LGBT Anti-Discrimination Bill Passes Utah Senate
(AP) Utah’s Republican-controlled Senate voted 23-5 to pass the Mormon church-backed anti-discrimination bill first unveiled Wednesday. That speedy approval sends the measure to the GOP-controlled House, where the bill would need approval before lawmakers adjourn at midnight Thursday. The bill bars discrimination against LGBT people when it comes to housing and employment, but it exempts religious groups and protects the rights of religious people to voice their beliefs. Senators voting against the bill also said they were concerned about creating special protections for gay and transgender people, while supporters said it struck a delicate balance between LGBT protections and religious rights. The Mormon Church said this week it is fully behind the legislation, which follows the principles set out in its call for laws that balance religious rights and LGBT protections.
The bill exempts religious groups and organizations from the requirement, and afflicted organizations such as hospitals, churches and schools. It allows employers to adopt "reasonable dress and grooming standards" and "reasonable rules and polices" for gender-specific restrooms and other facilities, as long as they also accommodate transgender people. The bill doesn't spell out specifics about how to do that, nor does it address thornier discrimination questions about whether a business has to serve someone for religious reasons, such as a wedding photographer who objects to photographing a same-sex marriage. For religious rights, it protects the right of an individual employee to express their religious or moral beliefs in "a reasonable, non-disruptive or non-harassing way," as long as it doesn't interfere with the company's business.
oral arguments about those cases April 28. Attorney General Lisa Madigan said Friday that the right of same-sex marriage is to ensure everyone has equal protection of the laws and to affirm that ``all individuals are equal.'' The friend-of-the-court brief the states filed says refusal to recognize same-sex marriage harms the couples seeking it and their families. Non-recognition affects their decisions about education, employment, residency and more.
Freedom, Gay Rights Debated at Colorado Capitol Religious
(AP) There’s a growing conflict between religious groups and gay rights advocates over penalties in discrimination cases. The issue plays out Monday in Colorado, with Republicans proposing measures aimed at protecting individuals and religious organizations in discrimination complaints. One bill prohibits penalties that would force someone to violate their beliefs. Another bill forbids government officials from constraining the exercise of religion. The measures come as a suburban Denver baker fights a discrimination complaint for declining to make a cake for a gay wedding. A Washington state florist, meanwhile, is contesting a judge's ruling against her for refusing flowers for a gay wedding. Colorado's proposals are expected to fail in the Democrat-led committee hearing them. But they highlight ongoing concerns from conservatives about religious freedom as gay rights gain greater acceptance.

In an op-ed earlier this week, published in USA Today, Attorney General Eric Holder wrote, "Marriage equality is an idea whose time has come." President Barack Obama's position on same-sex marriage has evolved. In May 2012, in an interview with ABC News, he announced his support for gay marriage. "At a certain point," he said, "I've just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married." At his 2013 inauguration he said, "Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law." In February 2013, the administration filed a friend of the court brief on behalf of couples challenging California's ban on same sex marriage. Verilli argued that California law provided same sex couples registered as domestic partners all the legal incidents of marriage, but denied them the "designation of marriage." Ultimately, the Supreme Court dismissed that case. Supporters of the state bans have until the end of the month to file their briefs. Thursday was the deadline for briefs in support of petitioners.

bama Administration Formally Supports Nationwide Gay Marriage
(CNN) Calling state bans on same-sex marriage "incompatible with the Constitution," the Obama administration Friday filed a brief at the U.S. Supreme Court in support of couples who are making challenges in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. "The marriage bans challenged in these cases impermissibly exclude lesbian and gay couples from the rights, responsibilities and status of civil marriage," Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. wrote. He said the states have "burdened petitioners in every aspect of life that marriage touches, from the mundane to the profound." The brief marks the first time the administration has formally made a filing with the high court supporting its position that bans on gay marriage should be declared unconstitutional nationwide.

iami Beach Celebrates Centennial with 100 Hours of Free Events
(AP) To stage a centennial celebration, officials here sought local talent to highlight their commitment to creativity and sense of community. Since this is Miami Beach, that local talent includes international music stars Barry Gibb and Andrea Bocelli. Both singers said they arrived here like a lot of tourists, seeking sunshine in the middle of winter. "Coming from New York, where it was so cold, very cold, I arrived here and it was a beautiful sun, and I said, 'OK, I buy a house here,'" said Bocelli at a rooftop event last month announcing their participation in the 100-hour celebration event that starts March 22.
Freedom and commitment go hand in hand.
The centennial celebration highlights the things that make Miami Beach so appealing: fashion, flashy cars, fitness, diversity and celebrities. Starting March 22, a series of free events on the sands of South Beach will include fitness demonstrations, car and fashion shows, a daylong beach party, a wedding for 100 couples and a naturalization ceremony for 100 new U.S. citizens. Gibb and Bocelli will be joined by Gloria Estefan, Wyclef Jean, Flo Rida and other artists for a March 26 concert on the beach to close out the festivities. Tickets for premium reserved seating range from $55 to $525.

an Diego Man Pleads No Contest to Willfully Spreading HIV
(AP) A San Diego man has pleaded no contest to intentionally infecting his former boyfriend with HIV. KNSD-TV reports that Thomas Miguel Guerra entered the plea Monday to violating a state health code against someone with a communicable disease willfully exposing others. Prosecutors say Guerra claimed to be HIV-negative and urged his boyfriend to have unprotected sex. The other man tested
positive for HIV in May of 2013. During his prosecution, a judge ordered Guerra to stay off dating websites. Guerra earlier pleaded not guilty. He changed his plea on the day his trial was to start and now faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. At least two other men alleged last year that Guerra intentionally infected at least two dozen men in and around the San Diego area.

Justices Will Hear Gay Marriage Cases on April 28
(AP) The Supreme Court will hear arguments over same-sex marriage on April 28 and make audio of the proceedings available later that day. The gay marriage cases mark the only time this term that the court has agreed to the quick release of audio recordings. But the court is continuing its ban on providing video of its sessions or even livestreamed audio. The arguments on gay marriage have been allotted two-and-a-half hours on the final Tuesday in April. Audio and the transcript of the proceedings should be available on the court's website by 2 p.m. EDT, the court said Thursday in a statement. The justices denied a request from The Associated Press and other media outlets for the quick release
of audio of the argument Wednesday over the tax subsidies that are part of the health care overhaul. That audio will be made available on Friday. The gay marriage cases come from the Cincinnatibased 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, so far the only federal appellate court that has upheld state bans on same-sex marriages since the justices' 2013 ruling striking down part of the federal anti-gay marriage law. Lawyers on both sides will get 90 minutes to argue whether gay and lesbian couples have a constitutional right to marry everywhere in the U.S. Another hour will be devoted to the question of whether states must recognize same-sex unions performed elsewhere. A decision is expected before July.

