Ugandan Activist Calls For Visibility

Dr. Frank Mugisha, executive director of Sexual Minorities Uganda and a leading human rights activist in east Africa, is calling for visible leaders to step forward and present positive role models for the LGBT community. In an interview with the British news organization, Pink News, Mugisha said “we need entertainers, footballers. We need role models to start speaking up because these are people who ordinary Ugandans respect, and then, Ugandans will emulate them and say ‘Okay, if someone I like is okay with
homosexuality, I have no problem.” Uganda has taken a hard stance against gays with lawmakers often advancing bills to criminalize homosexuality. Mugisha told Pink News that most Ugandans decline to discuss sex in public. “It’s African not to talk about it…people would rather not talk about sex in general.” Mugisha’s comments come as U.S. Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTI Persons, Randy Berry recently returned from a two day visit (July 1315) to Uganda to meet with senior government representatives.

In his 2008 book, “On My Honor,” Perry wrote openly, active gays would distract from scouting’s mission which is “character building, not sex education.” MEMBER

Def Jam Founder On The Red Eye Lineup John McDonald One of the most recognizable artists in hiphop and graphic design is leaving his mark on Fort Lauderdale this week. Cey Adams, founding creative director of the legendary music label Def Jam Recordings, is scheduled to appear Saturday, July 25, at “Red Eye” – an art explosion hosted by ArtServe. Billed as “A Warholian Art Happening,” the event is bringing together several artistic elements (food, music, film and, of course, art) to celebrate the nonprofit’s 25th anniversary. Adams’ participation is the crown jewel of “Red Eye,” said ArtServe President and CEO Jaye Abbate. “For our 25th anniversary, we brought in one of the pioneers who launched the movement that inspired RedEye for an artistic residency in our community,” said Abbate. Adams grew up in New York City, spray painting subway cars and going to early morning music shows with the likes of the
Beastie Boys and Run-D.M.C. Now 52, he is a respected voice in graffiti expression and speaks to young people about channeling their energy in a productive fashion. During his visit to South Florida, Adams will join the Urban League in working with students at Fort Lauderdale’s Dillard High School in a mentoring role. On Saturday, Adams is slated to appear at ArtServe’s “Red Eye” event from 6 to 10 p.m. He is expected to discuss his work and display his new “Trusted Brands” series, which features corporate creations from ad campaigns such as Nike and Pepsi. His presence, Abbate said, provides “amazing opportunities for local artists and turbocharges the event for the public.” Included on the “Red Eye” itinerary are screenings of the hip-hop Cuban documentary “Coming Home,” and the Jean-Michel Basquiat film, “The Radiant Child.”
ArtServe is located at 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.ArtServe.org or call (954) 462-8190.

LGBT Student Nondiscrimination Amendment Fails in Senate (SFGN) The U.S. Senate defeated an education bill amendment that would have provided LGBT students with nondiscrimination and anti-bullying protection in schools reports Metro Weekly. The amendment was sponsored by Sen. Al Franken and based on the Student Nondiscrimination Act that Franken has introduced four times the report says. Franken attached the amendment to the Every Child Achieves Act, an amendment and revision of parts of the No Child Left Behind Act. “The amendment would have prohibited schools or school boards from discriminating against students based on their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender
identity. It would also have required school administrators to step in when they are aware that discrimination, harassment or bullying of LGBT students is taking place. If school districts were noncompliant, they could have been sued by parents and students for failing to act.” The amendment was supported by a majority of the vote, but fell short of the 60 required to attach it to the bill. “Franken previously told BuzzFeed prior to the vote that he believed his legislation would settle questions about restroom use by transgender students by allowing them to use the restroom that corresponds to their correct gender identity.”

Roberts Becomes First Thomas Out Evening News Anchor
(EDGE) Thomas Roberts made TV history last weekend by becoming the first openly gay evening news anchor on network TV, the Huffington Post reports. Roberts, 42, anchored NBC's "Nightly News" Saturday and told The Advocate that filling that role was a "huge honor." The magazine points out Roberts, who hosts his weekly show "MSNBC Live With Thomas Roberts," led with the story about 2016 presidential hopeful Donald Trump's remarks about 2008 GOP presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain. Back in March, The Advocate asked the journalist if he was being vetted to fill in the prestigious nightly news chair. "They haven't called yet. It would be historic, and I am willing and able... I'm working in the land of opportunity," he told the publication at the time. Along with his MSNBC show, Roberts also hosts a weekly online show called "OutThere," which focuses on LGBT issues. Roberts came out in 2006 and married his partner of 12 years in 2012. A few out news castors are currently on cable TV, notably MSNBC's Rachel Maddow and CNN's Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon.

(Lambda Legal) Kevin M. Cathcart, who has been the Executive Director of Lambda Legal since 1992, announced that he will retire when his contract ends at the end of April, 2016. Lambda Legal is the oldest and largest nonprofit legal organization working for justice and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and people living with HIV. When Cathcart assumed leadership of the organization, it had a staff of 21 people and offices in New York and Los Angeles. Today, there are more than 100 staff members working across the country with offices in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas. Lambda Legal has a docket of more than 100 cases, and has helped win three historic Supreme Court cases that have changed the lives of LGBT people and the country: Romer v. Evans; Lawrence v. Texas; and the recent Supreme Court victory for marriage equality, Obergefell v. Hodges. Cathcart is the longest serving head of a major national LGBT nonprofit. Before coming to Lambda Legal, he served from 1984 to 1992 as the executive director of Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) in Boston, New England's LGBT and AIDS legal organization. In all, Cathcart has been the Executive Director of a major LGBT and HIV legal rights organization for 32 years.

At Lambda Legal, he led the strategy to finally eliminate state anti-sodomy laws that criminalized sexual relations between consenting adults of the same sex, leading to the thrilling and game-changing 2003 Supreme Court victory in Lawrence v. Texas. The Board Co-Chairs announced that the organization will conduct a search, beginning this fall, to replace Cathcart.
Period Open Lambda Submissions Literary Awards
(Lambda Literary) Entering their 28th year, the Lambda Literary Awards (Lammys) honor books in more than twenty genres ranging from literary fiction and poetry to speculative fiction, graphic novels and memoir. "As the most comprehensive LGBTQ book awards, the Lammys ensure that LGBTQ stories are recognized and retold as part of the literature of the world," said Lambda Literary Award Administrator Kathleen DeBold. Books submitted for consideration in this Lammys cycle must be published between January 1st and December 31st, 2015 and meet the Lammys Submission Guidelines. Finalists will be announced in March 2016 and Lammy Awards will be presented at the annual Lambda Literary Awards gala planned for early June of 2016 in New York City. Lambda Literary is, for the first time, adding the Lammy category of Transgender Poetry in response to the growth in the genre. "Poetry is the byway through which the lyricism of our crucial emotional and intellectual interior lives can be fully realized," said William Johnson, Lambda Literary Managing Editor who has been working closely with Trans poets and publishers to establish this new Lammy category. "By offering a Trans Poetry Award, Lambda Literary affirms the importance of poetry as a literary form that offers dynamic insights into our genuine selves, as well as the vital significance that these insights play in our ongoing cultural conversation." The revised guidelines and online submission form are available on the Lambda Literary website. The submission period will close on December 1, 2015.

Conservatives Warn IRS Could Target Gay Marriage Opponents (AP) Last month's Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage has some conservatives warning that the IRS could start revoking the tax-exempt status of religious groups that oppose gay marriage. The attorneys general of 15 states have written Congress asking for legislation to protect religious schools and other groups. Bills in the House and Senate are gaining support.
Officials are responding to the Supreme Court ruling in June that required every state to recognize same-sex marriages. In a brief statement, the IRS said Thursday the ruling will not affect the standards agents use to evaluate tax-exempt organizations. Democrats, meanwhile, say Republicans are creating a straw man to fire up the GOP base as they try to resist America's changing social mores.
Judge Awards Attorney Fees in Gay Marriage Case USW.Va.
(AP) A federal judge has ruled that West Virginia must pay about $92,000 to lawyers who fought the state's same-sex marriage ban. The Charleston Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1HD07oq ) that fees approved Thursday by U.S. District Judge Robert Chambers were less than one-third the amount the lawyers requested. He said the number of hours billed and the hourly rates were excessive for West Virginia. Attorney General Patrick Morrisey's office had opposed awarding the attorney fees, saying the county clerks who were named as defendants acted in good faith when they enforced the ban. Chambers said the 11 attorneys from three firms brought a proper lawsuit and deserved to be paid. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution requires states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex applicants.
Bakers Make Big Bucks Bigoted From Backers
(EDGE) Bigots sure do take care of their own. The anti-gay religious right persecution machine would like you to think that Alan and Melissa Klein are in financial ruin. Guess again. Faced with a court order to pay $135,000 in damages for violating Oregon's anti-discrimination law for refusing to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple on religious grounds, Alan and Melissa Klein hit the jackpot with a crowdfunding campaign, whose revenue has far exceeded any well-deserved fines the pair of bigoted bakers have to pay.

