UGANDA ANTI-GAY RULING CRITICIZED AS ‘FLAWED’

1 2 3

(AP) KAMPALA, Uganda — Human Rights Watch is criticizing a Ugandan court’s decision against gay activists who sued a Ugandan official for violating their rights. The group said the court’s decision is “deeply flawed” and violates the activists’ right to freedom of assembly. Four Ugandan gay activists had challenged in court the legality of Ethics Minister Simon

Lokodo’s action to close their workshop and his threats to arrest the participants in 2012. A Ugandan judge ruled in favor of Lokodo, saying workshop participants were promoting homosexuality. Homosexuality is criminalized in Uganda, which in February passed a new law that strengthened penalties.

UK DOCTORS: SNIFF POPPERS AND YOU COULD GO BLIND (EDGE Media) Researchers in the United Kingdom say inhaling the 70s club drug “poppers,” or isopropyl nitrate, can seriously damage your eyes, thanks to its new formula. Reuters reports of a case study of a 30-yearold white man who lost vision in both eyes after inhaling poppers. Although researchers are unclear how this is happening, they did notice yellow spots on the macula deep inside the man’s eye. “Over the past 18 months or so I have

come across almost 10 patients with poppers maculopathy, whilst several years ago I had not even heard of the condition, same with a lot of my colleagues,” said Dr. Anna Gruener, a physician at Guy’s and St Mary’s Foundation Trust in London. Poppers are a liquid drug sold in small vials and inhaled on the dance floor or before sex for a short rush of euphoria. From our media partner EDGE.

OFFICIALS: TRANS GIRL MOVED TO MALE FACILITY (AP) - A transgender girl has been moved to Connecticut’s juvenile home for boys after she was accused of assault, the latest transfer of a troubled teenager who was sent to a psychiatric facility after supporters protested her confinement in a women’s prison without criminal charges. The Department of Children and Families said Sunday that the girl, identified only as Jane Doe, assaulted another youth and a staff member and

destroyed property at the Children’s Psychiatric Center in Middletown on Saturday night. Officials said there is no “suitable place” at the psychiatric facility “that can ensure the safety of youths and staff” and moved her to the nearby Juvenile Training School, Connecticut’s only secure facility for delinquent boys. She is in a single room separated from the other residents.

FORT LAUDERDALE VISITORS BUREAU COMES OUT FOR GAY MARRIAGE Jason Parsley

Last month Fort Lauderdale passed a resolution supporting marriage equality despite its Mayor, Jack Seiler, still being adamantly opposed. Now the local convention bureau, The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, is announcing its support for same-sex marriage as well. Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau President, Nicki E. Grossman, said in a prepared statement: “After years of seeking equal rights for the LGBT community in Florida, it is the right time to do the right thing and allow same sex marriage throughout the state. The rainbow flag flies loud and proud in Broward County and we can’t wait to celebrate the legalization of same-sex marriage with couples from all walks of life and from all over the country.” The CVB has a long history marketing to the LGBT community. They were the first in the country to have a dedicated department supporting LGBT tourism and their first LGBT ad campaign dates back to 1996. According to the press release more than

$1.3 million LGBT people visited Broward County in 2013. “We’ve come a long way in a short period and we hope the state will follow our lead and welcome the LGBT community with their wish to be married and have their marriages recognized here with warm, open and loving arms,” said Richard Gray, managing director, LGBT market, Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

HOT COP OF CASTRO Police officer’s photo goes viral CNN Photos: CNN.com

If a blue-eyed, chisel-cheeked mugshot can make an Internet sensation of a criminal suspect, can the law be far behind? In this case, it’s a lawman — specifically, a San Francisco street cop whose in-uniform images are making him a cyber-celebrity with a badge. San Francisco Police Officer Chris Kohrs — the “Hot Cop of Castro” to his fans and friends — became a viral sensation after a stranger created a Facebook page in his honor, nicknaming him after Castro Street, where Kohrs was posted at the time. The Facebook page has received close to 19,000 likes in about three weeks. “I was out there one day doing traffic control and some guys asked if they could have photos of me and I consented. It kind of went viral from there,” the 36-year-old Kohrs said in a phone interview with CNN. Kohrs’ Facebook page creator Nathan Tatterson told CNN it all started with his friend’s photo of Kohrs sitting on his motorcycle. “Other people in the neighborhood starting recognizing the ‘Hot Cop of Castro’ and started taking and posting their own photos,” said Tatterson. “Once people started recognizing Officer Kohrs, they started chatting with him and realized that he wasn’t just a pretty face. He was funny, nice, respectful, with a huge dose of charm and humility. He also clearly loved his job.” User comments ranged from praise (“One of San Francisco’s Police Finest!”) to a touch risqué (“Crime has increased in the Castro with men of all stripes begging to be arrested and punished on the spot.”).

Kohrs, who has been on the police force for six years, said it was “all a shock” to him. “I’ve never met the person that created the Facebook page. I’m not even on Facebook,” he said laughing. His new-found fame follows on the trail of convicted felon Jeremy Meeks, whose mugshot stirred a collective swoon nationwide after authorities in Stockton, California, posted it on social media in June. In his case, Kohrs sees an unintended, broader benefit of the online publicity for one cop on the street. “It has strengthened the bond between the community and the police,” he says. Kohrs laughs at the suggestion of becoming a model or an actor -- he is dedicated to his job of service as an officer, including responding to 911 calls, and he takes the work seriously. “We are called upon to respond to some pretty bad situations and although we can’t reverse what has been done, we can make a bad situation better. We can make the city a better place to live, and I think police officers have a big impact on the health and safety of the community,” he said. “I’m real happy here. If it’s going to be this good I’m going to stay,” he said. His Facebook fan base includes both women and men equally, with the most-repeated questions being whether he is straight or gay, single or married. Straight, single, no kids, he said. And for the record: Kohrs enjoys dining out, watching movies, snowboarding, riding motorcycles, traveling and water skiing. CNN is a media partner of SFGN. soflagaynews //

COLORADO CLERK OK’D TO GIVE GAY MARRIAGE LICENSES

(AP) A Boulder County clerk who has been issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in defiance of Colorado’s gay-marriage ban can continue, a judge ruled Thursday. Boulder County Judge Andrew Hartman decided county clerk Hillary Hall can ignore a federal stay on a ruling from the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver that states cannot set gender requirements for marriage. The judge said gay marriage is still technically illegal in Colorado but that Hall’s behavior was not harming anyone. But he said all who receive a license should be warned that they could still be invalid if a judge finds after trial that Hall didn’t have the authority to issue them.

A

ndrew Hartman,

Boulder County Judge

Hartman also noted that every judge - including one in Colorado the previous afternoon - in the past year has ruled that gay marriage bans are unconstitutional and that Colorado’s prohibition is “hanging by a thread.” Hall has issued more than 100 same-sex marriage licenses since that ruling on June 25. Republican state Attorney General John Suthers sued Hall, the only clerk in Colorado who defied the federal stay. Hall argued that despite the stay, Colorado’s gay-marriage ban violates the U.S. Constitution. Suthers said Hall’s behavior was causing “legal chaos” while the issue works its way through the courts.

OP GOVS BACKING OFF GAY MARRIAGE

(AP) – NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Deep in the nation’s Bible Belt, new signs emerged this weekend of an evolution among Republican governors on gay marriage, an explosive social issue that has divided American families and politics for years. While the Republican Party’s religious conservatives continue to fight against same-sex marriage, its governors appear to be backing off their opposition— in their rhetoric, at least. For some, the shift may be more a matter of tone than substance as the GOP tries to attract new voters ahead of the midterm elections. Nonetheless, it is dramatic turn for a party that has long been defined by social conservative values. “I don’t think the Republican Party is fighting it,” Wisconsin’s Republican Gov. Scott Walker said of gay marriage. He spoke with The Associated Press during an interview this weekend at the National Governors Association in Nashville. “I’m not saying it’s not important,” continued Walker, who is considering a 2016 presidential bid should he survive his reelection test this fall. “But Republicans haven’t been talking about this. We’ve been talking about economic and fiscal issues. It’s those on the left that are pushing it.” Walker, like other ambitious Republican governors, is trying to strike a delicate balance. His comments come just days after he formally appealed a federal judge’s ruling striking down Wisconsin’s ban on same-sex marriages, a ban he supported. But after his party’s disastrous 2012 election, the Republican National Committee commissioned a report calling for more “inclusive and welcoming” tones on divisive social issues — particularly those “involving the treatment and the rights of gays.” Photo: credit of CNN.com

Walker explained his court appeal simply as his obligation as governor to defend the state’s constitution. Other Republican governors, however, including New Jersey’s Republican Gov. Chris Christie, opted against appealing a similar ruling in his state, clearing the way for gay marriage to become legal there. But his decision came only after he vetoed his state legislature’s initial effort to legalize the practice. Christie said that same-sex marriage “is a settled issue” in New Jersey, but that the rest of the country would resolve it in time. A Gallup poll found in May that national support for same-sex marriage reached an all-time high of 55 percent. That includes 30 percent of Republicans and nearly 8 in 10 young adults from both parties.

