Ellen DeGeneres’ goal of setting a retweet record with her star-studded selfie was achieved before the Oscars telecast was even over. During a comic bit, the Oscars host prevailed upon actor Bradley Cooper to take a picture with her and several other stars crowding around, including Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Compiled by John McDonald

Long before midnight Sunday, the photo had been retweeted more than 2 million times, breaking a record set by President Barack Obama with the picture of him hugging First Lady Michelle Obama after his re-election in 2012. Twitter also sent out an apology because all of the retweeting disrupted service for more than 20 minutes after 10 p.m. ET.

Companies have long spoken out about certain issues they felt threatened their bottom lines, such as taxation and the minimum wage. The strong opposition to the Arizona bill signals an acknowledgement by businesses that it’s not just economic policies that can be harmful to their profits. They need to be more willing than ever to wade into social issues.

Voicing concern for their employees, customers and bottom lines, prominent companies from American Airlines to Verizon used threats of reduced business to help convince Arizona Gov. news highlight ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ Strikes Gold

AIDS drama wins acting awards John McDonald jeanmichelmcdonald@gmail.com

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both took home shiney gold statues at this year’s Oscars. The actors of “Dallas Buyers Club,” the best picture-nominated drama about AIDS in 1980s Texas, were honored by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. McConaughey and Leto won best actor and best supporting actor for their roles in the film as a heterosexual rodeo rat (McConaughey) and a transgender drug addict (Leto) united by HIV. “Thirty-six million people who have lost the battle to AIDS and to those of you out there who have ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love, tonight I stand here in front of the world with you and for you,” said Leto is his acceptance speech. “Dallas Buyers Club” took two decades to get made after countless executives balked at financing such a tale. McConaughey lost 50 pounds for the role of Ron Woodruff, a cowboy who fought the U.S. government during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s to provide patients with medicines he imported from foreign countries.

In his acceptance speech, McConaughey, 44, thanked “God, because that’s who I look up to. He’s graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand. He has shown me that it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates.” McConaughey was chosen over other nominees Bruce Dern for “Nebraska,” Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Wolf of Wall Street,” Chiwetel Ejiofor for “12 Years a Slave,” and Christian Bale for “American Hustle.” “12 Years a Slave” – a griping drama about pre-civil war America -- won best picture. Elsewhere at the Oscars, lesbians Robin Roberts and Ellen DeGeneres conducted many interviews throughout the evening with DeGeneres hosting the proceedings. The 2014 show was the 86th broadcast of the Academy Awards.

exas Attorney General Greg Abbott

Compiled by John McDonald

Texas AG Fighting Gay Marriage Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott’s office is putting together an appeal of a federal judge’s decision to lift the state’s ban on gay marriage. U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia ruled last week the ban was unconstitutional. But the judge is allowing the law to remain in place to give Abbott time to appeal to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, noting that the issue will likely end up at the U.S. Supreme Court. Abbott, the leading candidate to replace Republican Gov. Rick Perry, took a conciliatory tone after the ruling. He said, “there are good, wellmeaning people on both sides” of the same-sex marriage debate, but he insisted states have the right to set

their own marriage laws. He said Texas voters did just that in 2005, by passing a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between a man and a woman. “As the lower court acknowledged today, it’s an issue that will ultimately be resolved by a higher court,” Abbott said, adding that Texas would begin that process by appealing to the 5th Circuit. In his ruling, Garcia said marriage was an individual right that a voterapproved constitutional amendment couldn’t deny. He said his decision was not made “in defiance of the great people of Texas or the Texas Legislature,” but in compliance with the U.S. Constitution and Supreme

Florida Agenda Publisher Releases Autobiography

One Time Gay Tennis Pro Tells His Tale Joseph Long Florida Agenda Publisher Bobby Blair is now an author. His autobiographical book, ‘Hiding Behind the Baselines,’ was released on February 21, and he was signing copies at the Pridefest in Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale last weekend. A former United States National Junior and Collegiate Tennis Champion and world ranked player, Blair’s story chronicles his fear and turmoil of being a world class athlete in the 1980’s while hiding his sexuality from the public. Blair was once ranked in the top five tennis players in the United States nationally in the Boys 18 and under division. He went on to compete in the 1986 Goodwill Games in Russia, and eventually became a coach and tennis academy owner. Tennis hall of famer Billie Jean King and star ESPN sports columnist Liz Granderson have commented favorably about the book. Blair has stated that he hopes the book “will make a big difference for all people experiencing challenges with sexual orientation.” He mentioned that his goal was to do his part in “breaking down barriers with parents, family members, friends, teachers, coaches, sponsors, and fans.”

Court precedent. “Without a rational relation to a legitimate governmental purpose, state-imposed inequality can find no refuge in our United States Constitution,” he wrote. Garcia’s ruling added to a tangled web of court rulings, state laws and legal opinions across the country that is expected to end up before the U.S. Supreme Court. There are civil rights lawsuits in 24 states asking courts to overturn bans on state gay marriage with and gay rights groups recently winning victories in other conservative states, including Utah and Oklahoma.

daho protests continue

About four dozen gay rights activists were arrested at the Idaho Statehouse last week. This time, the protesters blocked lawmakers and the public from reaching Senate chambers on the west side of the Capitol in Boise. The protesters stood shoulder to shoulderThursday, blocking the hallway to the hearing rooms as well as a door leading outside. The group wants the legislature to add protections based on gender identity and sexual orientation to the Idaho Human Rights Act. Republican leaders have said they will block the issue from even reaching a hearing. Senate pro tem Brent Hill (R-Rexburg) told the Idaho Statesman he respects protesters right to assemble, but not if they interrupt Capitol business. In February alone, Idaho police made 76 arrests at Statehouse demonstrations. The group’s leader, former state Sen. Nicole LeFavour was one of those arrested. Idaho’s first openly gay lawamaker, LeFavour said the activists were determined to stay until committees begin the work to push the issue forward. Located in the pacific northwest region of the United States, Idaho is the 14th largest state by land mass and 39th most populated state. According to Census data from 2010, a little more than 1.5 million people called Idaho home. In 2006, voters in Idaho voted to recognize marriage in the state as a

union of one and one woman. The state’s ban on same-sex marriage is being challenged by four couples in federal court. Last week’s blockade by LeFavour and her group resulted in citations for trespassing and battery. LeFavour, who resigned from the senate in 2012, is outraged her former colleagues have remained silent on the issue of adding four words – “gender identity” and “sexual orientation” to the state’s Human Rights Act. The Idaho senate is comprised of 28 Republicans and seven Democrats. There are 29 male senators and six female senators.

oston mayor pushes for St. Patty’s parade inclusion

Boston’s mayor says he will boycott the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade unless gay groups are allowed to participate. Mayor Martin Walsh says he’s trying to broker a deal with parade organizers to allow a group of gay military veterans to march. The son of Irish immigrants said allowing gay groups to participate is “long overdue.” Parade organizers have offered an olive branch, stating members of MassEquality, a statewide advocacy group, can march in the parade, which draws an estimated one million visitors every year to South Boston. Reaction to the deal has been mixed with some residents of South Boston, a traditionally Irish Catholic

neighborhood, praising the invite as a breakthrough in relations, while gay rights advocates complain there are too many restrictions placed on expressions. Parade organizers have asked MassEquality members not to wear T-shirts or carry placards that identify their sexual orientation. In response, MassEquality issued the following statement, “LGBT people should not have to silence who they are to celebrate other parts of their identity.” The parade is scheduled for March 16 and participation of a gay group would be a watershed moment in “Southie” known for its rough and tough reputation. The neighborhood was home to riots in the 1970s following court ordered busing. In the early 1990s, Massachusetts courts forced parade organizers to allow gay groups to march, resulting in the parade’s 1994 cancellation. In 1995, the United States Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that under the First Amendment’s protection of free speech, the organizers, who pay for the parade with private funds, could exclude anyone they wanted. The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts pushed back against Mayor Walsh’s efforts to include gays in the parade, telling the Boston Globe that gay and lesbian groups taking part in the parade is “entirely inappropriate” and destroys the “traditional character” of the parade.

