Gaga Fined For Breaking ’Homosexual Propaganda’ Law Russian officials have fined the organizers behind Lady Gaga’s 2012 Moscow concerts, claiming the shows and the singer’s support of LGBT rights “harmed children,” Gay Star
News reports.
A magistrate’s court in St. Petersburg ruled on Nov. 14 that Planet Plus must pay 20,000 rubies (about $614 U.S.) after Mother Monster performed in the city last year. In August, it was
reported that Russian officials
re-opened an investigation against Gaga shortly after she announced details about her third album “ARTPOP.” Russian politician Vitaly Milonov, the author of Russia’s “homosexual propaganda” measure, was responsible in looking into whether the pop star violated the law. “I can’t even really believe that you’re all here because
when they first called me they were like, ’We want you to go to Russia but we might have some problems because of all the gay propaganda in your show,’” Gaga said, according to Gay Star News. “Thank you, Moscow, for spreading the message of equality around the world. Thank you for spreading the message of Born This Way.” From our media partner

Alec Baldwin Apologizes for Anti-Gay Slur It’s been a rough week for Alec Baldwin. Not only did he give very emotional testimony against an accused stalker, but he also raised the ire of GLAAD after using an anti-gay slur he didn’t realize was one. According to TMZ, the “30 Rock” star chased after a photographer outside his
Manhattan apartment on Thursday and called the man a “c**ksucking f*g.” “Get away from my wife and the baby with the camera,” Baldwin can be heard yelling on video taken of the incident. “What f***ing language you want that in?” Recently Baldwin posted a

news highlight Mary Cheney Tells Sister Liz “You’re just wrong” on Gay Marriage Associated Press The parents of Liz Cheney and Mary Cheney are calling a timeout as their daughters engage in a testy public debate over gay marriage. Liz Cheney is running in a Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat from Wyoming. She told “Fox News Sunday” she disagrees with her sister Mary Cheney, who is married to a woman, over the topic of same-sex marriage. Mary Cheney responded on Facebook: “You’re just wrong.” Former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne Cheney, said in a statement Monday that their family has dealt with this issue privately for many years. They said they are “pained to see it become public.” Liz Cheney says she believes in a “traditional definition” of marriage and states should be allowed to decide the matter for themselves. News Briefs +Teen Calls on Apple to Change Definition of ‘Gay’ A Massachusetts teenager wants Apple officials to change the mega computer company’s definition of the word “gay” in its dictionary, the
Metrowest Daily News reports.
Becca Gorman, 15, from Sudbury, Mass., (about 22 miles west of Boston), started a campaign for Apple to change its definition of “gay” after she looked up the word in Apple’s dictionary while doing research for a school project.
According to Apple the third and informal definition of “gay” says “foolish; stupid,” with the example, “making students wait for the light is kind of a gay rule.” Gorman’s parents are lesbians and she says the phrase “that’s so gay” is used often around her, but she says she didn’t expect Apple to define “gay” in a similar way. After talking to her parents, Gorman sent a letter to Apple CEO Tim
Cook and asked him to remove the offensive definition. “I assume that you are a pro-gay company, and would never intend for any one of your products to be as offensive as this definition was,” the teen wrote in her letter to Cook. “Even with your addition of the word informal, this definition normalizes the terrible derogatory twist that many people put on the word ’gay.’”

Texas Middle School Gay Student Club Fights Bullying
Educators at a Fort Worth middle school have formed an alliance between gay and straight students in response to bullying on school campuses. The club is called Gay, Lesbian and Everybody Else, or GLEE. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram (http://bit.ly/HK1f1e) reports the group at Daggett Middle School on Fort Worth’s South Side is one of a handful of gay-straight organizations that have formed on Fort Worth school campuses. Daggett seventh-grade social studies teacher Lisa Earley is GLEE’s campus sponsor. She says students “wanted a place where they felt safe.” Fort Worth school district guidance and counseling director Kathryn Everest says about seven Gay-Straight Alliance groups have formed at district high schools. But Earley says middle school can be difficult for students as their sexualities emerge and they begin to question themselves. From The Associated Press

Purdue Senate Votes to Oppose Gay Marriage Ban
The Purdue University Senate has approved a resolution opposing Indiana’s proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. The senate’s members approved by a wide margin Monday a resolution that says the body “strongly urges” the General Assembly and Gov. Mike Pence to oppose adoption of the proposed constitutional amendment. If state lawmakers approve that measure it would go before Indiana voters on a referendum.

The plaintiffs contended that the new law, which prevents mental-health professionals from employing therapy intended to change the sexual orientation of a patient under age 18, violates their rights to free speech and freedom of religion. In her ruling, Wolfson noted that the law does not prevent professionals from opining about the appropriateness or efficacy of sexual-orientation change efforts, either in a public or private setting, rendering the freespeech claim “largely irrelevant.” From our media partner PGN-The

Pride Flag More Offensive Than Confederate Flag?
A recent poll by the Public Policy Polling group found that the gay Pride flag was more offensive to the average American than the Confederate flag, despite it being a symbol of slavery and racism. According to the study, 43 percent of people feel high school students should be allowed to wear confederate flags to school, while only 28 percent felt students should be able to sport the Pride flag. A whopping 57 percent of those polled felt that high schoolers shouldn’t be allowed to wear gay flags to school. When the question was posited as an either/ or scenario, only nine percent said that gay Pride flags were appropriate attire, compared to 38 percent approval for wearing the Confederate flag. A 52 percentile said they were unsure about whether either was appropriate. From our media partner EDGE

Russian Newspaper May Face Gay-Propaganda Case Associated Press

Russia’s media oversight agency aims to take a newspaper to court over an article about a homosexual teacher in what appears to be the first case prepared against a publication under the country’s law on gay propaganda. In September, a youth-oriented newspaper in Khabarovsk interviewed a teacher who had been fired over his sexual orientation. Quotes in the article prompted complaints to Roskomnadzor, the agency that supervises media conformance with law. A regional spokeswoman for the agency, Olga Shakhmatova, was quoted by the Interfax news agency on Wednesday as saying the article violated a law forbidding distribution to minors of material supporting non-traditional sexual relationships. She said documents would be sent to court soon, but Roskomnadzor officials said Friday they did not know if the case had been filed. The law calls for fines of up to 100,000 rubles ($3,300) for individuals and 1 million rubles ($33,000) for organizations along with a possible 90-day suspension. The law, passed this summer, has raised criticism abroad and caused concern about whether it would be applied to athletes and

spectators at the Winter Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi in February. Homosexuality is not illegal in Russia, but animosity toward gays is high. The new law does not define either the criteria for considering an action or statement to be propaganda or what sort of distribution to minors is prohibited. Critics say the lack of clarity gives wide leeway to those opposed to homosexuals and imposes a chilling effect on media coverage of gay issues. The newspaper, Molodoi Dalnevostochnik, quoted fired teacher Alexander Yermoshkin, as saying ``My existence itself is effectively evidence of homosexuality’s normalcy,’’ according to the Russian news website Gazeta.ru. In a hearing on whether the newspaper had violated the law, Roskomnadzor official Galina Egoshina denounced that quote. “Such a claim violates the laws of logic. By presenting it to readers who are minors, the author leads them into error about the normalcy of homosexuality. Following the logic of the author, you could recognize the existence of maniacs, serial killers, etc. as normal and even effective,” Gazesta quoted Egoshina as saying. From the Associated Press

Methodist Jury Convicts Pastor for Officiating Son’s Same-Sex Wedding CNN A Pennsylvania minister was found guilty in a church trial on Monday for officiating his son’s same-sex wedding, according to church officials. Frank Schaefer, 51, the pastor at Zion United Methodist Church of Iona in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, was found guilty by a jury of 13 ordained clergy members on two counts: officiating a same-sex wedding and being disobedient to the discipline and order of the church, according to Cathy HusidShamir, a Schaefer family spokesperson. Schaefer told CNN’s Zoraida Sambolin that his son, Tim, asked him to officiate his wedding seven years ago, and he decided to do it “out of love for him.” Despite at one point believing that homosexuality was incompatible with his Christian beliefs, Schaefer told CNN his views on the controversial topic began to change over time. “By the time our son came out I was ready to embrace him,” Schaefer told Sambolin on November 14.

