Andy Cohen Boycotts Miss Universe Pageant

Editorial

Cohen won’t be returning as host for the annual beauty pageant

Bravo host Andy Cohen has found a much more fabulous way to boycott Russia’s anti-gay law than pouring vodka down the drain: he’s boycotting the Miss Universe pageant. Cohen, who co-hosted the 2012 Miss Universe pageant with Giuliana Rancic in Las Vegas, said he won’t be doing it again this year in Moscow.

“[T]heir discriminatory policies make it unsafe for the gays who live there and gays coming to work or visit,” he told E! News. “The law is that anyone under suspicion of homosexuality can be arrested,” he said, adding he “didn’t feel right as a gay man stepping foot into Russia.” Following Cohen’s

comments, a New Jersey gay fan of the annual beauty pageant started a petition to get this year’s location changed, fearing gays fans and employees of the organization could be at risk. The online petition has garnered over 27,000 signatures as of press time. The 2013 Miss Universe pageant will take place on Nov. 9.

During the conversation, Chan can purportedly be heard calling homosexuality and other “non-traditional” preferences “disgusting to even think about.” “My decision to record in the first place was that, during the staff meetings, we weren’t really discussing the ordinance

itself,” Stevens told the ExpressNews. “ We spent 80 percent of that meeting talking about how disgusting homosexuality is.” The vote on an antidiscrimination ordinance that would prevent discrimination based on veteran status, sexual orientation, and gender identity for city positions or jobs contracted with the city wil take place on Sept. 5.

of course be looked at very seriously by our very generous system,” Alexander said. He explained that gay Russians would be eligible for asylum because their home country’s newly passed antigay law makes them face persecution not only from fellow citizens, but also from the government. Russia’s “homosexual

propaganda” law makes it illegal for individuals to publicly display anything that related to LGBT pride in public or to provide information to minors regarding LGBT issues. Violators could face fines and jail time. Foreigners who break the law could face up to 15 days in jail and deportation, while companies could get a 90-day suspension.

Local Exec Sentenced to 15 Years Steven Steiner ran one of the state’s biggest frauds Sergio N. Candido

sergio.candido@sfgn.com

Steven Steiner, a former Fort Lauderdale gay executive known for his philanthropist work with AIDS organizations, has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for running one of the state’s biggest fraud scams. According to The Miami Herald, Steiner,61, and his partner, Henry Fecker, were accused of laundering $15 million in ill-gotten profits from a scam run by Mutual Benefits. The company sold $1.25 billion worth of life insurance policies, held by people dying of AIDS, to investors who lost $830 million. Steiner then used the funds to “to support a lavish lifestyle,” buying waterfront homes in Fort Lauderdale and Maine, and a condominium in Manhattan. His attorney, Joaquin Mendez, urged U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams to show mercy and reduce the sentence to about five years, but the judge settled for 15; the prosecution was looking to get a 22-year sentence. The Herald reports Steiner offered no

apology for his actions and said “There were clearly no real winners at the end of this trial,” in part of a 14-page note he wrote, adding “I was ultimately punished for the greed and arrogance of others.” Back in February, Steiner was found guilty of the main money-laundering conspiracy charge along with 18 other counts; a federal jury acquitted him of 35 other charges. That same jury acquitted his former partner Fecker, 59, of all charges.

+Darren Young: First WWE Wrestler to Come Out A- TMZ reporter got the scoop of his life when he inadvertently prompted World Wrestling Entertainment Superstar Darren Young to come out as gay. On Aug. 14, the gossip website asked Young, who was getting his bags at Los Angeles International Airport, if the thought a gay wrestler could be successful in the WWE. “Absolutely,” Young. “Look at me. I’m a WWE Superstar and, to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay, and I’m happy. Very happy.” The 33-year-old performer becomes the first openly

gay WWE wrestler in the organization. “I guess if you want to call it ‘coming out,’ I really don’t know what to say it is,” he said. “I’m just letting you know that I’m happy [with] who I am, I’m comfortable with myself, and I’m happy to be living the dream ... Some people might not like it. Some people will like it. I’m here to please myself. I’m here to be happy ... I’m hoping to make a difference. It’s very important to me to make people understand that someone’s sexual preference shouldn’t really matter. It should be about the person.”

A representative for the WWE told Huffington Post the wrestling organization is proud of Young for coming out. “WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar,” read a statement. “Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star antibullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.”

Gov. Signs Trans +Cali Student Protection Bill

Transgender elementary and high school students in California will now be able to participate in school-related activities corresponding with their gender identity. On Aug. 12, Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that expands anti-discrimination protections for trans students in public schools. Assembly Bill 1266 mandates that transgender students be allowed to join sexsegregated programs conforming with their identity, like sports teams. The Advocate writes that the bill is “the first of its kind nationwide.” “Now, every transgender student in California will be able to get up in the morning knowing that when they go to school as their authentic self they will have the same fair chance at success as their classmates,” Masen Davis of the Transgender Law Center said in a statement. The bill passed both the state senate and assembly last month. California’s new law will take effect January 1, according to the Bay Area Reporter. “While many California school children are already protected by policies in some of our biggest school districts, other districts don’t seem to understand that transgender students should have equal access to all programs and facilities,” Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, a gay Democrat from San Francisco who introduced the bill, told BAR. The momentum seems to be in favor of the trans community. Earlier this year Colorado’s Civil Rights Division ruled a transgender first-grader must be allowed access to the girls bathroom at her elementary school.

Senator Urges Countries to Fly Pride Flags at Olympics

New York Sen. Chuck Schumer doesn’t think the U.S. should boycott the Winter Olympics, on the contrary, he thinks every delegation should show up with gay pride flags. Schumer said on Aug. 12 during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe that Russian president Vladimir Putin is a bully and urged participating countries to march during the opening ceremonies holding rainbow flags. “I’ve called Putin … a schoolyard bully, and the only way you deal with bullies is stand up to them,” Schumer told Mika Brzezinski. “When we march initially, all the countries should wave the multi-colored flag for gay soflagaynews //

rights. That would be pretty embarrassing for Putin, let our athletes participate and still take a stand.” The politician also praised President Obama for publicly criticizing Russia’s LGBT stance and canceling a meeting with Putin. “The president is doing his job by trying to keep the person-to-person relationship OK,” Schumer said. “I thought it was a good move not going to the bilateral.” But it may not just be Russia the one getting mad for the colorful display of flags. The Olympic Committee told Gay Star News that will likely stop any athlete who shows solidarity for LGBT Russians, even if it’s something such as displaying a rainbow pin. “The IOC says it still supports gays and lesbians being allowed to compete, but won’t

Twitter is getting slammed with lawsuits from California and France, demanding that a series of anti-gay hashtags that became trending topics over the past days be removed. The Huffington Post reports the French committee that organizes the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) filed a complaint on Aug. 13 in their country and California -- where the social media company is based -- demanding all hate tweets and hashtags be removed. The committee says nearly 10,000 tweets were posted recently using the hashtag #LesGaysDoiventDisparaitreCar (Gays Must Disappear/Die Because), about 900 of which directly called for the murder of gay people. “This is a completely blatant call for the death and murder of gay people. It is totally unacceptable,” Alexandre Marcel of IDAHO told France’s The Local. “Could you imagine being a 17 or 18-year-old gay person logging on to Twitter ... and seeing messages that call for you to be killed?” Other anti-gay hashtags that became popular in France recently include: #SiMonFilsEstGay (If My Son Is Gay), #TeamHomophobe and, most recently, #BrulonsLesGaysSurDu (Burn Gays On The). Twitter hasn’t responded to the lawsuit. In the past, the company complied by removing inflammatory tweets or turning over data to the French authorities to help identify offenders.

UK Detains Partner of Gay Reporter Who Broke NSA Story Called Unprecedented Attack on Journalism CNN Glenn Greenwald, the reporter who broke the news about secret U.S. surveillance programs, said the authorities who took his partner into custody at London’s Heathrow Airport “are going to regret what they did.” “I am going to write my stories a lot more aggressively now,” the Guardian reporter told Brazil’s Globo TV on Monday in Rio de Janeiro. “I am going to publish many more documents now. I am going to publish a lot about England, too, I have a lot of documents about the espionage system in England. Now my focus is going to be that as well.” Greenwald’s partner, 28-year-old David Miranda, was held for nearly nine hours. He was reportedly passing through the airport on his way home to Brazil after leaving Berlin. Authorities seized his laptop, phone, and other materials. The White House knew the move was coming.

“There was a heads up that was provided by the British government,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Monday. So the United States knew it “was likely to occur, but it’s not something that we’ve requested and it’s something that was done specifically by the British law enforcement officials there,” he said. He would not comment on whether the United States has obtained material from Miranda’s laptop -- and would not say whether President Obama condemns the detention.