Equality Florida’s First Palm Beach County Fundraiser Huge Success Donald Cavanaugh

Palm Beach County came out in record numbers to support marriage equality at Equality Florida Institute’s inaugural Palm Beach County fundraising reception on Feb.12, 2014, underwritten by Northern Trust who hosted the affair in their building in North Palm Beach. “It was an absolute sellout,” said Stratton Pollitzer, deputy director of the agency. “We had more than 230 people and everyone had a great time.” “We had originally set a goal of $35,000 but we quickly upped that to $50,000 and once we get a final accounting I’m sure we will have exceeded that, too,” he added. “We blew it out of the water,” said Allan Hendricks, Equality Florida’s Palm Beach County Steering Committee chair. “The place was like a piece of Palm Beach [Island] with incredible lighting and a wedding theme designed with gowns and tuxes and fabrics with a seven layer wedding cake as centerpiece. Amazing.”

$150

The elegant wedding décor design was provided by Jeff Fowler, senior event sales manager at The Breakers. Several corporate sponsors helped underwrite the decorations. At press time more than 15 corporate sponsors (including SFGN) were listed on the Equality Florida website. “There were hors d’oeuvres and food stations around the perimeter of the space… offered a variety of food – just like a fancy wedding,” said Charlie Fredrickson, a long-time advocate for civil equality and member of the host committee made up of nine couples and six individuals who helped underwrite the program. Also present was one of the six couples who, with Equality Florida, recently filed suit in Florida sate court in Miami. Don Johnston and Jorge Diaz, whose brother was the

former mayor of Miami, Manny Diaz, drove up to attend the festivities. Many people thanked the couple and wished them luck in the suit. Hendricks was one of two Voice for Equality Award recipients recognized at the event; the other was Rand Hoch, founder and president of the 25-year-old Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC). “We didn’t get to say much more than ‘thank you,’” said Hendricks. “But it was nice to be recognized for the work our group has done.” “It was a very nice event,” Hoch said. “I just wish I’d had a couple of minutes to recognize some of the people who make PBCHRC what it is. Dan Hall has over 20 years as intake manager and treasurer; Rae Franks who is in charge of our candidate screening, and Trent Steele has been our lead litigator for more than 10 years are the ones who make it work.” Equality Florida CEO, Nadine Smith, was scheduled to give a state of the state address but was called to Tallahassee at the last minute and could not attend.

news local “She had to meet with lobbyists about the Florida Competitive Workforce Act,” Pollitzer said. “In fact,” he added, “If there’s one takeaway from the state of the state, it’s that in Tallahassee we are gaining bi-partisan support unprecedented in our nation. Scores of Republicans are joining Democrats in calling for an end to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.” “Everything was wonderful,” said Connie Kurtz who, with her wife, Ruth Berman (known for the HBO documentary “Connie & Ruthie: Every Room in the House.”) were members of the host committee. “It was welcoming. It was beautiful. There was nothing skimpy but it wasn’t ostentatious. It was amazing how they turned a bank building into a wedding palace.” “Stratton Pollitzer spoke extremely well and no one shied away from the pledge cards when they were being distributed,” she said. “Really, there was a sense of welcome and friendship and common cause. Ruthie and I had a very good time.”

Street Art of Two Male Police Officers Kissing Sells for $575,000 Christiana Lilly

A piece of street art depicting two British, male police officers kissing sold in Miami for $575,000 to an anonymous buyer. “Kissing Coppers” was created by the anonymous street artist, Banksy, and is considered one of his most famous pieces. It changed hands several times before arriving at the Fine Art Auctions Miami (FAAM) at LMNT gallery. “Banksy is one of the most important street artists today,” says Sebastien Laboureau, a street art expert and CEO of MoonStar Fine Arts Advisors. FAAM introduced a small selection of street art at its 2013 auction, then this year turned it into an event of its own, the Street Art Exhibition. The most highly anticipated piece of art at the auction was the controversial “Kissing Coppers,” a true show of the changing attitude towards LGBT relationships — outside of the gallery, an ad featured the piece covering the entire side of the wall facing the street. Since the piece was created, gay marriage has become much more

amfAR is Counting Down

New research kicks off with over $2 million in grants, Florida researchers get $360,000 Sasha Razumikhin With 12 grants the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) is giving out the largest ever sum of money in one round. It’s part of the foundation’s Countdown to a Cure for HIV/AIDS campaign, which aims to find a “broadly applicable” cure to HIV/ AIDS by 2020. Part of the money comes from a $720,000 donation from the Foundation for AIDS and Immune Research. “The scientific challenges to a cure for HIV have been illuminated, and with the right investments, these challenges can be overcome,” said amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost. “That’s the philosophy behind amfAR’s “Countdown to a Cure,” and these new grants represent our strengthened commitment to high-impact, smarter research that will accelerate our progress toward a cure.” According to amfAR, the new grants will enable researchers to explore strategies to overcome a critical barrier to curing HIV— eliminating reservoirs of infected cells that persist in various parts of the body and

remain below the radar of a person’s immune system or standard HIV medications. To this end, amfAR threw down four roadblocks to accomplish its mission: chart the precise locations of the reservoirs, understand how persistent HIV reservoirs are established and maintained, record how much virus they hold and ultimately, eliminate them. Out of the 12 grantees of $2.15 million, $360,000 went to Dr. Cheryl Cameron and Dr. Rafick-Pierre Sekaley at the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute of Florida, each getting half of the pie. Here’s what these researchers are going to work on, according to amfAR (to learn more about all of the amfAR-funded researchers, go to http://bit.ly/NmFfMy):

Florida, Port St. Lucie, FL • $180,000 Cameron and her colleagues will investigate the possibility that mTOR, a protein normally involved in several functions important to a cell’s growth and ability to make proteins, plays a role in determining the size of the HIV reservoir. They are building on the hypothesis that an immune suppressive drug called sirolimus, which blocks the mTOR protein, may have contributed to the reduced reservoir size in HIV patients receiving stem cell transplants to treat their cancer. Cameron is looking to confirm the relationship between mTOR and reservoir size, which could lead to a way to treat patients to reduce their reservoir sizes.

