Turkey Elections Heating Up
The election in Turkey has captured the attention of the global diplomatic community. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan faces his toughest challenge since taking power. Boysan Yakar, a human rights activist from Istanbul, spoke with SFGN via telephone last weekend while attending the Victory Fund Institute’s candidate and campaign training program in Jacksonville. “There is no more space in the Turkish

Assembly for AKP,” Yakar said in reference to the ruling Justice and Development Party, led by Erdogan. Yakar, whose visit to Florida was funded by the U.S. State Department, said he is a member of the CHP, the founding political party of modern Turkey. “We defend secularism and equality and fight discrimination,” said Yakar, who identifies as a gay man. Voting in Turkey is scheduled for June 7.

Kameny, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 86, spent decades fighting injustice and discrimination in the federal workplace and is credited for coining the slogan, “Gay is Good.” An induction ceremony is scheduled for June 23 at the DOL’s Francis Perkins Building in Washington, D.C.

Gilead Sciences Announces Funding Opportunities John McDonald
One of America’s pharmaceutical giants is investing into the HIV prevention method known as PrEP. Gilead Sciences is accepting bids for research into pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Winning bids will be funded, Gilead said, through its corporate grants program. “PrEP has become a major topic in our community,” said Impulse Group South Florida President A.J. Alegria. “We see a lot of opinions, a lot of debate about whether it’s the right thing to do socially and medically.” Alegria moderated a panel discussion about PrEP in February during an Impulse Group event in Hollywood. At that discussion, panelist Dr. Steven Santiago, a medical doctor for Care Resources said PrEP was prescribed for “high risk individuals.” In its press release announcing funding for PrEP research, Gilead Sciences said it is looking to support organizations focused on high risk populations, such as young adult MSM (men who have sex with me) of all races, Hispanic/Latino ethnicity, transgender women and heterosexual African American
men. Those categories of populations have a higher prevalence and risk of HIV infection, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is unclear just how much funding Gilead intends to allocate, but bidders are encouraged to submit their applications for consideration by June 30. Applications and/ or questions should be sent to grants@gilead. com.

Meet Caitlyn Jenner: Vanity Fair Releases July Cover
Say hello to Caitlyn and goodbye to Bruce. It was recently reported Bruce Jenner was going to debut his new look and identity as a woman on the July cover of Vanity Fair, but the publication surprisingly tweeted the cover of the athlete's new identity and look a month ahead of schedule. Jenner will now be known as Caitlyn and will hereafter be referred to as a woman, using female pronouns. Vanity Fair also published a short blurb about the cover where they use female pronouns. Vanity Fair writes author Buzz Bissinger "was given unfettered access to Jenner and her family" and the July cover story "chronicles the tensions, traumas, and courage that shaped Caitlyn into the woman you see today."
The publication also confirmed celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz shot "the first portraits of Caitlyn, which were taken in her Malibu home." "If I was lying on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never ever did anything about it, I would be lying there saying, 'You just blew your entire life,'" Jenner said. Shortly after Vanity Fair tweeted the Jenner cover, the athlete announced her arrival to Twitter. "I'm so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can't wait for you to get to know her/me," Jenner tweeted.

There was no immediate word on whether any of those detained would be charged, the Interfax news agency reported. Animosity toward homosexuals is high in Russia. Authorities routinely deny permission to hold gay-rights demonstrations on the grounds of maintaining public order and avoiding violence.

(Submitted) The "Nonstop City's" 17th Annual Pride Festival will be taking place between June 7-12, with its highlight being the City's largest ever gay parade, with an expected all-time record 180,000 participants compared to las year’s crowd of 130,000, making it Asia's largest ever gay pride event. This year's events will focus on supporting the Transgender Community, a fact that made Eurovision Star Conchita Wurst, Austrian Winner of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, decide to come to Tel Aviv to perform in the parade. Events include parade along the city's world-famous beach, LGBT culture festival, film festival, conferences, ongoing chill-out beach and Tel Aviv's largest ever Gay Party (to host 7,000 party-goers at the City's football stadium). "We are pleased to see the vision we have cultivated this year - pride events reflecting the diversity of the LGBT community, and bringing the transgender community to the forefront - become a reality, said Yaniv Weizman, Member of Tel Aviv City Council, “Tel Aviv celebrates all those who help make it, every day, the city that loves all genders."

ustralian Opposition Party Proposes Gay Marriage Law
(AP) Australia's political opposition hopes to harness momentum from the Irish gay marriage referendum after it proposed a law Monday that would recognize same-sex marriages, which the country's conservative prime minister opposes. Center-left Labor Party leader Bill Shorten became the first leader of a major Australian political party to back a bill to overturn a national ban on gay marriage. Gay rights advocates fear that government lawmakers will be reluctant to support the bill as such a law would be seen as a political victory for Shorten over Prime Minister Tony Abbott, a former Roman Catholic seminarian and a staunch opponent of marriage equality. Shorten told Parliament the law would not compel religious clerics to officiate at same-sex marriages. He called

(AP) Barnard College's Board of Trustees is expected to vote next week on a formal policy governing admission of transgender students. The vote at the Manhattan campus follows those at a number of women's colleges across the country over the past year. The policies, which all acknowledge changing norms regarding gender, differ in their breadth. Here's a look at some of them: BRYN MAWR COLLEGE In February, Bryn Mawr announced it would consider eligible for admission transgender women, intersex individuals who do not identify as male, individuals assigned female at birth who have not taken medical or legal steps to identify as male, and individuals assigned female at birth who do not identify as either female or male. MOUNT HOLYOKE COLLEGE In September, Mount Holyoke announced it would consider for admission transgender women, transgender men, those born female who do not identify with either gender, those born female but not identifying as male or female, and those born male who identify as "other" but that identity includes female. Not considered for admission: those born male who identify as male. SMITH COLLEGE In May, Smith announced it would consider eligible transgender women but not transgender men, nor individuals who don't identify as either female or male. Those who become trans men while at Smith have full support and can graduate. MILLS COLLEGE Last August, Mills became the first women's college in the United States to accept applications from transgender women and those applicants "assigned female at birth who do not fit on the gender binary." WELLESLEY COLLEGE In March, Wellesley announced it would consider "any applicant who lives as a woman and consistently identifies as a woman." The policy excludes trans men but includes those assigned female at birth who are "non-binary" and, like at Smith, those who transition while at Wellesley can stay and graduate.

Francisco Columbarium SanRededicates Milk Niche
The San Francisco Columbarium rededicated a larger memorial niche in honor of slain city supervisor Harvey Milk for its observance of Harvey Milk Day. The niche contains items that were donated years ago by Dan Nicoletta, a gay man and longtime photographer who once worked with Milk at his Castro Camera shop. In a Facebook post, Nicoletta, who now lives in Oregon and could not be present at the May 23 rededication ceremony, said that the Columbarium was "upgrading Harvey to a larger niche." The niche contains memorial items; his ashes were spread over the Pacific Ocean and some are buried in the sidewalk under a plaque in front of Milk's old camera store, now a store and action center run by the Human Rights Campaign. Calling it a "treasure trove of wonderful materials," Nicoletta donated a medium-sized box filled with election pins, magazines, and photos, including one with Milk and former Mayor George Moscone, who was killed along with Milk in 1978. The project was delayed after the flurry of activity surrounding the 2008 biopic Milk, for which Nicoletta served as a consultant. Nicoletta said that the decision to donate the items came about in a casual conservation with the Columbarium staff as they viewed Milk as an icon for the advancement of the LGBT movement. "Harvey would find people who believed that they were not worthy, that they were less than or not normal. He looked

Leaders of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party are rejecting calls to embrace full-fledged marriage for gay couples following Irish voters' decision to legalize it. Same-sex couples in Germany have been able to enter civil unions that fall short of marriage since a center-left government introduced them in 2001. Merkel's Christian Democratic Union has been reluctant to go further, though its coalition agreement with the centerleft Social Democrats pledges to end "discrimination" against civil unions. The Cabinet recently approved administrative changes to improve their status. Several Social Democrat-led states are advocating full gay marriage, which has some supporters in Merkel's CDU. General Secretary Peter Tauber said Monday that party leaders want to take "no further steps beyond what is in the coalition deal," news agency dpa reported.

Feminist Teen's Yearbook Quote Goes Viral
(EDGE) A California teen's yearbook quote has gone viral for its strong message on gender and marriage equality, receiving thousands of retweets and favorites. WCVB.com reported that 18-year-old Caitlyn Cannon, who graduated from a high school in Oak Hills, California, has blown up Twitter with her comments about feminism. "I need feminism because I intend on marrying rich and can't do that if my wife and I are making .75 cents for every dollar a man makes," wrote Cannon in her yearbook. Kudos to the high school for not censoring the teen's comments. Cannon told Cosmpolitan.com that she was "really gay" and a feminist to boot. "While it would have been fun to submit something funny or silly, I think it was even more rewarding to submit the truth, and call some attention to it," she said. Photo: Facebook.

Coming-Out Speech Blocked by School
A high school valedictorian who was barred from giving a graduation speech that revealed he is gay received another chance to deliver his message. Evan Young delivered the speech Sunday at an awards ceremony held by the gay rights group Out Boulder in Colorado City. The Daily Camera newspaper (http://bit.ly/1FlPSTt ) reports that the crowd cheered during the speech, which ended with the 18-year-old asking people to hug someone different from themselves. Congressman Jared Polis was among those who commended Young at the event. The teen says he agreed to make some changes to the speech requested by the principal of Twin Peaks Charter Academy High School but refused to remove the revelation of his sexuality. He says he submitted a revised version but the school in Longmont contends he didn't. Photo: Facebook.

Asylum Seeker’s Deportation Flight Cancelled
Jamaican Orashia Edwards is appealing a rejected claim for asylum after a tribunal alleged he was ‘experimenting’ and had been dishonest about his sexuality. Immigration authorities have cancelled the deportation flight of a Jamaican asylum seeker who faced removal from the UK after the Home Office refused to accept he was bisexual. Orashia Edwards, 34, had been held at Morton Hall immigration removal centre in Lincolnshire after being detained during a scheduled meeting with immigration officials. His family were told he could be deported at any time from 5 May, but Edwards was instead detained for nearly a month before being released pending a further appeal against his rejected claim for refugee status – the latest in a series of prolonged periods in detention, according to a report in the Guardian. news election 2016 White House Watch:
George Pataki
John McDonald
Yet another white male has entered the race for the Republican Party’s U.S. Presidential nomination. This week, New York’s George Pataki is analyzed for SFGN’s White House Watch. George Elmer Pataki, 69, served as the Governor of New York from 1995 to 2006. On Thursday in New Hampshire, Pataki announced he is running for President. This was news immediately dismissed by the old guard of journalism. “It may be difficult for Mr. Pataki, 69, to raise money for his campaign or to qualify for national debates,” wrote Alexander Burns of the New York Times. Pataki knows the taste of victory, having chased Democratic kingpin Mario Cuomo from office in Albany, N.Y. He governed New York, then the third largest state in the United States, for three terms. That record in New York was how Pataki introduced himself to a New Hampshire crowd, saying “after 12 years of my conservative policies, we replaced dependency with opportunity, resignation with hope, mere

existence with dreams, a welfare check with a paycheck.” Pataki signed a gay rights bill while New York Governor and is pro-choice, but considers the two issues, “distractions” for Republicans. Pataki claims a J.D. from Columbia Law School and a law degree from Yale Law School. He attended the New Haven, Connecticut campus with former U.S. President George W. Bush. In New Hampshire last weekend, Pataki described himself as a centrist, telling The Times he is “a voice of moderation.” The nation’s first GOP debate is scheduled for Aug. 6, but only the top 10 candidates in the polls will be admitted. The debate will be aired by the Fox News Channel.

Orlando Celebrates 25 Years of ‘Gay Days’ John McDonald
Photo: Wikipedia. Dee-jays, pool parties, drag queens, bear gatherings and all of the entertainment Central Florida has to offer. It’s a big gay week in Orlando. “For a lot of us, it’s our vacation,” said Kevin Daniel, a gay man and frequent visitor to the Walt Disney World Resorts. Daniel and three of his closest buddies are planning to pile into his Chevrolet Cavalier and motor down from the Florida Panhandle for a weekend of fun and frolicking with fellow gays. Daniel said he loves Disney, and visiting the Orlando area theme parks during the first week in June guarantees bountiful gay options. “We have a spectacular week of special events lined up all around central Florida,” said Chris Alexander-Manley, President of Gay Days. Lines are typically part of the theme park experience in Central Florida, an area of the state with several huge entertainment complexes such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World. Ryan Burr, a friend of Daniel’s, said hanging out in the queue is half the fun. “There’s a lot of cruising going on when you’re waiting for a ride,” said Burr, 35, a standup comedian from Ohio. But gays giving each other the glare is what worries some conservative minded Floridians. In years past, the Florida Family Association paid for airplanes to fly over Orlando with banners reading, “Warning: Gay Day at Disney, 6/1.” Traditionally, gays have worn red colored clothing during their outings to the Magic Kingdom. Billy Looper, Executive Director for One Magical Weekend, said the controversy has died down and with the event’s 25th anniversary comes calmer expectations. “So the controversy is always with a select
few who want to be visible, but it’s getting less and less and Disney and every other corporate sponsor is getting better and better to work with,” Looper said. One Magical Weekend is a separate venture from Gay Days. But the two events coincide each year. A One Magical Weekend pass includes access to nine events. The action begins Friday with “Riptide” at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Waterpark. “This sounds great,” Burr said. “There’s bound to be so many guys there showing off all their hard work in the gym. I just can’t wait.” Burr said he had at least three swimsuits he was packing for the weekend, unable yet to decide just which one he would sport at Typhoon Lagoon. “It will be a game day decision,” Burr grinned. Those in Orlando this weekend will surely need to be at the top of their game as venues across the city cater to the gay market. At the Parliament House, a longtime gay hospitality destination, parties are planned throughout the weekend featuring celebrity performances. Friday is Color Me Bad, Saturday is Wilson Phillips and Sunday is Salt-N-Pepa. Parliament House is celebrating its 40th anniversary and the Orange Blossom Trail venue is offering shuttle service to two of the other prominent sites this weekend. Those sites are B Hotel and Double Tree Hotel. B Hotels and Resorts is part of the One Magical Weekend event. “Therapy” pool parties featuring the sounds of international dee-jays are scheduled during the day Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lake Buena Vista resort. On Saturday night (7 p.m. to 2 a.m. EDT), June 6, Epcot takes center stage with “Red Version One: Unmasked” which carries a red clothing dress code.

