“2 and a Half Men” Introduces Lesbian Character
Editorial
The character has yet to be cast and there’s no word on who might play it CBS’s hit show “Two and a Half Men” will be having less testosterone in the upcoming Season 11. Angus T. Jones won’t be returning as a series regular for the upcoming season, according to TV Line. His spot will be filled by a new character: Charlie Harper’s (Charlie Sheen) illegitimate daughter, Jenny,
a 21-year-old lesbian from New York. “I think it would be great have that voice on the show from a different perspective,” the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre, told The Hollywood Reporter. “The show has had enough testosterone to last a lifetime.”
The character has yet to be cast and there’s no word on who might play it. “Part of the fun in this has been creating a character that is equal to the task of stepping on the stage with Jon Cryer and Ashton Kutcher. That’s a big job,” Lorre said. Season 11 of “Two and a Half Men” premieres on Sept. 26.
Marriage Would Boost Hawaii’s Economy

spending in the 2014-2016 period should the state’s legislature pass marriage equality into law. State and county tax revenue alone could increase by $10.2 million during that period, La Croix asserts. However, the influx of cash could vanish if lawmakers delay the decision. “The benefits from pent-up demand for same-sex marriages
are time dependent,” writes La Croix. “If Hawaii waits to adopt same-sex marriage, it will not realize these gains. They will be lost forever, diverted to other states that recognize marriage equality.” Hawaii’s marriage equality advocates say the study should build momentum for lawmakers to act. The state currently allows civil unions for same-sex couples.
Pope Francis Says He Won’t Judge Gays

Vatican’s reported “gay lobby.” Referring to gay priests, the Pope said: “Who am I to judge a gay person of goodwill who seeks the Lord?” the pontiff said, speaking in Italian as reported by the Wall Street Journal. “You can’t marginalize these people.” Last February, Italian daily La Repubblica published an article
saying that Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation may have been prompted by the “gay influence” within the Vatican. The story said that Pope Benedict XVI had commissioned an internal, 300-page report that concluded there was “improper influence” on the part of gay priests in internal Vatican affairs.

From gay bars in New York City pouring their Russian vodka on the streets, to celebrities voicing their opinions, the boycott on Russia’s anti-gay laws has gone global. Now, U.S. politicians are looking to step into the ring, fearing gay athletes might be put in jail when they perform at the Winter Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi next year. According to BuzzFeed, Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley plans to introduce a Senate resolution calling upon the International Olympic Committee to formally oppose Russia’s “homosexual propaganda” law. Under the country’s anti-gay law, anyone giving minors information regarding homosexuality can be put in jail. Foreigners can be detained for up to 14 days. The IOC had reiterated its“long commitment to non-discrimination against those taking part in the Olympic Games,” but lawmakers now want the organization to guarantee that athletes and spectators won’t be discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity at the Olympics.
Merkley spokesman Jamal Raad added Sen. Merkley decided to move forward with the resolution after reading comments from Vitaly Milonov, Russia’s sports minister, saying that the law would be enforced during the games. The language of the resolution is still being finalized, however, and it won’t be introduced until the Senate returns from its August recess. In a statement, the Human Rights Campaign commended the legislator’s efforts. “With increasing attention being paid to Russia’s deplorable treatment of LGBT people, we applaud Senator Merkley and efforts in Congress to shine a spotlight on this issue and the cloud that hangs over the Sochi Olympic Games,” HRC spokesman Michael Cole-Schwartz said. Additionally 83 members of Congress, have sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry urging the State Department to do something to ensure the safety of the LGBT Russians, Olympians and spectators expected at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. +Project Runway’s Christian Siriano Engaged Season four “Project Runway” winner Christian Siriano announced he’s engaged to longtime boyfriend Brad Walsh, the fashion designer revealed on July 28 via Twitter. “Yesterday @BradWalsh and I exchanged engagement bracelets!” the 27-year-old Siriano wrote.
Siriano and Walsh, who is a visual and recording artist, have lived together since 2010. “Christian started getting much more into antique and vintage finds,” Walsh told lifestyle blog Byrne Notice. “So the new space sort of became the canvas for that, and slowly the modern furniture
was phased to the office or out of the picture entirely.” According to E News, the couple has also worked together on runway shows, with Walsh creating the music for many of Siriano’s shows. We’ve told our moms so now we can tell you. Yesterday we exchanged
Gay Soldiers Using + Craigslist to Hook-Up in War Zones
Gay service members may be able to serve openly, but sex outside of marriage is forbidden in the military and those looking for hookups are resorting to online tools to satisfy their needs: Craigslist. According to Marine Corps Times, gay soldiers are posting ads on Craigslist to met up and have sex on military bases located in war-torn Afghanistan. The problem is that agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service are now tracking and arresting those looking to hookup. A U.S. Marine lance corporal was tricked in an online sting after arranging a meet-up with an undercover officer -- he was arrested and forced to give up $1,600 in pay and got 45 days of extra duties and 45 days of restrictions. The Daily Mail posted one of the alleged ads, which showed a soldier, said to be based at Kandahar Air Field, in uniform with his genitals hanging out. “Looking for a workout buddy or someone to hang out with, see where it goes. Let’s be honest, we all have our times and if it comes down to it, I want someone for clean, sane, safe and drama free fun,” the ad read, adding he was looking for “m4m.” Retired Col. Dr. Elspeth Cameron Ritchie, a former Army psychiatrist, said soldiers having sex while away on tour of duty is nothing new. “These young men have high testosterone and, with the inability to quietly have a relationship, it is not surprising that they are willing to put themselves into that situation,” she told Marine Corp Times.

Russian Gov. Can’t + Selectively Enforce AntiGay Laws During Olympics
While the International Olympic Committee has reiterated that foreign athletes won’t be subjected to Russia’s anti-gay laws during the 2014 winter Olympics, at least one Russian official is saying otherwise. Vitaly Milonov, the St. Petersburg legislator of the United Russia Party, said the government cannot suspend the enforcement of Russia’s recently approved “homosexual propaganda” law, which he cosponsored, during the Sochi Olympics, the BBC’s Russian-language service reports. “I haven’t heard any comments from the soflagaynews //
government of the Russian Federation, but I know that it is acting in accordance with Russian law. And if a law has been approved by the federal legislature and signed by the president, then the government has no right to suspend it. It doesn’t have the authority,” said Milonov in an interview with Interfax. Just days ago, a group of Dutch filmmakers wanting to make a documentary about the city of Murmansk’s gay life was arrested and charged with breaking the law when police raided an LGBT seminar they were participating in at a community center. Under the country’s “homosexual propaganda” law, anyone giving minors information regarding homosexuality can

While there’s still a long way before the LGBT community reaches full equality in the U.S., the movement has gained more momentum than ever before in the last 10 years, reaching many historic milestones in just the last few months. But some of the younger LGBTs may not appreciate the struggles of their elders so that they can enjoy many of the rights that were denied to them in the past. Here’s where Quist comes in. Quist is a new mobile app that provides daily updates that summarize major landmarks and milestones for the LGBT community in a “this day in LGBTQ history” framework. The app serves to “paint a picture of how far the LGBTQ community has come over time — how we have been treated, how we have reacted, how our allies have supported us, and how others have worked vehemently to stop the progress,” according to its website. The Huffington Post writes that the app “evidences a need for new ways of constructing, remembering and sharing queer history, as the LGBT community continues to make political and social gains and risks forgetting the trajectory that has brought us to this point.”