(Edge Media) Nearly 380 companies, including Facebook, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson, have filed a friend-of-the-court-brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, urging the justices to overturn a lower court ruling that bans same-sex marriage in four states, USA Today reports. According to the brief, filed for the "Obergefell v. Hodges" case, "without a uniform principle, employers and their employees suffer from significant burdens," USA Today writes. The brief also cites evidence that their diversity and inclusive in the workplace is valuable and banning gay marriage makes it difficult to find and train workers. "State laws that prohibit or decline to recognize marriages between same-sex couples hamper employer efforts to recruit and retain the most talented workforce possible in those states. Our successes depend upon the welfare and morale of all employees, without distinction," the brief, which was filed by the law firm Morgan Lewis on Thursday, reads. It was announced Thursday that the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on whether or not states can ban samesex marriage. Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee have bans on same-sex marriage. Currently, 37 states recognize gay marriage. USA Today writes: "High-tech companies that compete

ill Seeks Protection For Judges Who Won't Marry Gay Couples
(AP) — As Alabama wrestles over the issue of same-sex marriage, some lawmakers are seeking legal protections for judges, ministers and others who refuse to officiate at, or recognize, weddings that violate their religious beliefs. The House Judiciary Committee voted 9-4 on Thursday to pass the bill, which is part of the House Republican caucus agenda for the session. Proponents said the bill is needed so people won't face lawsuits for refusing to go against their religious beliefs, while critics said it would legalize discrimination. The bill states that no person is "required to solemnize a marriage for any person or persons." The legislation does not specifically mention same-sex weddings. It gives civil immunity to churches, ministers, society organizations and other religious-affiliated groups for refusal to recognize, or solemnize, a marriage. Alabama is the latest state to take up "religious liberty" bills regarding weddings and marriage in advance of the U.S. Supreme Court settling the question of whether the U.S. Constitution gives gay couples nationwide a fundamental right to marry. The North Carolina Senate last month passed a bill that would let government officials opt out of duties related to samesex marriages due to religious beliefs. The Georgia Senate on Thursday passed a bill that would forbid state government from infringing on a person's religious beliefs unless the government can prove it has a compelling interest. Susan Watson of the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama said the Alabama bill was broadly written and could open the door to a broad range of discriminatory practices by organizations with religious affiliations. Gay couples began marrying in some, but not all, Alabama counties on Feb. 9 after a federal judge ruled the state's gay marriage ban was unconstitutional and the U.S. Supreme Court refused to put the decision on hold. time stopped performing wedding ceremonies for anyone, gay or straight, so they would not have to marry gay couples. The same-sex weddings came to a halt this week at the direction of the Alabama Supreme Court. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on April 28 over whether gay and lesbian couples have a constitutional right to marry everywhere in the country or if states can ban such unions. A ruling is expected in June.

ppeals Court Allows Nebraska Gay Marriage Ban To Stand
(AP) A federal appeals court on Thursday allowed Nebraska's ban on gay marriage to stay in place, blocking a federal judge's order for the state to begin recognizing gay marriages and civil unions. The decision by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals means that Nebraska's ban will continue until an appeal in the case is decided. Had the appeals court denied the request, Nebraska would have been ordered to recognize gay marriages and civil unions starting Monday. The appeals court did not give a reason for its decision to stay the judge's ruling. But the 8th Circuit did order the appeal in Nebraska's case to be argued on May 12 along with three other states — Arkansas, Missouri and South Dakota — defending gay marriage bans. The appeals court decision came two days after Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson filed a motion to put on hold U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Bataillon's ruling last Monday striking down Nebraska's gay marriage ban.

oogle Reverses Porn Policy After User Backlash
(AP) Apparently Google bloggers like to post porn. A lot. Just three days after saying sexually explicit material would be banned from public Blogger forum sites, Google is backing down. Faced with "a ton of feedback," Google said Friday that it instead will "step up enforcement" against commercial and illegal porn. Google spokeswoman Katie Watson said the company does not disclose how many Blogger users it has nor how many of them would have been affected by the policy change. On Tuesday, Google warned Bloggers that effective March 23 any site hosting nude pictures would be switched to private mode - only available to the authors and invited viewers. That ban came the same day that
social forum and news site Reddit said it would remove explicit photos, videos and links if the person pictured hadn't consented to the image being posted. In an online post Friday, Google's Blogger said longtime users thought it was unfair to suddenly change the policy. The company also was swayed by users who say posting sexually explicit content is part of expressing their identities. Sexually explicit content on Blogger will still be marked by an "adult content" warning. And Google's Blogger policy does not allow users to post nudes or sexually explicit images of someone else without that person's consent.

olorado House OKs Bill to Ban Conversion Therapy for Minors
(AP) Colorado mental health professionals would be barred from practicing gay conversion therapy with minors under a bill given initial approval Friday by the state House. The sponsor of the bill, Democratic Rep. Paul Rosenthal, an openly gay lawmaker from Denver, said the goal is for therapists to help youth pursue acceptance and support for who they are. "Helping the youth explore their identity who they are, not who the therapist thinks they are or who the therapist thinks they should be," he said. The House advanced the bill on an unrecorded voice vote. A final vote this
week could send the proposal to the more conservative Senate, where its chances were less clear. The measure would forbid therapists from trying to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of a person under 18. Therapists who do not follow the rule would face disciplinary action from their licensing board. Republicans worry that therapists could be punished for merely being perceived as trying to change someone's sexual orientation. Rep. Brian DelGrosso, the Republican House leader, said he's concerned about unintended consequences.

news election 2016 White House Watch:
Ben Carson
John McDonald
A self-professed physician is the subject of this week’s White House Watch by SFGN. Dr. Ben Carson, who claims to be a neurosurgeon, angered members of the LGBT community when he stated on CNN that being gay is a choice. In an interview with journalist Chris Cuomo, Carson used prison as a reasoning that someone can turn “gay.” People can enter prison straight and exit gay, said Carson. When asked if he thought homosexuality was a choice, Carson said “Absolutely.” Carson, who has a home in West Palm Beach has formed an exploratory committee, presumably for a U.S. Presidential campaign. It is also presumed he will campaign as a member of the Republican Party. In a YouTube video on his exploratory committee website, Carson says if he runs for President it will be with only one goal in mind: “To heal and strengthen this great nation.” Carson, who was the Director of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Division at Johns Hopkins Hospital, is clearly an opportunist,
who arrived on the political scene at the National Prayer Breakfast when he used his podium time to mentally joust with U.S. President Barack Obama over public policy. Carson is an acknowledged Christian who states he grew up in poverty in Detroit, Michigan, raised by a single mother who was illiterate and a father who was a bigamist. At his famed National Prayer Breakfast address, Carson bemoaned the placement of athletics and entertainment over academics in America’s educational system. “What will maintain our position in the world?,” Carson asked. “The ability to shoot a 25-foot jump shot, or the ability to solve a quadratic equation?”

