state’s constitution doesn’t recognize gay marriage. Before considering the case, the appeals court in a 10-3 decision asked the Supreme Court to settle the question about the gay marriage ban. The Supreme Court, however, agreed with three dissenting judges who said the issue wasn’t of such high importance that it had to go straight to the state’s top court.

SFGN Adds New Cartoonist SFGN Staff Publisher Norm Kent announced that he has contracted with a Creators Syndicate to add a third editorial cartoonist to the pages of SFGN — Andy Marlette, of the Pensacola News Journal. Born and raised in Sanford, Florida, Marlette graduated from the University of Florida and became staff editorial cartoonist at the Pensacola News Journal in 2007. Marlette received a priceless editorial cartoon education while living with his uncle and Pulitzer Prizewinning cartoonist Doug Marlette in Hillsborough, N.C. Doug’s tragic death in July of 2007 made evermore poignant the elder Marlette’s fierce and faithful devotion to the art form of editorial cartooning as a cornerstone of American free speech. Andy’s editorial cartoons have become both hated and adored by daily readers. His work has been awarded by
the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors for best editorial cartoons on state issues and former Governor Charlie Crist referred to himself regularly as Marlette’s biggest fan, despite the fact that he was also regularly a target in cartoons. Marlette’s work will appear in SFGN intermittently, along with current cartoonists Mike Thompson and Gary Markstein.

Egypt Prosecutor Orders 7 Held For Homosexuality
(AP) CAIRO – Egypt’s top prosecutor ordered Saturday seven men detained and physically examined over accusations of ``debauchery,’’ a charge often leveled at gays, after a video emerged of a same-sex wedding party, the state news agency reported. A statement from the prosecutor’s office said the suspects are also accused of broadcasting footage that ``violates public decency,’’ ordering them detained for four days and urging investigators to refer them to trial swiftly ``to protect social

Marriage Licenses Go To
(AP) SANTA FE, N.M. – More than half of the marriage licenses issued by Santa Fe County in the past year have gone to same-sex couples. The number of licenses issued has doubled, and 55 percent went to same-sex couples, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported (http://bit.ly/ZcNfWU) Friday, citing data compiled by the county clerk’s office. More than 2,500 licenses were handed out since becoming available to same-sex couples on Aug. 23, 2013, the figures show. Of those, nearly 1,400 were requested by gay couples, with at least 600 of those couples coming from Texas and Oklahoma, officials said. The rise in licenses has also led to an increase in revenue for Santa Fe area caterers, photographers and other weddingrelated businesses. New Mexico became the 17th state to legalize same-sex marriage on Dec. 19, through a unanimous ruling by the state Supreme Court. Some opponents discussed trying to overturn the ruling with a ballot measure, but that effort gained no traction.

(AP) ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast — A Gambian lawmaker says the National Assembly has passed a bill imposing life imprisonment for some homosexual acts. Minority leader Samba Jallow said Monday the bill brings life sentences for “aggravated homosexuality.” A draft bill seen by The Associated Press contains language identical to a controversial anti-gay bill signed into law in Uganda earlier this year. It defines “aggravated homosexuality” to apply to “serial offenders” and people living with HIV/AIDS. National Assembly Speaker Abdoulie Bojang confirmed the bill amending the criminal code was passed last month but would not say whether there had been changes to the draft.

(AP) NEW YORK — Tennis great Martina Navratilova proposed to her girlfriend on the big screen of Arthur Ashe Stadium between the U.S. Open men’s semifinals. Navratilova popped the question to Julia Lemigova in the Tennis Channel suite Saturday, drawing a loud cheer from the crowd. “I was very nervous,” Navratilova said later. “It came off. She said yes. It was kind of an out-of-body experience. You’ve seen people propose at sporting events before, in movies, in real life. Here it was happening to me. It was like I was watching myself do it.” The 57-year-old Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, a mark she shares with Chris Evert. Serena Williams will try to match it in Sunday’s women’s final. Navratilova said somebody suggested she propose during a changeover in the first match between Kei Nishikori and Novak Djokovic, but she didn’t want to disturb the players in any way. The only problem was that Navratilova was later scheduled to play a “Champions” doubles match with Jana Novotna against Tracy Austin and Gigi Fernandez. She tried unsuccessfully to get the start postponed without telling anybody why, so she was fretting that the Nishikori-Djokovic match would go five sets. Fortunately, it ended in four.

