Op-ED
There's a crosswalk less than 200 ft away? Are we that impatient that we can't walk another 200 ft? If we were looking for optimal places to put additional crosswalks, there is a giant stretch of road between 6th and 9th ave with no way to get across. And do we need to hamper down the entire drive to 2 lanes and create Las Olas style traffic jam? It is nice to visit down there, but getting from one block to the next is a nightmare, and the fact that their road is only two lanes has done nothing to prevent additional car accidents with pedestrians.
Martin Smith –
They need to start to ticket the damn jaywalkers!! In California you would NEVER jaywalk because they ticket you. WPD needs to start doing the same thing. People drinking and running across the road....what the hell?!
Bill Cox –
The goal sounds great and I would love to see the Drive become more pedestrian friendly. But my first question becomes what happens to the traffic? I've seen too many of these projects address one problem only to create a bigger problem. If you turn the Drive into a bottleneck, which is what will happen if you close half the lanes, where will the traffic go? Will you create a traffic problem somewhere else? Or will you end up with a solid, bumper-to-bumper line of pissed off drivers still causing problems on the Drive? I see your plans to make things better for the pedestrians, but you don't address the traffic itself.

Phoenix Lopez Harman – What's it going to take for my fellow LGBT family to learn that these hookup sites can literally be your death sentence. Unfortunately, I think some people are so desperate, that they see someone really attractive, or the stats are too good to pass up and they end up taking the deadly risk. People have got to realize that people in this world cannot be trusted, as much as you'd like to. There are people that will lure you, who have no intent on hooking up with you, but to kill you just because you're LGBT. C'mon people, wake up!

highlight Local Men’s Group Considers Palm Springs for Next Convention John McDonald Following its much surprised Orlando celebration involving acting legend Ed Asner, A Celebration of Friends is eyeing a move to California for its next gathering. Founder and President of the organization, Tom Pence, said the mainstreaming of gay life is opening new doors. Pence said Asner’s participation at the recent gathering in Orlando illustrates how far the organization has come. “I thought he was untouchable,” Pence said. “It was a true honor to have Mr. Asner speak to the men.” Asner, 85, did not discuss his sexuality, but did have a few choice words for Fox News commentator Sean Hannity, calling the conservative radio host a “depraved little choir boy.” The question and answer segment with Asner was attended by well over 300 people at the Doubletree By Hilton SeaWorld Orlando. The weeklong festivities marked 14 years of existence for A Celebration of Friends, a group Pence (aka Tomcat) launched in New Orleans as a vehicle to bring mature gay men and their admirers together in a safe and supportive setting. In Orlando, attendees were treated to film screenings of movies starring Asner as well as

informative sessions regarding healthcare and changes to Medicare programs. HIV testing stations were also available. Asner’s answers to questions from audience members had attendees talking all through the evening poolside at the Doubletree. When asked about his homophobic portrayal of a political campaign donor on CBS’ “The Good Wife,” Asner said he modeled the performance off Las Vegas Casino owner Sheldon Adelson. “The coming battle,” Asner warned. “is Orthodoxy.” Meanwhile, Pence said A Celebration of Friends is currently polling membership as to who should headline next year’s event and where it should be held. Several members are pushing for Palm Springs, Calif as a host city. Wayne Patterson, past President of Primetimers of the Desert, said Palm Springs is an ideal destination for gay men of distinction. “It’s a majority gay city and very friendly,” Patterson said.

Greg Louganis’ Edge Media
‘Back on Board’ Photos: Facebook.
Four-time Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis is universally recognized as the greatest diver ever, but his greatest impact may ultimately come from being one of the first openly gay athletes in America. The intimate documentary "Back On Board: Greg Louganis" looks at the public triumphs and private struggles of this LGBT trailblazer. It debuted Tuesday, August 4 exclusively on HBO. "Back On Board: Greg Louganis" traces his story from a difficult childhood, through his Olympic conquests, to a transformative postOlympic life, outlining the discrimination and other obstacles he has faced throughout his remarkable journey. "Greg Louganis is one of the most decorated and celebrated Olympians of any generation, and we are delighted to share his story -- both personal and athletic -- with the acquisition of this documentary," says Ken Hershman, president, HBO Sports. "Greg allowed the filmmakers unrestricted access to his life story and viewers will benefit from this deeply personal portrait and gain a terrific perspective on his complicated and Sweeney. diving star in 1984. At the Summer Games in Los Angeles, Louganis won gold medals in the 10M Platform and 3M Springboard events. Four years later in Seoul, he became the only male diver in history to win those events in back-to-back Olympic Games. In one of the most notable moments of his storied career, Louganis suffered a cut on his head when he hit the diving board during a preliminary round of the Seoul Games, but went on to win his gold medals days later. Though the American public originally lauded Louganis for his competitive spirit, it was not known at the time that he had tested positive for HIV six months earlier. When Louganis later announced that he was HIVpositive, it sparked outrage over his original non-disclosure of the virus and sparked a nationwide conversation about HIV/AIDS and sports. Greg Louganis announced to the world that he was gay in the mid-1990s, but it was a not a well-kept secret in the diving world before that. During his dominance in the 1980s, many sponsors knew of his sexual orientation, which limited his marketability -- just one example of the homophobia and hateful rhetoric that followed him long before and after his official announcement that he was gay.

Ending a prolonged absence from the diving world, Louganis has returned to mentor the next generation of American divers. "Back On Board: Greg Louganis" offers unprecedented access to the Olympian as he struggles with financial security and reunites with the sport that he once dominated, but did not feel accepted in. The film examines the good times and bad times, including the choices, relationships and missed opportunities Louganis has experienced throughout his career as a sports pioneer. "Back On Board: Greg Louganis" has gained critical acclaim at prestigious film festivals around the United States. It won the audience award at the Outfest Los Angeles Film Festival and the Connecticut LGBT Film Festival, and was named best documentary feature film at the Annapolis Film Festival, in addition to capturing the award for best editing at the Salem Film Festival. The Los Angeles Examiner called the film "A perfect 10," and "a master class in documentary filmmaking," while the Hollywood Reporter wrote, "Anyone who doubts that documentaries can have the dramatic and emotional power of the best narrative films should see the Greg Louganis doc 'Back on Board'," describing it as a "rich, satisfying story, skillfully told."

an Charged in Trans Woman's Slaying in Tampa
(AP) Authorities in Florida say a man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a transgender woman. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office reported in a news release that 18-year-old Keith Lamayne Gaillard is being held on a first-degree murder charge in the death of 25-year-old India Clarke. Clarke's body was found July 21 in a Tampa park, and an autopsy later determined that she had been shot in the head and an arm. Officials say Gaillard's DNA was found under Clarke's fingernails. Detectives also reported finding a condom with Gaillard's DNA inside Clarke's car, which was found nearby. Gaillard is being held on $275,000 bail. He turned himself in Wednesday morning after a warrant was issued. It is unclear whether Gaillard has retained an attorney.

ussian Police Detain Several Gay Activists
(AP) ST. PETERSBURG, Russia -- Police in St. Petersburg on Sunday detained several gay activists who have held pickets in defense of gay rights on a Russian military holiday. Yuri Gavrikov, the leader of a gay rights group, was quickly rounded up by police as he left his home to hold a one-man picket in front of the Hermitage Museum. Police accused him of cursing on the street, which he denied. Gavrikov was held at a police station pending a court hearing. Veterans of Russian Airborne Forces confronted several other gay activists, who held individual pickets near the Hermitage, and tore up their posters. Police quickly took the gay activists away. Paratroopers gathered in many Russian cities to mark the Airborne Forces Day on Sunday. Russia has been widely criticized for infringement on gay rights following the passage of a law that prohibits vaguely defined "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations" to minors.

enegalese Journalist Gets Six Months for Homosexuality
(AP) A well-known Senegalese journalist was sentenced Friday to six months in prison for acts of homosexuality, which is illegal in this West African country. Tamsir Jupiter Ndiaye, who had previous homosexuality convictions, was arrested in June after a young man accused him of attempted rape. Chased by an angry mob, he took refuge in a Dakar police station. The magazine columnist was sentenced in 2012 to 4 years in prison for acts of homosexuality, illegal possession of arms and battery. The sentence was later reduced to 2 years and he was paroled in 2013. Homosexual acts are illegal in Senegal and punishable by up to five years prison and fines of up to $2,500. A Human Rights Watch report from 2010 reported widespread abuse of gay men, including torture and ill-treatment, particularly by police. Homosexuality is a criminal offense in more than two-thirds of African countries.

udge Deems Gay Couple as Spouses after One Partner's Death
(AP) A judge has recognized a 2001 same-sex union as a common-law marriage in Pennsylvania even though one partner died before gay marriage became legal. Sabrina Maurer's (MOW'-ers) case involves her fight over death benefits and inheritance taxes following the 2013 death of Kim Underwood. Bucks County Judge C. Theodore Fritsch Jr. says the women retroactively qualify as common-law spouses because of their 2001 church union. Underwood died a year before a federal judge ordered Pennsylvania to conduct same-sex marriages and recognize those performed earlier. Fritsch's ruling Wednesday appears to extend that decision to include earlier common-law unions, at least in Bucks County. Family lawyer Helen Casale (KUH'-sal) says the ruling is creating plenty of buzz in the legal community as gay clients pursue death benefits, divorce settlements and other claims.

ndiana Convention's CEO Calls for Broader LGBT Protections

(AP) A Kansas Department of Children and Families official said Friday that the state will continue to allow qualified single adults to serve as foster parents for abused and neglected children, but she said her agency isn't ready to say whether it will allow married same-sex couples to do so. The department has faced questions about its plans because it said earlier this month that it was conducting a broad review of foster care policies. Douglas County District Judge Peggy Carr Kittel wrote a regional DCF official, asking whether it planned to limit foster parenting to only married couples and how such a move would apply to same-sex couples, given the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage across the nation. Theresa Freed, a spokeswoman for the child welfare agency, told The Associated Press that department officials "haven't changed any
foster care licensing policies." The department did not issue a public statement. "Single adults will not be excluded from being foster care parents," Freed said. "That was never being considered." Before the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Kansas banned same-sex marriage and did not recognize such marriages from other states. Brownback has been a vocal supporter of the state's ban. But the state allowed gays and lesbians to serve as foster parents, as individuals. The department began its review of foster care policies after Republican Gov. Sam Brownback this month transferred the licensing of foster homes to it from the Department of Health and Environment. DCF already had administered placements and services for foster children through two private contractors.
(AP) The CEO of a massive gamers' convention that threatened to leave Indiana earlier this year over a divisive religious objections law said Thursday that organizers are "shopping the show" to other cities and could relocate if lawmakers don't expand protections for gays and lesbians. Cities across the U.S. have courted convention organizers since Republican Gov. Mike Pence signed the initial bill in March, provoking national uproar from critics who believed it would sanction discrimination against gay people. Backlash prompted lawmakers to make changes forbidding discrimination, but they stopped short of extending civil rights protections to the LGBT community, as some cities - including Indianapolis- have done. Adrian Swartout, the CEO of Gen Con, told The Associated Press Thursday on the convention's opening day that a competitive

offer from a state that grants gays and lesbians that status could be a "catalyst" pushing the event to relocate when its contract expires in 2020. Chicago has shown interest and Orlando also is a possibility, she said. "If we have opportunity to be in places that have state protections, that might make the deal," Swartout said. "This is important to us." Pence opposes proposals to give LGBT people statewide civil rights protections. When recently asked about the possibility of Gen Con leaving over LGBT rights, Pence refused to answer. Gen Con's departure could mean a significant drop in revenue. The convention draws thousands of costumed damsels, dungeon masters and roll-play game aficionados to Indianapolis each year. Last year, more than 56,000 people visited, bringing in an estimated $67 million in revenue.

