Michael Sam Becomes First Openly Gay Player in NFL

President Barack Obama congratulated Michael Sam for being the first openly gay football player selected in the National Football League draft. “From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove every day that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are,” Obama said in a statement issued by the White House. Sam, an All-American defensive end who

played for the University of Missouri, made history when he was picked by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh and final round. He was the 249th of 256 players selected. The 24-year-old got the news by telephone from Rams’ coach Jeff Fisher, who told Sam: “You are a Ram. The wait is finally over.” Sam’s embrace of his boyfriend — and their kiss — made much news as well.

Key West Judge Retires After Gay Website Profile Emerges

A judge in the Florida Keys said his decision to retire early came after an “inappropriate invasion of my privacy.” Judge David Audlin announced in April that he was retiring with four years left on his term. Friday was the Monroe County chief circuit judge’s last day. A blogger found a profile for Audlin in January on Manhunt.net, a website that bills itself as the world’s biggest gay hookup site,

the Miami Herald reported. The next day a website called Above the Law posted a story about Audlin’s profile. Audlin, 56, did nothing illegal and no one has called on him to resign, but after contemplating the matter for several months he decided to return to private practice. Florida Gov. Rick Scott will appoint a replacement to the bench.

Benham Brothers Respond After HGTV Cancellation Twin brothers David and Jason Benham have lost their opportunity to host their own HGTV show. The brothers ran afoul of the network after the site Right Wing Watch published a post about the pair, labeling David Benham as an “anti-gay, anti-choice extremist” for reportedly leading a prayer rally in 2012 outside of the Democratic National Convention held in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The site posted a recording of Benham talking to a talk show host about “homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation” and “demonic ideologies” taking hold in colleges and public schools. The Benham brothers were the planned stars of the HGTV show “Flip It Forward,” set to premiere in October, in which they would have helped families purchase homes they otherwise could not afford.

Humans of Wilton Manors Humans of Wilton Manors is an attempt at capturing the exhaustive, diverse community of Wilton Manors. I was inspired to do this after coming across Humans of New York, a Facebook page which uses photographs and quotes to provide strangers with a view of the daily life of people in New York. I chose Wilton Manors because of the unique, heavilyLGBT oriented crowd. In a 2010 census, Wilton Manors was ranked no. 2 nationally for its percentage of gay residents per total population. soflagaynews //

Through this project which seeks to highlight the people of a unique city by matching their pictures with quotes from them, I hope to convey what makes Wilton Manors so special. Humans of Wilton Manors will be posted every week day at around noon throughout the summer. I hope that everyone will appreciate the subjects as I do. - Nicole Wiesenthal, South Florida Gay News Intern

Iowa Editor Fired Over Anti-Gay Blog Nicole Wiesenthal

The editor of a small Iowa newspaper was fired after posting an anti-gay blog post about “the Gaystapo effort to reword the Bible.” The editor of Newton Daily News, Bob Eschliman, wrote on his personal blog claiming that people “must fight” the “enemy,” the gays. Eschliman took verses from a website for the Queen James bible — “because King James was a flaming homo, don’t you know” — and quoted the website’s analysis on his site. “They want to erase all references to sodomy as sin,” Eschliman wrote. Eschliman claimed, on his blog, that the homosexual’s end goal was to get “Christendom to abandon their faith.” John Rung, the president of the Daily News’ publisher, Shaw Media, explained why Eschliman was fired and distanced himself from Eschliman’s actions. “While he is entitled to his opinion, his public airing of it compromised the reputation

of this newspaper and his ability to lead it,” Rung said. Rung cited on the newspaper website that “The First Amendment does not eliminate responsibility and accountability for one’s words and actions.” There have been mixed reactions to Rung’s actions to fire his employee over a personal blog post.

Charlie Crist: I Left the GOP Over Party’s Anti-Gay, Racist Views

Former Florida governor Charlie Crist said in a new TV interview that he left the GOP because of the party’s racist and anti-gay views. I couldn’t be consistent with myself and my core beliefs, and stay with a party that was so unfriendly toward the African-American president, I’ll just go there,” Crist told Fusion’s “America with Jorge Ramos.” “I was a Republican, and I saw the activists and what they were doing; it was intolerable to me.” Crist is now running for Florida governor as a Democrat and told the

alifornia Bill Revamps Birth Certificate To Help Same-Sex Parents

Lawmakers in the Assembly have approved a bill that updates birth certificates to reflect the status of same-sex parents. AB1951 passed Thursday on a 51-13 vote, with a few Republicans joining in support. The bill is sponsored by Equality California, a gay rights group, and was carried by Democratic Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez of Los Angeles. The current design of California birth certificates requires parents to identify as one mother and one father. Bill supporters say that the previous bill forces gay and lesbian parents to inaccurately identify themselves on their children’s documents. This bill revamps birth certificates to allow parents to identify as a mother, father or parent. It would take effect in 2016 if approved by the Senate and signed into law. No Republicans spoke in opposition. From the Associated Press

ndiana Must Still Recognize One Gay Marriage

The state of Indiana must recognize a lesbian couple’s out-of-state marriage throughout their legal fight to have one of the women named as a spouse on her terminally ill partner’s death certificate, a judge ruled Thursday. The Indiana attorney general’s office said it would appeal. U.S. District Judge Richard Young’s preliminary injunction extends last month’s temporary restraining order requiring the state to list Amy Sandler as the spouse of Niki Quasney after Quasney dies of cancer. It holds throughout their court proceedings and applies only to them — not to other gay couples who were legally wed elsewhere and are also seeking to have Indiana recognize their marriages.

television station that he did not leave the Republican Party and become an independent in 2010 because he would have lost to Sen. Marco Rubio in a primary. He said he made the switch because the GOP’s leadership “went off the cliff.” “They’re perceived now as being anti-women, anti-immigrant, antiminority, anti-gay, anti-education, antienvironment,” he said. Politico notes that Crist made similar remarks in his memoir. “Sometimes,” Crist wrote, as quoted

by Slate, “the public’s feelings seemed partly racial. Sometimes, I’m sure they were not. But Barack Obama was the first African American in the White House. Florida had helped to put him there. And it was impossible to imagine an equal measure of virulence for any politician whose skin was white.” Crist wasn’t always for gay rights, however. The former Florida governor, who became a Democrat in 2012, supported the state’s ban on same-sex marriage in 2008. He has since apologized for backing the amendment.

