Mozilla Co-Founder Leaves Company Over Support of Gay Marriage Ban Brendan Eich has relinquished his title of Chief Executive Officer of Mozilla and is leaving the company following protests over his support of a gay marriage ban in California. The nonprofit, which makes the Firefox browser, infuriated many employees and users last week by naming Eich head of the Mountain View, Calif.-based organization.
1
At issue was Eich’s $1,000 donation in 2008 to the campaign to pass California’s Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that outlawed same-sex marriages. The ban was overturned last year when the U.S. Supreme Court left in place a lower-court ruling striking down the ballot measure.
Sex Offender Tried to Burn Trailer Because He Despises Lesbian Couple Miami-Dade police charged a 73-year-old man with attempted second-degree murder, arson and a hate crime after he admitted he “despised” the lesbian couple living near him in a trailer park near Hialeah. episode and police say they have video of Valenzuela-Villanueva lighting a mattress on fire that was leaning against the women’s trailer. In an arrest affidavit, ValenzuelaVillanueva states “every time he saw them kissing he felt a deep repugnance and in his opinion, they did not deserve children.”

Tom Daley: “I’m a gay man now.”
British diving phenom Tom Daley says he is a gay man now and his relationship with American screenwriter Dustin Lance Black is “all good.” Daley, 19, came out as bisexual five months ago, saying he still fancied girls. He now appears to be completely devoted to Black, 39, best known for penning an Academy Award winning script for “Milk” in 2008. Daley became one of poster boys for the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he won a bronze medal at the Games in London.

High Court Won’t Hear Photog’s ‘Freedom to Discriminate’ Case John McDonald
jeanmichelmcdonald@gmail.com
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case in which operators of a New Mexico photography business claimed its refusal to photograph a same-sex wedding was part of its free exercise of religion and therefore not subject to state antidiscrimination law. Without comment Monday, the justices listed the case, Elane Photography v. Willock, as one they will not consider. Elane Photography violated New Mexico’s anti-discrimination law by declining to photograph the wedding of Vanessa Willock and Misti Collinsworth in 2006. The photography business then filed a lawsuit claiming its refusal was protected under the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of religious freedom under the First Amendment. The New Mexico Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that Elane Photography had to obey the state’s Human Rights Act because the business constituted a public accommodation. The photo studio then turned to the U.S. Supreme
Court, resulting in today’s decision. With the advancement of marriage equality also comes businesses citing religion as a reason not to serve same-sex couples. Some states are considering laws that would allow businesses and individuals to discriminate on this basis. If the Supreme Court had heard the Elane Photography case, one outcome could be the court deciding that businesses nationwide could use religious freedom as cover for discrimination. The Human Rights Campaign issued a statement praising the high court’s decision. “The Supreme Court of the United States today has paved the way for robust enforcement of nondiscrimination laws,” said HRC legal director Sarah Warbelow. “When businesses open their doors to the public, they must abide by the law and not expect special treatment based on personal beliefs.”

Mississippi Gov. Signs ‘Religious Freedom’ Bill Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant signed a bill last week that supporters say will assure unfettered practice of religion without government interference, but that opponents worry could lead to state-sanctioned discrimination against gays and lesbians. The bill, called the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act, will become law July 1. It also adds “In God We Trust” to the state seal. An early version of the bill, considered weeks ago, was similar to one Arizona’s governor, Jan Brewer, vetoed after business groups said it could hurt that state’s economy. Supporters say

ay Men Debate Truvada Use
It’s the Truvada conundrum: A drug hailed as a lifesaver for many people infected by HIV is at the heart of a rancorous debate among gay men, AIDS activists and health professionals over its potential for protecting uninfected men who engage in gay sex without using condoms. Many doctors and activists see immense promise for such preventive use of Truvada, and are campaigning hard to raise awareness of it as a crucial step toward reducing new HIV infections, which now total about 50,000 a year in the U.S. Recent efforts range from thinktank forums and informational websites to a festive event at a New York City bar featuring popular drag queens. Yet others — despite mounting evidence of Truvada’s effectiveness — say such efforts are reckless, tempting some condom users to abandon that layer of protection and exposing them to an array of other sexually transmitted infections aside from HIV. “If something comes along that’s better than condoms, I’m all for it, but Truvada is not that,” said Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “Let’s be honest: It’s a party drug.” Even as gay-rights organizations celebrate collective progress in the fight to legalize samesex marriage, the less-publicized Truvada debate has fueled bitter divisions within the gay community. Some who use the drug say they’ve felt shamed by some who don’t, and there’s now a lively backlash by users and their allies. Truvada, produced by California-based Gilead Sciences, has been around for a decade, serving as one of the key drugs used in combination with others as the basic treatment for people who have the AIDScausing virus HIV. However, the drug took on a more contentious aspect in 2012 when the Food and Drug Administration approved it for

the final Mississippi bill bears little resemblance to the failed Arizona measure. Outside the state Capitol, more than 75 gayrights supporters protested against the bill. Jeff White of Waveland, a founder of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lesbian and Gay Community Center, said as someone who is gay and Jewish, he worries such a new law could make him more vulnerable to unfair treatment. “It’s the first time in my life that I’ve actually considered moving out of Mississippi,” said White, 32. “It made me physically ill the past few days, realizing what they’re trying to do.” From the Associated Press
pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP — in other words, for use to prevent people from getting sexually transmitted HIV in the first place. Since then, critics have warned that many gay men won’t heed Truvada’s once-a-day regimen and complained of its high cost — roughly $13,000 a year. Truvada’s proponents say most insurance plans — including Medicaid programs — now cover prescriptions for it, and they cite studies showing that the blue pill, if taken diligently, can reduce the risk of getting HIV by more than 90 percent. ormon Leader Outlines Opposition to Gay Marriage
A top Mormon leader reiterated the church’s opposition to gay marriage during the church’s biannual general conference. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ stance on homosexuality has softened in recent years, but this marks the second consecutive conference in which leaders took time to emphasize the faith’s insistence that marriage should be limited to unions between a man and a woman, as God created. “While many governments and wellmeaning individuals have redefined marriage, the Lord has not,” Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve said Saturday. “He designated the purpose of marriage to go far beyond the personal satisfaction and fulfillment of adults, to more importantly, advancing the ideal setting for children to be born, reared and nurtured.” In the October 2013 church conference, Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum said human laws cannot “make moral what God has declared immoral.” The church sent a letter to local leaders that includes that message, Andersen said Saturday. “As the world slips away from the Lord’s law of chastity, we do not,” he said. eningitis Kills Three in Los Angeles
Three of eight people who contracted bacterial meningitis this year have died, and all three had sex with other men, Los Angeles County health officials confirmed. The news came a day after the Department of Public Health urged gay men who had HIV or multiple partners to be vaccinated against invasive meningococcal disease. However, the department said the three men who died didn’t have any direct contact with each other. The disease still is considered rare and sporadic and the department is shying away from declaring any outbreak in the gay community, authorities said. Four of the eight people who came down with the illness had sex with other men and three were HIV positive. The three who died in February and March were 27 or 28 years old and two were HIV positive, according to the department. Of the other five people who fell ill, four are out of the hospital and one is hospitalized but recovering. The agency was “insensitive” for failing to announce the deaths earlier, Michael Weinstein, executive director for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, told the Los Angeles Daily News. About a third of the 32 bacterial meningitis cases reported in the county since October 2012 involved men who had sex with men. That population is most at risk right now,

said Dr. Robert Bolan, medical director for the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. Invasive meningococcal disease is relatively uncommon and is less contagious than the flu. However, it can be spread through close contact with saliva or mucus — such as sneezing, coughing, kissing or sharing drinks or cigarettes. The disease can be treated with antibiotics if caught early but if the infection spreads it can lead to brain damage, hearing loss or death. The health department is offering free vaccinations to those without health insurance. From the Associated Press

ay Marriage Would Add $50 million to Colorado Economy
Extending marriage to gay and lesbian couples in Colorado would generate $50 million in spending to the state economy and $3.7 million in state and local tax revenue, according to a recent study. The study from the Williams Institute, a national think tank at the UCLA School of Law, looked at 2010 U.S. Census data on the number of gay and lesbian couples living in Colorado and estimates that 50 percent – roughly 6,200 couples – would choose to marry in the first three years, a pattern that has been observed in Massachusetts and elsewhere. As a result, the state’s wedding business would see an increase by $40 million, and an increase of roughly $10 million in tourism expenditures made by out-of-town guests over the same period. Total state and local tax revenue would rise by $3.7 million, including an estimated $2.3 million in local sales taxes. The first year would produce $2 million of this spending. The boost in wedding spending will generate approximately 436 jobs in the state. From the Associated Press

ganda Police Begin Anti-Gay Raids
Ugandan police, last week, raided a United States government sponsored project known to provide support to homosexuals in Kampala. Frank Mugisha, a Ugandan gay rights activist, confirmed the crackdown to the Associated Press. The Makerere University Walter Reed Project was described by a Ugandan government spokesman as a place where “training youths in homosexuality” occurred. Conversely, Mugisha said the project was a nonprofit partnership between a Ugandan university and a U.S. military HIV research program and it was known to offer services to homosexuals suffering from AIDS. The incident is the latest nightmare for gays as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni attempts to enforce a new law criminalizing same-sex conduct.

