Guam Recognizes Gay Marriage

Guam, an island in the Northern Pacific Ocean, is accepting marriage applications from same-sex couples. The island is a U.S. territory and because of its location in relation to Hawaii, Japan and The Philippines, a valuable strategic asset to allied overseas interests. U.S. District Court Chief Judge Frances M. TydingcoGatewood struck down the territory’s ban on same-sex marriage, telling a packed court room that it violated gay couple’s constitutional rights to equal protection under the law. Guam

Organizations Put Hookup Apps On Notice

John McDonald

A partnership between the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and a patient engagement platform is going after “hookup apps” in an effort to combat sexually transmitted diseases. Healthvana, a company designed to increase care and the circle of engagement among patients and providers, joined AHF last week to issue a statement about the underground world of cyber applications. In some U.S. states, these applications are being blamed for the rise of STDs and HIV. Noting a dramatic increase in STD cases in Rhode Island and Utah, officials at Healthvana said the common theme in half of those cases was mobile phone apps. By joining with AHF, Healthvana is seeking to reverse the hookup app methodology by delivering good news. “Today, the status quo of notifying patients of their STD test results is ‘we’ll call you if something is wrong, otherwise you’re fine.’ This anxiety-provoking and antiquated system will be replaced by technology that empowers patients with test results in real-time so they can make better

health decisions,” said Ramin Bastani, chief executive officer of Healthvana, in a press release. Almost 10,000 AHF patients have received their test results through Healthvana during the last two months. The platform, Bastani says, is the first in the U.S. to use digital means to deliver test results. “We are excited about our collaboration with Healthvana and are already seeing stunning results in folks accessing their STD results and accessing treatment more quickly as a result,” said Whitney Engeran-Cordova, a senior director of the Public Health Division at AHF.

Miami Dade Considers Decriminalizing

Small Quantities of Pot

(UnitedForCare) If passed by both the commission and by Mayor Carlos Gimenez, the new ordinance would let officers issue a civil citation to someone carrying less than 20 grams of marijuana, about two-thirds of an ounce, reports The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/1Mb0SrK) At present, misdemeanor marijuana possession is punishable by a maximum one-year jail sentence. While police have the option not to arrest someone for minor marijuana possession, the charge still requires an appearance in criminal court. However, with a civil violation, the case would not enter the criminal system. The Herald reports the plan is being sponsored

.J. Lawsuit: 'Conversion Therapy' Violates Fraud Laws (265)

// 6.10.2015 // SFGN.com //

(Metro Weekly) If a landmark lawsuit being heard this week in New Jersey is successful, it may set in motion a chain of events that would essentially upend the modern conversion therapy industry. The case of Michael Ferguson, et al., v. JONAH is the first of

by County Commissioner Sally Heyman and supported by Miami Dade police. “We helped draft and support this effort as a discretionary option for misdemeanor marijuana,” said Juan Perez, deputy director of the Miami-Dade Police Department. “This gives the option to go with a citation for those individuals that may have no record, or only a minor criminal history, [and] stay out of the criminal justice system.” Heyman’s proposal goes before the commission’s Metropolitan Services Committee Wednesday afternoon. If it passes, the full 13-member commission would take it up later in the summer.

its kind. It seeks to attack the practice of conversion therapy using existing consumer fraud laws, while also solidifying in case law that being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender is not a disorder that can be cured. Specifically, the plaintiffs, which include four former clients who underwent conversion therapy and two of their mothers, claim that Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality (JONAH) engaged in "deceptive practices" prohibited under New Jersey's consumer fraud law when they "represented to Plaintiffs that their services were effective in changing a person's sexual orientation from gay to straight." According to the complaint, which was brought by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) on behalf of the six plaintiffs, JONAH's clients were made to engage in various forms of conversion therapy that have been endorsed by leading figures in the conversion therapy movement. Specifically, the plaintiffs claim that the organization misrepresented itself by promising to be able to change the young clients from gay to straight, in exchange for treatments and group therapy sessions, including weekend retreats, which carried a price tag in excess of $10,000 a year. They also claim that, as a result, JONAH caused its former clients to suffer "depression and emotional harm" when undergoing the treatments and being unable to successfully change their sexual orientation.

Capital Pride Honors Holder

(Metro Weekly) "This is indeed, I think, a very hopeful time," former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said at the Capital Pride Heroes Gala on June 3. "But we should not kid ourselves. Much work really remains to be done. The fight is larger than the one solely for marriage equality. Discrimination against the LGBT community is still very real. It is still the basis for wrong-headed policies and dangerous attitudes. And so the fight for true LGBT equality must go on.... The struggle must continue." Holder was presented by Capital Pride with the 2015 Paving the Way Award for his courage and leadership in helping to advance LGBT rights as the Obama administration's top law enforcement official. It was Holder who refused to defend the congressionally-approved Defense of Marriage Act - better known as DOMA - on the basis that he believed the federal law to be unconstitutional. Holder also instituted guidelines

soflagaynews //

outlining how the federal government would treat and recognize same-sex couples with respect to federal spousal benefits and legal rights after DOMA was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2013. Wednesday night's well-[attended] gala, held at the stately Carnegie Auditorium on K Street NW, served as the kickoff to this year's Capital Pride celebration. "If only one person or one group is denied the full measure of our Constitution, all of us are diminished," Holder told the crowd. "All those who are committed to making real the promise of our democracy must engage on all of these fronts, on all of these fronts. And all lives, all lives matter.”

raduation Robes Gender-Neutral in Maryland School District

(AP) Out of respect for transgender students, three high schools in Maryland's Montgomery County have begun using a single color for graduation robes to make them gender neutral. The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1MhQ4rZ) reports Damascus, Sherwood and Walter Johnson High are no longer using separate colors for males and females. At least five other schools in the Washington, D.C., suburb have decided to make the change next year. Principals say letters from students played a role in the decision. There is no district policy about cap and gown colors in Montgomery County. Some schools have long had a single color for all graduates, but the dual-color scheme has been popular at others.

The

Big Story

Lindsey Graham.