“We are so relieved,” Quasney said in a statement from Lambda Legal, the gay rights group that represented her and Sandler in court. “We are so thankful that we can move forward and concentrate on being with each other. Our time together and with our daughters is the most important thing in the world to me. I look forward to the day when all couples in Indiana have the freedom to marry.” Young did not rule on whether Indiana’s gay marriage ban is unconstitutional. That ruling is expected to come later. The attorney general’s office said in a statement that it is notifying county clerks of the decision and informing them that they still are prohibited from issuing marriage licenses to other samesex couples in Indiana. They are among several couples who have sued Indiana to have their out-of-state marriages recognized. But they are the only couple so far to win that recognition. From the Associated Press

eon Trees Rocker Happy To Be A Role Model For Gay Mormons

When Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees announced in March that he’s gay, the bigger headline behind his revelation was that he is one of the few publicly out Mormons. The reaction he got wasn’t what he was expecting. “I was surprised at how many Mormon Church leaders wrote me messages saying, ‘This is great that you’re doing this,’” the 30-year-old lead singer said in a recent interview. “That really was cool.” Glenn said he is looking forward to speaking up about gay acceptance in his religious culture and assisting young adults who face some of the hardships that he experienced. “On the level of being a role model for kids soflagaynews //

or LGBT Mormon youth, I’m totally down because I come from that background and I would be able to speak to them honestly,” he said. Glenn has performed with the Provo, Utah-based Neon Trees for nearly a decade. All members of the alternative band are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Glenn said his recent revelation isn’t a reflection of the entire band. “I was also really clear to my bandmates, we’re not a gay band all of a sudden; this doesn’t typecast us,” he said. “I’m a gay man and it’s fine, and our shows aren’t going to become a gay show.” Glenn said he hopes members of the Mormon church will continue to become more understanding and accepting of homosexuality and gay marriage. BC Pays For All New York Weddings

Modern Family helped out New York City couples looking forward to starting their own families. On May 12, ABC covered the cost of all marriage licenses and ceremonies for the city of New York at the New York City Clerk’s Office to commemorate the two-part season finale to their show Modern Family. Stonestreet and Ferguson announced the news on “Good Morning America” that morning when talking about their characters’ wedding. The finale will feature the marriage between Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), two characters who made up the prominent gay couple in the show. In a previous episode, Mitchell confronted his father about the wedding, asking him not to attend. “I actually really applaud the writers for sort of going there with that relationship, because I think it’s something very real and a lot of parents sort of have their own evolution with accepting a gay kid, and certainly Jay is going there with Mitchell,” Ferguson, who recently married his husband, said, according to Entertainment Weekly. The Emmy Award-winning show has become a favorite for many because it comically captures the issues families face in the 21st century. Modern Family airs Wednesday at 9 p.m. on ABC.

rkansas Ban on State Marriage Struck Down by State Judge

Arkansas became the latest state to have its ban on same-sex marriage overturned, after a state judge Friday declared the voter-approved measure to be unconstitutional. Twenty-one gay and lesbian couples were part of a group of plaintiffs challenging Amendment 83 to the Arkansas constitution, saying it violated their federal and state rights of equal protection and privacy. There was no indication from the court the decision would be temporarily put on hold pending appeal, leaving unclear whether some same-sex couples could begin getting married immediately. The state has the option of asking for a stay on enforcement, and the legal fight is now likely headed to the state supreme court.

In an upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, Lewinsky voices her feelings of regret and humiliation and the effect that the scandal has had on her career. In a preview excerpt from the article, Lewinsky writes that she decided to go public after hearing about Tyler Clementi — a gay Rutgers freshman who committed suicide in November 2010 after his roommate secretly streamed him and another man kissing via Webcam.

Hollywood is coming out strong for LGBT rights and against the new Brunei law that punishes homosexuality with death by stoning. Jay Leno, Richard Branson, Ellen DeGeneres and Sharon Osbourne are just a few of the celebrities protesting. Recently organizations have taken a stand by protesting the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Hotel Bel-Air, which are both part of the Dorchester Collection, which connects it to the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah. Even Kim Kardashian joined the boycott, moving her bridal shower from the hotel because of all of the negative attention it received.

Cantors Assembly to Discuss LGBT Issues

This will be a first for the conservative Jewish group Denise Royal It’s a landmark year for the Cantors Assembly, the largest professional organization for Cantors. This year’s convention marks the first time they’re going to discuss LGBT issues in the synagogues they represent. The Cantors Assembly is affiliated with Conservative Judaism. The event will be held from May 18-22 in Weston — marking the first time since 1992 that the local Southeast Region is hosting the International Convention. It will be held at the newly renovated Bonaventure Country Club, Resort and Spa. The Cantors Assembly is the first of the professional arms affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism to have a discussion of this subject matter. “Until now the issue of LGBT families in synagogues, while they weren’t turned away, has never really been talked about in the open because there were no openly gay clergy to champion the cause and therefore while it wasn’t ignored, it just has never been talked about in this form,” said Zachary

Other topics covered during the conference include social media, overcoming obstacles at work and one’s creative life and negotiating and conflict resolution. Keith Crisco, Clay Aiken’s opponent in the Democratic primary for U.S. Congress in North Carolina’s 2nd congressional district, was found dead in his home Monday, the apparent victim of a slip and fall accident, authorities said. Details of Crisco’s death are still emerging as the family has asked for privacy at this time. Crisco recently turned 71 and was a highly respected businessman who had served as North Carolina’s commerce secretary. Officials with Crisco’s campaign said he was preparing a concession speech for the primary election, where at last count, he trailed Aiken by fewer than 400 votes. Aiken, a pop singer best known for his runner-up finish on the television show ‘American Idol,’ suspended his campaign and, in a statement to the press, called Crisco a “good and honorable man.” Aiken, 35 and openly gay, will likely go on to face incumbent Republican congresswoman Renee Ellmers in the fall general election.