Miranda, also speaking to Globo TV in Rio, said agents were asking him questions “about my entire life.”posite effect: to embolden us even further.” I was in a room, there were six different agents coming in and out and talking to me,” he said. “They took my computer, video

games, cell phone, everything.” The detention was reported by The Guardian. Before releasing him, authorities seized Miranda’s laptop, cell phone, video game consoles and USB sticks, Greenwald wrote for The Guardian. “This is obviously a rather profound escalation of their attacks on the newsgathering process and journalism,” he said. “It’s bad enough to prosecute and imprison sources. It’s worse still to imprison journalists who report the truth. But to start detaining the family members and loved ones of journalists is simply despotic. Even the Mafia had ethical rules against targeting the family members of people they felt threatened by.” A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that a 28-year-old man was detained Sunday at Heathrow. The spokesman said the man was held for close to nine hours under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

citizens learned of U.S. National Security Agency spying on Brazil. “This measure is without justification since it involves an individual against whom there are no charges that can legitimate the use of that legislation. The Brazilian government expects that incidents such as the one that happened to the Brazilian citizen today do not repeat.” According to The Guardian, nine hours is the maximum time allowed before authorities must either release or arrest a detained individual. The newspaper reported it paid for Miranda’s flights. While in Berlin, Miranda stayed with filmmaker Laura Poitras, who has worked “extensively” with Greenwald on his stories about the National Security Agency, the reporter wrote. Miranda was returning to their home in Rio de Janeiro. “If the UK and U.S. governments believe that tactics like this are going to deter or intimidate us in any way from continuing to report aggressively on what these documents reveal, they are beyond deluded,” said Greenwald. “If anything, it will have only the opposite effect: to embolden us even further.”

Swedish High Jumper Paints Nails Color of Rainbow …But chooses red after being told it’s against the rules Associated Press The Swedish high jumper who painted her fingernails in the colors of the rainbow to support gay rights at the world championships took the field Saturday with bright red nail polish this time. Evangelicals More Supporting of Gays, Kinda New study shows evangelicals more in the middle on gay rights than before Jacob Long

According to new research out of Baylor College, the number of evangelicals in the “messy middle” — those who oppose homosexuality morally but support equal rights — is growing. Of course, this growth is going to strongly affect the marriage opposition in certain Red states, and perhaps veer the national debate altogether. “As a moral issue, we predict that the opposition to gay civil rights will not have the same staying power as the abortion debate,” study co-author Brandon Martinez, a sociology researcher in Baylor’s College of Arts & Sciences, told Phys.org. From the story: For their study—”How the Messy Middle Finds a Voice: Evangelicals and Structured Ambivalence towards Gays and Lesbians”— researchers analyzed national data from the 2010 Baylor Religion Survey, a random sample of 1,714 individuals across the country. Researchers found that 24 percent of evangelicals fit into the ambivalent category, supporting gay civil unions even though they are morally opposed to homosexuality. The survey, designed by Baylor University scholars and conducted by The Gallup Organization, included more than 300 items dealing with religion and the attitudes, beliefs, and values of the American public. It’s not exactly that LGBT people are now in the “okay” category, but more that evangelicals are losing their interest. An example of this would be the recent stance reversal from Florida native Alan Chambers, who had denounced his very strong ties with

Exodus International, an organization that attempted to help people overcome their homosexuality. Two months ago Exodus issued a statement, which repudiated its aims and apologized for the harm they’ve cause to the LGBT community. “What you have is this increase in people coming out publicly and saying, ‘I don’t want to be a part of this anti-gay rights movement as an evangelical,’” Lydia Bean, assistant professor of sociology at Baylor and co-author of the study, to the Washington Post. “They’re not switching sides from the culture wars, they’re just withdrawing from the culture wars.” Phys.org found “Other research findings about Ambivalent Evangelicals:” •They are similar in biblical literalism and religious practice to those who oppose civil unions, while the 35 percent who are Culture Progressives—with positive attitudes toward homosexuality—are less involved in such activities as church attendance, although they pray privately. •Ambivalents are not as politically conservative as Gay Rights Opponents, but they are more politically conservative than Cultural Progressives. •They are more likely to be married, have lower levels of education, be biblical literalists, and attend church frequently than Cultural Progressives. •They are more likely to believe that sexuality is innate than Gay Rights Opponents, but less likely than Cultural Progressives to do so. •They are more likely to identify themselves as “born-again” than Cultural Progressives are.

A Buddy System for HIV?

Group launches new programs, takes HIV mentorship to new level, and everyone’s raving about it Jacob Long

The Positive Young People Foundation hopes to change the way HIV-positive youth is dealing with its issues. In an Aug. 13 statement, the groups announced its intention to launch Buddy+, which is exactly what it sounds like — youth can sign up and get a year’s worth of oneon-one “emotional support from mentors trained by HIV professionals, all provided free of charge,” the announcement reads. This comes with a toll-free hotline, too. “Being told you have HIV is frightening. Having a buddy, someone who understands, someone who cares, someone you can reach out to when you feel too overwhelmed, makes it not only bearable, but manageable,” said Pam Stevens, PYP’s Boca Raton ambassador. The whole idea comes from Irwin Drucker, PYP’s executive director. “We’d never done anything on the line of direct services. I just felt it was time to take it to the next level,” Drucker told SFGN. “Our whole focus as an organization is on young people, so it was a no-brainer.” But why a buddy system? “We felt that one thing that people really need — there’s a lot of information on what meds to take, safe practices, etc. — a resource on, you know, how to tell your mother you’re positive,” Drucker said. “We felt this would complete the circle — to have emotional support.” Lee Rubin, The Pride Center’s development

committee co-chair noted that with PYP’s Buddy+ system, HIV-positive young people “are not alone.” And Chance Mitchell, co-founder and CEO of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce had this to say: “When onefourth of new cases of HIV in the U.S. are high school and college-age kids, there is no better time to introduce a personalized system like Buddy+ for mentoring, safety, and prevention. Community is the best change maker.” The system even got endorsed by Florida’s Patrick Murphy, the nation’s youngest Congressman. “In this age of reduced Federal spending for many assistance programs, young people living with HIV+AIDS will need to rely more on the private sector for programs that offer free services to those in need,” Murphy said. “PYP’s new Buddy+ program ... is an excellent example of just such a program, offering critical emotional support to young men and women in the early stages of infection.” On top of Buddy+, PYP plans for launch a program focused on women since “many current programs are only available to MSM,” reads the announcement. “Something’s got to change,” Drucker concluded in regards to the way youth are treated in HIV prevention and advocacy. “Programs like this are critically necessary.” soflagaynews //

Breaking Up with Russia U.S. cities called upon to sever ties with Russian sister cities Jacob Long As Russian lawmakers keep landing in the headlines for enforcing anti-gay laws with the Olympics arriving shortly, many U.S. cities aren’t having any of it. From Massachusetts to California, activists with campaign conglomerate Moveon.org are asking their cities to officially sever ties with sister cities in Russia. “It sends a message to Russian leaders and the community that Russia’s extreme anti-gay laws are out of step with the national community,” MoveOn’s Campaign Director Victoria Kaplan told SFGN. “In our communities, we have diversity and we expect that in our sister cities. It’s a conversation that people are starting to have in their own communities.” Specifically, these protests are declaring: “We value and cherish our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender residents and will not tolerate discrimination against our LGBT brothers and sisters by a ‘sister city.’” The movement is garnering some national attention. Newsworks reported that “Pennsylvania advocacy organization Keystone Progress wants Philadelphia to sever its “sister city” relationship with the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod.” CBS reported that “The city of Los Angeles is being urged to sever its sister-city relationship with St. Petersburg amid recently passed anti-gay laws in Russia.” And ABC reported that “MoveOn members from North Carolina are urging Charlotte Mayor Patsy Kinsey and the Charlotte City Council to sever ties with a sister-city relationship with Russian city Voronezh.” And according to the Lansing State Journal, success has been reached in Lansing, Michigan. Florida joins in on the fun with its own Sarasota movement, spearheaded by Daniel Rein. “Please immediately pass a resolution suspending the ‘sister-city’ relationship between the City of Sarasota and Vladimir, Russia,” the petition statement reads. “We can and must send a strong and clear message.” And Florida’s St. Petersburg got hit by a letter from Equality Florida. “One important goal of the Sister City relationship is to encourage travel and cultural exchange amongst the citizens of our two cities,” wrote Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith. “The anti-gay laws

Equal Marriage Florida Launches to Overturn Florida’s Gay Marriage Ban Donald Cavanaugh

donald@donaldcavanaugh.com

There’s no reason why we shouldn’t take both approaches – lawsuits and legislation. They complement each other and if one fails the other may work. But doesn’t it take away resources from both sides instead of focusing them on the common objective? I don’t think so. Some people want to go the lawsuit route and some want to go the voter route and they provide financial support for the method they prefer. I’ve told Equality Florida that we won’t deplete the resources available to support marriage equality.