This Week: Caitlyn Jenner

Lindsey Graham Wants Caitlyn Jenner's Vote (AP) Republican presidential contender Lindsey Graham says his party has room for transgender people like Caitlyn Jenner. The South Carolina senator calls himself a "traditional marriage kind of guy." But he says he "can only imagine the torment that Bruce Jenner went through" before becoming a transgender woman. He hopes that, now, she's "found peace." The underdog Republican candidate is campaigning on the need to counter

threats from terrorists and Islamic State militants. He shares the opposition to same-sex marriage expressed by his rivals but says the Supreme Court is settling that question. Graham says if Jenner wants to be a Republican, she's welcome. And he says if she wants a safe country and a strong economy, she should vote for him. He spoke Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

Jenner Invited to Headline Tel Aviv Gay Pride Parade Caitlyn

(EDGE) The City of Tel Aviv has invited Caitlyn Jenner to headline the upcoming Tel Aviv Gay Pride Parade set for June 12. Conchita Wurst, winner of the 2014 Eurovision, is also expected to take part in the largest gay pride event in the history of Asia and the Middle East, with 180,000 expected participants. Jenner has drawn international headlines while becoming the de facto face of the transgender movement for her recently revealed transition to womanhood on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine. "When I saw your interview with Diane Sawyer, I was amazed by your bravery and determinations to live your life as you choose," Yaniv WAizman, who holds the gay community portfolio on the Tel Aviv city council, said in an invitation to Jenner to lead the parade. "The fact that you provided us an opportunity to smile and revealed the personal and complex process you went through, the difficulties that stood in your way, made you a source of inspiration for us in Tel Aviv." This year's parade will be taking place under the theme "Tel Aviv Loves all Genders" promoting awareness of and equality for the transgender community. Conchita Wurst approved her participants in the parade, which organizers expect to be the largest ever, with around 180,000 people participating.

illie Jean King: Caitlyn Jenner Helps Transgender Tolerance

(AP) Billie Jean King believes Caitlyn Jenner has given people clarity about transgender issues beyond the progress already seen four decades after they shared the international spotlight as athletes. "The interview with then-Bruce Jenner, and now Caitlyn Jenner, really helped people to be clear in understanding, especially about gender vs. sexuality," the 71-year-old former tennis star said in an interview with The Associated Press. "Everybody's always getting very confused with that. Then they finally realized they have nothing to do with each other." King won the last of her 12 Grand Slam singles titles in 1975, a year before Bruce Jenner earned the unofficial title of "world's greatest athlete" by winning gold in the decathlon at the Montreal Olympics. Jenner, 65, publicly transitioned from Bruce in an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer in April to Caitlyn on the cover of Vanity Fair this week. "I am so happy he's finally going to be comfortable in his own skin; finally Caitlyn will be," King said. "It's been a long journey for Caitlyn, and I'm really happy for her." King occasionally traveled in the same circles with Jenner, given they were two of the most recognizable athletes in the 1970s. "He was amazing when he won the decathlon, so I would run into him every so often," King said. "We actually did a commercial together, but I don't think they ever showed it." King was 29 when she defeated former professional tennis player Bobby Riggs, 55, in the famed "Battle of the Sexes" match in 1973, putting gender issues in the spotlight. She later helped pros accept a transgender player in their ranks after she started the Women's Tennis Association in 1973. Renee Richards, who was denied the opportunity to play as a woman in the 1976 U.S. Open, was born Richard Raskind, a former captain of the Yale tennis team who had sex reassignment surgery. The New York Supreme Court ruled in Richards' favor, allowing Richards to join the women's pro tour in 1977. King said she called the players together after meeting with Richards for four hours and receiving confirmation

from doctors that she was a woman. "I said 'We're going to have her on the tour, so get used to it.' Some were unhappy, some were trying to figure it out. But it worked out fantastic," King said. "The players ended up loving Renee." King played doubles with Richards, who reached the U.S. Open women's doubles finals in 1977 with Betty Ann Stuart. Richards, who was also a renowned ophthalmologist, later coached Martina Navratilova and "really improved her backhand," King said. Jenner introduced Caitlyn via Twitter and soon after was named the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award for the upcoming ESPY Awards on July 15. King, who was outed as a lesbian in 1981, won the award for individual contributions that "transcend sports" in 1999. "Caitlyn's in for a whirlwind. She already has been, but it's going to be crazy," King said. "I think it's really appropriate that Caitlyn's won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award." Photo: Caitlyn Jenner, Twitter.

riner Files to Annul Marriage To Fellow WNBA Player

(AP) Brittney Griner filed for an annulment with Glory Johnson-Griner on Friday, a day after Johnson-Griner announced she's pregnant and a month after the two WNBA players married. "I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment,” Griner said in a statement. “In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake." Johnson's agent, D.J. Fisher, said in a statement that Johnson-Griner was unaware of the filing and was "extremely hurt and blindsided" by Griner's actions. Griner, the 6-foot-8 Phoenix Mercury star, married Johnson-Griner on May 9, three weeks after they were arrested on domestic violence charges for a fight at their home in suburban Phoenix. Both players were suspended seven games after their arrests and Griner agreed to undergo 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling as part of a plea agreement. Both players apologized and said they worked out their differences, saying they were happy about the marriage. JohnsonGriner, a two-time All-Star with the Tulsa Shock, announced on Instagram on Thursday that she was pregnant and would miss the WNBA season.

Hopefully by sharing our stories we are able to further inspire others and continue to help, as the song says, change the world." In the clip, Diego Sans explains everyone "has a different experience" when coming out. Model and porn star Ryan Rose said he had friends and authority figures, like coaches, cut him out of their lives. For others, it was a little easier. "I've always been a little shit head, and kind of done what I want," Topher DiMaggio said. "The good thing is I've had the freedom to come out the way I want to come out...I had a choice whether I wanted to stay in the closet or be who I was, and I decided to do what I wanted.”

Police Reportedly Injured in Kiev Gay March Clash Five

(Edge Media) Opponents of a gay rights march held in Ukraine's capital have thrown smoke bombs and tear gas and the Interfax news agency cites police as saying five officers were injured in the clash. Other reports said four of the estimated 300 marchers also were injured. The march took place Saturday morning along the Dnipro River in Kiev. Helmeted riot police formed a cordon to keep marchers and opponents at a distance from each other. The opponents threw smoke bombs and some tried to break through the cordon. Some demonstrators were attacked after the march dispersed. As in other parts of the former Soviet Union, animosity to the LGBT community persists. The tensions are aggravated by opponents' claims that Ukraine's political turn toward the West will promote gay marriage.

news election 2016 White House Watch:

Jim Webb

John McDonald

Jim Webb is a decorated U.S. soldier, former senator from Virginia (20072013) and the subject of this week’s SFGN White House Watch. James Henry “Jim” Webb, Jr. is currently exploring a U.S. Presidential campaign. In November of 2014, he announced intentions to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination. “This country needs leadership,” said Webb in an interview with C-SPAN. The 69-year-old Webb comes from a military family. His father served in the U.S. Air Force and his son is a U.S. Marine with tours of service in Ramadi, Iraq as a rifleman. Webb, U.S. Secretary of the Navy under President Ronald Reagan, said being President requires one to manage the most complex byzantine bureaucracy in the world and communicate with a sense of purpose. Webb is an author of 10 books, an Emmy Award winner and currently penning a screenplay. He defeated George Allen, a Republican, in the U.S. Senate campaign

in Virginia by recruiting more than 14,000 volunteers. In his recent interview on C-SPAN, Webb said he warned five months before the invasion of Iraq that the move by then President George W. Bush would be a “strategic blunder” that would only “empower Iran.” The consequence of this U.S. led invasion, Webb said, is “divisive sectarian violence we have seen.” On LGBT issues, Webb has largely been silent. His “Born Fighting” political action committee focuses on national security, foreign policy, economic fairness and social justice issues. He has six children and his current wife, Hong Le Webb, was “scooped up out of the ocean by the U.S. Navy,” Webb said.

