Patricia Krentcil, also known as “Tanning Mom,” is scheduled to make her porn debut in the upcoming gay flick Kings of New York by Lucas Entertainment, according to celebrity gossip website TMZ. Film director Marc MacNamara told The Huffington Post that Krentcil, who was launched into the spotlight for allegedly allowing her five year old daughter to tan at a salon, will be playing the owner of a tanning salon where the characters in the porn come to get some color before a weekend in Fire Island. “We expected Patricia to need a bit of handholding, but when she showed up we quickly found out we had to hold more than her hand to prop her seemingly inebriated body up,” MacNamara told Huffington Post. “She seemed to having a great time, but it was definitely a challenging day. In the end she delivered Tan Mom in all her glory and that’s what people are infatuated with.” Krentcil landed the gig after she failed to get into the adult business with Vivid Entertainment. The company turned her down because they “don’t do granny porn.” Krentcil will apparently be paid $1,000 for her fully clothed, non-sexual cameo in the series. Andy Dick, Lady Bunny and Michael Lucas appeared in season one.

A court in Milan, Italy has recognized the civil partnership of two men from London, giving the two the opportunity to apply for local benefits including welfare and visitation rights if one is hospitalized, according to Gay Star News. The civil union between Christian and Federico was added to the Registro delle Unioni Civili of Milan, a list of same-sex couples implemented by liberal Mayor Giuliano Pisapia. The couple, who have been together for eight years, are Italian residents who were able to establish their partnership at the Globe Theater in London thanks to a temporary residency in the U.K. “We paid just [$90] and we could marry in front of 70 relatives and friends,” Federico told Gay Star News. “The recognition by the Milan tribunal is just a little thing, but it’s also an important step towards equality.” The couple says while they’re appreciative of the local recognition, they want their relationship legal in the entire country. “We want to proceed on the recognition of our partnership,” Federico said. “We want the Italian bureaucracy to accept we should have the same rights of a married couple, as it is in the United Kingdom.” The decision of the tribunal does not mean that Christian and Federico’s civil partnership is now recognized by Italy.

Michael “Mr. Miami Beach” Aller didn’t graduate from Miami Beach High School. But the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce wanted to give him its Outstanding Achievement Award, which is traditionally given to graduates of the high school. Instead of simply changing the rules, the chamber is not only going to give the award to Aller, they’re going to add a bonus: A Miami Beach High School honorary degree. During the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce’s 91st Annual Gala on June 1, Aller will accept the honorary degree, donning a cap and gown for the occasion. “I love Miami Beach,” Aller said. “I believe in education and being of service to the community.” Aller became Chief Tourism Director and Chief of Protocol for the City of Miami Beach in 1991. Early on in his career he also worked at the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. Chamber President and CEO Jerry Libbin commended Aller on his work in the city. “Michael is reflective of everything that is great about Miami Beach. He is outgoing, business savvy, and passionate about this city,” Libbin said in a press release commending Aller. Aller was born in Detroit and his parents were snowbirds. He was in the nursing home business until 1979. He was a snowbird himself until 1980 when he relocated to South Florida. At 73, he lives by himself and has no qualms about it. “When I get home, the last thing I want to do is talk to someone!” he joked. When asked what he would be doing if he wasn’t in the tourism industry, Aller

remembered his childhood dream. “I wanted to be in show business. I stopped because I was too good,” he laughed. Showing off Miami Beach isn’t too far off. According to the Chamber, Aller has greeted presidents and more than 40 other heads of state while working in Miami Beach. Despite not being a natural graduate of Miami Beach High School, Aller agrees the award should still go to graduates. “I’m glad they are stepping out of the traditional awards a bit to give me this,” he said. “It’s a humbling experience. I have lived a charmed life.” For more information on the gala, visit www.miamibeachchamber.com