In the name of public safety Florida Rep. Frank Artiles, R-Miami, is championing HB 583, which has become known as Florida’s “Bathroom Bill.” Trans activists and other LGBT groups say this bill has nothing to do with public safety, but instead is nothing more than a discriminatory bill aimed at the trans community. Last week the bill passed a Florida house subcommittee, the first step to becoming law. Of course it still has to jump several more hurdles before it does. The bill would make it illegal for transgender folks to enter sex-segregated facilities, such as bathrooms, locker rooms or dressing rooms, and would also compel businesses to discriminate against their own customers and employees. In other words a person could only use the bathroom that matches the gender on their passport or license. Artiles claims the bill would protect people from predators dressing up as the opposite sex in order to do nefarious things in the bathroom. The bill is in response to Miami-Dade County recently passing an ordinance, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression, and allows trans people to choose which bathrooms, locker rooms, showers and dressing rooms to use. “I believe that criminals — males — will use this law as the cover to go into the women’s locker room,” Artiles told media outlets. “All they have to say is, ‘I feel like a woman today.’” But LGBT activists say this is just another attempt to discriminate against the trans community. “The Transgender Discrimination bill is perhaps the most discriminatory bill ever introduced in Florida. This proposed bill is unnecessary, arbitrary, and unenforceable,” said Gina Duncan, Equality Florida’s Transgender Inclusion Director. “This bill targets and discriminates against transgender

and gender variant Floridians under the false pretense of public safety.” Sasha Buchert, a Staff Attorney at the Transgender Law Center, believes the bill is unconstitutional. “This mean-spirited bill is clearly unconstitutional and will result in a wave of litigation from both transgender and nontransgender people and will harm Florida’s image as a welcoming state,” she said. “The bill serves no practical purpose other than to direct animus at the transgender community and would be impossible to enforce without a bathroom monitor checking identification at the door. The bathroom bullies that have sponsored this bill would place transgender people at great risk of harassment and violence and moves Florida in the wrong direction.” If this bill does pass though there may be a legal loophole to get around it. Compass, the LGBT center of the Palm Beaches, last year made all of their bathrooms gender neutral in order to educate and be more inclusive. Buchert said this bill would not affect those bathrooms. “This bill will not affect our safe space policy at Compass,” said Julie Seaver, COO of Compass. “We stand behind our message.”

6th LGBT Media Journalists Convening in Philadelphia Diversity to be the focus
Andrea Dulanto
Photo: Facebook. The 6th Annual LGBT Media Journalists Convening is scheduled for March 13-15 in Philadelphia. It’s not the first time that the city has hosted the event. LGBT journalists and bloggers gathered there for the conference in 2013. Sponsored by the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr., Fund and organized by the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA), the event requires an invitation but it also strives to gather a diverse group of LGBT media professionals. This year’s host committee includes Sarah Blazucki of NLGJA, Trish Bendix of AfterEllen, Mark King of My Fabulous Disease, Erin Rook of Source Weekly, Faith Cheltenham of BiNet, and Bil Browning of The Bilerico Project. In an email with SFGN, Browning reflected on the significance and goals of the Convening: “For journalists focused on the LGBT beat, an invitation has become quite the status symbol for being recognized as a valuable community reporter. We specifically aim to bring in not only the LGBT state/local newspapers and large audience bloggers, but
we also search for up-and-coming voices and try to lift up the voices of people of color, trans folk, and women.” Browning elaborated on the importance of diversity: “Many of the larger outlets are still run by cisgender white men so we try to also reflect the diversity that is our community — especially in online journalism. Often these journalists are the only ones reporting in any depth on issues like race, class, and gender. The intersectionality of our community and how we can translate LGBT-specific needs into broader issues is the focus of this year’s Convening.” In 2015, presenters and attendees will explore issues related to the topic “So Now What?” As Browning noted, these are “issues that have been relegated to the back burner during the marriage battles” and the Convening will offer “sessions on religious liberty bills, intersectionality, self-determination, the role of government in promoting diversity, bisexuality, race and gender-specific topics, as well as how to better report on HIV/AIDS stories.” Over 70 attendees and presenters from outlets in 23 states are scheduled to participate in this year’s event. The keynote address will be delivered by Reverend Dr. William J. Barber, II, President of the North Carolina NAACP and one of the leaders of the Moral Mondays protests in North Carolina. LGBT journalists who are not attending the event as well as anyone interested in LGBT media can follow the Convening at #LGBTMedia15 on Twitter.

Louganis Says Life Goes On
Olympic gold medalist shares his story of living with HIV/AIDS John McDonald In three words, Greg Louganis relayed the worst of living with the thought of AIDS. “Secrets isolate you,” Louganis told a standing room only audience Friday at the Embassy Suites in West Palm Beach. His words were a reference to his training prior to the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. That’s when Louganis, a U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame diver, tested positive for HIV. “I had nobody to talk to,” Louganis said. “I felt like I was living on an island with barely a phone for communication to the outside world.” Louganis brought international attention to AIDS after he hit his head on the diving board during the Seoul Olympics. He cringed as he watched a video of the dive shown just before his speech at Friday’s luncheon commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Comprehensive AIDS Program of Palm Beach County (CAP). “With the stigma and my sexual identity there were so many secrets,” Louganis said. Louganis ultimately came out publicly about being HIV positive and a gay man. He said his doctor in Boca Raton at the time of his diagnosis decided to treat the virus aggressively with AZT, a pill Louganis said he took every four hours. “Words do not even describe,” said Toni May, the luncheon’s emcee. “The whole time he was living with HIV and taking the drug AZT and yet he still managed to compete at that level. Everyone in this room knows taking AZT is not just taking an aspirin.” That aggressive early treatment, coupled with healthy decisions along the way (going on nine years sober), is why Louganis is here today. The five-time Olympic medalist is now 55 and “proud of it.” “It’s incredible when I look at this program and go through the years and look how far we’ve come and how CAP has evolved with those times. We are living longer,” Louganis said. “When I turned 40, I was like ‘shit’ I’ve got to get a job so I can pay my bills because I’m going to be here for a while.” For 30 years, FoundCare’s CAP program has led the way in providing services to those with HIV/AIDS. Last year alone the program assisted more than 3,000 people in Palm Beach County. Several community leaders were presented