Vanessa Brito Photo courtesy of Donald Cavanaugh

There’s a new political action committee (PAC) in town called Marriage Equality Florida. It was created shortly before the Supreme Court rulings that returned samesex marriage to California couples and denied the constitutionality of the federal government refusing to recognize same-sex marriages performed in the states. Vanessa Brito, a Miami-based political consultant who ran the successful 2011 campaign to recall Miami-Dade commissioner Natacha Seijas, is the leader of the PAC which she created to overturn the Florida constitutional amendment defining marriage as between “one man and one woman, as husband and wife” to “a union of two persons.” I understand you’re creating a bit of a stir with your objective of overturning Florida’s anti-gay constitutional amendment. I’m a true lesbian – there always has to be drama. But I really believe our approach is the right one. And I say that as a long time supporter of Equality Florida. I’m on one of their steering committees and I think they do great work in the state. Don’t you think it would be better to support one organization rather than creating two?

As I recall, back in 2008 when amendment 2 was being passed, a PAC was formed called “Florida Red and Blue.” Is Marriage Equality Florida connected with that group? No. No connection and I don’t think that group exists any longer. And we don’t intend to exist after the marriage ban is removed from Florida laws and constitution. When you first hit the social connectosphere you were hoping to get on the 2014 ballot but just yesterday I saw a Facebook entry seeking signatures for 2016. Which is it? We had hoped to get on the 2014 ballot because it’s possible that the medical marijuana amendment will be up in ’14. That would bring out a lot of liberal Democrats and students to help us muster the needed votes in a non-presidential year. On the other hand, 2016 is a presidential election and more people come out for that. There’s also the possibility that we won’t collect enough signatures to get on the ballot in 2014 so we may have to wait until ’16, anyway.” Just what are the signature requirements involved? You need 68,000 signatures to get the attorney general to review the language and approve the amendment for consideration. You need 680,000 to then get the amendment on the ballot. With an estimated third of all signatures being disqualified for dozens of reasons, we figure 100,000 and a million signatures will be required to go all the way.

Exactly what does your amendment say? Article I, Section 27 of the constitution currently defines marriage as a legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife, adding that no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state. We change that to read “Only a legal union of two persons shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state.” We also added a second paragraph in section 27 that talks about religious freedom and protects religious institutions from any obligation to officiate marriages between same-sex partners. We felt that was important since so many religious groups have expressed concern for their civil rights.

What’s the situation right now? As of two weeks ago we had 48,349 signatures toward our first 100,000. We currently have 12 co-chairs with responsibilities based on congressional districts or regional locations. You can read more about them on our website – www. equalmarriagefl.com. Any closing remarks? Yes. We welcome support from anyone who wants to support our effort to change the law through the ballot. People can learn more and sign the petition on our website. If they need more information they can contact us at 786-548-5070 of by email at info@ equalmarriageFL.com.

South Florida Says No to Gay Marriage on Ballot in 2014 Eleven LGBT groups oppose the amendment — for now Gideon Grudo

Marriage equality won’t work as a vote — so South Florida figures it’ll just sue the bastards. In a “Joint Statement on the Fight of Marriage in Florida,” eleven prominent LGBT groups in South Florida disjointed themselves from a movement calling for marriage equality to land in voters’ hands this coming election season. The joint statement is in response to a new group, Equal Marriage Florida , that recently launched with the aim of putting marriage to a vote, either in 2014 or 2016. Already the group has gathered more than 48,000 signatures. They need 68,000 to get the attorney general to review the language and approve an amendment for consideration. Then they need 680,000 to get that amendment on the ballot. “It all depends on the variables that occur

from state to state. You need 60 percent of voters to approve a constitutional amendment [in Florida]. We don’t feel we have enough time to change that many minds,” Michael Bath, events director and spokesperson for National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, told SFGN. “You’re talking about educating a lot of people in a very short amount of time — which costs a lot of money.” The Pride Center’s CEO Robert Boo said that fighting for equality through the courts has a track record of success, and has its own side effects. “As we go along we can start changing the public opinion in the more conservative areas of the state. We need to gain some traction,” Boo told SFGN. “We’re seeing that work in other states.” “Realistically, do I think we’re going to win the whole state on a ballot? Absolutely not.” While the presidential election in 2016 might be better timing, Bath concluded, it doesn’t mean it’ll ever be good timing. “We believe that the timing is premature, because the intensive work that would make victory possible has not been done and that a failed effort would set us back at a time of tremendous momentum,” the statement reads. It was endorsed by: •ACLU of Florida •Aqua Foundation for Women •LGBT Visitor Center •Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce •The Alliance for GLBTQ Youth •National Gay and Lesbian Task Force •Our Fund, Equality Florida •Pride Center •Safe Schools South Florida •Pridelines Youth Services •Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce The statement declares that the groups would rather fight for equality through the courts. “...We believe that the fastest path forward involves shifting public opinion and charting a strategy to achieve victory through the courts,” it reads. “Nearly 500 couples have signed up as plaintiffs for a potential lawsuit. A ballot measure should be a last resort, not a path taken hastily.”

Read the full statement: As organizations that work together for LGBTQ equality and justice, achieving our right to marriage is a top priority. There is a strong coalition of local, state and national organizations actively planning and executing a strategy to capitalize on the recent Supreme Court decisions. We are writing to clarify that our organizations are not affiliated with the recently declared efforts to put a marriage amendment on the ballot in 2014. We believe that the timing is premature, because the intensive work that would make victory possible has not been done and that a failed effort would set us back at a time of tremendous momentum. In consultation with state and national legal and political experts, we believe that the fastest path forward involves shifting public opinion and charting a strategy to achieve victory through the courts. We are investing our time in these strategies. Nearly 500 couples have signed up as plaintiffs for a potential lawsuit. A ballot measure should be a last resort, not a path taken hastily. And a deep investment would be required to lay the groundwork for success, especially in our state where a 60% majority is required to amend the constitution. We are not closing the door entirely on a future ballot fight. Fundamental rights by their very nature should not be subject to a public vote. But in a state with a hostile legislature and a challenging legal path, we must consider the possibility of returning to the ballot box to undo the harm. The timing and resources needed to win must be a part of the strategy. We must enlist thousands of marriage equality advocates to join a public education campaign aimed at shifting public opinion in our favor. Our success will determine if and when it would make sense to return to the ballot and will strengthen the chances that a legal challenge will prevail. Addendum from Rand Hoch, president of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council: The Palm Beach County Human Rights Council came out in opposition to the referendum on the day we became aware that signatures were being gathered.

Times are so good that Latinos Salud is having a hard time with its name. “It’s not that we’re going to change our name to desperately add more customers,” Latinos Salud Executive Director Stephen Fallon told SFGN. “We’ve grown five times over since 2009.” That’s a nice way to put it, but Latinos Salud’s latest survey gave officials at the HIV support network a doozy. When the group added Life Coaching to its list of services, Fallon and his think tank wanted to see how many HIV-negative people they would be helping, in an effort to reach out to friends, family, lovers and others otherwise attached to HIV-positive people. So they launched a questionnaire to see the orientation and specific needs of its constituency. Little did they know another part of the survey would prove much more important. In the survey that the group launched (take

it yourself at http://svy.mk/11BEErn), one of the questions was directed specifically at the organization itself, asking the surveyed about whom Latinos Salud services. Many people thought the answer was “Latinos only.” While that may have been the case in 2008, when the group formed to fill a vacuum, it’s far from the case today. “With secure funding and a talented staff,” Fallon said, “we’re just at a point where we can help more people than we originally thought we would be able to help.” What Fallon wants you to know is that Latinos Salud is not just for Latinos, albeit its name being specifically South American. “Latinos don’t only date Latinos,” he concluded. The organization’s services are geared toward the many men in and around Latinos. Here are a few of them: Life Coaching: For people living with HIV or whose partners live with HIV. For this program, Latinos Salud triggered the survey.