In the movie ‘The Promised Land,” set in rural Pennsylvania, there is a convenience store named Rob’s Guns, Groceries, Guitars and Gas. The only thing missing to fully encompass the American culture is God. It is not surprising that the flavor of the month’s legislation, gun control, has gone nowhere fast. Republicans love guns, Democrats like guns. And the NRA controls them both. Until this country comes up with an enraged grass-roots movement “a la” MADD we will continue to go our merry ways to the “sporting goods” store next door and stock up on baseball caps and AK47s. Four dead in Benghazi call for endless Congressional hearings and apoplectic reports from Fox News. Twenty children slaughtered in a small-town school are quickly forgotten. Gun owners often say: “People shouldn’t have to explain why we need guns other than owning them is a God-given right protected in the Constitution.” The absurdity of the statement is beyond the pale. God never owned a gun, neither did Jesus, in fact I seem to remember Catholic nuns teaching me the Ten Commandments and one of them is “Thou Shall Not Kill.” And of course this gun toting lunatic fringe is predictably anti-abortion (again the bipolar dichotomy), homophobic, racist, rightwingers who most likely do not believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution either. And that’s ok because for those of us who are in favor of gun control Darwinism is really our best bet and perhaps only hope. Recent newspapers’ reports from around the nation tell us why:
Hickory Daily Record:
Ken Charles Barger, 47, accidentally shot

himself to death in December in Newton NC. Awakening to the sound of a ringing telephone beside his bed, he reached for the phone but grabbed instead a Smith & Wesson 38 Special, which discharged when he drew it to his ear.
The Indianapolis Star:
In Dunkirk IN. a man using a cigarette lighter to check the barrel of a muzzle loader, was killed when the weapon discharged in his face. Investigators said Gregory Pryor, 19 was cleaning a 54-caliber muzzle-loader that had not been firing properly. He was using the lighter to look into the barrel when the gunpowder ignited.
The Gainesville Sun:
A man who tried to shoot a squirrel by taping a .40-caliber cartridge to a BB gun was hospitalized with shrapnel wounds after the cartridge exploded, Gainesville police reported.
Arkansas Democrat Gazette:
Two local men were injured when their pickup truck left the road and struck a tree near Cotton Patch on State Highway. The two men concluded that the headlight fuse on the oldermodel truck had burned out. As a replacement fuse was not available, Wallis noticed that the .22 caliber bullets from his pistol fit perfectly into the fuse box next to the steering-wheel column. Upon inserting the bullet the headlights again began to operate properly, after traveling approximately 20 miles, the bullet apparently overheated, discharged and struck Poole in the testicles. The vehicle exited the pavement, and struck a tree. Poole suffered only minor cuts and abrasions from the accident but will require extensive surgery to repair the damage to his testicles, which will never operate as intended. It can be argued that Poole did in fact effectively remove himself from the gene pool. He would make Charles Darwin smile.

My HIV Diary Closing a Chapter
Here’s to the next chapter... Photo courtesy of tableatny
Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.
Week 37
(May 10 to May 16) In case any of you missed it on my Facebook page, I’m moving to Atlanta on May 25. I fell in love with the people and the city when I first visited it in August of last year. When I went back in mid-April, I discussed the possibility with some friends there, and one month later it’s a reality. While I’m extremely excited for this new adventure in my life, it does come with some problems. It took a lot of thought on my part whether or not to move. I found a job, found a place to live, found a new doctor but I couldn’t find the same medicine study I’m on right now within a reasonable distance from where I’d be staying. The only study that I could participate in is the exact one I’m in right now and there are no such studies like in Georgia … anywhere. My doctor here is seeing if he can get GSK to cover two roundtrip flights for me to at least to make sure I complete a full year on the study. I reach one year in 11 weeks. If not, I have to figure out a way to afford my

transportation back to Florida after already spending a ton of money to get away. The resource groups in Atlanta have been helpful and disappointed that there were no studies around. I was directed to several doctors, resource organizations and social services by the Men’s Information Services: Testing Empowerment Resources (MISTER) but no one had a clue about studies. I’m just worried that I’ll have to quit the study and end up on the AIDS Drug Assistance Program waiting to get medication if I choose to continue my ARV therapy. Part of me is interested to see how my body reacts to not taking the meds anymore. This whole “life revolving around pills” thing is evil, although a necessary evil. With all of that being said, I really am looking forward to hitting the ground running in Atlanta. I know there is so much I can do there both in my work and advocacy life. The opportunity to take what life lessons I’ve learned in the last five years and put them to good use was too good to pass up. Leaving SFGN will be bitter sweet, but as the chapter of my life in Florida closes, the Atlanta chapter is full of blank pages just waiting to be filled. This won’t be the last time you read about me in this paper. I still plan on letting the world in on my life living with HIV. Hell, this move should make an interesting read for all of you. To everyone who has read since day one or is reading this for the first time, I hope you continue to read until there is no need for me to write anymore. Here’s to the next chapter…

