Gay-Straight Alliance Wins Decision
1 2 3
Students fighting to have a gay-straight alliance club at their middle school in central Florida have won a partial victory for the time being. A federal judge, last week, denied an attempt to throw out the students’ lawsuit against the School Board of Lake County, just northwest of Orlando. But the judge also refused to issue a preliminary injunction that would have allowed
the club to meet immediately at Carver Middle School in Taveres, Fla. The students’ lawsuit instead will be allowed to move forward to the next phase of evidence exchange. The students sued the school board last December. It was the second lawsuit seeking to form the gay-straight alliance club at the school.
Trans Woman Suing CrossFit A transgender woman prohibited from competing in a strength competition as a female is suing the fitness company sponsoring the competition, seeking $2.5 million in damages. Chloie Jonnson, a personal trainer, charges the CrossFit company with discrimination, intentional infliction of emotional distress and unfair competition in a lawsuit filed in Santa Cruz, California. While her lawyer calls it a case of discrimination against transgender people, CrossFit’s lawyer calls
it protecting the competition. In 2013, Jonnson sought to compete in the CrossFit Games, a contest aimed at determining the fittest man and woman. According to the lawsuit, Jonnson has identified herself as a female since her teenage years and is legally recognized by California as a woman. She had sexual reassignment surgery in 2006 and has been on female hormone therapy, according to her lawsuit.

Nigerian Men Whipped for Gay Sex A human rights network says four young men convicted of having gay sex have been whipped publicly in an Islamic court in northern Nigeria. Dorothy Aken’Ova of the Coalition for the Defense of Sexual Rights Network says the men will go to jail in Lagos, Nigeria and face humiliation and beatings if rights organizations do not come up with an additional fine of 20,000 naira ($120) each meted out by a judge

Another Case of HIV Cured The first time it happened almost by accident. Just hours after delivery, a baby born with HIV in Mississippi was given high doses of three antiretroviral drugs. More than three years later, doctors say the little girl has no evidence of the life-threatening disease in her blood, despite being off medication for nearly two years. Now doctors say another child born with the virus appears to be free of HIV after receiving similar treatment. The case report was presented at the annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Boston this week. The girl was delivered at Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach, California, last summer to a mother with AIDS. Doctors gave the baby high doses of antiretroviral drugs — AZT, 3TC and Nevirapine — four hours after birth. Eleven days later, the virus was undetectable in her body and remained undetectable nine months later.

.C. Legislators Warn Against Gay Subject Matter
Some state legislators in South Carolina want to teach a lesson — to two of the state’s public universities. The legislators want to reduce funding for the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina Upstate because the schools assigned materials to students that dealt with homosexual themes. The state House of Representatives is preparing to vote this week on a budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year that would strip the College of Charleston of $52,000 and the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg of $17,162. The cuts are a fraction of the universities’ proposed state funding for next year — College of Charleston is set to receive $20 million and USC Upstate $9.5 million. But the proposed cuts, despite being small portions of the schools’ overall budgets, have drawn outrage from students, faculty, and even some alumni from both institutions. Many have taken their complaints to a website created to protest the cuts, and hundreds of individuals have posted, expressing their disapproval. “I am a gay USC Upstate faculty member and a proud CofC alumnus...and SC is my home too. I won’t stand by and let my academic freedom AND my civil rights be devalued,” one post read. The situation stems from freshman assignments at both schools. Last summer, the College of Charleston provided incoming freshmen with a memoir, “Fun Home,” in which the author deals with

coming out as a lesbian. The University of South Carolina Upstate, meanwhile, assigned “Out Loud: The Best of Rainbow Radio,” which features an account of South Carolina’s first gay and lesbian radio show. Rep. Garry Smith, a Republican from Simpsonville who proposed the cuts in the state House Ways and Means committee, says he heard of the assignments after receiving an e-mail of concern from a constituent whose 17-year-old daughter was bound for the College of Charleston.