5th Annual ‘LGBT Media Journalists Convening’ Held in D.C.
B
iNet USA president Faith Cheltenham stands up for bisexuals at 5th annual LGBT media summit and encourages her peers to start covering bisexual issues more frequently.
Chuck Colbert
A select group of LGBT media professionals gathered recently for a weekend symposium concerning a range of LGBT community issues and media-related concerns. Sponsored by the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) and funded by the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund, the 5th annual LGBT Media Journalists Convening was held Feb. 28 to March 2 at the Capitol Hilton in downtown Washington. A private family foundation based in San Francisco, the Haas fund “promotes equal rights and opportunities with an emphasis on immigrants and gays and lesbians,” according to its mission statement. NLGJA board member Bil Browning, founder and publisher of the Bilerico Project blog, organized the meeting. Also representing Bilerico was its editor in chief John Becker, who wrote about the gathering. “I’m honored to host the only gathering that brings together LGBT media’s traditional journalists and bloggers as one complete package,” Browning said. “I’m proud of how it’s grown every year and how our following on social media has skyrocketed. Not only do participants in the room get to question presenters, but also so do our followers. Everything is on the record so we reach as many people as possible, both inside and out of LGBT media.” Altogether, the 2014 gathering brought together, by invitation only, 74 journalists and bloggers from various LGBT newspapers and websites nationwide. Highlights of the weekend gathering included an opening reception featuring Andrea Mitchell, NBC News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent. Held at the headquarters of the AFL-CIO, the reception also included remarks by the legislative director of the Communications Workers of America, Shane Larson, who spoke about the alliance between the labor and LGBT movements. Another highlight was an early Saturday morning tour of the White House, organized by Ellie Schafer, the highest-ranking lesbian at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Back at the Washington Hilton afterwards, attendees participated in a full day of panels and discussion. The first panel, “Mythbusters: Understanding & Deconstructing the Attack Lines of the Anti-LGBT Industry,” discussed push-back strategies against the anti-LGBT industry, its activists and organizations,

particularly how to debunk junk socialscience research that attacks same-sex parenting, such as Mark Regnerus’ roundly rebuked, but widely-cited New Family Structures Study. The second panel, “What We Don’t Talk About: Radical Methods For Greater Diversity In Queer Journalism,” raised awareness of the need for more effective and fuller coverage of the bisexual and transgender communities, people of color and HIV issues. After lunch, the conversation turned to immigration reform and the future of LGBT media. The final panel, “Airing Our Dirty Laundry: Best Practices in Airing Touchy Subjects,” grappled with the sometimes thorny matters of intracommunity homophobia, bi-phobia and trans-phobia, racism and classism as well as the underfunding for LGBT journalism and best practices when celebrities make antiLGBT missteps. One option suggested was giving people the benefit of the doubt when they are not as well informed on LGBT issues as hoped for. Perhaps the most comprehensive media coverage of the convening was that by Los Angeles based veteran journalist Karen Ocamb, news editor of Frontiers. “The all-day convening on Saturday was less steeped in politics and more about how LGBT media can press the LGBT equality agenda — and how we must confront issues within the community as well— specifically the lack of understanding about and coverage of the intersection of race, transgender and bisexual issues,” Ocamb said. Other attendees offered their impressions and observations as well. For veteran blogger Mike Rogers, “The annual... convening has grown into one of the most important gathering of journalists each year. Not only has the event grown each year, but its increased diversity and the addition of media trainings has taken the program to new heights. As I speak with journalists and online media folks, I hear repeatedly how productive these weekends are.” An attendee for all five years, Rogers said, “Each one has left attendees with useful information, phenomenal personal contacts and skills that will benefit their careers and the movement long after the meeting ends. Most important, the gathering helps to build soflagaynews //
a real community of people who usually know each other via quick phone calls and instant messages. It is efforts like this that bridge the space between people and the web. In a world where so much happens virtually, it is important to support community development. The media trainings are an important addition to the program. By empowering people to speak publicly we give them the tools to create change and ultimately, that is what a movement is about.” Second-time attendee Jason Parsley, associate publisher at South Florida Gay News, said he appreciated “being able to network with LGBT media professionals and outlets from the across the country. More importantly, the topics presented were informative and have inspired several story ideas that I have now assigned to freelancers. One of the topics was bisexuality and how the bi community is portrayed in the media. That presentation inspired me to recruit a columnist from the conference who will address the obstacles and needs of the bi community.” Also a second-time attendee, Jen Colletta, editor at Philadelphia Gay News, said that she “enjoyed getting to hear the diversity of viewpoints among the guests and panelists. Even though we all work in LGBT media, each person brought his or her own experiences to the table, and it was really helpful to learn from those experiences. I particularly enjoyed discussions around ways to strengthen coverage of sensitive topics, as I think that’s something all media outlets, LGBT and mainstream, can improve on.” For her part, Autumn Sandeen, San Diego
SouthFloridaGayNews
LGBT Weekly columnist and blogger at Transadvocate, said that she “got the most out of networking with other journalists, especially the trans journalists I hadn’t met in person previously.” Much to her surprise, however, Sandeen said, “Of the four questions that were posed to Andrea Mitchell,... two of the questions were about trans specific issues. Mitchell didn’t use the terms ‘transgender’ or ‘gender identity’ in either of her responses, and didn’t seem familiar at all with transgender people and issues. It goes to show that the only mainstream cable media that has any awareness of transgender people and issues are hosts on Fox who get almost all of their information from conservative Christian non-profits that the Southern Poverty Law Center has identified as anti-LGBT hate groups.” For his part, third-time attendee Michael K. Lavers, a Washington Blade reporter, said that he was grateful to have “the opportunity to meet fellow LGBT media professionals and reunite with colleagues, sources and friends.” For Lavers, the most interesting panel was the one on “airing our dirty laundry” because “it allowed attendees to ask tough questions about them, and hear feedback on how to cover them in a fair and accurate way. I was admittedly a bit disappointed, however, there was not a lot of time allotted to discuss global LGBT rights issues. This was a missed opportunity considering the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi had just ended and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni earlier in the week signed his country’s controversial anti-homosexuality bill into law.” Lavers also voiced concern about “objectivity” in journalism “even on LGBTspecific issues towards which they very well support.” For future gatherings, he suggested a panel discussion that makes “more clear” the distinctions between advocacy and reporting. Hansen, according to back and forth emails among board members, has in turn resigned. “First and foremost Marc has broke the law and acted unethical by having meetings recorded without the knowledge and consent of the board which constitutes immediate removal from the board,” Secretary of the board Christopher Bailey wrote in an email. “He must be held accountable as we all should. I will pursue these charges regardless of the time frame. I hope that we will do the right thing and continue forward and that Marc will understand that he has acted in ways to harm this organization to the point of acting illegally.” At the same time, according to the email chain, Hansen was also attempting to take a leave of absence for medical reasons until August. “I was looking forward to facing Christopher’s trumped up accusations, including the very interesting latest one about me having the meetings recorded, but my health and my Mother must come first,” Hansen wrote. Bailey though, further accused Hansen of trying to get around the disciplinarian charges by using a leave of absence as a stall tactic. In the emails Bailey did not mince words in regards to his feelings about Hansen’s behavior. “These are just once again false claims made by Marc Hansen to be a bully. Any time someone challenges him on his behavior he tries to completely twist what has been said,” Bailey wrote. “I call on the board of directors to remove him from both the executive board and as a board member.”
arc Hansen & Rocky Bowell
But before the board acted on anything Hansen abruptly resigned. “At this time, consider this my formal resignation as Co-Chair of Pride One of Broward County,” Hansen wrote. “This is not for Christopher, but because of him. I would have liked to stay on and continued the growth of the organization, but I cannot condone some of the directions and childish actions that some of the executive and standing board members have taken. With that being said, I desire all of you, and the organization nothing but the best.” Not all of the board members appeared to be happy with the back and forth exchange, including Co-Chair Rocky Bowell. “I have received phone calls and not even read the emails and have to say that these conversations should not even be happening with the different disciplinary situation that was going on,” Bowell wrote. “There shall be no further emails out about this at this time.” While board member Ellsworth Bonia chimed in with “Stop this madness, we all need [to] sit [and] talk like adult[s] and solve the problem instead of blow[ing] up on everyone.” This isn’t the first time Pride South Florida’s board has erupted into chaos with Hansen being the center of it all. Last year several board members resigned after having a falling out with the now former co-chair. SFGN Publisher Norm Kent called for Hansen’s resignation last year after he refused to turn over tax documents related to an IRS audit. Despite public pressure those documents have yet to be released to the public. This remains to be seen on how these latest developments will affect PSF’s upcoming Stonewall Pride Wilton Manors (formerly Stonewall Summer Pride/Stonewall Street Festival and Parade) event June 21. Recently the City of Wilton Manors awarded annual June event to PSF. soflagaynews //