Zimbabwe President Threatens to Behead Gay Citizens Micahael Cox, Edge Media
President Robert Mugabe Photo courtesy of DefenseImagery.mil
Addressing a rally of thousands of Zimbabwe African National Union supporters in Mutare, Zimbabwe last week, President Robert Mugabe vowed to continue to criminalize homosexuality, saying gay men and women “worse than pigs, goats and birds” and threatening to behead them, reported News Day. Not only are gay people under attack, however. Mugabe also called out men who are perceived as gay and men who live under the same roof and fail to produce children. “If you take men and lock them in a house for five years and tell them to come up with two children and they fail to do that, then we will chop off their heads,” Mugabe said. According to Amnesty International’s 2012 annual global rights report, discrimination is worsening “in Africa over people’s sexual orientation or gender identity.” The organization said that in October of 2011 two men were arrested in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, after being assaulted by mobs for allegedly being gay. Even after the men were cleared of the charges of engaging in homosexuality, Mugabe’s party militants repeatedly threatened violence against the men’s lawyers. One of the main reasons Mugabe opposes homosexuality is that it threatens women’s God-given right to bear children. “Mothers were given the talent to bear children. That talent doesn’t belong to men,” Mugabe said at a women’s HIV/Aids and
gender rights conference in Harare, reported the Associated Press. “When a man says he wants to get married to another man, we in Zimbabwe don’t accept it. We can’t talk of women’s rights at all if we go in that direction. It will lead to extinction,” he said. Still women’s rights are hardly human rights to Mugabe. “Our customs look down on women as inferior,” he said at the women’s HIV/ Aids and gender rights conference. “Men pay cattle and money to get a wife and expect women to obey them. Women will surely lose. Men say that women are not as knowledgeable as us.” In a time where political leaders, like President Barrack Obama and U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, are defending the rights of LGBTQ people, Mugabe vehemently insists that homosexuality is not a human right. Amnesty International said human rights defenders were arrested, detained and tortured under Mugabe’s rule. In meetings with United Nations’ human rights chief, Navi Pillay, Mugabe’s party has denied the existence of state-sponsored political violence, the AP reports. “Imagine this son born out of an African father,” Mugabe said of the US president, “Obama says if you want aid, you should accept the homosexuality practice. Aah, we will never do that.” From our media partner EDGE soflagaynews //

Will Russia’s Anti-Gay Laws Impact the Olympics? By Jason St. Amand, Edge Media
Officials from the International Olympic Committee, who raised concern last month on how Russia’s “homosexual propaganda” laws would impact LGBT athletes and fans during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, released a statement on Friday, saying they have received “assurances from the highest level” of Russian government that athletes and fans will not be subjected to the controversial measures, the stateowned news agency RIA Novosti reports. “As a sporting organization, what we can do is to continue to work to ensure that the Games can take place without discrimination against athletes, officials, spectators and the media,” the IOC said in an emailed statement. “To that end, the IOC has received assurances from the highest level of government in Russia that the legislation will not affect those attending or taking part in the Games.” The organization’s officials added that
6
// 8.7.2013 // SFGN.com //
“this legislation has just been passed into law, and it remains to be seen whether and how it will be implemented, particularly as regards the Games in Sochi.” The statement comes after the Internet erupted when LGBT activists and a number of gay bars around the world launched a boycott on Stoli Vodka in order to protest Russia’s “homosexual propaganda” law, which Russian President Vladimir Putin approved last month. The measure subjects violators to substantial fines and jail time. The law also impacts tourists who can be detained if they break the law. The measure itself, however, has drawn criticism for its vague language; while activists say the measure is used to silence the LGBT community, Russian officials claim it’s to protect the country’s children. The law prohibits individuals, organizations and businesses from sharing materials about the LGBT community to minors. NBC, which will be airing the Winter Games next year, responded to the IOC statement, BuzzFeed reports. “NBCUniversal strongly supports equal rights and the fair treatment for all people,” the statement reads. “The spirit of the Olympic Games is about unifying people and countries through the celebration of sport and it is our hope that spirit will prevail.” BuzzFeed also reports that the Human Rights Campaign were concerned over NBC’s coverage of the event and sent NBC a letter earlier this week with HRC president Chad Griffin writing, “NBCUniversal … has a unique opportunity – and a responsibility – to expose this inhumane and unjust law to the millions of American viewers who will tune in to watch the Games.” While Dan Savage urged his readers to stop drinking Stoli Vodka and several popular gay bars in Chicago, San Francisco, Vancouver, and England also announced they dumped the brand, some are also calling for a boycott on the 2014 Games. An Ohio woman created a petition on Change.org, asking Winter Olympics’ sponsors, like Coca Cola, Panasonic, Samsung, Procter & Gamble, Visa and more to “condemn Russia’s anti-gay laws, which are some of the most repressive laws in recent history, and pull their sponsorship from Russia’s Olympic games. Do these companies want to be tied to an Olympics where LGBT athletes and spectators are likely to face harsh violence, prison, and brutality?” Julianne Howell asks. soflagaynews //
Vladimir Putin Photo courtesy of kremilin.ru
“It’s time for these companies to put their support for LGBT people first, and send a message to Russia that their anti-gay laws are not only contrary to basic human rights, but fly in the face of the spirit of the Olympic Games, which celebrate human dignity and community above all else,” Howell concludes. As of this writing, the petition has 55,142 signatures and needs nearly 20,000 more. “Stand for human rights and pull sponsorship from the 2014 Winter Olympics! State sponsored homophobia should not be endorsed by your company. Tell Putin you do not support imprisoning and endangering the freedoms of gay athletes, fans, family, friends, and citizens!” the sample letter to the sponsors read. Though a number of people have rallied around the boycott, out U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir recently wrote an Op-Ed piece for the Falls Church News-Press, and says that the boycott will hurt athletes who have “dedicated their lives to possibly having their lone life-changing moment.” “To have a boycott would not only negate the career of some athletes who have only one chance at competing at the Games, but also the over-time shifts an exhausted father takes to make ends meet, or the social acclimatization of a brother who can’t go on spring break because his brother needed another costume, or the mother who works
SouthFloridaGayNews
part-time at a job far beneath her, just so she can afford to watch her first born perform for the world,” Weir writes. “The Olympics are not a political statement, they are a place to let the world shine in peace and let them marvel at their youthful talents.” Weir does say, however, that Russia’s treatment towards the LGBT community is “a travesty of international proportions,” he says he will compete in the 2014 Olympics if he qualifies. “There isn’t a police officer or a government that, should I qualify, could keep me from competing at the Olympics,” he wrote. “I respect the LGBT community full heartedly, but I implore the world not to boycott the Olympic Games because of Russia’s stance on LGBT rights or lack thereof. I beg the gay athletes not to forget their missions and fight for a chance to dazzle the world.” Out speed skater Blake Skjellerup backed up Weir and said he promised to wear a rainbow pin to the Games, according to
Daily Xtra.
“If that gets me in trouble, then so be it,” Skjellerup said. “The Olympics are all about diversity and a celebration of humanity, and sexuality is included in that, so I will not be hiding that … Russia will be very focused on putting on a very good show and painting Russia in a positive light.” From our media partner EDGE

