Hoteliers Say it’s Hard To Make A Buck Off Gays Owners of a New York hotel brand believe gays are not big spenders. In an interview with New York Magazine, Ian Reisner, coowner of Out NYC Hotel, said gay people have a sense of entitlement in what they expect from the hospitality and service industry. “Do you know how challenging

it is to make a penny off a gay person?,” Reisner told the magazine. “I’m gay, I don’t pay cover. I’m gay, where’s my comp drink?” Reisner and his partner Mati Weiderpass, who are gay, created a firestorm last month when they hosted a dinner for Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz.

Sohn To Seek Dania Beach Commission Seat John McDonald

Daniel H. Sohn, a well-known Broward County politico, has announced intentions to seek a seat on the Dania Beach City Commission. The 24-year-old Sohn is the chairman of the Broward County chapter of Democracy for America. In a telephone interview with SFGN, Sohn said he intends to hit the ground running this summer in the southeast coastal city of Dania Beach. “I’m not campaigning on anything that is not doable,” Sohn said. To immerse himself into the community, Sohn said he will work a series of shifts at Dania Beach small businesses to better understand the needs of his constituents. The campaign is non-partisan and Sohn describes his approach as progressive. “Climate change is real,” Sohn said. “Dania Beach is a coastal city and we must be prepared for hurricanes and beach erosion.” Sohn recently disclosed he is gay, coming out to friends and family on his Facebook page. He said he felt it was important to be authentic with voters when entering the race for public office.

“I’m very happy with where I’m going,” Sohn said. Dania Beach is the first incorporated municipality in Broward County, first chartered in 1904. It contains colorful antique shops and enjoys a close proximity to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Sohn said he hopes to reverse the trend of business closings in Dania Beach, citing the loss of Jai-Alai and the International Game Fish Association’s Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum as examples of opportunities to reclaim. The election for the at-large commission is set for November of 2016.

Gay Man Admits to Sexually Assaulting Married Man at Las Vegas Pool Party

(EDGE) A Florida man admitted last month that he "couldn't help himself" from sexually assaulting an unconscious married man who passed out during a boozefueled pool party at a Las Vegas hotel last August, the Smoking Gun reports. Gustavo Banegas, 22, pleaded guilty to two felony charges connected from the attack, which took place at the MGM Grand Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. According to court records the Smoking Gun obtained, Banegas, who was celebrating his birthday with friends and family, and the victim, a Utah man who was on vacation with his wife, both attended the hotel's "Wet Republic" pool party. A report from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says Banegas assaulted the victim in a bathroom near the entrance "Wet Republic." Police were called to the MGM after a hotel security guard went to the bathroom and found "a Hispanic Male Adult who appeared to be attempting to have anal sex with an unresponsive White Male Adult." The security guard who walked in on Banegas told police that he found Banegas with his swimsuit his ankles

and that he had "a full erection." The guard added that Banegas was "appearing to begin having anal sex" with the victim. The victim told the authorities a man he did not know entered the bathroom while he was sitting on the toilet and "began making sexual advances towards him." When the man started to stroke his penis, the victim said he pushed the man's hand away. The victim also said he passed out and was "unable to recall any other incidents that took place inside the restroom." Both men were reportedly heavily drinking hours before the attack. A criminal complaint states the victim was "mentally or physically incapable of resisting or understanding the nature of Defendant's conduct." "Wet Republic" is a 54,500-square-foot venue that houses a number of pools, bars, and cabanas. The event is for adults-only, and the popular DJ Tiesto happened to be playing music on the day of the attack. After pleading guilty to the assault on April 14, Banegas is scheduled to be sentenced in August. He remains free on a $100,000 bail bond.

"I cannot express how much this will mean to our community," Ramos said. "We lost so many people along the way to suicide, and we don't want to lose any more." The change will improve the lives of many in the community who can't afford or don't want to have surgery, he said.

Rejects Challenge to NJ Ban Court on Gay Conversion Therapy

(AP) The Supreme Court has turned away a challenge to New Jersey's ban on so-called gay conversion therapy for patients under 18 years old. The justices did not comment on their order Monday, which followed similar action last year that left California's therapy ban in place. Lower courts dismissed lawsuits challenging the ban, which New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed into law in 2013. Supporters of the therapy tried to interest the court in the issue by presenting it as a restriction on the free speech rights of counselors and doctors. The case is King v. Governor of New Jersey, 14-672.

(AP) Switching gender on birth certificates could get a lot easier for transgender people in Hawaii. A proposal to allow people to change gender on their birth certificates without having to undergo surgery cleared a legislative hurdle Thursday, sending the bill to the full Legislature for a vote on the brink of a legislative deadline. The breakthrough was an emotional moment for Kaleo Ramos, a transgender man who contemplated suicide as a

Under the proposal, instead of having a sex change operation people could get a note from a medical provider saying the person's birth certificate doesn't reflect their gender identification. Having identification that reflects one's outward appearance is critical when applying for jobs and signing up for services, advocates say. "It means the world to a lot of people to allow them to lead the life that they're meant to lead and to get really basic necessities," said Rebecca Copeland, a volunteer parent advocate with Equality Hawaii. If the bill passes the full Legislature, Hawaii will join at least six states with a similar law.

ommittee OK's Santa Fe Gender Neutral Restroom Proposal

(AP) A proposal to establish gender-neutral restrooms in Santa Fe has passed one hurdle. The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that Mayor Javier Gonzales' initiative barely passed Monday before a City Council committee. The public works committee voted 3-2 in favor of the restrooms, which are designed to cater to the transgender community. The proposed ordinance calls for businesses and government buildings to label single-occupancy restrooms as family restrooms that could be used by anyone, regardless of gender. The designation would not apply to restrooms with multiple stalls. The proposal includes an added provision in which the city would study how much it would cost to give family restroom signs to businesses. Gonzales, who is openly gay, first announced his proposal during his State of the City address in February.

orth Dakota State Representative Outed on Grindr

A North Dakota Republican lawmaker was caught sending sexually explicit photos and messages on the dating/hookup app Grindr and is saying it is retaliation for his recent voting record on gay rights. Rep. Randy Boehning (Fargo-R), who recently voted against Senate Bill 2279, which would have prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, said that he was outed because of political payback by an unnamed Capitol staffer. Boehning’s activity on Grindr became apparent when Dustin Smith, a 21-year-old Bismarck man, told The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead that he recognized Boehning from Grindr.

According to Smith, the legislator was communicating with him under the user name Top Man! and he sent Smith sexually suggestive messages and an unsolicited photo of his genitalia. “How can you discriminate against the person you’re trying to pick up?” Smith said. Boehning has since confirmed that he is Top Man! and that “the 1,000-pound gorilla has been lifted” off of his shoulders. He said that there were people who knew that he was gay, but many of his family members and friends did not. Boehning expressed he has an attraction to women and a sense of relief toward not having to hide his sexual orientation.

(AP) Smith College, the largest of the all-female Seven Sisters schools, is changing its policy to accept transgender women. The new policy, which takes effect for those applying this fall, followed a year of study. The women's college had previously asked undergraduates to have consistently identified as female since birth. Smith President Kathleen McCartney and board Chair Elizabeth Mugar Eveillard said in announcing the change on Saturday since Smith's founding, "concepts of female identity have evolved."

Smith will not admit students who were born female but identify as male. Other women's colleges, including Mount Holyoke and Wellesley, also have changed their policies to admit transgender women. The advocacy group GLAAD said it worked with Smith alumnae for the change. GLAAD President and CEO Kate Ellis said Smith joins a growing number of colleges that "respect and afford equal opportunity to all women."

ick Santorum: 'Love and accept' Bruce Jenner

Photo: Gage Skidmore.

(CNN) Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is clarifying — but not stepping back from — surprising comments this weekend in support of former Olympian Bruce Jenner's decision to come out as a transgender woman. "If he says he's a woman, then he's a woman," Santorum told BuzzFeed during a roundtable discussion in South Carolina on Saturday. Santorum continued: "My responsibility as a human being is to love and accept everybody. Not to criticize people for who they are." The potential Republican presidential contender said while he believes it's fine to criticize people "for their behavior...as far as for who they are, you have to respect everybody." "These are obviously complex issues for businesses, for society, and I think we have to look at it in a way that is compassionate and respectful of everybody," he added. Jenner spoke out publicly on his transition from male to female in an interview with Diane Sawyer last month. Santorum's comments marked an unexpected show of

support for the former Olympian decathlete from a candidate who emerged as the favorite of social conservatives during the 2012 presidential race, and once likened homosexuality to bestiality. As recently as last month, he said he wouldn't attend a gay wedding for a family member or loved one. But shortly after his comments on Jenner drew widespread media attention, Santorum took to Facebook to clarify that he wasn't proposing any policy changes to accommodate transgender individuals. "Many of you may have read a story published by the website BuzzFeed where I was asked for my thoughts regarding Bruce Jenner. My comment affirmed Jenner as a person, made by God in His likeness as we all are. It was meant to express empathy not a change in public policy. # compassion" Santorum wrote. At the federal level, those laws include the military's ban on transgender individuals, and a number of state legislatures are battling over measures that would require individuals to use the bathroom that corresponds with their biological sex, as listed on their birth certificate. soflagaynews //

Capitol of Wisconsin.