Police told the station that Leos had an argument with the suspect at their home before Pegues allegedly shot her in the back. It is unclear of the relationship between Pegues and Leos. Authorities and initial reports identified Leos as a man, but family members of the victim clarified that Leos identified as a woman.

OK to Punch Lesbian at Pridefest
(AP) PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh city officials have determined that a police officer did not use excessive force when he punched a woman at a gay pride event in June. City Solicitor Lourdes Sanchez-Ridge made the announcement Friday afternoon. The officer, Souroth Chatterji, said he was trying to break up a fight when he grabbed the woman by the head and punched her in the side so he could handcuff her. The officer says the woman, Ariel Lawther of Harmony, fought with him and kicked him in the groin. She was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest. A press release says the officer is back on duty. The Delta Foundation, a local group that advocates for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals, had asked police to investigate the officer’s actions after a friend of Lawther’s posted video of the encounter.

Court To Act
(AP) SALT LAKE CITY – The Mormon church and four religious organizations are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene and settle once and for all the question of whether states can outlaw gay marriage. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in a statement Friday, said it joined a friend-of-the-court brief asking the high court to hear Utah’s marriage case. Also taking part in the filing were The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the National Association of Evangelicals, the Ethics & Religious Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Each teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman. ``The time has come to end the divisive national debate as to whether the Constitution mandates same-sex marriage,’’ the brief states. Multiple organizations and governmental entities on both sides of the debate have filed similar briefs asking the court to take up the issue. The religious groups urged the Supreme Court on the basis of tradition and religious freedom to uphold a state’s right to not allow gay and lesbian couples to wed.

Decision on Same-Sex Marriage Edges Closer By Dan Sweeney Sun Sentinel
The long, slow slog to same-sex marriage goes on. Most of the myriad same-sex marriage lawsuits that have made headlines over the past month have had significant updates in the last few days. But the Florida Supreme Court will ultimately have to decide the issue. And even then, gay and lesbian couples may have to wait until the U.S. Supreme Court steps in. Although it struck down a federal same-sex marriage ban last year, that case did not address whether states can ban same-sex marriage. So far, of all the same-sex marriage rulings in Florida, only one – a federal case in Tallahassee – has had authority over the entire state. Although that court overturned the ban, it also put its ruling on hold until the U.S. Supreme Court has its say. “The federal court basically said it would hold its ruling until the U.S. Supreme Court decides to hear cases from the Fourth (Utah) and 11th (Virginia) circuits,” explained Shannon Minter, legal director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, which serves as cocounsel in lawsuits in Palm Beach and MiamiDade counties. •In Hillsborough County’s Shaw v. Shaw case, a lesbian wanted to get a divorce from her spouse, but the circuit court declared the state did not recognize the marriage in the first place, hence, no divorce. The Second District Court of Appeal recognized the statewide importance of the case, and rather than hear it, simply kicked it upstairs to the Florida Supreme Court on Aug. 27. Separate lawsuits in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties are separate no longer. In both of those instances, gay and lesbian couples walked into their county clerk of courts offices, asked for a marriage license, and then sued when they were denied. Circuit court judges in both counties then overturned Florida’s same-sex marriage ban. The state appealed both cases and Attorney General Pam Bondi asked the Third District Court of Appeal in Miami to wait for the U.S. Supreme Court to rule. It rejected that argument on Aug. 28. On the other side, attorneys for the couples asked the court to move the cases directly to the state Supreme Court, as occurred in Hillsborough County. The court has not yet ruled on that. “I am confident that the court of appeal will let us know very soon whether they’re going to certify that result to the state Supreme Court,” Minter said. In Broward County, a same-sex divorce, similar to the one that just moved to the Florida