Wilton Manors police arrested drag performer Jakita Sky Monday night, real name Jason Sciallo, who is being charged with battery, and possession of a small amount of marijuana, according to the arrest report. Witnesses say Scaiallo got into a verbal altercation with another drag performer after a show at Village Pub. During the altercation, Sciallo allegedly tried to knock the wine glass out of the other performers hand, which hit her in the face, and chipped a tooth. Sciallo is being held on $3,500 bond and is awaiting trial.
Deliver the Dream Delivers Revenue To Charity Cases John McDonald A well-heeled auction in Wilton Manors last week delivered major proceeds to participating charities and organizations. In total, $21,000 was raised via a "Red Hot & In Style" charity date auction held May 20. Jonny Torenzi , a bachelor from Miami, was one of a dozen individuals to put together a prize package for bidders at the Village Pub. “Great concept, I had fun,” said Torenzi, a realtor, who brought $300 with his prize package that included a three-hour sunset yacht cruise. Deliver the Dream spokeswoman Christie Galeano said the auction, featuring some of the most desirable men and women in South Florida, was a smashing success. “All proceeds from the event will fund Deliver the Dream’s specialized Family Retreat Program, serving families living with HIV/ AIDS, Cancer, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and other life-changing illnesses and crises,” Galeano said. Deliver the Dream, a non-profit respite and
retreat program, does not define the family unit and is proud to serve the gay and lesbian families in South Florida, Galeano said. More than 200 people attended the Village Pub auction, emceed by Electra, and featuring bachelors and bachelorettes from news outlets, businesses and local organizations. SFGN was represented by advertising executive Edwin Neimann, who fetched more than $300 with his prize package that included a couples massage, dinner and a movie. “We are so happy with how the entire Wilton Manors community – gay and straight – came out to support this event,” said Paul Withrow, Executive Director of Deliver the Dream. “It takes a village to make our mission possible and the generosity of our community helps us make a significant difference in the lives of countless families in crisis.” More than 6,500 family members have attended a Deliver the Dream weekend retreat since 2002. The retreats are part of an on-going effort to help families heal.

Caitlyn Jenner's Coming Out is a Teaching Moment This iconic all-American athlete’s story should inspire us to demand change
Christiana Lilly A straight ally
The online world blew up on June 1, 2015 when Vanity Fair released its cover story: Caitlyn Jenner. Hell, it was such big news that the pregnancy announcement by Kim Kardashian was an afterthought. That's some pretty serious stuff. Formerly Bruce Jenner, the transgender woman known as the patriarch of the Jenner-Kardashian reality television empire has been under speculation for months, if not years, of being transgender. Everyone's curiosity was alleviated when she officially came out to ABC’s Diane Sawyer in a two-hour interview on April 24. Then, with much glitz and glamour, she was photographed by famed photographer Annie Leibowitz for a 22-page spread in Vanity Fair. She told the world, "you can call me Caitlyn." Twitter, Facebook and Instagram instantly lit up on fire. Although most posts have been flooded with positive feedback for Jenner ("She looks beautiful!" "She's hotter than Kris!" "Welcome Caitlyn!") there has also been the expected negative response to her "coming out." It was a mix of Kardashian fatigue, claims that she is not really a she, or that she's a publicity whore. Regardless of the response, the fact is that this stereotypically ultimate man — she was an Olympic gold medalist as a decathlon athlete at 26, no small feat — coming out as a trans woman has gotten people talking. People are tripping over the proper terminology and gender pronouns (we're all learning, Associated Press included), but people are talking about it. In the photo shoot, Jenner displays her beauty with expertly done hair and makeup while adorned in haute couture clothing and fine jewelry. But for many transgender people, this is not the reality. While we're on the topic of transgender people, let's talk about the facts:

Transgender people are not a protected population in employment discrimination in 33 states (Pride at Work) Transgender people are currently banned from serving in the military (check out our story on this) 46 percent of transgender men and 42 percent of transgender women reported that they have attempted suicide (Williams Institute,) Transgender prisoners are 13 times more likely to be sexually assaulted than non-transgender prisoners. (Lambda Legal) 19 percent of transgender people are living in poverty, compared to 5 percent of the general population. (GLAAD) Although studies vary, up to 66 percent of transgender people, especially transgender women of color, will experience assault in their lifetime. (Office for Victims of Crime) One in five transgender people have experienced housing discrimination and one in 10 have been evicted because of their gender identity (National Center for Transgender Equality) Transgender people also experience healthcare discrimination; with 19 percent of those surveyed saying they were denied care because of their gender identity (National Transgender Discrimination Survey)
While we salute Jenner for finally being herself and applaud her beauty in her coming out at Vanity Fair, let's take advantage of this moment. Let's take the time to educate ourselves and others about trans people. Let's look behind the Photoshop and see the reality of the plight of transgender people. Let's demand change for our transgender sisters and brothers.

SPJ Steps Up to The Plate for Diversity Jason Parsley
Last month in a column I blasted the Society of Professional Journalists and its President Dana Neuts for ignoring the Indiana religious controversy saying “SPJ’s silence, speaks volumes.” Being headquartered in the state I felt the issue at least deserved a strongly worded condemnation to show the organization’s commitment to diversity. I am currently the past president of our state chapter in Florida and I have thrown my name in the hat to run for the national board. Since last month much has happened. After my column was published SPJ did end up responding. First my local chapter, where I am past president, issued a statement urging the national board to do something. In turn Neuts published a blog post, “Why did SPJ take so long to speak out on Indiana’s RFRA legislation?” while also issuing a joint statement with SDX Foundation President Robert Leger saying this: “SPJ and SDX do not and will not discriminate in terms of employment, membership or advancement in leadership. As an Indiana-based organization we are disappointed that such an ambiguous law was even considered. We encourage lawmakers to swiftly pass and the governor to sign into law the amended bill clarifying their intentions, leaving no doubt that discrimination against the LGBTQ community will not be allowed in Indiana, now or in the future.”
And their commitment to this issue did not end there. At SPJ’s national board meeting held last

month in Indiana they discussed what to do since at that time Louisiana was also considering a similar religious freedom bill. Neuts wrote on her blog recapping the meeting: “Our hope is that the bill will be defeated. If not, SPJ will have to reconsider hosting its 2016 spring board meeting, and SPJ and its partner RTDNA will have to discuss the implications for EIJ16, both scheduled for New Orleans next year.” Those board discussions turned into this release “SPJ calls attention to Louisiana’s Marriage and Conscience Act in light of 2016 conference” saying “All members of SPJ should be welcome in New Orleans and in Louisiana next year, and no member should be subjected to discrimination while attending EIJ16.” Additionally the board came up with the idea of hosting a selfie day to promote and celebrity diversity. “Today, we're asking all SPJ members to post a selfie in social media while holding a sign with #SPJ4All and using the hashtag in the post to emphasize that SPJ's welcomes everyone.” I applaud SPJ’s turnaround and stepping up to the plate on this issue so far. But things can change in a heartbeat. Just two hours after the Louisiana legislature voted down their version of the so-called religious freedom bill down, the state’s governor, Bobby Jindal, signed an execute order, protecting “religious freedom.” Some suggest this order is nothing more than a “political statement” while others are not really sure what its effect will be. It may be too late to consider moving the location of the 2016 convention, but the board could still decide to move next year’s annual board meeting out of New Orleans in response to the executive order.

Over & Under - Got Chronophobia? Pier Angelo
A few weeks ago our community was “rocked" by another one of its vacuous controversies. Impulse Group South Florida, an organization that focuses on HIV education and prevention, as well as the sexual and overall health of the gay community, hosted a pool party at the Vagabond Hotel in Miami, bringing their educational efforts to the historic location. Those wishing to attend the event who were under the age of 40, were admitted free, but if you were a 41-year-old or older then a $50 surcharge applied. Talk about “educating” the young. It didn't take long for the shitstorm to start, squarely dividing the community into “under" and "over." Even the publisher of this newspaper jumped into the fray with his misguided editorials in support of the group's policy. Controversy is good because it gives rise to some sort of dialogue if not an exchange of ideas. Not that anybody is going to switch sides. To admit that one is wrong is anathema in American culture anyway. Of course it is a free country and of course there is still no cure for stupidity. Setting aside the silliness of it, what it boils down to is that once again a wing of the gay community has shown its shallower side. I was not enraged, like many, by the fact that people like me, over 40, had to pay to get into the party, while the “young studs" could get in for free. It is a subtle form of bully-ism and discrimination that should be condemned but, personally, I have very little desire to spend an afternoon, let alone $50, with a bunch of air heads who have nothing to say and are busy taking and posting "lonelys" of themselves. Their conversations around the pool, digital or real, probably did not exceed 140 characters. If I want their company I will do it in the privacy of my home by watching a porno DVD with the sound off. The underlying truth is different. Young homosexuals are obsessed with age and frightened by the process of aging to the point of not wanting to associate with older men (referred to as "trolls" by one of the attendees)

as if they carried a contagious disease. Their arrogance hides fear. Just young, beautiful people forever, right? Bullshit. They are scared of starting their future, scared of the responsibilities one day they will have to tackle, scared of losing their look. They are more scared of getting old than catching AIDS. They live in a fallen universe. I pity them and their insecurities. The mantra they keep telling themselves is: Forever Young. A battle that everybody loses, over and over, as each day comes to a close. The gym, the diet, the steroids, the clothes, the hair, the blond hair, early Viagra, then Botox, are some of the tools. It is so consuming and it doesn't work. They become caricatures of themselves. It's the drama of living outside of time and reality. Aging is the most natural thing in life and with taxes and death one of the few certainties we have. I have enjoyed my youth. I did not obsess over it. In fact I have cherished the progression of time. Each year brings a new ache but also a new discovery. The mind and the soul gain in wisdom, knowledge, capacity to understand people and the world. I am able to slow down the pace and appreciate life in full. I don't need or want to pay the price of admission because of what my ID card says. I know I am still young inside, where it truly matters. I am very comfortable with myself, who I am, what I do, what I don't do, what I have done. Yes, there are mornings when I look in the mirror that I briefly curse the new lines on my forehead, the bags under my eyes or the sprouting of another gray hair in the most unlikely place, but then I realize that's me, that's who I am, I cannot lie to myself. Father Time doesn't care one way or another. He would be charged admission at one of the Impulse parties. I can hear him laugh his head off at their delusions. In the meantime I love my rugged "lived-in" face. It is the mirror of my soul and that's what I want the world to see. I am not ashamed of it. Memo to the Impulse Group: thank you guys but I’d rather spend 50 bucks on a good bottle of red wine.

Student Upset Over Teachers Refusing to Answer Questions About “Gay Sex” Mr. Parsley, I am an 8th grade student at Ramblewood Middle School in Coral Springs. Towards the end of the year we are educated about our own sexuality and reproductive systems. I am extremely disappointed by the amount of homophobia in this program. Today (May 26, 2015), I had my first lesson. We were told in the beginning of the lesson that there were questions that our teacher could not answer because there is a handful of topics they’re told not to speak about. Then, our teacher passed out small pieces of paper and told us to write questions we had on them and put them in the box. I wrote “Why don’t we learn about gay sex? People need to know this,” or something along those lines. Then, put it in the box. The first question he read was about HIV/AIDS, he answered. Then, he took the other questions out of the box and read them to himself. He said he couldn’t

answer any of them. Do you know what that means? That means that whoever trained him told him that he couldn’t talk about homosexuality. I strongly dislike assuming things, but it really looks like that was the standard. I am sick and tired of the school being homophobic because they’re afraid of how some bigoted parents will react. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth are four times more likely to commit suicide than straight people of the same age group (http:// www.thetrevorproject.org/pages/facts-aboutsuicide). One could wonder if a cause of this could be the lack of assurance that they are normal and included. They feel different and isolated. Please, help me stand up for what is right.

Commission May Hire New City Manager June 9 By Michael d’Oliveira The vote to install Assistant City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson as the new city manager may be held at the next commission meeting on June 9. Although no details about salary and benefits has been finalized or approved yet, Mayor Gary Resnick said at a previous commission meeting that he wants Henderson’s salary and benefits to be fair but “not the highest in the county.” Gallegos, who will retire in October, officially announced his intention to step down on Feb. 2. Hired in 1999, he gave early notice because he wanted to give the city enough time to find a replacement. Gallegos, like the rest of the commission, has
expressed his support for Henderson being chosen. Henderson, who has been with the city since 1999, has served as assistant city manager since 2003. If she is chosen, city commissioners will also have to start searching for her replacement. Although the commission has all but voted to replace Gallegos with Henderson, the urge to get her hired as soon as possible was expressed by more than one commissioner. “We need to move the city forward,” Vice Mayor Scott Newton said. Get a Green Thumb with Equality Park Garden Club By Natalya Jones
Tired of watching the flowers you planted wither and die to nothingness? No need to fret; join the Equality Park Garden Club to turn your thumb green! During meetings for this club, members can soon learn how to properly grow their own plants and flowers. "Our primary mission is information and education whereby we provide horticultural and landscape information to its members," said Chuck Nicholls, President of Equality Park Garden Club. Meetings take place 7:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month (omitting December) at the Pride Center. In addition, there are also plant exchanges, plant themed raffles and guest speakers. Adds Nicholls, "This is an opportunity for members to learn about tropical plant growing from each other as well as our guest speakers."
Nicholls started the club in April 2010 wanting to fulfill a need: he knew numerous homeowners locally were eager to learn how to grow plants. "Several friends got together and thought this organization would be a valuable asset in the community," the club president said. With 50-70 members in attendance at almost every meeting, it's safe to say that need has been met. When asked why people should join the club, Nicholls stated, "It's fun and an opportunity to meet people of similar 'green thumb' interests. Also refreshments served at each meeting are delicious." Get ready to plant that sunflower in no time! Membership costs $20 for single memberships and $25 for household memberships. The Pride Center, the meeting's location, is at 2040 N Dixie Hwy in Wilton Manors. WMG

Weekend Nightmare Gazette Wilton Manors
Opinion
Rental units are becoming an increasing problem in Wilton By Sal Torre
JUNE 3, 2015 • VOLUME 2 • ISSUE 11 2520 N. DIXIE HIGHWAY • WILTON MANORS, FL 33305 PHONE: 954-530-4970 FAX: 954-530-7943

