16 Hospitalized After LGBT Festival Attacked in Russia [Edge Media] Sixteen people were hospitalized Thursday after a group allegedly stormed an LGBT festival in St. Petersburg, Russia, Gay Star News reports. The attackers allegedly sprayed “green paint” and released gas during the event, held at an art gallery, causing those who breathed it in to go to the hospital. GSN reports that lawmaker Vitaly Milonov, who co-wrote St. Petersburg’s anti-gay

The LGBT group Coming Out St. Petersburg and 40 other volunteers spent five months putting the arts event together. Anti-Gay Preacher Drowned Out by Students’ Hymn [Edge Media] Proving that the guitar is mightier than the sword, an anti-gay preacher with a mission of spreading the gospel of hellfire and damnation, got some unwanted accompaniment this week on the campus of James Madison University in Virginia, when counter-protesters drowned out his message of hate with a modern hymn of love.
With rhetoric like “All homo’s are going to hell,” and “If you love masturbation, you know what you are? You’re a potential homosexual,” Ross Jackson, founder of Revival Mission Ministries already faced an uphill battle trying to get students to listen to his message of hate and intolerance.

New poll Shows Support for Amendment 2 at 69 Percent United for Care A recently commissioned poll by United for Care shows strong and stable support for Florida Amendment 2, a measure that would allow for the medical use of marijuana in the state. According to the survey conducted on behalf of United for Care, the main organization advocating for passage of the amendment, 69 percent of likely voters in Florida support this measure with only 28 percent opposed. 60 percent voter approval is needed to pass a Constitutional Amendment in the State of Florida. The findings are significant because they show voter backing of the amendment has remained virtually unchanged since the beginning of 2013. United for Care has conducted four internal polls since January 2013, employing 3 different pollsters. The first survey by Hamilton Campaigns showed 70 percent support in January 2013. The second, carried out in March of 2013 by the Kitchens Group, revealed 71 percent intended to vote “Yes.” A June 2014 poll by Anzalone Liszt Research and Public Opinion Strategies reported 70 percent voter support for the amendment. “If you look at the poll numbers since
the beginning of last year they are virtually unchanged, and they reassert what we’ve consistently said: Floridians overwhelmingly support medical marijuana,” said Ben Pollara, Campaign Manager at United for Care. “Keeping medical decisions in the hands of doctors - not politicians - is simply not a controversial position for the vast majority of Floridians, and that has not changed over the last twenty-one months.” United for Care is the largest organization in Florida urging voters to vote “yes” on Amendment 2. United for care is a nonpartisan campaign with an on-the-ground presence in 18 communities across the state including campaign offices in Miami, Tampa and Orlando.

Clementi Family Become Advocates After Suicide
[AP] NEW BRUNSWICK – Tyler Clementi’s family could have stayed silent after he killed himself. They could have, understandably, hid from the spotlight and attention thrust upon them when he jumped from the George Washington Bridge after his roommate’s webcam captured him with another man inside his Rutgers dorm room. But four years after his death, the Clementis have used the pain they still feel every day to encourage acceptance and eradicate bullying. “We could have retreated,” said Clementi’s father, Joseph, who with his family founded the Tyler Clementi Foundation. “We didn’t want to see this kind of thing happen to other kids

nderway To Change The n ame Sex Marriage [CNN] -- Gay conservatives are undertaking the most coordinated effort yet to change the Republican Party’s position on same-sex marriage. Their approach: one state and one Republican activist at a time. While the official stance of the Republican Party says the “the union of one man and one woman must be upheld as the national standard,” conservative same-sex marriage advocates want to change that. Young Conservatives for Freedom to Marry hopes that by the time the Republican convention rolls around in 2016, they will have recruited or persuaded enough like-minded party activists and young conservatives to remove the restrictive language and replace it with this: “We encourage and welcome a thoughtful conversation among Republicans about the meaning and importance of marriage, and commit our Party to respect for all families and fairness and freedom for all Americans.” To accomplish that goal, Freedom to Marry, a nonpartisan advocacy group, has launched a national grassroots campaign targeting Republican activists -- the most powerful impediment to marriage freedom in the party -- in key presidential nominating states that they can “agree to disagree” on same-sex marriage. Tyler Deaton, campaign manager at Young Conservatives for Freedom to Marry, said they are not looking for an endorsement of same-sex marriage, “but that it’s a valid point of view.” Their campaign is targeted and funded. They have launched in the first four and arguably most influential of the presidential nominating states: New Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada and South Carolina. And the national organization Freedom to Marry has committed $1 million to the effort.

ontana Gay Couple Denied ommunion After Marriage [AP] A gay couple has been told they can no longer receive Communion or participate in church ministry after the new priest at a Roman Catholic church in central Montana learned they had been married in a civil ceremony more than a year ago. The decision set off a split that has cut attendance at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Lewistown, population 5,900. It has prompted an upcoming visit from the bishop of the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings.

and have it affect other families the way it affected ours.” Just weeks into his freshman year, Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22, 2010. His roommate, Dharun Ravi, ultimately served 20 days in jail after being convicted of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and other crimes. The Clementi foundation raises awareness of bullying and cyber-bullying, particularly in the LGBT community. Its initiatives include building support for LGBT and vulnerable youth through partnerships and legislative advocacy, as well as having family members speak at different organizations and groups to encourage more “inclusive environments.”

T.A.T.u. Singer Condemns Bandmate for Anti-Gay Comments
[Edge Media] Last week, a member of the Russian pop band t.A.T.u. made international headlines when she told a Russian talk show host that she wouldn’t accept her son if he turned out to be gay, saying, “I’m not against gays, I just want my son to be a real man, not a fag.” Now, the other member of the group is taking issue with her former bandmate’s comments. Lena Katina took to her Facebook page on Sept. 18 to show her support of the LGBT community, slamming her former t.A.T.U. band member, Yulia Volkova, for the recent anti-gay comments she made on Russian TV. “Hey, all! I am seeing some comments lately regarding my position about LGBT and my religion,” she wrote, as Gay Star News points out. “I can say one thing: God is teaching us to live in love, to be tolerant and not to judge other people! And I do so! Love is love and it is a wonderful feeling! I think everybody should be free to love who they love and be with who they want to spend their life with! Xoxo.” Last week, Volkova went on an unexpected tirade when asked if she would love her son if he grew up to be gay. “Yes, I would condemn him, because I believe that a real man must be a real man,” Volkova, who according to Wikipedia is bisexual, reportedly said. “God created man for procreation, it is the nature. The man for me is the support, the strength of... I won’t accept a gay son.”

illsborough Commission Votes 7-0 To Create Domestic Partnership Registry [Watermark] Tampa – After hearing unanimous support from speakers in favor of a domestic partnership registry in Hillsborough County, the county commission voted 7-0 to move forward in the process of creating a registry for unmarried couples Sept. 17. The move is a total reversal from a vote held in January 2013, where the board split on the creation of the registry 4-3, and ultimately denied it. But things can change in a year and a half. “It’s a different world,” said Commissioner Sandra Murman, who in 2013 voted against the registry’s creation. “Our group, our board and each individual member has worked hard on certain issues and solved so many major problems.”

ikings Special Teams Coach Mike Priefer: ‘I’m A etter Man’ After Sensitivity Classes [AP] MINNEAPOLIS — Special teams coach Mike Priefer has been back on the practice field for the Minnesota Vikings this week, coaching a group of players that struggled last weekend against New England and spending long hours at the office formulating a game plan for the New Orleans Saints. It’s been a welcome return to normalcy for Priefer, who was engulfed in controversy over the summer after an investigation verified former punter Chris Kluwe’s claims that the coach made anti-gay remarks during practice and in meetings. The Vikings suspended Priefer for the first three games of the season, but reduced that penalty to a two-game ban after Priefer completed sensitivity training. “It was very positive,” Priefer told reporters at team headquarters Thursday in his first public comments since the suspension was lifted on Sunday night. “It was very professionally done. Like anything else in life, if you put a lot into it, you’re going to get a lot out of it. I tell my kids that. I tell our players that. So I went into it with a great attitude and I got a lot out of it, to be honest with you.”