Young political activist comes out publicly about HIV status John McDonald

jeanmichelmcdonald@gmail.com

He’s a fresh new face on the Florida political scene — with a brave story to tell. Meet Aaron Darr, 23, a self described “warrior for the middle class” who calls Largo, Fla. home. He is also gay and HIV positive and very open about both. “I want to start a dialogue,” Darr said about disclosing his HIV status. “And I want to do it before the other side tries to define me as some dying AIDS patient.” Darr is far, far from that. He is energetic, cheerful, loves to talk politics and is intent on making a difference. He describes himself as a “Clinton Democrat” and is flirting with the idea of running for either the Florida House of Representatives or U.S. Congress in his adopted home of Pinellas County, a district he calls “bellweather” in national politics. “I woke up one morning and realized that I can’t sit on the sidelines anymore because there are too many in the state of Florida that are hurting right now,” said Darr, who added he will likely decide about which office to pursue in November. In the meantime, Darr is giving interviews

to news outlets across the globe about his story of struggle, survival and, ultimately, success. He grew up in Ohio, raised by a single mother. “My father was abusive,” he said. “My mother worked two jobs so I had to learn how to cook and clean and take care of myself early.” He realized he was gay early too, coming out when he was 13. Later, during his junior year in high school, he tested positive for HIV. “I was completely devastated,” Darr recalls. “I was scared from what I knew of HIV. I had thought my life was going to end like the character Angel in the musical ‘Rent.’ I was just completely devastated.” But Darr battled back, went on medication, moved to New York City and began to live. He majored in musical theater at the American Musical & Dramatic Academy and performed on Broadway, all the while volunteering on numerous political campaigns, chief among them, Hillary Clinton’s 2008 Presidential campaign.

soflagaynews //

“The struggles I had gone through being raised by a single mom were the struggles I knew Senator Clinton understood,” Darr said. “I knew she would fight for middle class families.” Darr says his story is a source of personal strength as he navigates the political terrain here in Florida. He moved to the Sunshine State in 2012 and immediately connected with progressive groups. He revealed his HIV status recently in an interview with the website Queerty.com in an effort to rid himself of any “skeletons in the closet.” “It was like coming out all over again,” he said. Darr said he has received much support in recent weeks and is hoping he can further educate society on HIV, while reaching out to a younger generation. “I do feel I had lacked the information necessary to protect myself as a teenager,” he said. “In Ohio, there are those who believe that keeping men, women and children in ignorance of reproductive healthcare, contraceptives and information that children would and should learn at a young age about the ways they can protect themselves, isn’t something that should be included in education in public schools.”

Unpopular Science

Why do Americans believe smoking causes cancer, but not in climate change? Jesse Monteagudo

One of great television events of the last century was “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage” a 13 part science series written by the astronomer Carl Sagan. First broadcast by PBS in 1980, it was then the most widely watched series in the history of public television. So much has happened to scientific knowledge during the last 34 years to make “Cosmos” though still worth watching, almost obsolete. Others agreed, which is why there is now “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” which premiered on Fox in March. It is hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, in my opinion the worthy successor to the late Sagan. “Cosmos’” scientific view that the universe is “billions and billions” of years old (to paraphrase Sagan’s now-famous quote), did not go well with creationists who believe that the cosmos was created 6,000 years ago. They demanded equal time, something that Tyson, who does not want to debate ignorance, refused to grant. But it appears that many Americans seem to agree with “Cosmos’” creationist critics. According to a recent Associated Press poll many in the U.S. are skeptical about the Big Bang theory, evolution and climate change, things that “Cosmos” takes for granted. Most Americans do not reject all science offhand: according to the poll, “Just 4 percent doubt that smoking causes cancer, 6 percent question whether mental illness is a medical condition that affects the brain and 8 percent are skeptical there’s a genetic code inside our cells.” On the other hand, “Four in 10 say they are not too confident or outright disbelieve that the Earth is warming, mostly a result of manmade heat-trapping gases, that the Earth is 4.5 billion years old or that life on Earth evolved through a process of natural selection, though most were at least somewhat confident in each of those concepts. But a narrow majority — 51 percent — question the Big Bang theory.” The poll is startling to do those of us who thought those matters were settled years ago, and suggests that Tyson and other popularizers of science have their work cut out for them. Some scientists were not surprised. “Science ignorance is pervasive in our society, and these attitudes are reinforced when some of our leaders are openly antagonistic to established facts,” said Randy Schekman of the University of California, who won the 2013 Nobel Prize in medicine. Not surprisingly, trust in science declines

as religious faith rises. To many God-fearing Americans, “values and beliefs trump science,” said Alan Lerner, chief executive of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. And when those values and beliefs are reinforced by leaders and politicians it only makes the situation worse. For example U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, Republican from Georgia, said in 2012 “all the stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and [the] Big Bang theory [are] lies from the pit of hell.” The fact that Broun is a doctor of medicine is startling. The fact that he sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology is appalling. Much has been written about the dumbing down of America. Critics blame this on the decline of education: many children are home-schooled or charter-schooled, and career training has replaced liberal arts in many colleges. Sarah Gray, a writer for Salon. com, wrote that “the intentional spreading of misinformation could be partially to blame” for the shocking poll numbers. These days, many Americans get their knowledge from the Internet or even worse —Fox News. It’s also politically and economically convenient for many in power to keep the masses dumb and happy. Robert Lefkowitz of Duke University, winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in chemistry, saw “the force of concerted campaigns to discredit scientific fact” and blamed significant interest groups for their campaign against scientific truths. It’s no surprise that much of the skepticism about climate change comes from the oil, gas and coal industries, and from the politicians who depend on their support. In the April 20 episode of “Cosmos” Tyson told the tale of Clair Patterson, a researcher at the California Institute of Technology. Patterson was the scientist who came up with what scientists now agree is the age of the Earth (4.5 billion years old, much older than the creationist belief). Patterson also discovered that lead was all around us, and that it threatened to kill us. Patterson’s campaign against leaded gasoline, which placed him on the top of the lead and oil companies’ enemies list, eventually led to the elimination of lead from our vehicles and from the environment. Patterson’s story, as told in “Cosmos” teaches us that, sometimes, the good guys actually win, and that a good show like “Cosmos” can exist on commercial television. soflagaynews //