Stabbings at Jerusalem Pride and Fires on the West Bank
Israeli Prime Minister Vows 'Zero Tolerance' for Jewish Extremists (AP) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his government will have "zero tolerance" for Jewish extremists. At his weekly Cabinet meeting Sunday, Netanyahu said Israel was united against "the criminals among our people" following a pair of attacks that shocked the country. On Friday, suspected Jewish extremists set fire to a Palestinian home in the West Bank and burned a
toddler to death. On Thursday, an ultra-Orthodox Jew stabbed revelers at a Gay Pride parade in Jerusalem. Thousands of Israelis took to the streets over the weekend to protest the attacks and warn against a radicalized and violent fringe growing from within the country's religious community. Netanyahu says Israel is determined to fight "hate, fanaticism and terrorism from whatever side."

an Stabs Several People Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade

(AP) An Ultra-Orthodox Jewish man lunged into a group of revelers at Jerusalem's annual gay pride parade and stabbed six people Thursday evening as they marched in the holy city, Israeli police and witnesses said. The man had recently been released from prison after serving a sentence for stabbing several people at a gay pride parade in 2005, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said. Samri said the attacker, Yishai Schlissel, was arrested. Eli Bin of Israel's emergency service said six young people were wounded in the attack, two of them seriously. Witnesses told Channel 2 TV that an Ultra-Orthodox man rushed the marchers and stabbed multiple people before Israeli police jumped on him and arrested him. Yishai Avior told the station that he heard screaming and saw three people on the ground bleeding. "People ran in every direction to take cover. Where I was standing there were three people on the ground bleeding. There was immense panic and shock," he said. Thursday's attacker carried out a similar attack that wounded several people at a gay pride parade in Jerusalem a decade ago. Media reported he hid in a nearby supermarket and jumped out to attack the march when it passed. Jerusalem police spokesman Asi Ahroni said there was a "massive presence" of police securing the parade but "unfortunately the man managed to pull out a knife and attack." The parade continued after the wounded were taken to a hospital, with protesters chanting "end the violence."

fter Jerusalem Pride Stabbing, Extremists Burn Palestinian Child
(AP) Suspected Jewish assailants set fire to a West Bank home on Friday and burned a sleeping Palestinian toddler to death in an attack that drew Palestinian rage and widespread Israeli condemnation. The attack, which threatens to set off another violent escalation, shines a light on the growing lawlessness of extremist Jewish settlers that Israel is either unable or unwilling to contain. "This is a direct consequence of decades of impunity given by the Israeli government to settler terrorism," said Palestinian official Saeb Erekat. "This is the consequence of a culture of hate funded and incentivized by the Israeli government and the impunity granted by the international community." Friday's deadly attack comes as part of a larger trend of Jewish radicalization - one day after an anti-gay ultra-Orthodox extremist stabbed revelers at Jerusalem's Gay Pride Parade and two days after Israeli authorities indicted two young Jewish activists for an arson attack on a famous Holy Land church. All have been strongly condemned across the Israeli political spectrum, though the recent spate of attacks has raised fears that a radicalized and violent ultraconservative fringe is growing from within the country's hard-line nationalreligious camp. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called the attack a "war crime" and said the Palestinians would present it to the International Criminal Court as part of their case against Israel. The extremist attacks, which most recently struck a famous church in northern Israel, have rarely caused fatal injuries, which made Friday's incident, in which 18-month-old Ali Dawabsheh was killed and his parents and 4-year-old brother critically wounded, all the more worrying.
Orders Jerusalem Gay Pride Court Attacker Remain in Custody
(AP) An anti-gay ultra-Orthodox extremist suspected of stabbing revelers at Jerusalem's Gay Pride Parade appeared in court on Friday and the judge ordered that he remain in custody. The suspected attacker, Yishai Schlissel, was arrested at the pride parade the previous day, after he brandished a knife and stabbed six people. The court extended his arrest by 12 days as the investigation against him continues, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said. Schlissel was convicted of a similar attack that wounded

several people at a gay pride parade in Jerusalem in 2005. Schlissel had been released from prison just three weeks ago after serving his sentence. Israeli hospital officials said Friday that a 16-year-old girl remained in critical condition after the attack, with wounds to her chest and shoulder. Three others are in hospital but their conditions are not life threatening, while the remaining two have been discharged, hospital officials said. The Gay Pride Parade was proceeding as planned with party music, Israeli flags and rainbow-clad marchers wending their way through central Jerusalem's barricaded streets, under a heavy police presence, when the attacker entered the throng of people. Within seconds he raised a knife and began stabbing people in the back. Police pounced on him and arrested him. The crowd's carefree cheers suddenly gave way to screams. Condemnations poured in against the attack, including from ultra-Orthodox leaders.

irl Wounded in Attack on Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade Dies
(AP) An Israeli hospital spokeswoman says a teenage girl stabbed by an anti-gay extremist in last week's attack on Jerusalem's gay pride parade has died. Hadar Elboim of Hadassah hospital said the 16-year-old succumbed to her wounds Sunday and that her organs will be donated. The girl, identified as Shira Banki, was among six people wounded Thursday by an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man who had carried out a similar attack on a gay pride parade in 2005. He had been released from prison just three weeks earlier and had angrily spoken out against the parade after his release. Jerusalem, known for its rich religious history and tradition, holds a modest parade annually in contrast to the large parade in nearby liberal Tel Aviv, which drew over 100,000 people this year.

x-Navy SEAL Alleges Anti-Gay Bullying By CIA Workers
Photo: Facebook.
A former Navy SEAL has filed an internal complaint alleging the CIA bullied him for being gay during a work assignment in June in Afghanistan. Brett Jones said he filed the complaint last week against the federal agency, saying he was forced to endure homophobic slurs and other inappropriate comments on June 11 in Afghanistan as a group of contractors and civil servants in the CIA's Global Response Staff watched news of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized samesex marriage. He also said he was abandoned and forced to walk in 120-degree temperatures without water while he worked there as a CIA contractor. Jones, the author of "Pride: The Story of the First Openly Gay Navy SEAL," said he feared for his safety and returned home early from Afghanistan. He told his story to
F
ABC and the San Diego Union-Tribune. Jones told the AP that the CIA had contacted him and said they are investigating the complaint. Jones said that during his time working in Afghanistan that people he was working with called him an anti-gay name, and he said they were defensive when he confronted them about it. Jones alleged in the complaint that his team later ditched him in 120-degree temperatures without water, making him walk part way back to their compound before they stopped to give him a ride. He said though the agency has come a long way in offering programs to accept gay people, there is still a lot of anti-gay sentiment among members of the special operations and intelligence communities. "It's crazy that it still exists. But it does. It really does," he said.
eds Release Updated Strategy Against AIDS in America
Photo: Facebook.
(AP) U.S. health officials have updated their strategic plan for fighting AIDS, setting new goals for reducing infections and deaths. The new document "seizes on the rapid shifts in science as we've learned more about this disease," said President Barack Obama, in a statement. The plan unveiled Thursday updates one issued five years ago. Developments since then include new diagnostic tests, a daily pill for infection prevention and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act increasing the number of people with health insurance. However, new infections with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, have stayed about the same, at around 50,000 a year. Diagnosed infections have dropped in women and heterosexuals, but climbed in gay and bisexual men. The updated document adds some new goals for 2020, like reducing the death rate among HIV-diagnosed people by at least one-
third, and increasing the percentage who control their infection though medication. It also reports on progress toward the goals that had been set for 2015. Health statistics for this year are not compiled yet. But a look at 2012 and 2013 data suggests slight progress in some categories, like the proportion of people with HIV who were linked to specialized medical care within one month of diagnosis - from 70 percent to nearly 73 percent. But by some measures, the situation got worse. The proportion of people with diagnosed HIV who are homeless rose slightly from 2000 to 2012, to more than 8 percent. Since AIDS was first identified more than 30 years ago, medicines have changed it from a death sentence to a chronic threat. About 1.2 million Americans were living with HIV in 2012, the most recent year for which that statistic is available. soflagaynews //

(EDGE) Caleb Anthony and Kordale Lewis, who have been dubbed Instagram's hottest gay couple, have ended their relationship. People magazine reports Anthony, 27, posted a letter to Instagram to the couple's 187,000 followers to announce that he and Lewis, 26, are "no longer together." The couple, who reside in Atlanta, have two daughters and a son between the ages of six and eight, and blew up social media last year when a photo of the adorable family showing their morning hair routine with their daughters went viral. "Being fathers is getting our daughters up at 5:30 a.m., making breakfast, getting them dressed for school and putting them on the bus by 6:30," the caption reads. People notes the split may come to a surprise to their fans as the couple appeared to be happy when they starred in a two-minute video for Nikon's "I Am Generation Image" campaign back in January.

(SFGN) Marvel announced that their Greek demi-god based hero, Hercules will debut in his own feature series this November. But Editor in Chief Axel Alonso said the character, who has previously had flings with heroes and heroines in the Marvel universe including Northstar, Wolverine, Snowbird and Black Widow, will be heterosexual in the new series. “Hercules and James Howlett’s relationship in X-Treme X-Men took place in a unique alternate universe, similar to how Colossus was gay in the Ultimate Universe, but is straight in the [main Marvel Universe]. Same goes for Hercules here,” said Alonso in an interview with Comic Book Resources. (http://bit.ly/1M13wT2) The announcement comes as a disappointment to LGBT comic fans who had been hoping to see more in diversity from the comic book icons. Marvel had started making some diversity headway after making hero Iceman gay, and turning Thor into a woman for an upcoming series.

rans Body Builder 'Hesitant' To Compete Female
(EDGE) World champion bodybuilder Jane Marie Kroczaleski came out as a transgender woman this week but spoke with TMZ Sports Thursday and said she is still deciding whether or not she'll continue to compete as a man or a woman. The athlete said she is worried about any backlash she may receive when it comes to her bodybuilding. "I'm hesitant because I'm afraid it would do more harm than good," she said. "I'm afraid it's a no-win situation because if I win people will say it's not fair, it's cheating and I'm afraid that it would stir up a lot of people protesting against transgender athletes and I would never want to do anything to harm the transgender community." On her Instagram, Kroczaleski calls herself a "transgender/genderfluid Alpha male/girly girl Lesbian in a male body.”