PEP and PrEP

One Man’s Experience Sean McShee

littles25@bellsouth.net

Within the last two years, a local 40-something Latino gay man with a middle class job and health insurance was on both PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) and PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis). In these new HIV Prevention treatments, HIV negative people take the same drugs used to treat HIV positive people. As PEP and PrEP represent new tools for HIV prevention, the community needs to become familiar with them, both as personal options and as policy issues. In early 2012, Eddy (not his real name) went on PrEP, following discussions with his doctor about Eddy’s risk level for HIV. He had had a few slips and a great deal of anxiety about becoming infected. Eddy was grateful to be able to talk to his doctor about his risk behavior on both an intellectual and an emotional level. Most HIV prevention treats HIV risk as if it’s either a simple behavioral (use condoms) or intellectual issues (you’re at risk for HIV if you have sex without a condom), but Eddy stressed the emotional aspects of his issues in HIV prevention. While Eddy’s insurance company paid for PrEP, he did find two other barriers, one minor and one major. The only side effect Eddy reported was an upset stomach. PrEP requires people to take Truvada daily for an indefinite period, which drastically increases their opportunities to miss a dose. After a couple of months, Eddy found that he began to miss doses and went off PrEP. Reflecting on his experience with PrEP, Eddy said “I felt it was like a vaccine, that this was a way to avoid having to use condoms. I would not recommend PrEP to others. It’s not 100 percent fool proof. Your risk factors are still there”. In 2013 after a possible exposure, Eddy went on PEP, again on his doctor’s recommendation. The PEP regimen consists of two drugs Truvada and Kaletra. Again Eddy reported no problems with his insurance company paying for his treatment.

In the PEP regimen, Eddy had to take one Truvada and four Kaletra pills each day for 28 days. Eddy had no problems maintaining this regimen, but he did report more side effects: fatigue, upset stomach, and insomnia during this period. Eddy described his emotional state under PEP. “I was a total mess, terrified that I had become infected but I would have been petrified regardless of the treatment. This was a result of the exposure. After the treatment was over, I felt regret for being such a whore, possibly exposing myself, knowing that I could have become infected.” Contrary to the biomedical or behavioral emphasis of most HIV prevention efforts, in Eddy’s case, emotional issues were never far from the surface, which is not surprising given the effects of HIV on the Gay/Bi Male community. According to the CDC fact sheet on HIV and Gay/Bisexual Men, Gay/Bi and other MSM experience a greater HIV burden than any other group. While representing only about 2 percent of the U.S. population, Gay/ Bi and other MSM accounted for 63 percent of new HIV infections and 56 percent of all people living with HIV/AIDS in the US in 2010. Given the amount of HIV infection among Gay/Bi and other MSM, there is much less room for “slips ups” within this community than others. These new biomedical prevention tools offer more prevention tools. Like them or not, we had all better become familiar with them. finance advertorial Be Aware of Key Benefits of Life Insurance

You may be unaware of it, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And while a whole month may seem like a long time to focus on life insurance, it’s actually a good opportunity for you to realize the important role that life insurance can play in your life. Unfortunately, many people don’t have sufficient insurance. A recent report by LIMRA, a research and consulting group, shows the following: • Individual life insurance ownership among U.S. households has reached a 50year low. • Three out of every 10 households (about 35 million households) currently have no life insurance — an increase of 11 million households since 2004. These figures help explain why the nonprofit LIFE Foundation coordinates Life Insurance Awareness Month each September. Simply put, many people don’t realize how many ways that life insurance can help them and their families. To be specific, life insurance can: • Educate your children — If you were to die prematurely, your life insurance policy can pay, in whole or in part, your children’s college education. And if you live a normal life span, life insurance can help to pay for your grandchildren’s college education. • Pay off your mortgage — If you have sufficient life insurance, the death benefit can pay off your mortgage, so your family wouldn’t have to move. • Help pay for your spouse’s retirement — Your spouse might be counting on sharing some of the money you eventually withdraw from your retirement plans — such as your 401(k) and IRA — to help with his or her own retirement. If you were to die early, your spouse, as beneficiary, would receive the existing account balances in these plans, but your future contributions would, of course, die with you. Life insurance can help fill this gap. • Help pay for your retirement — You don’t even have to die to reap some benefits

from your life insurance. If you’ve purchased some form of permanent insurance, such as whole life or universal life, you have the opportunity to build a cash balance. And through policy loans or withdrawals, you can tap into this cash to help you pay some of your expenses during retirement. • Help you leave the legacy you desire — Life insurance can be an important part of your estate plans. To use life insurance properly for estate planning, consult with your legal advisor. Of course, one big question that you may ask is this: How much life insurance do I need? You’ve probably seen those estimates that say your insurance should be worth a certain number of years times your annual income. Actually, there is no hard-and-fast rule for every single individual. The amount of insurance you need will depend on a variety of factors: your age, income, size of family, value of home, employment situation and so on. Your financial advisor can help you determine the level of insurance that’s appropriate for your needs. Now that you’ve seen how life insurance may help you over the years, and you’ve got a sense of how to determine the amount of coverage you need, you can appreciate the message be- hind Life Insurance Awareness Month — so take it to heart and make sure you’ve got the proper insurance plan in place. After DOMA:

SunServe Panel Discusses the Effects of the Windsor case

Jesse Monteagudo

Several hundred concerned community members packed the main hall of the Pride Center at Equality Park to hear a panel discussion on the effects of United States v. Windsor, the Supreme Court case that struck down Section 3 of DOMA: the federal Defense of Marriage Act. “Now that DOMA Section 3 has been found unconstitutional, should we get married? What Changes in the Defense of Marriage Act Mean to You” was part of SunServe’s Silver Serve Speakers Series. The three panelists that spoke were experts in their respective fields: Stephanie L. Schneider, Board Certified Elder Law Attorney; Brett Landsman, CPA; and David Treece of the Treece Financial Group. Together they discussed the legal, tax and financial consequences of the Windsor case on the lives and fortunes of same-sex married couples. “There are certain things that are

incredibly significant right now that we know about. And there are other things that probably still have to be planned for like Social Security and the IRS and taxes,” Treece said. According to Schneider, “the purpose of tonight’s panel is so that the three of us can share very important information to members of the LGBT community so they start to think about decisions that they are going to want to make in the upcoming months and what their rights are that they are going to start to receive as well as the responsibility.” Schneider pointed out the limitations of the Windsor decision, noting that Section 2, which allows states to not recognize other states’ same-sex marriages, is still in effect. She also pointed out that “this decision applies only to legally-married, same sex couples,” not to civil unions or domestic partners. According to Schneider, “federal laws

“I Love You Kaitlyn – A Lot” Girl Proclaims New deals, new twists, new accusations in Kaitlyn Hunt teen dating scandal Jason Parsley

jason.parsley@sfgn.com

Kaitlyn Hunt, 19, appeared in court on Tuesday in an orange jumpsuit, red-eyed, tearful, hand-cuffed and in shackles, while the prosecution laid out their case to have her bail revoked. This was only days after the prosecution offered her a new plea deal that did not include any jail time and would allow her to avoid the sexual offender registry. But after details emerged that Hunt and the younger girl, C.S., have still been in contact, despite a no contact order from the court, the prosecution hauled Hunt back into court and revoked their plea deal, while adding a third felony to the list of charges that Hunt is facing. She’s already been charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior on a 12-16 year old. The new charge is transmission of harmful materials to a minor, which stems from more than 20,000 text messages prosecutors found on an iPod that Hunt allegedly gave C.S. in March in order for them to continue to communicate. Some of the texts include nude photos of Hunt and at least one graphic video. In one such text message C.S. proclaimed her love for Kaitlyn, saying “I love you, Kailtlyn – a lot.” During the hearing the detective admitted some of the conservations were initiated by C.S. and most of most of them were innocent everyday chitchat. However, during some of them Hunt appeared to be coaching C.S. on what to say and how to respond to detectives. In another message C.S. told Hunt she should calm down and go smoke some pot. “Chill out. I’m fucking with you babe. You need to smoke a black and mild or something,” C.S. said. Black and milds are cigars commonly used to smoke pot with. Hunt is also being accused of secretly meeting with C.S., with one meeting as recently as a couple of weeks ago. During at least one of those meetings sexual activity may have also occurred. During the hearing the detective on the stand admitted C.S. hasn’t always been truthful with him, but each time she lied, she did so to protect Hunt. Hunt’s attorney, Julia Graves, asked the detective if C.S. had ever expressed what she wanted to happen to Hunt. The prosecution objected to the question and it was ruled out of order. Hunt was initially accused of having sexual relations with her then freshman girlfriend.