// 7.22.2015 // SFGN.com //
As reported by Politico , Oregon bakery Sweet Cakes by Melissa owners Alan and Melissa Klein turned to crowdfunding to raise money after their business closed in 2013 as a result of the lawsuit against them. They managed to raise $109,000 from a GoFundMe campaign that was pulled by the crowdsourcing site, when they changed their policy involving fundraising for discrimination. After being 86'd from GoFundMe, the Kleins moved their online fund raising initiative to the faith based fundraising company Continue to Give. That's when the real money started pouring in. As of this writing, in less than 12 weeks the Kleins have received over $370,000 from the Continue to Give campaign alone. That in addition to the $109,000 they were allowed to keep from their GoFundMe campaign. And while the Kleins may have grossed nearly $480,000 from donations (a huge chunk of which will have to cover court costs, legal expenses and that $135,000 damages ruling), their windfall pales in comparison to the $844,000 donated online in support of the owners of the Indiana pizza shop who said they would refuse to cater pizzas for gay weddings.
Dunham and Jenni Konner Lena Start Digital Newsletter
(EDGE) "Girls" creator Lena Dunham and her production partner Jenni Konner are getting into the newsletter business, according to a recent article in CNN. The newsletter will be a viable business, but the women say it's also another outlet for their opinions and ideas. While "Girls" on HBO is scripted, the free newsletter is a long-form way to "share our voices," Konner told CNNMoney. The weekly newsletter will be called Lenny and will launch in September. Dunham and Konner invited people to sign up for it on Tuesday. "We're going digital, Lena and I," said Konner, noting that Lenny is "the name that people call us by accident all the time on the walkie-talkie" on the set of "Girls." "It's also the name of an old Jewish man, and we love old Jewish men," she quipped. Konner said the newsletter is "going to be about feminism and politics and fashion and current events... twenties who are looking for a little bit more on the Internet." She also said "we'll probably go pretty hard at politics," including issues like reproductive rights that the women have spoken about before. On Tuesday the women announced Jessica Grose, formerly of Jezebel and Slate, as editor-in-chief of the newsletter, and Benjamin Cooley as CEO. Dunham told Buzzfeed that she wants subscribers who have a wide variety of interests: "People who want to talk about radical politics but also want to talk about fashion and also want to talk about Rihanna, and also understand that all of those things can be happening at the same time."

awker Reports CondĂŠ Nast CFO Gay Porn Star Hookup
(EDGE) In the report, Gawker alleges CondĂŠ Nast CFO, David Geithner, who happens to the be the brother of former Obama Treasure Secretary Tim Geithner, attempted to pay a gay porn star, who is only referred to as "Ryan" in the story, $2,500 for "2-3 hours" of his time. Gawker provides a number of screen shots of alleged text messages between Geithner and the gay porn star. Gawker reports Geithner, who is married to a woman and has three children, planned to meet Ryan on July 11 in Chicago, and was willing to pay for airfare and hotel costs, as well as $1,250 up front for Ryan's time. But the alleged meet up never happened, however. As the two texted in the days prior to the scheduled rendezvous Ryan figured out that Geithner is a big-time CFO who is also politically connected. And it just so happened that Ryan was in need of legal help.
N
Gawker reports Ryan, who lives in Texas, has an ongoing discrimination lawsuit between himself and his landlord. Geithner also gave a statement to Gawker about the story and the allegations. "I don't know who this individual is. This is a shakedown. I have never had a text exchange with this individual. He clearly has an ulterior motive that has nothing to do with me," he said. Though Gawker protected the gay porn star's identity, the NSFW gay porn site Str8UpGayPorn claims "Ryan" is Derek Truitt, who performs under the name Brodie Sinclair. Nevertheless, Str8UpGayPorn also reports on the backlash Gawker has received on social media since revealing that Geithner allegedly tried to hook up with a gay porn star. A number of Twitter users are even calling for a boycott over outing the CFO.
ew Web Comedy About Life with HIV
Photo: Facebook.
(EDGE) Being single, middle-aged and HIV plus in New York City isn't always easy, but "Merce" couldn't be happier! Hailed as "Seinfield with HIV" by Poz Magazine, Merce follows the adventures of an HIV plus Polyanna who sings and dances his way through life in search of self-acceptance and true love. With his gal-pal roommate, three gay guy fairies that appear to him in musical fantasy sequences, and his Mama (on a webcam) always at his side, he's gonna make it after all. The series is a surprising, bawdy look at HIV today, proving that life can be positive, even when you're HIV plus. Created by openly gay HIV plus writer/ performer Charles Sanchez, "Merce" was inspired by the rich lives and bright spirits of people living with HIV today. "One of my biggest gripes about any HIV
movie or TV show is that it's always tragic," says creator Charles Sanchez, "always about 30 years ago when we were in the midst of the crisis. No one is really writing about what it's like to have HIV today. 'Merce' is a modern HIV story. There is an amazing negative stigma attached to HIV, and it's outdated. It's unbelievable how the mention of HIV can still invoke fear in people, and the reality is that it's no longer the death sentence it was 20 or 30 years ago. It's considered a manageable, chronic condition, and although it's still serious, it's totally possible to live a full, complete, healthy, sexy, fun life while managing HIV. I made the show a comedy because comedy is the best way to show truth, and is a great way to change people's perceptions. Funny, like music or love, is an international language." soflagaynews //

die Windsor Receives First Absolute Brightness Award
Photo: Facebook.
(EDGE) The producers of the new play "The Absolute Brightness Of Leonard Pelkey" announced that civil rights hero Edie Windsor was the first recipient of the Absolute Brightness Award. The award is given to a unique individual who is a shining beacon in their community, and an inspiration to live as one's truest self. Ms. Windsor was given the Absolute Brightness Award after the evening performance on Thursday, July 16, at the Westside Theatre, New York. Edie Windsor has spent most of her adult life breaking boundaries. Windsor's 40year engagement, and finally, marriage to Dr. Thea Spyer was honored in the critically acclaimed documentary "Edie & Thea: A Long Engagement" and her role as the lead plaintiff in the case of United States v. 4/9/2015 1:03:28 PM WindsorSFGN_Florida_House3.pdf is arguably the most1 infl uential legal precedent in the struggle for LGBT marriage
equality. In its landmark 2013 ruling, the Supreme Court overturned Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act and was a legal victory for the same-sex marriage movement in the United States paving the way for the U.S. Supreme Court's 2015 ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. "One of the greatest storytellers of his generation" (New York Times), James Lecesne portrays every character in a small Jersey shore town as they unravel the story of Leonard Pelkey, a tenaciously optimistic and flamboyant 14 year-old boy who goes missing. A luminous force of nature whose magic is only truly felt once he disappears, Leonard becomes the unexpected inspiration for a town as they question how they live, whom they love and what they leave behind. "Absolute Brightness leaves you beaming with joy." (New York Times).

ontana Officials Deny Wedding License for Polygamous Man
Photo: Facebook.
(AP) Montana officials have denied a marriage license to a man who sought to be legally married to both of his wives after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the right of gay couples to wed. Deputy Yellowstone County Attorney Kevin Gillen wrote in his letter Tuesday to Nathan Collier that the Supreme Court's ruling last month did not expand the number of people in a marriage and Montana's antibigamy laws still apply. Collier, 46, legally wed his first wife, Victoria, in 2000. He and his second wife, Christine, held a religious wedding ceremony in 2007 but did not sign a marriage license. Nathan and Christine Collier applied for a marriage license after the Supreme Court ruling. They were initially denied, but county clerk officials said they would consult with
the county attorney's office before giving a final answer. Nathan Collier said people in polygamous relationships deserve marriage equality, and he is meeting with attorneys with plans to file a lawsuit. "They want to lock us in cages because we wish to marry," Collier said Thursday. "I could sleep with my wife and procreate out of wedlock and that would be just fine, but if I want to marry her, I'm a criminal." Collier is a former Mormon who was excommunicated for polygamy and now belongs to no religious organization. He said he and his wives hid their relationship for years but became tired of hiding and went public by appearing on the reality cable television show "Sister Wives."

Police Stop Lesbian Dildo Altercation (SFGN) A Florida woman was charged with domestic battery after “shoving a dildo” in her partner’s face and grabbing her arm during an argument, according to St. Petersburg police. A St. Petersburg police officer was present when the confrontation occurred in the home of Annette Kielhurn and Gamze Capaner-Ridley reports the Smoking Gun. Capaner-Ridley had filed a domestic violence injunction against Kielhurn the previous day, and the officer was there to oversee the removal of Capaner-Ridley’s belongings. The officer had issued Kielhurn a warning when she had shoved Capaner-Ridley during an argument over ownership of a dress earlier. When Kielhurn again became physical over ownership of a dildo, the officer placed Kielhurn under arrest for domestic battery.

Walker on Scouts Ban of Gay Leaders
(EDGE) Republican presidential contender Scott Walker is struggling with the issue of gay Boy Scout leaders. The Boy Scouts of America has taken steps to end the blanket ban on gay adult leaders and let Scout units set their own policy. That prompted Wisconsin's governor to express support for the ban. The governor told the Independent Journal Review website the ban "protected children and advanced Scout values." Afterward, he tried to clarify the statement, saying he did not mean physical protection from gay leaders but protection of boys from the public debate. Now, though, he's no longer saying the ban should remain. He says that's for the scouting organization to decide. Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," Walker also said he doesn't know whether being gay is a choice.

(SFGN) “I write to express my concern at the bisexual erasure language in your Huff Po piece. I'm glad you wrote it and I share the core of its sentiments but leaving out bi people from the litany of those who benefit from the SCOTUS decision is simply not ok. Alternating it with references to LGBT (thus putting the B back in, along with the T) is merely confusing. I thought you had my back. I thought you understand what being a bi ally is about. I thought you understood that bi people have been a KEY part of the marriage equality battle from the beginning, whether recognized or not.” Loraine Hutchins’ response was in regard to the article "After Marriage Equality, What Will We Create Next?," and the author has since devoted another column in apology. "The block came into force during Caitlyn's 10-minute acceptance speech, in which she issued an appeal for compassion on behalf of trans youth. "An outcry erupted when late teenage basketball player Lauren Hill, was passed over for the award. Hill achieved her goal of playing college basketball while battling an inoperable brain tumor and raising money for cancer research." Twitter spokesperson Nu Wexler referred to an interview with Vijaya Gadde, the company's general counsel in the Washington Post in April. "In addition to improving users' ability to control their own Twitter experiences, in recent months we have invested heavily in tools and enforcement solutions that enable us to better detect, act on and limit the reach of abusive content."

