Putin's Party Debuts 'Hetero Pride' Flag
(EDGE) Russia's got a new flag just for straights. In response to U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage, which sparked the White House to lite up in rainbow colors, Russian President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party has unveiled their very own "heterosexual pride" flag. Russia's new straight pride flag shows a man and a woman holding hands with three

children. Under the image is the hashtag "#RealFamily" in Russian. The flag looks unsurprisingly familiar to the flag for La Manif Pour Tous -- France's anti-gay political party. A Russian parody news agency noted this and jokingly accused the Russian party of stealing it. They also mocked that one of the changes United Russia made to the image was to make the mother's waist larger than her French equivalent.

The Swinging Richards Nightclub in Pompano Beach has closed down. Previously, the nightclub catered to gay clientele and women were allowed to enter with a male escort. The dancers inside the club perform nude. While a rainbow flag still flies from atop the building at 1350 SW 2nd Street in Pompano Beach, a sign states the business is going
through remodeling with a phone number (754-207-5324) posted for inquires. SFGN called the number and left a message but as of press time has yet to receive a return call. MEMBER After days of speculation, a notice was posted on Facebook announcing the club would turn into a straight club.

Health Conference Reaches Out to MSM
John McDonald
The South Florida Men's Health and Wellness Conference 2015 comes to Fort Lauderdale this weekend with an emphasis on reaching out to those who are MSM (men who have sex with men). This group of men are classified by the Centers for Disease Control as MSM because of their reluctance to self-identify as gay or bisexual, say social workers. "We do not judge," said Fernando De Hoyos, a linkage and navigation specialist for the community based organization Latinos Salud. De Hoyos said men classified as MSM ran the gamut between those who only occasionally have sex with men, while preferring to present a heterosexual existence to those who engage in prostitution and "survival sex" and the often forgotten prison population. Including MSM in the conference was a goal of several participating groups in an effort to reach individuals who may not frequent public
spaces where health officials operate. "We want to reach the entire male community," said Christopher Bates, an HIV prevention specialist for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. At the conference, attendees will receive information and linkage to resources ranging from mental health, physical health, sexual health and gateway to health. Several physicians, doctors, activists and PhDs are scheduled to speak.
The conference is Saturday and Sunday (July 18-19) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel Fort Lauderdale, 1825 GrifďŹ n Road, Dania, Florida 33004. It is being sponsored by the Florida Department of Health in Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, DeSoto and Monroe Counties. To register online, visit www.All-Men.Healthcare.

Ted Cruz Hopes SCOTUS Marriage Ruling Will Start a 'Raging Inferno' (EDGE) To celebrate Independence Day last week, 2016 presidential GOP hopeful Ted Cruz (R-TX) went on an anti-gay rant at the Rock Springs Church in Milner, Ga., where he condemned the Supreme Court's landmark ruling last month, legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states. According to Right Wing Watch, Cruz said he hopes the high court's decision will spark a backlash and that it starts a "raging inferno." "It is my hope that that marriage decision

Judge Takes Over Weddings Ohio After Gay Couple Turned Away
After a municipal court judge in Toledo refused to perform a same-sex wedding this week, the presiding judge says she will now perform all marriages in her courtroom. Toledo Municipal Judge Michelle Wagner says she doesn't want to see a same-sex couple go before a judge who is not interested in conducting the ceremony. She said it is her privilege to perform those weddings. Her decision came after her colleague, Municipal Judge C. Allen McConnell, said he didn't marry a same-sex couple earlier this week because of his religious beliefs. Another judge was brought in to perform the wedding the same day. The court typically uses a weekly rotation of judges to perform marriages and handle other unscheduled matters. McConnell was on duty Monday when he refused to perform the wedding.

serves as a spark to start a fire that becomes a raging inferno and an awakening that sweeps this country as the body of Christ rise up to defend the values that have built America into this great nation that we are," he said, according to the conservative website Red Kudzu. Cruz also said a number of Republican politicians responded to the gay marriage ruling by "publicly issuing critical statements and privately going in the backroom popping champagne and celebrating."
"Community-based organizations have been vital to our nation's HIV prevention efforts since the earliest days of the epidemic," said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention. "The organizations we're funding have a strong foothold in the hardest-hit communities. They have the credibility and experience needed to deliver the most effective HIV prevention strategies to those who need them most." CBOs will use the new funding to deliver high-impact HIV prevention strategies, including: • Providing HIV testing to those at high risk to increase the proportion of people who are aware of their HIV status • Engaging HIV-positive people in ongoing care and treatment, helping them adhere to antiretroviral therapy, and ensuring they receive prevention and support services • Ensuring high-risk, HIV-negative individuals have access to prevention and support services such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), highimpact behavioral interventions, and screening for sexually transmitted infections • Distributing condoms to HIV-positive and high-risk, HIV-negative individuals.

(AP) At least two Missouri judges are opting to not marry any couples following the historic U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing marriage between same-sex couples. Associate circuit judges Larry Winfrey and Steve Jackson of the southern Missouri county of Laclede (luh-KLEED') say they won't be marrying anyone. Codes guiding judicial conduct in the state prohibit judges from discriminating in whom they marry. That means if judges don't want to marry same-sex couples, they can't marry opposite-sex couples, either. Winfrey and Jackson say they don't want to be caught up in the "dissention" the Supreme Court decision created.

iden Celebrates Same-Sex Marriage, Says More to be Done
Joe Biden.
(AP) As he praised a recent Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage, Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday said more still needs to be done to protect LGBT Americans. Biden spoke at an event in Manhattan hosted by Freedom to Marry, a New Yorkbased organization. He praised the Supreme Court's recent ruling that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the U.S., and said federal officials will continue to fight for the rights of the LGBT community. "I really do think it is an incredible job you all have done," Biden told the crowd. "This has been a heroic battle." He said members of the LGBT community had their "love constrained by social stigma and discriminatory laws." "In my view, the court's decision was
A
inevitable," he said. "So many remained silent for fear of being ostracized. You set them free." He told several hundred other elected officials, community leaders, advocates and celebrities that more needs to be done to inform Americans that LGBT people can be fired from their jobs in 32 states because of their sexual orientation. "There are still 32 states where marriage is recognized in the morning and you can be fired in the afternoon," he said. "I don't believe people in those states know you can be fired for being gay." He said he believes people in those states would protest if they realized that is the law. "We have to raise the issue up," he said. "Once people realize, this will end as well."
IDS Policy Experts Pleased By House and Senate Funding Bills

