San Fran’s Pride Event May Have Had 2 Attacks (AP) San Francisco police are investigating a second hate crime during the city’s Gay Pride festivities. Police spokesman Albie Esparza says a member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and her husband were attacked Saturday night by a group of four people who yelled anti-gay slurs.

The sisters are a performing arts troupe that dresses in nuns’ habits.

The assailants

1

then fled on foot. Both victims were treated at the scene.

Police have previously said another attack in the city on Saturday - this one on two women - was also preceded by ant-gay slurs and is being investigated as a hate crime.

Esparza says the city experienced 20 bias crimes last year, with sexual orientation accounting for at least eight of them.

Putin Won’t Meet With Elton John to Talk Gay Rights (EDGE) Russian President Vladimir Putin won’t talk with Sir Elton John about gay rights since Kremlin officials say they did not receive an official invitation from the pop star, Gay News reports. Sir John, who performed in Russia last year despite the country’s controversial “homosexual propaganda” laws, defied protests while he was in the country. In recent interviews, the singer

2

said he’s asked to meet with Putin to discuss the anti-gay measure, according to GSN.

“I am going to Russia in November and I will try and meet Putin and I will try and talk to him. I don’t know what good it will do,” he told Sky News. “It’s no good putting up a wall and saying: ’I’m not talking to these people’; the only way things get solved is by talking to people.”

Anti-Gay Archbishop Under Investigation for Sexual Conduct With Men (AP) MINNEAPOLIS — Archbishop John Nienstedt, a former Detroit Catholic auxiliary bishop and onetime pastor of Royal Oak’s Shrine of the Little Flower parish, has announced that the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis is investigating him after allegations of inappropriate behavior surfaced several months ago. In a statement released [last week], Nienstedt said he ordered the investigation himself after the claims were made against him. He did not detail the nature of the allegations, but said they are “absolutely and entirely false.” He added that

3

they do not involve minors or lay members and do not suggest anything illegal. “The archdiocese investigates all allegations of clergy misconduct,” Nienstedt said. “It would be unfair to ignore these allegations simply because I know them to be false.” Nienstedt’s statement came after the investigation was first reported online Tuesday by Commonweal, a Catholic publication. Nienstedt told the journal that he’d been accused by a former priest of improperly touching the man’s neck.

news highlight Are Evangelicals Changing Their Minds on Gay Marriage? SFGN Staff

According to an article in Political Magazine, “Evangelicals Are Changing Their Minds on Gay Marriage: And the Bible isn’t getting in their way” evangelical attitudes are slowly softening on the issue of gay marriage. And even those opposed are only half-heartedly fighting it. “Now, Christian political groups, including Focus on the Family and the National Association of Evangelicals, have virtually stopped campaigning on the issue, shifting their focus to legal efforts to shield religious business owners from having to cater to gay weddings,” the article reads. “Such views will only become more common in the years ahead, says Jeremy Thomas, an Idaho State University sociologist who has studied conservative Christians’ changing attitudes toward homosexuality. ‘Evangelicals will more or less come to embrace homosexuality in the next 20 to 30 years,’ Thomas predicts. ‘I would put all my money on that statement.’” But not all evangelicals are changing their attitudes and some are digging in for a long battle against changing attitudes and gay

marriage. “What we are seeing is the impact of this relentless brainwashing by the mainstream media, and it affects people that aren’t thinking clearly or aren’t grounded in a biblical worldview,” AFA’s issues analysis director, Bryan Fischer, told Political Magazine. “There are some evangelical leaders who are sounding a very defeatist tone—the battle is over, and we lost and we have to get used to it. That kind of defeatism just has no place in the evangelical community.”

Joan Rivers Jokes Obama Is Gay, First Lady Is Transgender

(CNN) -- Who needs Fourth of July fireworks when you have Joan Rivers around? The comedian known for her lack of selfcensoring recently officiated a same-sex wedding and was asked by a photographer if she believed the United States would ever see the first gay or female president. Her response was typical Rivers. “We already have it with Obama, so let’s just calm down,” she said. “You know Michelle (Obama) is a trans.” When asked to further explain Rivers said, “A transgender. We all know it.” A representative for Rivers released the following statement to CNN from the comic about her remarks to the photographer:

J

oan Rivers

“I think it’s a compliment. She’s so attractive, tall, with a beautiful body, great face, does great makeup. Take a look and go back to La Cage Au Follies (sic). The most gorgeous women are transgender. Stop it already ... and if you want to talk about ‘politically correct,’ I think this is a ‘politically incorrect’ attack on me because I’m old, Jewish, a woman and a ‘hetty’ -- a heteosexual ... and I plan to sue the reporter who, when he turned off his camera, tried to touch me inappropriately on the a** - luckily he hit my ankle. Read the book ... if you think that’s silly, wait to (sic) you see what I say about FDR and Eleanor!” CNN’s Carolyn Sung contributed to this report.

plits in FIFA Anti-Racism Strategy at World Cup

Splits in FIFA’s plan to fight discrimination at the World Cup have been exposed after reported incidents involving fans went unpunished. The public divide was revealed Thursday at a briefing involving the chairmen of FIFA’s task force against racism, Jeffrey Webb, and its disciplinary panel, Claudio Sulser. It came at a World Cup which FIFA President Sepp Blatter has pledged would not tolerate discrimination. Webb is unhappy that evidence provided to Sulser’s panel - of fans chanting gay slurs, wearing black face make-up and carrying banners with far-right symbols - did not result in any sanctions. “It is obvious there is a disconnect between what we in the task force deem as racism and discrimination and what the disciplinary committee deems as racism and discrimination,” Webb told reporters. Webb said a better strategy is needed at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. “It is much more of a problem in Russia,” the FIFA vice president acknowledged after the briefing. “Russia itself needs a special task force, just for Russia and from an educational standpoint internally.” Sulser defended his panel’s apparent inaction against football federations, which are responsible for the behavior of fans inside stadiums. He said sanctions were not possible where no specific player or team was targeted. “There have been isolated cases,” Sulser said through a translator, before adding that he did not want to “intervene only for the sake of intervening.” Asked about dropping a case against Mexico fans chanting a slur at opposing goalkeepers, he said: “They have used words which were inappropriate, even kind of rude, which were not directed at a specific Photo: CNN.com player.”