edia Matters Launches Mythopedia
Media Matters for America, a progressive media watchdog group, unleashed a new tool in its mission to correct conservative misinformation. The Washington, D.C. organization has launched Mythopedia — a new tool for fighting back against right-wing misinformation. Mythopedia is a simple fact checker that concisely debunks persistent conservative lies. The site launched with 400 entries of common conservative myths with new fact-checks added in real time. Media Matters made this announcement ahead of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) -- an event featuring speakers with a history of launching smears, pushing wild conspiracy theories, and hyping right-wing myths. Bradley Beychok, President of Media Matters, issued the following statement about Mythopedia’s launch: “Whether it is a relative claiming that global warming can’t be real because of a snowstorm in the middle of winter or a prominent conservative writer calling soflagaynews //
The California baby is still on antiretroviral treatment, so it’s too soon to tell if the child is actually in remission. “Taking kids off antiretroviral therapy intentionally is not standard of care,” said Dr. Deborah Persaud, a virologist with Johns Hopkins Children’s Center who has been involved in both cases. “At this time, there is no plan to stop treatment.” While doctors around the world are trying to duplicate the Mississippi case, more research needs to be done before new standards are implemented for treating babies born with HIV. “This has to be done in a clinical trial setting, because really the only way we can prove that we’ve accomplished remission in these cases is by taking them off treatment, and that’s not without risks,” Persaud said during her presentation at the conference.
Barack Obama an ‘ideological Muslim,’ everyone encounters right-wing myths in everyday life. Mythopedia puts the facts about these myths at your fingertips. This tool is the next step in pushing back on conservative misinformation.” Some lies Mythopedia will combat include: being gay is a choice, gay people are worse parents than straight people and repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has undermined morale and unit cohesion in the U.S. military. hick-fil-A Reduces AntiGay Giving
Chick-fil-A, a fast food franchise known throughout the Deep South for its Christian values and anti-gay stance on civil unions, has dramatically reduced its anti-LGBT giving in the past year. Only about $25,000 in grant donations, out of the $120,000 the Chick-fil-A Foundation generated, went to the anti-LGBT Fellowship of Christian Athletes. It is more than a 99.2 percent reduction compared to the previous year. Chick-fil-A nearly doubled its anti-LGBT giving between 2010 and 2011, where the foundation went from $1.9 million in grants to anti-LGBT groups, like the Marriage and Family Foundation, to more than $3.6 million. When the foundation filed the proper forms for 2012 for tax documents for nonprofit organizations, it showed that neither organization in 2012 received any grant money.
SouthFloridaGayNews
Chick-fil-A’s president Dan Cathy, a staunch Southern Baptist, in 2012 commented how the company was “guilty as charged” about advocating toward a Christian view of marriage and family, along with the increase and overall grant donations toward anti-LGBT organizations. Cathy’s statements resulted in a surge in demand for the company’s chicken sandwiches during the summer of 2012 as religious right wingers flocked to Chick-fil-As to demonstrate their support for its president’s stance. Two years later, the scaled back efforts of Chick-fil-A’s grant donations also carried over to its other nonprofits; donations were given also to the United Negro College Fund, Habitat for Humanity and a couple of others. Headquartered in College Park, Ga., in the suburbs of Atlanta, Chick-fil-A has locations in 38 U.S. states and is aiming for expansion globally in the Philippines, South Korea and Alberta, Canada.

Southies React to Parade Flap
Negotiations continue for gay group’s inclusion John McDonald jeanmichelmcdonald@gmail.com
Jack Reid and Larry Turner live comfortably in their Wilton Manors home. They left South Boston after 65 years because of intolerance. “We were driven out,” said Reid as he discussed his relocation to Florida. The couple saw first hand the appalling treatment of gay men in the streets of South Boston. A longtime enclave of Irish, Italian and, more recently, Lithuanian and Albanian immigrants, “Southie” is in the news again as the neighborhood’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade approaches. Reid, 81, a first generation Irish American with dual citizenship, recalled the last time gays and lesbians marched in the parade, which celebrates Irish pride and culture. “People threw bottles at them and called them ‘faggots,’ Reid said. “That’s when I knew we had to get out of there. I wanted to shoot them.” Reid and his longtime partner settled in South Florida, but have not forgotten their roots. They commend Boston mayor Martin Walsh for his willingness to work a deal with parade organizers to allow a gay veteran group to participate, but wonder if it’s safe. One of those organizers, John “Wacko”

Hurley said the LGBT group, MassEquality is not welcome because, “they got an agenda we don’t want.” Hurley went on to tell the Boston Herald, “They got their own parade in June.” The South Boston controversy dates to early 1990s and reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which handed parade organizers a landmark victory. The court ruled that although the parade was on public streets, it was a privately organized event protected by the First Amendment right to freedom of speech. The government could not interfere to prevent organizers from prohibiting gays and lesbians or any other group. While acceptance of LGBT people has progressively improved over the years, Reid looks back on his time in Southie with some regrets. “We survived,” Reid said. “But we couldn’t be ourselves. We had to hide who we were. We couldn’t be real.”

FAMU Adds LGBT Protections
Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University has added sexual orientation and gender identity to the university’s nondiscrimination policy. The Tallahassee school, one of the largest of the country’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities, passed the measure at its board of trustees meeting last week. It is now in a 30-day review period before adoption. Equality Florida CEO Nadine Smith hailed the news as a breakthrough. “These protections send a clear message that the university is a place where all are welcome to learn and excel in a safe environment, without fear of discrimination,” Smith said.
Curtis Producing Film About First Gay Baseball Player
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis is working on a film featuring the story of the first gay Major League Baseball player. Titled “Out At Home: The Glenn Burke Story,” Curtis’ biopic is based on the memoir of the same name written by Burke and Erik Sherman. Burke played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics during the late 1970s. He revealed his sexuality during an interview with Bryant Gumbel on NBC’s Today Show in 1982. The memoir was published in 1995, the same year Burke died of AIDS complications. Currently there is no known openly gay Major League Baseball player.
Arizona Lawmaker Comes Out
A veteran Arizona lawmaker who was a vocal critic of a bill that touched off a national debate over discrimination came out as gay, saying “I wanted to let everyone know I am gay, I’m a Latino and I’m a state senator and it’s OK.” State Sen. Steve Gallardo (D-Phoenix), 45, said he felt the need to come out publicly partly because of the recent battle against a bill approved by the Arizona Legislature that would have allowed businesses to refuse service to gays based on religious beliefs. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer ultimately vetoed the bill.
Leto’s Character Draws Backlash
Not everyone was enamored with actor Jared Leto’s character, Raydon, a transgender woman, in the film “Dallas Buyers Club.” Leto, 42, won an Academy Award for his performance, but Cristan Williams, editor of TransAdvocate.com, said his superb acting abilities are not the issue. “Leto’s character is yet another sensationalistic composite of the trans experience,” Williams said. “Trans people are almost never allowed to portray trans characters even though it’s been shown through the work of Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) and Harmony Santana (Gun Hill Road) that we are more than capable.”