You’ve waited all week for the weekend, looking forward to some time out on the Drive, some nice quiet time relaxing home, some yard work, maybe dinner with friends. Suddenly, your weekend is turned into a nightmare. Four cars pull up to the house nextdoor, and ten young men get out, unloading coolers, ice and beer. Oh no, the unregistered vacation rental next door has rented to a group of partygoers once again! Now you are doomed to endure loud music and cars parked everywhere as their friends show up for a huge party. The noise becomes unbearable that evening. You hear bottles breaking. Trash is thrown all over the yard. People are coming and going. Someone parked on your lawn and tore up the grass you have just redone. You’ve called the Police Department and Code Enforcement, only to be told once again that nothing can be done. Your weekend is now completely ruined. By Sunday evening, you’re frustrated and exhausted, and can’t wait to get back to work. This nightmare is becoming more and more customary as an increasing number of unregistered and unregulated vacation home rentals are popping up all over our city. Nearby neighbors watch their quality of life, their beautiful homes, and their peace and quiet taken away in the blink of an eye, due to someone operating a home as a mini-motel business right in the middle of their residential neighborhood, renting to large groups ready for a good time. The State of Florida has placed limits on what local municipalities can do to regulate vacation home rentals, once again giving city officials the all-too-easy excuse of, “Our hands are tied. The State will not allow us to do anything. There is nothing we can do.” Not so! We can demand that the city enforce their code, violations that residents can obviously see, but which seem to remain a challenge to the city. Some recent complaints have been addressed by Code Enforcement, and we hope this proactive engagement will
continue and we thank our city for moving in the right direction. Residents also have other tools at our disposal. We can check to see if the property and its owners are properly licensed and paying the appropriate taxes. Visit the Broward County Property Appraiser’s website, www.bcpa.net to find out if the property is homesteaded. If so, report them to the Homestead Fraud Hotline at 954-3576900. You can call the Wilton Manors Community Development Services Department, 954-390-2180, to see if property is registered as a rental property, as required by City Code. If not, report them. If the property is not properly licensed by the City and is homesteaded illegally, the owners are probably not paying the 5 and 6 percent taxes due to the county and the state. We can report suspected unregistered activity to Broward County Tourism Development and the State of Florida. Join together with your neighbors and work together when contacting City staff and filing complaints. There are many well managed rental homes here in Wilton Manors, with property owners and managers who take great pride in their properties, pay their taxes, screen prospective clients and keep advertised occupancy rates to a legal level. If you are fortunate to live next to this type of vacation rental property, reach out to the property manager or owner and introduce yourself. Many owners are also residents of our wonderful city and share the same passion for our quality of life. Unfortunately, the few bad apples who pack houses with as many people as possible, do not screen tenants, and look only to cash in are the ones creating the growing problem in our residential neighborhoods. Contact City officials and request that they take whatever steps necessary to preserve the character and quality of life within our residential neighborhoods. Some enforcement is possible if we all work together. Here’s to a wonderful weekend here in Wilton Manors. WMG

Time is running out for the organizers of this city’s Stonewall street festival. But at the May 26 commission meeting, organizers, the Wilton Manors Entertainment Group, said they were confident everything would be ready in time for the June 20 event. “We can still do it . . . but we can’t do it all,” said Corrie Boyd, the event’s entertainment manager. With less than three weeks left, Jeff Sterling, executive manager of the Wilton Manors Entertainment Group, said Stonewall is behind $10,000 in sponsors, $17,000 in vendors and $10,000 for the parade. But he said he was confident that the final sponsors and vendors would sign-up in time. “No matter what, we will be on budget. I’m confident it will come pouring in.” One reason for a shortage of vendors may be communications problems. “I would like to get a booth at the Stonewall festival but am having a lot of difficulty finding out how to register,” wrote Dr. Jared Wannenwetsch, a chiropractor in Fort Lauderdale, in an email to The Gazette. “Do you know whom I should contact about this? Any information you can provide will be very helpful” he asked. Commissioners urged city staff and the Entertainment Committee to work fast to tie up any loose ends. “Two weeks [before the event] is too late. Let’s get it done now,” said Vice Mayor Scott

Newton. “I want this to be a great event, as it always is. We don’t need to fall on our faces.” The festival will include vendors, live entertainment and a parade down Wilton Drive. The event starts at 1 p.m. and the parade starts at 6 p.m. Wilton Drive will be closed from 4:30 a.m. on June 20 to 4 a.m. on June 21. To close the street, the city has budgeted $4,000 and is waiving the $2,000 event permit fee and the $2,500 building permit fees. The cost to provide security is about $15,000. R&B girl group En Vogue has been announced as the event’s headline entertainment. Other musical acts have also been announced. Parking, at Hagen Park, 2020 Wilton Drive, and Richardson Park, 1937 Wilton Drive, will cost $15. In years past, private entities have organized the event but this year city officials decided to take it on themselves. To help run it, they appointed five volunteers, the Wilton Manors Entertainment Group, to work with city staff members. For more information or to become a vendor, visit WiltonManorsStonewall.com. NextGen Real Estate Leadership
Real Estate Geek
By James Oaksun Did you know there are more than 8,000 Realtors in the Greater Fort Lauderdale board? And at least another 15,000 people in Broward County who hold real estate licenses but are not Board members? Swing your wig at Village Pub some night and you're going to hit a Realtor. Or even two. And no, Mary, we are not all the same. The purchase of a home remains a significant decision. And going forward, it'll take a different sort of Realtor to add value to that process. In my opinion, there are some special gifts that leading Realtors of the future will need to bring to the marketplace. The first is a more scientifically based focus on properties and neighborhoods with the most appreciation potential. We've been through boom and bust, and with a return to more normal conditions an understanding of the drivers of value will be critical. The second factor is enhanced appreciation of the linkage between real estate and government. Flood insurance, for example, is an issue on which Congress sticks Band-Aids before kicking it down the road past the next election cycle. Recently Congress almost let the program expire (which would have raised rates in parts of
our area by Ten Times) but ultimately reauthorized the program to 2017. People want to live by the water, and want the Federal government to subsidize the risk. Will that continue forever? Is your Realtor part of the solution? Which leads into a third issue. You don't see very much raw land here in Broward County. We're largely built out, and overall the population of Florida has tripled since 1970. What happens now? New construction requires removing or retrofitting old structures and updating to contemporary standards. What will those standards be? Who knows enough of the right things to be able to guide you in making the right decisions for yourself and for those who follow us? Maybe a lot of people don't care. (Carpe diem, right?) But I'm betting that mindset is changing. And leading Realtors must help drive that change. WMG James Oaksun, Broward's Real Estate GeekSM, is a Realtor with the Wilton Manors office of RE/MAX Preferred. In addition to having degrees from Dartmouth and Cornell, he is a graduate of the Realtors Institute (GRI).

City Blames Pedestrians for Continued Accidents Citations issued to people after they’ve been hit by cars
Wilton Manors May Move Dog Park
By Michael d’Oliveira
By Michael d’Oliveira
After another pedestrian was hit by a car while crossing Wilton Drive, residents reiterated their demands for improved safety on Wilton Drive and other roadways. Chief Paul O’Connell said the good news is that the pedestrian, who was hit around 10 p.m. on May 24, sent to Broward General Medical Center and later released, sustained only minor injuries. “The bad news is he’s not the only one.” The pedestrian was hit in front of The Venue at 2345 Wilton Drive and cited for not using a crosswalk. Police found no fault with the motorist and did not issue a citation. Recently, two men were also hit crossing Wilton Drive at Northeast 20 Street. Because they were not using a crosswalk, they were issued a jaywalking ticket by police. The driver of the automobile was also issued a citation for an improper left hand turn. In an attempt to prevent future accidents, police here will begin a campaign this month to educate the public on pedestrian safety. Commander Gary Blocker said the first phase would involve educating pedestrians as well as businesses located on the major roadways. “The second phase would be that enforcement aspect where we would start issuing citations,” Blocker said. O’Connell implored residents and visitors to use the crosswalks. “Use them. Use them.” But the residents who spoke at the May 26 commission meeting said the existing crosswalks are not enough. More crosswalks, they said, needed to be added on Wilton Drive as well as Andrews Avenue and Powerline Road. “This is a conversation we need to have. This is not a walk friendly city,” said resident Jake Valentine. “How many more lives or
potential lives are going to be lost?” asked resident Doug Blevins. “Don’t abdicate your duty, folks,” he told commissioners. Paul Rolli, president of the Central Area Neighborhood Association, suggested increased police patrols, temporary signs, and that more jaywalking and speeding tickets be issued. “It’s not one. It’s both [pedestrians and drivers].” Commissioner Tom Green said city officials would be meeting with Florida Department of Transportation [FDOT] officials in a couple weeks to address concerns. Wilton Manors officials say they are also working with Fort Lauderdale to reduce the number of lanes on Powerline Road from four to two as well as add bike lanes and improve landscaping. Among the items discussed with FDOT will be the possible narrowing of Wilton Drive from four lanes to two, painting the speed limit directly on the street and moving the crosswalk signal in front of city hall a few feet south to Northeast 20 Street. According to FDOT officials, the signal in front of city hall was not placed at Northeast 20 Street because engineers believed it would be used more frequently at its current location. Resident Kate Donohue said when she’s used it the signal takes too long to work. “No wonder people jaywalk.” But while commissioners promised more action, they also said people need to take personal responsibility and use the crosswalks. “If we put 10 more [crosswalks] in it’s not going to make a difference,” said Vice Mayor Scott Newton. Mayor Gary Resnick said people will continue to jaywalk, no matter where the signal is placed, if it’s more convenient. “You cannot change human behavior,” Resnick said. WMG
When commissioners voted to purchase two residential lots adjacent to Hagen Park they had no plans to develop them. Now the lots, located on Northeast 21 Drive, may be used for a new dog park. Patrick Cann, Leisure Services Department director, said city officials were looking at every city park to see which area is best suited for a dog park. The dog park is currently located within Colohatchee Park. “I don’t know that we will move away from Colohatchee. I still think it has the most room. There have been inquiries from residents about putting dog parks in different locations.” Cann said the advantages and disadvantages of each possible site will have to be weighed, such as the park’s proximity to residences. If the Hagen lots were chosen for a new dog park they would be between two residential buildings. Many other cities in Broward, such as Oakland Park, Tamarac, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach, have dedicated dog parks that are not surrounded by residences. The commission voted to purchase the two properties in October of 2013 for $390,000. In early 2014, the multi-unit buildings were demolished for $13,000. The money was taken out of the reserve fund – $3.4 million before the purchase. Vice Mayor Scott Newton and former commissioner Ted Galatis voted against the purchase. Most residents who spoke at the commission meeting were against the purchase, saying that the money should have been better spent on existing parks or not spent at all.
Those who supported the purchase, Mayor Gary Resnick, Commissioner Julie Carson and Commissioner Tom Green, said the city had an opportunity to acquire land that could be used to expand Hagen Park in the future. Cann said that even if the Hagen lots aren’t chosen the city is looking at ways to beautify them. Dog litter stations are also being considered for some of the existing pocket parks, possibly funded by private individuals or companies. “We’re being more pet friendly,” Cann said. Dog park users interviewed by The Gazette seem fine with the dog park’s current location. At least two think it should probably be expanded to take up more of Colohatchee. “It’s really just a waste of space. You never see kids play [on the playground]. You never see anyone playing volleyball,” said Fort Lauderdale resident Tony DeMarco. At the May 26 commission meeting, resident Boyd Corbin called for the city to assign a dedicated park ranger as a means to stopping individuals from using the park for sex. In recent years, the park has gained a reputation for such behavior, either inside the bathroom or, in some cases, on the boardwalk. Cann said the park is already monitored on a daily basis. “The maintenance staff goes through several days per week and a park ranger goes through and closes the park every evening.” WMG

Medical Examiner Classifies Bartender’s Death a Homicide
Henry Vidal
Norm Kent
Henry Vidal, a popular 32-year-old Wilton Manors bartender, was laid to rest on Monday, June 1, in Pembroke Pines, following a solemn funeral mass and service at St. Edward Catholic Church. Less than twenty-four hours later, the Broward Sheriff’s Office reported the results of the medical examiner’s autopsy from last Friday. Authorities have now officially classified the death as a homicide, and a criminal investigation has begun. Vidal, born and raised in Hialeah, had been living in a Wilton Manors apartment at 578 Northeast 20th street, where his body was discovered last Thursday, May 29, by a co-worker. The colleague went to the location after Vidal failed to appear for his shift at B. Bar. He had worked as a pourer there, and previously at the Alibi. Wilton Manors police officers responded to what was considered a medical call and found Vidal dead. They requested the assistance of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. BSO investigates all homicides in the city, per an agreement between the agencies. Initial reports published online and in social media had prematurely described his death as a murder, while at the time BSO would only call it a ‘death investigation.’ Nevertheless, community concerns were raised almost immediately as police investigators cordoned off the area with yellow and black crime scene tape, and began questioning neighbors and colleagues. While some close friends admitted that Vidal had some "past drug and personal issues," they did not interfere with the outpouring of love upon his loss. Born on December 14, 1982, to
parents, Enrique Vidal and Caridad Labarta, Vidal had two sisters and a slew of friends who posted loving tributes to him online, along with sharing their feelings to SFGN. A long time friend, Howard Glantz, a local businessman, first met Vidal over a decade ago, when Henry moved to Chicago to attend the Harrington School of Design. Glantz stated that He was "saddened by Henry's passing... It makes me realize that we, as human beings.. need to share, communicate, and love more than we do. Henry did this more than anyone I have known." Ron Cox added, "a beautiful angel you have now become... Your love and generosity to your teammates will never be forgotten." A local realtor, Joe Gutierrez, posted a comment online simply stating that Henry "was the kindest person ever." John Lazar, a dear friend, posted a lengthy and glowing tribute to Vidal on his Facebook page, reading that "I will never forget those beautiful eyes and his fantastic smile ....... Henry is truly the most beautiful man I've ever known In so many ways...his charm, smile and wit illuminated so brightly...." The only known police incident involving Vidal occurred on March 21 of this year, when he was involved in a domestic disturbance with his former partner. Vidal called the Wilton Manors police to remove his roommate from the household, complaining the relationship had soured. Vidal, however, was told that he would have to start an eviction proceeding. The situation was resolved without further incident, and his former partner eventually moved out.
Anyone with additional information about this homicide can contact Det. Ricky Libman at (954) 3214210 or report anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers of Broward County at (954) 493-TIPS (8477) or online at www.browardcrimestoppers.org. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

elcome to The Queer Query's first issue. What you will find ahead is a collection of pieces by folks all across the rainbow spectrum, and we encourage readers to keep an open mind. We have included lesser known sexualities and gender identities into our anthology, many of which aren't immediately recognizable to the mainstream gay community. For this reason, we have included resources at the end of most articles, and a terminology page for readers to crosscheck. At our core, we are a youth-driven outlet for queer voices. Our content is written, designed, and ran by teenagers and young adults in the LGBTQ plus community. We aim to control our own narratives. We aim to share accurate perspectives of our stories, as told by the storytellers themselves. And finally, we aim to spread empowerment for our fellow queer kids. We are the embodiment of the millennial shift. For most of us, not a single state allowed marriage equality when we were first brought onto this planet. Not a single queer person could serve openly in the military. DOMA was still in effect. It's the year 2015, and now more than 70 percent of the nation live in a state where people can get married regardless of gender. We have struck down DADT (Although work still needs to be done for our transgender siblings), and the Supreme Court will vote this June on a final marriage ruling. Half of our generation recognizes gender is on a spectrum, and our stories are getting represented on mass media more often than ever. Our president is the first to openly support LGBT people while in office, and the first to openly address us on the State of the Union address. (Along with the word Instagram. Next goal: asexuality, perhaps.) We have seen openly gay and lesbian prime ministers take office

as world leaders. We have seen openly queer musicians, actors, and artists take their places as public role models. We have seen kids our own ages become leaders in various movements. Every single one of us is important. Don't ever believe that you, dear reader, cannot alter the events of history, or be the tide bearer of change. Apathy is an ugly tool people use to numb us. People will tell us we're superficial, vapid, or not socially aware. Reducing us to caricatures is what's used to disempower us. We aren't going to be suppressed. Don't ever stop being skeptical. Don't ever stop raging. Most importantly: don't ever stop fighting. We were born from the information age, and that's what we'll uphold. We will fight against biases floating around aimed to distort our ideas, or our existence. We wish to thank our associates, South Florida Gay News and Compass Gay and Lesbian Community Center, for creating a collaboration opportunity for the talented young minds who participated in this project. We wish to give gratitude to our writers, artists, photographers, and beyond. Finally, we wish to thank our readers. Much thanks to you for picking up this paper, whether out of curiosity or intrigue, and investing time on our mind space. Indifference is the active form of destruction, after all. Without thought, we’re static. Without action, we’re dead. Sincerely, Jae Kanella Markis Editor-in-Chief of The Queer Query soflagaynews Page 1 • June 3, 2015//