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush is managing to steer clear of any collateral damage from the Donald Trump drama machine. Bush campaigned in San Francisco last week, demonstrating his willingness to reach out to the tech community by using the ride sharing app Uber. While in the liberal stronghold, Bush was asked by a gay man his thoughts about the same-sex marriage debate. As reported by CNN, Bush told the man, "I don't think you should be discriminated because of your sexual orientation." Additionally, Bush used a hypothetical situation to reason his way through the topic. "If a gay couple comes in and says I want to buy flowers, you should be obligated to sell them flowers. Doing otherwise would be discrimination," Bush said. "But if that couple asked you to participate in the wedding, and you said based on my conscious, 'I shouldn't' or 'I won't,' you should not be fined." Meanwhile, on the local front, tensions simmered at the Oakland Park Democratic Club meeting Monday night. Guest speaker Aaron Darr, representing the Hillary For America campaign, told the audience it was time "to take our country back." This did not sit well with some audience members, including Florida Representative Gwyn Clarke-Reed (D-Deerfield Beach) who cautioned Darr about the dangers of the phrase. Darr clarified and said he meant Democrats needed to turn out and vote in order to regain control of the U.S. House and Senate. In terms of the Hillary Clinton campaign, Darr remarked, "we do realize we have to earn every vote and this will not be a coronation." The meeting was attended by about 60 people, including Clarke-Reed, Florida House

candidate Whitney Rawls (D-Pompano Beach), and former Florida House candidate Scott Herman. Supporters of Clinton and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders passed out stickers and literature at the meeting held inside the Unitarian Universalist Church. "We do not take sides among Democrats," said Club President Robert Muniz, noting a representative from the Bernie Sanders campaign would be speaking at the September meeting. "Everybody has a role to play in this primary," said Darr, who fielded several questions from the audience following his speech. An openly gay man who lives in Largo, Darr told the audience he has been HIV Positive since the age of 16. Now 24, Darr travels the globe in an educational capacity to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS issues and to fight the shame and stigma he says is associated with the disease. "If you have skeletons in the closet, let them out and let them dance," he said.

Landmark Decision Prevents Employee Discrimination Based On Sexual Orientation
Lisa Keen
Keen News Service
I
n a decision that could provide important remedies to thousands of LGBT federal workers who might face sexual orientation discrimination, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled Thursday (July 15) that existing federal law prohibits employment discrimination against federal workers based on sexual orientation. Lambda Legal hailed the ruling as a “landmark” decision, saying it “authoritatively recognizes that federal workers mistreated because of their sexual orientation have a claim under Title VII.” Lambda added that the decision could have a positive impact for LGBT employees beyond the federal workplace. “This ruling is likely to have enormous positive effects because EEOC interpretations of Title VII are highly persuasive to the courts,” said Lambda Employment Fairness Strategist Greg Nevins. “Given the clarity and logic of this opinion, most courts are likely to stop simply referring to old, illogical rulings about Title VII coverage. A few may disagree, but most probably will be guided by the Commission’s straightforward approach.” President Clinton signed an executive order in 1998 to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation against federal civilian employees. And last April, President Obama added a prohibition against gender identity discrimination and discrimination by federal contractors. “The EEOC decision,” explained Nevins,
18
// 7.22.2015 // SFGN.com //
“affords a concrete remedy directly to the aggrieved party, i.e., the usual remedies available under Title VII. Under the President's Executive Order, discrimination could result in significant penalties for the employer/government contractor, but wouldn't directly result in the target of discrimination being made whole.” The decision is one that has been in the making at EEOC for some time. Last October, the EEOC filed a brief in a Seventh Circuit federal appeals court case, arguing that the EEOC and an increasing number of courts have recognized that “intentional discrimination” based on sexual orientation “can be proved to be grounded in sex-based norms, preferences, expectations, or stereotypes.” Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. It also prohibits an employer from retaliating against an employee who files a discrimination complaint. In the current EEOC case, Complainant v. Anthony Foxx, an air traffic control supervisor (who was not publicly identified by name) asserted that he was fired in retaliation for filing a complaint that he had been passed over for a promotion because he was gay. The employee filed a complaint three years ago after being fired from his position as a Supervisory Air Traffic Control Specialist at Miami International’s control tower. He said he was fired in retaliation for filing a complaint

alleging he was passed over for a promotion because he was gay. But the Equal Employment Opportunity office of the Federal Aviation Administration dismissed his complaint. The July 15 decision by the EEOC did not determine whether the employee’s FAA supervisors had, in fact, discriminated against the employee based on his sexual orientation; rather it sent that question back to the FAA, directing it to process it as an EEO complaint. In doing so, the EEOC decision states that “Title VII’s prohibition of sex discrimination means that employers may not ‘rely upon sex-based considerations’ or take gender into account when making employment decisions….This applies equally in claims brought by lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals under Title VII.” “A complainant alleging that an agency took his or her sexual orientation into account in an employment action necessarily alleges that the agency took his or her sex into account,” states the decision. “Title VII similarly prohibits employers from treating an employee or applicant differently than other employees or applicants based on the fact that such individuals are in a same-sex marriage or because the employee has a personal association with someone of a particular sex,” wrote the commission. But as important as the ruling in Complainant v. Anthony Foxx is, it does not compensate for the lack of explicit language in federal law prohibiting sexual orientation discrimination. Long-time gay legal activist Evan Wolfson of the national Freedom to Marry project noted that the current Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) in Congress seeks to prohibit discrimination not just in employment but also in housing, public accommodations, education and federal funding. The EEOC decision “avoids uncertainty that makes it more difficult for both
SouthFloridaGayNews
individuals and employers.” Nevins agrees. “Even if this [EEOC] decision was adopted by every court and carried out to a natural conclusion, it still wouldn’t accomplish what ENDA is trying to do there.” And Nevins said the EEOC would “absolutely” help persuade Congress to move forward with ENDA and influence courts. The EEOC decision itself notes, “Some courts have also relied on the fact that Congress has debated but not yet passed legislation explicitly providing protections for sexual orientation.” “But the Supreme Court has ruled that ‘[c]ongressional inaction lacks persuasive significance because several equally tenable inferences may be drawn from such inaction, including the inference that the existing legislation already incorporated the offered change.’” "This historic ruling by the EEOC makes clear they agree workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, much like gender identity, is illegal,” said Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin in a statement released Thursday. “While an important step, it also highlights the need for a comprehensive federal law permanently and clearly banning LGBT discrimination beyond employment to all areas of American life. Such a law would send a clear and permanent signal that discrimination against LGBT people will not be tolerated under any circumstances in this country, and we remain fully committed to making that happen." A 2014 report by the Office of Personnel Management indicated there are 4.2 million U.S. federal employees worldwide. A 2012 survey indicated that about two percent (84,000) of the federal workforce identifies as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.

I also want to acknowledge all the young trans athletes who are out there — given the chance to play sports as who they really are. Most of all my family and my kids. I always wanted my children to be so proud of their dad because of what he has accomplished in his life. You guys have given so much back to me, you’ve given me so much support, I’m so so grateful to have all of you in my life. Thank you.
Sam (known to some as Casper) Taub, a 15-yearold transgender, committed suicide in April.
And certainly last, but not least, my mother. My mom who, just a little over a week ago, had to have surgery and I didn’t think she was going to make it, but she is here with me tonight to share this night. Now, you know I always thought that I got my courage and my determination from my dad. He landed on Omaha beach and fought all the way through World War 2. But you know what I’m realizing now, Mom, is that I got all those qualities form you. I love you very much. I’m so glad you’re here to share this with me. You know, it is an honor to have the word courage associated with my life. But on this night another word comes to mind and that is fortunate. I owe a lot to sports. It showed me the world, it has given me an identity. If someone wanted to bully me, well, you know what? I was the MVP of the football team. That just wasn’t going to be a problem. So for the people out there wondering what this is all about — whether it’s about courage or controversy or publicity — well, I’ll tell you what it’s all about. It’s about what happens from here. It’s not just about one person, it’s about thousands of people. It’s not just about me, it’s about all of us accepting one another. We're all different. That’s not a bad thing, that’s a good thing and while it may not be easy to get past the things you always don't understand, I want to prove that it is absolutely possible if we only do it together." In my mind, Phil Ochs was one of the greatest folk singers ever to play the American stage. In the 1960’s, his music and songwriting was as spectacular as Bob Dylan’s. Four decades after his passing, I still remember the magical lyrics from one of his songs: “You are living in the free world, and in the free world you must stay…”

In 1972, President Richard Nixon went to China to open the door to diplomacy and trade. But four myopic and mindless decades later, only 90 miles from Key West, America has steadfastly stonewalled Cuba.
How stupid, how foolish, how moronic.
Cuba Libre’. The moment that many thought would never come has come. The Cold War is over. It has been for a while. Fidel Castro’s opponents, like himself, are octogenarians. It’s time for a thaw and the twenty-first century to take hold. It’s time to embrace, not exclude. Thousands of Cubans are already coming and going to and from the U.S. Do we still need to risk their lives and force them to come over on rescue boats? Does Cuba really need to be on a state terrorism list? Cubans are dancing at the Boardwalk, playing in a Marlins uniform, and running cafes on South Beach. Who are we kidding? Lying on the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor Park in Key West two weeks ago, I was there when seven or eight refugees landed on the shore in a boat not fit for a Wilton Manors canoe race, let alone a trans Atlantic journey. Freedom has its rewards. Citizens on the beach cheered them as they reached American shores. They became the lead story on local TV stations. Gay Cubans aspire to American ideals, but gay lifestyles in Havana are no longer sacrosanct. Legally, homosexuality may remain an ‘ ideological deviation,’ but as we normalize our relationships with the Cuban people, nights on the island may take on a lot more color and vitality. Travel between Cuba and South Florida will be extensive. Havana will become a cultural center of nightlife and tourism again. Normalization works. Private enterprise is healthy, and Cuban cigars are good. It’s exciting, and not only for Cubans looking for American parts for their 1950’s Chevys. It would be nice to have a U.S. senator who understood that, but Marco Rubio is stuck in the past on Cuba, the way Mayor Jack Seiler of Fort Lauderdale is stuck in the past on gay marriage. They are chained by regressive ideologies they won’t liberate from their minds. It’s too bad. The future

will pass them by. They are like English colonialists fighting India’s freedom. The reality is that the Cuban Revolution has achieved its aim and proved its point. The little country that could has survived as a free state for over half a century since the Bay of Pigs. They beat back the Yankee Goliath. Missiles are no longer pointed towards the U.S. Instead, we are pointing them at ourselves, living in the past that no longer is. American high school textbooks won’t show it, but our national policy has isolated us from the rest of the world, not the other way around. Latin America and the United Nations have recognized Cuba for decades. In fact, according to Tom Hayden, who heads the California based Peace and Justice Resource Center, Cuba remains in the upper tier of the United Nations Human Development Index because of its educational and health care achievements. Forget empanadas for a minute. Cuba has won renown for fighting apartheid in Angola and dispatching medical workers to contain the Ebola virus- and I don’t think any territorial governors in Havana locked up their nurses. Despite the American embargo, Cuba has found a place in the world community, just not in city halls in South Miami. The State of Florida and the USA has been held hostage by a bunch of local politicians for too damn long. I know it would piss off a lot of Cubans in Miami, but damn, I would invite Fidel Castro to throw out the first pitch on Opening Day in South Florida. It’s time to throw out only decades of unnecessary hate and futile hostility, time to welcome the Cubans as our brothers and sisters, letting their families unite.