(AIDS INSTITUTE) Last week, House and Senate Appropriation Committees passed FY16 funding bills that maintain, for the most part, funding for specific domestic HIV and hepatitis programs while they drastically cut many other programs that are critical to preventing and treating HIV and hepatitis. Policy experts were pleased with the funding. "The AIDS Institute thanks the leadership of the Appropriation Committees for maintaining their support of HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment, research and housing programs," commented Carl Schmid, Deputy Executive Director of The AIDS Institute. "This is particularly noteworthy given that the overall spending caps are billions of dollars below current spending levels and some programs have been dramatically cut or zeroed out. While we are pleased with Congress' ongoing bipartisan commitment to people with HIV/AIDS, we are deeply disappointed with the Senate's cut of $61 million to the
Minority AIDS Initiative in the Secretary's Office and at SAMHSA, together with a $25 million cut to the Ryan White HIV/ AIDS Program. Additionally, both bills cut funding to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and several other programs that prevent HIV, particularly among women." Under the Labor, HHS, Education and Related Agencies Appropriation bills, the House maintains $2.3 billion in funding for the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, including $900 million for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). The Senate reduces Ryan White Program funding by $25 million by zeroing out the Special Projects of National Significance, which have been critical in developing innovative systems to improve care and treatment. The Ryan White Program provides health care, medications, and coverage completion services to approximately 536,000 low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals living with HIV. soflagaynews //

Same-Sex Marriage Back In Court In Kentucky (AP) A federal judge is scheduled to hear arguments about a county clerk who is refusing to issue marriage licenses after the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling legalizing samesex marriage. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis is one of a handful of local officials across the country who have refused to comply with the court's order. Davis and others say it violates their religious beliefs. The stance has prompted
a debate about whether religious liberty extends to those officials, who are charged with carrying out state government functions. The American Civil Liberties Union sued Davis on behalf of two gay couples and two straight couples who were denied licenses. U.S. District Judge David L. Bunning, son of former Republican U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning, is scheduled to hear arguments at noon Monday.
County commissioners are scheduled to vote on her resignation Monday. Hale said he expected it would be accepted. District Attorney Michael Jimerson said Lewis-Kugle asked about her options and he told her "the Supreme Court is the law of the land." He said she had a choice of issuing the license or resigning in protest. Lewis-Kugle has no published telephone number and couldn't be reached to comment on her resignation.

ame-Sex Marriage Ruling Raises Issues for Kansas, Missouri
(AP) Kansas and Missouri legislators face debates next year over religious objections proposals and expanding their state's anti-discrimination laws to protect gays and lesbians. The U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriage across the nation raised both issues in both states. The high court ruling immediately led social conservatives to warn that the religious liberties of gay marriage opponents at risk. Among those expressing concern was Republican Gov. Sam Brownback of Kansas. Supporters of the ruling suggested just as quickly while gays and lesbians can marry, they aren't protected by law from losing their jobs or housing over their sexual orientation. They included Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon of Missouri. Both states had banned gay marriage. Neither's antidiscrimination laws cover bias based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
((Human Rights Campaign) The Oregon legislature created the position of LGBT Veterans Coordinator within the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs. The new position will assist LGBTQ veterans and with applications for status of discharge upgrades that happened under 'Don't Ask Don't Tell'. Senator Sara Gelser, who sponsored SB 946, celebrated its passage. “When our friends and neighbors step up to serve in the military, they give their all for our nation,” said Gelser. “In return, we must be sure to meet the needs of each of our veterans. Unfortunately, decades upon decades of misinformed policies deprived gay, lesbian and bisexual veterans of their dignity and the services and benefits they earned in service to our nation, including in combat.” There are an estimated 15,000 LGBT veterans in Oregon. The coordinator will be available to serve each of them, regardless of their discharge status. The bill passed the Senate on a 25-4 vote, and the House on a 38-21 vote. The bill now heads to Governor Kate Brown and becomes effective on the date of her signature.
Clerk in East Texas Resigns School Board Defends County Over Gay Marriage Ruling Virginia Anti-Trans Bathroom Policy (AP) An East Texas county clerk has resigned rather than comply with the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld the right of same-sex couples to marry. County Judge Joel Hale, Rusk County's top administrator, said Lewis-Kugle wrote that she could not in good conscience issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

is set for July 20 in U.S. District Court in Newport News on Grimm's motion for a preliminary injunction barring enforcement of the policy. In the lawsuit, he claims he used the boys' restrooms at Gloucester High School without incident until the board, responding to complaints from parents, adopted a policy in December stating that "students with gender identity issues" will be provided an alternate, private facility. But the school board argued in Tuesday's brief that the only federal case similar to Grimm's supports the board's position. In that case, a judge ruled that the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown did not discriminate against a transgender student who was barred from men's facilities. "The School Board has a responsibility to its students to ensure their privacy while engaging in personal bathroom functions," the board's attorney wrote. "This is particularly true in an environment where children are still developing, both emotionally and physically." The board says it has established three single-stall, unisex restrooms that any student can use. "Under this policy, Plaintiff is treated the same as his fellow students," the brief says. The U.S. Justice Department has taken Grimm's side in the dispute. The department filed a statement of interest last week stating that transgender students must be allowed to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity.

merican Samoa Questions Gay Marriage Validity in Territory
Photo: Facebook.
(AP) Same-sex married couples can start applying for Social Security and veterans benefits for spouses in all 50 states, but there are still issues to resolve as the federal government works to implement the Supreme Court ruling allowing gay couples to marry nationwide. Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced Thursday the federal government is making marriage benefits available to same-sex couples in every state. The vast majority of federal marriage benefits were already available to same-sex couples, following a 2013 Supreme Court ruling that struck down the federal ban on gay marriage. However, some Social Security and veterans benefits for spouses were still denied to these couples if they lived in states that did not recognize their marriages. "I am proud to announce that the critical programs for veterans and elderly and disabled Americans, which previously could

not give effect to the marriages of couples living in states that did not recognize those marriages, will now provide federal recognition for all marriages nationwide," Lynch said in a statement. "The agencies are currently working towards providing guidance to implement this change in law." But there are still unresolved questions about how the federal government will implement the ruling, said Vickie Henry, a senior staff attorney for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, a legal advocacy group. For example, Social Security had been denying spousal benefits to same-sex married couples if - at the time they applied for benefits - they were living in a state that did not recognize their marriage. Also, they were denied survivor's benefits if their samesex spouse died while living in a state that did not recognize their marriage.
(AP) American Samoa stands as the only U.S. territory to hold out against the recent Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage. But as the Pacific island's attorney general reviews the decision, legal observers and gay rights advocates are saying it should go into effect immediately. "It should be unquestioned," said Rose Cuison Villazor, a professor at University of California, Davis' law school and an expert on territorial law. "The Supreme Court's decision was pretty strong." American Samoa Attorney General Talauega Eleasalo Ale, however, hasn't been ready to take that step. "We're still reviewing the decision to determine its applicability to American Samoa, and I have no specific comments at this time," he said. Asked if same sex marriage is legal in the territory, Ale said, "I don't know. We're

reviewing the law." U.S. territories have some self-governance rights. The right to marry, however, isn't a question of self-governance, said Omar Gonzalez-Pagan, staff attorney for national gay rights group Lambda Legal. "This is a question of individual right, individual liberty." Other U.S. territories have voluntarily complied with the Supreme Court decision. In Puerto Rico, Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla signed an executive order soon after the ruling. U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp has said he would issue a similar executive order. In Guam, there is no effort to ignore or challenge the ruling, said territorial legislative Vice Speaker Benjamin F. Cruz, who is gay. The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is also supporting the decision. As of Thursday, no one has applied for a same sex marriage license in American Samoa, according to the island's Office of Vital Statistics.

