Miami Beach star David Bromstad is coming out with a new show on the HGTV television channel. On Facebook, Bromstad tells fans “Beach Flip” premieres July 5. Bromstad is no stranger to HGTV, he launched his design brand on several programs, “Design Star” and “Color Splash” most notably. The actor spoke to SFGN via telephone having just

returned to Miami Beach after work in California. Bromstad said he was focusing on the color pink for his current designs -pink towels in particular. When asked how he was able to overcome being bullied as a MBER child, Bromstad credited Ma Eformer lover who, he said, “woke up every morning next to me and told me how great I was.”

ManCrunch Raises The Stakes In Gay Dating Apps John McDonald

A new gay dating app is promising to end those uncomfortable surprises.

In a news release, Rob Whent, President and Chief Executive Officer of WeCam Technologies, declares a new mobile device features first-of-its-kind live video interaction.

“A site that redefines the homoerotic, ManCrunch is provocative, kinky and dripping with sex appeal,” Whent said.

ManCrunch’s arrival comes as other mobile gay dating apps are under heavy criticism for fake profiles and phishing scams. In a letter to SFGN, reader Jeromy Carpenter blasted the mobile app Grindr for how it handled complaints.

“Recently, there has been a flood of fake profiles obviously operated by braindead pieces of shit who are phishing for phone numbers,” Carpenter writes.

ManCrunch claims that will not happen on its platform, touting the app’s ability to curb profile “surprises” while connecting users to the global market.

“One of the things we know for a fact is that people are put off by profiles where what you

see is not what you get,” said Avid Life Media, Inc. President Noel Binderman. “We felt that the time was right to leapfrog the competition by offering a dating app that features video chat allowing everyone to ‘get real’ when it comes to dating.”

Binderman claims ManCrunch Mobile is setting an industry standard. The ManCrunch website has been operational since 2010 and was the subject of much controversy for having its Super Bowl advertisement rejected.

ManCrunch claims more than 175,000 members worldwide with a 30 percent rate of growth since 2012.

Pedestrian Killed in Wilton Manors Crash

(BSO) 64 year old Frederick Alan Mende was fatally injured while crossing Dixie Highway last Wednesday night. Mende was crossing west to east along the 2800 block of Dixie Highway when officers report Mende stepped into the path of a black four door jeep driven

by 50 year old Nancy Korn-Zelch. Korn-Zelch placed the call to 911. Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported Mende to Broward Health Medical where he was later pronounced dead. BSO Traffic Homicide does not believe speed was a factor in the accident.

elray Beach Moves Forward D with LGBT-Inclusive Civil Rights Ordinance

(SFGN) At Friday’s meeting the Delray Beach City Commission unanimously voted to enact an ordinance that would include gender identity, expression, and sexual orientation among the statuses protected against discrimination. The final hearing on the ordinance is set for July 7. If it passes, Delray Beach will join seventeen other Florida municipalities - Atlantic Beach, Boynton Beach, Dunedin, Gainesville, Greenacres, Gulfport, Key West, Lake Worth, Leesburg, Miami, Miami Beach, Oakland Park, Orlando, Tampa, Venice, West Palm Beach and Wilton Manors - which have enacted LGBT-inclusive municipal civil rights ordinances.

"While the nation is rapidly moving forward on recognizing lesbian and gay relationships, Florida still lacks any statewide laws providing equal protection to LGBT Floridians," said Rand Hoch, President and Founder of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council. "Therefore, until Congress or the Florida Legislature take action, local LGBT advocacy rights organizations such as PBCHRC must continue to work with county and municipal leaders to protect our community form discrimination."

The trend is receiving as much support from local leaders as it is backlash.

“Making gay a protected class is making us more like North Korea. Day is soon coming when we will realize we have made an enormous mistake,” tweeted John Stemberger, head of Florida Family Policy Council and leader of "On My Honor," an organization formed to fight against an inclusive Boy Scouts.

(DOH) Hepatitis C in Florida continues to be a public health concern requiring a comprehensive statewide approach.

Since 2011, as part of an enhanced surveillance project for hepatitis, the Florida Department of Health has developed surveillance tools to take advantage of the availability of electronic laboratory results and has since processed approximately 650,000 electronic laboratory results for hepatitis in 2014. This enhancement has improved the quality of reporting, while reducing reporting time across the state. As the department continues to educate, assess, and ultimately prevent hepatitis morbidity throughout the state, further enhancements to the hepatitis surveillance system will target improved linkage of hepatitis clients to care.

The Florida Department of Health has launched a new webpage to provide educational materials regarding this disease. The webpage (http://bit.ly/1H83gQg) contains background information on the disease, downloadable broadcast-quality video and a "frequently asked questions” section. The department encourages Florida residents learn about hepatitis C and to take the proper precautions to protect themselves.

York State Fair to Have FirstNew Ever Pride Day

(AP) The New York State Fair is getting its first-ever pride day.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says a celebration of New York's LGBT community will take place on Friday, August 28 to formalize what has been an informal gathering at the fair by members of the LGBT community.

Pride Day at the Fair will begin with the raising of the Rainbow Flag at the Main Gate of the Fairgrounds. It will be followed by a day-long information fair linking fairgoers to various organizations.

The day will conclude with a free concert by GrammyAward-winning singer Melissa Etheridge, who has campaigned for LGBT equality since coming out in 1993.

The state fair runs from August 27 to September 7.

(EDGE) The drama in Fire Island Pines now officially spans two continents.

The Ascension Party, a staple of the circuit scene for nine years, is packing up and leaving Fire Island Pines and traveling to Mykonos this August, citing the recent boycott against OUTpost Fire Island Pines properties as the impetus for the move.

A post on the Ascension Facebook page in part reads: On Wednesday evening, August 19, 2015, Ascension is going to RISE on the beach at Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos Greece!

Thanks to the invitation and enthusiastic support of its producers, Ascension is going to be this year's opening night event of XLsior Mykonos, the award-winning weekend long celebration that attracts tens of thousands of people from around (sic) all over the world to that other magical island in the Aegean Sea. The announcement marks the second time the Ascension Party has changed dates and venues for its 2015 edition.

Prior to the move to Mykonos, Ascension's producers announced that the party, long held in the middle of August, would be moved to Labor Day weekend. The move angered fans of the party, many of whom arranged for their house share weekends to coincide with the original date.

Although there was immediate speculation surrounding the motivation behind the move to Mykonos, suspicions were put to rest Friday morning when Ascension's producer, Eric Von Kuersteiner announced his reasons for moving the party via post on the closed Facebook group "Free" Fire Island Pines. In the post, Von Kuersteiner cites the recent boycott of the OUTpost Fire Island Pines properties that arose when one of its partners, Ian Reisner, co-hosted an ersatz fund raising party for anti-gay GOP hopeful Ted Cruz at his Manhattan home in June.

(EDGE) One Million Moms (OMM) have a headache called equality and now thanks to a new LGBT-inclusive ad campaign for Tylenol that includes a same-sex prom couple and two dads with a baby, they'll have to turn to offbrand acetaminophen or maybe just deal with it. Like that will happen.

Following on the heels of their tirade against the makers of Chobani yogurt earlier this week for including a lesbian couple in a television ad, OMM has a new rant against Tylenol. They claim the makers of the popular pain reliever is

pushing the LGBT agenda, redefining "family," normalizing sin and desensitizing viewers.

OMM is calling on their mis-counted 72,000 followers to contact Tylenol's parent company Johnson & Johnson and demand the ad be pulled. They're even threatening to lay off Tylenol altogether if their demands aren't met, which means the One Million Dads married to One Million Moms will probably be getting the old "not tonight, I have a headache" excuse a lot in the foreseeable future.

Fitting into the evening's theme "Top Bottoms of Burlesque," Cox's act turned the tables on the nefarious casting couch as she

put casting director Casey Lee Ross in his place. It was one of several acts loosely themed around the classic film and stage musical "42nd Street."

(AP) Human Rights Watch on Monday criticized a Malaysian Islamic court for fining nine Muslim transgender women for crossdressing and jailing two of them for a month.

Religious authorities in northeastern Kelantan state arrested the group in a raid on June 16 and they pleaded guilty the next day, the New York-based watchdog said in a statement.

Their lawyer has filed an appeal and the two sentenced to jail were released on bail pending the outcome, it said.

Human Rights Watch has called Muslimmajority Malaysia one of the world's worst countries for transgender people as they face

constant harassment, sexual abuse and arrest

by Islamic authorities.

Last November, three Muslim transgender people won a landmark ruling in a civil court against Shariah law banning them from crossdressing. The Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that the Shariah law in southern Negeri Sembilan state was discriminatory as it failed to recognize men diagnosed with gender identity issues and deprived transgender people of the right to live with dignity.

The state's Islamic Religious Department has appealed the ruling to the top Federal Court, with a hearing due in August.

Plaintiff Ready to Help if Marriage Ruling Goes His Way Lead

(AP) If the U.S. Supreme Court rules in favor of same-sex marriage, the lead plaintiff in the historic case says he'll be able to help out with the expected surge of couples wanting to wed.

Jim Obergefell (OH'-burk-uh-fel) of Cincinnati says he has gotten ordained online in preparation. He says he wanted to be able to offer to perform marriages for others as "a nod" to his own proposal to his partner immediately after the high court's 2013 ruling that struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act. He and his dying partner, John Arthur, were unable to wed in their home state because of Ohio's 2004 ban, so Arthur's aunt got ordained and officiated their wedding in a medically equipped plane on a Maryland tarmac.

Arthur died three months later, and shortly after, Obergefell began the legal challenge titled James Obergefell, et al, v. Richard Hodges, et al, that is before the high court.

(Hodges is the director of the Ohio Department of Health.)

Obergefell, a real estate salesman, has been in Washington awaiting the decision. If the court rules for same-sex marriage, he said recently by email, "I imagine I'll be out celebrating."