TAH SAME-SEX MARRIAGES ALREADY ONE ARE VALID, APPEALS COURT RULES (CNN) – A federal appeals court ruled late Friday that about 1,300 gay and lesbian marriages performed earlier this year must be recognized by Utah. However, the judges stayed their order until July 21 to give the state time to file an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court for emergency action. The justices would be asked to delay recognition of those same-sex marriages until the overall constitutional issue is fully decided by the high court, a process that may not happen for a year or more. The same appeals court late last month ruled Utah’s voter approved Amendment 3 violated the equal protection rights of same-sex couples. The law currently defines marriage only between one man and one woman. A group of plaintiffs then asked the court to order the state to recognize those marriage licenses already issued in December and January. About 1,300 same-sex Photo: credit of CNN.com couples obtained marriage licenses in the 17 days after a federal judge ruled on December 20 that Utah’s ban was unconstitutional. Those marriages were stopped after a temporary stay was put in place by the Supreme Court. That was the issue in Friday’s court action.

TUDENT: I WAS EXPELLED FROM OKLAHOMA SCHOOL FOR MARRYING ANOTHER WOMAN (CNN) -- First there was friendship. Then there was romance. After that there was marriage. And now, at what would have been a few weeks from her senior year in college, Christian Minard finds herself expelled from school -- because the person she married is another woman. In a letter from earlier this month that Minard shared with CNN, an administrator at Southwestern Christian University noted that he’d been told of Minard’s same-sex marriage and saw pictures of it posted to Facebook. Such a union is in apparent conflict with the “lifestyle covenant” of the university “that all students must agree and sign,” he added. “As an American and a Christian, I do respect your choice,” the administrator wrote. “(But) I have to uphold the Lifestyle Covenant at SCU and confront you with our position. “Due to this recent event, you will not be able to attend SCU in the future.”

ELAWARE CLERKS EXPECT FEWER SAMEEX WEDDINGS (AP) - WILMINGTON, Del. — More than 2,000 same-sex couples have been married in Delaware in the last 12 months, but court clerks in the state expect the pace to slow going forward. Delaware became the 11th state to legalize same-sex weddings under a law that took effect in July 2013. In the 12 months ending June 30, court clerks in the state issued 2,092 marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. More than 80 percent of those licenses were issued in the first six months the law took effect. Court clerks expect the pace to slow further as nearby states including Pennsylvania and New Jersey have subsequently legalized same-sex marriage, reducing the need for out-of-staters to come to Delaware for a license. ‘CELEBRATION OF FRIENDS’ THIS WEEKEND IN ORLANDO

(SFGN) The 2014 Celebration of Friends takes place this weekend. Attendees can expect big changes, as the gathering will happen in Orlando, rather than South Florida. Event organizer Thomas Pence is excited about holding the event in Central Florida. “In the past, many of the hotels in South Florida weren’t that friendly to gay people. One hotel didn’t live up to its contract. Upon our arrival, we were informed they would only feed half of us. Another kicked us out of the pool at 6 p.m. because the security guard didn’t like to see two men hugging. We stayed at the Sheraton for so many years because it was the only hotel to live up to its promises,” Pence said. This year’s Celebration of Friends will be held from July 17-20 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando at SeaWorld. The event is a chance for

mature gay men, and those who love them, to meet and enjoy each other’s company. Last year’s celebration was attended by gay men from France, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Japan, Finland, Ecuador and other locations throughout the world. With such a diverse gathering of men, this event is the perfect place for gays to meet. The oldest participant was 93, while the youngest was 22. The average age of the nearly 500 participants was 55 years old. DANCERS DECRY PROPOSED UK BALLROOM ‘BAN’

(AP) It takes two to tango - but does a samesex couple qualify? Britain’s governing body of ballroom dancing has stirred controversy by proposing to change the definition of a competing partnership to be “one man and one lady” - a move that equality advocates and same-sex dancers called discriminatory Friday. The world of competitive ballroom dancing - satirized famously in Baz Luhrmann’s film “Strictly Ballroom” - has traditionally been dominated by couples made up of a man and a woman, although a small number of same-

news national STUDY FINDS LGB PEOPLE MORE LIKELY TO COMMIT SUICIDE AFTER SEEKING HELP FROM RELIGION Sasha Razumikhin

Put simply, god isn’t helping LGB people deal with their issues. At least that’s what the results of a new study from the Williams Institute says. It’s called “The Role of Help-Seeking in Preventing Suicide Attempts among Lesbians, Gay Men, and Bisexuals,” and is co-authored by Ilan H. Meyer with the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, Merilee Teylan with the Medical School at Harvard University, and Sharon Schwartz with the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University. According to the researchers, this study is the first of its kind to examine how mental health treatment correlates with suicide attempts among a “diverse group of LGB adults.” According to the research, only about 16 percent of LGB people who made a serious suicide attempt sought mental health treatment from a health professional prior to the attempt. About 13 percent sought religious or spiritual treatment prior to the attempt. Sounds normal so far, but here’s the kicker: The study found that “seeking treatment from a mental health or medical provider did not reduce the odds of a suicide attempt.” And if respondents reached out to clergy of some sort, things got worse.

8

// 7.16.2014 // SFGN.com //

“Respondents who sought mental health or medical treatment at some time prior to their suicide attempt (or, among those who did not attempt suicide, prior to the age when suicide might have been attempted) were as likely as respondents who did not seek any mental health treatment to have a suicide attempt or serious suicide attempt after this time. However, counseling from a religious or spiritual advisor was associated with worse outcomes. Compared with individuals who did not seek help at all, those who sought help from a religious or spiritual advisor were more likely later to attempt suicide.”

soflagaynews //

Let’s repeat that: If respondents sought help from spiritual guides, they were MORE likely to commit suicide than those who sought no treatment at all. “The findings are troubling because seeking treatment is a recommended suicide prevention strategy and this study results show no more positive effect for people who sought treatment,” said co-author Ilan H. Meyer, Ph.D., Williams Senior Scholar of Public Policy. “More troubling is the finding that individuals who sought religious or spiritual treatment had higher odds of later attempting suicide than those who did not seek treatment at all” Other finds: Of the LGB respondents, 17 percent reported a suicide attempt and 8 percent reported a serious suicide attempt over their lifetime. On average, the age of serious suicide attempts coincided with major coming out milestones, with first suicide attempt occurring at mean age of 17

SouthFloridaGayNews

A significantly larger proportion of white LGBs (58 percent) sought treatment from medical and mental health professionals prior to a suicide attempt than black (12 percent) and Latino (17 percent) LGBs, but significantly more blacks (24 percent) than white (8 percent) and Latino (7 percent) LGBs sought treatment from religious or spiritual advisors prior to a suicide attempt. “More studies are needed to assess the efficacy of treatment for LGB people with suicidal ideation in preventing future suicide attempts. But, even without further study, public health officials and health service providers ought to ensure that LGB individuals who seek mental health treatment, whether it is in medical or religious settings, receive competent mental health services that is relevant to their needs,” said Meyer. FOURTH GENERATION OF HIV TESTING ALLOWS EARLIER DETECTION Christiana Lilly

Thanks to advances in HIV testing, labs can detect the disease in a person’s blood up to two weeks earlier than before. In the fourth generation of HIV tests, a protein that lives on the virus can be detected and therefore a diagnosis can be given even earlier. “They’re making more and more breakthroughs in the treatment and detection of the virus. Everything that comes out just makes it easier and easier for us as practitioners to help people,” said Sheryl Zayas, DO, a primary care physician at Care Resource. While the test has been around for about 10 years, it wasn’t until National HIV Testing Day in June that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made an official recommendation to labs to use the fourth generation of HIV testing. The third generation test could take 20 to 30 days to detect antibodies from HIV in the blood sample. With the fourth generation test, the process can detect proteins present on the virus as early as 15 days. These p24 proteins are some of the first traces of the disease.

10

// 7.16.2014 // SFGN.com //

Every day that the disease is able to be detected means people can be told of their status earlier — according to the CDC, about half of new HIV infections every year are transmitted by people who unknowingly passed on the virus. Also, since 2006, when the CDC made the recommendation for Americans 16 to 64 to be tested yearly, people who don’t know their status has decreased from 20 to 16 percent. “When people are first infected, that’s actually when they are the most infectious to other people,” Zayas said. Because it can take time for signs of the virus to appear in blood tests, one can unknowingly infect a number of people. For those who believe they may have been exposed to the virus, it’s recommended to be tested three times to make sure you have an accurate diagnosis -at six weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. Doctors recommend getting tested for HIV at least once a year, and even more frequently for those who are at high risk of contracting the disease.