Dalai Lama Comes Out For Marriage Equality Buddhist spiritual leader also condemns bullying Associated Press The Dalai Lama has thrown his moral weight behind gay marriage, condemning homophobia and saying he was not bothered by consensual sex among people from other traditions. In an interview released during his latest trip to the United States, the celibate Buddhist monk said gay marriage was up to each government and ultimately “individual business.” “If two people — a couple — really feel that way is more practical, more sort of satisfaction, both sides fully agree, then okay,” the Dalai Lama told an online talk show by veteran radio and television host Larry King. The Dalai Lama drew a distinction between public policy and individual morals, saying that people should still follow their own religions’ rules on sexuality. “But then for a nonbeliever, that is up to them. So there are different forms of sex - so long (as it is) safe, okay, and (if both people) fully agree, okay,” the Dalai Lama said. “Bully, abuse – that’s totally wrong. That’s a violation of human rights,” he said. The Dalai Lama is Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader and one of the most

prominent leaders in Buddhism. Gay marriage has won growing acceptance in the Western world and Latin America. No predominantly Buddhist nation allows gay marriage, although several nations with Buddhist influence including Nepal, Taiwan and Vietnam have increasingly debated the issue. The Dalai Lama, who fled his Chinese-ruled homeland for India in 1959 and later won the Nobel Peace Prize, has prided himself on progressive positions and described himself as a feminist. But his past comments on gay rights have occasionally bothered some of his Western audiences. In one of his books, the Dalai Lama, while not explicitly criticising homosexuality, said that sex should only involve “organs intended for sexual intercourse.” The Dalai Lama, who enjoys wide support in the United States, met yesterday with leaders of Congress. President Barack Obama welcomed him to the White House on February 21 in a meeting condemned by China, which opposes the monk’s international activities.

Tony Ramos Loses Battle With Cancer Art Greenwald

%
If a special place in heaven exists for LGBT activists, Tony Ramos deserves a seat at the head table. Ramos, who fought vigorously for equality, justice and fairness as President of South Florida GUARD (Gays United to Attack Repression and Discrimination) from 1996 to 2003, lost his battle with lung cancer and died March 3. He was 47. His activism began at 15 in the Bronx in New York City. Ramos also helped create Asbury Park’s (New Jersey) LGBT community center and organized the region’s first pride parade. After moving to South Florida in 1994 Ramos became involved with GUARD, which was originally formed in reaction to the rise in hate crimes, attacks and discrimination directed toward LGBT people. Ramos also carried out protests against Reverend James Kennedy and his Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, the Christian Coalition, and the Rev. Fred Phelps and Westboro Baptist Church. After a police raid on the bar Chaps for backroom sex, Ramos met with high ranking Wilton Manors and FLPD officials with concerns that the LGBT community was being unfairly targeted, which led to an investigation by GUARD and resulted in less hostile interactions, more transparency and accountability of police agencies. While GUARD president, Ramos astutely forged strong bonds with all the area PD’s, resulting in a mutual admiration society of sorts. Most of the officers he knew on a first name basis and would often ride alongside them in their patrol cars. Ramos won them over with his genuine respect for law enforcement along with his genteel nature and disarming smile.