'Lesbian' is Pornhub's Biggest Search
(SFGN) Adult entertainment website PornHub lists “lesbian” as its most popular search term, with “teen” in second place and “step mom” in third according to stats posted by millennial geared media site Mic. (http://bit. ly/1gxjBnG ) However of those polled only 21-24 percent were female. By comparison a lesbian sex survey of more than 8,000 women conducted by LGBT and feminist focused Auto Straddle, (http://bit.ly/1RuooqK ) found that of 87 percent of women who watched porn, the majority fell into two categories, “the kind made by queer women for queer women (e.g., Crash Pad Series, Queer Porn TV, Juicy Pink Box) and the kind made by straight people for straight people (e.g., pretty much everything else). We found the former was far more popular than the latter — and, furthermore, many queer women prefer watching straight porn or gay male porn over lesbian porn made by/for straight people.”

No Trial Date for Gay-Bash Suspects
(PGN) Pre-trial negotiations continue for the trio accused of physically and verbally attacking a gay couple in Center City this past fall. Attorneys for Kathryn Knott, Kevin Harrigan and Philip Williams were in court Thursday for the scheduled pre-trial bring back, an opportunity for defense attorneys and prosecutors to review evidence before a trial date is set or a plea agreement is reached. Another pre-trial bring back was scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 13 in Room 905 of the Criminal Justice Center, 1301 Filbert St. The defendants were not in court Thursday. The three face aggravated assault, simple assault and conspiracy charges in connection with the Sept. 11 beating of Zachary Hess and Andrew Haught. The couple was walking near 16th and Chancellor when the three suspects allegedly taunted them about their sexual orientation and then physically assaulted them. Pennsylvania lacks an LGBT-inclusive hate-crimes law but the incident prompted Philadelphia City Council to enact such a measure. Knott, Harrigan and Williams couldn't be charged under the law because it was adopted after the incident took place.

Trans Women Who Inspired 'Tangerine'
(AP) Boasting two unknown, transgender leads and shot on an iPhone 5S, "Tangerine" became an unlikely breakout at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, sparking a modest bidding war between various distributors. Magnolia Pictures won out and the film hits theaters on Friday. It would have never happened had [director Sean] Baker not met trans women and aspiring performers Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez at the Los Angeles LGBT Center a few years prior. It was their lives and their deep knowledge of the neighborhood that inspired and informed the film. The plot, loosely, follows fresh-out-of-jail Sin-Dee (Rodriguez) on the hunt for her cheating boyfriend/pimp and his mistress, while best friend Alexandra (Taylor) works the street and readies for a performance that evening. "This is an extremely vulnerable group of people. They are the most marginalized. They are trans women of color who are also sex workers. You can't be more alienated and isolated by society than they are," said Baker.

(SFGN) A study performed by sociologists at Rice University surveyed more than 10,000 LGBT identified individuals and more than 405,000 heterosexuals and found that 19.5 percent of bisexual men and 18.5 percent of bi women rated their health as “poor or fair,” compared to gay men at 11.9 percent, lesbians at 10.6 percent, straight men and 14.5 percent, and straight women at 15.6 percent. Bisexual men and women were more likely to smoke (23.8 percent and 21.9 percent, respectively), compared with 14.9 percent of gay men, 16.6 percent of lesbian women, 11.1 percent of heterosexual men and 8.3 percent of heterosexual women. The study’s lead author Bridget Gorman said “Our study illustrates the importance of examining health status among specific sexual minority groups, and not among ‘sexual minorities’ in the aggregate, since the health profile of bisexual adults differs substantially from that of gay and lesbian adults,” according to a report from Rice’s public affairs office. Miami Beach Bruthaz is having their annual summer lifestyle event starting July 16. The event is held the third weekend in July every year on South Beach and creates opportunities for attendees to enjoy a VIPstyle weekend getaway on Miami Beach. This year, the event is held at the Congress South Beach Hotel and runs through July 20. Now in its ninth year, Miami Beach Bruthaz started in 2006 as a culturally diverse, annual event for gay men from across the country. The event is focused around a central theme: “Knowledge, Culture and Fashion.” The idea started when Author JL King invited Ian Smith to facilitate a group discussion about gay men being on the “down low.” That discussion prompted Smith to bring the topic to Florida through his freelance writing endeavors and discuss how it related to the HIV epidemic. From there, Smith wanted to create a space to have this open conversation about issues affecting the gay community on an ongoing basis. And so Miami Beach Bruthaz was born. Every year the event attracts between 300 to 500 people. The weekend consists of a variety of activities and events, including a “see and be seen” white masquerade party, a hip hop lover’s jam, an all-day rooftop pool party on Ocean Drive, a Brazilian party on South Beach, and a men’s swimwear and underwear fashion show featuring House of Mochachino and Andrew Christian. We get together and plan. We have a very diverse audience and I want people to know that this event is open to everyone,” Smith said. Friday and Saturday night are the big nights usually attracting a 35 and up crowd. One of the main attractions of the weekend is the signature Bruthaz SpeakUP event. “People are on a different journey and so much gets bottled up,” Smith said. “Speak Up provides a platform to get everything out. Every year is different and this year is an evening cocktail discussion with actor Darryl Stephens. The idea to provide a platform for the audience who shares a lot of the same issues and struggles. The Official Miami Beach Bruthaz Welcome Party kicks off Thursday July 16 at 10 p.m. at the Cabaret South Beach located at 233 12th Street, Miami Beach. “I think my goal is to have a place where gay and straight can come together and connect and build camaraderie that helps to make this sexual journey a lot easier and smoother,” Smith said. “Having something like [Miami Beach Bruthaz] pulls the community together and impacts lives.” Individual tickets and weekend packages are still available for all Miami Beach Bruthaz events.

Take Online Survey For SFGN
SFGN Staff
SFGN freelance writer, Sean McShee, is conducting an online survey to learn about beliefs about how often gay and bi HIV negative men should take the HIV test. The survey results will appear in SFGN by late September. At present, not much is known about our beliefs about the optimal frequency of testing for HIV infection. Your participation in this survey can help to start this conversation. This survey takes around ten minutes to complete. You can stop at any time and skip any question that you do not want to answer. The survey does not ask for details about behavior or anti-body status. It only asks about beliefs regarding HIV testing frequency and some demographic questions. The survey does not ask any identifying questions. Both English and Spanish versions (Thanks
to Latino Salud’s translations services) are available. To participate in this survey please visit the SFGN website and follow the prompts. It is be available online at sfgn.com/ HIVsurvey from July 8 to July 22.