THE END OF ENDA? ACLU & BILLY BEAN GETS MAJOR 6 LGBT ORGS PULL SUPPORT LEAGUE POST Bobby McGuire

The beleaguered Employment NonDiscrimination Act (ENDA) hit an unexpected stumbling block Tuesday, when six national gay rights organizations led by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) publicly withdrew their support for what was once hailed as landmark legislation to protect LGBT individuals in the workplace, citing objections to the bill’s religious exemptions. In a statement signed by the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and Transgender Law Center, the ACLU announced that they are withdrawing support for ENDA. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force filed a separate but similar statement. The organizations’ argument against legislation they once strongly supported stems from a provision in the bill that allows some employers to continue to discriminate based on sexual orientation and gender identity on religious grounds. “Federal legislation to protect LGBT people from workplace discrimination is way beyond overdue, but Congress has no place giving religiously affiliated employers a license to discriminate against LGBT workers,” said Laura W. Murphy, director of the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office. “We can no longer support a bill that treats LGBT discrimination as different and somehow more legitimate than other forms of discrimination.” The Human Rights Campaign, who remains the only major LGBT rights organization supporting the bill, issued a short statement: “HRC supports ENDA because it will provide essential workplace protections to millions of LGBT people.” The move to withdraw support stems from the controversial U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Hobby Lobby case that allows closely held for-profit corporations to deny coverage for contraceptives as mandated by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), on the grounds of religious objections. The decision was an interpretation of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which prevents the government from enacting laws that substantially burden a person’s exercise of free religion. From the joint statement issued by the ACLU, GLAD, NCLR, Transgender Law Center and Lambda Legal: “The provision in the current version of

Associated Press

the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) that allows religious organizations to discriminate based on sexual orientation and gender identity has long been a source of significant concern to us. Given the types of workplace discrimination we see increasingly against LGBT people, together with the calls for greater permission to discriminate on religious grounds that followed immediately upon the Supreme Court’s decision last week in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, it has become clear that the inclusion of this provision is no longer tenable. It would prevent ENDA from providing protections that LGBT people desperately need and would make very bad law with potential further negative effects. Therefore, we are announcing our withdrawal of support for the current version of ENDA.” In a separate statement release by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Executive Director Rea Carey said: “The morning after the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby ruling, we all woke up in a changed and intensified landscape of broad religious exemptions being used as an excuse to discriminate. We are deeply concerned that ENDA’s broad exemption will be used as a similar license to discriminate across the country. We are concerned that these types of legal loopholes could negatively impact other issues affecting LGBT people and their families including marriage, access to HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention and access to other reproductive health services. As one of the lead advocates on this bill for 20 years, we do not take this move lightly but we do take it unequivocally - we now oppose this version of ENDA because of its too-broad religious exemption. We cannot be complicit in writing such exemptions into federal law.” ENDA, which passed the Senate in 2013, has been stalled in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has refused to put it forth for a vote. In June, President Barack Obama announced that he will issue an executive order that would bar federal contractors from discriminating against LGBT employees. The statement release Tuesday by the ACLU opposed any inclusion of a religious exemption in the order. EDGE Media and SFGN are media partners.

(AP) Major League Baseball has appointed former outfielder Billy Bean, who came out as gay after his playing career, to serve as a consultant in guiding the sport toward greater inclusion and equality. Commissioner Bud Selig made the announcement Tuesday before the All-Star game. Joining Bean and Selig at a news conference was Lutha Burke, the sister of Glenn Burke, who was the first MLB player to come out as gay after retiring. Burke died in 1995. Bean will provide guidance and training related to efforts designed to support the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community throughout baseball. He’ll work with players and front office personnel through the major

and minor leagues. Bean played for Detroit, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego over parts of six seasons and hit .226. He dedicated his autobiography to Burke.

Fort Lauderdale’s best known public relations firm has collapsed with one principal charging his long time partner plundered the company. The charges are contained in a lawsuit Gary Bitner filed this week against his former partner at Bitner Goodman – Michael Goodman. Goodman is alleged to have stolen everything down to the company espresso machine….Really! “I was a 50 percent equal owner, so I was entitled to certain things, but I didn’t leave him in a situation where he wasn’t operational… You could think of it like a bad marriage where something just changes. There’s not always one thing,” Goodman is quoted by the South Florida Business Journal. “I made it clear I didn’t want to be in this partnership anymore.” Bitner Goodman has been one of the leading PR firms in Florida with such clients as WinnDixie, Simon Property Group, Tri-Rail and the Seminole Tribe. A former newspaper reporter, Bitner is a decades-long fixture in South Florida business and political circles. Goodman announced last month he was

leaving to form his own business after 10 years with Bitner. According to the lawsuit, the pair each owned half of the company. In the lawsuit, Bitner said when he “arrived at the office the morning of June 12, 2014, he was confronted with a nearly empty office. “Through the review of surveillance video, Bitner has since discovered that, under the cover of darkness on June 11, 2014, Goodman, together with a moving company and several employees including (Beth) Zuckerkorn and (Gene) Broyles, waited until the office had closed for the day—and then looted it.” Zuckerkorn was vice president of graphic communications. Broyles was the company’s staff accountant and office manager. The lawsuit alleges that the video shows Goodman and the employees of their firm removing “three pieces of framed art work (and) ….all Company checks and accounting records; office furniture including desks, tables, chairs, printers, televisions, phones, a credenza, and a light fixture; 16 file cabinets and their files; a binding machine with its supplies;

all of Bitner Goodman’s art department computers; Bitner’s personal items; more than 15 computers and a server; a vast array of supplies; a shredder; a coffee machine and an espresso machine; and petty cash.” The suit also claims that Goodman, Zuckerkorn and Broyles invoiced companies for money that should have gone to the business, Bitner Goodman. They also have plotted to steal all Bitner’s clients. It even claims that Goodman turned off the company’s Twitter and other Internet accounts. Gary Bitner Goodman, Zuckerkorn and Broyles are named in the suit. PRIDE SOUTH FLORIDA REBUILD: RESIGNATIONS & REORGANIZATION Christiana Lilly

Two more board members of Pride South Florida resigned from their posts, sending in letters prior to their meeting on July 8. John Tupper and Sonia Aguero are the third and fourth board members to resign in 2014, following Corrie Boyd in June and Marc Hansen earlier this year. In an email to SFGN, Tupper wrote that his initial resignation was “due to Corrie Boyd who recently left two weeks.” He decided to leave the board and focus on his personal life. “Those plans don’t include PSF at the moment. So for me it was a personal choice. I love PSF. Rocky is a great leader and I wish the board all the best,” he wrote. Aguero told SFGN in an email, “I will not put anyone in the ‘hot’ seat but as I’m sure you are aware of past turmoils with board members. Truly I’m just burnt out from it all and need to step aside and look at PSF from the outside.” She also added that it’s easier to criticize board members rather than getting involved and encourages more people to volunteer. “There are wonderful, committed individuals on the board and it is easy to moan, groan and yes, bitch, about things that go wrong from people that have no idea what it is like to put it all together, the hard work and time out of our lives,” she said. Boyd allegedly signed talent contracts for Stonewall Pride, without the consent of the president or the board, and according to the bylaws, only the president can do so. At the July 8 meeting, the board accepted his verbal resignation. The record states it

was for “behavior against the better intent of this board” and “partial damage to this organization.” Fellow board member, John Fugate, who also worked at South Florida Gay News, called for his resignation before Boyd resigned on his own accord. Fugate is also calling for the resignation of Jeff Sterling, whom he claims used his personal and Pride South Florida email for the personal gain of his business. Just before the motion, Sterling abruptly walked out, along with two other board members who work with him, and a third person who carpooled with him to the meeting. “I think it’s very interesting everyone who works with him is leaving,” treasurer Bonnie Maicher said as they walked out. A volunteer was upset with the call for another resignation, saying it would alienate anyone else from being a part of Pride South Florida. “There’s been too many shady people on this board the last few years,” Fugate said, then removed his motion. In July and August, board members and executive committee members will be nominated and voted on. Interested board members must have attended three consecutive board meetings to run for a spot, and executive members must have served on the board for at least a year. “Health Care For All” has been a battle cry heard in the United States for many years. Fortunately the hope that all people, regardless of their income, will have access to health insurance has become a reality. In 2010 the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. The Affordable Care Act is aimed at reforming the American health care system. The Act’s main focus is on providing more Americans with access to affordable health insurance and improving the quality of health care and health insurance. The law also expands Medicaid and improves Medicare. However, there are many problems that Americans face as they attempt to access this proposed affordable care. As of July 1st 2014, people living with HIV who receive Medicaid are required to access Florida’s Statewide Medicaid Managed Care (SMMC) – Managed Medical Assistance (MMA) Program. Because of this program, the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) had to change how individuals receive their health care from the Florida Medicaid Program. Medicaid recipients who must enroll in MMA programs will receive all health care services through a managed care plan. People with limited income, who rely on Medicaid, have many unanswered questions about what exactly the Statewide MMA program will do. Keep in mind that MMA plans will cover services such as doctors’ visits, prescriptions and hospital stays. Recently, a meeting of people living with HIV, who are receiving Medicaid, was held at Poverello. At that meeting attendees reported that they have been left largely

soflagaynews //

in the dark about what is going on. For example, they stated that they received only a short list of MMA plans to choose from, but they don’t know if their primary care doctors are included in the offered plans. There are no lists available that provide an explanation of what medications may or may not be paid for in these plans (typically called a formulary). There has been no information about whether or not people will have to make co-pays for doctor visits or if there will be co-pays for medications. And lastly no one knows whether or not there will be a monthly premium to be paid for the insurance plan they are required to enroll in. This is a concern because typically managed care insurance requires that a premium be paid. Fortunately the Broward, Fort Lauderdale HIV Planning Council (HIVPC) has been made aware of these urgent and disturbing issues by the Community Empowerment Committee, which is its consumer advisory group. The HIVPC is reacting to the demand for answers by hosting an upcoming forum with the specific goal of answering these important questions. Poverello cares about this issue because we serve the people living with HIV who are most likely to be Medicaid recipients. Additionally, Poverello is concerned not only about nutrition and wellness but about the overall health of the people we serve. To that end we are helping to publicize this upcoming forum. Check for the events time and location by going to www.brhpc.org. Click on the “HIV Planning Council” header for all information pertaining to calendars, meetings, and current/upcoming events.