During the final year of his presidency and for three years thereafter, Ramos took over as head of security at the Ramrod Bar in Fort Lauderdale, and according to owners Zak Enterline and Steve Whitney, he was a “model employee.” “Tony was a take charge-guy,” Enterline noted. “He never bothered us about anything, always handled things professionally and never got upset.” In 2004, Ramos retired from public life, but remained highly visible and vocal, taking on individual cases involving injustice as needed. Besides his involvement in GUARD, Ramos was cofounder, past president and co-chairman of Pride of Greater Fort Lauderdale and co-founder of the summer Stonewall Street festival in 2000. He also played a key role at the Marie Wansiki Foundation as director of public relations and development. Founded in 1989, the clinic provided testing, treatment and counseling for thousands of people with HIV/ AIDS and without adequate resources. Apart from his devotion to LGBT causes, he leaves behind his partner, Dennis Shroeder, of 13 years. The two married on January 31, 2014. “We finally made it ‘official’ by taking a road trip to Maryland with my parents,” Shroeder proudly announced on Facebook. “This was one of the highlights of the past few months for Tony!” A memorial will be held Friday, March 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the main auditorium at The Pride Center located at 2040 N Dixie Hwy, Wilton Manors, FL 33305. advertorial Financial Focus: How Will Social Security Fit into Your Retirement Income Strategy? Darcy Beeman
Have you given much thought to collecting Social Security? The answer probably depends on how old you are — but whatever your age, you’ll want to consider the best way of incorporating Social Security benefits into your retirement income strategy. Of course, if you have several decades to go until you retire, you might be wondering if Social Security will even be there for you at all. The basic issue is that the Social Security system is experiencing a sharply declining worker-to-beneficiary ratio. In plain English, this means that fewer workers are contributing to Social Security while the huge baby boom generation is retiring and taking money out. Still, Social Security has enough money to pay full retirement benefits to every eligible American until 2038, according to the Congressional Budget Office. After that point, benefits would have to be reduced unless changes are made to the Social Security system. And several changes have indeed been proposed. Given that we do have nearly 25 years until benefit cuts may need to be made, it seems reasonable that some type of solution could be reached to put Social Security back on solid ground. In any case, when thinking about your retirement income, you need to focus on those things that you can control — such as when to start taking Social Security and how you can supplement your Social Security benefits. Depending on when you were born, your “full” retirement age, as far as collecting Social Security benefits, is likely either 66 or 67. You can start getting your checks as early as 62, but if you do, your monthly payments could be reduced by as much as 30% — and this reduction is permanent. Consequently, if you can support your lifestyle from other
sources of income — such as earnings from employment and withdrawals from your IRA and 401(k) — you may want to postpone taking Social Security until you reach your full retirement age. In fact, you can get even bigger monthly checks if you delay taking your benefits beyond your full retirement age, although your payments will “max out” once you reach 70. Keep in mind, though, that other factors, such as your anticipated longevity, should also enter into your calculations in considering when to take Social Security. As mentioned above, your retirement income may also include withdrawals from retirement accounts, such as an IRA and a 401(k), along with other investments, such as a fixed annuity. And these other accounts are quite important, because Social Security provides, on average, only about 40% of retirement income for the average 65-yearold today. Consequently, in the years and decades before you retire, contribute as much as you can possibly afford to these other accounts. Given the advances in medical care and the greater awareness of healthy lifestyles, people are living longer than ever — which means you could spend two, or even three, decades in retirement. To enjoy those years fully, you’ll need adequate income. By planning ahead, you can determine how best to fit Social Security into your retirement income strategy. Every move you make to help “secure” your retirement can pay off for you in the long run. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. •

Tell Mom the Gay Community Has Some New Friends Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
A week from today, I will be co-hosting a cocktail party for gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist at the home of Fort Lauderdale city commissioner Dean Trantalis. This is creating some waves in the LGBT community, with a number of community leaders asking how I can support today someone who has fought us for so long. They are legitimate inquiries, and I will answer them here. Very simply, if someone is late to your birthday party, it’s still polite to welcome them in. As Governor, Charlie Christ clearly supported the ban on same sex marriages and steadfastly opposed allowing gays to adopt children. He was wrong, and he set us back. There is no denying that. There is also no denying that a multitude of politicians have taken time to evolve on a variety of social issues, from gay rights to medical marijuana. This team of slow-tojoin-the-crowd players include everyone from Bill Clinton to Barack Obama. What was, was. All we can and should do today is say ‘thank you for coming around,’ and ‘welcome to the party.’ Governor, we appreciate your apology, and accept your support. It took the Dalai Lama awhile to get to the right place in history as well. Last week, himself an exile for the past 50 years, the international spiritual leader from Tibet embraced gay marriage. Since no predominantly Buddhist nation allows gay marriage, the Dalai Lama’s recognition of the same is important for millions of his spiritual followers, not only here in the United States, but throughout the world. As important as political advances are, and as good as some court rulings have been for the LGBT community, nothing is more important than winning the hearts and minds of our family and friends. Nothing advances that cause more than when national and world leaders, who have historically been silent, embrace our agenda as legitimate and worthy. To the Dalai Lama then, let’s not lambast where he was. Let’s just say thank you for the place he arrived at today.
Last week, the Jewish National Fund, one of the most important organizations in the founding of the modern State of Israel and a very conservative organization, announced that it would be hosting its first ever mission to Israel for the LGBT community. Shocked would be one way to describe this, but simply appreciative would be a wiser and better reaction. It’s just one more group being more expansive in their breadth. They are reaching out to us. Let’s just say thank you for getting there. One more guy has helped us out a lot this past year, without passing any laws. It’s some senior citizen from the Vatican we all call the Pope. Simply by being non judgmental, and embracing the right of homosexuals to live our lives homosexually, Pope Francis has made the bridge wider. He is quietly saying there is room for everyone within the circle. The pope is sending out a subliminal message of unprecedented universal tolerance. In tone and substance, his words “Who am I to judge” last March, referencing gays in the Catholic Church, were the most powerful comments ever spoken by a pontiff to the LGBT community, anytime, anywhere. In the last 24 hours, there has even been a discussion suggesting the Vatican could support gay civil unions in the future. New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan said that the pontiff wants the Catholic Church to study same-sex unions, ‘rather than condemn them.’ That’s stunning in itself. Instead of censure, concern. Wow. That is one powerful message to send to the one billion Roman Catholics on this Earth. Next Wednesday, one of my co-hosts at the party for Charlie Crist, will be my business partner at SFGN, Pier Guidugli.
Sunshine Cathedral Hosting Lorna Luft
Fresh off hosting an outstanding performance by the Yale Whiffenpoofs, Sunshine Cathedral welcomes actress/singer Lorna Luft to Fort Lauderdale. Luft, daughter of the late Hollywood icon Judy Garland, joins actor Scott Nevins for the April 26 engagement. Sunshine Cathedral was full of glee last Saturday night with the Whiffenpoofs in town. An undergraduate a cappella group at Yale University, the Whiffenpoofs delighted audience members with inspiring renditions of “Operator,” “Landslide,” and “Skinny Love” among other peppy numbers interspersed with cleverly delivered comedic bits. Tickets are now on sale for Luft and Nevins with prices ranging $30-$50. For more information, visit www.sunshinecathedral.org