Marriage Ruling before Action

(AP) In Tennessee, state and local officials say they are taking a wait-and-see approach to the possibility that the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn the state's ban on gay marriage.

Asked recently about any preparation, Gov. Bill Haslam said "discussions have been happening" at the state Attorney

in the next term.

This is also the time of the year when a justice could announce a retirement. But no justice, including 82-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg, has given any hint that retirement is imminent.

Besides same-sex marriage and healthcare subsidies, the remaining five cases involve lethal injection, housing discrimination, independent redistricting committees, mercury emissions and repeat offenders.

County clerks' offices are where residents go for marriage certificates, but it is not clear how soon they will begin issuing certificates to gay couples if the ban is overturned.

Wayne Mashburn, president of the Tennessee County Clerks Association, said the clerks will take their direction from the County Officials Association of Tennessee. The director of that association, Jay West, would say only that they are "first waiting to see what the Supreme Court decision is."

The marriage certificates themselves, with their "bride" and "groom" designations are issued by the state Health Department. Spokesman Woody McMillin said the department's attorney is reaching out to the Social Security Administration to ask about possible changes to the form.

New forms will be printed if they are needed, but they are not being prepared in advance.

Driver's license centers will also be affected if the ban is overturned. Currently, gay couples married in other states cannot get their names changed on their licenses by showing marriage certificates because Tennessee does not recognize those marriages.

Department of Safety spokeswoman Dalya Qualls said in an email that "once the Supreme Court decision is released the department will consult with staff attorneys and the Attorney General's office on any action that may need to be taken."

Belief in Dignity at GayRootsMentor, of Kennedy's Views

(AP) The Irish Catholic boy who came of age in Sacramento after World War II is an unlikely candidate to be the author of the Supreme Court's major gay rights rulings.

But those who have known Justice Anthony Kennedy for decades and scholars who have studied his work say he has long stressed the importance of valuing people as individuals.

And he seems likely also to have been influenced in this regard by a pillar of the Sacramento legal community, a closeted gay man who hired Kennedy as a law school instructor and testified on his behalf at his high court confirmation hearings in Washington.

With three major gay rights opinions to his name already, the 78-year-old Kennedy is the prohibitive favorite to write the Supreme Court decision expected in the next few days that could extend same-sex marriage nationwide.

Kennedy's friendship with Gordon Schaber began in the mid-1960s when Schaber recruited the young lawyer to teach at the McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. Schaber, who served as the school's dean for 34 years, was in the process of transforming McGeorge from an unaccredited night school to a respected institution that now is a part of the University of the Pacific.

Schaber never married and was widely believed to be gay, according to accounts from a dozen people who worked for him or were active in Sacramento's political and legal communities.

ame-Sex Marriage Opponents Urge Supreme Court to Go Slow

(AP) Same-sex marriage opponents acknowledge they face a tough task in trying to persuade the Supreme Court to allow states to limit marriage to a man and a woman.

But they are urging the court to resist embracing what they see as a radical change in society's view of what constitutes a marriage, especially without more information about how same-sex marriage affects children who are raised by two fathers or two mothers.

The idea that same-sex marriage might have uncertain effects on children is strongly contested by those who want the court to declare that same-sex couples have a right to marry in all 50 states. Among the 31 plaintiffs in the cases that will be argued at the court on April 28 are parents who have spent years seeking formal recognition on their children's birth certificates or adoption papers.

The concern for children is among several threads that run through the legal, political, social and religious arguments being advanced in support of upholding the samesex marriage bans.

Several groups supporting the states stress that a biologically intact family is the ideal environment for children. But they also are careful to acknowledge the value of adoption, perhaps in recognition of Chief Justice Roberts' role as the father of two adopted children. "Adoption is an indispensable social good that provides children a home when the ideal, a stable, two-parent biological family, is unavailable," said a brief from groups that support biological parenting.

Another argument opponents make is that a ruling in favor of same-sex marriage could lead to opening marriage to three or more people.

These same arguments about cultural and societal harm didn't fare well when they were made in the Supreme Court two years ago in a challenge to the federal anti-gay marriage law. In an opinion written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court struck down the part of that law that denied federal benefits to legally married same-sex couples.

(AP) Pitcairn Island, a tiny speck in the Pacific that's home to just 48 people, has passed a law allowing same-sex marriage but has no gay couples wanting to wed.

First settled in 1790, Pitcairn is a British Overseas Territory that has some legal autonomy and is often considered the world's smallest country by population.

Islanders are descended from the mutineers of the British navy vessel Bounty and their Tahitian companions.

Pitcairn Deputy Governor Kevin Lynch said Monday the new law came into effect May 15 but initially wasn't published online after the island's website encountered some technical issues. He said the change was suggested by British authorities after England, Wales and Scotland legalized same-sex marriage last year. He said the law

change was unanimously approved by the local council.

Seventh-generation resident Meralda Warren said there haven't been any samesex marriages since the law passed and she doesn't know of any gay couples wanting to wed. As with most law changes, she said, a notice was put up on the verandah of the town hall and a second at the island's general store.

Warren said she knew of just one islander who had identified as gay, and that was a long time ago. And she said any gay couples wanting to marry might have difficulty, as the island's only preacher was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a denomination which opposes gay marriage.

She said the island administrator might be able to officiate.

AutoStraddle has released its latest set of data on the porn consumption of lesbian, bisexual and queer identifying women as part of their Ultimate Lesbian Sex Survey(http://bit.ly/1dZX7dz ).

The survey launched in February and garnered more than 8,500 responses, 89% of which were from women between the ages of 18 – 36. Topics have included “How Often Do Queer Women Have Sex?” “The Masturbation Habits of Queer Women,” and “41 Feelings You Have About Scissoring.” The latest release cites the 87% of survey respondents who admitted to watching porn, further breaking down the stats by media – print, online, femslash, art/photography, and genre-- lesbian & queer, straight, gay male, or lesbian made by/for straight people.

Kameny To Be Inducted Into U.S. Dept. Of Labor Hall Of Honor Frank

(Dept of Labor) Civil rights leader and worker rights equality pioneer Frank Kameny will be inducted into the Department of Labor’s Hall of Honor on Tuesday, June 23 at 3 p.m. at its national headquarters.

A World War II veteran and Harvard-educated doctor of astronomy with the U.S. Army Map Service, Kameny was discharged, and barred for life from federal government employment after U.S. Civil Service Commission investigators asked if he was a homosexual in 1958.

Kameny fought the injustice, taking his case to the U.S. Supreme Court, which denied his petition in 1961. The setback led him to become a co-founder of the first gay rights organization in Washington, D.C., and begin his tireless fight to force the nation's largest employer — the federal government — to end discrimination in its employment practices based on sexual orientation. Kameny died in 2011 at age 86.

Health Care Just Got Easier To Find Transgender

(CNN) On Thursday, nonprofit RAD Remedy launched RAD, a Yelp-style database of health providers, on Thursday. RAD Remedy's mission is to serve the transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer communities. The database is a necessity, the organization's director says, because too many people from those communities face discrimination by health care providers or don't have access to doctors who understand their needs.

There are about 1,000 providers on The RAD list so far. They have been recommended by community organizations and individuals across the country. While not all have been vetted by the RAD Remedy team, the goal is that they all will be eventually.

In week 21 of our U.S. Presidential campaign reporting, we come to Vice President Joseph Robinette “Joe” Biden, Jr. Mentioned often during the early speculation days of the campaign, Biden appears to have dropped from mainstream news media consideration as a potential candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination. Of course, if U.S. President Barack Obama were to leave office then Biden would be next in line.

Biden, 72, campaigned for President in 1988 and 2008, dropping out, on both occasions, early in the primary process. Before joining the Obama ticket, Biden served as a U.S. Senator from Delaware (1973-2009) and the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.

Additionally, Biden chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee during the contentious nominations of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas.

Although Biden has made no public remarks of late regarding a campaign, there is a movement to get him on the ballot. Draft Biden 2016 is an effort by volunteers to collect signatures and petitions on the Vice President’s behalf.

On its website, www.draftbiden2016. com, the group highlights Biden’s qualities of experience, values, foreign policy and ability as a skilled negotiator as reasons to draft him. On June 20, in Davenport Iowa, about three dozen people attended a “rally” organized by Draft Biden 2016 Executive Director Will Pierce, reported the Quad-City Times. Pierce told the Times his group has collected more than 81,000 signatures of support.

In terms of LGBT issues, Biden was an early supporter of marriage equality, stating on the television program “Meet the Press” in May of 2012 that he was “absolutely comfortable” with same-sex marriage in society. Biden’s position, many analysts believe, helped convince Obama to take a stronger stance for equal marriage rights.

Biden is married to Jill, an educator. The couple is mourning the loss of their eldest son, Beau, who passed from brain cancer last month.

Carlos Guillermo Smith is throwing his hat into the ring in Florida's House District 49.

At the Florida Democratic Party's Leadership Blue Gala in Hollywood, Guillermo Smith announced intentions to seek the House seat now held by Republican Rene "Coach" Plasencia.

A public policy specialist for the civil rights organization, Equality Florida, Guillermo Smith knows Tallahassee well. In an interview with SFGN, he referenced the recent legislative session as proof of his ability to protect the LGBT community.

"There were so many hostile bills targeting the LGBT community," Guillermo Smith said.

Together with like-minded lobbyists, Guillermo Smith said he was able to defeat those dangerous bills, such as the infamous "bathroom bill" put forth by Miami Representative Frank Artiles. Formerly known as HB 583, the bill targeted transgender people, denying them access to public bathrooms. The bill died in committee and never made it to Governor Rick Scott’s desk.

“What we learned in Florida is that activism is not dead,” Guillermo Smith said.