SFGN INTERVIEWS DOLLY

COUNTRY LEGEND TALKS NEW ALBUM AND LADY GAGA Michael Cook Not many performers can be called a true icon; Dolly Parton is the exception to that rule. From movies to music to Dollywood, Parton has managed to stay relevant and adored throughout her career. Dolly chatted with SFGN about what we can expect from her new album “Blue Smoke,” what touring is like for her nowadays, and what surprising artist she would like to collaborate with. Why is your new album Ò Blue SmokeÓ so special? I always get excited with any album that I do. I think that the one I just did, is the best one yet! I wake up with new dreams every day! I wanted to do an album with all the colors of my career; gospel music, mountain music, doing some covers, some other people’s songs, they were fun to do. I work with a lot of the same musicians that perform on my road show and we get excited together knowing that we get to keep performing together. It’s just so much fun to write em’, and get out on the road and perform em’! When you look back at a young Dolly Parton, what is a thing or two that you would tell that Dolly now? I would tell her I’m pretty proud of her! When you get older you really reflect and look back? I realize how fortunate I am about having my dreams come true, because so many can’t say that. Many people are just as talented as I am, and they may not have made it. Kris Kristofferson sang “Why Me Lord” and that’s what I think. That little girl that headed out of the Smoky Mountains that moved here

14

// 7.16.2014 // SFGN.com //

in 1964, now here at 68 years old, I still feel like that little girl. I love the music, I love to write, and hope to do this till I keel over dead in about thirty years [laughs]. As a songwriter, what songs of yours are you the most proud of? My songs are like my children. I hope to have em’ to support me when I’m old [laughs]. They’re really like your kids, you love em’ all. I really love the song “If I Had Wings.” I like the songs that I sang growing up. I love the little song “Miss You Miss Me,” it came from a really personal place. So many people are divorcing, and the kids end up suffering the most. I enjoyed the rewrite of “Lay Your Hands On Me,” the Bon Jovi song, and the Bob Dylan song “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.” It’s fun to experience new things. What is touring like now for you? It’s better now; I have a built in audience, I know I’m gonna have a crowd, I used to worry if anyone was gonna show up [laughs]! It’s a lot of fun for me still. I love the audience. I love to perform, and I love to write more than anything. It’s like an all around great experience for me. I still enjoy it as much as I did in the old days. WhatÕ s it like bringing music closer to perform at home? I know everyone in the area can relate to my music; they know me. I grew up in those mountains across from North Carolina; bluegrass, country flavored things. I hope they enjoy watching me perform it as much as I enjoyed writing em’!

soflagaynews //

How do you get ready to tour? It’s really a good year and a half of work before hitting the road. You’ve got to decide if you want to even do it, first of all. Second, you have to decide what the show is going to be and what it needs to be. Then you get with promoters and the people who can try to sell it. Then you work for weeks and weeks rehearsing, and only after you really hit the road can you rest! After your lighting, sound, you do the sound check and the show at night. In my off time, I rest, read, things like that. It’s a lot of work, but it’s a joy.

out to people all the time. If I got together with Lady Gaga, we could be “Gaga And GooGoo” [laughs].

How do you stay healthy on the road? When we travel overseas we have our own caterer. Some people are vegan, some people have health restrictions. We have great people that provide some great food, and some junk too when we want it. After the show, I can just lay around and rest my voice. I don’t do interviews during the day when I tour either. We’ve all worked together a long time on the road, and we have to take care of ourselves. The younger ones can get a little rowdy, but they pay the price; they can afford the hangover [laughs].

How are you able to stay so loved and so relevant? People are always gonna be people. We are gonna have the same thoughts, heartaches, faith in love, family, love things like that. I love life and kept a good attitude about it. I’ve always said I had more guts than talent, and I just love people and allowed people to know me. I think they think of me as an aunt or as a sister, and I get younger fans, because some of the younger ones have their parents listening to me. After all, I was “Hannah Montana’s” aunt.

What are some of your highlights from performing at the Grammy Awards? Any dream collaborators? I’m always thrilled to be nominated and be a part of the whole show, but when you win it’s even better! I was always proud of my “The Grass Is Blue” Grammy personally. My dream collaborator on stage? Well, you know in Nashville we have these famous treats called “Goo Goo Clusters.” I send them

WhatÕ s the story behind the song Ò Banks Of The OhioÓ ? All of my life I’ve been singing that song and it was a folk ballad. I just always liked it and it was such a man’s song about a guy who killed his girlfriend. I decided that I was going to write a part like I was a reporter or a writer, who would be seeing it from that point of view. It makes it easier for a woman to sing it.

This is your 42 studio album; how has the recording process changed? Everything is so different than when I came to Nashville. You would go into a studio for a three hour session, most of it was live, people didn’t do all of the stuff that they do now. You don’t even have to be in the studio now, you can sing from your living room! When I record, I like to go in with my band, the same people that I travel with. I still like doing it the way we used to years ago, I’m just

an old timer. I think the technology is great, but I love to feel the music and work with the musicians like we used to. What does Dolly Parton do on her downtime? Well, I’m close to my family. I’ll baby sit my nieces and nephews, my grand nieces and nephews. We get our golf carts, pack a picnic, and my husband and I head out in our RV. We go down on a riverbank, I cook, I really just enjoy time with family. Did you have an Ò a-ha momentÓ with Ò Blue SmokeÓ ? That would be doing the Bon Jovi song on this album and turning it into a gospel song, with their permission and help. I called Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora personally, and the three of us got together. They gave me their thoughts and it was gonna be a big surprise to everyone. I heard it years ago and thought that it sounded so gospel! You have such a gay fan base, to many of us you are a virtual gay icon. What are your thoughts on how far things have come? I think they knew from the beginning that they’ve been held back, judgment has been passed. I love everybody. I look for the light in everyone and think that they should shine! It’s no one’s place to judge. God loves us all and people know that I’m open and accepting. Any advice for new artists? I try not to give advice, just pass on information. To thine own self be true! You need to know your talents, protect them, fight for them. If you are that good and you have

that much faith, chances are it will happen. If you are dreaming an impossible dream, you can know that it’s ok to change dreams midstream. Rework it and then apply what you’ve learned to a new dream. How has it been to watch how big social media has become with the recording industry and with music in general? You can cover more things in ten minutes than you could in ten years now. I try to surround myself with younger people who know that medium. I’m as old as yesterday, but I’m as new as tomorrow. I am thrilled to still be hangin’ in there! Have you found the love of your life? Fifty years ago I met, and 48 years ago I married my husband [Carl Dean]. I’ve known some really great loves though. Everything may not be a love affair, but I’ve had relationships with so many people. Kenny Rogers for example, our friendship, its a business relationship, but we love each other, I’ve had some wonderful people in my life through the years. WhatÕ s your writing routine? I write all kinds of ways. In the middle of the night, if it’s something that I dreamed, if I am taking a bath, I have a tape recorder nearby or a notepad. I can write anywhere really, anytime for any reason. Sometimes, I plan in advance to take two weeks to just write, don’t call me, and I just write in my old mountain home or lake house. I just let it flow and write till I get tired of it. Then I come back home. I usually take my old set of fingernails off, get a new set put back on, and then get back at it!

feature GAY RUGBY TEAM WINS HISTORIC MATCH, AIMS TO ATTACK HOMOPHOBIA Wesley Wright

Rugby is by far the most popular sport in Australia, and the Sydney Convicts hope to use a recent win as a springboard to attack a bigger issue — homophobia in sports. The Convicts, composed entirely of gay men, beat the Warriors of Macquarie University 30-12 last month, the first triumph for a gay rugby team in the professional realm. Erik Denson, who played for the Convicts for four years before a wrist injury ended his career, took special pride in the win and acknowledged that it came over a solid opponent, one that participates in mainstream rugby. “The team is part of a university,” he said. “Universities always have strong teams.” Rugby isn’t exactly the most welcoming environment for gay men. And Australian rugby is no different — it’s the reason that the Sydney Convicts even exist. Many gay players leave other mainstream rugby teams because they feel alienated. Denson, who played rugby in high school, says that even though other players may not be doing it on purpose, it is an issue. “It becomes tiring, being the butt of all the gay jokes,” he said. “When men make fun each other, they use homosexual slurs. I don’t think mean to be harmful, they just don’t know the impact that has.” Gay rugby provides a place of solace for many men like Denson, who came out in tenth grade (while living in Canada) and ended up having to switch schools because of the response from his classmates.