“What’s Between Your Legs?” is the New “So What Do You Do in Bed?” Cathy Renna
Possibly inspired by Laverne Cox and “Orange is the New Black,” I blurted out the title of this post at a recent panel about media coverage of transgender issues, as I was trying to put into context the quality of coverage of transgender issues today, as compared to gay and lesbian issues in the early 90s. It has stuck in my head since. Back then I was working at GLAAD and gay and lesbian people were still seen by the mainstream media as one-dimensional. They asked questions that directly related to or skirted around our sex lives, because that’s what they thought their audiences wanted to know. They were probably right, for the most part, and it took a lot of time, education and activism to get the media to cover gay and lesbian issues — and people — more substantively. For example, the coverage of the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy when it began was more about showers and submarines than service. It was primarily about men, too, even if lesbians were discharged at a much higher rate. The guys made better, more sensational headlines. When DADT was repealed in 2010, the stories were, pun intended, an entirely different story; activists did a better job and because the culture and the media changed. Which brings me to the swift, growing visibility for transgender people we are seeing in the media. Transgender characters in entertainment were always around, but always as took the brunt of the punch line. When it came to news, it was usually about a hate crime. And I can tell you from personal experience even that coverage had to be fought for, from Brandon Teena to Fred Martinez to Gwen Araujo. But increasingly, we are seeing transgender actors, activists, filmmakers, politicians and people from every walk of life coming out and telling their stories. We just saw the first transgender focused “TEDTalk” by Geena Rocero, who got an instant standing ovation as she finished. The release of the groundbreaking “Injustice at Every Turn” report by the Task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality in 2011 showed the media the devastating impact discrimination and violence have on transgender and gender non-conforming people and is now a reference point for data the media can go back to, which is a critical piece of educating the public. This brings me back to that panel at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. Of course, we talked about Piers Morgan’s
12

recent ham-fisted and very unsatisfying interview with author and activist Janet Mock and the controversy afterwards. In my opinion the underlying tone and language he used were not even good journalism. He asked the same kind of leading questions he always does and botched the opportunity to explore the life of an amazing woman. And obviously he did not have to point out repeatedly that she was assigned male at birth. But does it make him trans-phobic? It is exactly the situation I see time and time again with journalists. They are not homophobic, they are homo-ignorant. So let’s add “trans-ignorant” to the lexicon, especially for those who obviously simply need some education. As I explained to the students in the audience, that education ideally should happen before the coverage whenever possible and with some nuance after if necessary. Piers was shocked and then got defensive. Everybody loses. I love the carrot and stick approach but some folks seem to forget the carrot and go right to taking the stick to someone who is soflagaynews //
making a mistake they don’t even realize is offensive. As someone who has taken the stick out plenty of times, I think discerning between intentional offense and simple ignorance is something we should do more. Like Katie Couric. Her interview with actress Laverne Cox and model Carmen Carrera about their life and careers came to an awkward impasse when she asked them what some would call “the plumbing question.” Laverne handled it extraordinarily well, realizing it was an “educable moment.” And you could see that Katie realized the same thing as Laverne responded to her. After it aired there was a lot of criticism of Katie Couric. She correctly called it an educable moment in her very public apology. Then her apology was criticized. C’mon, really? I think things went a little overboard and could even backfire. I wonder if Katie will think twice before doing anything on transgender issues again but my hunch is she would redouble her efforts to get it right. That said, I have a vision in my head of babies and bathwater, you get my point?
SouthFloridaGayNews
Full disclosure — I have worked with Katie Couric — and she gets gay and lesbian issues. And while surely an ally to transgender people and a great journalist to boot, she took the simple and common route of asking what she and her audience were probably thinking out of curiosity and in being potentially ignorant of how that feels to the person being asked. Laverne’s response was worth a million sessions of “trans 101” not just because of what she said but how she said it. She was firm, confident and frankly pretty nice about it. I know it is painful to be on the receiving end of these questions. “Which one of you is the guy?” Umm, neither of us, that’s the point. Been there, done that. So while we will definitely see ups and downs, much as we did with coverage of gay and lesbian issues, the interest I experience with journalists on trans-issues is impressive and bodes well. I worked on Anderson Cooper’s daytime show where he devoted the entire program to transgender children and young adults. It was amazing. And it was hours and hours of work prior by a whole lot of people, including the families and experts, who answered every question the producers and Anderson had — before we went on air. And make no mistake, it is not about being an “ally,” it is about being a good journalist. I don’t work with clients who just want their names in the papers. My job is to work for fair, accurate and inclusive coverage (you can take the girl out of GLAAD, but not the GLAAD out of the girl… not this one at least) and it’s our responsibility to help the media get it right. There are some amazing things on the horizon as the transgender community and allies not only work with media to get it right, but make media themselves. Next week, the “Trans 100” launches. In late May, the release of “Trans Bodies, Trans Selves” will bring an incredible new resource to transgender people much as “Our Bodies, Ourselves” did in 1971. I know that my tendency is to see the glass half full. Surprising, given how long I’ve been doing this, but when you see people really do their best to get it right it keeps me going. As I said to the CUNY students, if I can get someone to say “I never thought about it that way,” I score it as a victory. And the beginning of a new way of thinking that will impact anything they do in the future. Reprinted from the Huffington Post. Follow Cathy Renna on Twitter at www.twitter.com/CathyRenna

There seems to be no end to random shootings in this country. To watch the news is like listening to a bulletin reminiscing of a war zone. Iraq comes to mind. We have become desensitized to the bloodshed. When it happens we just shrug and think, “Oh this cannot happen to me.” The media and the “experts” focus on finding the “motive” as if, when it is found, and explained, everything makes sense and it is OK. The need for gun control is rarely mentioned anymore. In the meantime four dead in Benghazi call for endless Congressional hearings and apoplectic reports from Fox News. The twenty school shootings that have occurred since that September 11, 2012, were shrugged off and ignored by our worthless Congress. The NRA holds us all hostage and it is vindictive. Case in point: Dick Metcalf, one of the country’s most prominent gun journalists was removed from Guns & Ammo magazine, he no longer appears on popular TV shows, and gun manufacturers do not send him the latest weapons to review. Why? In one of his articles titled “Let’s Talk Limits “ he questioned the Gospel of Guns even though he made it very clear that his commitment to the Second Amendment was unwavering. The second amendment zealots have no middle ground. For this gun toting lunatic fringe it is all or nothing. They bank on the fact that public memory grows shorter each day and yesterday’s massacre is yesterday’s news. Gun nuts, and they are nuts about their guns, always find stuff in the Second Amendment that really isn’t there. One of the most absurd claims is “It is a God given right.” The ridiculous idea of God-given rights isn’t about God and it’s only nominally about rights. It’s an attempt to make one’s political positions rubber-stamped from above and thus not open for discussion. When they bring God into the equation the only thing I can think of, and I am an atheist,

is: “Father forgive them, for they know not what they say.” Being able to carry a gun has nothing to do with freedom. In fact we are on the path of losing whatever little freedom we have left. Terrorism has already curtailed our movements, the escalation in gun violence will bring airport style security checks to any mall near you, department stores, supermarkets, movie theaters, college campuses, and any place where a large number of people can be easily massacred. Yes, gun enthusiasts will be free to carry their arsenals, but as individuals we will not be able to set foot outside our homes without going through metal detectors and security searches. Is the Second Amendment really worth all that? There are enough guns in the U.S. that if you gave one to every adult, you would run out of adults before you run out of guns. Two-thirds of U.S. homicides involve a gun. The GOP, or Guns Over People, stands idle while the fanatics pledge allegiance to the Gun. We might as well spend our energy counting the dead and giving up on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Apparently we cannot change something that will not change. Until this country comes up with an enraged grass-roots movement like MADD (Mothers Against