4

// 7.9.2014

// SFGN.com //

The FIFA panel was supplied with evidence by monitors from not-for-profit fan groups. Those groups were given no formal role at the World Cup despite a proposal to FIFA by Webb’s task force in March. Webb said there was “absolutely no reason” for this failure to step up evidence-gathering. “It is very unfortunate. We had identified this as one of our top priorities,” Webb said.

ro-Hockey Player Arrested for Groping Male Cop’s Behind

(EDGE) Canadian professional hockey player Claude Giroux, who is the Philadelphia Flyers captain, was arrested last Tuesday for repeatedly grabbing a male cop’s buttocks while at a bar in Ottawa, Canada, USA Today reports. Giroux, 26, was hauled off to jail for the night on July 1, Canada Day, for grabbing a male cop’s behind twice. Following an investigation, Giroux, was released and no charges were filed as the athlete called the incident a holiday “prank.” In a statement the athlete apologized and said: “I regret my actions on Canada Day and sincerely apologize to my fans, teammates and the Philadelphia Flyers organization for my misguided attempt at humor. Following an investigation, law enforcement determined that charges are not warranted. I have the utmost respect for law enforcement and apologize to the Ottawa Police Department and specifically the individual officer. I will be making no further public comment on this matter. I will not be distracted from my ongoing preparation for the upcoming season. I remain 100% committed and focused on working with my team to return the Stanley Cup to Philadelphia.” From our media partner EDGE.

Study Suggest Kids of Same-Sex Parents Healthier, Happier

ussie

(EDGE) Children of same-sex parents enjoy better levels of health and well-being than others, a new Australian research study suggests. University of Melbourne researchers surveyed 315 same-sex parents and 500 children about their physical health and social well-being, and found that kids of same-sex partners scored six percent higher in general health and family cohesion than kids of straight parents. Lead researcher Doctor Simon Crouch said children raised by same-sex partners scored an average of 6 per cent higher than the general population on measures of general health and family cohesion. “That’s really a measure that looks at how well families get along, and it seems that same-sex-parent families and the children in them are getting along well, and this has positive impacts on child health,” said lead researcher Dr. Simon Crouch, who said the study was the largest of its kind. Crouch said same-sex couples faced less pressure to fulfill traditional gender roles, which led to a more harmonious households. The traditional nurturing role is shared, it’s not one parent over another, the traditional breadwinning role is shared. “Previous research has suggested that parenting roles and work roles, and home roles within same-sex parenting families are more equitably distributed when compared to heterosexual families,” he said. “So what this means is that people take on roles that are suited to their skill sets rather than falling into those gender stereotypes, which is mum staying home and looking after the kids and dad going out to earn money. What this leads to is a more harmonious family unit and therefore feeding on to better health and wellbeing.” Family Voice Australia research officer Roslyn Phillips said the study should be taken with caution as the parents who volunteered for the study likely self-selected as happy families. “You’ve got to look beyond studies like these to what happens when the child reaches adulthood, and that’s the only time with independent assessment you can really say what’s gone on with the parenting and then ask them how they’re going in all sorts of ways, I think that would be a more relevant study,” said Phillips. “You’ve got to look beyond studies like these to what happens when the child reaches adulthood and that’s the only time, with independent assessment you can really say, what’s gone on with the parenting.”

The marketing effort is part of Burger King’s push to connect with customers in a more meaningful way, particularly with the younger individuals fast-food chains are known for courting. nstagram Removes SameSex Kiss Photo, Apologizes

(EDGE) Instagram recently removed a photo and some say it’s because it was an image of two men kissing, Gay Star News reports. Alberto Guzman posted a pic of him and his husband, Janeiro Boffill, from their wedding day 13 years ago to celebrate Pride on June 29. The image included the hashtags #happy #gaypride #equalrights #tilldeathdousapart and #wearethesame. The pro-gay message didn’t stop Instagram users from flagging the photo as “inappropriate,” however and it was later removed by the picture-sharing social media app. Instagram officials apologized for removing the photo, however, and have since put the image back online. “When our team processes reports from other members of the Instagram community, we occasionally make a mistake,” an Instagram spokesperson told The Huffington Post Tuesday. 6

nti Gay Marriage Gathering Planned for Utah

(AP) An international conservative group that opposes homosexuality is planning its first worldwide conference in the U.S. next year - a four-day gathering in Utah, which has become a focal point in the gay marriage movement. The Rockford, Illinois-based World Congress of Families has about 40 partner organizations, including the Focus on the Family and Concerned Women for America. The group brings together people of different religions and ethnicities to promote the “natural human family,” which its website says consists of a man and woman raising children with love and discipline.

