President to Sign LGBT Protection Order President Barrack Obama would sign an executive order that would prohibit federal contractors from discriminating against employees based on sexual orientation or gender identity, a White House official said Monday. The decision follows years of LGBT groups pressing for more rights. The Senate originally passed the bill, but it stalled in the Republican-led House. The bill will reach over one million LGBT workers across the country, making it the single largest

expansion of LGBT workplace protection in the United States’ history, according to ThinkProgress. The executive order being drafted by the president’s staff would “build upon existing protections, which generally prohibit federal contractors and subcontractors from discriminating in employment decisions on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin,” according to the White House official. news highlight Gay Politician Attacked with Acid at Vienna Pride Event Nicole Wiesenthal Pride Month, usually a positive, exciting time for most LGBT citizens, became a nightmare for Austria’s first openly-gay politician when she was attacked at the Vienna Pride event. An unknown assailant sprayed butyric acid at Ulrike Lunacek, leader of the Austrian Greens’ delegation to the European Parliament, as she was giving an interview, according to The Local. Fortunately neither Lunacek nor her team was injured from the attack. The acid damaged clothing and camera equipment. According to police spokeswoman Barbara Riehs, the acid caused almost $68,000 worth of damage in technological equipment. Lunacek spoke of what happened to her at the end of the event at Vienna’s City Hall. “Never before has there been an attack at Rainbow Parade,” Lunacek said. “These kinds of isolated cases showed that the fight for tolerance, acceptance and respect in Austria are not over. People who spread fear and hate need to be opposed.”

Butyric acid, according to LGBTQ Nation, is an oily, toxic, colorless chemical made predominantly of fats with rancid smell, and is the primary cause of the foul smell associated with human vomit and flatulence. It is commonly added to stink bombs. The 2014 Pride Parade also happened to be the largest to date.

Arkansas Pastor is New Southern Baptist President

An Arkansas megachurch pastor was elected Tuesday to lead the country’s Southern Baptists as the conservative denomination tries to turn around declining membership, church attendance and baptisms and faces increasing conflict with mainstream culture, especially over its conviction that gay sex is immoral. Later on Tuesday, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination is scheduled to consider a resolution opposing the idea that gender identity can be different from a person’s biological sex. And a motion made from the floor by one Southern Baptist Convention delegate asks the group to discipline a Southern California church that has stopped preaching against homosexuality. In nominating the Rev. Ronnie Floyd for president, the powerful head of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, the Rev. Albert Mohler, told the crowd of 5,000 meeting in Baltimore, “The nation is embracing a horrifying

aitress Fired After Using Homophobic Slur on Receipt

A receipt ruined a trans woman’s night out with friends at the hookah bar Bistro 18 in Washington. The waitress addressed the group as “gay bitches” on the receipt, according to PinkNews. The transgender woman, Amira Gray, who was with eight friends, two of whom were gay men, joined with Lambda Legal, a New York-based LGBT litigation group, to file a discrimination complaint against the restaurant, according to Pink News. The manager of the restaurant said he immediately fired the waitress for writing the slur and apologized, according to gay blogger Bil Browning of the Bilerico Project. A statement was released from Bistro18 confirming the waitress had been fired. The statement read: “The management at Bistro18 took extreme and immediate measures in dealing with the situation. The employee was fired that night and Ms. Gray received an apology from the employee and the management as well as her check was waived to express the apology. “Bistro18 does not and will not tolerate any discrimination in the business as it has been hosting customers and employing regardless to race, colour, gender, sexual orientation, and national of origin.” Still, Lambda Legal and Gray continue to press charges against the business. Prominent gay activists like Deacon Maccubbin, found and owner of D.C.’s now closed Lamba Rising bookstore, and Rick Rosendall, president of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, have stated they side with the accused party, according to the Washington Blade. Both said Bistro18 should not be held accountable for a single employee’s actions, especially when the manager quickly acted to rectify what she had done.

ldest Orlando-Area Synagogue OKs Performing Same-Sex Unions

Congregation Ohev Shalom, the oldest synagogue in the Central Florida area, will now perform and recognize same-sex unions. The synagogue’s Executive Board made the decision unanimously with the full support of the Board of Trustees of Congregation Shalom in Maitland, Fla. “I anticipated there might be a number of people that would see this as a turning wave from being a traditional congregation,” Senior Rabbi Aaron Rubinger said. However, he said not a single congregation member had

reservations during the process leading up to the approval of same-sex unions. While in Florida there is a ban on recognizing same-sex marriages and civil unions, the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards adopted a ruling in 2006 which normalized the status of LGBT individuals. A follow-up ruling introduced rituals and documents for same-sex couples within Conservative Judaism. “I think there’s a perception out there that the [Jewish] Conservative movement really doesn’t have a place for the LGBT community,” Rabbi Rubinger said. “But we are indeed one of the first in Florida – and even throughout the country – that has adopted this type of policy.” Before, the rabbis of the congregation could perform unions outside the synagogue, but now they can also be performed inside and allow for recognition of civil unions that have been already performed. Rabbi Rubinger hopes it allows for LGBT members of the Jewish community and his congregation to find a place where they can feel wanted and allow them to explore their spiritual side. The series hopes to counteract the ignorance that drives trans-phobic discrimination by putting a human face on the transgender community, according to the press release. The film also asks viewers to consider the gender binary of male and female, and challenges their notions of what it means to be one or the other. “With Just Gender, we finally have a film that shares more than just one or two personal stories about transgender life,” said Robert Boo, Executive Director of Fort Lauderdale’s Pride Center. “This film covers so much that is essential to understand

ransgender Woman Escapes 2-Year Captivity as Sex Slave in Louisiana

A Minnesota transgender woman was freed Saturday after spending two-years in captivity as a sex slave for a trio in Louisiana. ABC-affiliate station KACT-TV reports. According to an assistant town marshal for Natchitoches, La., the victim was found Saturday night near an intersection with a logging chain wrapped around her body. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and was treated for multiple lacerations and bruises and the logging chain had to be removed by local firefighters. Natchitoches Sheriff Victor Jones Jr. said the incident is the most “sever and disturbing” human trafficking case he’d ever investigated. The three suspects, David Rodriguez Jr., 37, Christina Marie Harper, 39, and Ambre Tubbs Lomas, 39, turned themselves in last Wednesday. Investigators say the victim met Rodriguez and Harper on the Internet and agreed to move into the couple’s home. Rodriguez allegedly drove to the victim’s home, who lived outside of Louisiana, to help her with the move. But once the victim moved in, things went down hill as Rodriguez allegedly forced her to give him money and to give up her Harley Davidson motorcycle. He also reportedly registered the victim as a slave on a website. According to the victim, she was forced to do daily chores and sexual acts. She was also made to serve meals, take care of pets, install a swimming pool and yard work. If she didn’t, she was allegedly brutally disciplined by the trio. The victim says she was beaten, tased, doused with urine and had letters carved into her body. When the victim told the couple she wanted to leave, she was allegedly chained in the woods, fed once a day and given small amounts of water and urine to drink. She was able to escape and use one of the trio’s cars as a get away. She is now in protective custody and authorities are investigating the case. They’ve searched the home and seized 15 firearms, a stun gun, computers and digital video recording devices. From our media partner, Edge.