Modulating Inflammation for Immune Reconstitution and HIV Eradication Rafick-Pierre Sékaly, Ph.D., from the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute Florida, Port St Lucie, FL • $179,935 After the Berlin patient was cured of HIV, researchers became very interested in Dissecting the Role of the the potential of gene therapy to generate mTOR pathway in CD8 Restriction a source of cells to transplant into HIVof HIV Persistence positive patients as a potential cure. One Cheryl Cameron, Ph.D., from the company, Sangamo, has used an enzyme Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute of called zinc finger nuclease to cut the protein

CCR5 out of patients’ T cells in a test tube, producing cells similar to those transplanted into the Berlin patient. After transplanting these modified cells back into patients, they have observed varying levels of restoration of the immune system. Sekaly hypothesizes that the survival of the transplanted cells depends on the level of immune inflammation at the time of transplantation. He will use samples of blood and tissue from the Sangamo studies to test his hypothesis. “Our scientific reviewers were unanimous in praising the caliber of research proposals submitted in this round of awards,” said Dr. Rowena Johnston, amfAR’s vice president and director of research. “Our job is to explore as many routes as possible to get to a broadly applicable cure, and that means equipping scientists around the world with the resources they need to help us achieve our goal sooner rather than later.”

AmfAR has been around since 1985 and has invested more than $388 million in its programs and has awarded more than 3,300 grants to research teams worldwide. To learn more, go to amfar.org.

news local Two Openly Gay Candidates to Face Off in Primary

Benjamin Lap to face Ken Keechl for Broward commission seat John McDonald There will be a primary election in Broward County. The race to watch in District 4 is beginning to take shape with openly gay Democrats Benjamin P. Lap and Ken Keechl vying for an opportunity to face incumbent Commissioner Chip LaMarca, a Republican. SFGN spoke with Lap recently in a telephone interview. He sounded confident and ready to campaign with a key understanding of the issues affecting residents of his district. “I can accomplish things and make improvements to Broward County,” Lap said. A bio-tech entrepreneur, Lap, 56, is no stranger to politics. He has raised money across the nation for Democratic candidates at all levels of office. He feels his executive experience and take charge attitude are reasons why people in Broward County’s District 4 will support him. “My business and legal background is my strength,” Lap said. “I started my own biotech company and it’s up and running. I’ve also been a mediator — a mother hen if you will — with the U.S. Treasury. I have effective and useful skills.” The Broward County Commission is a nine-member governing body. LaMarca, a lifelong resident of the district, was elected to the seat in 2010, defeating Keechl, who served as commissioner since 2006. “If you are going to complain about things, you gotta put yourself out there,” Lap said. Lap raised a number of issues during his chat with SFGN, issues he said would be part of his platform. He would like to see the county raise its minimum wage for workers, describing himself as a “progressive candidate for a fair wage.” Lap acknowledged traffic and infrastructure will be important issues that come before the commission and said he “can weigh in on it.” “From a less reactionary to a more long term vision perspective,” he said of his planning credentials. Lap founded BioSentinel, Inc. in 2003 and currently serves as chairman. He was raised in Florida, is a graduate of the New York University School of Law and holds an MBA from the Chicago School of Business. He received his Bachelor’s degree with honors from Wesleyan University in 1978. Of his primary opponent, Keechl, Lap said, “He’s had his chance. The record is there.” The primary is scheduled for Aug. 26 with the general election to follow in November. Keechl was Broward County’s first openly

gay mayor. The former commissioner has already kicked off his campaign, and will be hosting a fundraiser on March 12 at the Fort Lauderdale home of Coleman Prewitt and Mark Conaghan. SFGN will provide news updates on the race as it unfolds.

My business and “legal background is my strength” - Benjamin Lap Lap will face off against Ken Keechl, Broward’s first openly gay mayor, who has been a commissioner since 2006, for the opportunity to go up against Republican incumbent Commissioner Chip LaMarca.

news national LGBT Youth Face Challenges; Needs Government Help Sasha Razumkhin

The government needs to do more than reach at-risk LGBT youth after they get into trouble, says the Williams Institute. The University of California, Los Angeles, think tank released its findings and recommendations in a January study called Ensuring Access to Mentoring Programs for LGBTQ Youth, presenting step-by-step direction on how to help the 1.6 million atrisk LGBT youth that could benefit from such measures.

“Programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters and Boys and Girls Clubs of America have the potential to provide lifechanging experiences for LGBTQ youth,” said Williams Institute Executive Director Brad Sears, who co-authored the study. “Trainings for staff and mentors and outreach to LGBT youth are just a couple of effective strategies organizations can use to help reduce the

currently high LGBTQ youth involvement with the juvenile justice system.” While this may seem to be a given, research shows that there is evidence showing that some organizations are unwelcoming of LGBTQ youth, and discriminate against them when they try to seek services. According to the institute’s study:

LGBTQ youth are overrepresented in the juvenile justice system, which may be due, in part, to selective enforcement of criminal laws against them. They also experience higher rates of family rejection, school harassment

and bullying, homelessness, and a host of other factors related to their identity that put them at increased risk of involvement with the system. Youth mentoring organizations are designed to address the challenges at-risk youth face in their daily lives, but

Here’s what the institute recommends can be done to fix some of these issues:

• Adopting internal policies and practices • Youth mentoring programs can adopt a number of policies and practices to ensure that their programs are accessible and welcoming to LGBTQ youth.

How? Like this:

• Sexual orientation and gender identity non-discrimination and anti-harassment policies, and confidentiality policies • Inclusion of LGBTQ identity-affirming language on websites and other materials • Staff trainings focused on “best practices” for mentoring LGBTQ youth • Outreach practices targeting LGBTQ youth and LGBTQ-affirming mentors • Establishing LGBTQ-focused youth mentoring programs • Government and foundations can encourage development of private programs for mentoring LGBTQ youth. • Implementing non-discrimination requirements in youth mentoring program grants To further the objectives of youth mentoring programs, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention within the Department of Justice has the authority to issue guidance prohibiting grantees from discriminating based on sexual orientation and gender identity, to designate LGBTQ youth as an underserved population, and to specifically fund programs for LGBTQ youth. Diversity Wins in Hollywood Jessica Herndon & Jake Coyle AP Film Writers