Texas County Adopts Policy to Protect LGBT Inmates Associated Press The sheriff of Houston’s Harris County has adopted a sweeping policy designed to protect and guarantee equal treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender inmates, including allowing transgender individuals to be housed based on the gender they identify with instead of their biological sex. The new policy, which Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia’s office believes to be one of the most comprehensive in the country, states “discrimination or harassment of any kind based on sexual orientation or gender identity is strictly prohibited,” and outlines how such inmates will be searched, booked and housed, according to a copy of the policy obtained by The Associated Press ahead of an official announcement Thursday. The policy also covers intersex inmates, defined as people born with sex chromosomes or reproductive systems that are not considered standard. Other major jails, including L.A., Washington, D.C., and Denver, have taken similar steps to meet new federal standards for protecting inmates from sexual abuse and assault. Riviera Beach City Councilman verbally attacks resident at public meeting Fane Lozman was shocked when he was referred to as a “rapist, a political extortionist and a faggot cross-dressin’ piece of shit” by a member of the Riviera Beach city council during a public meeting last week. “It was just shocking. It was vile. It was disgusting,” Lozman said. “There was shock in the audience. I was upset about the whole thing.” According to Channel 12 News City Councilman Bruce Guyton reacted angrily, after Lozman questioned Guyton’s finances at the meeting. Lozman decided to contact SFGN after other people told him he should inform that LGBT community. “A lot of people reached out to me that they thought it was important the gay rights community know about the comments directed at me,” said Lozman, who is not gay. Guyton apparently apologized to Channel 12 saying “I was actually reading from an article, I’m not homophobic, that is not anything that I advocate. This man has been attacking me for months.” And he admitted to the television station that the language he used was “inappropriate.”
SouthFloridaGayNews
But for some that apology isn’t enough. “Riviera Beach councilmember Bruce Guyton must apologize to the citizens of Riviera Beach and to the LGBT community for his offensive statements. If he is unwilling to do so she should resign from public office,” said Rand Hoch, president of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council. “One would think public officials would be more sensitive in their comments these days. The Palm Beach County human rights Council is extremely disappointed that Mayor [Thomas] Masters would not comment on the derogatory statements made by councilmember Guyton.” This isn’t the first time though Lozman has been in the cross hairs of the city council. Over the years he’s been arrested at a public meeting, been shut up by council members, when they don’t like what he says, and even once dragged to ground by police officers while the city council laughed and giggled in the background – all of which has been caught on tape and can be viewed on YouTube (YouTube.com/ User/Scanshift). Lozman is a former marine and as a hobby says he fights “political corruption.”

Gay Vets Honor and Remember Times change for service members John McDonald
Openly gay veteran Scott Herman (blue shirt) celebrates Veteran’s Day with his husband on left. Photo courtesy of John McDonald
Father John Reid remembers a time when fear reigned in America’s military. Fear not for the enemy, but to be outed as a gay man. As a veteran of the Korean Conflict, Reid, now a priest at Divine Mercy Chapel in Wilton Manors, talked about what it was like to be a gay man in the military during the 1950s when homosexuality was strictly forbidden. “If you were caught, you were thrown out. Dishonorable discharge. End of story,” Reid said. Municipalities across South Florida celebrated their military heroes on Veteran’s Day, but it was in Wilton Manors where gay men and women talked openly of their service. “Let us not forget our LGBT veterans who had to fight just to serve their country,” said Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick. About 100 people attended the ceremony inside the community center at Hagen Park, where Reid, who served in the United States Army, gave the invocation and called for a “shutdown” of the war in Afghanistan. “Bring our men and women home, God,” he said. Reid and many others delivered readings describing America’s military campaigns in World War I, II, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf and the on-going War on Terror. Some of the readings painfully described the times and

situations. Skip Stadnik, 79, read a poem as tribute to those lost in combat. “We all had buddies,” said Stadnik, an Army veteran. “There was always that one guy you became closely attracted to. It was an I take care of you, you take care of me thing.” Presented by the Wilton Manors Leisure Services Department, the event also included a breakfast, flag ceremony by the Fort Lauderdale High School NJROTC and wreath presentation. “This is an extremely important day,” said Scott Herman, a disabled veteran of Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield in Iraq. “Today, we honor and remember those who sacrifice so much for this country.” As an openly gay man running for the Florida House of Representatives in District 93, Herman said he was pleased with U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s recent criticism of Florida as one of the last holdout states to comply with Pentagon regulations regarding same-sex spouses and health benefits. Herman recently married his spouse, Cale Choi, in Canada. Such an event was unheard of during Reid’s time in the Army. “It’s a different world now,” Reid said. “Service men and women do not live in fear.” Herman agreed, adding discrimination typically comes from those who never served in uniform.