Working with Equality Florida, Guillermo Smith said he was able to effectively use multiple measures to get lawmakers in the place where they need to be.

The 34-year-old Orlando man said he classifies himself as a gay Latino. His father is Peruvian and his mother is of French Canadian ethnicity. He is a bachelor with no children who attended the University of Central Florida with former Florida Representative Joe Saunders.

Saunders now works for the Washington, D.C. based Human Rights Campaign. He narrowly lost the District 49 seat to Plasencia in the 2014 midterm elections.

National HIV Testing Day June 27 A roundup of events in South Florida

June 27 marks the 20th National HIV Testing Day. On this day, many organizations and health clinics host health fairs, education workshops, and extend HIV testing hours to promote HIV testing.

The day was created in 1995 by the National Association of People Living with AIDS (NAPWA) to encourage people at risk to get tested and minimize the stigma associated with HIV testing. NAPWA organizes National HIV Testing Day in partnership with the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other entities across the country and is celebrated every year on June 27.

NAPWA’s theme on National HIV Testing Day is “Take the test, Take Control.” An estimated 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, and that number grows by almost 50,000 every year according to the CDC. Additionally, one in seven people who have HIV don't know that they have the virus. If they are unaware that they are carrying the virus, they aren't getting the medical care they need to stay healthy and avoid passing HIV to others.

HIV medicines can keep people with HIV healthy for many years and reduce the chance of transmitting the virus to their sex partners so it is vital to get tested. The CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care, and that people with certain risk factors get tested more often. Gay and bisexual men, who are sexually active, should get tested at least once a year, but even more frequent testing is recommended depending on their risks.

IN RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY, THERE WILL BE SEVERAL LOCAL EVENTS HELD. On Friday June 26, free rapid HIV testing will be provided at the Government Center Metrorail Station, 101 NW First Street in Miami from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Broward House is hosting its National HIV Testing Day event with free HIV testing, refreshments, and music at 2800 N Andrews Avenue in Wilton Manors from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., also on June 26.

Comprehensive AIDS Program (CAP) at FoundCare is observing the day with free HIV tests, free health screenings, and a community yard sale on June 27 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. at FoundCare, 2330 South Congress Avenue in West Palm Beach.

Also in West Palm Beach, Urban League of Palm Beach County is offering free rapid HIV Testing with services available in English, Spanish, and Creole at 2107 Tamarind Avenue from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., June 27.

The Pride Center at Equality Park will have free HIV testing from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 2040 N. Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors, June 27.

Care Resource is collaborating with Bethel Apostolic Temple, the Rev. Darryl Baxter, and Churches United for the Prevention of HIV/AIDS to host United For Care health fair, at 1855 NW 119th St., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 27. A variety of free health screenings and community services will be offered.

The Fifth Annual Transgender Symposium Difficulties that trans people face Part II of III Sean McShee

Many discussions at the Fifth Annual Transgender Medical Symposium in Fort Lauderdale focused on the difficulties that transgender people face. These difficulties include body image, discrimination, and harassment.

Body image may present the most consistent challenge for trans people. Marilyn Volker (Sexologist) reported that some trans people buy male or female hormones from street dealers. Dr. Joanne Keatley (The Center for Excellence in Transgender Health) stressed that medical providers should accommodate their trans patient’s need for hormones. This would get these trans men and women off street hormones. Keatley felt that this could motivate transgender people to stay in clinical trials.

Keatley reported that some transwomen seek street plastic surgery in order to “pass” as the opposite gender, or to further express their gender identity. This street plastic surgery seeks to augment tissue in the breasts and buttocks with fillers. Pseudo“doctors” set up pumping parties to provide pseudo-fillers. At these parties, they inject transwomen with industrial grade silicone, caulk, or even motor oil. Some people may die on site. Eventually these pseudo-fillers will shift to other areas of the body.

Keatley also reported problems with data collection. The emphasis on using electronic health records (EHRs) makes this more critical. These records follow the patient to different sites. Data entered in the EHRs prompts the provider to ask certain questions. The current standard input form, however, lacks a way to input trans data.

Transwoman surgery leaves the prostate intact. If no one has input her “trans” status into the EHR, it will not prompt the provider about a prostate exam. Sites can request a form to collect transgender data for their site.

That data will not travel with the patient to other sites. Transgender advocates are now lobbying to have transgender data on the standard input form of the EHRs. In the Federal system, the Centers for

Disease Control (CDC) has the software to collect transgender data. The CDC, however, made collecting trans data optional. It also failed to give guidance to the states on how to collect trans data.

Keatley reported that discussion about trans people focuses primarily on transwomen. As a result, transmen become invisible.

While data collection refers to group level data, medical care occurs at the individual level. Multiple speakers at the symposium emphasized asking at intake which pronouns the patient prefers. They also recommended noting this preference in the records.

Keatley emphasized that not all health problems of trans people involve trans issues.

Health care providers should deal with the issues important to the patient, unless the patient requests a general checkup. Providers should access the health of the current body parts, but always respect patient’s current gender identity.

Keatley discussed the report, Injustice at Every Turn. This report analyzed the responses to a survey of transgenders. About 50 percent of the respondents had to educate their providers about how to provide care.

Another 19 percent reported that health providers had refused to provide care to them. In addition to providers refusing care, about 25 percent of respondents reported harassment or disrespect in their health provider’s office.

Keatley reported that serious problems occur in sex segregated secured facilities such as prisons, jails, mental hospitals, and gender specific bathrooms. According to the report Injustice at Every Turn, among incarcerated transgenders, 37 percent reported harassment by staff, 35 percent reported harassment by other inmates, and 15 percent reported sexual assault. Almost all speakers reported problems with gender specific bathrooms.

Social “bads” do not affect all transgender people, equally. These social “bads” tend to cluster among low-income, low-education, African-American trans people.

Boynton Arts District Recovers From Storm of the Century The area is again thriving

On Jan 10, 2014, an unexpected storm dropped more than 22 inches of rain on South Florida, flooding large swaths of Palm Beach County including the Boynton Beach Art District (BBAD) at 404-422 West Industrial Ave. For readers not familiar with West Industrial Ave., it’s a nondescript little road one block west of I-95 on the north side of Boynton Beach Boulevard. It’s worth a detour for the murals and graffiti that adorn the industrial buildings being morphed into an artists’ community.

“They called it the ‘storm of the century’ and said there’s supposed to be 100 years between these events, said Rolando Chang Barrero one of the leaders of the art movement. “I do know that none of us will store stuff on the floors any more.”

“Oh what a mess it was,” said Neighborhood Gallery owner Richard Beau Lieu. “Around 2 a.m.

I drove to the gallery. I had to leave my car up the street and wade through a couple of feet of water to the building. There was about six inches of water everywhere. I was able to salvage a few things but almost everything on the floor was destroyed.”

Beau Lieu was the first tenant at what would become BBAD having opened his gallery in 1986.

In 1989 he was instrumental in getting the area designated as the Boynton Beach Neighborhood Arts District, which allowed him to put up the sign.

Chang Barrero moved from Miami to Boynton Beach about five years ago and began the gentrification project that BBAD has become.

In addition to many art works, Chang Barrero lost thousands of dollars worth of sound equipment, lights and computers that he used for shows and displays.

“It was a horrible loss,” said Chang Barrero, “But worse was the fact that BBAD was scheduled to be the VIP Satellite Exhibit for the ArtPalmBeach in just thirteen days.”

And they did it. Friends, neighbors, collectors and clients descended on the property and cleaned it up in one week.

“People brought tools and food. Sam Ash Music Store provided electronics at wholesale prices and WLRN, among others, helped raise money.”

“We had to pay for it but the city gave us priority on the trash removal which helped clean up for the ArtPalmBeach project,” he continued.

“The City recognized the industrial location as Boynton Beach Neighborhood Arts District back in 1989,” said Debbie Coles-Dobay, Public Art Manager for the city. “But the property is privately owned and the artists rent space from the owners.”

“A city ordinance requires a license to paint a mural so it could get expensive to annually change the murals that BBAD has on the garage doors so we’re able to waive a lot of the paperwork and cost.”

Coles-Dobay sees BBAD as an important marketing tool for the city. “They attract people from all over including adults and kids,” she said.

“They are an arts magnet that draws art lovers and neophytes to the Art District and thence to the rest of the city’s offerings,” she added.

Among other programs and events, BBAD holds a monthly art walk and open mic on the 4th Thursday of every month. It features indoor and outdoor art displays, tours of the galleries, food trucks, music and more.

As of this writing, there are 11 artists, six studios and two galleries. According to Chang Barrero these are the same numbers at the time of the storm – just different people.

“There’s a shortage of gallery space in the area,” said Chang Barrero. “So demand is always high. And we tell new tenants to keep stuff off the floors.”

The Stonewall Ball was created in 2002 as a way to pay tribute to the Stonewall Riots that began the last weekend in June of 1969 in New York City. These riots mark the beginning of the LGBT civil rights movement.

The Ball is considered a targeted outreach event aimed toward decision makers, such as organization leaders and appointed and elected officials, and the people who speak, walk, vote or donate to support them. It is one of the only events in the county that brings the LGBT community together with their elected officials.

“It is a fun way to enjoy the evening for everyone,” said Jimmy Zoellner, Compass’ Development Director. “You can meet your elected officials and maybe make business connections or just come to meet old friends, make new friends, dance and party in one of the coolest spaces in Palm Beach County that has been transformed by International Party Designer, Bruce Sutka of Sutra Productions.”

This year organizers are expecting 1,200 to 1,500 attendees. The ball features a

silent auction and dancing and Compass encourages casual, cocktail and costumed attire, black and white themed.

“Silent auctions are a fun part of the evening! Hosting a silent auction helps to fund the evening as well as other Compass programming,” Zoellner said. “It is also an amazing way for our Compass Pride Business Alliance Members as well as other establishments to show their support and appreciation of Compass and the entire LGBTQ community.”