GENDERQUEER POLITICS A Gender Not Listed Here
X
e, xem, xir. Ve, ver, vis. They, them, theirs. All of the above are gender neutral pronouns. According to Fusion’s Massive Millennial Poll, which polled 1,000 people between the ages of 18 and 34, found that 50 percent of millennials felt that gender was actually a spectrum, and that some people fall outside conventional categories. The westernized concept of two genders is an outdated one. Throughout history, many cultures have found gender as non-static, like the hijras of India. The Ashtime from Ethiopia. The Sekrata from Madagascar. The Muxhe from the Zapotec people of the Oaxacan peninsula. Even Native Americans had their own concept: Two Spirit. Richard O’Brien, creator of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” identifies as non-binary. Ruby Rose, actor for the upcoming season of “Orange is the New Black,” came out as genderfluid. Even Miley Cyrus is speculated to identify outside of the gender binary, although she doesn’t officially use a label to identify herself this way yet. Gender is not static, and to treat it like two polar labels - one or the other, with no room for exploration - is ridiculous. Gender-neutral pronouns allow us to respect individuals who identify outside of the gender binary, who may or may not want to use gendered pronouns for their everyday living. Some of the writers for this newsletter use they/them and ze/zem, for example. When one takes out biological sex out of the equation, and takes gender identity as the marker of a person alone, the plausibility of genders beyond man or woman start to make sense. Biological sex is the body a person is born with, whether that’s male, female, or intersex. Chromosomes are unchangeable at our current state in science, but that shouldn’t stop one from transitioning, if that is one’s wish. Full transition isn’t always necessary for those who identify in between genders, or regardless of gender. It is personal to the individual, and many experience dysphoria regardless of plans to transition, or not. Dysphoria is the dissatisfaction and distress of one’s body image. Dysphoria occurs when one’s gender is not acknowledged or respected for the gender that they wish to be seen as. For many non-binary and transgender folk, this drives them to come out socially - with updated names, preferred pronouns (not always gender neutral), changing their outward presentation to masculine, feminine, or androgynous (although not required!), and allows them total autonomy with their identity. So, is it necessary? Is this separate category redundant when one could identify as simply “gender non-conforming” with their birth gender? Many simply can’t be ID’ed as their birth gender in peace, because it still feels wrong. Non-binary gender identities are as real as the people who self-identify that way. Gender is the intuition, the instinct, and the essence of an individual, and how they fit into society. Gender is a social construct, but a very active one. The segregation of gender norms are shown to be more damaging than helpful, as shown by Jody L. Herman, Williams Institute Manager of Transgender Research, and her Gendered Restrooms and Minority Stress report. In 2008, the National Center for Transgender

Equality (NCTE) and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (the Task Force) launched a nationwide study of anti-transgender discrimination in the United States. Twenty percent responded by saying their gender was fluid, with part time as one gender, part time as another, and 13 percent responded with a gender not listed in the study. In a later survey that went into more depth of those 13 percent that identified as A Gender Not Listed Here, the survey found that these individuals were faced with more discrimination, even within the transgender and general LGBTQ community. Intersectional exclusion within a movement causes erasure, and thus, destroys the foundation of a safe space for all. We must emphasize inclusion. Segregating the movement because others seem more “radical” is never a proper excuse. For even those within early LGBTQ history seemed radical, once upon a time. The umbrella term for these gender rebels is usually genderqueer, or non-binary. These individuals have an entire diversity within and outside of gender. For example: Bigender people, who may identify wholly as a girl for a period of time, while they may identify as a boy another day, month, or year. Or even no gender as a default, and then switching into binary genders at any time. (Though the label demi boy and demi girl is a more fitting description for this.) Agender people don’t identify as any gender, but may express themselves masculinely, femininely, or in a gender neutral way. Gender fluid individuals feel that their gender fluctuates, and may not always be pinned down as a specific one. There are a dozen other non-binary gender identities other than this. These individuals don’t use their identity as a political statement most of the time, but for many on the transgender spectrum, simply existing makes them a political statement. Whether voluntarily or not. We must not turn away fellow queer folk from the mainstream community, simply because they seem “out there” binary-wise, or radical for simply embracing themselves. Going beyond constricting gender roles creates an enlightened society. When equality for all genders becomes indiscernible, not only in wage gaps, but also through double standards, like destructive body images or “pink tax” - only then will we all be equal. This includes both gender binary folk who are proudly comfortable with themselves, and non-conforming folk who should equally feel comfortably proud in their own skin. Gender-neutral pronouns do not destroy gender, nor undermine it. They are tools to enhance it. Gender variance is a beautiful thing. S
o, the LGBTQA scene is pretty great. People who have experienced being stereotyped and criticized by others tend to be accepting and empathic people. Unfortunately, sometimes even queer people are guilty of assuming certain things about asexuals, and may altogether exclude them from safe spaces because of these stereotypes. Hopefully, hearing from a living, breathing asexual can eliminate some misconstrued rumors and stereotypes. Do asexual people date or get married? Certainly! Not feeling sexual attraction does not mean that it is impossible to have romantic feelings for someone, nor does it hinder an individual’s ability to. Sexual attraction and romantic attraction do not come in a battery back; being asexual does not mean that you are aromantic (not romantic), and vice-versa. Sex is not necessary for every relationship. Are all asexuals inherently repulsed by sex? In simple terms, much like people who experience sexual attraction, asexuality is best described as a spectrum, and not
QUEER QUERY feature
Asexuality explained one person is the same as the other. According to an online survey conducted in 2014, 55 percent of people who identify as asexual are sex repulsed, 30 percent are neutral, and 15 percent are positive, meaning that they are open to and not bothered by intercourse. These three labels are also open to interpretations. Short answer: No. Is asexuality synonymous with celibacy? This question, as well as many others regarding asexuality, assumes that not only is being asexual a choice, but that all asexuals are abstinent; neither of these are true. I enjoy holding hands and kissing, but I have no desire to have sex. Am I ace? From how it sounds, that seems to be the case, although you are the only one who can give yourself a label. There are different forms of attraction experienced by the human body. Desiring intimate physical contact that isn’t sex is called sensual attraction (an appeal to the senses), and it is
completely normal to experience other forms of attraction (romantic, platonic) and still identify as asexual. Now that you know a little more about the A in LGBTQA, hopefully you’ll see us as people who are just as valid as you are. Getting a better understanding of a group of people, even just learning their jargon, helps them feel so much more welcomed. So yeah, sexuality can be complicated, and for some, asexuality is somehow even more mind-boggling. No fear, buddy; you'll be an Ace pro in no time!

THREE’S COMPANY
A Brief Introduction to Polyamory
W
hat is polyamory? The word polyamory comes from the root words poly, meaning many, and amor, meaning love. A polyamorous relationship is a relationship that is composed of more than two people. Polyamorous relationships come in many forms and dynamics. It can be between one male and multiple females, one female with multiple males, a mix of genders and individuals all dating one another, or anything in between. The dynamics in a polyamorous relationship differs from relationship to relationship. In some cases, it could be one straight male with multiple straight women, a straight man with bi women, a lesbian woman with multiple females, or any combination one can think of. The dynamics for a polyamorous relationship can go many different ways depending on the orientations and genders of the people involved. What’s the difference between polyamory, polygamy, and swingers? Polygamy is when one person is married to multiple people. It is not yet legal in America to be married to more than one person at a time. Being married to more than one person is known as bigamy and is illegal. A polyamorous couple may have a marriage ceremony or a commitment ceremony, but not get legally married. Some couples are okay with just that, and stay in a simply non-official status. “Swingers” are when a couple openly has sexual intimacy with people outside of their relationship. How do you make a polyamorous relationship work? Having more than one partner has difficulties in itself.
Robin S.Y. Making a monogamous relationship work depends on open communication and trust, and the same applies to nonmonogamous relationships. In a polyamorous relationship, you have more people that all need to work together to make the relationship work. Everyone involved in the relationship needs to put in effort. Everything that you need in a monogamous relationship, you absolutely need in a polyamorous relationship: trust, honesty, intimacy, communication, addressing issues such as jealousy, differences, and building through general issues with each other. So, what do you do if you think you might be polyamorous? The only way to know if polyamory is for you is to try it. Experiment, and see if it works for you. The first relationship you get into may or may not work out, just like any relationship. If you develop jealousy, that’s something you need to work on. It is not uncommon for a polyamorous relationship to have jealousy in it, but if you have trouble sharing partners, polyamory may not be right for you. There are many ways to get into a polyamorous relationship. Many turn to online dating, and websites like PolyMatchMaker and BeyondTwo cater to these communities. Check to see if there are local groups in one’s area specifically for polyamorous people. Or just ask someone, for one never knows if another would be willing to consider adding another person to their relationship. In conclusion, whichever path one takes – just like in any relationship – be safe and consensual. soflagaynews Page 3 • June 3, 2015//

An interview with Dr. Jourdan Laine Howell
Mariah Rivera and J. Kanella Markis
W
hat is Palm Beach Opera?
What were the reactions you received?
We’re a non-profit organization dedicated to producing live opera at an international standard of excellence. One major goal of ours is to enrich the life of the communities we serve, by offering a diverse selection of educational programs. Tell us about yourself, and your position. I’m Dr. Jourdan Laine Howell, Education and Community Engagement Manager at Palm Beach Opera. My job is to oversee educational opportunities in the community, such as PBO Studio or Opera 101, and to develop new programs that we think are needed in our community. What is Opera OUT Loud? My future. (Laughs.) It’s a project that uncovers real world connections between opera, and the LGBTQ community. At its core, Opera OUT Loud will catalogue thought-provoking work, will link LGBTQ-youth to affirming industry professionals, and offer those who participate a meaningful connection to the world of opera. Outcomes of that will be raising awareness about social issues addressed in the libretto readings, or find ones that should be addressed. How does it all work? Opera will be the vehicle for dialogue, essentially. The primary component would be doing libretto reads with LGBTQ youth. That’s the kicker. Otherwise, it’s database for LGBTQ industry professionals, and their stories. The active component is you. It matters to us so much, what the youth think. It’s important to make sure that everybody is aware of the connections that they might have, and that their stories could be told through opera. The spotlights of LGBTQ libretto readers will also be a venue to study and discuss. It will always be 100 percent youth-focused. How would you describe Opera Out Loud in three words or less? Exhilarating. Youth-driven. Overdue.
I had a meeting with Leah Wilson, who oversees education for Opera America - one of the largest service operations for opera companies in North America - and she was so excited by the fact that the genesis of this project came from a conversation with a youth learner. She told me: “Oh my goodness, how has this not been done before?” Everyone’s shocked by how this isn’t a thing yet. It’s long over-due. What do you have in the works? There’s this incredible work that debuted last September, called “As One.” You know what’s killer? I got in contact with the composer Laura Kaminsku and librettist Mark Campbell, who created an opera based on filmmaker Kimberly Reed's life. Before she transitioned, she considered herself the “golden child” in high school - star quarterback, valedictorian, and so on. She transitioned in college. “As One” is based on her story. If you guys choose that, it will be such a brilliant work to start with. Where did you find the inspiration to create this program? You could definitely reference yourself right here. A group from Compass GLCC(Gay and Lesbian Community Center) was attending Opera 101 for “Enemies: A Love Story.” During intermission, I checked up on the youth to see what they thought. Mariah Rivera mentioned that the musical was decent, but it was heteronormative. It wasn’t relatable. This was a new term for me. I looked this up online before I went to bed. And later, when I woke up… You know people in the movies, after they have an epiphany, and jolt out of bed with their eyes wide open? It was like that. I walked away from that performance thinking to myself: “Well, opera is very heteronormative, isn’t it? But throughout history, gender variance and sexuality found itself in theater. Pants rolls, women who played in the roles of men. Castrati, men singing for female roles, and beyond. Gender bending has been around since the beginning of time. There’s such a deep history, already known to us. Opera OUT Loud came to me immediately. It was kismet. (Arabic, Turkish, and Urdu for “fate”.)
What could this become? It’s a pioneer program. I imagine that it’s going to have national scope. A community linker, of sorts. We want to give the youth a voice. If everyone gets on board, which I think they will - if national opera companies adopt this model, it could become a national movement.