For ‘Green Card Marriage’ Gays, Overturning of DOMA Bittersweet Christiana Lilly
To some, American citizenship is worth its weight in gold, and many are willing to enter into a fraudulent marriage to get it. It’s nothing new -- an American citizen agreeing to marry an immigrant so they can get a green card. However, for gay immigrants in fraudulent heterosexual marriages, the overturning of part of the Defense of Marriage Act was a light at the end of the tunnel as well as a new set of problems. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, up to 30 percent of marriages between citizens and immigrants are “green card marriages.” (www.CIS.org/MarriageFraud) Francisco Silva* was born and raised in Brazil, living a gay life under the radar, and in order to stay in the U.S married a woman – until she filed for divorce this year. His reasons for taking the risk of deportation – and five years imprisonment and $250,000 fine for her - was because he was free to live openly here with his partner. “I did it because I found myself in a position in life where I was happy,” he said. Although many think of Brazilian butt lifts and the racy Carnival street festival, for Silva, growing up in Brazil was tough as a gay person. He remembers watching a rock band he liked on television when his older brother told him he should never dress like that – with lots of jewelry – because that was “faggot stuff.” As a young adult, he lived in a nice home with multiple vehicles and staff, but dreamed of traveling to the U.S. and learning English. He visited Florida multiple times on a tourist visa until his then-boyfriend encouraged him to go for a full six months to work and take language classes. For one summer he worked the tourist season in Maine working for a friend’s company, who is also Brazilian. Loving the country so much, he made the decision to travel to Florida for the winter – overstaying his visa. There, he was introduced to the more open gay lifestyle by friends. “At first it was too much. To me, everything was new,” he remembers. “I felt like when I was here, I could be myself.” Silva went back and forth between the United States and Brazil, working the summer and spending the winter in Florida. He was planning to return to Brazil, but that’s when he met future partner Daniel*. Invited to a country and Hawaiian themed party, Silva walked into the party and saw a man in a black cowboy hat and was instantly attracted. “I put my eye on him and said [to my friends],’The party started and stopped right here,’” he laughed. “I was shaking.”
12
// 11.20.2013 // SFGN.com //
By the end of the night, the two men had exchanged numbers and started dating. Daniel, who Silva describes as a by-thebook kind of guy, was not happy that he was in the country illegally. Silva found jobs that would hire him and he made up a social security number – somehow it worked – and has been paying taxes every year. Since he hasn’t been able to get a driver’s license, he only drives when he absolutely has to, and is wary of police cars everywhere he goes. The same friend who got him the job in Maine had a sister who was a citizen and was willing to marry him to help him get a green card. The two married in 2007 and she returned to Brazil to take care of some family business, but decided she didn’t want to return. She promised she would come back for whatever interviews were necessary. “The government questions the married couple as to the bona fides of the marriage,” Paul D. Goldstein, an immigration lawyer, explained. “Did the couple enter into this relationship, into this marriage, to share a life together and not for the sole purpose of circumventing the immigration laws?” Getting caught also comes with a hefty price: the citizen faces a $250,000 fine
and up to five years imprisonment; the immigrant is deported. Silva and his legal wife failed the first interview -- the interviewer said it sounded like a friend helping another friend out. Two more times his application for citizenship was rejected. The two started getting into more and more disagreements until this year when she filed for divorce. However, Silva felt hopeful over the summer when a piece of the Defense of Marriage Act was overturned by the Supreme Court, allowing those in a same-sex marriages to reap federal benefits, including citizenship. But because Silva is gay and was previously married to a woman, red flags are bound to pop up. For Goldstein, and perhaps many other lawyers, this is a case they wouldn’t want to risk their career for because they would be representing someone who knowingly broke the law and would have to continue to lie to get remarried to someone of the same sex. They would have to prove it was a real heterosexual marriage, and perhaps the person came out of the closet or did not realize they were gay at the time. “It’s a situation where if somebody came to me with that type of case, I would have to really get involved in the makeup and relationships

past and present to determine what can be presented to show that this person did not commit fraud in the past,” he said. Goldstein once represented a Russian man who was able to come to the United States on asylum – homosexuality is illegal in that country. His sexuality came under question when he wanted to marry a woman. Goldstein won the case, proving that the man was bisexual and was entering into a real marriage. “The thing with somebody coming in to say, ‘This is what they did to get this status so that they could stay here to be with their gay lover,’ I don’t want to say I would have a problem with it but again… we have to really look at this because this case is going to be scrutinized to the bitter end,” he said. With his divorce finalized, Silva and his partner are going to look into finding a way for him to stay in the country the right way once and for all. Should he be deported, he’s not facing a life of misery in Brazil, but instead the reality of leaving behind a place where he’s found love, can be openly gay, and made friends. “I don’t have any expectations that it’s going to be easy,” he said. “What I want is to be able to live a normal life.” *Names have been changed

Ryan White (December 6, 1971 – April 8, 1990) was an American teenager from Kokomo, Indiana, who became a national poster child for HIV/AIDS in the United States, after being expelled from middle school because of his infection. As a hemophiliac, he became infected with HIV from a contaminated blood treatment. Doctors said he posed no risk to other students, but when White tried to return to school, many parents and teachers in Kokomo rallied against his attendance. A lengthy legal battle with the school system ensued, and media coverage of the case made White into a national celebrity and spokesman for AIDS research and public education. White lived five years longer than predicted but died in April 1990, one month before his high school graduation. Before White, AIDS was a disease widely associated with the male gay community. The U.S. Congress passed a major piece of AIDS legislation, the Ryan White Care Act, shortly after White’s death. The Act has been reauthorized twice; Ryan White Programs are the largest provider of services for people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States.

Smart Ride Breaks Record Annual bike ride crosses the million-dollar mark Jason Parsley
jason.parsley@sfgn.com
One Million Dollars. By any standard that’s helluva lot of money. And that’s just what the Smart Ride, an annual two day bicycle trek from Miami to Key West, raised this year to help local HIV-related charities. Unlike some charities where some of the money raised goes to administrative costs the Smart Ride organizers say “100 percent of pledges raised could go back to the communities to be used for direct services.” Some of the beneficiaries this year include the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, Pride Center at Equality Park, Pridelines Youth Services, AIDS Help, and the Comprehensive AIDS Program of Palm Beach County. “It gets better every year with everyone being so helpful and coming together as a community, people offering support even when they don’t know you,” said Rusty Obanion, who raised $1,800 this year and was a part of the Let’s Roll Bitches team. This is his fifth year participating in the ride. Another participant this year Kristofer Fegenbush, Chief Operating Officer of the Pride Center at Equality Park, rode with the Pride Center’s team. They raised $96,000. “What a week! I sweat, laughed, peddled, cheered and wept for days. My legs are tired, my voice is shot and my heart is full of love. I’ll never forget standing at the Key West pier, hand in hand with a team that represents the diverse communities we serve: gay and straight; men and women; HIV-positive and –negative; youth and senior; couples and singles; brown, white, black. I stand humbled, grateful and amazed by the generosity, dedication and passion of so many,” Fegenbush said. “We wouldn’t be able to provide our wide variety of vital, significant, strategic, impactful HIV programs as a Center without the SMART Ride. These dollars save lives. I want donors, riders, crew members and volunteers to know this. Already this year, the SMART Ride has helped The Center fund three major initiatives: 1. Our Healthcare Navigator who links people daily to life-saving medical care; 2.Our cutting-edge CouplesSpeak program that builds relationship skills, lowers risk and improves communication and; 3. Enhancements to our HIV Counseling and Testing program that will provide more than 5,000 HIV tests to community members in 2013.”