Kate Hunt Has Baby
Jason Parsley
Kingston born at 7:21am 7 lbs 2 ounces 19.5 inches long.
The mother of Kaitlyn “Kate” Hunt, the former high school senior arrested for underage sex with her freshman classmate, announced on Facebook the birth of Hunt’s son Kingston, who was born on July 1. In November it was announced on Facebook that Hunt is now engaged to 27-year-old Latasha Thomas. In 2013, when Hunt was 18, her life was turned upside after being arrested for having a sexual relationship with her then 14-year-old girlfriend. Hunt met her former girlfriend during basketball tryouts at Sebastian River High School in Sebastian. When the younger girl’s parents found out about the relationship they alerted the police, who arrested Hunt and charged her with two counts of lewd and lascivious battery on a child. If she had been convicted she would have also been added to the state’s sex offender registry for life. After prosecutors refused to lessen the charges Hunt’s family took to social media to plead their case. The story went viral. A campaign called “Free Kate” was launched and a Change.org petition collected over 325,000 signatures.
Hunt’s family believed that the younger girl’s parents alerted the police because it was a lesbian relationship. The parents denied that charge. Hunt served a three-month sentence for charges that included battery, interference with child custody, and contributing to the dependency of a child.
Her story will be featured on the MTV series “One Bad Choice.” It’s reportedly set to air August 20.

Mature Gay Men
Celebrate in Orlando John McDonald

Mature gay men from all corners of the country and overseas are gathering this weekend in Orlando for the 14th annual A Celebration of Friends Weekend. Tom Pence, aka Tomcat, is the founder and president of A Celebration of Friends. The organization, Pence tells SFGN, is designed for “mature men and their admirers.” “So often in today’s gay world the focus seems to be on the young and beautiful,” Pence said. “This does not truly reflect our community as a whole.” A Celebration of Friends, Pence said is “dedicated to providing warm, safe, comfortable and engaging gatherings that strive to promote self-worth, dignity, kindness and friendships within the senior population.” Pence said he is expecting between 600 to 800 attendees for the five-day event (July 16-20). The Doubletree by Hilton Orlando at SeaWorld (10100 International Drive) returns as the ACOF Weekend host hotel. The hotel, Pence said, is glad to see his group return. “The Hilton family of hotels have always treated us with great respect,” said Pence, a former United States Marine, who launched the ACOF Weekend in 2002 in New Orleans. Headlining this year’s event is television legend Ed Asner. A former president of the Screen Actors Guild, Asner has won more Emmy Awards for performing than any other male actor. He won five for his work on the show, “Lou Grant.” “This is really, really huge for us,” Pence said. “We took a survey of our membership
and the results came back overwhelmingly in favor of Ed. I was shocked we got him. I thought he was untouchable.” Asner, 85, is scheduled to participate in a special question and answer segment Saturday evening. Pence said the star will discuss his career as an activist in several causes. In addition to Asner’s appearance, ACOF Weekend includes film screenings, dance contests, health care information sessions, church services and pool parties. Rapid HIV testing is also available throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile many Uber supporters, including riders and SFGN reached out to several gay drivers and riders to get drivers, cite these reasons for using Uber: safety, cleanliness, their opinions of the restrictions set forth by the commission convenient, and inexpensive. and Uber’s decision to pull out of the “Broward County officials implemented county. one of the most onerous regulatory “I am upset with Uber for caving in frameworks for ridesharing in the nation,” “I am upset with to Broward County. Even more enticing though is the price — usually an Uber ride is less expensive than a traditional cab. However, argues Lori Lyons, a member of the community, who is the marketing director for Yellow Cab, “This is not a gay and lesbian issue. It is a public safety issue. No one is trying to kick Uber out of Broward County. They were approved on April 28. If they leave, it’s on them. We are simply asking that they abide by the rules. We want an even playing field. People need to know that regulation is necessary and proper to protect the public.” Daniel Sohn, an openly gay candidate for Dania Beach mayor, also agrees with the commission’s decision to regulate Uber, and other TNCs. “As a candidate who believes in safety I side with the county commission on their decision,” he said. Ever since the county’s decision Sohn has been hearing from angry constituents upset with the county, but he’s urging them to instead express their frustration directly to Uber. “Uber is a billion dollar company, they just don’t want to accept the regulations,” he said. “If Uber hears from all of their users ‘you’re the reason why I can’t get to work,’ that might persuade them to make the right decision.” For Sohn the right decision would be for Uber to accept the county’s regulations in order to keep their drivers and customers safe. But even Sohn has changed his mind after learning more information. Initially he felt the level II background checks were appropriate. Now he says a level I background would be sufficient. Another openly gay politician, Scott Herman, however disagrees with the commission. “Broward County Commissioners should not be out to help create a monopoly with taxi services,” he said. “They should be pro jobs, pro community, pro less bureaucracy, pro less red tape and pro business. The Facts About Transportation Network Companies in Broward County's press release
On May 4, 2015, Broward County Commissioners approved a regulation that allows transportation network companies (TNCs), such as Uber and Lyft, to legally operate in Broward County. It consists of three basic rules: provide safe drivers, safe vehicles and the same insurance that state law already requires. The new regulation is less stringent than those Uber operates under now in New York City and Houston and it meets all TNC demands
for non-interference in fares and the number of vehicles allowed. The action followed months of research, discussion and debate, with public comment from TNC officials, their employees and representatives, and other drivers for hire. In conjunction with the regulation, as an added convenience, Broward County expedited the TNC/driver permitting process, providing for online regulation and printable temporary chauffeur licenses.
Here are the facts:
wrong. They failed the community with too much red tape.” While riders will certainly be inconvenienced, drivers will lose their livelihood. For Darrow and Fort Lauderdale resident Sean Samson, Uber is the perfect way to supplement their income. Samson is a full time preschool teacher during the school year and since summer started he’s been working full time for Uber. “I’m disappointed in our local government for not embracing innovation,” Samson said. “This is the perfect job for someone who wants a rewarding career that doesn’t pay very much. I can make $100 an hour during special events.” With the suspension looming Samson has no idea how he’ll extra money going forward. “I’m currently job searching,” he said. Darrow is a full time real estate agent. “It’s really an outstanding part time job. I have the ability to just turn on the app to work whenever it’s convenient,” he said. “I can work as much or as little as I want. I have the ultimate flexibility.” But if Uber accepts these new regulations this part time job will no longer be worth it. “Seventy percent of drivers are part time — working 10 to 30 hours a week,” Darrow said. “Requiring them to have commercial insurance, which can be $1,000 a month is crazy.” Another part timer Uber driver, K.C. Guy, has a slightly different view. “Sometimes private businesses can fulfill roles better than our government. Florida’s current weekly unemployment is $275,” he said. “Even out of season you can make double that as a full-time Uber driver. Between more gainful employments, Uber helped me to pay my bills on time. It’s unfortunate that the Broward County Commissioners are voting away what could be viewed as a social safety
net for the residents of Broward County.” Even though County Commissioners are claiming safety concerns are the primary reasons for their strict regulations, Uber supporters are flipping the script on them, by claiming safety as a reason to support the ridesharing industry. As a driver Guy loves picking up drivers who were too drunk to drive on their own. It gave him a sense of pride. “As an Uber driver, I loved hearing, ‘I am too drunk to drive so I called Uber.’ Hearing that made me feel proud of the work I was doing,” Guy said. “If Uber is pushed out of Broward County, could one in ten future drunk driving fatalities in Broward County be attributed to the vote of the Broward County Commissioners?” According to Uber the company has seen a reduction in DUI arrests in the cities where they operate. Some news organizations have also noted this. However the Washington Post points out: “Any number of other things may have changed in the city over the last few years affecting DUI arrests. It's possible police have changed how they conduct DUI stops and arrests, or that public pressure on them to crack down on DUIs has ebbed with time. Other changes in public transit service may have impacted alternative routes that barhoppers take home.” Samson also shares Guy’s concerns. “I fear DUIs will go back up,” he said. There are many riders who would never use a traditional taxi service and Darrow believes ridesharing companies are bringing new customers to the marketplace. Many of those folks, he said, aren’t going to automatically switch to taxis if Uber is not available. “They would ordinarily drive,” he said. “Uber has pulled people into the marketplace.” Drew Zyla, a Palm Beach County driver, said the Broward suspension wouldn’t affect his
• Broward County welcomes TNCs to our community. The County Commission's proactive adoption of TNC regulations has created an environment in which TNCs can operate legally and safely. • The County Commission's primary concern is with public safety.
The TNC requirements rely on independent regulation, instead of self-regulation. The County's TNC regulation complies with Federal Trade Commission guidance. It contains fair and reasonable requirements focused on passenger and driver safety and security.
• Requirements of the ordinance do not force TNCs to either provide
substandard service or leave the market, just as more stringent regulations required by other jurisdictions have not forced Uber to abandon popular markets such as New York City or Houston.
• Broward County remains open to continued conversations about appropriate regulations that help TNCs flourish, but also protect public safety.
job since he’ll still be able to drive through the county and/or drop off riders within Broward. But that could change soon as well. In March of this year the Palm Beach County Commission narrowly passed, with a 4-3 vote, to an agreement that allows Uber to continue operating through September 31 while staff works out how to best regulate the ridesharing service. Zyla hopes the backlash against the Broward commission will serve as a warning to Palm Beach County to think twice before attempting to overregulate the service. “It’s such a great service for people. I don’t understand why anyone is against it,” he said. The Broward County Commission is out of session right now so a possible reconsideration of the new laws won’t take place until at least September. But for now the commissions seem confident in their decision. Since the controversy erupted they have mostly expressed shock at the backlash and have