HOMO HISTORY 101 GREEK EDITION
History was never as straight as we are told. Recording our history means reporting the truth. Pier Angelo
I
n 'The School of Athens,' a fresco painted by Rafael in 1511, Aristotle (in blue) and Plato (in red) are depicted conversing among many other great students of philosophy.
SOCRATES, (469 – 399 BC)of Athens, the most influential thinker (470399 BC). Diogenes Laërtius tells that as a boy Socrates was loved by his teacher Archelaus, which is confirmed by Porphyrius, who says that as a youth of 17 Socrates did not disdain the love of Archelaus, because he was then very sensual. Later he managed to overcome this by eager brain-work. Socrates did not write himself, and his remarks about pederasty, as handed down by others, are not unequivocal. In the upshot, one may suppose that, as a Greek, he had an eye for the beauty of boys and young men. Also to him it was absolutely necessary to keep company with youths, but usually he renounced the physical activity of this love. He could do without sensualism because he compensated it by his incomparable art of shaping the souls of the youths and leading them as far as possible to perfection. He presented this power of continence as ideal also to others; still, it is nowhere documented that he demanded of everybody to follow his example, which besides would have been inconsistent with the wisdom of "the wisest of all Greeks".

Among the boys whom he loved were Agathon, Dion, Alexis, Aster. He was a philosopher, as well as mathematician. He is considered an essential figure in the development of philosophy, especially the Western tradition, Along with his teacher Socrates and his most famous student, Aristotle, Plato laid the foundations of Western philosophy and science. Alfred North Whitehead once noted: "the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.

Plato's disciple ARISTOTLE (384322 BC), the philosopher and universal scholar, whose ideas, notably his logic, dominated European thought for many centuries. According to antique historians he had love affairs with several of his adolescent students, among them the "ravishing" Nicanor. His writings cover many subjects – including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theater, music, rhetoric, linguistics, politics and government – and constitute the first comprehensive system of Western philosophy. ARISTIPPUS (ca. 435-355 BC), founded
a hedonistic school of philosophy, similar to the later epicurism: A wise man should enjoy all lust but not let himself be governed by it. He loved a boy named Euthichydes.
EURIPIDES (480-406 BC), the youngest of the three eminent Athenian tragedians, whose works reflect the doubts and insecurity of a skeptical mind and therefore have a special appeal to our time. He wrote 92 plays, of which 17 tragedies and one satiric drama have been preserved. One of the lost plays of Euripides was a tragedy entitled "Chrysippos" which treated the love of King Laios, the father of Oedipus, for the boy of that name. Very likely Euripides was caused to write it by the personal experience of his love for AGATHON, who was then a youth praised for his beauty as well as for his culture, and who later became himself a respectable playwright. In Plato's Symposium he appears as the host at a feast to celebrate the prize he has won for a drama. To all appearances the relationship between the two poets remained amorous and sexual long after the younger one had passed the age up to which this was regarded as becoming, and therefore the comedian Aristophanes made them the butt of gross jokes..

Reverend Patrick Rogers wants you to come back to the church. The newly installed senior pastor at First Congregational Church of Fort Lauderdale has a message for members of the LGBT community. “I understand how you feel because I have lived it too,” said Rogers. Rogers, a gay man, has experienced persecution by people using Christianity to justify their intolerance of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. He witnessed this method first-hand while living in Topeka, Kansas – home of the infamous anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church. Through all the name calling and condemnation, Rogers refused to let go of his faith. The native Tennessean returned to Fort Lauderdale this year to pastor an emerging spiritual community that is open and affirming to all walks of life. “This church is a safe place to be who you are,” Rogers said in an interview with SFGN. “We are watching people come into their own here and it is great to see.” Around 200 people attended a Saturday afternoon installation service for Rogers on July 11 at the church (2501 NE 30th Street), which he tenderly refers to as “the heart of Coral Ridge.” Built in 1962, the current sanctuary, with its towering triangular roof, is cited by the Broward County Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and Florida Engineering Society as a structure that exhibits “outstanding craftsmanship.” On July 18, the sanctuary hosted a performance by the Symphony of the Americas and in weeks prior welcomed the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. In addition to its arts program, the church takes an active role in helping Fort Lauderdale’s homeless population by serving a hot

lunchtime meal every Thursday. “UCC’s focus is social justice issues like helping the homeless, fighting poverty and working with immigrants,” said Rogers, referencing the church’s affiliation with United Church of Christ. At his installation service, representatives from the Florida Conference of the United Church of Christ presided over the ceremony which was attended by local clergy from other gay affirming congregations. “This church is growing,” said Barbara West, UCC Fort Lauderdale’s Director of Missions, a founding member. “It’s a church that has gone through its ups and downs. Right now we’re going up.” Rogers said the grace of God is the reason for UCC Fort Lauderdale’s spiritual revival. He said coming back to South Florida, where he had ministered during the early 2000s and studied seminary at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, felt like “coming home.” In reaching out to the LGBT community, Rogers said the church is keeping up with changing times. “Our faith is 2,000 years old, our thinking is not,” Rogers said.

Westway Initiates Tow Program For Drunk Drivers By Michael d’Oliveira
To cut down on drunk driving in the city, the Wilton Manors Police Department and Mothers Against Drunk Driving [MADD] have teamed up with Westway Towing to provide tows to impaired drivers. “This brings real meaning to the words ‘don’t drink and drive’ because you don’t have to,” said Darren Wells, manager of Westway Towing. Westway will provide the free tows from anywhere in Wilton Manors up to a distance of five miles with no hook-up fee. After that, they will charge $2.50 per additional mile. “There’s no reason to be drinking and driving in Wilton Manors,” said Mayor Gary Resnick. Commander Gary Blocker said the police department is working with MADD and local bars and restaurants to get the word out.
When officials decided to give the city’s tow contract to Westway in December of last year, after years with Sal’s Towing, Commissioner Julie Carson said Sal’s “Save A Life” program was important to the city. Since 1983, Sal’s has offered free tows to inebriated drivers anywhere in Broward County. When he started the program, owner Sal Bellassai said he tried to get other tow truck companies to join him but was unsuccessful. “You asked for it and we gave it to you,” said Craig Goldstein, owner of Westway. Unlike its new partnership with Westway though, the city “never took advantage” of the Sal’s Towing program, said resident Michael Rajner. WMG

Search For Assistant City Manager Underway By Michael d’Oliveira
Now that Wilton Manors officials have hired a new city manager, the search is on for a new assistant city manager. City Manager Joe Gallegos announced his retirement earlier this year and his replacement, current Assistant City Manager Leigh Anne Henderson, was chosen recently to replace him. Henderson, the first female
city manager in the history of Wilton Manors, will take over in October of this year. Other women have served as city manager in the past but only on an interim basis. Henderson was the first hired as a permanent replacement. Her replacement will start in September. WMG

While reflecting on the success of last week’s Road Safety Symposium that took place here in Wilton Manors, my thoughts keep circling around what is the next step? How do we move forward toward solving these critically important issues? As my thoughts raced forward, a culinary phrase popped into my head, ‘Mise en place.’ A phase not thought about for many years, probably not since French chefs drilled the phrase into my brain while attending culinary school. The phrase translates to, ‘putting in place,’ an essential first step toward having everything that is required prepped and in place before beginning to execute an important task. It was then I realized that this community must put our mise en place together as the first step before we can engage the regional planning authorities and move our agenda forward to reality. The Road Safety Symposium was a community driven event, hosted by our neighborhood associations working together with our soon to be new City Manager, Leigh Ann Henderson. The packed house with standing room only was a clear indication to the panelists and to our elected officials of the importance these issues are within our community. We came together seeking information and guidance from an amazing panel representing various regional agencies. We listened and learned how best to move these important issues ahead. The panel laid out roadmaps, procedures and some reality checks on what we need to do, what we can expect, and how to get the results we are seeking. A list of items needed to have our

mise en place in order, ready to move ahead to the next step. Sometimes moving ahead means leaving certain things behind. This can be a large hurdle for some to move beyond. Now is not the time to keep pushing outdated plans and expectations when all the players involved are ready for something new. We see a new approach by state officials at FDOT. We have a new player in town, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, who will have the source of funding needed for such projects. We see new stewardship in our city government with our new City Manager coming onboard. We see the reality of the ‘Complete Streets’ planning model already having an enormous effect in surrounding communities. So now is the time to embrace these changes, to take the information learned at the symposium, revise our expectations, define what we need as a community and begin to make it happen. Once this mise en place is in place, we will have the ability to work with our regional partners and create a better, safer community for residents, visitors, pedestrians, bicyclist and motorists. In the coming weeks, the neighborhood association officers will be meeting with our city officials to voice our willingness to join together with various community leaders and organizations to embark on a journey that will bring about these important changes. The time is ripe to have our wish list turned into a grand reality for our city. We have been given the tools and information to make it happen. Now it’s time to get to work!!! Why? “because life is just better here…” WMG