Diversity was perhaps the biggest winner at the 86th annual Academy Awards. For the first time, a film directed by a black filmmaker, Steve McQueen of “12 Years a Slave,” won best picture and a Latino, Alfonso Cuaron of “Gravity,” took home best director in a ceremony presided over by a lesbian host and overseen by the academy’s first black president. And only two of the top six awards went to Americans. McQueen’s grimly historical drama “12 Years a Slave” took best picture, leading the usually sedate filmmaker to jump up and down in celebration after his acceptance speech. The British director dedicated his award to “all of the people who endured slavery and the 21 million people who still suffer slavery today.” Cuaron’s lost-in-space thriller “Gravity” led the Oscars with seven awards, including cinematography, editing, score, visual effects, sound mixing and sound editing. Some in his native Mexico have been critical that since the attention came for a Hollywood release and not a Mexican-themed film, his win didn’t have the same kind of importance. “I’m Mexican so I hope some Mexicans were rooting for me,” he told reporters backstage. The entire Oscar ceremony had the feel of a make-over for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – an institution that has sometimes seemed stuck in the past. After a Los Angeles Times report revealed the academy was overwhelming older white men, new president Cheryl Boone Isaacs has pushed for a more varied membership. The movie industry that the Oscars reflect has also been reluctant to tell a wider range of stories. “Dallas Buyers Club,” the best picturenominated drama about AIDS in 1980s Texas, took two decades to get made after countless executives balked at financing such a tale. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, the two Americans in the top six awards, took best actor and best supporting actor titles for their roles in the film as a heterosexual rodeo rat (McConaughey) and a transgender drug addict (Leto) united by HIV. “Thirty-six million people who have lost the battle to AIDS and to those of you out there who have ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love, tonight I

stand here in front of the world with you and for you,” said Leto in his acceptance speech. Cate Blanchett, the Australian bestactress winner for her bitter, ruined socialite in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine,” used her acceptance speech to trumpet the need to make films with female leads – films like her own and like “Gravity,” starring Sandra Bullock. A study by analyst Kevin B. Lee found that last year’s lead actors averaged 100 minutes on screen, but lead actresses averaged only 49 minutes. “To the audiences who went to see the film and perhaps those of us in the industry who are still foolishly clinging to the idea that female films, with women at the center, are niche experiences, they are not,” said Blanchett. “Audiences want to see them and, in fact, they earn money.” “12 Years a Slave” also won awards in the writing and acting categories. John Ridley picked up the trophy for best adapted screenplay, which was based on

the 1853 memoir by Solomon Northup. The screenwriter is only the second black writer (Geoffrey Fletcher won for “Precious” in 2009) to win in the category. Backstage, the “12 Years” team mentioned their efforts to include Solomon Northup’s memoir as part of high school study. The National School Boards Association announced in February that the book is now mandatory reading. “It’s important that we understand our history so we can understand who we were and who we are now and most importantly who we’re going to be,” said Brad Pitt, who produced “12 Years.” “We hope that this film remains a gentle reminder that we’re all equal. We all want the same: Dignity and opportunity.” Lupita Nyong’o was a first-time Oscar winner for her supporting role as field slave Patsey in “12 Years.” “I’m a little dazed,” said Nyong’o backstage. “I can’t believe this is real life.” Nyong’o is the sixth black actress to win in the supporting actress category – and the first major Oscar win for Kenya (the president of Kenya congratulated her in a tweet) – following Hattie McDaniel (“Gone with the Wind”), Whoopi Goldberg (“Ghost”), Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”), Mo’Nique (“Precious”’’) and Octavia soflagaynews //

Spencer (“The Help”). Foreign language film nominees included “The Missing Picture,” the first-ever Oscar-nominated film from Cambodia. “The Act of Killing,” a dark look into the mass killings of communists and ethnic Chinese in Indonesia in the 1960s, was nominated for best documentary feature. In her second time hosting, openly gay Ellen DeGeneres sought to make celebrities more like plain folk. She passed out slices of pizza to the front rows at the Dolby Theatre, then passed the hat to pay for it. She also tweeted a “selfie” with such stars as Meryl Streep, Julie Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Pitt and Nyong’o. The shot “made history,” DeGeneres told the audience later. It’s since been retweeted more than 2 million times.

Your Penis is Showing!

What you put out there may come back to haunt you Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

There are more than a million men on Grindr in the United States. Did you ever think about what happens to the things you say and the pictures you share? It doesn’t just have to be Grindr. There are a host of popular gay social apps, including, to the best of my recollection, Hornet, Scruff, Growlr, Jack’d, Manhunt, Adam4Adam, VGL, Mister, and Daddyhunt, to name a few. There are probably a host of others, as well, all owned and operated by private individuals or for profit corporations. Have you ever stopped to think about what is going on with those pictures of your penis that you privately shared with the stud you just felt you had to meet? Wondering about the intimate communications you published to others about the private things you like to have done to you in bed? Ever stop and think what they might be worth to business competitors, ex-lovers, or to litigants in a contested divorce case? Does blackmail and extortion come to mind? It could. It should. Who are the operators of these companies? Do you know anything about them? Are they storing your shared communications in a massive database accessible to them - but not to you? Are they secretly sharing it with others? There are no regulations limiting who owns any of these companies. Scared? You should be. Every time you go online, you are not telling just that potential lover what you are into; you are creating a reservoir of information for some private business entity to collect about some of your most secret predispositions. When SFGN did a cover story on Grindr in November of 2012, were they ever willing to talk, gushing about their international outreach, and laying tribute to the technology they have mastered. But could they now master you? How about when the police call and say they are doing an investigation? Are these companies cooperating instantly or protecting your privacy? When a kid such as Ryan Uhre goes missing and there is information his last known human contact was on Grindr, do

they just immediately share that information with authorities? Through their press representative, they said they “always cooperate with authorities.” Oh, really? Is it at the expense of your rights, or in furtherance of a legitimate inquiry? Do they require subpoenas or just roll over, because that is simpler and cheaper? What if you were sued, and your ex partner seeking to establish your infidelity, subpoenaed your Grindr account? Are these social apps saving and storing your communications? Grindr’s PR department suddenly was not so responsive when we told them we were doing this type of article. Puffery, they like, but sharing their own private parts they were not too happy about. Methinks there is a lot they want you to know not. Did Grindr actively assist the police in Uhre’s investigation, or did they pose obstacles? I tried to ask the owner of the company, Joel Simkhal. I left him four messages on his private cell phone. He returned none. I mean, he at least could have sent me a message on Grindr Extra. Taking their time, the Grindr PR department responded to SFGN inquiries with a series of seemingly canned responses. “Of course, we cooperate with authorities,” they said. Well, how and when? You mean all a police agency has to do is ask for records and you give it to them? Or do you require a subpoena? Have you gone to court to protect the confidentiality of communications sent out privately by your paying customers? How about sharing with us some of your policies related to privacy? A spokesperson for Grindr said “Grindr does not store delivered chats on their servers.” But how do we really know that’s the case? The National Security Agency once said they didn’t spy on us too. What about the thousands of people who work all these social apps from here to Australia? Who is watching the watchers, the lower level guys that operate servers and collect communications from continent to

continent? Do they have access at any time to your ‘private’ photos? They do, folks, they do. You may have deleted a photo, but did they? Or is it stored on a server with your name and email address in it? Take a guess. We call this the information age for a reason. Last year, Edward Snowden exposed to the nation how the NSA was creating an astounding and vast database of private emails that invaded the constitutional rights of American citizens. The NSA is better known today as our National Spying Agency. That’s our government, restrained at least a little bit by the Bill of Rights. The social app industry is not. When it comes to these gay hookup sites, we are talking about private companies who get their authority to start collecting and storing your private data the moment you hit that ‘accept’ button on their application. You know, the one saying you acknowledge and have read those rules and regulations none of us ever read. Gay social apps have opened doors for hundreds of thousands of gay men to meet from Australia to America. Travelling often and landing in cities where I know no one, I enjoy, subscribe to, and use them. However, I probably won’t do what the Chief Judge of Monroe County did; an openly gay man who laid out on Manhunt some very detailed descriptions of his manhood, only to have that then shared on mainstream legal blog sites across the nation. Talk about humiliation! The question I leave you with is have you ever stopped to think how much of your soul you are selling and how much of your privacy you are yielding to unknown persons when you post on these entities?