This Week: Religious Discrimination

Madison Bans Discrimination Against Atheists, Non-Religious

(AP) While conservatives in Indiana and Arkansas were explaining last month why their new religious objections laws weren't invitations to discriminate against gays, the leaders of Wisconsin's capital city were busy protecting the rights of another group: atheists. In what is believed to be the first statute of its kind in the United States, Madison banned discrimination against the non-religious on April 1, giving them the same protections afforded to people based on their race, sexual orientation and religion, among other reasons. It's hardly surprising that such a statute would originate in Madison, an island of liberalism in a conservative-leaning state and the home of the Freedom from Religion Foundation. But the ordinance's author, Anita Weier, said it didn't arise from an actual complaint about alleged discrimination based on a lack of religious faith. "It just seems to me that religion has spread into government more than I feel comfortable with," said Weier, who left the council after the statute passed. "It just occurred to me that

Religious Objection Bill Follows Supreme Court Hearing Texas

(AP) The national debate over religious objection laws roiled again Thursday in Texas after Republican lawmakers abruptly pushed a new proposal on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court hearing historic arguments over gay marriage. Even advocates for same-sex couples say the bill, aimed at allowing clergy members to refuse officiating marriages that violate their beliefs, largely duplicates protections that already exist. However, the legislation drew attention because of its timing — weeks after filing deadlines had passed in the Texas Senate and on the same day the landmark gay marriage case was heard in Washington. It threatened to break a relative calm in the Texas Legislature over proposals that gay rights activists say would invite discrimination. Unlike in Indiana and Arkansas, where religious objection laws for businesses created sweeping backlash, Texas has largely sidelined such contentious measures. But a big difference now is the muscle behind the clergy bill: new Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, whose office holds considerable power in Texas. Patrick, a firebrand tea party leader, asked Estes to carry the proposal with a month remaining in the 140-day session. A hearing scheduled for Thursday was temporarily delayed after Democrats objected to the short notice. Estes

religion was protected, so non-religion should be, too." Atheists and other non-believers, though, say the statute marks an important step forward for those who aren't religious. "I think Madison is way ahead of the curve," said Todd Stiefel, the president of Openly Secular, which helps nonreligious people become open about their absence of faith. Stiefel said people who tell their employers or family members that they are not religious face rejection and harassment. He said he's heard from atheists who were fired the day after sharing their non-religious views with their employers or disinherited by their parents after opening up about their lack of faith. Even though her ordinance passed without objection, Weier said her fellow council members seemed reluctant to embrace her idea or connect their name to it. She also said timing played a large role in her decision to propose the ordinance. "If I'd been running again, I don't think I would have brought it forward," Weier said. "I think there's discrimination against atheists."

said the bill should not be controversial. "We're not talking about the caterer, the flower arranger, we're talking about the minister," Estes said. "Ministers should have the right to uphold their religious beliefs." Estes noted that Justice Antonin Scalia this week wrestled with the effect legalized gay marriage would have on clergy members who would object to officiating a ceremony for religious reasons. Mary Bonauto, who represented same-sex couples in the case, told Scalia that clergy members already have those protections. In February, a lesbian couple in Austin became the first same-sex couple to wed in Texas since voters passed a constitutional ban on gay marriage in 2005. They had received a permission from a judge, and Texas Republicans are now pushing laws that would bar state and local government employees from licensing or recognizing samesex marriages, regardless of how the Supreme Court rules.

Religious Objections Turmoil Ind. Likely to Spill into Next Year

(AP) The colorful fliers passed out by aides to Gov. Mike Pence and House Speaker Brian Bosma last week highlighted what both called numerous accomplishments of this year’s legislative session. Left unmentioned in those handouts was the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which put an unflattering national spotlight on Indiana amid a rancorous debate over whether the law could provide legal cover for discrimination against gays and lesbians. The furor that erupted across social media, at water coolers and on national television programs sparked major corporations and groups to vow to steer clear of Indiana and the NCAA’s leaders to challenge the law just days before the men’s basketball Final Four. And though legislative leaders scrambled to add non-discrimination language to the legislation to quell the storm, the effects are likely to be felt long into 2016 as debates

over gay rights shape the next General Assembly session and the gubernatorial campaign. Bosma acknowledged last week that the religious objections uproar posed “one of the biggest distractions — I guess that’s an understatement” — for lawmakers this year but said “it will be a memory.” That might be wishful thinking. Legislative Democrats say they plan to push next year to add nondiscrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity to the Indiana civil-rights law covering education, employment, public accommodations and housing. Former Indiana House Speaker John Gregg, a Democrat who narrowly lost the 2012 governor’s race to Pence, announced his 2016 candidacy last week by saying Pence’s focus on social issues has given the state “a bad name.” Republicans are also taking heat from supporters of the law. A group of conservative pastors blasted Pence and top GOP lawmakers during a Statehouse rally last week, accusing them of selling out religious liberties in order to quiet complaints from big businesses. House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath of Michigan City said he expected the uproar over the religious objections law to cost Republicans legislative seats in next year’s election. He said the law has done lasting harm to Indiana’s economy by discouraging people and businesses from moving into the state. Devon Sayers. CNN.

A printing company has apologized after the owner of its franchise in Suwanee, Ga. refused to print wedding invitations for a lesbian couple. AlphaGraphics owner Alan Adkins denied service to Paige Beckwith and her fiancé, Megan, on religious grounds, reports the Georgia Voice. Beckwith, who stated she was in tears at Adkins’ response, took her complaint to the company’s main office, which issued an apology and offered to print the invitations for free. AlphaGraphics corporate office declared it does not condone discrimination of any kind. The situation highlights concerns brought about by Republican state senator Josh McKoon’s “religious freedom” bill.

U.S. Congressman Jared Polis (D-Colorado) introduced a bill last week offering broad new protections for student data. The bipartisan measure covers digital information for students attending public schools from kindergarten through high school. “There are few regulations protecting student’s privacy and parental rights, and the ones that do exist were written in an age before smartphones and tablets,” Polis told the Denver Post. Republican Luke Messer of Indiana is the bill’s co-sponsor. Polis, 39, is the first openly gay parent to serve in U.S. Congress. news election 2016 White House Watch:

Vermont’s Bernard “Bernie” Sanders finds his way into SFGN’s White House Watch after announcing last Thursday his intentions to campaign for the U.S. Presidency. The Independent two-term U.S. Senator will seek the Democratic nomination and is off to a fast start in fundraising, raking in $1.5 million in the campaign’s first 24 hours, say aides. There is no questioning Sanders’ stance on LGBT issues. An avowed socialist, Sanders has repeatedly advocated for LGBT rights and protections and as a member of the U.S. House (1991-2007), he voted against the Defense of Marriage Act. Sanders’ announcement is sure to place him to the left of Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton in the 2016 race. The Wall Street Journal pounced on the news, stating in its weekend editorial pages, “He has no chance of winning, but he could prove instructive for voters as a demonstration of where the American political left wants to go.”

Southern ADAP Advocacy Summit Talks About Marketplace Discrimination

Sean McShee

About 100 people attended the Southern Regional AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) Summit in Atlanta on April 10. Discussions at this summit concentrated on the effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on Ryan White Care. Their goal was to identify problems and strategize solutions. This information can inform the reauthorization of Ryan White Care (RWC). Michael Ruppal of The AIDS Institute spoke about ACA Marketplace Discrimination. When an insurer makes an insurance plan unattractive to people with an expensive health condition, marketplace discrimination occurs. It mixes discrimination at the customer level with an unfair business advantage at the corporate level. In the most common form of marketplace discrimination, the plan clusters together those drugs primarily used to treat a specific expensive disease. The plan then places this cluster onto the most expensive tier of covered drugs. Insurance companies have additional tactics. One involves high co-insurance rates; another involves a set of complicated preauthorization procedures. A high-tech tactic involves simply blocking potential customers from searching the list of drugs covered by the plan. Since only some insurance companies engaged in this practice, marketplace discrimination results from decisions of particular insurance companies, rather than any issue with the ACA. Ruppal reported that The AIDS Institute found that in 2013 four companies, Coventry One/AETNA, Cigna, Humana, and Preferred Medical, had placed all or nearly all, HIV anti-retrovirals on their most expensive tiers. On May 14, 2014, The AIDS Institute and the National Health Law Program filed a civil rights complaint against those four companies. The AIDS Institute found a similar pattern in the 2014 plans. Representatives of insurance companies charged that the cost of these drugs presented a barrier. Other insurance companies, however, reacted to the high cost of HIV medications in different ways. Representatives also claimed that selling directly to customers was a new business practice. Ruppal, however, pointed out that drug pricing forms a core business practice for insurers, “Drug pricing is between the drug manufacturer and the insurance companies. It’s not the patient’s responsibility.”

10

Two companies Cigna and Preferred Medical Plan signed consent agreements with Florida Insurance Regulators to resolve this issue. On March 27, 2015, AETNA announced that effective June 1, 2015, it would move HIV meds to lower cost tiers. The AIDS Institute is conducting a brief survey about the integration of the ACA with RWC. The South has the highest death rates of people living with HIV...

The HIV epidemic in the U.S. South has worse HIV outcomes than the rest of the U.S. David Poole of AHF and Jeff Graham of Georgia Equality spoke about the lack of leadership in integrating ACA with Ryan White Care. Poole said that the integration of the ACA and RWC had managed to “paralyze the Health Resources and Services Administration”. This became problematic in Southern states with varying degrees of hostility to the ACA. For example, according to Graham, the Georgia legislature passed laws forbidding state employees to engage in activities that supported the ACA. The HIV epidemic in the U.S. South has worse HIV outcomes than the rest of the U.S. Poole described the situation as urgent with some people dropping out of care. “The urgency is people’s lives are at stake right now and we need a stronger federal response.” Graham echoed that sentiment, urging the federal government to sue the states.

...and those living in large urban areas are infected at a much higher rate.

The ADAP Advocacy Association, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), and Community Access National Network sponsored this event. The Eighth Annual National Summit will occur on September 24, 2015 in Washington DC. (This is the first of a two part series on this summit, next mandated mail order pharmacies and the re-authorization of Ryan White Care.) soflagaynews //

Almost twenty years later, Judy and Dennis Shepard continue to advocate for social justice. Judy penned a memoir in 2009, titled “The Meaning of Matthew,” and she travels the country to raise awareness for the prevention of hate crimes. The same year she published her memoir, U.S. President Obama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. In an interview with SFGN, Judy Shepard acknowledged how times have changed since her son lost his life. “People are really changing today,” Judy said. “Colleges are filled with students who live with conviction instead of fear.” Featured performer for the Hard Rock soiree is New York cabaret singer Joey Arias. A heralded performance artist for more than 30 years on the New York music and club scene, Arias is scheduled to take the stage at 7 p.m., May 9. The New York Daily News has proclaimed Arias as a “…romantic, postmodern, transgender wonder.” Arias will be accompanied by a special performance from Cirque Dreams. Tickets for “Diversity Honors” are $150 per person, which includes a seated dinner and cocktails. Black tie is optional and valet parking is available. On Monday, the Harvey Milk Foundation is joining with The Center in Orlando for a “Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast” honoring Central Florida leaders of equality and justice at the Orlando Museum of Art. The breakfast, featuring Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Circuit Court Judge Bob LeBlanc, begins at 8 a.m., May 11. Tickets are $45. For more information, visit www.TheCenterOrlando.org

At a time when the South Florida LGBT community is arguably conflicted over issues of age discrimination, HIV prevention methods and political activism, the Harvey Milk Foundation and Pride Center at Equality Park seek to cool controversies with an inaugural “Diversity Honors” ceremony Saturday evening at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood. Stuart Milk, co-founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation, is the event’s presenter. Milk, a global human rights advocate, is expected to deliver an important speech concerning the need for more education, greater acceptance and advocacy for equal rights. In a press release, organizers of “Diversity Honors” state the event’s mission is a collaborative celebration of the achievements of those who have a transformational effect on others by promoting inclusion and acceptance. Those being celebrated include Judy and Dennis Shepard, parents of slain gay Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard; recording artist Deborah Cox, Palm Beach County Human Rights Council Founder Rand Hoch, teenage transgender activist Jazz Jennings, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge William Thomas, Planned Parenthood CEO Lillian Tamayo, Entertainer Elaine Lancaster and Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Dean Trantalis. The Shepards’ son, Matthew, was brutally murdered outside of Laramie, Wyoming in the autumn of 1998. The young man’s death sparked outrage from the community at-large when news spread of his savage beating by two men. The criminals tied Shepard to a fence and bludgeoned him. Shepard died a few days later at a Colorado Springs hospital. He was 21.