On the Republican front Donald Trump is still sucking up most of the oxygen, while most of the bottom tier candidates have been desperately trying to make the cut for the first debate, hosted by Fox News on August 6. Only 10 of the 17 candidates will be included. For the last week New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry were all locked in a threeway tie for the last two spots. It was announced on Tuesday that Perry missed the boat. The other 8 candidates that made the cut include: billionaire businessman Donald Trump; former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush; Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker; Florida Sen. Marco Rubio; Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul; Texas Sen. Ted Cruz; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee; and pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson. The other candidates include former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, former New York Gov. George Pataki, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham and former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore. Fox News has agreed to give each of them a chance to speak before the debate. According to Quinnipiac University national poll released last Thursday Trump leads the pack with 20 percent with Walker at 13 percent and Bush at 10 percent. No other Republican candidate got more than 6 percent, while 12 percent are still undecided. Because of Trump’s standing in the polls he will be positioned center stage come the debate. But the dark horse in the race could be Ohio Gov. Kasich who has surged to fourth place in a poll in New Hampshire. Nationally he’s barely on the radar but his message appears to be resonating with voters in the first in the nation primary. Two early front-runners, Rubio and Paul, have both seen their stars dim as more candidates have jumped into the race. Paul, who was courting the libertarian wing of the party, and hoping to galvanize his father Ron Paul’s supporters, instead appears to be fading. Rand Paul was always supposed to be different from Ron Paul. Any serious political observer realized he could not win a Republican nomination—or any nomination—holding the hardcore positions of his father. But his pragmatism has evolved over the years into boilerplate Republican talking points. Today he is a candidate who has very few unique positions on anything. — By Jonathan Bydlak, former Fundraising Director for Ron Paul
Bydlak isn’t the only one who questions his libertarian credentials. SFGN received this statement from the National Libertarian Party on Paul’s views and whether they are consistent with a true libertarian. The Libertarian Party differs with Rand Paul on several issues, notably marriage equality, marijuana, and military intervention. Most of our differences can be attributed to Rand Paul's kowtowing to the Republican Party and its Big Government, socially intolerant, interventionist agenda. Rand Paul introduced a budget amendment to increase military spending by 16 percent. Libertarians call for cutting military spending 60 percent, getting out of the Middle East, and bringing our troops home. Rand Paul sidesteps the issues of marriage equality and ending the failed drug prohibition. The LP has always insisted on the rights of consenting adults to engage in any behavior, or enter into any contract, as they see fit so long as they harm no one else. — Carla Howell, Political Director National Libertarian Party Rubio, on the other hand, has simply just disappeared from the headlines. The upcoming debate will undoubtedly raise some profiles and possible sink a campaign or two. White House Watch will be watching. Meanwhile on the Democratic front Hillary Clinton continues to dominate the polls. According to the same poll mentioned above the former secretary of state has tops the poll with 55 percent, with 17 percent for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and 13 percent for Vice President Joseph Biden. No other candidate has more than 1 percent, while 11 percent are undecided.

July News from SFAN Sean McShee
An SFAN member brought up a problem that some of his clients had reported. John Marangio reported on the treatment of Hepatitis C, an infection that co-occurs frequently with HIV infection. Cliff Eserman (Incompas Insurance) reported that insurance companies have cancelled the insurance of some RWC clients. Those clients at risk have transitioned to Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans and have incomes that vary throughout the year. This variability causes their ACA subsidies to change. When the FL-Department of Health learns of changes to the subsidy, they cease paying the premium, but fail to notify the client. They do this relatively late in the payment cycle, leaving the client without an option
Known Chronic Hep C Cases Top 5 Fla. Counties January- April, 2015
to correct the problem. The client knows nothing about this cancellation until their insurance company sends them a cancellation notice. The client then can go back to Ryan White Care (RWC), which only covers HIV conditions. Mara Burger (FL-DOH) reported that the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) does not manage the subsidies for ACA plans. The Federal-State Health Insurance Marketplace manages the subsidies, calculates them, and requests clarifying information about income and household. Burger stated, “Insurance is not immediately cancelled when their subsidy changes without giving them the opportunity to make up the difference.” As of press time, it was not possible to clarify two facts: 1) how much notice is given to clients that a problem exists with their insurance subsidy, and 2) whether
FL-DOH or the Marketplace Exchange has the responsibility to notify the client that a problem exists with their insurance. According to the CDC, the Hep C virus infects the liver, with about 75 percent of infected people developing a chronic infection. People can spread Hep C in several ways: through sharing injecting or snorting equipment, getting amateur tattoos or body piercings, or having “rough” sex. Hep C infection can last for years with no visible symptoms. The CDC recommends that all people with HIV infection, all Baby Boomers, and all people who have “rough sex” take a Hep C test. Alan Ginsberg, author of Howl, died of Hep C infection in 1997. John Marengo reported that new treatments for Hep C can cure patients in only twelve weeks. Marangio recommended that providers attend educational dinners hosted by pharmaceutical companies to learn the technical aspects. The major problems with these treatments involve adherence to a prescribed regimen and resistance to the drug. Drug resistance refers to a virus that has evolved to resist the effects of a particular drug, making that drug useless for that infected person. Adherence refers to taking the drug as prescribed. Strict adherence prevents the infecting virus from evolving to resist treatment. Combination pill treatments for Hep C can reduce issues with adherence. Marengo stressed that Specialty Pharmacies have the resources to help patients having problems with adherence or drug resistance. Just as treating HIV infection requires specialized knowledge, treating Hep C requires specialized knowledge. In HIV news, the AIDS Institute has launched a new website focused on AIDS and aging issues www.nhaad.org. Worldwide 3.6 million people living with HIV infection are fifty or older. On July 14, UNAIDS announced that the goal of getting 15 million people living with HIV into treatment has been achieved, nine months ahead of schedule. To read the UNAIDS report on how AIDS changed everything, please visit http://bit. ly/1DeBRXY.

Wedding BellSSS
Jorge Richa
Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce
As expected, following the recent decision by the Supreme Court to legalize gay marriage nationwide, the same sex wedding market has exploded. A report from the Williams Institute, a national think tank at the UCLA School of Law, estimates that 24,248 same-sex couples will marry in Florida during the first three years it is legal. Those weddings, according to the report, would generate $182.2 million to the state and local economy and create between 875 and 2,626 jobs in the tourism and recreation sector. The above mentioned facts along with a thorough dialogue on “LGBT Hospitality & Gay Weddings Market in Miami” will be discussed at the next MDGLCC’s luncheon to be held on August 26 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. Businesses and the community at large are invited to participate of this educational networking event presented by the MDGLCC in partnership with the Greater Miami & Beaches Hotel Association and the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. Putting together a wedding celebration is not an easy task. It is an arduous process for couples to select and decide on all the elements that will make their ceremony and celebration memorable. One thing to consider is the art of choosing a wedding photographer. Here are a few pointers on the subject matter provided by esteem Chamber member Marta Neira of Marta Neira Photography Martaneira.com After the cake is cut, the flowers are wilted, and the stories have been shared about your special day, only your photos will remain. That’s why finding the right photographer to capture your special day is so important. So many couples are left upset and disappointed because they chose an unexperienced photographer who failed to capture the emotion of the day and missed all the important moments. What should you look for? When selecting a wedding photographer, there are several important elements you should keep in mind: personality, true support in the LGBTQ community, photographer’s style, and cost. Personality & LGTB Community Member or Ally. First and most importantly is
the character and personality of the individual who you will hire to capture your day, and invite as a guest to your wedding. Do you both like and feel comfortable with this person? Do you trust them to handle such an important day in your life? Will your friends and family like them? Your photographer will probably spend more time by your side on your wedding day than your own parents or BFF. No matter how much you love someone’s work, make sure your personalities click before you invite him or her along for one of the most important days of your life. Is this person an LGBTQ member or a true ally, not just a photo house adding to their overall sales potential? It’s important that they don’t have an insincere bias and understand all we have gone through to finally get to have these equal rights to marry.
Style!
The second element and almost as equally important as personality is the photographer’s eye. That is, the way he or she sees and captures the wedding day. Make sure to spend time talking about what’s important to you. A wonderful photographer will capture the essence of the day and not miss the important moments or people.
Cost?
What do you do when it comes to budgeting? According to a survey run buy the largest online wedding website, the number one regret couples had is that they wished they would have spent more money on their wedding photography. A professional photographer will have invested in the best photography equipment and top of the line editing software. They will put in the time and effort to make sure your wedding photos are incredible, including hours of postprocessing to really make them shine What separates the good from the bad is in the eye of the beholder; after all, art is subjective. Just make sure you feel great about the person you hire and see a distinction in the work. In the end, you can’t afford to be disappointed when the curtains close on your wedding day.

fulfill the organization’s mission. Clevenger estimates there to be upwards of 150 active volunteers at Poverello spread out over the food pantry, thrift store and wellness center. “The backbone of Poverello is the quality of its volunteer/client relationships,” Father Collins declares on the Poverello website. “Perhaps more than any other illness, HIV/ AIDS challenges human relationships most deeply. It causes us to evaluate our attitudes regarding morality, sexuality and how we judge one another.” For many newly diagnosed HIV patients, seeking care is a daunting task. At Poverello, help is there for those who want it. “This can be used as a stepping stone,” said L.J. McHugh, a senior administrative assistant. “It does not have to be a lifestyle.” For those employed at Poverello, it is a job. Workers often drive trucks and deliver
furniture from the thrift shop and pick up goods to be donated. Poverello’s center in Wilton Manors encompasses more than eight thousand square feet. Plans are in the works, Clevenger said, for a second facility in Broward County. “It is fulfilling to run an organization that actually does something,” Rosairo said. “You see where the money goes.” To qualify as a Poverello client, individuals must be in the Ryan White Part A federal government program and be classified with earnings of 15 percent below the federal poverty guidelines. Government officials routinely are on site in Wilton Manors to assess the public’s needs. Additionally, Poverello offers estate planning services for tax deductible giving and has an online eBay affiliate where unique items are auctioned off daily.
POVERELLO HOPES TO STRIKE IT BIG AT THIS YEAR’S BOWL-A-THON Denise Royal Have a little extra time to spare? Poverello hopes you can come out and play at its Bowling to Fight Hunger fundraiser. It will be held on Saturday, August 15. It’s the event’s 25th anniversary. Since 1990, the event has grown exponentially. Back then participants took up 22 lanes. Now the Bowl-A-Thon is held at Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac to accommodate a bigger crowd bowling across 56 lanes. Jo Anne McCann’s team “Bad News Bowlers” hopes to strike out on one of those lanes. Her team and at least 8 others are sponsored by Sidelines in Wilton Manors.
SouthFloridaGayNews
“This is my second time being involved with this fundraiser,” she said. “It is such a fun event. Part of the fun is the friendly competition among the teams; now I am pretty certain that our Bad News Bowlers’ team will not win bragging rights with the scores, that’s why we are committed to do our best with the fundraising part of the challenge,” McCann said. Last year Poverello raised $68,000. This year they hope to raise at least $75,000. The money raised will be used to provide Poverello’s pantry the ability to provide lifesaving services to its clients.