Medical Marijuana is Coming to Florida
column mombian Advertising to LGBT Families Is a Sweet Deal
FCC420.com
Norm Kent, the past President of the Board of Directors of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), has opened up a new medical marijuana consulting firm in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Florida Cannabis Consultants will be doing business as FCC420.com. “Frankly,” said Kent, “with a constitutional amendment on the ballot to approve marijuana wellness centers here in the Sunshine State, entrepreneurs, growers, and venture capitalists are going to need guidance and direction. I am being swamped with calls and I needed to set up a vehicle to respond professionally.” Few people in the industry can bring to the table the breadth and depth of experience that Kent can, having first worked with NORML four decades ago when he was a student and “toker,” he acknowledges, at Hofstra University. Kent sarcastically notes that “yes, marijuana was a gateway drug. It led to a higher education, law school and a lifetime of fighting for social reforms.” “Today,” Kent notes, “my youthful indiscretion has become a a professional crusade.” In Florida, it’s on the verge of coming to fruition. Early polling suggests nearly 72 percent of Florida citizens support medical marijuana. For the amendment to prevail, 60 percent of the voters must approve the initiative. Kent states that his consulting firm, formed with his law partner, Russell Cormican, “will guide clients through the emerging rules and regulations for Florida wellness centers.” Kent, who has become somewhat of a regular on national TV defending cannabis consumers on the Nancy Grace show, indicates that his new consulting firm “will provide up to date and cutting edge advisories warning ‘cannabiznesses’ of the pitfalls and problems which may occur as they seek to invest their monies and open their doors.” Importantly, Kent warns that you can’t start to “grow now and assert a medical defense tomorrow. The amendment has to pass first.” He adds “you can prepare but you can’t plant.” In 1982, as a young attorney, Kent once sued the state of Florida to prevent it from spraying the deadly herbicide paraquat on marijuana fields growing in the state. Today

his goal is to help the state craft reasonable rules and regulations for the dispensaries and wellness centers which will open when and if the amendment passes. “No one is better equipped to do so,” says his business partner, Russell Cormican. “As the chair of NORML, Norm has criss-crossed the country as a medicinal marijuana advocate, lecturing in colleges, legal conferences, and advising legislators. He is a legitimate expert.” Kent served as vice chair and then chair of NORML from 2012-2014, and has served on their Board of Directors since 1996. It was Kent who pioneered medical necessity defenses for cannabis consumers in Florida as far back as 1988. One of his clients, Elvy Mussika, is one of only four living Americans who have cannabis grown and delivered to them monthly by the federal government. A criminal defense attorney in South Florida for 35 years, since 1979, Kent also successfully represented patients and caregivers of the Key West Cannabis Buyers Clubs in the early 1990’s. “The public is tired of prohibition. It seeks access to medicinal marijuana. I hope to help craft the rules so it happens fairly,” Kent stated, adding “I also want to insure that consumers and investors do not become victims of flim-flam artists and fly-by-night con artists. At FCC420.com, we will be like a third base coach, letting players know where the scoring opportunities are.” FCC420.com will be providing its clients with online weekly updates and advisories through its password-protected website. • soflagaynews //
Dana Rudolph One of the secret parenting tricks my spouse and I used to teach our son to like camping was to ensure that we had s’mores — those gooey confections of toasted marshmallow and chocolate sandwiched between graham crackers — by the campfire every night. I was delighted, therefore, when the Honey Maid graham cracker brand recently showed itself to be a strong supporter of families with same-sex parents — not only with an inclusive ad campaign, but with a brilliant response to some hate mail they received about it. Their move comes on the heels of some of the world’s top brands also running gayand lesbianinclusive advertising in mainstream channels. Interestingly, they all feature not only samesex couples, but samesex couples with kids. Cute kids have always been a good way to sell many products, of course. But showing “homosexuals” near children might at one point have been brand suicide. Now it’s smart business. A million LGBT parents are raising six million kids in the U.S., not to mention the many adults who were raised by LGBT parents, have LGBT kids, or are the relative or friend of one of the above. Showing LGBT families in advertising is a way to tap into a market that is becoming ever more visible. Here’s how some brands, including Nabisco’s Honey Maid, have been doing so lately. The Honey Maid name goes back to 1925, according to its website, making it a venerable brand indeed. In March, it released a new ad campaign with the tag line, “This is
SouthFloridaGayNews
Wholesome,” which featured families with gay dads, interracial parents, and a single parent, among others. That was great as it was — but the company’s response to the hate mail they then received was even better. Instead of merely ignoring it, they asked two artists to take printed copies of the nasty messages, roll them
into tubes, and arrange them to spell out the word “Love.” They made a video of the whole process, added a note that they received 10 times as many messages in support of the ad, and posted it on YouTube. This is the best corporate response to anti-LGBT sentiment I’ve ever seen. While other companies have stood firm in the face of opposition to their lesbian- and gay-inclusive ads, Honey Maid went the extra step to publicly confirm that not only weren’t they cowed by the opposition, but they were turning it into another inclusive marketing video — and a successful one at that. (As of this writing, the second video had almost three million views, with nearly 35,000 “Likes” compared to just over 1,800 “Dislikes.”) Perceptive readers may recall, too, that last Pride, Oreo Cookies posted an image of a rainbow-colored stack of Oreos on social media, and it quickly went viral. Oreos are

mombian another revered Nabisco brand, with a history going back to 1912. While I could probably die happy knowing that a prominent maker of delicious bakery products supports lesbian- and gay-headed families, Nabisco isn’t the only company to show us some love lately. During the Olympics, Chevrolet ran a commercial that included two same-sex couples, one with moms, and one with dads. Coca-Cola ran a commercial that included two gay dads and their daughter. Not only that, but Disney, the company that more than any other defines “family entertainment,” is taking ever greater steps to show its support for us. Not only is Disney World President George Kalogridis openly gay, but the Disney Channel’s children’s series Good Luck Charlie featured a family with two moms in January, in a secondary storyline where the fact of the same-sex parents is treated as no big deal. Disney is also owned by ABC, whose ABC Family channel hosts one of the best shows ever to feature samesex parents and their kids — “The Fosters.” Posters for the show are prominent at Disneyland and Disney World. American brands don’t get much more iconic than Chevrolet, Coca-Cola, and Disney. In fact, all are in the top 100 in the 2013 Interbrand ranking of the Best Global Brands: Coca-Cola at number three, Disney at 14, and Chevy at 89. A newer brand, Amazon, was

named a “top riser,” coming in at 19 — and ran prominent product placement of its Kindle e-reader during “The Fosters’” first season. Obviously, our families need more than just inclusive ads. We need books, movies, and other media that give our children, and ourselves, positive images of LGBT families across many axes of diversity, including family structure, race, religion, class, physical ability, and more. We still need legal rights, including parental rights separate from marriage, employment nondiscrimination, and marriage equality. We need the companies that want us to buy their products to support us through equitable employee policies, donating to LGBT advocacy groups, and calling on elected officials to support LGBT equality. But following the money is not a bad way to gauge sentiment in our country, for better or worse — and if companies feel that we LGBT families are worth marketing to, that’s a good sign for our future. Additionally (speaking as the mother of a child just as captivated by commercials as TV shows), seeing images of LGBT families, even in advertising, can help both our own children and others come to see LGBT families as a normal part of American life. I’ll raise a toasted marshmallow to that. Dana Rudolph is the founder and publisher of Mombian (mombian.com), an awardwinning blog and resource directory for LGBT parents.

Drunk Driving) we will continue to go our merry ways to the “sporting goods” store next door and stock up on baseball caps and AK47s. The same gun fanatics are also the most virulent opponents of abortion. Again, go figure it. They want to prevent the “killing” of the unborn but 20 dead children at Sandy Hook Elementary are just collateral damage. I guess that for our right wing politicians school shootings are a form of class size reductions. In the meantime, nationwide, more than 73 abortion clinics have shut down or stopped providing the procedure amid a Republicanled push to legislate new restrictions on Roe v. Wade. On the other hand nothing has been done to bring guns, and gun’s owners, under control. It’s a dichotomy that shows how schizoid our country has become. The effect of legalized abortion on crime (sometimes referred to as the DonohueLevitt hypothesis) is the theory that legal abortion reduces crime. Proponents of the theory generally argue that since children who are unwanted or whose parents cannot care for them well are more likely to become criminals and that an inverse correlation is observed between the availability of abortion and subsequent crime. Moreover, children born under these conditions are usually less fortunate and have a higher
chance of growing up with mental problems. In particular, it is argued that the legalization of abortion in the United States, largely due to the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, has reduced crime in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It’s an interesting theory. I have my own: perhaps the legalization of marijuana will lead to less shootings and fewer massacres, after all if you are high on pot you are less likely to go searching for people to gun down, you might hunt Fritos, or other munchies, alas you do not need an assault rifle to do that. In fact the short term effects of marijuana include impaired coordination; skewed sensory and time perception; difficulty with thinking, concentrating and problem solving; shortened attention span and distractibility; decreased alertness; impaired learning and memory; and euphoria. Picking up a gun would most likely trigger uncontrollable laughs and giggles rather than an outing with the intent to mow down an entire high school. Colorado has been the theater of many mass shootings from Columbine to Aurora to New Life Church, now that pot is legal there it will be interesting to monitor, over time, if the number of deadly shootings in the State decrease. If that is the case it would be the equivalent of catching two birds with one stone, the only chance we have to end the Wild West mentality of our nation.