20

// 8.21.2013 // SFGN.com //

Both girls attended the same high school and were teammates on the basketball team. At the time, Hunt was 18 and C.S., 14. Since then Hunt has turned 19 and C.S., 15. Hunt’s father Steven Hunt and her attorney have responded to these new allegations. “This has been an extremely difficult day. But the most difficult and painful part of the day was coming to grips with how these allegations have affected each and everyone of you. For many of you this day may have questioned your belief in this cause, or have given you pause on whether to continue to support us,” Steven wrote on the “Free Kate” Facebook group. We can only ask that you give us a little more time to respond to your questions and the allegations made by the State. Because of the nature of these allegations, our lawyers have requested that we not speak out at this time. They have not had a chance to review the materials and making any kind of statement on what is actually contained in them is premature.” While Graves noted: “As with any high profile case there is great public interest in the various details of the investigation. However, it is customary as the process unfolds that allegations will be made, but they must be proven and substantiated in a court of law. We continue to work on Ms. Hunt’s defense today, the same as we did yesterday and will continue tomorrow.” As of press time Hunt’s parents have yet to make any statements on their daughter having to go to jail until the trial. According Kaitlyn’s mother Kelley Hunt Smith another attorney is interested in helping the Hunt family. “This afternoon we learned that Attorney William A. Korman, an attorney who has been nationally recognized for his work defending individuals accused of sexual misconduct, has joined Kate’s formidable legal team,” Kelley posted in the “Free Kate” Facebook group. “Mr. Korman, who is based in Boston, Massachusetts, was so outraged by the spurious attacks against Kate, that he agreed to become involved in this case based on his moral outrage at the criminalization of what would be considerd typical adolescent behavior and actions. We look forward to Attorney Korman assisting us in this matter.” The latest plea deal included two counts of misdemeanor battery and one count soflagaynews //

of felony interference with child custody, which would have required her to serve three years probation and complete 150 hours of community service. The first plea deal that expired in May was felony child abuse, requiring two years of community control, plus one more year of probation. Many community leaders deemed the original charges and subsequent plea deal too harsh. Kaitlyn’s mother Kelley was not happy with the new deal ranting against it on Facebook. It is still a FELONY plea. They are adding a charge, Kate was charged with 2 Lewd and Lascivious batteries that the state is now saying they will drop to misdemeanor batteries, which is GREAT, however then they want to ADD a FELONY interfering with child custody charge? NO WAY!! Kate didnt interfere with custody that is ludicrous and that particular charge can NOT be expunged per Florida state statue. IF the parents and state are really looking to do the right thing, then pleading Kate to a misdemeanor would be no problem, they will still have a no contact in place and EVERYONE can move on and try to heal from this. But i feel like the real motives here are being shown, they want to ruin Kate’s life, its NOT about protecting their daughter, its

SouthFloridaGayNews

about punishing and hurting Kate, and that is wrong.” Hunt’s case has received international attention with a slew of local LGBT community leaders weighing in on the matter. Hunt’s family accused the younger girl’s family and the prosecution of coming after them because it was a lesbian relationship. The girl’s family, however, said they were simply concerned parents while the prosecution said they’ve prosecuted similar heterosexual cases in the past. In some states though this wouldn’t even be a crime. For instance if this case had taken place in New Jersey, things would have turned out much differently. In Florida the age of consent is usually 18, but the state does allow for some age exemptions. Sixteen and 17-year-olds are allowed to have sex with persons under the age of 24, which means a 23-year-old could legally have sex with a 16 year old, a 7 year age difference, but a 16-year-old cannot have sex with a 15-yearold under any circumstance. New Jersey’s age of consent is more fluid. Thirteen through 15-year-olds are allowed to have sex with someone who is not more than 4 years older. In Kaitlyn’s case the girls are 3 years and 7 months a part, which would have made the sexual acts legal.

‘Amazing Race’ Bonds Contestants and Benefits Broward House

Winners:

First, you find a partner. Then you prepare to get up at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning in the middle of the summer in South Florida. So you can walk, run and race up and down the streets of Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale, and Oakland Park completing remarkably divergent tasks to win a race against a dozen other teams of two, out-dueling them in such physical contests as kayaking upstream against the tide for two miles. Or perhaps simpler ones, like washing two cars for free at the Wilton Manors Car Wash. “Well, that one wasn’t so easy,” Mark Martin of the AIDS Health Care Foundation, stated. “Last year, it was pouring, and we got there in the lead, but couldn’t find a sole to let us wash their car in the rain.” This year, one team lost an hour going to the wrong car wash. It was probably just easier to find the blue light special that day in Kmart. But during the race, you had to get from Kmart to Scandals to the Dunkin Donuts on Andrews and do it without a car, bike, cell phone, or skateboard. You had to run, walk, hitch, and scratch with only 15 bucks in your pockets. Find someone to pick you up hitching on Oakland Park Boulevard in the middle of the day when you are dripping wet and sweating

up a storm, or the weather isn’t cooperating. During the walk from Scandals to Dunkin’ Donuts, the SFGN team of John Fugate and Dilan Hebert got caught in a torrential summer afternoon downpour. They were soaked and dripping wet, when they arrived at Dunkin, charged with the task of finding a customer to buy a dozen donuts. Eventually finishing about fifth, the SFGN team encountered its most difficult challenge in what contestants declared the hardest task of the day: eating a monstrous, habanero filled grilled cheese sandwich near the end of the competition at the New York Grilled Cheese store on Wilton Drive in the Manors. Nineteen years old, young, fit and healthy, Hebert could not handle the sandwich, most of it winding up in back of the restaurant in a huge bucket set aside for that purpose. On the other hand, the next time the president of Broward House, Stacy Hyde, has to fill out a job resume; she can add a new skill set- proficient swallower. Her speed eating of the combustible grilled cheese sandwich allowed her to pass two other teams near the close of the race. She just scarfed those sandwiches down to the cheers of dozens of supporters, all being filmed for YouTube and soflagaynews //

posterity by Lear Barak, the shop’s mis-chefous owner. Another frustration came for a veteran participant when they got to Pride Factory, and had to go through the entire store, trying to match a bar code with a t-shirt. “At least that spot was air conditioned,” said Dominic Grasso, 25, the elementary school teacher who won the race with his partner, behind a strong kayaking start. Newcomers to the competition, he and his partner, Dave Santos, 30, knocked off veterans like Olivia Rodriguez, an accountant, who just fell too far behind with the kayaking wing. She and her partner, Fred Matter, a schoolteacher, represented the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble. They probably did better when their task was counting the number of floorboards in Scandals Bar. Said SFGN’s Fugate, “This thing was more a fitness challenge, not just a race from place to place. We had to walk miles and miles, finishing one task at Steel Gym and then finding a way to the Island City Park Preserve, to find an AIDS quilt.” Following contestants through the race in the sun, seeing them deal with their daunting tasks, I encountered Olivia and Fred a third time, holding a sign saying, “I need a ride back to the Manors.” I asked them if I was even allowed to pick them up again. “Oh, we don’t care if we win,” Rodriguez said, “It’s a matter of pride. We want to finish for the volunteers that helped raise money for Broward House.”

SouthFloridaGayNews

So it was all day. Enthusiastic contestants braving the elements on a hot and wet summer day to raise money for a noble charity, ending it all with cold drinks passed out at the finish line by Carol Moran at 13 Even on Wilton Drive. There was applause, humor, and bonding, as contestants reveled and remarked about their daylong experiences, from wayward kayaks to sudden rainstorms to pacing in the street trying to find the venues. For Dominic Grasso and Don Santos, they can think about it on the cruise they won for finishing first. The enthusiasm for the race remains high, but the contestants each of the past three years have diminished from 30 teams to 20 teams to only about a dozen showing for Saturday’s race, which still benefited Broward House, and required enormous community cooperation and participation from businessman and the city. Volunteers waited for teams with water bottles, ready to pass on clues, as they went from the Wilton Manors Library to the Pride Center to Steel Gym or Manor Lanes. Bowling balls or lifting weights, washing cars or paddling a canoe, it was a challenge in the sun for a good cause. The event was the devious brainchild of Terry DeCarlo, the enterprising marketing coordinator of Broward House, who spent six months planning the circuitous routes, daunting tasks and pleasant events. It was an accomplishment that helps make our community richer, more caring and loving.

My HIV Diary Drinking my information

Each week Ryan Dixon shares his story of taking HIV medication. Photo courtesy of stephen bowler

Ryan Dixon (a.k.a former porn star Kameron Scott) has started taking HIV medication. He’s keeping a diary of his experience. Being in my mid-20’s isn’t easy, add HIV on top of that and we have one hell of a complicated life. I’m making the best out of the hand life has dealt me and the decisions I’ve made along the way. Writing helps free my mind. Hopefully these words will help you understand the plight of others like myself, and inspire you to live each and every day in the moment.