In its ninth year, SAVE is honoring equality advocates who made a difference in the community in 2014 with its annual event, Champions of Equality. The fête takes place on May 8 at Briza on the Bay, a gorgeous waterfront property, with music by DJ Maximus 3000 and plenty of dancing and drinks to boot. This year, SAVE (formerly SAVE Dade) is honoring Arianna Lint, transgender services director at SunServe, Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, transgender advocate, and Dr. Mark B. Rosenberg, president at Florida International University. “I’m proud Translatin@,” Lint told SFGN in an email. “It is very rewarding to be transgender and having the opportunity to give back to my community. This is the moment for the transgender movement.” Rosenberg has participated in the Miami Beach Pride Parade for two years now and his school made headlines when it created gender-neutral bathrooms in six locations around campus. Also, the university has LGBTQA mentoring programs, a full-time LGBTQA initiatives staffer, and offers a queer studies certificate. A special presentation will also be made by Florida Congresswoman Ileana RosLehtinen. Heng-Lehtinen is the donor services coordinator at GLAAD and

transgender son of the congresswoman, a Republican leader who has been outspoken in her support of the LGBT community. “We know Rigo as our child, whether it’s Amanda or now as Rodrigo, he’s our son, we’re proud of him,” Ros-Lehtinen said in an interview with CBS Miami. Point Foundation Fundraiser for LGBTQ Youth Leadership Jillian Melero

At the New York Public Library. Point Foundation Facebook.

The Point Foundation, the country’s largest scholarship organization for LGBT leaders, is holding a fundraiser Saturday May 9 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Miami Shores Country Club. Tickets are $75 and include a cocktail brunch. Guests will learn more about Point’s scholarships, leadership development and mentoring programs for LGBT youth. Point has dedicated $18 million in resources and support to LGBT Point scholars of merit over the last 14 years. Averaging $10,000 per scholarship, at more than 20 scholars per year. Scholars are selected based upon a set of criteria including academic performance, demonstrated leadership, involvement in the LGBT community and desire to make a difference. Last year, Point awarded scholarships to 23 recipients around the country out of more than 2,000 applicants. Among them was FSU student, Frederick Adenuga. Adenuga will be one of the Point scholars at Saturday’s fundraiser. Adenuga recently graduated with a triple major in Political Science, Entrepreneurship, and Sales while earning his Master’s in Public Administration. He was the first openly gay member of FSU’s Greek Inter-fraternity Council, leading a majority of campus fraternities to openly recruit gay members. He also led an initiative to install gender neutral bathrooms across campus.

Besides the financial support students receive, Point’s LGBT youth programs focus on mentoring, leadership development and community service, helping scholars build skills to develop and organize these projects. Adenuga’s community service project is “Outside: Point Scholars.” He says the idea stems from the “It Gets Better” campaign in 2010. “An outlet similar to the TED conference where ideas and stories could be presented that stimulate conversation and change.” For the past two years, Adenuga has hosted “Outside: Florida State” at FSU, a forum where students and professors discussed their challenges and lessons as out members of the community. He plans to further this project, actively recruiting new guest speakers at Point’s Scholar and Alumni Leadership Conference. Communications and Marketing Director for Point, Eugene Patron, says that beyond the funding much of the benefit to scholars comes from the relationships they build within the programs. Patron says that for many, it is the first time they are among openly LGBT peers as grad students and young professionals, or with mentors to offer them academic and career guidance. “For a lot of these kids, it’s the first time they see, ‘I have a future, I’m not alone.’ And it’s really about getting that vote of confidence in you.”

BeachBear Weekend Rolls into Greater Fort Lauderdale John McDonald

‘FIRST COMES LOV PHOTO FEATURE

Thousands of men celebrating what is often referred to as a brotherhood are migrating to Fort Lauderdale this weekend for BeachBear Weekend 2015. The Courtyard By Marriott Fort Lauderdale Beach is the host hotel for this event and hotel spokesman Steve Zunt said the property is glad to welcome bears from near and far. “We are very excited with all of the interest this event has generated,” Zunt said. “This is our fourth year hosting the event and it has more than doubled from last year. We look forward to welcoming our guests from the United States and overseas.” Activities and social gatherings for bears -universally known as large, hairy, masculine men -- are scheduled at various bars and guest houses across Fort Lauderdale and

Wilton Manors this weekend. SFGN reached out to BeachBear Weekend event producer Bob Young for comment, but our repeated requests for an interview were denied. “I’m really not interested in doing an article — thanks anyway,” Young’s last email read. Zunt, however, did confirm a bear themed business fair is scheduled to open at 2 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (May 7-9) inside the Seabreeze conference room at the Courtyard By Marriott Fort Lauderdale Beach, 440 Seabreeze Blvd., Fort Lauderdale Beach, 33316. Proceeds from BeachBear Weekend 2015 benefit the Pride Center at Equality Park and Abandoned Pet Rescue. Organizers of this year’s BBW have dedicated the event to departed buddy Chris Miklos.

guest column Let’s Love Bruce Jenner and All Our Transgender Brothers and Sisters The Same Steve Siebold

At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, U.S. track and field athlete Bruce Jenner made headlines for winning the gold medal in the decathlon and became an instant American celebrity. And now, after the long awaited admission recently on national television where Jenner said he is now a woman, it’s time to recognize Jenner as an American hero yet again. The numbers are shocking: A whopping 41 percent of people who are transgender or gender-nonconforming have attempted suicide sometime in their lives, according to the results of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey. No one should ever contemplate taking their own life simply because they feel trapped in their own body and believe they were destined to be someone else. To these men and women, Bruce Jenner is a hero. Jenner is now an outspoken voice that sends the message of, “You’re not alone,” and “It’s ok to be who you truly are.” The reality is that some people never get comfortable in their own skin and silently suffer a life of unintentional inauthenticity. They live every day with the guilt and shame our culture stamps on everyone who makes their minority positions public. While many psychologists, psychiatrists and religious leaders want to use techniques to "fix" these people, the truth is they were never broken. When people have plastic surgery to improve their appearance, do we stigmatize them and claim they have a psychological disorder? The delusion is that transgender people are suffering from a psychological disorder or they have chosen to feel the way they do. This is absurd. The good news is that celebrities like Bruce Jenner and Chaz Bono, for example, have the platform and

ambition to educate Americans. Some religious leaders have spoken out and claimed that being transgender is a sin because it disregards God-given gender distinctions and provides for and promotes homosexuality. They also claim that it dishonors marriage and the home as ordained by God. This is yet another example of how religious leaders in America use their power to control the faithful through guilt and shame. Whether it's being bullied in school by students and teachers or being labeled a sinner by the church, it's time for Americans to grow up and start treating people the way they wish to be treated. Would Jesus, or any other serious leader, condone the behavior of bullies and bigots? How many people have to kill themselves before we finally realize we are all equal regardless of color, creed or sexual orientation? If America is really the beacon of hope that we claim it is, shouldn't that include acceptance and support for people struggling to navigate the trials and tribulations of life? Critical thinking says it's time to reject the religious dogma and societal brainwashing and open our hearts to people of every kind. Isn't life tough enough without our most cherished institutions attacking us for being different? When will the day come when we are all accepted for who we are? Until that day, America will continue to be a second-rate country when it comes to these important social issues. To every transgender person, please know that you are loved. Remember that you are as good as everyone else, and the critics are attacking you out of fear and ignorance. It has nothing to do with you. Stay Tough!

impulse: A Modern Group for a Digital World

Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com A collection of marketing materials from a recent Impulse event.

Two of Impulse's marketing cards they created to educate men 18-35 about HIV.