The MDGLCC will be honoring corporate and individual supporters of the Miami-Dade LGBT community. “Our members and the community at large look forward to networking, socializing, and mingling with each other in a very comfortable and welcoming environment,” said Jorge Richa, the chamber’s marketing director. “This is the first time an LGBT event of this magnitude will be held at this new hotel, and our guests look forward to seeing this gorgeous venue.” The event, presented by Wells Fargo, will start at 6 p.m. and include a reception and silent auction followed by dinner, the awards presentation and the Jackson Memorial Miracle After-Party Dance. Following a tradition set last year of choosing a color from the rainbow flag for the gala’s theme, this year is represented in a “sapphire” theme representing wisdom, truth, faithfulness and mental strength, Richa said. He said the chamber encourages people to wear “a splash of sapphire to this year’s event to complement all the other sapphire décor elements that will be incorporated throughout the event.” Tickets are $2,000 for tables of 10 or $200 for individual tickets and include reserved

seating, the dinner, an open bar, a gift bag, complimentary parking and participation in the grand raffle. Richa said he believes that the use of technology will enhance guests’ experiences at the gala, especially the use of the app BidPal to allow guests to check the status of their silent auction bids. “With this flexibility, they can continue to enjoy their conversations, drinks and food while having information on their silent auction bids at their fingertips,” Richa said. “They will also be able to bid on items even before they arrive at the event.” Guests will also have the chance to win a vacation to the Caribbean island of Curacao when they post selfies of themselves with a secret hashtag to social media sites. Cindy Brown, who was selected for the Gala’s ‘2015 Business Person of the Year Award,’ said she’s excited for the event. “I’ve watched it grow from a handful of business owners to one of the largest gay chambers in the country so certainly to be recognized by an organization of that magnitude is humbling,” she said. “[I’m most looking forward to] being able to celebrate the chamber and the other award recipients along with me. It’s always a good party.” Richa said that he anticipates this event will allow people to have fun and meet other LGBT-friendly workers. “This event is structured in a way that encourages people to interact with each other and make connections,” he said. “The evening has a perfect great flow and a combination of business (award presentation), fun (silent auction, vacation drawing and cruise raffle) and entertainment (after party)."

Pride Goes South Key West Celebrates

John McDonald

At the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys, one human family is coming together to celebrate pride. Rainbows are sure to be displayed throughout Key West this week as the city formally pays tribute to the diversity of its people. From drag pageants to bartender battles to crosswalk dedications, Key West figures to be the center of the action for Pride activities. A formal dedication of Florida’s first permanent rainbow colored crosswalks is scheduled for Saturday, June 13. “Key West is very happy to be putting in the first thermoplastic rainbow colored crosswalks in the state of Florida,” said Key West Mayor Craig Cate, in a news release. “It means so much to Key West to show our diversity, and it also goes perfectly with our ‘One Human Family’ Motto.” The crosswalks meet at the intersection of Duval and Petronia Streets in what is often referred to as “Old Town.” On Saturday, Duval Street will be closed to traffic so that the Bourbon Street Pub can present its bartender battle, said Steve Smith, a sales manager and tourism

promoter for the Florida Keys. Fourteen bartenders, from around the globe, are arriving in Key West to compete in the Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic. Bartenders competing in the cocktail classic must have won in their previous city by creating their own drink. Participants are coming from Los Angeles, Dallas, San Diego, Boston, etc. Their concoctions are to be judged by celebrities such as comedian Bruce Vilanch and actor Jai Rodriguez, while models offer samples to the crowd. Key West is home to roughly 25,000 permanent residents with approximately 8,000 to 10,000 tourists expected for Pride week. The fun begins Wednesday evening, June 10, as the Island House opens its doors to all for a kickoff celebration (5 to 9 p.m.). The Island House is typically a clothing optional all male resort. Elsewhere, drag queens will compete for the Miss Key West title on Thursday evening at 801 Bourbon Bar, lesbians go after the Ms. Key West title on Wednesday night and the men gather at Bourbon Street Pub for the Mr. Key West contest on Friday night.

Why The Abercrombie & Fitch Case Matters to LGBT Folks It’s rare to find LGBT activists agreeing with evangelicals Lisa Keen

Keen News Service

It is a rare occasion when LGBT legal activists find themselves on the same side of a case as the conservative Christian Legal Society and the National Association of Evangelicals. It is also rare to find LGBT legal activists on the same side as conservative Justice Antonin Scalia and his fondness for hewing to the original explicit language of a law. But so it was with EEOC v. Abercrombie & Fitch June 1, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that an employer cannot escape federal law’s requirement to accommodate a job applicant’s religious practices by claiming the applicant never told the employer about his or her religious practices. The case did not involve an LGBT person, but it did involve a scenario with which LGBT job applicants are familiar: where an employer quietly presumes something about the applicant based on the applicant’s appearance and then denies the applicant a job based on that suspicion. In this case, the employer made a presumption based on a piece of attire. The case involved a woman who applied for a job at a national clothing chain store. Because the young woman, Samantha Elauf, is Muslim, she wore to the interview a black hijab, a headscarf that many Muslim women wear in response to the Qu’ran’s directive that women cloak their sexuality in public. During her job interview with Abercrombie and Fitch for a sales rep position, Elauf did not speak about her religion, and her interviewer did not ask about it. But after the interview, the interviewer asked an Abercrombie district manager whether the woman’s headscarf would violate the company’s “look policy” against sales reps wearing caps and the color black. The interviewer said she told her supervisors that Elauf was Muslim, but the district manager said he had no knowledge that Elauf wore the scarf for religious reasons. The district manager instructed the interviewer to reject Elauf for the job. And a friend of Elauf’s who worked at the store told her she was rejected for the position because of her hijab. Elauf sought help from the the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which filed suit against Abercrombie, saying it had violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In relevant part, the Act says, “It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer to fail or refuse to hire …any individual…because of such individual’s