This August, as many as 65 teams from around the globe will compete in the Bingham Cup, the premier event for gay rugby. Denson says that the Cup might be a step in the direction of decreasing homophobia in Australian rugby and the country at large. “Sydney will be on fire,” Denson claimed, adding that Australia is expecting around 1,000 players to participate in the Cup. “This could be a really good opportunity to try and change team sports around the world.” A research team in Australia has launched a study on the breadth of just how impactful homophobia is in sports. Anyone is welcome to participate, and according to Denson, around 1,400 Americans already have. “It is really important that people share experiences. That’s the only way we can create studies and organizations.” The Convicts also were lauded by a man whose endorsement could spearhead their movement. Rugby legend John Eales, made it clear that he was in full support the initiative to remove the stigma that gay men carry in Australian sports. “I am very proud of the Convicts for making history while also challenging stereotypes around gay men,” said Eales, a straight native Australian. “Sports can and must lead society and be welcoming for everyone,” he added. “It’s always disappointing to hear stories of people who don’t play sports because they fear discrimination.”

ARCHIE DIES

SHOT SAVING GAY BEST FRIEND Associated Press (AP) - Archie Andrews will die taking a bullet for his gay best friend. The famous freckle-faced comic book icon is meeting his demise in Wednesday’s installment of “Life with Archie” when he intervenes in an assassination attempt on Kevin Keller, Archie Comics’ first openly gay character. Andrews’ death, which was first announced in April, will mark the conclusion of the series that focuses on grown-up renditions of Andrews and his Riverdale pals. “The way in which Archie dies is everything that you would expect of Archie,” said Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics publisher and coCEO. “He dies heroically. He dies selflessly. He dies in the manner that epitomizes not only the best of Riverdale but the best of all of us.

It’s what Archie has come to represent over the past almost 75 years.” Keller’s character first joined Veronica Lodge, Betty Cooper, Jughead Jones and Reggie Mantle in the Archie Comics spin-off “Veronica” in 2010. He later appeared in his own solo title. In “Life with Archie,” Keller is a married military veteran and newly elected senator who’s pushing for more gun control in Riverdale after his husband was involved in a shooting. “We wanted to do something that was impactful that would really resonate with the world and bring home just how important Archie is to everyone,” said Goldwater. “That’s how we came up with the storyline of saving Kevin. He could have saved Betty.

He could have saved Veronica. We get that, but metaphorically, by saving Kevin, a new Riverdale is born.” Who shot Archie? Goldwater isn’t spoiling the killer, only teasing it’s a stalker who wanted to take Keller down. Archie’s final moments will be detailed in “Life with Archie” No. 36, while issue No. 37 will jump forward a year and focus on the Riverdale gang honoring the legacy of their red-headed pal, who first appeared in comics in 1941 and went on to become a colorful icon of wholesomeness. Other incarnations of Andrews will continue to live on in Archie Comics series. In recent years, deaths of high-profile

soflagaynews //

comic book characters like Peter “SpiderMan” Parker and Steve “Captain America” Rogers have made headlines and garnered intense reaction from fans. Goldwater notes that Andrews’ passing isn’t just a publicity stunt but also a lesson about gun violence and a declaration of diversity in the new age of Archie Comics. “Archie is not a superhero like all the rest of the comic book characters,” said Goldwater. “He’s human. He’s a person. When you wound him, he bleeds. He knows that. If anything, I think his death is more impactful because of that. We hope by showing how something so violent can happen to Archie, that we can - in some way - learn from him.”

MEDICAL POT ALMOST AT OUR DOORSTEP Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

Gay men and women love pot. We know that. We have been smoking for years, recreationally and medically. We know how many of our friends used cannabis to offset the wasting syndrome of AIDS. When we turn out to vote in November, we are going to vote overwhelmingly for Amendment 2. But here is my message to all of you cannabis consumers. Hang on. Wait. Medical marijuana is not yet legal in Florida. You would not know that by the some of the business scams materializing across the state. You can help make marijuana legal in Florida by voting for Amendment 2 this November. It needs 60 percent to pass. If approved, the state Department of Health will be charged with establishing rules and regulations governing the lawful distribution and sale of medical marijuana in Florida. Nevertheless, misrepresentations of fact and misstatements of law are being sold to the public by people trying to make money off the ensuing ‘Green Rush.’ It’s a scammer’s universe. Beware. You are being sold a false bill of goods. No one can issue you a valid ‘medical marijuana identification card.’ But one company in Jacksonville, Health Law Services, is trying to do just that. It’s worthless, and a ticket to jail. The Florida Bar might want to know about this initiative. Marijuana is still illegal in this state. It will still be illegal if the amendment passes. The law will simply provide for qualified people to use it lawfully. Any cop can arrest and jail you for possession of even the tiniest amounts of cannabis. While you may assert a defense of medical necessity in court, it will only happen after you have been arrested and prosecuted. It’s up to a jury to determine if your defense is valid, not some lawyer issuing you a phony card.

18

// 7.16.2014 // SFGN.com //

At one cannabis money seminar in Jacksonville, the company represents that you can sign up for a ‘cannabis treatment center consultation’ for $999, and acquire a ‘grower medical cannabis identification card so you can start growing now.’ Really? Well, guess what? Do so, and you can go to jail tomorrow. The Department of Health has not yet adopted any rules yet, so clinics seeking to pre-certify you for marijuana cards are premature. It will be up to the DOH to determine what meets the ‘debilitating conditions’ standards the amendment articulates. Anyone ‘pre-certified’ is probably going to run into a rule that says you must have been examined by a physician who himself has to be certified. NONE have been yet. There is another individual in Jacksonville billing himself as Florida’s only ‘certified cannabis real estate broker.’ I am sure the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be glad to hear about this. No real estate in Florida has yet been designated for where you may open up a cultivation facility. Before that happens, the state will have to decide where they want to allow marijuana farms to operate, and what the legal restrictions will be. Once they do, local cities and counties will then need to adopt reasonable zoning regulations for retail medical marijuana sales outlets. If you foolishly plunk money down for a legal dispensary today, don’t expect to get a refund tomorrow if the land turns out not to be zoned as such. Caveat Emptor. Amazingly though, there is a lawyer in Miami taking $25,000 deposits for ‘exclusive franchises’ to operate marijuana. Apparently, he knows where they are going to be even before the Department of Health or state legislature has made a single determination about the venues where businesses may grow or sell medical marijuana. Astounding.

soflagaynews //

If you want to make a donation so you can use marijuana medicinally, send a check to United for Care, the group funding this noble initiative. They need your help. They need your dollars. They need your vote. And you need to send them your absentee ballot. Let’s make that sixty percent a reality. The passage of a bill allowing for children with certain debilitating medical conditions to gain access to marijuana sent a shot across the bow. It suggests that if the amendment passes, Florida will adopt stringent and restrictive guidelines for medical marijuana distribution in our state. For example, the new ‘Charlotte’s Web’ law mandates you post a $5 million bond, have access to thousands of acres of land, and been in business continuously for thirty years to apply for a medical marijuana growing facility. Throughout the state, cannabis-marketing opportunities are understandably being publicized. It makes sense. The many states that have legally provided for dispensaries have seen a new and very profitable growth industry develop. But Florida is known for its scams as well as its sunshine. Don’t let your entrepreneurial dreams go up in smoke by investing your dollars in a business enterprise today that may not be legal tomorrow. It’s not just that the rules are different here. The rules are not here yet. You can plan, but you sure better not plant. If you do, you won’t be opening a new business. You will be hiring a criminal defense attorney. Norm Kent of Fort Lauderdale is the immediate past chair and president of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, (NORML), the nation’s longest running cannabis advocacy consumer group. He runs a consulting firm for persons interested in medical marijuana dispensaries. Another version of this article originally appeared as an op-ed in the SunSentinel, a media partner of SFGN.

Gay Naturists International (GN) began as part of The Naturist Society in 1981 and became an independent organization in 1993. Through its affiliated clubs, GNI “lends a bare hand to any fellow who’s comfortable being gay and naked.” GNI’s “mission is to serve as a resource to male naturists by hosting and sponsoring men’s naturist events and providing information and resources to individuals and local clubs. In addition, GNI is a voice for gay naturists in wider naturist efforts to educate society about naturism and to advance the interests of naturists worldwide.” Every year since 1985, GNI hosted up to 800 gay and bisexual male nudists at its Annual International Gathering of Male Naturists, held at a campground in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. This year the Gathering is taking a one-year hiatus, due to a scheduling conflict at the campground. Instead, GNI will host NakedFest 2014, a weeklong (August 2-9) event at Camp Ramblewood in Northern Maryland. Though it is a smaller venue than the campground in the Poconos, Ramblewood is big enough to accommodate 7 days of naked fun, camaraderie, education and relaxation in a beautiful rustic setting with a lake, Olympic size pool, tennis and volleyball courts, and secluded wooded trails. NakedFest is open to all men 21 or over, regardless of sexual orientation. Registration fee covers housing in dormitorystyle cabins, all meals and beverages, events, activities and entertainment (including Mr. GNI and Mr. GNI Leather contests). GNI also offers optional bus transportation to and from the Philadelphia and Baltimore International

more about our friends and enables you to feel a little more comfortable using their services with the limited dollars you have. SFGN welcomes to its pages a number of new advertisers in a variety of fields, a clear indication our newspaper represents a diverse but professional class of businessmen and entrepreneurs.