0,000 Party at Israel Gay Pride Parade, Area’s Biggest

(AP) Shirtless Israeli men, colorfully dressed drag queens and others partied Friday through central Tel Aviv as tens of thousands of people took part in the city’s annual gay pride parade, the largest event of its kind in the Middle East. Tel Aviv is one of the few places in the Middle East where gays feel free to walk hand-in-hand and kiss in public. The city has emerged as one of the world’s most gay-friendly travel destinations in recent years, in sharp contrast to the rest of the region. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said more than 80,000 people took part.

Pride Week in Israel

16th annual Tel Aviv Pride breaks records Sasha Razumikhin What started as a small parade over 15 years ago this past weekend drew more than 100,000 people — the Tel Aviv Gay Pride Parade in Israel. Most of it went down in Gan Meir, the location “transformed into a hub of all things pride. Hundreds of rainbow-colored balloons floated above the roads, streets were covered with stickers and fliers, and pop music blared from loudspeakers,” according to the Jerusalem Post. The 16th annual event was part of a week of celebration in Israel’s party capital, a perfect city for the occasion. Other notable parts of the city were also adorned appropriately, like Rabin Square, which according to the Post was “alight with rainbow-colored lights and flags, and streets were painted with the entire spectrum to reflect the city’s thriving LGBT culture. By Friday morning the seaside city was in full song.” By now, you probably want to see what it looked like, so here are nine photos from Israeli newspaper Ha’Aretz (here’s a taste

from one of the captions: “Drag queens and go-go dancers dance on a truck”). Like in pride weeks around the world, it’s more than just the festivities, which is exactly what Ha’Aretz claims in a piece about this year’s pride week: The Foreign Ministry estimates that 30,000 tourists will come to participate in the festivities. This time of year, it’s easy to see why Tel Aviv has been voted the Best Gay City in the world by American Airlines and GayCities. Still, Pride Week is more than the sum of its parties. Throughout the week, Dizengoff Center is hosting the Pride Culture Expo, featuring speeches, live music, activism, small businesses and other activities embracing the spirit of Pride Week. A big to-do is coming to the Jewish Agency—a group promoting people move to Israel— for appearing officially in the parade for the first time, according to the Times of Israel, after being “Spurred into action by a group of LGBT immigrants in Tel Aviv.” It’s

part of the agency’s “Coming Out, Coming Home” initiative. From the Times: Yahm Reichart, a Los Angeles native who moved to Israel seven years ago and came out within six months of his arrival, is one of the volunteers behind the movement. “Coming Out, Coming Home,” she says, is more than a support group. It’s a networking portal and a

slice of the familiar in a country were life can often feel strange. “It’s hard to meet people and there’s always language barriers and cultural barriers,” she says. “It just helps to have people in the same situation.” Did you attend Pride in Tel Aviv? We want to hear about your experience.

news local Long Term Couples Highlight of Stonewall Pride Parade Christiana Lilly

For young LGBT people, this June being the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall riots makes the gay rights movement seem like it’s been going on forever. However, for many LGBT couples in the community, their stories start way before. Mary Maguire and her wife, Jackie Emmett, have been a part of each other’s lives for 52 years. To celebrate their long-term love, as well as many others in the South Florida community, they’ll be participating in the Stonewall Pride parade on June 21. “At a time when there is so much movement on the marriage equality front, it’s especially meaningful to take a moment and celebrate couples whose commitment and example has provided significant influence for the societal shift on same sex marriage,” said David Jobin, executive director of the Stonewall National Museum & Archives. This is the third year that the Luminary Couples of South Florida have participated in the Stonewall Pride Parade — first riding in vintage cars, then in creative, themed floats. This year’s theme is anniversaries, and with their name being the luminaries, “we’re going to light that sucker up,” Maguire said. Originally, the luminaries were a group that brought together LGBT couples who have been together for 20 or more years. To include more couples, they lowered the threshold to 10 or more. “It’s important that everybody, both gay and straight, understand that gay couples can have solid relationships,” said Maguire, who has been with Emmett for 52 years this September. “I won’t tell you that we’ve never had an argument, or that either one of us

have ever lost their temper over anything.” Maguire met Emmett when the two were roommates at Naval boot camp in Great Lakes in 1962. Not only was it hard to be a woman in the military, being a gay woman in the military was a whole other story. Through their ups and downs — including Emmett marrying a man to please her family — last September, the two finally tied the knot in New Hampshire in a small ceremony. While they’ve been together for the longest, other couples in the group are not far behind, celebrating decades of unwavering devotion and love. With more states recognizing same-sex marriage, many of them have finally been able to make their relationship legal. “We’ve always shown respect for each other and you can’t get to these numbers of years unless you do just that,” Maguire said. The Stonewall Pride Parade is June 21 and starts at 7 p.m. The route starts at the south end of Wilton Drive at Fort Lauderdale High School, continuing up to Five Points at Dixie Highway. President Obama’s views on gay marriage have evolved, but what about those of the Fort Lauderdale City Commission? Commissioner Dean Trantalis had placed a resolution on Tuesday’s agenda for commissioners to vote on that supports marriage equality. Florida voters in 2008 approved a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, which is now being challenged in federal court. In the past, Mayor Jack Seiler has refused to sign the Mayors for Freedom to Marry statement, saying he supports civil unions but not gay marriage.

Smith founded an international travel company and event company that customizes cruises and exotic adventures for the LGBT community and their allies as well as being the founder of the Miami Beach Gay Pride Cruise. “The proceeds from the event fund Chamber programs and operations not covered by membership income,” Adkins said.

Each ticket purchased will include a chance to win a trip for two to the Caribbean Island of Curacao. The lucky grand prize raffle winner will enjoy their own private beach on the gay friendly island with a 4 night stay at the Floris Suite hotel. Also included with each ticket is a VIP Goodies bag, one bag will contain a $500 cash prize and five others will include $100 cash prizes. The event started as a simple restaurant dinner with 75 attendees. Thirteen years later it has grown to nearly 600 strong. Miami Heat point guard Norris Cole donated an autographed basketball, and Heat’s Chris “Birdman” Andersen provided a signed jersey for this year’s auction. Up for grabs will also be two tickets to the upcoming Erasure concert featuring their latest studio album “The Violet Flame.” The band will be kicking off their world tour at the Fillmore Miami Beach in September. The after party, dubbed Jackson Miracle will host performances by the winners of the LGBT Visitors Center Pink Flamingo Awards — featuring fan favorite Drag Queen Tiffany Fantasia and master-beat artist DJ Pride. Tickets include the grand buffet, complementary parking, VIP gift bag, Grand Raffle ticket and reserved seating. They start at $200 for individual tickets and tables of 10 can be purchased for $2,000. Visit www. GayBizGala.com for more information.