news local Boynton Beach Approves Partner Benefits 4 to 1 Mayor votes no; cites dictionary definition of marriage Donald Cavanaugh On Tuesday, Sep 16, 2014, at the city commission meeting, Boynton Beach Commissioners voted 4-to-1 to grant benefits to both heterosexual and homosexual partners of city employees equivalent to those offered to employees in state-recognized marriages. The Commissioners also voted 4-to-1 to update city personnel policies to prohibit discrimination due to gender identity or expression and went on to instruct the city attorney to draft a civil rights ordinance that will include LGBT residents and be voted on later in the year. “We reached out to the city in July asking them to consider these measures and they did,” said Rand Hoch, founder and president of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC) which has been at the forefront of seeking equality for all county residents for more than twenty five years. The one “nay” vote against all of the proposals for equality was from Boynton Beach Mayor, Jerry Taylor. Vice Mayor Joe
Casello and commissioners David Merker, Mack McCray and Michael Fitzpatrick not only voted for the measures, all of them spoke out in support of civil equality. “That’s unusual,” said Hoch. “Often elected officials just put their heads down and vote, but to have them speak out is a sign that things are changing for the better.” Commissioner David Merker was most vocal calling the proposals a “humanity issue” and taking the Mayor to task for holding out-dated beliefs. Mayor Taylor, for his part, seemed to have confused the requests for workplace equality with the issue of marriage equality which he called “immoral,” lauding Governor Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi for standing against it. He went further, citing the Webster’s Dictionary on marriage causing Hoch to chuckle after the vote, “Jerry Taylor needs to get a more current dictionary,” he said. I Googled the Merriam-Webster dictionary’s definition of marriage on the Internet, and the online definition included ‘the state
of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage’. But then, I doubt Mayor Taylor’s dictionary includes the words ‘Googled’, ‘online’ or even ‘Internet’.” Julie Oldbury, Boynton Beach human resource director, responding to questioning from Commissioner Mike Fitzpatrick, explained that the partner benefits proposal applies to both same sex and opposite sex couples as long as they meet certain qualifications, none of which include marriage. At one point the Mayor called the PBCHRC’s efforts to get health care benefits for employees’ partners a “Trojan Horse” going from city to city and getting these laws passed so they can go to the state and say, “Look at all these places that are supporting this, you should be in favor of it, too.’ While there are no Greek armies hiding
among the ordinances and policy changes in which PBCHRC has been instrumental, the group can lay claim to an impressive track record on equality. According to Hoch, as a result of their efforts, domestic partnership benefits are currently offered by the municipalities of Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Jupiter, Lake Worth, Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington and West Palm Beach, as well as by Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach County School District, the Port of Palm Beach, the Palm Beach County Health Care District, Palm Beach State College, Florida Atlantic University, the Children’s Services Council, Palm Tran, Seacoast Utility Authority, the Solid Waste Authority and all five of Palm Beach County’s constitutional offices.
Let’s talk about a contingency basis.

LGBT Folks Lack Health Coverage By Christiana Lilly LGBT people are more likely than their straight peers to not have health insurance, according to a new study. Of those surveyed, 17.6 percent of LGBT people said they did not have health insurance, while 13.2 percent of non-LGBT adults could say the same. “A stereotype of economic advantage persists in both media and public perceptions of the LGBT community,” Dr. Gary Gates said. “These findings really challenge that stereotype and show that disparities in health and well-being associated with sexual orientation and gender identity may be in part due to limited economic resources among LGBT individuals.” Gates is a demographer at the University of California Los Angeles School of Law’s Williams Institute. He based his research on numbers from the Gallup-Healthways WellBeing Index survey, one of the largest of its kind looking at the health of LGBT people. More than 6,000 LGBT people 18 and
older and 166,000 non-LGBT adults were interviewed, bringing about stark differences in the lives of the two populations. When asked if they didn’t have enough money to pay for healthcare or medicine at any point in the last year, 25 percent of LGBT people said yes, while only 17 percent of non-LGBT people said the same. In both categories, women were more likely to not have health insurance, especially in LGBT women, who had 10 percentage points more than straight women. Being an expert in LGBT demographics, Gates said he was not surprised by the findings. However, there have been improvements in just the last year. Both populations experienced an uptick in healthcare coverage after the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare,” earlier this year. Since the end of 2013, the percentage of
uninsured LGBT adults dropped 4.4 percent, and for non-LGBT adults, it dropped 3.5 percent. “These analyses suggest that many LGBT Americans likely look advantage of the ACA open enrollment, and the law may have helped to slightly narrow the gap in health insurance coverage between LGBT and nonLGBT individuals in the US,” Gates said. But why are LGBT less likely to have health insurance? Gates says it’s a number of factors, making the solution a tough one to come by. A combination of economic disparity, stigma, and discrimination by healthcare workers has been a longstnading barttle by the LGBT community. “Efforts to improve the training and sensitivity of health care providers about the unique healthcare needs of the LGBT population are certainly needed,” he said. “So too are developing strategies to alleviate economic disadvantage associated with sexual orientation and gender identity.”

Controversy Continues for Facebook’s ‘Real Names’ Policy David-Elijah Nahmod On Wednesday, Sept. 17, drag queens in San Francisco met with Facebook executives to discuss the social media company’s controversial policy to force them, along with adult film performers and transgender people, to post their legal birth names on their Facebook pages or risk being shut out of their accounts. The meeting was arranged by David Campos, an openly gay member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Campos expressed hope that Facebook would come to realize that this policy was wrong and misguided, but at a City Hall news conference that afternoon, he reported that nothing had changed. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that hiding behind what he called pseudonyms shows a lack of integrity, and insisted that all those who had Facebook pages must comply with the real names policy. For many transgender people, their current names are their real names, as they underwent legal name changes as part of their transition. SFGN spoke to Michael Williams, aka
Sister Roma of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, who explained why protesting Facebook’s real names policy matters. The Sisters are a San Francisco based troupe of drag nuns who serve as goodwill ambassadors for the LGBT community. They often raise critically needed funds for AIDS and other charities. “Definitely a lot of porn stars keep their real identities private because of discrimination and a general stigma around porn,” Sister Roma said. Roma thinks that the need for anonymity goes much further. “There are real safety issues,” she said. “Abuse survivors
and trans people could be subjected to discrimination, and to violence.” Roma also pointed out that people who work in the mental health field often need “protective names. So that their patients don’t find them.” Sister Roma also noted that people in the witness protection program could use protective names on Facebook in order to safely keep in touch with loved ones. “Why take that away from them?” she asked. “I get the impression that this issue has been going on internally at Facebook,” Roma said. “There have been heated discussions inside, so there are people in

the company who agree with our point of view that this policy is discriminatory. That gives me hope.” Roma said that she doesn’t care if people know her real name, but that Facebook needs to think about those who could be put at risk by being outed. “People are distraught because Facebook is their only link to family,” she said. “We are not going to give up for them.” In the meantime, the Sister said that leaving Facebook is an option. “Go to Google Plus,” she said.