IMPORTANT PATIENT INFORMATION PREZISTA (pre-ZIS-ta) (darunavir) Oral Suspension PREZISTA (pre-ZIS-ta) (darunavir) Tablets Read this Patient Information before you start taking PREZISTA and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This information does not take the place of talking to your healthcare provider about your medical condition or your treatment. Also read the Patient Information leaflet for NORVIR® (ritonavir). What is the most important information I should know about PREZISTA? • PREZISTA can interact with other medicines and cause serious side effects. It is important to know the medicines that should not be taken with PREZISTA. See the section “Who should not take PREZISTA?” • PREZISTA may cause liver problems. Some people taking PREZISTA in combination with NORVIR® (ritonavir) have developed liver problems which may be life-threatening. Your healthcare provider should do blood tests before and during your combination treatment with PREZISTA. If you have chronic hepatitis B or C infection, your healthcare provider should check your blood tests more often because you have an increased chance of developing liver problems. • Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of the below signs and symptoms of liver problems. • Dark (tea colored) urine • yellowing of your skin or whites of your eyes • pale colored stools (bowel movements) • nausea • vomiting • pain or tenderness on your right side below your ribs • loss of appetite PREZISTA may cause severe or life-threatening skin reactions or rash. Sometimes these skin reactions and skin rashes can become severe and require treatment in a hospital. You should call your healthcare provider immediately if you develop a rash. However, stop taking PREZISTA and ritonavir combination treatment and call your healthcare provider immediately if you develop any skin changes with symptoms below: • fever • tiredness • muscle or joint pain • blisters or skin lesions • mouth sores or ulcers • red or inflamed eyes, like “pink eye” (conjunctivitis) Rash occurred more often in people taking PREZISTA and raltegravir together than with either drug separately, but was generally mild. See “What are the possible side effects of PREZISTA?” for more information about side effects. What is PREZISTA? PREZISTA is a prescription anti-HIV medicine used with ritonavir and other anti-HIV medicines to treat adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection. PREZISTA is a type of anti-HIV medicine called a protease inhibitor. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). When used with other HIV medicines, PREZISTA may help to reduce the amount of HIV in your blood (called “viral load”). PREZISTA may also help to increase the number of white blood cells called CD4 (T) cell which help fight off other infections. Reducing the amount of HIV and increasing the CD4 (T) cell count may improve your immune system. This may reduce your risk of death or infections that can happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections). PREZISTA does not cure HIV infection or AIDS and you may continue to experience illnesses associated with HIV-1 infection, including opportunistic infections. You should remain under the care of a doctor when using PREZISTA. Avoid doing things that can spread HIV-1 infection. • Do not share needles or other injection equipment. • Do not share personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them, like toothbrushes and razor blades. • Do not have any kind of sex without protection. Always practice safe sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom to lower the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Ask your healthcare provider if you have any questions on how to prevent passing HIV to other people.

opinion publisher’s editorial

Michael Sam – Let Him Play Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

This is not an editorial about sports, though it is about a football player. With the 249th selection of the 2014 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams chose a Defensive End from the University of Missouri, Michael Sam, the Southeastern conference player of the year. He made history. Now let him play football. First, they selected the first openly gay college athlete to enter the NFL draft. We know there have been many other gay players long before Michael Sam. Wisely or wrongly, none ever made their sexuality an issue. Sam did, and it cost him big time. Instead of being a logical fourth or fifth round selection, Sam almost did not get picked at all. He was rescued by St. Louis with 7 picks left on the board. It was agonizing to watch team after team, including the Dolphins, go down on the draft board to choose other lesser rated players at the same position. All of those teams, from Denver to the Jets to the ‘Fins, had made politically correct front office pronouncements that they would not let Sam’s open sexuality interfere with their selection process. Lies. They all did. Each football team, and indeed many more, let a superbly talented athlete with excellent credentials escape their grasp. They just did not want to deal with the hype and the homo. There is no other way to excuse it. SEC conference players who are standouts at their position do not go at the end of the seventh round — period. In fact, they are usually first round picks, though Sam does not have the physical characteristics to so qualify. But he has the character. Meanwhile, moments after his selection, Sam created a new national debate. He kissed, really kissed, his male partner. We loved it. The world hated it. It’s only OK for straight people to do that. Instantly, the Internet was flooded with homophobic remarks denouncing the ‘creepy’ behavior. Ironically, one of those came from another Dolphin player, who was promptly suspended and fined by the same management team that had themselves passed on his selection. The ‘Fins blew it. They could have made

history. It was bullying that embarrassed and nearly destroyed the Dolphins last season during their first legitimate chance at the playoffs in years. It would have been so courageous for them, of all teams, to select Sam. When they chose a different lesser-rated defensive lineman with the 240th pick, they not only embarrassed themselves, they also pissed me off. Meanwhile, in a stadium where half the fans appear as empty orange seats, a major marketing opportunity was lost. Outside of Johnny Manziel, the star A&M quarterback chosen by the Browns, guess whose jersey is nationally outselling every other? You guessed it. The very gay Michael Sam. The bottom line is that homophobia permeated the selection process of the NFL draft. Thanks to Don Sterling, we know that racism corrupts pro basketball with a plantation mentality apparently infecting at least certain owners. We may have come a long way in America. We have a longer way to go. This guy Sterling, interviewed on CNN this week by Anderson Cooper, is now a national joke. The bigger laugh is how did the NBA tolerate such a fool for so many years. He is 80 years old. You mean, we just discovered this guy’s sentiments? Next week, I will be reporting from the White House, where I will be going to celebrate the release of the new Harvey Milk stamp on Thursday for Harvey Milk Day. If you think the Michael Sam kiss drew a hateful response on the Internet, wait till you hear the deafening and demeaning jokes about the release of the stamp. They will make Duck Dynasty seem like Mickey Mouse. It’s going to happen because hate, harm and hurt still influence and shape our lives. It’s going to happen because racism, sexism, homophobia, and more isms still populate and poison America, especially talk radio. For gay Americans, we can beat it back by standing our ground, fighting on, and not letting wrong win. Go buy a Sam Jersey and Milk stamp. Let’s show the world we count.