Condoms at the Cup Norm Kent

Reuters News has reported that Brazilian health officials handed out condoms to World Cup fans in Sao Paulo last Friday, taking advantage of the games and festivities in the city to test people for HIV. “We can’t miss an opportunity like this,” Ivone De Paula, told the news agency. De Paula is Sao Paulo state’s coordinator for sexually transmitted disease prevention. “The fact that it’s the Cup lightens the mood a bit. People say ‘Hey I’m going to watch the game, I’m having fun, why not get tested too?’” The program is part of the UNAIDS “Protect the Goal” HIV/AIDS prevention program. The initiative provides rapid HIV testing and counseling, as well as free condoms and emergency retroviral drugs. It’s also being offered in 11 other cities across Sao Paulo state where visiting World

Cup teams are based. While a giant screen displayed the Cameroon match against Mexico, hundreds of fans went in for testing De Paula stated that for many of them it “was the first time ever.” “I had no idea this was going to be here, I just came across it,” a middle-aged man who asked not to be identified told Reuters. “I wouldn’t know where to get tested otherwise, so this helps quite a lot.” The Special Advisor to the Executive Director of UNAIDS, Djibril Diallo, explained that the ‘Protect the Goal’ campaign is a global advocacy initiative, involving countries from all continents, including Africa. They hope to harness the power of sports around the 24 teams playing for the FIFA World Cup.

E-Pride

Classic LGBT authors features in pride e-books David-Elijah Nahmod “I read myself out of the closet,” says acclaimed gay author Christopher Bram. “I could explore that part of myself in books.” Bram’s most famous novel, Father of Frankenstein, became the Oscar winning film Gods and Monsters. Bram fictionalized the final days in the life of 1930s Hollywood filmmaker James Whale, who had injected a strong gay subtext in his classic chillers Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and The Old Dark House (1932). Whale’s refusal to stay in the closet played a role in his blacklist from the industry in the early 1940s. Bram is one of the authors featured in Authors With Pride, a selection of classic LGBT literature made available anew in e-book form. Offerings include Laura Z. Hobson’s groundbreaking novel Consenting Adult, first published in 1975. Hobson (19001986) penned the autobiographical tale as a remembrance of her own coming to terms with her gay son. The book was a best seller at a time when people “simply didn’t discuss such things”. Hobson often addressed topics that people didn’t want to hear about, as in her 1947 expose on anti-Semitism, Gentleman’s Agreement. Though Hobson was a straight woman, the vast majority of authors represented indeed identify as LGBT. Offerings include the trashy but fun novels of Harold Robbins, who’s tales of the rich and privileged often included titillating encounters with lesbianism and bisexuality. More serious and

important works include Martin Duberman’s Stonewall, a historical accounting of the riots that launched the equality movement. There’s also children’s books, such as Lights Out Shabbat, in which a young Jewish boy spends the Sabbath with his beloved Grandma, and her female partner. Some of the featured authors may surprise a few readers, like the 19th century children’s writer Louisa May Alcott (Little Women) and noted science fiction writer Issac Asimov. (were they gay? I guess you never know!) Selections span a variety of generations, genders and genres. There are gay Western adventures alongside works of serious literature and stories taken from LGBT history. You can peruse the many selections at www.openroadmedia.com/lgbt.

students can select the state they go to college in and view a list of scholarships offered in the state. Students should check their college’s website for specific LGBT scholarships that might not be listed on the website.. If all else fails, students can apply to the Point Foundation scholarships, which are available for all LGBT students enrolled at a college in the United States. While the chances of getting a scholarship may seem slim, it wouldn’t hurt to try. If you win you can upgrade from Cup Noodle to actual canned soup. Good luck!

Sheila E to Headline Wilton Manor’s Pride Anthony Lanni

This year Wilton Manor’s Pride may be one for the books, literally, as the festival attempts to organize the “longest line of dancing drag queens” where an anticipated 150 queens will march in all their glory to set a Guinness Book world record. That’s not all the buzz though, this year will feature headline act Grammy nominated international superstar Sheila E. Also to preform is Florida’s very own and season 3 “X-Factor” competitor Lillie McCould. The festival takes place Saturday June 21 along Wilton Drive from noon to 11 p.m. With three different stages, this family friendly event will include various LGBT community vendors, food trucks and a frozendrinks tent. This year’s Twilight Parade is set to kick off at 7 p.m. beginning on the South end of Wilton Drive near Fort Lauderdale High school, continuing up the drive to the Five Points intersection at Dixie Highway. Bleacher seating will be made available at various locations on the drive for parade spectators. The parade will feature its annual Parade Contest in two prize categories “Over the Top, Grand Prize Float” and “Best Walking Group.” Parade entry will begin at 4:30 p.m., last entry into the parade will be no later than 6:45 p.m.

This year mark’s the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which is often known at the starting point of the gay rights movement. It all started on the morning of June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher Street in New York City. As police stormed in and barred the doors, Deputy Inspector Seymour Pine announced “Police! We’re taking the place!” It was standard procedure that police would take men dressed as women into the rest room to check for gender identification and arrest those who were actually male. That night though bar patrons refused to comply with police. Bystanders who were witnessing the brutality of police, gathered outside the bar. Soon a crowd of 600 gays and supporting allies were rioting against police, and the riots that followed sparked a national campaign that would begin the gay rights movement. “No one outside the city knew about Stonewall until much after it was a paragraph in the New York papers, but it was the spark that started a fire,” recalled South Florida resident Michael Kaminski. “The NYC police raided gay bars back then, this was the first time anyone fought back.”

An Inside Look at Sheila E

Born in Oakland California, Sheila E was a rising young star of the Bay Area. Born to percussionist father Pete Escovedo, whom she attributes to being her biggest influence and role model. Sheila comes from a long line of musical talent, including Santana band mate Coke Escovdeo, singer songwriter uncle Alejandro Escovedo and salsa & Latin Jazz composer godfather Tito Puente. “I don’t look at my music as work. It’s a gift I’ve been able to share,” Sheila told SFGN. “Music is a source to communicate to many people.” Sheila who has been musical inclined since the age of 5 was selftaught. Track Star Sheila was training for the Olympics until she had the opportunity to really showcase her talent. At the age of 15 she had the opportunity to fill in as percussionist for Santana and two weeks later was on tour with the legendary band. Sheila made her recording debut with jazz bassist Alphonso Johnson in 1978. By her early 20’s she had preformed with the industries biggest stars, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and George Duke. By the 1980’s Sheila would go to collaborate with Prince on the Purple Rain recording sessions and produce hit songs

“The Belle of St. Mark,” “A Love Bizarre” and the Grammy nominated hit “The Glamorous Life.” Over the years Sheila was go on to work and preform with numerous artist, Phil Collins, Beyonce and Cyndi Lauper. After 12 years without a studio album release, Sheila recently released her seventh studio album titled “Icon.” The album has been described as a musical love letter that has something for everyone. Sheila also spoke of her soon to be released autobiography “The Beat of My Own Drum” adding “I’ve been so busy, I didn’t even realize it had been so long since my last album release. While writing my autobiography reflecting on music and my life, it added an incredible amount of inspiration to my album.” Sheila has not only been an active supporter of her LGBT fans but of the human race. “I don’t look at people differently. I don’t categorize everyone. I belong to everyone. We all love each other.”