November 22, 1963
I remember where I was then. It was Algebra class, with Mr. O’Neill, in Lawrence High School. Classes ended at 2:45 pm, and the school buses were already lined up in a perimeter around the school to take us home. But the buzzer would not ring that day. Instead, the principal’s voice came over the P.A. system, broadcasting into every classroom at about 2:25 pm. The President of the United States had been assassinated, and we were all to proceed to our buses and homes at once. All afternoon activities at the school had been cancelled. End of day school bus rides were typically giddy journeys, planning softball games on Branch Boulevard. Not that day. I still remember the ride home even today, a stunned silence gripping the students of all classes. None of us fully understood the depth and dimension of what happened. We were transfixed only by a surreal sadness. Years later, we would learn from our teachers that the hurried rush home was in part due to the possible fear that the United States may have been under a Communist attack, and the president’s murder was a foreboding of a war that might be next. In 1963, news came in black and white via news bulletins, teletypes, Western Union, and Walter Cronkite- once a day, at 6:30 pm on CBS. There was no CNN or Fox. My home was on the south shore of Long Island, New York, in the small town of North Woodmere. Our family had one large 19inch television set in the den to share. If you wanted to change the dial, you went to the set, and carefully, ‘slowly’- dad would warn- move the rotary dial from station to station. No picture-in-picture, save, or record buttons existed. After all, Steve Jobs was only 8 years old. We would spend that entire weekend transfixed at those TV screens, images of the dead president’s funeral seared forever into our memories. It was my mom’s 42nd birthday, but there was no celebration in my home or any others in America. Sometimes now, 50 years later, I am surprised about how much I still remember about that weekend. Of course, each anniversary and decade drives home the memory again and again, from John-John’s salute to the lighting of the Eternal Flame. The bucking, rider-less horse is what I remember the most about the somber funeral procession. His name was Black

Jack, and he is one of only two horses in the United States to be buried with full military honors. Before that, World War II veterans remembered the infamy of December 7, 1941 and the attack on Pearl Harbor. I understand most of today’s Americans were born after JFK’s passing. Today, we all share the shock and tragedy of September 11, 2001, instead. JFK once said that the price of freedom “again and again is that each generation loses some of its best young men in defense thereof.” At 46 years old, on the afternoon of November 22, 1963, he became one of them. Thousands of young Americans would also die in Vietnam in that same decade. So too would the president’s brother, Robert Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King, both victims of an assassin’s deadly bullets.

For those of us in our 60’s, of the 60’s, it would be a turbulent decade of growth and change. We would later be marching in Washington and singing at Woodstock, asking for peace and love in a world that was giving us war and hate. Fifty years have passed, and new generations have dawned. The bullets of a false revenge have taken too many lives too many times over too many years, from civil rights workers in the 1960’s to John Lennon in 1980. The LGBT community has had its share of Harvey Milks. Violence has no virtues. In America, it just seems to have a repeat switch. Today’s students enter schools through metal detectors, all of us are screened at airports, and intelligence agencies secretly monitor your phone calls. It is not the world we intended. sneakers, and joke if we get home without a crazed teenager armed with an AK 47 going postal on us. In 2013, we hear of Columbine, Aurora, or Sandy Hook instead of JFK, RFK, and Dr. King. Somewhere else in America today, kids are also riding home on a school bus, shaken by recurring tragedies on their own campuses, which mar their past and will forever mark their tomorrows. Shocked by some stark new episode of transcending violence, they endure the same uncertain fears each of us felt riding home in school buses 50 years ago this week. May these young men and women emerge from the pain, so we can light the torch for a new generation: a flame for the equality and peace JFK sought to ignite a half century ago. It is a flame that will burn in my generation’s hearts forever.
opinion letter to the editor
Some Readers Upset With ‘Prison Diaries’ Dear Editor, I am writing you concerning your decision to give a convicted child pornographer a voice and column in SFGN. I am a Gay man and Father that works with a group called DADsquared. We are a community of men working endlessly towards the day that all Gay men, with the calling to be Fathers, can see their dreams realized. Your giving Mr. Reina this platform is truly deplorable on so many levels. I hear from good, upstanding, law biding men on a daily basis that are turned away from Fatherhood by groups and organizations that still believe that many Gay men are pedophile’s, you sir have just given them more of the perceived “proof they need.” Mr. Reina says that he has accepted responsibility for what he has done and yet in his own words states in your paper, “I have never inflicted harm on any child or minor in my life, nor would I ever do so.” That statement in itself is proof that he does not fully understand his role in his
own actions. Distributing pornography containing boys as young as six having sex with older men and some appearing to be struggling is INDEED inflicting harm on a child, in the most heinous of ways. That distribution only fueled another pedophiles desires, which led to another boy, somewhere, being victimized, and Mr. Reina had a hand in that. Mr. Reina also states that these actions were brought about due to his drug addiction which is also another deflection of personal responsibility, there are (sadly) thousands of Gay men suffering addiction and I can safety say that turning towards sexual child abuse is not the norm. I also find it unbelievable that the paper states that in lieu of compensation for writing the column, as if he deserves to profit from his actions, Mr. Reina will be “paying it forward” by donating to his favorite PET charity... really... how about donating to an organization that advocates for the victims of child abuse? SFGN is a leading publication working for the LGBT community; I can not understand
why you made this extremely sad and dangerous decision. You should be leading the community towards equality and helping us to transcend stereotypes, instead, these types of actions keep us bound to the past and to old societal negative beliefs. I hope you reconsider this decision and remove his column from your publication. Henry Amador DADsquared is a global community designed by and for Gay Fathers. Our mission is to provide resources, guidance and direction to Gay Dads raising children and to those still searching for the possibility. Festival Flea Market Mall is a Fantasy of Fun Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
Antique car show December, 15th
Welcome to Sound Bite Q, the column that thanks advertisers who support SFGN. We invite you to support them, because without their outreach to us, we would not be here to reach out to you. More importantly, local papers only survive in our busy world because we are all connected to each other. For me, this column does more than encourage you to patronize one of SFGN’s advertisers. It lets you know a little more about our friends and enables you to feel a little more comfortable using their services with the limited dollars you have. The Festival Flea Market Mall, America’s largest indoor flea market has been a world class shopping destination for over 22 years. But more importantly, it was the place my mom loved to go to most. And I would love to go with her. It wasn’t just for the deals, though great deals are to be had everywhere by everyone. I think what we enjoyed most was the shared experience of one stop shopping. I would find a pair of sneakers at a great price and she would score a bottle of perfume.
Hey, I learned my lesson. When we opened the SFGN offices in January of 2010, I went to the Festival Flea Market Mall for our rugs, signs, and office supplies. You don’t let the name “flea market fool you. Whether you’re looking to perk up your pad, land a gorgeous watch, or sport the latest shades, there is something here for you. The LGBT community pridesw itself on style. The Festival Mall is a place where you can spoil yourself with an endless array of head to toe grooming products. Once you enter the doors of this air conditioned shopper’s paradise, you’ll see why people from all over the world flock to Festival to experience the buzz. With over 500 stores featuring unique gifts, brand names, fabulous prices, it’s a day of fun. The Festival Flea Market Mall is so big that they have an antique mall within the mall where you’ll find even more treasures to ponder. At over 30,000 square feet containing hundreds of booths, this collector’s dream attraction adds another
dimension to the eclectic mix of merchants that make this place a must-see. It is also a place where there is everything in the world to eat, from the ‘stickles’ at the renowned and revered New York Pickle Stand to an international food court in the heart of the mall. Ah, yes. I love food. There are a variety of energy-shopping delicacies available for light snacking or serious dining, including Cuban selections, Chinese fare, seductive cheese steaks, custom-made salads, Kosher hot dogs, sumptuous paninis, overstuffed deli sandwiches, and French crepes. The culinary world is at your feet on Sample Road. There’s always something happening at Festival. For me, you can bet I will be there again on Sunday, December 15, for their annual antique car show. It’s classic in every way, with over 600 antique and foreign cars lining the Festival parking lot. It is a camera-flashing, sight-seeing experience for tourists and locals. I never miss it. And the day before, the Wheel of Fortune Mobile is holding auditions.
The truth is that Festival Flea Market Mall is a place where you’ll shop ‘til you drop‌and love every minute of it, haggling bargains, finding surprises, and enjoying the low prices at the end of the day, when you will still find money left in your pocket, but not a lot of room left in the stuffed trunk of your car.