14

…religion….” It also prohibits employers from classifying applicants because of their religion in order to disadvantage them. Title VII also prohibits discrimination based on race, color, sex, and national origin, but not based on sexual orientation or gender identity. However, in a 1989 decision, Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins, the Supreme Court said Title VII covered discrimination based on “sex stereotyping.” And the EEOC has been accepting complaints of discrimination based on a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity as potential Title VII claims. Abercrombie argued that its rejection of Elauf couldn’t be in violation of Title VII because it never had “actual knowledge” that Elauf wore her black headscarf for religious reasons. The 10th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals agreed. The National Center for Lesbian Rights joined a brief filed by the American Jewish Committee that criticized the 10th Circuit opinion as a sort of “Don’t ask, don’t tell” approach “for any employer who wants to engage in intentional hiring discrimination based on religion.” “Rewarding such willful or pretended ignorance (or worse) is the antithesis of how Title VII is meant to work,” said the brief.

The case did not involve an LGBT person, but it did involve a scenario with which LGBT job applicants are familiar: where an employer quietly presumes something about the applicant based on the applicant’s appearance and then denies the applicant a job based on that suspicion. In an online essay, Gregory Nevins, employment fairness program specialist for Lambda Legal, explained why his group filed a brief on Elauf’s behalf. First, he said, Lambda was concerned the Supreme Court might issue “an overly broad ruling, extolling the primacy of workers’ religious rights, because many employees have cried religious discrimination when disciplined for actions harassing and even menacing to their coworkers, including LGBT workers.” But Lambda’s brief also argued that Title VII simply does not include any language that gives an employer a pass on accommodating an employee’s religious practices by claiming the employee never told the employer about his or her religion. soflagaynews //

In a case that potentially impacts LGBT workers, the U.S. Supreme Court found retail clothier Abercrombie & Fitch in violation Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for intentionally discriminating against hiring an employee based on their religion. Photos: Wikipedia

Lambda said it has seen a “disturbing tendency” by the lower courts to dismiss certain Title VII claims –including many by LGBT workers— by creating new “rules and prerequisites” that are not in the language of Title VII. In the 10th Circuit’s case, the new rule was that an employee or applicant had to inform the employer of their religious practices and work out some potential accommodation in advance. But in an 8 to 1 decision (with only Justice Clarence Thomas dissenting), the Supreme Court said Abercrombie violated Title VII when it failed to hire Elauf because it suspected she was Muslim and that she would likely seek accommodation at work for her religious beliefs. The decision, authored by Scalia, said, “An employer may not make an applicant’s religious practice, confirmed or otherwise, a factor in employment decisions.” “An employer who has actual knowledge of the need for an accommodation does not violate Title VII by refusing to hire an applicant if avoiding that accommodation is not his motive,” wrote Scalia. “Conversely, an employer who acts with the motive of avoiding accommodation may violate Title VII even if he has no more than an unsubstantiated suspicion that accommodation would be needed.”

SouthFloridaGayNews

And the 10th Circuit’s approach of requiring an employer have “actual knowledge” of an employee or applicant’s religious practices, said Scalia, is simply not in the text of Title VII that Congress enacted. “I’m very happy about the decision,” said Lambda’s national legal director Jon Davidson. Lambda’s brief, noted Davidson, “made the point emphasized by Justice Scalia that courts should not add language to Title VII that Congress did not enact in order to achieve what courts may think is a desirable result.” Meanwhile, LGBT groups are awaiting other Supreme Court decisions this month, including: Obergefell v. Hodges, an appeal challenging a Sixth Circuit decision that upheld state bans on same-sex couples marrying; and King v. Burwell, an appeal challenging a Fourth Circuit decision upholding the federal government’s tax subsidies to people with low incomes in all 50 states to buy health coverage. Lambda, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, and other LGBT groups filed a brief urging the Supreme Court to uphold the lower court decision. It noted that the subsidies have a “significant impact” on fighting HIV and that limiting those subsidies would have a “devastating public health” impact on people of color.

Announcing the

Marriage of ...

You!

Let everyone know about your nuptuals by placing an announcement in South Florida Gay News.

Graham Pulls Accounts From Wells Fargo Over Lesbian Ad John McDonald The son of famed American Christian evangelist Billy Graham is withdrawing his family’s fortune from Wells Fargo Bank because the corporation features same-sex couples in its advertising. Franklin Graham, chief executive officer of Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, announced he is moving bank accounts for two of his ministries and calling on Christians to boycott corporations that feature same-sex relationships in their advertising. “This is one way, we as Christians can speak out – we have the power of choice,” Graham posted on Facebook. “Let’s just stop doing business with those who promote sin and stand against Almighty God’s laws and His standards. Maybe if enough of us do this, it will get their attention.” Graham, reportedly, does not agree with a Wells Fargo television and online ad featuring a lesbian couple learning sign language with their adopted daughter. In the ad, the lesbians tell the little girl, “Hello, beautiful. We’re going to be your new mommies.” This was apparently the straw that broke the

back for Graham, who is now in the process of pulling the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association account and another, Samaritan’s Purse, from San Francisco based bank. It’s unclear just how much the two accounts are worth. Wells Fargo issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to diversity and the LGBT community. “At Wells Fargo, serving every customer is core to our vision and vales,” said spokeswoman Christina Kolbjornsen. “Diversity and inclusion are foundational to who we are as a company. Our advertising content reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.” Graham’s father Billy Graham, 96, rose to prominence by serving as a spiritual advisor to U.S. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon. The Charlotte Observer is reporting Franklin Graham is moving the money to WinstonSalem, N.C. based bank, BB&T.

Pembroke Pines City Commissioner tells those who disagree to “f**k off”

Below is his response to one of his Facebook friends: Pembroke Pines City Commissioner and former Broward House Executive Director Angelo Castillo presumably mocked Caitlyn Jenner on Facebook last week in order to elicit an “adult discussion.” Here’s what he had to say: “I have an announcement to make. After considerable thought, I’ve decided to remain a guy. Now, I know this defies all conventional wisdom, trends and styles. Yet I’ve considered my decisions carefully and just feel it will be better for all concerned. In the days ahead, I ask for your help and support. Staying a guy is not an easy choice to make but in reaching this difficult decision I hope you will all understand that I really think this is the best choice I can make for me. (satire added, no extra charge) Discuss.”