Community Development Block Grant [CDBG] funding totaling $65,000 is waiting to be spent on the Highland Estates neighborhood. Located north of Northeast 26 Street and east of Northeast 6 Street, Highland Estates is the only area of the city that qualifies for the funding. The funding, provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is given to cities to address unique community development needs. In the past, Wilton Manors has used CDBG funding to buy and develop the 14-space
overflow parking lot near Island City Park Preserve. Other uses include fitness stations, fencing, sidewalks, a drainage system, solar lighting, landscaping and street resurfacing. Resident Michael Rajner said the city hasn’t looked “outside the [park’s] fences” enough when using the funding to improve Highland Estates. He suggested improving sidewalks on Northeast 8 Avenue and said the city needs to make Highland Estates, and the city overall, more pedestrian friendly for people in wheelchairs. Carlos Fernandez agreed with Rajner.
Recently out of a wheelchair, Fernandez said sidewalks are often ill-equipped to handle wheelchairs and sometimes he had to get into oncoming traffic to get around. Resident Norman Schwartz also wants to see sidewalks improve. In a letter to commissioners, he said he regularly walks around Highland Estates with his dog and requested that more shade trees be added along the streets. Like Rajner, he also wants the city’s parks to be more dog-friendly. “I enjoy being able to sit in our parks to read a book on my walks, but with the city not
having dog welcoming parks within walking distance, I rarely visit the parks to enjoy their beauty,” wrote Schwartz. Commissioner Julie Carson agreed that parks should be more dog-friendly. The commission will decide how the CDBG funds are spent at a future commission meeting. Residents can still submit their ideas to the city manager’s office. Call 954-390-2100. WMG

Recap of 2014-15 High Season
Real Estate Geek
By James Oaksun Back in March I wrote a column about how prices and sales volume looked at the halfway point of the season. But now the final whistle has blown, Julian Edelman had a nice visit with me (kidding) and we can see the season in full. At the halfway point it appeared that the center of the Island City was where all the real estate action was occurring. Prices and volume were strong, much stronger than east of Dixie or west of Andrews. Did that continue? I've included two charts, one showing median sales prices for this past season and the three prior high seasons, and one for sales volume. Let's start by looking at prices. For the season, the median sales price of a single family home in Wilton Manors (arms length transactions only) was $360,000, down four percent from the 201314 season. Prices were down in both the east (-4%) and center (-6%) but were up in the west (+7%). In fact, for the first time since the 2011-12 high season, prices west of Andrews have gone ahead of prices in the center of town (but just slightly). In the first half of this season prices were very strong in the center of town, but decidedly less so in the other
two neighborhoods. In the second half, prices increased significantly (+16%) in the west and somewhat in the east also (+8%) but were down significantly in the center of town (-12%). Now looking at numbers of homes sold, total sales this past season increased 18 percent compared with the 2013-14 season. Sales volume in the 2013-14 season was down from the year prior. It is possible that lower inventories of properties available drove prices higher during that season, and then this past season, as more properties became available for purchase, a softening in valuations occurred. No one has a crystal ball, but as we head toward next season I would expect pricing (on a relative basis) to firm in the center of town and ease a bit in the west. Meaning, if prices generally increase I would expect a higher rate of increase in the center of town, and should they drop I'd expect a lower rate of decrease. WMG James Oaksun, Broward's Real Estate GeekSM, is a Realtor with the Wilton Manors office of RE/ MAX Preferred. In addition to having degrees from Dartmouth and Cornell, he is a graduate of the Realtors Institute (GRI).

Wilton Manors May Public Safety A Top Concern Decriminalize Marijuana As Wilton Manors Begins Budget Process By Michael d’Oliveira
A Broward League of Cities survey question has Wilton Manors city commissioners questioning their police department’s treatment of those arrested for marijuana possession. At the July 14 commission meeting, Mayor Gary Resnick brought up a Broward League of Cities survey that asks cities if they are considering a move to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana. Representatives from NORML, an organization based in West Park that works to reform marijuana laws, urged the commission to treat marijuana possession the same as a traffic ticket. Karen Goldstein, deputy director of NORML, said America’s war on drugs has failed to curb drug abuse and has created more problems – increased incarceration rates and convictions that hurt people’s chances for meaningful employment and other opportunities. “It makes no sense. It’s a failed policy.” Officials asked Commander Gary Blocker to look into how much money the city spends, via personnel hours, on processing individuals arrested for possession. He estimates between one and two hours is spent per arrest. That includes taking the suspect to the county jail in Fort Lauderdale for processing and filling out paper work. Last year, he said police
By Michael d’Oliveira
arrested between 200 and 250 people in Wilton Manors for marijuana-related charges. He will provide a more detailed analysis at a future commission meeting. “You put a dollar amount to that and you’ve got a persuasive argument [for decriminalization],” said City Manager Joe Gallegos. In June, Miami-Dade County decriminalized possession of 20 grams or less. That offense now only carries a $100 fine. In an interview with Local 10, Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine spoke in favor of the change. “We don't want marijuana smoking on the streets. That's still illegal. It's illegal to distribute or sell any marijuana or anything like that. But if someone's caught with under 20 grams, we don't want to ruin their lives.” It might not be as easy for Wilton Manors to decriminalize though. City Attorney Kerry Ezrol said the city may not be able to decriminalize something the county still wishes to enforce. Resnick, with an eye towards the possible legalization of medical marijuana in the future, also wants to look into passing zoning restrictions on where medical marijuana can be sold. Some cities, including Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, have already passed zoning restrictions. WMG
The city’s proposed budget includes funding one additional patrol officer, but by the time the budget is approved in September there may be more. “We need more boots on the ground,” said Vice Mayor Scott Newton. Currently, there are 18 patrol officers and four patrol sergeants. Mayor Gary Resnick agreed with Newton, saying that if public safety isn’t addressed “nothing else will matter.” Policing parks, specifically Colohatchee, which for years has been used by individuals to have sex, is also a concern. The Budget Review Advisory Committee recommended hiring two part time police aides to police the parks. To fund the positions, the committee suggested using the $20,000 budgeted for improving the vacant lots next to Hagen. Those lots were purchased by the city to eventually expand Hagen Park. Newton said he wants a full time park ranger to oversee Colohatchee in addition to the two current part time rangers. “We’ve had a problem with Colohatchee for a long time,” said Newton. “I’m the vice mayor of the city and I don’t want to go there. We have to do something. This commission needs to get off our rear ends.” Resnick said Colohatchee, a unique gathering of mangroves in the middle of builtout east Broward, used to be one of the parks he was most proud of when he first moved to the city. Now, say residents, the park is a magnet for unwanted sexual behavior that keeps many away. “I have pretty much given up on my neighborhood park,” said resident Carlos Fernandez who lives adjacent to Colohatchee. “There’s pimps, drugs . . . I took pictures of two guys masturbating.” In addition to more personnel overseeing the park, Newton suggested redesigning the bathrooms with one stall to make it harder for them to be used for sex. He also said the park
would have to be closed temporarily at some point, for an undetermined amount of time, to replace the decking, expand the dog park fencing and possibly remove the basketball court. Commissioner Julie Carson said more oversight also needs to be taken when it comes to keeping parks clean. With the cost of the Mickel Park redevelopment at about $1.6 million, Commissioner Tom Green cautioned that the city can’t spend a lot right away on Colohatchee. “We can’t build two new parks in two years,” said Green. “I’m not saying do the whole park at one time,” responded Newton. This year’s proposed budget is $31.1 million, an increase of $1.13 million over last year. The proposed operating millage rate will stay at 6.0683 but the overall millage has been reduced by 0.0454 because of reductions in the debt service. Although revenue will increase, including $443,439 from a jump in property values, the fourth highest in the county, there are also increases in expenses. Health insurance, pensions, salary increases and other costs added $650,000 to the budget. The cost of the water and sewer utilities, mostly due to capital improvements and debt service, is also expected to rise, $10.09 million this year over $9.3 million last year. In 2013, the cost was $6.5 million. That number, said resident Paul Kuta, warrants more discussion. “The time is overdue to have a serious conversation with Fort Lauderdale (which provides Wilton Manors with water) about the components of their cost which lead to their imposing annual increase of five percent for water and sewage charges,” said Kuta. The next budget meeting will be on Wednesday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the commission chambers. At the meeting, commissioners will vote on a tentative millage rate, preliminary special assessment rates and hold a budget workshop. WMG