Supreme Court
Which Case Makes the Best Case for Marriage Equality? By Lisa Keen Keen News Service
Photo: Wikipedia
The U.S. Supreme Court could announce as early as Tuesday (September 30) which marriage equality case — or cases — it will accept for review this session. But, while the Court has seven marriage equality cases to choose from during its private working conference Monday (September 29), it may not choose any of those seven for review. “If there’s no disagreement [among the circuits], then the Supreme Court has the option of not taking any case for a period of time,” said Roberta Kaplan, who represented plaintiff Edith Windsor in landmark Supreme Court case that struck down the key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act last year. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg made just that point in remarks September 16 at a University of Minnesota Law School forum. Her host asked Ginsburg to comment generally on marriage equality cases before the high court and discuss whether she thinks the court will and should take a case “as soon as possible.” “So far, the federal courts of appeal have answered the question the same way – holding unconstitutional the ban on samesex marriage,” Ginsburg said. “There is a case now pending before the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Now, if that court should disagree with the others, then there will be
12
// 9.24.2014 // SFGN.com //
some urgency in the courts for taking the case. But when all the courts of appeal are in agreement, there’s no need for us to rush to step in. It remains to be seen what the Sixth Circuit would rule, when it will rule. Sooner or later, yes, the question will come to the court….” Her comments attracted attention from Supreme Court observers because the court had been rather quick to put the seven cases on its list for discussion at its first big “long” conference. But Ginsburg was basically voicing what many such observers already know: The Supreme Court is more keen on taking appeals when there’s a disagreement among the circuits. So far, four appeals courts have ruled such marriage bans unconstitutional: the Ninth (in last year’s Proposition 8 case), the Tenth (Utah and Oklahoma), the Fourth (Virginia), and the Seventh (Wisconsin and Indiana). Another Ninth Circuit panel heard oral arguments September 8, in cases challenging bans in Hawaii, Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon, but it widely expected to find once again that the bans are unconstitutional. But a three-judge panel of the Sixth Circuit soflagaynews //
U.S. Court of Appeals heard arguments August 6 in cases from Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee, and it seemed to signal it was prepared to uphold state bans on marriage for same-sex couples. That would create a conflict, but the panel has not yet released its opinion. If there was anything unusual about Ginsburg’s comments last week, it was that she expressed, very diplomatically, the widespread impression that the Sixth Circuit is likely to uphold the bans. Kaplan thinks Ginsburg’s remarks are a strong indication that the Court is more likely to accept a case from a circuit that disagrees with the others –either the Sixth or the Fifth circuit. The Sixth Circuit decision could be released any day now; the Fifth, which covers Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, recently gave the state of Texas an extension of time (until October 10) to file its final brief in Perry v. DeLeon. If the Supreme Court declines to review one of the pending marriage cases this session, said Kaplan, it would have to lift the stays currently in place. “Then marriages between gay couples
SouthFloridaGayNews
could happen in a whole bunch of new states,” she said. That would enable samesex couples to get married in 12 additional states: Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, and Oklahoma in the Tenth Circuit; Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia in the Fourth Circuit; and Wisconsin and Indiana, in the Seventh Circuit. Added to the 19 states that already enable same-sex couples to marry, and the count will stand at 31 and the District of Columbia. That seems unlikely. So, if and when it takes a case, does it matter which marriage equality case the Supreme Court accepts? Does it change the prospects for the decision if it takes a case where the ban has been upheld? Does it matter whether the attorneys arguing the case are seasoned veterans before the Supreme Court? Constitutional law legend Laurence Tribe, the Harvard law professor who argued against state bans on same-sex sexual activity in the 1986 Bowers v. Hardwick case, says, “It could matter in a large number of ways” but he was “disinclined to speculate about at this point.” Lambda senior attorney Jenny Pizer offered some ideas. Though she and others agree the “core arguments will be very
Bathroom Vanities • Showers • Faucets • Tiles Cabinet Handles • Door Locks • Kitchen Organizer Hinges • Glass Hardware and more...
similar regardless of which case or cases the Supreme Court takes,” Pizer noted that there can be interesting and important ancillary arguments. “For example, if the Ninth Circuit rules as many anticipate and invalidates the marriage bans …the Supreme Court would have the heightened scrutiny for sexual orientation classifications question presented more squarely because that is currently the law of the circuit,” said Pizer. “If they take the Baskin [case] out of [Indiana in] the Seventh, there are issues of emergency relief in the context of serious illness that might influence the Court’s analysis and timing. If they take Bostic out of Virginia, there could be a strong temptation to talk more about the historical parallel [with the ban on interracial marriage, in Loving v. Virginia]. And I have to wonder if the same would be true if they were to take [the] Kitchen [case] out of Utah, given the unique history of that state’s marriage laws [and polygamy].” Shannon Minter, legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, noted that state officials are “vigorously” defending the ban in the Utah case, in which NCLR and Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders are helping represent plaintiff couples. The Supreme Court might favor such a case to avoid any procedural snag like it faced in the California Proposition 8 case, which was appealed by a third party which lacked legal standing to file the appeal. Lambda Legal’s national Legal Director Jon Davidson said attorneys for all the
cases think their case is a particularly good vehicle for review, but said, “The questions presented for review are essentially the same in all these cases.” As for whether it matters if seasoned Supreme Court attorneys present the arguments for plaintiff couples, Tribe and others said it probably doesn’t matter. “As long as they’re sufficiently ‘seasoned’ not to make any ridiculous concessions or to overreach in any foolish ways,” said Tribe, “this is not the kind of case in which counsel’s arguments are likely to make much difference.” “There are slight issues in terms of whether a state’s attorney general is defending the law, but other than that,” said Kaplan, “the legal arguments and the plaintiff facts are virtually identical” in all seven cases. Evan Wolfson, head of the national Freedom to Marry group and a participant in the early marriage cases, agreed. “All of the cases that have reached the Court present compelling stories from the plaintiffs, and all are in good hands with strong lawyer teams. Each lawyer, of course, would like to be the one who gets to stand before the Court, but the reality is that, whichever case the Court chooses and whichever lawyers are the lead, it is the strong collective presentation we will make together -- on top of the friend-of-court briefs, the rulings from the more than 30 wins below, and the records and arguments the justices have already considered last year -- that will matter.”

arcus Estimar has been charged M with second-degree
attempted murder and aggravated battery.
From our media partner Sun Sentinel: A Fort Lauderdale personal trainer punched a 63-year-old man about 20 times and then went to meet a client for a workout session, leaving his victim lying unconscious in a park, police said.
First IVF The victim, now in a coma, hadn’t regained consciousness and was not expected to recover, according to the affidavit. Marcus Estimar, 28, of Fort Lauderdale, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder and aggravated battery causing bodily harm or disability. He is being held in the Broward Main Jail on a $255,000 bond. Fort Lauderdale police found Leon Williams unconscious and lying face down at Middle River Terrace Park on Aug. 7, the affidavit stated. Williams was taken to Broward Health Medical Center as a trauma alert with head injuries. He remained in a coma state on Friday, according to the affidavit, and “has been placed into hospice care and is not expected to recover.” Detectives learned during the investigation that Estimar may have been the culprit, according to the affidavit. Estimar, who had been arrested Aug. 25 on an unrelated charge, was being held in the Broward Main Jail. In a Sept. 5 sworn statement, Estimar told detectives that Williams had asked him for a cigarette and after Estimar said no, Williams made sexual advances toward him, according to the affidavit. Williams then took a swing at Estimar

and missed, he told detectives. That’s when, Estimar said, he “took it a little overboard.” “I literally beat the hell out of the guy,” Estimar told detectives. “I would not stop punching him. The first hit knocked him down, and I went on him.” Estimar was “in a rage” on top of Williams and punched him “until his hands got tired,” according to the affidavit. He allegedly struck Williams 15 to 20 times in the face and head, and kicked him once or twice. After the attack, Estimar “spooked” and left Williams lying in the park, according to the affidavit. Estimar, who is a personal trainer, then went to meet a client for a workout session. “You’re already here on sex charges, and now you’re here for attempted murder, which it really does appear to be gratuitous violence toward this individual,” Judge John “Jay” Hurley said to Estimar during first appearance court Friday. “What gives the court great concern is you’ve already gone to prison for a violent act in the past.” Hurley went on to list Estimar’s criminal history, which includes six arrests in less than six years. Estimar has lived in South Florida his whole life and attended Deerfield Beach High School, a man who identified himself as Estimar’s brother told the judge. “This is crazy,” he said of his brother’s charges. “I don’t believe any of the charges. Ever since he got out of prison, he hasn’t been doing anything wrong.” SFGN and Sun Sentinel are media partners.