Marriage Mayhem
Overturning DOMA Spawns Dozens of Lawsuits
Lisa Keen, Keen News Service
“The lay of the land is getting a bit complicated,” says James Esseks, director of the ACLU’s National LGBT and AIDS Project. Esseks, who was one of the attorneys involved in pressing the case of Edith Windsor –the case which ultimately struck down the core provision of DOMA June 26— was assessing the deluge of litigation that has ensued in the one month since the U.S. Supreme Court issued that ruling and the ruling that let stand a federal district court ruling that California’s Proposition 8 was unconstitutional. “It’s hard to keep count.” In the past month, at least a dozen new lawsuits have been launched all over the country as a result of the Supreme Court decisions. Some seek to end bans like Proposition 8 in other states. Others seek to secure for specific couples in specific circumstances the benefits of marriage that DOMA once barred. Rulings in other lawsuits –those filed before the DOMA decision—have advanced the reach of marriage equality in numerous places in the past month. And, with relatively little publicity, the lawyers hired by House Republican leaders to defend DOMA indicated that, because of the Supreme Court’s ruling in U.S. v. Windsor, “the House has determined…that it will no longer defend that statute.” These are all important developments, coloring in the lines that the Supreme Court has drawn with its rulings, and many are happening in states where civil rights for LGBT people almost never advance in a positive direction.
The ACLU and its affiliates have active cases underway in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. They also have a case with the National Center for Lesbian Rights filed in New Mexico. Jon Davidson, legal director for the Lambda Legal group, has litigation pending in New Jersey and Nevada, the latter of which is already at the federal appeals level. Lambda also has a case in Arizona seeking to preserve health coverage for the same-sex domestic partners of state employees. And Lambda and the ACLU each have separate cases pending (and now consolidated) in Illinois, lawsuits filed before DOMA was struck down. They have announced a joint lawsuit to be filed soon in Virginia. In addition to these, Davidson says he knows of lawsuits filed by attorneys working alone in Arkansas, Hawaii, Louisiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. And news reports have identified an additional private lawsuit in Kentucky. Two of the big newsmakers during the past month have involved cases in two of the bigger states –Ohio and Pennsylvania. In Cincinnati, U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Black ruled July 19 that Ohio, which has a state constitutional amendment banning recognition of marriages between same-sex partners, must recognize the valid marriage license an Ohio gay couple obtained this month in Maryland. In Obergefell v. Kasich, Judge Black, an appointee of President Obama, said there was “insufficient evidence of a legitimate state interest to justify this singling out of same sex married couples given the severe

and irreparable harm it imposes.” The case of John Arthur and James Obergefell garnered considerable attention from the national media, in part because the couple had to rent a charter airplane to transport the men to Maryland because Arthur is in the late stages of a terminal illness. According to the Freedom to Marry group, the men, who have been together for 20 years, were married on July 11 on the tarmac at a Baltimore airport and then flew back to Ohio. They filed their lawsuit July 19 and Judge Black granted their motion for a temporary restraining order against Ohio July 22. “Throughout Ohio’s history,” wrote Judge Black. “Ohio law has been clear: a marriage

solemnized outside of Ohio is valid in Ohio if it is valid where solemnized….How then can Ohio, especially given the historical status of Ohio law, single out same sex marriges as ones it will not recognize? The short answer is that Ohio cannot…at least not under the circumstances here.” Some judicial and political figures came to a similar conclusion in Pennsylvania. There, in Montgomery County, the Register of Wills, Bruce Hanes, said he and other county officials had studied the Supreme Court’s ruling in the U.S. v. Windsor DOMA case and determined it required them to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The county began issuing licenses to same-sex couples July 24 and, as of this
week, a local news blog reports the county has issued 26 such licenses thus far. On the Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC July 24, Hanes said his conclusion was prompted when two women contacted his office following the DOMA ruling to ask whether they might be able to obtain a license. In studying the matter, he said, the county officials felt that the state constitution’s guarantees of equality and non-discrimination trumped the state Definition of Marriage Act. “I swore to uphold the constitution of the commonwealth,” said Hanes. Even before this happened, the ACLU had filed a lawsuit in the federal district court of the state capital July 9, seeking to overturn the state ban on allowing samesex couples to marry. And Pennsylvania’s Attorney General Kathleen Kane startled some when she responded by saying, “I cannot ethically defend the constitutionality of Pennsylvania’s version of DOMA where I believe it to be wholly unconstitutional.” And just this week (July 29), a federal judge in a Pennsylvania district court ruled that the Supreme Court’s decision in the Windsor DOMA case requires a private employer of the late Sarah Ellyn Farley to pay death benefits to her spouse Jennifer Tobits under the federal ERISA plan. NCLR represented Tobits in the lawsuit filed in March 2012, two years after Farley died of cancer and four years after the women married in Canada. Another important case resolved this month by the Windsor DOMA decision was Golinski v. U.S. A Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals panel issued a four-page order July 23, stating that the parties to the case agree that the Supreme Court’s decision in the DOMA case, striking the law as unconstitutional, means DOMA no longer stands in the way of allowing an employee of the federal circuit, Karen Golinski, to obtain health coverage for her same-sex spouse. Golinski had been represented by Lambda Legal. Not every DOMA-related marriage lawsuit has Lambda, the ACLU, or any of the other big LGBT advocacy groups behind it. And not every one is meeting with success. Domenico Nuckols of Galveston filed his own lawsuit in federal court in Galveston, Texas, July 2, seeking to overturn that state’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples. But two weeks later, a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit at Nuckols’ request. Nuckols, who is an engineer, was attempting to represent himself in court. He told the Dallas Voice that he hasn’t tried to marry in Texas and has no plans to do so. He said LGBT legal activists had persuaded him to drop his litigation. But legal challenges are underway in other southern states. With the consent this month of the North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, the ACLU has amended an existing lawsuit, Fisher-Borne v. Smith –one that seeks the right for co-parent adoption— to now seek the right for samesex couples to marry. And the ACLU and
Lambda announced this month they would file a joint lawsuit in Virginia. Meanwhile, a gay couple in Norfolk, Virginia, filed their own lawsuit in federal district court July 18, challenging the state’s ban on issuing marriage licenses to samesex couples. In Bostic v. McDonnell, Timothy Bostic and Tony London, who have been together for 23 years, say the state ban violates their rights to equal protection. And three gay couples filed a lawsuit in an Arkansas federal court July 15 seeking to overturn that state’s ban on allowing samesex couples to marry. The lawsuit is Jernigan v. Crane and the judge initially assigned the case, Leon Holmes, recused himself, saying he has close, long-standing personal and professional relationships with the leaders who campaigned for the ban. In Kentucky, a gay male couple that has been together for 31 years and was married in 2004 filed a lawsuit July 26 in the federal district court for Louisville. In Bourke v. Beshear, Gregory Bourke and Michael Deleon and their two children are suing Democratic Governor Steve Beshear, seeking to require the state to recognize marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples in other jurisdictions. The lawsuit, filed with private counsel, is a narrow one. It does not seek to strike down Kentucky’s constitutional ban on allowing same-sex couples to marry. It only seeks to require the state recognize marriage licenses same-sex couples obtain in other states or jurisdictions. Attorney Dawn Elliott, who, along with attorney Shannon Fauver, is representing the couple, said the legal team feels “it would be easier for the court to rule on this specific issue and we feel that we would get a more favorable ruling if the suit was specific couples, rather than trying to challenge the Kentucky amendment.” “We are planning on filing another lawsuit to address the as yet to be performed samesex marriages,” said Elliott. In a web video interview with Louisville’s Courier-Journal, Bourke explained that the couple, who married in Canada, decided to file the lawsuit because both men are Kentucky natives who love “where we live.” “So, when the Supreme Court rulings came out,” said Deleon, “that was probably the most hopeful day we’ve had in our 31 years that some day we might actually achieve marriage equality.” During the interview, the Courier reporter noted that they were facing “obviously a tough legal road here in Kentucky” and asked why they would put their family, including their two adopted teen children, through the such tough “scrutiny.” “Well, we would gladly not do it if someone else was doing it instead,” said Deleon. But, he added, “we felt like this is just something we needed to do” and “…the fact that we do have children, we can actually cite how we have been harmed and disadvantaged….”