I call him the bitchy Italian. But I confess. He called it correctly. He was ahead of the curve. He wanted me to put Pope Francis on our cover last October. We would have been the first LGBT publication to do so. Advocate Magazine beat us to it in December. Instead of Pope Francis, I put Charlie Crist on the cover, noting that he was not only now supportive of gay marriage, but regrets having supported the constitutional amendment banning them. Crist was not only the first Republican governor to have ever addressed the NAACP, he now as a Democratic candidate endorses the medical marijuana amendment. Today, he also supports many gay issues. So join with me next Wednesday at Commissioner Dean Trantalis’s home, and welcome him as a new friend. After all, who are we to judge?

Lesbian Stays Alive on American Idol
M.K. Nobilette, the lesbian singer on ‘American Idol’ remained in the hunt this week after staving off elimination yet again and igniting a firestorm on Twitter. During the show’s “Take us Back Home” episode, Nobilette shared her story of being raised in San Francisco by two lesbians, who have since separated and have new girlfriends. Her revelations prompted tweets critical of her lifestyle and doubts about being “born gay.” She also received supportive tweets, encouraging her to pursue her dream of being a professional singer/songwriter. Nobilette, 20, returns to the 13th season of American Idol Wednesday and Thursday. The show airs on Fox.

letters to the editor Jews Lead Nation Accepting Gay Marriage Rabbi Allen S. Maller The Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) released (2/26/14) a new study of a decade of changes in attitudes on LGBTrelated issues which revealed a 21-point jump in support for same-sex marriage from 2003, when one-third (32 percent) of Americans supported gay marriage, to 2013, when a majority (53 percent) of Americans did. The PRRI study, “A Shifting Landscape: A Decade of Change in American Attitudes about Same-Sex Marriage and LGBT Issues found that of all the identified religious groups in the poll, Jews are more supportive of marriage equality than any other religious group. Thus, 83 percent of Jews favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally compared to 73 percent of those with no religious affiliation, 62 percent of white mainline Protestants, 57 percent of Catholics, 46 percent of Hispanic Protestants, 35 percent of Black Protestants and 27 percent of white evangelical Protestants. Moreover, 58 percent of Jews strongly favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry (a full 22 points higher than the next highest category, the religiously unaffiliated).
Amazingly, Jews are only 3 points behind LGBT Americans in their own support of marriage equality (86 percent). Even more amazingly, only a quarter of Americans believe Jews are friendly toward LGBT people, a third believe we are unfriendly and 41 percent do not know or refused to answer the question. Jews are perceived by non-Jews to be only 1 point friendlier than evangelical Christian churches and 6 points less friendly than African-American churches; when in reality Jews are much more friendly than those two groups. The size of the gap between Jewish support for gays and these two church groups is a giant 56 points when compared to evangelical Christian churches and 48 points compared to African-American churches. The Union of Reform Jews was the first national religious organization in the U. S. to accept LGBT congregations as equal members. This may be the reason that all LGBT Synagogues and Temples in North America have so many non-Jewish members. Visit RabbiMaller.com for more info on Rabbi Maller.