If you are a business, you can sponsor the event, or donate goods and services for our silent auction/raffle items which account for a good portion of the $75,000 goal,” said Poverello’s Event Coordinator Kevin Clevenger. Due to the popularity of the bowl-a-thon, Poverello had to move the event from Manors Lanes in Wilton Manors to the Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac, in order to accommodate the growing event. The move westward is also a sign of Poverello’s commitment to serve all of Broward County. It’s the work done by Poverello that inspired McCann to get involved. “One of the best reasons why I feel good about giving the time and efforts specifically to the Poverello charity
is that it is all about our community helping our community. So many times we donate to very large national causes, which are also very important, but knowing that a $20 donation will provide up to 12 nutritious meals to those in need here in our community is great. So as my five member team reaches our goal of $1,000 we know we will provide up to 600 meals. That feels good.” McCann said. With just a couple of weeks to go, 57 teams have raised more than $31,785. Finally, unwise business decisions on the part of the Granatsteins, who bought the P-House in 1999 from Hodge’s heirs, took the P-House to the brink of bankruptcy. The last time I visited the Parliament House was in the summer of 2012. The rooms were a bit run-down, and “balcony bingo” was not what it used to be. But the pool parties were still hot; the bars and disco still attracted crowds of all genders and sexual orientations; and the fierce Darcel Stevens now ruled over the drag shows at the Footlight Theater and Cabaret where Miss P once reigned supreme. I won a trivia contest; tried my voice at karaoke; enjoyed a conversation with a friendly go-go boy (working his way through college); and even met Susan Unger (though she surely does not remember me), sitting at the pool side bar, surrounded by her gay guests. that need to be preserved as community Wikipedia landmarks. For LGBT Floridians, Orlando’s Parliament House is a community landmark that served us well for forty years, improving the lives of several generations of queer tourists and locals. In 2013 OUT.com placed the Parliament House on its list of “200 of the Greatest Gay Bars in the World,” describing it as “less a bar and more an entertainment complex. Seven bars on ten acres provide visitors to the Parliament House almost any experience they want, be it sporty, campy, grimy or glam.” For all its shortcomings, the Parliament House was and is Florida’s “gay kingdom;” a queer oasis in the middle of the Bible Belt. I congratulate “La Casa del Parlamento” on its “Phenomenal Phorty” year anniversary and pray that it continues to serve and thrill and please us for many years to come. The Parliament House is located at 410 North Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando. Visit ParliamentHouse.com for more information.

If You Could Read My Mind A PTSD Diary #7
David-Elijah Nahmod
O
The Darkest Shadow, part 2
n April 1, 2015 I stood before Judge Charles Crompton in San Francisco Superior Court and requested a restraining order against a psychotic fan of the classic TV series “Dark Shadows.” Said fan, who claims to have been a “close friend” of series star Jonathan Frid, had been waging a slander and harassment campaign against me that went on for nearly five years. Though I blocked her on Facebook in 2010, she admitted to at least two people that she continues to “monitor” my page under a false identity. She contacted personal friends of mine in order to “warn” them about me. She urged people not to work with me in a professional capacity, gleefully telling anyone who would listen all about how “sick” I am. I suppose there’s a grain of truth to the “sickness” claims — I do, after all, live with PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. As I wrote in the first edition of this column, I developed PTSD after my parents subjected me to gay conversion therapy and years of religious mental abuse during my childhood. What my parents did to me, and what happened to me as a result, was the weapon my tormentor chose to use against me. Since last summer Frid’s “dear friend” escalated her campaign of bullying and hate. Her issue was a “Dark Shadows’ LGBT Connection,” column I had written about the show’s massive gay fan base, and what Frid’s status as a gay actor meant to them — she claims that I outed her idol. I stood before Judge Crompton holding a letter from the doctor who treats my PTSD. The letter urged that the restraining order be granted — the doctor stated that the conduct of Frid’s friend posed a danger to my health. I also had emails sent to me from my tormentor’s personal email account: she was threatening to contact my editors. Because of a minor clerical error in my court filings, Judge Crompton dismissed my request “with prejudice” — meaning that I cannot refile the request. The judge was offered my documents but he ignored them. Less than
twenty four hours later my tormentor contacted me (and others) several times to gloat about her “victory,” to ridicule my PTSD and to say that I’m a con artist for claiming to be disabled. I am in fact considered disabled by federal law because of my PTSD diagnosis. I am entitled to access disabled services and am afforded legal protections under the Americans With Disabilities Act — Judge Crompton is now being investigated for possible ADA violation after his deplorable conduct regarding my case. This hasn’t just happened in online chatrooms, but during in-person encounters at Dark Shadows Festivals. Anti-gay attacks are frequent, with even LGBT identified fans participating in these attacks. I was told by the organizers of the Dark Shadows Festivals that nothing would be done about this. DS cast members told me that “Frid’s best friend” is a “nice person,” an opinion they stood by after seeing the emails in which she threatened to contact my editors and made snarky references to how “sick” I am. It’s possible that the Dark Shadows Festivals are in violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act. The Dark Shadows Festivals are wheelchair accessible and allow the admission of service animals such as guide dogs. But dating back to 1980s, the promoters of these events have knowingly permitted an environment of hostile aggression to escalate — this may be a violation of ADA laws which prohibit “exclusion, segregation and unequal treatment”. To date, more than two dozen people, several with severe disabilities, have told me they were subjected to this kind of treatment while attempting to participate in Dark Shadows fan events. If you are disabled and are physically able to enter a venue but are made to feel excluded or unwelcome, your rights are being violated. This applies to all public venues and events, Dark Shadows fan events or otherwise. Disabilities covered by the ADA include emotional disorders such as PTSD, Bipolar, depression, and all physical disabilities.

Reflections from a Black Bi Queer Woman Organizer at Netroots Nation

h, yes. The sense of isolation I felt as a Black woman at #NN15 was amplified by biphobia, both external and internal. When I introduced Jennicet Eva Gutiérrez at the #QPOCNN15 caucus I co-organized, I mentioned that multiple people had asked me whether I would go to the White House and be disruptive, to which I told them, "what makes you think I haven't?" My friends are dying, we are recovering from brutal rapes (5 time winner there myself), and when we battle suicide there's nearly a 50 percent chance we won't win. Imagine knowing 50 percent of the largest part of the LGBT community might not #MakeItToTomorrow. Then imagine no one giving a shit. Instead they increase my chances of being raped by promoting the appropriation of bisexual bodies and the rape of bisexual women in media. Instead they tell me bisexual is binary and I should be uplifting transgender voices instead of speaking about bisexual people. How dare they remove transgender bisexuals from the picture and erase decades of our work together? I would not be a bisexual organizer without transgender support, mentorship, advice, friendship and radical solidarity. I want to honor and acknowledge just a few of the trans folks who taught me what I know and allied with me. Those whose oppression was bound up with mine, so we shook chains together! Shirley O Bushnell, Kylar Broadus, Diego Miguel Sanchez Apr, Monica Roberts, Tara Madison Avery, Bamby Salcedo, Jake Finney, Mara Keisling, Theresa Sparks, JoAnne Keatley, Masen Davis, Kale Likover, Hayden L Mora, Scout, Raja Gopal Bhattar, Jay Brown, Ashley Love, Loree CookDaniels, Allyson Robinson, Pauline Park, Aud Traher and to so many others, thank you for being everything to me and "the B in LGBT," which many of you, but not all, also call home. The 2013 Bisexual Community Issues Roundtable at the White House would never have occurred if transgender meetings at the White House hadn't happened first. Folks might tell you the B fought to be added to LG and now its time for T but the truth is we've ALL always been there since the beginning. Surviving with nothing but ourselves and each other.

SFGN’s “Speak OUT” is a weekly feature giving a regular voice to South Florida LGBT leaders.
What are your thoughts on the 2015 Equality Act?
Let’s talk about a contingency basis.
“
“
Congress must finally pass comprehensive legislation protecting LGBT Americans from discrimination. It doesn’t matter whether this is accomplished by enacting new legislation dealing specifically with the LGBT community or by amending existing civil rights legislation. It needs to be done now." — Ken Keechl, noted trial attorney and LGBT rights activist
“
Discrimination against the LGBT community continues to persist despite tremendous recent legal advances. Legislation like the Equality Act of 2015 seek to broadly expand anti discrimination protections across numerous areas. The Act will likely face tremendous opposition but it is still critically important to pursue these rights as the dialogue and debate foster education and progress."
Why do we need comprehensive legislation that ensures Full Federal Equality for LGBT Americans? The Equality Act, as it is called, would guarantee explicit, permanent protections for LGBT people in many of the most important aspects of our lives banning discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity in matters of employment, housing, access to public places, federal funding, credit, education and jury service. With more than 140 cosponsors in the House and at least 39 in the Senate, and the support of major corporations including Apple Inc., The Dow The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be basedto solely upon Chemical Company, and Levi Strauss & Co., this is the moment pass advertisments. — Michael C. Gongora, former Vice Mayor of Miami Beach
— George Castrataro, noted attorney and LGBT activist
“
As we work to mobilize support in Washington, it is critical that we not only address discrimination in employment, but also in housing, public accommodations, credit, education, etc. Therefore, the Equality Act of 2015 is the appropriate vehicle to achieve our goals. I am proud that all four members of Congress representing Palm Beach County (Ted Deutch, Lois Frankel, Alcee Hastings and Patric Murphy) signed on as original co-sponsors to the bill." With the hostile leadership in both houses of Congress, and the inability for the two parties to work together to enact and substantive legislation, I do not expect the bill to make much progress in the current Congress. It is extremely unfortunate that not a single Republican has signed on as a c-sponsor to the Equity Act. Therefore, it is critical that across the nation. LGBT people and allies register and vote in the 2016 elections. And although the Log Cabin Republicans and others may disagree, I believe we should use a Congressional candidate's willingness to cosponsor the Equity Act as a litmus test for our support." In this day an age, I find it hard to believe that any LGBT rights advocacy group would object to amending our civil rights laws to specifically include "sexual orientation" and "gender identity." The fears that have been expressed about opening up the Civil Rights Act to amendments are unfounded. We do not control the agenda in Congress right now, and there is a growing movement to address further protecting religious individuals from perceived discrimination anyway. Unfortunately, the current leadership may be more likely to move forward with that than they are with protecting LGBT people from actual discrimination. — Rand Hoch, President and Founder, Palm Beach County Human Rights Council

Most Americans are unaware that LGBT people can be discriminated against in jobs and housing in the majority of states. As was true with marriage equality, we need to win a cultural war, in addition to hoping for a legal remedy, by putting a face on the issues. We must tell our stories." — Brian McNaught, noted columnist, author and LGBT activist
“
The bill is long overdue but as Senator Merkley said, it's not enough or written/submitted in the best way possible. Lets get this done the right way." — R. J. Hadley, community activist, Pride Center Health Educator

City Accused of Mismanaging CDBG Funds Money will be used for security cameras, WiFi By Michael d’Oliveira
A decision by city officials to use Community Development Block Grant [CDBG] funds for security cameras brought accusations of mismanagement and ignoring the public by resident Michael Rajner. At the July 28 commission meeting, Rajner said commissioners should have spent the $64,000 in CDGB funds on what the majority of residents wanted: improvements to the road, including sidewalks and fixing holes in the street. Officials said the security camera idea was suggested by a resident. The cameras, as well as WiFi service in the park, were approved in a 3-2 vote, Commissioners Tom Green and Julie Carson dissenting. CDBG funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to cities to address unique community development needs. Highland Estates, located north of Northeast 26 Street and east of Northeast 6 Street, is the only area of the city that qualifies for the funding. In the past, Wilton Manors has used CDBG funding to buy and develop the 14-space overflow parking lot near Island City Park Preserve. Other uses include fitness stations, fencing, sidewalks, a drainage system, solar lighting, landscaping and street resurfacing. Rajner also renewed his call for making parks more dog friendly,
including Island City Park Preserve, located in Highland Estates, and the small overflow parking lot. Todd DeJesus, capital projects and grants manager, said there’s not enough sidewalk repair work to qualify under the grant rules. “It has to be one project.” Commissioner Tom Green disagreed and said the road and sidewalk work needed in Highland Estates could easily use up $64,000. “Funny how there’s never enough money. [Now there’s too much]. We talk about connectivity. Well, there isn’t any.” Commissioner Carson agreed. “There’s nothing more important than sidewalks to walk on. We just finished hearing about public safety,” she said, referring to the large crowd which attended the meeting to demand something be done to improve the safety of Wilton Drive. Vice Mayor Scott Newton said the city needs to survey residents of Highlands Estates first before adding sidewalks. Homeowners, who have sidewalks added in front of their property, at the cost of some of their yard, might get very upset. “You’re going to have a hornet’s nest,” he said. WMG