The duty of a newspaper is to print not only the wins and victories of its community, but the warts and the wounds. SFGN has kept true to that promise, and whether you are an activist or advertiser, we stand by our commitment to printing newsworthy stories. In the past few weeks, the Impulse Group of South Florida captured the attention of SFGN. By holding a pool party and charging a fee for those only over 40, they stirred a hornet’s nest of controversy. SFGN covered the story in detail the last two weeks, and each of the stories was picked up by national LGBT daily websites, including Qweerty.com, Advocate. com, and Instinct.com. Unfortunately, our stories, duty-bound though we were to publish them, brought attention not to Impulse’s emerging successes, but rather the acrimony generated by the ‘ageism’ controversy. Prior to these stories, Impulse pretty much went under the radar. Even in SFGN, we had only done a few stories about some of their event-specific functions. We had not done a feature on their origin and growth, their methods and their mission. That’s too bad, because their innovation deserved acknowledgement and acclaim. Last week, I expressed my view on the Impulse parties and price structure. I support them, but I understand how that has antagonized so many good people who have fought for so long to end all discrimination even within the LGBT community. I unapologetically stand by my opinion. The motivation and purposes of Impulse are noble, worthy of celebration, not censure. This week, therefore, I want to share with you more about the group and its aspirations. In my mind, they are one of the

most progressive and ingenious outreach groups ever developed to bring young people within the paradigm of HIV care. With infections rising amongst young people, boy, do we ever need to do that. First of all, Impulse is a grassroots movement that started in Los Angeles. A group of friends saw a need in the community for more awareness and education around safer-sex and staying healthy. With the support of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Impulse was given an unprecedented platform to accomplish their goals. Less than two years later, quietly, without enormous publicity, just dedication, sweat and perseverance, the all-volunteer group is emerging with branches around the world, making a huge impact with youthful populations typically not receptive to HIV driven awareness programs. A tour of their website at impulsegrp.org will reveal not only their innovative tact, but their global reach, with chapters in New Delhi and Mexico City, along with Los Angeles, San Diego, Dallas, Orlando, New York,

Atlanta and South Florida. This week, buoyed by the help of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Jose Ramos, the group’s founder, and local president A.J. Alegria, the group is attempting to start a chapter in Beijing. How can you not appreciate the energy and effort, the outreach and the commitment? The Impulse website is aesthetic and modern, featuring compelling HIV awareness videos, personal interviews, riveting graphics, and exciting designs. My favorite one is ‘#hateishate/Expose the Truth’. Another poignant poster was “Assume and risk, ask the hard questions.” I asked myself one. Where the hell was SFGN on this story? Why haven’t we covered this more in depth earlier? If we tried, it wasn’t hard enough. Each Impulse chapter hosts its own events, with activities designed to promote a healthier sexual lifestyle as part of a more sexy, informed community. Years ago, there were activist PWA coalitions marching in streets to draw attention to the need for our government to fund research for HIV treatment. Today, we need to encourage prevention and caution, as much as care and treatment. In Dallas, a February Impulse event was tied into National Condom Awareness Day, and just before Valentine’s Day. The idea is that you can make love without necessary giving your partner a killer disease. On March 26, the Impulse South Florida group hosted a photographic exhibition in the heart of the Wynwood Art District, showcasing the work of Adrian Vargas. The auction raised $1,500 to help promote their 2015 marketing mission.

I unapologetically stand by my opinion. The motivation and purposes of Impulse are noble, worthy of celebration, not censure.

column letters to the editor

Readers Speak Out About Impulse Group Over the last two weeks SFGN has published two news articles and one op-ed about Impulse Group South Florida's decision to charge folks over 40 a $50 fee to attend their recent pool party, while letting those under 40 in for free. The HIV education and prevention group has received a severe backlash in response. Here's what you had to say in response to our coverage. Visit SFGN.com/Impulse to read all of our recent coverage.

Impulse Should Be Apologetic… #Fail Justin Wyse

Bear Night – Smooth Guys Extra I have always stood by the community to promote a healthy lifestyle and taking care of yourself and most importantly knowing your status. The recent scandal if you will with Impulse Group of South Florida for me is not really the important issue (to fix this scandal just limit the patrons to your age demographic and nobody else would care.) Their mission is supposedly to educate and help men under the age of 35 learn how to have safe sex or at least make better choices. Problem number one with their mission: how in the hell does having a pool party with half naked men running around and free booze provide a safe place to talk about AIDS? How is this behavior promoting change? Problem number two: bowls of condoms on tables is not marketing it’s something we see all over the community. When I looked at the photos posted by Impulse Group on their Facebook page I only noticed they had a huge poster with a hash tag on it, a step and repeat, full bar, lots of merchandise with the Impulse brand on it (blankets, beach balls etc…) Problem three: no signs stating Get Tested Today or anything to that affect. The group has since claimed that 20 people got tested out of 300 attendees. Way to go if you consider 7% tested a successful outcome. Let’s talk about marketing 101 as Norm Kent calls it. When placing print marketing

20

// 5.6.2015 // SFGN.com //

materials throughout the tri-county area you should inform people of what your ad is and what it’s for. Impulse failed on this with SFGN and Hotspots. They chose to do no further marketing to explain their event to the readers. The other point I would like to make on this subject is who is running the show that can’t even address the community and say “sorry we made a mistake and have learned from it”? This would have stopped the hateful messages and probably kept the community pretty quiet. Place ads that inform, educate and promote your message. Life isn’t all just a party. The real questions many of us want to know and I saw throughout Facebook is this; what is your real goal of this group? It looks too many of us that it’s a great way to party and enjoy yourselves at the expense of AHF. You show up to events and drink and many get drunk. How is this the face of an organization you want people to take seriously and support? I would love to know why you would post an apology letter but then a few minutes later tell people you’re unapologetic in a photo campaign? Impulse we want answers, we deserve answers. We want to stand by you, but you won’t let us. Do something classy for a change to promote change. Right now you have FAILED our community!

soflagaynews //

The great thing about holding events that target a specific audience is that it aims at reaching a specific audience, but it does not exclude or discriminate. The $150 plate dinner you mentioned is a flat fee. There are well to do 20 to 40 year olds and not well off 40+ individuals in our community. The dinner is not discriminatory. What makes up a target? Rings. Sure, shoot for the bulls eye, but don't stop there. Our community programs should assist all they can. To take your argument and apply it to other educational and testing resources, should we just have mobile testing centers for certain ages? We'll park the one just for 18 to 29 year olds in front of the Manor, 30 to 49 in front of Village Pub with a charge, and 50+, well we'll be in the Tropics parking lot collecting a fee double that of others. That's fair marketing, education, and testing, right? But no, maybe we need to not allow people 40+ to get tested in mobile centers since they must have adequate health care and can afford it. They can go elsewhere. Those older individuals are utilizing resources and time that are needed for other people in our community. "25 percent of all new infections occur between the ages of 13 and 24. Ages 24 to 35 are not much better." I am sure those individuals are

SouthFloridaGayNews

only having sex with people within their age brackets and never with older men that don't know their status. Throw your parties, market to your specified age group, but don't exclude or charge others out of your target market. Imagine Hunters, Alibi, and other Wilton Manors bars charging all smooth guys on Bear Nights. I agree, Impulse does throw a great party and plans well. Come to think of it, I attended one of their parties during Gay Days Fort Lauderdale. There were 5 of us that went, 4 of us over 40. Now I feel pretty stupid for stepping foot into a venue that I was not welcome in. At Fort Lauderdale Pride, Impulse had one of the loudest and busiest booths on the street. It was great to see the energy and enthusiasm and what they were doing, trying to reach out to a targeted audience, was fantastic and should be celebrated. But the tactics run the risk of us becoming backwards, exclusionary, and disrespectful. "You reach ... more [people] with fun than with fear?" They always say you catch more flies with honey. Well, we all know that you catch more flies with sh*t. And we can always agree to disagree.

— Adam Dupuis

column letters to the editor

Sounds Like A Failure Photos: Impulse Group.

Exactly What Was Reported

I'm from out of state and have noticed a couple articles about this event and the only thing I actually know about it is that they discriminated against people over 40. Maybe you agree with the philosophy and maybe you don't, but from a purely PR perspective it sure sounds like a failure. In any case in a community where there can be a lot of pressure and anxiety regarding getting older, a policy like this stings even more.

— Matt Pizzuti

No Brainer I very seldom write letters such as this, but I read the article about Impulse last evening, and I have to tell you that the underlying purpose of that organization's intent is exactly what was reported. I have seldom been so outraged, but the blatant age discrimination and the lame defense of the policy is beyond belief. The one telling sentence to me is that which refers to what the younger generation owes to those of us who worked so hard for our rights in the past. I worked with Frank Kameny in the the 60's and 70's while living in Washington, D.C., with little praise, and little cooperation from almost everyone. Those efforts that we made paved the

way for all of us, and have paid off. Frankly, I never really believed that we would have come this far in my lifetime. This kind of policy that you reported is an unforgivable slap in the face to all of us. Thank goodness you and Norm take no prisoners when it is appropriate to do so -- and, to assuage my feelings, I will remember something my late friend, Elizabeth Taylor, used to say ---- "Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and pull yourself together." Life will go on. Thanks for reading --

— C.M. Bryant

This is really a no-brainer! Let me try to put it in terms that you can understand — separate is never equal! If you're feeling this is a community event-where do you get off charging one segment of the community more than others? This was not a private party! It was a fundraiser in a community event. Hypothetically speaking, if lesbians decided to attend do you charge them more than men? Do you even let them in at all? What about men of color? Do you charge them more or charge them less? If I showed up and told you I was 35-- do you "card me?" If so, what is your reason? We care about stuff like this because our community is in a pitched legal battle all over America fighting for "equality" then our own community pulls a stunt like this! financial consequences because of its "license to discriminate" laws--two very affluent Hotel moguls in New York are being boycotted by OUR community because the had a dinner party with Texas Bigot Ted Cruz-- yet you go and pull a stunt like this! Shame on you! Yes, all your events in the future should be boycotted! Yes, you should be publically shamed-- you cannot justify your actions with this simply because it was a "fund raiser"-- no, this event should be considered "off limits" in the future-- it sends a loud message we as a community hold ourselves accountable in the eyes of America and we wont tolerate this from our own-/separate is never equal-- and "age tax" is wrong and that’s what you did.

column letters to the editor Continued

Thanks But No Thanks

Thank you Norm for all of your past work in the local community. It takes courage to be out front on some of the controversial issues facing our community. However, your final paragraph is an insult to anyone over 40. You say: “You older folks, just settle down. You can get your senior discounts at the movie theater and bagel shops, but Impulse ought to be able to freely create their own agenda without you getting on their case.” Since when do people become seniors at age 40? No one asks for a senior discount to a fundraiser. Your comment is dismissive and demeaning. And it diminishes the accomplishments that you referenced in your op ed. No one has said that Impulse must adapt their agenda to anything other than what they do BUT they need to be much more explicit about that agenda. Here’s what their website description says today: The South Florida Chapter of an International Organization dedicated to the advancement of HIV/AIDS education and prevention in gay men 18-35. A non-profit organization that focuses on the sexual and overall health of the gay community in South Florida (Palm Beach, Broward, & Miami-Dade Counties). We are an organization dedicated to education about HIV, whose rates continue to rise in our demographic group in our geographic location, despite falling in other demographic groups. Impulse encourages HIV prevention by facilitating testing opportunities, providing condoms and other materials for safe or safer sex. Finally, we help promptly link any individuals that test positive with medical care.