Supreme Court in Hillsborough County, saw the marriage ban overturned. Now, Broward Circuit Judge Dale Cohen, who issued a stay of his own ruling, intends to grant the divorce on Sept. 10. “The stay will be up on Sept. 3 unless the state files a notice of appeal by 5 p.m. that day,” said Nancy Brodzki, the attorney for Heather Brassner, who wants a divorce after getting a civil union in Vermont. “But we’ve been told by the attorney general’s office that they do not intend to appeal this ruling.” Again, the larger question of same-sex marriage will have to wait for an appeal, even though the judge will grant a divorce in this one instance. “It could potentially allow couples to divorce,” Brodzki said, “but it will not force the clerk of the court to issue marriage licenses.” Finally, in Palm Beach County, Gildas Dousset is suing Florida Atlantic University. In that case, Dousset, who is French, married Fort Lauderdale native Paul Rubio in Massachusetts. After doing so, he wanted to get in-state tuition as the spouse of a resident. But the university rejected his plea. The two men appealed to university administration, which rejected the appeal. The case went to the Fourth District Court of Appeal in West Palm Beach. The state had until Aug. 20 to file its argument, and, for the first time in a same-sex-marriage case in Florida, it did not do so. “The university did file with the court a copy of the same brief the attorney general filed in the federal case, so those arguments are in front of the court,” said Minter, who serves as co-counsel in the Dousset case. “If everything goes on track with the Dousset case, it could be a matter of a few months.” The Hillsborough case is already moving on to the Florida Supreme Court, and it seems likely that the Miami-Dade/Monroe lawsuit will do the same. As with the Miami-Dade/ Monroe cases, the Broward and Hillsborough cases are so similar that they, too, could be consolidated. Regardless, the constitutionality of Florida’s same-sex marriage ban will likely be up to the state’s high court to decide. And then, of course, comes the U.S. Supreme Court. Although federal courts of appeal have sent cases up to the U.S. Supreme Court, no state Supreme Court has done so. Assuming the Florida Supreme Court takes up these cases in its next session, which begins Jan. 1, 2015, Florida may well be the first state to send the question of same-sex-marriage bans to the U.S. Supreme Court from the state court system. soflagaynews //

news national Federal Judge Rules AGAINST Gay Marriage
Here are a few snippets from his opinion… SFGN Staff “Louisiana’s laws and Constitution are directly related to achieving marriage’s historically preeminent purpose of linking children to their biological parents. Louisiana’s regime pays respect to the democratic process; to vigorous debate. To predictable controversy, of course. The fact that marriage has many differing, even perhaps unproved dimensions, does not render Louisiana’s decision irrational. Nor does the opinion of a set of social scientists (ardently disputed by many others, it should be noted) that other associative forms may be equally stable, or the view that such judgments vilify a group (even though one finds them in a majority of the states, but not in all states). Even the fact that the state’s precepts work to one group’s disadvantage does not mandate that they serve no rational basis. The Court is persuaded that a meaning of what is marriage that has endured in history for thousands of years, and prevails in a majority of states today, is not universally irrational on the constitutional grid.” “This Court is persuaded that Louisiana has a legitimate interest...whether obsolete in the opinion of some, or not, in the opinion of others...in linking children to an intact family formed by their two biological parents, as specifically underscored by Justice Kennedy in Windsor.”
“When a federal court is obliged to confront a constitutional struggle over what is marriage, a singularly pivotal issue, the consequence of outcomes, intended or otherwise, seems an equally compelling part of the equation. It seems unjust to ignore. And so, inconvenient questions persist. For example, must the states permit or recognize a marriage between an aunt and niece? Aunt and nephew? Brother/brother? Father and child? May minors marry? Must marriage be limited to only two people? What about a transgender spouse? Is such a union same-gender or malefemale? All such unions would undeniably be equally committed to love and caring for one another, just like the plaintiffs.”