Each year at the event, Compass presents the Leadership Award to an elected or appointed official who has demonstrated a commitment to honoring and forwarding social justice initiatives that are inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Senator Jeff Clemens will be this year’s recipient.

Additionally, this year’s recipient of the Michael Brown Faces of the Community Award is Debbie Frazier. The award was established in 2008 to recognize an outstanding community member whose dedication to grassroots organizing promotes LGBT pride, diversity and public awareness.

When asked what Compass hopes to achieve with this year’s Ball, Zoellner said “we want everyone to enjoy an amazing evening but at the same time remember why we are here; to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of NYC in June of 1969, remembrance of our family and friends that we lost to AIDS, and the continued importance of HIV Prevention and awareness for our entire community – especially since the event falls on National HIV Testing Day this year.”

Complaints of chaos and disorganization reigned supreme during Saturday’s Stonewall Street Festival in Wilton Manors.

Parking problems continue to plague the Island City “Once again the city failed to provide enough parking for the festival,” said John Fugate.

Festival attendees told SFGN they witnessed cars being towed from the CVS Pharmacy at the intersection of what locals call, “5 Points.”

While Terry DeCarlo, Executive Director of the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida, said he was disappointed in the annual event, posting on his Facebook page that the 2015 edition was “one of the worst and embarrassing pride ‘festivals’ we have ever attended.”

DeCarlo observed that the festival was hastily put together.

“It seriously seemed like something that was thrown together in a few days!” DeCarlo ranted on Facebook.

Not all were negative about the event though.

“It is impossible to please everyone.

However, all parties who chose to be involved made Stonewall a success - period.

Attendance met or exceeded past years' Stonewalls, there were minimal public safety issues, and we had great performances by recognized entertainers,” said Wilton Manors City Commissioner Justin Flippen.

“For the city's first year taking the reigns of Stonewall, I'd assess it a success regardless of any nay-sayers. In planning for Stonewall 2016 I look forward to even more community participation to build on this year's success

and the pride we all get to show and call our own."

One week before the event Nick Berry, owner of Rumors and Courtyard Café on Wilton Drive, had serious concerns about the festival.

“Well I was kind of dismayed at the people who were putting this together,” he said.

“It was very unorganized. I felt it was going to be a failure. I was about ready to ask commission to pull the plug.”

But, he said, festival organizers pulled it together in the last week.

“There was a 100 percent turnaround.

And the crowd was as big as last year,” he said. “We set an all time record at Rumors.

Everything went smooth unlike past years.”

Berry also noted that all of the bar owners he spoke with agreed that the festival was a success and better than years past.

“All in all it was a fantastic success,” he said. “I was shocked at how they pulled it all together.”

David Altermatt, a member of the First Congregational Church of Fort Lauderdale, enjoyed the festival and felt festivalgoers were enjoying it as well.

Todd Sears To Receive Ettelbrick Award

LGBT activist Todd Sears met fellow activist Paula Ettelbrick during Sears’ work with the Stonewall Community Foundation, an organization that funds LGBT initiatives in New York City.

Ettelbrick became the first female executive director of Stonewall in 2010, launching Out in Front New York, a training initiative for LGBT leadership in nonprofits.

“I had the pleasure of working with Paula on a number of issues over the years, and will always remember how hard she pushed me – challenging me to be more of an activist (a word I’ve always been uncomfortable with— still am).” Sears posted on Facebook.

Now Sears and the organization he founded, Out Leadership, are being recognized for their efforts in developing corporate level LGBT leadership and visibility.

The Paula L. Ettelbrick Award, recognizes achievements by individuals or organizations in advancing LGBT attorneys. But the Out Leadership training and networking initiatives span the financial, legal, and insurance industries, with Out on the Street, Out in Law, and Out in Insurance and more recently a youth leadership initiative – Out NEXT. Sears has also launched Quorum, a networking group focused on advancing LGBT leadership in corporate boardrooms.

To date, Out Leadership counts 61 financial service organizations, law firms, and insurance companies in 134 countries among its members, a growing community that Sears jokingly referred to as "a good old gays' network," according to the Huffington Post.

Out Leadership’s network includes a growing number of fortune 500 financial, banking and consulting firms like American Express, Bloomberg, and Goldman Sachs.

Thirty-three Out Leadership companies along with 343 members of OPEN Finance, lent their signatures to a an amicus brief sent to the Supreme Court, stating their support of marriage equality in advance of the Obergefell v. Hodges arguments.

“Todd’s lifelong innovation and insight on inclusion has allowed for many major companies to benefit from diversity,” said Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) President Joseph West in a statement.

Sears will receive the award named for Ettelbrick by the MCCA at their Creating Pathways to Diversity Conference, June 29 in Washington, D.C. Sears says he’s honored to receive the award, calling the MCCA “an organization that has worked tirelessly, like Paula did, to increase diversity in the legal profession. It’s a great reminder to keep pushing myself to do more, to be a better leader and activist, just like Paula would have wanted.”

About Paula Ettelbrick Paula Louise Ettelbrick spent 25 years helping LGBT individuals and their families through her work with organizations such as Lambda Legal Defense, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and the International Lesbian and Gay Human Rights Commission.

Ettelbrick assisted thousands of LGBT individuals during that time, and during her time as an educator and mentor at New York University, Columbia University and the University of Michigan.

She passed away in 2011 after an ongoing struggle with cancer.

First Comes Marriage Equality Then Comes Divorce Equality

Two years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court decided United States v. Windsor and in so doing, opened the door for marriage equality in many states across the country.

Now the court is considering a challenge to same-sex marriage bans in four states and whether states must recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. In the event the court rules in favor of marriage equality, same sex marriage will be legal in all fifty states and U.S. territories.

Even though marriage equality came to Florida earlier this year, the issue of divorce equality was unclear. Fortunately, it appears this issue has been resolved by a Second District Court of Appeal in Florida which ruled that Florida must grant a same sex divorce.

While it usually does not include a big catered party (except for the occasional Divorce Party), Divorce Equality is just as important as Marriage Equality. What is Divorce Equality? It is the ability of same sex couples to divorce. Why is Divorce Equality just as important? To not be able to divorce would keep a same sex couple’s financial affairs intertwined and more importantly would significantly impact the welfare and stability of a child parented by a same sex couple.

So now that gay couples can legally divorce, what does that mean? Simply put it means that same sex couples seeking a divorce from their spouse must file a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage in circuit court.

The State of Florida is a "no-fault" state and therefore, it is not necessary to prove that your spouse did anything wrong in order for you to obtain a divorce. In fact, courts are authorized to grant you a divorce even if the other spouse does not want or consent to the divorce. All that's required to obtain a divorce in Florida is that one of the parties to the marriage must reside in Florida for six months prior to filing the Petition, the marriage must be "irretrievably broken" and one of the parties must testify to these facts under oath.

If you are the party who initiates the Divorce, you are the Petitioner. The other party is called the Respondent. After service of the petition, the Respondent has twenty days to file an official response; called an Answer. After the Answer is filed, both spouses are required to exchange certain documents. Once all required documents have been filed, the case is ready to be set for trial. A trial may last anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks depending upon the amount of evidence and the complexity of the issues involved. However, Florida Law requires that before trial, the unhappy couple must attend mediation where they are encouraged to negotiate a settlement of all the issues.

When people think about divorce, especially childless couples, one of the questions they ask is how is our property and debt divided? First, property and debt division is an important consideration in every divorce even if you do not always feel great about bringing it up and it is understandably one of the most troublesome issues in a divorce proceeding.

The court has the responsibility to fairly distribute the marital and non-marital property and debt of the spouses. Marital property and debt is generally any items acquired during the marriage. And no, it does NOT matter whose name the property is titled in or whose name the debt is acquired in.

Many clients are surprised when I tell them that their 401k or pension is a marital asset and their spouse is entitled to fifty percent of the value of the retirement account from the date of the marriage to the date of the filing of the Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.

Also, many clients are surprised to find out that credit card debt incurred, during the marriage; in the name of one spouse only is a marital debt, for which both parties are generally equally responsible for in a divorce.

On the other hand, non-marital property is pretty much everything that you owned before you got married.

In certain situations, alimony may be an issue. Alimony in a divorce is based primarily on two important factors: need and the ability to pay. Florida courts have the authority to grant alimony to either party in a divorce. The alimony award could be either permanent, rehabilitative, durational, bridge-the-gap, or a lump sum award.

In awarding alimony the Court must consider whether the spouse who is requesting alimony has the need for the support AND that the other spouse has the financial ability to pay support. Assuming that burden is met, there are several other statutory factors that a court can then consider in determining what, if anything would be a fair alimony award. Alimony award factors include but are not limited to, the standard of living established during the

marriage, the duration of the marriage, the age and the physical and emotional condition of each party and the financial resources of each.

Also, if there are children involved, the court will need to establish a parenting plan. In determining a parenting plan, you and your former spouse must determine a time sharing schedule for your child which includes how many days will they spend with each parent, where will they attend school, how will the holidays and birthdays and other special events be shared and how much child support shall be paid.

Each situation has its own set of facts and its important when considering a divorce that you consult with an attorney experienced in this area of the law.

Marketing campaigns reflect support for LGBT customers How LGBT-Friendly are Banks?

LGBT-friendly ad campaigns, like this one from Wells Fargo, have been prominent in many banks during Pride Month. HRC annual ranks banks on their outreach to the LGBT community.

For Pride Month, multiple banks have been showing their support for their LGBT customers with advertising and ATM signage.

Wells Fargo started their campaign with the release of its new commercial featuring two women learning sign language. At the end of the ad, it’s revealed they are a couple learning to sign to their new adoptive daughter, who is deaf. When they meet her, they sign “Hello beautiful, we are going to be your new mommies.”