// 5.6.2015 // SFGN.com //

As recently as April 22nd (after the party in question) the description mentioned nothing about a specific age range It would seem that the attention drawn by this news story has brought about some changes in the website. Many organizations have multilevel pricing for events based on specific criteria which you made reference to in your commentary. There are discounts available to seniors, students, AAA members, members of the armed forces, etc. with only one exception each of those discounts are based on external criteria which is verifiable and not subjective. While Impulse’s focus is on 18-35 they opted to arbitrarily select 40 as the point at which people needed to pay for admission to the event. Did they include this information on invitations or flyers to the event? Or were they banking on the influx of cash they would receive from the other men who were interested in attending the event. How did they determine who would be charged? Was it based on ‘he looks over 40’ or were they checking the ID for everyone who entered? Unless they were checking ID the process was definitely arbitrary. As regards the black tie event at the Hard Rock Casino, you have been around these circles long enough to know that such events are rarely attended by younger people. Not just in the gay community but in society overall those events are for the wellheeled, affluent folks who like to gather in the name of charity. They have polite conversation about the events of the day and feel good about themselves for making a difference in the world.

Oh Norm! In a single effort to kiss a sponsors ass you have a managed to offend SFGN's readers demographic as well as discredit your newspaper's original article by labeling it as "meritless". You obviously don't know all the comments and responses that were posted by the local gay community and how sensitive this matter is. Inform yourself before trivializing issues with a dumb article like this one.

column letters to the editor

Never Act On Impulse

James Oaksun

of one thing only — my age. There's a clear (even if inadvertent) message in that: We want your money, but we really don't want “You.” When I was in graduate school I took a course in behavioral economics. The professor will likely win the Nobel Prize in the next few years for his work (he is still teaching. I'm not that old). One of his research findings was that people love discounts but hate surcharges, even though in economic terms the result is the same. That's why you see “ladies nights” and “senior discounts.” They “feel” differently than saying “admission is $5, unless you're under 60 in which case it's $10,” for example. There would have been less of a backlash if Impulse had offered a discount instead of a surcharge. And yes, it's still somewhat discriminatory. But as much as I understand “how” it happened, throwing an “open” party, C issuing “open” invitations throughout social media, and then trying to get one select group M to pay for the privilege of attending, is a crummy thing to do. Still, younger men should have their Yown space, their own opportunities to build CM To community within and among themselves. demonstrate and develop leadership skills. And yes, to make mistakes and learn MY from them. So, next time, throw a private party. Ask for CY donations if you like. In closing, there are two larger issues that CMY should not be lost amidst the clamor. First, is this a time when our community K should be dividing deliberately, Balkanizing itself? Perhaps that ship sailed long ago. Yes, judgment is dirty. The last thing we should do is judge each other. Viruses don't discriminate. Second, and more importantly, our collective struggle is not over. Republican presidential candidates, governors and legislatures are eager to enact laws permitting discrimination against us, and trying to disguise it by calling it “religious freedom.” The state House here in Florida, in a party line vote, passed such a bill this past session. We don't need a circular firing squad. We need to stand together, regardless of age. It's time to move on to bigger issues.

After years of attending all of those other weddings...

it is finally time for you to say

Photo: JAG Studios www.jagstudios.net

I have good friends on both sides of this issue. I hope they remain friends when they finish reading my thoughts on this kerfuffle. I'm not 30 any more. Or 40 for that matter. Increasingly I am called the “D” word that I previously believed was reserved exclusively for use by a 21-year-old senior at Emerson College. And you know something? I don't want to be 30 again. (40, maybe.) I might have the health and heart of a 30-year-old, but I know the reality. Even if I still look OK in a Speedo. The men (and women) of my generation lived through a lot. We all still do. We lived through the neglect of a Republican president, and a Democratic Congress, who didn't want to talk about (or even hear about) an untreatable illness that was cutting people down like a buzz saw, before they had a chance to have a “prime time.” We saw a Democratic president and Congress enact legislation that said we could only serve in the Armed Forces if we didn't tell anybody who we really were. We saw a Democratic president run reelection ads touting his “defense” of marriage. We saw the Republican Party as an institution become devoted to hating us. And we made it through. It wasn't easy, you know. It still isn't. The gains we have achieved were not just handed to us. We had to fight for them, and take them. Look, I know where I'm welcome and where I'm not. I am very sensitive to the notion that some younger men might think, “Ewwww, creepy old guy doesn't wanna play with guys his own age.” Perhaps, as the saying goes, what others think of you is none of your business. But I am aware... Which brings me to the matter at hand. Throwing a party that's free *except* if you're over 40 is blatantly discriminatory. Perhaps it was discriminatory “for good reason.” Impulse is trying to carry a message to a highly at-risk group. They have a perfect right to imagine and execute events that target that group. But the way they did it was wrong. And I am not surprised at the backlash. Quite frankly I received an invitation to this party on Facebook, and fully intended to go. I have friends associated with the group and I think their cause is highly worthy. Then I saw I had to pay $50 to attend, because

Marriage Equality and the 2016 elections (Part 1) Jesse Monteagudo

On November 2, 2004, George W. Bush was re-elected President of the U.S. and voters in 11 states approved constitutional amendments that banned same-sex marriage. Many pundits believed that the ballot measures helped Bush, who during the campaign spoke in support of a U.S. constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Bush’s support for a marriage ban helped him in Ohio, which carried him over the top. Karl Rove, Bush’s political adviser, told the New York Times that there was “a broad consensus” against same-sex marriage, which helped pass anti-gay amendments in 11 states “by considerable margins.... People do not like the idea or the concept of marriage as being a union between a man and a woman being uprooted and overturned by a few activist judges or a couple of activist local officials.” “It was these value voters who ushered the president down the aisle for a second term,” crowed Tony Perkins, president of the religious right Family Research Council (FRC). More than a decade later, Karl Rove’s “consensus” on same-sex marriage seems to have shifted to the other direction. Barack Obama was elected President in 2008 while he was still “evolving” on the issue and re-elected in 2012 after he made his support for marriage equality quite clear. The Democratic Party is firmly united in support of same-sex marriage rights, as is that party’s leading presidential candidate, Hillary Rodham Clinton. The Republicans, however, are in a quagmire. On the one hand, they realize that most Americans now support marriage equality. On the other hand, they do not want to alienate their base, mostly religious conservatives whose views have not changed since 2004. Texas Senator Ted Cruz, the first Republican to declare his candidacy for President of the United States, has no doubts. On April 9 Cruz appeared before a presidential candidate forum in Iowa and expressed his support for “religious freedom” laws that allow businesses to discriminate against LGBT people and others who offend their faith. Cruz warned that a “jihad is being waged

right now in Indiana and Arkansas, going after people of faith who respect the biblical teaching that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. ... We need to bring people together,” Cruz said, reminding his audience of the days when there was a bipartisan consensus in favor of “religious liberty” and against “gay marriage.” “This election needs to be about bringing together that consensus again, and that’s got to come from the people.” I don’t blame the GOP for being bewildered. In 2004 marriage inequality was a sure road to victory. A decade later, according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, 59 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage. Even so, most GOP primary voters agree with Senator Cruz. “Any presidential candidate seeking the Republican Party nomination in 2016 has to be very careful not to poke a stick in the eye of that base vote in any state,” said Gary Marx, executive director of the Faith and Freedom Council. Meanwhile, the FRC’s Perkins, who was the cock of the walk right after the 2004 elections, now warns that if the Republican Party “abandons marriage, evangelicals will either sit the elections out completely - or move to create a third party. ... Either opinion puts Republicans on the path to a permanent minority.” Not surprisingly, GOP hopefuls Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal and Marco Rubio, like Cruz, have toed the FRC party line. Even Kentucky’s “moderate” Senator Rand Paul said that same-sex couples should not describe their relationship as a “marriage,” because it “offends myself and a lot of people.” He and the equally “moderate” Jeb Bush firmly support “religious freedom” laws. There may be many reasons for an LGBT person to vote Republican in 2016, but LGBT rights is not one of them. While the rest of us have moved on, GOP candidates remain stranded in 2004. While that might help them in their primaries, it will do them no good in November of 2016.

Gazette Looking Beyond Wilton Manors

Our Borders…

Editorial

We love to embrace the phase, “Wilton Manors — the Island City. Being an island defines us, creates the space we call our city, gives us a physical border, and offers us a psychological uniqueness we enjoy. Unfortunately, this Island concept offers us the belief that somehow we can close out the outside world, pull up the bridges, man the streets with our own police force, and hold off the forces of change at the gates. Many of the problems and topics of discussion heard around town at meetings and local gatherings serve as a sharp reminder that, in the words of the poet John Dunne, “No man is an island, Entire of itself, Every man is a piece of the continent, A part of the main ….” We here in the Island City must look across the waterways and engage so to create the changes we want to see here at home and throughout Broward County. Homelessness, revolving doors for repeat convicted criminals, youth joblessness, less than average schools, failing infrastructure, and a lack of vision to move our communities into the future are some of the topics I hear discussed throughout our Island City. These are problems that affect our lives within our borders on a daily basis, from robberies in our residential neighborhoods, homelessness along Andrews Avenue and Oakland Park Blvd, panhandlers at intersections, solicitations by prostitutes at the Central Shopping Center, and much more. Residents demand action from their local officials, their Police Department, Code Enforcement, and city staff. Unfortunately, this is where their actions usually stop, and those being contacted have the least amount of effectiveness to deal with the problems perhaps other than to take shortterm, ineffective action such as placing a finger in a leaking hole of a dam that is about to burst. Most residents know Mayor Resnick and our four other City Commissioners. They also know our Chief of Police, local officers, City Manager Joe Gallegos, and others who make up our very dedicated city staff. BUT, looking beyond our borders, how many of us know who our County Commissioner, our Representatives serving in the Florida House, our State Senators? Who are those in our county

government who can be held accountable for the regional issues that are affecting all cities in Broward County? We very rarely hear from any of these county and regional elected officials until election time comes around. Some are doing a fantastic job against great odds, but all of them need to hear from their constituents to be reminded of what needs to be done in our local communities. How was your recent experience with the new countywide 911 system? Why is the criminal responsible for numerous burglaries back out on the street after just being arrested? What is being done countywide to address the homeless problem plaguing our communities? I know a lot of us have asked these questions locally, but have failed to ask them of our County Commissioner Tim Ryan. How about asking our State House Representatives Bobby Dubois and George Moraitis or our State Senators Chris Smith and Maria Sachs about state programs and funding available to address these issues? If we don’t communicate our concerns to the proper officials, we cannot reasonably expect solutions. In the coming months, as President of the Westside Association of Wilton Manors, I will be contacting the other neighborhood associations to discuss how we can work together to better communicate our city’s concerns to our regional elected officials, invite officials to our meetings, and create a forum between residents and these officials so that very important concerns and issues can be addressed. Meanwhile, I urge all residents to contact their regional officials and let them know our concerns, let them hear from their constituents! We do not always need to complain, we should also let our officials know when they are doing a good job. We thanked Commissioner Ryan for his actions in moving the Como Apartment Project on Powerline to completion and his recent interest in Mickel Park. We thank our State Senator Maria Sachs, who has always demonstrated great interest in our city and our diversity as a community. WMG

The Goals and Objectives Workshop begins at 6:30 pm on April 7. Meetings are held in the Commission Chambers at City Hall, and all are welcome to attend. Parking is free during all city meetings.