Milk Fights for LGBT Rights in Eastern Europe Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
In the midst of the LGBT community turning the eyes of the nation towards homophobia in Russia, Stuart Milk has been representing the State Department at Eastern European locations, speaking on behalf of LGBT rights. On Friday, July 26, Milk, a Wilton Manors resident who runs the Harvey Milk Foundation, named after his uncle, was the keynote speaker at a human rights
conference in Lithuania. The program, “Towards a European Roadmap for LGBT Equality,” was met with incidents leading to the detention of 28 activists. Speakers at the March for Equality Rally also included the Swedish Minister of European Union Affairs, and prominent LGBT and human rights activist, Birgitta Ohlsson. Her role is equivalent to the Secretary of State for Sweden.
Stuart Milk was a keynote speaker during Baltic Pride.
Speaking to the crowd during the March for Equality, she said: “No government has the right to tell the citizens who to love, nor which identity to choose. We are marching for freedom, and equality, and we are marching for a Europe that will never, ever, accept homophobia ruling our streets.” Milk, like Ohlsson, took to the stage to condemn the anti-gay bill in Russia that has become a focal point of activism in the United States. His family, including his uncle Harvey, has Lithuanian roots. He told the Lithuanian Tribune that Baltic Pride is significant, because “hate and discrimination don’t stop just because you cross a border.” Addressing the crowd, some of whom pelted the speakers with eggs and shouts of disapproval, Milk stated that “They can throw eggs, and from my uncle [Harvey Milk]’s story, they can even throw bullets. They might have the messenger, but they will never kill the message. We are all equal.” According to the Lithuanian Tribune, Milk stated, “If you are an LGBT organization, from Vilnius to Damascus, you are never alone. The world is with you, and in time we will look back on this and say ‘we are history, and we made it happen.’ Equality will be everywhere, and for everyone. We are all human, nothing human is alien, and we will have a celebration that is louder than any voices of diminishment.” Separate from the march, the conference held plenary sessions with a cast of distinguished speakers, including Norwegian ambassadors and Flemish ministers for youth, education and equal opportunities, along with members of the Lithuanian parliament. Stuart Milk has taken his legacy of Harvey Milk to international forums,

such as these. He is often an official delegate abroad for the Obama Administration on human rights. The Lithuanian conference provided an opportunity to evaluate the progress of LGBT rights across Europe, and assess the work that can be further carried out to safeguard EU citizenship rights. Earlier in the month, on July 6, Milk also marched and spoke in Budapest, in support of the LGBT community in Hungary. The 8,000 people who gathered that day faced very real threats from far-right groups who threatened the participants with violence, and have marred previous pride protests. “You have to understand that the pride celebrations in European communities are universal suffrage movements, with people fighting for their fundamental human rights,” Milk explained. “It’s not a party atmosphere. We deal with a large police presence and potential violence from skinheads.” In the end 19 embassies – Australia, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, UK and U.S. - released a statement of support for the Pride event. It read that “Respect for human rights — including justice, equality, nondiscrimination, and freedom of expression — and the rule of law are the foundations upon which democratic states are built. Indeed, international human rights law is grounded on the premise that all individuals are entitled to the same rights and freedoms, as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” Milk gave an interview to the Hungarian newspaper Index stressing the importance of “pride and acceptance, in Europe and around the world.”