CONDO ZODIAC:
MY CELESTIAL JOURNEY
A gender neutral short story
QUEER QUERY short story
Rodrigo Mendez
Author’s Note: Rodrigo is the type of author who wants zir audience to enter zir world, and enjoy what it has to offer. Ze uses a gender-neutral method to make sure anyone can relate to the narrator, of any gender identity. With the use of gender neutral pronouns, the reader will venture into this new world, and will not be tied to zir objective view. Gender-neutral pronouns are for those who don't identify themselves as either male or female. Rodrigo is using gender-neutral pronouns for the celestial zodiac signs, such as this Aries story. A guide to genderneutral pronouns for this story, for those unfamilliar with them: Ze is He/She, Zem is Him/Her, and Zir is His/Her. With gender-neutral pronouns, the reader can feel as attached to the zodiac encounters just as the narrator does as this story. Rodrigo wishes you all to enjoy this short story that ze created for you.
I
am wanted. By zem. Ze won me over as if I were some prize. This Aries entity is the first partner I take to bed where I’m self-aware. Self-aware of what, you ask? The first time I am self-aware of this experiment I started in my head: Which zodiac is the best in bed? I just realized I am still near zirs apartment. How I got here is none of my concern, but getting out of here alive is my first priority. All I remember was being harassed at the club by some stranger who wouldn’t stop following me. The stranger got mad because I didn’t dance with him, and he started to touch me. Then ze came to my rescue like a knight in shining armor. Well, actually, in a red plaid shirt, black skinny jeans, and some nice kicks. Ze had short, red, spiked-up hair, a defining jaw line, and domineering eyes. Within moments, ze punched the stranger harassing me. In one second, everyone turned around to see what had happened. The world stopped, and the spotlight was on me, the stranger laying flat on the ground, and ze. Ze grabbed my hand, and we ran out of the scene. We could hear the stranger getting up, and chasing us through the crowd. Lucky for me, my knight of the night knows the area, and we ended up in some parking garage. The stranger couldn’t find us now. “Thanks for saving me and all, but I should get going home.” I told zem. As I started to walk away to look for an exit in this dark garage, ze grabbed my hand again. “Let me give you a ride home. You look a little too tipsy to find it on your own,” ze says to me. “I don’t want to put you through so much. I will just call a cab, and-” As I was suggesting this, ze shut me up by kissing my hand. “I want to take you home,” ze interrupted me. I was a little bit tipsy, and by the feeling ze was emitting, there looked like no way I could have gone home by myself. “Where is your car?” I asked. “On the second floor. There isn’t an elevator, so let’s go through the stairs.” As I walked towards the stairs, ze picks me up and carries me all the way to zir car. Ze places me there as if some trophy ze won. The drive is silent. We end up at their apartment, located within some strange building on the first floor. The building was so dark. “Just follow me. I know this place by the back of my hand.” I am making all these weird turns, and we suddenly stop. Ze lets go of my hand, and I feel all lost in this dark room, and I can’t see anything. I am standing still, being cautious.
“Okay, this isn’t funny. I want to go to home and sleep.” As I am saying this, ze suddenly pushes me with all of their force and I fall onto a bed. Ze gets on the bed and turns me around, before covering my mouth with zirs gentle fingers. “There is no reason to sleep yet. If you’re looking for humor, I will make you laugh.” Ze overwhelmed my senses all at once, in a delightful way: ze started kissing me, stopping in between to blow raspberries on my stomach, and then tickling me. All three made me laugh. As I was laughing, I noticed my clothes were falling beside us on the floor. Ze must have done this while distracting me. Out of nowhere, I hear this loud bell ring. It chimed three times. Magic happened within that timeframe, and the rest isn’t to be discussed. Now I am there on their bed, and it's 12:34 p.m. I felt sore, yet rejuvenated. I looked at them. Ze has such a beautiful mouth, and a nice build from top to bottom. I thought I won the jackpot. I would have stayed a little longer, except zir apartment intimidated me. Ze has a shelf with all the trophies ze won since kindergarten, for almost every main sport. One for basketball, soccer, football, baseball, tennis, hockey and many more. Zir gym equipment was all over the place. Although, zir desk looked like it is in good condition. The trashcan was filled with protein shakes, and ingredients to make protein shakes. All this protein they took paid off, for they have a perfect, lean build. Ze isn’t some muscle head who looks like the thumb on your hand. If I were to have some sort of relationship with this person, I would probably be a health nut. Maybe in better shape. I am at the peak of their mountain right now, zirs habitat, and I have to climb back down. I must leave quietly, to prevent a single rockslide from happening around me. I cannot get attached. So I left the apartment while they were in the shower, and I got a cab to take me home. Which I thank you for, by the way. Thank you for listening to me, kind cab driver. Even though you’re not speaking. Rough day? Just as I thought I left the mountain safe and sound, I got a text that caused a huge avalanche in my psyche. Let me read it aloud to you. ‘Last night was magical here at my place. Next time you leave, I want a goodbye kiss from you, doll face. Stay safe and don’t get hurt. SELF CARE TIPS FOR MENTAL HEA LTH
QUEER QUERY health
Jae Kanella Markis
H
ere is a reference guide for those who suffer from mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and self-harm. We don’t cover tips for all mental health conditions unfortunately, and we may not be the most comprehensive, but we hope to give some helpful advice regardless! We must disclaim that we are not health professionals, however, so please act with your own discretion. First, let’s start this off by saying: It takes bravery to admit that you have an issue, and even more so to reach out. To those that are suffering: it is not your fault. My heart goes out to anyone who doesn’t have the resources they need to treat their mental illness properly. Asking for help is braver than suffering in silence. Just remember: you are not your illness. It is a significant part of you, yes, but you are so much more than that. Here’s all of my love. Tips for those with anxiety: Look up coping strategies for panic attacks, and how to recognize when you’re having one. It’s usually recommended to stay where you are, focus on something non-threatening, visualize inwardly, and use breathing techniques as a coping mechanism. If you have one while driving, please pull over for your safety. Recognize your triggers, and avoid them until you’re ready to work through them. Disassociate with anyone who forces you to confront a phobia when you’re not ready. Simply “facing the fear” head-on with no preparation won’t make it go away. This will likely traumatize another human being. If you take medication, make sure that you take it as prescribed. If you ever find yourself panicking over medication complications,

imagined or not, use Web MD’s medication complication tool to assure yourself that your doctor did not make a mistake. Allow yourself to take breaks from your environment, as needed. Tell friends ahead of time if you have a signal, so that they can get you out of a situation that overwhelms you in public or makes you extremely uncomfortable. Limit intake for caffeine or alcohol products, since either could trigger anxiety symptoms if taken in large amounts. Tips for those with depression: Make sure to take your medication as prescribed. Download apps that remind you to take pills. Even if it’s a birth control app. Do whatever you can to constantly take your medication. That’s supremely important when it comes to managing this illness. Reward yourself verbally whenever you accomplish something, whether big or small. “Hey, I didn’t complete everything I wanted to do today, but I showered and got dressed this morning. That’s fucking awesome.” Or even: “I survived this long, and I want to see myself break the record tomorrow.” You will have bad days, but this doesn’t detract from the progress you’ve made through all of the months or years. People with depression are more likely to suffer from insomnia. For my fellow insomniacs out there: try melatonin. If getting regular sleep is a constant battle, absolutely visit your doctor. Aim for eight hours if you can, but if not, take some power naps throughout the day! Challenge negative thinking. Journal any negative thoughts that may overwhelm you, and challenge them with statements that affirm your positive traits. (No, seriously. Do this, folks.) Our mind plays tricks on us when we’re down in the dumps. We become convinced that the world hates us, or pities us. You mustn’t allow yourself to go down that path. Challenge your negative thoughts. Practice relaxation techniques, and give yourself some well-deserved TLC. When you have depression, doing simple tasks or activities takes more energy to complete than someone who doesn’t suffer from it. It’s absolutely vital to unwind, and do something soflagaynews //
to clear your mind at the end of the day. Whether that’s from yoga, having bubble baths, watching cute animal videos, or anything that involves R&R for yourself, definitely do it. Reach out to people you trust when it gets too rough. Vulnerability is terrifying, but your mental health is more important than any embarrassing discussions you may have. You’re a human being, and you exist. Don’t ever shy away from existing. You have a right to be on this planet, and you’re human like the rest of us. Reach out to someone. Tips for those with eating disorders: Surround yourself with body-positive images, media, and role models. Most trans people suffer from dysphoria because their gender identity doesn’t match their outward appearance, but in this case, many people with eating disorders have dysphoria that stems from their body not matching their own sense of self. Unlike transgender issues though, transitioning to one’s desired weight cannot help someone with an eating disorder. Encouraging destructive body images will kill a human being. Challenge the negative thoughts you’ve been raised under, challenge all of the double standards society holds against your body, and learn to love it despite all of its perceived flaws. Relapses don’t make you a bad person, and it doesn’t detract from everything you’ve accomplished so far in your journey to body positivity. Have relapse prevention plans in place for the bad days, and don’t beat yourself up too badly if it happens. If you cannot get yourself to eat three full meals, try to eat six smaller meals throughout the day. Make sure they’re nutritious, and full of fiber. Your metabolism slows down when you starve yourself, and can actually force one to gain more weight. People don’t believe boys can have eating disorders, but that’s a fallacy. Boys, make sure you give yourself credit for all of the hurdles you face as a eating disorder survivor. We’re proud of you! Finally, I want you all to grab a hat, a pen, and some pieces of paper. For a week, I want you to add small traits you like about yourself, silly jokes, or funny stories that have happened in the past. Then, when you’re feeling down, open it up and visualize on it.
SouthFloridaGayNews Page 6 • June 3, 2015
You may not be happy with your current progress, but self-love is the purest love. Tips for those who self-harm: Self-harm can be a way of coping with life stresses, but it isn’t the only way. It may help you express feelings you can’t put into words, distract you from emotional pain, or release pent up emotions. But you can get there without hurting yourself, if you’re willing. If you’re ready to take the next step, read further. From the website, www.HelpGuide.org, and their article about coping strategies: “If you cut to express pain and intense emotions: Paint, draw, or scribble on a big piece of paper with red ink or paint. Express your feelings in a journal. Compose a poem or song to say what you feel. Write down any negative feelings and then rip the paper up. Listen to music. If you cut to calm and soothe yourself: Take a bath or hot shower. Pet or cuddle with a dog or cat. Wrap yourself in a warm blanket. Massage your neck, hands, and feet. Listen to soothing videos based on nature sounds. If you cut because you feel disconnected and numb: Call a friend, take a cold shower, hold an ice cube in the crook of your arm or leg, chew something with a very strong taste, like chili peppers, peppermint, or a grapefruit peel. Go online to a self-help website, chat room, or message board.” Finally, I want to recommend reaching out to mental health communities online, ones that focus on aiding those who suffer from similar mental conditions. Recommended websites: Psych Central forums, TrevorSpace, MentalIllnessMouse on Tumblr, and Ask Alice’s Mental Health forums. Stay brave. LGBTQ CENSORSHIP IN CHILDREN’S MEDIA Theodor Kitsch

“P
aranorman,” an animated featurelength film released in 2012, boldly stood against LGBTQ erasure by showing a scene with the female character, Courtney, asking the jock out on a strongly implied date. He instead responded: “You would like my boyfriend. He’s a total chick flick nut.” Dozens of advocacy groups commended the production company, Laika, for the small step. Some shows never make it past strong speculation, or behind-the-scenes controversy. On Cartoon Network’s “Adventure Time,” the characters Princess Bumblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen are an example of this. Initially featured as former best friends in the episode “What Was Missing,” the YouTube promo channel related to “Adventure Time,” named Mathematical, speculated that there was romantic subtext between the two after the episode aired. When the video went viral, the long-running YouTube Channel was discontinued, the video was removed, and a man was allegedly fired. Introducing concepts of same sex love is significant for inclusion. Showing healthy, diverse relationships show children that their families are being represented. Future LGBTQidentifying individuals are shown that their feelings are not wrong. When “Legend of Korra” confirmed that the leading ladies entered a relationship after the series finale, thousands of fans rejoiced. The leading women, both who were the ATLAequivalent of Asian and Inuit ancestry, are named Korra and Asami. Both walked hand in hand into a spirit portal, ending the series. The creators later confirmed that they did indeed enter a romantic relationship after the series. Before they spoke out, the finale divided the entire fandom: Did we witness a ship composed of two bisexual women of color become canon, in an animated children’s show? Or did we witness a strong friendship? (Note: “ship” is a fan term for a romantic pairing in television, film, books, or other fictional media. “Canon” means anything legitimate or confirmed in an official narrative.) One of the creators mentioned on his blog: “Our intention with the last scene was to make
it as clear as possible that yes, Korra and Asami have romantic feelings for each other. The moment where they enter the spirit portal symbolizes their evolution from being friends to being a couple." The final scene parallels directly to the ending of its series predecessor, “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” where the main characters Aang and Katara stand hand in hand, before starting their own romantic relationship. This is a significant victory for the LGBTQ community, no matter how subtle. There is an unsettling erasure of LGBT people within children’s media. Opponents argue that “LGBT issues are adult issues, and exposing these concepts too early will confuse children,” but many experts find this reasoning illogical. In 2013, “Good Luck Charlie” made history by portraying the first lesbian couple on their Disney Channel sitcom. The couple portrayed were two moms, who brought over their kid for a play date. Many conservative groups attempted to petition against the episode airing. A Disney Channel spokesperson told TV Guide that the controversial episode was "developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness." After Neil Gaiman’s children’s book, “The Sleeper and the Spindle,” went under controversy for showing a princess kissing awake another princess, professionals rose against the criticism. Suran Dickson, the CEO of Diversity Role Models, said: “The ‘Sleeper and the Spindle’ simply shows that not every princess will be awoken by a prince. This helps children understand different relationships, as well as giving representation to those young people with same-sex parents and can therefore reduce bullying.” A recurring theme seems to play out: with the progression of social change, our media must slowly match with the times. Censorship occurs because of an intolerant world, but rising against it gives a greater social consciousness for our children and families. For our media is a tool for knowledge, and knowledge is power. To show that love doesn't have to follow a norm, even to young minds? That is a powerful notion.

G
ay bars are vital within our narrative. Gay bars were the forefront environments of social change, where both gay and transgender activists encouraged uprisings for our rights. Gathering places for the gay community have operated as far back as the 17th Century, where drinking establishments at least tolerated openly gay clientele in several major European cities. Throughout the centuries, gay bars were raided, but still persisted. A game changing example were the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which took place at the Stonewall Inn. Historically, the importance of these places are significant to our stories. But this leaves the question: should our safe, alcohol-centered queer spaces evolve? The Center for American Progress released a new issue brief on “Why the Gay and Transgender Population Experiences Higher Rates of Substance Use,” and what can be done to reduce these rates. Specifically, the brief mentions that an estimated 20 to 30 percent of gay and transgender people abuse substances, compared to about 9 percent of the general population. Additionally, twenty five percent of gay and transgender people abuse alcohol, compared to 5 to 10 percent of the general population. Besides that fact, many young LGBT people who aren’t old enough to drink may find themselves barred from the supportive atmospheres they need. This is especially important in areas that do not have LGBT plus community centers, support groups, or GLCC’s. Even outside of community centers, LGBT teenagers and young adults need appropriate spaces where they are safe from substance abuse.
soflagaynews Page 7 • June 3, 2015//
Another point is that substance abuse survivors need supportive spaces to prevent them from relapsing. The fact that our history seeps so deeply in the presence of bars and nightclubs makes this problem very unique to our community. The first step to working past this issue is to recognize it, and then create LGBT programs to specifically fight substance abuse. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, roughly 8 percent of all Americans use illegal drugs and 20 percent binge drink. However, when compared to their heterosexual counterparts, LGBT people are twice as likely to binge drink and five times as likely to drive while intoxicated. In South Florida, there are programs like Lambda South in Fort Lauderdale, Lambda North in Lake Worth, and The Pride Institute. Lambda North and South provide meeting space for community meetings, conferences, and communication between groups and service organizations of Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs. The Pride Institute of Florida at Fort Lauderdale Hospital provides likewise inpatient and outpatient treatment. Alternatives to gay bars and nightclubs are already growing within the country. In various cities, LGBT bookshops, coffee shops, sports leagues, and establishments are opening for the wider gay communities. In the Palm Beaches, there’s a business network meant for LGBT-friendly partners or businesses that cater to us. But as our community grows past social exclusion in the wider world, we must fight against inside exclusion of our own LGBT plus brothers, sisters, and community members. As our narrative grows, so should our safe spaces.

n the early summer of 2014, Ryn Weaver uploaded her first song to the music-streaming website, SoundCloud. The song was a collaboration between Weaver, Benny Blanco, Michael Angelakos(Of Passion Pit), and Charli XCX. “OctaHate” quickly gained the attention of big name music blogs and independent music aficionados alike. Receiving share after share and listen after listen, the song blew up and was often the pick for a summer song. When stripped down to only the lyrics – “OctaHate” tells the story of a relationship gone awry. With lyrics like: “Deep in the haze Of your love high/I used to soar on The live wire” to “From the day I saw My heart start breaking/ No one saved me,” it tells the story of love found and love lost. It some how manages to tell it in a very creative, semi-elusive way, all while staying true to the pop format, with the catchy bridge and repetitive chorus helping its adherence to the form. Where the production portion of the song comes in to play is also where the “Summer Jam” title stems from. Heavy on the synth, combined with the perfect amount of percussion, and the addition of loops and multiple layers, the song becomes light and whimsical. Thus leading you

or the latter half of 2014, the music world belonged to Taylor Swift. Her two big songs, off her “1989” album, dominated the top of the charts from September all the way to the last few weeks of December. Despite her conquering of Billboard, however, both songs exhibited two opposite, but near crippling problems. Her first number 1 single that year, “Shake It Off,” had an excellent beat and tune, but was a lyrical mess. The song’s content was juvenile, and the rap segment was bewildering to listen to. Her second song, “Blank Space,” proved to be a considerably better song word wise, but had a strange, dark tone and poor production work that made it grating to listen to multiple times. Now, Swift has released a third single off the “1989” album, called “Style.” Despite not being quite the chart smashers of previous outings(As of this writing, it is number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100), “Style” has eliminated the issues plaguing “Shake it Off” and “Blank Space.” It should be considered not only the best song off the “1989” album, but one of the best modern Taylor Swift songs to date. While not as bright as “Shake it Off,” the tone and production work of “Style” is appropriately whimsical and dream like. Also wonderfully done is Taylor’s singing, though this is to be expected. Her voice is not forceful, but still strong in tone, and is often quiet in sections of the chorus, enhancing the beat. More importantly, Taylor Swift’s lyrics, often her strongest // 6.3.2015 // SFGN.com //

to imply its “Feel-Good” status. If I had to describe it, I’d say that it’s like the Funhouse Mirror Room of music - It’s masked with the idea of fun and adventure, but can easily bring out your biggest fears in an instant. It deals with very valid emotions and plays on some peoples’ biggest fear: losing love. Along with “OctaHate,” Ryn has released an EP called Promises which consists of four songs that are as equally satisfying as “OctaHate,” and follow along the lines of lyrics that stem from genuine human emotions paired with an exciting pop-esque beat. My personal favorite is “Stay Low.” Her vibrato is the shining star of the song, and her lyric pattern - along with the arrangement of the song - is rather satisfying.