Real Estate Geek

How to Identify Emerging Neighborhoods By James Oaksun In my last column I started to describe my criteria for finding good values in South Florida real estate. • First I strongly suggested Broward County as the prime place to seek value, far more so than MiamiDade County. (While there are parts of Palm Beach County that have potential, I think the potential in Broward is greater.) • Second I suggested that areas relatively near the ocean (but not too close) would be best bets for above average appreciation in the future. In this column I will describe my three additional criteria. Yes to some degree it is one man's opinion. However, it has basis in experience – not just my own experience and knowledge of the South Florida market, but also through extremely detailed statistical analysis of both our market here and other markets throughout the US. Criterion 3: Some Degree of Walkability/”Neighborhoodiness” Walk down Wilton Drive from the Dairy Queen to Five Points sometime. It is abundantly clear that the development of Wilton Manors as a community (and concomitant appreciation in property values) was driven in considerable part by having a core central district that could be a destination for both residents and visitors. There are other such locations in Broward County, but they are few. It's not too hard to identify them really. Look at Google Maps in a zoomed setting. Or, to be more scientific, look up an index of walkability, like a WalkScore.

Another means of getting some prospects would be to locate the “community redevelopment” areas that most Broward cities have designated. Some of them are percolating; some are not. You do have to put in some effort, and work with advisers who know the ground level realities. A good Realtor will do a lot more for you than open the garage door and mention the stainless steel appliances, after all. Criterion 4: Where is Whole Foods? Some people love Whole Foods; some hate them; some love to hate them. But I have found that in so many cases, one should take what they like and leave the rest. Actually Whole Foods is a good analogue to the real estate market here. You can spend a lot of money on something worth it; you can spend a lot on something overpriced; you can spend a moderate amount on something that is merely OK; or you can spend a moderate amount on something that in the long run will be very good for you. Learn what you can from Whole Foods! Say what you will, but they are a very successful company. They won't invest the time/effort/capital in a store opening that they don't believe will pay off for them. Consequently they will site their stores where there is (or will soon be) a demographic that has the money to spend there. Certainly some of the nearby areas will have already seen the appreciation in valuations. Some will not have experienced it – Yet. Criterion 5: A Nearby Institution of Higher Learning This is something often overlooked but that turns out to be a very good indicator of potential appreciation. Increasingly colleges and universities are not just for the 18-25 crowd. Rather, they are becoming centers of lifelong learning, with people taking courses and pursuing degrees for new careers, or just because. In addition institutions of higher learning offer events – symposia, lectures, concerts – of interest to an audience beyond the student body. Finally, having a nearby university can make for an attractive location

City of Wilton Manors. Facebook.

for a business incubator or for various start-up operations. And when you have that level of interest developing in a specific location, the real estate values will eventually follow, if they have not done so already. Having UM in Coral Gables, for example, is among many benefits of that community. In my next column I will name some names. I'll put it all together for you and tell you some places to start digging for gems-to-be. WMG James Oaksun, Broward's Real Estate GeekSM, is a Realtor with the Wilton Manors office of RE/ MAX Preferred. In addition to having degrees from Dartmouth and Cornell, he is a graduate of the Realtors Institute (GRI).

Opinion

There Goes The Gayborhood By Pier Angelo

Back in September, The Islander, a monthly publication covering Wilton Manors, published an anti-gay letter from a “concerned” citizen. The 45-year resident complained about the rampant vulgarity along Wilton Drive. This person felt that heterosexuals were marginalized in the Island City and objected to some of the names of the establishments along the drive. In other words Wilton Manors has become too gay. He went on with his rant by saying: “It's one thing to want equality it's another to try to steamroller your hunger for dominance over a city at the cost of those families who still want to live a nonsexualized, suburban family lifestyle.” What happened to Wilton Manors was a miraculous makeover that in the future will be very hard to replicate. And the angry hetero might one day regret it. Until about 2005 the only place gay people could meet was in gay venues. Not anymore. The gayborhoods’ popularity peaked at the end of the 90s, when gays still faced significant harassment and discrimination. All over the nation technological advances, changing lifestyles, social acceptance, are forcing gay villages to reinvent themselves, with local businesses having to face the reality that homosexuals feel increasingly comfortable in different corners of most cities. Gays no longer look only to the “ghetto” to live, shop and party. Thanks to mobile dating apps young homosexuals are eschewing bars and clubs as places to find partners. Nowadays gay villages across North America have become victims of their own success and of society's increased tolerance. New York's Greenwich Village, historically an affordable gay and bohemian Mecca, features some of the most expensive real estate in America. Gays began exiting South Beach several years ago after it started turning itself into Corporate America. Same thing has happened to Key West: guesthouses advertise as “straight friendly,” bars and clubs have vanished; gays have sold their homes and moved north. Alas, they are no longer settling in specific gay areas. They are not looking for depressed areas in need of a makeover. Greater Fort Lauderdale, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach even Boca Raton, are all considered good places to live. For the time being Wilton Manors will remain predominantly gay but in the near future it will need to attract a greater variety of people to live and work in the area. Entrepreneurs will have to invest in more than bars or

clubs. "Gays, like straights, want good food, good stores and a vibrant atmosphere. It doesn't need to be too gay, people don't need that anymore. Even in the bars, it's a non issue if there is a 50/50 mix. Most heteros no longer feel uncomfortable mingling and socializing with homos. It is a big shift from the days of old.ww Is this good? My personal conclusion is that homosexuals have opted for a respectable accommodation with heterosexual society. We have been co-opted by the very forces which suppressed us. Gays and lesbians want to get married, to have children, to be absorbed, and they want to mirror their breeders’ counterparts. We are “Disney-fying” ourselves. Then what? We will probably one day find out that the straight world won’t let us forget we are not always invited to the table as equals or full partners. I wouldn’t wait up for a membership card into straight society. It may never come, and you probably should not want it. WMG

Non-profits, Churches Will Have to Start Paying for Fire Services

Business

City moves to charge them 20 percent

By Michael d’Oliveira Commissioner Justin Flippen had hoped to keep Wilton Manors from being the third city in Broward to start charging churches and non-profits fire assessment fees. But, with Flippen being the only one to vote no, the rest of the commission decided to start charging those organizations 20 percent of the fire assessment fees assessed to them for 2015-2016. Fire assessment fees are levied on residents and businesses as a way to pay for fire and EMS services. The larger the facility, the more money the organization has to pay. But, until now, churches and non-profits have been exempted from having to pay. In 2013-2014, the city picked-up the tab for a total cost of about $67,000. Next year, 2015-2016, those organizations will have to contribute a total about $13,000. A second and final vote on the increase will probably be held in July during a budget meeting. “I don’t know if this is the right direction. Do we want to be the third [city to do this?]” asked Flippen, who said charging non-profit organizations and churches sent

the wrong message. The other two Broward cities that charge non-profits for fire fees are Lauderdale Lakes and Southwest Ranches. Commissioner Tom Green made a motion that the city only charge 10 percent, but only Flippen voted in support. After that, the commission approved the 20 percent increase. In defense of the raise, other commissioners also cited the message sent to the public. Mayor Gary Resnick said organizations, even non-profits, who benefit from fire services should pay something for the service and that charging them would “send a message to residents” that everyone is paying their fair share. Commissioner Julie Carson said the city appreciates the work done by churches and non-profits but that the cost of fire services should be “dispersed appropriately.” At least one resident said the percentage should be higher though. “I think 20 percent is a joke,” said Kate Donohue who proposed charging 50 percent now and 100 percent next year.

5 soflagaynews • May 6, 2015//

Paul Alfieri, who spoke on behalf of Calvary Chapel, which recently absorbed Northstar Church into its congregation, said money charged to his organization would not be spent on the charitable programs it funds. “We’re here to support the community,” said Alfieri. Next year, Calvary will have to contribute about $867 for its fire assessment. Donohue, who said she paid $169.80 in fire fees last year, pointed out that many homeowners spend hours volunteering on behalf of the city and don’t get a break on their fire assessment. “Why are they any different than the rest of us?” she asked. “Everyone needs to pay. It’s not much . . . but it goes a long way for our taxpayers,” said Vice Mayor Scott Newton. WMG

Carriage House Fundraiser Successful Historical Society hopes for more

By Michael d’Oliveira

Snack Bar at the Richardson Golf Course, c. 1950's (WMHS)

Sometimes, history has a high price tag. Members of the Wilton Manors Historical Society have known that for a while now, but with their fundraising campaign to restore the Willingham Carriage House, the city’s oldest structure, they’ve encountered their highest price tag yet – and seem to have met it. “You just don’t go to the lumber yard. We need old Dade County Pine wood,” said Paul Kuta, Historical Society treasurer, on the historically-accurate restoration job his organization is trying to complete. Thanks to “Make It Happen Open The Doors,” a matching fundraiser to buy and install doors for the building that are historically consistent with the original design. So far, about $60,000 has been raised, including $5,000 from Antonio Dumas, owner of To the Moon candy shop in Wilton Manors. About $20,000 of that $60,000 was from the matching campaign started by residents Paul Rolli and his partner, Bennett Quade, but the original goal was just to raise $10,000. “They inspired people to give and they’ve gave us the chance to go forward to our citizens again,” said Mary Ulm, president of the Wilton Manors Historical Society. “It will absolutely go to the Carriage House and making the property more enjoyable.” “We’re more than a community. We’re a family. It’s nice to do something,” said Rolli, who also serves as president of the Central Area Neighborhood Association.