The organization had to cancel this year’s international conference in Moscow due to turmoil related to Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

The conference is expected to draw about 3,000 people.

ourt Sides With Ex-Partner Of Girl’s Birth Mother

(AP) — The New Hampshire Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that the ex-partner of a 12-year-old’s girl’s mother has made her case to be considered a parent under the law. The unanimous ruling makes New Hampshire the fourth state in the country to extend similar parental protections to same-sex parents, including a parent with no biological tie to the child. The court ruled that the Uniform Parentage Act “is based on a person’s conduct, not a biological connection.” The case pitted Madelyn B.’s birth mother, Melissa, against her former partner, Susan. Because it’s a custody case, no last names were used. The pair split up when Madelyn was 6 but continued to co-parent until 2013, when Melissa cut off the relationship and moved to terminate Susan’s guardianship. Melissa also began proceedings to have her new husband adopt Madelyn.

Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame Breaks Barriers Jacob Long

Previous Inductees Bill Gubrud, the founder and now executive director of the Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame, was floored when he heard people — in 2012 — wonder why no mainstream sports figures had come out. Of course they have! He didn’t scream, though. He acted. “It’s short-term memory. If it hasn’t happened in the last few years, it hasn’t happened,” Gubrud told the SFGN. “I think people really need to know the history of the athletes and what they’ve gone through.” What the hell is Gubrud talking about, you may be thinking. Jason Collin (an inductee of the hall) was the first major professional sports figure to come out, right? Wrong. The first inductee that the board of directors at the hall of fame discussed was Glenn Burke, who played Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics from — wait for it — 1976 to 1979. That’s over three decades ago. According to the hall of fame, Burke was the first and only MLB player that came out to his teammates and team owners during his career. Not after, not when it was

safe, not when he retired, but during. Along with fellow ballplayer, Dusty Baker, the two are also credited with inventing the high-five, according to Gubrud. “This all started long before Jason Collins came out,” Gubrud said. Gubrud grew up in a family of six. His oldest brother, and his little sister, were gay — “three out of six, that’s half” Gubrud muses — and the family was supportive. “I was one of the lucky ones,” he told the Mirror. But coming out in 1998 meant he lost many friends along the way. Having always been a huge Cubs fan and moving to Chicago to work for the Chicago Free Press, he was beside himself when the team he loved, took out ads at the paper he worked for, a gay newspaper. That made the Cubs the first professional sports team to advertise in a gay newspaper. With 2,000 tickets during its first ever Gay Day (in 2001), the Cubs were a natural fit for an inductee to the hall of fame. Gubrud said the hall of fame has three main objectives:

Ben Cohen

English activist and former England rugby union international player.

Andrew Goldstein

First American male team-sport professional athlete (lacrosse) to be openly gay during playing career.

Orlando Cruz

First boxer to come out as gay.

Dr. Tom Wadell

Founder of the Gay Games in 1982.

LZ Granderson

Journalist and commentator for CNN and ESPN.

Billie Jean King

Former world number one professional tennis player.

Jason Collins

First NBA player to come out

Greg Louganis

1. To preserve history of LGBT people in the sporting world - sadly something no one else does, he said. 2. To educate school districts around the country. 3. To honor amateur athletes (or professional). On top of the website that runs the hall of fame, an educational program is in the works. The idea is for the people running it to travel the country, showcase inductees (who may even show up), and present the LGBT history of sports. “We want to make sure there’s a right attitude. Pre-Jackie Robinson, if you were an African-American youth, you had no one to look up to that was African-American in mainstream sports,” Gubrud said. “Likewise, if you’re LGBT today, you want someone to

It’s so important to me that people know the historical aspect of it.” For more information, go to GayAndLesbianSports.com.

A ‘Celebration of Friends’ Ditches South Florida Annual event for mature gay men will take place in Orlando July 17-20 Denise Royal The 2014 Celebration of Friends takes place in just a few weeks. Attendees can expect big changes, as the gathering will happen in Orlando, rather than South Florida. Event organizer Thomas Pence is excited about holding the event in Central Florida. “In the past, many of the hotels in South Florida weren’t that friendly to gay people. One hotel didn’t live up to its contract. Upon our arrival, we were informed they would only feed half of us. Another kicked us out of

the pool at 6 p.m. because the security guard didn’t like to see two men hugging. We stayed at the Sheraton for so many years because it was the only hotel to live up to its promises,” Pence said. This year’s Celebration of Friends will be held from July 17-20 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando at SeaWorld. The event is a chance for mature gay men, and those who love them, to meet and enjoy each other’s company.

PEACE

Last year’s celebration was attended by gay men from France, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Japan, Finland, Ecuador and other locations throughout the world. With such a diverse gathering of men, this event is the perfect place for gays to meet. The oldest participant was 93, while the youngest was 22. The average age of the nearly 500 participants was 55 years old. This year, aside from the private pool parties, movies, nightly entertainment and karaoke “friends” attending in Orlando will

have the city at their fingertips. That includes complimentary shuttle service to Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World. Pence predicts this year could very well be the best yet. “Over the years, we’ve become like a family. Every major city has a Prime Time meeting club. But ours is by the least expensive. Every year, it’s getting better and becoming more inclusive and more racially diverse,” he told SFGN.