City Closer to Dixie Hwy Redevelopment By Michael d’Oliveira
As Wilton Drive gets most of the public’s attention when it comes to public safety, city officials are closer to making Dixie Highway more pedestrian friendly. The city has issued a call for bids for the Dixie Highway Streetscape Enhancement project to improve the 0.4-mile stretch of road from the Middle River north to Five Points. The improvements will include decorative pedestrian safety lighting, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, landscaping and signage. The max bid allowed will be $866,250. All bids are due no later
than Aug. 24 at 2:30 p.m. The improvements are being funded through a grant from the federal government. The city has also been given approval for a $996,216 state grant to improve Northeast 26 Street east from Andrews Avenue and Five Points. The money would be used to reduce lanes from 12 to 10 feet, improve sidewalks, crosswalks, landscaping, lighting, signage and resurface the road. WMG

Those who have wanted the lighted crosswalk in front of city hall on Wilton Drive moved to Northeast 20 Street finally have the answer they were looking for. On July 22, the city announced that the Florida Department of Transportation [FDOT] had decided to install the lighted crosswalk there. A spokesperson said FDOT would also be completing a comprehensive traffic study in the next couple of weeks aimed at finding other ways to make the street safer. While the new crosswalk is constructed, FDOT will install signs to warn motorists of pedestrian activity. Mayor Gary Resnick said he expects the crosswalk to take about 12 months but officials will try and get FDOT to expedite the process. The city’s announcement came one day after Wilton Manors resident Greg Futchi, 68, was killed crossing near 2000 Wilton Drive at 10:45 p.m. According to police, Futchi was not using a crosswalk when he was hit by a driver going southbound on the street. Other recent accidents on Wilton Drive also involved pedestrians not using crosswalks. Futchi’s death led to a rally in front of city hall on July 24. Protesters demanded officials take action to make Wilton Drive safer. Four days later, they moved their protest inside city hall. In a standing room only commission meeting on July 28, and with signs that read “Change the Drive Now,” and “Mayor Resnick Must Go” as well as pictures of Futchi, city officials were criticized for not taking action sooner. “We have been patient. We have been waiting. The Drive has changed and so should we,” said Doug Cureton, owner of Some Men Like It Haute on Wilton Drive. “I saw a car come to a screeching halt in front of my business to avoid hitting someone.” Resident Doug Blevins said the time for debate is over. “It’s been studied to death . . . literally, as we’ve seen last week. But blaming will not bring back these precious lives. Take action now.” This is the second death on Wilton Drive since 2010. Blevins and
others also renewed their call to reduce Wilton Drive from four lanes to two. The Two Lane Initiative, first suggested several years ago, calls for the city’s takeover of Wilton Drive, now owned by the Florida Department of Transportation [FDOT]. Proponents of the Two Lane Initiative want to see parking spaces and landscaping added – similar to how Las Olas is configured. Tom Tabor, one of the main proponents of the Two Lane Initiative, said Wilton Manors needs to follow the example set by other cities across the nation, which have already done similar projects. Commissioners, who have balked at taking over the street in the past, seemed more willing to do so now. “I don’t know how we can do this without a lane reduction. I, quite frankly, think it’s time to do this,” Commissioner Tom Green said. Commissioner Justin Flippen added, “I will not be satisfied until the road is made narrower and safer.” According to FDOT, reconfiguring the road would cost about $500,000. Those who favor two lanes say revenue generated from parking could help fund the cost. Nick Berry, owner of Rumors and Courtyard Café, both on Wilton Drive, said business owners are willing to help fund improvements through the Business Improvement District set up for the street. “We want to be taxed,” he said. Until then, said Tabor, the city should do whatever it can, including traffic cones, planters and striping the street, to slow down traffic. But FDOT’s ownership of the road, said officials, precludes them from doing much in the short term and commissioners defended their previous attempts to work with FDOT in the past. That effort includes getting FDOT to lower the speed limit on Wilton Drive from 35 to 30 miles per hour and getting the signal crosswalk installed in front of city hall. The city tried years ago to get the crosswalk installed at Wilton Drive and Northeast 20 Street but FDOT denied the request in favor of putting it in front of city hall. “The city has been working on this for a long time,” said Green who called for more crosswalks. “You can’t ask people to cross [at a crosswalk] if there are only four crosswalks.” He also called for a heavier police presence. “I hope Wilton Drive becomes known as a speed trap.” The promised lighted crosswalk, said Vice Mayor Scott Newton, is also because of city efforts. “It’s not because of what happened to that gentleman. We have done things.” Not everyone blamed Futchi’s death entirely on the road though. Resident Kimber White, who was not at the meeting, said both pedestrians and the city are responsible for public safety. “I agree we have issues and they need [to be] addressed 150 percent but every accident and or death came from people jaywalking because it's too inconvenient to walk 50 feet to cross. We can put crosswalks at every corner but until the citizen participates in his or her own safety and our bars make sure their patrons are OK to leave, and if not assist them, we will not have the problem fixed.” WMG

Opinion
Blue Moon 2018 By Sal Torre
This past Friday, July 31, I sat outside looking for the rare Blue Moon, the second full moon this month. Unfortunately, the cloudy and rainy night hampered my viewing, but gave me the opportunity to relax after a very busy week here in Wilton Manors. As I sat in my yard listening to the rain, my mind began to wander, and I started to think about how things might be different here in Wilton Manors when the next Blue Moon occurs in 2018. That’s right, three years until another Blue Moon. That’s why one should seize the opportunity to embrace this special night as a time to step out of one’s comfort zone and wonder what changes are needed, what change in direction, what change in action is needed to move ahead to a better place before the next Blue Moon. One safe bet for life in Wilton Manors 2018 will see the Church property on 26th Street finally developed. After years of the East Neighborhood Association’s fighting any plans put forth for this site, the developer should be submitting plans for high-end townhomes that would not be rental units. Other development projects might include major plans for properties along Andrews Avenue once the city moves ahead with zoning changes and redevelopment plans put forth by the zoning study recently completed. The Complete Streets Program, if approved by our City Commission, might offer major funding by the MPO, so that the entire city can benefit from additional bike lanes, pedestrian crosswalks, sidewalks, and safer roadways, The elephant in the room is still Wilton Drive. What does this community need to do now to make the changes we
want before the next Blue Moon? First and foremost, we need to move out of the past and stop the blame game. Of course FDOT and the State wanted to give the city jurisdiction of Wilton Drive a few years back. Thank heavens our city and our elected officials chose not to move ahead at that time, since the entire financial burden would have fallen unto the backs of every resident of Wilton Manors. Not only would we have had the financial responsibility of Wilton Drive, but would have had to agree to take financial responsibility for the entire stretch of State Road 811, from Sunrise Blvd to Oakland Park Blvd, because the state would only release jurisdiction from those two main points. Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park agreed to a jurisdiction change for their portions of the State Road, but only if Wilton Manors picked up the entire tab for maintenance, upkeep, etc., an unacceptable financial burden for our citizens. Just a minor piece of information our Main Street Two–Lane enthusiast forgot to mention this past week. But let’s move on from old news to what is now possible without breaking the bank. The good news is the state’s new willingness to work with cities; and together with Fort Lauderdale, the MPO, and Complete Streets planning, we stand a solid chance of seeing a joint plan for lane reductions, crosswalks, bike lanes, and more – a plan with a price tag not solely paid for by the residents of Wilton Manors. This is the type of planning, with solid financial responsibility, which can actually bring about the changes we want to see by 2018. Another possibility might be in the works, a plan between the state and the county to exchange certain roadways
throughout Broward County. If this plays out, Wilton Drive would become a county road, giving our city much more leeway to implement the changes we all want to see happen. Planning for Wilton Drive is definitely looking solid for us to see major improvements once the next Blue Moon comes again in 2018. Alas, the big challenge I see for 2018 is still parking, parking, parking. The city is at a fork in the road and needs to choose. One road leads to small surface lots at various places around the Arts and Entertainment District, while the other road leads to investing in a municipal parking facility at the now empty corner of Wilton Drive at Hagen Park/City Hall. Recent city discussions have shown that moving ahead with another small surface lot with only minimum spaces would be very expensive and take over 40 years to recover cost. A municipal structure with ground floor retail and parking levels above could be constructed while keeping the majority of the Hagen Park surface lot open during construction. Once completed, the surface lot would be then available for park expansion. Yes, these are tough choices; but we need to take a step back, out of our comfort zone, and think about what we really need to do to bring about the changes we want to see by the next Blue Moon, 2018. It will be here before you know it. Once my wandering mind came back down to the present, I realized that the sky had cleared and there, in all its glory, was the Blue Moon shining brightly, looking down on Wilton Manors. Why? …..Cause life is just better here. WMG

Higher Taxes!
Commission approves tentative property tax increase By Michael d’Oliveira
Property values are up in Wilton Manors and commissioners may take advantage with a slight increase in property taxes. At their budget and millage meeting on July 29, commissioners passed a preliminary millage rate of 6.2683 from the proposed 6.0683. The rate passed 3-2 with Mayor Gary Resnick and Commissioner Tom Green dissenting. Commissioners can still lower the millage at their final millage meeting on Sept. 11 but state law prohibits them from raising it further. This year’s estimated budget is $31,313,000, an increase of $1.13 million over last year. But, said Assistant City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson, most of the increased revenue is eaten up by increases in salaries, pension costs and the city’s water meter replacement program. The fire assessment fee will also increase for home owners. Residential will see an increase from
$169.80 to $195.10. Commercial will rise from $25.45 to $28.74. Industrial will go from $2.55 to $2.14. Institutional will increase from $18.47 to $24.73. Government will go from $21.22 to $26.77. Nursing home will increase from $67.99 to $75.46. Vice Mayor Scott Newton suggested the millage increase, which will generate an estimated $210,000. “I’m not for the increased millage but sometimes we need to do what’s right for the city,” said Newton. The vice mayor suggested the increased revenue could be used to hire a full time park ranger – Colohatchee Park has become known as a place for public sex acts – and another police officer. It could also be used to make parking improvements. Commissioner Julie Carson said parking is one issue that “has been on our backs for a number of years.” Resident Paul Kuta suggested the city
purchase the vacant lot located behind Bona Pizza on Wilton Drive. “We should jump on this opportunity.” If approved, the increase would cost homeowners with homestead exemptions an extra $33.67 in taxes per year. Those without the exemption would pay $325.23. Resnick said he’s generally not in favor of raising taxes when property values increase. He warned that the extra money might not be used for the purposes suggested by Newton. “It tends to go to things we don’t talk about up here.” He also cautioned against a repeat of the city’s last parking venture, the 42-space lot at
Northeast 8 Terrace and Northeast 26 Street, which cost about $780,000 to purchase and pave. Resnick called the expense “exorbitant.” Commissioner Justin Flippen said residents have told him to keep the millage rate as is or lower it. “I’m not sure that’s necessary. [This budget] doesn’t compromise services. I would be cautious.” He also suggested that a police officer, not park ranger, might be needed to help monitor Colohatchee. “Not if sure a ranger will do the job.” Newton responded that the increase might prevent a cut in services if another unforeseen expense came about. Dog obedience classes offered at Hagen Park By Natalya Jones
Is your dog a bad pup who keeps peeing on the floor and eating your shoes? Thanks to Hagen Park and their dog obedience classes, your shoes and your house will be relatively safe. It all started in April 1979 when Diane Sedberry, Donna Carvalho, Terri diMarino, and Diane Freund decided to start the class. Sedberry herself was inspired to do the class because of her own dog. “My first Doberman was three quarters of my body weight and I knew I needed to be able to walk her, and not vice versa,” she said. “Since the Doberman was a rescue dog, the members that I adopted her from were all doing obedience training and encouraged me to begin training my new rescue Doberman. I enjoyed the work and began formal training and AKC Obedience Trails to earn titles on two of my Rescue Dobermans. Over the years I titled the two Dobes, and four Shetland Sheepdogs, in Rally obedience, formal Obedience and Canine Good Citizen. I have also gone to events such as career day at Wilton Manors Elementary many years ago and the Ladies Club of Deerfield to show obedience demos. We also have a Drill Team of 4-6 dogs and their handlers that we perform for at the Imperial Point HOA once a year.” Dogs who attend the class will learn basic skills such as loose leash heeling and commands such as “come,” “sit,” “down,” “stay,” and more. Owners are also encouraged to play with their dogs and do minor jumping in the beginner’s class. Rally obedience classes, on the other hand, are geared for trainers that are showing in the Rally show ring to earn titles on their dogs. Other classes offered include the Canine Good Citizen Classes and the AKC (American Kennel Club) testing. Your dog will also be in very good paws, er, hands. The trainers as well as their own dogs are certified: their dogs participate in Obedience Trials and all have obedience