Man, 35, Killed In Domestic Dispute, Lauderdale Police Say By Erika Pesantes, Sun Sentinel
aurice Goodman, M Blue’s former partner, was the last
known person in contact with the victim.
A man is accused of killing his former domestic partner and keeping the body in his bloodied bedroom, police said. Friends of Otis Blue, 35, became concerned for his well-being and reported him missing to Fort Lauderdale police on Wednesday. Authorities learned that Maurice Goodman, Blue’s former partner, was the last known person in contact with him, according to a police release. Shortly before 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, the body of Otis Blue was removed from the residence at 1222 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale where officials say he was killed several hours earlier. Shortly before 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, the body of Otis Blue was removed from the residence at 1222 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale where officials say he was killed several hours earlier. Early Thursday morning, police received a 911 call about someone screaming in a residence at 1222 N. Flagler Dr., where Goodman lived. The caller “did that intentionally to expedite [police] response to the house,” said Detective DeAnna Greenlaw. Goodman’s roommate allowed police, who were investigating the incident, into their home. Detectives were met with a foul odor when Goodman briefly opened his bedroom door and shut it again, according to a police report. Police said when Goodman was asked whether Blue’s body was in the bedroom, he replied “yes.” Detectives discovered a bloody scene and found Blue on the bed
under covers about 1 a.m., the report said. What led to their dispute was not immediately known. According to the report, Goodman told police: “I hit him in the head” on Wednesday. The medical examiner’s office determined Blue’s cause of death to be multiple injuries sustained from blunt force trauma. Goodman, 40, has been charged with first-degree murder. He is being held without bond at the Broward County main jail. Blue’s heartbroken mother and other relatives gathered Thursday to grieve in Braddock, Pa., a suburb of Pittsburgh, where Blue was from. “I couldn’t do this by myself,” Belinda Blue said, sobbing. “He’s my only child, my only child, my baby. I just can’t wrap my head around this. I just can’t believe he’s gone.” She said Blue failed to report to work at TGI Fridays on Tuesday and Wednesday, something out-of-character for him. She last spoke to her son by phone on Monday evening. Goodman and Blue had met online and began dating in Pennsylvania before moving to South Florida, she said. They broke up earlier this year, said Belinda Blue, who said Goodman was respectful in his interactions with her. Blue enjoyed singing, dancing and making others laugh, his mother said. “He was just a good guy. He was easy to make friends with,” she said. “He loved everybody and everybody loved him.” soflagaynews //

Cher: Six Decades and Counting
Find out what’s been happening with one of the biggest gay icons Michael Cook
The night of Cher’s performance of her new single “Woman’s World” on “The Voice”, she sat down with veteran journalist Mark Steines for a chat about her new album, a possible new tour, and what Cher could possibly do next. SFGN contributor Michael Cook was lucky enough to attend the conversation, along with other journalists and fans, (and got in a quick question with Cher herself)!
Cher, what took you so long to come back? You know it’s funny, I didn’t do a record for eight years and that was ridiculous. I know that I was supposed to, I just didn’t’ want to. I was a little “off” I guess [laughs].
In 1995 you released “It’s A Man’s World” and now on this album your lead single is called “Woman’s World.” Is that a bit of a contradiction? Not at all. “Man’s World” is a beautiful song, but “Woman’s World” is a different thing, they just happen to be friends. “Women’s World” is a gutsy song, while “Man’s World” really tugged at your heartstrings.
“Believe” has some of the same qualities as “Woman’s World” and as we all know, “Believe” was a huge record for you. How do you spot a hit song? Something happens really. I’ve had songs like “Song For The Lonely” and “Strong Enough” that I thought would be hits. When you hit certain songs, they just kind of grab you by the throat. “Believe” was tough, it was hard, people were trying to fix it and I wouldn’t let it go. When I got “Woman’s World” I didn’t know what I felt about it because the demo was so different from what we ended up doing. At the end, it really sung itself. I had one other experience like that with a Diane Warren song, “If I Could Turn Back Time.” That’s another one that basically sang itself; I just happened to be there.

So what can you tell me about the new album? Can we expect a tour possibly? I really don’t know, my record company should have dropkicked me a long time ago! [laughs]. They told me to go into the studio when I was done in Las Vegas, and I didn’t, they finally told me to get serious or there wouldn’t be an album. Then I started to get some cool songs, and then some great ones! Pink gave me two, Lady Gaga and I did a song together also. I think the song with Gaga is brilliant, but she doesn’t like it, so I’ll just be playing that one for my friends. My friend Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters is on “Take It Like A Man” also. The songs are good, they’re dance songs, with titles like “Dressed To Kill.” Some are sad, one is a track Pink gave me, it’s called “Lie To Me,” it’s really hot and really up there, kicking ass. On the bonus tracks, there will be a song written by Diane Warren as well. As for the title, “Closer To The Truth” is a line from one of Pink’s songs. To choose a title of an album, you just kind of sit and think about it and something comes to you. “Woman’s World” is too obvious a title.
From the Cher catalogue, do you have a favorite song? Well I have one! [laughs]. “Song for the Lonely” is one of my favorite songs, actually. There’s a song on the new album about 9/11 called “Sirens” and there’s a song that my friend and I wrote about vampires to originally get on “Interview with a Vampire” and they didn’t want it. There were no other vampires around at that time! [laughs].
What do you think the magic is that you have to make you stay relevant for six decades? I mean, you’ve had a number one record for six decades in a row! I know! I really don’t know the answer to that actually. I haven’t got a clue. It seems like I got off doing what I’m working on, and if it’s a good product at the end they say “oh she’s back”! If it’s a bad product, they say “Oh she’s still alive?”
So this year you are heading to New York City to head the Pier Dance for NYC Gay Pride! [Giggles] I sure am! Those guys are my boys. I’m definitely going to be nervous, for sure! I am definitely excited though. For event information, visit www.nycpride.org
Do you think of your “lovelies” on your website and on Twitter as your friends in a way? Ever get into trouble on Twitter? You know, I kind of do. Some of them come, and some of them go, some of them talk to me and say they can’t understand what I say, but they think I’m really funny! [laughs]. Have I gotten into trouble on Twitter? GOD yes! I didn’t know etiquette, people wanting to start wars, things like that. Like, I kept seeing “MDNA” all over Twitter and finally I said on Twitter “What the F**K” is MDNA”?! It was what “Madge” (Madonna) was calling herself at that time and I didn’t know it! [laughs]
Do you think you would ever make a return to television, like you did in “Sonny and Cher” and “The Cher Show” in the 70’s? Or maybe take a turn on one of the judging/talent shows? You know, I don’t think people would accept a variety show now, its so out of the norm, with all the reality television that’s out there. I don’t think people would get something that moved so slowly like “Cher” or “Carol Burnett” did. As for judging, I mean I don’t know if I would do that. I wouldn’t be mean, I know that. I’d try to make it kind, and I don’t know if I’d lie, but whatever I would see the contestant do, I’d try to give constructive criticism and make what they do better. I’d try to make whatever I say positive. I don’t think you have to demolish someone because they wont have a career at the Met.
What’s next for Cher? Another movie maybe? I don’t know. I really want to do another movie. I want to do something gritty, off the wall, maybe an independent film, really raw; so “Un-Cher”! I’m writing a series for LOGO with my partner also. There are just so many things I want to do. I love directing, doing “If These Walls Could Talk” was a great time. I’d love to direct Morgan Freeman, I just love his work, he’s so honest and he has such depth.

Log Cabin Republicans of Miami Endorse Rick Scott Despite Anti-Gay Stance From Log Cabin Republicans of Miami