B. Gelwasser quality, are completely on point. One of the reasons she excels at this is her use of description; boys named Drew, the roles and lives of her and her rival, etcetera. As noted earlier, one of the weaker aspects of “Shake It Off” was its lyrics, which dropped many of Swift’s best qualities in favor of lines such as “Hella good hair” and “My ex-man.” “Style,” by contrast, makes excellent use of description to paint a vivid picture of what Taylor considers to be a perfect relationship. It is not one that exists, but one that would be ideal for her, a moment captured in time of blissful, idealistic love. It gives the image of two young lovers, kissing on a hill in the summer for eternity. This is helped especially by the chorus, which gives a James Dean-esque look for the hypothetical lover, and leaves her own clothing up to the listener’s imagination. Swift’s lyrics, as usual, paint a vivid picture of a relationship, one blissful moment in time to be remembered forever. Overall, this is one of Swift’s best recent songs, and easily the best song off of the “1989” album. I would highly recommend giving it a few listens, because Taylor Swift is never going out of Style.

QUEER QUERY history
Dr. Mart King's Op in Luther enly Gay Adviser K. Mathias
ayard Rustin was an American civil rights leader during the time of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous I Had a Dream speech. Little known today for his efforts in the fight for black rights, he was also openly gay.
Along with other factors, this fact limited his career in subtle ways. Rustin rarely acted as spokesperson when it came to public speeches. His part in the movement usually took place as a key adviser to civil rights leaders. His personal life came to the limelight when Rustin was arrested for homosexual activity in 1953, when sodomy was still criminalized. Rustin's sexuality and public record was criticized by fellow pacifists and civil-rights leaders. Rustin was attacked as an "immoral influence" by political opponents, from segregationists to black power activists throughout his career. He was forced to resign from organizations he once held positions in, but his importance in the movement didn’t deter. In 1956, he signed on to advise Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Gandhian-style tactics. King was organizing the Montgomery Bus Boycott back then. According to Rustin: "… I think it's fair to say that Dr. King's view of non-violent tactics was almost non-existent when the boycott began…" Rustin promoted the philosophy of nonviolence and the practices of nonviolent resistance, which he had observed while working with Gandhi's movement in India. Rustin became a leading strategist of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement from 1955 to 1968. Many black leaders were concerned that Rustin's sexual orientation would hurt support for the civil rights movement. Although Rustin was open about his sexuality, the events had not circulated as open discussion outside of civil rights leadership. For those that are curious about Martin Luther King Jr.’s thoughts on the gay community, Bayard Rustin wrote about this in his 1987 speech: “… It is difficult for me to know what Dr. King felt about gayness except to say that I’m sure he would have been sympathetic and would not have had the prejudicial view. Otherwise he would not have hired me. He never felt it necessary to discuss that
with me. He was under such extraordinary pressure about his own sex life. J. Edgar Hoover was spreading stories, and there were very real efforts to entrap him. I think at a given point he had to reach a decision. My being gay was not a problem for Dr. King, but a problem for the movement…”
Bayard Rustin understood the pressures Dr. King was facing as a leading civil rights leader, and later stepped down to relieve him from added attacks on his personal life. For example, weeks before the Washington March in 1963, Senator Thurmond produced a Federal Bureau of Investigation photograph of Rustin talking to King while King was bathing, to imply that there was a relationship between the two. Both men denied the allegation of an affair, yet opponents harassed them nonetheless. Bayard Rustin came to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s defense however, and wrote further about it in his 1987 essay: “… I don’t want you to think that Dr. King was the only civil rights leader who raised these questions. Although Dr. King had been relieved by my officially leaving, he continued to call on me as Mr. Garrow makes clear in his book, Bearing the Cross, over and over. Now this all took place around 1960; but in 1963 when the question came up whether I should be the director of the March on Washington, I got 100 percent cooperation. On this occasion, it was Roy Wilkins who raised the question. Roy was my friend. He told me he was going into the meeting to object. He made it quite clear that he had absolutely no prejudice toward me or toward homosexuality; but he said: ‘I put the movement first above all things, and I believe it is my moral obligation to go into this meeting and say that with all of your talent, I don’t think you should lead this important march. They are not only going to raise the question of homosexuality. Although I know you are a Quaker and I know you paid a heavy price for your conscientious objection, they are going to call you a draft dodger.’” His political associations with socialism, being anti-war, and gay were all factors that worked against him as a black rights activist in the 1960s. He worked behind the scenes, but was still an integral part of America’s history. After the passage of the civil rights legislation of 1964–65, Rustin focused attention on the economic problems of working-class and
unemployed black Americans, suggesting that the civil-rights movement had left its period of protest and had entered an era of politics. In the 1980s, he later became an outspoken advocate on behalf of gay and lesbian causes. He testified on behalf of New York State's Gay Rights Bill, and in 1986, he gave a speech where he asserted: “… Today, blacks are no longer the litmus paper or the barometer of social change. Blacks are in every segment of society and there are laws that help to protect them from racial discrimination. The new ‘niggers’ are gays.... It is in this sense that gay people are the new barometer for social change.... The question of social change should be framed with the most vulnerable group in mind: gay people. . .” On November 20, 2013, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In conclusion, it’s fair to say that Bayard Rustin wasn’t given the full recognition he deserved during his lifetime. Intersectional identities within a movement have a habit of being pushed aside, but these people exist. Their identities should be celebrated, and acknowledged in our history books.
soflagaynews Page 9 • June 3, 2015//
Without Bayard Rustin, the struggle for civil rights would have unfolded much differently in history. The same idea goes for our current LGBTQ movement. Without Marsha P. Johnson or Sylvia Rivera, both transgender women of color who fought in the front lines at the 1969 Stonewall Riots, where would history have ended up? Bayard Rustin represents a voice who, had he the opportunities to live without respectability politics taking a toll on his career, could have been remembered more widely in history. Bayard Rustin, we swear to you: you will be remembered. You will not be silenced, and you actions have shaped our country without a doubt. Rest in power.

A Guide
GENDERQUEER BASICS Non-Binary: An umbrella term meant for all individuals who don’t fall within the gender binary (man or woman). They may identify as gender fluid, multiple genders, no gender, or any other variant gender, which is not discernible. Genderqueer is an alternative umbrella term, but not all who are non-binary identify as genderqueer.
GENDER BASICS Gender identity: The term that recognizes the unexplainable essence that makes up a person’s gender. Doesn’t always need to relate to gender norms or society unless the individual feels comfortable to do so. Identity includes strongly felt, self-identifying characteristics that make up their place in the world, and how they interact with it. Biological sex: The term that recognizes the chromosomes an individual is born with, and may have the three known categories of male, female, or intersex. An individual cannot decide their chromosomes nor switch them medically yet, but this has no inward bearing on a person’s gender identity. Presentation: The term to refer to someone’s outward expression, unrelated to gender, sexuality, or biological sex. May be feminine, masculine, androgynous, or a mix of all. Presentation usually refers to the way that trans, non-binary, or gender nonconforming people visibly express themselves to the outside world. Take note, however: presentation doesn’t need to match to gender. (Examples: men who decide to wear makeup or dresses, and still comfortably identify as men.) Transgender: A transgender person is someone who does not identify with their birth sex, and receive dysphoria as a result of their outward appearance not matching their inside identity. Many start HRT, or undergo surgery to further their transition into their desired gender. They often wish to wear the clothing of the opposite gender to present as that gender, but not doing so doesn’t mean that their identity is “less real.” (It is important to note that transgender is not a noun, and when referring to someone who is trans, one should always use “a transgender person”, or simply “a trans person”. Never “that transgender”, or “it.” That’s dehumanizing.) HRT: Hormone Replacement Therapy. The medical therapy that many transgender people undergo. This therapy involves taking or injecting various hormones and other medications designed to help feminize or masculinize the body. Taking hormones without the help of a trained endocrinologist is not safe or recommended. Transition: The mental and physical changes that a transgender person goes through over the course of many years while becoming their desired gender. A person’s transition is often counted by months on HRT, but for some, transitioning can be a social occurrence. Many begin several months or even years before starting HRT as they adjust themselves, and make efforts to change their appearance and/or attitude. Many trans people will document their transition with photographs or videos, either to show to other members of the community or to reflect on their own progress.

Agender: The gender, which recognizes no identifiable gender for the individual, and/or a lack of one as their gender. May present femininely, masculinely, or androgynously.
Aromantic: People who lack romantic attraction, but may or may not still experience sexual attraction. Those who don’t find the need or instinct to be in a romantic relationship, and are totally satisfied with platonic and/or sexual ones. Queer: A reclaimed slur in the LGBTQ community, and an umbrella term to refer to all those who fall under the spectrum of non-heteronormative sexuality, gender, and expression. Not all who are LGBTQ wish to use this label, because in many southern states, the slur is still used to dehumanize people within our community. For those who do use it, use it respectively and do not use it for those who decline on using the label.

Bisexual: People who have a romantic and/or sexual attraction towards two or more gender identities. Pansexual: People who have a romantic and/or sexual attraction to individuals, regardless of gender. Gender is not a factor for pansexual people. Whether people identify as bisexual or pansexual is a personal decision, and to regard either as “less real” or a “on the fence” about being strictly gay is erasure. The difference between bisexual and pansexual is that bisexual could include more than two genders, but does not include all. (Examples: a bisexual, genderqueer person interested in men and non-binary folk, but not women. A bisexual man interested in women and men, but not non-binary people.) Gay Porn Through the Years A look back and a look forward
Joseph Domiter
Watching Porn. There are two kinds of gay men. Those who love gay porn and liars. My first experience with gay porn films occurred when I, young man in the 1970s, dating a guy who had a large collection of 16 mm porn films and a projector set up in his bedroom. Before getting in bed and getting it on, he would thread the film and start the projector with the movie showing on the wall. Since each of the reels were only about 8-10 minutes long, we had to get our business done fast. If not, the movie would end and we were left in the darkness with the sound of the flapping end of the film reel and a couple of hard-ons. He would rewind and rethread the movie, and then we’d start all over again. Thank god for video! The technical aspects were primitive. A production was considered top class if two cameras were used. The editing was laughable by today’s standards. And the movies were shot silently with a silly 70s disco sound track. Often voice-overs were dubbed in later. I knew a guy (very briefly) who did some of the voice-overs for porn films. He would sit in a soundproof booth, watch the film on a screen and ad-lib a series of grunts and moans interjected with low murmurs of “Oh, that feels so good.” or “Do it harder, harder.” The job was boring, didn’t pay well and he never got screen credit. But at least he could say he starred in porn films. It was a good pick-up line. Nonetheless there was a delightful innocence about those early movies. Some of the actors, poorly paid, often did it more for the fun and the drugs (they all had that stoned look in their eyes). Of course there were a lot of gay-for-pay actors and “working boys” who answered the cast calls. There were rarely any plots or stories; at best you had a “situation” (e.g. two jocks in a locker room, a guy pulled over by a cop.) that quickly turned into hot, heavy sex. There were exceptions: The 1971 gay porn classic “Boys in the Sand” with Casey Donovan has stood the test of time and is still worth viewing. It was a popular and critical success, with some comparing it to the work of Andy Warhol. With this movie gay porn came out of the closet. The opening scene of statuesque naked Donovan walking slowly out of the surf onto the beach is still one of the hottest moments in gay porn. Some critics noted that it came close to a gay version of Botticelli’s famous painting “Birth of Venus” (more popularly known as “Venus on a Half Shell”) In the 80’s the production values went up (a lot more close-ups of the action), the physical quality of the on-screen talent improved (although rarely their acting abilities), the films (now called videos) lasted more than 15 minutes and — wonder of wonders — porn was no longer silent. There were voices (or at least real live grunts)