“Serving every customer is core to our vision and values,” the bank said in a statement. “Wells Fargo’s support for the LGBT community aligns with our broader commitment to diversity –to serve diverse customers, to hire, develop and retain diverse team members and to encourage team members to value and respect each other for their differences. Our advertising content reflects our company’s values, and represents the diversity of the communities we serve.”

Also, on ATMs across the country, LGBT imagery was on screens. Customers saw a gay couple cuddling up to each other, followed by a second screen reading, “Join us in celebrating LGBT Pride. Together is a beautiful thing.”

Wells Fargo was not the only bank to participate in Pride Month. Chase customers saw a screen reading “Just Be You” on 18,000 ATM screens and digital signage.

“JPMorgan Chase supports and celebrates the diversity of our customers and our employees,” said Maribel Ferrer, a media representative for the company. “This

month, our employee group PRIDE will host more than 40 events across 26 cities and 10 countries and participate in community events across the globe.”

Both banks regularly rank on the Human Rights Campaign’s corporate equality index, which judges companies by how LGBT friendly they are both to their customers and employees.

Merrill Lynch, which conducts wealth management under Bank of America, is another LGBT-friendly financial institution.

It started offering same-sex domestic partners health and insurance benefit plans in 2013. In South Florida, it has been a partner in putting on the National LGBTQ Task Force Gala, Winter Party, the Miami and Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and the Pride Center’s “Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South” showcase.

As to be expected, reactions to the advertising was mixed. While some applauded the banks, others threatened to leave as customers. This included the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, a Christian organization.

They decided to move their business to BB&T, instead.

When Franklin Graham decided to pull his non-profit’s money out of Wells Fargo over a pro-LGBT ad, commentators were quick to point out that the new bank he chose, BB&T, was pretty gay friendly as well. SFGN decided to look some of the nation top banks to see just how friendly the banking industry is.

Graham Evangelistic Association’s banking business away from Wells Fargo is based on the bank using corporate advertising to promote lifestyles that are counter to what God’s Word teaches,” Franklin Graham said in a statement to SFGN. “This is not about a business being gay friendly, it’s about whether the business is using s t o c k h o l d e r ’s money to promote a lifestyle that is not biblical.”

Franklin is the president of the organization and the son of Billy Graham.

While BB&T may not have active advertising in support of LGBT customers, it does get involved in local events – it has been an active participant in Miami Beach Pride for years.

“Our mission is to help our clients achieve economic success and financial security regardless of their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity. As a company and a culture, BB&T embraces diversity and inclusion for our associates and in all aspects of our business,” said Cynthia Williams, BB&T’s chief corporate communications officer. “However, we do not take formal positions on non-banking or social issues.”

Poverello’s Bowl-A-Thon Celebrates its 25th Anniversary

2015 marks a full quarter century that the Poverello Bowling to Fight Hunger charity fundraiser has been in existence. This year the bowl-a-thon will be held on Saturday August 15. What started out as a relatively small bowling event held in Wilton Manors has grown into a large successful affair.

It is now being held at Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac which has the ability to effectively accommodate the bigger, upscale event.

Last year all of the ally’s 56 lanes were sold out. There were 280 bowlers and numerous spectators who came to cheer them on. But the first fundraising activities at Poverello date back 27 years when a small group of people joined together with a humble desire; to give some hope and a little help to people living with HIV/AIDS. It all started in 1989 when Poverello Founder Father Bill Collins and current CEO, Thomas Smith joined forces to assist those who were HIV positive and most in need. The first fundraiser they collaborated on was a Christmas dinner party. The money raised at this event was used to make over 250 gift boxes that were filled with basic living essentials and then hand delivered to people with HIV/AIDS in the community. The very next year, Poverello held its first bowl-a-thon. The proceeds from that event, and every bowl-a-thon since, have gone toward helping Poverello provide life-saving food, nutritional counseling and wellness services to those living with HIV/AIDS who subsist at or below the Federal poverty level. Poverello CEO, Thomas Smith recently said, “Over the course of the last 24 years the annual

bowling event has raised nearly 1.5 million dollars.”

The outpouring of support by the community, both in terms of time and donations, is truly impressive and a testament to the communities commitment to those living with HIV/AIDS. Poverello’s Events Coordinator, Kevin Clevenger recently stated, “We are very excited to say that Bowling to Fight Hunger 2015 is well on its way to being was a sellout.” Mr. Clevenger said, “As of June 12, over 40 lanes have already been claimed by teams with just 16 more available to the public.” He recommends that if people want to be a part of this event that they do not wait. He said, “Go as soon as possible to www.poverello. org and look for the section entitled “BowlA-Thon” to get all the information needed and register.”

He is also seeking sponsors for the event and businesses willing to donate items for the silent auction and raffle. The silent auction and raffle are a central part of the bowl-a-thon’s festivities and a chief source of revenue for the charity. Pavement Pride Fest Not So Festive Holiday Park, here we come

s I begin this editorial, I recognize I am treading on thin ice. Wait, this is South Florida in June, so make that walking barefoot on hot pavement.

I am here today to comment on the Wilton Manors attempt to conduct a Pride festival in June on Wilton Drive. It failed. The hearse in the parade said it all. Yes, we can compliment the effort, but you have to live with the result.

In this case, the daytime activities were sparsely attended and driven more by crass commercialism than spiritual advancement. Basically, you had a vendor fest on the Drive in the middle of the summer on a 100-degree day.

Pride festivals have to be more than businesses giving away balloons and entertainers performing on a stage.

They need to be a unifying and galvanizing force for the community. A late evening parade and a street festival would have been fine, but the city of Wilton Manors refused to scale down the event.

Still, keep in mind that closing the street and opening the bars does not make a Pride festival. Hell, they do that in Austin, Texas every weekend at 10 p.m. If Wilton Manors was smart, we ought to send a city commissioner or two over there to see how it is done, and how it has generated immense revenues and created an artistic community.

Heck, their motto is ‘Keep Austin Weird.’ That’s a title Wilton Manors should own!

Some self-disclosure needs to be made. In the last year, I became chair of Pride Fort Lauderdale, which used to be known as Pride South Florida. The group ran the Wilton Manors Street fair last year, and they lost so much money doing it, they could not run a festival in Holiday Park this past spring, as they had for years and years.

I became a volunteer and eventual chair for Pride South Florida, which has now changed its name to Greater Fort Lauderdale Pride, and moved its Holiday Park festival to October 10 and 11. I think it is going to be a home run, and here is why. Instead of talking about what was, I would rather share with you what will be.

First, we have partnered with the Greater Fort

Lauderdale Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, to generate publicity and promotions.

Second, we have partnered with the Miami and Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival to use the park setting for evening films indoors and possibly outdoors, tying into their film festival the same week.

Third, we have joined with the Stonewall Library for them to set up a historical display and exhibit in the Rotunda as community members enter the festival during National Coming Out Day, which is October 10.

Fourth, we have invited various AIDS organizations to conduct educational seminars and on the spot testing with a host of their mobile testing units.

Fifth, we have partnered with SunServe and the City of Fort Lauderdale to have a closing party Sunday night, for Pridelines Youth Services, October 11 on the historical Himmarrshee Street in downtown Fort Lauderdale, reaching out to city residents in a mainstream venue.

Sixth, we are going to have politicians, but don’t look for proclamations and speeches. The media and elected officials will join in promoting our gay softball leagues with a celebrity softball game. Expect Debbie Wasserman Shultz to field grounders instead of questions.

Seventh, we are going to have a children’s and family section promoting a petting zoo with donkeys, chickens, and even those little ponies kids can take rides on.

Eighth, we are going to have entertainment to be sure, but more than that, older LGBT members will find small seminars with retirement planning, financial counseling, parenting, and legal advice.

The bottom line is that a festival has to be more than businesses selling hot tubs and bars giving away beer.

You have to realize that with Mack Mixers, business and professional groups, we already interact often, even on a weekly basis through various functions and non-profits.

Based on that, we have to do more than just throw a party. At Holiday Park, we are all together, in the shades and the trees, with an indoor auditorium. It gives us an opportunity to bring people closer, share the moment a little bit more.

We are working on a parade too, and if we can pull it off, I can guarantee you there won’t be a

Hearse in it. The bottom line is that the ideas we have need to be implemented and executed. We have volunteers, but we need more, and experienced persons at that. We need your help.

Running a festival like this is a challenge like I have never faced. I hesitate to criticize those who gave their time and effort to do so in Wilton Manors last week. But as I told the city commissioners last January when they expected Pride Fort Lauderdale to run it for them again this year, it was not a wise choice, neither financially prudent or socially practical. This past weekend again proved that to be so.

As the publisher of SFGN, it is my duty to make sure our paper reports on the Wilton Manors festival, its finances, and its fortunes. Last year, this newspaper unhesitatingly wrote about Pride South Florida’s misfortunes, and this year, when appropriate, our reporters will independently write about the job Pride Fort Lauderdale is doing, regardless of my title or position.

Unfortunately, as people are saying on Facebook, the Wilton Manors festival appeared to fall flat on its face. One of our more respected community leaders, Terry DeCarlo, now running Orlando’s pride center, even called the event ‘pathetic.’ It will now be up to Pride Fort Lauderdale to see if our team can rise to the occasion and do what Wilton Manors could not.

Let’s move from what just happened and see now what we can all do. Let’s say thanks to those that tried, and welcome to those who volunteer. There is much to be done, and less than 120 days to do it. Let’s work together to celebrate Pride in a year that we will gather not just as domestic partners, but married couples.

Let’s work to make Greater Fort Lauderdale Pride an event we can all celebrate and commend.

What’s Happened To Our Pride Parade?