Make a Safer ‘Selfie’
There are options on protecting one’s self from HIV Stephen J. Fallon, Ph.D. These days, everything is about the ‘selfie.’ We listen to our personalized music playlists on our phones, binge-watch entire seasons of our favorite program on demand, and target our social media shout outs to specific people on our friends list. So it’s no surprise that you can now customize your strategy for staying safe from HIV. Choice is empowering. Yet too many new choices can be confusing. So here’s the new menu of choices for staying safe; the way to create your safer selfie:
In the largest studies conducted, none of the men who took at least most of their PrEP medications became infected. PrEP does take advance planning, though. You can’t start taking PrEP the day you’re planning to
Condoms:
Lots of guys use condoms when they hook up with someone who looks like he gets around, but then skip the rubbers when they meet a “quality” guy. Even quality guys may have had playful pasts, and many are telling the truth when they say they don’t think that they’re infected, even though they haven’t been tested in years. So how well do condoms protect you? • Best case: If a condom is intact after use, you’re 125,000 times less likely to have contracted HIV. Another undeniable benefit of condoms? You can easily see if the other guy is wearing one. • No guarantees: Condoms only work when they’re being worn. Gay men who claim to use condoms all of the time reduced their HIV risks by 70 percent. Rule out the guys who seem to be forgetting the nights they skipped the condoms, and protection is much higher. Condoms break or slip off in as few as .4 to .6 percent of uses, and that’s because these numbers include the people who fumble with them while drunk or use wildly inappropriate lubricants. Still, you have options: Condoms are not the only choice.
PrEP:
Never heard of it? You will. With PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), an HIV negative man takes the anti-HIV medicines that people with HIV take. The difference is that he takes it every day before a possible exposure to HIV. That’s the “pre” in PrEP. • Best case: PrEP can offer almost complete protection from an HIV exposure.
18
// 4.9.2014
// SFGN.com //
There were some holes in the study, though: nearly all participants were heterosexual and married, so how would the results translate for gay men? In this year’s newer PARTNER study, about a third of the people living with HIV were gay men, and none of their partners were infected. • Best case: Many HIV positive guys are already taking antiHIV treatments. • No guarantees: There’s no way to see if the other guy is taking his treatment the way you could check for a condom. Once they’re off the meds, the drugs start draining out of their system, and that means you’re not protected anymore.
Test twice, talk, and trust:
have sex (it takes about a week to build up in the body). • No guarantees: Truth is, in the largest PrEP study, new HIV infections were only reduced by 44 percent, mainly because many who promised to start PrEP never did, or only took a few pills. So just like condoms, you have to use it to get the benefits.
Treatment as prevention:
If your HIV positive partner is taking anti-HIV medications, that helps him and protects you. Less virus in his bloodstream makes him far less contagious. The first large study said that the risk of catching HIV from a treated person drops 96 percent. soflagaynews //
This is not the same as only hooking up with guys you think are negative. Here, you take an HIV test with your partner, and discuss whether you’re both comfortable having a “closed” relationship (or open, but only with protection). If you both are, you test again to confirm neither had a new HIV infection that the first test missed, and then you can remove the condoms. • Best case: Gay men have been have been using this strategy for years (including me) and it appears to work for those who follow all the steps. • No guarantees: If you do allow “playing,” remember that condoms protect better against HIV than against some other STDs that are easier to transmit. Also, once you’re in the habit of condom-less sex at home, it may be harder to stick to your pledge of protected playing outside.
if something goes wrong and you realize you’ve been exposed to HIV, there’s one more option. If you get on a six-week prescription of anti-HIV medicines right away (“post-exposure”), you can often stop the virus from “latching on.” • Best case: Officially, you have 72 hours to start treatment, and your odds of becoming HIV positive drop by almost 75 percent. • No guarantees: Don’t take the deadline too literally, and wait the whole weekend. The same studies show that the earlier you start PEP, the better the protection.
Why choose any option?
Maybe you just don’t consider staying HIVfree that important anymore. If and when you catch it, you’ll just take a pill a day, and live forever, right? Well, you’re not entirely wrong, but there’s more to it than that. • Best case: If keep to your doctor’s appointments and take your medicines faithfully, you can live a long life these days with HIV. Some studies predict that people can live with HIV for three or four decades, or even up to 53 years. I’ve never been as hopeful for my friends and community as I am these days. • No guarantees: HIV treatments still cause side effects, from the unpleasant and common (diarrhea, fatigue, sleeplessness) to the silent bodily changes that can add up over time and cause other serious health problems including cardiac events, kidney failure, liver failure and bone fractures. Then there’s our community’s dirty little secret of stigma: some guys still act as if HIV makes you sexually radioactive. If you’re negative now, life’s probably easier if you can stay that way.
Which ever safer option you choose, the best thing you can do is to make a choice! Condom-less sex is up 20 percent amongst gay men over the past five years and HIV is still killing almost 15,000 people a year. Almost all new HIV infections are happening to guys who aren’t following any of these strategies. So pick one, stick to it and make a safer selfie! Knocking On History’s Closet Jesse Monteagudo
The LGBT community has been speculating about the sexual orientation or gender identity of great historical figures long before Noel I. Grade wrote “Jonathan to Gide” (1964), the first tell-all compilation of “great gays in history.” To many of us, the fact that Leonardo or Tchaikovsky was “one of us” seemed to validate our existence in a world that only saw us as sinners, criminals or mental patients. On the other hand, historians continue to heterosexualize the greats. One time when a newspaper ran a piece about Michelangelo’s love for other men it drew an angry response from Irving Stone, author of The Agony and the Ecstasy, who insisted that the creator of “David” was straight. When the Dr. C.A. Tripp, posthumously published “The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln” appeared in 2005, keepers of the Lincoln torch went crazy. Tripp, who at one time served as an assistant to the notorious Dr. Alfred Kinsey, placed Lincoln on the Kinsey Scale “as a classical 5 - predominantly homosexual, but incidentally heterosexual.” Lincoln, Tripp noted, had “passionate friendships” with other men, most notably Joshua Fry Speed, with whom Lincoln shared a bed for four years (1837-1841). This was enough to evoke a heated rebuttal from Michael Burlingame, author of “The Inner World of Abraham Lincoln.” Though Burlingame admitted that “Speed and Lincoln were close emotionally” he added that “their letters have no discernable romantic overtones. Besides, there is too much evidence that Lincoln was strongly attracted to women,” giving Lincoln’s spurious romance with Ann Rutledge as an example.

Long before Mel Brooks, historians have tried to analyze Adolf Hitler’s sexuality. In 2001 the German historian Lothar Machtan shocked the world by claiming that Hitler was queer. “Adolf Hitler was fond of men. He had a homosexual nature,” said Machtan, who elaborated in his book “Hitler’s Secret: The Double Life of a Dictator” (published in English as “The Hidden Hitler”). “One must be very careful with the expression ‘homosexual activities’ because we do not know how Hitler lived them out. We can say that until the late 1920s Hitler had a range of homoerotic friendships. Many of them were characterized by contemporaries as homosexual.” During World War I, Corporal Hitler was attached to a fellow soldier, Ernst Schmidt, who was known as Hitler’s “male whore.” As a result of this liaison, Hitler was never promoted. In 1934 Hitler, now the Fuhrer, ordered the death of Ernst Rohm, the gay leader of the Storm Troopers, because he feared that Rohm might reveal Hitler’s sexuality. “Hitler himself never condemned homosexuality, but he allowed the persecution of gays in order to disguise his own true colors,” said Machtan. Hitler being Hitler, no scholars came forth to defend his heterosexuality, as they did in the case of Lincoln or Michelangelo. Last year the artistic world was rocked by the publication of “American Mirror: The Life and Art of Norman Rockwell.” Biographer Deborah Solomon went on a limb when she speculated that the beloved artist, whose work is the epitome of Americana, was a closet gay. Norman Rockwell, Solomon wrote,
soflagaynews //
“demonstrated an intense need for emotional and physical closeness with men. From the viewpoint of twenty-first-century gender studies, a man who yearns for the company of men is considered homosexual, whether or not he has sex with other men.” Rockwell’s family members had a collective fit. They issued a statement claiming that Solomon made 96 factual errors in her book, misused sources and made “highly selective” use of Rockwell’s autobiography. For her part Solomon said she did not believe Rockwell had any gay sexual contacts but that he preferred male company and that “enormous homoeroticism” was evident in his work. As if that was not enough, a few years ago Professor Stephen Knight wrote a piece claiming that the twelfth century folk hero Robin Hood was a poof. Knight, who until recently was distinguished research professor at the University of Cardiff in Wales, claimed that Robin of Locksley was a victim of antigay prejudice who was forced to live in Sherwood Forest with his band of “merry men.” After studying ballads of Robin Hood written in the fourteenth century, Knight concluded that “…the ballads could not say outright that he was gay because of the prevailing moral climate, but they do contain a great deal of erotic imagery. The green wood itself is a symbol of virility and the references to arrows, quivers and swords make it clear, too.” Knight added that Maid Marian was a “beard” who was not part of the legend until the 16th century and that Robin’s real love was “Little John,” one of his “merry men.” Though Knight’s

theories seem far-fetched, even to me, the very merry British group Outrage welcomed the “outing” of Robin Hood: “It is about time school history lessons acknowledged the contributions of famous homosexuals.”