And “discuss” is exactly what Castillo’s Facebook friends did, much to the commissioner’s chagrin. When they started to complain his responses got angry and dismissive at one point telling everyone to go “fuck themselves” if they didn’t like it. “But nobody — as in nobody — tells me how to think, write or speak. You can like, or dislike, agree or disagree, sympathize or alienate, chuckle or cry, cringe or embrace, all or none, all that and more however you wish. But in this country, I have a right to say what I wish in the manner that I choose for the purposes I select and in the way I think is right. Anybody that doesn’t like me doing that they can go fuck themselves. Is that clear enough?”

This wasn’t Castillo’s first post about Jenner either. Earlier he posted a photo of the Vanity Fair cover featuring Jenner saying “Well, I’ll say this. She’s better looking than Rudy Giuliani.”

“If you find it inappropriate, if it offends you, defriend me. I don’t do this series for your approval or disapproval. I do it to generate adult discussion among those who are supposed to possess a curious inclination toward public policy. I couldn’t give a rats ass what impression it has on you. It’s about much more than you or me. It’s about people thinking about how they react to such things as a man deciding to courageously to align his emotional gender with his physique, and the odd reactions that evokes in some — as if his decisions (hers actually) was somehow about them. I will employ humor, I will employ seriousness, I may share my views, I may invent views — I may choose to use other means to generate that discussion and if you’re truly offended, hey, we’ll still be friends — take off. Get lost, Nobody’s forcing you to be here. There will be no problem by me.”

SFGN reached out to Broward House, where Castillo served as executive director for many years, for a comment. “Broward House is defined by the demonstrated commitment of our staff to the care and prevention of HIV and providing individuals services with dignity,” said Stacy Hyde, current president and CEO. “Our goal is to honor what makes each of us in our community similar and what make us unique, simply to be authentic.” CEO of Equality Florida Nadine Smith was more direct. “I'm disappointed that so many are using male pronouns for Caitlyn Jenner. More disappointed at the snarky post. I've got a great sense of humor but the best comics will tell you always punch up at the privileged. Punching someone being held down, that's not humor that's just meanness. Be better than this post,” she said.

opinion letter to the editor

N G SF to ou Y nk a Th ys sa EO C ss a p Com Jason, For those of us playing in the news business for nearly two decades, we appreciate the opportunity you have provided our kids. For our youth however, the enormity of this specific contribution cannot be underestimated. At Compass we promise to give a voice to youth and young adults they’ve often felt robbed of throughout their lives. Seeing their thoughts and sentiments in print not only inspires us but empowers the kids who are brave enough to come to Compass to participate in our programs. They learn to speak for themselves, and then for one another, and then for others. It’s an evolution so logical and so foolproof it is no wonder organizations across the nation want to replicate what we are doing in Palm Beach County. All of us at Compass recognize that what is happening here is a group effort. Between Compass, PBCHRC, the School District, the Children’s Services Council and the United Way - and yes, the voice the SFGN provides us locally and throughout the nation - we can be proud that we are doing the best and most,

even in the most challenging of times, to solidify a bright future for all generations of our community. So long story short - thank you. Sincerely, Tony Plakas, President/CEO of Compass

I’m gay. I am the future of the LGBT community. And I read about that future every day on my smart phone. Because that’s where I want it to be.

Gay Moroccan Seeking Asylum Arguments John McDonald

Mehdi, who grew up in Morocco, came to the U.S. in 2009; now seeking asylum, claiming his Muslim family does not accept him anymore. He has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for his case.

His father did not understand him. He tried to change him and eventually he beat him. Mehdi does not want to face this anymore and that’s why he’s in Fort Myers seeking a new life. A life free of fear and hostilities; and with the promise of all America has to offer. “I want to feel free and without always having to look over my shoulder,” he said. Mehdi grew up in Morocco, the North African nation on the Mediterranean Sea. His Muslim family does not want to accept him anymore. If he were to return, they could, undoubtedly, hurt him. Why? Because Mehdi is gay. “I was not as masculine as my father thought I should be,” Mehdi said. “For this reason, he would often compare me to my brother and hit me with a bare hand as well as a belt because he felt that I was an embarrassment to the family.” Mehdi endured the pain and punishment, suppressing his attractions for men to please his family, while looking to the West for hope. He came to America in 2009 on a cultural exchange program, working for Walt Disney World in Orlando. Mehdi kept his family ties with an uncle in Miami while working

largely with fellow Muslims for Disney. And yet he still could not be true to himself. Eventually, Mehdi’s secret was discovered by his uncle, who verbally abused him. Depression followed and bouts with anxiety led to Mehdi seeking treatment. In March of this year, he decided to apply for asylum in the U.S. “I know that if I am forced to return to Morocco, that my family, as well as Muslim Moroccan society at large, will cause me bodily harm at minimum, jail, but ultimately, I believe that my family will have me murdered before any of that occurs.” To stay here in South Florida, Mehdi needs help. Asylum can be a lengthy and arduous process. To raise money he’s set up a GoFundMe.com account, which includes his story. He has a goal of $4,000 to be used in certification of financial management program at Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. Finance, Mehdi says, is his passion. “I want to prove that I am here to be a productive member of society,” Mehdi said. “I can use my time during the asylum process to study and improve my education.”

Miley Cyrus Goes to Bat For LGBT, Homeless

The Happy Hippie Foundation will focus on at-risk youth Christiana Lilly

Photo: Instagram.

Miley Cyrus has launched the Happy Hippie Foundation, a nonprofit organization working with homeless teens, LGBT youth and other at-risk populations.

Miley Cyrus is no stranger to causing a stir, but at last year’s Video Music Awards, she did it for a cause. When Jimmy Fallon announced that she won video of the year for “Wrecking Ball,” rather than getting on stage, she sat on the edge while a young man with shoulder-length blond hair went up. He told the crowd that his name is Jesse, and he is one 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the U.S. Cyrus cried while he told his story, his hands shaking as he read from note cards, Fallon helping him hold the microphone, and implored the audience to give to help. Little did anyone know that was a precursor to a movement. Recently, the songstress announced that she has launched the Happy Hippie Foundation (HappyHippies.org), a nonprofit working with homeless teens, LGBT youth, and other at-risk populations. “Every life is valuable and we should make sure those who question their value feel protected,” Cyrus wrote in an op-ed on her website. “Change is what we need and what young people are counting on! makes life unbearable for human beings with feelings and emotions — like love, maybe the greatest one of them.” On the site, a list of LGBT organizations are listed as resources, including Covenant House, GLAAD, National Center for Transgender Equality, The Trevor Project, and the True Colors Fund. A representative from Happy Hippie Foundation declined an interview with South Florida Gay News, saying, “Due to timing and other commitments, we respectfully decline this opportunity.” Cyrus is no stranger to LGBT causes — she posed for NOH8’s photo campaign in 2011, and the following year, showed her support for same-sex marriage by getting an equal sign tattooed on her finger. In a piece she wrote for Glamour magazine, she wrote how she can’t bring herself to shop at Urban Outfitters after discovering the CEO allegedly donated to Rick Santorum. When Disney Channel’s television show “Good Luck Charlie” introduced a lesbian couple into the cast, she tweeted her approval with multiple heart emojis and exclamation marks.