New Wilton Manors Newsletter Publishes Anti-Gay Letter SFGN Staff
The September edition of The Islander, a new monthly publication covering Wilton Manors, published
an anti-gay letter from a “concerned” resident. Below is the full text of the letter.
Grand Opening of “Hetero Burger” on The Drive coming soon. As a 45-year resident of Wilton Manors, (and just an FYI, a long-time registered Democrat), I find our elected officials feel that they can let certain businesses run rampant over our city with no concern of huge signs hinting at vulgarity along Wilton Drive. There still ARE heterosexual residents living here, and we DON’T find establishments named “Gaysha”, “Gay Mart” and “Rock Hard” inclusive... at all. Do we not care what goes on a 20 foot neon sign that our children see every day when passing by on the school bus? Do we want Wilton Drive to become Times Square, circa 1982? Would I be able to get an occupational license if I tried to open a “Hetero Burger”? What about “Strait Mart”? Would we be able to pass the city sign test? Doubtful. Our elected officials MAY think that they have the upper hand and can change a city by allowing these subjectively named businesses to exist, but there are overwhelmingly large factions that are more than ready to present an opposing point of view. It’s one thing to want equality it’s another to try to steamroller your hunger for dominance over a city at the cost of those families who still want to live a non-sexualized, suburban family lifestyle.

Lesbian Murdered in Deerfield By Roommate Mike Clary Sun Sentinel
About two months ago, when Jacqueline Marie Luongo could no longer pay rent on her apartment, friends said she moved in with longtime friend Patricia Viveiros, who had recently lost her driver’s license. “They were going to help each other,” said Jan Spear, who has known both women for years. “Jacki could drive in exchange for a place to stay.” Now Luongo is accused of killing her roommate, stuffing her in a garment bag and storing her body in a closet for at least a few days. Broward Sheriff’s deputies said they were called to a first-floor unit at Crystal Pines Rental Apartments, 4255 Crystal Lake Drive, on Thursday after a man said he couldn’t get in touch with his friend despite multiple calls. When no one answered a knock at the door, deputies said they came back Friday morning with a key and entered to find a woman’s body stuffed into a garment bag sitting inside a bedroom closet. The woman’s head was covered with a