titles. Jackie Powell, one of the trainers, is accredited with a CPDT-KA (Canine Pet Dog Trainer, Knowledge Assessed) Title from AKC (American Kennel Club). In addition, there are at least three qualified teachers at each beginner’s class. “We are a non-profit organization and our trainers volunteer their time because of our love of dogs and not wanting to see any dog have to go to a shelter, for lack of training,” Sedberry commented. In regards to any inspiring stories she may have, Sedberry said, “We all started out as students ourselves, and have come full circle to show our dogs in AKC obedience competition and to want to give our time freely to the club, to teach others how to train their dogs. We hope to inspire all owners to train their dogs and help their dogs to be all they can be. We encourage the trainer’s children to stand in with their parents so they can be an important part of the family dog’s life. Some students only train once a week while they are in class, other students take it to the next level and work with their beloved pet every day to have something they are really proud of and show their skill set weekly as they improve. Everyone is actually a dog trainer, we just try to pull that skill to the top and help them to train and totally enjoy their family pet.” Not to mention, all proceeds from the classes are given to the Doberman Rescue League, to help pay expenses for vets and food for the homeless and abandoned Dobermans. What’s not to love? Registration for the classes take place at 6:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month, excluding July, November, and December. From there, classes are from 7-8 Thurdays and the Skill Building Drill Class is at 8 on Thursday for $5. All classes are held on the basketball courts at Hagen Park, 2020 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. Class cost $70 for a 6 week class. Please call Diane at 954-563-7061 for more information. WMG
The proposed Walmart Supercenter at the former Kmart location on Oakland Park Boulevard has city commissioners in Wilton Manors worried. “It’s going to be a nightmare without controls,” said Mayor Gary Resnick at a recent commission meeting. Oakland Park Commissioners are being asked to approve the construction of a new 121,345 square foot building. The existing vacant Kmart building is 117,692 square feet. The number of parking spaces will also increase from 475 to 494 and the new building would be closer to Oakland Park Boulevard and further from the Middle River. Oakland Park officials hope to make the riverfront portion of the property part of a planned half mile promenade stretching from Northeast 6 Avenue to Dixie Highway. The building is located at 670 E. Oakland Park Boulevard. Wilton Manors is to the west, the other side of Northeast 6 Avenue, and to the south, the other side of the Middle River. The store would have between 225 and 350 employees. Even if the commission rejects the project, Walmart can move into the existing building because it’s already zoned for that use. The vote, which has been postponed twice, is scheduled to be held tonight, Aug. 5, at Oakland Park City Hall. Vice Mayor Tim Lonergan and Commissioner John Adornato have abstained from the vote, saying the companies they work for have done business with Walmart or its foundation. That leaves the decision to the
three remaining commissioners – Mayor Jed Shank and Commissioners Sara Guevrekian and Shari McCartney. Steven Wherry, the Fort Lauderdale attorney representing Walmart, told Oakland Park Commissioners that moving into the existing building was not the first choice of Walmart but that the company would do so if its request to redevelop was denied. “The worst case scenario, Walmart will move into the [existing] Kmart.” Wilton Manors officials, who have spoken at Oakland Park Commission meetings, say their main concern is an estimated increase of traffic on Northeast 6 Avenue adjacent to the Kmart site. Commissioner Tom Green said traffic from the Walmart could have an adverse impact on Wilton Drive, about half a mile south. “It may force us to narrow Wilton Drive,” he said. Walmart has agreed to some restrictions on Northeast 6 Avenue, including a promise that their truck drivers will not make right hand turns onto the street to make deliveries. “We’re willing to commit to not making that turn. Walmart has control over its fleet of trucks. We can make a commitment like that and stick to it. We can be flexible,” Wherry said. The reaction by residents, both in Oakland Park and Wilton Manors, has been more mixed. Some are worried about delivery trucks and an increase in traffic while others, including Oakland Park resident James Andrews, who lives next to the Kmart, said he will be able to walk to the store and expects his property values to go up. Taking the T Out Of LGBT
Nicola Jane Chase

It has taken time, but now the public has more appreciation for what the T in LGBT stands for. They may still have some way to go in understanding what it actually means to be transgender, however considerable progress has been made. We can partly thank Caitlyn Jenner for expanding that conversation and allowing the T to be equally relevant in the line up of letters. Yet I would argue that the T doesn’t belong there at all. The L, G, and B are about sexual identity; the T is about gender. Lumping the four initials together only enhances the misperception that they are interchangeable terms. They are not. I am a transgender woman. In my 40s I stated recognizing feminine feelings that I couldn’t ignore — but I was still attracted to women. I was questioning my gender yet my sexuality remained unchanged. Only later in my transition did my sexuality change in tandem with my gender — like orbiting planets that never meet. However the sexuality of transgender people (which may or not change) is the most irrelevant factor in our transitions. We are not coming to terms with being attracted to same sex or different sex people, it is the correctness of our assigned gender that we are figuring out. Of course I admire and respect lesbian and gay campaigners over the years who have laid the groundwork for the level of acceptance that there is now, but I am neither gay nor lesbian. I am a straight woman — with a past. As part of an often discriminated against sector of society, there is solace, appeal, and leverage in being part of a group.
Not, however, if the alignment blurs the picture. I would gladly be part of an ‘I hate kale’ group (very easily in fact), though I wouldn’t be comfortable in an ‘I hate fruits and vegetables’ conglomerate if that was the only other option. I’m sure I’d be reassured that others disliked different vegetables, though to be assumed a fruit hater would be skewing my association and not helping the public perception that it really is OK to dislike kale. (I am actually quite fond of broccoli.) Does it matter? Perhaps the route to self-acceptance is relevant. I accepted the unexpected truth about myself, transitioned, and now live my life as the woman I am. In that respect, I am complete, done. I appreciate that I will always be a transgender woman but that’s no reason to wave a flag about it to remind me of my gender past. It was an anomaly, which was corrected; bigger than removing a scar, not as invasive as a bone marrow transplant. My sexuality, meanwhile, is irrelevant. Unlike Groucho Marx, I am happy to be part of a club that has me as a member. I go to an LGBT health clinic in New York, I advocate LGBT causes, and I visit LGBTfriendly venues, so thus I am part of the LGBT community. I certainly have plenty of gay friends (possibly more than if I were not transgender) and just like those people, I had no choice in being what I am. Now is the time to clearly separate and differentiate gender and sexuality: transgender understanding can advance better by severing the suffix from LGB. And to be clear, I would be delighted to be part of the TKH community — Transgender Kale Haters.

It took the hanging of Sandra Bland in a Texas jail to wake people up. Her suspicious “suicide” would have been alarming enough – but five Black women have died while in police custody in just two weeks (July 13-27, 2015). The public’s reaction: this is horribly unbelievable, and absolutely unacceptable. Sadly – as citizens are learning – it’s also all too common. By now, most Americans of all ethnicities are aware of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and most know the names of at least a couple of the Black men who were killed by police for minor – if any – legal infractions. Camera phones are everywhere, and the videos of several high-profile incidents have gone viral. Black women, on the other hand, who are also brutalized, raped, and killed by law enforcement and corrections officers, have been largely ignored. Some of these women are lesbian, bisexual, or trans. All of them are loved by family and friends. Out of this reality, the #SayHerName, #BlackWomenMatter, and #BlackWomensLivesMatter hashtags and action campaigns have been born. These three hashtags on social media print the names, and show the faces, of Black women and girls who were murdered at the hands of police. These hashtags and movements are near and dear to me as a Black woman, because it shows that Black women aren’t invisible, that our lives mean something, and that our deaths mean something as well. Thanks to #SayHerName, in death we have names, and faces. Additionally, when we are killed by those sworn to protect us, the #SayHerName campaign helps to put forth the idea that we too are martyrs for social change. Neither our lives nor our deaths will be in vain. BLAST (Bi, Lesbian and Straight Together) Women of the Palm Beaches has committed to a long-term action campaign to address racism, influence local law enforcement policies to be more transparent and citizensafe, and continue to #SayHerName. The BLAST campaign includes the efforts of local leaders Julie Seaver (Compass Gay & Lesbian Center), Meredith Ockman (NOW and Women’s Health Foundation of South Florida), Paulette Armstead (BLAST and
#SayHerName activist Danielle Allen, co-leader of BLAST’s anti-racism action campaign. Photo by Toni Armstrong Jr. MCC), Shirley Herman and Joan Waitkevicz (Democratic Women’s Club and NOW), Toni Armstrong Jr. (BLAST), Shell Gottsagen (Fair Housing Center of the Greater Palm Beaches, Inc.), Denise Walker (Lesbian Women of the Treasure Coast), and several others. Ongoing BLAST events include antiracism workshops, #SayHerName actionstrategy sessions, meetings with local police and elected officials, participation in #BlackLivesMatter street demonstrations, letter-writing campaigns, and coordinating with other organizations to demand that the Department of Justice and possibly FBI become involved in the investigations of these incidents. The next session will be #SayHerName: Lessons From Shirley Chisholm, during which we will view the documentary Shirley Chisholm ’72: Unbought and Unbossed and analyze her rhetorical and practical strategies for making radical change from within “the system.” Anyone who is committed to working on these issues is encouraged to contact BLAST. The group always welcomes new female members, and is interested in building coalitions with men and mixed groups who are also working on anti-racism projects. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 5, 1920, George Tooker grew up in Bellport on Long Island. Although he wanted to study painting, he went to Harvard, majoring in English, to please his parents. In 1942, he enlisted in the Marine Corps but soon received a medical discharge. At the Art Students League of New York, Tooker met fellow artist Paul Cadmus, who suggested egg-tempera painting, a technique suitable to Tooker’s slow, contemplative working habits. Cadmus free use of homosexual elements in his paintings also influenced Tooker to explore the subject. Jared French, another homosexual and friend of Cadmus, influenced Tooker to explore symbolism in his art. As his style of painting matured, Tooker concentrated more and more on anxiety and alienation. French and Cadmus introduced Tooker to a accomplished gay men, including writers W.H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood as well as photographer George Platt Lynes. In 1946, Tooker’s work was included in “Fourteen Americans” at the Museum of Modern Art. The Whitney Museum of American Art acquired Subway in 1950. Tooker’s long-time partner was painter William Christopher, who died in 1973. Tooker received the National Medal ofArts from President George W. Bush in 2007. He died at age 90 of kidney failure on March 29, 2011.