defended their positions. In fact, Leonard Valpondo of the Environmental Licensing Division of Broward County has posted an online You Tube video, intended to prevent the misrepresentation of facts related to this discussion. He stated: “Broward County has not banned Uber. We are one of the few counties which has instituted regulations to insure transportation network companies can flourish in our county. We passed ordinances to meet their demands and accommodate their needs, even more generous than other locations. We even allowed Uber drivers to use cutting edge technologies to download chauffeur’s registrations from their home." The county also sent out a press release “The Facts About Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) in Broward” clarifying the new regulations and emphasizing the county’s commitment to public safety (see sidebar).

Rachel Does Not Equal Caitlyn The comparison hurts the trans movement
Christiana Lilly Every week there seems to be a social media battle, and a recent one brought up two of the hottest topics we’ve got going at the moment: gender and race. Bruce Jenner came out as a woman in an interview with Diane Sawyer, then introduced herself as Caitlyn on the cover of Vanity Fair. Shortly after, Rachel Dolezal “came out” as a white woman — or should we say — was outed. Dolezal was the NAACP chapter president in Spokane, Wash. and a faculty member at Eastern Washington University teaching Africana Studies, claiming to be at least partially black for almost a decade and doing speaking engagements on the experience of the black woman in America. On Facebook and Twitter, people compared Dolezal’s “coming out” to that of Jenner’s just weeks before saying if someone can “choose” to be a woman, why can’t they “choose” to be black?
For LGBT activists, the very idea that the two are the same is shut down starting with the word “choose” — transgender people don’t wake up one day and decide to be another gender. In fact, the National Center for Transgender Equality didn’t even accept an interview request with SFGN, saying they’ve said their piece on the comparison. “Simply put: there isn't one,” they wrote in an email. Osamudia James, professor of law at the University of Miami, studies racial identity and equal protection together with her studies in law. She also came to the same conclusion. “I don’t think they’re the same,” the professor said of race and gender. “They’re both social constructs, but as someone on Twitter said, they’re constructed of different things.” James explains that both race and gender are social constructs — or dictated by society. While some people believe that race is a biological factor, it’s not – there is no black gene, no Asian gene.
Furthermore, with the “one-drop rule,” one is labeled a minority even if they are part white, as if their white blood has been “tainted,” — something society decided. For example, President Barack Obama is just as black as he is white, but he is considered to be a black man. Then there are also social ideas of “talking black” and “acting white.” Gender gets even more complicated, because it is a social construct with a mix of biological factors. Even though the genitalia between a baby’s legs tells us a newborn is male or female, that baby’s brain could have an entirely different feeling. That’s where things set race and gender apart, James said, that one can “feel” male or female. “Your brain wiring tells you that you’re female. That may or may not match with how your chromosomes express themselves through genitalia,” she said. “We do know that very young children understand themselves to be one gender or the other.” Gender and sex gets even more complicated with the wide array on the gender spectrum, with cis-gender (non-transgender) men and women, transgender people, and gender fluid individuals, or those who do not identify with being either female or male (and this is breaking it down very broadly). Kat Blaque, a black transgender woman, made a video breaking down the difference between Dolezal and Jenner’s experiences. “Rachel’s story and Caitlyn’s story are not at all the same,” she explained. “Race and gender are absolutely social constructs, the difference is gender is not a biological trait passed from parent to child whereas race is. Evolution was regional and there’s a reason why my skin is dark…. gender is not passed from parent to child.” Blaque added a note in her video that it’s not so much race that is the biological trait, but

one’s skin color, which is based on melanin levels carried down from one’s ancestors. With Dolezal’s story, the hashtag #TransracialLivesMatter started trending, playing off of the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag following multiple cases of black men being killed by white police officers during arrest. The word is being used incorrectly — many media outlets have also wrongly described Dolezal as being transracial. Actually, the word refers to those who are adopted into a family that is not the same race as them, for example, an Asian child adopted into a white family would be considered a transracial person. “I cannot manipulate what race is for my own pleasure,” wrote Lisa Marie Rollins, a transracial adoptee, for “Lost Daughters” blog. “The crucial difference here is that I had and continue [to] have no choice in my blackness.” In light of Dolezal being outed as a white woman she resigned from the NAACP and is no longer listed as a faculty member at Eastern Washington University. Oddly enough, comedian Dave Chappelle may have said it best, “There is not one thing that woman accomplished that she couldn’t have done as a white woman.” James noted that while her life as a professor and black activist may have been different, being a white women, “it would have been more honest work and it would have been work that’s needed.” Much like the importance of straight allies in the fight for LGBT rights. “People draw these comparisons between Rachel and Caitlyn because they believe that trans people, at the end of the day, are deceptive,” Blaque said. “Who I am at the end of the day is the most truthful incarnation of myself. Transitioning took honesty.”