Barcelona to Celebrate Pride

Two competing events once again divide the community Jordi Nicolás Soler

SFGN Spanish Correspondent

Barcelona’s Pride Parade countdown begins among a divided LGBT population. Unlike the rest of Spanish cities, Barcelona has two Gay Pride marches. The first LGBT demonstration in the Catalan capital was held in 1977, being one of its kind in the country. The event took place in the very middle of transition to democracy after dictator Francisco Franco’s death in 1975, still being an illegal and clandestine event, as laws banning homosexuality were not overturned until 1979. It was the first demonstration of what is known today as “Manifestació per l’Alliberament” (LGBT Liberation March), which has kept its traditional rebellious essence ever since, taking place annually on the closest Saturday to June 28, known as Comissió Unitària 28 de Juny. This year’s edition, to be held on June 28, will focus on fighting against HIV/AIDS stigma and the discrimination against HIV positive individuals within the Public Health System. However, a new PrideFest was introduced in Barcelona in 2009 called Pride Barcelona.

Organized by Acegal-Catalan association of LGBT focused companies — it’s a more festive and leisurely event. Besides a parade, it also includes a street fair and other activities. When the event was founded it divided the city’s LGBT community, splitting over which type of festival was more appropriate and representative regarding the actual day-to-day reality and needs of the community. The situation worsened in 2013, when both marches took place on the same day at the same time, making people decide which one to attend. Some LGBT organizations criticized Barcelona Pride due to its lack of political agenda. The same will happen this year, as the start times for both marches are 30 minutes a part. More than 250,000 people are expected to attend this year’s Barcelona Pride, which will be celebrating its sixth year, to be held at Av. Reina Maria Cristina. It will run from June 19 to June 29, with the main dates being June 28-30. Thirty LGBT associations will take part. The event is seeking to become the most relevant Pride

celebration throughout the Mediterranean. The LGBT Liberation March, will take place on June 28 starting at 6 p.m. running along Av. Parallel. A manifesto will be read at 8 p.m. Besides the Pride Parade itself, other highlights include cultural expositions, such as cinema and art, competitions like a heel and a Drag Queen race and workshops addressing both kids and adults, as well as music performances. Participation is free. Barcelona Pride expects an economic impact of approximately 16 million euros. Each year the pride festival attracts numerous foreign visitors including Americans, Germans and British. Many of them might come back for the Circuit Festival, another consolidated and famous LGBT event in Barcelona running August 6-17. That event is meant to be entirely for leisure and entertainment. More than 70,000 visitors are

expected, most of them (more than 80 percent) being foreigners. The LGBT Liberation March will also feature a manifesto and a party in pl. Universitat. Despite attempts to not overlap both parades, Barcelona’s LGBT community will be divided once more regarding which march to attend. Visit PrideBarcelona.org/en/ for more information.

LGBT Rights

Forward one day, backwards the next Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

Damn, it’s an astounding and incongruous world on the issue of human rights for the international LGBT community. A few years ago, Hillary Clinton gave an impassioned address on the importance of recognizing the rights of LGBT citizens across the globe. We published the entire text of her fantastic speech here in SFGN. Last week, the U.N. General Assembly selected Sam Kuesta, the Uganda minister to the U.N., as its new president. He is an avowed anti-gay extremist whose presence at that high post is offensive. Official Uganda policy allows for lifetime imprisonment of gay citizens. At the same time that we are celebrating the World Cup tour in Brazil, its announcers are heralding the state of Qatar, where the 2022 games will be played. Beautiful pictures of the spectacularly oil-rich country are being displayed on televisions worldwide. They are not showing, talking or telling anyone about how its gay citizens face five years mandatory imprisonment for sodomy. The experience with the World Cup evokes the memory of last year’s Russian Olympics. As the country and its church were drafting draconian laws and policies denying equal rights to its LGBT community, gay men and women were competing in Sochi. In eastern European countries, gay men and women are everyday facing persecution, prosecution, and physical attacks from emerging Neo-Nazi groups. Last month, the U.S. Postal Service released the Harvey Milk stamp. The Milk Foundation, guided by his nephew, Wilton Manors resident Stuart Milk, was even invited to speak to the European Union. Meanwhile, some family groups in America publicly announce they will not accept mail from envelopes that have the Harvey Milk postal stamp on them. And I thought Fred Phelps had died. This week, President Obama announced plans to sign an executive order forbidding companies that do business with the federal government from discriminating against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, fulfilling a goal that gay rights organizations have sought for years. Currently, no federal law bans discrimination against gay

and transgender individuals. Twentyone states, including California and Illinois, and the District of Columbia bar discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, but in the remaining 29 states, employers are free to fire, demote or otherwise discriminate against workers solely on the basis of sexual orientation. While the President moves forward, ENDA stalls in an immobilized and stagnating Congress, where hostility is the rule of the day. How can this be? How can it take so long? The city of Fort Lauderdale commission headed to a debate last night on a simple resolution for marriage equality without the guaranteed votes in the bag. Some time after this column gets written the votes will have been cast. But how, here in South Florida, in the epicenter of gay life in America, can there even be a debate? Walk down Wilton Drive in the Manors during the Stonewall celebration this weekend, and you will see men and women celebrating their lives as central figures in our community. We partake and participate in commerce and trade, play roles as legislators, commissioners, realtors, bankers, entrepreneurs, and so much more. How can a single city commissioner hesitate about supporting the right to marriage equality? You would think if it is good enough for over a half dozen federal court judges, it might be OK at city hall. Last week, SFGN helped sponsor an ArtsUnited exhibit for marriage equality at the Main Broward County Library in Fort Lauderdale. It runs all this month and celebrates same-sex marriages. Many of you do not realize this comes on the 30th anniversary of a Broward County Library mailroom clerk being fired from his job at that same library for having AIDS. The 1984 ACLU lawsuit claimed Broward County officials discriminated against Donald Fanus by firing him for having AIDS. Officials said they were concerned for the health of other employees and the public. According to the lawsuit, those officials had been clearly

news international

Condoms at the Cup

told that AIDS could not be transmitted from one person to another through casual office contact. We lived in a world where those fears were so real the county would ignore facts and live a lie. Those same kind of fears still cause citizens and city commissioners to battle marriage equality. By the way, the estate of Donald Fanus collected a settlement from the county, as did another county employee, management intern Todd Shuttlesworth, who was also wrongly and unjustly fired solely because he had AIDS. Gay couples living on 6th Street won’t stop straight couples from raising their kids on 8th street. Get over it, people. Get over the religion, the righteousness, and your indignation. Live and let live. This weekend, walk with pride up and down Wilton Drive. Walk with your shirt off, your vuvuzelas blaring, and your pride showing. Just don’t forget that while our road is smoother, our progress greater, our advances many, there are still potholes which need paving, people who need persuading. By the way, there was an African American gay man from Miami, Darryl Gales, confirmed as a federal judge this week by the U.S. Senate. Once, black men were slaves. Once, women could not vote. Forget for a moment that same-sex couples can still not marry everywhere. Once, black and white women could not marry. Once, gay men could go to jail in America for sodomy. Once, gay men could not serve in the military. Once, people with HIV could be thrown out of schools and their jobs. Once, a transgender person would never appear on the cover of TIME Magazine. Once, we lived in the shadows. Not anymore. Nevermore. Be who you are, and be proud of it.