Log Cabin Republicans of Miami are proud to Endorse the Re-Election of Rick Scott for Governor of Florida. Actions speak louder than words. Rick Scott Campaigned in 2010 on creating jobs and lowering our debt, he is a man of his word. Unemployment dropped to 6.2% from 11.1%. Florida went from a deficit of 3.6 Billion dollars to a SURPLUS of 1.2 Billion. He cut taxes 40 times and created 620,700 jobs. He also cut cost of prepaid tuitions by nearly $20,000. This has all been accomplished in less than 4 years! Numbers do not lie. We here at LCR Miami are on board with helping our Governor get re-elected so that he can continue the work he set out to do – Make Florida the best State in the Country to live and work in. LCR Miami stands strong with Governor Rick Scott!
As members of the LGBT community, we understand the importance of marriage equality. However we are not and have never been one issue voters. While Rick Scott has not publicly expressed full support for marriage equality, he has never argued against it. He has, however, improved the State of Florida by leaps and bounds! We must remember that as responsible citizens we cannot simply cast a vote based on one issue. We must choose the best candidate who will represent the state and provide a better quality of life for all. We believe this can best be accomplished by improving our economy, creating jobs and cutting taxes, all of which Governor Rick Scott has a clear and proven record on. Again, LCR Miami stands strong with Rick Scott for Governor!
About Log Cabin Republicans of Miami: We are an organization comprised of both Gay and Straight Republicans in Miami Dade County. We believe in limited government, a strong national defense, free markets, low taxes, personal responsibility, and individual liberty. Log Cabin Republicans represents an important part of the American family—taxpaying, hard-working people who proudly believe in this nation’s greatness. It’s no secret that the Catholic Church is probably the most outspoken, dedicated, and well-funded out of all the groups opposing LGBT equality. America’s Catholic hierarchy is packed with homophobes, some of whom have become household names (Timothy Dolan, John Nienstedt, Salvatore Cordileone, Thomas Paprocki). Whether it’s marriage equality, adoption rights, employment non-discrimination, immigration reform, or violence against women -- if a policy advances the rights of or even includes LGBT people, chances are our country’s Catholic bishops oppose it. And they’re in it for the long haul: at their meeting this summer, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops voted to ignore Pope Francis’ call to stop “obsessing” over same-sex marriage and instead vowed to continue their unholy crusade against it for as long as necessary. The fight against equal marriage rights “[is] a major task on a generational scale,” Baltimore Archbishop William Lori said, comparing it to the bishops’ decades-long struggle against legalized abortion. This malicious anti-LGBT spiritual bullying has real-life consequences for LGBT Catholics and their families. It seems like every week we hear another story about a gay church musician fired for marrying his husband, a lesbian Catholic school teacher forced to resign after getting engaged to her longtime female partner, a church administrator who has to choose between keeping her job and signing a “code of conduct” that condemns people like her gay son. And LGBT youth who grow up in the Catholic faith often experience higher levels of anxiety, guilt, and shame around their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. It’s a reality I know all too well -- I myself was one of those queer Catholic kids. The realization that I was gay came with feelings of extreme guilt, serious self-loathing, and sheer terror about the prospect of spending an eternity in hell. I was determined to rid myself of my homosexuality by any means necessary, up to and including suicide, which I attempted when I was 16 years old. Several years later, after I’d finally reconciled my spirituality with my sexuality and I’d met and married the love of my life, I was pushed out of my public music ministry in the Catholic Church in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The diocesan official who banned me said my presence as a married gay man would “cause a scandal.” Although this all happened many years ago and I’ve since left religion altogether,

the wounds never go away; I remember the pain inflicted on me by the Catholic Church like it happened yesterday. That’s probably why I get so irritated by people who react to the church’s targeting and firing of LGBT Catholics and allies with a shrug, a sneer, or a dismissive, self-righteous comment like “what did they expect?” Unless you’ve gone through it yourself, you have no idea what a shattering, life altering, demoralizing, and humiliating experience it is. “What did they expect?” is victim blaming, pure and simple, and the absolute worst way to respond when a person is suffering. Just as maddening as “what did they expect?” is the other response that people always seem to have to the gay Catholic musician, lesbian Catholic school teacher, or church worker with an LGBT child: “why do they belong to an organization that hates them?” This response is completely masturbatory: it makes the person saying it feel good about themselves for what they perceive to be their superior state of enlightenment, but doesn’t actually accomplish much else. Instead of acknowledging the victim’s unjust suffering and offering sympathy and support, this response shames them for being in a spiritual place that’s different from one’s own. It’s also profoundly unhelpful, unless one believes that only certain LGBT people, in certain religious communities and faith traditions, deserve justice and basic human dignity. The fact is, there will always be LGBT Catholics, and there will always be LGBT kids who are born into Catholic families and who will struggle with the guilt, shame, and increased risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide that the church’s homophobic teachings cause. We must care about them, stand with them, and speak out on their behalf when they encounter bigotry, even — no, especially — when that bigotry is expected and routine. The alternative — responding to suffering members of our community with a cold-hearted shrug of indifference because they happen to be Catholic — is nothing short of reprehensible. John Becker is an LGBT rights activist and writer. As a writer he’s best known as a contributor to and the Editor in Chief of The Bilerico Project; his proudest moment as an activist is his undercover, hidden-camera exposé that revealed fraudulent “ex-gay” therapy at Marcus and Michele Bachmann’s Christian counseling clinic. Sun Savvy
Skin damage begins the first minute you’re in the sun Erik DesVaux
Up to 90 percent of wrinkles and dark spots are caused by the sun. One million skin cancer cases are diagnosed every year from the result of this exposure as well, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. What’s the solution? Sunscreen of course. But be warned you’re probably not as protected as you think. Most people only get 25 to 50 percent of the SPF listed on the bottle because they aren’t slapping on enough, or rubbing it on all parts that need protecting. So yeah, that’s the bad news. The good news? Applying sunscreen isn’t rocket science. And there are many great options to choose from. We carry a lot of them at Silk Laser and Aesthetic Centre. So it won’t be hard to find a product that is rewarding for your skin and its health. But here come the protests “But a tan makes me look so much healthier” or “I am getting my Vitamin D.” First of all there is no such thing as a safe tan (unless it’s fake one), whether from the sun or the tanning beds. This is one of the unhealthiest things you can do for yourself and your skin. If your levels of Vitamin D are low, please do not give up sunscreen and do not give up being sun smart, check with you doctor for how many IU’s of Vitamin D you should be taking and make sure to eat sources of food high in Vitamin D as well. You can have the best of both worlds — adequate levels of vitamin D, without your skin suffering the aging consequences of unprotected sun exposure or even worse skin cancer. Besides skin cancer the result of overexposure to the sun is damage, wrinkles, brown discoloration, and dull looking skin. Is it really worth it? So how do we keep our skin healthy? When choosing a product there are some basics to look for. A product’s SPF (Sun Protection Factor) number is a basic indicator of how long you can stay in the sun before getting sunburned. SPF is crucial, but it’s only a measurement of sunburn (UVB) protection. Your skin needs to be protected from the sun’s UVA rays as well. These are the culprits when it comes to signs of aging. To be sure you’re protected from UVA rays you have to check the active list of ingredients to see if zinc oxide titanium dioxide, avobenzone,
or Mexoryl SX is in that list. Also look for antioxidant when shopping for sunscreen, these are a great way to neutralize the free radicals that slip through sunscreen, you can layer one underneath your SPF or apply one that already is loaded with them, like your diet, the more antioxidants the better. Even if the SPF number on your sunscreen’s label is 50 or greater, it still has limitations and can let approximately 3 percent of UV rays penetrate your skin. For daily use, use an SPF 30 or greater. Sitting directly in the sun, even with sunscreen on, is a bad idea because no sunscreen provides 100 percent protection. As a general rule, it’s best to apply sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before sun exposure and you must apply liberally. I recommend putting 2 layers on before heading out to a beach and then reapply every two hours, or after you swim, sweat or down a cocktail. Alcohol depletes your skin’s natural supply of antioxidants, leaving it more vulnerable to sun damage. You must use sunscreen on any part of your body that will see the sun, some common areas forgotten about are the hands, armpits, back of the neck, scalp, ears and top of feet. It’s even a good idea to apply to areas covered by clothing as well, because the rays can go right through clothes — cotton, linen and most swimsuits offer only the equivalent of SPF 5, because who wants a spotty bum right? Now the good news all those fun days in the sun that have caused skin to look less than its best can be treated and somewhat reversed and it’s never too late to prevent further damage from occurring. Some in office options include Peels, IPL treatments which have little to no downtime, to a great at home regimen of products targeted at the issue. These things can have you seeing sun spots run and to a more uniformed complexion. If you have any questions please feel free to visit or make an appointment with Dr. Astaphan M.D, Christina Ribao PA-C or myself. What story should the LGBT community be paying attention to this week?
SFGN Staff SFGN’s “Speak OUT” is a weekly feature giving a regular voice to South Florida LGBT leaders. Below are some of their answers:
“
Have fun and show community support by joining me and over 10,000 expected visitors at the 4th annual Celebrate ORGULLO Festival, celebrating Latino LGBT Pride, on Saturday, Oct. 4 starting at noon on Miami Beach at Collins & 73rd Street with over 70 booths, 2 stages, 50 performers, and much more. ORGULLO is produced by the only local Hispanic LGBT organization - Unity Coalition|Coalicion Unida, where I serve as Of Counsel, and is FREE and open to all …don’t miss it! Visit CelebrateOrgullo.com or UnityCoalition.org for more info.” — Michael C. Gongora, former Vice Mayor of Miami Beach
“
Why would graduates of a Catholic high school in Philadelphia become like neo-Nazis in their brutal attack on a gay couple walking down the street? What messages did they get in their educational experience that said it’s OK to hate gay people enough to break their jaw? Is the firing of a lesbian faculty member at Marian H.S. in Birmingham, MI, a sign of the same spiritual, emotional, and physical abuse?” —Brian McNaught, noted columnist, author and LGBT activist
“
With the recent hate crime that took place on Wilton Drive, residents and visitors alike must be vigilant and aware at all times. Wilton Manors is a great place to live and to have a good time, but one must always be cognizant of their surroundings and whenever possible walk with a group. We must make sure also, that if something does happen that it gets reported to the Wilton Manors PD and not just let it go. BE SAFE!” —— Terry , Director of Development & Public Relations for Broward House
Visit SFGN.com/SpeakOut to see more of this week’s responses. Send an Email to Jason.Parsley@sfgn.com if you know of a LGBT community leader that should be or wants to be a part of this list.