with awards recognizing their commitment to CAP through the years. Bob Bertisch was awarded CAP’s Visionary Award for his work in providing legal aid; Larry Osband, who raised heterosexual awareness of the disease, received the Advocacy Award; Ronald J. Wiewora, M.D. and Chief Medical Officer of the Health Care District of Palm Beach County, received the Larry Lee Memorial Award for his compassionate care; and the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church was honored for graciously opening its doors — and hearts — to CAP clients. “I can remember when people with AIDS were not allowed on planes and they had to use plastic forks and spoons,” said Palm Beach County Mayor Shelley Vana, whose telephone rang during her speech at the podium. Times have indeed changed, however, in the world and Palm Beach County is a leader in HIV/AIDS care, said those gathered at the Embassy Suites near the Palm Beach International Airport. “Where we once directed our energies on helping people living with HIV/AIDS maintain their dignity and avoid stigma as they prepared for their inevitable passing, we now help our clients manage chronic disease and achieve positive health outcomes,” said Yolette Bonnet, FoundCare Chief Executive Officer.

Together for 55 Years Miami 'Legacy Couple' Finally Ties the Knot Rick Karlin

Frank Petrole (center left) and Marc Rudick, together for 55 years, are flanked by their best men Maurice Colton (far left) and Norman King. Wedding bells chimed to the surprise and delight of guests who gathered recently for a Miami Beach Gay Pride “Legacy Couple” fundraiser at the BB&T Bank South Beach branch on Thursday, Feb. 19. Frank Petrole and Marc Rudick, together for 55 years, and Mary Maguire and Jackie Emmett, together for 53 years were slated to be the honorees of the event announcing BB&T’s sponsorship of the Legacy Couples float in the Miami Pride Parade. Petrole and Rudik surprised all attending when they announced that they would be legally married during the event. Pride’s publicist Richard Murry of The Murry Agency, who is an ordained minister, officiated the extemporaneous ceremony. Miami Beach Gay Pride created the Legacy Couple program during the very first year of its existence as a way to honor trailblazing couples in committed relationships for 10 years or longer. The concept has since been embraced by other Pride events around the country. The fundraiser also honored Mary Maguire and Jackie Emmett, also from Fort Lauderdale, who have been together 53 years. The other Legacy Couples featured at the event represented couples ranging from 16 to 52 years together. Additional guests were Pride donors and sponsors and BB&T Bank representatives and clients. BB&T Bank’s support includes the Legacy Couple float for the parade and a “Pride Chapel” on the beach during the festival where current and future Legacy Couples can get legally married. “BB&T supports the individuals and organizations that broaden our perspectives and strengthen the diverse fabric of our communities,” said Arthur Costa, BB&T Regional Multicultural Markets Officer. “That’s why BB&T is proud to be a part of this day of pride and celebration of the 2015 Legacy Couples. After 55 years of happiness together, Frank and Marc chose last Thursday’s event as the date and time to get married. Truly an honor for me and BB&T.” Miami Beach Gay Pride will take place April 11 and 12. Saturday’s beach party will feature live performances from multiple stages and festival booths. Sunday’s parade, led by Grand Marshall Mario Lopez, will feature more than 100 marching contingencies, 35 floats and 2,000 participants; the festival that follows will include performances from four stages, refreshments, fireworks and 145 LGBTQfriendly vendors and businesses.

Your Facebook Wall is S**t Pier Angelo
A day at the beach. The greatest single contribution made by Facebook to society is an unintended byproduct of the ubiquitous social media platform. By having a Facebook Page you can no longer hide in the closet. The process of "coming out" is a thing of the past. Your posts, your "friends,” your pictures, the videos you upload, tell the story of your life for you. On Facebook being gay is soooooo 1990. Once you sign up you relinquish everything about yourself, you make your life a 24/7 broadcast. You trade privacy for public exposure. It makes it so much easier, especially for young gays, or anybody fitting one of its 56 gender identity options, to come to terms with themselves. Statistics say that 70 perfect of Americans have at least one gay friend on FB. Society's perception of who we are today, the progress we have made (see the speed of gay marriage), is in part due to the openness of social media. But that is as far as I go. Otherwise I have no use for Facebook. It's email or texting or spam on crack. I don’t need, or want, “150 digital friends.” A person's circle of actual (e.g. real) friends remains small and it is limited not by technology but by human nature. The psychological stress that a close relationship requires is considerable and we all have limited emotional capital to spare. The paradox is that, courtesy of social media, we have become more detached and isolated from one another, even lonelier, because this hyper interactivity is shallow if not ephemeral. I am blessed with a few special, wonderful, friends whose face-toface interaction I would not trade for a Facebook page. I would miss their laughter, their facial expressions, their quips, their jokes, their heartfelt impromptus comments, the sound of their voices, the animated conversation about a movie or an event, the eyes rolling, even their anger. Things that digital media has not yet achieved in transmitting through the glare of a screen. We meet fewer people now, we gather less and when we do our bonds are not as meaningful because we are distracted by wanting to contact those who are not present. It is as if people are instantly bored with whoever is sitting in front of them and so they click and wait and click and wait for somebody else's page to chime in. Don't wait for me. I promise that if I want to see pictures of your trip to Bumfuckville I will ask for them. If I want to know how bad the latest restaurant you tried is I will call you, or we can discuss it over two, or four, glasses of wine. Otherwise I really don't give a damn about what you had for breakfast, how your ferret is doing or if you picked up your dry cleaning. My interest in your digital life would be sparked, perhaps, by an Instagram of you on your knees, in the middle of the desert, with Jihadi John behind you brandishing a sword. Then I would probably spend a few seconds checking it out and evaluating how becoming orange