Stoli Target Misses Bullseye
Latvian LGBT organization speaks out on misguided boycott
Ryan Dixon
ryan.dixon@live.com
The LGBT community has come out in full force the last two weeks to show their displeasure with the Russian government’s treatment of the gay citizens. With reports of beatings, arrests and deaths of gay and lesbian Russians, gay activists in America have spoken out to condemn those actions. In speaking out, many LGBT community members and establishments in the States have decided to boycott Russian products, most notably Stolichnaya Vodka. Author and blogger Dan Savage has been one of the most forward advocates with his new found disdain for Stoli. He wrote in a recent blog post that in lieu of a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, he would rather “show our solidarity with Russian queers and their allies” by refusing to buy Stoli or any vodka made in Russia. Doing so will “help draw international attention to the persecution of gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people, and straight allies in Putin’s increasingly fascistic Russia” in Savages opinion. Savage goes on to point out that Stoli’s Wikipedia page erroneously says that it is not a Russian vodka because it is distilled and bottled in Latvia. Latvia had twice been occupied, once by the Russian Empire and once by the Soviet Union, but gained independence both times before eventually joining the European Union in 2004. Savage’s main point on boycotting Russian vodka, specifically Stoli, is because the owner of the company is a Russian millionaire named Yuri Scheffler. His company, SPI Group, owns the rights to produce Stoli. Company head quarters are in Luxemburg. But using the birth location of the owner of the company isn’t really a fair reason for Savage to call for a boycott of the product because Scheffler has been in exile from his homeland since 2002. Scheffler is accused of threatening to kill a government official after he refused to allow the state-run Agriculture Ministry to illegally obtain his trademark for Stoli and 16 other trademarks he acquired after the fall of Communism. Scheffler has not returned to Russia since. In an attempt to clear up the confusion that Savage seems to be drumming up, SPI Chief Executive Officer Val Mendeleev released a statement reaffirming his company’s support of the LGBT community world-wide. Stoli has sponsored gay pride in Miami, a sponsorship that came with a $35,000 price tag. In the statement Mendeleev called the actions of the Russian government “dreadful” and that Stoli “firmly opposes” their actions.
“As a company that encourages transparency and fairness, we are upset and angry,” Mendeleev wrote. “Stolichnaya Vodka has always been and continues to be a fervent supporter and friend to the LGBT community.” Mendeleev pointed out that what Savage seems to be ignoring: Stoli Vodka is made in Latvia. Yes, Russian produce is used in the process, but the hard work of Latvian citizens is what produces a bottle of Stoli, not Russian hands or the Russian government. The result of the debate is that protests in several cities have taken place where gay consumers have literally poured out Stoli vodka into the gutters of streets. A Stoli event in New York City was disrupted by members of the AIDS activist group ACT UP. In a press release, ACT UP said members blew whistles, chanted, and held up signs reading, “Russia Kills Gays,” “Boycott Russia” and “Dump Stoli” while Stoli executives looked on. “We need to send a clear message to Russia that the LGBT and HIV/AIDS communities will not send any of our money to a nation that viciously attacks the rights and safety of its LGBT people, including people with HIV and AIDS,” said ACT UP member Mark Milano. “As long as these laws remain on the books, we demand a boycott of all Russian products.” Keeping their actions HIV/AIDS centered, ACT UP asserts that the Russian law restricts the organizations that serve Russians living with HIV and AIDS and prevent further spread of the disease. “ACT UP activists predict that access to safe sex information, sex education, condoms, and AIDS treatment drugs could be designated as ‘homosexual propaganda’ under Putin’s law and jeopardize HIV prevention efforts,” the statement read. “They’re demanding that international organizations like UNAIDS condemn the homophobic legislation.” ACT UP member Brandon Cuicchi believes any organization or company that accepts advertising money from Stoli is just as guilty as the vodka maker. “We question why LGBT companies like Queerty, Edge, and Scruff would continue to partner with or accept any money from Stoli Vodka,” Cuicchi said. “The vodka that Stoli serves to LGBT patrons is served on a platter of Putin’s homophobia and AIDSphobia.” But again – Stoli served in the bar they disrupted is in fact NOT Russian. MOZAIKA, a Latvian organization of LGBT people and their friends, released a statement by Latvian citizen and EuroPride
Photo courtesy of Stoli Vodka’s Facebook
2015 Co-Chair Kaspars Zalitis in response to the growing “Dump Stoli” campaign to correct the confusion surrounding where Stoli actually comes from and enlighten people on their efforts for equality in the former Soviet state. In the statement, Zalitis said MAZAIKA have been very active in condemning Russia’s anti-LGBT actions and called the regression of basic human rights “worrying.” They also say the boycott of Stoli is misaimed. “The international society should act and react in regards to grave violations of human rights in Russia and elsewhere,” Zalitis said. “However it is essential to do careful research before every action to make sure it reaches the addressee of the campaign.” MAZAIKA has worked for nearly a decade to achieve positive change in LGBT rights in Latvia. The organization says they faced strong political opposition but have seen the positive changes. The group successfully launched Baltic Pride in the Baltic States in 2008 and called this year’s pride events the
soflagaynews //
most successful march ever in the Baltics. Latvia stands to host EuroPride in Riga in 2015. Zalitis also points out that Latvia was occupied by Russia over 50 years ago, but they are in no way, shape or form related to their former occupants. “Stolichnaya vodka is not produced in Russia and it is misleading to say that it is a Russian product,” Zalitis said. “All Stolichnaya vodka for worldwide export is produced in Latvia.” While the group agrees that something needs to be done to protect the lives of LGBT people in Russia, they’re pleading with activists to know that their current position isn’t hurting Russia at all. “We would kindly ask you to reconsider your actions in regards to ‘Dump Stoli’ as this campaign will only harm Latvia, Latvia’s economy and the employees of Latvijas Balzamas,” Zalitis said. “It could also backfire and have unintended negative consequences for the extremely fragile LGBT community in Latvia.”

Gay Marriage in Florida?
Not until the Supreme Court paves the way, experts say
Watermark According to the ACLU of Florida, marriage equality will essentially have to be forced on the residents of Florida when same-sex marriage becomes legal across the country. That means equality leaders aren’t optimistic that voters will suddenly rush to the ballot box and approve a measure legalizing samesex unions in the Sunshine State. “I don’t want to build up any false expectations that it would be good to run back to the ballot right now, or that it would be good to think that we should file a lawsuit any time until the hearts and minds change more and the environment changes a bit more,” ACLU of Florida executive director Howard Simon told the Miami Herald In all, 37 states have laws banning marriage equality, which has created legal chaos for same-sex couples who live in those states but are legally married in others. On June 26, more chaos was created when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned part of the Defense of Marriage Act, ruling that the federal government must recognize legal marriages of same-sex couples married in
the 13 states that allow it and the District of Columbia. The ruling also mentions legal marriages from international locations. “Legal experts and community activists at the national and state level are exploring all the options for challenging those bans — legislative action, ballot referendums and legal challenges,” according to a statement released by Equality Florida, the ACLU of Florida, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Lambda Legal. It’s unlikely Florida’s 2008 Amendment 2, which defined marriage as between a man and woman, could be overturned at this time, said Nadine Smith, Equality Florida’s executive director. At least 60% of voters must approve the addition or repeal of an amendment to the State Constitution. Recent polls show a shift in support for marriage equality, but those numbers only reach 54% in favor. “There are two places that we’re really investing,” Smith said. “When you look at the places where marriage equality has come, through the legislature or through
the ballot, it’s preceded by a deep investment of a public education campaign that humanizes these issues.” A petition drive to put marriage equality on the 2014 Florida ballot is already underway and is spearheaded by political strategist Vanessa Brito of Miami. “In three weeks, we collected nearly 40,000 signatures,” Brito told the Herald, adding that if polling in January shows the measure can’t pass in November 2014, she would hold her petitions two more years. The ACLU and other groups believe Florida will get full gay-marriage equality only when the rest of the United States gets it. “The ACLU is working now to secure the equal right to marry nationwide by following up our U.S. Supreme Court victory in the Windsor case with lawsuits in Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina,” Simon said.
“An extensive analysis of the national landscape makes it clear that, given the political environment in Florida, including the decidedly unprogressive state of our federal appeals court, we are more likely to secure the right to marry for Florida’s same-sex couples from victories in other states than by initiating either a lawsuit or a referendum in Florida.” From our media partner Watermark in Central Florida.

Ex-CBS12 Director Gets 10 Years in Underage Sex Attempt Jose Lambiet
A WPEC-Channel 12 newscast director fired after his arrest for trying to hook up with a 15-year-old boy quietly pleaded guilty to felony enticement. He was sentenced to 10 years behind bars! It’s another Gossip Extra exclusive: Christopher Siegert, 30, who produced newscasts for the West Palm Beach CBS affiliate, just checked into the low-security Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Central Florida to serve his sentence. He’s scheduled to be out in September 2021, if he behaves, then be placed on lifetime probation as a registered sex offender, according to federal records. Siegert pleaded guilty to having an Internet relationship with a boy he believed was 15 then driving to a sex rendezvous. The boy, however, was a Boynton Beach Police detective. Siegert was nabbed by Homeland Security

December 20 after six weeks of sexuallycharged text messages and emails with the undercover cop. Among them, Siegert promised the “youth” he met on a gay hookup website to help him make a sex tape. “I’ll be gentle with you,” one of Siegert’s texts read. Judge Kenneth Ryskamp is the one who was gentle: Siegert received the most lenient sentence allowed by federal guidelines. Siegert’s lawyer, Tama Beth Kudman, described him at his sentencing as “lonely” and socially-awkward, and living at his parents’ home in Jupiter. “He still sleeps in his childhood bed,” she said. CBS12 has yet to report on Siegert’s arrest, conviction and sentencing. Originally published August 1 by Jose Lambiet’s Gossip Extra. SFGN and JLGE are media partners. soflagaynews //