Becoming the Country We Criticize

Lately ‘freedom of religion’ has become nothing more than ‘freedom to hate’ Dennis Jozefowicz

I don’t write opinion pieces very often. They’re usually not worth the headaches. But this trend in “religious freedom” bills around the country is really disturbing to me. I’m a gay man, I’m a Lutheran and I believe in God. I‘m gay because God made me this way; it’s NOT a choice. I even wear a necklace with a cross on it. There, I said it. The U.S. constitution allows me to worship as I please; that’s called freedom of religion. It also allows me to “express” that belief by telling you; that’s freedom of speech. Just the same, you’re allowed to disagree with me and express that disagreement. That, too, is freedom of speech. What the Constitution doesn’t allow me to do is to force this belief on you. I am not allowed to “make” you do anything, or force any action against you because we don’t agree. But it seems that a lot of very far-right wing Christians, who are also business owners, believe they are allowed to do so using discrimination. This is where the line is already clearly drawn, but nobody seems to be paying attention to it. You are not a church. You are not a religion. You’re a business. And when you have a business you can’t just choose who to serve or not serve. Though you may say “I don’t want to do business with you because you are gay”, would this not fall under sexual (gender) discrimination anyway? You are discriminating because you have two males, or two females, not one male and one female clearly choosing genders to your liking. This is clearly moving us back to pre-1964, when the Civil Rights Act was passed to

end race-based discrimination. The government allowing such discrimination under the false banner of “freedom of religion” also breaks the separation of church and state. Are we becoming a country where we create laws to suppress the freedoms we stand for because it’s convenient to use your church to express your hate? It’s clearly not what Jesus would do. I think he’s a little more worried about the suffering, the sick and the poor. At least that’s what religion taught me. Am I worshipping incorrectly too? I think I’ll start disliking people, and use my church to validate my hatred toward people who like bacon. It’s in the Bible, you know! What about women who aren’t virgins? Or anyone who’s divorced? Atheists, agnostics… don’t come to my store, either! You’re all a bunch of heathens! Now don’t I sound ridiculous? Yes, of course I do. If we continue to allow such things to happen, and create laws that make discrimination the norm, we are no better than the Middle Eastern, African and Asian countries we criticize for doing the same things. Even worse, some countries in these regions kill people for going against “state religion.” As of May 1, the country of Brunei adopted Sharia law, which punishes homosexuality with stoning by death. When do we become that? When do we go so far backwards and start lynching again? When do we become terrorists in the name of a religion? When do we become the country we criticize? soflagaynews //

Guard Your Identity; Because No One Else Will

Tips on how to protect yourself from identity thieves Ric Reily There’s perhaps no more insidious an attack than identity theft. Though many crimes are more physically traumatizing, identity theft attacks are done quietly. And often the damage is done before you’re even aware of the crime. Your life, as you know it, can be fundamentally changed. From the Federal Trade Commission’s website: Identity theft happens when someone steals your personal information and uses it without your permission. It’s a serious crime that can wreak havoc on your finances, credit history and reputation and can take time, money and patience to resolve. Identity theft comes in many forms. Fraudulently filed tax returns, where the refund goes to the thief; unknown credit card accounts where bills and notices don’t come to your address; even a driver’s license in your name with another’s photo used to avoid insurance payments and also to provide identity for bank loans and government benefits. In fact, many federal taxpayers’ refunds were delayed because they had been stolen by identity thieves. One-fifth of those victims were from Florida, with South Florida being particularly lucrative for identity thieves in general. Thieves will also use your identity to take out bank loans in your name or make huge purchases using your lines of credit. It can happen to anyone and you’re not immune. Law-enforcement attention to the problem is increasing, but can do only so much. We are each individually responsible for our protecting our identities and taking preemptive steps can lessen the chance of falling victim. For protection, be certain you have your wallet or purse at all times; make a point of never putting your wallet down while accessing it at a store. Holding it in your hand reminds you to retrieve your credit card before leaving and can be a simple, yet effective safeguard against what can often be an almost instantaneous crime. A friend once lost his wallet in a movie theater and upon discovering it while getting in to his car, immediately called his credit card company to report the loss: the lost card was already in use. Don’t carry your entire life in your purse or wallet. In the event that you lose it you still have items at home available for use while the situation is resolved. Another option is to carry

SouthFloridaGayNews

a “walking wallet” containing perhaps one credit card and only the amount of cash you know is necessary for your outing. Don’t provide personal information to anyone who contacts you; even when the call is to verify information — tell them they already have it. When you call only verify information you already gave them. Particularly important to safeguard is your Social Security number; there is seldom a reason to carry your Social Security card with you: leave it home in a safe place. Even when accessing your credit report (as you should do three times each year when you get your one free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus) be sure to optout of credit marketing offers. This stops the ceaseless flow of credit card offers that arrive in your mailbox daily, a flow that’s often fertile fodder for identity thieves. If an offer does arrive, destroy it, and all other personal information prior to disposing of it; a paper shredder is invaluable. Recently an acquaintance shared a photo of her new state issued identity card on Facebook; that is a definite no no. Remember the old adage ‘A stitch in time saves nine’? It’s perhaps never more true than in the case of maintaining your identity. Taking simple precautions now makes the opportunity smaller and the task more difficult for the identity thief. After all, you don’t have to stop him from being an identity thief; you just have to make the task difficult enough to seem not worth the effort.