There were many criticisms that not enough was done when the World Cup last met in South Africa in 2010. This year, UNAIDS said it would distribute at least 2 million condoms at World Cups venue. Even that was criticized, The President of Nigeria Football Supporters’ Club, Dr Rafiu Ladipo, said the UN gesture would barely meet fans’ demand for one day. Ladipo said that football fans coming to the World Cup would require a cache of about 62 million packs of condoms. “Are you kidding? Two million condoms will be exhausted in just a day. We must provide more for fans because we are going to Brazil without our wives

where we intend to spend on the average of 31 days,’’ he told ThisDayLive.com. Meanwhile, the UN representative Diallo expressed optimism that the ‘Protect the Goal’ Campaign was worthwhile, saying an “AIDS free generation for us means three things. We need to have zero new infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS related deaths.” Brazil has traditionally been one of the worldwide leaders for HIV testing, and its campaigns are a model for other countries. They conduct HIV and AIDS prevention campaigns during the Carnival holiday, which includes widespread advertising and condom distribution.

An Abnormal Heart Michael Weinstein

President AIDS Healthcare Foundation

It would seem to be quite strange that after all this time AIDS is still as urgent to me as it always was. Thirty-six million dead later, it still haunts me. I am a fossil with the engraving of the fallen leaves upon me. I lived though the worst of it and I still feel that it’s bad. I still know that 4,500 people die every day of AIDS. I am still angry that the world’s response is so bureaucratic and uncaring. I still think that there is something I can do about it. It still hurts my heart the way it did 33 years ago. Now, I travel the world inaugurating new programs. I administer a huge organization. Most importantly, now we have tools to fight this disease. People can live long, healthy lives with the virus. But, in so many other ways, nothing has changed. Stigma still trumps public health; people with HIV are still rejected by people they love; only a fraction of the people worldwide who need treatment are getting it; we still don’t tell the truth about how you get HIV and what you must do to prevent it. In fact, we minimize what it means to have HIV. I never saw the point in counting how many people I lost to AIDS. I refuse to contribute to building memorials until after it is all over. I plead guilty to being behind the times. AIDS is no longer ‘fashionable’ the way it was. It is now

considered to be in the pop a pill category — who can get worked up over that? I can and I do. The virus is as deadly as ever — we are just holding it back. We are more careless about contracting HIV then we have been in decades. And, if you dare to scream about it, you are still considered too extreme. The history of AIDS still has many chapters to be written. Who knows how the current period will fare: Will it be a temporary period of complacency? Will it be the time the whole effort stalled out? Did we have the will to see the fight through until the end? The younger generation does not necessarily want to hear our war stories and we can’t make them. But that is no excuse for not telling the truth. We are still flirting with extreme danger. We are not taking seriously enough what the consequences of our silence will be. So, I will continue to rain on the parade of complacency, when necessary. I will still be the fly in the ointment of bureaucratic indifference. Most importantly, I will continue fighting. AIDS is now, and will always be, a moral litmus test. If you truly love humanity you cannot turn your back on it. AIDS is a cry for acceptance and love. The future will tell us how that cry is ultimately answered.

column mcnaught’s notes

No Money, No Work, and You’re Old

Unemployed LGBT seniors face many obstacles Brian McNaught The dream is recurring. I’m in a panic because I don’t have a job, and I question if I’ve ever worked. I’m sure that I’m too old to find meaningful employment, but I need money. I eventually become conscious that I’m dreaming, and I remind myself that I’ve had a personally rewarding career, and that I don’t need to work. Perhaps the dream is prompted by my struggle with the idea of retirement, or having been fired for being gay at age 26, or almost always working for myself, or maybe it’s because it took many years before my father and mother accepted that educating others on LGBT issues was a real job. It’s a bad dream that takes me a while to shake. Yet, for many people my age and younger, there is no waking from the bad dream, and there is no shaking off the emotional toll it takes. Being unemployed, and needing money, are the most pressing issues of their lives. They fear running out of money before they die, and ending up being dependent on others to survive. The people who live these nightmares most often are older workers who, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, have watched the depletion of their savings, and the diminished value of their skills. They have either lost, or fear they soon will lose, their jobs because of profit loss, automation, or their inability to keep pace with information technology. If these unemployed older people are LGBT, their situation may feel more precarious. In addition to feeling less needed, they may also feel less wanted. If they’re closeted, they may be seen as lacking the fortitude to face the challenges of the ever-changing workplace. Closeted LGBT people, I suspect, are rarely unknown, and often disparaged as unable to lead.

24

// 6.18.2014 // SFGN.com //

If they’re out of the closet, they may fear that being out will be a factor in their not being kept or re-hired. Despite how many corporate promises are made about not discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, many people feel that the promise only counts in the war for talent when the gay or transgender employee is seen as exceptional in what they do. Additionally, most states allow for such workplace discrimination. If, indeed, your nest egg has been depleted because the value of your house has depreciated, you’ve had unexpected health care costs, or your pension was cut, you have no alternative but to find work. But what work? How does the 55-year-old gay man find work after his money-making “companion” dies, and leaves the bulk of his assets to his children and grandchildren? The single lesbian near retirement is not seen as being as needy of steady income as the man who has dependents. If she is let go in downsizing, how does she find work to make up the lost income? And, what if you’re an older person who is transsexual? Where does the average, senior, transgender person find work unless he or she is extraordinary at what they do? The old career development resource book, “What Color is Your Parachute” and every similar book published since, tells us that our best chance of finding a job is knowing someone who can help. Job hunters are encouraged to make lists of the people they know who might be able and willing to pull strings or make introductions. What good connections do older LGBT people have? What if they have pulled back from straight family and friends because they wanted to be out and proud? Are their gay or straight friends comfortable putting their reputations on the line by making a call

soflagaynews //

or giving them a letter of recommendation? Will the names of younger LGBT employees be on the list of possible connections? Do younger LGBT employees relate to, or even like, their older counterparts? Are corporate LGBT Employee Resource Groups (ERG), headed by younger workers, aware of the struggles of Baby Boom gay and transgender employees, and do they see such issues as worthy of their attention, and of inclusion in their limited budget? In the corporate world, finding allies who understand and support your issues is critical to having your needs championed. While older workers, in general, can feel alienated by the attitudes of younger workers, it can be particularly disenfranchising for a senior LGBT worker. To hear the offensive word “queer” used as a proud self-description by younger LGBT employees, and to see that there is no awareness on the part of youth of the many sacrifices that have been made to create such a welcoming work environment for them, can prompt senior workers to pull away from ERGs. Younger workers can be seen as ungrateful upstarts who are competing for the jobs needed to secure the older worker’s sustainability. Older employees can be seen as stubborn and out of touch with cultural advances, and as obstacles to promotions. If older LGBT workers hope to secure the support of younger LGBT workers, attention must be given to changing attitudes. Older transgender workers are sometimes seen by many younger transgender job seekers, not as pioneers, but as sad vestiges of the time when people felt forced to pick one gender over the other. Today’s youth are far more fluid in their queer identity, and feel less the need for full transition surgery. Closeted older, LGB