San Francisco City of Hope Photos & story by Christiana Lilly christiana.lilly@gmail.com
A group enjoys a day outside on the grass field in the grove of the National AIDS Memorial Grove.
The Castro Theater, open since 1922.
In South Florida, our LGBT claim to fame is the Wilton Manors neighborhood, boastfully the largest gay city per capita outside of San Francisco. During a weeklong trip to the west coast, starting in Los Angeles and driving up the Pacific Coast Highway to the golden city, I had a chance to spend a few days in the city. Sure, Fisherman’s Wharf, Haight-Ashbury and the Golden Gate Bridge (a major flop with all the fog) were on the itinerary, but it was important for me to explore one of its more notorious neighborhoods: The Castro. Named for Mexican revolutionary Jose Castro, a hero of the Stonewall Riots in 1969, Raymond Castro, is also a legendary figure. The city has blossomed from an immigrant neighborhood – Little Scandinavia – to the capital city of the gay civil rights movement. “A lot of people, especially the young ones, have no inkling what Stonewall is. They think Gay Pride is just a big party,” Castro told the New York Daily News before his death in 2010. “None of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for 1969.”

A giant rainbow flag waves over the intersection at Castro and Market, right next to the infamous Twin Peaks Tavern. Open since 1935, it has been a gay spot since its lesbian owners took over in 1972. Most notable are the floor-to-ceiling windows, telling everyone that the clientele’s homosexuality was nothing to hide from at a time when gay bars were still being cracked down on. Also at that major intersection, another memorial is in the quest for equal rights. The first memorial of its kind – an unassuming collection of 15 granite posts with pink marble at the top – Pink Triangle Park remembers the 15,000 gay and lesbians killed during the Holocaust. Though many people are aware of the yellow Star of David patches forced on Jews during the war, homosexuals also had a special patch, a pink triangle. Even though it’s at the busy roadway, it’s a small area of calm, where pink flowers bloom and a triangle of pink stones lead visitors through the 15 posts, each representing 1,000 killed. Together, the 15 soflagaynews //

Castro Camera, opened by gay rights activist and the first openly gay politicians, Harvey Milk, is now the Human Rights Campaign action center and store, as well as home to the Trevor Project. A painting of Milk above the store, where he lived, looks down on the street.

form a larger triangle on the small hillside. The AIDS epidemic, still impacting us today, holds an important part of San Francisco’s history and it has not been forgotten. West of the Castro and at the edge of Golden Gate Park is a peaceful grove in honor of those who lost the battle to HIV/ AIDS and the heroes of the epidemic in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the National AIDS Memorial Grove. An oval pathway leads visitors through a grass clearing surrounded by large trees, purple lupines and other fragrant flowers. Stones bear the names of victims of the crisis, including a large circle filled with names and flowers left by mourners, reminding me of Lennon’s memorial at Strawberry Hills in New York City. During my visit, a man sat at a bench near there, head hung low, and recounted his memories of a friend he lost long ago. My favorite time spent in the Castro was seeing the old camera shop and home of Harvey Milk, known as the “mayor of the Castro” during the civil rights battles of the ‘70s and the first openly gay politician.

Castro Camera has since been converted to a store for the Human Rights Campaign – a pleasant surprise as someone else had told me earlier that it was now a Thai restaurant, something I thought was an tragedy. Inside the shop the walls gave a timeline of San Francisco’s tumultuous history and the story of Milk’s time as politician and assassination in 1978. Over the store, where he once lived, is a painting on the window of a smiling Milk looking down on the Castro crowd with his infamous slogan on his shirt, “You’ve got to give ‘em hope.” The thought that he’s still looking down on the city and egging on change is a nice one. My trip ended in the Little Italy neighborhood at Francis Ford Coppola’s restaurant, Cafe Zoetrope, with plates of pasta and glasses of wine to celebrate the end of a trip up the coast. However, long story short, we ended up missing our flight. Apparently, San Francisco wasn’t ready for us to leave. Or maybe it was just me. I’ll definitely be back.