Queering the Holidays The week of November 18 should be an LGBT holiday, as I see it, at least in the United States and United Kingdom. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court issued its ruling in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health on November 18, 2003, the first time a court had permitted same-sex couples to marry in the United States. Across the pond, the United Kingdom on November 18, 2003 implemented the repeal of Section 28, which since 1986 had prevented local authorities from “promoting homosexuality,” including “the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.” Such a conjunction of events seems to call for celebration. Maybe it’s my Jewish heritage, where we like our eight-day holidays, but I’d argue for a multi-day observance. Call it “LGBT Domestic Bliss Week,” in which we celebrate our marriages or other unions and our very real family relationships. In all fairness, I have to admit a certain bias towards this week because it has personal resonance for me as well. My spouse and I wed in Massachusetts on November 18, 2006, and then spent the next few days on our honeymoon. Much as I’d like to pretend this was planned, the timing was purely coincidental, driven by our move to the state and the need to have me on her health insurance. I’m also not in any way implying that our wedding itself should be the motivation for an international holiday—in fact, we more often celebrate the non-legal anniversary of our commitment in April. Still, it would be fun to remember our “Massaversary” as we also observe a holiday. Here’s one possible way we could make the week into an ongoing festival: On the Monday of the week containing November 18, we could celebrate by sending our kids to school. Yup. Real family relationships right in the schools. Those without kids could enjoy their childfree time by sleeping in, working late, or going out to dinner with a significant other or a friend. On Tuesday, we could do our laundry. Personally, that’s a big part of my “homosexual lifestyle” right there. It could also be a day for giving thanks that we still get along with our spouses or partners even if we each fold shirts differently or hang the toilet paper in a different direction. Domestic bliss is built on accommodating such differences.

Wednesday is a day for family reading, preferably books that are LGBT inclusive or in some other way reflect one of our many identities—or another identity about which we want to know more. Thursday is back to the chores with a symbolic Cleaning of the Closets. On Friday, we pick up on Thursday’s activity, and drop off used clothing at a local charity or coat drive – to show that LGBT people give back to our communities at large, too. Saturday is family movie night. Preface it with a family baking hour when you make chocolate chip cookies or brownies to eat with the film. Bonus holiday goodwill if you fall asleep snoring next to your beloved or kids. Sunday is a day for community, for appreciating those around us, LGBT and allies, who make our domestic bliss a little more blissful. Invite friends over for brunch or a brisk fall walk. I’m not suggesting everyone follow these exact ideas. Part of the spirit of the week could be that each family gets to decide for itself what “domestic bliss” means and how to celebrate it. Those who are single and child-free could celebrate with friends or honor their solitude. I don’t know if this week will ever become an actual holiday—I write partly tongue in cheek because the sheer ordinariness of domestic life contrasts sharply with the extraordinariness of the steps we’ve had to take to secure our right to be domestic. The point is, too, that it is important for us as LGBT people to enter the broader holiday season with a sense of flexibility, adaptation, and a willingness to incorporate our own experiences as LGBT people. Holiday times can be stressful, as we deal with travel, family gatherings, extra food preparation, and gift buying. For LGBT families, it can also mean time spent with relatives who aren’t always accepting of us and our children—or at the very least, being awash in holiday imagery that doesn’t include families like ours. We therefore shouldn’t be afraid to make up our own family traditions and observances, or to give old ones new twists. Many Jewish people this year, for example, are observing the once-in-alifetime conjunction of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah with a plethora of new food combinations (for example, turkey stuffed

with cubes of challah, a traditional Jewish celebration bread). We LGBT families, of whatever religious and cultural background, should similarly blend our LGBT heritage with our other identities to create a holiday season that is meaningful for us. Not all of us LGBT folks take the domestic path, of course, and that is fine if it is a personal choice. Even for those of us who

do, however, it is important not to lose sight of the spirit that started us on the road to equality. However we may celebrate this week and the coming holiday season, may we bring to it a spirit of inventiveness, individuality, persistence, and all that makes us “queer.” Dana Rudolph is the founder and publisher of Mombian (mombian.com), an award-winning blog and resource directory for LGBT parents.

The Marriage-Equality Elephant in The Room At the dinner party for the wedding of friends who became the first same-sex couple in their New Jersey county to legally wed last week, the discussion turned to how they would refer to one another now that they’re married. Would it be “partner,” “spouse” or “husband?” At this early stage of marriage equality, there is no consensus on titles, but I’ve noticed that younger couples seem to have an easier time using the term “husband” for one other, or in the case with women, “wife.” Those of us who are a little older, it seems, prefer “partner.” Understanding this difference requires an understanding of the history of the gay-rights struggle back to 1969. That was the year that marriage equality became a real issue. The Rev. Troy Perry of Metropolitan Community Church started to perform commitment ceremonies and, within a few years, parishioners from his churches around the nation began to push
the government by applying for marriage certificates. But, the majority of the gayrights movement at the time was very antireligious and felt that it was religion that had oppressed LGBT people for hundreds of years. They argued that marriage was a religious institution and, therefore, we should not try to become “heterosexual.” This made most of the activists in the movement act somewhat condescending to Perry and MCC. I can personally attest to this since I was a member of a group of gay men and women who picketed Troy and his organizing meetings. That’s actually how we met and became friends. But aside from the religious aspect, there’s another issue that LGBT pioneers are facing when they hear those titles. Many, like myself, recall the days not so long ago — and which even still happens in some places today when a naive person has never personally met an LGBT person
— when an LGBT couple would be asked, “Which one of you plays the man and which is the wife?” To many of us who have attempted to deal with that question over the years, it was disheartening. In answering, you tried not to insult the person asking the question by explaining that there was more to a relationship than simply sex and role-playing. Our relationships are about building an entire life together. For same-sex couples, deciding how to refer to one another is a personal decision and there is no correct title. But maybe those who use the term “husband” and “wife” are doing us all a favor since, in seeing two husbands or two wives, that naive person won’t be able to ask which is the husband and which is the wife. Mark Segal, PGN publisher, is the nation’s mostaward-winning commentator in LGBT media. He can be reached at mark@epgn.com.