The name of the 68-year-old victim has not been released by Broward Sheriff’s officials. But Spear and neighbors identified her as Viveiros. Detectives began hunting for Luongo on Friday, officials said. About 1 a.m. Saturday, Fort Lauderdale police received a tip that she was in an apartment in the 3000 block of Commercial Boulevard. Contacted by phone and loudspeaker, Luongo for hours refused authorities’ requests to come out. Finally, at about 5 a.m., she left the apartment and was taken into custody. advertorial Publisher Establishes TAX & INSUR ANCE Cannabis Consulting Firm AMERICAN “e safe return of your money is our top priority.” Transfer Your Money to a Guaranteed Return Fixed Annuity
Norm Kent, the past President of the Board of Directors of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), has opened up a new medical marijuana consulting firm in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Florida Cannabis Consultants will be doing business as FCC420.com. “Frankly,” said Kent, “with a constitutional amendment on the ballot to approve marijuana wellness centers here in the Sunshine State, entrepreneurs, growers, and venture capitalists are going to need guidance and direction. I am being swamped with calls and I needed to set up a vehicle to respond professionally.” Few people in the industry can bring to the table the breadth and depth of experience that Kent can, having first worked with NORML four decades ago when he was a student and “toker,” he acknowledges, at Hofstra University. Kent sarcastically notes that “yes, marijuana was a gateway drug. It led to a higher education, law school and a lifetime of fighting for social reforms.” “Today,” Kent notes, “my youthful indiscretion has become a a professional crusade.” In Florida, it’s on the verge of coming to fruition. Early polling suggests nearly 72% of Florida citizens support medical marijuana. For the amendment to prevail, 60% of the voters must approve the initiative. Kent states that his consulting firm, formed with his law partner,Russell Cormican, “will guide clients through the emerging rules and regulations for Florida wellness centers.” Kent, who has become somewhat of a regular on national TV defending cannabis consumers on the Nancy Grace show, indicates that his new consulting firm “will provide up to date and cutting edge advisories warning ‘cannabiznesses’ of the pitfalls and problems which may occur as they seek to invest their monies and open
the their doors.” He warns that you can’t start to “grow now and assert a medical defense tomorrow. The amendment has to pass first.” He adds “you can prepare but you can’t plant.” In 1982, as a young attorney, Kent once sued the state of Florida to prevent it from spraying the deadly herbicide paraquat on marijuana fields growing in the state. Today his goal is to help the state craft reasonable rules and regulations for the dispensaries and wellness centers which will open when and if the amendment passes. “No one is better equipped to do so,” says his business partner, Russell Cormican. “As the chair of NORML, Norm has criss-crossed the country as a medicinal marijuana advocate, lecturing in colleges, legal conferences, and advising legislators. He is a legitimate expert.” Kent served as vice chair and then chair of NORML from 2012-2014, and has served on their Board of Directors since 1996. It was Kent who pioneered medical necessity defenses for cannabis consumers in Florida as far back as 1988. One of his clients, Elvy Mussika, is one of only four living Americans who have cannabis grown and delivered to them monthly by the federal government. A Criminal defense attorney in South Florida for 35 years, since 1979, Kent also successfully represented patients and caregivers of the Key West Cannabis Buyers Clubs in the early 1990’s. “The public is tired of prohibition. It seeks access to medicinal marijuana. I hope to help craft the rules so it happens fairly,” Kent stated, adding “I also want to insure that consumers and investors do not become victims of flim-flam artists and fly-by-night con artists. At FCC420.com, we will be like a third base coach, letting players know where the scoring opportunities are.” soflagaynews //

Sound Bite Q Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
Welcome to Sound Bite Q, the column that thanks advertisers who support SFGN. We invite you to support them, because without their outreach to us, we would not be here to reach out to you. More importantly, loc¬¬¬al papers only survive in our busy world because we are
all connected to each other. For me, this column does more than encourage you to patronize one of SFGN’s advertisers. It lets you know a little more about our friends and enables you to feel a little more comfortable using their services with the limited dollars you have.
Dr. Warner Smiles Upon the Drive
SFGN is fortunate to have a wealth of dentists advertising on our pages. Few are as dedicated and talented as Dr. David Warner from Island City Smiles, who has been practicing dentistry for over 17 years. Born and raised in Indiana, Dr. Warner graduated from the Indiana University School of Dentistry, moving to Florida in 1997 with his partner, Chris. A member of the American Academy of General Dentistry, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and the American Dental Association, Dr. Warner is also a Fellow in the American Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD). With an unyielding commitment to continuing education and patient care, Island City Smiles is tucked into the end of Wilton Drive, adjacent to our own Dairy Queen, home of the fabulous Dilly Bar. But Dr. Warner’s home is a newly transformed state of the art dental office expanding its size and breadth to a growing community. The mid century modern architecture on the outside of their walls fails to adequately reveal the astounding all-digital, high tech dental office on the inside. They are one of the few local offices with dedicated suites for surgical extractions and new implants.
Their sophisticated digital X-ray technology minimizes patient risk and they are moving towards a paperless office, which secures your confidentiality and is of course HIPPA compliant. In delivering complete and comfortable dentistry to their patients, Dr. Warner pays close attention to the links between your overall health and dental health. He understands that a good smile on the outside makes you feel better inside, so using the modern ClearCorrect aligner technology, you develop a new confidence about yourself and your person along with your smile. In addition to many other cosmetic procedures such as Zoom whitening and veneers, Dr. Warner provides all the general and restorative procedures that ensure the best oral health possible. Presently, his team is offering a new patient special for $79. This includes a comprehensive exam, x-rays, and a cleaning for those that do not have active gum disease. In celebration of their newly renovated office, they have extended their ‘Zoom Summer Whitening Special’ for $199! Hey it’s past Labor Day. Jump in before it’s too late, and make yourself look and feel better!