THE BASICS OF BIPHOBIA IN THE MEDIA WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU SEE IT Faith Cheltenham

Biphobia, or prejudice and/or fear of bisexuals, in the media can often be subtle in its complexity and stunning in breadth. Whether it’s explicit and easily recognized or indirect and implicit, biphobia can appear anywhere and everywhere — from

BIPHOBIA BY ASSOCIATION

Bi folks are often linked with harmful and inaccurate associations, especially infidelity, which is a frequent and nearconstant association. Actress and singer

BISEXUAL ERASURE

Bisexual erasure or bisexual invisibility is the tendency to ignore, remove, falsify, or re-explain evidence of bisexuality in history, academia, news media and other primary sources. Few news outlets have as rich a history of bi erasure as the Village Voice. In 1992, the Village Voice published “Bi Any Means Necessary; They Call Themselves

magazines to television, film, news, or the web. Here are recent examples of how media can be disaffirming, unwelcoming, and in some cases outright harmful to bisexual people:

Evan Rachel Wood announced she was separating from her husband Jamie Bell, and in less than 24 hours was forced to combat rumors of infidelity. No proof was offered for the reports of infidelity, except that Wood attended an event to support women in the LGBT community, as did another

openly bisexual actress, Michelle Rodriguez. Their courage and bravery in identifying themselves as “B” in LGBT should have been recognized and applauded; instead their bisexuality led to inaccurate depictions of their love lives, just because they walked the same red carpet.

Queer Bisexuals and, to the Distress of Many in the Gay Movement, They Want In.” Bisexual anarchist writer Michael William called the article “the theoretical basis of a new, more sophisticated anti-bi agenda,” and seventeen years later in 2009, longtime Village Voice writer Michael Musto asked “Ever Meet a Real Bisexual?” Musto wrote, “Do you know anyone who REALLY is equally attracted to both men

and women and effortlessly glides between those two dating pools without a second’s thought or self-consciousness? If so, do you ever suspect they’re full of shit?” The anti-bi agenda is still in full swing at Village Voice, as just last month the Village Voice published an article on NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray’s history of sexual fluidity without mentioning the word bisexual or bisexuality even once.

“Atlantic City Baby. Straights celebrating their pride by unLEASHING our gayness. @ thedirtypearls @tommylondon Be proud. We were born this way. #TellemAsia” Instantly news outlets began to state, “Lady Gaga confirms she is no longer bisexual” when she did nothing of the sort. “Individuals whose sexual practices seem out of line with their self-proclaimed sexual

orientation are often assumed to be ‘truly’ gay or lesbian, but are seldom assumed to be ‘truly bisexual,’” wrote bisexual theorist Christopher James in the 1996 “Queer Studies Anthology.” So when Lady Gaga refers to straights and gays, and calls them hers, that should be seen as a bisexuality sensibility but isn’t.

would see bisexual history, culture, theories, art, politics and community erased. Other figures who have been appropriated in the media without representation of their bisexuality (or bisexual identity) include author Herman Melville (Moby Dick), Velvet Underground singer Lou Reed, writer Henry David Thoreau, Portlandia star Carrie Brownstein, poet Emily Dickinson, author Virginia Woolf and singer/songwriter Frank Ocean. If you see an example of biphobia in the media, reporting it can lead to long-lasting

change in how that media outlet reports on bisexual people. Recently GLAAD met with BiNet USA and other bisexual advocates in Los Angeles and New York to discuss examples of biphobia in the media, just like the ones I’ve listed in this article. Help stop biphobia in the media by reporting to GLAAD every instance of biphobia you see or hear on TV, radio, news, magazines, online or at live events (concert, game, performances, etc.). GLAAD Reporting Tool: http://www.glaad. org/reportdefamation.

BISEXUAL

MISORIENTATION

Misorientation occurs when bisexual people are identified incorrectly as gay, lesbian or straight using current or previous relationship status instead of personal identification. As LGBT Pride Month wound down this year, Lady Gaga hit the news when she posted a photo to Instagram with this caption:

BIPHOBIA BY ASSOCIATION

James also coined the phrase “appropriation without representation” to refer to the phenomenon that excludes “bisexuality as a relevant category of sexual identity, yet claims behaviorally bisexual people or text with bisexual characters or content as ‘queer,’ ‘gay,’ or ‘lesbian.’” Whether she likes it or not, Ms. McCray is an example of that appropriation in the media, and what it looks like when a person’s own internalized biphobia lends itself to further appropriation by those who

lifestyle speak out

column

ARE YOU SUPPORTING AMENDMENT 2 (MEDICAL MARIJUANA)? SFGN Staff This week SFGN launches “Speak OUT” a weekly feature giving a regular voice to South Florida LGBT leaders. Below are some of their answers:

Supporting Amendment 2 allows people suffering from serious illnesses such as cancer, epilepsy and others access to medical marijuana, which has proven effective in relieving the symptoms of these illnesses. Medical marijuana is less harmful and less addictive than opiate derived medications being prescribed to combat these illnesses. If Floridians approve medical marijuana in November, the Florida legislature should adopt regulations to ensure that medical marijuana is not abused and that it is used for its intended purpose.” — Michael C. Gongora, former Vice Mayor of Miami Beach

Having been an outspoken advocate of legalizing marijuana for more than 40 years, I am very encouraged by the polls, which indicate that an overwhelming majority of Floridians support Amendment 2. Seniors throughout the state are among the leading supporters of legalizing medical marijuana the obvious reason: Weed is an organic alternative to the pharmaceuticals being prescribed for relief of the aches and pains which go along with the aging process.” — Rand Hoch, President and Founder, Palm Beach County Human Rights Council

Amendment 2 “Allows the medical use of marijuana for individuals with debilitating diseases as determined by a licensed Florida physician.” When implementing any new policy, often the “action plan” to cover every eventuality to ensure it benefits those it is intended to, and keep away from those who would abuse it, falls short. If distribution, access and production could be properly regulated, then this amendment could truly help those whom are suffering. — A.J. Alegria, President of Impulse Group — Fort Lauderdale Visit SFGN.com/SpeakOut to see more of this week’s responses. Send an Email to Jason.Parsley@sfgn.com if you know of a LGBT community leader that should be or wants to be a part of this list.

PEACE

PIPE

AS YOU ARE Steve Siler Ok queens (and lesbians—how you doin?), I’ve decided I have too many friends who are very interesting people, but who drive very boring cars. Yes, Altima, Camry, and Passat drivers, I’m talking to you. The Mazda 6 is what you should be driving here in 2014. Why? Here are four reasons…

1. It’s really really good-looking 2. It’s extremely fuel efficient (up to 40 mpg!) 3. It’s the most fun to drive car in the segment 4. It’s really really REALLY goodlooking. But there’s more to it than just its extremely handsome and aerodynamic body. The interior has a classy design that would look at home in an Audi and has tons of available tech, including a Euro-style center

control knob for infotainment. It’s quiet, has seriously comfortable seats, and a huge trunk. And as a Mazda, it can steer and stop with European-style panache—seriously, Mazda is good at making its cars fun to drive, which sound like a cliché but in this case, rings true. Every now and then, a car comes along that is so clearly a cut above the competition that it redefines what we expect of the class itself, so before you head off to the Honda or Hyundai store looking for a good sedan, check out the sexy Mazda 6 first.