Another Magical Weekend What to do during OMW and Orlando Black Pride Caity Kauffman
caitykauffman@gmail.com
One Magical Weekend is almost here, and it’s jam-packed with everything except… Sleep. From May 31 to June 2, the 5th annual event, running concurrently with Gay Days and Orlando Black Pride, has raised the bar with the addition of an invigorating, new featured party - WE Party: Wash. “After the demise of a similar event 6 years ago, OMW saw the need to keep the event going as so that we, as gays and lesbians, could celebrate our lives up at Disney,” said veteran OMW producer Terry DeCarlo. “Five years ago we started with just the one party, RipTide at Typhoon Lagoon, and two years later added the Retro-T at Epcot, once again we step it up this year by adding the WE Party on Saturday night.” The headlining event WE Party: Wash kicks off at Epcot’s World Showplace at 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. The Spain-based, traveling party crew has crafted an event for sensory overload, transforming Epcot into a thumping, thriving mega-club with three LED walls and scintillating laser lights. WE Party comes stocked with top-rated dancers, production and popular resident DJ Manuel de Diego, who most recently headlined a Winter Party event at Mansion on Miami Beach. The high-energy celebration runs until 2 a.m. for partygoers 21 and up. Tickets are $75 in advance or $95 at the door. If you aren’t done partying at 2 a.m., head over to the Treasure Tavern for Orlando Black Pride’s ALL BOYZ PARTY. The event, dubbed the Meat Packing District, is a flurry of male exotic dancers and porn stars ready to party until 5 a.m. This year, the host is a fresh face among the Orlando LGBT scene. Attendees are invited to mix and mingle with Lonnell Williams, host of 3LWTV.com. “This year I took the week off so I could have a whole two weeks in Orlando,” Williams said. “I’m ready to have a good day, meet people and see how they do it in Orlando. I’m looking forward to seeing the kids misbehave, or behave. Whatever they choose.” Like many other attendees looking forward to One Magical Weekend and other LGBT events throughout the week, Williams has strong words for social organization One Million Moms that is actively protesting the events.
18
// 5.22.2013 // SFGN.com //
“I just think that people are really going to just protest us because at the end of the day I think they are jealous or intimidated by our fierceness. They will come out and protest but who cares?” Williams said. “All you’re doing is slowing down your own program. Get on board, honey, or get run over.” Producer Terry DeCarlo believes the recent outcry is even more motivation to pack the Disney parks with LGBT pride. “We are asking for, and need, as many LGBT individuals to come to Orlando this year, wearing their red shirts, to stand together so that we may show our unity and to let this group know that we will not stand for their intolerance anymore,” he said. For returning attendees, original OMW event RipTide at Typhoon Lagoon is back for another year of late-night pool party fun. Grab your swimsuit and be ready to go all night with 7,000 of your newest LGBT friends. The opening One Magical Weekend event closes down Typhoon Lagoon from 8 p.m. – 2 a.m. and features dynamic beats by DJ Manny Lehman. According to event organizers, RipTide is a signature evening not to be missed. “RipTide always seems to be my favorite,” said DeCarlo. “Just to see the over 7,000 smiling people dancing on the sand and playing on the water rides in their bathing suits makes it all worth it.” Save a few bucks by buying your tickets online in advance for $89. Door entry is $99, but this year’s $175 VIP tickets are already out of stock. Just as the weekend winds down, the excitement winds up with the closing night gala, Retro-T – the only dance party in motion while Disney’s doors are open. Make your way to Epcot at 2 p.m. for Drink Around the World, featuring a delectable selection of international cuisine and hosts and hostesses from Germany, England, Mexico and Italy. Once you’re sufficiently buzzed, head to One Magical Weekend’s private party at Epcot’s Odyssey from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m., which is topped off with a private viewing area of Epcot’s signature fireworks show IllumiNation: Reflections of Earth. Your $79 ticket price includes a ticket to Epcot and the soflagaynews //
OMW private party. Already have a pass to Epcot? The Retro-T party ticket is only $30. “[The weekend is] electric... Just knowing that you can walk through the Magic Kingdom and other parks, and/or attend other events like the dances on Disney property while
holding your partners hand or giving them a hug without the stares or comments is an intense feeling,” says DeCarlo. Tickets and more information are available at OneMagicalWeekend.com and OrlandoBlackPride.com.