It’s one thing to post on Facebook that you are eating steamed clams at the Quarterdeck. It’s quite another to be sharing a text that you would like to stuff those clams into a guy’s private parts. If we can pass laws that outlaw revenge porn, maybe we ought to be passing laws mandating that social apps like I am talking about here be federally prohibited from collecting, saving and storing shared communications between adults on servers. Let’s mandate that the Manhunts of the world be banned from seeing into your private one.

Gay Business + Straight Business = BIG Business SJ Strock

GLBX Council

It’s an easy equation, when you know your target market, go for it and never be bound by what you may perceive as limitations. All too often, we allow our personal comfort zones to spread into our professional arena, a habit that can easily stunt business growth. Unless your service is specific for “Gay men over age 40” like “The Gay Man’s Matchmaker,” then there is no reason to only market in the gay community. And, even in such a narrow scenario, who’s to say that this straight suburban woman doesn’t have an awesome male friend, age 45 ready to be matched up with another awesome 40ish-old man! Likewise, if your product is not solely targeted for young straight women (and are there really any products like that anymore!), then you need to get out there and tell your story. The bottom line is gringos market in the Latino networks and the straight community is happy to join forces with gay and lesbian business owners. So, now what? See and be seen! Join in on the many networking opportunities offered by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce by visiting FTLchamber.com and by marking your calendars for weekly and monthly

events. Women and men are conducting business, while building bridges at events such as Downtown Breakfast, Beach Council, Weston Power Luncheon, Circle of Fun, Las Americas, GLBX Monthly Mixers, Founders Circle, and Suits-Stilletos & Lipstick just to name a few. Be sure to attend a variety of leads groups, including the Gay Lesbian Business Exchange [GLBX] Referral Advantage, whose members pass concrete leads and completed business transaction testimonials at every meeting. The Gay and Lesbian Business Exchange [GLBX], a council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, is Broward County’s premier support for Gay and Lesbian owned businesses as well as gay-friendly businesses. **GLBX Referral Advantage Group meets from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., the first & third Wednesday of the month at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Building, 512 NE 3rd Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. After being locked up for nine months, I’ve pretty much decided that prison really and truly sucks. Big surprise, huh? One way I had of coping with my incarceration was to imagine myself in different scenarios to make sense of my surroundings. In the beginning, locked up in the county jail and kept indoors 24/7, I often imagined I was on a spaceship headed for some distant planet. I know it sounds goofy, but the challenges would be similar; confined quarters, boredom, taking a long time to get there. Sometimes I’d switch between a spaceship and some sort of biodome experiment. Then my friend Grey at the detention center in Miami shared how he liked to imagine that he was in a monastery, living a life of deprivation for the purposes of spiritual refinement. I admired the nobility of such a fantasy, plus it had bonus points for explaining why the place was such a sausage fest. After being moved to Oakdale I found out that Grey had been sentenced to sixty years. I can’t imagine what one would pretend in order to deal with that. When I first got here and saw all the khaki it was easy to imagine that I was simply in the U.S. Navy. But I’ve been here several weeks now and there seems to be little use in denying reality any longer. I am in prison, where today is just like yesterday was, and tomorrow will most likely be, a pattern that will repeat over and over for the next few years. So yes, today I am feeling a bit down. Surely this is just a temporary funk, part of the process of adjustment. I have to remind myself that it’s important to keep in mind how relatively fortunate I was in the sentence I received, and to gain strength

SouthFloridaGayNews

from my fellow inmates who are coping with much longer amounts of time to serve. As they say here, you do the time, don’t let the time do you. Actually, if I really look at the facts and not just my feelings (always a challenge for an addict), I have to admit that things really aren’t so bad. In fact, I can find plenty to be downright grateful for. I have managed to make a few friends here. After a bit of unpleasantness with my previous cellies,

I managed to move into a much better cell with other SO’s [sexual offenders], all of whom are good guys and two of which are also gay. I’ve also been assigned to work in the cafeteria five days a week on the serving line, for which I actually get paid a staggering .22 cents an hour. In my kitchen whites I look exactly like a Good Humor man. Now there’s a touch of irony. Speaking of food, it’s a far cry better here than what I wrote about in a previous column. No more mystery meat, no more hot bologna, or hotdogs served on corn tortillas. It’s still prison food, heavy on the carbohydrates, but at least they seem to make an effort with it. And there’s a sweet little library with enough to keep my reading needs satiated for the duration of my stay. About that duration: I found out this past week that I might be eligible for up to twelve months off my sentence upon my completion of the Bureau of Prison’s drug treatment program! More on that later, but definitely something to look forward to. Most importantly, despite what I put them through, I still have friends and family who love and support me. It gives me a great deal of comfort to know I’ll have a future with them in my life. #50095-004

Drive This, Not That

2014 Chevrolet Silverado vs. 2014 Ford F-150 Steve Siler Winner: 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

Full-size pickups used to be synonymous with cowboys, road crews, and — fine, I’ll go there — lesbians. But nowadays, big trucks aren’t just for the sturdy set, but are suitable for a variety of lifestyles that occasionally involve towing or carrying stuff, but don’t necessarily revolve around said activities. What hasn’t changed in the last, say, 50 years or so is the rivalry between Ford and Chevrolet for full-size truck supremacy. And this year, Chevy’s redesigned Silverado, which was recently crowned North American Truck of the Year, is far and away the better truck compared to the ubiquitous F-150. With modern amenities like app-based infotainment, a padded dash top, Mercedes-like craftsmanship, available heated and cooled seats, lane departure warning and other great stuff, the Silverado is as comfortable as an everyday vehicle — even a luxury vehicle — as it is a work truck. Handling is decent for something this rugged and capable, and the

cabin is library quiet at speed. Gotta be careful, though, as prices can creep up in to the $40K — $50K range (or even higher) without much problem. Ford isn’t letting the Silverado reign unchallenged for long, as its all-new, lightweight 2015 F-150 is waiting in the wings for its debut by year’s end. Let the battle for the big truck tiara continue!