“FOR TODAY I AM A BOY” BY KIM FU C.2014,

HOUGHTON MIFFLIN HARCOURT $23.00 / higher in Canada 242 pages

Terri Schlichenmeyer You’ve planned for it, dreamed of it, wished it would happen. You imagined yourself with it and envied those who had it: family, vacation, money, success, a sibling, a

pony. Whatever it was, it’s been your most fervent desire since forever. Yes, you’ve wanted it your whole life but, as in the novel “For Today I Am a Boy” by Kim Fu, you might not have fully realized it. Peter Haung should have inherited the keys to the kingdom. He’d been the answer to his parents’ prayers: a long-awaited boy, given a Cantonese middle name that meant “powerful king.” He would be the son who would not shame his father. It was a role that Peter didn’t want. Truth was, he didn’t know what he wanted. All his life, he admired his beautiful oldest sister, Adele. She was patient, generous, and agreeable, the sort of person others took advantage of. Peter wanted to be Adele – but he didn’t want the things she did to get by. He loved steadfast Helen but she seemed incapable of anything but study. Constantly

reminded that her destiny was law school, she knew that she was nonetheless a disappointment to her parents. Books couldn’t change her gender, but they could get her out of Fort Michel, Ontario. Sassy, cute Bonnie was the little sister to whom Peter was closest in age and camaraderie. It was Bonnie who participated in Peter’s schemes, Bonnie whose hair Peter styled. They shared a bed when they were young, and pretend-games as they grew – the latter of which was a secret, lest they anger their father. Father would be livid if he knew that Peter wore his sisters’ clothes and make-up. Their father never touched them – in anger or affection - yet the feelings that welled up in Peter would certainly have made him furious. Peter tried sports and dating girls. He tried to get used to “the thing” that extended from his groin, and he tried a religious “camp” to

fix his longings. He tried all his life to be a good son – and maybe that was the problem… Here’s a little warning for you: from the very first sentence of the prologue, it’ll be hard to resist “For Today I Am a Boy.” That’s because this is an absolutely gorgeously-told story that author Kim Fu hands us – but it’s so appealingly melancholy, too: for the first two-thirds of this book, Peter is unsure of his own desires, other than to become like his sisters. Fu gives him a sense of confusion that’s almost surreal at times – we sometimes can’t decide whether he’s thinking or doing, and it’s difficult to predict what will happen to him. That willhe-won’t-she guessing – the only thing more perfect for this novel is its ending. This is a relatively short book that you’ll want to make last. It’s moving and sad, but hard to put down – and if that’s what you need, then “For Today I Am a Boy” is what you want.

a&e theater IMPROV CLASSES AIM TO PREVENT LGBT SUICIDES J.W. Arnold A series of improvisation acting classes beginning this week could make the difference for an LGBT neighbor contemplating suicide. The free 10-week series, sponsored by the Weston-based Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention, Inc. (FISP) will run Thursday, July 17 through Thursday, Sept. 18 and conclude with a public performance on Sunday, Sept. 21. The program is free for adults over 18 and will be led by Robin Braun, executive director of Inside Out Theatre Company. In addition to an extensive career in theater, Braun holds an M.Ed. in mental health and counseling, giving her a unique background to lead the program. The improv classes were a natural evolution for the program, which began last year with a play workshop written and performed by a dozen program participants at Hagan Park Community Center in Wilton Manors, said Jackie Rosen, executive director of FISP.

32

// 7.16.2014 // SFGN.com //

“Last year, we gave two performances and felt it was such a good thing because it allowed the LGBT community to come together and discuss the issues and then write and produce a play,” she said. “It was therapeutic for not only the participants, but also the audience.” Rosen noted the city of Wilton Manors has a relatively high suicide rate compared to other communities in South Florida, especially across demographics including age, gender and sexual orientation. The improv program is co-sponsored by the Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention and LGBT Art of Community Not Alone Project, with donations and matching funds from the Community Foundation of Broward. In addition to the improv classes, FISP also sponsors educational programs and support groups, a telephone information line and other support services. To sign up for the classes, call 954-3840344 or go to FISPOnline.org.

SCIENCE GETS STEAMY

HAPPY HOUR PROGRAM EXPLORES LAWS OF ATTRACTION J.W. Arnold What happens when you notice an attractive man or woman across a crowded bar? Before most people are even aware, their bodies have responded — pupils dilate, heart rates increase, body temperatures rise. And by the time you finally offer to buy that “love connection” a drink, the deal may be done. South Florida Science Center and Aquarium’s latest “Science on Tap” event, “The Science of Attraction,” will explore this hypothesis on July 24 at 8 p.m. at O’Shea’s Irish Pub, 531 Clematis St. in West Palm Beach. Board certified sexologist Dr. Jason Carter will discuss some of the scientific secrets to snagging a mate over a cold beer or glass of wine. “Most people don’t realize that a chemical in the brain starts the entire process,” explained Carter, who earned a Ph.D from the American Academy of Clinical Sexologists and a master’s degree in marriage and family from Nova Southeastern University. “Most people think it is their hearts that is guiding their emotions.” For the price of a cup of coffee, craft beer or glass of wine, participants will have the opportunity each month to explore the latest scientific topics with a local expert. Modeled after “Science Cafés,” a trend sweeping pubs throughout the country, the Science Center’s Science on Tap is the first such event registered between Vero Beach

SouthFloridaGayNews

and Fort Lauderdale. The program has been a huge success, according to Kate Arrizza, Science Center COO: “We have been amazed by the interest in our first two events. We’ve drawn participants of all ages from all corners of the county,” she said. “One reason is the program makes it fun. A lot of people still have hang-ups about science from when they were students in school.” Even Carter, who has spent much of his professional career supporting law enforcement in Broward County, is looking forward to the unique venue. “I’ve never done anything like this,” he admitted. “It’s going to be fun.” The event is free and O’Sheas will offer happy hour specials beginning at 7 p.m. The next program in the series on Thursday, Aug. 11 will feature Dr. Lisa Radosta, a board certified veterinary behaviorist, who will deconstruct the assumptions, myths and mysteries surrounding our canine companions, including the science behind a variety of dog traits such as body language, emotions and general intelligence. For more information about Science on Tap, go to SFScienceCenter.org.

a&e film

Gary M. Kramer Kate Logan’s investigative documentary, “Kidnapped for Christ,” which aired July 10 on Showtime, was originally meant to be an evenhanded examination of Escuela Caribe, a Christian boarding school for troubled teens in the Dominican Republic. However, when she captures institutional abuses on camera, she was compelled to take action. As a filmmaker, she got involved in the personal struggle of David, a 17-year-old gay teen

whose parents sent him to Escuela Caribe to “fix” him. Logan carries messages from the gay teen in the hopes of rescuing David and exposing his (and others’) suffering and helplessness at the school. “Kidnapped for Christ” was executive produced by Fort Lauderdale native Mike C. Manning, who chatted on the phone from Los Angeles about this potent documentary.

How did you get involved in ÒK idnapped for ChristÓ? The beauty of this film is that it started out as a small passion project by Kate Logan, who wanted to do a short film on the good thing that the school was doing for her Christian college Biola University. It expanded, almost by chance. I came into the film from David, who was a friend of mine in college in Colorado. After I moved to L.A. to pursue acting, David came out to do a follow up interview with Kate. Because of shame, he hadn’t spoken to me before about this, and when he opened up and told me this story, and told me about the film being made, my response was: How can I help? I met Kate and did some small favors, and she eventually brought me on as an executive producer, helping with fundraising—running Kickstarter campaigns to shoot follow up interviews — and doing post-production. I just started a production company, Chhibber Mann Productions to make films that raise social issues, some scripted, some docs. Why was this topic so critical for you to make a film about? Truthfully, I identified with all the individuals who were sent there. In the U.S. today it’s still legal for a parent to sign a contract and send their child away to one of these camps — Christian or not, in the U.S. or not. And these camps are unregulated by the government. Physical and mental abuse takes place there. I put myself in the shoes of these teens who feel like they have no voice. What were you like as a teen? [Laughs]. I’m going to give you a different version of my teenage years than the one

my mom would give you. I played hockey, wrestled, and got good grades, but I got into trouble. I would party, and if my parents weren’t so accepting…they wouldn’t have sent me to one of these places, but it’s not inconceivable. What can you say about watching the experiences these teens suffer in this film? It does to me what I think it does to a lot of viewers. It pisses me off enough to want to do something about it. We use the film’s website as a call to action for teens to share stories, talk to other teens and warn parents, or contact congress and urge them to reassess the bill to regulate these camps. Do you think that the abusers were making sincere or possibly effective efforts to modify behavior? I genuinely think that there were some individuals in the camps who thought they were doing the right thing. Staff members who spend a year there went there with noble intentions. But the conditions of a lot of these camps are not conducive for anyone to live in—especially teens cut off from communication with their friends, family and outside world. There is a chant in the film, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world.Ó That to me sounds very much likeÑe xpress yourself as you want, not as society wants you to be. It seems almost ironic. Can you discuss this chant? I assume it’s part of the brainwashing technique—inside the walls of their camp:

soflagaynews //

this is the right way, and you are behaving the wrong way because society has influenced you in negative ways. It just seems fucked up. They are manipulating these kids to think the outside world is negative; and with sin, and only within the camp, can you become a decent human being. These kids had to ‘on the outside’ change their views and agree to all this stuff, and pretend to accept the sins and change—that’s part of the program. They have to let themselves as individuals conform to this camp. And if you pretend long enough, you [start to] believe it’s true. The suicide and depression rate after this psychological abuse have long-term impacts; they experience PTSD. What did you think about the teensÕ responses to the school after they were released? People deal with traumatic events in different ways. Some talk about them, some don’t. You see three unique individuals handle the situation in three different ways. What advice would you give to gay teens and/or other students who may find themselves in this situation? I think the most important thing is for them to share their stories. We’re not trying to villianize the parents, but they need to step up and say these camps are not what they seem. The more folks are educated about these camps, the less parents will send their kids to them. I would tell all teens: Be who you are and never apologize for it. If someone doesn’t accept you for who you are then move on.