One Million Moms Can’t Stop This Gay Days plowing forward Caity Kauffman
caitykauffman@gmail.com
Call off the mob of moms – Gay Days will be underway in Orlando at full throttle from May 28 to June 3 with pool endless parties, hot DJs, expos and the full gamut of Disney World theme parks. This year marks the 23rd annual Gay Days, but it isn’t without a layer of drama. With turnout expected to be over 160,000, Disney will be peppered with jubilant event-goers showing their LGBT pride in red shirts – something One Million Moms (OMM) wants to put a stop to. The social media-based organization released an official statement insisting Disney cease to host Gay Days – an event the park does not coordinate in the first place. However, interestingly enough, Disney’s recently appointed president George Kalogridis is openly gay.
20
// 5.22.2013 // SFGN.com //
But Gay Days President Chris AlexanderManley, who has been with the organization since its inception, said it’s no skin off his proudly red-shirted back. “Any publicity is good publicity. We have proven the haters wrong over the past twenty plus years. All the lies these type groups told back then have proven how ignorant they are,” he said. “Gay Days Orlando is one of the top economic events for central Florida and has the least amount of problems for an event of this size.” Haters beware, there is one mom out there who has stepped up in defense of Gay Days. Darcy Christ, who calls herself a “straight, typical housewife and PTA president,” has challenged One Million Moms with her own campaign: Millions of Moms for Love. “One Million Moms was the final straw for me,” she said. “It’s time to take action. I truly believe more people come from a place of love than a place of hate.” Her Facebook page garnered nearly 500 likes in its first 24 hours and has continued to grow. The campaign has gone so well for Christ, she was caught by surprise when SFGN asked if she was ready for any backlash from OMM. “I didn’t even think about that. I thought, ‘this is what I believe and here we go,’” she said. “I feel very secure in my viewpoint on this.” Christ, who lives in Dallas, has never been to Gay Days, but her brother-in-law and his partner are sponsors of the event. This year, however, she’s flying out to Florida to get her first taste of the festivities and said she couldn’t be more excited. Christ as a lot to be excited about the weeklong event keeps expanding. Alexander-Manley said Taste of Gay Days in particular has grown immensely, with restaurant and beverage partners doubling from last year. On May 30, event-goers over 21 can enjoy a sampling of beer, wine, spirits and tasty hors d’oeuvres for the advanced ticket price of $25. “Good food, drink, and friends. It doesn’t get any better,” he said. Gay Days 2013 is headquartered at the Doubletree by Hilton at SeaWorld Orlando. There are constant pool parties scheduled throughout the week from noon to 3 a.m. The poolside entertainment stays fresh, with 24 rotating DJs spinning at the main lagoon and the women’s pool parties. who was nominated Best Up and Coming DJ in the 8th annual JustCircuit Awards, highlights the roster of DJs. Its Las Vegas counterpart, now in its second year, was ranked number seven. Gay Days emerged in 1991 originally as a single day, the first weekend in June, aimed to encourage the LGBT community to “wear

Gay Days is estimated to have injected over $100 million dollars into the Orlando economy since its inception 23 years ago. He’ll be bringing his music to the stage of the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach tonight at 8 p.m. The show will include traditional foot-stomping bluegrass standards, newer bluegrass offerings and, of course, lots and lots of Martin’s classic repartee and classic humor. This may just be a night to stay in and watch some television. HBO premieres its tell-all biopic, Behind the Candelabra, that is expected to lay out all of flamboyant pianist Liberace’s dirty laundry – sequins and all. Michael Douglas stars as the nimble fingered musician while Matt Damon portrays the pianist’s boy toy, Scott Thorson. We expect this film will do for Liberace’s legacy what Mommie Dearest did for Joan Crawford, since it’s based on Thorson’s own memoir. Start popping that popcorn because this Stephen Soderbergh epic is gonna be good. Check local listings for show times and channel.