Built in 1925 and located in Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve, the Carriage House is believed to be the city’s oldest structure. Originally part of E.J. Willingham’s nursery, the property was sold to George Richardson, Sr., who bought the 40-acre-site in 1938 and turned it into a nine-hole golf course. Later, a large portion of it was developed into what is now the Manor Grove condo complex. In 2007, Richardson Park was opened to the public after it was donated by Richardson’s son, George Richardson, Jr. The ultimate goal is to renovate the building and make it usable for rentals, with all the money generated going to the city, which owns the park and the Carriage House. The money raised will be used to install an air conditioning system, plumbing and electrical work, add an outside bar, build a paved courtyard and add a catererfriendly food prep area The WMHS also hopes to build a covered area on the backside of the building but that will cost an additional $45,000. Are 3-story Condos Too Much?

Residents speak out against proposed development By Michael d’Oliveira

Although still in its initial stages of design, a possible residential development is already drawing criticism from some residents who say it’s too much on too little land. Newberry Homes, an Orlando-based firm, wants to build multiple threestory townhome units on four parcels of land, 0.86-acres in total, on Northeast 21 Court, Northeast 3 Avenue and Northeast 21 Street. If built, it would replace existing single-family homes. “It just really screams what’s wrong with this city and developers that they could even conjure that kind of development,” said resident Michael Rajner at the April 28 commission meeting. He added that parking problems in his neighborhood, the Highlands, already negatively impact the quality of life. He blamed the city for not having adequate parking standards. “I really think the city should probably put a moratorium on new developments until you revise your parking [standards],” Rajner told commissioners. Constance Ruppender, who lives nearby the possible project, said she thinks the developers won’t be able to get the land-use or zoning code change they need to build in an area designated for single-family homes. “It’s a waste of time.” Although mostly in a neighborhood with one-story single-family homes, the development would be located next to existing two-story townhomes. Chad Newberry, vice president and co-founder of Newberry Homes, said he plans to reduce the number of units from

22 to possibly 18 but final plans have not been made yet. The reduction, he said, is because the city has told him he needs to add more guest parking and pervious ground to the site. “It’s still preliminary,” he said. But even if the project is reduced to 18 units it would still be denser than the city’s current densest area, the Highlands, which maxes out at 16 units per acre. Ruppender said the developer “didn’t think it through” and is trying pack as much in as possible just to “make a buck.” She also criticized Newberry’s efforts to gather input from residents. Newberry gave a presentation at the April 15 Central Area Neighborhood Association [CANA] meeting at Hagen Park. But a post card, with information about the presentation, was postmarked the day before and didn’t arrive in mailboxes until the day after the meeting. Newberry said the delayed mailing was caused by a delay in getting the contract signed with the owners of the properties he wants to build on. “We plan to definitely have another [presentation at a future CANA meeting].” No official plans have been filed with the city but Newberry hopes to do so soon. “I really am passionate about this project. It enhances the culture of town centers by providing more residents so people are walking to local establishments. It takes cars off the street and provides a more culturally diverse atmosphere.” WMG

This week’s question:

What are your thoughts on the 2016 presidential election so far? SFGN Staff SFGN’s “Speak OUT” is a weekly feature giving a regular voice to South Florida LGBT leaders. Below are some of their answers:

We have reached a critical point on LGBT equality. Our next president can tip the scales to a point where their is absolutely "no turning back” or it can wipe out many of the advances that have been initiated during our current president’s terms. It’s our decision, we either stay home and remain second class citizens or we get out and vote. The choice is simple."

— Anthony Timiraos, CEO/President, OUR Fund

In the past, the GOP has effectively and consistently used anti-gay bias as a tool to raise money and to draw voters to the polls. Now public opinion is rapidly changing, young Republican voters are rejecting anti-LGBT bigotry, and even conservative judges have been steadily ruling in favor of marriage equality. Candidates will be forced to take a strong position. It will be interesting to watch the Republican candidates agonize over whether to alienate their right-wing "base" or alienate the young and moderate voters. "

— Toni Armstrong, Founder/Director of BLAST Women of WPB

The Supreme Court is hanging on by a tenuous thread to fairness and LGBT equality. And with an overweight octogenarian (Scalia) and an 83-year old Ruth Bader Ginsberg likely to be replaced by the next president, we cannot afford to have someone in office who is not supportive of LGBT rights. I expect Hillary to emerge from the Democratic primaries as the victor and I look forward to casting my vote for her in November 2016. For those whose loyalty is directed elsewhere, please remember Ralph Nader and redirect your energies and support to Clinton’s candidacy so our steps toward LGBT equality are not erased." — David Jobin, executive director of The Stonewall National Museum & Archives

The expected Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality will have a huge impact on the temperament of conservative voters, many of whom already feel that their religious liberty is being trampled upon. Plan to hear more about Christians being victims of gay bullying. It's going to be an emotionally draining time for us."

— Brian McNaught, noted columnist, author and LGBT activist

Dear Sir:

Witness

While you may have achieved the height of cleverness among religious dilettantes, your examples of “commands” are unfortunately far from the mark. They are responses to particular needs of a particular time in order to distinguish the children of Israel from the surrounding Gentiles and the Levitical and Aaronic priesthoods from one another and the general Hebrew population. But more importantly, Christians do not accept all of the Hebrew Testament as normative, Christ and Saint Paul making this quite clear. This nation was founded by individuals who sought to be free to practice their faith freely, without restriction and coercion. Unfortunately, except for Maryland and its Catholic founders, they refused to grant the same freedom to others (Pennsylvania allowed everyone except papists).

Therefore, the Constitution was amended to prevent the Federal Government from interfering in religious practice, even though states continued to have state religions if they so desired until after the Civil War. Insofar as your slander of red state populations and legislatures, it is expressive of your own hatreds and prejudices. Freedom to refrain from violating one’s conscience is fundamental to the American experiment and recognized from the founding. Quakers and Amish exempt from military service, Jehovah’s Witnesses need not salute the flag, members of the military provided with paid chaplains, on and on. Whatever your situation, baking a cake or taking pictures of a gay wedding cannot rise to the importance of national security and defense.

“A History of Loneliness” By: John Boyne

Terri Schlichenmeyer

$26.00 / higher in Canada 352 pages c.2015, Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Throughout your life, the faith you’ve held has sustained you. In times of fear, you’ve prayed for courage. On troubled days, you’ve asked for favors. You’ve thrown gratitude heavenward, and you’ve demanded condemnation from the Higher Power you know. Some prayers are answered, some are not. But what if your religion failed you or, as in the new book “A History of Loneliness” by John Boyne, if it quietly eased away? Once Odran Yates’ mother informed him that he had “a vocation,” Odran never questioned that he would someday be a priest. She told him that, shortly after their family of five became three in a tragedy they rarely discussed. She said it after she’d become devout and made Odran and his sister, Hannah, attend Mass every Sunday – and her proclamation made sense to him. So, as a sixteen-year-old, Odran went to Clonliffe College seminary in his native Ireland, where he roomed with Tom Cardle, the boy he considered his best friend. While Odran was certain that he was perfectly suited to be a priest, Tom was another matter. Once, while in seminary, Tom tried to leave but his father brought him back, black and blue, and left him. Odran had wondered if that was why Tom was prone to fits of strangeness. He’d lost contact with Tom years ago, but Odran had heard rumors that his friend was moved a lot, parish to parish. That seemed odd, and it’d been upsetting that Archbishop Cordington wanted Odran to leave his beloved position as librarian at a boys’ college to take over in Tom’s latest

move. The Archbishop promised that it would be a short-term change, but weeks would become years. With his sister ailing, his nephews estranged, and the job he loved lost, Odran hated being a mere parish priest, and he “didn’t know what to think.” “But there’s the lie,” he said. “… I did know what to think. Only I could not bring myself to think it.” Respectfully outraged, timely, scandalous, and loaded with more than a little controversy, “A History of Loneliness” shimmers like a multifaceted diamond. Indeed, I barely know where to start – perhaps with the character of Odran…. Odran is a simple man, a clueless goalong-to-get-along kind of guy who likes to think of himself as responsible and intuitive. He’s a likeable lad but not really friendship material; he’s predictable, gossipy, and staid except on the occasions when he doubts his faith and his vows. That’s when he surprises himself, as well as us but author John Boyne doesn’t stop there: in a setting of modernday Ireland and Rome, Boyne populates this tale with close-lipped, complicated people; gives it dialogue rich with Irish brogue; and hands his readers plenty of exceptional back-plots. That adds up to a stunner of a novel that feels like reading a movie, one that needs to jump to the top of your To-Read list today. But first – clear your calendar. Once you start “A History of Loneliness,” you don’t have a prayer.

HOMO HISTORY 101 Pier Angelo

Solon

, depicted here in an Islamic miniature, was known for laws that separated slaves from having intercourse with free born men. He also denied citizenship to slave traders of free born boys. MINOS, son of Zeus and Europa, is

the mythical king of Crete, to whom the Greeks attributed a large part of their culture, formalized pederasty in Crete, according to Aristotle in order to prevent overpopulation.

LYCURGUS, the legendary lawgiver of Sparta (about 800 BC), declared in his laws that lay the foundation of the Spartan virtue, that "no one who does not have a (male) friend in his bed can be a good citizen." All his reforms were directed towards the three Spartan virtues: equality (among citizens), military fitness, and austerity. Lycurgus is depicted in several U.S. government buildings because of his legacy as a lawgiver.

SOLON (ca. 634-560 BC), the Athenian statesman who in his poetry showed himself entranced with boys, enacted important laws to regulate pederasty: No slave was allowed to have intercourse with a freeborn boy. Another law deprived those of their citizenship who kept free boys in prostitution. However, these laws applied only to Athenian citizens, not to the many "xenoi" immigrants and their descendants. POLYCRATES and ANACREON, the well-known ruler of Samos, who after a life of enormous felicity and splendor was betrayed by the Persian satrap Orontas and died on the cross in 522 BC. He had surrounded himself with a retinue of choice pages. When the poet Anacreon stayed at the court of Polycrates, he fell in love with Smerdis, could not take his eyes off the boy's sumptuous hair and celebrated the dark abundance of these locks in his songs. Smerdis, in the vain nature of boys, enjoyed his praise very much. But in tyrannical temper and a fit of jealousy, Polycrates had Smerdis' hair cut off to hurt both the boy and the poet. Anacreon, however, did not show his irritation, but acted as if the boy had decided to bereave himself of the ornament of his locks. He wrote a poem to scold him for his folly, which thereby just became another homage.