The Fearless Project
Nicole Wiesenthal
More than 300 LGBT athletes featured in photo book
One gay photographer photographed over 300 LGBT college and high school athletes. Jeff Sheng, once a closeted high school tennis player, just released the photography book and collection of memoirs “Fearless,” depicting numerous out LGBT athletes and their stories. The 34 year-old photographer went to school in Boston where he grew up playing competitive tennis in high school. “In my senior year of high school, I finally began to confront my own sexual orientation for the first time,” Sheng said in his memoir in the book. “I believed that being openly gay and being a competitive athlete were incompatible with each other.” He said he quit tennis when he realized
that the sports community wasn’t very welcoming of LGBT people, and in college at Harvard University, he took up photography. “Photography was a way to mix my interests with social justice works and creativity,” he said. In 2002, he photographed his first LGBT college athlete. “I decided to do a photo series of LGBT students who are playing sports and coming out and doing something I’d never done,” he

said. “It’s very weird to talk about it thirteen years later because I never anticipated the kind of growth the Fearless Project has.” Lauren Neidigh, a 22-year-old director of media for Go Athletes!, a nonprofit for LGBT athletes across the country, was one of the first few people Sheng photographed. Neidigh was an NCAA college swimmer for the University of Arizona. Her coming out story was one of four featured in the book in addition to Sheng’s. “I had struggled as a college sophomore and a swimmer to embrace my lesbian identity and that put me in a dark place,” she said. “I stopped swimming a little bit. I couldn’t decide if I’d keep swimming or quit.” Neidigh made the decision to transfer from the University of Florida to the University of Arizona in her junior year of college. “Everybody was very supportive,” Neidigh said. “I was one of three out athletes on the team.” Neidigh also described her story for OutSports. She ended up doing the photo shoot for Fearless after meeting Sheng at a Nike sports conference. “I was kind of like, ‘Wow,’” she said. “That’s kind of a big deal to me to be able to tell my story and for Jeff to find value in sharing it with others. I felt like I was part of something that mattered.” Sheng began exhibiting the project in 2006 at various high schools and colleges in the country. He said the series has been show at between two and three thousand high school and colleges. “It was really powerful,” he said. “A lot for me as an artist is seeing what happens and seeing how it expands from there.” Sheng came up with the idea for the book in 2012 on the project’s ten-year anniversary. He raised over $50,000 through a kickstarter campaign. “It was the largest photography kick starter drive,” he said. Sheng realized he didn’t want to just make a photography book for the coffee table, he said, so he decided to make it a collection of memoirs and a timeline of LGBT events starting with William Tilden, considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Tilden won fourteen Major singles titles,

the memoirs in the book also express diversity. “There’s an openly transgender athlete playing volleyball, an out lesbian sharing her story about her own difficulties being a Division One swimmer, an athlete of color sharing his own stories about race and his struggle not feeling fully accepted.” Jeff Sheng, Photographer including ten Grand Slams, one World Hard Count Championships and three Pro Slams in about the 1920s. He was shunned by the tennis community and media after being arrested twice for sexual misconduct with under-aged boys. The timeline ends with stories referencing Caitlyn Jenner’s acceptance in society. Sheng also decided to have eight different covers for the book featuring LGBT athletes who represented different spectrums of the community with each cover a specific color from the original Pride flag. “You can choose the athlete that resonates most strongly with your identity or sport or what you want sitting in your house or to give to someone,” he said. “It’s such a beautiful assembly of diversity that I’m really proud of.” Sheng said the memoirs in the book also express diversity. “There’s an openly transgender athlete playing volleyball, an out lesbian sharing her story about her own difficulties being a Division One swimmer, an athlete of color sharing his own stories about race and his struggle not feeling fully accepted,” he said. The final story he said is of one athlete writing to another about giving him the strength and power to help him come out when he was on the track team at school. “It was definitely a challenging format to work with,” he said. “I think that being an artist means always taking on risks and feeling like it’s okay to take on a challenge.” The book, he said, he hopes will make an impact on people. “What I really wanted was for someone
today to hold onto this book and save it and leave it in their bookshelf for decades,” he said. “In time, their children will see it and see how far we’ve come as a society.” The books can be found on FearlessBookStore.com along with Fearless merchandise. The proceeds for the book go directly back into the project. “One of the reasons why I didn’t ever stop photographing the project was because they always say photograph something you’re inspired by or you gained something from,” Sheng said. “These athletes came out on

On his website, you can view his series from 2009 to 2011 on the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Neidigh offers this advice for closeted high school and college athletes. “Just remember that it’s not the end of the world,” she said. “You’re not going to see them again. You can’t live by the book because someone else is making the rules. You just have to do what you want.” soflagaynews //

JULY 25, 2015: Italian MP Ivan Scalfarotto ended a three-week hunger strike last Saturday. He agreed to start eating again because Prime Minister Matteo Renzi promised that he would introduce civil partnerships by the end of the year. Mr Renzi's pledge was prompted by the European Court of Human Rights, which on July 21st censured Italy for failing to offer any legal recognition or protection for same –sex couples. Italy is the only major Western European nation without such measures. At Rome's Gay Center spokesman Fabrizio Marrazzo said that the slow progress on LGBT rights was in part, ironically, due to the fact that there are no anti-gay laws. In other countries homosexuality was criminalized. In Italy it was never illegal. Even under Mussolini. It's always been a case of turning a blind eye. Ivan Scalfarotto (born 16 August 1965) is an activist committed to LGBT rights. He was nominated to the national leadership of the center-left in the primary elections of The Union in 2005 and since 2009 is the vice president of the Democratic Party. He has been elected in the Chamber of Deputies after the 2013 general election. Among the ideas that inspire his campaign are the main attention to personal merit, public administration and politics, the fight against gerontocracy and support of secularism. Dag Hammarskjöld (1905 –1961) was a Swedish diplomat, economist, and author. The second Secretary-General of the United Nations, he served from April 1953 until his death in a plane crash in September 1961. At the age of 47 Hammarskjöld was the youngest to have held the post. He is one of only three people to be awarded a posthumous Nobel Prize. Hammarskjöld is the only UN SecretaryGeneral to die in office; his death occurred en route to a cease-fire negotiations. President John F. Kennedy called Hammarskjöld "the greatest statesman of our century. It is widely known that Hammarskjöld was a closeted homosexual.
talian MP Ivan Scalfarotto went on a three week hunger strike to bring attention to Italy's lack of recognition or protections for same-sex couples.
Nickie J. Antonio (1955) is a politician from Lakewood, Ohio. A Democrat, she serves in the Ohio House of Representatives representing the 13th district, which is located entirely within Cuyahoga County and contains all of the city of Lakewood as well as parts of Cleveland. A former member of Lakewood City Council, she was elected to the legislature in 2010 and took office on January 3, 2011 and reelected in the 2012 General election receiving 75 percent of the vote. In one of her first legislative priorities along with Ted Celeste, Antonio introduced legislation to eliminate the death penalty in the state of Ohio and has pointed to evidence that the penalty has been discriminatory toward minorities. Her partner is Jean Kosmac and the couple have two daughters. She is the first openly gay person to have served in the Ohio General Assembly. Roberta Achtenberg (11950) is an American politician. She currently serves as a Commissioner on the United States Commission on Civil Rights. She served as Assistant Secretary of the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, becoming the first openly lesbian or gay public official in the United States whose appointment to a federal position was confirmed by the United States Senate. Sheldon Andelson (1931-1987) millionaire gay political leader, was also active in the Jewish community, an art patron, chairman of the West Hollywood-based Bank of Los Angeles, founder of Trumps Restaurant and a contributor to Democratic causes. He died of AIDS and at his funeral Sen. Ted Kennedy said that the former University of California regent, “understood the power of ideas, especially the power of justice.” At the time the senator pledged to use his own ''influence and power'' to fund AIDS research and fight prejudice against AIDS victims and homosexuals.

David Garcia-Gonzalez is an expert in the voice business. With more than 15 years of work as a translator and Spanish speaking voice over talent in London, Garcia-Gonzalez knows how to attract a client base and has international brands such as Warner Brothers, Viacom and the BBC on his roster. Garcia-Gonzalez, 35, a gay man, owns GoLocalise.com “Despite the stranglehold the competition has on the localization market, I am a person who never takes no for an answer,” GarciaGonzalez said. “My dream was to run my own company in a business I am passionate about.” And he’s doing just that by adapting content to foreign markets. GoLocalise is a voice over company and translation service with global reach. The company, Garcia-Gonzalez said, offers a full range of localization services under one roof and strives to challenge the larger players. Think the Old Testament version of David taking on the Giant, Goliath. “GoLocalise has punched above its weight and attracted a client base of 400,” said Garcia-Gonzalez. For his business acumen, Garcia-Gonzalez was awarded National Entrepreneur of the Month of May 2015 by the London based
Entrepreneurs’ Circle. GoLocalise has been operating in London since 2008 and during that time, Garcia-Gonzalez’s company has built a network of more than 1,100 translators, subtitlers and voice over talents working in 80 languages. “I believe it is very important to surround myself with inspiring people,” GarciaGonzalez said. And efficiency, he believes, is one important factor in helping GoLocalise expand operations overseas. “Our weaponry includes a commitment to quality, personal service, ingenuity and flexibility,” Garcia-Gonzalez said. “While the giants may be able to keep prices low because of the volumes of work they deal with, they tend to be slow moving, inflexible and complacent.” Garcia-Gonzalez grew up on the shores of the Biscay Bay, in Gijon, a city in the autonomous community of Asturias in Spain. He travels globally to recruit talent and assist clients in achieving their goals. “Now that I have firmly established GoLocalise in London as a leading localization company with a reputation for quality in the international market, I have ambitious plans,” he said.