Gay Chorus Brings Megastars to Stage “Totally Awesome” 80s Review Wildly Received
Coming Season Finale Promises to Surpass FTLGMC
What a lineup! Madonna, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Boy George, George Michael and others. These are some of the celebrities – or rather, highly entertaining facsimiles of them – who graced the stage of the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale on March 21 and 22 when the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus presented “Totally Awesome,” its stunningly successful review honoring the popular music of the 80s.
girls,” if not Weather Girls, joining the chorus for a version of “It’s Raining Men” that brought down the house; and a fine facsimile of Boy George telling us “I’ll Tumble 4 U.” The show was rounded out by the chorus on “How Will I Know?”, followed by a stunningly affecting solo performance of “The Wind beneath My Wings” with choral support, and ending with an electric rendition of “Fame.”
Members of Florida’s oldest (and first) gay performing arts organization set the tone of the evening with Lionel Richie’s promise to party “All Night Long.” They kept the promise with an exciting lineup of 80s favorites, some performed by the full chorus with the exciting sound that only this group can make, and others as beautiful solos and small ensemble numbers. The first act included, among other numbers, a humorous visit to the James Bond film, View to a Kill, a surreal staging of “Sweet Dreams,” a dazzling a capella ensemble version of Billy Joel’s “For the Longest Time,” and the winner of the Boom Voice Competition Tommy Paduano casting his spell over the house with the dramatic and poignant solo “BuiDoi” from Miss Saigon. The first act ended with the spirit of – who else? – Michael Jackson, as the chorus presented a vibrant rendition of “Man in the Mirror.”
The show traveled a bumpy road on its way to the Museum stage. A few weeks before the opening, founding Director Dr. Gary Keating went into the hospital for surgery. Thanks to the chorus’ talented accompanist, Alan Caves, the group continued working on the show without knowing just how it would all come together without a director. Fortunately, Christopher Hamblin, Founder and former Artistic Director of the Knoxville (Tenn.) Gay Men’s Chorus appeared on the scene in the final two weeks, having recently moved here, and shepherded the chorus to a wonderfully successful conclusion.
The second act began with a visit to the Nine to Five office as the “girls” performed the film’s title song. The act continued with a touching yet hilarious presentation of “True Colors”; “Richard Simmons” and two would-be “clients” doing “Muscles”; a sort-of Madonna, who never looked so larger-thanlife, in “Material Girl”; some “weathered
After this journey through time, the chorus will journey through geography as it presents its season finale, Ticket to Paradise, on the evenings of Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15, also at the Horvitz Auditorium of the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. Work has already begun on the show, which promises to be even more exciting than the last, with the vibrant sound and imaginative staging that are the signature traits of this top-notch, historic chorus. Information on chorus events and on joining the chorus can be found at www. theftlgmc.org, or by calling 954-832-0060. • soflagaynews //

Treasury Direct – The World’s Safest Safe Ric Reily
Today’s uncertain financial environment is notable for the disappearance of many long held fundamentals of money management. The old rules have disappeared or changed and seem to continue to change daily. Equity markets vacillate in great daily waves. Bonds act counter intuitively. Banks are deemed too big to fail. Commodities are in free fall. What does a saver do with those hard earned dollars that make up the nest egg? When banks, stocks and bonds are no longer reliable, where can you turn? Amidst the turmoil there is another resting place for your money that may allow you to sleep better at night. In the good old days, when the old rules were alive and well, a saver or investor bought United States Government securities, bills notes and bonds, through a broker. The broker earned a commission on the transaction and many brokers held securities for the buyer until sold or matured. In the new ‘wild west’ of money management one island of sanity remains in the sea of financial uncertainty. Treasury Direct is a facility of the US Treasury for individuals to buy and sell bills, notes, bonds, Floating Rate Notes (FRNs) and Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) directly from the Treasury. At no cost over the purchase price the Treasury will issue and hold securities until maturity, sale or redemption. This online facility is a highly secure, easy to use option for buying, selling and holding US Treasury securities. Once you sign up and receive your security credentials you can log on to buy. When you choose your purchase option you will also designate where the Treasury should get payment, a bank account of yours and where the proceeds should go on maturity of your purchase. There will likely be a delay in your purchase because Treasury auctions occur by type of offering and each security is generally auctioned once each month. If an auction is oversubscribed, meaning there are more bids than offerings, you might not acquire the security at all. After your purchase is confirmed Treasury Direct will reach into your bank account and take payment. The payment is discounted for the interest you will receive on your purchase (if any) at today’s low interest rates. If you purchase a $100,000 30-day note for instance, your account

may show a transaction of $99,998.12. On maturity you will receive payment of $100,000. Here is where we reach the interesting depository for your money that may allow you to sleep better at night. When you make your initial offer to buy that includes the source of your purchase funds you will designate where you would like the proceeds to reside on maturity or sale of your US Treasury security. You can request the funds be returned to your bank account. Or, Treasury Direct will hold the funds for you in an interest free cash account. In the old days interest free didn’t appear much of a benefit. Yet, in today’s ‘wild west’ investment climate a calm eddy in a rough stream can be a real respite. So, you simply choose for Treasury Direct to redeem your mature or sold security into your “C of I” – your Certificate of Indebtedness account. The C of I at Treasury Direct can effectively serve as a cash account outside of the banking system. At the moment cash accrues little if any interest in a traditional bank account and any lucid investor is unwilling to lock in token rates for any extended duration. The real risk to cash in today’s environment is not lost interest income but loss of the cash itself. The ultimate goal is to keep your cash until markets reach some semblance of normal, and one way to do that is to park it in your C of I account at Treasury Direct. lifestyle books “Pee-Shy: A Memoir” by Frank Spinelli Terri Schlichenmeyer Sometimes, you wish you had a better memory. You would never, for instance, forget appointments. You could tell better jokes, win more arguments, save more money. You’d remember faces of the people you met and events that happened when you were too small for it to matter. Then again, as you’ll see in the new book “Pee-Shy: A Memoir” by Frank Spinelli, some things you’ll wish you could forget. When he just an 8-year-old, Frank Spinelli received a toy medical kit as a gift, and decided on the spot that he wanted to be a doctor someday. It was a surprise, therefore, years later, when he flunked out of college, his scholarship gone with his dreams. Taking the advice of a friend, Spinelli began therapy to explore the reasons for his dark life and med-school failure. The answer, as it turned out, was easy… It started when Spinelli was just 11-yearsold, overweight, bullied, sports-hating, and
a frustration to his Italian parents, who pushed their son into Scouting. Spinelli hated Scouting, but he admired the area’s Scoutmaster. He liked Bill, and he knew that Bill liked him. Bill took Spinelli out for ice cream, and to do errands. He invited Spinelli over to his house for what Bill called “boy bonding.” When Spinelli eventually told his parents about this molestation, very little was done and even less was said. Fast forward: back on track, Spinelli achieved his dream of becoming a doctor. He opened his own practice in New York and grew his clientele. He seemed like a successful, happy gay man, but old issues still plagued him: sometimes, he couldn’t empty his bladder. Configurations of bathrooms mattered. Other occupants mattered. Urinals were mostly off-limits. It was a remnant of his abuse, and he’d learned to deal with it. And then, old memories began to float forward. Small reminders nagged at Spinelli.
He found a book written about Bill, and learned that Bill had adopted a son. That opened a floodgate of images and questions. So Spinnelli picked up the phone and called the man… Is your jaw on the floor yet? I know mine was as I followed author Frank Spinelli on his incredible journey in “Pee-Shy.” With steady strength and a rare kind of candor, Spinelli writes of a childhood filled with bullying, embarrassment and curiosity for forbidden (girl’s) things. It’s almost a relief as this formerly-outcast kid lets us see him become a successful adult – and yet, it’s a mixed bag, since we’re then privy to his falling apart, his self-doubts and frustrations that his body reacts as it does, now that it’s safe. None of this is easy to read – it’s a squirmy book, for sure - but what makes it worthwhile is the sense of courage and closure that the

ending allows. Be aware that there are some explicit bits to this book, but it’s appropriate and not gratuitous. If you can handle that, though, then “Pee-Shy: A Memoir” is a book that’ll surely stick in your memory.