With A Little Help From Our Friends Pier Angelo
It has been a long and winding road to June 26, 2015. From the Stonewall Drag Queens who fought the police in June 1969 to Harvey Milk, Margareth Cammermeyer, Cleve Jones, Evan Wolfson, Troy Perry, Larry Kramer, Norm Kent, Frank Kameny, Dan Choi, a lot of people, a lot of activists, a lot of unsung heroes fought for years to get us to this point. They risked their comfort and security to press for equal rights for all people. To make us fully vested participants in the American dream. It has been a steady struggle. For decades, anti-gay organizations and their supporters have portrayed the LGBT community as child molesters, diseased, sexually aggressive miscreants whose aim is to bring about the end of democracy or civilization before being sent to the lower rings of Dante's Inferno for our supposed sins. Through preposterous lies, distortions and overstatements, anti-gay pastors, right wing politicians and pseudo celebrities made it difficult for laws to be passed to protect our interests, health and families.
They created, and repeated ad nauseam, the false mantra that we are a dangerous public health hazard, that our lives are filled with pain, misery, sadness, loneliness and early death. And they did this “in God’s name.” They are without defense. Luckily their efforts backfired. In the long run they made people stop and think about what they were saying and in particular how these selfproclaimed moral people could mix God and Hate in the same sentences with such ease. They were exposed for what they really are: mean and divisive fascist demagogues. For years we stood against their hate, condemnation, virulence, judgment, and abuse – most of it coming from the nonaffirming, behavior-focused Christian churches, but finally, we are almost...here. At this historical junction I want to personally thank some of our "frenemies" who helped us out with their bombastic words and bigotry; they turned out to be our best allies, albeit unintentionally. To them goes my undying gratitude.
First and foremost, Anita Bryant, the Queen of Mean. In June 1977 Bryant, a former Miss Oklahoma and publicist for the Florida Citrus Association, led a battle in Dade County against an anti-discrimination ordinance including sexual orientation. Her "Save Our Children" campaign earned a lot of attention with such rhetoric as "God puts homosexuals in the same category as murderers" and "The will of the American people is to return this country to pro-family, Bible morality." But her vitriol galvanized the gay community nationwide to move out of the bars and bathhouses and into the streets. It was a turning point for gay men and lesbians who years later would trace their own coming out or activism to the Anita Bryant victory. She did do damage, prompting the repeal of antidiscrimination ordinances in Miami and elsewhere. But her movement was remarkably short-lived. "Anita Bryant is the best thing ever to happen to American homosexuals," wrote The Nation at the time. Thanks Anita, you are the reason I became an activist. The Rev. Fred Phelps Sr., the fiery founder of the small Westboro Baptist Church drew international condemnation for outrageous and hate-filled protests that blamed almost everything, including the deaths of AIDS victims and U.S. soldiers, on America's tolerance for gay people. Throughout his life, Phelps tested the boundaries of free speech, violating accepted societal standards for decency in his unapologetic assault on gays and lesbians. In the process, he helped the cause of gay rights by serving as a provocative symbol of intolerance forcing people to confront their own views and rousing a protective instinct in parents and friends of gays and lesbians. Thank you Sir, God Bless YOU! After the attacks of 9/11 Jerry Falwell, appearing as a guest on Pat Robertson's

daily 700 Club program, expressed his sorrow and outrage over the attacks but he then elaborated on who, in addition to the terrorists, was responsible for them. "The pagans, the abortionists, the feminists, the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'" He had already descended into the absurd on February 1999, when he stated that the purple Teletubby named Tinky Winky was intended as a gay role model. "He is purple – the gay pride color; and his antenna is shaped like a triangle – the gay-pride symbol." Jerry, I wish you were still here today to see 21st-century America: multiracial, multi-ethnic, global in outlook and moving beyond centuries of racial, sexual, marital and religious tradition. Pat Robertson on June 10, 1998, said that Orlando should beware of hurricanes, since it, and Disney World, allow Gay Days to be held there "I would warn Orlando that you're right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you,'' Robertson said on his TV show, The 700 Club. In the months following the statement, Orlando was spared, but hurricanes Charley and Frances made landfall in Texas, dumping heavy rains, killing more than 14 people, and both hitting the town of Corpus Christi. So much for the "God Hates Fags" theory. Apparently even the Almighty has a sense of humor.
Memo to all of them: If you want to tout your own morality, you better come up with something more substantive than your misguided beliefs. Don't use religion to abdicate your responsibility to be thinking and caring human beings. And face it: a vast number of religious people find your self-righteous sanctimonious claptrap repugnant. God is not for the privileged majority, and God knows we have committed no sin.

violence in the trans community.” Jay Brown, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s director of research and public education, said social media is a helpful tool in increasing coverage, but the root of the problem can only be solved with the help of public and private agencies. “Social media coverage of these deaths helps boost visibility of the problem as many times these crimes go un- or underreported,” he said. The HRC, in partnership with the Trans People of Color Collective, released an issue brief earlier this year, A National Crisis: Anti-Transgender Violence to highlight the critical issues facing the transgender community currently, which include poverty, unemployment, housing discrimination and barriers to healthcare. “The report also issued several calls-to-action directed at both public and private agencies,” Brown said. Ahmed agreed, stating that visibility only goes so far. “The real issues like low income … won’t go away by increasing visibility,” he said. “Real change will come from policies that will speak to the issues that are affecting trans communities such as lack of access to appropriate health care, housing and shelter.” Ahmed and Broadus also suggest that one of the best ways to help the trans community is to speak up and get help for transgender people who might be in a harmful situation. “We need to be very aware of [the less harmful aggressions] because they build up and can eventually lead to murder,” Broadus said. “[Being transgender] impacts lives in so many ways from extreme poverty to suicide to health risks. If we impact transgender lives everybody’s quality of life is improved."