Week 50

(Aug. 9 – Aug. 15) After receiving a low CD4 count two weeks ago, my doctor called me a few days ago to update me on my numbers again. My count came back up to 850 and 43 percent. I most likely had a small infection that caused my number to drop, but again, the important thing is my percentage didn’t change. My doctor and I did have a discussion about another number he noticed a rise in. I don’t recall the specific enzyme or scientific name for how he knew what he knew, but he told me he could tell I’ve had an influx of alcohol intake. I have to admit, I’ve found comfort in a screwdriver or two the last few months. I had one week where I went out drunk four days in a row. I was drinking to forget the situation I had gotten myself into. I was drinking at

home and out. I’ve started to correct that problem this last week. I’ve had maybe four beers and no hard liquor. I’m even thinking of challenging myself to go sober just to see how much better I know my body is going to feel. My weight has been going down like I want it to so I have a feeling that will help as well. HIVers often have a misconception that combining their meds and alcohol can have toxic effects. Last June at the International Conference on HIV Treatment and Prevention Adherence in Miami, a study which monitored patients’ beliefs about mixing alcohol and ART medicines showed half of the participants admitted skipping doses to drink. I, personally, have never done that but I have made the decision not to drink if I’ve taken my meds at night. The study also found that those who believed it was dangerous to mix alcohol and their meds were three times likely not to comply with their adherence. Non-adherence means risking a rise in viral load or a drop in CD4 helper cells. My doctor and I have discussed drinking and he told me this: everything in moderation. This applies to anyone with a chronic disease treated by medication. So next time you see me out, I’ll may be sitting behind a Shirley Temple.

letter to the editor

Seeking Spiritual Advise - Problems at Sunshine Cathedral Sunshine Cathedral is Part of the MCC Metropolitan Community Church. The Sunshine Cathedral is not like the other churches of the MCC. The following is a letter sent to three of the MCC elders, to get spiritual advice on how to handle the unchristian like behavior on the part of Rev. Durrell Watkins and his partner Rev. Robert Griffin. A copy was also sent to Joe Mumpower, a church member who has been mistreated by Rev. Durrell Watkins, his partner Rev. Robert Griffin and some of the board members. The letter was made known to Rev. Durrell Watkins, his partner Rev. Robert Griffin, and some of the board members. Now because it was sent, I am no longer able to serve as a volunteer at the Sunshine Cathedral. I now know it is only a matter of time and they will start to increase their attitudes to make me feel more unwelcome. Not everyone is welcomed at the Sunshine Cathedral, but they sing about how everyone is welcomed. For years I have served as an usher and as a Eucharistic Minister. Even though I kept this private to not let others know of my feelings. The letter (email) that I sent for spiritual guidance, has now caused some of the board members, Rev. Durrell Watkins, and his partner Rev. Robert Griffin to take action to stop me from serving as a volunteer at the Sunshine Cathedral. I never did get my spiritual guidance from the MCC elders, because they do not want to get involved and be associated with this problem. They cannot help me because this needs to be done through the Sunshine Cathedral church. This means there is no help for me and Rev. Durrell Watkins and Rev. Robert Griffin can do as they please, and treat people the way they want, or they can get rid of you if you question their actions. The actions of Rev. Durrell Watkins and Rev. Robert Griffin are an embarrassment to the MCC and what Rev. Troy Perry stood for, when he established the MCC congregation. These two are out of control with their attitudes and this is a gross misuse of their power. I have decided to make this private letter public, because of the way it was used to remove me from the volunteer list by other church board members.

Email to the elders of the MCC Metropolitan Community Church:

I am struggling with issues I am having with the Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale. I am a quiet attendee to the church ever Sunday, for the last 8 years. I am involved in ushering and Eucharistic Minister within the church too. Over the last few years I have seen more of a decline

in our church attendance. I have also seen our services turn more into a bad Broadway show with no real spiritual format. The Minister Durrell Watkins is a poor minister but a great showman. He looks more and more like a hypocrite as every day passes with his actions and comments he makes. I have lost respect for him, because of his behavior towards other church members and now towards me. I have a lot of things I need to talk to someone about, in regards to his leadership. I am struggling to go public with all of this. Another church member has already, Joe Mumpower. I am sending you my response to the article that was written by Joe Mumpower, “Drag Preacher Disallows Free Speech.” The article is about the Sunshine Cathedral’s minister, Rev. Durrell Watkins and the way that he approaches his ministry. It also questions the way in which Durrell responds to his congregational members, when they have concerns about their church; in particular, why so many church members are leaving the church. The author states that the church service is too gay for the congregation and does not have enough of a spiritual format. The article is based off the research done by Joe Mumpower. He indicates how he is unsuccessful at getting questions answers in regards to why so many church members are leaving the church. There seems to be a clash on how a church service should be done. The result on how it is currently being done is that many church members have now left. Joe indicates that Durrell is more like a drag queen and less like a minister. The article reads as a very frustrated church member who is being bulled and not given an opportunity to be heard. He is mainly concerned about what can be done to bring the church members back that have left his church, and how the minister can improve on his ministry way. He hopes that the Sunshine Cathedral can return back to the positive spiritual place it use to. After reading this article, I feel there is a real disconnect with the church minister and his congregation. I never heard of so much turmoil in a church that a congregation member would find himself or herself compelled to post something about it in a local magazine, just to be heard. There have been many changes in our country and views on religion over the last decade and still more to come. We all go to church to feel closer to God; and we want that warm tingly feeling we get, when we feel the spirit flow throw us. It is a nostalgic feeling we all can relate too. Whether it’s a gay church or

straight church, we should not scare off the members, guests, or straight people. In such a way that we are showing them how gay we can be at church. Instead we should show that we could be like any other spiritual church that you walk into, without feeling uncomfortable. The article sparked off a response by the church board, which is the same group of bullies that where unkind towards Joe, when he had first brought these questions up. The response to Joe’s questions or lack of, have resulted in Joe putting this article in a local newspaper, and now Joe has been sent a letter telling him, he was no longer a member of the church. Joe can no longer go to his church that he has invested time, money and prayers for many years. The letter was sent after Joe went north for the summer, and indicated in the letter he could request his membership back in June, at the next board meeting. This would cause Joe to have to comeback to Florida and to try to get his membership back, although he could still end up not being allowed his membership back. This group of people appointed by Durrell, are unfair, unkind, hypocrites. They all walk around with a chip on their shoulder with a better then thou attitude. It saddens me that even in a gay church this kind of crap goes on. I stand by Joe and this may cause me to be kicked out too. I am already getting attitude from those unkind people in charge of God’s home, my church, our church. If you question anything you will be out cased from the church. In conclusion a minister should not have an attitude, but a drag queen does. A separation of the two is needed if you are going to minister. God listens to all and so should your minister. If a member of the church is deeply interested with the church’s going ones and is a contributor to the church with time and money. Then why should they not also be allowed to ask questions and offer suggestions to help their church? People have the right to be heard even at church. A church is God’s home for the people, not a stage for a drag queen want to be. I have many examples of how Rev. Robert Griffin and Rev.Durrell Watkins are not conducting themselves in a Christian way. I also have concerns over a man name Ed Johnson who over sees the church funds. He is a very unkind person. A little while back I obscured bullying that went on with Rev.Durrell Watkins and Rev. Robert Griffin, and some of his board of directors. So bad that I was compelled to speak up to have it stop. Joe recently had had heart survey, and the way they were treating him was upsetting him.

Since then I am now getting attitude and ugly looks from some of the board members. This also includes Rev. Robert Griffin and Rev. Durrell Watkins. At one service Durrell turned to me and sang the verse, “you are a thorn in my paradise” even he later denied it. I believe he did not expect me to be looking at him, when he turned his head to sing that part of the verse at me. His answer to this, when I confronted him was, “I don’t remember what I was singing,…. [and] leave the church if you are not happy with it.” They make it so you want to leave with their attitudes and nasty looks. I did what I thought was right and they are punishing me for it. I may not agree with Joe’s approach to address his concerns, but I do understand why he is asking these questions. The response he has received was very unkind. Rev. Durrell Watkins and some of his board members are now spreading faults rumors about Joe Mumpower, to justify their actions in not allowing this elderly man in the church. Durrell is now spreading a rumor that Joe will come to our church to shoot the board of directors or him with a gun. This is so far from the truth and an ugly, evil lie to cover up their actions, and to keep Joe from going to church. I feel I had no where to turn for help, so the truth will have to do for now. I challenge Durrell Watkins to lie his way out of this. I also feel someone should be looking into how the church funds are being misused, and question those board members that have been put on the church payroll and their past relationship with Durrell Watkins. If I am going to be referred to as a thorn in his paradise, then so be it. Sunshine Cathedral member Guy Jacquez

Homeless and Helpless

LGBT homeless youth face tough life on the streets Christiana Lilly

christiana.lilly@gmail.com

Jamesly Louis didn’t know what he was going to do, but bottled up with frustration, anger and sadness, he knew if he went home after school the way he was feeling, he was “going to do something stupid.” He knew that his assigned counselor didn’t care. The other students who bullied him didn’t care. The teachers who pretended over and over again that it was a harmless scuffle between boys didn’t care. Somehow, the gay 16-year-old boy found his way to his TRUST counselor at Miami Beach Senior high School. Normally there to help students dealing with drugs, she went into action and by midnight that evening, Louis called Covenant House in Fort Lauderdale his new home. “I wrote a letter and gave it to the TRUST

counselor and then she managed to talk to me,” Louis remembers. “All I wanted was someone, some type of connection to make me feel like I was not alone. I really felt that deep down, well maybe I don’t’ belong here; if I’m the only one that’s like that, then why am I here?” Louis, now 22, lived in the shelter for homeless teens for two months when he was 16 years old after he couldn’t handle living in a home where he was ignored, his homosexuality an unspoken issue, and being bullied at school. Unfortunately, Louis was a part of up to 40 percent of homeless youth who identify as LGBT, even though they represent only about 10 percent of the population, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless. soflagaynews //