HIERON, king of Syracuse 478-467 BC, was a high-minded and noble prince, protector of the arts and science; at his court he gathered the most famous poets of the time, such as Pindar, Aeschylus, Simonides, Bacchylides. There is a work of Xenophon, entitled "Hieron," relating a discourse with Simonides about the advantages and disadvantages of a life as a king as compared with a life as private citizen and on the best methods by which a king may become popular and make his subjects happy. The conversation also turns upon pederasty. Hieron says that he cannot quite enjoy this, as he lacks just what makes love sweet, the wooing longing, because everybody complies with a king's wishes at once. If you want to learn more about your gay heritage and those who paved the way, through activism, sacrifice, courage and civil disobedience to give us a better and freer life you can visit The Stonewall Museum & Archives in Wilton Manors. Suddenly Stylish, Surprisingly Sassy

About 10 years ago, a reality show called The Swan took dowdy women, gave them boobs and cheekbones and botox, thus turning them into eye-catching beauties. Never mind that they were perennially insecure and couldn’t walk in heels — they looked good and that made for good TV. The 2016 Acura ILX compact luxury sedan is the beneficiary of a Swan–like transformation. The ILX started life as a forgettable, warmed-over Honda Civic in 2013, but has become something of a looker for 2016, thanks to a nose job that blessed it with classy grille, LED headlamps and a buttlift that gives it new more LEDs out back and sculpted bumper. To be fair to the ILX, however, it can definitely walk in heels, so to speak. A snappier suspension sharpens its handling (especially in new A-spec trim) while a more powerful four-cylinder and an eight-speed automatic transmission breathe new life into its engine bay whilst raising fuel economy. The interior has received welcome upgrades in material quality and technology features, too, though not much in terms of design changes. Best of all, prices remain attractive, with base models starting under $29K and loaded models rising up into the mid-$30K range. As a result of all these measures, the ILX’ confidence rises higher than any of those wobbly, insecure beauty queens ever had when they walked out from behind the Swan curtain for the first time. Now let’s see if anyone notices.

on “bar bites,” many times the prices for those items is exactly the same as it is on the dinner menu, or the serving size is reduced to compensate for the lower price. Morton’s also woos the pre-theater set with a prixfixe menu and complimentary valet parking. The menu, priced at $52 per person, is available from 5:306:30 p.m. and includes a choice of Morton’s or Caesar salad, entrée, vegetable or potato and dessert. Entrée selections include filet mignon and lump crab cakes among other options. The food at the street-side café is better than it has to be (or what you might expect) although service is a bit haphazard. In addition to daily specials listed on the blackboard there are also theme nights. On Monday beef tacos are only a buck each, chicken wings are 50 cents each on Tuesday, on Wednesday all burgers are half price and on Thursday, it’s 2 for 1 dinners with a drink purchase.

Sizzling Summer Specials The places locals frequent may take a hit during the summer, but the restaurants and bars that rely on tourists really have to go the extra mile to bring in business during the off season. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Visitors Bureau offers a summer discount card valid May 1 to Oct. 1. Some of the discounts are only available during certain hours or on weekdays. Go to www.Sunny.org/Ways-ToPlay/Summer to print out coupons or have them mail you a special discount card. Check the website for specific details, but among the dining deals are:

Naked Grape's Caleb and His Love For Cheese Chef Spotlight:

Natalya Jones

Walk into Wilton Manor’s Naked Grape and wait for your eyes to adjust. The dimly lit, cozy atmosphere has soft café-esque music in the background with friends and couples huddled intimately at tables. Two older women smile over yellow white wine and a cheese plate while men at the bar laugh a bit too loud, reminiscent of someone who has drank a little too much. But in a good way, of course “Every wine bar or cheese restaurant has to have its own identity,” said Naked Grape Chef Caleb Ben-Avram, slicing cheese in an intricate, precise manner. I just asked him what makes his bar stand out over everyone else’s. “The cheese is high quality. Everything is housemade. I don’t buy anything premade.” An odd thing about Naked Grape is that only one reservation per night is allotted and people can stay at tables as long as they want. There is no TV, and there is no Wi-Fi. “Our attitude here is, ‘talk to each other’”, smiled Caleb, his eyes crinkly

kindly in the corners. The Naked Grape is the antitheses of a noisy sports bar, filled with millennials taking “one more” picture, only to snap at least 8 more. Caleb is a unique chef. He colored hair for 25 years, and after moving to the South Florida area from Ohio, he decided to run his own show as a chef. The culinary research he has done include Google searches and classes, such as certifications he is getting through the American Cheese Society. Yes, that’s right: no food universities trust fund babies attend or that require a premed student’s equivalent of a loan. Just a man and his love of food and entertaining people. His recipes are just as simple: Some he created, and some are adapted and tweaked to his liking. His motto is, “Can I do this with the resources I have?” Judging by the flow of smiling customers and the positivity radiating from the restaurant, he certainly has succeded.

Spanish Chorizo Braised in Tempranillo $10 This is a popular Spanish tapa that is made with fresh Spanish chorizo seasoned with smoked paprika and other seasonings, then braised in Tempranillo wine and topped with Marcona almonds and shredded Manchego cheese

Revisionist History Rocks at Broward Center J.W. Arnold

Credit: Shannon Oullette.

Robert Johnston, center, plays the title character in Outre Theatre’s production of “Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson” at the Broward Center. Don’t say you weren’t warned. Outre Theatre’s production of “Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson” at the Broward Center contains: strobing lights, profanity, offensive language, political satire, sexual innuendo, sexual out-uendo, taxidermy, corsets, children with tomahawks, bottled water, weasel coats, defaced portraits, twinkies, fake mustaches and a vibraslap. And then there’s the question of revisionist history. The rollicking rock musical about our seventh president, a big hit Off Broadway that fizzled on the big, big money stage on Broadway, is the perfect vehicle for Outre and its leadership, artistic director Skye Whitcomb and assistant Sabrina Lynn Gore. Plenty of modern references pepper the show, which explores Jackson’s youth, rise to prominence as an “Indian fighter” and hero of the Battle of New Orleans, and later, as the populist president who railed against the Washington aristocracy. In many ways, the show offers especially relevant commentary today as the public discourse focuses on the one percent and the seeming political power of the monied elite a century and a half later. Stymied by a belligerent Congress, Jackson resorted to sweeping executive actions similar to those taken by President Obama, only to be labeled a tyrant. The book by Alex Timbers and score by Michael Friedman also takes aim at homosexuals, liberals, environmentalists and the other frequent targets of modern conservatives. Robert Johnston offers a breakout performance, transforming Jackson into an Emo rock star, dramatically delivering the internal conflict the president faced while soaring vocally in numbers such as “I’m Not that Guy” and “I’m So that Guy.” Between the theatrical and musical demands, it’s a tough role to pull off, but Johnston

conquers, guyliner and all. The strong ensemble cast features many familiar young performers, all with strong voices, covering a number of roles: Kaitlyn O’Neill (Rachel Jackson), Rick Pena (Henry Clay), Conor Walton (John Quincy Adams) and Noah Levine (Martin Van Buren). Jennifer Murphy is the lesbian, wheelchair-bound storyteller, a Wellesley grad student who wrote her thesis about Jackson and often gets sidetracked with her personal historical recollections. The players are accompanied by an accomplished rock band led by Kristen Long, who did triple duty as musical director, keyboardist and the fill-in for the storyteller after Jackson pushes her off a cliff. Yes, a cliff. (We’re thinking that didn’t really happen, either.) The Broward Center’s Abdo New River Room is an appropriate space for the single set production, a graffiti-covered Antebellum sitting room designed by Gore. She also created the ‘80s punk-inspired costumes that manage never to stray too far from the actual fashions of the early19th century. And, while the performances were polished and delivered with verve, some of the technical aspects still need some work, lighting and sound, in particular. No doubt the kinks will get worked out over the two-week run. In many ways, history is still deciding Jackson’s legacy. Did the so-called Trail of Tears make him a visionary who simply enacted manifest destiny or the genocidal murderer of tens of thousands of Native Americans forced to march west? History is often revisionist and attitudes evolve — or devolve. Just ask the Texas state textbook commission. Regardless, Outre’s production of “Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson” delivers a thought-provoking performance despite the frequent f-bombs, sexual innuendo, sexual outuendo, taxidermy and the lot.

Outre Theatre Co. presents “Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson” through May 17 at the Broward Center’s Abdo New River Room in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $30. For tickets and show times, go to BrowardCenter.org. soflagaynews //

Porn Actor’s Death A Mystery

Hunter Houston

There are several questions surrounding recent news media reports of the death of a popular porn actor. Rylan Knox, an adult entertainment performer for multiple studios, apparently took his life, according to friends. The website Str8UpGayPorn.com is reporting that Knox, a gay porn “star,” died of an apparent suicide. Knox, the website claims, performed in scenes for Falcon, NakedSword and Hot House studios. The story of Knox’s death was tweeted and shared throughout the social media sphere. Miami Beach porn actor Nick Cross was one of the first to tweet of Knox’s death. Another porn actor, Ryan Rose, tweeted, “A colleague of mine took his life today please please please Love thy self & everyone around you.” SFGN is attempting to verify Knox’s death. A call to the LGBT liaison, Det. Jose Fernandez of the Miami Beach Police Department, got nowhere. Fernandez said he was not aware of any suicide by a porn actor in Miami Beach. Str8UpGayPorn reports Knox hung himself in his boyfriend’s apartment on April 29. Cross

was the first to reveal the death in several tweets, although it appears those tweets have been deleted. Knox’s suicide raises many questions surrounding the porn industry. David Elijah, a Facebook commentator, took to SFGN’s page on Monday afternoon, “We need to question why this happens so often in that business.” Falcon, NakedSword and Hot House studios have yet to issue a statement regarding Knox’s reported death.