is on you. Otherwise I have better ways of wasting my time. It is called the Transparent Age; to me it's the Opaque Reality Age. Most people live in a state of absolute dependence of their own, often imagined, views. Face it, you are muttering to yourself. Nobody really gives a shit about what you say on your wall. "Your friends" might hit the like button only because they want you to do the same when they post some inanities on theirs. Your comments have also the power to piss off somebody else reading them even though they were not directed at them. The emptiness of it all makes me want to turn the TV on and find a televangelist. He is certainly more stimulating. And if I want to read something boring I will print the transcripts of a Ted Cruz filibuster. It's verbal garbage, blatherskite plain and simple. All those bits and pieces of useless narcissistic information are forever circling the internet like space junk. Everything is swallowed into oblivion but nothing goes away, and it is always retrievable, coming back to bite you when you least expect it. And all those pictures? Please, you are not taking and posting a selfie you are taking a lonely. The fad is "personal branding" and over share. In order to over share you need something captivating to share. Furthermore a "status update” is NOT status. The truth is that often we are more interesting when we remain silent. Facebook allows its users to “like” everything from photos, to pages, to comments, to statuses. The obsession is to garner the public approval of everyone on the web, checking the phone every 20 seconds to keep track of incoming likes and then reaching a virtual orgasm from witnessing the number of "thumbs up" increase. Teenagers find it boring these days, the novelty is gone. So, does FB really matter? Is it still relevant? In the early days there was a rush to find everybody one could think of, amazed that it was possible, not considering whether they really wanted or not to reopen a contact with a long lost school chum or an estranged family member. Now people are busy with the sophomoric practice of "unfriending." It is so pointless; it’s a passive aggressive act. I long for the door slamming and shouted threats of never speaking again that got the point across clearly, not the cowardly click that quietly disconnects us. If you must, just grow apart, like you should. A friend of mine made the mistake of posting the announcement of her father's death. She was devastated when she promptly received 53 "likes.” Sadly, not one of these 53 "friends" picked up the phone, or wrote a card, to convey their condolences or lend a word of support. I loved George Clooney when he said: “I’d rather have a rectal examination on live TV by a fellow with cold hands than have a Facebook page." I am so clicking the "like" button on that.

Equity in the Doctor's Office
Dana Rudolph Mombian
A news story has been circulating about a Michigan pediatrician who, “after much prayer,” refused to care for a newborn because the baby had two moms. It’s a story of personal discrimination and ignorance — but also indicates systemic problems. Jami and Krista Contreras said they'd chosen Dr. Vesna Roi of Eastlake Pediatrics because of her holistic and natural approach, reported the Detroit Free Press. After a prenatal visit, they went to her office last October for the first appointment with their six-day-old daughter. Dr. Roi was not there, however. Another pediatrician in the practice, Dr. Karam, told them Dr. Roi had decided that because they are lesbians, she couldn't care for their baby. On February 9, once the story began to spread, Dr. Roi explained in a letter to the Contreras that she "never meant to hurt either one of you" and that "after much prayer following your prenatal, I felt that I would not be able to develop the personal patient doctor relationship that I normally do with my patients. . . . She also thought that if she shared her decision during the first appointment with their child, it would "take away much of the excitement." Ultimately, I think the Contreras will be better off with a doctor who is more comfortable with their family—and to the extent that Dr. Roi herself realized that, I cannot blame her. Perhaps her refusal to serve them came less from animosity and more from insecurity over how to interact with a type of family she had never encountered before. Separate But Equal Florida’s “bathroom bill” is transphobia at its worst
Brendon Lies
BrendonLies@gmail.com
HB583. Heard of it recently? If not it’s known as Florida's “Bathroom Bill” — a full-fledged assault on the transgender community. According to the law, it would make it a crime if a person is "intentionally and voluntarily entering a single-sex facility for a different designated sex." The bill was proposed by Rep. Frank Artiles, a man who admitted during an interview that he had never thought about what it must be like to live as a transgender person. HB583 has already made it through the first round of cuts, and is on its way to becoming a reality. If passed, it would become effective as of July 1, 2015. The lawmakers behind this bill have stated that it is meant to keep “male predators” out of restrooms, but it’s really nothing more than an attack on trans women, who, by the way, face the highest level of discrimination in the LGBT community. If you search for male predators who crossdress to lure in victims, you won’t get any results. I can tell you from experience that using the restroom you were raised from birth to stay away from, but know you belong in, is a frightening but vital step towards claiming your own gender identity. Many people have laughed off this law. I've been asked jokingly, "What will they do? Make everyone drop their pants?" Of course not. In public it would only mean that an overlycurious stranger would have the power to rattle. As I've learned in my adventures, even if you don't “pass” well, people will usually not make much of a fuss, that is, if you're a trans man. For trans women though the threat is a bit more severe. Still, the idea that there would be enforcement is comical, but the comedy distracts from a very real threat that this law actually does carry. For trans people all over the state who are just coming out, or have already come out at their current job, this law is the definition of a living nightmare. There would be no more open-minded discussion regarding whether or not your employer will allow you to use the restroom that matches your gender identity.
Transgender employees would be forced to humiliate themselves. Beards in the ladies room are tough to hide, and a trans woman entering a men's room is actually forced to compromise her safety (very much the opposite of what Artiles might claim). If employees try to fight their employers' intentions, they could be threatened with arrest. Employees who take a chance but are caught by their boss? The cops would be called. As for those who are already out, but facing a great deal of stress from their employers for their identity? All the boss would have to do after July 1 is wait outside the bathroom during the employee's break, then dial the police. This is a huge vulnerability to trans people, who should not be forced to live 40 hours a week in the closet just to survive at a job that doesn't fully support their transition. Then there are students. Whether it's grade school, high school, or college, it would be incredibly easy for a child to fall target. Many schools have cameras outside restrooms, which would make it easy for a biased school administration to prove that child is a queer outlaw. Is this really the direction we want to go? A lot of people have also rolled their eyes, because there are such things as "family restrooms.” But even if all buildings were suddenly equipped with this specialized type of restroom facility, keeping us separated is still not a solution. In 1896, a similar concept was known as racial segregation. In 2015, we call it transphobia. HB583 passive-aggressively targets trans people by brushing off the necessity of using a restroom, saying it is "voluntary" for gender non-conforming people and therefore should cause them no harm. But whether in public, at work, or in school, any human should know there is nothing voluntary about using the restroom. This bill is a bigoted hate law that would put all transgender Floridians at risk, but keeping us out of bathrooms will not erase our identity. Trans men are men, trans women are women, and we demand to be seen as nothing less. Separate but equal has no place in 2015.