a&e theater ARTSERVE CELEBRATES THE ARTS JULY 19 WITH LIVE MULTIMEDIA FESTIVAL J.W. Arnold

ArtServe, Broward County’s largest nonprofit arts service organization, regularly hosts traditional exhibitions inside its Fort Lauderdale gallery, but on July 19 from 6 to 10 p.m., the art and artists will spill into the neighboring parking lot and onto Sunrise Boulevard for the largest live multimedia art event of the year. RedEYE REboot is the interactive accompaniment to ArtServe’s ninth annual RedEYE exhibition on display until Aug. 15 and includes musical performances, spoken word, a graffiti challenge, body art, dance, culinary adventures and other multimedia disciplines. “RedEYE is not your average art exhibit,” said Jaye Abbate, president and CEO of ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. “It’s edgy and fun and the special event on July 19 brings together the community to experience a unique collaboration of art, film, music, live painting and unique installations.” “The RedEYE exhibit was originally created to help local kids who were getting into trouble defacing public property, channel their talents in a more positive way,” explained ArtServe Managing Director Byron Swart. With REboot, “we pay homage to that by erasing the walls so there is no distinction between the art taking place inside and outside.” RedEYE will feature some of the biggest names in urban and extreme art, including neo-figurative artist Ruben Ubiera, known for his strong use of graffiti inspired technique, urban murals and mixed-media work. Ubiera was selected by event sponsor Rick Case Fiat to tag their latest model with a RedEYE inspired design. Other featured artists include muralist and

tattoo artist “Marvel” Cuellar; digital artist Sri Prabha; installation artists and muralists Tabatha Mudra, Chnk, Beju Lejobart, Tati, Anthony Hernandez; and performance artists Body & Soul Dance Theatre. Filmmaker Michael Chasin has been tapped to serve as the festival director for Red Shorts, an indie film festival that will present short works throughout the entire exhibit. As part of this year’s ReBOOT, the event will pay tribute to the original “cans to canvas” concept by pairing several of the seasoned graffiti artists with student street artists for a live graffiti challenge. The team concept “not only provides mentoring for the students from artists who came from a similar background,” added Abbate, “it reinforces how channeling their skills to the canvas can lead to bigger and better things for them.” The event will raise funds to support ArtServe’s mission, including progressive events, affordable facilities and collaborative programs and services that help artists turn art into business. In addition South Florida Gay News sponsoring the event others include Rick Case Fiat, ArtsCalendar.com, Broward Cultural Division, Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival and Fast Printz. General admission tickets to RedEYE REboot are $8 in advance and $12 at the door. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $40 in advance and $60 at the door and include reserve parking and access to the VIP lounge. All tickets include a free drink at the RedEYE after party on July 20 from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are available online at ArtServe.org or ArtsCalendar.com or call 954-462-8190.

a&e theater ‘LEA DELARIA:

BUTCH CHANTEUSE’

‘ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK’ STAR TALKS TO SFGN David-Elijah Nahmod Jaws drop open when Lea DaLaria sings. The self-identified butch dyke has the voice of an angel. Her eclectic career includes stand-up comedy, cabaret headliner, recording artist, Broadway star, film, and television, where she currently appears as Boo on the acclaimed lesbian-centric prison drama “Orange is the New Black” on Netflix. DaLaria has no coming out story — she was never in the closet to begin with. She began her career by calling herself “that f***ing dyke” appearing on “The Arsenio Hall Show” in 1993 as an out gay performer. Ellen’s historic coming out was still four years away. In 1998 she starred to great acclaim as Hildy in the Broadway revival of the 1940s musical “On The Town.” Her co-star was Jesse Tyler Ferguson, the now openly gay star of “Modern Family.” Her albums, “Play It Cool,” “Double Standards” and “The Live Smoke Sessions” harken back to the times of great jazz vocalists such as Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughn. Her playlist includes

many numbers from the songbooks of such legends, but she’s also been known to perform bluesy renditions of songs like Blondie’s “Call Me.” Speaking to SFGN by phone, DaLaria bemoaned the fact that this style of music rarely sells to a mass audience, as it once did. “It’s a big shame,” she said. “My favorite song in high school was Edgar Winter’s “Frankenstein” — it’s a ten minute instrumental. It’s such a great piece of music. I’ve tried to get a jazz troupe to do it. We’ll never see music like that again.” DaLaria has often invited controversy, speaking her mind about a variety of topics. She recently raised eyebrows when she cancelled her scheduled appearance at the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, an annual lesbian leaning concert event. The fur flied when Festival promoters reportedly announced that transgender women would not be welcome at the event. “The biggest problem we have is that we’re a bunch of factions who don’t trust each other,” she observed. “I cannot be involved

with infighting, or with groups fighting each other. Both sides are wrong. I would mediate, but how can you mediate when no one is listening? This has been my stand for years. What the f**k is wrong with us? If we’d stopped fighting with each other we could have had our rights 25 years ago.” DeLaria has equally strong opinions about marriage equality, which she’s not in favor of personally, yet fights for it. “It’s assimilation,” she said. “But I’m not against it. If you tell me I can’t do something, then I’ll be in your face fighting for it. I don’t think it’s for me, but if you want to do it, then I’ll fight for you right to do it.” We need to remember those who came before us, DeLaria feels. “I don’t have a problem with the mainstreaming of the queer community as long as we don’t deny the reality of who we are,” she said. “A lot of people ignore our history and try to emulate straights.” DeLaria is proud of “Orange is the New Black.” The show is based on Piper Kerman’s well received memoir about the one year she

spent in a women’s prison. DeLaria plays Boo, who, like herself, is a tough dyke with a heart of gold. “Boo is me,” DeLaria said. “They knew they were writing it for me and it’s one hundred percent me. What I like most about Boo is that she’s a three dimensional butch character. She has feelings and emotions, and she’s the smartest character.” Like most of the characters in “Orange is the New Black” Boo is based on a real person. “I know enough about her to build my character,” DeLaria said. “But I don’t know who Boo actually is. “I believe she’s out of prison.” For the immediate future, DeLaria will be filming “Orange” which has just been renewed for a third season, and working on her music. She’ll be making cabaret appearances in support of her new album “DeLaria + Bowie = Jazz.” It will no doubt be a class act.

LAVISH ‘LES MISERABLES’

PPTOPA TRIUMPHS WITH EPIC MUSICAL Mary Damiano The Pembroke Pines Theatre of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) is a community theater that has never shied away from challenging material, evident in their impressive production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd” some years ago. But with their current show, they’ve reached beyond the complex rhythms of Sondheim to tread new ground with the operatic spectacle of “Les Miserables,” a production that is a glorious triumph. Just in case you haven’t encountered one of its many incarnations, “Les Miserables” is the epic tale of Jean Valjean (James Cichewicz) a man condemned to hard labor for stealing bread. As the story begins in 19th century France, Valjean is paroled by strict, by-the-book law enforcer Javert (Michael Santanelli) and finds it difficult to make a life for himself until kindness prompts a spiritual epiphany. Eight years later, after breaking parole and changing his name, he’s a prosperous mayor and factory owner, and later adoptive father to an orphan. Valjean’s honorable new life makes no difference to Javert, who doggedly pursues Valjean for his crime. Director Keith Kramer keeps the action

moving briskly, maintaining a sense of urgency throughout the sweeping story. PPTOPA does a fine job at presenting the spectacle of “Les Miserables,” through Joe Ferrel’s expansive scenic design, an 11-piece orchestra, and a cast of more than 40 performers. Standouts include Zack Michael as the street-smart Gavroche (somebody cast this kid in a production of “Oliver!”) Chris D’Angelo as idealistic Marius; Stacey Marino as doomed Fantine; and Ben Sandomir (who portrays Jean Valjean in some performances) as insurrection leader Enjolras. Special applause for the on-stage scheming Thenardier family — Troy Stanley is hilarious as the ribaldly immoral innkeeper and thief; Jordana Forrest is his garish partner in crime; while Cassandra Zapeda shows extraordinary warmth and poignancy as the teenaged Eponine. Zapeda’s sweet yet gutsy performance of “On My Own” will make you feel the pain of her unrequited love. The centerpiece of “Les Miserables” is Cichewicz as Valjean, who makes the role his own. Cichewicz brings the perfect balance

of intensity, charisma and vulnerability to Valjean. And can he ever hold a note — barely 15 minutes in Act One, he was already receiving showstopping applause for his rich vocal prowess during Valjean’s transformation from hardened ex-con to servant of God. Cichewicz has a worthy on-stage adversary in Santanelli as Javert, the indefatigable policeman faced with his own moral dilemma. Santanelli’s rendition of “Stars” is beautiful, and it’s fascinating to watch Cichewicz and Santanelli vocally spar.

soflagaynews //

The production is not without glitches, including mics dropping out and a few weak voices in tiny roles — that’s what puts the community in community theater. But those glitches are tiny wrinkles in the rich tapestry of PPTOPA’s “‘” . Don’t miss it. “Les Miserables” runs through August 3 at the Susan B. Katz Theater of the Performing Arts in the River of Grass ArtsPark in Pembroke Pines. For tickets and more information, visit PPTOPA. com.