Join the Conversation Readers to Respond to SFGN’s “Truvada Whore” cover story SFGN Staff
Last week SFGN wrote an in-depth story on Truvada and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s anti-PrEP campaign.
Here’s what you had to say: Michael W Hall: yep, wearing a shirt that says #truvadawhore really not helping our cause. this takes all of our recent strides in society and takes it two steps back. Beautifully Different: This is a tough one... I am certainly not against prep completely but to just forget condoms all together and rely strictly on this is not reasonable. This article did not mention all of the many STD s that truvada can’t protect you from. And it is still “fairly” new and requires more research. Furthermore I don’t like the suggestion of having all gay men take this just because they are gay. Gays aren’t the only ones at risk and it is sending the wrong message to the community, straight or gay. Interesting comparison to birth control pills but 50 years later and people are giving the pill to women without teaching them about the possible long term effects which have been tested. The pill has caused strokes, cancer, death, and many other side effects that they don’t bother to tell you about. Beautifully Different: Lots of straight people out there on the pill thinking that the main thing they are to be concerned with is getting pregnant. They are wrong and they continue to think this by reinforcing that this is a “gay disease” , which it isn’t. And many are finding out the hard way. Simon Teixeira: Is good thing they take truvada, this way their bodies will be already adapted to the side effects when is time to take it as their HIV treatment and not as prophylactic.
Sean J Edwards: Rude Simon Teixeira: Being honest.
Michael W Hall: PrEP is not a good thing AT ALL. this is why: HIVpeople taking truvada are not infected, only reinforcing the younger person’s feeling of being “invincible.” Not only that, because of that perceived invincibility, these people may not adhere to the daily regimen, i mean why worry about taking a pill everyday when your life is not already in danger? Without adherence we are in essence creating a generation of people resistant to this class of medication. So when they do become HIV+, and they will, they will already be resistant to truvada and quite possibly other medications in this class. Making it that much harder for the doctors to treat and much more expensive. this is a bad thing all around. Put a condom on or just jerkoff. I will never support something like this. never. this is the wrong direction. And on a personal note, for some of us the side effects never go away. everyone’s body chemistry is very different from the other. some can handle daily “chemo” in their systems and some cannot. Simon Teixeira: Michael W Hall

Ron Wayne, 72, known to South Florida nightclub audiences as ‘Auntie Mame,’ passed away suddenly last week, apparently of a heart attack, in his Hollywood home. A collector of fine antiques and classic urns which graced his home, Wayne had moved to South Florida from the greater Boston area in the early 1970’s, working in the hospitality industry. He then performed and starred as a popular drag queen in multiple venues throughout South Florida over the years. Said Victor Zepka, owner of the Boardwalk, Wayne had worked as a maître’ d and captain in the La Ronde Room in the Fountainbleu Hilton .” He was a charming, classic old guard

entertainer who lived and loved playing to the crowd,” Zepka remarked. His former domestic partner, Michael Ronnie, called Wayne “my lover for three years and my loving brother for the next 38.” Ronnie remembers also the tenure Wayne served as a captain at the Konover Hotel. “He had passion.” Ronnie noted. An only child, survived by an uncle, nephews and nieces, Wayne will be buried at the Gardens Cemetery in Boca Raton. The Boardwalk will hold a memorial ceremony for Wayne next Monday at 7 pm.

Former Westboro Member Bares All
Zach Phelps answers Reddit’s questions
Sasha Razumikhin Zach Phelps, who says he’s left the Westboro Baptist Church, opened up to the Internet last month in a Reddit Ask Me Anything post, a forum on which commenters can, well, ask anything. Here’s Phelps’ introduction to the forum (using edits, a poster can go back to the introduction and edit it if a he or she has a new thought or insight to offer): I grew up in the Westboro Baptist Church all my life, before leaving in February of this year. Proof: http://i.imgur.com/bNd42lU.jpg EDIT: A lot of you guys want to know if it’s true that the objective of the church is to piss people off to the point of violence, sue, and gain profit. the answer is no. :) edit 2: the most common question I receive is about my current beliefs. I still believe in God, but I believe God loves everyone. :) I attend a Unitarian Universalist church. edit 3: I encourage EVERYONE to treat the members of the WBC with LOVE! That will make a difference. Saying “fuck you” can easily be forgotten and it doesn’t change their beliefs but only makes them feel validated. However, to help you get it out of your system, here is a video of an old woman screaming “GO FUCK YOURSELF” at a WBC member: However, I also want you to understand that my family are human beings. This is a GREAT short video (under 20 minutes) made for a college class that really makes you understand them. :)
SFGN checked out the top voted questions. Here they are in their unedited entirety (and their answers, too): 1. From kizzie77: What is the most ridiculous thing they asked/made you do in the name of God? I feel like the most ridiculous thing I was ever required to do in the name of God was pray for others to die.... Since leaving Westboro Baptist Church, I have discovered that I have no malice in my heart... I want everyone to be happy. From ASmileOnTop: Pray for whom to die? That’s just wrong. When I was at Westboro, I did pray for these people to die: President Barack Obama; Lady Gaga; Albert Synder (of Synder V. Phelps, the Supreme Court Case); George W. Bush; and many, many other people. Let me just say this though: I no longer pray for harm to come on ANYONE under any circumstances. I have left behind my former religious convictions.
2. From xSlappy-: What was leaving like? Who took you in your first days out? How did you get on your feet? The night I left was perhaps the worst night of my life... I was in horrible back and shoulder pain, and I was emotionally distraught about it. A few of my cousins, who prefer to remain nameless, took me in... and they helped me get on my feet. I love them a lot for having mercy on me and not leaving me to fend for myself alone. 3. From Team_Realtree: Are you against the church? Yes. I’ve even counter protested them here in Topeka. :) 4. From DongleRocker: How do you feel would be the best way to deal with religious hate groups like the Westboro Baptist Church when they visit your community and attempt to spread their hate? I thought you would never ask! I think that we need to approach them with forgiveness and love... otherwise, they will always think that the world universally hates them, and they will NEVER go away with their hateful message. I’m just sayin’... let’s make ‘em challenge their beliefs a little bit and “kill ‘em with kindness” ;-) 5. From bassocontinubow: Have any of the “higherups” in the church explicitly confided in you that their protests are done for publicity? If not, do you think this to be the root of the protests? No one at Westboro Baptist Church has ever told me that they did their preaching for publicity or for money... It is strictly their religious convictions that drive them to preach their message... They believe that if they don’t preach the words that they are preaching, then they will BURN IN HELL when they die for all of eternity... They act out of fear for themselves and their children, and they will ex-communicate anyone, ever their own wife or children, to save their souls. 6. From drugsneverwork: What are your views towards gay rights now? I fully and with great pride and thankfulness support the rights of all people, whether gay, lesbian, transgender, etc... They are all humans to me, and they all deserve protection under the law. Who am I to stop love or say, “You can’t get married?” 7. From Boornidentity: So many questions man. I’m a British guy, and I think you’re banned from my country? Is that still the case even though you’ve left? What was the family’s positions on the documentaries made by Louis Theroux? Did you ever get the impression that the family was just doing it for... Fame? Or something other than what they were actually saying? Side note, cheers for doing this AMA. Hope you can get on with your life and succeed. 1. Yes, all members of the Westboro Baptist Church are banned from entering the United Kingdom. I’ve never tried to enter England, but my sister went to Canada, and we are banned from going there, too. She was initially denied access, but then explained that she left. I don’t know how the process went, but she was eventually allowed in Canada. I imagine it’d be the same there, but again, I’ve never tried. soflagaynews //
2. Well, they literally believe every single word the preach and the goal is to get the most eyes and ears on the message as possible, so you could say the intention is for “fame” in that way. However, understand, they’re human beings, and like everyone, they would like to be respected and treated with kindness, but they’re not. But they’re certainly willing to make that sacrifice to publish the message. 3. My family absolutely went crazy about how much coverage the Louis Theroux documentaries have gotten; they are so thankful for getting their message out there. They have aired in dozens of countries around the world, at least, on public television... so they thank God for it. 8. From joebob801: What did it feel like to protest the funerals of the little kids that were killed in a school bus accident? I don’t know if I ever did protest the funerals of anyone in a school bus accident, but if I did at the time, I would have felt that I was doing the right thing. When I was at Westboro, I viewed every tragedy as at the hands of an ANGRY God who HATED most of mankind, and I was scared, in all honesty, when I stood on the streets. My world view was that everyone hated me. 9. From madhousechild: 1. Do most family members have secular professions outside of the church? How does their involvement in WBC affect their careers and outside relationships? I’ve heard some of them are lawyers, so do they have successful practices where they take the usual sort of cases? 2. I always got the idea that WBC was mostly family members. What is the actual size of the congregation? Are there people in the church who don’t picket for whatever reason? 3. How do WBC members meet and marry people? Would their spouses have to be church members? How did being in the family affect your dating life? When you were at nursing school and in your job, did everyone know you were WBC? 1. Yes, everyone works =D I would say that most of my aunts and uncles are lawyers, and they do take the usual cases EXCEPT they will not handle first-marriage divorce cases. 2. Approximately 70 members, and yes, most of them are related by blood to the Phelps family, but not all. (No inbreeding going on there, I assure you.) Everyone pickets except for a handful of people who only come to the church for the Sunday Service, like a young man named Jack Wu and an older gentleman named Tony Capo. 3. They can only marry members in the congregation. I never dated when I was in the church, but I once proposed to a member... I got rejected =\ It was so depressing for a while.... But since I left WBC, I have been dating a LOT =D So far, I haven’t tied the knot, but I am always excited to talk to the ladies who I think are sensitive B) Yeah, and everyone I knew from nursing school knew I was WBC... It was quite obvious since Westboro is so infamous here =D
10. From ghansie10: Why does the wbc go after homosexuality so hard instead of other things the bible forbids? Two reasons. 1. Homosexuality is the sin that they interpret to have destroyed Sodom.