SouthFloridaGayNews

workers can be seen by some younger LGB employees as roadblocks to the success of equal treatment in the workplace, especially in regional offices and foreign countries. Focusing attention on the issues facing LGBT seniors requires corporate ERGs to ask seniors questions about the challenges they face, and about how best to be allies. Outside the workplace, unemployed gay and transgender seniors, like their heterosexual peers, can find support in their search for work from AARP, the American Association of Retired People. AARP has a 17 percent success rate in finding work for its members. But unemployed older LGBT people can also get training and guidance from SAGE, Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders, a national organization with regional affiliates. They have a 25 percent success rate in helping senior clients find employment. That still leaves 75 percent of the LGBT seniors who have sought help from SAGE, and the many more who haven’t heard of, or tried to get such help, living daily in the nightmare that only occasionally visits me in my dreams. If young LGBT activists are looking for the next cause to take on after marriage equality, the bread and butter issues of LGBT seniors is an issue needing immediate attention. column

ÒW hy is pride still relevant?Ó “Speak OUT” is a new weekly feature in SFGN, which is giving a voice to South Florida’s LGBT leaders. This week we asked them for their thoughts on pride and asked them if pride is still relevant. Below are some of their answers: “The Gay Rights Movement has become so mainstream because we have been vigilant in our demands for equal rights. Is it still relevant? Of course, Pride, first of all, is a celebration of those brave men and women who stood up on June 28, 1969 and said we are not going to take this anymore when the police tried, once again, to raid the Stonewall Bar in New York City. It’s a time each year to look back and say thank you to them as we would not be where we are toady as a community had they not taken a stand; it’s also relevant for the fact that we must never give up the fight, we have come very far, but still have a long road ahead of us….stand up…..stand proud….fight on!” — Terry DeCarlo, Director of Development & Public Relations for Broward House “Until LGBT discrimination is just a bad memory, Pride events are absolutely relevant. Let’s not forget that just last week, the Republican Attorney General of Florida, Pam Bondi, said our marriages hurt Florida. Pride events are the perfect venue for our neighbors to see for themselves that our families are no different than their families.” — Ken Keechl, noted trial attorney and candidate for Broward County Commission “The LGBT Community can be proud of the many new and younger activists who have moved the ball forward and are assuming leadership roles in the gay rights movement. These leaders are able to build on the extraordinary work of the LGBT movement founders and longtime activists. After years of losses at the ballot box and in public opinion, we are heading in a new direction and not looking back.” — Lori Lynch, Executive Director, LGBT Visitor Center of Miami Beach “The LGBT community here in Florida should be proud of the advancements we are poised to make when it comes to marriage. SAVE and the ACLU of Florida’s Federal Marriage Recognition lawsuit, demanding that the Governor and Attorney General recognize samesex couples that live in Florida but were married in other states, along with the pending challenge to Florida’s same-sex marriage ban in local court spearheaded by National Center for Lesbian Rights and Equality Florida, we will be on the path to marriage equality very, very soon.” — Tony Lima, Executive Director of SAVE

Visit SFGN.com/SpeakOut to see more of this week’s responses. Send an Email to Jason.Parsley@sfgn.com if you know of a LGBT community leader that should be or wants to be a part of this list.

60:second Car Review

2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI Dare to go Diesel Steve Siler By now, you may have heard that diesels are back in force and better than ever. Coincidentally, for 2015, the VW Golf is back — all-new for 2015 — and is also better than ever. Put these two together, and you have a very, very appealing combination. For starters, the new Golf’s styling has been carefully evolved, remaining sleek and clean, but thanks to cool new headlamps and tail lamps, not plain. The interior is quieter than ever, full of nice soft-touch materials, and built with that sense of solidity that German cars are famous for. Available options include navigation, Fender sound, pushbutton start, sport seats,

and much more. Under the hood, VW’s perennial diesel engine is clean, quiet, and robustly powerful from a start, and will take you roughly five mpg further on a gallon of gas than its gasoline-powered equivalent. Best of all, it only costs about a grand more than the gas version, meaning the upgrade will pay for itself sooner than later. There’s an adage in the car world that says that once you drive diesel, you never go back to gasoline. Drive the Golf TDI (or the Jetta sedan, Jetta Sportwagen, or Beetle TDI, for that matter) and see what that’s all about. I know I’m hooked.

HIV AT 30 On April 23rd HIV turned 30. This marks an anniversary that no one wants to celebrate but is a milestone that should not go unnoticed. It was on April 23, 1984 that Margaret Heckler and Dr. Robert Gallo first announced the discovery of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Just three years later, on May 20th 1987, the Poverello Center was incorporated. Poverello was one of the leaders in a National movement to respond to the AIDS epidemic by developing community based organizations (CBO’s). CBO’s were created in order to deliver services directly to the HIV/AIDS communities most affected by the disease. One of Fort Lauderdale’s leaders in this movement was Father William (Bill) Collins. He began his work helping people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) when he saw them being discharged from hospitals with little or no thought as to their continued welfare. Father Bill also found that many PLWHA were being abandoned by families and friends due to widespread fear and lack of understanding of AIDS. Many were also not having their basic needs met. Shortly after Father Bill began his work, a number of concerned community activists came together with him to establish Poverello’s mission: to provide life-saving food and basic living essentials with the highest degree of understanding, respect and love for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, who are residents of Broward County, and who meet the specified qualifications for services.