‘Obamacare’ Giving Loophole to Insurance Companies on HIV Medications in Florida Christiana Lilly

christiana.lilly@gmail.com

The Affordable Care Act was supposed to help AIDS patients, but four Florida health insurance providers are doing just the opposite, health agencies say. Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PHRMA) commissioned a study of healthcare plans available through the ACA, finding that up to 35 percent of them placed AIDS/HIV medications — even generic ones — in the highest price bracket, level five. In Florida, four insurance companies are doing this: Cigna, Humana, CoventryOne, and Affordable Health. “What the plans here seem to be doing is designing their benefits to discourage patients with HIV/AIDS from enrolling in their plans,” said Wayne Turner, staff attorney with the National Health Law Program. With the creation of the ACA, also known as Obamacare, insurance companies could no longer turn down a client because of their preexisting conditions. Patients spending thousands of dollars a month on HIV/AIDS medications were one group of many that were relieved by this. However, the insurance companies are alleged to have found a way around this. While generic drugs tend to go on lower pricing tiers, and specialty drugs in higher tiers, there is no hard and fast rule on what constitutes a specialty drug. Insurance companies can choose

18

// 7.9.2014

to place whatever medications on whatever tier they want. “Health plans don’t want to be the best health plan for HIV and AIDS because people with HIV and AIDS have prescription drugs and other health needs,” Turner said. “That’s not the point of the Affordable Care Act.” It’s also not allowed — the act prohibits “discriminatory health insurance practices,” according to the complaint the National Health Law Program and The AIDS Institute filed with the Office of Civil Rights in May. In a statement to South Florida Gay News from Humana, the AIDS/HIV medications are in the same category as those for rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, hepatitis B & C, cancer, growth hormone disorders, anemia, osteoporosis, and Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. “Humana offers several plan choices so members can select the one that best meets their needs and budget,” according to the statement. A representative from Cigna said the company doesn’t comment on pending legal issues, but noted that, “Cigna plans provide access to HIV care and prescription drugs that not only follow the latest HHS guidelines and evidence-based practices, but also provide comprehensive customer support through a dedicated condition-specific team consisting of nurses, pharmacists and therapy support coordinators.

The plans include coverage for all medically necessary HIV drugs.” According to the study from PHRMA, putting medications on higher tiers requires the patient to foot at least 40 percent of the cost. Taking into account the cost of monthly premiums, doctor visits, tests, and other health-related procedures, costs add up quickly. “Shifting the cost of medications to patients, by some plans, is not only blatant discrimination, but it can lead to poorer health outcomes since beneficiaries will not be able to afford and access their life-saving medications,” Carl Schmid, deputy executive director of The AIDS Institute, said in a statement from PHRMA. And it does have an impact on HIV/AIDS patients: only 17 percent of people living with HIV have private insurance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 30 percent don’t have any form of insurance. Have you experienced discrimination from your health insurance company? We want to hear about it!

Meet John Porter, CEO of 2 Skinny Drunks Denise Royal

John Porter didn’t set out to be the CEO of a company that manufactures organic cocktail mixers. His background is in commercial real estate. And he’s quite successful at it. He and his business partner/cousin Dianna Mulcahy, own commercial buildings and manage commercial properties. For years, Porter and Mulcahy, talked about starting a company. “It really was a family joke for the longest time,” Porter said. But something changed during Thanksgiving of 2011. Porter and Mulcahy stopped laughing and they got serious. Over the next three years, they inched away at putting together a plan to get down to business. “Everything that we’ve done has always been downplayed. We kept our expectations low. We thought maybe we’d get a beach house for the summer,” he said. They spent months working on a brand identity. Before they knew it, 2 Skinny Drunks was complete with its tongue and cheek name, image and a real business plan. These days, Porter and Mulcahy are taking their 2 Skinny Drunks brand on tour. They’re launching the product around the country, allowing potential clients to put a face (or two) to their brand. Right now, 2 Skinny Drunks mixers are available online at 2SkinnyDrunks.com. But the company hopes they’ll soon be for sale at restaurants and at organic stores like Whole Foods and Fresh Market. But getting the word out is just the beginning. The

company has had to work hard to stand apart from the competition. “Everybody drinks differently. We felt like the ready-to-drink market is ‘been there, done that.’ What we wanted to do is really excellent mixers. It allows us to do what we do well. That means including vitamins and electrolytes in our products. We approached it by not cutting corners or thinking about our bottom line. We wanted to be the Bentley of booze,” Porter said. Porter grew up outside Louisville, Kentucky. And coincidentally, that’s where most of his booze business is based. But these days, he splits his time between Miami and New York City. He’s engaged to be married — but no date has been set. “We’re happy. We’ve already made the commitment,” Porter tells SFGN. He also has a 17year old son that he adopted with a previous partner. One might think all that would be enough to keep Porter busy, but that’s not the case. He’s also an up and coming author with “The Road to Hell is Paved in Hangovers: Entrepreneurship on a Budget” due in stores this fall.

Religious ‘Progressives’ Can’t Have it Both Ways Support us fully or don’t call yourself an ally John Becker

Last week, just before the Independence Day holiday, Sojourners founder Jim Wallis -- an internationally-known theologian, bestselling author, self-proclaimed “prophet,” and one of the most influential figures in progressive Christianity -added his voice to the chorus of faith

leaders weighing in on President Obama’s promised executive order that will ban federal contractors from discriminating against LGBT people in the workplace. Wallis’ voice wasn’t added to the conversation on purpose, though; his views were revealed by BuzzFeed, which obtained

We believe that change in our churches is necessary in regard to welcoming LGBT persons and are committed to working on that. But we believe that government action in making those changes would be very counter-productive to our goals of change. In particular, we are concerned about the real danger of handing the “tool” of religious liberty (a very legitimate issue) over to those who would use it against the LGBT community and your administration in pursuing equal protection. Faithbased organizations that have been trying to work on these issues internally would strongly react to the state telling them they must change their current beliefs publically — or no longer be eligible for When BuzzFeed’s Chris Geidner asked Wallis to explain the inconsistency between his liberal reputation and his belief that religion-based discrimination against LGBT people deserves special protections, he reportedly backpedaled on much of the draft letter’s contents and said that now it might not be sent at all. Backpedaling aside, it’s clear that on LGBT workers’ rights, Wallis wants to have it both ways: he wants to be seen as an ally of the LGBT community, but he also apparently believes in the creation of a special “right” for businesses receiving federal contracts to discriminate against LGBT people on the taxpayers’ dime — until they magnanimously decide to stop, anyway. While Wallis’s position is both a galling and insulting one for an alleged “progressive” Christian to take, it sadly isn’t surprising: this “prophetic” man could only