As is usually the case at the Wilton Manors Gay Pride Parade, the majority of large Gay businesses that rake in the most money off of the members of the Gay community here couldn't be bothered to put a float in the parade, which makes the parade a very short one and not really worthy of Wilton Manors and the Fort Lauderdale area when one takes into consideration how large the Gay community is in this area, along with the thousands of Gay tourists who stay in the area while on vacation.

them worthy of the increase in business they received from the parade while they benefitted from the advertising done by the organizers of the parade which came at no cost to the Gay businesses along the parade route.

It's rather sad to see area Gay owners of large established businesses not put out any funding to celebrate and commemorate the Stonewall riots by being represented with a float in our area parade when one takes into consideration that the Stonewall riots brought the Gay rights movement into the national spotlight and made it possible for Gay business owners to openly operate Gay businesses without having to engage in regularly paying off members of city police departments and buying protection from members of organized crimes so that they could stay in business.

You’ll read a lot of marriage-equality articles and news items in the next few weeks thanks to the pending ruling on the subject by the U.S. Supreme Court — but likely none like this one.

People like me, who have been in the fight for LGBT equality almost 50 years now, had never allowed ourselves to believe that this day might come, and so we came up with what was a sort of denial. Our statements were: We don’t need marriage since it comes from a tradition of religion, and religion is the ultimate oppressor of the LGBT community for thousands of years. We also stated that we had no need to copy a heterosexual institution, or need for a government blessing.

In 1969, we were attempting to begin the process of defining ourselves, rather than accepting the definition with which society had labeled us. That identification took many forms but mostly it became anti-institution — whatever that institution was, including marriage.

My reaction has “evolved” over the years and when the chance came to marry, Jason and I did. Up until the very ceremony, I believed to the bottom of my soul that it was just a piece of paper we were signing, which might give us some new rights but it would not fundamentally change our lives. That was a total misjudgment.

As the judge was performing the ceremony, I found myself so emotionally overcome. Was it the long battle to get there or was it my feelings for Jason, or a mixture of the two? That night when we went home, like all couples who’ve been together for a long time, we went through our normal routine. At one point I looked over at Jason, and he had a look on his face that I have not seen since my parents were alive.

In that instant, I knew what marriage was, and no couple should be denied that special feeling.

Florida’s Flag Must Go Jason Parsley

After years of debating whether the Confederate battle flag should fly on government property a consensus is finally being reached against a symbol that is clearly racist.

There is no other symbol in America that represents racism more than the Confederate battle flag. The idea that the flag stands for anything else but racism is preposterous.

Let’s look at history — the Confederate flag began as a symbol of slavery and later used by groups opposed to Civil Rights. This shouldn't be up for debate.

Republican leaders of South Carolina have rightfully called for its removal in Charleston and there appears to be a growing movement in Mississippi calling for the legislature to redesign the state flag.

This is a debate the LGBT community should be paying attention to because no symbol of hate should be revered. The LGBT community should condemn this flag — this symbol — in the strongest terms possible.

We must stand with our black brothers and sisters. This fight against hate affects us all.

We have borne the brunt of hate time and time again. So we know what it feels like.

And that brings me to Florida.

Our flag appears to be benign enough, but it also has a connection to the Confederate flag. The red bars featured on our flag are known as St. Andrew’s Cross, a prominent symbol of the Confederacy — a symbol that is basis of the Confederate battle flag. The only difference is one features stars inside the bars while our bars are solid red.

The man who proposed this flag, Francis P. Fleming, was a known segregationist, who served in the Confederate army. He was also the Governor of Florida.

Fleming said he wanted to add the red bars so our flag would not look like a white flag of truce or surrender. Coincidentally Alabama also added red bars just a few years before we did. According to historical records that flag was modeled after the flag of Alabama’s Civil War infantry.

While there doesn’t appear to be any legislative records linking Florida’s addition of the St. Andrew’s Cross to the Confederacy or Civil War, it’s safe to assume the connection.

Besides Fleming serving in the Civil War his ties to the confederacy are well established long after the war was over with him serving as commander of the R.E. Lee Camp of Confederate Veterans; aide-decamp to General John B. Gordon, Florida Division of the United Confederate Veterans; and president of the Old Confederate Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home Association.

Further evidence is found in one of Fleming’s most notorious acts as Governor where he removed from office the state’s only black judge, James Dean of Monroe County in 1889, because he had married a white man to a black woman, which was illegal in the state (even though the groom claimed he was mulatto).

In 2002 Jeb Bush posthumously reinstated the judge.

"This happened in a different space and time in our state's history, but irrespective of how long it's taken us to right this wrong, I think it's more than appropriate to do so," Bush said at the time.

I agree with Bush on that. And the same could be said for our flag. It was designed in a different space and time in our history, but there’s nothing from stopping us from redesigning it again. This time making sure it has no connection, no link, however slight, to our racist past.

Alabama Flag.

There are many who like to downplay slavery as the reason for the Civil War, but I think the motive can be summed up by this speech from the Vice President of the Confederacy, Alexander Stephens.

Here’s just a snippet: “Its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. This truth has been slow in the process of its development, like all other truths in the various departments of science… … Many governments have been founded upon the principle of the subordination and serfdom of certain classes of the same race; such were and are in violation of the laws of nature.

Our system commits no such violation of nature’s laws. With us, all of the white race, however high or low, rich or poor, are equal in the eye of the law.

Not so with the negro. Subordination is his place. He, by nature, or by the curse against Canaan, is fitted for that condition which he occupies in our system.”

So you see the Confederacy was based on the belief that not all men were created equal. And the above speech says it all. This was America’s great shame and it should not be celebrated — ever. The Confederacy is a part of our history, there’s no getting away from that, but that doesn’t mean we need to throw it in the black community’s face.

That’s why it’s time for Florida to change its flag.

The Charlatans’ 'Modern Nature' Returning to Their Old Glory

Certain albums seem to fit better when placed in an environment or location. They might make more of an impact when listened to during a specific season or time of the year as well. For example, Christmas music (holiday music) is unlistenable at any other time. I would argue that holiday music is unlistenable period, but that is another story.

It was unbearable when the ice cream truck circled the neighborhood where I lived in L.A. blaring "Silent Night" in July. That might seem like an extreme example, but for some reason listening to The Cure in Florida doesn’t feel quite the same as it did at the height of winter in Colorado.

The Charlatans’ new LP, “Modern Nature” that actually came out in January of this year sounds like the perfect record for this time of year. I revisited it recently and now with the warmer weather baring down, I truly felt what the band were going for and it is definitely worth a mention. “Modern Nature” just feels like a summer record.

The Charlatans, along with the Stone Roses were arguably the leaders of the Manchester, UK scene, which dominated a lot of popular music in the 90’s and was kind of like the U.S. Grunge scene’s groovy cousin. It was sonically a throwback to the psychadelic 60’s but given a more modern approach. After their second album they began embracing the 70’s and they never were quite the same giving up some of their originality in favor of trying to sound like other bands from different eras.

But, being more than a mere cover band they channeled a more distinct Rolling Stone sound that they revisit here on the excellent track “Trouble Understanding.” They have opened for the Rolling Stones on occasion and obviously are fans.

A large part of The Charlatans early success can be attributed to their extremely talented keyboardist Rob Collins, who tragically died in 1996. His signature style was a trademark of their sound and a large part of what made them special. Without his talents, something felt missing for some time. On “Modern Nature” they have returned to the 60’s and increased his trademark style of keyboards on several tracks but are still embracing the 70’s again as well.

With “Modern Nature,” the Charlatans’ sound seems to have matured which makes sense since they are older and more mature, and it feels polished. With each album, this being number 12, they have always added new sounds and experimented with their sound.

On "Modern Nature," they are branching out again with violins on “Keep Enough.”

“Come Home Baby” and “Let The Good Times Be Never Ending,” lead singer and seemingly ageless Tim Burgess is backed by a gospel choir.

The latter track is underscored by an acoustic disco beat no less. "Emilie" is a highlight and reminds one of "Hotel California." The melodies here are all pretty tight and this is their best album since "Simpatico" in 2006 and one of their best since their start. soflagaynews //

Nestled in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, artist Rubem Robierb has brought his creative flair to Shade Post. How, you ask? Through his butterfly themed mural titled "Metamorph-Us." Robierb got involved with the project when he collaborated with acquaintance Kayce Armstrong (owner of Shade Post) to depict a positive transformation in that neighborhood. They have also collaborated on her past fashion line, Art of Shade.

So why paint butterflies? To this, he replied, there was "nothing better than the butterflies to represent that transformation."

Although he has not been formally trained in art and is instead selftaught, Robierb has been professionally painting for about 10 years.

His debut was in France during 2005. Robeirb describes his style as "poems without words" and names Andy Warhol and Banksy as his inspiration. "Pop and street art are my thing," he added.

In regards to why he thought Fort Lauderdale was an appropriate location for his art, Robeirb replied, "It's a matter of time, Fort Lauderdale just like Miami did, will become an art city. It is just not totally developed yet."

Robierb has been married to Sam Champion, weather man formerly for Good Morning America and now the Weather Channel, for 2 and 1/2 years.

When asked what it was like being married to someone who is famous, he replied, "It's exactly the same than being married with someone really popular in the neighborhood, but in a much bigger scale."

And that's what you call a humble artist, ladies and gentlemen.

Conchita Wurst is an Austrian pop recording artist and drag queen portrayed by Tom Neuwirth (born 6 November 1988). Wurst came to international attention for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014 as Austria's entrant with the song "Rise Like a Phoenix."

Openly gay, Neuwirth uses masculine pronouns when referring to himself but feminine pronouns to describe Wurst. Neuwirth has stated that he does not identify as transgender, but as a man. His sexual orientation is homosexual and he also described himself as a drag queen.