Medical Marijuana is Coming to Florida FCC420.com
Norm Kent, the past President of the Board of Directors of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), has opened up a new medical marijuana consulting firm in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Florida Cannabis Consultants will be doing business as FCC420.com. “Frankly,” said Kent, “with a constitutional amendment on the ballot to approve marijuana wellness centers here in the Sunshine State, entrepreneurs, growers, and venture capitalists are going to need guidance and direction. I am being swamped with calls and I needed to set up a vehicle to respond professionally.” Few people in the industry can bring to the table the breadth and depth of experience that Kent can, having first worked with NORML four decades ago when he was a student and “toker,” he acknowledges, at Hofstra University. Kent sarcastically notes that “yes, marijuana was a gateway drug. It led to a higher education, law school and a lifetime of fighting for social reforms.” “Today,” Kent notes, “my youthful indiscretion has become a a professional crusade.” In Florida, it’s on the verge of coming to fruition. Early polling suggests nearly 72 percent of Florida citizens support medical marijuana. For the amendment to prevail, 60 percent of the voters must approve the initiative. Kent states that his consulting firm, formed with his law partner, Russell Cormican, “will guide clients through the emerging rules and regulations for Florida wellness centers.” Kent, who has become somewhat of a regular on national TV defending cannabis consumers on the Nancy Grace show, indicates that his new consulting firm “will provide up to date and cutting edge advisories warning ‘cannabiznesses’ of the pitfalls and problems which may occur as they seek to invest their monies and open their doors.” Importantly, Kent warns that you can’t start to “grow now and assert a medical defense tomorrow. The amendment has to pass first.” He adds “you can prepare but you can’t plant.” In 1982, as a young attorney, Kent once sued the state of Florida to prevent it from spraying the deadly herbicide paraquat on
marijuana fields growing in the state. Today his goal is to help the state craft reasonable rules and regulations for the dispensaries and wellness centers which will open when and if the amendment passes. “No one is better equipped to do so,” says his business partner, Russell Cormican. “As the chair of NORML, Norm has criss-crossed the country as a medicinal marijuana advocate, lecturing in colleges, legal conferences, and advising legislators. He is a legitimate expert.” Kent served as vice chair and then chair of NORML from 2012-2014, and has served on their Board of Directors since 1996. It was Kent who pioneered medical necessity defenses for cannabis consumers in Florida as far back as 1988. One of his clients, Elvy Mussika, is one of only four living Americans who have cannabis grown and delivered to them monthly by the federal government. A criminal defense attorney in South Florida for 35 years, since 1979, Kent also successfully represented patients and caregivers of the Key West Cannabis Buyers Clubs in the early 1990’s. “The public is tired of prohibition. It seeks access to medicinal marijuana. I hope to help craft the rules so it happens fairly,” Kent stated, adding “I also want to insure that consumers and investors do not become victims of flim-flam artists and fly-by-night con artists. At FCC420.com, we will be like a third base coach, letting players know where the scoring opportunities are.” FCC420.com will be providing its clients with online weekly updates and advisories through its password-protected website. • soflagaynews //

Bursting through a crowded field of heterosexual self-help books comes “Sex Happens: The Gay Man’s Guide to Creative Intimacy.” There are no Venuses or Mars to deal with here — “Sex Happens” is an honest, candid guide for gay couples and single men looking to get out of a sexual rut or pattern of failed intimacy. By exploring important aspects of self-awareness, what arouses desire and how men communicate with each other, “Sex Happens” helps gay men get the sex they want by being honest and attentive with their partners. “Sex Happens” delves headfirst into overcoming intimacy barriers and social obstacles unique to gay couples, helping them find the passion they’re missing. “Sex Happens” doesn’t shy away from the hard questions, like whether a monogamous relationship is best, how to deal with sexual incompatibility, what sparks desire for both partners, and how sexual passion in a relationship has evolved or dissolved over time. Through dialogues, scenarios and sexual exercises, “Sex Happens” guides gay men looking to revive their intimate lives by encouraging honest, insightful conversations between partners. Perfect for a couple to read and discuss together, each segment concludes with helpful discussion questions, relationship exercises, and dialogue guidelines. Great for therapists too, who work with gay male couples, providing step-by-step techniques for helping men resolve sexual and emotional blocks to intimacy. Arlen Keith Leight, M.S.W, Ph.D. is a Diplomate of the American Board of Sexology, a board certified clinical sexologist, and licensed psychotherapist. He holds a B.A. in psychology from The Johns Hopkins University, an M.S.W. from The Catholic University of America, a Ph.D. from Maimonides University, and a Certificate in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from The American University. It’s Lent, that 40-day-long Christian season of penitence and introspection leading up to the Easter holiday. On Fridays, you may choose to eat fish, but Monday is a great day to brush up on the particulars of the passion story. Check out “Son of God,” the feature film culled from the wildly successful cable television miniseries, “The Bible,” which broke records last year. While we know how this story ends, hunky Diogo Morgado (Jesus) is certainly inspiring (and easy on the eyes) as the Messiah. For show times and theaters, check local listings.

Vivacious and I had an instant connection. I have mad love for that one. Ummm... obviously Gia and I did not become friends. I don’t trust any queen that can’t look me in the eye. Or...maybe she was looking me in the eye. Hard to tell. Anything you would do differently?
Yeah-use a glue gun instead of trying to sew. I thought I would get props for actually using a sewing machine since it was a “sewing challenge.” I didn’t realize it was called a “glue gun challenge.”

I’m actually happy to be the second one gone. They say, the first is the worst, the second is the best! Besides, I can mention every single queen voted off of every season first or second, as well as the Top 3. The queens in the middle always end up getting forgotten.