that accompanied all the humping. There were often lame attempts at a plot or story line, but thankfully you could always fast-forward. Like every gay man, I had my favorites and after a while the video box covers began to get sticky. One of the big issues in the 80s was whether the talent would wear condoms. All the sex in the films of the 70s up until the mid 80s was bareback. There were intelligent people making arguments that condoms would detract from the “naturalness” of the screen action. At the time there was still some question on how AIDS got transmitted. Some porn producers and directors felt themselves at a competitive disadvantage if they made their boys wore condoms. And I say “boys” because much of the talent in those films were young men in their early 20s; the southern California lean “surfer” look then was the standard for the mainstream industry. Today watching those films of young, freshskinned , attractive and almost innocent looking men having wild, unprotected sex on screen is soflagaynews //
almost tragic. But I also know that at the time, many of us did not object, but instead got off on it. By the mid 80s, when the cause of AIDS was becoming clear and its impact on the health of gay men becoming everyday more visible, condoms became “de rigueur” on screen. Now the issue was how would the condom make its appearance. At first, as AIDS awareness (and safesex political correctness) spread throughout the community, porn producers tried to get on the side of the angels. They made the condom one of the key characters in the scene. Just before penetration there would be a pause in the action, the guy on top would dramatically produce a plasticwrapped condom, tear it open with his teeth, and with a lusty erotic look in his eyes, pull it over his very erect (and pre-Viagra) member, and then proceed. After a while (actually very quickly) that kind of mini-melodrama got very tedious. What became the standard was a lot of hot foreplay and oral action with nary a condom in sight.
SouthFloridaGayNews
Suddenly, just before the moment of penetration, seamlessly as if by magic, the top man’s hard member would be sheathed in plastic and the action would proceed. Watching a lot of this early porn now I am struck by how slender, if not downright skinny much of the on-screen talent was. Not that I would kick them out of bed. But by today’s standards they were pretty puny (which made their members all the larger). However by the mid-90s, on-screen talent was muscling-up. At that point steroid use was becoming common in the gay community. People with AIDS were using them, along with the new AIDS drugs, to treat wasting syndrome. I had a friend who was sick and he went from a ninety pound skeleton to a 180 gym bunny in the space of a year. (There were often other bad side effects, though). Beyond that, muscles became hot as more and more young healthy gay men began using steroids, or just simply started going to the gym. The boys in the films begin to look like they stepped out of a bodybuilding contest (or at least a hard-core gym). The next moment of progress was the DVD. At first I was reluctant to make the change, but then I discovered how to transfer all my old videos to disc and I was in business. The old videos didn’t have all the extras of the newer DVDs: the take-out shots, extra scenes, interviews with the “stars,” flubs and previews of coming attractions. But I found most of the extras rather boring. And besides they often ruined the fantasy of the film. Now there is streaming video. And there is a lot out there. Visiting some of these streaming sites, it’s remarkable what you can see. All the way from HD first-rate professional productions to amateur oeuvre done with an iPhone. And what they do. There seems to be a mega-burst of new creative energies in the gay community. The whole streaming video tool with its ability to upload has created thousands of new porn producers and thousands of new porn stars. The end of the era of super-star porn celebrity is fast approaching. Who knows? Maybe the last gay porn DVD will be gay porn version of “Sunset Boulevard.” In it an an older Matthew Rush will look into the camera and say, “I am big, the movies got smaller.” Where will all these technological progress end? I’m no technological luddite (I bought my first Mac in 1984 ) but frankly, streaming video is about as far as I am going to go. Still, a friend of mine said he looks forward to the day when we would have a device that gives us a “virtual” porn experience”—no pictures on a screen but images in your brain, along with the smells, sounds and feel of a real life encounter with the hottest men you could imagine. Actually, when you think about it that’s the way it used to be — just your hand, some lube and a good imagination.

8 Smaller-City Pride Celebrations to Discover This Summer Mikey Rox
Most of us head to our respective state’s major city to celebrate pride, or even travel to metropolitan meccas like New York, L.A., Miami, or Dallas. But across America, small cities, too, are celebrating what it means to be LGBT with all the energy and excitement of our nation’s pride powerhouses but with much more of a personal touch. If you’re interested in a lower-key denizen of diversity this summer, head to these quaint-but-queer destinations to get your gay on.
Indy Pride Indianapolis, IN, June 6-13 Circle City IN Pride presented by Pinnacle Vodka in Indianapolis, Ind., hosts numerous events throughout the year to prepare and raise funds for its annual fete — but it’s the week’s worth of parties, races, drag shows, and picnics the second week of June that are the real show stoppers. The finale of this dedicated effort to keep members of the LGBT community contributing and visible is a festival that spans a large swatch of the American Legion Mall (a dedicated green space, not a shopping center) and the Cadillac Barbie IN Pride Parade, which has expanded exponentially since its inception that featured one float, an antique truck, and a handful of walking orgs. This parade will be Indy’s biggest yet where Mayor Gregory A. Ballard will serve as Grand Marshal — the first time an Indianapolis mayor has participated. Online: CircleCityInPride.org
Albuquerque Pride Albuquerque, NM, June 7-13 You won’t have a hard time sweating out all your toxins in Albuquerque during its weeklong Pride party that kicks off with an interfaith worship service. After you remove your goody twoshoes, soak up some of that iconic Southwest culture at an art show reception for Expo New Mexico, followed by a madcap parade attended by nearly 40,000 spectators. The celebration’s climax – a full-day festival – will feature a dance club, Latin dance stage, water and play park, and car show. Online: AbqPride.com

Olympia, WA,
Hampton Roads Pride Hampton Roads, VA June 26-28
One of the more unique events that sets Hampton Roads Pride apart from other small-city parties is its Pridefest Boat Parade on the Norfolk Waterfront where local boaters can show their LGBT support by sea with a parade pennant on their vessel. Seamen from all across the area join the procession for a wet-and-wild weekend of making waves and promoting equality. If you’re more of a landlubber, keep your feet dry at the 4th Annual PrideBlock Party and Pridefest 2015, featuring a performance by En Vogue. Online: HamptonRoadsPride.org Despite being the capital city of Washington State (thought it was Seattle, didn’t ya?), Olympia broke free from its Starbucksswigging, alt-rock loving cousin in 1991 to become the state’s first small town to host its own pride celebration. Twenty-five years later, its roots in the community of 36,000 people are stronger than ever. Highlights at Capital City Pride will include kickoff night at the Onion, a local watering hole; a performance by hometown queen Alusia; and the annual parade that boasts an impressive rainbow flag that spans several city blocks, a fleet of rainbow Mini Coopers, and nearly 15,000 attendees. Online: CapitalCityPride.net
Augusta Pride 26-28
Baltimore Pride Baltimore, MD, July 25 & 26 Show Baltimore some love this summer (it sure could use it) by visiting Charm City’s annual Pride weekend – one of the oldest around at 40 years – which features myriad events, like a highheel race through the Mount Vernon gayborhood; an all-day block party featuring performances by Martha Wash, Cazwell, and TS Madison; and one last after-party at Baltimore gay nightlife staple, Club Hippo, which will close its doors for good this fall. On Sunday, head to Druid Hill Park for a relaxing afternoon at an LGBT-positive festival with food, music, crafts, apparel, and more. Online: BaltimorePride.org
Augusta, Georgia, June
With the motto “Live Out Proud,” you can be sure that Augusta Pride will be full of its signature southern charm. The weekend’s pride events get a jumpstart by Beats on Broad, the city’s largest outdoor dance party, which will take place on the Augusta Common. On Saturday, enjoy the annual pride parade procession followed by the pride festival, featuring performances by Maxine Nightingale, David Hernandez, Bebe Zahara Benet, and Victoria Porkchop. Of course, you won’t want to miss the wettest event of them all – the Ain’t Misbehavin’ Pool Party – a co-ed shindig that turns up the heat as you cool off.
Charleston Pride Charleston, SC, July
25-Aug 1
Online: AugustaPride.com
What began in the early ’90s as several small pride events – including the Louisville Pride Picnic and Pride Fair – has evolved into what’s known today as Kentuckiana Pride, a name established at the beginning of the millennium to put a wider focus on the entire region. Several shows (Mr. and Miss KPF Pageants; Bianca Del Rio: Rolodex of Hate Tour) lead up to the main event, which includes the “15 Years of Pride” parade (filmmaker Shane Bitney Crone, star of Bridegroom, will serve as Grand Marshal) and a two-day festival featuring a variety of food, entertainments, and showcases from local businesses and organizations. It’s only fitting that a city famous for its beloved Rainbow Row (a well-known block of colorful, attached homes) has an equally fabulous eight-day LGBT blowout. Charleston Pride rolls into the Palmetto State with a roller derby bout to bring more awareness to equal rights, and throughout the week revelers can take in film screenings, comedy nights, and other festivities. The culmination of the extended celebration is a parade, rally, and after-party, the latter of which features hunky gay crooner Steve Grand, Eryn Woods, DJ Trevor D, and other entertainers. This is not your grandma’s ice cream. Well, actually, it’s closer to what your grandmother had as a kid than anything else out there. All of the ice creams at Wilton Creamery are made in small batches. DJ, the ice cream chef (or as I like to refer to him, The Wizard of Ahhhs) comes up with such incredible flavors as cherry-Armagnac, saffron and apricot and cinnamon dulce de leche. He also does more traditional favorites, such as turtle, cookies and cream, a killer combo called “He’s Not Worth It” that has to be tasted to be believed. DJ creates the recipes and sample batches, then sends them out to a creamery to be created. At any time you stop in you will probably have 60 or 70 ice cream options. He’s a control freak. Well, more like a quality control freak. Everything is fresh, no ice cream is kept more than two weeks, and if he finds one ice crystal in a batch, he dumps it. In addition, DJ creates toppings you won’t find

anywhere else. The seasonal menu includes hand cut fresh fruit (some soaked in moscato), basil/ balsamic strawberries, house made maple/honey walnuts, cannoli cream and other fresh creations as well as your usual favorite various candies and cookies. There are also special sauces including a killer house-made sea salt caramel, jalapeno sauce, blue cane rum and butterscotch. They also have nearly a dozen flavors of whipped cream. If you prefer a fountain creation, try their version of a Dreamsicle; with orange, pineapple and vanilla ice cream topped with crushed pineapple and oranges. The best deal is to get a small, medium or large, cup and they’ll add as many toppings as you want for just a buck or two more. In addition to ice cream, there is also a vast array of sherbets and sorbet as well as vegan, sugar free, gluten-free and non-dairy options. They even have dog friendly ice cream.
If you thought Hershey’s was just about candy, you’re as nutty as a bowl of cashew crunch. Double Dippers is a Hershey’s ice cream franchise and features 40 flavors of ice cream at any one time. They make their waffle cones and bowls fresh every day. In addition, they’ll create any kind of sundae, milk shake, malt or banana split. Root beer and Creamsicle floats are also available. How dog-friendly is this place? Dogs always get free licks. No web site but it does have a Facebook page.
Frozen yogurt sounds healthy, so go ahead and have some. Menchie's opened its first store outside of Los Angeles, California, in, 2007. Within one year the business was a huge success and they had folks asking to open franchises. Now there are more 350 locations around the world. The success comes not only from a tasty product but also from training all employees to make your visit a pleasant experience. Also, if you want to know the nutrition information on any product, just go to the chain’s website and you will find, not only the standard nutrition label, but logos which also indicate whether a product is kosher, contains dairy, is gluten-

free or free of high fructose corn syrup. The flavors in all categories are truly mind boggling. Imagine cookie dough, monster crisp, Irish mint, fresh baked oatmeal raisin cookie, fresh shredded coconut and bananas, Greek vanilla bean, harvest pumpkin, java latte, key lime pie, peach, pineapple upside down cake, pomegranate-acai, pistachio, chocolate, salted caramel, spiced chai latte, strawberry, apple pie, berry or toasted marshmallow. And those are just the fat-free flavors! When you add in low-fat, tart sorbets, sugar free and low carb creations, the list is mind-boggling.
In a city filled with queens, Dairy Queen has been dishing up soft serve cones, sundaes and banana splits since the spot opened its Wilton Manors store in 1953. Yes I said, 1953. If they’ve been doin’ it for 60 years they must have it right! Now if only they could speed up the service, so there wasn’t always a long line.

HOMO HISTORY 101
The Tony Awards Edition – The Musicals Pier Angelo
History was never as straight as we are told. Recording our history means reporting the truth.
Musical Theatre Queens (noun,
plural): gay men enlightened enough to realize that stage musicals are the be all and end all, the ultimate cultural flowering of the human race.
Musical (noun, singular): theatrical production typically of a sentimental or humorous nature that consists of musical numbers and dialogue based upon a unifying plot. The 69th Tony Awards will be held on June 7, 2015 at Radio City Music Hall in NYC – It is the Gay Super Bowl - For gay believers, musicals are what football is to straight men. Here is a list of Tony Awards WINNERS IN THE MUSICALS CATEGORY, with references to being gay or with gay characters and gay plots. 1967: Cabaret (Kander & Ebb): After Sally Bowles unsuccessfully tries to seduce Brian, he reveals that he’s been there, done that and it’s not for him. But Sally persists and they eventually become lovers, only to be torn apart when they both realize they’ve been sleeping with rich playboy, Maximilian. 1976: A Chorus Line
(Hamlisch & Kleban): Soft spoken Paul exposes his painful past in a heart rendering monologue, his early career in a drag act, coming to terms with his manhood, his homosexuality, and his parents' ultimate reaction to finding out about his lifestyle.
1984: La Cage Aux Folles
(Jerry Herman): Audiences who would never have gone to “gay theatre” cheered for the story of a middle-aged couple struggling with homophobic in-laws. It was a breakthrough moment.
1993: Falsettos (William Finn): The story involves Marvin, his ex-wife Trina, his psychiatrist Mendel, his son Jason, and his gay lover Whizzer Brown. 1994: Kiss of the Spider Woman (Kender & Ebb): Luis Alberto
Molina, a homosexual window dresser, is in a prison in a Latin American country, serving his third year of an eight-year-sentence for corrupting a minor. He lives in a fantasy world to flee the prison life, the torture, fear and humiliation. His fantasies turn mostly around movies, particularly around a vampy diva, Aurora. He loves her in all roles, but one scares him: This role is the spider woman, who kills with her kiss.
1996: Rent (Jonathan Larson): loosely based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème. It tells the story of a group of
impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in New York City's East Village under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
2003: Hairspray
(Shaiman & Wittman): Many have speculated about whether and how Hairspray counts as a “gay” musical. Of course, there’s the John Waters provenance, the drag lead character (originated by Divine and played on Broadway by Harvey Fierstein), and the inherent campiness of musicals. But the most profound connection lies in its message of acceptance: Hairspray celebrates forbidden love in the face of “a never-ending parade of stupid.” It’s a theme gays know well.

2004: Avenue Q (Lopez & Marx): Rod is an extremely well-groomed, obsessively clean, and slightly hysterical closeted homosexual. He is secretly in love with his best friend, Nicky. Rod and Nicky are parodies of Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street. In one of the musical's most popular songs, "If You Were Gay," Nicky, who is straight, encourages him to come out of the closet. 2011: The Book of Mormon
(Parker/Lopez/Stone): Elder McKinley is one of the lead Mormon elders and the Church's current District Leader in Uganda; he is sexually attracted to men but in denial of his feelings.
2013: Kinky Boots (Jason Brown): inspired by true events, the musical tells the story of Charlie Price, who inherits a shoe factory from his father. To save the business, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen, Lola. With Lola's help, Charlie develops a plan to produce a line of high-heeled boots. In the process, he and Lola discover that they are not so different after all. 2014: Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Mitchell & Trask): is a 2001
rock musical about a fictional rock and roll band fronted by a gender queer East German singer named Hedwig. Hedwig, formerly Hansel, assumes a female persona after a botched sex change operation which was performed to allow him to marry an American man and escape East Germany. In 2014 it had its first Broadway production, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. If you want to learn more about your gay heritage and those who paved the way, through activism, sacrifice, courage and civil disobedience to give us a better and freer life you can visit The Stonewall Museum & Archives in Wilton Manors. Netflix celebrates equality with diverse, queer titles David-Elijah Nahmod
ON THE WAY TO BROADWAY
In the not to distant past LGBT people were all but invisible in popular culture, but these days are an embarrassment of riches. There are currently hundreds of feature length films, which tell LGBT stories. No matter which letter of the acronym applies to you, there are movies that will satisfy your craving to see yourself represented on the screen. Do you enjoy a good tearjerker? Like scary movies? Do you prefer true-life documentaries or serious dramas about current social issues? Then make some popcorn because your movie is starting. All you need is a Netflix account. In conjunction with Pride month, streaming media service Netflix has released Pride Guide 2015 movies that will fill you with a good old fashioned sense of LGBT Pride. Here are a few must sees:
Bridegroom (2013) As SCOTUS prepares to rule on whether or not marriage equality should become the law of the land, Bridegroom reminds us how important this issue is. This powerful documentary follows the heartbreaking story of Shane Bitney Crone, who lost his longtime partner Tom in a freak accident. Shane was not only shut out of Tom's funeral by Tom's family, he was threatened with violence — Shane and Tom had lived together for seven years. Without a marriage license, Shane had no legal recourse. Marriage isn't just a romantic notion people — we need it.
With music, comedy and a kickin’ band, Mario Cantone is On the Way to Broadway in his new show that features his irreverent humor and wickedly funny impersonations.

