Message from the Head of School

Dear SFS Community and Friends, The 2011-2012 Academic Year was our Centennial Year, marking the founding of our School in 1912. The year was celebrated by three separate weeks of Centennial events, attended by Alumni and friends from across the Globe. Our finale, an all-school Gala, was attended by over 600 Alumni, parents, faculty and staff members from as far back as the class of 1936. It was truly a memorable event! As you’ll see in the pages that follow, our Seoul Foreign School has been blessed with a strong fiscal foundation, a financially supportive group of Alumni and friends and gifted students who performed well in the arenas of academics, athletics, fine arts and in Christian ministries. I hope the information in this Annual Report will be helpful in gaining a more complete understanding of the dynamics and profile of this very special school. Please contact me at jengstrom@seoulforeign.org if you have any questions or comments. I am eager to respond to any questions or suggestions you might have. We appreciate your partnership through your prayers and giving. We are committed to being good stewards of your gifts as we facilitate the education of our future global leaders.

Faithfully Yours,

John Engstrom Head of School

On ERB standardized tests, SFS Elementary School and Middle School students routinely score higher than suburban U.S. students, and compare favorably with independent school norms in most areas.

The ERB Independent School Norms are the most rigorous norms for international schools. This year, our fourth graders scored equal to or higher than ERB Independent schools in six assessment strands.

In addition to ERB, our Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) results show that 87% of our students are reading at or above grade level expectations. The number of students exceeding grade level expectations has risen from 293 to 328 students.

SFS fifth graders scored higher than ERB Independent (private) schools in five assessment strands.

The CTP-4 is a standardized test (referred to as the ERB, the testing company that publishes the test) . Its purpose is to test what a student knows at a given point in time.

The CTP-4 comprises a battery of tests in reading, language usage, and mathematics and includes a series of multiple-choice and open-ended questions that measure mastery of skills and knowledge.

Educational Record Bureau Scores (ERB) SFS students consistently perform well above the average of suburban schools in the U.S. and are often on par with or out-perform independent schools.

Overview of IB Enrollment and Scores SFS continues to see significant growth in all areas of the IB program. As the graph below illustrates, the number of students completing the full IB diploma program continues to increase, leading to a natural corresponding decrease in the number of students opting to undertake “IB course certificates. Globally, the IB is recognized by over 2545 Universities and colleges in over 75 countries. SFS believes that the IB program is an excellent preparation for success in post graduate studies and life beyond.

Standardized Assessment Tasks (SATs) and SOSCA In the British School, a number of assessments are used to benchmark the students’ progress and reported on the Students’ Progress Reports during the year. There are no ‘passes’ or ‘fails’ in these assessments—they provide a ‘snapshot’ of each of our students at that point in their education. During Key Stages

Curriculum subjects is assessed against seven levels.