n O g in p m a C y a G r u o Y Get nced camping enthusiast, takes readers Columnist Ric Reily, an experie through Florida’s gay campgrounds Ric Reily
Life is filled with sounds. Cities rumble with a constant cacophony of planes, trains and automobiles; interspersed regularly, particularly after dark, with a symphony of sirens, helicopter roar and uproarious eruptions of laughter and music. Rural landscapes vacillate with their own sounds of life, the occasional motor roaring down a nearby highway, a train rumbling down a distant track blowing its horn at deserted crossings on vacant country roads and a hum of insects in trees calling for a mate amidst the song of birds summoning evening. Camping in meadows or under overarching Water Oaks provides a front row seat to the symphony of evening. Even in the country music is an unrelenting undercurrent. Yet, no matter the music somehow the piece works; cicadas, black birds and finches, the distant train and an errant motorcycle rider meld into a peaceful work of art merging the purely
natural song with the pseudo natural end of day melody created by man. Those moments, moments before and after sunset, as each day yields to an encroaching dark, life reaches out its aural tentacles snaring a cocktail sipping campfire sitting gay man or women and their friends merging them into the concert of nature after dark in a gay campground. Gay campers are more friendly, open and inclusive than campers in mainstream campgrounds. You cannot pass someone in a gay campground and not get a hello, and probably also an offer to stop and sit a while. Passersby, many with dogs on leashes pulling eagerly ahead anticipating the next great news lying awaiting discovery by only a nose to the ground, smile or wave or nod or speak and some even drop in for a moment, a sit, a drink, or perhaps even a hope of connection.
Gay campers are more friendly, open and inclusive than campers in mainstream campgrounds. You cannot pass someone in a gay campground and not get a hello, and probably also an offer to stop and sit a while.
Urban environments provide for the constant stimulation of LGBT individuals. A raucous rush of being serially late for everything from the gym before work to a fundraiser after creates a frenzy some soon simply choose to call a life. Stay busy enough and questions of who you are and what you are doing are easily subverted into a dungeon of ignorance. Organized events provide a certain distraction. Running a marathon, riding a bicycle for a few days raising money, donating time to worthy causes, making dinner for a late arriving husband or wife before rushing off to an early evening theater can over time allow the illusion of a life fully lived. Until one day a friend says, usually off handedly, ‘Let’s go camping!’ The declaration often brings eyes to bear and conversations to a halt. Caught up in the urban lifestyle resplendent with its inherent expectations, gay camping had yet to rise to the fore. Which in no way means gay camping doesn’t exist, simply that it has yet to be discovered by many. Big time alert here; not only has gay camping been discovered it is enjoyed by many on a regular basis. With gay campgrounds in about twenty states and many of those having several, there are

perhaps a hundred gay campgrounds in the U.S. There is no formula for gay campgrounds and the concept would be difficult to impossible to franchise. Each is different in its topography, size, culture, ownership and governing authority. Gay campgrounds range from full blown resorts like The Sawmill near Dade City in Florida, which is a true gay community, to gorgeous Jones Pond, near Angelica, NY, with its generous and inclusive population of seasonal campers, to quiet oasis’ of tranquility like Lizard Landing in southeast Alabama and David’s Oasis near Bisbee, AZ. There are at least seven gay campgrounds in Florida, from Vitambi Springs and Camp Mars near Lake Okeechobee, The Sawmill and Camp David near Tampa and Orlando and Southern Comfort west of Gainesville near Cross City. Several others are located in the Panhandle. Gay camping is a freeing experience. It’s about leaving the usual and normal behind and embracing the unknown while meeting new friends, experiencing new things and creating new memories. Get out and get your gay camping on.

Camp Mars
CampMars.com 326 Goff Rd, Venus, FL 33960
863-699-6277.
Located 3.8 miles west of US27 on County Road 731, then one mile south on Goff Road. Camp Mars is near Venus, west of Jupiter. Photos: Facebook.
Camp Mars is a quiet, serene property most of a mile off the highway, and a lightly used highway at that. Dale, Tom and Korin are the face of the camp though there are also several part time employees. The forty-acre property is situated at the end of Goff Road through a gate alongside an endless pasture across which campers can enjoy spectacular Key West style sunsets, be those across grass rather than ocean. In years past sunset potluck dinners took place on the lawn in front of the office with everyone bringing a chair and a dish and settling in for the show. The potluck dinner became so popular it is now an integral part of the Camp Mars culture happening every Saturday night presided over by Korin with her wooden spoon poised to push back any attempt at early indulgence. Camp Mars has a total of 86 sites, about 60
RV sites, 12 rentals ranging from cabins, to yurts, to one to three bedroom houses with kitchens and baths. Many of the RV sites are new 50amp pull through sites designed and built to accommodate big rigs. Mars is mostly covered by enormous Live Oaks dripping with Spanish Moss. There are green pastures, lush tropical foliage, nature trails, ponds, creek, and oak hammock. Campsites are scattered hither and yon without apparent planning. The heated in ground clothing optional swimming pool is large with ample lounges, a shade area, appropriate music and unlimited sun. Mars is not a clothing optional property and caters to both men and women over the age of twenty one. Wi-Fi is available free throughout the park. There is no restaurant or bar service and the location of the property thirty minutes from the nearest retail bodes for good planning prior to arrival.
A recreation hall is the social center of Camp Mars. The Saturday night potluck dinner is not to be missed. I am amazed at the food a gay man or lesbian can cook up in a camper; I am lucky to get a decent ziti done. Bingo is a mainstay of many gay campgrounds and each has its ‘rules’; beware erroneously calling Bingo at Camp Mars. After bingo on weekends the recreation hall dims the lights and turns up the music for disco or country depending on the weekend theme. Korin was one of Dale and Tom’s first campers, hailing from Miami. Now she lives and works on Mars. On first meeting her some years ago she delivered fresh eggs from her chickens. Though she no longer raises chickens, she did make a point of stopping by to correct one point Tom made to me in conversation; she is eighty-eight years old, not eighty-seven. Korin, over and above being the most energetic eighty eight year old I have met also does antique repair. A year ago Mars almost lost her to sunstroke while she cleaned the chicken coops. There are no longer live chickens, at least the cock-a-doodle variety, at Mars. There is a strong community of permanent campers at Camp Mars.
Though no one is allowed to live there, there are no hard and fast rules as to the time limit. Seems you just have to have another address. The sense of camaraderie has expanded into a second home community. That community has a new infatuation, sailing. Yes, sailing in Central Florida. Puddle Ducks are Dale’s inspiration, he is an avid sailor, and a group of seasonal campers have gotten together to build and sail their oneperson crafts on nearby Lake June. In the past year the Boardwalk has been completed. The oddly geometric planking pattern crosses a marshy area to a secluded clearing furnished with chaises, tables and chairs and a barbecue grill. Camp Mars has a wedding officiant and the first same sex marriage has already been performed, on the new Boardwalk. Mars focuses on their seasonal camper population offering day passes to the park, yet no night nor annual pass. Though not a member of Friends With Benefits, the gay campground industry’s half price membership program, annual memberships at Camp Mars are only ten dollars.
The potluck dinner became so popular it is now an integral part of the Camp Mars culture happening every Saturday night.
Located west of Lake Okeechobee, Camp Mars is easily accessible for much of the south half of Florida. 32

Be careful what you know. Much of what we know is what others have said and may not necessarily be the case; as is the case with Camp David. For years I have been told that Camp David is inaccessible at the end of a narrow, overhung and treacherous dirt road. Yes, the road is dirt but it’s wide and cleared in height for big rigs. The road is rough most of the way and passable at slow speeds. Take your time it’s only two miles. Rumor has it that Camp David is for old gays. Yes, older gays do enjoy the property. They enjoy the compactness, the quiet and the sense of community spirit. Camp David does not sell alcohol so it’s an 18 and up property. It’s also the only clothing optional, male only, property in Florida. Camp David is quiet at 10 p.m. The retreat is a beautiful heavily wooded property with three lakes covering sixteen secluded acres of overarching Live Oaks dripping with Spanish Moss. From the monitored entrance gate the road meanders in a circle leading to thirty-five RV spaces with twenty, thirty, or fifty amp electric service. Many are permanent camps and there are plenty of transient spaces. Even tent spaces have electricity and water though primitive tenting is available that does not include either electricity or water. Those sixteen acres seem like a great deal more. In addition to the camp road there is the track that leads to The Point, an area away from the center of camp where campers can go to sun and commune in a clearing in the forest at the head of the nature trails. Campsites are situated around a lake with
tenting in a broad open space covered in shade. Social amenities are near the office, which offers free WIFI, and includes an outdoor trellis covered area with tables and chairs located near a water feature and the filled in swimming pool. The owner said the pool is filled in because of new Florida regulations governing swimming pools that will be cost prohibitive for Camp David to complete. Dan, the owner, has plans for a new pool. A clubhouse for games, TV, and community meals is nearby as is a video room. In addition to tenting and RV spaces Camp David offers cabin style rooms and some RV’s for rent. There is no restaurant or bar service, though that is more than compensated for by the community meals generally available. Most weekends one camper or another hosts everyone for breakfast or dinner. On special weekends Dan and his staff provide a community meal. The office store carries minimal supplies; enough to survive until morning should you arrive completely unprepared. A host of nearby attractions are available including the Withlacoochee Trail, a fortysix mile paved rail to trail ideal for biking, hiking and horseback riding. Dan has owned Camp David since 2005 and the campground has been gay since 2000 when it was converted from a rowdy straight campground. My preconceptions of Camp David are changed since my tour and I would happily give Camp David a try as I go by on a trip in or out of Florida.