“Lost and Found in Johannesburg: A Memoir” Terri Schlichenmeyer

Turn left. You used to need a map to know that info but these days a voice from a screen tells you where to go on your trip. It’s easy and fairly reliable; so who would want to go back to wrestling with a map, or wondering if they’re making a wrong turn? Meet Mark Gevisser. No, you haven’t used a paper map in eons but author Mark Gevisser has, and his maps show a city under change. In the new book “Lost and Found in Johannesburg,” you might see how. Growing up in South Africa, Gevisser was obsessed with maps; in particular, an archaic book of streets and neighborhoods that helped him play a pretend-game with himself. It wasn’t until many years later that Gevisser realized that segments of his hometown of Johannesburg were missing from the book — specifically the neighborhoods where the city’s Black population lived. Though his Jewish ancestors had endured discrimination when they immigrated to South Africa a century ago, Gevisser was born into a life of privilege and was mostly insulated from the Johannesburg filled with poverty and Black faces. And yet, his family had Black servants that lived, by law, in small houses behind the main home. Eventually, though, it dawned on Gevisser that the racial system in “Joburg” was flawed. Perhaps he noticed because he had been immersed in a culture of activism, in which whites ignored rules and regularly mingled with blacks. Maybe it was because he was a world traveler and had gone to school in America at Yale, or because apartheid was beginning to unravel back home. Or maybe it was because he was gay and could in some way relate to divisiveness on any level. Today, Gevisser lives in Johannesburg, a city that’s surprisingly progressive on issues of sexuality. He’s married to a man he calls “C,” who is of Indian descent. You would think these factors — an award-winning white, Jewish gay writer married to a man of a different race in a city that relatively recently rejected apartheid — would make for a very fascinating book. But alas, “Lost and Found in Johannesburg” is anything but exciting. First, it takes 80 plus pages to get past chapters on infinitesimally-detailed streets and neighborhoods, and a litany of author Mark Gevisser’s immigrant ancestors – neither of which will mean a thing to anyone who’s not related or in Johannesburg. I lost both interest and patience, but I sallied forth anyhow.

Admittedly, that led me to small pockets of interest — life as a gay South African, brief accounts of apartheid and racism, heartbreaking stories, and a breathless but disturbing tale of robbery — but they were buried beneath passages of esoteric literature and dozens of names, all of which become a blur. Yes, I suppose that if you’ve lived in South Africa for a good length of time, or if you’re interested in the detailed genealogy of total strangers, you could certainly give this book a try. Most people though that read “Lost and Found in Johannesburg,” will want to turn left and keep on going.

lifestyle gay car geek 2014 Porsche Boxster — Or as I like to call it, the Cayman Roadster Steve Siler Everyone I know loves the yummy Porsche Cayman. And nearly everyone I know loves convertibles, especially in sunny South Florida. So it’s confounding to me that people do not love the Cayman roadster. It’s probably because — and only because — it’s called the Boxster, which was once regarded as the “poor man’s Carrera.” And no one — especially we image conscious gays — want to be seen in a poor man’s anything. Thing is, over the last 15 years, the Boxster has grown into its own extraordinary performance machine that anyone should be proud to own — even in base form, like the model that just spent the week in my hands. With a delightful manual transmission and but a few options, including navigation, Bose audio, 19-inch wheels and body color seat belts, the Boxster is simple, uncomplicated and visceral, yet doesn’t feel

like a stripped down Daihatsu. You gotta shift a lot to squeeze performance out of the somewhat modest six-cylinder engine, but that’s OK, since it sounds fabulous. Besides, there’s something innately satisfying about working a stick… ahem. And like every Porsche, the Boxster handles with gorgeous precision. Add in the practicality of two trunks, and the Boxster is near perfect. Except, that is, for its name.

feature interview

Prop 8 Plaintiffs Set to Wed June 28 marks the historic decision’s one-year anniversary David-Elijah Nahmod Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo call themselves “regular guys who happen to love each other.” That they love each other is clear, but their legal fight to ensure their union is recognized suggests they’re more than just devoted partners. Some may even call them crusaders. Katami and Zarrillo, fed up with the fact that their committed, loving relationship was viewed as second class by the state of California and the U.S. Government, filed a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the voter approved ballot measure which outlawed same-sex marriage in California. The suit was eventually heard by the Supreme Court. The SCOTUS ruling ultimately overturned Proposition 8, reinstatuing marriage equality in California. This led to a flurry of rulings in numerous other states in which federal judges ruled that bans on same-sex marriage were unconstitutional. Even conservative strongholds like Utah and Oklahoma saw such rulings. It’s now an accepted fact that marriage equality will eventually be recognized in all fifty states. On June 28, Katami and Zarrillo will celebrate their wedding at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Ted Olson and David Boies, the attorneys who argued the couple’s case before the Supreme Court, will officiate. The date was chosen because it marks the one year anniversary of the SCOTUS ruling on Prop 8. Katami and Zarrillo chatted with SFGN about their post ruling thoughts. When your lawsuit was announced, many in the community who later supported you tried to talk you out of it. Why do you think people were initially opposed to your willingness to fight for marriage equality?

Katami: It’s understood there was going to be skepticism. Ours was the first such federal suit. It was a bold move. It was going to see if we could move the movement forward. It was moving too slowly and was looking like a decades long struggle. We took a lot of heat and were called troublemakers. But we didn’t want to wait until we were 80 or 90. Zarrillo: I’m really excited. It’s important to get married and to make a point.

Did you expect gay marriage bans across the country to fall as a result of your lawsuit?

Katami: What’s happening across the U.S. is a tipping point. These rulings say that discrimination against Americans is unconstitutional. If you strip away the marriage question and ask about equality, then people say yes. You can have your own beliefs in your home or community, but we have to affirm equality. Did you see the recent wedding between gay couple Sonny and Will on “Days of Our Lives?”

Zarrillo: We met Guy Wilson (Will) at the GLAAD Media Awards. We talked about how impactful that [particular] storyline was. Many have compared your case to Loving V. Virginia, the 1967 SCOTUS ruling which lifted state bans on interracial marriage.

Katami: Loving V. Virginia was part of our inspiration, part of our strategy. It was referenced many times throughout court proceedings. There were many parallels AND many analogies in both rulings.

K

atami and Zarrillo attend the GLAAD Media Awards

Zarrillo: And now people are telling their own stories, which are based in marriage but rooted in equality.

Photo: GLAAD

Certain self-described “queer radicals” have spoken out against marriage equality, because they think it’s “bourgeois” and they don’t want to emulate straight people. What’s your response to them?