Florida Democrats and LGBT Rights As regular readers know, this reporter is an active member of the Democratic Party. Though I have been critical of Democratic politicians in the past (and will continue to do so) under our country’s two party system we progressives have no choice but to belong to the party of the New Deal and the Great Society. This is true in the case of the progressive cause that is closest to my heart, the movement for LGBT rights and equality. While I respect and appreciate the work that my Log Cabin Republican friends are doing to make their party more LGBT-friendly, the fact remains that the GOP is currently controlled by social conservatives and tea party activists who oppose LGBT rights, South Florida Representative Ileana RosLehtinen to the contrary. In the state of Florida, there are several groups that work on behalf of LGBT people within the Democratic Party. On a state level, we have the Florida GLBT Democratic
Caucus (http://floridaglbtdemocrats.org), led by Michael Rajner and other LGBT and/ or AIDS activists. According to its mission statement, “the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus represents the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community to the Florida Democratic Party. It is Aa voice that seeks to instill awareness of the freedoms of a democratic society, educate future leaders, support the community at large, and maintain an ongoing rapport and increasing visibility with political entities.” There are also Democratic clubs on the local level. Here in Broward County, which has Florida’s largest number of Democrats, the Dolphin Democrats (http:// www.dolphindems.org) represents our interests. The mission of the Dolphin Club is “to foster good will between gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) members of the Democratic Party and the community at large.” (Full disclosure: I am a Board

member of the Dolphin Dems.) We who live in Broward are fortunate to live in a County that welcomes us and respects our rights. And we are lucky to have an active Democratic Party that helps us achieve and maintain those rights. Unfortunately, this good fortune does not extend to the state level. While many parts of the Sunshine State, like Broward County, are LGBT friendly, our state government is very conservative and LGBT un-friendly. For over a decade all three branches of the State government have been controlled by conservative Republicans who are extreme – even by Republican standards. Though most of the GOP’s success can be attributed to our state’s innate conservatism, the fact remains that Republicans are better political players than Democrats are to our Party’s regret. For years political pundits have criticized Florida’s Democratic Party for not getting our act together. They quote the late Will Rogers, who famously said that “I belong to no organized party. I’m a Democrat.” Critics like Michael Putney and Buddy Nevins argue that we don’t unite like Republicans, don’t have a common theme like Republicans, and can’t raise money like Republicans. (In short, we are not Republicans.) Even worse, our critics say, we Dems do not have a farm team: a set of ambitious young politicians who start at the bottom and move up the ranks the way the GOP’s Marco Rubio did. If the best we can do is recycle a Republican like Charlie Crist, we are in big trouble. Much of the Florida GOP’s success can be attributed to gerrymandering which, in spite of the passage of the Fair Districts Amendment in 2010, continues to flourish. And Republicans outvote Democrats,
SouthFloridaGayNews
especially in non-presidential elections. So the first thing we need to do is energize our base, especially youth and minorities, who only vote when Barack Obama is on the ballot. Fortunately, the recent government shutdown has created a backlash against the GOP and the tea party that controls it. (Though the disastrous debut of the Affordable Care Act Web site might lead public opinion in the other direction.) Another hopeful sign is Democrat Amanda Murphy’s victory in a special election for the State Legislature (District 36). Though Murphy (who won with LGBT support) only received 300 more votes than her opponent and poses no challenge to the GOP’s vast majority in Tallahassee, her victory is a step in the right direction. What Florida Democrats need to do besides bringing out the vote and raising LOTS of money is to encourage young Democrats to run for office. (Charlie Crist and Bill Nelson are not going to be around forever, and Bob Graham is retired.) Here again, there is hope in the horizon. Here in Broward County we have two young, gay Democrats, both active members of our Dolphin Club, who are running for the State Legislature and who I believe will help shape the future of our Party. They are Scott Herman (a former Republican!) who is running for District 93 and John Paul Alvarez (District 100). If they are elected, they will join Democratic State Representatives David Richardson (District 113) and Joe Saunders (District 49) to form a small but vocal gay caucus. Along with Dolphin Christopher Warnig, who is running for the Broward County Commission, they will be part of a Florida Democratic Revival.

Sharing Your “Bounty” Can Be Rewarding Thanksgiving is almost here. If you have the financial resources to provide a comfortable life for your family, you have reason to be thankful. And if you can afford to share some of your “bounty” with charitable organizations, you may want to be as generous as possible — because your gifts may allow you to both give and receive. By donating cash or other financial assets, such as stocks, to a qualified charity (either a religious group or a group that has received 501(c)(3) status from the IRS), you help benefit an organization whose work you believe in — and, at the same time, you can receive valuable tax benefits. To illustrate: If you give $100 to a qualified charity, and you’re in the 25% tax bracket, you can deduct $100, with a tax benefit of $25, when you file your 2013 taxes. Therefore, the real “cost” of your donation is just $75 ($100 minus the $25 tax savings). Furthermore, if you donate certain types of non-cash assets, you may be able to receive additional tax benefits. Suppose you give $1,000 worth of stock to a charitable group. If you’re in the 25% bracket, you’ll
be able to deduct $250 when you file your taxes. And by donating the stock, you can avoid paying the capital gains taxes that would be due if you had eventually sold the stock yourself. To claim a charitable deduction, you have to be able to itemize deductions on your taxes. Charitable gifting can get more complex if you choose to integrate your charitable giving with your estate plans to help you reduce your taxable estate. The estate tax is consistently debated in Congress, and the exemption level has fluctuated in recent years, so it’s not easy to predict if you could eventually subject your heirs to these taxes. Nonetheless, you can still work with your tax and legal advisors now to take steps to reduce any possible estate tax burden in the years ahead. One such step might involve establishing a charitable remainder trust. Under this arrangement, you’d place some assets, such as appreciated stocks or real estate, in a trust, which could then use these assets to pay you a lifetime income stream. When you establish the trust, you may be able
to receive a tax deduction based on the charitable group’s “remainder interest” — the amount the charity is likely to ultimately receive. (This figure is determined by an IRS formula.) Upon your death, the trust would relinquish the remaining assets to the charitable organization you’ve named. Keep in mind, though, that this type of trust can be complex. To establish one, you’ll need to work with your tax and legal advisors. Of course, you can also choose to provide your loved ones with monetary gifts while you’re still alive. You can give up to $14,000 per year, per individual, to as many people as you choose without incurring the gift tax. For example, if you have three children, you could give them a cumulative $42,000 in a single year — and so could your spouse. Thanksgiving is a fine time to show your generosity. And, as we’ve seen, being generous can be rewarding — for your recipients and yourself. Here’s what community leaders had to say about that: “Most LGBT Americans are not protected from workplace discrimination. Speaker Boehner’s ignorance of this fact demonstrates just how low a priority equal rights for LGBT workers is for him. Now that he has been told that we can be fired from our jobs just because we are LGBT, perhaps he will drop his opposition to ENDA and set the bill for a vote in the House” – Rand Hoch, President of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council. “Boehner ‘s statement is grossly and entirely inaccurate. It is a poor and deceptive attempt to support discriminatory practices by pretending that they and those who suffer them don’t SouthFloridaGayNews
exist. Ironically it is the very ignorance and prejudice embedded in Boehner’s words that validate the need for these important protections.” – George Castrataro, Broward county employment lawyer “Speaker Boehner’s comments demonstrate he is both completely out of touch and more than willing to disregard for the facts. Under federal law LGBT people can be fired from our jobs just because of who we are. The public overwhelmingly supports this law and Speaker Boehner is either going to catch up or lose an entire generation of voters who understand LGBT equality is a defining issue in our country today.” – Stratton Pollitzer, Deputy Director of Equality Florida