Orange Is the New Black (Season 3) Netflix's acclaimed in-house comedy drama about life in a low security women's prison returns for a third season. Based on Piper Kerman's memoir, the series follows a motley group of tough but kindhearted ladies as they struggle to keep their dignity and sanity intact behind bars. Piper is torn between her attraction to a male fiancé and her ex-girlfriend, who's one of her prison mates. But it's trans actress Lavern Cox and lesbian actress Lea DeLaria who steal the show — Cox plays a woman who's also a dad — she struggles with wanting to do right by her children. DeLaria is hilariously outrageous as a foul-mouthed butch dyke. TV rarely gets better than this.
Chasing Amy (1997) Kevin Smith (Clerks) made this somewhat forgotten charmer about a comic book artist (Ben Affleck) who falls in love with a lesbian (Joey Lauren Adams). But wait — she might be bisexual! Far From Heaven (2002) Todd Haynes film is set in 1950s suburbia — so he shot it in the style of Hollywood auteur Douglas Sirk, who filmed many romantic dramas during the 50s. Julianne Moore is sensational as a proper housewife who falls in love with her African American gardener after her husband leaves her for another man. Though presented as a tear-jerker "women's picture." “Far From Heaven” offers a great deal of insight into society's prejudices and the roles people are often forced to play. We Were Here (2011) A heartbreaking yet ultimately uplifting look back at the peak years of the AIDS crisis, which decimated the 1980s gay male community. The story is told by those who survived. There won't be a dry eye in the house as they remember the friends and lovers who were lost. Out Late (2008) A stirring documentary about LGBT identified senior citizens and their coming out stories — they all came out after age 55. A Single Man (2009) Based on a novel by gay author Christopher Isherwood, Colin Firth stars as a depressed gay man contemplating suicide after the death of his partner in 1962. The Kids Are Allright (2010) Annette Benning and Julianne Moore shine as a lovably neurotic lesbian couple who are thrown into turmoil when the sperm donor for their two kids comes into their lives. To Be Takei (2014) Lovely documentary about Star Trek's George Takei and his emergence as a gay icon. Film includes a peek inside his life with his husband Brad, and his legendary feud with William Shatner. Also available: TV series such as Glee, Queer as Folk, The L Word, and many more movies.
David-Elijah Nahmod is an American/Israeli half-breed who has lived in New York City and Tel Aviv. Currently in San Francisco, his eclectic writing career includes LGBT publications, SF Weekly & monster magazines. A survivor of childhood gay conversion therapy, he lives with PTSD: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

a&e theatre New Play Offers Powerful Argument for Marriage Equality J.W. Arnold
Antonio Amadeo, Laura Turnbull and Alex Alvarez star in Michael McKeever’s new play, “Daniel’s Husband,” at Island City Stage. I have a confession to make: I’ve always been a skeptic of the fight for marriage equality. As Massachusetts became the first to adopt gay marriage more than a decade ago, I asked myself why we would want to embrace a broken heterosexual institution. Even as marriage equality made a steady advance across the country and is now being contemplated before the U.S. Supreme Court, I still did not see the need to march down to the courthouse or—gasp!—down the church aisle when a few carefully worded documents could take care of any legal worries a marriage license might convey for me and my partner of 10 years. That all changed on Saturday night at the world premiere of gay playwright Michael McKeever’s haunting new play, “Daniel’s Husband,” by Island City Stage, the region’s LGBT-centric theater company. Daniel Bixby (Alex Alvarez) and Mitchell Howard (Antonio Amadeo) are a devoted couple, together for seven years. Like many gay couples, they enjoy dinner parties and romantic evenings alone. They are devoted to each other and deeply in love. Like most married couples, they also bicker—about marriage. Their problem is their diametrically opposed views toward the institution. Daniel, an awardwinning architect and idealist, dreams of placing a ring on Mitchell’s finger, “because I can.” He yearns for “the paper, the certificate, the rings, the honeymoon, the party.” Mitchell detests the institution, replying, “When did it become so important to the gay community to be like everyone else?” and labeling marriage advocates “insipid queens desperate to assimilate.” They didn’t “have” to marry because they had all the legal paperwork covered, at least that is what Mitchell thought. During one of their arguments, Daniel
suffers a stroke that leaves him with “locked in” syndrome, a condition in which he is completely aware and cognitive but unable to communicate with others through even the slightest twitch or blink of the eye. When Daniel’s mother, Lydia (Laura Turnbull), decides she should be the one to care for her son and sues for custody, Mitchell realizes those documents can’t substitute for an actual marriage license, let alone a ring. McKeever’s plot was jarring and certainly had to hit home with more than a few of the predominately gay men and lesbians in the audience at Empire Stage. In an instant, he plunged his characters’ lives into unresolved turmoil and, under the expert direction of Andy Rogow, offered a powerful play that will certainly be a contender for next year’s Carbonell Award for best new work. Both Alvarez and Amadeo offer nuanced performances while Turnbull had the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end as a self-absorbed mother whose motives were questionable at best. Rounding out the cast were Larry Buzzeo as Mitchell’s attorney Barry, a 40-something with a penchant for vapid twinks, and Kristian Bikic as Trip, a not-so-vapid twink who winds up caring for Daniel until Lydia intervenes. Island City Stage has been on a roll this season, with outstanding productions of Steve Yockey’s surreal “Octopus,” Douglas Carter Beane’s comedy “The Little Dog Laughed” and now, McKeever’s drama “Daniel’s Husband.” This show is certainly the company’s best since its profound production of Dan Clancy’s Holocaust drama, “The Timekeepers,” that swept the 2014 Carbonell Awards. This is a play that all gay couples—married or not—need to see. In the meantime, I’m going to sit down with my partner and discuss an important question.
Island City Stage presents Michael McKeever’s “Daniel’s Husband,” Thursday – Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. through June 28 at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Drive in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $30 at IslandCityStage.org. soflagaynews //

THE SECRET LIFE OF SMALL TIME PORN Story by Ric Reily, with Jonathan R. Nicholes
Working On Call – Gay Pornography in Orlando
H
aving a preconception can be a dangerous thing. What we know can serve to simply expose that which we don’t know, and then often in ludicrous terms. What I knew about the gay porn, modeling and escort business before researching and writing this article was very little. My preconception was that of a seedy business, one often maligned in the press and movies. In this multi part series I go behind the scenes of one small time porn company in Orlando where I visited a model house, interviewed several of the company’s actors as well as the owner. It’s important to note that this company does not represent the porn industry as a whole — it’s just one tiny piece of a multi-billion industry. For all its preconceived faults the industry has survived in its various forms throughout history and with the advent of technology and particularly the Internet, has flourished. According to a 2008 study by the Rochester Institute of Technology Internet pornography generated over $3,000, 28,000 viewers, and 400 searches, every second, every day. Every forty minutes a new porn video is created in the U.S. The U.S. is only the fourth largest consumer of porn, out sexed by China, South Korea and Japan. In that same year Internet porn generated more revenue worldwide than the top eight technology companies including Google, Apple, Yahoo, AOL and others, combined. In the U.S. porn generated more revenue than the three largest TV broadcasters, combined. Approximately eighty percent of all porn web pages are hosted in the U.S. A quarter of all Internet searches are for porn. Internet porn is big business. Conservatives are the biggest consumers of porn, eight of the ten states that consume the most porn voted for McCain. Utah consumes more porn than any other

state in the union. It is an open secret that many regular consumers of gay porn are women and straight men. Of gay men most porn is consumed by the 35-44 age group. Within that group there is a direct correlation between income and consumption with those who earn more watching more porn. Gay porn actors, actors you will meet later in this piece, perform very much in a sexual manner, even achieving a certain level of intimacy with their partners off the set; they are all gay. Some gay porn actors are straight or bi and gay for pay. They easily perform the scenes as completely not sexual but as purely mechanical. Many of the gay porn actors I spoke to enjoy their work. They feel much more an actor than a prop and their work has a positive impact on their lives. Acting in porn can be a big self-confidence boost and when you come from low self-esteem that’s a real improvement. In addition, porn requires a certain physique and getting and keeping that physique can lead to a long term commitment to health and exercise they did not have coming into the job. A real downside to the job is age. Porn acting is mostly for the young and though many are not afraid of aging they know there is an end and are happy to have had the experience while young. As one said offhandedly, “it’s fun, we don’t take things seriously at all.” How does a kid from the Midwest, or anywhere of that matter, get into porn? It’s easy if you happen to live in California where the preponderance of production companies are located. There are upwards of five hundred production companies in the San Francisco Bay Area alone. Porn actors who come from obscure out of the way places all across the country find the road to porn, modeling and escorting is much different. These kids need a manager, a guy like Uncle Tom with Orlando Models.
feature porn
UNCLE TOM — THE PORN KING For many years I have carried a clear and distinct impression of the gay porn business. I had the image of young, perhaps too young, emaciated to starving hairless pink boys lying about after dosing up until pressed in front of a camera for another shoot. The porn king was obese, grotesquely sweating and leering at the action as the boys preformed. Tom Moran, also known as Uncle Tom, with Orlando Models is the glue that keeps his whole enterprise working. On first blush he fits the preconceived porn king stereotype. Obese, in his own word, he has a baldish pate with unruly and untrimmed hair encircling his head above the ears. After fifteen years of providing magazines with photographs and more recently websites with video he looks his part. Starting with Polaroid instant photos the media has moved through various iterations, currently an HD digital file. Uncle Mike is a kind and gentle man who in all his disorganization truly seems to care for his flock and want the best for them. In a different lifetime Uncle Mike was in law enforcement. Along with Tanner, his director and producer, Uncle Tom manages a porn production company with a focus on young men in bondage scenes. A big management part of the business is acquiring the porn actors and Uncle Tom has tuned a system over the years. The real challenge with porn actors is getting them to Florida and providing them a place to live. Most arrive with little or no money chasing a dream of throwing off their old lives in pursuit of a new one chosen though not yet experienced. Facilitating the flow Uncle Tom maintains a model house, and it isn’t the best house in a new development. At any given time there are two to three porn actors in residence though often the number can grow to six. On average a porn actor will stay in the model house for about three months. After that time most have found a solid footing on which to move out or have decided the trade is not for them and returned to a more familiar place. New porn actors are instilled with Uncle Tom’s code, certain rules that establish a workable civility. Bringing in a certain type person helps establish personal caring and support by each porn actor for others. They all share
cooking and cleaning while Uncle Tom provides the food. Acquiring new porn actors is an ongoing effort for the porn king. He actively pursues social media sites, such as Facebook, and escort sites for prospects. Beginning with an instant message or email conversation he might spend a year or more communicating with a prospective porn actor before both he and the prospect are ready to meet. Prospective porn actors are those with a settled demeanor, a high level of interest in setting a new life direction, and a willingness to abide by Uncle Mike’s rules. His offer of employment includes transportation from the prospects hometown to Orlando which depending on distance is typically via air. Approximately sixty percent of those who commit to the trip actually arrive. Uncle Tom has no interest in those who are saddled with drama and he has zero tolerance for drug use or alcohol in the house. If the wrong porn actor is chosen, Uncle Tom immediately returns him to the airport and sends him back from whence he came. Ninety percent of the boy next-door type porn actors come to the model house with no experience. They are required to use condoms in all their sexual activity both on camera and off. Each arrives in Florida for a different reason though earning money is always a common theme of their lifestyle transition. Shoots pay between one and three hundred dollars. Once settled in most porn actors get additional employment dancing in clubs, webcam modeling, escorting or a typical part time job. A model house will eventually come under the scrutiny of neighbors. And neighbors are usually none too happy with what they find — as was the case with Uncle Tom’s house. In his case that anger resulted calls to the police. Even though they found nothing they still charged Uncle Tom with running an unlicensed halfway house. There have been no new problems in the past four years. No filming is done in the model house. Filming is done at a local dungeon and at private campgrounds for outdoor shoots. Shooting is done in twelve minute episodes edited to ten-minute pieces shot in one to five hour sessions. Updates are done weekly to the Orlando Models web pages BadBoyBondage.com and BadBoysBootCamp.com.
Series continues next week with part two and three. For the whole series, check out SFGN.com/PornSeries. soflagaynews //

Actor Puts Together GoFundMe Account For One Last Scene Hunter Houston A retired porn actor wants to get back to screwing, but needs a little help. Brandon Hawk recently celebrated his 42nd birthday, and to celebrate, he’s asking fans to fund a tattoo — in return he’s promised to participate in one last porn shoot. Hawk recently took to the website IndieGoGo where he reached his set goal of $1,000 for the project. He’s already surpassed his goal and said any monies raised above and beyond the $1,000 threshold he’s split 50/50 with the Pride Center at Equality Park in Wilton Manors. The design will go from ankle to shoulder, take two years to complete, and is being designed by local tattoo artist Stevie Moon. Hawk is keeping the design of the tattoo under wraps for now. Porn Pulse will monitor this on-going situation. Meanwhile, super bottom Sean Storm defended gay porn last week, writing to the South Florida Gay News that Naked Sword actor Rylan Knox’s suicide was an aberration in the industry. “I didn’t know Rylan, I’ve never seen his work. But in the 16 years that I have been actively performing in adult films, I can only recall two suicides on the gay side of the business,” Storm wrote.
Elsewhere, Brooklyn cops busted a Tea Party politician last week for possessing and sharing child porn. The New York Post reports Joseph Hayon, 37, was arrested for sharing photographs of children ages two to 12. Founder of the Brooklyn Tea Party, Haydon ran for the city council in the 44th district in 2013. He has been released on a $50,000 bail, the Post reports. And finally we continue to follow the Jarec Wentworth story. Wentworth appears to be gaining public sentiment as he sits in a California prison. A surprising 64 percent of respondents to a poll on the website Str8UpGayPorn.com voted for Wentworth’s release. The furry porn star is accused of extorting Palm Beach billionaire Donald Burns.