22

manage a tepid statement of quasi-support for marriage equality last year — one in which he managed to never actually say he supported same-sex marriage at all. By Wallis’ own admission, he only got that far because young evangelicals forced his hand. “Young believers, 62 percent of young evangelicals now support marriage equality,” Wallis said. And this “evolution” conveniently occurred at the precise moment when Wallis was hawking his newest book. I don’t call that “progressive” or “prophetic,” I call it blatantly opportunistic. And that’s not even the worst of it: just one month after Wallis sorta kinda admitted that same-sex relationships deserve equal treatment, he threw LGBT couples under the bus in the battle over immigration reform. The maliciously cruel “Defense of Marriage Act,” which was still soflagaynews //

a draft of a letter Wallis had penned to the President and was circulating among other religious leaders in the hopes they’d sign on. So what is Wallis’s position on the issue? The words of the draft letter speak for themselves:

federal contracts. Change is coming on the inside, but those changes could easily be reversed if they were perceived to be forced by the government… If religious exemptions are removed, withdrawn, or seriously cut back from those in place, like in ENDA, the perception will be that your administration is attacking religious freedom and liberty… Just as freedom of speech is only meaningful if it protects all viewpoints, ensuring religious liberty must be respected for churches and faith-based organizations who believe that heterosexual marriage is the biblical norm. And the state should not require faith-based organizations to violate those beliefs in order to receive government contracts or grants. in force at the time, tore bi-national samesex couples apart and ripped children away from their gay and lesbian parents. But when Vermont Senator Pat Leahy proposed an amendment to the immigration reform bill that would protect such couples, Wallis opposed it, along with anti-gay groups like the Southern Baptist Convention, the National Association of Evangelicals, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Wallis said it was the “wrong place at the wrong time” to even consider treating bi-national samesex couples and families with dignity. Marriage equality, immigration reform, workplace equality... Jim Wallis has managed to either fumble or drop the ball completely on virtually every major LGBT civil rights issue of the past several years. On what planet can such a person be considered a friend of the LGBT community? With “friends” like this, who

needs enemies? It’s time we send a loud and clear message to Jim Wallis-style “progressive” Christians: no more. When it comes to LGBT rights, you can’t have it both ways. You either fully support our equality — in all areas of civil society, without religious exemptions -- or you don’t get to call yourself an LGBT ally. The choice is yours. John Becker is an LGBT rights activist and writer. As a writer he’s best known as a contributor to and the Editor in Chief of The Bilerico Project; his proudest moment as an activist is his undercover, hiddencamera exposé that revealed fraudulent “ex-gay” therapy at Marcus and Michele Bachmann’s Christian counseling clinic. A frequent guest on news networks including ABC, CNN, and MSNBC, Becker lives in Washington, D.C. with his beloved husband Michael and their dog Rosie.

The Hard Times of Gay Jocks Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

It was the Fall of 1987 and the Brandy’s Bail Bond Bandits were playing the Fort Lauderdale Cops for the city championship at Hardy Park in Fort Lauderdale. I was the starting centerfielder and the captain of the Bandits. We were down 3-2 in the seventh inning when we loaded the bases with two out and I came to the plate with a chance to win the game. I took the second pitch and lined it into the gap in right center field. Two runs would score and my teammates greeted me in a mob scene as I rounded first base. “Pretty good for a faggot,” I told them. Until Chuck Dima, Jim Stork, Dave Litty and a host of other really good people came together to form the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Softball League, it was never easy being a gay jock in this town. Hell, it has never been easy being a gay jock anywhere in America where group sports have been involved. Homophobia invades locker rooms, and guys who are not macho and masculine are demeaned as “faggots, queers, and homos.” It’s still pervasive enough that scores of gay athletes, even Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, won’t come out of the closet. In the past year, we have seen Michael Sam’s name called in the NFL draft, after he came out. It was a first. We saw President Obama call and congratulate basketball star Jason

Collins when he came out, and that too was a first, both for a president and a hoopster. For years, I have believed athletes could care less who you sleep with if you could take two and hit to right. But my belief is a little fantasy, too. The truth is that gay athletes are still not openly accepted, or it would not be news if they came out of the closet. Irreverent reactions from multiple players have shown us we have a ways to go with lots of people. Last year, the Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame opened in Chicago, with a host of inductees, including Chuck Dima, one of the founding forces of gay softball right here in South Florida. This year, our paper features more names, highlighting the lives of these individuals who stood out and proud in the face of public disapproval.

umpires, gay team executives, and gay coaches. We also know the path is slow and measured, the road still tempered. Individuals want to be measured by their deeds on the field, not in a bedroom. We used to feature Kyle’s Bed N’ Breakfast, a great gay cartoon penned by Greg Fox. One of its main characters is a baseball player, Brad that has not yet come out of the closet. His animated life resembles many of those in our community. His day has not come. When it does, he will be free. So to will you. Live your life outside the cartoon. Become who you are. Be Free. Greg Louganis

Our lives are ours to lead, and the paths we take are always our own. Still, we have reason to celebrate when people buck the tide and pave the way, whether it’s a high school center coming out of the closet, or a retired pro footballer. Years ago, it was David Kopay. Last week, it was Brad Thorson, in an Independence Day declaration. Let’s not criticize those who took a while getting here. Let’s just say ‘thanks for arriving,’ and welcome to the party. People like Greg Louganis had to deal not only with being gay, but being HIV positive. His life has not been diminished, and he has been a role model for many. So too can we hope that for the many more whose names will follow. They are out there, and we know this to be so. We have seen gay

“What international gay rights issue do you think we should pay attention to?”