60 Second Car Reviews 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander GT – Ehhhh, not so much Steve Siler Yes, Mitsubishi still builds cars. Haven’t noticed? Perhaps that’s because, aside from the mighty EVO, Mitsu’s products have been rather unremarkable in recent years. But alas, the massive Japan-based automobile and electronics manufacturer is still making cars, and the redesigned Outlander GT crossover is the freshest of the lot. So while I’m not so fond of its “Marty the Martian” face or its porky body, I decided to give it a chance to win me over with its spacious cabin, bevy of new safety and convenience features and supposed quality improvements. Alas, it let me down hard. While I love its performance oriented all wheel drive system and shift paddles on the steering column, well, this just ain’t the kind of car you want to paddle-shift, you know? The plasticky interior is also disappointing, especially as all of Mitsu’s competitors from Hyundai to Toyota have really stepped

Burger Wars

Who makes the best burger? Dave Griffiths Who doesn’t LOVE a great burger? To me, there are three parts to dynamite burger; the buns, the meat, and the additions you choose. I like a lightly toasted bun, a nice thick, juicy piece of cooked meat, plenty of greens, a spicy Monterey jack cheese, and throw on some jalapenos, bacon, and a chipotle ranch dressing and you’ve got my perfect burger. So my friends and I decided to go on a mission… Who in Fort Lauderdale makes one of the best burgers in town? This is what we found out.
Burger Fi
Love them! My partner and I like Burger Fi for different reasons. He likes it because you can order a burger without a bun and wrapped in lettuce instead of with all the fixins. I like it, because the bun is toasted perfectly and the burgers there are really juicy and fresh. We both agree that Burger Fi is one of our top burger places. The hot dogs and the Parmesan & herb fries are really good too and their thick onion rings are delicious. BurgerFi.com
ROK:BRGR
Tasty! There are so many great burgers here, you might find it difficult to figure out which one to order, so in our case, we ordered two and split them. This helped to maximize our flavor experience. Their namesake burger, the ROK:BRGR has aged Vermont cheddar cheese, maple pepper bacon, and a bourbon barbecue sauce that is amazing. Or you may opt for the King James, the Morning Glory, the Southwestern, or go for a Wild Turkey instead. It’s all good! RokBRGR.com
Smash Burger
Decent. As far as burger chains go, this one is pretty good, but fell below expectations. The burgers were alright. I wouldn’t order their fries again. But my biggest criticism was their lack of timing. One of our orders was served up long before the second order came out and then we waited almost ten minutes for our third order to come out. By then, the others had eaten, so it wasn’t a great dining experience for us, however if you’re out on your own for a quick lunch, it’s worth the visit. SmashBurger.com
Jack’s Hamburgers
A Classic! They have done a great job at perfecting the burger. There are too many awards and accolades to mention here, but for the past 41 years, Jack’s has served up happy diners. Order up, then add your own fixins in their condiment bar and enjoy a juicy and delicious, hand-pressed, and fresh-made-daily burger. Sometimes there’s no use in messing with tradition. JacksOldFashionedHamburgers.com There are so many great places in Fort Lauderdale to try for burgers, so as we continue to look at some of the best burgers in town, we will bring you our findings. What do you think? Leave your comments on www.sfgn.com and your suggestions and we will try them out too!

The biggest complaint about Chris Evans’s latest Marvel hero flick, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” is that the hunky actor just isn’t shirtless enough. (Have you seen the viral Internet video with a hot compilation of all of Evans’s “best” scenes, yet?) Actually, critics have praised this film as one of the best in the franchise, with a smart screenplay that isn’t overwhelmed by computer graphics. Monday is a great night to head to the movies and Captain America is the guy to root for against the bad guys. Check local listings for show times.

A few months back, Australian filmmaker Tonnette Stanford, an out lesbian, presented two pilot episodes of her web series “Love Bytes.” The hilarious show follows the wild and wooly romantic lives of a group of close knit friends. Some of whom are gay, some lesbians, and even a few straights, all of whom are entangled in a lot of edgy, boundary pushing humor. There’s also a bit of profound and insightful commentary on how we, as humans, clumsily stumble around in the dark in our search for love. Those two episodes were well received, and Stanford has now launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to finance a full season of “Love Bytes.” She spoke to SFGN from ‘down under’ about her baby.
How much do you need to raise, and how much have you raised so far?
So far we have raised 68 percent of our target. We have to raise another $3,755.
Can you describe the challenges and the rewards of producing an independent web series?
The challenges and the rewards are many. The rewards include working with such a talented and supportive team of people. We are all in it together, working toward creating a show that we can be proud of. I love the collaboration process, particularly working with the actors and discovering new ideas together. It has also been very exciting to see the show building an audience. Our goal was to create a show that could be embraced by queer audiences around the world and to almost reach one million viewers with our two pilots is very rewarding. The feedback has been so lovely and has spurred us on to keep going. The challenges include the writing process — which is also rewarding in equal measure. Each episode is a self-contained story involving all three characters and to keep the episodes around the 10-minute mark is quite difficult. I’ve made numerous films in the past, but this show has required me to direct sex scenes for the first time. That was challenging and

daunting, but luckily in the pilot the two actors were real girlfriends, so we didn’t have to manufacture or fake the chemistry. That made the situation a lot easier for me. Lastly, the biggest challenge in producing any web series is the funding situation. It’s always a struggle to find the money to make the show, which is why we launched a crowd funding campaign so that we can hopefully fulfill our dream of completing the season. Fingers crossed. Are all actors from the pilots on board?
Yes, all the main actors will be returning with the addition of Nigel Turner-Carroll playing Stacey’s ex-fiancé. “Love Bytes’” featuring of gay men, lesbians and straight people as part of the same social circle is a far cry from what film, and the world, was like not too long ago. This show is a celebration of sexuality and friendship. It doesn’t matter if you’re gay, straight or lesbian. We’re all looking for the same thing — to love and to be loved. I remember when I first came out, I would have this amazing circle of exclusively lesbian friends, like “The L Word,” but that hasn’t exactly worked out. Don’t get me wrong, I have lots of lesbian friends, but I quickly realized that just because someone has the same sexuality as you, doesn’t mean that you have anything in common. It’s been 10 years since I’ve come out and my friendship group includes lots of gay men, lesbians and straight friends. I think it’s a wonderful thing that as we continue to move closer to equality, the boundaries that we have put up, usually to protect ourselves, will not be needed and we can open up our social circles to be more inclusive. This can only be a good thing.
When and where will the seasons be available?
We will be shooting in June and the rest of season one will be released no later than August of this year. To support “Love Byte’s” Kickstarter campaign, visit LoveBytes-TheSeries.com for more information.

New Spring Show ‘Drawing Lines– Making Space’ Opens at Coral Springs Museum of Art Andrea Richard
“The theory of my art is based on empathy,” LGBT artist Henning Haupt says. “It’s not about reading text or seeing a narrative. It’s more about feeling and sensing tension.” Color, abstraction, spatial composition and architecture heavily influence the German born and raised artist. He keeps a well-organized and tidy studio just outside Fort Lauderdale’s FAT Village. His new show “Drawing Lines – Making Space,” at the Coral Springs Museum of Art opened on Thursday, March 27. The new works feature oil paintings filled with repetitive, gestural lines – a squiggly display of thoughts onto canvas. The lines move along like a dialogue that speaks to the viewer in both subtlety and complexity. Each painting is treated with vivid colors – yellow, red and fuchsia contrasted with grey, white and black lines. “Color is very subjective,” he says. “We perceive color with our eyes, but it’s perceived with emotion. And color is often associated with something unspeakable.” That unspeakable idea is left to the viewer to decide according to the tall and handsome artist. The pieces in “Drawing Lines” do not have names because they don’t convey a specific narrative. Titles such as “White on Red,” serve to describe the basic aesthetic elements, leaving viewers left to observe their own story. Overall, the exhibition explores the relationship between visual and spatial compositions, which play into Haupt’s architectural background. He earned a Ph.D. in the field from the Technical University Braunschweig of Germany. And he is an assistant professor at Florida Atlantic
University’s School of Architecture. He teaches courses on color, material and space and architectural design and how these subjects can interplay. Throughout his artistic career, Haupt has straddled the worlds of architecture and painting. At times, he was more involved in the latter than the former and vice-versa. But he admits that picking one was a constant life struggle, so he’s devoted to both in his own way. “My last paper in my academic work at FAU was about the romance between painting and architecture,” he says. “Sometimes there is love making and other times things do not go as well.” He ponders deeply about color and space, so much so that he sometimes works as a color consultant. As part of the show, an installation consisting of eight paintings hung-up from the ceiling and mounted back-to-back create a room for viewers to enter and feel encompassed by the lines and art. Also, he has hung-up paper paintings from the ceiling to the floor that dangle into halfcircle forms. A feeling of walking through the paintings occurs. Accompanying Haupt’s show, artist Craig Carlisle will showcase “Big Heads & The Peaceful Valley Paintings,” and Sylvia Tarshis will present “Florals.” “Drawing Lines – Making Space” runs through May 17, 2014, at Coral Springs Museum of Art, 2855 Coral Springs Drive, in Coral Springs. Call 954-340-5000 or visit coralspringsmuseum.org. General admission is $6; museum members are free. soflagaynews //