In an interview he also explained that Conchita is Spanish slang for vagina and Wurst is German slang for penis. Neuwirth asserted that the inclusion of the beard as part of the drag queen character was "a statement to say that you can achieve anything, no matter who you are or how you look." The inclusion of a beard as part of the drag look was not unique, having been pioneered in the 1970s by The Cockettes in San Francisco and the Bloolips in London.

The Cockettes were a psychedelic theater troupe founded by Hibiscus (George Harris) in the fall of 1969. The troupe was formed out of a group of hippies, men and women, that were living together communally in Haight-Ashbury. Hibiscus came to live with them because of their preference to dressing outrageously and proposed the idea of putting their lifestyle on the stage performing all original songs in elaborate genderfuck costumes. They gained an underground cult following that led to mainstream exposure. In 1971, The Cockettes released the short film Tricia's Wedding, lampooning the wedding ceremony of Richard Nixon's daughter, Tricia Nixon; Nixon's chief of staff H. R. Haldeman arranged a secret screening of the film for White House staffers.

The Cockettes were the subject of a 2002 documentary, The Cockettes.

Bette Bourne (born Peter Bourne 22 September 1939) is a British actor, drag queen and activist. He became involved with the Gay Liberation Front in the early 70s and was inspired by the strength of one man at a GLF meeting who was wearing a denim skirt. ‘When I put the

Miss Coco Peru is the drag persona of American actor, comedian and drag performer Clinton Leupp, known for her role in the 1999 independent film “Trick” and for her series of live theater performances. Recognizable by her "trademark copper-toned flip hairdo," She has appeared in a number of supporting and gueststarring roles in film and television. For 20 years Peru has starred in various "one-woman shows" across the U.S. and other countries, and hosted LGBT events. Since 2005 Peru has appeared in the "Conversations with Coco" series in which she "interviews and celebrates the lives and careers of the LGBT community's favorite icons."

Peru's guests have included Bea Arthur, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.

Two-Spirit People is a term used by some indigenous North Americans to describe or label gender-variant individuals in their communities. Historically, non-Native Americans anthropologists used the term berdache to identify an individual fulfilling one of many mixed gender roles in Native American tribes but that term has now fallen out of favor. Third and fourth gender roles traditionally embodied by two-spirit people include performing work and wearing clothing associated with both men and women. Not all tribes have rigid gender roles, but, among those that do, some consider there to be at least four genders: masculine man, feminine man, masculine woman, feminine woman. The presence of male-bodied two-spirits was a fundamental institution among most tribal peoples and , both male- and female-bodied twospirits have been documented in over 130 North America tribes, in every region of the continent.

s there any food item that is as regionally specialized as the hot dog? What a New Yorker thinks is a proper hot dog wouldn’t satisfy a Chicagoan and they’d both turn up their noses at an Atlanta version of the same dish.

some of the variations are in the toppings, but there are other modifications made, from the bun to the sausage itself. Ask anyone in a melting pot such as South Florida what constitutes a perfect wiener and you’d think they were as individual as snowflakes. Below are some of the regional versions of the dish.

New York City

Whether you get your dog from a sidewalk vendor, Gray’s Papaya on the Upper West Side or the original Nathan’s in Coney Island (which should not be confused with the chain bearing the same name), it’s going to come with a pale, deli-style yellow mustard and either sauerkraut or onions stewed in tomato paste. Just like New Yorkers themselves, the hot dogs there are a little slimmer than you’ll find in the rest of the country, and most likely are a Kosher brand, such as Sabrett's or Best.

Los Angeles

Arizona

In Tucson and Phoenix you get a Tex-Mex take; with a bacon-wrapped dog topped with mustard, mayo, chopped tomatoes, onions, jalapeños and pinto beans, served in a steamed bolillo roll. Some even add guacamole, salsa verde, and cheese.

My father refers to California as “The Granola State” saying all that you’ll find there are “fruits, nuts and flakes.” While I haven’t had a hot dog covered in any of those, I have enjoyed the traditional chili cheese dog, as well as a "Danger Dog" a Mexican-style bacon-wrapped hot dog with grilled onions, jalapeños, bell peppers, mustard, ketchup and salsa. At Oki Dog, in West Hollywood, and at Pink’s you’ll get two (or more!) franks on a flour tortilla, covered with chili and pastrami, wrapped up like a burrito.

Detroit/Ohio

“More is more” in the Windy City, where Vienna beef franks are taken from a hot water bath popped into a steamed poppy seed bun then layered with yellow mustard, bright green relish, chopped raw onion, pickle spear, sliced tomato, and tiny hot “sport” peppers, before a sprinkling of celery salt finishes it off. Ask for catsup and you’re going to get a dirty look.

There a constant debate as to whether the combination of a hot dog smothered in yellow mustard, beefy beanless chili, shredded Cheddar cheese, and raw onion started in Michigan or Ohio. And neither one explains why it is called a “Coney.”

Atlanta

The pork and beef blended sausage is ordered "dragged through the garden" and topped with a Duke’s mayonnaise-based coleslaw.

Kansas City

The Franken-wienie served in K.C. is blend of a Reuben and a hot dog. The grilled frank is served topped with sauerkraut and melted Swiss cheese on a sesame seed bun.

Rhode Island/Maine

This is where they take the term “red” hot seriously. The sausages are bright red, have a natural casing and are grilled. In Rhode Island they’re topped with meat sauce, a mustard, chopped onion, and a dash of celery salt and served in steamed side-cut roll. In Maine they serve them in a buttered and toasted roll.

In Clifton, New Jersey, the hot dogs are deepfried and served with a blend of mustard, onions, carrots and cabbage.

The International Dog

The Quebecois in Montréal order their steamies or toasties (steamed or griddle fried hot dogs) topped with coleslaw, onion, mustard, relish, and occasionally paprika or chili powder. Brazilians in São Paulo cut their weenie lengthwise and top it with tomato vinaigrette, corn, peas, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, fried shoestring potatoes, and top it with mashed potatoes. It’s so messy it is usually served in a plastic bag. Chileans enjoy a “complete” which can include mashed avocado, chopped tomatoes, mayonnaise, sauerkraut, chili, salsa verde and cheese. In Colombia the franks are topped with ketchup, mustard, salsa rosada, mayonnaise, pineapple sauce, cheese and crumbled potato chips. Guatemalans enjoy theirs in a messy mixture of guacamole, boiled cabbage, mayonnaise and mustard, while South Koreans enjoy something similar to a corn dog.

Then there are those places where a hot dog isn’t really a hot dog at all. In Milwaukee, like the rest of Wisconsin it will be a bratwurst steamed in beer and served with mustard and sauerkraut. D.C offers a “half-smoked,” a pork and beef combo topped with herbs, onion, and chili sauce.

Over that time period local critics have applauded the theater’s willingness to tackle little known shows and turn them into hits.

Don’t fret though. Slow Burn isn’t closing its doors — just moving a little further south where they’ll take up residence at the Amaturo Theatre at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

Miami couple Amari and Natalie Vendely-Salgado will share their remarkable story of love and transitioning on the CBS reality series "The Briefcase."

Once a lesbian couple, Amari and Natalie are now a heterosexual couple raising their children. Since Amari's transition to male they have remained in love and committed to their relationship.

It was an easy decision for Natalie to stand by her man.

"I never had a preference," she told SFGN. "I've been with women as much as with men."

Natalie also said that prior to their relationship, she wasn't looking to get involved with anyone.

"When I met Amari things changed," she said. "He showed me things I had never seen and made me feel in a way that I had never felt before."

The couple met online when Amari was still living as a woman. "We skyped and we texted," Amari recalled. "We met for the first time when I moved from California to Miami." He said that technically they were not married, but they had obtained a domestic partnership when they were still considered a lesbian couple.

Though they were quite happy together, Amari knew that something wasn't right.

"I had struggled with this for many years," he said. "Then I saw the documentary “Becoming Chaz,” the documentary about Chaz Bono's transition. Watching it made me feel as though I could identify as who I really was. It's what I needed to do in order to stay happy."

"I wasn't surprised," Natalie said. "If this was going to make him happy and feel complete, then I'm all for it. I fell in love with the person, not the gender."

The reaction from their immediate neighbors has been overwhelmingly positive. "The neighbors on both sides saw “The Briefcase” camera crews and asked us what was going on," Amari recalled.

"They were surprised, but supportive."

According to CBS publicity, the premise of "The Briefcase" is to focus on a person, a couple, or a family after they receive a briefcase filled with cash. Each episode is a self-contained story featuring new people.

Amari and Natalie said that the money they received was a tremendous help to them at a time of mounting debt.

Amari hopes that the fame that comes with “The Briefcase” will open the door for him to do some advocacy work.

"I have never done public speaking before but I've been told that I should," he said. "I'm shy, but I want to change a piece of the world--that may overcome my shyness."

Both of them acknowledged that their episode would no doubt be controversial "You have to keep moving forward," Natalie said.

"Nobody has to accept you, but they have to respect you," Amari said.

Photo Credit: Channel 4 Television I don’t watch Logo, the nominally LGBT cable network, often. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the art of drag on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” or enjoy endless reruns of “Will and Grace” and “Golden Girls.” But, that’s a discussion for another day.

While watching an episode my partner recorded of one of the aforementioned sitcoms, I ran across a promo for two new series on the network, “Cucumber” and “Banana.”

Thank God for On Demand because the short, 8-episode series had already concluded their runs.

“Cucumber” and “Banana” are the British companion series from Russell T. Davies, creator of “Queer as Folk,” and I can’t believe I didn’t know about them. I don’t know why Logo doesn’t have the arts & entertainment editor of SFGN on their press list to promote them, but again, that’s a discussion for another day.

The inspiration for the titles came from a research study Davies discovered that came up with four descriptions for the relative hardness of a male erection: tofu, banana without the peel, banana with the peel and cucumber.

Needless to say, the supermarket will serve as both a location and a metaphor throughout both interwoven series.