Vitambi Springs Located twenty one miles south of Clewiston on County Route 835, Evercane Rd Dropping off US 27, a narrow two lane county highway, CR835, heads south from the east side of Clewiston along twenty one miles of endless sugarcane fields to Vitambi Springs. Watch for the entrance, the sign is a horned V logo with no name. Google maps tried to take me .8 miles too far. Looking down the road there appeared to be no good place to turn around a big rig if the entrance is missed. The resort is a beautiful well-maintained property with picturesque views, gorgeous sunsets and wideopen spaces. They must do a great deal of mowing. To the south of the two main loops encompassing eighty acres, are miles of mowed bike trails through the back one hundred and eighty acres. Be warned, the trails are not marked well and it’s easy to get turned around. Watch for the microwave tower for orientation. Accommodations include a wide
variety of private cabins, private rooms with shared bath, bunkhouse, sunny primitive tenting sites in large meadows, deeply shaded tent camping around the clothing optional pool, primitive tenting sites in a military theme area with outdoor showers, open air huts with queen beds, several single family homes and a limited number of RV sites. Solid roads are laid out with good turning radius for big rigs. Being off grid can be refreshing and with limited cell service and Wi-Fi only at the main lodge it is easy to come by at VS, though is accessible outside on the furnished back deck during closed hours. Sewer has been added at RV sites recently. There appear to be additional RV sites though Vitambi Springs owners declined to comment for this piece so there is no reportable data of how many RV sites are available. A year and a half

ago there were seven. All the occupied RV sites are easy to back in with plenty of space surrounding each. Clothing is optional on the south loop. No campfires are allowed at campsites and designated fire pits are located here and there. Community fire pits cause campers to meet other campers around designated fires. The VS staff is friendly and helpful. A beautiful dining room with large stone fireplace is open even when the kitchen isn’t. The restaurant and bar are open Friday through Sunday. Mountain bikes are handy for getting around, VS is 260 acres and the south half of the property is a quiet and secluded stretch of Florida scrub. There is plenty to do at VS, work out in the gym, walk the two loops of solid packed sand roads, talk with your neighbors, and get some sun at the clothing optional pool in the clothing optional section. Simply swimming is not the intent of the beautiful pool area. The pool is sized and of depth for socializing while cooling off. In the immediate area is a deep sand volleyball court including ball catching mounds at each end. Also in the pool area
is a tether ball pit, ladder golf range, paved paths, the mist room and an elaborate shower house. There is no pool bar, and food service is on weekends only. The remote Everglades location means VS is teaming with wildlife. On a recent two night visit we saw hawks, a pair of bald eagles, numerous deer, a possum waddling around in the dark just outside of the light ring, and of course mosquitoes. Bring your insect repellant. There is no swimming in the lake, reserve that for the pool. The dock in the lake has canoes for anyone to use. Also at the lake is a screened shelter, a good place to watch the sunset or enjoy a few moments respite from the incessant mosquitoes. A clear night brings beautiful stargazing. Also, on Friday and Saturday, Hanger 10, an air-conditioned multiuse room, comes alive with music you can dance to. VS is a member of Friends With Benefits, an association of gay campgrounds whose members offer half price memberships for holders of valid memberships at other associated campgrounds. In addition, VS offers half price memberships for nonFlorida residents.

Sawmill

Located two miles south of FL Route 50 immediately across the Withlacooche River; from the north slow down as you cross the bridge then immediately turn left Photos: Facebook.
Sawmill remains the premier Florida gay campground setting the standard for gay camping in Florida. Sawmill recently underwent [another] management change sweeping out the past and welcoming in new leadership with an expressed policy of guest first. New management includes a decorations designer, recently from Walt Disney World in Orlando, with the goal of returning Sawmill to the days of decorating to themes. Three years have passed since Sawmill became a Coop. The property is being updated with consistent diligent effort. Much is not made of efforts to bring the facility into the twenty first century; we all expect the toilets to flush. And flush they do, better than ever with investments in state of the art septic systems that produce the same effluent delivered to golf courses and roadway medians in purple pipes.
Suffering through growth and change is often a messy process and usually the death knell for a business. Sawmill turned that around. Crowds continue to grow and most weekends cabins and RV sites are sold out. Sawmill is a seventeen-year-old property that has seen little investment over that time. Neglect has left the infrastructure in disrepair. Though a great deal has been done in the past several years, much remains to be done. The laundry room is a sore point for both residents and guests as housekeeping usurps it several days each week, machines are regularly out of order and the laundry room itself is in a state of general disrepair. Shower rooms need updating. Both projects are on the drawing board for 2015. Roads have been improved and cabins have been renovated. Blade is now a smoke free area with plans
The Bunk House offers a bedroom with private bath, bedrooms with shared baths and common sleeping areas. It’s already a huge hit with guests who arrive as strangers and quickly become friends.
to convert it to a community room open daily for refuge from bad weather with dedicated Wi-Fi, furnishings including seating and pool table and several flat screen monitors. A new dog park is slated for completion in the second quarter of 2015, a gift from Sawmill residents. Now that same sex marriage is legal in Florida Sawmill offers complete wedding packages including a ceremony in the new lakeside gazebo, flowers, accommodations, catering and all out fun. Another new addition to Sawmill is the Bunk House. The Bunk House offers a bedroom with private bath, bedrooms with shared baths and common sleeping areas. It’s already a huge hit with guests who arrive as strangers and quickly become friends. A new conference room furnished to accommodate up to twelve is now available. Lucy’s is the reception desk and general store. The poolside bar, Splash, offers food service serving a variety of well prepared and reasonably priced entrees and appetizers, and though smoking is still tolerated umbrella tables outside offer respite. Sawmill’s nightclub, Woody’s, is open Thursday through Sunday with live DJ on Friday and Saturday nights; smoking is still tolerated inside Woody’s. A community campfire burns weekend nights in the
Courtyard and is often the center of after hours gatherings. Nature trails wander the wooded area near Ricky Lake. Sawmill has taken the first steps to creating a smoke free indoor environment, though momentum to make it permanent appears timid. As Sawmill moves into new group markets there is pressure to make all public facilities at Sawmill smoke free. Though licensed as clothing optional, nudity is currently limited to the pool area, Thursdays, and posted Bare As You Dare theme weekends. Management is discussing widening the nudity policy to include more, perhaps all, days. As Sawmill continues to strive for a customer first experience, management knows the most difficult challenges are to keep the experience fresh, develop new ideas, and create new reasons to visit Sawmill. One such effort is a recent reunion weekend reintroducing old members to the new Sawmill. Changes occur daily and if you haven’t been to Sawmill, or haven’t been in a while, you will be pleasantly surprised. Sawmill is a member of Friends With Benefits, a community of gay campgrounds that allows a camper with a valid membership at another FWB campground to try out Sawmill with a half price membership in their first year.
Located about an hour from both Tampa and Orlando, Sawmill is easily accessible for locals and visitors alike. soflagaynews //

Southern Comfort is open for access all hours every day. All important infrastructures are new, all of it being replaced less than six years ago. Southern Comfort is a non-clothing optional gay friendly straight accommodating roadside campground. Located on US Highway 19 near Cross City, FL. Gainesville is approximately an hour to the east. Owners are Jim and Vaughn. The leaning gray wood gate opens as we roll to a stop. John, known as the bear, and Maddi stand to the side as we slow and stop. Courtesy requires we greet both, gab a few moments then head over to the assigned site. It becomes readily apparent our arrival is the big event of the day. Maddi and John are both work campers who are genuinely pleased at our arrival and make every effort to be gracious informative hosts. Located alongside US19 with a fence
between the roadway and sites the small property is open and exposed to view of all traveling by who happen or choose to look. A few trees dot the space, mostly along the perimeter, leaving the forty some full hookup campsites in the center exposed to full sun. Full sun on my visit is welcome as the nighttime temperature dropped to 37F. Road noise from the highway is consistent, though not much to be done about that with the proximity to US Route 19. The Cruise Bar is a beer and wine bar open summers. John, the onsite work camper says Southern Comfort is too far north for snowbirds making summer the primary season. Pool table, grand piano and full sound system furnish the Cruise Bar. Outside is an outdoor beer garden between the Cruise Bar and laundry room. The laundry is a clean coin op laundry in good repair.
A pool is open though unheated. Jim and Vaughn are justly proud of their state of the art pool and filtration system. Tanks hold as much water as the pool and flow through complete treatment before reentering the pool for use. A small wire fence enclosure with some chaises and chairs randomly placed fill out the small space just outside the Cruise Bar. Campsites are large open spaces situated down the middle of the property. RV sites include 50amp electric service, water and sewer hookups and surprisingly also cable TV; though we were informed that the cable company is going out of business. Along the fences, particularly the back fence, are shaded areas offering privacy against the fence and under the trees though none appear developed into campsites. Likely we are the only transient camper, though our visit is on a Monday in February. Most permanent rigs are old and look it. Of the dozen or so units on site most look
like they will never be moved again. Campfires are OK throughout the property. Southern Comfort is open for access all hours every day. All important infrastructures are new, all of it being replaced less than six years ago. A real rarity in campgrounds of any ilk, electrical power is individual dedicated to the main, which eliminates surges. The Tool Shed in a treed distant corner is the playroom open weekends. Tent sites are located along the fence and rustic, though a camp kitchen is coming this summer. Wi-Fi is new, and solid, also a real rarity in any campground. Southern Comfort offers three rental RVs with two more coming in summer of 2015. Rates for rentals range from $79/ night. RV sites rent for $35/ night. New cabins are slated for summer 2015 at $45/ night. Southern Comfort is not a member of FWB, though is aware of the organization and interested in looking into membership.
Located an hour west of Gainesville, Southern Comfort is easily accessible for the college community. 36