Growing Up Superheroes And Living Life To Its fullest
Nicole Wiesenthal
D
eihlia Nye impacted one of her friends so much he tattooed her ashes above his heart. In Diane Fraser’s new memoir, “Growing up Superheroes: The Extraordinary Adventures of Deihlia Nye,” she writes about her niece, Nye, and how she impacted the world around her. Nye was born with severe spinal bifida in 1983. Several organs lay outside of her body, her abdomen was open and her parents and relatives were told she would not live more than three days, but she lived to the age of 29. “She lived a kickass life,” Fraser said. “She influenced a lot of people. She was a risk taker. She encouraged others to take risks and get out of their comfort zone.” Fraser said the memoir is Nye’s life story told through a combination of personal narrative and third person vignettes, and that the story is both physical and metaphysical, dealing with themes of death and life after death.
“Death is really a character and a theme of the book,” she said, “as well as a propeller to live fully while you’re here.” Fraser, 52, is an award-winning poet who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and works as a public health consultant. She said Nye’s death inspired her to write the memoir. “She deserved to have a book written about her because I thought her story had a lot of universal themes,” she said. She said that Nye had been like a daughter to her. “I loved her so much immediately,” she said. “My own life was in a pretty rough spot when she was born. I was recovering from growing up with a mental illness. Just meeting her gave me a reason and impetus to really deal with the effects of my family upbringing.” Nye stood out as special to her early on. Though she was teased in school for being in a wheel chair, Fraser said she found a way to deal with it, make friends and be courageous. Both Fraser and Nye identify as queer so Fraser said that knowing Nye gave her the confidence to come out to her family.
“I wanted to do it for her because she mattered to me,” she said. “At first it was very upsetting for my mother, and she still had a lot of homophobia so it was very difficult, but eventually she was fine with it.” When Nye came out as androgynous and queer, Fraser said it didn’t seem like a big deal. Fraser said Nye even developed a persona called “Porkchop” whenever she was out. She said it was about being a queer prankster. “She had this persona that became infamous in her circles and Boston circles that she moved around in,” Fraser said. Nye cofounded Boston Social Nerds, Fraser said, where she met a lot of people in the LGBT community, but because of her identity, she experienced a lot of stigma. “She couldn’t get certain jobs or do certain things,” Fraser said. “She either found paths around or different ways in or created what she wanted.” James Melton, 30, Chicago, Illinois, was close friends with Nye during her life. “I’d known her since freshman year, when I first met her in college at a party,” he said. “She had short funky hair back then and was kind of quiet.” Melton, an avid cyclist, bonded with Nye over her wheelchair, which he recalls had unique wheels. “She was my anchor,” he said. “She was one of those people who didn’t know her own strength at first. She grew into her own.” He said that when he left the school, Nye stayed and became one of the most popular people on campus with many friends who supported her and backed her. She became successful as a strategic marketer for a pottery business the two created. Melton said that at all the jobs Nye took on, she succeeded and worked her way up the ranks. “You’ll meet one or two people that absolutely stand out that you can’t believe they exist,” he said. “It’s just, wow, their

personality and who they are [just take your breath away]. She was one of those people.” He said she gave him wisdom and strength and changed his life. “I have her ashes tattooed above my heart in my chest,” he said. He said he’s glad that Fraser created a book in honor of her. And that the story would speak to the younger LGBT audience and younger people in general. “It’s one of triumph over tragedy,” he said. “I would think that if someone was scared to come out or to actually be themselves and had that internal strife or wanted to put on a façade or face for others, they should read this to know that you can be okay and that a lot of people have had it worse than you can imagine and did amazingly.” Fraser said she hopes people will connect with Deihlia Nye and see themselves in her struggles and that they get some courage from it. “[I hope it would] sort of reinvigorate their own appetite and gusto in life so they can experience the things they want before they die,” she said. She said she hopes it reduces stigma around people with disabilities and being queer. “I think anyone at any age can connect with the story,” she said.

What the Truck!?!?
Rick Karlin
O
nce upon a time, food trucks only showed up at factories and construction sites and provided little more than a few cold sandwiches, doughnuts and coffee. However, in the last decade, gourmet food trucks have become a full-fledged phenomenon serving up everything from cupcakes to ethnic and gourmet creations. No doubt the popularity has as much to do with food as with pricing, most trucks offer dishes priced low enough that you can sample a few and still have change from a twenty.
B
.C. Tacos puts just about anything
you can imagine into a folded tortilla. The caveman-themed offerings include the “Cave Dweller” (Caesar salad with grilled chicken) and “The Missing Link” (fried mahi and slaw).
M
r. Good Stuff specializes in arepas, the Latin American cross between a savory pancake and a tortilla bowl. The truck dishes up four different versions of the treat, all dripping with cheese and laden with ingredients such as pulled pork or grilled chicken for $9. Don’t miss the signature side dish; “4 Cheezy-My-Neezy”, cornmeal fritters stuffed with a four cheese blend.
T
he Lobsta Guy offers some nice variations on the traditional lobster roll; with flavor boosts from garlic, chipotle, wasabisoy, Tabasco and a BLT. Old Bay seasoned fries or potato salad and a couple of soup options round out the meal choices. Sandwiches vary by market price, usually in the mid-teens. TheLobstaGuy. com.

While the biggest collection of trucks gathers monthly in Miami’s Wynwood arts district, you don’t have to drive that far to check out this dining craze. Every Monday evening, beginning at 5, dozens of food trucks line the walkways of the 10-acre ArtsPark at Young Circle in Hollywood. While the selection varies, on a recent night we stopped by and checked out the following trucks. (If a web site is not listed, most have a Facebook page.)

If you want to laugh, then “Hey Qween!” is going to be your new favorite show. Enough of Good Morning, America and other boring talk shows. You want something out of the ordinary, and that’s what “Hey Qween!” is for. Hosted by comedian Jonny McGovern, it’s a gay talk show filled with drag queens, hot topics and most of all, laughs. McGovern is aided by his sidekick, drag queen Lady Red Couture. The duo interviews LGBT guests who come on the show, such as Branum, Candis Cayne, Mitch Vaughn, Jake Shears, Michelle Visage and more. Who knows – maybe Caitlyn Jenner will be on the show.
McGovern also has quite the impressive rap sheet. He has been featured on LOGO’s “Big Gay Sketch Show” for three seasons and has done music videos as the character “The Gay Pimp.” He has also starred on Comedy Central’s “Out On The Edge” with Alan Cumming and multiple VH1 and MTV specials such as “Totally Gayer” and “My Coolest Years.” As if that wasn’t enough, he made an appearance on Tru TV’s “Smoking Gun” series and was a correspondent for the final season of the “Ricki Lake Show.” Gayest Of All Time, his long running podcast, will celebrate its 10th anniversary next fall.
Check out the channel at YouTube.com/HeyQweenTV to watch Hey Qween and see more of McGovern.

S THE LGBT COMMUNITY
basks in the recent victory for marriage equality, we should not forget the pioneers of the movement says Tracy Baim, author of a new biography of Barbara Gittings, 1932-2007. “Barbara Gittings: Gay Pioneer” is the first full-length biography of the woman called the mother of the gay rights movement. “There were only a couple hundred activists in that pre-Stonewall era, actually working for a change,” explained Baim, longtime editor of the “Windy City Times” in Chicago, a screenwriter and producer and author of several other books. Gittings realized she was different while a student at Northwestern University. She dropped out and sought out others who identified and lived openly as homosexuals. In 1956, she traveled to San Francisco and became a member of the Daughters of Bilitis. Two years later, she founded the New York chapter. While most gays and lesbians still lived in the closet, Gittings took a more public role, marching in the 1965 protest outside the White House with another founder of the gay rights movement, Frank Kameny, arguing that homosexuality was not a disqualification for government employment. On July 4, 1965, she and Kameny began annual pickets at Independence Hall that would continue until the Stonewall riots. “Her real motivation was that other people shouldn’t feel isolated and alone. She had a grand vision of a movement,” Baim discovered in her research. “She wasn’t the first, but she and Frank were the longest full time activists working for gay rights.” In the early ‘70s as a member of the American Library Association, she pushed for greater visibility for gays and lesbians
within the profession and access to literature about homosexuality. She and Kameny also lobbied the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disorders. In the years after Stonewall, Gittings and other leaders had to contend with in-fighting within the community and competing political agendas. Through it all, Gittings remained focused on her goal to win greater acceptance and equality for her gay and lesbian brothers and sisters. Her efforts laid the groundwork for many of the LGBT organizations that exist today, including the Human Rights Campaign and National Lesbian and Gay Task Force. Baim began the project last October with the blessing of Gittings’ longtime partner, Kay Lahusen, and a self-imposed deadline to publish by the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Philadelphia march. Baim completed the book in February, months ahead of schedule. “It’s so important to realize how important history is. Our gains are so closely tied to the activists of the ‘50s and ‘60s, but we must understand how tenuous it is. Society can change on a dime. The groundwork they laid is solid, but it can also shift. We know this from other countries in the world. We need to honor people like Barbara and learn from her,” Baim said.
Tracy Baim, author of “Barbara Gittings: Gay Pioneer,” will discuss her book on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Stonewall National Museum – Wilton Manors Gallery, 2157 Wilton Drive, as part of the museum’s Stonewall Author Series. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, go to Stonewall-Museum.org.

Get Naked!
GNI celebrates 30th anniversary with annual gathering
The pool is a great place to cool off while having some naked fun.
This year marks the 30th Anniversary of The Gathering (officially known as The Annual International Gathering of Male Naturists). Gay Naturists International’s (GNI) signature event is the largest nude rendezvous in the world. It attracts over 500 men annually to a spacious, 350-acre summer camp in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. The Gathering is open to all gay, bisexual, and gay-friendly men who are at least 21 years old. The Gathering is more of a reunion than a vacation, with many familiar faces returning every year. The property includes a 13-acre lake, two heated swimming pools, an auditorium, a phenomenal nightly Dance Club, and countless recreational opportunities. All meals, beverages, workshops, entertainment are included in one flat price. Beer and wine are included at select events. Numerous daytime workshops include men’s health issues, legal issues affecting naturists by Naturist Action Committee (NAC), relationships, and a number of interesting discussion topics or lectures. Nature hikes and other workshops round out the educational activities. Enjoy bridge and other games, low-impact aerobics, volleyball, a fully equipped nude gym and weight room, canoe and “drag” races, oil wrestling, body painting, the GNI Regatta … or just relax at the pool and read a book. The daily Social Hour is one of the many opportunities to mix and mingle with everyone. Savor wine, beer, soft drinks, select mixed drinks, and snacks in a beautiful lakeside setting. Every Social Hour
has a theme, and costumes are encouraged! So plan ahead and undress to impress! Of course, naked is also a totally acceptable costume at all of the events! Nightly entertainment ranges from contests (think Miss GNI Lace and Mr. GNI Leather) to variety shows put on by the attendees to professional entertainers from around the globe. This year there will be singers, comedians, and even a porn star producer — can you guess who “she” might be? Sound like fun? It is! So visit GayNaturists. org and register today. Rustic cabins house 8-18 men each. Each has its own restroom and shower facilities with lots of hot water.

LaRue Needs You
Hunter Houston
Chi Chi LaRue, famed director of porn, has fallen on hard times and needs your help. LaRue, internationally known gay icon, launched a GoFundMe.com account to aid in his alcohol and drug rehabilitation. As of last week the fund of 136 people had raised $10,870 in 10 days. Family and friends of LaRue, who control the fund, are asking for $40,000 to cover the famed diva’s Minnesota rehab experience. On the GoFundMe.com account, it is reported that LaRue is “embracing” the rehab. LaRue (aka Lawrence David) is known for his directorial skills in numerous films. Our favorite is “Shifting Gears: A Bisexual Transmission (2008)” starring Wolf Hudson, Blake Riley, Cameron Marshall, Johnny Hazzard and Shy Love. Shot inside an auto body shop, the film caused quite a stir in the adult entertainment industry for its promotion of the phrase “straight-for-pay” – a reference to the gay actors performing straight sex scenes. LaRue defended the production as a work of art. LaRue’s GoFundMe account was created by Kevin Molin on July 23. “After years of struggling with addiction
Chi Chi recently found himself in crisis. With help of concerned family and friends, Chi Chi realized that his life was in danger and willingly admitted himself into drug and alcohol rehab in Minnesota,” Molin writes. Meanwhile, Porn Pulse has learned that power bottom and new Wilton Manors resident Sean Storm is planning to shoot his annual romp with Johnny Thicke in Rehobeth Beach this week. On his Facebook page, Storm said he was told to bring his chaps and prepare for sling time with Thicke and his partner. When questioned, Storm via text messages, said he is not signing with any studio and prefers to make an “old fashioned” amateur film to post on Xtube.