Transfer Your Money to a Guaranteed Return Fixed Annuity

SFGN Staff This week SFGN launches “Speak OUT” a weekly feature giving a regular voice to South Florida LGBT leaders. Below are some of their answers:

Almost 3 billion people live in countries that imprison or murder our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. Therefore, I think the issue of international LGBTQ rights is actually the issue about international LGBTQ rights that we should all be paying attention to. There is no one issue that should overshadow any other, they’re all equally important in the fight for worldwide LGBTQ equality, both legal and lived! I encourage everyone to visit www.TheGuardian.com to check out their interactive tool that provides insight about our equality on a global level.”

— Victor Diaz-Herman, Executive Director, Pridelines Youth Services

I think “pay attention to” are the important words for the U.S. LGBT community in this question. Pride month has come and gone, with millions spent on corporate-sponsored floats, street parties and entertainment. I am all for celebrating Pride in a big way, but what if we poured that much energy and money into supporting our sisters and brothers around the world who are still fighting for their right to exist — like we used to do in the late 60s and 70s for our right to exist?” — Lea Brown, Senior Pastor, MCC of the Palm Beaches

Keep an eye on the countries that are pushing ahead for LGBT equality and visibility despite opposition. Last month, for example, Turkey’s LGBT community turned out by the tens of thousands for this year’s Pride Parade on Istiklal Avenue, Istanbul’s main street. Homosexuality is not illegal there, but it also isn’t supported. This is believed to be largest public gay event in any Muslim-dominant country.” — Toni Armstrong, Founder/Director of BLAST Women of WPB Visit SFGN.com/SpeakOut to see more of this week’s responses. Drive This, Not That

2014 Telsa Model S vs. Steve Siler Cadillac ELR – Electrolux Winner: 2014 Cadillac ELR

Electric cars have never been more relevant, more livable, and more appealing, and in the case of the Cadillac ELR and the Tesla Model S, more luxurious. The ELR and the Model S are quite differently packaged — the Caddy is a two-door four-seater, while the Tesla is a plus-sized hatchback with up to seven seats. That itself may determine which is best for you, but unless you have kids or a carpool — and let’s face it, queens, few of us do — I would recommend the Cadillac if you want to cushify your emissions-free commute. First, inside, only the glitzy, feature-laden, beautifully crafted interior of the Cadillac feels worth its lofty price, while the vacuous Tesla feels almost un-designed. At the very most, the Model S feels half-baked until you check a bunch of option boxes, at which point you could be looking at a sixfigure price tag (the one I tested rang in at $122K!). Both cars have ergonomic challenges — the Cadillac features annoying capacitive touch controls that feel unnatural, while the Tesla buries all of its secondary controls — including the sunroof controls — into a huge, inelegant vertical monitor plunked into the middle of its flat dashboard. A lack of a center console does not help the Tesla’s sense of intimacy. But the biggest reason I recommend the Caddy is because of its Chevy Volt-based range-extending powertrain that alleviates the need to constantly be hunting for places to plug in the car, allowing you to drive 30-35 miles on electrons before the engine kicks on, then letting you go another 300 or so miles at 35-plus mpg before you have to pull over for gas. This also allows apartment-dwellers who don’t have access to a plug at home to own an ELR if they are allowed to charge up at work. The Tesla is electric-only, meaning that when you run out of juice, you better be near a plug. And bring a book, because charge times can be several hours long to get you a few miles of range. To be fair, many Tesla owners have found ways to live with that — usually by virtue of having another car in the household for longer trips. But call me crazy, but I don’t think cars this pricey should require you to have a second car just to live with the first one. Therefore, the Caddy takes this one.

This week in LGBT History From Quist July 9 – 15 Quistapp.com

July 9, 1550 — Jacopo Bonfadio Beheaded

Several humanists were tried for sodomy in this time, but Bonfadio is one of few to be executed--most likely because he had earned the ire of several wealthy Genoese families by publishing accounts about them. It appears that he was once accused of sleeping with a male student and his enemies used this incident later to have him executed.

July 10, 2009— Death of Cesar Torres Ruled a Murder

His boyfriend Michael Herrera stands trial for Torres’s murder, and is convicted. He receives a twenty-five-year prison sentence.

July 11, 2012 — First Lesbian Super PAC Created

Jane Lynch, Billie Jean King, and other influential lesbians form their own political action group to fundraise and lobby on issues that impact lesbians in the U.S.

July 12, 1972 — First Openly Gay Persons to Address an American Political Convention

Jim Foster and Madeleine Davis had been instrumental in securing signatures for George McGovern in the California Democratic Primary. They are given a prime time TV spot speaking at the Democratic National Convention and call upon the convention to add a gay rights plank to the party platform. The plank is ultimately defeated.

July 13, 2009 — Opening of Lateisha Green Murder Trial

The trial lasts four weeks and Dwight

DeLee is found guilty of a hate crime in the murder of the 22-year-old transgender woman. He is the second person in the country to be convicted of a hate crime for killing a transgender person.

July 14, 2011 — FAIR Education Act Signed into Law

The act requires that the political, economic, and social contributions of LGBTQ people be included in educational textbooks and the social studies curricula in California public schools. It also amends an existing law by adding sexual orientation and religion into a list of characteristics (which already includes race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, and disability) that schools are prohibited from sponsoring negative activities about or teaching students about in an adverse way.