A year after her passing, Judy Shepherd’s hard work and dedication to provide for the children of Broward County still lives on. As a volunteer at the Pride Center, Shepherd organized toy and school supply drives and challenged the community to be lovers and givers. With the continuation of Shepherd’s Back to School Back Pack Drive, the Pride Center in Wilton Manors looks to ensure her legacy lives on and children are supplied for the upcoming school year. The Drive, which benefits the Broward Education Foundation’s Tools for School Broward, Started in July and ends on Friday, August 16. On Saturday, August 10 the Pride Center will be holding a “Tools for School Bingo” event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Games begin at 7:30 p.m, The supplies collected will go to continue the efforts of Tools for School – efforts that ensure that teachers in low income schools will have what they need in the classroom. The school supply store set-up allows teachers to shop for free supplies as if it were an everyday store. Each year Tools for School distributes over $500,000 in free supplies. This year’s Drive gained a bit of muscle from two champions of the octagon:

Jessica Aguilar and Matt Mitirone. The pair were on hand at the July 11 kick off event to show their support for the LGBT community as well as reaffirming the importance of continuing Judy Shepherd’s work. Aguilar is an openly gay Mixed Martial Arts fighter who has made great strides for equality in sports in and out of the MMA cage. Mitirone came under fire about statements he made directed toward transgender fighter Fallon Fox. Mitirone was suspended for his remarks, but issued an apology to Fox and fans. His involvement in the drive is his follow through on his efforts to make amends with a community he said he hurt. Drive organizers are asking for donations of some of the most needed supplies such as glue sticks, pens, paper, dry erase marker, crayons and index cards. They’re also offering to do the shopping for those who aren’t as shopping savvy as others. A $10 donation is requested for anyone who would like to help out that way. Coral Springs man accused of trying to meet ‘teen’ for sex Erika Pesantes, Sun Sentinel A 34-year-old man is accused of arranging to meet a teenage boy at the Westfield Broward Mall so they could have sex back at his Coral Springs home, authorities said. But the “teen” who Joseph Gerhart went to see at the shopping mall in Plantation was actually an agent from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement who had posed as a youngster online, according to the arrest report. Gearhart was subsequently charged with traveling to meet a child for sex; soliciting, luring, enticing a child to engage in sex; attempting a lewd act on a child under 16 and using a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony. Gearhart’s Wednesday arrest left his partner of more than 11 years, Michael Comfort, shaken. When he heard the specific allegations during Gearhart’s firstappearance court hear, Comfort was forced to sit down. “I probably wouldn’t have come if I’d known that,” he told the judge. A distraught Comfort later called the
allegations “crushing” and said that even when Gearhart watched reports of child predator sting operations on TV he would express how “vehemently opposed” he was to the acts. “This is totally out of left field for me,” Comfort said, “I’ve no words.” Broward County Judge John “Jay” Hurley ordered that Gearhart be held on $22,000 bond during a court hearing Friday. According to the arrest report, the FDLE agent had been monitoring Gearhart’s online activities on Craigslist since March 26. Gearhart allegedly posted a personal ad looking for men 18 to 28 years old and was approached by the undercover agent who told Gearhart he was a teenage boy on spring break and “new to it but sounds good.” Gearhart was suspicious and asked, “Are you saying you’re 14?” and expressed concern over getting in trouble, authorities said. He later wrote the boy: “I think people should be able to make their own decisions about what they do with their bodies, but I
don’t want to get arrested over it,” the report said. Email exchanges between the agent who posed as the boy and Gearhart occurred several times and, on June 12, Gearhart emailed: “Pick a day next week and I’ll see if I can make it happen,” according to the FDLE report. Gearhart allegedly chose the mall and told the undercover agent, who he believed was a boy seeking sex, “I can be a great practice dummy for people trying to feel things out,” the report said. Upon his arrest, authorities showed Gearhart copies of emails he allegedly wrote to the supposed teen boy and Gearhart acknowledged them as his, the FDLE said. Police Beating at Gay Bar Swinging Richards visitor says cops beat him up and arrested him for no reason Gideon Grudo
ggrudo@gmail.com
North Miami Beach Police (NMBPD) officials have now initiated an internal affairs investigation after Tim Twilligear, a 49-yearold Miami Beach contractor, complained that his tasing, beating and subsequent arrest were all unwarranted. It all went down the night of July 25 when Twilligear and a friend stopped by Swinging
Richards, the fully nude male strip club, after dinner. According to Michael Greico, an attorney and Miami Beach commission candidate, Twilligear was not drunk or disorderly, but had just spent thirty minutes at the bar sipping on a soda. “Tim soberly came out of a club. He was confronted by the cashier — and I’m

dying to see the video on this — and in order to get the cashier away from him, he pushed the cashier away from him. He was instantly tased by an officer,” Greico, who’s representing Twilligear, told SFGN. “A taser is not a toy. It’s supposed to be used to subdue someone after being warned. And then she tased him a second time.” Then the officers “beat the crap out of [Twilligear],” Greico said. After the incident, Twilligear’s friend Victor — who recorded the incident (see for youself, via CBS 4) — was also arrested. Since the case has become and internal affairs investigation, an NMBPD spokesperson told SFGN the arrest affidavit is confidential. But before it became a secret, Miami’s CBS 4 got a hold of it: According to the arrest affidavit, Twilligear put both his hands on the man’s chest and pushed him despite warnings to leave. The report said, and Twilligear confirmed, the officer deployed a taser. Despite the debilitating shock, Twilligear said he tried to leave, but before he could drive off, he claims out-of-control cops smashed his car windows and viciously beat him. The affidavit states Twilligear “exited the vehicle walking toward officers with his hands balled up.” Twilligear said an officer proceeded to brutally beat him. “Someone grabbed me by my head,”

Twilligear said. “I was punched in the head. I have a big knot right here.” “I’ve spoken in person with the general manager and he said to Tim in my presence ‘I saw the video from outside the doorway. I saw you get tased,’” Greico told SFGN. “He was apologetic.” According to CBS, “Twilligear was also taken to jail, charged with resisting arrest, both with and without violence, and two counts of simple battery.” “The cop needs to intervene, not just tase him. The officer didn’t witness anything that happened inside,” Greico concluded. “And I haven’t heard any allegations of any improper conduct inside the club.” This isn’t the first time Swinging Richards is in the limelight. In 2012, SFGN reported that North Miami Beach was trying to shut the nightclub down by claiming it violated a city ordinance outlawing nudity and alcohol under the same roof. This 1994 ordinance wasn’t enforced for years until a gay establishment opened at that location. Swinging Richards lawyers claimed that the club was discriminatorily singled out because of its gay clientele and dancers. After months of a court battle, the city eventually conceded, grandfathering in full nudity at Swinging Richards and two other (straight) clubs. SFGN will keep a close eye on the Twilligear case. Wilton Manors Man Pleads Guilty in Child Porn Case Rafael Olmeda, Sun Sentinel
Confident in your smile?
Christopher Reina Photo courtesy of Broward Sheriffs Office
A Wilton Manors man has pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography after he was caught sending compromising videos to an undercover federal agent. Christopher Reina, 46, faces between five and 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in September. According to federal court documents, Reina logged onto various websites and file-sharing programs using the screen name “huntnpeckr,” and used that ID to communicate in March with a man he would later learn was a federal agent. The agent asked Reina for access to Reina’s files, which were protected by a password. Reina provided the password, and the agent found eight files that contained graphic child porn videos. The boys depicted were between the ages of 6 and 10, performing sex acts with adult men, according to the court files. Federal agents were able to determine
that “huntnpeckr” used a Comcast Internet account associated with Reina. The profile picture matched Reina, and a check of his driver license information closely matched the biographical information given to the undercover agent. Investigators arrived at Reina’s home in April, armed with a search warrant. There, they found a thumb drive containing more videos depicting teenage boys, under 18, engaged in sex acts with adult men. In some of the videos, the boys appeared to be struggling, according to the court files. Reina was arrested and talked to investigators, admitting he was “huntnpeckr” and that he owned the thumb drive found in his home. As part of his plea agreement, Reina agreed to register as a sex offender. In addition to the potential prison term, Reina faces a minimum of five years of probation and a fine of up to $250,000.