Do you think you came across harsh during the runway critique?
I have a confession; I actually did not watch the episode where I was told to “sashay away.” I probably won’t ever watch it actually. From what I understand, everything that the editors portrayed me as saying, I actually did say. I think I’m happy that I at least will be remembered for being on the show. I may not be remembered for the right reasons, but I certainly will be remembered. Why not watch?
To be honest, I’m really not comfortable watching myself on television. I like to be in charge of my own editing and don’t really like being portrayed on television unless it’s really my choice. What were your favorite and least favorite parts?
My favorite part of the show was definitely meeting all of the other girls. Every one of them is so talented and I am lucky to be a part of what we all do for a living, as well as the show. My least favorite part — everything else.
That may answer my next question; would you do the show again?
I’ll just say this; my biggest regret is not keeping my runway dress. I actually threw it away! I should have just kept it and sold it on eBay! What’s next for you?
Well, I have a YouTube channel that I am very proud of, you can find it under “Magnoliaisme” on YouTube. I am trying to do a lot of work on that and put up lots of content, silly videos, things like that. I’m also working on a project with (recording artist) Adam Barta, and I’m really excited for that also. I really appreciate you speaking with me as well; thanks so much for not blacklisting me after my episode!

Some of Italy’s most famous cheeses, such as Pecorino, are believed to have roots dating back over 2,000 years. While tracing any cheese’s exact history can be difficult, of one thing there is no doubt: Italy has a passion for cheese and an ability to create world-class cheeses that are loved and eaten around the world. The ancient Romans were dedicated cheese makers and eaters. Many Roman homes had a special kitchen set aside that was used only for cheese making. The finished cheeses could also be stored and aged there. Some of these early cheeses would be smoked over apple wood chips, yielding a product that is still found today: smoked provolone. Parmigiano Reggiano — Parmesan in English — is widely known as the king of Italian cheeses. Writers of the past such as Boccaccio in “The Decameron” and Samuel Pepys in his London diary have waxed poetic about the joys of Parmesan cheese. If you have ever eaten real Parmigiano, which bears a distinctive seal and stamp on its rind, you know that it tastes nothing like the ubiquitous grated Parmesan in a cylindrical cardboard box. Each region of Italy is known for producing different styles and types of cheese. Lombardy, for example, is best known for its Provolone, Taleggio, and Grana Padano. Perhaps its most famous cheese, however, is Gorgonzola. This cheese derives its

distinctive flavor from the blue mold veins that are allowed to develop in the cheese. It is believed to have originated in the ninth or tenth century and was named after a town in the region. It comes in two varieties: A younger variety called “dolce” or sweet and a drier, older variety that is crumbly and is frequently used on salads and in cooking. From the Apennine Mountain region of Italy comes a cheese called Caciocavallo. This is a stretched curd cheese that can be made from either sheep’s or cow’s milk. The finished cheese is shaped like a teardrop, and its flavor to a Southern Italian Provolone with a hard, edible rind. This is one of the Italian cheeses with a protected geographical status in the Southern Apennine Provinces of Italy. This dictates which types of animals can be used to make Caciocavalla and how the cheese is aged and stored. From the much-loved Tuscany region of Italy comes the much-loved Pecorino Toscano. A firm-textured ewe’s milk cheese, it also enjoys protected geographical status. Pecorino Toscano is the third largest cheese produced in Italy. Aged in flattened spheres, this cheese has a wide array of uses depending upon its age. Young Pecorino is delicious on salads, while a more mature Pecorino pairs well with honey, figs, and pears. In it is most mature stage and as the nutty flavor deepens, it is often grated over soups, stews, and pasta dishes much like Parmesan. The Italian cheese world offers so many possibilities for delicious cheese sampling. See what we have on our menu in Italian cheeses the nest time you stop in at the Naked Grape.

‘Which Way Out – Personal Thoughts Made Public’ Andrea Richard
When did you come out of the closet? A new art show examines the secret struggles LGBT people often deal with. “Which Way Out – Personal Thoughts Made Public,” opening on Fri., Feb. 21 at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines features seven artists – Nestor Arenas, Randy Burman, Jacqueline Gopie, Donna Haynes, Philip Ross Munro, Lori Nozick and Sara Stites with each artist reflecting the show’s given theme. “We all have something that we choose to share or keep private,” said Jill Slaughter, the show’s curator. Accompanying the seven artists’ works, students from the Gay-Straight Alliance group at Pembroke Pines Charter High School will contribute written pieces – poems, short stories— and artwork to “Which Way Out.” Judy Oltmans leads the Gay-Straight Alliance group at the school. The teens meet on Mondays after school to work on projects and attend discussions. She says the main idea of the group is to provide students with a safe place to get together and socialize. She admits the group is small but makes a big impact on the students’ lives. She says students are comforted knowing the club exists on campus, even though many don’t attend. For the art show, the students also worked on a photo booth. “We have designed the inside of the photo booth with road signs,” said Oltmans. “One is painted in green and looks like a highway road sign that says: ‘Follow your heart, Next exit.’” “Another one is like a big, red stop sign that instead of saying ‘stop’ it says ‘voice.’ And underneath it is says: Use your voice to speak your mind,” she said. At the show’s opening students will sing and attendees can take photos in the booth for a $3 suggested donation. Proceeds will benefit the GayStraight Alliance. “The LGBT community is often faced with the decision on whether they want to go public or not. In the gay, youth community, if they don’t share their orientation incidents of mental health risks rise,” said Slaughter. Slaughter says typically LGBT teens have a higher incident of suicide. The Gay-Straight Alliance at the Pembroke Pines Charter High School will participate in Day Of Silence on April 11, 2014. Students remain silent all day to honor LGBT related suicides. Artist Lori Nozick constructed an interactive sculpture, titled Secret House. The piece is 6-by-4-feet with a point of entry on the side. The public is invited to write secrets and drop them into the house