Can We Talk?
Read SFGN’s interview with Joan Rivers on page 10 of the Fall Arts & Entertainment Guide.
Goodbye Joan Rivers, we’ll miss you Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
Four years ago, I remember assigning one of our writers to do an exclusive SFGN interview with comedienne Joan Rivers. There were a lot of reasons Joan was special to me. First of all, in the face of so much adversity, she blazed a trail for female comics. Her willingness to be irreverent and irascible was inspirational. You see, in life, pacesetters, whether it’s a Robin Williams or a Neil Rogers, have to cut a swath beyond the commonplace. You have to put your neck out there. Boy, did Joan Rivers ever do that. Her husband committed suicide. “I could kill him for that,” she said. Joan Rivers was a female Liberace. She exuded opulence and arrogance with an unrelenting flair and fancy. But her spontaneity took hours of preparation night after night. Her strength was an indefatigable spirit and resilience. She could joke about 9-11 and Osama Bin Laden: “how can you not catch a 6 foot 6 inch man on dialysis walking through the desert on a camel? Just follow the electric cord. There’s only one god damn socket in Afghanistan.” If you ever got to see her New York apartment, decorated like a French castle, you would have seen a card filing cabinet with 3 by 5 cards, cataloging thousands of one line jokes she told over decades. “Exercise? If God
18
// 9.10.2014 // SFGN.com //
wanted me to bend over, he would have put diamonds on the floor.” Like most good comics, Joan Rivers trespassed on good taste and common decency. Political correctness was not a barometer, it was a line to be crossed. Yes, she was self deprecating but she was astoundingly caustic, whether attacking Donald Trump or a guest in her audience. Cutting down a target, the jokes were not so much meant to demean the person as to give them notoriety or stature. ‘Hey did you hear what Joan said about you on the air’ should have made you feel relevant, not relegated. If you made her act, it’s because you mattered. If she could make fun of her plastic surgeries, she could scoff at your chin tuck. You have got to laugh at yourself and the human condition. How else do you explain diarrhea? ‘Can we talk’ was the Joan Rivers prelude to speaking the truth. She was saying, ‘get ready, I am not holding back.’ It’s a trait you should have as a gay person. Be who you are. Don’t apologize for marrying who you want, even that ugly hairy frog holding your hand right now. Hey, he’s your frog. The gay community loved Joan Rivers and she loved us back. She joked about all our common themes, from aging to sex, from glamor to glitz. If she had just passed away of a cardiac arrest at the age of 81, we simply would soflagaynews //
have said she lived a great life. We are shocked at her passing because there is something ironic about a woman who seemingly went for extensive and painful plastic surgeries every six months dying during a routine thirty minute endoscopy. It was like hearing astronaut John Glenn slipped and cracked his head in a shower. A simple comedienne with the ability to make us laugh incessantly, she made our news section last month by joking that President Obama was gay and his wife Michele transgender. Friends with Prince Charles, she performed for our own queens in South Beach and real ones in London on the world stage. Appropriately, it was the Gay Men’s Chorus of New York who were the lead singers during her funeral service. A prolific author, Joan recently made national news and shocked a CNN host by walking off the set during a live interview promoting her book. She thought the questions were stupid. ‘Damn,’ I said to
SouthFloridaGayNews
myself, ‘why didn’t I have the common sense to do that last month with Nancy Grace?’ That’s why she was Joan Rivers. More than just comedic, she was a cutting edge firebrand, telling bigots who did not like gay people- 30 years ago- ‘oh, grow up!’ Life is an arc, a circle, and a celebration. Joan Rivers used her status as a celebrity to make all of us laugh a little and love more. She told the world there is no difference between gays and straights, except that we dress better. I don’t, but her life and her legacy is one we should all cherish.