Do Not Attend the Gay Polo Tournament in April
Ever wonder what happens to those horses when they’re no longer useful? Photo: Wikipedia
It was with extreme disappointment, but not surprise, that I learned that there is a Gay Polo League operating in the U.S. and that the 6th Annual International Gay Polo Week will occur at the International Polo Club in Palm Beach in April, 2015. Abused and murdered from dawn of recorded history, and likely eons before that, in cultures throughout the world, I would expect gay men and women to be more compassionate to animals abused and murdered for food and entertainment than the general population. Sadly, they’re not, as evidenced by there being sufficient interest in polo not just to form a team, but to warrant an international league. The Gay Polo League’s website is nicely done. Attractive and easy to navigate, it features images of well groomed, smartly dressed people of different ages, sexes and ethnicities, all of whom are gay and have really good teeth, riding handsome, apparently happy, horses in gorgeous settings. Copy includes, “We’re a community that shares a love for adventure, fun and the beautiful, challenging sport of polo,” and “Polo is a sport rich with history, tradition, speed and skill. We encourage you to join us and experience it firsthand.” It’s all very lovely and Ralph Lauren, with no images or descriptions of the profound suffering horses endure in training, competition and, for those that aren’t shot following an injury on the field, retirement. I understand that in the official rulebook of the U.S. Polo Association, horses are never referred to as horses, but “mounts,” clearly to encourage a perception that these living, sensitive creatures have no more value than a dune buggy or Big Wheel. At 55 pages, only one-half of one addresses the safety of horses. Whips, spurs and riding crops are not prohibited, protection for horses’ back legs is not required and a 5-minute “time out” is
available during which “visible blood” can be cleaned off a horse and a rider may change clothes. The mandate of the USPA insofar as horses are concerned is to “take positive action to protect players and the sport from the perception of animal abuse.” Bless the Association’s heart for not pretending to care about horses at all. As with racing horses, carriage horses and those used for labor, polo horses are slaughtered when they’re no longer useful. Others, like Prince Harry of England’s “Drizzle,” die of heart failure on the field. Most retired, sick or injured horses in the U.S. are sold at auctions and transported in long, harrowing rides to either Mexico or Canada, where they’re killed for food consumed by other animals and, yes, humans. As tragic and disturbing as all animal slaughter is, there’s something about frightened horses watching each other have their throats cut that is particularly devastating. Please query the Internet for horse slaughter. Your search will list sites that aren’t as pretty as The Gay Polo League’s, the most galling part of which is this bit of whiny copy: “Our goal is to provide a safe place for active people to enjoy the excitement and competition and the camaraderie that comes with team sports, knowing that many of us didn’t have as many opportunities to play a team sport growing up.” Whatever. Whaa-whaa-whaa. The league is concerned only with the players and spectators and the sad childhoods I have no doubt most of them had. Nothing about the horses…I mean, “mounts.” Please avoid the April event and discourage everyone you know from participating in this cruel, exploitive activity.

President Barack Obama’s decision to restore full relations with the government of Cuba sent a tidal wave through South Florida’s body politic, where opposition to the “Castro regime,” like support of the State of Israel, is required of all politicians, regardless of party. This is a personal issue for me, having been born in Havana, migrating with my family to the United States during the first years of the Revolution, growing up in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood and witnessing more than fifty years of Cuban-American politics. To my parents, who sacrificed so much to rescue their children from Communist rule, the survival of the Castro brothers and their Revolution was an intolerable injustice. My father went to his grave still hoping to return to a free Cuba and my mother, who is still alive, will never forgive “that man” (Fidel Castro) for destroying her life and her country. Most of my parents’ generation of Cuban-Americans, those who shared their sad experience (or worse), doubtlessly agree. My parents’ generation did not create the Cuban diaspora. Cubans have been coming to the U.S. since the 19th century, escaping Spanish colonial rulers and a succession of corrupt Cuban presidents long before the Revolution of 1959. But it was the generation that left Cuba in the decades after 1959 that made Cuban-Americans a powerful political bloc, especially in Florida. For a while Cuban exiles were pawns in the Cold War, to the extent that a white Cuban family like the Monteagudos became minor celebrities in the small South Carolina town where we settled for a while before finally moving to Miami. Blessed with a combination of (mostly) white privilege and minority status, Cuban exiles took advantage of a favorable economic environment and their own native talents to build lives in Miami similar to those they enjoyed in Cuba, but without Communism. Unlike other Latino immigrants, this first generation of CubanAmericans became Republicans, because the GOP was more sympathetic to their cause and also because it agreed with them on most economic and social issues. Simpatico politicians like Jeb Bush welcomed CubanAmericans into the Republican coalition he was leading to victory in Tallahassee; and encouraged ambitious young Cubanos like
Senator Marco Rubio. Though Rubio’s parents came to the U.S. before the Revolution, Rubio continues to promote anti-Communism as a major part of his American Dream. Not all Cubans-Americans agree with Rubio’s violent opposition to the Castro brothers and everything they stand for. As the first generation of post-Revolution exiles dies out, their children and grandchildren seem more willing to accept a change in U.S.-Cuban relations, though most of us of course continue to disapprove of Cuba’s one party, authoritarian government. Even so, Florida’s Republican politicians - and even some Democratic ones, like Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz continue to mouth anti-Castro slogans. Who can blame them? Florida is a major player in presidential politics, and Cuban-Americans are major players in Florida politics. The Clinton Administration’s handling of the Elian Gonzalez affair might have given the Sunshine State to then-Governor Jeb Bush’s brother, and even last year Charlie Crist’s vocal opposition to the Cuban Embargo might have given more than a few Cuban-American votes to Governor Rick Scott and his Cuban-American running mate, Carlos Lopez-Cantera. Therefore, when President Obama announced his Cuban initiative on December 17, the old warriors who gather at the Versailles Restaurant on Calle Ocho screamed bloody murder, and politicians like Bush and Rubio readily agreed. President Obama is right. Our frosty relationship with Cuba, and the dreaded Embargo, are relics of the Cold War that need to be overhauled. They benefit nobody except politicians who use it to get votes and money from exiles who, like my parents, wish to return to the “good old days” (which never existed). Whether we like it or not, the Cuban Revolution is here to stay, having survived more than five decades of U.S. attempts to demolish it. We have no problem trading with Communist regimes like those of China and Vietnam. Why should we hold Cuba to a higher standard, just because it is 90 miles away from Key West? Though the GOP Congress will do its best to keep our anti-Cuban policies in place, because they can, most Americans agree with Obama that his initiatives will only benefit the Cuban people and someday, perhaps, make them free.