July 15, 2003 — Premiere of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

The reality show features the “Fab Five,” a quintet of gay men who conduct makeovers for straight men. It plays on stereotypes that gay men know more about fashion, food, personal grooming, interior design and culture. The show becomes immensely popular and is praised by much of the mainstream gay press, but recives some criticism for its generalizations and stereotyping. a&e theater “Designing Women” is Even Funnier This Time Around J.W. Arnold Lucky for me, Logo devoted the entire Independence Day weekend to a “Designing Women” binge-a-thon. Lifetime, TVLand, WEtv, Logo and the like have long paid homage to gay favorites like “The Golden Girls” and “Will & Grace,” and now Linda Bloodworth-Thomason’s late 1980s series about a sassy group of gals at an Atlanta interior design firm have been rediscovered. After watching dozens of episodes, I was truly prepared for “Re-Designing Women,” the latest TV/movie parody from Jamie Morris currently playing at Empire Stage. Over the years, Morris’ twisted sense of humor has resulted in “Mommie Queerest,” “Silence of the Clams,” and last summer’s “The Facts of Life: The Lost Episode,” all performed by men in drag and all completely campy. In this production, the ladies of the Sugarbaker design firm, Julia (Morris), Susanne (Ashton McKay Shawyer), Mary Jo (Chad Peterson) and Charlene (Christopher Mitchell)—and don’t forget ex-con turned stockboy turned partner Anthony (DariusAnthony Robinson)—have fallen on hard times. Overpriced throw pillows and designer tchotchkes aren’t selling like they did before the Great Recession. Susanne gets a brilliant idea to save the business — star in their own Bravo reality series, “Sugarwalls,” an oh-so-wrong sendup on the company name, Sugarbaker, and the “walls” they decorate, with the familiar hit by Sheena Easton as the theme. One thing is sure, that’s not what Easton had in mind when she penned that song. No reality show is complete without some fireworks. The second half takes place at the reunion special, held on a special episode of “Watch What Happens Next” with Andy Cohen (Kevin Moore). It turns out the breakout star of the show is wacky Berniece (Mikey Abrams) and everybody drinks when

SouthFloridaGayNews

her signature line, “Black man, black man!” is played. Disappointed fame whore Susanne returns from a world cruise as big as the ship on which she traveled. A feud erupts between sharp-tongued Mary Jo and Charlene, who is convinced she’s shrinking. Unlike Morris’ earlier parodies, the script AND the cast, under the direction of Christopher Kenney, really capture the nuances of their characters and then completely blow them out of the water— from Julia’s sanctimonious tirades and Mary Jo’s cocktail-infused testimonials to Charlene’s silly down-home stories and Susanne’s self-absorbed manipulations. Their performances are silly and over the top, but never disassociate themselves from the original characters. Robinson’s Anthony gets some of the best jokes and Kevin Moore has completely mastered all of Cohen’s physical idiosyncrasies and mannerisms. It should also be noted Mitchell, the only cast member who hasn’t performed the show before, quickly mastered the fast pace of it. Michael McClain’s set design, including some elements from Island City Stage’s recent production of “The Pride,” puts the audience front and center into the living room of the show’s Atlanta mansion and the action is further accentuated by effective and clever lighting from Preston Bircher. Kudos go to Empire Stage and David Gordon for continuing to upgrade the technical capabilities of the intimate black box space. “Re-Designing Women” is very funny and, if the snorting and cackling full house audience is any indication, the production will continue to be sold out throughout its extended run. “Re-Designing Women” runs Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. through Aug. 3 at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $30 at EmpireStage.com.

If you’re like me, nothing says comfort food like good ol’ New Orleans cooking. The spice, the flair, and the purity of these dishes warm your mind, heart, body and soul. So

let’s take a trip to the Big Easy tonight for dinner my Peeps and let the happy food dance take control.

Prep:

Andouille Sausage cut into smaller pieces, on the bias Chicken thighs & drumsticks Olive Oil & 2 tbsps butter 3/4 cup flour 1 onion 1 green bell pepper 2 stalks celery & 4 cloves garlic ground down in food processor 2 cups low sodium chicken stock 1 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp cayenne pepper (or to heat preference ) salt Parsley & green onion for garnish In pot: 2 tbsps Olive Oil. Add Andouille to brown and extract fats. Remove. Season chicken with salt and pepper. Add to pot and cook each side till golden brown then set aside to cool, later you will remove the skin and bones and shred the meat to finish cooking in the rouxe. Add 2 tbsps butter to pot to melt then add flour to make rouxe. It should appear as peanut butter. Add ground up veggies to pot. Let cook about 15 min stirring occasionally. Add chicken stock. May add up to 4 cups

if you like for a thinner rouxe. Add spices & salt to taste. Add shredded chicken & sausage. Let cook another 15 min stirring occasionally. And that’s that. Serve with rice, and garnish with parsley and sliced green onion. Again, a simple dish, full of flavor and Louisiana flair. This dish will certainly become a family favorite. Enjoy my Peeps. Much love. Jay Rinaldi is an avid SFGN reader, awesome cook, and local bartender extraordinaire.