Naked Grape Wine Bar SFGN Staff

We’d be hard-pressed to detail Naked Grape’s delicious menu because it may change by the time you go in for a visit. But that’s the best part. The restaurant’s food and drink menus change every few months, usually with the seasons. At any given time, the bar has 80 different wines, offering nearly 35 of them by glass. The bar specializes in boutique and limited production offerings. The wine list changes almost weekly. They are the self-proclaimed “wine without attitude” bar. Behind the counter, Tim will let you sample whatever wine you’d like until you’re satisfied. Your experience shouldn’t be limited to the way a bottle looks or how a description sounds. Taste until you find something you’ll enjoy. When you do, don’t hesitate to buy a bottle. Naked Grape has a retail license where you can purchase your favorite new wine to go. For summer, we tasted the 2011 Anno Domini Moscato. While red wine drinkers tend to stay the course—even during the hot and humid South Florida months—we were happy to sip the cool, sweet Moscato as the sun went down. With half-price bottles on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, it’s hard to pass up this delicious Italian drink. While wine may be in the restaurant’s name, don’t ignore the tapas. Indulge in cheese decadence with the Swiss fondue: paired with bread cubes and your choice of salami or green apples. Look out for the extensive offerings of charcuterie and cheese – served with baguettes, condiments and

garnishes including chutney, fruits, olives and more. Try the shrimp flatbread: a large piece of toasted flatbread topped with homemade pesto, roasted red peppers and shrimp. This pairs great with the Moscato or another light, sweet wine. Close out your evening with one of the four specialty dessert options, including a personal pan Toll House cookie, baked in a mini cast-iron skillet and served with a tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream. Everything is made fresh to order while also offering naturally and organically grown food. The restaurant buys local whenever possible, supporting their “farm to fork” initiative. Food is served until one hour before closing, which means on the weekends, you can eat until midnight! While the restaurant is open TuesdaySaturday evenings, private parties and events on Sundays and Mondays are available upon request. With their extensive wine list, delicious small plates and knowledgeable staff, you’re never too far away from the Naked Grape Wine Bar. A Guide to Winter Party 2014 More events, more women and (hopefully) more money! Christiana Lilly Since 1994, thousands of people have come out to party hard on South Beach and help raise money for the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force. For Winter Party Festival Chairman Victor Diaz-Herman, it was a mesmerizing scene on the dance floor at Cameo nightclub 10 years ago that got him involved with the hugely successful annual event — even before he was out. “I saw this sea of people just dancing in unison. It was like a wave that kept going through the dance floor, and everybody there was living for the moment and free of prejudice, free of any kind of restrictions they have or injustices they have in their own

states or whatever country they came from, and just simply enjoying the moment,” DiazHerman remembers. “I was so impressed by our ability to create that atmosphere that it motivated me to get more involved with the Winter Party.” Ten years later, the executive director of Pridelines Youth Services says that this year’s party — and his last — will be better than ever. Over the years, more programs for women have been incorporated and bigger and better DJs have been booked for raucous, all nighters. The National Hotel has come on as a new sponsor hotel this year. Also, highly anticipated acts by DJs Brett Henrichsen,

Grind and Joe Gauthreaux are expected to fill up the clubs quickly. Also, the shopping event at Lincoln Road has expanded this year, now dubbed The Social, with the entire South Florida community invited to shop til’ they drop at participating stores. Plus, for $9.99, shoppers can download an app that’ll give them opportunities for even more sales and goodies. “Ten years ago, we were a great party. Now we’re an amazing party,” Diaz-Herman said. Since 2005, $1.65 million has been raised. Last year, more than 10,000 people from around the world hit the strip to dance their worries away. Money goes to the task

force, as well as the Miami Foundation for local nonprofits to win through grants. Staff can expect to raise even more money to go to the betterment of the LGBT community, as of press time they’re already more than $100,000 ahead of where they were last year in fundraising. All of the passes have been sold out, too. “I’m really excited to be a part of it and to welcome our guests from around the world to sunny Miami Beach while the rest of the country and parts of the world are freezing,” Diaz-Herman laughed. a&e film A ‘Gay’ Look at the Miami Film Fest

“Midnight Cowboy” And in case you pick up SFGN early enough here’s a quick look at this weekend’s movies:

“Remembering the Artist”

“Fading Gigolo”

March 9, 7 p.m., at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center The festival includes a tribute to actordirector John Turturro, who will receive the festival’s Career Achievement Award after a screening of his latest film “Fading Gigolo.”

As the Miami International Film Festival gets underway this Friday, there are several fantastic LGBT films for queer audiences to check out before the fest ends March 16. High on the list of must-see films is “The Dog” (March 14, 7 p.m., O Cinema; March 15, 2 p.m., Paragon Grove), a dazzling documentary about John Wojtowicz, a man who robbed a bank to pay for his lover’s sex change. Wojtowicz’s crime was the inspiration for the classic film, “Dog Day Afternoon.” Using interviews with the late subject as well as testimonies, film clips, and photographs, filmmakers Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren tell a story that is truly stranger than fiction — and far more complicated than what the Al Pacino film depicted. Wojtowicz is quite a character; he obviously enjoys the opportunity to tell his story. It’s a whopper, full of hilarious and head-spinning revelations. Another terrific doc is “Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr.” (March 13, 7 p.m., Coral Gables Art Cinema; March 16, 4:15 p.m., Paragon Grove). Most fans of Robert DeNiro may not know that his father was an accomplished if under-appreciated artist. DeNiro Sr. exhibited in Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century Gallery, and was a contemporary of abstract expressionists like Pollock, de Kooning, and Rothko. Yet DeNiro Sr. was different; he was a figurative painter influenced by French masters, and therefore marginalized in the 1950s New York art scene. Not only did he not fit in with the other artists of his era, he was also odd man out when pop artists, like Andy Warhol, came to prominence in the 1960s. As this wistful but affectionate short film shows, DeNiro Sr. was also a gay man, who struggled with conflicted feelings about his sexuality. “Remembering the Artist” features poignant photographs, film clips, diary excerpts and interviews with DeNiro Jr., as well as artists and critics, to illuminate the

life and career of the late DeNiro Sr. and give him the respect and recognition he craved. Not queer, but not to be missed, is “Finding Vivien Maier” (March 9, 6:30 p.m., Regal South Beach; March 9, Regal South Beach, 4:15 p.m.). The late Maier was a nanny who left behind an extraordinary legacy: over 100,000 outstanding photographs she took on the streets of Chicago and elsewhere. John Maloof, who purchased a box of Maier’s negatives at an auction for under $500, was astonished by his discovery, and viewers unfamiliar with her work will be as well. “Finding Vivian Maier” pieces together the story behind this private and highly secretive photographer, an inveterate hoarder who used fake names and a fake accent, and once told someone she was a “sort of spy.” The Miami International Film Festival is also showcasing a special 45th Anniversary screening of the Oscar winning (and X-rated) classic, “Midnight Cowboy” on March 13 at 7 p.m. at the Miami Beach Cinematheque. Gay British filmmaker John Schlesinger won a Best Director Oscar for this drama, a savage commentary on America and the sexual mores of the time (the 1960s). The film depicts the unlikely friendship that develops between Joe Buck (Jon Voight in a careermaking performance), a Texas hustler, and the sickly con man, Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman in an indelible role). When Buck moves to New York to earn money as a gigolo, he fails epically. His early tryst with Sylvia Miles (deliciously nervy) has him paying her, while his same-sex encounter with a young gay student (Bob Balaban) yields no payment whatsoever. Down on his luck, he moves in with Ratso and the two men eke out a life together. They even attend a psychedelic party along with Andy Warhol’s factory denizens. Seen today, “Midnight Cowboy” may feel a bit dated, but the spectacular performances still resonate. One of the Fest’s lesser entries is “15 Years