‘Drag Race’ Says Goodbye to Gia Gunn Michael Cook
Gia Gunn is one of the most polarizing queens to come out of the cast of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” this season. Between her gorgeous runway looks and sharp tongue, you never knew what Gia was going to say or wear on a weekly basis. SFGN spoke with Gia about her “Snatch Game” choice, who she would impersonate if she had the chance to do it over again, and what she may (or may not) regret.
Gia, you “sashaying away” so early was pretty controversial. Why do you think that is?
Final perFormances, april 10 & 12
I had so much more to offer and America knew that. It was unfortunate that I wasn’t bombarded with all the challenges that were not my strengths all at once. I also know my charisma on the show definitely added a lot to the show and gave it life. I had a voice and whether or not people fully agreed, they were listening and I was heard! The fact that there were “sloppier” queens still on the runway after I left just goes to show you it’s not all about the execution of a look or being super fem and beautiful. “RPDR” wants talent and really lets you know where you stand in terms of the full spectrum. There is much more to drag than just rhinestones and thousands of dollars worth of costumes. I learned that very quick!
“Snatch Game” is one of the most notoriously difficult challenges every season. What made you switch from Selena to Kim Kardashian?

My original plan was to do “Ms Swan” from MadTV. However due to legal issues, I wasn’t able to do her on the show. Selena was something last minute that I grabbed literally while running out the door. I didn’t have many options in terms of giving a specific characters look. And at the moment I was so worried and concentrated on the “look” not remembering that it’s more about being comical and funny. The more I thought about it, Selena was not a funny character and she is deceased. Without poking fun at her and making inappropriate jokes about her and her life, I didn’t think her character would have gone over well with America. So like I said on the show I decided to go with something more “safe” and obviously that wasn’t much better! However, I learned so much from this experience and don’t regret a thing!

If I could do it all over again, I think I would do Manila Luzon or Margaret Cho!
Many have said that the “shade” you threw on the show was pretty severe.
SouthFloridaGayNews
Any regrets on anything you said or did?
Absolutely not! I signed up for a gay reality TV show with a bunch of men in wigs and sweated out panty hose! How much shadier does it really get? Sorry if my opinions were clearly stated and others were forgotten. Plus, I don’t call it shade, I call it simple honesty.
You also clashed with a couple of the other girls, most noticeably Joslyn Fox. Who did you get closest with on the show? Anyone you won’t miss?
I was closest to Laganja and Adore on the show; But me and Laganja continued to stay close where Adore kind of faded off into her own world. Which was completely fine! We were in a competition and it was probably best to not get so close to other contestants. However, the bond Laganja and myself had was very obvious and we knew no matter the results we were going to be friends. To this day we talk very frequently and cherish our friendship very much. Couple of girls won’t be missed but I think it’s pretty clear who those are....considering there’s nothing to miss from the beginning?
Milk being “safe” and you leaving was a shocking decision for some. Looking back, how do you think Milk managed to stay around this long?
She was adding an immense amount of versatility to the competition and she knew exactly what she was doing. Which was being herself, and that’s why she got casted to begin with!
What’s next for Gia Gunn? A run for the “All-Stars” crown maybe?
Absolutely! Keep striving for more and continue to prove myself to RuPaul and America that I am a fierce entertainer and my aesthetic will lavish and continue to inspire others. As well as send chills up your man’s back! RuPaul’s Drag Race airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on LOGO Channel or on Logotv.com.

Everyone needs to eat, drink and breathe. No one needs art. Even so many are inexorably drawn to creative works. I originally met Chisolm at a Pride Business Alliance event in West Palm Beach some years ago. He is rapidly inclusive with a quick clipped personality like every other scene on a film reel. Thoughts come and go quickly even as he engages those around him. Chisolm, an artist in West Palm Beach, Fla, hales from Mississippi. He began creating art and drawing as a child and studied art at the University of Southern Mississippi, the alma mater of Jimmy Buffet and Bret Favre. With his partner Russ, Chisolm moved to Palm Beach in 2009 where he began creating his unique Layers In Time paintings. This artist creates what momentarily resides in his mind and is instantly lost to the ages; motion, passion and energy. Working with body flexing, causal cursive movement writing creates bold powerful pieces layered with contrast. There is no format; without specific beginning and without defined ending. After working in several genres, “Layers In Time” is his current work. Each piece begins as a sheet of thin plastic hung on a wall. Onto the plastic sheet he brushes, dabs and runs acrylic paints he has mixed from primary and secondary colors, layer upon layer, week after week. Over an inch thick on some the paint flows to the bottom often creating a three dimensional effect. Scrunching and pinching as the piece dries adds additional dimension. The effect is a depth of texture inviting to touch; making the art not simply visual but also tactile. Buyers and gallery browsers often comment on some feature they see in the work. Chisolm sees nothing in the flow, each piece being simply a creative expression of a moment in mind. The time involved in each piece is such that he may have 20 pieces in various stages of completion at any time. Upon completion a month or more can be required for the piece to completely dry after which the plastic sheet is carefully removed from the wall and attached to its canvas, which itself may also be painted. Once in place a thick layer of liquid epoxy it applied and brushed into each nook and cranny, then over and around the edges to seal the parts into one. “Layers In Time” pieces can be hosed off for cleaning. “Layers In Time” has been on display at

C
ast of Steel Magnolias from left to right Sally Bondi (Cleiree Belcher), Robin Proett Olson (Ouiser Boudreaux), Aaron Bower (M’Lynn Eatenton), Patti Eyler (Truvy Jones), Linda Farmer (Anelle Dupuy-Desoto), and Alison McCartan (Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie) The Wick Theatre (formerly the Caldwell) in Boca Raton launched its new production of “Steel Magnolias” on Friday, April 3. It will run through April 20 with matinees and evening performances. Times and tickets are available online at www.thewick.org. “Steel Magnolias” is a heart-warming depiction of the strong and timeless bonds of friendship among a group of women in Chinquapin, a small (fictional) town in Louisiana. It portrays how they come together to enjoy the good times with wit and humor and support one another through the sorrows. It demonstrates the meaning of the title since they are as tough as steel and as fragile as a magnolia blossom. No men appear onstage in the play but male characters in roles of families, friends and lovers of the six women who gather at Truvy’s (Patti Eyler) beauty salon take on lives of their own through the women’s frequently sardonic descriptions. The cast at the Wick is well balanced with two quibbles, Aaron Bower as M’Lynn Eatenton seems to be not much older than her bride-to-be daughter, Shelby EatentonLatcherie, played by Alison McCartan. And, the range of southern accents was initially disconcerting to the ear but that does tend to pass as one travels deeper into the story. The timing of the repartee among the women was a little slow at the outset and audience reactions were intermittent with spotty laughter but the deliveries corrected as the play progressed. In the post-intermission scenes cast members were tightly on point as the play moved from pizzicato jocularity to shared intense pain. Sally Bondi as Clairee Belcher and Robin Proett Olson as Ouisier Boudreaux delivered upbeat and dour humor respectively. Linda Farmer as Anelle Dupuy-Desoto pulled off a convincing and amusing conversion from

lost soul to born-again Salvationist. Most gay audience members, even those who have never seen the play or the movie, are probably familiar with Clairee’s quoting her gay nephew’s definition of gay men, “All gay men have track lighting and all gay men are named Mark, Rick or Steve.” The line got the greatest response from the audience especially as the dialogue continued to Ouisser obliviously sharing that her grandson had recently recommended track lighting at her home. The transition from humor to sorrow was seamless and brought tears and sniffles to many in the audience as the women came together to support M’Lynn in her grief at her daughter’s death. These strong and humorous individuals responded as one in sharing their friend’s loss. The play is powerful and the Wick’s production is very good. The strong cast and direction make it a moving experience. The lighting, staging, costumes and sets come together to make it memorable. The play was written by Robert Harling based on a short story he wrote about his sister’s death from diabetic complications in pregnancy. According to Wikipedia, the play first opened at the WPA Theatre in New York City in 1987 and moved to the Lucille Lortel later that year. It ran for almost three years and closed after 1,126 performances. The Broadway debut opened at the Lyceum Theatre in April 2005 and closed four months later after 23 previews and 136 performances. In 1989 a film version directed by Herbert Ross was released. The Wick Theatre and Museum is located at 7901 N Federal Hwy, Boca Raton. More information and tickets are available at 561-995-2333 or www.TheWick.org.