My HIV Diary Change in the numbers
Former Director of Stonewall National Museum & Archives Bryan Knicely Photo courtesy of Bryan Knicely
What began as a pay dispute has later evolved into a list of unsubstantiated grievances [ExDir of Stonewall Claims Sexual Harassment, SFGN July 31] by the one full-time employee at Stonewall who was responsible to manage operations of the very volunteers and supporters who paid his salary. Mr. [Bryan] Knicely resigned without notice on the eve of weekend events with a US Congressman in town to support Stonewall nine months ago. This year, Stonewall has proudly produced a new “Season of Exhibits,” recorded its highest public attendance, established a
partnership on LGBT education with Broward County Schools, hosted 13 additional school districts from across the country for a Symposium on issues disproportionately affecting LGBT youth and has announced its second Education Symposium to be held in Los Angeles, March, 2014. In celebration of Stonewall’s 40th Anniversary this year, Stonewall has extended its national outreach programs to include special exhibits, presentations, and events in Chicago and New York, and locally in Miami Beach and Wilton Manors. Later this year more activities are planned in Boston, Provincetown, Atlanta, and San Francisco, among others, all developed to build greater awareness and support for Stonewall’s Museum, Archives and Library. The expertise, policies and procedures followed by all the volunteers in the collection, preservation, and exhibition of artifacts at Stonewall are exemplary. The doors at Stonewall are open to the public free of charge six days a week for all to come, learn, and enjoy for themselves. Tom Tabor Chair Stonewall National Museum & Archives
Each week Ryan Dixon shares his story of taking HIV medication. Photo courtesy of USDAgov
Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.
Week 48
(July 26 – Aug. 1) Having just left my doctor’s office I now have a new rule: never let anyone draw blood on you for the first time. My arm was like a pin cushion after he was done. It’s not like I haven’t already been a practice dummy the entire time for this study. He felt bad but I told him not to worry about it. I had fun at his expense that will be worth looking like a junkie for a few days. My numbers this visit were a little surprising but pretty much on par for the course like they have been the last 11 months. My CD4 count did drop from 745 to 415 but my percentage stayed the same, at 38 percent. My lymphocytes were higher than the last visits so that may have accounted for the lower
T-Cell count. The doctor said I could have had an infection that caused the numbers to change, but since the percentage stayed the same there was no need for alarm or concern. He mentioned that he once had a cancer patient that was HIV positive whose CD4 count once dropped to 20 because he started chemotherapy. But since his percentage stayed the same they knew the number would come back up which it eventually did. Seeing as these numbers are two months old I’m not worried about them at all. We discussed my stomach issues that I was having looked at for possible food allergies again this visit. He told me that HIV medicines boost a person’s immune system which is the reason reaction to food or other allergens can be heightened because the body can finally react to them. I’m thinking my problem is most likely dairy products. I’m doing a little self experimenting to see if I can pin point the problem myself. Almond milk isn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be and it didn’t upset my stomach at all. After the first year is up in the study there are talks about switching to an injectable medicine study. I’m already approved for that study and was asked to switch to it. These next few weeks should be interesting.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class: “S” Stands for “Superlative” Steve Siler Mercedes-Benz exhibited no shortage of audacity when it called its all-new flagship S-Class “the Best Car in the World” as it introduced it to the media earlier this year. With its slick new styling, sparkling LED lights and spectacular interior, it sure brought the wow factor, though for that claim to be anything more than hyperbole, it would have to drive it at least as good as it looked. And after flying to Ontario, Canada, where Mercedes gave me my first chance to drive the big übersedan, which will start appearing in showrooms in September, I can say it does.

But first, feast your eyes. Unlike the last S-Class, which had a pinched snout and clunky contours, the 2014 car’s shape is as slippery as a that wet bar of soap you keep dropping in the gym shower. If you think Audi has a lock on pretty LED lighting, know that the S-Class is the first all-LED car, using approximately 500 of the little guys throughout the car, inside and out. The ambient light-sensitive, three-element tail lamps are particularly cool
as they dim at night so as not to “dazzle” other drivers (yes, “dazzle”—Mercedes’ word, not mine) drivers behind you at a stoplight or in traffic. So considerate.
A Rolling Spa: Aromatherapy and a Hot Stone Massage
We love our leather, and certainly love our wood. And the S-Class has plenty of both (though perhaps not the kind you’re thinking of), with many color choices of each, all arranged in extraordinary elegance even among flagship sedans. The interior design and execution of the new S-Class approaches that of Bentley and Rolls Royce, which is no small feat. There is so much to talk about inside this car that it’s hard to pick a place to start, but among its standout features are its twin 12.3inch color side-by-side dashboard screens, available “hot stone” massaging seats, lasercut perforated leather trim on the seats and dashboard, and available 1560-watt 24-speaker Burmester four-position fullsurround sound system so good it makes
Britney sound like she can actually sing. The four-rear seating packages include two that offer the right rear seater and opportunity to fully recline, legs crossed. The rear-seat monitors have a remote control, or can be controlled via your smart phone. Particularly stunning is the optional silver-stained wood in a two-tone gray leather interior. The cherry on top: an interior aroma release system always keeps the car smelling great, with one’s choice of four available scents. Or you can install your favorite scented oil.
Nearly Drives Itself
So does it drive well? It really does— literally. It would be sufficient if it merely had a fast engine and a smooth ride. But beyond those must-haves, the 2014 S-Class has more cameras than a red carpet blockbuster premier which, combined with radars and other communication devices, help keep it from hitting other cars, pedestrians, and even animals that may cross its path, as well as keep it in its designated lane. Activate the radar cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and the S-Class makes traffic jams and road trips equally pleasurable.
By The Numbers Base Price*
Of course, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class won’t come cheap when it arrives in dealerships this fall. But there are many pricier flagship sedans from other manufacturers that cost as much or more than the $100K-plus estimated base price of the S-Class. Is it the “Best Car in the World?” Well, let’s put it this way: in the 20 years I’ve been testing cars, I can’t recall anything being much better.