Joel Derfner didn’t initially think of his partner, Mike, as marriage material. Marriage wasn’t even up for consideration when they started dating. It wasn’t dating, really, it was more like hanging out, usually in bed. Those first years were rocky, with splits and reconciliations aplenty, until they got engaged in 2007. And their seemingly everpresent relationship problems intensified. Illness in Mike’s family forced them to become caretakers, resulting in lack of privacy in their Brooklyn home. Derfner had grassis-greener thoughts on his mind. Mike became stressed, Derfner was rattled, and there were things he just couldn’t get over. One of them was the loss of couplehood that he and Mike once shared. They almost split yet again. LGBT Highlight on Sunday at Miami’s Book Fair Jesse Monteagduo
Each November, South Florida book lovers, along with book authors, publishers and publicists, gather at Miami-Dade College Wolfson Campus for the annual Miami Book Fair International, our country’s largest literary gathering. This year’s Fair, going on until Sunday, is also the Fair’s 30th Anniversary. Each year the event has one or more events geared towards LGBT readers, and this year is no exception. This year the Fair saves its queer best for last, scheduling the main LGBT panel on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 5 p.m. Titled “GLBTQ: Politics/Marriage/Religion,” the panel features authors Jennifer Baumgardner, Michael Bronski and Jeff Chu. They will each be promoting their respective books: We Do!: American Leaders Who Believe in Marriage Equality (edited by Baumgardner and former Vermont Governor Madeleine M. Kunin); “You Can Tell Just By Looking” And 20 Other Myths about LGBT Life and People
(by Bronski, Ann Pellegrini and Michael Amico); and Does Jesus Really Love Me? A Gay Christian’s Pilgrimage in Search of God in America (by Chu). “I think this is a great mix because You Can Tell deals a lot with religion as well as marriage and other legal issues,” Bronski says. “We will also be signing books.” In addition to promoting (and signing) their books, the trio will take part in a panel on challenges facing the LGBT community. Another LGBT highlight of the 30th Anniversary Miami Book Fair is “Queer Poetry/Queer Differences,” a poetry reading on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. Presented in partnership with Reading Queer, this panel explores and celebrates our differences with LGBT poets who write and speak from varied perspectives: Eduardo C. Corral, Neil de la Flor, Parker Phillips, Maureen Seaton, and L. Lamar Wilson. South Florida homeboy and inaugural poet Richard Blanco will promote his latest book, For All of Us, One Today: An

Drive This, Not That, October 2013 2014 Kia Soul vs. 2013 Nissan Juke NISMO
Winner: 2014 Kia Soul
We gays are a colorful lot, so why it is that so many of us drive the same dull cars is a mystery to me. Especially when there are such vibrant yet affordable automobiles out there as the funky 2014 Nissan Juke and allnew Kia Soul, who are duking it out in this month’s episode of Drive This, Not That. Between the two, the Nissan is the most
fun to look at, with its genre-defying proportions, wonky headlights and cartoonish fenders. It’s also the most fun to drive, by a lot if you get the hopped up NISMO model, with its 197 turbocharged horsepower, racing seats and tracktuned suspension. But even outstanding performance can’t mask the plasticky cheapness of the Juke’s interior, and going

fast is little compensation to rear seat passengers, whose heads regularly have unscheduled meetings with the low roof. The redesigned Kia Soul breaks less ground from a design standpoint, but that’s okay, as it retains the charmingly wedgy looks of the original, and some of its new colors (like “Moss,” “Dune,” and “Alien”) are truly epic. The Soul is nowhere near as powerful, but it has an infinitely more refined cabin, hightech optional infotainment features, and quiet powertrain. Also, while the Juke’s little bubble-butt is cute enough to cup with your hand (go ahead, it can’t slap you), there’s not much you can do with it once you pop the

I Think It’s In My Head: Curated by the TM Sisters Andrea Richard
British artist Tracey Emin, neon sculpture Photo courtesy of Girls’ Club
Fort Lauderdale Girls’ Club, a contemporary art gallery space and the sole private collection in the world dedicated to exhibiting contemporary women artists has a new show opening Sunday, Nov. 10. I think it’s in my head, curated by renowned artist duo, the TM Sisters, also known as Monica and Natasha Lopez de Victoria, have examined and culled nearly 50 pieces of art from the club’s massive private collection. “The Tracey Emin piece is where we got the title ‘I think it’s in my head’ from which we felt sets the mood for the other works,” said Natasha Lopez de Victoria of the British artist’s neon sculpture of pink and blue lettering. The TM Sisters mounted it above the rest of the pieces, beckoning viewers to scan the walls from ceiling to floor. The multimedia show delves into the human mind and concerns mysterious subjects at play. According to the TM Sisters, they selected each piece based on a powerful attraction that spoke to them while sorting through the collection. “The pieces that spoke to us in unison,” Natasha explained, “are more align with the show’s themes and ideas.” Selected pieces include paintings, drawings, prints, video and sculptures, reflecting mystical elements of subtle and not-so subtle displays of metaphysical aspects, subjects undergoing metamorphosis, endearing supernatural mysteries, and telepathic communication. “The overall idea is about the unknown and the artists’ works surrounding the unknown whether it’s an external or internal unknown,” Monica said. “Spiritual truths and physical truths are what some of the artists have weaved together. We’re very in tuned to that, and as we hung up the show we were developing a story.” The artist sisters, of Miami, have described their own work as “electro tropical,” and have gained international notoriety for their own