column letter to the editor Newseum Responds to Pier Angelo’s Column ‘Almost All The News That Fit’ SFGN Staff During Mr. Pier Angelo’s recent visit to the Newseum in Washington, D.C. we left him with the mistaken impression that there is nothing about gay rights, people or news in our exhibits. While no single exhibit focuses on gays in the media, we should have suggested he visit several areas of the museum that focus on this subject. For example, in the News History Gallery on level five, Randy Shilts, one of the first openly gay journalists at a major newspaper is profiled in a display titled “Civil Rights: Using the Media for Social Change.” His reports led to a bestseller about bungled government attempts to deal with the AIDS epidemic - “And the Band Played On.” Nearby in the same gallery we have a 1981 issue of the gay-oriented New York Native, one of the first publications to address AIDS. In our newspeople database, accessible via digital kiosks, we profile Leroy Aarons who founded the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association in 1990. In 1989, as executive editor of the Oakland Tribune, he surprised
the American Society of Newspaper Editors by declaring his homosexuality while presenting a confidential survey of gay journalists. The database also includes Lisa Ben, who in 1947 founded a magazine for lesbians called Vice Versa, and who has been called the “founding mother” of the contemporary gay and lesbian press. And in our First Amendment Gallery on level four, one of the current First Amendment issues is the question of whether students have the right to discuss their homosexuality at school or to publicly speak out against being gay. We appreciate the opportunity to respond and apologize for leaving Mr. Angelo with an incomplete look at the museum. Beginning this fall we will add information to our visitor guide that directs guests to these and other areas of the museum that focus on gay issues. Sincerely, Jonathan Thompson Senior Manager/Media Relations - NEWSEUM

community announcement
PSF Announces Plans for 2015 Pride South Florida
Pride South Florida today called for volunteers as it lays out its plans for the 2015 Pride Festival scheduled for February 28 and March 1. At its recent election, former treasurer, Bonnie Majcher, took over as the new cochair and president. SFGN Publisher Norm Kent has agreed to serve as the group’s new counsel and vice president. Kent promised “complete transparency” as the organization moves forward in resolving complex issues, the most pressing its pending legal status with the IRS, which is reviewing the group’s 501 (C) 3 designation., which it had sought to revoke. Elected to a full term as secretary was Barrie Wood. Former Chair Rocco Bowell will now serve as treasurer. Luciano Retondaro and Richard Thurston were also added as new board members. Three board positions remain open, and volunteers from the community are being recruited. The PSF board meets on Monday evenings twice a month at 7 p.m. You can retrieve forms from the group’s website, www.psf.org Amongst the issues on the PSF Agenda for its September 22 meeting will be selecting the venue for its Spring 2015 festival, which may include a return to Holiday Park or an entirely new street fair in Wilton Manors. “Nothing is etched in stone. We are only limited by

the boundaries of our imagination,” Kent stated. Stated Majcher, “We want to do what is the most creative and beneficial to the community. We can’t afford to lose money on another pride festival. Our goal is to generate enough funds to give back to the community, not take away from it.” The organization will be announcing next week a volunteer’s party, celebrating the contributions made at the past two festivals, while organizing for next year’s event. PSF’s online website is soliciting members to serve on various committees for next year, including Event Planning, Entertainment, Communications, Logistics, Marketing and Sponsorship. While the group’s offices are presently located on NE 13th Street at Dixie Highway, Board Chair Bonnie Majcher said PSF was actively seeking alternative, but centrally based office locations at more advantageous values. To get involved with PSF, please call the office at 954 561 2020. John Fugate, the PSF Outreach co coordinator who is presently volunteering and staffing the office four hours a day.