“Elsa & Fred”

March 7, 7 p.m. at the Olympia Theater This comedy-drama is the American remake of a popular 2005 Argentina/Spain co-production about two octogenarian neighbors who develop a relationship that just might be love. “Tattoo”

+ 1 Day” (March 7, 9:30 p.m. Regal South Beach; March 8, 4:30 p.m., O Cinema; March 9, 9:30 p.m., Regal South Beach), a watchable Spanish melodrama. After being expelled from school, Jon (Aron Piper) is sent to live with his grandfather Max (Tito Valverde). As he adapts to his new life, he falls in with a bad crowd, which culminates in a crime being committed after Jon has a fight with his gay tutor Toni (Boris Cucalón). Even as “15 Years + 1 Day” pulls out all the soap opera cliches— comas, amnesia, suicide, a poisoned dog—it somehow remains a passable time filler. Two highly anticipated films with queer content were unfortunately not available for preview. “Salvation Army” (March 15, 6 p.m., Regal South Beach; March 16, 6:45 p.m., Paragon Grove) is the directorial debut of the openly gay Morrocan author Abdellah Taia, who adapted his own autobiographical novel about a teenager coming out and coming of age as he embarks on a scandalous affair. “Eastern Boys” (March 7, 9:30 p.m., Coral Gables Art Cinema; March 16, 6:30 p.m., Regal South Beach), concerns a French man (Olivier Rabourdin) who gets intimately involved with a young Eastern European male prostitute named Marek (Kirill Emelyanov), with some potentially dangerous consequences. At the Coral Gables Cinema that same night at 7 p.m. “Tattoo” has encore presentations March 9 at 2 p.m. at the O Cinema, and March 16 at 1:15 p.m. at the Paragon Grove Written and directed by Hilton Lacerda, this period film, set in 1976, features a theater troupe headed by Clécio (Irandhir Santos), a charismatic gay man who uses mockery as a weapon. “Those Happy Years”

March 9, 1 p.m., Regal South Beach; March 16, 2:15 p.m., Paragon Grove Set in 1974, Guido (Kim Rossi Stuart) is a Roman artist whose nude painting performance piece gets lousy reviews, sending him into a funk. “Unicorn”

Part of the Papi Shorts Program II, March 9, 7:15 pm, Regal South Beach This 30-minute drama, inspired by a true story, opens with a Bolivian Bold News report about Isaac (Douglas Porter), a distractingly handsome twenty-something Mennonite who was held captive in a box by his parents for various transgressions. “Young & Beautiful”

March 9, 6:30 p.m., Regal South Beach; March 16, 6:45 p.m., Regal South Beach This exquisitely filmed drama chronicles a year in the life of 17-year-old Isabelle (Marine Vacth) after she loses her virginity at the beach one summer. a&e the arts ‘Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman: A Portrait of My Mother’ Lesbian artist Mickalene Thomas’ portrait of her mom David-Elijah Nahmod

M

ickalene Thomas

On Feb. 24, HBO Documentary Films premiered Mickalene Thomas’ short, sweet tribute to her late mother. Based in New York City, Thomas is best known for her elaborate portrait works depicting the beauty and sexuality of African American women. The artist uses rhinestones, acrylic and enamel in her work, and has had showings around the world. “Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman: A Portrait of My Mother,” is short and sweet. Perhaps it’s too short. At 25 minutes, it introduces viewers to Sandra Bush, Thomas’ mom. The film may leave many viewers wanting to know more. Many years ago, Bush enjoyed a career as a fashion model. Years later, Sandra had a second brush with fame when she became known as Mama Bush, the artist’s muse for her daughter’s work. Thomas is now a respected and acclaimed member of the art world. When we meet Sandra Bush, she’s around sixty years old, emaciated and dying. Photographs of her skeletal current self are juxtaposed of her runway work from decades earlier: we see the stunning beauty she once was. The older Bush isn’t an “aging beauty” she’s a woman who’s ravaged by illness, but who still radiates a spiritual beauty from within her soul. It’s heartbreaking to hear her speak of her desire to live, as she notes that her 91-year-old mother is still in relatively good health.

Sandra speaks of her religious childhood, which was followed by an abusive marriage. While the seeds of feminism were taking root, she had the courage to walk away. As she tells the story of her life’s ups and downs, which include battles with addiction, we see more photographs, as well as images of the Thomas artworks she inspired. It’s a touching film portrait of a strong woman facing her end with sadness, redemption, and courage. Completely missing from the film is any mention of the fact that Thomas is a lesbian. Viewers who know this might wonder how mother and daughter dealt with Thomas’ coming out process. This knowledge, and the works of art that we see in the film, create a yearning to know more about Bush’s and Thomas’ relationship with each other. As a portrait of Sandra Bush, mother and artist’s muse, “Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman” is indeed a lovely film. Had the artist/filmmaker included more of their back-story, it might have been unforgettable. Sandra Bush passed on in 2012. “Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman: A Portrait of My Mother,” can be seen on HBO on the following dates: March 5, 8, 11 and 21. HBO 2 will air the film on March 27. It can also be seen at HBO on Demand and HBOGO.com.

Choral Festival Celebrates Region’s Diversity J.W. Arnold

More than 300 voices, representing 10 choruses from diverse faith, ethnic, cultural, racial and sexual orientation backgrounds will join together to sing in harmony at the 5th Annual South Florida Choral Festival, Saturday, March 8 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Miami. The festival, sponsored by the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus (MGMC), will spotlight both the rich diversity of South Florida and the musical traditions of the participating choruses. “We have something for everyone,” promised Anthony Cabrera, MGMC artistic director. Each of the participating groups will perform individual selections, ranging from popular tunes and barbershop choruses to folk songs and sacred music spanning

centuries. To conclude the concert, the groups will sing together as a massed choir. “It really is something to see these talented artists perform, but the interaction between people who are neighbors but may not normally come into contact with each other is even more impressive because we are planting the seeds for a more cohesive community,” said Cabrera. Participating groups include the Monarch Chorale, Miamians Barbershop Harmony and Amazonia Vocal Ensemble; church choirs from Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Miami and Unity on the Bay; and gay men’s and LGBT ensembles from Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Ft. Myers. Keith M. Hart, president of MGMC,

noted the festival has been a successful opportunity for outreach over the past five years, advancing the chorus mission to “use music to encourage social advocacy and civic engagement to make South Florida a more vibrant, diverse and inclusive community.” “The South Florida Choral Festival has grown to become one of our signature events and as (MGMC) celebrates our 15th anniversary season, we are pleased to be joined with this diverse array of artists from every corner of South Florida,” said Hart. To conclude the program, the massed chorus will sing the hymn, “Amazing Grace,” accompanied by cathedral organist Mathew Steynor on the church’s 88-year-old, 3600 pipe organ, which was refurbished during a $7 million renovation of the cathedral.