made of transparent materials. The house indicates a sense of privacy and as it is filled with secrets, viewers will see that secretive information will come out. Jacqueline Gopie, a Jamaican painter, remembers before she came out. She rendered this memory into a self-portrait painting.
Randy Burman, a married Miamian, reflects on the sense of isolation in his installation, Discrimination Seating. He covered one chair in vibrant yarn, a yarn bombing technique and confined within a barbed-wire enclosure. The rest are 20, standard gray metal folding chairs set up in four rows of five chairs each. He left those bare creating a stark juxtaposition.
He takes the literal approach in his Family Portraits. A series of framed family photos sit on a mantle and each picture has one or more of the member’s faces obscured. “Which Way Out – Personal Thoughts Made Public” is on display through April 3, 2014, at Studio 18, 1101 Poinciana Drive, Pembroke Pines. New McKeever Play is Classic Hollywood Whodunnit J.W. Arnold
Real life events inspired the new “dark comedy about bright stars” from local gay playwright Michael McKeever, opening March 20 at the Carnival Theatre at Miami’s Arsht Center. Set at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, one of Tinseltown’s glitziest awards season events, “Clark Gable Slept Here,” the latest production from Zoetic Stage, revels in the shallow realities of the film industry after a dead male prostitute is discovered in the hotel room of one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. “It’s a very, very dark comedy,” promises McKeever, winner of multiple regional Carbonell Awards for his plays, who based the story on the real life experiences of a friend who lives in Los Angeles. McKeever’s friend was propositioned in a gym sauna by one of “those actors” who frequently find their names published in the tabloids. “He told me how star struck he was at first — no names — but, within a few minutes, my friend was like, ‘Get this gross old man off me’!” McKeever explained. “I was simply in stitches as I heard the story and I knew I had the makings of a fun play, the story of movie stars who lead complete double lives.” Initially, McKeever considered telling the story as a drama, but “it was just too ripe with funny stuff.” He settled on the Golden Globes Awards as the setting, rather than the Oscars, because the event is held at the Chateau Marmont and is much less of a media spectacle and more of a party. The play got its title from the “great Hollywood legend” about Clark Gable being gay for pay in the 1920s. The play was actually programmed for Zoetic’s 2013-14 season before McKeever struck the first keys on his computer. Stuart Meltzer, Zoetic’s artistic director and McKeever’s longtime partner, needed a comedy to round out the season for the company, which Meltzer, McKeever and playwright Christopher Demos-Brown co-founded three years ago. “Stuart was going crazy to find a comedy…. Luckily, I’m a quick writer,” chuckled the talented McKeever. He has completed full length plays in as little as one month in the past, but managed to beat his self-imposed, two-month deadline for “Clark Gable” by a day, wrapping up the manuscript on New Year’s Eve. The play then went into workshops with cast under Meltzer’s direction. McKeever and his Zoetic colleagues had a deep pool of local talent to choose from when casting the show. “We’ve always strived to use some of the best actors in South Florida, but they’re also our friends and we know they’re going to deliver,” he said.
Chemistry between the actors is particularly important in comedy, McKeever notes. “Comedy is so much harder than drama. Timing is everything, coordinating with the other actors, but also with the audience, as well. We all have to gauge each of the comic moments, knowing where to hold (for
laughter),” he said. “And, of course, you don’t know what to really expect until you get it on stage with an audience, especially with a world premiere that’s never been performed.” Two-time Carbonell winning actress Lela Elam plays Morgan Wright, the “fixer,” who must dispose of the body. McKeever originally envisioned Morgan as a male role, but instead decided to make her a stunning, Angelina Jolietype. Clay Cartland, who McKeever calls one of the best physical actors in the area, “can bend his body in ways that aren’t human,” and offers comic relief as Gage Holland, the actor in question. McKeever himself dons a tuxedo to portray the film actor’s manager, “Hilly” Hilliard, a welcome change after portraying a shaved concentration camp inmate last fall in a Carbonell-nominated performance with Island City Stage. McKeever can’t forget Robert Johnson, the dead body previously known as the hustler, Travis. “Not only is (Robert) a joy to work with, he looks great naked. He’s portraying a $1,000 dollar a night prostitute, so that’s a prerequisite,” McKeever said. So far, they’re getting it right: “The stage manager has had her hands full keeping us on task because we’re constantly cracking each other up.” “Clark Gable Slept Here” by Michael McKeever Zoetic Stage at the Arsht Center, Miami Thursday – Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, 4 p.m. Tickets $45 at ArshtCenter.org soflagaynews //