What story should the LGBT
community be paying attention to this week?
SFGN Staff SFGN’s “Speak OUT” is a weekly feature giving a regular voice to South Florida LGBT leaders. Below are some of their answers:
“
Follow Charlie Crist’s public positions on LGBT issues as he positions himself to represent Democrats instead of the right-wing GOP. He recently penned an open letter to Gov. Scott, revisiting his own (Crist’s) governorship, and challenging Scott to get out of the way of Florida lifting the ban on same-sex marriage.” — Toni Armstrong, Founder/Director of BLAST Women of WPB
“
One story: Martina Navratilova proposed to her longtime girlfriend, former Russian beauty queen Julia Lemigova, in a TV suite between the two men’s semifinal matches at Flushing Meadows, in New York City, on Saturday. Their engagement was broadcast on the arena’s big screen as legions of tennis fans cheered the couple on. econd story: At 10:30am on Wednesday morning, Sept. 10, the ruling on marriage equality will come down at the Ft. Lauderdale courthouse.”
S
—Noah Kitty, Rabbi and Executive Director of Congregation Etz Chaim
“
Last week an article posted by Tyler Curry of the Huffington Post titled “Using Sex to Sell HIV Prevention” highlighted the fight to reach those most at risk in the gay community, the 18-25 year age range. Impulse Group South Florida and Impulse Group International as a whole has strongly supported this method, at times, to much criticism. Understanding how to reach the demographic may not be understood by everyone, but events like “I am” will serve as a powerful advocacy moment that will take place this Saturday at the Performing Arts Center, which will reach 300 plus members of that demographic. Hope to see you there and be a part of this revolution. ” —— A.J. Alegria, President of Impulse Group— Fort Lauderdal
Visit SFGN.com/SpeakOut to see more of this week’s responses. Send an Email to Jason.Parsley@sfgn.com if you know of a LGBT community leader that should be or wants to be a part of this list.

The Perez Art Museum Miami, on the shores of Biscayne Bay in Museum Park, examines over 50 years of American printmaking, tracing its historic importance to public debate in the 1930s and 1940s through its role in today’s creative production. “Beyond the Limited Life of Painting” focuses in particular on the generation of artists in the post-war period, who rejected Abstract Expressionism and actively returned to representation, including Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and James Rosenquist. Open daily. For exhibition hours and more information, go to PAMM.org.

Were you the “mad scientist” in chemistry class, mixing all sorts of colorful potions and maybe even setting off a little explosion here and there? Whether you were a science wiz in school or not, the South Florida Science Center, 4801 Dreher Trail North in West Palm Beach, is offering a new program, Molecubar, on Thursday, Sept. 18, guaranteed to make science appeal to adults. Mixologists from the United States Bartenders Guild will be concocting unique and delicious cocktails and treats, including merlot liquid nitrogen ice cream, carbonated mojito spheres and vodka caviar, accompanied by craft beers and hors d’oeuvres. Molecubar is sponsored by the museum’s young professionals organization. Suspension, viscosity, emulsion and dispersion are some of the laboratory techniques that will be employed throughout the evening to engineer these alcoholic oddities. “We love to stir things up at the South Florida Science Center,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO. “Science is sexy and we continue to prove this hypothesis by reaching a new crowd of Science Center supporters. I can assure you, suspensions, emulsions, dispersions and viscosity never tasted so good!” Molecubar joins the center’s wildly successful Science on Tap series, featuring speakers at trendy local bars and coffee shops that regularly attract nearly 100 participants to discuss science in a relaxed setting. This program, based on the national Science Café trend, has covered topics such as the science of human sexual attraction and this month will focus on pet behavior. “With events like Science on Tap and MolecuBar, we are expanding our reach within the community, and having fun while doing so,” Crampton pointed out. For enterprising mixologists who might wish to whip up a scientifically-enhanced