Poverello is proud to be a part of the national movement of CBO’s that sought to respond to the local needs of those most affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic including ethnic minorities, women, and the LGBTQ communities. For 27 of the last 30 years, Poverello has fought side by side with other CBO’s across the country to improve the quality of life of local PLWHA. For 15 of those 27 years Poverello has been located in Wilton Manors with 3 years at its current location next to The Pride Center at Equality Park on Dixie Highway. Poverello has been successful now for more than a quarter century. That success is due in large part to its approach to funding its programs. When customers shop at Poverello’s thrift store, or make a financial donation, their personal support becomes dollars which in turn help meet the ongoing needs of local PLWHA. In other words, Poverello is a successful CBO because readers LIKE YOU – through your donations, by volunteering and by shopping at the thrift store – enable us to provide critical services to local residents living with HIV/AIDS. Poverello and the PLWHA we serve are grateful to the Broward County communities for the support and patronage provided during the last 27 years. •

Christina Wan’s Mandarin House SFGN Staff

After almost 50 years in the United States, Christina Wan’s family has a long history of cooking up authentic Mandarin food for the folks of South Florida. While Christina’s restaurant is in Victoria Park, the Wan family has had their restaurants throughout Broward and MiamiDade counties. Some dedicated guests visit weekly from Hollywood; others have been dining with the Wan’s since Christina was 13 years old. One loyal fan drove from Orlando and back in a day just for a meal at Christina’s – pleading on Foursquare for a restaurant to open up closer to home. Thankfully, Christina Wan’s Mandarin House in Fort Lauderdale is close to our home. With a warm welcome from Christina herself when you walk in the door, it feels like you’re home. She’ll seat you next to one of the large windows or in a deep booth. There’s also ample seating at the fully stocked bar, featuring imported beers, wines by the glass, and a variety of cocktails. For an appetizer, munch on the grilled pork lettuce wraps, served with peanuts, fried onions, and a spicy hoisin sauce on top of crispy iceberg lettuce ($10). Or start off with the Hong Kong-inspired shrimp dumpling soup – served with lettuce and

fried onions ($8). For an extra kick, try the Szechwan chicken – a mix of spicy chicken with red and green peppers, green onions and chili peppers ($12). Don’t leave without trying the honeyglazed walnut shrimp – glazed walnuts and giant shrimp with broccoli tossed in. While the restaurant serves popular dishes like General’s Chicken ($15) and Mongolian Beef ($16), Christina’s also offers low-carb and low-calorie menus, offering a variety of grilled veggies and meats instead of fried. You’ll notice Christina’s fare isn’t like traditional Chinese take-out. It’s not drowning in sauce or heavily coated in batter. Rather, with her family’s tenure and her eight-years with her own restaurant, she’s proving that “traditional” can be light and filling without making you stuffed. Her South Florida roots combined with her Mandarin background makes the entire experience a worthwhile visit. The restaurant is open Monday-Saturday for lunch and dinner, while only dinner on Sunday. Christina Wan’s is located in Victoria Park, 664 North Federal Highway, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33304. Contact them at (954) 527-0228 or visit them online at www.christinawans.com.

Five Things to Like About Slow Burn’s ‘High Fidelity’ J.W. Arnold

“Lists” play a key role in “High Fidelity,” the short lived Broadway musical set in the 1990s about a 20-something young man who owns the last record store in the city — yes, we’re talking vinyl — in a new production from Slow Burn Theatre at West Boca High School. Like the iconic Casey Kasem, the DJ who played us the Saturday afternoon Top-40 lists for decades and passed away last weekend, Rob (Robert Johnston) and his friends find it easier to categorize their music and their relationships. Rob organizes his own record collection not by artists or genre, but by the era in which he purchased each (elementary, junior high and high school, college, adulthood). Fighting a traumatic breakup with girlfriend Laura (Nicole Piro), he again falls back on his lists, first offering the audience the formula for a successful mix tape compilation and later introducing his Top 5 heartbreaks, obviously omitting his true love Laura. Unlike many angst-ridden youth musicals that seem to hold some deeper meaning that transcends generations (“Hair,” “Spring Awakening,” “American Idiot”), “High Fidelity” is a nice, enjoyable show that will bring back lots of memories to audience members of a certain generation who remember spending afternoons compiling mix tapes of their own. And, with the exception of the goofy pronouncements from romantic foil Ian (Noah Levine), a “practitioner” of Eastern healing arts and meditation, there are few deep truths for Rob or the audience to glean from David Lindsay-Abaire’s book, Amanda Green’s lyrics or Tom Kitt’s rock-infused score. Even though the show material has plenty of shortcomings, co-artistic directors Patrick Fitzwater and Mathew Korinko, music director Manny Schvartzman and their young, vocally talented cast give the production their best efforts. The result is this Top 5 list of reasons to like “High Fidelity” at Slow Burn Theatre: 1. Robert Johnston - Johnston (Rob) has to do most of the heavy lifting in the show.

46

// 6.18.2014 // SFGN.com //

soflagaynews //

SouthFloridaGayNews

He’s front and center in virtually every scene and gives an appealing performance as the lovelorn Rob, a likeable guy who is negotiating his path to maturity right in front of our eyes. (Doesn’t hurt that he’s easy on the eyes, too!) 2. “I Slept with Somebody” – The standout song in Kitt’s largely uninspired score. The lyrics are clever and had the audience alternately gasping and laughing. (Rob hooks up with a girl who slept with Lyle Lovett while Laura sleeps with Ian, Kurt Cobain’s failed interventionist. It all turns into Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon!) 3. Larry Buzzeo – Buzzeo provides much needed comedic relief in two supporting roles, first as a middle-aged customer referred to by the record store staff as TMPMITW (The Most Pathetic Man in the World) and later, Bruce Springsteen. Yes, The Boss. 4. Patrick Fitzwater’s Choreography – Talented local choreographers are few and far between and Fitzwater always brings fresh perspectives to stage movement that stand out from the crowd. Throughout the show, his ‘80s and ‘90s dance moves — with a few hip hop moves thrown in — complemented the music and were well executed. 5. Lance Black’s Lighting Design – Lighting is crucial for a complicated storyline that includes flashbacks and breakouts and Black’s design effectively makes these changes clear to the audience. If there is a close honorable mention, it would be for Sean McClelland’s set design. Big, clunky boxes noisily rotate and roll to transform the stage alternately from Rob and Laura’s apartment to the record store and various exteriors. But, the cool thing, if you step back, together it visually suggests one of those hulking ‘80s boom boxes we used to carry around on our shoulders. Remember those? Slow Burn Theatre presents “High Fidelity” at West Boca Performing Arts Theater, 12811 W. Glades Rd. in Boca Raton, through June 29. Performances Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets $25 – 40 at SlowBurnTheatre.org.

a&e music Gay Men’s Chorus Presents ‘Believe! Wishes Do Come True’ J.W. Arnold

In addition to parties and parades, this year’s traditional Pride festivities will also include a concert by Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. This weekend, Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21 at 8 p.m., the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, more than 150 voices strong, will present “Believe! Wishes Do Come True,” at the Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 SW 9th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. The program, under the baton of artistic director Gordon Roberts, will feature the music of popular Disney cartoons, as well as other animated classics and show tunes. Roberts and assistant director Harold Dioquino arranged many of the songs for the chorus, nine-piece orchestra and guest soloist Kristen DiNonno Noffsinger. Together they will sing selections from Disney favorites “Mary Poppins,” “Snow White,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Lion King” and more recent films, including the hit, “Maleficent,” currently in theaters. Tropical Wave, the group’s select ensemble, will also take the stage.