On May 21, 2015 a few days ahead of the Irish referendum over gay marriage Fergus Finlay, a former senior member of the Irish Labour Party and a weekly columnist with the Irish Examiner wrote the following : “We can choose to be open or closed, to be brave or afraid, to have hope or anxiety, to choose love or to cling to the past. We can look our friends in the eye, or we can avert our gaze. We can say NO. Or we can say, with a full heart, YES.

Johanna Siguroardottir (born 1942), in 2010,while in office as Iceland's prime minister, she married her partner in what was believed to be the first same-sex wedding of a ruling government leader in Europe. In 2002, she had joined in a civil union with Jonina Leosdottir (born 1954), an author and playwright. Xavier Bettel (born 1973), the Prime Minister of Luxembourg married his Belgian partner Gauthier Destenay a year after the tiny, staunchly Roman Catholic nation's parliament approved a law allowing samesex marriage. The official ceremony was held at Luxembourg City Hall on Friday May 15 , 2015. Bettel, a 42-year-old lawyer, heads the free-market DP liberals, who entered a coalition government with the Socialists and the Greens to end 34 years of Christian Democrat reign in Luxembourg. On July 1, this nation of 520,000 will take over the presidency of the 28-nation European Union, giving Bettel major international exposure. to Fiji, but did not put the nomination forward due to protests from Fiji officials. In October 1997 Clinton nominated Hormel to be ambassador to Luxembourg, which had removed laws prohibiting consensual same-sex acts between adults in the 1800s. This appointment was the first nomination or appointment of an openly LGBT person from the U.S. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved his nomination with only Republican and conservative Senators Jesse Helms and John Ashcroft opposed. Three other Republicans, James Inhofe, Tim Hutchinson, and Bob Smith, with the urging of religious and social conservatives campaigned vigorously against Hormel's nomination. Trent Lott, the Republican Majority Leader, worked to block the vote and publicly called homosexuality a sin and compared it to alcoholism and kleptomania. Christian-based conservative groups like the Traditional Values Coalition (TVC) and the Family Research Council publicly accused Hormel of being pro-pornography and antiCatholic and the Senators presented those charges to derail the nomination. They asserted that Hormel would be rejected in the largely Catholic Luxembourg. To support the pornography allegation, a list of materials in the Hormel collection at the San Francisco Public Library was compiled by the TVC; it was later pointed out that the same works were also in the Library of Congress. Concerns about Hormel's reception in Luxembourg were "blunted” when officials of the country, which has laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation, indicated that he would be welcome. The first leather bar in San Francisco was Why Not in 1961. It was followed by Tool Box on the corner of Harrison and Fourth Street in the South of Market district. It featured a mural by Chuck Arnett. The June 26, 1964, issue of LIFE magazine featured a fourteen-page article on “Homosexuality in America.” The opening photograph, almost a twopage spread, showed men in leather at Tool Box. No doubt, the picture of leathermen was selected because it fulfilled the magazine’s premise that “the ‘gay world’...is actually a sad and often sordid world.” Homosexuals were outsiders, different from the rest of America. And men in leather were more than outsiders. They were outlaws. Indeed, homosexual acts were criminal offenses subject to years in prison. Many homosexuals hid their preferences, but not the two main groups of outsiders: men in drag and men in leather. Even though men dressed as women were the antithesis of macho leathermen who shunned any hint of effeminacy, they shared a common outlook. Unlike the closeted men in suits and ties who attempted to fit unnoticed into society, the outlaws shouted their defiance and celebrated their diversity.

outh Florida may have a preponderance of sunny days and hot men, but what it doesn’t have is a lot of neighborhood bakeries. When I lived “up north” it seemed that there was a bakery on every other block (which may account for why the folks up there tend to be a bit beefier than here in SoFla). A few months ago Wilton Manors got its very own neighborhood bakery when Out of the Oven opened. Out of the Oven’s owners, JT Threlkeld, a pastry chef and his partner Chris Messina moved to the area a few years ago and also missed having the neighborhood bakery experience, so they opened one. They combined JT’s skills and Chris’ families’ Italian recipes. Stopping into their shop is the next best thing to having an Italian grandmother. The products they put out, whether loaves of fragrant bread, pastries or savory items are all made fresh daily. I was amazed at how reasonable the prices are. Most single serve pastries and savories are priced between $2.95 and $5. In fact, you can have a very filling lunch with one of their savory items, a soft drink and a dessert and still walk out with change from a $10 bill. Try the pizza roll. It’s nothing like those awful frozen concoctions; this one is made of cheese, sauce and a filling (spinach, sausage or

nsane Cookies are so “insanely” rich and chewy that it’s hard to believe that they didn’t just pop out of your oven. Made from premium ingredients such as pure vanilla extract, chocolate from 100 percent cocoa powder, and heavenly, sweet-cream butter, the large cookies are soft-textured with layers of flavors that will make your taste-buds erupt in delight. I like my cookies a little crisper and found that if I stored them in the fridge for an hour or so, they were just right. There are dozens of flavors, some classic, such as chocolate chip (with or without pecans), sugar, oatmeal raisin and the like, but the exotic combinations are the ones with “Wow!” factor. Consider sending a platter of the “Dirty Pig” to the Ramrod. The combination of chocolate brownie dough topped with bacon & brown sugar should be a hit. Among some of the other exotic flavors I’ve enjoyed are; “Feeling Blue,” a tart lemon dough studded with white chocolate chips and dried blueberries and “The Exhibitionist” combines a classic butter cookie dough with white chocolate chips, dried cranberries and pistachio nuts. “Identity Crisis” blends chocolate chips, peanut butter chips and mini Reese's cups with peanut butter dough; the “Over Sleeper” recreates French toast with maple syrup with bacon bits while the “Wallflower” melds cinnamon oatmeal dough with raisins & walnuts. Right now, they are available by mail order, or for local residents, at pick up sites in Oakland Park (Funky Buddha Brewery), Pembroke