HOMO HISTORY 101 "ERIN GO BRAGH" EDITION Pier Angelo

XP E N
In 1922, after the Irish War of Independence and the Anglo-Irish Treaty, the larger part of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom to become the independent Irish Free State; and after the 1937 constitution, Ireland. The six north eastern counties, known as Northern Ireland, remained within the United Kingdom. As a newly independent country, Ireland turned into a very insular, conservative society, dominated by the Catholic Church. Homosexuality was illegal and underground until the 1970s when the Campaign for Homosexual Law Reform was led by David Norris, who campaigned for then-current criminalization of homosexuality to be dismantled. In 1980, the case was taken before the Supreme Court of Ireland; losing the case, Norris took it to the European Court of Human Rights, which ruled in 1988 against the Irish government. The laws were finally reformed in 1993 by Minister for Justice Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, due to Labour Party pressure. In 2011, civil partnership legislation was passed by the Dail and Seanad, and was enacted into law. Also, in 2011, Dominic Hannigan and John Lyons, both of the Labour Party, became the first openly-gay TDs to be elected to the Dail, and Katherine Zappone became the first openlylesbian senator. Today, attitudes in Ireland towards LGBT people are increasingly liberal. A 2013 survey showed that 73 percent of Irish people agreed that "same sex marriage should be allowed in the Constitution.” On 19 February 2015, Taoiseach Enda Kenn announced that the Marriage Equality referendum would take place on Friday 22 May, 2015. The referendum, if passed, will add the wording "Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex" to the Irish constitution. Also on 21 January 2015, the Government announced that a revised draft of the Children and Family Relationships Bill will give cohabitating couples and those in civil partnerships full adoption rights. The bill is set to become law before the May same-sex marriage referendum. The Government hopes to have the bill become law in March.

was an Irish writer and poet. He became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, his plays, as well as the circumstances of his imprisonment and early death. At the height of his fame and success, while his masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), was still on stage in London, Wilde had the Marques of Queensberry prosecuted for libel. The Marques was the father of Wilde's lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. The charge carried a penalty of up to two years in prison. The trial unearthed evidence that caused Wilde to drop his charges and led to his own arrest and trial for gross indecency with other men. After two more trials he was convicted and imprisoned

for two years' hard labour. In 1897, in prison, he wrote De Profundis, which was published in 1905, a long letter which discusses his spiritual journey through his trials, forming a dark counterpoint to his earlier philosophy of pleasure. Upon his release he left immediately for France, never to return to Ireland or Britain.
David Norris (31 July 1944)
is an Irish scholar, independent Senator, and gay and civil rights activist. Internationally, Norris is credited with having "managed, almost singlehandedly, to overthrow the anti-homosexuality law which brought about the downfall of Oscar Wilde,” a feat he achieved in 1988 after a fourteenyear campaign. He has also been credited with being responsible for rehabilitating James Joyce in once disapproving Irish eyes".
Kathleen O'Brien (1897 – 1974) was an Irish writer whose books dealt
with issues of female sexuality in ways that were new and radical at the time. Her 1936 novel, “Mary Lavelle,” was banned in Ireland and Spain, while The Land of Spices was banned in Ireland upon publication. In addition to novels, she wrote plays, film scripts, short stories, essays, copious journalism, two biographical studies, and two very personal travelogues. A feminist, her novels promoted gender equality and were mostly about young women yearning for independence. Kate O'Brien's determination to encourage a greater understanding of sexual diversity — several of her books include positive gay/lesbian characters — make her a pioneer in queer literary representation. She was very critical of conservatism in Ireland, and by spearheading a challenge to the Irish Censorship Act, she helped bring to an end the cultural restrictions of the 1930s and 40s in the country. Like many other Irish writers and artists, she lived much of her life in England.
Graham Norton (4 April 1963) is an Irish comic presenter. Based in
the United Kingdom, he is the host of comedy chat show The Graham Norton Show on BBC One. He also presents on BBC Radio 2 and is the BBC television commentator of the Eurovision Song Contest. Norton is known for his innuendo-laden dialogue and flamboyant presentation style, and has won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Entertainment Performance on five occasions. In 2014, he was named in the top 10 on the World Pride Power list. Tree decorated – check. Cookies made? Groceries purchased, shopping finished, school programs scheduled, Santa visits done? Check, check and… check. You love the holidays, but there’s no denying that they can be stressful. The last thing you want is to put more on your To-Do List, but when you add “All I Really Want” by Quinn Caldwell, you’ll see things in a more-relaxed way. But first, the disclaimer: Caldwell says that this book isn’t meant to be all hintsand-tips. It won’t help you get organized, simplify, or create the “Best Christmas Ever in five easy steps.” Caldwell says that’s not his job, and it’s not God’s; instead, you’ll find a few complications here, as well as some hope for “a little holy breathing space” – beginning with the first of Advent. Christmas, as you undoubtedly noticed, didn’t start after Thanksgiving: retailers have had their holiday decorations up for months. They couldn’t wait for the season, but it may seem as though wait is all you do lately. There is a virtue in waiting, says Caldwell, and Advent is when to find it. Pause; “be prepared for little bursts of delight.” It takes wide-open eyes to do that, though, and time, which is at a premium these days. Caldwell says that lack of time is exactly when you want to “add a holy something to your to-do list.” Volunteer, make a donation to a charity, visit someone who needs you, be kind to someone. And on that last one – if you “get stuck, look in the mirror.”
SouthFloridaGayNews
Go to church; now’s when you need people around you. Let your kids believe in Santa, because he teaches them about “dwelling in mystery.” Sing with someone, even if you “can’t carry a tune in a bucket.” Keep in mind that, like anybody, God would surely rather that his birthday party is “full of fun.” And yet, if you’re having a bad Christmas, remember that that’s why we have Christmas in the first place. Christmas was “born in defiance of all that stalks the world and tries to snuff its light.” “If the only spirit you can get into is low,” says Caldwell, “you’re just who God is looking for.” Two words: De. Lightful. There’s just no other way to describe “All I Really Want.” And here’s the thing: I didn’t expect to like this book. I figured it was just more guilt-inducing platitudes, more blah-blahblah-Christmas, but nothing could be further from the truth: it’s joyous! Author Quinn Caldwell uses humor and a bit of irreverence in prodding his readers into slowing down, noticing, seeing God’s gifts in addition to those under the tree. He makes us think about Mary and Joseph. He makes us laugh about God’s “epic party.” Sprinkled with Bible verses, meditations, and tiny prayers that can be recited day and night, I think this is a perfect book for anyone who’s had enough ho-ho-ho and wants to replace it with more ho-ho-holy. If that’s you, then “All I Really Want” is a book to check out.