Mostly lined with mechanics’ bays, industrial storage, and manufacturing plants, many behind barbed wire fences and high, padlocked gates, few would guess that on West Industrial Avenue in Boynton Beach there lies a small but thriving and growing arts community. West Industrial Avenue? Boynton Beach? Arts District? Who knew? The Boynton Beach Art District (BBAD) is the brainchild of activist artist, Rolando Chang Barrero. In the last year he has sprinkled a little fairy dust on an otherwise grimy stretch of roadway just west of I-95 off of Boynton Beach Boulevard. For many it’s a relief to the eye to see some of the security lights highlighting artists, exhibits, and events, including a monthly open mic, which moves into one of the bays in case of rain. “Palm Beach County’s Only Open Air Open Mic,” shouted the capital letters on the email press release. Held on the third Thursday of the month from 7 to 10 p.m., the program features poetry, music, dance, and more. Beer and wine available. Donation, $5. 422 West Industrial Avenue,

Boynton Beach. The open mic program has been in operation for about a year. According to Barrero it averages 30 to 60 people – both performers and audience. “That’s when it doesn’t rain and we can have it outdoors,” he said. “On nights like this (Thursday, July 18), when it rains, we get between 15 and 20 and we open a bay to stay out of the rain.” “We’ve painted on the buildings and on the doors and planted flowering plants along the sides of the street so people will have the advantage of a queen’s sensitivities making it real pretty here for everyone,” said Barrero, referring to himself and dispelling any doubts whether there were gay artists involved in the project. “We currently have two studios and ten artists in this space and we’ll continue to expand as space becomes available,” he said. “We’re very excited about this place and what it may become.” Barrero’s own studio is called “ActivistArtistA Gallery & Studio. websites are located at ActivistArtistA.com and ActivistArtistA.blogspot.com. Asked about involvement from the Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, the CRA, Barrero indicated that the CRA is currently focused on the downtown and water front locales although they are aware of BBAD. “Perhaps they’ll take a closer look in the future,” he suggested. Barrero was born in Coconut Grove and moved to New York City with his parents at an early age. They returned to Florida where he recalls an awareness of Anita Bryant during his secondary school career, “But it really didn’t have a major effect on us kids in schools,” he said. “By the way,” he added in response to the Anita Bryant issue, “I’m not concerned about today’s gay youth not knowing anything about their history. We lived that history so they don’t have to. Now they have to go on from here.” When Barrero came out to his parents at 15 they threw him out to fend for himself. He

found work at various bars and eventually made his way back to New York where he worked in some of the tougher bars at the time, many of which are no longer there. He also engaged in activism including Act Up!, Queer Nation and more. After New York he spent some time in Chicago where he was involved in the development of the Pilsen Art District – a project not unlike his current effort in Boynton Beach. He returned to Florida to South Beach where he lived before moving north to Palm Beach County. The July 18 open mic had about 20 people, many of whom were performers. Like many open mic venues there was a familial connectedness among the regulars who often bantered with the audience. New comers were welcomed warmly and Queen Rolando of West Industrial Avenue bustled around making sure everyone was comfortable and having a good time. a hospital bed in Iowa with another man sitting beside him, only to realize they were married the night before. The variety will also appeal to audiences who find longer one- and two-act plays tedious: Tony Award-nominated director Michael Leeds contributed two works. The first, “A Lyrical Fable,” features dialogue completely written using familiar song lyrics, while “Read This Play” explores the consequences when a testy playwright terrorizes the artistic director who refuses to read his latest work. A strong ensemble cast ensures a successful run at the intimate Empire Stage, which Rogow notes, “all seats are completely up close and personal.” The cast includes Nikki Fridh, Rayner Garranchan, Andy Quiroga, Gladys Ramirez, Matt Stabile and Janet Weakly, many of whom are familiar faces in South Florida’s vibrant regional theater scene.

Summer Shorts, the short play festival sponsored by City Theatre in Miami, has long been a seasonal favorite with MiamiDade theatergoers. This summer, City Theatre is teaming up with Island City Stage to offer Broward audiences a new festival of LGBT-themed plays, Shorts Gone Wild, opening tomorrow night at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale. City Theatre Artistic Director John Manzelli promises audiences the same fastpaced collection of plays that have made Summer Shorts so popular. “(We’re going to) take six actors, five playwrights, four directors and a design team and whip them up until they peak into eight short, provocative, funny and thoroughly entertaining plays with an LGBT bent. It’s perfect summer fun,” he said. To pull off the inaugural Shorts Gone Wild festival, Manzelli sought out Andy Rogow, artistic director of Island City Stage, the Wilton Manors-based company that has regularly offered plays that appeal to the area’s large LGBT community. Rogow encouraged Manzelli to solicit plays from the region’s many accomplished playwrights, including Tony Finstrom, Kim Ehly, Mark Della Ventura, Michael Leeds and Christopher Demos-Brown.
“We had no idea what we would get,” Rogow recalled. “But, I can tell you it’s going to be a lot of fun,” hinting at the adult themes in many of the works. “A couple are cute, a couple are intriguing, and a couple are just plain fun.” All of the plays were initially too long, he said, acknowledging the unique medium of short plays, a form Manzelli has many years of experience working with at City Theatre. Unlike the more formal Summer Shorts productions at Miami’s Arsht Center, Shorts Gone Wild is going to be more fluid, he said, almost “improvish.” The audience will have the opportunity to pick the order of the plays each night and each play features a color theme, corresponding to the colors of the rainbow, the prominent gay icon. Fort Lauderdale playwright Tony Finstrom’s farce, Mr. & Mr. Smith, makes use of the color yellow as its characters explore the manic realities of gay marriage. The biggest challenge is to hone it all down to 10 minutes. I had a lot of plot, explained Finstrom, who anticipated the landmark decisions on gay marriage from the Supreme Court while writing his script. Finstrom paid homage to the old screwball comedies out of the 1930s, with a story about a closeted film star who wakes up in soflagaynews //

Swinging Richards Moves to Broward Joseph Elliott
When C.B. Jones opened Swinging Richards in North Miami Beach, he never dreamt he would have to spend a small fortune fighting the city to keep it open as an all nude gay male strip club. But he stood his ground and prevailed against the city that tried to remove him from his popular Federal Highway location. Today, though, on its own, Swinging Richards is moving itself- taking its fortunes to a new venue in Broward County. Within weeks, by the latter part of August, Swinging Richards will re-establish its new presence at a spectacular gated facility just off of Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach, at 1350 Southwest 2nd Street. A 12,000 square foot upscale adult entertainment complex, the new and modern location, with ample and secure parking, will be able to offer a full service restaurant as well, which should open by Labor Day. “We have a fabulous kitchen and want
people to be able to have dinner and a show,” said Jones. CB Jones was the first person to open an all-nude male strip club in Atlanta in 1997, before he broke ground in North Miami Beach. Jones said you can expect weekend brunches along with amateur shows, and diverse entertainment. Swinging Richards’ new facility was last operated as the straight Centerfold Cabaret. Jones is enthusiastic about the Pompano location, which can be accessed easily just by driving along Andrews Avenue: “We feel like the political environment will be more conducive and the nightclub more accessible to our Broward and Palm Beach clientele. That and the fine dining component will make our club unique and exciting.” The club’s new manager, Roman, a former DJ, is a gay man who previously managed the Swinging Richards in Atlanta from 1998-2002, followed by a stint with the once popular strip club Cupid’s in West Palm Beach.