Behind The Candelabra HBO’s Liberace biopic debuts May 26 David-Elijah Nahmod davidwriter@msn.com
Walter Lee Liberace (1919-1987) was once the highest paid entertainer in show business. His uniquely flamboyant act appealed primarily to heterosexual women. The press dubbed him Mr. Showmanship. In his act he would enter the stage in a chauffeured limousine. Swaffed in furs, glitter and jewels, the manicured Liberace would sit at an equally glittering piano and perform what he called a mix of “pop with a bit of the classics” or “classical with the boring parts cut out.” During the mid 1950s, he commanded a salary of $50,000 per week in Las Vegas. At this same time he was paid $138,000 for a one night gig at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He made millions more on television. His hand gestures were grand. Whether they glided across the keyboard, or when he turned to address his audience, Liberace’s hands were like the wings on a bird. The public had never seen anyone quite like Liberace. He took his persona to the ultimate degree. At the end of his performances, audience members were invited up to the stage to caress his clothing, shake his hands, and even kiss him. Looking at clips of the entertainer today, it’s hard to believe that his fan base had no idea they were applauding an effeminate gay man. It was a different world then. People didn’t talk about “such things” in those days. There were scandals. He was “accused” of being gay on several occasions, sometimes by young men who claimed he tried to seduce them. In each instance, the entertainer filed suit, and the accusations were dropped. The truth came out during the final years of Liberace’s life. Scott Thorson, his longtime boyfriend, sued for palimony and published a tell-all book. The much younger Thorson could not be threatened or bought off. He refused to remain silent. He had dedicated years of his life to Liberace and was furious at how callously he had been discarded. But as Liberace lay dying of AIDS in 1987, the two met one final time, and parted friends. On May 26 at 9 p.m., HBO will debut Behind the Candelabra, a biographical drama based on Thorson’s book. Directed by the acclaimed Steven Soderbergh, the film stars Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon

as Thorson. The project reportedly found it’s way to HBO after major studios deemed in “too gay.” HBO’s publicity machine in fact promises to reveal the truth — the whole truth — about a life that Liberace worked so hard to hide from the public. Screenwriter Richard La Gravenese (The Fisher King, The Mirror Has Two Faces, The Bridges of Madison ) chatted with SFGN about his process in telling Liberace’s life story. LaGravenese: “I downloaded a lot of his music. I watched whatever documentary or television footage I could find. But my primary source was the Scott Thorson book, which includes a great deal of Liberace’s biography. Not long before we started shooting, Soderbergh got a hold of the transcripts from the palimony suit and we included those scenes verbatim.” SFGN: What did you find to be the most fascinating aspects of Liberace’s personality? LaGravenese: He had a very strong sexual drive that conflicted with his strong, monogamous DNA. He didn’t enjoy a very active social life. He was labeled the hardest working man in show business, and given his
act, you don’t doubt it. So at the end of the day, he wanted nothing more than to be at home with the one man he loved, to cook and take care of him in a very traditional way. But the times were the times. Sexuality had become more public, much more accessible. For a man who had spent his life hiding his sexuality, I imagine the seventies were something of a revelation to him. Were you in contact with any of Liberace’s family or friends as part of your research? LaGravenese: Yes, Ray Arnett, the man who directed all of Lee’s shows for over 20 years. He confirmed what many others had said, including Thorson, that Lee was a big hearted, generous, loving man. Of course he was also a star who had built his career from the ground up, coming from nothing, so he had a star’s sense of entitlement. He was absolutely devoted to his audiences. Did you encounter any restrictions from HBO regarding the film’s overtly gay content? LaGravenese: Not at all. When I wrote the scene of their lovemaking while Lee does poppers, I didn’t think it would get shot. But I wrote it and it did.
soflagaynews //
What was your process in deciding which events in Liberace’s relationship with Thorson were the best in painting an accurate portrait of who they were as a couple? LaGravenese: What is important to understand, and the reason I was drawn to the story, is that these two men genuinely loved each other. Perhaps at first there were more hidden agendas, but after awhile, I truly believe these two men loved each other. And that had to be at the core of the story or else it’s not real. Otherwise it becomes some camp parody of a relationship. I believe they had a real marriage in every sense but legal. What is your impression of Douglas and Damon in the roles? LaGravenese: I’m very proud of their performances. I think they’re extraordinary. They found the love and the reality between these two men so that the story is moving, funny and painful because it’s played honestly. Look for Behind The Candelabra at 9 p.m. on May 26. a&e theater Miami-Dade Theaters Explore Bisexuality, ‘Complicated’ Relationships J.W. Arnold
jw@prdconline.com
In the alphabet soup—LGBTQIA—that we associate with our community, it’s the “B” for bisexuality that can be the most vexing label. It’s taken decades to convince the enlightened public that sexual orientation is not a choice — we’re born this way, aren’t we? — yet the desire or ability to love both men and women seems to contradict this presumption. Some gays and lesbians resent bisexuals for “having their cake and eating it, too,” benefitting from a sexual outlet and the opportunity to pursue a life within the “norms” of traditional society. For others, labeling oneself bisexual may provide a convenient transitional step in the coming out process, proving in most cases, “it’s complicated,” as the character in one of two plays opening this weekend proclaims. Both Ricky J. Martinez’s world premiere, Road Through Heaven, at New Theatre in Miami and British playwright Mike Bartlett’s Cock at GableStage in Coral Gables attempt to shed some light on emotional and sexual fence bisexuals sit. Road Through Heaven, the second play of the talented Martinez’s Island Trilogy, is set on an isolated island ruled by superstition and follows an unlikely love triangle between Victor (Martinez), Delores (Evelyn Perez) and 21-year-old aspiring poet Jesus (Javier Cabrera). Theirs is indeed a “complicated” relationship as Victor and Delores share their bed with Jesus. The locals accuse them of being “afflicted” and bully them, throwing stones and shouting epithets. The unlikely relationship takes an even more surprising turn when Victor, a machismo sugar plantation worker, proclaims his attraction for the youthful Jesus. Each of the characters is driven by passion,
benefitting in their own ways from the threeway relationship. This fact is accentuated by the staging, with the audience sitting right on the stage at the edge of a white sand beach designed by Amanda Sparhawk. At times, the actors are just inches away as they spit out the fiery dialogue. Director Margaret Ledford gets the most from her cast, even though Martinez’s script still needs some development. Set in contemporary London, Cock is, in some ways, just as unlikely a story. Gay men are familiar with that joke: You never hear about a “bisexual” man sneaking out on his boyfriend to be with a woman. In Bartlett’s play, that’s exactly the case, as John (Ryan Didato) finds himself sleeping with a woman, “W” (Julie Kleiner), who he noticed during his daily commute. John’s older ex, “M” (Nicholas Richberg), is determined to fight for his man. The battle for John’s heart takes place in an abstract boxing ring designed by Lyle Baskin and scene changes marked by a bell and effective lighting designed by Matt Corey and Jeff Quinn. Ultimately, John doesn’t become a prize for either. He enjoys the sex with W but loves M. Even M’s father, “F” (Peter Galman), who shows up for the explosive confrontation at a dinner party, but cannot convince John. The cast and production, under the expert direction of Joseph Adler, should dominate next year’s Carbonell Awards. Adler’s staging of the sex scenes, in particular, can only be described as brilliant, if fully clothed. Didato gives the performance of a lifetime, except at his youthful age there will undoubtedly be many more. His John is truly conflicted, certain of only one thing, the need to define himself. Richberg also gives a sublime performance, a lover who is both

controlling and vulnerable, and definitely a big drama queen. The same goes for Kleiner, whose W sees the opportunity to catch the man of her dreams and isn’t afraid to go for it, remaining in the fight to the bitter end. But, most importantly, the entire cast is convincingly British, going beyond the obvious accents to the subtle

facial expressions and gestures that are primarily found in this country on PBS and BBCAmerica. I have to admit, I don’t get bisexuality, but agree with John, “it’s complicated.” One thing I do know is these productions, and Cock, in particular, should not be missed.