Following his stint in the White House and his graduation from Georgetown University, he led a number of political campaigns advocating for or against various California ballot initiatives, as well as a number of fundraising efforts for political candidates, such as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Following the 2008 passage of California's highly publicized Proposition 8, which barred the recognition of same-sex marriage, Griffin founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) to overturn the law. AFER's challenge, Perry v. Brown was ultimately successful following a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2013. An Open Door Closes
A trans perspective on the end of The Bilerico Project Rebecca Juro
rjuroshow@gmail.com
“You need to check it out, Becky,” Marti Abernathey told me, “You’d be perfect for it.” “Yeah ok, I’ll take a look.” I responded, utterly non-committal. I had good reason to not take Marti’s offer seriously. It was 2007 and I possessed a thoroughly jaded perspective on any media labelled “LGBT.” It was the era of thenWashington Blade Editor-In-Chief Chris Crain’s “Trans-Jack” ENDA editorials, a time when most of the media which labelled itself Queer or LGBT was in reality almost entirely focused on topics and issues of interest to gays and lesbians. With just a few notable exceptions, columnists such as Gwen Smith writing for the Bay Area Reporter and my own column in the Rehoboth Beach Gayzette, trans people and issues usually only rarely appeared in LGBT media, usually as human interest features or as objects of mockery and derision. With the exception of that which we created for our own community, trans-relevant journalism and journalists didn’t really exist yet. As an Internet radio talk show host and blogger, I was one of a very small group of well-known and regularly published trans mediamakers, which included not only Marti and myself, but also Gwen Smith, Nancy Nangeroni, Ethan St Pierre, Autumn Sandeen, and a handful of others. Out of all of us, only Gwen and I had scored paying gigs as columnists. The rest of us put their stuff out there as they could, where they could. After a few weeks of Marti’s badgering, I finally took a look at this Indiana-based blog I’d never heard of before — The Bilerico Project. Owned by Bil Browning, the site’s publisher and his partner (now husband) Jerame Davis, the site’s tech guru, I had wellfounded preconceived notions about what any LGBT blog site run by two gay men was likely to be like. There wasn’t much transrelevant content there then, but what was there was quite good. I was impressed, and I decided I wanted to be part of it. I got in touch with Bil and made my interest known, providing a long list of my previous writing. By the end of the week, I was on the Bilerico Project contributor roster, only the third-ever trans writer, behind Gwen and
Marti, to get a such a slot in LGBT media. A year later, Marti and I were the first trans Contributing Editors for The Bilerico Project and tasked with a special assignment from Bil and Jerame, to find and nominate quality trans bloggers for slots as contributors. We hadn’t gone to them and demanded more trans writers for the site, they’d come to us and asked us to help them find some. One of our first successful nominations was also the one I’m personally most proud of, Monica Roberts. It was a major coup for us to be able to bring Monica aboard, not only because she’s a great writer but also because she also represented a segment of the trans community, which had been generally overlooked and ignored at the time, people of color. Over time Bilerico’s roster of trans voices grew as we added names like Mercedes Allen, Tobi Hill-Meyer, Jillian Weiss, Donna Rose, and Toni D’Orsay. Our trans readership grew as well and became some of the most vocal and active commenters at the site. And there were the debates, the interviews, the social interaction between the contributors and staff of The Bilerico Project and our readers. They were loud, uncensored, passionate, critical, well-informed, and most of all, good Queer fun. The Bilerico Project opened its doors to a wide variety of LGBT voices during its run, but perhaps its greatest impact was in the opportunity for community exposure it offered to emerging trans writers who were not being offered the kind of opportunities in LGBT community media we are today. It’s arguable that every trans blogger and journalist publishing at a major site in the U.S. today owes Bil and Jerame a debt. After 11 years, The Bilerico Project has ended, and an LGBT media outlet, which has played a key role in the advent of transrelevant media is no more. For many trans writers like myself, The Bilerico Project lifted us out of relative obscurity and recast us as important and valued community voices. It literally changed our lives and the lives of those who honored us with their readership in real and lasting ways. As legacies go, that’s a pretty great one.

'Bobby Wonderful: An Imperfect Son Buries His Parents'
By Bob Morris Terri Schlichenmeyer
$25.00 / $27.00 Canada 192 pages c.2015, Twelve
“IT’S PERFECT!” Once upon a time, those words were music to your ears – but then you grew up. You learned then that a made bed didn’t make the man, good enough generally was and, as in the new book “Bobby Wonderful” by Bob Morris, sometimes it’s better to ignore perfection and focus on a life – or lives – well-lived. As Bob Morris watches his husband, Ira, struggle with his mother’s ageing issues, Morris understands the emotions Ira’s going through. Caring for an elderly parent “has become the new normal” Morris says, and he should know: he helped tend to his own parents at the ends of their lives. As his mother lay dying first, Morris remembered how, when he was a child, she encouraged him to see beauty in the world around him. She loved music and was “a good mother” whose messy, painful death brought out the worst in Morris and his brother. Oh, how they fought, though her passing also showed Morris how much he truly loved and admired his older sibling. At the funeral, Morris only wanted to talk about his mother but “nobody seems to know how.” Not long afterward, on a “sunny summer Monday,” Morris’ father tried to commit suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills. Though he’d seemed to heal well from his wife’s illness and death – at age eightysomething, he’d plunged back into the dating scene – his “quiet despair about his failing heart,” previously unnoticed, shook the Morris brothers to their cores. Things became worse, and as their father began to desperately “hound” Morris for pills to end his life, Morris looked for ways to enhance his father’s days but time was running out and they both knew it.
During his last hospitalization, the elder Morris told his sons that he wanted off life support. It was a wish they let him have. “Caring for your parents is an opportunity,” says Morris. But “We have no parents now, nobody to love us in the way they did... And we also have no worries now, no concerns for a suffering so close that it often felt like our own.” Some 65 million of us, says author Bob Morris, are caregivers; most are caregivers for someone over age fifty. That could be why this memoir will strike a chord for many Baby Boomers but, aside from commonbond feelings that children of ageing parents will find familiar, “Bobby Wonderful” is also a love letter wrapped inside a very beautiful, moving story. Morris’s cherished memories of his parents’ good times seem to buffer the pain of loss, and that he shares those vivid personal recollections is a delight. Still, readers get real peeks of irritation here, exasperation, even anger sometimes, which totally fit in this memoir. I would have, in fact, been disappointed without them. My best advice is to grab tissues before you start this book. You’ll have abundant reason to use them, especially if you’re caring for your own parents. If that’s the case, for you, “Bobby Wonderful” lives up to its title.

f you hear the words “vegan restaurant” and imagine a big plate of alfalfa sprouts you’re not exactly wrong, but most vegan restaurants offer far more than that, and many have meals that would satisfy all but the most carnivorous. Some use meat alternatives such as soy, wheat gluten or nuts to create meat and dairy substitutes that are delicious. Other dishes don’t even try to replace the meat and make

However, that’s the only negative I can offer. The black bean burger was among the best I’ve ever had and the hand cut fries were perfectly prepared. Priced at $15, it is no more expensive than comparable places (and it comes on a gluten-free bun!). The Thai red curry ($16) was equally successful. It featured crunchy bok choy, red peppers, broccoli, onion and ponzu marinated grilled tofu. It had just the right amount of heat and the sauce was so good I wanted to lick my plate. This dish usually comes with jasmine rice, but I subbed quinoa. With a vegan meal you can splurge on dessert without feeling guilty. The options are just as enticing as the rest of the menu; carrot cake, key lime cheesecake, ice cream sundae or chocolate cake with Kahlua buttercream and chocolate ganache. While you may see the words, butter or cream, these dishes are still vegan; using dairy and egg alternatives. While Sublime may be the best known vegan restaurant in the area, it certainly isn’t the only one. Here are some more casual spots to check out.