24 Hour Diners
Rick Karlin
What do you do after a night of drinking and dancing?
Head to one of the 24- hour diners. Even if you hooked up, it’s not a bad idea to stop for a bite to eat first. Not only will you get some needed sustenance for the activities when you get home, but you’ll also get a good look at your date in something other than bar light. If after spending a meal with your potential partner, you change your mind, you can always bow out gracefully after your meal.

Lester’s Diner is such an authentic 50’s style diner that you expect Richie, Potsie and the rest of the Happy Days crowd to be seated at the next table. The giant cups of coffee are great whether fighting a hangover or for a pick-me-up. The family owned and operated business has been serving South Florida for nearly 50 years. In addition to traditional breakfast fare, sandwiches and diner style entrees, Lester’s offer a full selection of pastries baked fresh daily on its premises. Breakfast dishes are all priced $10 or less, sandwich combos a buck or two more. Among my favorites is the pastrami melt. For dinner, the Greek combo with spinach pie, moussaka, pasticcio, stuffed grape leaves and soup or a small Greek salad is a delicious steal at $12.49
3
Peter Pan Diner 1216 E. Oakland Park Blvd. Oakland Park, 954-565-7177 This family owned restaurant has been dishing up big, no-nonsense breakfasts, daily chef specials, authentic Greek specialties and homemade bakery treats for more than 35 years. Daily lunch and dinner specials are great bargains. For example, either Salisbury steak or beef goulash is $7.95, while a lamb shank with orzo is just $9.95, served with a choice of soup or salad. Greek dishes are a specialty and my favorite is the chicken Santorini, a chicken breast broiled with tomatoes and feta cheese, then topped with wine sauce. The triple salad combo from the low carb section of the menu features three large scoops of excellent tuna, chicken and crab salad, with salad greens. There’s easily enough for two people. The pastries, all baked on premises are a real treat and worth the calories.
Floridian Restaurant 1410 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-463-4041
The Floridian has been a tradition among generations of Fort Lauderdale residents since 1937. The Las Olas location makes for some fun people watching from the sidewalk tables, although you’ll also have your full serving of auto fumes as well. The dining room is kitchy with pictures of celebrities everywhere and comfy office chairs surrounding some of the large tables. Service is kind of haphazard and not particularly knowledgeable about the menu. Your best bet is to stick with breakfast classics or salads. My favorite dish is the Greek salad topped with seared tuna. There are a number of options for the health conscious. The “Super Lean Breakfast” features four egg whites, grilled tuna steak or salmon, sliced tomatoes and toast for $14, while two hard-cooked egg whites with grilled turkey breast and sliced tomato on your choice of bread is $6.95
4
Flashback Diner 4125 SW. 64th Ave Davie, 954-321-3400 1450 N. Federal Hwy., Boca Raton, 561-750-2120 220 S. Federal Hwy., Hallandale Beach, 954-454-8300
The sandwiches are all named after celebrities, most of which won’t be familiar to younger readers, but that’s okay because the clientele is generally somewhere between 80 and death. We laughingly call this place the Hot Flashback Diner. Some of the pairings of sandwiches and celebrities make sense, such as the Ricky Ricardo Cuban sandwich and the Anthony Quinn gyro, some are a mystery (the Merv Griffin tuna salad, Mr. Rodgers BLT) and some are hysterical; the Rudolph Valentino foot long hot dog. The food is so good here that I will occasionally put up with the horrible service (we once sat 30 minutes waiting for a pair of sandwiches). I return because I am addicted to the Holy Cannoli French Toast.

Leslie Jordan, “Say Cheese, My Life in Front of the Camera,” at the Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 SW 9th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, Saturday, March 14 at 8pm.
“I’m just an aging show pony, but they trot me out anyway,” sighed Leslie Jordan during a recent phone interview. The Emmy Award-winning actor is best known for his role as Karen Walker’s diminutive foil, Beverly Leslie, on “Will and Grace,” and he’s returning to South Florida on Saturday, March 14 for one performance at the Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale. The show, “Say Cheese, My Life in Front of the Camera,” is not one of his “cleaner” acts, he warned. “Oh, I’m not going to really clean it up. It’s not X-rated, just something you’d never hear in church,” the comedian explained. After a long pause, Jordan added, “But it is a ‘gay’ church….kinda like a theater, I’m sure there’s lots of drama.” Jordan will share thoughts on his journey looking for love “in all the wrong places” and featuring the photographs of his friend Jim Cox. “I’ve never had a proper gay boyfriend,” Jordan explained, noting he has a propensity for falling for good looking, straight twinks, so-called “gay for pay” rent boys. “My spiritual adviser keeps asking me why I keep repeating the same mistake over and over.” Jordan actually squeezed the Fort Lauderdale performance into a weekend appearance at the Florida Roundup, a major annual meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous members in Miami. “I guess they’re not anonymous anymore,” he said with his wry chuckle. He has been open about his own struggles with substance abuse and dogged recovery. “Recovering alcoholics don’t have attention spans, so I’ll just have to adjust.”
These appearances are just two of 44 he makes each year from LGBT cruises to corporate events for Disney and Frito-Lay. “When you get to that corporate level, you can make some real money,” Jordan said. He was most recently seen on television in the United States in 2013 on “American Horror Story: Coven.” He wasn’t written into last year’s edition, “Freak Show,” but hopes to return in next year’s installment with Lady Gaga. Jordan also made a disastrous run for the prize on “Celebrity Big Brother” in the United Kingdom, only to be foiled by his nemesis castmate, actor Gary Busey. “I had no idea what I was getting into,” he explained. “We were 20 minutes outside of London. I thought it would be like Downton Abbey, but instead there were 14 people under one roof who are ‘celebrities’ and it was just awful!” “I’m hypoglycemic and really have to watch what I eat. When my blood sugar goes awry, I turn into a nightmare. They took away my food….I suffered sleep depravation because everyone was sleeping in one room….people would fart and their feet smelled,” Jordan added. He remains circumspect about his career, however. “I may have painted myself in a corner because the only parts they offer me right now are aging queens. But, one thing I’ve learned in 33 years in Hollywood is it all goes in a cycle and I really do think I’m nowhere near where I’ll be when things turn around,” Jordan concluded.
Leslie Jordan, “Say Cheese, My Life in Front of the Camera,” will be presented at the Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 SW 9th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door and $55 for VIP seating and reception. For more information, go to SunshineCathedral.org.