Data has always shown that LGBT youth have more worries than their straight counterparts. According to a study by the Human Rights Campaign (http://bit. ly/16IYPqD), of more than 10,000 LGBT youth ages 13 to 17 who were surveyed, their top three concerns were their non-accepting families, bullying in school, and fear of being outed. Their straight counterparts said it was class/exams/grades, college/their future career, and financial pressures. “School is just not even an issue if you’re trying to survive,” Mandi Hawke said. “You shouldn’t be concerned about who you are and being accepted and fitting in and bullying and being afraid.” Hawke serves as the director of youth services at SunServe in Fort Lauderdale,

where she runs a teen-friendly space where participants are free to be themselves and voice their concerns. However, it’s not unheard of to receive multiple calls a week from homeless gay teens who were kicked out of their homes or ran away. Unfortunately, SunServe currently does not have a full-fledged homeless program and can only refer homeless teens to Covenant House, where Louis went, or give them provisions. Louis was born and raised in Haiti, a country highly influenced by its Catholic roots, until he moved to the United States at 14 with his mother and four brothers when she married a Haitian man in South Florida. He never discussed being gay with his family, although he knows they knew. Back home,

However, for many organizations such as SunServe and The Alliance, the biggest problem they are facing is a government who is too afraid to take on the issue of LGBT homelessness. Due to anti-discrimination laws, organizations who receive funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development are not allowed to ask for one’s sexual orientation at in take (http:// bit.ly/15Awe3S). Plus, agencies wanting to change their intake forms would have to undergo a massive administration and legislative overhaul for permission. While HUD’s ban may be well meaning to prevent discrimination, Silva believes it’s another situation of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. “It’s short sighted. They really don’t understand that without having this information, we don’t have the full scope of the problem,” Silva said. This past school year, Silva spoke with a staff member at Miami-Dade Public Schools who said that there were 270 students who were unaccompanied -- not living Jamesly Louis, 22, became homeless when he was 16 years old. Carla Silva, the executive director with that organization. Silva and Hawke are of the Alliance for GLBTQ Youth, a both actively involved in training staffers at collaboration of organizations that different shelters and organizations on how work to nurture LGBT youth, including to deal with LGBT people. “There’s either people who don’t want services, counseling and advocacy. “Of all the young people that engage in our anything to do with it, period, and then services, on average, 20 percent of them tell there’s people who are very well meaning us that they’re not safe at home, that they but they just don’t know how to ask the need a safe place to live, or that they have question,” Hawke said. In one case, a lesbian teen was been thrown out or run away -- and that is accidentally placed in a home with a

homophobic foster parent who told her she wouldn’t have taken her if she knew she was gay. In shelters, transgender clients are often placed by their assigned gender -- even if a biological man comes in dressed as a woman, has a female name, and identifies as a woman, she would be placed with the men. While staff can be trained, it’s difficult to protect someone from other clients who may be homophobic and violent. Silva remembers a case of a transgender girl at a Miami teen shelter who kept returning to the shelter to the frustration of staff. Not only was she housed with boys -where she didn’t feel safe -- but she also was only given male clothing and was referred to as a male. “She definitely felt like her identity was under attack on a regular basis, but also her parents would say, ‘Well as long as she dressed like a boy... I would take her home,’” Silva said. Staff encouraged her to dress like a boy and considered her to be defiant when she wouldn’t do so. Every time her father picked her up, she was kicked out of the car when she refused to act like a boy. Finally, she left Miami and Silva does not know what happened to her -- a heartbreaking part of being in the field. When Hawke refers teens to other organizations, due to privacy issues she cannot follow up on the condition of the teen. It’s also nearly impossible for the teen

to update her since many end up borrowing phones from friends or businesses. She referred one teen to Covenant House who had moved to Florida to escape his homophobic home only to wind up staying with a group of supposed friends who told him he couldn’t stay with them unless he had sex with all of them. “It’s awful,” Hawke says about not knowing what happens to the teens she tries to help. “I hope and I send all the good energy that they have made the connection necessary... most often I don’t hear what actually happened, so that is what really fuels us to have our own program that way I will know they got the care needed.” For Louis, he did get the care that he needed from his school’s TRUST counselor. She called Pridelines Youth Services, who referred the then-16-year-old boy to Covenant House. He went to his empty home, threw everything he needed in a bag, and made the two-hour bus ride from Miami to Fort Lauderdale. For much of the ride, it was just him and the bus driver, watching city after city pass, miles separating him from the home he couldn’t stand and a strange place he could only have faith would help him. By midnight he arrived at the shelter to go through paperwork and start a new life. This is the first of a two-part series by South Florida Gay News on LGBT teen homelessness in South Florida.

Rant From the Edge of Canada In search of the defining word

Ok, why should one get married? Contribute to the welfare of divorce lawyers, wedding planners, liberal churches and party venues? When you live together in a romantic relationship, you become known as a social unit; Horace and Joe, Mary and Gwendolyn, Bob and Seth. The first time I got married was

immediately after Canada legalized same-sex marriage and it was after 30 years of living in sin, as they say. However, the reasons for it at the time were entirely legal. Although we had done all the necessary contracts, there was still a strong chance that any of our agreements could be challenged after one of our deaths, by the surviving family.

What are they? Boyfriends? Lovers? Partners? Husbands? Photo courtesy of Jose Antonio Navas

There was still the chance that somewhere in the world a repeat performance would be held of being denied access to my partner in a hospital and in his crucial medical decisions. I mean, who travels with reams of 100 page contracts and who in hospital admitting facilities can read and understand those documents, especially if they’re in another language? Much to our surprise, even after 30 years together, our marriage defined our status, who we were; it put parameters around it so that it fit nicely into the square box everyone seems to need and crave, including us. We felt closer and more united because of this definition. We took an invisible, nebulous state and built walls and a roof around it and made ourselves a permanent unit, both socially and legally but more importantly, in our minds. We owe our loved one the legal status, access, identity and power that legal marriage gives. We can write out contracts until the cows come home, but nothing protects and defines like Government recognized marriage. Much more importantly, nothing else gives one the visible and tangible feeling of being part of an even stronger partnership unit. When you’re 10 or 15 and have a boyfriend or girlfriend it’s lovely. When you’re 50 and have a boyfriend or girlfriend, it’s just juvenile and meaningless. My only problem with all this is that we need new defining words. I fall over calling

my man my husband, and he’s certainly not my wife. I choke when women with women refer to each other as wives. I laugh when a mature, straight, or gay, unmarried couple refers to each other as boyfriend or girlfriend. I felt stupid at 65 calling Trevor my boyfriend. I look at my 65 plus year brother referring to his 65 plus mate as his girlfriend and shake my head. Give me a break - give me a new word! Partner works to some extent for introductions, but are they in love or practicing law together? Who knows? Humans need to put square pegs in square holes, etc. It seems to me that two mature people who have lived together for years with two houses, two cars and two dogs are more than boyfriends or girlfriends. In the UK the newly recognized samesex marriage will play havoc with the titles system. Will it be Lord X and his husband Lord Y, or Lady Y even though men can’t be ladies...? It’ll be absolute pandemonium at the palace. How will my new ‘husband’ introduce me to the neighbors in our new straight Sarasota neighborhood? His husband, boyfriend, fuckfriend, partner? None fit reality. And so endeth today’s lesson. Now, where can I hide my soapbox? The author is Stephen Berridge, resident of Quebec, Sir George Williams University, Montreal, retired, and spends time in South Florida with his newly married ( in Canada) American partner.

Trans Diva Drama At GMHC’s 23rd Annual Latex Ball dried up and the Latex Project became inactive, GMHC continued to back the ball helping new generations play together wisely. Today, the Latex Ball is not a GMHC fundraiser, but rather an intervention tied to a long-standing social and cultural event. In the context of the Latex Ball, young gay men learn from their “House mothers and

fathers” how to celebrate without the selfdestructive behavior that can lead to HIV/ AIDS. GMHC provides free HIV testing at the event and continues to seek government, corporate and foundation support to cover the cost of producing the event, one of the largest balls in the Untied States. Visit GMHC.org for more information.