Thumbs Up For ‘PRIDE,’ The Movie Tony Adams
For SFGN, I attended a screening of an informative and entertaining new movie, PRIDE, scheduled for national release on September 26. It is inspired by an extraordinary true story. In the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Despite the terrible hardships endured by the small Welsh mining towns, the Union initially rebuffed the offer of assistance. The LGBT group was persistent, identifying a tiny mining village in Wales that took their phone call and sent a representative to London to receive the funds collected. He assumed the “L” in the group’s name stood for “London.” Friendships are formed and the group sets off to make their donation in person. What follows is a well-told depiction of how some hearts and minds can travel the rocky and dangerous road to unity while others cannot, and how standing together makes for unexpected personal victories. At the New York City press screening, a
very discriminating audience applauded and laughed aloud at various moments, a sure indication that PRIDE will be well received. There may also have been some tears brushed away in the darkness during the “Where are they now” sequence at the very end of the film. I asked the film’s director, Matthew Warcus, about the choices he made when deciding how to tell the story of two very different and proud communities in a way that would not offend them. He said, “When I read the script, I had been looking for a film to direct, and I was specifically looking for something that I could put my personal artistic stamp on. So I thought well this is a dilemma because this is the best script I’ve ever been offered but the direction has to be invisible. The characters must be kept front and center at all times. The story had to be delivered in a straightforward almost old-fashioned way. But to manage so many characters and stories at once ended up using all my skills.” When asked what the intended audience for the film was, Warcus said, “Your question goes to the heart of things. Stephen Beresford, who wrote the script when he
heard this story 20 years ago, spent 20 years trying to get people interested in his script as a mainstream film. He kept getting told that it wouldn’t work that way. ‘Why don’t you make a documentary? Why don’t you make a TV drama? Or a radio piece? Won’t work as a commercial film.’ But Stephen figured there was no point in trying to preach to the choir: the trade unionism community or the LGBT community. Why bring them just an issue-based story? The whole idea is disparate groups finding common ground. There is a moment in the film when the ‘gay’ lettered van pulls up into the front yard of a suburban home where a christening is going on. I think that is emblematic of and a metaphor for what the film does: it gets right into a marketplace of people who think these communities are not their own. Of course, even though that was my aim and Stephen’s aim, it would have been a disaster if I had gotten it wrong for the two communities and let them down, and irritated or patronized the LGBT and working class communities. It was a difficult piece of navigation.” Did Warcus have trouble convincing wellknown first-rate actors like Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy and Dominic West to be in the
film? He says, “Quite the opposite. They read the script and said yes immediately, even though many of them are not at the center of the movie.” When asked how the movie was received when shown to the folks who lived in those Welsh mining towns, Warcus said, “When we first screened it to them, we were so terrified for the reasons I mentioned. It was extremely moving. They stood up and cheered. Since then, it’s played in Wales primarily for an audience of trade unions and gotten the same enormous reaction. Same in London at some LGBT screenings. Now, I want the mainstream audience to know that this film is not what they’d expect and that it is enormously refreshing.” PRIDE is exactly the sort of movie that could go from film to stage and then rebloom as a musical in both formats. Think of Billy Elliott or Priscilla Queen Of The Desert. When I asked Warcus if there are plans for that, he said, “Yes, but one would need to make sure that by musicalizing it, we didn’t lose the authenticity and groundedness of it. It would have to be done without trivializing the characters.”

HOMO HISTORY 101 Pier Angelo
B
“
ent” is a 1997 British/ Japanese drama film about the prosecution of homosexuals in Nazi Germany.
People: Rainer Werner Fassbinder
(1945 –1982) was a German film director, screenwriter, and actor. Underlying Fassbinder’s work was a desire to provoke and disturb. His phenomenal creative energy, when working, coexisted with a wild, self-destructive libertinism that earned him a reputation as the enfant terrible of the New German Cinema. Many of Fassbinder’s films deal with homosexuality, in keeping with his interest in characters who are social outsiders. In an interview at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival, Fassbinder said about Fox and His Friends: “It is certainly the first film in which the characters are homosexuals, without homosexuality being made into a problem. In films, plays or novels, if homosexuals appear, the homosexuality was the problem, or it was a comic turn. But here homosexuality is shown as completely normal, and the problem is something quite different, it’s a love story, where one person exploits the love of the other person, and

that’s the story I always tell.” Fassbinder died at the age of 37 from a lethal cocktail of cocaine and barbiturates.
Pier Paolo Pasolini (5 March 1922 – 2 November 1975) was an Italian film director, filmmaker, poet, writer and intellectual. He distinguished himself as a poet, journalist, philosopher, novelist, playwright, newspaper and magazine columnist, actor, painter and political figure. While his work remains controversial to this day, in the years since his death Pasolini has come to be valued by many as a visionary thinker and a major figure in Italian literature and art. While openly gay from the very start of his career (thanks to a gay sex scandal that propelled him from his provincial hometown to live and work in Rome), Pasolini rarely dealt with homosexuality in his movies. The subject is featured prominently in Teorema (1968), where Terence Stamp’s mysterious God-like visitor seduces the son and father

of an upper-middle-class family; passingly in Arabian Nights (1974), in an idyll between a king and a commoner that ends in death; and, most darkly of all, in Salò, or The 120 Days of Sodom (1975), his infamous rendition of the Marquis de Sade’s compendium of sexual horrors.