Gays of Our Lives

New gay web soap ‘People You Know’ set to debut David-Elijah Nahmod “People You Know”, set to debut online in conjunction with New York City’s Pride celebration, is an impressively produced low budget web soap. The series co-stars John Dylan DeLaTorre and Baltimore Russell, who are a real life gay couple. They play Lucas and Monty, a gay couple in turmoil. DeLaTorre and Russell, who’ve been married for seven years, are also the writers. And the producers. “People You Know” is the first production of Orchard Winfield Productions, their recently formed production company. At it’s website, Orchard Winfield states that it’s mission is to “Address contemporary issues such as gender, race, sexuality, religion, and nationality. By working with new media it will allow us to connect with our audience without restriction.” Six twenty-minute episodes are being produced for “People You Know’s” freshman season. Web produced content is known for being produced on shoestring budgets, yet the premiere episode, made available to SFGN for viewing, is quite impressive. “People You Know” boasts strong acting and elegant production values — what viewers will see on screen is comparable to any major network offering. Some may feel that these aren’t people we know. Everyone in the thirtyish cast looks like a model. The characters are upscale. We don’t all get to live as they do, but there’s an enormous amount of pleasure to be found in tuning in to shows like this and pretending that we do. As the story begins, Lucas (DeLaTorre) and Monty (Russell) have just broken up, but they’re going to pretend to be together for one more day. This brave front is so they can attend a close friend’s wedding without putting a damper on the other couple’s nuptials. Best man Lucas is the best friend — and ex — of one of the grooms. Sounds complicated. Tune in tomorrow after a word from our sponsor... DeLaTorre and Russell chatted with SFGN from their home in New York City, where “People You Know” is filmed. Tell us who you guys are.

DeLaTorre: I’m a Jersey boy through and through. Since I was a kid I was very dramatic and loved being in school plays in grammar school and I found myself recreating iconic scenes in the living room. Because I had a strict Latin father, my creative dream wasn’t supported. So I shut down my hopes and whatever gay feelings I may have had were deeply suppressed. I was in my mid-20s when I finally came out. After I finished my school training — during that first year of training I was really broken down emotionally and began to confront my own personal inner demons and allowed myself to accept who I was — I got involved with quite a few theater productions, started working on some TV shows and soaps, and teamed up with Baltimore to produce an original play I had written called Endgames. From there, while auditioning and booking gigs, we developed one of our ideas and formed our own production company.

family, whether it’s the family you’re born into or the family you create within your circle of friends. We also wanted to steer away from the stereotypical portrayals of gay characters in the media. So we set out to make their orientation the third or fourth most interesting thing about them. We want to realistically represent the LGBT community truthfully, with all the good and the bad, while keeping the viewers captivated with good old sinful drama. The other thing that is very important to us is to provide visibility for out characters in media so that kids growing up in small towns will know that there is hope for them. The characters are upscale. How might blue-collar types relate to this series?

Russell: I’m originally from a small town in Texas and always knew that the small town life wasn’t for me. I knew that I was not quite like the other boys I grew up with and while I did play soccer and T-ball, I also took dance and drama classes. I went to a Catholic school and was teased and bullied for my perceived differences. I had no idea of what being gay meant until I was made fun of at school. The hardest part was having no one to look up to. There were no positive, out gay role models around. The rest of my school years were spent hiding who I was and just trying to make it out. That being said, my family and friends have always been very loving and supportive of my dreams. Without them I know I wouldn’t be where I am today. Tell us about the creation of Orchard Winfield. Any significance to the name?

DeLaTorre: Orchard is the name of the street I grew up on and Winfield is the name of the street Baltimore grew up on. We started the company to introduce new and creative ways of storytelling.

What’s it’s like to be both the stars and producers of your own series?

Russell: When we are on camera we are in full-on actor mode. Nothing else exists. It was challenging in the pilot because we were constantly being pulled and involved in every decision. By episode two we had brought on some great people who were lifesavers so we didn’t need to worry about every little detail and trusted them to stay within our vision and get things done the way we wanted. That allowed us more time to enjoy the moment and not have everything be such a whirlwind.

Describe the premise of the series and what you’re trying to convey to your audience?

DeLaTorre: The show is a prime time drama where the seven deadly sins corrupt a group of thirtysometing urbanites, destroying their chances for happiness as they strive to discover love and achieve their dreams while surviving the drama in New York City. We envision the series as five seasons, where each season deals with a certain theme. The first season is the idea of

Russell: We are acutely aware of how the characters might be perceived and have a few storylines coming up that talk about just this. Is there crossover appeal to straights? Will there be trans characters?

DeLaTorre: There is crossover appeal to straight fans. By now, everyone knows someone who is gay, whether it’s their brother, cousin, aunt, doctor, lawyer, friend and so on. The story we are telling is universal and everyone can find something relatable in each of the characters, no matter their orientation. Russell: We do plan on having trans characters appear as series regulars, but there are ten main series cast members so far. We have to let their stories play out before we bring on any new characters. And we want to find the right way to bring them into the show, not have a trans character just to have one. Each character has a full story we can tell, we don’t want to just have a background of the alphabet (LGBTQI, etc).

How difficult is it to fund a web series and earn your budget back?

DeLaTorre: We pursue all avenues to bring in funding. We are not a non-profit, though sometimes it feels that way. But every dollar we earn goes directly in the series. We are very fortunate so far with all the support we have received. When/where will “People You Know” be available?

Russell: After the two part pilot premiere on June 23, we will release the episodes starting Sunday June 29th on the series website. Each episode will be available to buy, including the entire season. DeLaTorre: We are looking into a possible DVD release later this year, we just want to make sure we have everything right before releasing it. Russell: We are working on getting some famous guest stars, but we don’t want to speak to early on any of them. We do have Pandora Boxx of RuPaul’s Drag Race play a twisted drag bartending version of herself, which is as hilarious as it sounds! You can find episodes of “People You Know” online at peopleyouknowtheseries.com.