contemporary art works. They been featured in the New York Times, and major art press such as Art in America, and have graced the cover of ARTNews. While they are not showing their own work in this show, they have treated the gallery’s wall with their trademark of shard lines, by painting the walls five shades of purple. Their stylistic approach to the walls creates an optical illusion in which viewers might perceive the mounted canvases as being on a slant. The color scheme from dark to light offers a joyous interplay that not only sets the mood for the show but also can trick viewers, as the colors appear to blend. Experiencing it in person is magical. The exhibition includes South Florida artists Harumi Abe, Jen Stark, and Samantha Salzinger. International and national artists include but not limited to are Ana Mendieta, Beverly Semmes, Catherine Opie, and Claire Evans. Claire Evans, vocalist of electro-indie outfit YACHT, who just played III Points Festival in Miami last month, is contributing an interactive piece and is also writing the text for the show’s catalogue. Throughout the yearlong show, it closes on Sept. 26, 2014, live performance art will be featured offering a gamut of cultural experiences. Up first is Theatrical Exquisite Corpse: A Night of Experiential Theatre on Friday, November 22, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. This collaboration with writer-in-residence Vanessa Garcia features a night of theatre concerning the surrealist tradition of the exquisite corpse. Museum Offers Experience Clothed in Theater History J.W. Arnold
As visitors walk through the new Wick Costume Museum in Boca Raton, the unforgettable melodies of iconic Broadway musicals waft through the air. A carousel features the ornate beaded gowns created by Cecil Beaton for the original production of My Fair Lady starring Julie Andrews. Around the corner are shelves lined with brilliant red and gold band uniforms from The Music Man. There’s also Yul Brenner’s Siamese robes from The King & I, Richard Burton’s armor forged for a production of Camelot and the flamboyant bedazzled costumes from more recent productions of La Cage aux Folles and The Producers.
The irreplaceable collection, valued at more than $21 million, was assembled by Marilynn Wick, the founder of Costume World, the country’s largest theatrical costume shop, and occupies 55,000 square feet in the back of the new Wick Theatre. Wick opened the theater, formerly the Caldwell in Boca Raton, this fall after a whirlwind renovation and moved the costume museum from a nondescript Pompano Beach warehouse just this month. “At this point, I haven’t had one chance to breathe. We’ve been working at this day and night and it’s so beautiful,” she said. “Sometimes it doesn’t seem like it can be real. People are enjoying it so much and I now feel that my vision has come to life.” Wick had been searching for an appropriate location to showcase the collection and always felt a working theater would be the best venue. When the Caldwell was shuttered two years ago amid financial difficulties, she knew that would be the place to display the costumes from 48 Broadway shows. After investing millions of dollars to refurbish the theater’s sound and light systems, update the lobby and catering facilities and create the costume museum from the old set shops, the theater and costume museum opened to rave reviews. The first production, The Sound of Music, was critically acclaimed and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas just opened, ushering in the holiday season to South Florida audiences. The Wick quickly earned a reputation for glitzy productions of big Broadway shows that most local companies eschew. Already, more than 100 groups have booked docentled tours of the museum, which can also include lunch in a private dining room Historic costumes from iconic Broadway productions, including My Fair modeled after Central Park’s Lady starring Julie Andrews (1956), are now on display at The Wick famed Tavern on the Green Costume Museum in Boca Raton.
restaurant, followed by a private cabaret performance or a matinee of The Wick’s current show. Marilynn’s daughter, Kimberly, serves as the curator of the museum. “We strived to make it an interactive tour while paying homage to the set designers and costume designers,” Kimberly explained. “It’s almost like an adult Disneyworld,” with carefully planned staging, lighting and audio effects. It’s not unusual to see patrons tear up, she said, as they don white gloves to peruse the thousands of intricately crafted costumes and try on some of the ornate hats. As a special treat, the visitors get a sneak peak at rehearsals. “They can hear the sounds of the show tapping away,” she added. “We open the stage doors. Many of our guests have never ever been backstage in a theater.” The theater and museum are the
culmination of decades of hard work for Wick and her daughters, who started the Costume World business around the dining room table by sewing a handful of Santa suits that would be rented out to raise extra money for the girls. “My daughter and I have had a wonderful experience working together. We’ve learned a lot about each other through it all and it’s been personally rewarding to see her grow in this manner,” the beaming mother said of Kimberly. Tours of the Wick Costume Museum, 7901 Federal Hwy. in Boca Raton, last 40 minutes and are offered seven days a week, beginning at 11 a.m. Tours, including lunch, cost $48 per person or $58 with a private cabaret show. Packages including a matinee performance start at $88 per person. Tours must be reserved in advance by calling 561-995-2333. For more information, go to TheWick.org.

Florida Grand Opera Takes Risk, Reaps Rewards J.W. Arnold The future of opera was hotly disputed long before the New York City Opera (dubbed “The People’s Opera” by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia) declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy this fall after a heralded 70-year history that culminated in a performance of a new work based on the life of model Anna Nicole Smith. In recent years, faced with aging audiences and shrinking donations, companies have relied on the tried and true favorites of the repertoire: La bohéme, Carmen, The Marriage of Figaro, La traviata and the like. So, it was a daring move for Florida Grand Opera, under the leadership of General Director Susan T. Danis in her second season, to kick off the 2013-14 season with Mourning Becomes Electra, a 1967 work by Fort Lauderdale resident Marvin David Levy that premiered to critical acclaim at the Met. An update of the Greek myth of Orestes and based on the play by Eugene O’Neill, Levy’s opera vanished from the stage, to be revived 30 years later by the Lyric Opera
of Chicago and reimagined in 2003 and 2004 by Seattle and the City Opera before this triumphant staging in its composer’s hometown. Mourning is a tempestuous tale of adultery, love, betrayal, murder and even incest among a troubled aristocratic family, The Mannons of post-Civil War New England. By the time the curtain falls on Act 1, an adulterous affair between Christine and her husband’s illegitimate nephew is revealed and the only way their love can be freely expressed is through the murder of her husband, an aging war hero. By Act 2, son Orin stabs Brant, the bastard lover, and Christine commits suicide to rest with her true love. In complicated twists equaled only on the prime time soap operas of the 1980s, Orin attempts to molest his sister Lavinia before killing himself and leaving her alone in their cursed manor house. With such a convoluted plot, Levy is hobbled by Henry Butler’s burly libretto. Ramon Tebar conducts during the dress rehearsal of Florida Grand Opera’s Mourning Becomes Electra, a contemporary work by local composer Marvin David Levy receiving its regional premiere Photo courtesy of Justin Namon
Levy’s music is reminiscent of Barber and Bernstein, punctuated by percussive, colorful—yes, masterful—orchestrations but lost in an endless series of throughcomposed dialogue necessary to propel the story along. There are no melodious arias, there simply no time, and hardly a melody, yet his harmonies are lush and engaging. Conductor Ramon Tebar leads the orchestra through the challenging, multi-meter score, unfortunately occasionally overshadowing even the most powerful vocal moments from the cast. The vocal parts demand virtuosity and the cast steps up to the challenge: Lauren Flanigan, who has starred as Christine in all three recent productions, demonstrates gymnastic agility throughout, making the most difficult passages sound easy. Rayanne Dupuis (Lavinia) also excels, as do Nelson Martinez (Jed) and Morgan Smith (Adam Brant) in their FGO debuts. Levy’s contemporary score is accentuated by a minimalistic set design by Anya Klepikov that features an 8-foot-tall dollhouse modeled after the manse that serves as a symbolic setting for the characters’ movements throughout and is flanked by two large screens that alternately project the scenery around the manor and the stern family portraits that hang throughout the home.

Mourning offers plenty of challenges for the creative team and performers, but it is also a reach for audiences expecting lilting melodies and happy endings. To the credit of the Arsht Center audience, discussion was thoughtful during intermission and few succumbed to the opportunity for retreat, resulting in an undisputed victory for FGO and contemporary opera. As a reward for the brave, FGO continues its season with more of the favorites of the repertoire: Verdi’s Nabucco (Jan. 25-Feb. 8), Puccini’s Tosca (March 29 – April 12) and Massenet’s Thaïs (May 3 – 17).

community announcement Donations to Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida Tripled With Donor Match New donors who give to any of the 18 arts and cultural projects posted at Power2Give. org/Broward will see that donation triple thanks to a $100,000 matching grant from the Community Foundation of Broward to support artistic projects by non-profit organizations in Broward County. Facilitated by Business for the Arts Broward, the initiative is designed to attract and encourage new donors. Through December 15, any donations made by new donors to the projects will be matched 2:1 up to $10,000 by the Community Foundation of Broward. That means a $25 donation will result in $75 for the project. “We are incredibly pleased with the caliber of projects that have been posted for this initiative. New donors certainly have a diverse collection of projects to choose from,” said Jarett S. Levan, chair of Business for the Arts Broward. “We encourage all new donors to log on today to fund these projects which will have such a significant impact on our community.” One of the projects that included in this donor match is the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. Funding is needed to enhance performances of this group of nearly 150 volunteer members ages 25 to 85 with the purchase of new wireless microphones and making some costly soundboard repairs. The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida is building bridges between people from all walks of life by inspiring audiences, moving spirits, opening minds and changing hearts through the quality of their music, the power of their words and the sight of their joy.