whatever strikes their fancy that day) and is rolled pinwheel style. Served piping hot and bigger than your fist, it makes for a satisfying lunch. Individual quiches, rich and creamy, are available in a variety of flavor combination as are homemade soups. The clam “chowdah” is rich and creamy and chock full of tasty, tender bits of clam. For something lighter try one of the flatbreads. Nearly a foot of paper thin, yet sturdy crust supports combinations such as chicken and spinach, bbq chicken or the aromatic and tasty roasted garlic. Your breath will stink, but go ahead and enjoy and just buy a roll of Mentos for later. For dessert try one of the homemade whoopee pies, a fudgy brownie, cookie or a jelly-filled doughnut, which are baked, not fried. J.T.’s pineapple upside-down cake is better than my mom’s and the individual chocolate lava cake will satisfy even the most addicted chocoholic. Fresh loaves of challah are baked every Friday and are as perfectly prepared as all of the other loaves of bread, whether a French baguette, olive bread or a power bar. Don’t even get me started on the addictive pretzel rolls and giant pretzels! I won’t be buying any baked goods from Publix, now that I can get infinitely better fare for the same price at Out of the Oven.

If you prefer to look at the selection, before you order, head over to the Yellow Green Farmer’s Market in Hollywood on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. If you’ve got to have a fix and can’t wait, the cookies are also available at Serendip-A-Tea in Kendall, Papalani Gelato in Boynton Beach and at the Whole Foods Market in Davie on Tuesdays from 10-3. If ordering online it is possible to create your own unique cookie by choosing one of 16 dough bases (picking regular or gluten free flour) from the classics (butter, brownie, peanut butter dough) to the inventive (red velvet, root beer, strawberry), then add up to three of nearly 30 add-ins from chocolate chips, nuts or dried fruit to potato chips, bacon or pretzels) for $25 a dozen ($4 more for gluten free). They’ll even turn them into sandwich cookies with a choice of fillings for the same amount for five cookies. The company will also deliver locally for $10. Each separate flavor is carefully delivered in its own bag. If you are sending the cookies as a gift, the company packs them on a nest of crinkle cut paper inside chocolate-colored boxes which are wrapped in beautiful satin ribbon and attaches a card with your personal note. For parties many local customers or decoratively arranged cookies on domed platters. The lead time for an order is 24 hours whether for local pick-up or delivery or out of town shipping.

Okay, you can admit it, you like cheesy science fiction and suspense flicks. Well, this weekend, one of the most anticipated summer blockbusters hits the cinemaplex, “Jurassic World.” Like so many sequels, we’re really not anticipating anything new—dinosaurs cloned from ancient DNA terrorize unsuspecting visitors at a theme park—but this film does feature hunky Chris Pratt. That’s reason enough to brave the crowds over the weekend. Check local listings for theaters and show times.

Much More than A Stand Up Guy

Mario Cantone brings his “newish” one-man show to the Parker Playhouse this weekend J.W. Arnold

Any fan of the syndicated, estrogencharged talk show, “The View,” knows Mario Cantone. And they know he has more than a few opinions on just about every subject. While Cantone has served as a regular contributor and guest co-host—and every straight woman in middle America’s gay best friend—for more than 17 years, he doesn’t harbor any aspirations to become a member of the cast. “I don’t think I’ll ever be permanent,” he explained over the phone from his home in New York City. “ABC’s news department is running the show and they happen to like me…but they’re going to pick woman. That’s what they want and that’s what it should be.” Cantone, a Boston native, has worked with nearly every member of the fluid cast and appreciates the opportunity to work in his adopted hometown. He admits he is “probably more political” on the show than when he takes the stage. The 55-year-old actor and comedian is bringing his “newish” one-man show to Fort Lauderdale’s Parker Playhouse. He and his band promise several entertaining musical numbers, including a new opening. “I love working with music,” he enthusiastically confessed. “There (are) a lot of people who have never seen me perform live. It’s very different from anything I do on television. It’s very musical, with a lot of stand-up and pop culture and musical impressions. Bruce, Liza, Judy and I will all be there.”

Speaking of television, unlike many actors who created iconic roles on television and regretted the experience, Cantone still appreciates his breakout role as Charlotte’s gay wedding planner, Anthony Marentino, on “Sex and the City.” “It’s tough because you risk becoming pigeonholed, but you can’t bite the hand that feeds you,” he added, hoping another movie sequel will be filmed. “I hope they rectify that last one.” Unlike other actors and comedians, he only draws a line when it comes to reality shows, when it comes to working. “I’d do the biggest piece of shit,” Cantone said, “as long as it’s scripted.” Cantone also has a theater project in the works with former “Sex and the City” cast mate Cynthia Nixon directing. The play will recognize the accomplished but little known Canadian female impersonator Craig Russell, who died in 1990. His biggest concern is the degree of control stars lose when they turn their lives over to producers and editors in reality shows. Plus, his husband would simply put his foot down if a camera followed the longtime couple around 24-hours a day. “If you don’t have control, they can make you look like an asshole,” he said adamantly. “Kathy Griffin did hers and stayed above it. Joan and Melissa Rivers did, too.” In the meantime, he’s happy to continue singing and dancing and telling jokes—as long as they’re scripted.

Actor and comedian Mario Cantone appears at the Parker Playhouse, 707 NE 8th St. in Fort Lauderdale, on Saturday, June 13 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35.40 - $88.50 at ParkerPlayhouse.com.

INSIDE THE MODEL HOUSE

nimated conversation filled the car leaving the airport; new acquaintances have a great deal to say in a short time. The ride took them on congested arteries that probably made sense to the locals but tore away any semblance of orientation to the newcomer. Mile after mile strip malls filled with subsistence businesses were broken only by traffic signals. Turning left into a side street brought a distinct comfort with its quiet. The quiet only served to set loose a queasy stomach in anticipation of what was today’s final destination. Rounding the corner into the cul-de-sac his eye roamed first up one side of the street then back down the other. Finally the end of a long day of travel was coming to a close as he rode along to his new home. A new home sans everything and everyone he has ever known, exchanged for the hope and dream of a new life. Inside the place appeared in complete disarray. Uncounted dogs barked incessantly. The living room contained two beds, a TV and the debris of two young men living out of suitcases. Food packages, soda containers, and dishes covered most surfaces of the kitchen. A family room opening onto a pool area was the most welcoming of the rooms. Two couches filled a corner with a broad square table in front of them. A big old projection television stood near one wall visible from any seat on the couch. Tom Moran with Orlando Models rattled off the house rules. "Pick a place to sleep, one that is not already claimed. There may be a bureau for your things, or just leave them in your suitcase. No alcohol is permitted, none, ever. You bring it here you are out. No drugs are permitted, none, ever. You bring any here you are out. We don't shoot in the house and you don't bring customers here. We grocery shop once in a while and share the cooking and cleaning. I buy the food. You can contribute. Laundry gets done when someone needs it, the load usually contains something of everyone’s; you’ll find it dumped on the couch to take what’s yours. We live quietly. The neighbors are aware of who we are and what we do and many are unhappy or overly sensitive to that. Most of the other boys don't have a car either so there is a good deal of walking. When you walk through the neighborhood be quiet, especially at night and especially if you have been drinking. Always be respectful to any neighbors you meet; we need all the good will we can get.”