“Kristen is truly the perfect Disney princess,” Roberts said. “She is not only lovely, but has a soaring voice that is perfectly suited for so many of the songs.” One of the highlights for Pride, according to Roberts, will be a medley — with twists — on “Some Day My Prince Will Come,” “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” and “Once Upon a Dream.” To close the concert, the chorus will perform an arrangement of “It’s a Small World After All,” which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and presented as a “theme and variations” as composed by a wide range of familiar classical composers. “It’s one of those songs you just can’t get out of your head,” Roberts explained, “but I think the audience will hear and appreciate it in a new way.” The Saturday performance is sold out, but general admission tickets are still available for the Friday concert for $35 at GayMensChorusOfSouthFlorida.org.

Powerful Anti-Bullying Film Costs Florida Teacher His Job ‘Love Is All You Need?’ short to be a feature David-Elijah Nahmod At the conclusion of Kim Rocco Shields’ short film “Love Is All You Need?” Ashley, around twelve or thirteen years old, commits suicide by slashing her wrists in a bathtub. By the time her two moms find her, it’s too late. Ashley is gone. Moments earlier, Ashley had wiped the word “hetero” off her forehead, which the bullies at her school had written with a sharpie as they beat and taunted her. Throughout the 19-minute film, Ashley struggles with her sexual identity as she’s brutally degraded by everyone who crosses her path. Parents, teachers, other students, it makes no difference, they all treat her the same. All because Ashley is straight. Shields’ brilliant film is taken from the real life experiences of kids who’ve been bullied. In reversing the sexual identity labels, the filmmaker creates a hauntingly nightmarish, ultimately heartbreaking fable, which underscores the brutal ugliness of bullying as no other film has. “We created the film in order to help stop bullying, to help end prejudice,” Shields said. “The film allows you to put the shoe on the other foot and really get a sense of what it’s like to be in that group of people who’ve been marginalized because of who they love.” Shields said that she was shocked that the film went viral, and that it’s having an impact. The short film has received over 3 million hits on YouTube and has won many awards at film festivals. Now, as Shields actively raises funds to turn the film into a feature, she’s joined the campaign in defense of a Northern Florida teacher who lost his job for showing the film to students. Jeremy Rhoden, gay a teacher at Polatka High School in in Polatka, screened the film to his students at a February 20 school assembly. At a March 14 hearing of the Polatka School Board, parents and clergy condemned the film for promoting sodomy, for attempting to “indoctrinate” children, and of “offending” God. Shields was part of

She’s partnering with GLSEN, the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network, the first time GLSEN has worked with a film production company. On Tuesday, June 11, and Wednesday, June 12, the Donald M. Ephraim Palm Beach Jewish Film Festival presented the updated version of the 2001 documentary “Ruthie and Connie Every Room in the House.” The screenings, at the Mandel JCC, Boynton Beach, and Mandel JCC Palm Beach Gardens respectively, were the festival’s annual commemoration of Pride Month honoring the June 1969 Stonewall Riots that ignited the modern gay civil rights movement. “Part of our mission is to educate people about human experiences and social issues that make a difference,” said Ellen Wedner, Executive Producer of the festival. “I was thrilled to see such a mix of people as we had: young, old, Jewish and not, gay and not. It was wonderful.” “Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House,” is first and foremost a love story. It’s the visible unfolding of a deep and committed soul-level relationship between two women in love struggling to escape the conventions of a heterosexist society. It’s a love story that starts in the closet, and never ends, even when their escape from the closet is done. It’s an intimate and often funny sharing of their experiences; attributes that they maintain with post-screening dialogue with the audience. It’s also a call to engage for human rights and civil equality as Ruthie and Connie have done by appearing on national TV on the

“Phil Donahue Show” and fighting a multiyear legal battle to win partnership benefits for employees of the New York City School District. They won. The film elicits kudos from some and brickbats from others as the two women escape the societal trajectory of the nuclear family to embrace themselves and others who are trying to achieve equality, visibility and acceptance as the full-fledged human beings they are. As Ruth “Ruthie” Berman) said in response to a post-screening question from the audience, “Being out is so important and we’re pretty far out,” she said. “I’m old enough that I don’t worry so much about the consequences.” “If you don’t come out,” added Constance “Connie” Kurtz, “you’re disrespecting your relationship.” Both the 2001 and the 2014 releases were produced by Donald Goldmacher so the transition between the decades is seamless and the scenes from the wedding make more poignant the women’s struggles with families, friends and society. The new version of the film will be available for sale later this year. For more information visit http://ruthieandconniethemovie.com/ or email ruthconnie@aol.com. The Case Against 8

Prop 8 doc comes to HBO June 23 David-Elijah Nahmod

There are many tales being told in “The Case Against 8,” Ben Cotner and Ryan White’s riveting new documentary about one of the lawsuits which changed the course of LGBT history by opening the marriage equality floodgates. There’s the story of Ted Olson and David Boies, who became good friends as they fought against each other in court during the 2000 Florida recount debacle, which resulted in the George W. Bush Presidency. One is a staunch liberal, the other an archconservative. The once opposing attorneys became unlikely allies in the gay rights battle of the century. There’s the story of Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, lesbian moms in love. When the cameras visit their Berkeley, Calif, home, we meet two “soccer” moms who’ve given their four kids, and each other, a wonderful, and very traditional life. There’s also the tale of Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, two sweet guys from Los Angeles who happen to love each other. They yearn for a family, which includes children. They’ll have the kids, they say, after they can legally wed. Then there’s the amazing turnaround of David Blankenhorn, founder of The Institute For American Values, a conservative think tank. A key witness for the anti-marriage advocates, Blankenhorn now supports marriage equality — he explains why in a fascinating interview shot for the film. The filmmakers followed these remarkable individuals throughout the long, arduous process of challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 8, California’s 2008 voter approved ban on same-sex marriage. We see the two couples rehearsing for court appearances. We hear testimony from both

sides, from the couples who want nothing more than to be equal members of society, and from the Pro-Prop 8 side, who admit in court that they cannot explain how allowing same sex couples to legally wed will harm “traditional” couples. So many issues are raised as the film progresses. The filmmakers offer no commentary of their own, but rather let their subjects and the events surrounding them speak for themselves. Viewers are given much to think about as the lawsuit works it’s way from the lower courts all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. It becomes clear, as the plaintiffs show up for trial, that those who support Prop 8 have little concern for “saving the American family.” As their signage plainly indicates, they hate gay people and have no other motivation for their positions. It’s also mentioned, albeit briefly, that gay advocacy groups were part of the problem. They offered no assistance to the plaintiffs or attorneys, and in fact actively opposed the lawsuit. “We spent more time fighting gay organizations than we did fighting our opponents,” said one of the assisting attorneys. “The Case Against 8” is also a love story. It’s a tale of two star crossed gay couples who are clearly meant to be with one another, and who just want the same rights as their friends, family and neighbors. Watching them share their stories as they fight tears might inspire viewers to cry along with them. What they and their attorneys achieved is inspiring. “The Case Against 8” premieres on HBO at 9 p.m. on June 23. It will also be available at HBO on Demand. soflagaynews //