If you need another reason to give Sublime a try, all of the restaurant's profits go to organizations that promote animal welfare and a vegan lifestyle. We began our meal with the cashew cheese plate. I challenge you to compare this to the richest goat’s milk product. It is presented with a smear of olive tapenade and a small bowl of kim chee vegetables. The only negative I can offer is that it comes with only three small pieces of cracker (they call it crostini), not nearly enough for the amount of cheese offered. I asked for more and was told there would be an additional charge. That is ridiculous, given the $11 tab for this dish. ecipes here are based on “raw” foods. the vegetables the star of the dish. Either approach can produce quite satisfying meals. While my favorite vegan restaurant, Native Foods, hasn’t opened a South Florida branch yet (you’ll have to go to California, Chicago or D.C.), there are enough options from high end dining to fast food to satisfy vegan, vegetarians, or anyone wanting to eat a little healthier, even a “meat-aholic” like me. Brooks Braselman, left, and David Gordon star in “Reflection of Evil: Die Sister Twin, Die” at Empire Stage. Stacey Bean and actor Brooks Braselman first met in New York 20 years ago. Since then, Braselman, who frequently performs in drag, has become a muse for the Arkansas based playwright. Their latest collaboration, “Reflections of Evil: Die Sister Twin, Die,” which premiered last weekend at Empire Stage, is another masterpiece of campy satire. The play is a riff on the 1946 film, “A Stolen Life,” in which Bette Davis plays twins, one good, the other evil. In Bean’s work, Braselman plays both Ann and Bettie Wallace, young coeds home for the summer break. Ann is studious and virginal and Bettie, well, is not. Their widowed mother, Mrs. Wallace (Janet Weakley), hurriedly prepares the New England house after some hilarious banter with the family’s black maid, Hydrangea (Erin Pittleman), who is very obviously not black. “But every white family has a black maid,” Mrs. Wallace insists as Hydrangea rolls her eyes. The twins, thanks to convenient entrances and exits, reveal they are both competing for their new love, mechanic Phillip (David Gordon), who they met while filling up the car on the edge of town. When the girls get desperate, a sailing trip provides the opportunity for one to steal the other’s man—with a couple silly plot twists.
Braselman is familiar to Fort Lauderdale audiences from his gender bending roles in “Mommie Queerest,” “Silver Balls” and “The Facts of Life: The Lost Episode,” but he is perhaps at his best in this role, thanks to the playwright’s intimate understanding of his acting gifts and idiosyncrasies. Kudos go to Braselman for lumbering on after an accident several weeks ago that left him wearing big therapeutic plastic boots. Big black culottes hid the boots and clever accessories facilitated his quick costume changes. Weakley is equally hilarious as the naïve mother and Pittleman gets some of the best one-liners in the script. Gordon, even though he’s cast as a mechanic, is at times suave and debonair like so many ‘40s and ‘50s actors, the straight man in the cast with that proper WASP-y accent. Michael McClain contributed a handsome set in the intimate Empire Stage space with lots of doors for the quick entrances and exits that characterize farce. Bean and Preston Bircher’s audio design pulls heavily from the great composers of the silver screen including David Raksin (“Laura”) and Bernard Herrmann, who penned the famous themes for Alfred Hitchcock’s films. “Reflection of Evil” is silly summer fun that will entertain both gay and straight audiences.
“Reflection of Evil: Die Sister Twin, Die” is playing at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flager Drive in Fort Lauderdale, through Aug. 2. Tickets are $30 at EmpireStage.com.

LOVE LETTERS BY
A.R. GURNEY DIRECTED BY GREGORY MOSHER “A SUPERL ATIVE NEW BROADWAY PRODUCTION.” – Ent er tainment We ekly
Beauty by The Organic Face Hair by FHI heat, Produced by Erik Rosete & Parker Whitaker Productions. A unique show out of Los Angeles is making its debut at Miami Swim Week this year, bringing together the arts, fashion, and charity. Art Hearts Fashion will be a runway show filled with big-name brands as well as donations going to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “It was always like my second home and it’s always been a dream of mine to do something in Miami,” said Erik Rosete, the founder of the show. The fashion show is taking place on July 16 in Miami Beach and will feature looks from Mister Triple X, Just Bones Boardwear, CARIO-CA SUNGA Co., Koko Blaq, and Amato by Furne One. The brands will showcase a variety of looks, from edgy swimwear to all-American boardshorts. After the show, Lacoste is hosting an after-party at the W South Beach. Rosete, based in Los Angeles, started Art Hearts Fashion when he took a number of fashion lines under his wing to rebrand them to gain their full potential in the fashion world. Working in Los Angeles and New York, he noticed that some markets wanted purely department store looks, where others were all about fashion being an art form. So, he created an underground event where fashion photographers, designers, and performance artists could come together in one place and strut their stuff. It did so well, the show went to the prestigious New York Fashion Week’s grand finale show. “We always tell a story through our shows,” he said. “The focal point is not going to be the establishment, it’s going to be the artistic, cool brands.”
Now, Rosete is looking to complete the fashion trifecta by bringing the show to Miami. “We wanted to find a place where I could be all about the swimwear design,” he said. “I love hot boys and hot girls and I’m really excited to put a lot of them down the runway.” Art Hearts Fashion has always been involved with charities, and Rosete has previously worked with the Women’s Cancer Research Foundation and Hurricane Sandy relief. A little over a year ago, Rosete teamed up with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and it has been the show’s charitable partner ever since. They’ve donated $100,000 in monetary and in-kind donations to the charity, including awareness campaigns, store appearances, and clothing donations. “[AIDS] is always a taboo topic, especially in the fashion world,” Rosete explained. “It’s affected a lot of people and it’s important for people to stand out and say, ‘It’s OK to raise awareness about it, it’s OK to take part in something that’s associated with it.’” As if a form of poetic justice, Art Hearts Fashion and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation have the same abbreviation. Another charitable aspect of the Miami show is that a child interested in fashion will be working backstage to be a part of the inner workings of the show, thanks to the "Make a Wish Foundation." People can be a part of the fun by texting “Fight AIDS” to 41444 to donate any amount they’d like. If you include a note about Miami Swim Week in the message, you’re eligible to receive a pass to the show.
IF YOU GO What: Art Hearts Fashion When: July 16 at 7 p.m. Where: Collins Avenue between 21st and 22nd Streets in Miami Beach. More information: ArtHeartsFashion.com

Wentworth Convicted of Extortion
Hunter Houston
Guilty. On six counts. What was described as the trial of the century in gay porn came to a predictable and, quite frankly, boring conclusion last week when a federal jury found porn star Jarec Wentworth (aka Teofil Brank) guilty on six counts of extorting Palm Beach telecommunications magnet Donald Burns. Wentworth, 25, faces a maximum of 53 years in prison when he is sentenced in September in Los Angeles. The jury found Wentworth guilty of extorting $500,000 and a luxury car from Burns, who made his fortune in the MagicJack franchise. This sordid trial saw several well-known public figures connected to the principals due to Burns' political activity. Some of the models/ escorts involved were linked to politicians and entertainment executives. The bombshell in the trial came when a Sean Cody Studio model "Taylor" (aka Justin Matthews, Justin Griggs) admitted to having a relationship with Hollywood mogul David Geffen of DreamWorks fame. Matthews/ Griggs also admitted to escorting for Burns. In
testimony, Matthews/Griggs admitted Burns flew him and other escorts to Palm Beach and Nantucket, Mass. for group sex parties. Wentworth has been in F.B.I. custody since March when he was arrested in a sting at the Los Angeles Starbucks.