Gather Up the Tent, Cooler and Grill As a personal favorite of gay campgrounds everywhere it’s impossible to complete this piece without mention of Jones Pond. Located in rural Western New York an hour southwest of Rochester and an hour southeast of Buffalo, picturesque Angelica is a nearby community. Though not in Florida, Jones Pond sets the standard for every gay campground I have visited. Jones Pond is a premier property and fosters a strong sense of gay community in its seasonal campers; the campground is open May through September. Each block of seasonal campers hosts a block party in the summer, raising money for donation to local organizations. These events also serve to inculcate newcomers into the embracing culture. Being a stranger and being recognized serves the dual purpose of feeling included and wanting to come back for more. Many businesses of all kinds could learn from this simple tactic. The park is a beautiful property from the moment of arrival at the store to register. Acres of lawn fall away to a line of stately pines that define the clothing optional demarcation line. Past the pines the land slopes gently, until Cardiac
Hill, and is populated here and there with seasonal camps set on huge lots. Some lots are in full sun, some under the shade of an area of pines, some up a sloping reach almost surrounded by marsh. Below Cardiac Hill camps are set along a bold creek that flows through a viaduct serving as a bridge carrying the road up the far hillside. Set among the hardwoods of the hillside are camps carved out of the forest. Nature trails surround the hillside camps wandering from the bridge to an open sunny meadow at the top of the Fruit Loop. Jones Pond features early season specials. Park wide Wi-Fi is coming in three stages, the first stage to be completed this year. The huge pool is now heated with new pool heaters. The Barn, the social center of Jones Pond, got new sound equipment for the 2015 season opening. On the list for completion this summer is a complete remodeling of Fluff and Fold, the laundry room, and a new camper kitchen for tenters including a microwave and dishwashing station. An entry gate now stands sentinel keeping the curious and gawkers from wandering the park. Owners Bryan and Matt were instrumental along with Freedom
Valley, Ohio, and Riverside, ON Canada, in that notion. For most gay campers it’s about beginning Friends With Benefits. FWB is an community; new friends, old friends and organization of gay campgrounds whose permanent friends. It’s about meeting new members offer half price memberships to people, exchanging ideas about campers campers who own a valid membership with and camping, inviting friends to a campfire another FWB member. and having a few cocktails under the moon If you haven’t experienced gay camping and stars. fter being open a number of years some places slack off, but Max’s Grille in Boca Raton’s Mizner Park manages to keep things fresh heading into its 25th year. The menu elevates traditional American favorites with a uniquely fresh and artistic take on modern American bistro fare at reasonable prices. Many of the dishes are grilled over mesquite and served with light sauces and reductions, emphasizing clean flavors, inventive combinations and the use of local products. The wine list is one to explore and it is easy to do so since the restaurant offers three different pour sizes of the wines available by the glass. Appetizers range in price from soups at $7 to flatbreads, chicken wings, calamari and its signature app, duck spring rolls. We both started our meal with soup; a rich, smoky black bean topped with a dollop of poblano sour cream and a crisp and refreshing watermelon gazpacho. The watermelon added just the right amount of sweetness to the perfectly spiced dish. Since I was dining with my non-meat eating husband, we passed on the spring rolls (I’ll get them next time) and split the buttery soft, supremely fresh and expertly sliced tuna tartar served over a refreshing Asian slaw with a yuzu ponzu sauce. We also ordered the roasted Brussels sprouts, but were barely able to put a dent into the huge mound of nutty veggies tossed with shiitake mushrooms,

asiago aioli, truffle oil and balsamic dressing. Not only would this dish win over anyone who thinks they don’t like this vegetable, the portion was enough for a meal. In fact, it served as lunch for both of us the next day. Thank goodness we left room for the entrees because they were magnificent. Since I rarely eat beef at home, I splurged on the Akaushi flat iron. The Wagyu beef arrived perfectly seared with just the right char on the grill marks done to a perfect medium rare. I hadn’t planned on doing more than tasting the Parmesan crusted steak fries, but they proved addictive. A small salad of arugula and tomatoes, tossed in truffle aioli, provided a nice break from the richness of the meat and potatoes. My husband’s crab crusted mahimahi arrived perfectly cooked with a crust of crab at least an inch thick. Lyonnaise potatoes with leeks, braised greens and red pepper supported the star ingredient. We dined early, on our way to a movie screening, and discovered that we qualified for Max’s “Three Course Experience”. We weren’t even aware of the restaurant’s early bird special; order an entrée between 5-6 p.m. and you get a complimentary bottle of house wine (with the purchase of two dinners) or $5 house wine or house cocktails for individual diners. The meal also includes a select appetizer (our soups counted) and smaller portions of select desserts. If we had ordered full-sized desserts, we wouldn’t have been able to finish them so I was grateful for the smaller portions. My husband’s Key lime pie was a perfectly acceptable example of the dessert. However, the warm flourless chocolate cake, was the sole disappointment of the evening. Not only wasn’t it warm; it was dry and tasteless. It wasn’t enough to ruin the memory of the wonderful meal that preceded it, though.

a&e theater Drag Race Winner Violet Chachki
To Perform at The Manor David-Elijah Nahmod
Get up close and personal with season 7 Drag Race winner Violet Chachki, who will perform songs from her newly released album Gagged at The Manor on Saturday, July 25. Gagged will be available through iTunes. Vanguard, the album's first single, is now available for viewing on You Tube. In the video, Chachki is seen in vintage 1940s drag as she's gay bashed in a cafeteria. She fights back, knocking her attackers to the ground. As the video progresses, Chachki is seen in a variety of bondage and fetish inspired undergarments. Topless in some of the shots, she has female breasts in some shots, a man's chest in others. The video's fighting back theme may have been taken from Chachki's own life. "Everyone's been bullied," she told SFGN. "Homophobia, transphobia, being a drag queen." Chachki presents herself as all of these things. "I can be transgessive," she said. "They kinda blend together for me." Chachki, who's birth name is Jason Dardo, cites Bettie Page, a 1950s BDSM pin-up queen, as among her primary influences. "Fetish, leather and drag are very visual," Chachki said. "When I first started doing drag I took a lot of visual inspiration from Bettie. She has a certain mystery, an allure. At the height of her career she vanished and became a Born Again Christian. She never gave interviews--she wanted to preserve her image. I respect that."
Photo: Facebook.
Chachki explained what it is about fetish that attracts and inspires her. "It's the severity of it," she said. "It's dramatic. I like that its an extreme form of glamour and sexuality. That appeals to me." She also has in interest in fetish as a lifestyle. "It's giving your strength to someone else," she explained. "It's a learning experience. It lets you step out of your comfort zone in a safe way." RuPaul is another of the rising young star's influences. "She's self-made," Chachki said of the Drag Race host. "To see where she came from, and how she got here is inspiring. Its amazing to be around her." Like RuPaul, Chachki hails from Atlanta. "I've come full circle," she said. "I see myself in her. I see her in me." She also expressed her joy at winning Drag Race. "It's the only validation I've looked for," she said. "To be accepted by your community, and to be a figurehead is a lot of pressure. But its super-gratifying and rewarding." She described her music as "dark and industrial". "Its club music," she said. "Its what I would listen to with a glass of wine--I'm influenced by the music I listened to." Chachki reports that club remixes of her songs are being worked on and that she's excited about coming to Florida. "I'm super excited to be reigning queen," she said. "And happy to come to Wilton Manors. It's a great place to vacation."
Doors will open at 11pm for Chachki's July 25th show at The Manor. The first 100 patrons in line by 11pm will get to meet and greet with the star.

Tony Winner Brings Act To South Beach J.W. Arnold

Actor and recording artist Levi Kreis makes his South Florida debut at the Cabaret South Beach on July 31.
Lightning never strikes twice in the same place. Or does it? Just ask actor and recording artist Levi Kreis, who will be making his regional debut on July 31 at the Cabaret South Beach. “But nobody sees the 15 years of work that takes place before the lightning strikes,” he insisted, noting the same is true for many artists—especially his award-winning friends from Los Angeles—who seem to burst onto the entertainment scene. “It’s been a process to celebrate.” Kreis grew up in a small town near Oak Ridge, Tenn. He was the little boy who would pound out tunes on the piano as soon as he heard them and was composing his own songs by 12. He knew he was gay at an early age, but wanted to be a Christian musical artist and fit in, a period he called “his biggest torture.” Kreis even secretly underwent conversion therapy and had “hands laid on me more times than I can count.” Eventually, he accepted “the breath of God is in each of us to be who we are.” Kreis eventually left Tennessee and headed to L.A., where he landed a lead role in an indie film as Matthew McConaghey’s brother. He was then cast in a musical greenlit for Broadway when the 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred. “Nobody wanted to touch it,” Kreis recalled, “and major record labels didn’t know what to do with me as an openly gay man.” He got his first break in 2004 when his producer suggested him for a challenge on “The Apprentice.” The competitors would develop a marketing plan for him. Unfortunately, he was forced to sign a sixmonth confidentiality agreement until the
episode would air, even if that seven minutes could potentially change his life. “I had $200 and was living in Hoboken, New Jersey. I spent it recording 10 of my songs that would become my debut album, a friend put together a website and we just waited for the episode to air,” he said. “I just hoped enough people would see the episode. Well, a thousand orders came through, the next night, another thousand, and another thousand.” Other big breaks came when he was cast in the touring company of “Rent” and later, as Jerry Lee Lewis in the Broadway smash, “Million Dollar Quartet.” Kreis would leave Radio City Music Hall with a Tony Award in his hand. Not long afterwards, one of his songs would be included in the soundtrack for the season 2 finale of the CW Network series, “The Vampire Diaries,” introducing his music to yet another new audience. His music is also featured on the AMC series, “Sons of Anarchy.” “It’s a testament to what happens when we let go of others’ expectations,” he said adamantly, “a process to celebrate.” Honesty is a theme Kreis sticks to in everything he does. Like so many entertainers, he struggled with addiction and has been sober for six years, but he embraces the freedom and self-love recovery has offered. Intimacy and honesty also guide his cabaret show. There is no set list, no rules, just Kreis on the stage with a piano. “It’s a very intimate, raw, vulnerable look at my life and career,” Kreis said. He likes to share the stories about his songs, how he got his start on stage, the struggles and yes, those times when lightning struck, too.

Plug Your Bum With The Donald
Hunter Houston
Donald Trump’s Presidential campaign appears to be taking on water following his offensive comments about former prisoner of war John McCain. Perhaps Trump needs a device to plug the leak. Porn Pulse has found the perfect toy. Introducing, the Donald Trump Butt Plug. Designed by Mexican artist Fernando Sosa, who immigrated to Florida at the age of 11, the Donald Trump Butt Plug is bound to fill that gap in a bold style only worthy of the billionaire businessman himself. Sosa tells the website, DangerousMinds.net, that he created the Donald Trump Butt Plug in response to the Republican politician’s remarks that Mexicans bring crime and drugs into the United States and many are rapists. “(Trump) decided to use Latinos as a scapegoat and blame us for everything that is ailing America,” Sosa said. “My making you into a butt plug is Freedom of Speech. Welcome to America Mother Fucker!!” This isn’t the first time Sosa has modeled a butt plug after a political figure. He has
also designed butt plugs resembling Russian President Vladimir Putin, Texas Senator Ted Cruz and “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson. You can follow Sosa on Twitter at @ politicalsculpt.
The Donald Trump Butt Plug retails for $27.99 minus shipping, handling and lubing fees. It is available for purchase on the website ShapeWays.com.