Members of the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus will participate with over 300 other singers at the Choral Festival on Saturday, March 8. The 5th Annual South Florida Choral Festival will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral at 464 NE 16th St., Miami. Tickets are $25 at MiamiGayChorus.org

a&e the arts Women Artists Featured in Upcoming Shows Denise Royal March is Women’s History Month. The Pride Center Fort Lauderdale is pleased to present the fourth Annual Women in History Art Show. This year’s theme is Women on the Move. “We felt ‘Movement’ was a great word to really allow for a variety of unique creative expressions. It could be a political movement, a music movement that features a woman that’s made movement in history; it could be a literal movement, etc. There’s so much you could do with that word. Our goal is to provide work that viewers can stand in front of and examine for quite some time and question. Our artists are all in attendance at the event so questions and open discussions are encouraged,” said Judissa Atkinson, co-owner of Closet Talk. But this event is about much more than art. “The purpose of this event is awareness. We are looking to commemorate Women’s History Month

every year by providing an event that brings our community together to celebrate where we came from and where we are going as women. We are very thankful to the Pride Center [at Equality Park] for hosting this art show and supporting not only our local artists but our community,” Atkinson said. The work of 13 artists will be displayed. Those works will be anything from photography to painting to mixed media. The wide variety of artists helps to boost interest in the show each year. “We try to get feed back from the artists and the people that come through the art show and the buyers. Most of them love what we are doing and always want to see more art,” says photographer Angie Sowers, who’s also one of Closet Talk’s curators. The show runs for the entire month of March at The Pride Center at Equality Park. It’s located at 2040 North Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Selected pieces from the art exhibit currently on display at the Pride Center in Wilton Manors.

a&e television Daytime Gay Super-Couple Gets New Half Actor Guy Wilson replaces Chandler Massey David-Elijah Nahmod Sonny and Will, the gay super couple on NBC’s long running daytime drama “Days of Our Lives,” have an active sex life. The show has dared to go where no soap has gone before: into the bedroom and under the sheets with a passionate pair of guys who love each other deeply. Though there’s been some outcry from conservative groups over this storyline: the show has in fact seen a considerable rise in its viewership over the past few years, up more than 200,000 in the past year alone. Actor Guy Wilson, who recently replaced the departing Chandler Massey as Will, isn’t the least bit concerned with what the “family values” crowd thinks. “I wouldn’t feel the need to say much about that,” he told SFGN. “There are many reasons why people have reservations towards this issue. Lead by example. Any way we can broaden people’s awareness. Act and speak by example.” “Days,” along with shows like “Glee” and “Modern Family,” have been credited with turning the tide of public opinion on gay relationships and marriage equality. “We won a GLAAD Media Award,” Wilson said proudly. “I’m honored and privileged to be part of a show that’s a social institution. It’s in its 48th season, and it’s still trailblazing; till making headlines. These are exciting times.” Gay characters are not new to daytime TV. As early as the 1980s, the now cancelled soaps “All My Children” and “As the World Turns” featured short-term gay characters. Film actor Ryan Philippe was first seen as Billy Douglas on “One Life to Live” in 1992 in a teen coming out story. In 2000, “All My Children” outed Bianca, the lesbian daughter of Erica Kane, the show’s long running leading lady. Though Bianca eventually went through the ups and downs of several stormy relationships, it took a few years until the AMC writers allowed her to kiss a girlfriend. That dry mouth kiss made headlines. Soon after, “As the World Turns” created Luke and Noah, daytime’s first gay super couple. By the time a scantily clad Will and Sonny, affectionately known by fans as WilSon, hopped into bed on “Days,” the audience was more than willing to join them.

“I’m not uncomfortable with the scenes at all,” Wilson said. “It never bothers me. Freddie Smith is such a connected and present actor, so it’s easy to be grounded in those moments.” Shortly before quitting the series in order to attend school, the immensely popular Chandler Massey won a Daytime Emmy Award for his work as Will. Wilson had big shoes to fill, but said he was embraced by

the cast and crew. “I thought it would be difficult, but everyone was so welcoming and gracious,” he said. “They helped me fill in the blanks and get caught up to speed.” At first the fans were apprehensive about accepting a new actor in such a beloved role. “I don’t take it personally,” Wilson said. “I look at it as the fans caring about the show and this relationship. If someone you care about leaves the show, you feel uncomfortable.” Viewers need not worry. Soon after Wilson’s debut, Sonny proposed marriage to Will. A sizzling bedroom scene followed. “First and foremost, this is a love story,” Wilson said. “They show affection and are intimate. It’s important to be truthful, to portray that love truthfully.” “Days of Our Lives” airs weekdays on NBC. Episodes also stream at NBC.com. soflagaynews //

New Documentary Chronicles Gay Civil Rights Movement in South Florida J.W. Arnold A decade after the Stonewall riots and a generation before marriage equality began to take hold in Massachusetts, the epicenter of the gay civil rights movement was right here in South Florida. A new documentary, “The Day It Snowed in Miami,” premiering on WPBT2 on Thursday, March 6, explores the battles, set off in 1977 by a groundbreaking human rights ordinance passed by the Miami-Dade county commission. At the time, opponents promised it would never pass until “hell froze over.” The next day, Jan. 19, South Florida received its first and only recorded snowfall. Independent filmmaker Joe Cardona was just a boy, but he vividly remembers the controversy the antidiscrimination bill stoked. “I was not very old, but I was old enough to know what was going on and the commotion really stuck with me,” Cardona recalled. Evangelical activist Anita Bryant, the spokesperson for the state’s citrus industry, took up the cause, rallying voters to overturn the ordinance, a victory that would hold for 21 years. But, the history doesn’t end there, as just two years later President Ronald Reagan was elected and the AIDS crisis began to take hold in South Florida. Within a decade, South Beach emerged as a leading destination for LGBT residents and tourists. In 1997, another initiative lost by just two votes, only to pass in 1998 and be affirmed by county voters in 2002. “Obviously Stonewall has its place, but we’re talking apples and oranges,” said Cardona. “The revolution was fought here. It was very heated—personal—within families.” The film project got its start two years ago, just as the marriage equality movement began to gain momentum. Cardona, who is also an op-ed columnist for the “Miami Herald,” has many close LGBT friends and colleagues, and had considered the topic after collaborating with the newspaper and WPBT2 on an Emmywinning documentary about the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake.

“It’s an amazing Miami story,” he explained, “that certainly has national ramifications. This is the civil rights movement of the day.” Because of the transient community

in South Florida, he realized many of his friends didn’t realize the historic role the region played. “There was this amazing disconnect,” Cardona said. The filmmaker turned to “Herald” LGBT beat reporter Steve Rothaus, his “walking encyclopedia, pillar of the community and producer,” as well as executive producers Shed Boren and Nancy San Martin, to get the project completed while simultaneously juggling two other films. “They are the best team in the business,” he said. The film premieres this week on a local PBS affiliate, but by summer, Cardona expects it to be picked up by other stations across the country. “It’s a story of perseverance and the struggle for equality and it resonates,” he added. “The Day It Snowed in Miami” will air Thursday, March 6 on WPBT2.