Katami: When you see the people whose lives have been destroyed, it’s not assimilation, it’s protection when you can marry. Zarrillo: We have to keep moving forward. If they don’t want to take advantage of these rights, that’s up to them. So what’s next for you guys after your honeymoon?

Katami: You cannot read the news without hearing about who criminalized homosexuality. We have to make sure that everyone around the world is protected and make sure their voices are heard.

outeats Special Advertising Section SoBe Wine & Food Festival Founder Releases New Cookbook J.W. Arnold Lee Brian Schrager has a guilty pleasure. The founder of the Food Network South Beach and New York Wine and Food Festivals has plenty of opportunities to savor the latest fancy creations from the biggest stars of the culinary world. But, if it’s on the menu, he almost always goes with the tried and true — fried chicken — “whether I’m eating at a white tablecloth restaurant or a greasy spoon diner,” Schrager admitted. Now, Schrager has written the definitive guide to his favorite dish, “Fried & True: More than 50 Recipes for America’s Best Fried Chicken and Sides,” available next week at leading bookstores from Clarkson Potter Publishers. Brined, battered, double battered, bathed in buttermilk and slathered in secret sauce. Everyone loves fried chicken and there are countless ways to prepare this distinctly American staple. How did Schrager become the expert on fried chicken? “Sadly enough from eating so much,” the longtime Miami Beach resident said. The book includes more than 50 recipes, including many from his Food Network festival friends Tyler Florence, Paula Deen and Andrew Carmellini. The idea for the cookbook, his second, actually came up during an event at the 2013 South Beach festival hosted by country singer Trisha Yearwood. “We were sitting around talking about how much we both loved the incredible fried

chicken and my publisher, who was also her publisher, was nearby and said I should do a book,” Schrager said. After writing the “Food Network South Beach Wine and Food Festival Cookbook” nearly four years earlier, Schrager swore he would not take on another book project, but he jumped on it, completing the manuscript in a matter of months. Schrager started with his friends’ recipes and even hit the road to sample some legendary recipes across the country. The result was even more referrals. “We’d be eating in one restaurant and then somebody — sometimes a server or a cook — would tell us about another place to try,” he recalled, noting their list of unique recipes seemed to grow exponentially through the process. The result was an eclectic collection of recipes that highlighted regional tastes like Cajun and Southwestern seasonings from local restaurants, a fiery General Tso’s Chinese fried chicken and gourmet versions from haute cuisine chefs including Jacques Pepin. He also included cooking tips in the book, as well as a collection of his favorite side dishes, such as a savory tomato pie topped with crumbled Ritz crackers and a cheesy hashbrown casserole recipe from the Loveless Café in Nashville. Schrager’s favorites? “Well, that’s like asking a parent about their favorite child,” he said with a chuckle as he headed off to do other media interviews about the book. For now, Schrager continues preparations for the New York festival this fall, as well as planning for next winter’s South Beach event, in addition to his duties as vice president for special events at Southern Wine & Spirits. He doesn’t have plans for another book, at least for now. He concluded, “I love what I do and I do what I love.”

Paula Deen’s Best Ever Southern Fried Chicken Before I actually met Paula Deen in person, I fell in love with the heavenly fried chicken (and the cheese biscuits) she served at The Lady & Sons, her Savannah restaurant. Looking at the long line of people waiting outside the front door, I wondered what all the fuss was about ... then understood after just one bite why Paula was — and is — the reigning queen of Southern cooking. Let the record stand; it was her fried chicken — simply dipped, dredged and fried — that first caught my eye. The combination of eggs and self-rising flour promises extra-airy, crispy results that will be the star of your next dinner party or picnic. • 3 large eggs • 2 cups self-rising flour • 1 teaspoon black pepper, plus more for seasoning • Sea salt • 1 whole chicken, rinsed, patted dry, and cut into 10 pieces • 4 cups solid vegetable shortening (such as Crisco), for deep-frying – Serves 4

1

. Make the dredge:

In a shallow bowl, lightly beat the eggs with 1/3 cup water. In a separate shallow bowl, combine the flour and the black pepper. Set aside.

2

. Dredge the chicken:

Lightly season the chicken all over with salt and black pepper. Dip the chicken pieces in the egg mixture, letting any excess drip off, and then coat well in the flour mixture.

3

. Fry the chicken:

In a large (at least 12-inch diameter), high-sided skillet, heat the shortening to 350°F and until it has melted to a liquid of 2 inches deep in the skillet. Slip the chicken into the melted fat (the fat should just come up over the chicken), and cook the pieces until browned and crisp, 13- 14 minutes for the dark meat and 9 to 10 minutes for the white meat. Drain on paper towels and serve warm or at room temperature. “Fried & True,” Clarkson Potter. Used with permission. soflagaynews //

Buycott: A Great Socially Conscious Shopping App Dennis Jozefowicz

These days, everyone tries to pretend that they are socially aware, and claim that they shop for products that don’t go against their beliefs. But let’s face it. It’s almost impossible to keep track of the thousands of products on the shelves at the local store. It’s hard to keep track which brand goes with which company. Should I buy it, or find an alternative? Enter Buycott, a combination of a website and an app that makes it as simple as scanning a barcode to see if it a product is right for your social conscience. The website allows you to enter companies and products based on their positions on social issues. You can also create shopping lists for other users to follow. The app version takes a little time to set up. Once you download it to your smart phone, you pick which causes Boycott should track. For example, I joined the “HRC buying

guide – Workplace Equality.” I also use the “Boycott Koch Industries.” These two filters alone produced thousands of products for and against my views. Now when I use the app’s barcode scanner, it tells me either “You are avoiding this product,” “You’re supporting this product,” or “No personal conflicts,” with an explanation of the pro or con results. If the product isn’t in the database, you can voluntarily add it. The database where users enter “causes” is a little sloppy with fringe entries but with a little effort, this is a great tool to help you see what causes your dollars are supporting. I found it quite educational; who knew so many products were made by so few companies? It has definitely made me a smarter shopper. Buycott is available for Android and iPhone. Turn Your Retirement “Vision Into Reality” Darcy Beeman