“Cucumber” explores the lives of Henry Best, a 40-something insurance company manager (Vincent Franklin), and his “longsuffering” boyfriend of nine years, Lance Sullivan (Cyril Nri). Like so many couples, they are comfortable, but both yearn for different things—Henry, the unattainable affection of any young twink, and Lance, a physical relationship with Henry.

After a threesome gone wrong, Henry walks out and takes up with two 20 year olds living in a tenement loft in downtown Manchester.

Freddie (Freddie Fox) is the boy of Henry’s dreams, smooth and good looking, confident and able to land any trick he desires. Dean (Fisayo Akinade) is a likeable young black man who is happy to join in on Freddie’s bedroom escapades, but also manages to keep busy in his own right.

“Banana” offers viewers 25-minute stories told through the eyes of Freddie, Dean and their friends. There’s Scotty (Letitia Wright), a young lesbian who becomes infatuated with a married woman she encountered at the market; Josh (Luke Newberry), an 18-yearold student who tricks with Freddie and then rushes to tell his best friend she’s too young to get married; and Aiden, a handsome, muscular hunk who must choose between physical beauty and character.

In one of the most powerful episodes, the show touches on transgender issues in the story of Helen, a trans woman whose boyfriend refuses to accept their relationship is over and terrorizes her through cyberbullying and stalking.

Many gay men in South Florida will quickly relate to Henry and Lance and the joys and pitfalls of their relationship, but it’s the insights into the sexual and gender fluidity of the contemporary young people in “Banana” that is most illuminating. No, they didn’t invent sex—every generation thinks they did—but the game is definitely changing. Both series are witty and uplifting, but can also be dark and disturbing. But, hey, that’s life.

RIP Cole Tucker Hunter Houston

An actor who performed under the name Cole Tucker has passed away, reports the website Str8UpGayPorn.com. Tucker, the website claims, was also known as Rick Karp.

He won the Gay Performer of the Year Award at the 1998 Grabbys.

Tucker, reportedly, died June 7 in Palm Springs, Calif. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations be made to the Desert AIDS Project in Palm Springs.

One of Tucker’s more mentioned films is “3 Degrees of Humiliation” in which he portrays a dominant top. Tucker worked for Chi Chi LaRue, Titan and several other now defunct studios.

“Cole Tucker was a character he created to entertain the world,” said TitanMen’s Keith Webb. “Rick Karp was the sweet, funny, smart, generous and hardworking man I knew. Rick was not only an amazing performer, he was also a personal friend and our realtor in Palm Springs for the past seven years.”

A memorial service was held Saturday, June 13 in Palm Springs.

nline webcam modeling is more socially acceptable than escorting by both customers and models. There is a real distance between the model and his audience, unlike an escort who is likely to be far more intimate with his customer.

Both buyers and sellers consider escorting a seedier business. Online is obviously safer with no physical contact since models don’t meet their customer in person.

Zakk Matthews is a live online webcam model on Flirt4Free.com. Though he hails from a supportive family, one of the few porn actors I have met who does, Zakk takes advantage of limiting features of the cam site and blocks his state of origin as well as several other states where family friends live. He would rather Mom and Dad not take in a show.

Online webcam customers view a model doing everyday activities such as studying, sleeping, house cleaning and chatting. Or, even more intimate activities when the model is successful at getting his viewers to ante up the fees for a private show.

Website rules preclude nudity in public chats. A model must at minimum wear underwear. Only in private shows may a model show it all.

In public view everyone sees the same video and chat though a customer can speak to them privately by “whispering” to the model for free. The model can then respond privately back. Generally a whisper is used to set up a private show.

A private show can be purchased by an individual customer or by a group of customers who get together to cover the cost. These rates are set by the model and a successful model rakes in tips in addition to the fee.

In a private show the model doesn’t see the customer and each one makes his requests for specific activity, special performance, or fetish behavior via text chat.

Customers can hear the model’s voice though they cannot speak to the model.

Public viewing, as the website name promises is free. Private shows and texting the model is charged by credits per minute and customers can send tips to see more. Credits are purchased from the website. Similar to any time based business the webcam model attempts to keep his customer interested as long as possible.

The longer the private session, the more credits transfer from the customer to the model. The trade off is that the customer may give up and leave while the model drags out his performance. Keeping the customer

interested while keeping tension to a happy ending is the objective.

The goal becomes keeping the customer engaged, energizing the performance by building anticipation and requesting tips for additional actions. Speaking the customers name, engaging them personally and knowing when their interest is waning are all tools models use to keep their best customers from leaving the show. In addition to the private show charges and tips a generous customer can visit the model’s wish list; the website hosts the store, makes the sale and delivers the item to the model.

Each customer has his own expectations of what he would like to see. Zakk has been asked to play with his feet for a foot play fetish customer, pretend to bottom using positions and toys, cut his head hair (which thankfully he didn’t, its beautiful hair), shower, masturbate, and oddly enough often to simply smile and be there.

Creating a working profile is important work, and should a profile fail to deliver customers, or slow or stop doing so, a creative escort updates and changes until he again finds a workable model that draws in prospective customers.

Regardless, there is a broad cross section of escorts for customers to choose from, and a broad cross section of customers for escorts to draw from. Multiple sites are difficult to manage and because of subscription costs most escorts opt for just one online presence.

Escorting doesn’t come with a performance manual leaving the entire effort open for learning and interpretation. Starting out, new escorts have to learn on their backs, so to speak. Each will likely get to a job, do the job and find out there is no pay. They learn to see the cash, even get half before beginning. Customers often give a wrong address, or simply don’t show up at the time and place.

Successful escorts learn to have the entire deal defined up front before meeting the customer in person. Since customers pay expenses those costs are paid at the time of service such as restaurants, shows, clubs or cabs. Fees, or larger costs such as airfare, are often split over the course of the visit. A multi day customer pays daily.

Arriving to meet a customer in most cases begins with the payment of cash. Escorts usually hold cash until the service is complete, though often a friend or fellow escort will drop by to whisk away the cash to a safe place; particularly when a large sum is involved. Safety is a big concern and fellow escorts watch their friends’ location via an iPhone app and keep in touch periodically.

Gifts can make up a large part of an escort’s pay and pushing a customer for cash versus gifts is a consistent interplay. Average income is typically a few hundred dollars per week plus gifts. Most want stability of at least

one thousand dollars per week from one client. Ultimately an escort wants one or two long term customers though the norm is many small jobs.

This business is more about luck than skills, at least in the beginning. Luck brings the one or two generous customers rather than having to exist on short-term sex work.

Bringing a customer home is out of the question and a successful escort may spend two or three nights per week with a customer at their own place or in a hotel.

The gold standard is a boyfriend experience that includes moving into the customer’s home and acting as a boyfriend performing such duties as a paid escort would.

These relationships can work and do so most successfully when the escort has his own room, defined responsibilities and payment schedule.

Escorting can be challenging work often mixed with a tinge of regret at doing it.

Most would give it all up for love.

All said they would move from a professional to personal relationship in the event of finding the right guy. But that’s not likely while still being in the escort business.

Of all the experiences, the oddest event was a customer who paid $400 to drive around for twenty minutes simply to get acquainted. He was never heard from again.

QUITTING THE BUSINESS

ex work can be a nasty trap. The glow of its possibilities, the promise of a new life in a new place and the reality of that one generous escort customer can blind newcomers to the reality of a difficult life in a tough business.

In the end guys get out because they never should have begun in the first place, they can’t make a go of it financially, or they do make a go of it financially and become able to move on to other things.

Everything comes to an end and always for different reasons for different people. Sometimes you just have to quit, and quit Brian did.

Brian is a lively fair-haired young man in his early twenties, originally from central Iowa. Like others before him he met Tom online and messaged back and forth for over a year before making his decision to leave all he knew for the allure of Tom’s promises.

Brian quickly found he could not fit into the model house environment. Working with Tom for a few months made it readily apparent that he was going nowhere fast. In those few months he had earned about six hundred dollars shooting gay porn.

Tom set schedules that slid around by hours and even days. There was no real way to plan escorting time within Tom’s time demands, and those demands often returned no income. There was no longer a need to do it.

Brian reached a point where gay porn acting and escorting simply became no longer appealing. He found himself bored while filming, frustrated with the wasted time, having to reshoot because of other porn actors who could not get into the scene.

After several months of escorting he found mostly short-term customers who wanted to pay little for usually seedy activity that took more from Brian than he received in pay. Webcam modeling was too tedious, bringing real world scheduling and working hours at a time when he didn’t want either.

Not deterred by where he found himself in his new life Brian was determined to make a go of it. Luck held and he met the one very generous customer. Though Tom portrays escorting as going to be a big disappointment, escorting gave Brian the resources to move on. The real money is in escorting, if one happens upon the right customer. His generous customer pays him well, allowing him to make the next step on his list of goals.

Coming to a life change with goals in mind certainly helps in achieving them. Even when things don’t work out as originally planned Brian found it easier to adjust his goals than if he had not had them at all.

Regret at his choices in life and occupation carry some weight for Brian; one being that he has become numb to sex as a result of forcing attraction with customers.

The act has become purely mechanical. Without a current boyfriend or significant other Brian doesn’t know if, though he fears, he may find difficulty in getting close to someone as a result of his escorting.

His next partner will be more difficult than his previous because of his new numb emotionless response to another’s interest. Clearly it has created a distance between him and other people, a reserve in him that is quickly communicated. On meeting someone new a wall goes up to keep a focus on his goals at the expense of doing the work to create a new and growing relationship.

With a slow look away, Brian admitted that if that new person chased him he would look back, slow down and allow him to catch up. He wants to learn to loosen up and allow himself to be enjoyable while at the same time being productive.

Losing the ability to love is a heavy price to pay for earning a living.