High drama scorched the runway of New York City’s huge performance space, Terminal 5, on August 17, at the 23rd annual Latex Ball, an event sponsored by GMHC (Gay Mens Health Crisis.) A trans woman, Mariah Lopez, was denied the right to “walk” in one of the categories, “Women’s Performance” which seemed to have been reserved for cis-gendered females only. An operatic melee of divas who rushed the runway, grabbed microphones and demanded their rights as “real women” delighted the crowd. Screams of “Let her walk!” eventually prevailed. Lopez was soon trounced by fierce competition from other women, including contenders from Russia and Japan. The moment was part of the typical fun of the Latex Ball that attracts a gender-

fluid international crowd of dazzling performers in categories such as “Realness With A Twist,” “Legendary Face” and “Big Girl Realness.” The Latex Project was founded in the late 80s by members of the House and Ballroom communities alarmed by too many AIDSrelated deaths and increases in new HIV infection rates among their friends and community members. They asked GMHC to help raise awareness about prevention and to provide support for those living with HIV/AIDS. Together, GMHC staff and leaders of the House and Ballroom communities created the Latex Project and the House of Latex Ball. For 23 years, GMHC has remained committed to this work. Just a Minute! Check out the 2013 BMW 328i M-Sport The ubiquitous BMW 3-Series may be the least clever automotive choice a gay man or woman can make. Seriously the 3-Series is as common as gourmet jeans at a gay cocktail party or ribbed tank tops at Golds Gym. But there’s a reason we flock to this car: it’s really, really good. For 2013, the 3-Series has become even better. While not everyone I know (myself included) thinks this latest model is the best-looking 3-Series ever, even with the M-Sport package’s slick aero kit, I can say without equivocation that it is as divine to drive as it’s ever been. The standard 240hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers stronger acceleration than its low cylinder count might suggest, and the rearwheel drive layout and sparkling steering make for corner-carving perfection. The

3-Series is none too spacious inside, and it’s certainly not cheap (prices swell to over $50K quite quickly once a few options are selected, my tester rang in near $46K and was still missing navigation) but fuel economy is outstanding, and few cars can touch it in terms of the way it communicates with its driver. It’s the kind of car that makes you proud as you walk up to it in a parking lot. If you can remember which one is yours. Renowned automotive journalist and gay car geek Steve Siler has turned his life-long love of cars into a fruitful and enthusiastic career traveling the world to test thousands of new vehicles as they are introduced. Siler is s regular contributor to Car and Driver Magazine, Edmunds.com, AutoTrader. com, AOL Autos and Yahoo! Autos, and also pioneered automotive writing for the GLBT community more than a decade ago.

Don’t Gotta Be a Bowler to Win the Boal-A-Thon

Poverello Center’s initiative yields big winners but misses goal Jacob Long

Edward “Eddie” Lake of Wilton Manors raised the most money for Aug. 3’s Bowling to Fight Hunger, a fundraising event from the Poverello Center. He raised $1,013. Photo courtesy of Edward Lake

Edward Lake — who goes by Eddie — wasn’t even paying attention to his score and has no idea how it all tallied up on Aug. 3. It was Bowling to Fight Hunger, the charity event comes from Poverello Center that pits fundraising teams against each other in a full tournament of bowling — months after each team works to raise money to fight hunger. On Friday at Rumors Bar, Lake received a prize for raising the most money for the event — a whopping $1,013. Lake won’t just receive bragging rights though. His real prize includes a three-day and two-night stay in deluxe accommodations at the Seminole Hard Rock Resort and Casino located in Hollywood Florida. But still, he’s not the best bowler. His team, the eloquently named Brittney Spares, was the top raising team with a total of $2,188. The event itself, however, was less successful than hoped, and raised just under a third of its $150,000 goal: $48,434. “I’m really good at raising money,” Lake

told SFGN. “But I suck at bowling.” That’s the line he stuck with during the Saturday event, admitting to some that his mother was a professional bowler, though she passed away when he was eight, just shy of imparting on him her bowling wisdom. How did he do it? “Relenteless badgering on Facebook,” he said, “and calling everyone I knew in the country.” To Lake, raising money for Poverello was a personal mission of paying a personal debt of sorts, and giving back to the organization that helped him out when he first moved down to Wilton Manors. He came in 2007, HIV-positive, fresh out of rehab for drug abuse, on disability, and without enough money to put food on the table. That’s where Poverello came in, a recommendation that Lake’s case managers at Care Resource made. “There’s no other place around in Wilton Manors that doesn’t discriminate against people with HIV and helps people out with food,” Lake said. “That’s amazing because people really need that help sometimes and I was a perfect example.” Lake, who’s since worked for AHF, is currently a full-time online student, focusing on psychology and sociology, and wants to work with newly diagnosed HIV positive people who are also alcoholics and addicts. While Lake was on the Brittney Spares team, which on top of his achievement was the highest-earning team, it won’t be recognized as such. That honor will go to Team Unity Power of Strength (which was technically the second highest earning team), the event’s face for Unity Church. “They represent Unity Church, [which] formed the most teams and raised the most money among all the organizations that were part of the Bowl-A-Thon,” Poverello Center’s Arlie Smith told SFGN.”

Camerata del Re performs historic and modern music for Baroque instruments, featuring works by Jacques Ibert, Johann Christian Bach, David Foulis, Alfred Schnittke and Antonio Vivaldi. Believe it or not, violins and the wind instruments of the day have evolved over the centuries. If you’ve never heard a performance on period instruments, it’s a unique opportunity to experience the sound of the late 18th century, the way the composers heard their compositions. Film Festival Returns to Gateway, Celebrates Classics of Hollywood J.W. Arnold

jw@prdconline.com

Classic films are making a comeback at Fort Lauderdale’s Classic Gateway Theatre. The landmark theatre, which opened in 1951, will host the Second Annual Classic Film Festival beginning next week and running through September, featuring 16 of the most popular and critically acclaimed motion pictures of all time. Classic films are a passion for Arthur Friedman, operating partner of the Classic Gateway and a producer of Beyond the Sea, The Bobby Darin Story, starring Kevin Spacey, and The Price of Glory, starring Jimmy Smits.

Friedman grew up loving the movies and eventually went into the film industry, first as the owner of the legendary Harvard Square Theatre in Cambridge, Mass., and later as a producer. “Through the years, watching thousands of movies, I have learned that the movie theatre experience cannot be duplicated on television, video or any other new technology,” Friedman explained. There’s something about being in a theatre with an audience, watching a great movie, that is unique and spellbinding.”

Fort Lauderdale’s Classic Gateway Theatre hosts the Second Annual Classic Film Festival, beginning next week and running through September Photo courtesy of Classic Gateway Theatre

He added, “Having an emotional experience such as laughing or crying, being thrilled or even scared, or for that matter simply enjoying a moment together with family, friends, neighbors and the rest of the audience, creates memories that last forever.” Since purchasing the Fort Lauderdale movie theater over two years ago, he’s been committed to showcasing the vintage films that were popular in the Gateway’s heyday. He feels the industry has relied too much over the past 20 years on computergenerated special effects and big-ticket stars, rather than the core storytelling that made so many classic films great. The Gateway has long been popular with local audiences, screening art house, LGBT and indie films, and Friedman thought it would be the perfect venue for a Classic Film Festival last summer. Audiences responded, packing the theater and raising funds to benefit the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund. Instead of a thematic festival featuring musicals, comedy or a particular film genre, Friedman and his staff have again focused on 16 of his favorite classics, including three epic films by director David Lean, Bride on the River Kwai, Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia, and two beloved Frank Capra/Jimmy Stewart films, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It’s a Wonderful Life. Audiences can also catch Dustin Hoffman’s breakthrough film, The Graduate, as well as Tootsie, directed by Sidney Pollack. Rounding out the lineup are two memorable love stories, An Affair to Remember, starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, and The Way We Were, with

Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford; the comedies, Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein and Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, starring Peter Sellars; an iconic thriller, The Maltese Falcon; a vintage Woody Allen film, Manhattan; and Fred Astaire tripping the light fantastic with Cyd Charise in The Band Wagon. Last, but certainly not least, is On the Waterfront, directed by Elia Kazan and starring perhaps the greatest movie actor of all time, Marlon Brando. “It really is a throwback,” he said of the theater, which has undergone extensive restoration and was renamed the Classic Gateway, and the festival will again give audiences the rare opportunity to see the films in the setting they were intended.

The organization has also been the prime mover for domestic partnership benefits for public employees in Palm Beach County for more than two decades. At a special meeting on July 11, Town Council Members Richard Kleid and Michael Pucillo asked the Town Council to extend family health insurance coverage to employees with domestic partners. “It is small dollars in the grand scheme of things,” said Pucillo, noting that providing domestic partnership benefits would have a “positive effect on the town.” “It is the right thing to do, “ added Mayor Gail Coniglio, who serves as a nonvoting member on the Town Council. However, Council President Pro Tem Robert Wildrick requested additional time to clarify which employees would be eligible to enroll their domestic partners on the Town’s health insurance plan. With Wildrick’s concern having been met, last week the Town Council voted to implement the benefits. Town Council President David A. Rossow cast the sole vote against domestic partnership benefits.