Retirement can be an exciting, active time of your life. But if you’re going to get the full benefits from your retirement years — which could last two, or even three, decades — you’ll need to have a vision for what you want to do. And to transform this vision into reality, you’ll need to take a “holistic” approach — one that involves a financial strategy, clear communications with family members and an awareness of the challenges that may stand in your way. To articulate and achieve your vision, ask yourself a series of questions, such as the following: • What do I want to do? When you retire, do you plan on traveling around the world? Purchasing a vacation home? Pursuing your hobbies? Or maybe you’re even thinking of opening a small business. Clearly, you have many options — and you’ll need to be aware that some choices are going to be more costly than others. If you can identify how you want to spend your retirement years and then put a “price tag” on your goal — or at least come up with a pretty good estimate of how much money you’ll need each year — you can then create an appropriate investment strategy. Such a strategy will include both your need for growth — during your pre-retirement and retirement years — and your need for income, especially during your retirement years. Your investment strategy will also need to be based on your risk tolerance, family situation and time horizon — how many years you have until your retirement. • What “roadblocks” might I encounter? As you work to achieve your retirement vision, you may well encounter some “roadblocks” along the way. One significant roadblock is the amount of health care expenses you

might face during retirement. Many people think Medicare will cover everything, but that’s not the case — in fact, you could easily spend a few thousand dollars each year, out of pocket, for health care costs. And since these costs typically rise as you move further into retirement, you’ll need a reasonable portion of your assets to be allocated to investments with the potential for rising income. Even beyond normal health care costs, though, you’ll need to be aware that you could eventually need some type of long-term care, such as a stay in a nursing home or assistance from a home health aide. These costs can be enormous; to cope with them, you need to prepare well ahead of time, so you may want to consult with your financial advisor for possible solutions. • How can I protect my family? Your retirement vision can’t just involve yourself, or even just yourself and your partner. To fully enjoy your retirement years, you’ll want to know that you are helping to protect your grown children from financial and emotional burdens that could fall on them should you become incapacitated in some way. Among the steps you might consider taking is establishing a durable power of attorney, which allows you to appoint an agent to manage your financial affairs, make health care decisions or conduct other business for you during your incapacitation. Consult with your legal advisor about creating a durable power of attorney. You will find that having your retirement vision come to fruition can be a great feeling. So, do whatever it takes to make it happen. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. •

RuPaul’s Drag Race Says Farewell to Ben DeLaCreme Michael Cook

June 21st, 2014 | 6pm - 10pm Hilton Downtown 1601 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami

Morgan Stanley Business Person of the Year Award Craig Smith, Source Events

AT&T Non-Profit of the Year Award National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

TICKETS: $200 Individual or $2,000 Table of Ten RSVP: at GayBizGala.com; 305-673-4440 Sponsors:

Ben DeLaCreme was, as she once called herself, “terminally delightful” on this season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” With a retro vibe and polished looks, she was one of the queens to beat. Sadly, she went home during a challenge against her nemesis Darienne Lake. DeLaCreme sat down with SFGN to chat how it felt to go home so close to the crown, her portrayal as a “character queen” and her big plans for hitting the stage!

How did you conjure up a name as clever as “Ben DeLaCreme”?

Well it’s a play on crème de la crème, and my boy name is Ben. I really consider Ben DeLaCreme to be the best of Ben kind of thing!

You were a seasoned and experienced queen, with many fans thinking you may take the crown this season.

I definitely wanted to go further. There were two times that I was up for elimination. The first time I said to myself “no I’m not ready to go yet”! The second time felt like I’d had a really amazing experience. I’d gotten to show people who I was and what I did. Those girls were all so incredibly talented, and I really felt like everyone was doing their version of drag to the best of their ability. I was really OK leaving, but in some ways I wish I could have gone further.

TM

Some of the other girls thought the editing portrayed them differently than they actually were. How do you feel you were portrayed?

I didn’t see anything that felt not like me really. I think that in some ways I wasn’t always bringing the drama, and as a character queen I do what I do on stage, and when I’m not in drag on stage I’m definitely a little more subdued. I do feel that who I was portrayed as was pretty accurate, though.

Some fans and other contestants have been vocal about your portraying a character instead of being genuine. Do you feel that criticism was fair?

I find it to be a moot [point]. I’m a character queen; when I’m in drag, I’m portraying a character. There is a long tradition of that in drag and for good reason. It’s not ill considered and not disingenuous either. I’ve heard people say that I was trying too hard to be nice, or trying to be upbeat all of the time. My challenge to that is, what about all the queens that were putting on being bitchy and they’re not getting scrutinized for that. I don’t see anything wrong with trying to be a little more upbeat than you normally would be.

What are you favorite and least favorite parts of the “Drag Race” experience?

30

// 5.14.2014 // SFGN.com //

soflagaynews //

SouthFloridaGayNews

My favorite part would be “Snatch Game” that was a blast! So many of the girls in that challenge were so good. We really were bouncing off of each other. Least favorite, that’s really easy, after I almost went home during a lip synch with Darienne (Lake), I was in quite a state for a little while. It really shook my confidence, and took me a little while to claw my way back. It was like getting fired from your job and then being told to come right back and go back to work!

Who are you pulling for to take the crown now?

That’s a tough one! At the point we were at with the five of us, I was happy because all of us were doing such different styles of drag. There’s a lot of different way to manifest this art form, and I think the girls left are really doing an amazing job at what they do. On a personal level, Darienne and I have certainly had our moments, but we all get along really well, and I think at this point everyone wins. Everyone’s career will be really good.

You’re doing shows at the Laurie Beechman Theatre from May 21 to May 23. Among them are “Ben DeLaCreme – Terminally Delightful” and “Hocus Pocus” with Peaches Christ and last year’s “Drag Race” winner Jinkx Monsoon. What do you think you want to do next post “Drag Race”?

You know, the stage is really what I love. For me, this is a really amazing opportunity to do what I’ve been doing, but on a bigger level. I’ve been working in this medium for 11 years, and now it won’t be a decision about the electricity being kept on. I’ve written and directed a lot of shows in Seattle, and I’m excited to keep doing that, but on a much bigger scale and devoting much more energy to it. Visit BenDeLaCreme.com for more information.