Depending on the shooting schedule the first scene might be a week or ten days away. Time in between is hanging out with the other boys, getting oriented and setting up an escort profile. Several years ago several law enforcement agencies raided the house after keeping it under surveillance for some time. They didn't know what they were looking for so they focused on child pornography and drugs. Finding none of either, or anything else that interested them, they have limited their harassment since. Sometimes they even give the porn actors a ride at night. Tom led the way through the rest of the house showing off his bedroom and two others. His was off limits with a solid door and secure lock. The other two each contained one queen size bed along with miscellaneous furniture. Two boys shared each bed. With his job done, Tom retired to his room leaving the new boy to the others. They proceeded to orient him to the real rhythms of living in a model house. The de facto leader of the band of young men living in a suburban Florida house acting in gay porn movies took the new arrival aside, led him to his room and performed the real orientation. Each new arrival finds a certain comforting commonality there. Tom and the reigning senior porn actor who has held on for several years in an environment where most last a few months share commonalities. They are with the passing of years partners, non sexual partners even best friends no matter their differences. Information is held close, their location a difficult detail to be entrusted with; a certain suspicion holds their eyes askance, their trust in reserve, their reticence to openly communicate readily apparent. Like they have something to hide, though what they do is openly available to anyone with a computer and Internet access. The model house is a conundrum of noise and confusion delivering a certain sense of comfort to the new transplant as no matter the state of the place it serves as a refuge from a past life now left behind.

MEET ZAKK MATTHEWS – PORN ACTOR

ife grinds away slowly in religious Eastern Oregon homes; especially when a kid has the big secret. When Mom listens intently to Rush Limbaugh all the while silently nodding affirmatively, the kid knows this is not an announcement that will go over well. A sister outed Justin to his parents after her confessional priest demanded she do so. Dad kept it simple “get out, and stay out until you are no longer queer.” Justin, whose porn name is Zakk Matthews, originally hails from Oregon and lived for a time in Eastern Washington mostly as a first trial run away from home and family and an anonymous place to explore his newly found sexual orientation. Portland lured the now 25-year-old for college and he worked as a chef before moving to Boise in hopes of reconnecting with family. Thankfully gays are not limited to families of blood. Justin's family remained as bitter at his homosexuality as the day they slammed the door of the family home on him and the Catholic Church excommunicated him. Justin first had sex, and that with a woman, while in college. He was a late bloomer. A pair of male twins provided the first gay sexual experience, severing his interest in women and propelling Justin faster along the road to understanding himself. Like most gay men Justin is in search of his life partner. Though there is a certain disconnect between escorting and coming home to dinner. Severance from family is often the most traumatic result of coming out. The first Christmas after his expulsion Justin returned to the family home gifts in hand only to be met at the door, relieved of his burden and directed to the back yard where he could see his father. An elder brother, married with kids allows visits as long as “you don't look gay.” In all his blood family only his grandparents have embraced him. Being alone, broke on the street is by no means a uniquely gay condition though far too many gay youth do their penance

there. In Boise he encountered an accepting community, found a cause in Add The Words Idaho and employment in his chosen profession. Life in Boise was comfortable in those three years though he did not find contentment or fulfillment. Tom Moran, owner and manager of Orlando Models, made contact with him. Over the course of a year they chatted periodically via social media sites. Tom was ready for Justin much faster than Justin was ready to upturn his life. Most life changing decisions are helped along by external forces. Unemployment, lease renewal approaching and a little cash in hand helped Justin to commit to his decision to leave all he knew for a world he could only imagine. Committing and acting in the same week leaves little time for reconsideration so the decision to become a porn actor, model and escort brought only mild apprehension, a certain excitement and a terrible case of butterflies in the stomach. There was no question about the decision and he would do the same again. Those butterflies took him all the way to the airport where he spent his last twenty-five dollars checking one of his two bags that now contained his entire life. The flight took him from Boise to Phoenix and then a great leap across America to Orlando, where Tom met him at the curb and they drove to the model house. In that car trip those butterflies yielded to freeing excitement tinged only mildly by lingering apprehension. That lingering apprehension was centered on the last stop, the house; fully committed now he could only wait for the last corner to be turned to get his first sight of his new home. Disappointment was the first impression. Though it looked OK from the street the house inside was a wreck and disorganized. That first night Justin slept in the living room, and then he moved into a room with another boy. Now they share a bed. Life in the model house can be crowded, noisy, and disorganized. And, at the very same time provide an environment conducive to merging the mutual commonalities of disparate though similarly focused young gay men.

Series continues next week with part four and five. For the whole series, check out SFGN.com/PornSeries. soflagaynews //

Levi Michaels Living It Up In South America Hunter Houston

So this week we discovered Levi Michaels. Yes, we are late to the party. Michaels is quite the accomplished actor and media talent. He has a YouTube channel that has been written about in the Huffington Post, Queerty and various other gay porn blogs. Porn Pulse is hoping to be next. Michaels (aka Rustin Charles) is currently filming in South America, tweeting on June 8 that he was “day drunk” on the continent. The website Str8UpGayPorn. com reports Michaels, an exclusive actor for CockyBoys.com, is using “fan donations” to intoxicate himself on foreign soil. Michaels uploaded a video to his YouTube account from Bogota, Colombia last week in which the bearded strawberry blond actor said things were going well after recovering from a messy night before which featured heavy drinking of Long Island Ice Teas and Vino. Meanwhile, Buzzfeed has created an interesting series in which porn stars watch

their scenes with everyday Joes. In a video titled, “Men Watch Porn With Porn Stars,” actors Conner Habib, Allie Haze, Danny Wylde and Paris Kennedy watch some of their scenes with the Buzzfeed staff. For his part, Wylde confirms he is uncut.