Sheila’s Conch & Wings SFGN Staff
If you blink you’ll miss it. That’s how small Sheila’s Conch & Wings in Fort Lauderdale is. The restaurant seats roughly 40 people comfortably, but if you show up during live music or football on the weekends, you may be inclined to share the space with 100 or so others. But that shouldn’t matter: the conch fritters and wings are reason enough to squeeze inside. The place is comfy, with Bahamian flags and island music making it feel more like a beach than a restaurant. Sheila’s was previously located in West Palm for seven years but recently relocated to Fort Lauderdale. Many fans still visit for their fix. Start off your visit by grabbing a Kalik — the beer of the Bahamas — and wings (10 for $10). Lemon pepper and garlic flavors are both good, but get them tossed in the island hot sauce if you can handle it. The sauce, like everything at Sheila’s, is made in-house, so the hotness level may fluctuate with each batch made. While the wings are meaty and full of flavor, do not forget about the conch fritters ($5). They are larger than golf balls and may very well be the only thing you eat during your visit. Six are served in an order, with a side of homemade dipping sauce that resembles remoulade, with just a kick more of flavor. If you’re looking for conch without the deep fried extras, grab the conch salad ($9 for a medium order) or crack conch. The salad looks more like ceviche: with pieces of fish, green pepper, onions and tomatoes. If you’re looking to branch out from conch (why would you?), try the whole snapper, shrimp, snapper fillets or tilapia. While seafood is the star, you can even bring your red meat-loving friends. Hamburgers and cheeseburgers are also options. But even the sides, from French fries to the Bahamian favorite pigeon peas and rice, are made inhouse. Fries, both regular and sweet potato, are cut in-house and made to order. If you want dessert, you may want to call ahead before you go. Sheila makes these fresh and may not be available every day, since they sell out quickly — many customers are known to order in bulk when available just to get a taste! The coconut cake, red velvet cake, lemon cake, and pound cake are all $5 each serving. Despite Sheila’s being small in restaurant size, they more than make up for it in food and flavor. While it may be easy to miss them, it’s definitely hard to forget them. See more pictures at southfloridagaynews. com.

a&e theater “Mothers and Sons” at GableStage Photo: George Schiavone
J.W. Arnold
“Mothers and Sons” Over the past 20 years, the LGBT community has seen a whirlwind of changes: drug regimens have made AIDS a chronic and now preventable affliction, gays and lesbians are now allowed to serve openly in the military, gay professional athletes are competing openly, same sex marriage is an option in nearly half the states, the paradigm of the “traditional family” is changing as more and more couples raise children. But what about those who are still mourning the losses of sons, brothers, friends and lovers to the AIDS epidemic so many years ago? This is the premise of “Mothers and Sons,” the powerful Terrence McNally drama that opened last weekend at GableStage at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. Catharine Girard (Angie Radosh) is one of those people trapped in a bitter, unending cycle of pain. Her son, Andre, an aspiring young actor left her constricting home in Dallas to pursue his dreams and explore his sexuality. Just a few years later, at the young age of 29, he would be stricken by the “gay cancer” and buried by his partner of six years, Cal (Michael McKeever). Catharine, newly widowed, unexpectedly shows up at Cal’s home 20 years later on a recent winter afternoon and is shocked by what she finds. Cal, a successful 50 year old money manager, is now married to an aspiring writer 15 years his younger, Will (Jeremiah Musgrove), and together they are raising a 6-year-old son, Bud (alternately Gabe Sklar and Max Leifman). She cannot believe that her son’s “friend” has moved on, reconciled Andre’s death and found joy in life when she has not. Armed with Andre’s unopened diary, she arrived with an agenda, seeking one last act of verbal revenge against the man who obviously turned her son gay and eventually killed him. What ensues is a sharp discourse as her traditional values and idealized vision of
her son are crushed by the revelation of his promiscuity (He was not monogamous and put Cal’s health at risk.) and societal acceptance of the “homosexual lifestyle.” Indeed, McNally’s play is a haunting reminder of the struggles of the gay community before this relatively recent renaissance. At one point, he reminds the audience the AIDS epidemic will soon be relegated from a chapter in the history books to a paragraph to, someday, just a footnote. In fact, McNally has commented in interviews that one of his reasons for writing the play was to remind audiences of the human toll of a practically forgotten era. At times, Catharine comes across as a surrogate for McNally’s generation, voicing resentment at the seeming “easy time” young gays and lesbian now enjoy, unaware of the struggles and losses of their elders. Under Joseph Adler’s inspired direction, McNally’s emotional dialogue is perfectly paced and carefully avoids melodrama. Both Radosh and McKeever, Carbonell Awardwinning actors, give powerful, yet nuanced performances that will certainly earn them more critical accolades and continue to draw tears from audiences. The chemistry between the actors is mesmerizing as Radosh’s Catharine initially refuses to reconcile her pain and prejudices and McKeever’s Cal alternately engages and withdraws, uncertain whether she is capable of understanding and accepting the peace he has found. Musgrove’s strong performance highlights the changing attitudes of a younger generation that is equally intolerant of intolerance and eager to engage “bigots.” Adler and GableStage always offer thought provoking, high quality productions and “Mothers and Sons” is one of those “must see” shows of the fall theater season.
“Mothers and Sons” by Terrence McNally is playing at GableStage, 1400 Anastasia Ave. in the Biltmore Hotel, Coral Gables through Oct. 19. Tickets start at $40 at GableStage.org.

Transparent
New dark comedy about a family facing their truths David-Elijah Nahmod
“Transparent” “One family, no apologies” is the tag line printed across Amazon Prime’s promotional poster for their new series Transparent. Ten thirty-minute episodes have been produced for the freshman season. In the opener, Mort (Jeffrey Tambor) tells his grown children how much he loves them — the kids wonder if dad is dying of cancer. Mort indeed has a secret, but it’s not a terminal illness. After the kids leave, he steps into his bedroom. The camera remains fixed on the bedroom door as Maura steps out in Mort’s place. Now dressed in a floor length, flowing mumu dress, she’s about to come out as a transwoman. And so begins the darkly comic family drama Transparent. At a group therapy meeting, Maura bemoans the fact that she didn’t have the courage to come out to her kids. Meanwhile, across town, Maura’s daughter is arranging a playmate between her child and the child of a lesbian mom. The two women, obviously old, platonic friends, appear to be developing an attraction to each other which clearly embarrasses both of them. Transparent will be a story of many coming outs, as Maura’s truth causes those around her to examine their own lives. Judith Light, beloved to TV audiences for her long running roles on One Life to Live and Who’s the Boss, plays Maura/Mort’s unhappy ex-wife. Light is currently carrying quite a workload. In addition to Transparent, she’s also appearing on TNT’s reboot of Dallas. The actress spoke to SFGN about Transparent, and about her unwavering commitment to equality. You stood up for gay rights and for people with AIDS long before it was safe or “cool” to do so What inspired you to do this? Light: My friends were dying. When I saw the homophobic, bigoted response to AIDS, when I saw how my friends were being treated, I needed to say something. What was happening was unconscionable. I wasn’t a lone voice: other people like Elizabeth Taylor were also speaking up very powerfully and helping to heal the community.
Was there any concerns about harming your career by taking this stand? We form our own families. This was my family, and they were being treated reprehensibly. People wrote to me and said “we’ll never watch you again”, so be it. I did this for my soul. You’ve said that the LGBT community inspires you. In what way? Light: I want to be a caregiver, like them. I want to be like the people who inspire me. I look at the lesbian community, how present and powerful they were in caring for gay men with AIDS. They were remarkable, I’d never seen anything like it. This is my truth, it’s my experience. Can you describe Transparent? It’s really out there! You’ll love the people. Jeffrey Tambor is amazing! Amazon is taking a big chance but people are going to end up loving this family. What’s universal about the series is that everyone has an issue in their family. Maura does something courageous that changes everyone’s lives. Everyone can change to live an authentic life. And so now you’ve added the trans community to those you support? Absolutely. This is the LGBTQ community, the Queer community. Transgender people are teaching us to investigate and study what real gender identity means. The world has never looked at this before. The trans community are role models, they are teaching us about that. Can you tell us about your Transparent character Shelley? She’s somebody wants to be heard. She wants to be understood, she wants so much for her own life to be different. She still loves her ex-husband, and is now with a husband who has dementia. She’s trying to get a different life and doesn’t know what to do. At times she’s very lonely and deeply sorrowful. Look for Transparent at Amazon Prime Instant Video on September 26. All ten episodes produced for the first season will be available for viewing on the premiere date. soflagaynews //
